tretching 500 miles across the northern side of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Trench is the deepest in the Atlantic Ocean. This 6-mile-deep feature is part of what makes the Virgin Islands one of the world’s best sportfishing destinations. Here, where the Atlantic Ocean borders the clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Virgin Islands rise as the peaks of an enormous underwater mountain chain. The islands offer some of the best diving, snorkeling and most beautiful beaches anywhere, but it is off these islands that serious anglers come to play. Beneath the surface, the topography is spectacular. About 20 miles north of St. Thomas, the travel hub of the U.S. Virgin Islands, the North Drop falls precipitously to depths of more than 28,000 feet into the Puerto Rico Trench. Cool Atlantic currents are stirred off Virgin Gorda, and sea life abounds. The big pelagic species congregate to feed on an abundance of baitfish drawn by the drop. A similar situation occurs off the South Drop, just 8 miles south of St. Thomas, and the smaller drops around St. Croix. Short boat rides put anglers on abundant baitfish and the bigger fish that feed on them. Marlin can be caught year-round, but spring to fall is peak time for blue marlin, which show up in numbers and feed aggressively around the full moons. The bite is legendary. The IGFA Women’s alltackle world record, a 1,073-pound blue marlin, was caught off the Virgin Islands, along with 24 other world records over the years. The granders—1,000-pound-plus marlin—show up on occasion, but the Virgin Islands also offer numbers. During the USVI Open/Atlantic Blue Marlin Tournament, 207 blue marlin were released over four days of fishing. Marlin average about 350 pounds out of St. Thomas, and 500-pounders are caught regularly. But blues aren’t the only game in town. The location of these islands 6

almost seems strategic. Sailfish, white marlin, tuna, wahoo, dolphin… the most sought after gamefish for sport and the table frequent these drops in good numbers to feed. Working the drop by trolling rigs across the depth contours produces consistently good action year-round. The sailfish bite peaks October through March. Yellowfin tuna are present late summer through winter, and blackfin and skipjack tuna provide
action year-round. Wahoo are also a year-round target, and dolphin fishing peaks in fall. The fishing is world class, and the Virgin Islands are also easy to get to. A short plane ride from the continental U.S. puts anglers in the middle of the action. And with lodging that ranges from quaint to luxurious, there are options for anyone who wants to live out their offshore fantasy. To learn more about the Puerto Rico Trench, go to

he numbers don’t lie. Guatemala’s Pacific coast is the most productive sailfish destination in the world. Days of double-digit releases would be considered spectacular anywhere. Off Guatemala, it’s just an average day. Annual release rates show a dozen sailfish per boat, per day. And that’s just a year-round average. It is not unusual during peak seasons for boats to raise more than 50 or 60 sails a day, sometimes a lot more. In March of 2006, Capt. Ron Hamlin, and the anglers on the Captain Hook, released 124 sailfish in a single day less than 15 miles off Guatemala. The legendary former skipper out of Casa Vieja Lodge in Puerto San Jose still holds the record. For conventional anglers, it’s pretty much a sure thing. For fly anglers, it’s the best odds you’ll find. The concentrations of sailfish in this small slice of the Pacific are astounding. But it’s not just sails. Natural factors such as dramatically shifting currents, temperature barriers and high oxygen levels close to the surface combine to hold baitfish year-round. The eddy formations that swirl off the Guatemalan coast are crowded with life, including the big pelagics and the fish they feed on. There are more Pacific sailfish than can be found anywhere, but there are also marlin, wahoo, slammer Dorado and yellowfin tuna. Casa Vieja Lodge says blue marlin in the 200- to 400-pound range are thickest April through July, with black marlin up to 400 pounds showing up December through March and smaller striped marlin November through January. On average, every Casa Vieja boat encounters marlin every three days while targeting sailfish. During peak billfish seasons of December through March and then again from May through July, grand slams are an everyday possibility. Boats fish anywhere from 2 to 50 miles out in an area renowned for flat seas. The most consistently productive area is a canyon known as “The Pocket.” Only about 40 nautical miles wide, The Pocket drops to depths of 3,500 to 4,000 feet. Those constantly shifting currents deflect off the walls of the pocket stirring up nutrient rich waters that attract bait and big gamefish. Casa Vieja takes the fishing very seriously. Guided by some of the world’s top-tagging and award winning captains, their fleet of classically maintained 35’ Contenders and 40’ Sportfishers consistently produces world-class results. They are inheritors of history. A majority of the

captains and lodge staff were employees of the original Fins ’n Feathers Inn that launched the Guatemalan sportfishing industry. These are the same sportsmen who have cared for the fishery since it exploded onto the sportfishing scene in the 1990s. With total release using circle hooks, the conservation philosophy has been central to Casa Vieja’s operations for more than a decade. With this kind of stewardship, as well as emphasis from the Guatemalan Government on limiting commercial fishing, the fishery continues to thrive. The lodge was also designed by lifelong sportsmen who know it is best to recover from a non-stop day of action on the water in worldclass accommodations. Luxurious rooms and top-notch local cuisine are paired with a staff trained to fill the needs of discerning travelers. It’s the perfect place to relive the day’s catch or dream of the morning’s possibilities. For more information on fishing Guatemala and the Casa Vieja Lodge, go to www.casaviejalodge.com.

our Rip Roller is tearing up the water as you retrieve it in short quick jerks. Suddenly the water explodes from the vicious strike of a peacock bass. In your excitement and shock, you instinctively jerk your rod up before the peacock has had a chance to get the hook firmly in his mouth, and 6 inches of lure and three massive treble hooks come flying past your head. Your first encounter with the huge peacock bass of Brazil’s Amazon will be one you never forget. Fishing for this massive, hard-fighting predator can be best described to anglers as hooking into a 20-pound smallmouth bass that is having a bad day. To top off this fishing adventure, you are fishing over 1,000 miles from the ocean in the heart of the world’s largest rain forest on black water rivers that are home to more than 2,500 species of fish and the world’s greatest diversity of flora and fauna. Anglers will catch four or five different species of peacock bass, ranging from the popoca and butterfly species weighing an average of 3 to 5 pounds to the massive paca or arzu, the current world record of which is a 29-pounder caught by Andrea Zaccherini in 2010. Anglers can also catch aerobatic arowana, several species of catfish weighing upwards of 200 pounds, wolf fish and myriad other species. Peacocks will readily hit topwater baits on waters that aren’t heavily pressured, the most famous being the big propeller driven Woodchopper and its clones, as well as the more subtle Spook type baits. As with most species of fish, subsurface jerkbaits and jigs will produce bigger numbers of fish caught than topwater lures. Fly fishermen have discovered this game

hey call Islamorada the Sportfishing Capital of the World. This slim string of six small islands about halfway down the Florida Keys separates the Atlantic from the Gulf of Mexico, and just offshore in the Atlantic, warm blue currents of the Gulf Stream deliver a steady flow of baitfish and the big migrating pelagic species that feed on them. The Continental Shelf is a highway for swordfish that move through in depths of 1,400 to 1,900 feet with a consistency that may be unmatched anywhere in the world. It is possible to target these deepwater giants any month of the year off Islamorada, and even during the day. But it is sportfishing only for hardcore anglers. Swordfish are elusive anywhere, the most difficult of the billfish to catch, and fights lasting several hours are the reward for tempting a bite from 150- to 400-pound or larger fish deep in the abyss. If catching a swordfish is one of the boxes that remains to be checked off on your bucket list, you’d be hard pressed to find a better place to do it. A little closer in, where the Gulf Stream swings over broken bottom and the offshore humps Islamorada has become famous for, it creates rips where disoriented baitfish become easy prey for dolphin, wahoo, sailfish, kingfish and tuna. In the summer months, flocks of birds are a dead giveaway for dolphinfish pushing frenzied bait to the surface. When that’s not going on, fish can be found trolling feather or jet head lures and plugs. A bite while trolling means it’s time to slow down and cast baits to catch other fish drawn to the same area. Sometimes this is met with spectacular results, especially for mahi, which tend to gather in numbers. Some of the most spectacular action on the humps comes from blackfin tuna. It can show up in spurts any time of year, but fall typically brings a push of 10-pound-plus tuna that can be incited into surface-feeding frenzies. Chumming up blackfins with pilchards is a very visual experience that allows even anglers armed with fly rods to hook up with multiple hard-fighting fish.

As the tuna move toward the reefs with the late fall and winter baitfish migrations, the bigger fish begin to show up, and kite fishing becomes one of the preferred methods for teasing up fish 20 pounds and larger. The other fish that shows up to take advantage of baitfish from November through the winter is sailfish. There’s a reason why Islamorada is home to so many sailfish tournaments during the winter months. It can seem like everyone drops everything they’re doing for a chance to fly release flags. In fall and winter, sails move in to gorge on abundant ballyhoo around the reefs. This can present opportunities to anglers less than 5 miles from the docks off the islands of Islamorada. The 130- to 200-foot depths produce the most consistent bite where strong currents and changes in water color to a deep royal blue give away the edges and rips where sailfish hunt. Trolling or kite fishing the reefs can produce numerous fish in the 60-pound range when the bite is on. But on sunny days when the weather cooperates, it is possible to sight fish for sailfish inside the reefs in water as shallow as 20 or 30 feet. Even smaller boats can get in on this action. From the tower, crewmembers seek out the fish. When the alarm goes out, chum and baits are deployed. There’s really no technique more exciting. Anglers in the know await those bluebird skies on winter days when seeking out sailfish becomes as much hunting as it is fishing. And if all the offshore action isn’t enough to convince any angler to start making plans right now, fall also brings some of the biggest bonefish of the year to the Islamorada flats. Time it right, and you can be fishing the flats in the morning and trolling the bluewater in the afternoon. What more could you ask for?

THE ONLY DURABLE HIGH QUALITY ROD WRAP
Russ Lane: Bassmaster Elite Series™ Pro
“Winn overwraps help me as a tournament angler in so many ways. They’re great in all weather conditions. I don’t have to physically squeeze my rod during a cast as hard as I did with cork or EVA. That gives me a better degree of accuracy with less fatigue. Multiple color options also allow me to organize different rod actions and lengths using different colors. I honestly could never use a rod again without my Winn overwrap!”

I
believe this is the Golden Age of fishing tackle. For my money, the amazing quality and range of rods available to us today is clear evidence of that claim. Improvements in graphite quality, skeletal reel seats and lightweight braid-resistant guides have paved a path to conspicuous performance benefits, and rods conscientiously tailored to nearly every angling task are helping anglers execute specific techniques with a flourish. Yet, until recently, the seat of angler control—the handle—seemed stuck in the Dark Ages. Cork, a survivor from a bygone era, seemed like it would dominate rod handles forever, with EVA foam the only alternative material allowed any territorial claim. But progress has come, finally, to the rod handle. In recent years, alternative rod grip materials have hit the market including carbon fiber, a slick lightweight option; tough Kevlar tubing; composite cork, a denser and more durable cork-based material blend; and Syncork, a light and durable material with a rough-hewn appearance. Some have used shrinkwrap to give EVA foam a different look and feel, too. Color and design options have emerged, with even a “camo cork” available
now to rod builders. One of the biggest breakthroughs may have come two years ago when Winn Grips (www.winngrips.com), the Huntington Beach, California-based maker of grips for sports equipment, introduced its interchangeable grip system and rolled out a full line of handsomely designed rod grips made from its patented WinnDry material, which maintains its tacky feel in wet conditions and weather extremes. Early Winn prototypes were colorful and interesting, and they provided a hint of the performance benefits of ergonomic comfort and angler control that has come to characterize the grips today. Yet some thought early designs too similar to the golf grips that have made Winn a global leader in that field. Winn’s founder, aerospace engineering pioneer Dr. Ben Huang, took angler feedback to heart. Winn’s grip system has evolved into a versatile line of rod handle components. Rod makers, from leading brands to custom builders, have caught on quickly to the advantages of the grips. At ICAST 2016 in Orlando, Lew’s Fishing Tackle captured three Best of Show awards for products featuring Winn’s advanced polymer materials in rod handles and reel knobs. Lew’s, Kistler, Denali and others displayed new rod lines with Winn grips. Winn has introduced an element of “fashion” to fishing rods, too, by offering a broad range of bold colors and multi-colored and sometimes multi-textured designs that can complement tournament jerseys, boat colors and wraps, or represent a signature look or the colors of a favorite sports team. Winn’s quieter contribution to today’s tackle evolution could come in the emerging practice of “retrofitting” favorite old rods with Winn rod grips and in routinely fitting cork and EVA rod handles with a Winn “skin” in the form of Winn Superior Rod Wrap, a tape-like overwrap.

Center s SPEARFISHING TRAVEL
SHERI DAYE
A
s spearfishing continues to grow and capture people’s interest, so has the amount of travel related to spearfishing. The allure of exotic locations, different species, and the possibility of world records has spawned a new breed of traveler, and resorts and charters are happy to cater to this crowd. In Florida, there are live-aboard charters that take scuba divers to fertile grounds out of the lower Keys into the Gulf or the Dry Tortugas – such as Seaclusive Charters. There are also charters that cater to smaller groups of freediving spearfishers such as Killshot, Into the Blue, and more. The Keys are especially attractive to vacationers, as the scenery above the water can be just as interesting as below. In the Bahamas, resorts with marinas are well-equipped to handle divers, some of them weekend warriors coming by boat from Florida. The clear waters and beautiful marine life are a big draw. Bahamian law requires freediving-only and the use of either slings or polespears for spearfishing. Rather than being a deterrent, it’s created a new breed of divers who enjoy this simple and primitive form of hunting. The ability to add cracked conch or a lobster tail to a meal is a big bonus. Both coasts of the United States have a number of spearfishing charters to choose from as well. Divers can enjoy a change of scenery and try their luck at hunting white sea bass in the kelps of California, cobias off the rigs of Louisiana, stripers in the waters off Rhode Island, African Pompanos off the wrecks of Hatteras – all exciting catches. International travel has increased significantly in the past few years. Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica are a big draw with desirable species such as Cubera Snappers, cobias, and tunas – depending on which coast. Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga, and Ascension Island have been yielding world record wahoos and tunas, drawing the more hard-core divers. Here’s some quick tips to make sure your travel is fun, safe, and productive: 1. Go with friends and watch out for each other - in the water and out.
2. Choose a reputable charter that specializes in spearing and ask the captain about fish and conditions. Make sure your skill level is up to par for that location. 3. Make sure you are properly equipped for the fish you are targeting and follow the law. Be aware of the local fishing regulations and limits. 4. Use a Sportube to pack your spearguns and use the wetsuits for padding. Tell TSA you have “fishing equipment” rather than using the word “speargun”. 5. Buy DAN insurance – they are a reputable agency known for covering divers, including evacuation services. For divers in search of adventure, traveling to different hunting grounds can yield the trip (and fish) of a lifetime. Life is short, so get out and enjoy it! DOUBLE BARREL POPPER
For anglers who enjoy pursuing bass on the fly and for the anglers that have interest in fly fishing for bass, now is the time to get on the water. Cooler nights and slightly shorter days bring a nice drop in water temps that often triggers bass into aggressive feeding patterns to beef up for winter. The result is some exciting topwater activity. Armed with poppers, I love to row anglers down local rivers armed with 6 weights and poppers targeting bankside structure for spotted bass. Takes are often aggressive followed with a nice acrobatic battle to the boat. I have been filling my popper box with the new Double Barrel Popper heads from Flymen Fishing Company. They generate loud glugs and can also be used in a number of creative ways to create your own desired style of topwater fishing. Hook: Thread: Eyes: Tail: Body:

re you a bass guy? Ever caught a 51-pounder or, for that matter, any over 10 pounds? Very few folks have. I’ve been promoting a new horizon for the bass angler: inshore saltwater. Permit me to highlight the magnificent redfish, and point you to three places where you can get it done. First let’s talk about the fish and what to expect. The guy is dumb as a rock. He can be spooked and still will bite, is always hungry, is a survivor, grows rapidly, eats plastics, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, can be spotted in the shallows and finally, is a fabulous table fish. My largest is 51-pounds. I was fishing in the Banana River near Cocoa Beach, Fla. and saw this giant in about 2 feet of water. I cast a small curly tail jig on 12-pound test line and he took it. After the hook set, the fish swam past the boat and my

ach year before the bass tournament season starts, I practice new techniques and tune-up the ones I’ve mastered. Whether it is electronics, skipping jigs, fishing ledges, etc., you have to practice to get better. One night before going to the lake for some practice, I decided to work on time management. Time is something that always costs me in tournaments. I’ve realized that time was not my enemy, how I managed it was. Tournament anglers have eight hours to catch five good fish by 3 p.m. I started with the basics. I broke it down by allocating one hour for travel from spot to spot and to get back for the weigh in. That left seven hours of fishing. During map study, I found seven spots I could fish for an hour each. Believe it or not, that’s a lot of time to fish one area. I decided that if I got bit at any time, I might need to adjust my time-management plan on the water, but at least I had a plan. A mistake I see many anglers make is staying too long in one area. Bass are opportunistic, and if they are ready to eat, they are going to eat. If I have not gotten bit in a certain amount of time, I will do one of several things: change baits, change colors, change locations and, many times, change speed. Focusing on time management, I have found that discipline and staying focused is a key part of the game.
My plan started out just as planned. I fished the first spot for an hour, and then ran to the next and fished it for an hour. When I got to my third spot, I started getting bites. So when the time came to leave, I simply stayed at that spot for 15 minutes longer, which meant I only had 45 minutes at one of my other areas. I was looking for a pattern. If it was determined the fish were only halfway back in the coves, I could concentrate only on those areas where I was getting bites and save time. I could now expand my fishing areas and places to fish, staying on each spot for maybe 30 minutes. Now, instead of having only seven spots to fish, I could get to 11 or 12 spots in a day and still be back on time. Time is something we cannot make more of, but it is something that can be managed. I recommend tournament anglers who struggle with time management buy a baker’s timer, set it for however long you want to be on each spot, and stick to moving each time it goes off. For me, timing my areas allows me to be more efficient all the way down to how I cover a certain area and to the rotation of baits I’m using. Stop blaming time and start managing it better. The Upcoming Sportsperson’s Holiday Gift Giving Season: Is Customer Service Important? With the coming of November, the holiday gift season is upon us. Many readers are thinking about a gift for friends, relatives, family members, or acquaintances who enjoy outdoor activities. Most likely, you will be turning to catalogs, on-line shopping websites, and local as well as big box sporting goods outlets for your shopping items. In my estimation, customer service continues to be an important part of the shopping experience. I like to think that spending my hard earned money is appreciated by a business. Customer service is also essential in assisting you in making purchases or working through glitches that may take place in the purchasing process. I was reminded of the importance of customer service when attempting to make an online purchase through one of the third tier big box sporting goods stores. I had initially shopped at this particular sporting goods outlet while visiting Anchorage, Alaska several years ago. I was pleased to find that this company had a few stores in selected cities across the southeast United States. The company also had the capacity for making online purchases. I desired to purchase a waterproof flybox and over the course of shopping, added other tackle items to my order. I experienced difficulty in the online checkout process, receiving some type of error message during checkout. I telephoned customer service leaving a message for contact
2 SOUTHWEST GA EAST AL
to assist me on this order. I subsequently contacted this customer service number on several occasions, leaving several voice messages, but never received a call back. It appears that a live person never answers the customer service line nor responds to messages that are left on the voicemail. Out of frustration, I completed a survey regarding my shopping experience that was available on the business website that was fairly negative. You guessed it; no response to the survey. I have given up on making purchases at this sporting goods business. I also discussed my negative experience with several angling friends that may have impacted their purchasing views with this business. I ended up purchasing my flybox from the manufacturer’s website. Even though I paid two or three dollars more for the flybox, a smooth and hassle free purchase was worth the extra dollars. I would suspect that readers have had similar negative shopping experiences that have influenced decisions in shopping with a particular business. I can say that the first and most second tier sporting goods outlets have their act together. Online and catalog purchases, if available, are usually hassle free with effective customer service personnel available to assist with any problems that may occur. I have also done business with several of the businesses that advertise within this magazine. These smaller business

establishments have friendly customer service that make you feel appreciated as a customer. Is customer service important for those upcoming holiday gifts? I think so; with positive and hassle free shopping during the holiday season, you are likely to return as a customer to make purchases during other times of the year. The business gains a valuable and reliable customer; you the customer find a pleasant outlet for expanding your sporting goods supplies.

Late Fall Scum Fishing
The welcome of cool mornings after long days of 90-plus-degree summer weather means one thing to me; SCUM, JUNK or SLOP FISHING. Whatever you want to call it, it is by far the most exciting fishing you’ll ever do! Scum, as it is referred to by most anglers, is when vegetation forms a large blanket-like form over the water. There are several forms of vegetation that can create these areas. Lily pads that were once covered water now have other forms of vegetation filling in the open water pockets that once existed such as milfoil or hydrilla. Duck wart or primrose is another example of vegetation that can make up some prime areas. These areas look like a burnt pizza on top of the water and duck wart can either be very thin or thick, based on how much vegetation is bunched up below. Another form can be grass lines that have been folded over and are now lying across the top of the water, and don’t overlook smaller areas where the wind blows any form of debris into a secluded pocket or corner. Determining what kind of slop the bass are in is important because on many bodies of water, such as Lake Guntersville, Seminole or Eufaula, you could spend days upon days fishing fields of green gold and not be very successful. One important factor to listen for is the sound of shad or bluegill feeding. This will sound like a bowl of Rice Krispies with milk. Two other factors that I take into consideration when locating bass within the scum are if there are any other forms of cover located within or near the area. The other factor being if there is any current running through or nearby. Many times bass will position themselves in the junk that is within close range of the current. My preferred lures are frogs, Missile Baits D-Bombs and Tightline Flipping or Swim Jigs from Tight Line Jigs. I like to throw a Tightline Jig on top of the matted vegetation when it is not that thick and when the bass are holding more on the edge.
When you bring your jig off the edge, it can fall down the face of the vegetation. Depending on the water clarity and the bait the bass are feeding on will dictate what color jig and trailer to use. My favorite jigs are Guntersville Special and Green Tequila. If you want to get your arm broken, pick up a D-Bomb from Missile Baits and flip it or punch it through the matt of scum using a 1 ounce to 1 ½ ounce flipping weight! It may take several tries, but you had better hold on to the rod tight! I’ve actually had clients get the rod ripped out of their hands. My primarily lure and favorite way to entice these big hogs out is with a soft, hollow-bodied frog from Pro-Z Baits. With these high quality frogs you are also getting a high performance hook that helps you hook the bass and keep them on until they get in the boat. As for colors, I like to keep it simple by using black/red, black/ blue or black/yellow. Black/white or leopard shad will work well too. Before you make that first cast, check your drag. It should be tightened down almost all the way. Second, trim the legs of the frog to about one inch and place a rattle inside the frog. While there are several types of retrieves, I use two primary retrieves to locate and catch fish under heavy cover. To locate and cover vast amounts of grass, I use a steady pull and stop retrieve. Keep in mind I normally have clients with me and my primary mission is not to hook up a fish but rather get the fish to show themselves. The preferred way in which most of the fish are caught is to work the frog with short pops or jerks of the rod tip for about 12 to 18 inches, stop for a second and repeat. If you get your frog next to or in a blow hole, stop and simply twitch the lure. Using this retrieve you are imitating a shad or frog hung up on the surface of the grass. As for the hook set, I always explain to my clients to say the following phrase to themselves “one, two, set the hook” or as soon as you feel the fish. The whole time keep looking for the frog. If the frog is still on the water leave
it for a second and simply twitch the frog. The beast should return for a snack. Again, it is important to keep your rod tip low to the water. By doing this your line recovery with the swing of the rod upward increases threefold, thus, turning the fish and bringing him to the surface of the grass. If you miss the hook set, throw back in the same location and hang on. Normally the fish will return. Regardless of what lure you are going to be throwing when you are scum fishing, it is important to use the proper equipment. I use and supply my clients with 7’ to 7’6” heavy to extra heavy Duckett Ghost Rods or White Ice Rods; weight of the rods depends on the cover. I use LEW’s Speed Spool Reels 7.1-1 or 6.4-1 at a minimum and lined with 50-65 pound test Vicious Braid. Don’t know how to use a bait casting reel? Not an issue. The latest shad hatch has been fantastic. The threadfin fry are growing fast and the fish are feeding steadily. They are full and healthy. That is making the bite a little tougher. Jerk baits and lipless cranks are working through the schools during feeding frenzies. Shaky heads with short trick worms are getting a good bite near the pad cover and shore cover. Crappie are doing well on the trash piles with jigs and minnows. Shellcrackers are coming in good numbers on red worms. Catfish are a good bet, and jug fishing is producing some great catches. Visit www.alabamachildrensclaassic.org and see the new opportunities to support the kids and their families while being treated at the hospital in Birmingham. You will also find a code to register for the new free sports app and the proceeds go to the foundation as well. Enjoy the great cooler weather on the water. God Bless & Good Fishn’
Bass: Good - The shallow bite remains good now and will improve even more, especially if we get some rain and continued cooler temps. Baits such as unweighted Flukes, Senkos, buzzbaits and Rebel Pop-R’s are catching bass. Try to fish these baits in or near cover or around schools of shallow baitfish. Fish the open water in the pockets with a KVD 1.5 crankbait or an A-Rig. Also, it doesn’t hurt to have a jig handy to pitch around any shallow wood cover. It won’t produce a lot of bites, and you are going to lose some jigs, but it’s a good way to catch a bigger fish. By the end of the month (especially if it cools off quickly) the big schools of spots mixed with hybrids, white bass and stripers can be caught on jigging spoons and dropshot rigs on deeper offshore structures. Linesides: Good - The downline bite with shad or bass shiners has improved as the water has cooled off. Freelining a live bait will also work at times. Most of the fish seem to be holding 20 to 30 feet deep when they are not schooling on the surface and are still moving around a good bit. Expect the topwater fishing to continue to improve very early and very late or on overcast or rainy days as the water cools. Gulls and loons usually show up in November, which makes it easier to pinpoint schooling stripers. A popping cork rig has been working well on schooling 1 to 3 pound fish. A 3/8 or ½ ounce white Rooster Tail, a chrome C.C. Spoon and a number of other small shad imitators have also been producing. As the water cools, a bucktail jig becomes very effective as well. The mouths of most creeks south of the 109 bridge and the flats near the dam have been holding fish. Trolling with mid-depth crankbaits and Alabama Rigs has also been producing some linesides in these same areas. Crappie: Good - Try fishing the smallest minnows you can find or a 1/16 ounce or smaller jig around bridge pilings, brushpiles and blowdowns in 6 to 15 feet of water. Concentrate on trees and brush that are close to the old creek channels. Pitching or shooting docks with small tube or feather jigs around or under the docks is also a very good technique during fall. Cooler temps and some rain should improve the fishing even more. Yellow Jacket, Wolf and Whitewater Creeks are still producing some crappie.

Local Lakes & Forecasts Lake Martin
Forecast by Capt. David Hare Alex City Guide Service 256.401.3089 davidbhare@yahoo.com Water temperature: 74-76 degrees, lake level 485.4, clarity: very clear. October for the most part was great fishing. Had to work for them, but it paid off with some nice catches. Now here it is November and the live bait bite is on! If like past Novembers, you will find us in shallower waters than the last couple months. The later in the month it gets, the bigger the bait we will use and target huge trophy stripers! Unless it has finally started raining when you read this, then I suspect the water level is down to around 482-481, nothing a whole lot different than past years. By saying this, I’m basically telling you that your normal November fishing areas should look very familiar and your past tactics for fishing should be close to last November. For those of you that have never experienced Lake Martin striper fishing in November or December, you need to come do this with us. It’s crazy fishing and a lot of topwater action! If you’re scratching your head on what to get your family, your friends, your employees or better yet, yourself, for Christmas, get a gift certificate from Alex City Guide Service. The certificates are good for a year, and the memories last a lifetime. Call Capt. David Hare at 256-401-3089 and book your “Trip of a Life Time”. Lake Sinclair is down 1.3 feet, with the water temperature in the low 80’s and the water clear. Bass fishing is good. Topwater lures and buzzbaits are working every morning. A good approach is to use both a small and large buzzbait and perhaps a standard Pop R and a large Chug Bug. Try a Mann’s Baby One Minus reeled fast. The bites have come from main river banks to near the back of coves and the seawalls. Docks and boathouses are holding fish that are hitting jigs, soft plastics, and some on crankbaits. Primary points and flats along the creek runs and secondary points in coves are beginning to hold fish that are slowly headed farther in. Crankbaits or Carolina rigs will usually catch a few of these structure holding groups of fish. Depths of these fish are varying from about 6 to 12 feet deep up the lake to 10 to 20 feet deep down the lake. Rip rap continues to hold a few fish, also. Crankbaits, lightweight Texas rigs, and jig head and worm rigs are good.
Lake Blackshear
Forecast by Rusty Parker 229.322.6864 • ragfly@bellsouth.net
The weather has finally gotten to where it is very comfortable to go out after some big ole slabs here on Lake Blackshear. A couple of weeks ago, a friend and I were able to spend a short time on the water for some slab crappie. What surprised me was that most of the ones we caught were in less than 5 feet of water. That particular day we were able to keep 17 really nice crappie by shooting shallow brush piles. Once again they were biting the chartreuse/pink/chartreuse and chartreuse/ watermelon/chartreuse. Also the water temp, best I can remember, was around 79 and has hovered around anywhere from 75 to 79 recently, and dropping as we get deeper into the fall pattern. Recently, I have received reports that the crappie are biting great in deep water suspended around 15 to 18 feet deep. Most of the people I have talked to have been catching them by tight lining minnows. A few have come from around deep water docks, but not as many as I thought. Some places to try for those slabs is down close to the dam in the channel not far from Loran Williams Park, also out in front of Collins Branch and also in the river channel. Another great place to try is north of the Cedar Creek on the west ledge of the channel. Then you can move way upriver just before you get to Spring Creek. Just before you get to Spring Creek there is an island on the left side that has been producing some good slabs. Just as you pass the island headed north, stop about midway of the island and drop a few tight lines in about 27 feet of water and very slowly drift around, and you should be able to catch some good slabs. Hey, just wanted to let the people that are fishing for catfish that Brad at Flint River Outdoors has cottonseed cakes for sale. May your catch be large and plentiful and God bless you all.
Lake Oconee
Forecast by Mark Smith Reeltime Guide Service (404) 803-0741 reeltime@bellsouth.net
Lake Oconee is 1.5 feet low with the lake clear with a little stain up the rivers. Water temperature is in the upper 70s. Hybrid fishing is good. Due to the cooler water the fish are schooling on top all over the lake. I would suggest having a popping cork ready so when they come up you will be ready. Some of these schools have some big fish while other schools contain small ones. Watch the size of the bait these fish will be chasing. Your larger bait will have the better fish. Crappie fishing is good. A lot of crappie have moved to brush in 15 feet of water, but the fish are only 5 to 7 foot deep. Trolling has started to pick up in the back of Sugar Creek and also in the mouth of most of the main creeks. The bites have been very light but some fish in the 1.5 to 2 pound range have been caught.

Lake Harding
Forecast by Guide Paul Tyre paultyrefishing@yahoo.com 850-264-7534
Forecast by Steve “Colonel” McCorkle stevemccorkle61@yahoo.com If you read my article from last month or you live in the area of Lake Harding, you know the water has been drawn down. The lake is approximately 8 feet below normal pool, and most docks and boat ramps are not accessible to the lake. The water levels are supposed to rise after November 1, and the speed the water returns back to full pool will depend on inflows of water which may be affected some by the amount of rainfall we have during that time. Georgia Power expects the lake to be back at full pool hopefully within a week of November 1. The water temperatures are still in the 70’s and can be in the upper 60’s early in the morning or at night. The water is very clear, and as mentioned above, is low. Caution should be used when navigating the lake as many areas are not accessible due to the low water levels. Additionally, there is structure that normally is not a danger, but with the lower water levels can be a major hazard. I recommend going onto the Lake Harding Facebook site and looking at some of the aerial drone and UAV feeds that have been posted so you can see the area before you try to navigate by boat. Areas such as Osanippa Creek behind the bridge are not accessible. The mouth of Osanippa Creek and the Chattahoochee River are also dangerous. Upriver, the water levels make it very dangerous. Traveling past the small island two miles south of the sandbar is not a smart decision unless you travel at idle speed. In fact, there are dangers all over the lake so please use caution. Fishing is good if you can get your boat in the water. All species of fish are biting, and due to the lower water levels, fish can be targeted easier. Basically, locate the baitfish and you will find the fish. Best lures for largemouth bass, spotted bass, hybrids and striped bass are Rat-L-Traps, small crankbaits, spinnerbaits or chatterbaits. The fish are feeding along the banks on the shad and replicating the shad is your best bet. Crappie are also feeding on the shad and can be caught along the banks in pockets or in the channels around structure. Best baits are small jigs or minnows. Look for fishing to continue to be good as the water levels are brought back up in November, but as the water levels rise, the fish should return to a normal fall pattern. The weather should continue to stay somewhat moderate based on weather patterns, so the water temperatures should remain in the upper 60’s.

NOVEMBER 2016
Water temperature: 82 to 85 degrees, lake level: one foot below full pool, clarity: clear. We are finally getting into our fall fishing season with cooler days here on Lake Seminole. The bass have started turning onto their fall feed and are chasing the baitfish all over the lake. There's nothing like going out and seeing the ripple of the baitfish with the bass chasing them, and throwing your Douglas Adams from Panama City with a big Seminole bass white Strike King Tour Grade Buzzbait right in the middle of it and catching a big bass. There's been a flipping bite as the sun comes up and the activity slows down. Try flipping with an ounce to an ounce and half tungsten weight with a beaver-style bait like a Charlie's Worms Flippin' Bug in black and blue color. The upper third of Spring Creek has been producing well with reaction baits like a Strike King Sexy Dawg in bone color fished around the grass lines along the banks. Spring Creek is beautiful this time of year when the leaves are starting to turn and it's nice and cool outside. The Flint River below Bainbridge has been productive for bass and crappie, fishing the grass lines closest to the deeper water. The campers down in Bass Island Campground at Wingate's Lunker Lodge have been bringing crappie in on minnows and light jigs fished along the edges of the old river channel. They are catching limits every day then having some awesome fish fries. Hybrids and stripers have been schooling on the main lake and are being caught on Alabama Rigs rigged with a 4" Charlie's Worm Alabama Minnow in pearl white. The ones we've seen are huge and the folks love pulling them in!

Lake Jackson
Forecast by Brian Lee leebrian16@yahoo.com
Water temperature: 69-74 degrees, water clarity: clear/stained. The early morning bite has been on a variety of baits. Topwater is catching fish as long as you are finding activity. Long shallow points, rocks & sea walls are the target areas. Finding baitfish in these areas increases your chances of bites. Shallow running crankbaits are catching fish as well, targeting the same areas. A big bite can come early on either of these baits. As the sun comes up, just follow the shad and switch to a deeper running crankbait in shad patterns. Shaky heads are catching the less aggressive fish. Brush is a key once the sun is up. Don't hesitate to stick with topwater, as the action may slow down, but you can still get a big bite. Shallow docks with rocks or brush with a jig is also producing good quality bites. As the water temp continues to drop, the bait will school up and the bass will be close. Take advantage of the cooler temps as Jackson only gets better. Some big bags can be caught. The lake is less crowded this time of year making it more enjoyable for the bass fisherman. Until next month take a child fishing so they too can enjoy the outdoors. Tight lines.

Where Can I Catch Big Catfish in Georgia? Do you want to catch giant catfish in Georgia? If you said the Southeast, or even neighboring states, I could tell you plenty of places to go. Only a few hours away there is amazing giant catfishing in Guntersville AL, Chattanooga TN, and Santee Cooper SC to name a few. Then, if you want to go a little further, there are even more possibilities. The Mississippi River in Memphis TN has big catfish. I was on the dock at Mudd Island a few weeks ago when Bill Dance, Jeff Dodd and Jon Worden pulled up with a 69 pound blue that Bill had caught that morning. Yes, Bill Dance, the fishing legend, loves trophy catfishing too. Both fish are alive and well to live another day. Guntersville has the same kind of fishing, monster blues and flatheads abound there. Where can you go and hope to land a big blue or flathead in Georgia? The truth is there are many large catfish in Georgia. The state record flathead is 83 pounds from the Altamaha, and the state record blue is 80 pounds caught from the Walter F. George Reservoir. Last week, the Lake Oconee record was shattered with a 69 pound blue being reeled in. There are a lot of other great rivers and lakes all over Georgia that contain giant catfish. The Coosa and Ocmulgee Rivers come to mind. Lake Jackson also has a growing population.
8 SOUTHWEST GA EAST AL
So my question to you is would you like to catch more giant catfish like this in Georgia? I know I sure would! So here is what I am going to ask you to do to help grow more monster catfish in Georgia’s lakes and rivers: when you catch large catfish, release them. I have talked to many fishermen in Georgia who have broken state records with rods and reels and released the fish to fight another day. To these conservationists I say, “Thank you!” If we all work together, we could be catching trophy catfish in many areas of Georgia. I am sure Georgia has dozens of blue catfish and flatheads that approach, and some that surpass, the 100 pound mark. So why are so few catfish over 50 pounds caught in Georgia? There are several possible factors that contribute to the scarcity of these great fish. Many catfishermen have the mindset that blue and flathead fish are an unlimited resource. They are “just catfish”. Funny, those “just catfish” if released back into the water can grow to trophy sizes and one day be the story of a lifetime for people all of ages that catch them. So what can you do to help Georgia keep these giant catfish alive and swimming and, most importantly, reproducing? Turn back big fish. Even the 20 pound fish have made it over the hump and are on their way

to growing BIG. The best eating fish are 5 to 15 pounds. Turn the others back to catch and release again when they are bigger and bigger. Also, when you do catch big catfish hold them with two hands. Putting too much pressure on the fish’s jaw by hanging all of its weight on its jaw can dislocate and damage the jaw and may result in the fish dying after release. Be careful not to damage the gills, this is a slow killer for the fish also. What we need is for more and more people to encourage CPR: Catch, Photo and Release. If we do, we can see Georgia grow monster catfish. I’m not sure what next month’s article will be on but remember, if you have an empty seat on your boat that needs filling, or a great farm pond you want to share, shoot me an email and maybe it will be about fishing with you! Where Have All The Bait Shop's Gone?
By David and Renae Randall
I have been wondering lately about my mortality. Not my own personal one but our family owned tackle shop. I remember when I started out in this profession. There were so many tackle shops in our area, and now there are just a few. Some of the shops have closed due to personal illness or death, and some have decided that they want to change to just hunting, and others just couldn’t keep up, so they closed. A dear customer came into the store the other day and he said that he couldn’t believe that with all the bodies of water around this area that there weren’t more bait and tackle stores. I know that there are some around, but they just sell a few things and a little live bait. One thing about a fisherman or a boater, they will travel many miles to find what they are looking for. Anyone can sell fishing tackle or boat supplies, so there has to be something else that brings them back time and time again. Some people might think that it is a “trivial” thing that Mr. Brown just has to have his white Spro frog with a black bottom for a tournament he is fishing, or that Ms. Smith wants only a white cup holder for her boat. It isn’t trivial at all. It’s important, especially to them. And if it’s important to them, then it should be important to you as a business owner to have what they need, even if you have to special order it. Because without our customers, we wouldn’t be in business, and we wouldn’t have the pleasure of knowing all these wonderful people who truly enjoy their sport. But you just sell worms and boat parts, how exciting can that be? Oh my gosh, it is exciting because you get to hear all the fishing stories from most everyone that comes in. I learn something new every day. And to hear the relief in a customer’s voice when you actually have the part they need for their boat, so they can get back on the water. Just like any business, or at least ours, it really isn’t about the money anymore, it’s about being happy doing what you love to do. Of course, you have to have money to pay your bills, but if you aren’t enjoying what you do every day, then “it is” time to get another job or retire. Remember the show “Cheers”? The place you could go where everybody knows your name? I think it’s great when you can go somewhere and someone remembers who you are and really cares about you. I get great personal satisfaction when I can remember what a customer likes to fish with and have it in stock, or that we can remember the problems a customer has had with his or her boat. Then, of course, there is the internet. We can’t compete with some of the prices that the tackle warehouses sell their products for, but we certainly can have the product in stock and have more colors, and then there is shipping. And that’s cool. We can’t have everything, but what we can have is great customer service, a friendly smile, a hug or two, and encouraging words and be available for questions. There will come a time, in the future, that mom and pop stores like ours will cease to exist and everything will be done online or with a voice on the phone. Or the stores will be so big that the personal touch of a small business won’t be there. So for now, Randall Marine in Phenix City will continue to be “the boat and tackle store, where everybody knows your name”.

Not The Last One
The sweat was pouring off my face, the veins in my arms were filled with oxygenated blood and stood out and wriggled like snakes as I gripped the rod with both hands. The rod I was using had the girth of a pool stick and both biceps were burning like they were on fire. My heart was beating at a rate that I had never experienced before and the edges of my vision were slowly closing in. I had been fighting the fish for less than 5 minutes. “Be careful what you wish for”. I had heard that saying all of my life but I had never faced a challenge in life where I thought that applied to me. That was until the 600 pound blue Marlin took one of our trolling baits. From the moment that I grabbed that rod, also the fact that I was now 50 years old, I thought that I may have just bitten off more that I could chew. He was about 200 yards from the boat when he went completely airborne for the first time, and that was when I made my pledge. I was going to catch this fish or he was going to have to literally kill me. This story would go all lot better if the weather had been gorgeous and the water had been smoother. Truth is that it was raining buckets and the boat was throwing us around like rag dolls, but it didn’t matter. There were three generations of Vineyard on that boat and this was just one of many trips we had taken together. While Moby Dick was keeping me busy, I did have a moment to reflect back to over 25 years ago when my son had caught his first fish. Those of you that have been kind enough to be fans of my writing for the past 30 years may have read that story. It was a very special story to me about my son’s first fish and you would need a calculator to count how many we have caught since the very first time I’d taken him fishing. I remembered how I stood beside
by Noey Vineyard
him and coached him. I remember the shouts of joy and the look of pride on his face when he finally landed the fish. I remember the Zebco 33 and the oversized ball cap he was wearing. He’s thirty years old now and it did my heart good to know that it was him whispering in my ear, telling me the best way to fight the fish, turning the fighting chair to the angle of the fishing, basically he was there the whole time. The big fish went airborne at least seven times and we both screamed with excitement every time we saw the big fish. The reel I was using could hold about 900 feet of line and every time I put the effort in to get him close to the boat, he would empty that reel with ease. I got him close enough several times to see him and marveled at what a beautiful fish the blue marlin is. By the time he had emptied the real six times, I won’t lie. He had me ready to quit. It seemed like I had nothing left to give and all the advantage was to the fish. Then turn by turn of the reel I got him closer until finally something that I wanted to see more than the fish came into view, and that was the leader. On a catch and release fishing to count as a catch, all the first mate has to do is touch the leader and after what seemed like forever, the leader was there. The first mate reached out and touched it and that was when I felt my son put his arms around me and tell me “Good catch dad. I love you.” I will treasure that moment forever. It was a day for the ages. A 600 pound blue Marlin is not even a trophy by anybody’s standards since they do get up to 1300 to 1400 pounds. But as we let this one go and I watched him swim away, it was a trophy to me because my son and I had caught it together. And to add to the magic of the day the big blue Marlin wasn’t the only fish we caught. There were two or three dozen mahi-mahi, five or six wahoo, but mostly it was me, my father, my brother, and my son who had grown from that little boy with a Zebco 33 catching his first fish, into the great man that coached me into catching the fish that I had been wishing for my entire life. We’ve all gotten older now and we don’t do quite as much fishing as we used to together, but if life is good to us and God sees fit to let it happen again, it won’t be the last trip. With much love to my brother Denny, my father, and my son, who watches the water with all the intensity and curiosity that I used to have. More stories like the one above can be found in my book, Daydreams of a Wanderer available at Amazon.

uccessful fishing necks down to two things. The first challenge focuses on finding the species you are planning to catch, and the second phase centers on getting them to eat a bait or strike an artificial. Everybody may know that, but not all anglers achieve their goals on the water. The key lies in planning your day and working your plan. Did you ever wonder why leading guides almost always find and catch fish every time they are on the water. There’s no mystery or deep, dark secret. They know the area they fish, they understand the preferences of the species they seek, and they plan their day in advance. If you fish the same waters repeatedly, you should have a pretty fair idea of where your quarry should be based on the tide, water temperature, bait concentrations and basic experience. Decide before you leave the dock where you plan to start and the next three or four spots if the first one doesn’t pan out. It’s also important to spend sufficient time in each location to make sure you give it a fair chance to produce results. Regardless if you are new to the area or fish there all the time, there are basic approaches you should constantly remember. If you can learn the depth where fish were caught recently, chances are they will still be lingering at that depth even if you don’t know the precise spot. During new and full moons, if you fish the shallows, the tides will be higher and lower. On incoming water, fish will push up shallower and then drop off the flat during the last of the outgoing tide. If you see sharks cruising a flat, that’s a good indication of the depth you should be looking for
fish. For those who prefer trolling, try a zigzag course working at a 45-degree angle deeper and then shallower until you start getting strikes. On the offshore grounds, look for weedlines, debris, currents, birds, baitfish and anything else out of the ordinary. Troll with the current, against the current, from deep to shallow, and shallow to deep until you hit paydirt. Remember the theory of “seats in a restaurant.” Fish tend to hold in very specific places. Even if you catch one, another will replace it shortly. That means you need to keep going back to exact spots where you caught fish in the past. Too many anglers simply fish at random without studying the area they plan to fish. Even if you’ve never fished those waters before, study the currents, the dropoffs and necks of a funnel where water flows in an out in channels. Finally, if you use natural bait, make sure it is fresh and change it frequently so it constantly gives off maximum odor. Live bait should be frisky. Replace it every 15 or 20 minutes. If you prefer artificials, stick with the basics and with lures that have caught fish in the past. You can try new lures when you find the fish and are having a banner day. The price of success is eternal vigilance on the water. Stay alert, follow a game plan, and you should be smiling at the end of the day. ’m going to share some packing tips that’ll help you prepare to kayak fish in remote locations where you’ll rely on what you brought and someone else’s kayak… where you’ll fish on water you know very little about, in an area so remote that once you’re there, you’re there. If you’re like me, you’ll fish from a Hobie Mirage for roosterfish, a fish with an aggressive attitude and a killer Mohawk. When travelling it can be beneficial to share baggage expenses with a friend. We made our own 8’6’’ rod tube that was wide enough to hold eight rods and two gaffs. I use a large dry bag backpack for all my kayak accessories: extra rod tube extenders, gear ties, PFD, headlamp, pliers, cutters, extra dry bags, sunscreen, my TackleWebs, rain gear and other useful tools. Tackle takes up an entire suitcase with lures, hooks, leader and tackle boxes. It doesn’t sound like much until you lay everything out. Terminal tackle has to be checked baggage. I pack my reels in a Pelican case. I use it as a carry on. It also holds my laptop/POV camera. By the time this guy is packed, there isn’t much space, but it gets the job done. You might think your reels can handle the abuse of travel, but all that rattling and banging has the potential to loosen screws and drags. Plus, I’m not comfortable with the thought of losing thousands of dollars in gear. Occasionally I’ve been forced to check my reels. Prepare for the possibility.

ne of the keys to great inshore fishing is being on the water with the right weather. Stable weather between the coldest day of a postfrontal situation and several hours after the passage of the next cold front is critical at this time of year. Stable conditions with normal tide height and movement would the starting point for a good trip. The fish feed actively during this time and are more predictable in location and feeding times. These days would normally have a warming trend with a light onshore wind and slightly dropping barometer. Baitfish tend to be on the surface during these periods and will readily show themselves. Prefrontal conditions are the next choice. This period would be within the 12 hours that a frontal passage is approaching. Barometer is typically dropping and onshore winds can increase to near unsafe conditions that only seasoned mariners should attempt to handle. However, the prefrontal bite if you can go, can produce the biggest fish as well as the most aggressive feeds. The fish are gorging prior to the next high pressure. Also, this is a great day to fish if you like topwater action. Finally, the few hours after a cold front has passed can also be good this month. Focus on drains coming from marshes that empty onto some other structure such as an oyster reef in 3 to 5 feet or a point, drop-off or deeper grass flat with broken bottom. Tobin created the TroutSupport.com instructional series and his products have recieved hundreds of positive reviews from anglers wanting to reach the next level.

raveling across the country for the last three years with the Bassmaster Elite Series has led me to some amazing fishing destinations. I’ve been about as far as one can go in every direction in the United States and have gotten to experience some great fishing. Although I don’t have a definitive answer on where my favorite place to fish is, I will say that without a doubt my favorite fish to target are big northern smallmouth bass. Let’s talk about some of the places I’ve been and what makes the places and the
Lakes. My next experience with northern smallies was on the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York. The Thousand Islands area is a beautiful part of the country and should be on every bass fisherman’s bucket list. The river is full of fish, and a lot of people there seem to fish more for other species so the smallmouth are quite catchable. A little ways away on Lake Ontario is the home of more willing smallmouth. Next on the list is Lake St. Clair in Michigan. St. Clair is
Chums’ new Downstream waterproof bag is a medium-sized shoulder bag or fanny pack for folks who enjoy the outdoors, especially if you like water sports and fishing. It has a roll-top closure that fastens at both ends and is completely airtight and waterproof. The material is very durable, made of double sided TPU-coated nylon and has waterproof RF welded seams. A front pocket with YKK water-resistant zipper is handy for your sunscreen or lip balm and has a drain hole for quick drying. Keep your gear dry with Chums’ new line of accessory cases. Visit www. chums.com or your favorite specialty outdoor retailer to get yours today. Chums came about in 1983 when a Colorado River guide sought a simple way to keep his sunglasses out of the river. Through this innovative idea, the Chums original cotton eyeglasses retainer was born. More than thirty years later, Chums is now a global brand that offers a wide range of outdoor products and apparel. fisheries so special. My very first experience with the Great Lakes was at the Elite Series AOY championship in 2014 in Escanaba, Mich. I ended up finishing that tournament in ninth place and qualified for my first Bassmaster Classic. I was super impressed with the place as soon as I rolled into town. Everyone in Escanaba was very nice and hospitable, which is something you don’t find everywhere these days. It is a nice quiet town much like the Tennessee town I was raised in, with great places to eat and nice places to stay. As far as the fishery, just take a look at the weights from that tournament and they will speak for themselves. Little Bay and Big Bay de Noc are chock-full of big smallmouth as well as walleye, pike, perch and everything else you would expect to find in the Great
unique because you can either fish in the lake, which is great, or you can fish one of the rivers that flows into or out of the lake, which is what I chose to do when I was there. In all these places, smallmouth bass will absolutely chew a small soft plastic bait on a Mustad dropshot hook fished on a MHX EPS 81MLXF rod from Mud Hole Custom Tackle. Catching these fish requires good electronics, so I rely heavily on my Raymarine units to locate the big schools. As I was writing this last week, I got thinking I needed to go and pay those smallmouth a visit. My dad and I jumped in the car, drove to Lake Michigan and had a ball. I would encourage you to do the same before it gets too cold!

here’s stocking trout, and then there’s unintentionally releasing 80,000 rainbow trout into the open ocean. In the short-term, recreational anglers will be the beneficiaries of a $1.5 million accident at a Danish fish farm. Reuters reports that a cargo vessel collided with fish farm nets between Danish Islands in the Baltic Sea on Oct. 11. The fish, which were bound for the slaughterhouse within a few days’ time, weighed about 6.6 pounds each. Recreational anglers are being encouraged to get out on the fjord and catch as many of the escapees as possible. Authorities are concerned the jailbreak could have disastrous consequences for the native sea-run rainbow trout populations. According to the Associated Press report, wild populations are preparing to run up the rivers to spawn right now, and their eggs would make tasty morsels for the farmed fish. Other Danish biologists have dismissed the threat as minimal because the farmed trout are unprepared for life in the wild and are conditioned to heavy feedings. There is a good chance the fish will die of starvation or be consumed by larger predators before they are able to do much damage. One thing is for sure, if there are Walmarts in Denmark, the shelves will be emptied of spinners, salmon eggs, Powerbait and canned corn. There isn’t a stocked trout in the world that can resist Green Giant Niblets.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT PIRANA FISHING LURES With its patented Jet Trail System, Pirana Fishing Lures has given the fishing world one of those “why didn’t someone think of this before” moments. Pirana has taken proven elements of highly successful crankbaits and jerkbaits and given them a new feature that is the most innovative and effective to hit the market in years. These lures leave a bubble trail, an enticement that draws in predatory fish and triggers them to strike. The effectiveness of bubble trails is well documented. Bluewater anglers troll jet head lures. Bass anglers fish gurglers and buzzbaits. Pirana’s Jet Trail System brings the same concept to crankbaits and jerkbaits. With an open mouth and gill slots along the lure’s sides, water is forced through the lure on retrieve to create the jet trail. Pirana has also put a lot into the details. These lures have a finely tuned wobble and dive as well as a rattle chamber for additional noise. Bright red gills, holographic silver eyes, a hex-scale pattern and a high-gloss finish complete the package. The lasting trail of bubbles, however, is what sets them apart. Pirana’s latest, which should hit the market soon, is the new and improved P200, which has a lip above the mouth opening. Whether the target species are redfish, seatrout and snook inshore or largemouth and smallmouth bass or trout in freshwater, anything that will eat a plug will be more likely to eat one with a jet trail. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT UNDERWATER FISH LIGHT If you live on the water or have ever cruised any local canals or shorelines at night, you’ve probably seen how effective and widespread Underwater Fish Light’s products are. They seem to be just about everywhere, and are almost always loaded with fish. Their classic Natural Green lights look amazing in any waterway, but they recently released a new line of Vibrant Green underwater lights that illuminate the water with a richer green color that really stands out from the crowd. In addition to the unique look, these lights are also 50 percent brighter than the classic systems and are perfect for those looking to “out glow” their neighbors. Of course these new lights come backed by the same guarantees that Underwater Fish Light is famous for, including their well known “Fish Guaranteed or Your Money Back” promise. You can try the new Vibrant Green systems or any of their other models for sixty nights in your own waterway, and if you’re not thrilled with the performance of the light, you can return it for a full refund. Obviously they don’t get too many returns. There is also a new line of Caribbean Blue underwater lights that look incredible in clear waterways, but customers outside of the Florida Keys should opt for either the Natural Green or Vibrant Green, as these will look the best in murkier waters. With a 3-year warranty and money back guarantee, you can’t go wrong with Underwater Fish Light. Visit them online at www.FishLight.com or call 1-855-FISH-LIGHT for more information.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT INHIBITOR VCI PRO CHIPS FOR CORROSION PROTECTION Protecting your fishing gear from rust and corrosion has never been easier, or more effective. The Inhibitor VCI offers unrivaled corrosion and rust prevention to protect lures, hooks, reels and more. Fishing tackle is a magnet for rust and corrosion. Many people do not fully appreciate the money and time avid anglers put into building their collection of lures. Rust will damage hooks, split rings and the body of the lure. With VCI Pro Chips you can make sure you never lose any of your fishing equipment to rust. Saltwater speeds up rust and corrosion; protect your fishing tackle from saltwater. Inhibitor VCI Pro Chips are a safe, easy and economical way to ensure your fishing tackle, tool boxes, small part bins and any other small metal items stay rust free. Each chip is treated on both sides with Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors that release a non-toxic vapor to blend with moisture and oxygen and stop rust and corrosion. The special vapors penetrate into the smallest cracks or crevices, providing total protection in marine environments. There is no scent residue. Fish will never know you are rust free! With Inhibitor rust prevention products, even saltwater cannot cause your fishing tackle to rust or corrode. They are great for parts bins and tool boxes at home, too. It works on all ferrous and non-ferrous metals: brass, bronze, copper, aluminum, steel, and stainless steel. Visit www.theinhibitor.com to get your 20-pack of VCI Pro Chips for only $5.99.

Ever considered how different your life would be if you didn’t have to hand over the bulk of your sales revenue to your employer? Have you ever thought about how much easier your sales job could be if you didn’t have to beg your sales manager for every little extra thing that you wanted to give your customer? Ever wondered what it would be like to control your own time? You don’t have to wonder anymore. Coastal Angler and its freshwater component The Angler Magazine are offering magazine franchises throughout the continental U.S. and abroad. Now, you can be the publisher and completely control the advertising department of your magazine. After nine years of franchising this magazine and with 42 current locations, we can say with confidence that these home-based magazine locations can be opened in nearly any location with a minimum population base of 500,000 and an active angling community. We have also identified our ideal candidate as being someone with previous media sales experience. Male or female, success in this endeavor is gaged more on advertising sales than fishing prowess. If you are a current or former media advertising sales rep, you owe it to yourself to check out our franchise opportunities. For more information, call 888-800-9794 or email info@ coastalanglermagazine.com.
Outstanding Customer Support Media Sales Representatives wanted immediately for fishing magazine franchisee opportunity. Must have 2 to 5 years media sales experience. Dependable transporation, a love of the outdoors and a good solid work ethic. Type A’s welcome.
