tretching 500 miles across the northern side of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Trench is the deepest in the Atlantic Ocean. This 6-mile-deep feature is part of what makes the Virgin Islands one of the world’s best sportfishing destinations. Here, where the Atlantic Ocean borders the clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Virgin Islands rise as the peaks of an enormous underwater mountain chain. The islands offer some of the best diving, snorkeling and most beautiful beaches anywhere, but it is off these islands that serious anglers come to play. Beneath the surface, the topography is spectacular. About 20 miles north of St. Thomas, the travel hub of the U.S. Virgin Islands, the North Drop falls precipitously to depths of more than 28,000 feet into the Puerto Rico Trench. Cool Atlantic currents are stirred off Virgin Gorda, and sea life abounds. The big pelagic species congregate to feed on an abundance of baitfish drawn by the drop. A similar situation occurs off the South Drop, just 8 miles south of St. Thomas, and the smaller drops around St. Croix. Short boat rides put anglers on abundant baitfish and the bigger fish that feed on them. Marlin can be caught year-round, but spring to fall is peak time for blue marlin, which show up in numbers and feed aggressively around the full moons. The bite is legendary. The IGFA Women’s alltackle world record, a 1,073-pound blue marlin, was caught off the Virgin Islands, along with 24 other world records over the years. The granders—1,000-pound-plus marlin—show up on occasion, but the Virgin Islands also offer numbers. During the USVI Open/Atlantic Blue Marlin Tournament, 207 blue marlin were released over four days of fishing. Marlin average about 350 pounds out of St. Thomas, and 500-pounders are caught regularly. But blues aren’t the only game in town. The location of these islands 6

almost seems strategic. Sailfish, white marlin, tuna, wahoo, dolphin… the most sought after gamefish for sport and the table frequent these drops in good numbers to feed. Working the drop by trolling rigs across the depth contours produces consistently good action year-round. The sailfish bite peaks October through March. Yellowfin tuna are present late summer through winter, and blackfin and skipjack tuna provide

action year-round. Wahoo are also a year-round target, and dolphin fishing peaks in fall. The fishing is world class, and the Virgin Islands are also easy to get to. A short plane ride from the continental U.S. puts anglers in the middle of the action. And with lodging that ranges from quaint to luxurious, there are options for anyone who wants to live out their offshore fantasy. To learn more about the Puerto Rico Trench, go to

he numbers don’t lie. Guatemala’s Pacific coast is the most productive sailfish destination in the world. Days of double-digit releases would be considered spectacular anywhere. Off Guatemala, it’s just an average day. Annual release rates show a dozen sailfish per boat, per day. And that’s just a year-round average. It is not unusual during peak seasons for boats to raise more than 50 or 60 sails a day, sometimes a lot more. In March of 2006, Capt. Ron Hamlin, and the anglers on the Captain Hook, released 124 sailfish in a single day less than 15 miles off Guatemala. The legendary former skipper out of Casa Vieja Lodge in Puerto San Jose still holds the record. For conventional anglers, it’s pretty much a sure thing. For fly anglers, it’s the best odds you’ll find. The concentrations of sailfish in this small slice of the Pacific are astounding. But it’s not just sails. Natural factors such as dramatically shifting currents, temperature barriers and high oxygen levels close to the surface combine to hold baitfish year-round. The eddy formations that swirl off the Guatemalan coast are crowded with life, including the big pelagics and the fish they feed on. There are more Pacific sailfish than can be found anywhere, but there are also marlin, wahoo, slammer Dorado and yellowfin tuna. Casa Vieja Lodge says blue marlin in the 200- to 400-pound range are thickest April through July, with black marlin up to 400 pounds showing up December through March and smaller striped marlin November through January. On average, every Casa Vieja boat encounters marlin every three days while targeting sailfish. During peak billfish seasons of December through March and then again from May through July, grand slams are an everyday possibility. Boats fish anywhere from 2 to 50 miles out in an area renowned for flat seas. The most consistently productive area is a canyon known as “The Pocket.” Only about 40 nautical miles wide, The Pocket drops to depths of 3,500 to 4,000 feet. Those constantly shifting currents deflect off the walls of the pocket stirring up nutrient rich waters that attract bait and big gamefish. Casa Vieja takes the fishing very seriously. Guided by some of the world’s top-tagging and award winning captains, their fleet of classically maintained 35’ Contenders and 40’ Sportfishers consistently produces world-class results. They are inheritors of history. A majority of the

captains and lodge staff were employees of the original Fins ’n Feathers Inn that launched the Guatemalan sportfishing industry. These are the same sportsmen who have cared for the fishery since it exploded onto the sportfishing scene in the 1990s. With total release using circle hooks, the conservation philosophy has been central to Casa Vieja’s operations for more than a decade. With this kind of stewardship, as well as emphasis from the Guatemalan Government on limiting commercial fishing, the fishery continues to thrive. The lodge was also designed by lifelong sportsmen who know it is best to recover from a non-stop day of action on the water in worldclass accommodations. Luxurious rooms and top-notch local cuisine are paired with a staff trained to fill the needs of discerning travelers. It’s the perfect place to relive the day’s catch or dream of the morning’s possibilities. For more information on fishing Guatemala and the Casa Vieja Lodge, go to www.casaviejalodge.com.

our Rip Roller is tearing up the water as you retrieve it in short quick jerks. Suddenly the water explodes from the vicious strike of a peacock bass. In your excitement and shock, you instinctively jerk your rod up before the peacock has had a chance to get the hook firmly in his mouth, and 6 inches of lure and three massive treble hooks come flying past your head. Your first encounter with the huge peacock bass of Brazil’s Amazon will be one you never forget. Fishing for this massive, hard-fighting predator can be best described to anglers as hooking into a 20-pound smallmouth bass that is having a bad day. To top off this fishing adventure, you are fishing over 1,000 miles from the ocean in the heart of the world’s largest rain forest on black water rivers that are home to more than 2,500 species of fish and the world’s greatest diversity of flora and fauna. Anglers will catch four or five different species of peacock bass, ranging from the popoca and butterfly species weighing an average of 3 to 5 pounds to the massive paca or arzu, the current world record of which is a 29-pounder caught by Andrea Zaccherini in 2010. Anglers can also catch aerobatic arowana, several species of catfish weighing upwards of 200 pounds, wolf fish and myriad other species. Peacocks will readily hit topwater baits on waters that aren’t heavily pressured, the most famous being the big propeller driven Woodchopper and its clones, as well as the more subtle Spook type baits. As with most species of fish, subsurface jerkbaits and jigs will produce bigger numbers of fish caught than topwater lures. Fly fishermen have discovered this game

hey call Islamorada the Sportfishing Capital of the World. This slim string of six small islands about halfway down the Florida Keys separates the Atlantic from the Gulf of Mexico, and just offshore in the Atlantic, warm blue currents of the Gulf Stream deliver a steady flow of baitfish and the big migrating pelagic species that feed on them. The Continental Shelf is a highway for swordfish that move through in depths of 1,400 to 1,900 feet with a consistency that may be unmatched anywhere in the world. It is possible to target these deepwater giants any month of the year off Islamorada, and even during the day. But it is sportfishing only for hardcore anglers. Swordfish are elusive anywhere, the most difficult of the billfish to catch, and fights lasting several hours are the reward for tempting a bite from 150- to 400-pound or larger fish deep in the abyss. If catching a swordfish is one of the boxes that remains to be checked off on your bucket list, you’d be hard pressed to find a better place to do it. A little closer in, where the Gulf Stream swings over broken bottom and the offshore humps Islamorada has become famous for, it creates rips where disoriented baitfish become easy prey for dolphin, wahoo, sailfish, kingfish and tuna. In the summer months, flocks of birds are a dead giveaway for dolphinfish pushing frenzied bait to the surface. When that’s not going on, fish can be found trolling feather or jet head lures and plugs. A bite while trolling means it’s time to slow down and cast baits to catch other fish drawn to the same area. Sometimes this is met with spectacular results, especially for mahi, which tend to gather in numbers. Some of the most spectacular action on the humps comes from blackfin tuna. It can show up in spurts any time of year, but fall typically brings a push of 10-pound-plus tuna that can be incited into surface-feeding frenzies. Chumming up blackfins with pilchards is a very visual experience that allows even anglers armed with fly rods to hook up with multiple hard-fighting fish.

NOVEMBER 2016

As the tuna move toward the reefs with the late fall and winter baitfish migrations, the bigger fish begin to show up, and kite fishing becomes one of the preferred methods for teasing up fish 20 pounds and larger. The other fish that shows up to take advantage of baitfish from November through the winter is sailfish. There’s a reason why Islamorada is home to so many sailfish tournaments during the winter months. It can seem like everyone drops everything they’re doing for a chance to fly release flags. In fall and winter, sails move in to gorge on abundant ballyhoo around the reefs. This can present opportunities to anglers less than 5 miles from the docks off the islands of Islamorada. The 130- to 200-foot depths produce the most consistent bite where strong currents and changes in water color to a deep royal blue give away the edges and rips where sailfish hunt. Trolling or kite fishing the reefs can produce numerous fish in the 60-pound range when the bite is on. But on sunny days when the weather cooperates, it is possible to sight fish for sailfish inside the reefs in water as shallow as 20 or 30 feet. Even smaller boats can get in on this action. From the tower, crewmembers seek out the fish. When the alarm goes out, chum and baits are deployed. There’s really no technique more exciting. Anglers in the know await those bluebird skies on winter days when seeking out sailfish becomes as much hunting as it is fishing. And if all the offshore action isn’t enough to convince any angler to start making plans right now, fall also brings some of the biggest bonefish of the year to the Islamorada flats. Time it right, and you can be fishing the flats in the morning and trolling the bluewater in the afternoon. What more could you ask for?

THE ONLY DURABLE HIGH QUALITY ROD WRAP

Russ Lane: Bassmaster Elite Series™ Pro

“Winn overwraps help me as a tournament angler in so many ways. They’re great in all weather conditions. I don’t have to physically squeeze my rod during a cast as hard as I did with cork or EVA. That gives me a better degree of accuracy with less fatigue. Multiple color options also allow me to organize different rod actions and lengths using different colors. I honestly could never use a rod again without my Winn overwrap!”

By Mike Pehanich

I

believe this is the Golden Age of fishing tackle. For my money, the amazing quality and range of rods available to us today is clear evidence of that claim. Improvements in graphite quality, skeletal reel seats and lightweight braid-resistant guides have paved a path to conspicuous performance benefits, and rods conscientiously tailored to nearly every angling task are helping anglers execute specific techniques with a flourish. Yet, until recently, the seat of angler control—the handle—seemed stuck in the Dark Ages. Cork, a survivor from a bygone era, seemed like it would dominate rod handles forever, with EVA foam the only alternative material allowed any territorial claim. But progress has come, finally, to the rod handle. In recent years, alternative rod grip materials have hit the market including carbon fiber, a slick lightweight option; tough Kevlar tubing; composite cork, a denser and more durable cork-based material blend; and Syncork, a light and durable material with a rough-hewn appearance. Some have used shrinkwrap to give EVA foam a different look and feel, too. Color and design options have emerged, with even a “camo cork” available

now to rod builders. One of the biggest breakthroughs may have come two years ago when Winn Grips (www.winngrips.com), the Huntington Beach, California-based maker of grips for sports equipment, introduced its interchangeable grip system and rolled out a full line of handsomely designed rod grips made from its patented WinnDry material, which maintains its tacky feel in wet conditions and weather extremes. Early Winn prototypes were colorful and interesting, and they provided a hint of the performance benefits of ergonomic comfort and angler control that has come to characterize the grips today. Yet some thought early designs too similar to the golf grips that have made Winn a global leader in that field. Winn’s founder, aerospace engineering pioneer Dr. Ben Huang, took angler feedback to heart. Winn’s grip system has evolved into a versatile line of rod handle components. Rod makers, from leading brands to custom builders, have caught on quickly to the advantages of the grips. At ICAST 2016 in Orlando, Lew’s Fishing Tackle captured three Best of Show awards for products featuring Winn’s advanced polymer materials in rod handles and reel knobs. Lew’s, Kistler, Denali and others displayed new rod lines with Winn grips. Winn has introduced an element of “fashion” to fishing rods, too, by offering a broad range of bold colors and multi-colored and sometimes multi-textured designs that can complement tournament jerseys, boat colors and wraps, or represent a signature look or the colors of a favorite sports team. Winn’s quieter contribution to today’s tackle evolution could come in the emerging practice of “retrofitting” favorite old rods with Winn rod grips and in routinely fitting cork and EVA rod handles with a Winn “skin” in the form of Winn Superior Rod Wrap, a tape-like overwrap.

Center s SPEARFISHING TRAVEL

SHERI DAYE

A

s spearfishing continues to grow and capture people’s interest, so has the amount of travel related to spearfishing. The allure of exotic locations, different species, and the possibility of world records has spawned a new breed of traveler, and resorts and charters are happy to cater to this crowd. In Florida, there are live-aboard charters that take scuba divers to fertile grounds out of the lower Keys into the Gulf or the Dry Tortugas – such as Seaclusive Charters. There are also charters that cater to smaller groups of freediving spearfishers such as Killshot, Into the Blue, and more. The Keys are especially attractive to vacationers, as the scenery above the water can be just as interesting as below. In the Bahamas, resorts with marinas are well-equipped to handle divers, some of them weekend warriors coming by boat from Florida. The clear waters and beautiful marine life are a big draw. Bahamian law requires freediving-only and the use of either slings or polespears for spearfishing. Rather than being a deterrent, it’s created a new breed of divers who enjoy this simple and primitive form of hunting. The ability to add cracked conch or a lobster tail to a meal is a big bonus. Both coasts of the United States have a number of spearfishing charters to choose from as well. Divers can enjoy a change of scenery and try their luck at hunting white sea bass in the kelps of California, cobias off the rigs of Louisiana, stripers in the waters off Rhode Island, African Pompanos off the wrecks of Hatteras – all exciting catches. International travel has increased significantly in the past few years. Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica are a big draw with desirable species such as Cubera Snappers, cobias, and tunas – depending on which coast. Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga, and Ascension Island have been yielding world record wahoos and tunas, drawing the more hard-core divers. Here’s some quick tips to make sure your travel is fun, safe, and productive: 1. Go with friends and watch out for each other - in the water and out.

2. Choose a reputable charter that specializes in spearing and ask the captain about fish and conditions. Make sure your skill level is up to par for that location. 3. Make sure you are properly equipped for the fish you are targeting and follow the law. Be aware of the local fishing regulations and limits. 4. Use a Sportube to pack your spearguns and use the wetsuits for padding. Tell TSA you have “fishing equipment” rather than using the word “speargun”. 5. Buy DAN insurance – they are a reputable agency known for covering divers, including evacuation services. For divers in search of adventure, traveling to different hunting grounds can yield the trip (and fish) of a lifetime. Life is short, so get out and enjoy it! he number 64 is not just some number to me. It represents the countries where I have travelled to fish. Because of my passion for fishing, my work as a travelling fishing guide and outdoors journalist, and my job in product development for various brands and companies, I have had the opportunity to fish all over the world. The following is a list of my top 5 fishing destinations and a little information on why it is worth visiting them. 5) Sette Cama, Gabon: If catching big fish on lures from the shore is your thing, then this is the place. Near the Equator on Africa’s South Atlantic coast, it offers the wildest stretch of coastline on the continent. You can hook 150-pound tarpon, 80-pound cubera snapper, 60-pound African threadfin, 50-pound barracuda or 40-pound jack… while walking and casting plugs along the beaches and the inlet.

4) Vastervik, Sweden: A 4,000-island Scandinavian archipelago where fresh and saltwater of the Baltic Sea meet, brings predators to feed mainly on herring. I’ve been there a dozen times because there are true chances for really, really big pike. The local record is 26kg, so around 57 pounds. 3) Archipelago de Chiriqui, Panama: Cubera snapper have long been some of my favorite fish. They have a finicky side as well as the brutal power of a hammer beating steel once hooked. On northern Panama’s Pacific Coast, the islands and rocks in the Chiriqui region are where I have experienced great success catching cubera on lures. I’m not much interested in dropping a 2-pound bonita and waiting for a bite. I’d rather use a Stick Shadd 182fsk or 210sk on 80-pound braid. Cast it, let it sink and retrieve it with twitches, jerks and pauses. The area is also a great for really big roosterfish and tunas. 2) Great Barrier Reef, Australia: When you’re 200 miles away from the shoreline and the depth is only about 20 feet, you know you’re on a special spot. This is what the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea off Australia’s eastern coast are all about. There are dozens of valuable game fish, from the biggest of all the jacks, the giant trevally, to the incredible wahoo bite of August, the elusive Chinaman, snappers and groupers, and of course giant marlin. The best fishing organization I ever fished with is based there, the Nomad Mothership. 1) Venice, Louisiana, USA: The consistency of the fishery in the Mississipi River Delta is something awesome and unique. Venice offers both inshore and offshore fishing at its best. It’s hard to go there and not be exhausted after catching so many fish more regularly than any place I have ever been. To me, it is definitively the hottest fishing spot in the world. Redfish, seatrout, yellowfin tuna, red snapper, giant jacks… I especially love to fish in the saltwater marsh, using a small Flatt Shad 50 Snagless that I jig like a soft plastic. This lure is longer lasting than soft plastics, which matters when there are so many bites! Patrick Sebile is the owner and lure designer of Sebile Innovative Fishing (www.sebile.com).

ecently, more than 170 charter captains gathered on Florida’s east coast at Jensen Beach to attend a two-day educational, informative and competitive event in support of their livelihoods and continued longevity of the profession. The event, hosted by Costa Del Mar at River Palm Cottages & Fish Camp, offered fun competitions between captains, bonfires, films and a pig roast, but the encompassing message was conservation. Those in attendance were Costa charter captains from as far away as Michigan, New York and North Carolina. Most, however, were Floridian guides who make their living in these waters and are with the movement Captains For Clean Water. Check out the website www.captainsforcleanwater. org and sign up with your support. Otherwise, it will soon be the Neverglades instead of the Everglades. The Captains For Clean Water movement is the result of years of mismanagement by the Corps of Engineers. Our nationally recognized estuaries in Florida are in long-term collapse due to damming, ditching

and draining of the River of Grass. Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie Rivers are artificially connected to Lake Okeechobee by way of man-made canals that allow billions of gallons of nutrient- and sediment-laden freshwater into them. Lake Okeechobee discharges are killing seagrass, oysters and other aquatic life. Nitrogen, phosphorous, insecticides (from spraying) and other pollutants linger for years in the estuaries. These chemicals fuel toxinproducing algal blooms and increased red tide outbreaks. Moreover, the Herbert Hoover Dike surrounds Lake Okeechobee and prevents water from flowing south into the Everglades, as it has historically done. Florida Bay and the Everglades now receive about 1/6th of the freshwater flow it once did, killing thousands of acres of seagrass because of high levels of salinity. The solution in short is: Lake Okeechobee must be cleaned in man-made wetlands before releasing water south through the Everglades. More storage and storm water treatment areas south of Lake Okeechobee are required. Legislation is already passed with the money available to acquire land for additional storage. Everyone needs to get on board and sign the petition (referendum). Go to www.captainsforcleanwater.org for more information and how to support the movement. Many attendees brought their fishing gear and took advantage of the annual mullet run from the beach, the dock and on boats. Those of us who took our boats had the opportunity to welcome visiting guides aboard to experience Florida fishing at its finest. Snook, tarpon and jack crevalle were inshore and off the beaches. Offshore pelagics such as dolphin and sailfish were capitalizing on the mullet as well. My first mate, Vicki, and I welcome aboard Capt. Jason Coslow and his wife Kathy of KC-1 Sport Fishing of Lake Michigan. Kathy hooked up her first tarpon along the St. Lucie inlet. Jason assisted Vicki in landing and boating a sailfish over 5 feet long. Contact Captain Terry Fisher of Fish Face Charters in Cape Coral, Fla. at 239-357-6829 or fishfacecharters@yahoo.com. See his website at www. fishfacecharters.com. He is also available as a captain for hire on your vessel.

What makes a pair of pliers your favorite? For me it is functionality, durability and dependability. The SCARFACE by Danco Pliers is exactly that for me. These pliers have a sturdy frame that does not flex or bend and fail-proof cutters that cut anything I put them on. A comfortable rubber non-slip grip keeps my hand from slipping when wet or covered in fish slime, while the lanyard keeps my pliers attached to my hip if I should drop them. Stainless steel construction and a titanium coating ensure these pliers will not rust or corrode (we all know how harsh saltwater is). An internal spring-loaded hinge assists with keeping these pliers from getting hard to open and close. If you were ever to actually wear a set out, replaceable cutters are inexpensive and easy to swap out. I don’t leave home without a pair of Danco pliers, as I have become dependent on them both on and off of the water. To me, these things make the ultimate pair of pliers. That all Danco pliers and knives come with a lifetime warranty, a 30-day return policy and free shipping as well as an unbeatable price point is all icing on the cake. — Craig McMicken; @backwatercartel

he Stuart Sailfish Club recently announced the 63rd Light Tackle Tournament and the third-annual Florida Sailfish Amateur Championship to be held Dec. 8-11 at the prestigious Sailfish Point Marina on Hutchinson Island in Stuart, Fla. Tournament Chair Thomas Dyer, who is also president of the Stuart Sailfish Club, is hoping to build on the success of last year’s tournament. “We were sold out last year, and I expect that to happen again this year,” Dyer said. “This is one of Florida’s largest purses, and the event is taking place at a prestigious and private marina that many folks will never have the opportunity to fish from. We are honored that Sailfish Point will once again host this tournament.” The Tournament will again hold two divisions of competitors, the Professional Division and an Amateur Division. This year’s Tournament will be limited to the first 30 entries in the Professional Division and the first 20 entries for the Amateur Division. The Professional Division will fish all three days and the Amateur Division selects fishing any two of the three days. The Calcutta for the Professional Division could reach $345,000 if all the professional boats participate and would be one of the largest purses in Florida. For more information and registration packages, contact the Stuart Sailfish Club at sailfish@stuartsailfishclub.com or call (772) 286-9373.

ith destinations as the theme for this month’s magazine, I thought it would be great to revisit the true essence of why we get outdoors in the first place and work through what really makes an experience

special. At iTrekkers, we are all about making the experience as great as possible for the newcomers that we introduce to the outdoors. It takes a lot of hard work and attention to detail ensuring the best possible trip. That said, the true essence of an outdoor adventure is the emotional impact it has on an individual. With that understanding, you can make a trip go from good to great. From the beginning of time, Man has loved to be outdoors. The sensation of staring into a fire, sitting on a boat with a line in the water focused on feeling

the rod in your hands, or that of dipping a paddle over and over as you propel farther into the wilderness. While the sensation is sometimes different depending on the person, the theme is always the same: emotional connection. Adventure, escape, exhilaration, relaxation, fun, to name a few. The outdoors has been a relief from our current dayto-day struggles. We seek it out, forget about it, and find that “loving feeling” all over again when we get out. People are willing to pay a lot of money in search for those emotional feelings. They hire guides in hopes and anticipation of having the best possible experience. Often they get what they were looking for, sometimes not, and other times they have what we call a “JeanClaude” moment. You know that moment in time when the experience is so amazing, so impactful that it actually changes your life. While it sounds cliché, I know a lot of you reading this have experienced this before. To many of you, this is common sense. You already know this and work hard to make the best possible trip for those that are with you. What we have found throughout all our customer research is that the non-anglers, noncampers, non-paddlers and non-hikers among us are less interested in achieving specific milestones such as the largest fish, the hardest trail, the toughest paddle or the most remote camping location. They’re interested in just getting a feel for the outdoors, getting a taste of the amazing sensations that they can achieve. This is what keeps them coming back and trying it again and again. So unleash the outdoors to all those who don’t know better. Now that you know our vision, share this with those you know that are looking to get outdoors in an easy, low-risk maner. Bring the fun, create the love and grow the community. Tom Mulliez is the founder of iTrekkers.com. Their mission is to “Unleash the Outdoors” to aspiring explorers everywhere. Reserve some of the best guides in Florida for your next adventure, backed by a 100-percent money-back satisfaction guarantee.

Tampa Bay

A

s the water temperatures start cooling down the snook fishing should improve in Tampa Bay. We’ve maintained decent snook action all summer, and November should be no different. Although I’m not seeing as many big fish as I did earlier in the year, there are plenty of fish to catch and release. Anglers have been catching nice fish with most averaging in the 22-27 inch range with a few pushing the slot. Artificial lures are a blast and live baits free-lined or under a cork always seem to do the trick as well.

By: Capt. Woody Gore

The redfish were booming in late August and September, this month should also be good with many pushing the upper slot and a few in the 30 to 35 inch range. When redfish hesitate to take live greenbacks or pinfish, try tossing out a piece of cut bait like mullet or ladyfish. If redfish are in the area they’ll find it. I like to suspend cut baits under a cork to let the scent travel with the current. They also like artificial lures like gold spoons and scented plastic baits. The trout bite will continue into winter, so be prepared for some

good October action. Drift any broken bottom grass flat and free line live baits or use a popping cork. Another good option is to use artificial lures as they can be very productive. Large schools of mackerel, bluefish, yellowtail jacks and ladyfish are still around the bay chasing what’s left of the bait. As you travel watch for diving birds to find feeding fish. Set up a drift near the activity and get ready for some fast and furious drag screaming action. I use 60 pound Seaguar leader and long shank Daiichi 2/0 hooks. Be prepared for the occasional cobia or shark to pop up, and always have an extra rod rigged and ready to toss a pinfish to a passing cobia. Mangrove snappers are all over the bay and aren’t bashful about eating small greenbacks or shrimp.

· · · · · · · · · · · ·

You must be quick or they’ll clean your hook before you know it. If you feel the bump and do not hook up, reel in because your bait’s gone. “Give Me a Call & Let’s Go Fishing” – 813-477-3814 Captain Woody Gore is the areas top outdoor fishing guide. Vote to Fish

Y

ou wake up early on Saturday morning, head to the tackle shop, get a dozen shrimp and a pack of hooks, drop the boat in at the ramp, head to your favorite spot and cast a line. As you sit back and say to yourself it doesn’t get any better than this, I wonder if you realize all the politics, votes, meetings, and lobbying that went into making your situation possible. Here we are in November, on the eve of a historical election season

and we’ve got some important decisions to make as voters. But I want to remind all of you that our sport of fishing is not immune to the pollsters. Last month I attended the American Sportfishing Association summit in New Orleans where I sat in on different committees to talk about various issues. The ASA is the official trade organization for the recreational sportfishing industry. Twice a year they get together to talk about the laws affecting fishing, along with strategies and programs to create advocacy in congresses and local governments to maintain the access that we take for granted on the water. Everything we do as fisherman can be traced back to a vote. From regulations on commercial shrimping for bait, to boat ramp parking fees, to no motor or manatee

zones. From local government leaders, all the way to Capitol Hill, the fishing industry like many others needs to be lobbied for and supported by voters and advocates in political leadership positions. One of the biggest things I noticed while I sat in on the government affairs committee is that every two to four years we as an industry have to either maintain or renew a friendship with lawmakers, whether local or federal. After all, they create laws affecting sportfishing. Every election brings new faces into offices that oversee or can directly affect our sport with one vote. The ASA, along with other fishing advocacy groups have to maintain those relationships with lawmakers to ensure favorable decisions. We as fisherman can do our

inally we are into November; this brings cooler air temperatures and cooler water. Along with these weather changes come the best fishing of the year. From offshore to inshore, all the species are on the move and

ready to eat. Gag grouper are being caught all over my region in 10 to 60 feet of water. The stone crab traps are out, which creates thousands of chum blocks on the Gulf ’s bottom. Bottom dropping with live or

frozen baits or trolling in these areas can be very productive. Gag grouper regulations are; 2 per person, 24 inch total length, and the season closes on Dec 31st. The red grouper season is open and the regulations are; 2 per person with a 20 inch total length. When anchored and bottom fishing, put out a free lined bait as per the kingfish are starting to show up. There are also still some cobias around, so keep an eye out for them and have a rig ready to quickly pitch and bait. Grunts, sea bass, snappers and hogfish can also be caught in these deeper spots. The inshore bite is really taking off. Look for the redfish just before or after the high tide. They can be found around shallow structure like oyster beds, grass flats and mangrove shorelines. Use cut baits or shrimp under a bobber. Snook can also be found in the same areas as the redfish. With the cooler water, the trout are also moving into the shallows. I like to target them with a quarter

ounce jighead with either a Gulp! shrimp or a soft plastic jerk bait. Remember, if one thing doesn’t work, try something completely different. On a recent trip we weren’t catching any fish on a flat we were working and so we went and trolled for grouper instead. We ended up bringing home dinner on that trip! I’m always looking for reports and pictures. You can email me or stop by my website and become a “FISHHEAD”. Get out there on the water and make some memories with friends and family! Capt. s discussed in previous articles, one has to be engaged on several different levels to have a full understanding of how our water access rights may be impacted by upcoming legislation, regulatory initiatives, or other factors. There is currently an effort underway to close barrier and spoils islands to human use throughout Florida under the name of Critical Wildlife Areas (CWAs). We discussed this in the last issue, but some new information has come forward that I believe is relevant. During a conference call with regulatory staff and marine industry interests last month, I learned that there are several areas around Florida that are currently designated as CWA’s. However, these areas aren’t marked or enforced. One of the arguments in favor of naming more areas as CWA’s is that, people don’t have problems with current designations. If an area is supposed to be closed year-round, but is neither marked nor enforced, it’s only common sense that people will not have a problem with it. Call it a hunch, but if all of a sudden Sand Dollar Island (south side of Capri Pass on Marco Island) is closed to the public, there will be a massive outcry. This is a favorite area for boaters and beach-combers alike, and is currently inventoried as a CWA. The closure called for is year-round even though birds use the island for only part of the year.

You can see all of the areas currently designated at: http://myfwc.com/conservation/terrestrial/cwa/ My challenge to FWC staff was to hold off naming any new areas until current zones are marked and enforced. If Sand Dollar Island is important enough to close to fishing, boating, camping, shelling and picnicking year round, but hasn’t been enforced, is FWC negligent? Is this zone really needed? This issue will be coming up at the next FWC meeting, and I will be in attendance. Honest questions have been asked of staff and I will do my best to see that those questions are addressed. In other news, there is an anchoring survey that is being done by FWC to get public input on what/ if the state should do to regulate anchoring throughout the state. I talk often about being a pro-active participant when the opportunity arises, here is a golden opportunity. Go to myfwc.com and click on “boating”. The dropdown menu will have a button called “anchoring and mooring”. This will give you the option to tap a link to the survey in the body of the article on the right hand of the page. Where the opportunity comes up, please identify Standing Watch as your source for hearing about the survey. You will have to click “other”, and type in our name – but it will help our long-term efforts if we are mentioned as your

source. These types of public input opportunities are easy and will help steer regulatory and access efforts for years to come. Going into next season and this next legislative session, we need your support as a member, which gives us the financial ability to attend this never-ending stream of regulatory and legislative meetings, hearings, and workshops. We don’t have the luxury of grants and other such things, we rely on you the boating public to defray our travel and expenses. Please go to standingwatch.net and become a member at whatever level you are comfortable. We have board members in each part of the state and we will be happy to arrange a speaker at your next boating function if you desire. We work to balance science with public access for law abiding citizens throughout Florida. We also strive for regulatory accountability and networking with our legislators. You are our eyes and ears in the field, and we are your representation in Tallahassee. Together, we can do great things! Standing Watch is Florida’s largest State-wide grass-roots boating organization. See how you can become a part of their proactive effort by visiting standingwatch.net. Or call 239-821-4245.

November is one of our Fishiest Months! By: Capt. Mike Anderson

F

ishing on the West Coast of Florida is almost always good, but certain months offer better fishing than others. In my opinion, November is one of those special months. The nearshore kingfish bite is usually red hot with lots of schoolie sized kings and big smokers to be had

Sales Location:

with big Spanish mackerel and even bonitas mixed in. Both slow trolling and anchoring up and chumming can be productive for macks and tunas. Fish areas of hard bottom or structure that are holding bait for best results. Inshore, schools of redfish will

still be around and aggressive with cooling water temps. Artificial baits work very well this month, so try top waters in the morning low light conditions and switch to jigs as the sun comes up. The grass flats will be alive as well with lots of speckled tout, ladyfish and jacks to be had both on live bait and plastics. November is a great month to introduce kids to artificial baits since once you find feeding fish there is a good chance you’ll find a lot of them. November is also an incredible month to target big snook. The snook will be piling into the rivers, backcountry creeks and residential canals, and be feeding like crazy trying to fatten up for winter. Again, both artificial and live baits will get it done, but few things are more rewarding than fooling one of God’s creatures into eating a piece of plastic. The MirrOlure C-Eye pro Dog Jr topwater plug is my go to lure for big snook around the docks and mangrove shorelines. The lure’s

high frequency rattle seems to call them into action. The MirrOlure MirrOdine is also a very versatile hard plastic lure that will catch not only big snook but trout, redfish, flounder and just about anything else that swims. If you’re fishing with kids, try the MirrOlure Lil John and Marsh Minnow soft plastics. Both baits are very easy to use and can help build kids confidence in artificial baits. Whether you’re a live bait or artificial fisherman November offers some great off shore and inshore fishing for anglers of all ages and skill sets. The weather is beautiful so what are you waiting for? Go fishing! Catch Capt. Michael Anderson every Saturday for the “Reel Animals Fishing Show” on 970WFLA from 6:00a.m. to 8:00a.m., and Sunday mornings on AM620 for the “TA Mahoney Co. RECIPE OF THE MONTH:

By: Bruce Butler

STONE CRAB & SEAFOOD SAUCE

T

he Banana curse and me, folks. Having grown up in rural Indiana (and I do mean rural), we still had an operator and party lines!, And, also being of Cherokee and Irish descent, many superstitions were drilled into me with mother’s milk. But, now that I’m older and more sophisticated (more or less), I find I still won’t walk under a ladder. I knock on wood to ward off bad luck and face a black cat across my path with a certain trepidation. I’m not real big on horseshoes or four leaf clovers, and I don’t actually hold my breath when driving past a cemetery; but, as to the banana curse, I believe! The first incident was while filming my very first TV show with my friend Glen Pla, “The Average Angler”. We had a horrible day, and I said goodbye. I saw a banana peel on his front seat. “Glen”, I said, “what’s that?” “Don’t go there he replied.” My response was “I don’t have to. You did a show on it that was less than well received.” And, therein lies the beginning of my fear. After that I thought I’d never see him again, but we went on to become friends and shoot several shows together later--much to my surprise. I even bought him a banana cream pie for his birthday. LOL That was the first of my experiences with the “Yellow Peril” and fishing. The latest was on my last charter with Jim from Colorado. I told him I wouldn’t use his name, but I lied. I only change names to protect the innocent! LOL I admit to a partial blame when I tell people what to bring. I always mention a hat, sunglasses, water, sunscreen, etc., and jokingly (but in dead earnest) not to bring a banana along. He went out to eat and my normal spiel was cut short. By the gods of fishing, this will never happen again! And, so the story begins. Jim (did I mention his name was Jim?)

you know, from Colorado. I mean, how many of them can there be? Anyway, we put in at Indian Bay in Aripeka and paddled North. I placed him on spot after spot, with both bait and lures and nothing! Now I’m not saying that the bite was hot, but I caught nice mangrove snapper, redfish and trout and he couldn’t catch a cold. I’m dumbfounded! Finally, at the lower end of the tide, we’re sitting inside of Indian key with bait and mullet schools everywhere around a quarter-mile radius. I mean that Bay was lit up. He reached into his backpack and pulled it out! I crossed myself and screamed “what’s that?” “Oh, my dad gave me this as I was leaving. I didn’t think they could affect kayaks!” Yes, dear reader, that was the cardinal sin. He (Jim from Colorado) knew of the curse, and set his fate. But, it gets worse... “Let me get rid of it,” he said, as he ate it and threw the peel to the tides. “There, it’s gone!” We both turned our heads back to the Bay (you know that Bay that was alive with fish) and there was nothing... nada, zilch. Every fish in a half-mile radius was gone. We looked at each other and he said, “where did everything go?” I replied, “only one thing changed”, as I’m looking at that yellow peel floating away! Oh, I’m not saying the banana was the cause—maybe, 5000 fish just decided to leave at the same time . Maybe, it was recess and they had to get back to school. LOL. Oh, and Jim (remember Jim?) I couldn’t put him on anything. I doubt he will ever bring a banana with him again! PS: he still had a great time. So, humming that old Monkee’s tune “I’m a Believer” as I sign off, may you have tight lines and no bananas. Stone crab / Seafood sauce:

S

tone crab season is upon us. This is my favorite food, and I love the Fall season as well. There are many ways to serve this delicious delicacy, but the one I use is a favorite among those who eat them cold and freshly cracked. Let me say, I purchase mine not cracked until we are ready to eat them. I, also, do not purchase them frozen, because the meat will stick to the shell. This can be a messy meal or treat; but, to me and my family it is well worth the mess. We put down newspaper and get the roll of paper towel to put on the table. So, I will give you the recipe that we use on the crabs and many other foods. I’d like to hear what you think of it.

• Large bowl for mixing. • You can do this by hand or use a blender. • 1 tbsp plus ½ teaspoon of dried Coleman’s mustard powder. It this is not available, any mustard powder will do. • 1 cup of good mayonnaise • 2 tsp. of Worcestershire sauce • 2 tbsp. of heavy cream (this can also be optional if you want a thinner sauce) • 2 tbsp. (milk if not using cream, use 4 tbsp.) • Pinch of salt • Mix all ingredients together until creamy. If you like the mustard powder and the tangy flavor, you can add a pinch more - - just taste before doing so. This recipe is not written in stone, so feel free to experiment. Tampa Bay Bait & Tackle: North Tampa Bay By: Capt. Joe Vinson

B

ig dips in the Jet Stream are dropping some dry and cool air into our North Tampa Bay waters. This cooler, northerly trend is the spark to the true Fall in our area, which has all of our local favorites fattening up before winter. Speckled sea trout are moving back in to North Tampa Bay right on schedule. You can find these trout all over the grass flats on high tides and inside the creeks, passes, and channels around the low tides. You can be sure to catch your limit of these speckled beauties using live bait or artificials. The best live baits to try are shrimp, finger mullet, or creek chubs under a cork

or on a knocker rig. Anglers who prefer artificials, can choose from a wide variety of soft baits, crank baits, and top waters. Try different colors, shapes, jigs, and sizes to find out what is the most productive, but remember to combine with your favorite pro cure bait scents for a deadly combination. Redfish are schooling together to hunt the area flats. The Fall tide changes, combined with heavy north winds, can be more drastic -- which means the flats are sometimes only flooded for a few hours. These reds will move in fast to new flooded territory looking for a fill. Anglers that have a light poling skiff or kayak can slowly approach these flats armed with live or chunked greenbacks or pinfish. Anglers who are quiet enough to sneak up on these rummaging redfish can entice a bite with a soft plastic shrimp, paddle tail swim bait, or an Aqua Dream weedless spoon (try the pinfish pattern). These redfish will move back into

the creeks and channels at low tide. The lower and longer low tides will push these fish deeper and deeper into backwater. Snook bite is really getting hot. These fish are making it back to their Winter haunts and boy, are they hungry. You can target these linesiders near mangrove banks, passes, points, and creek/channel mouths that have good tidal flow. Snook will eat anything from a chunk of ladyfish soaked near the mangrove banks to walking the dog with a top water plug on the surface. Anglers should watch the tide charts and target these fish around the tide changes when the bait gets flushed in and out of the channels. The cooler Fall months will also produce some awesome nighttime snook action inside creeks and channels around dock lights and shadow/light lines Other hot bites include flounder who are fattening up and feeding strong all over North Tampa Bay. Flounder love creek

chubs or small finger mullet soaked on the bottom with a knocker rig. To put flounder in the box, target sandy areas of the grass flats, oyster bars, and structure near the area bridges. Flounder are notorious for shaking off the hook at boat side, so if you feel dead weight with a little bit of fight or head shake, get the net ready. Bonnet head sharks, lady fish, and jacks are still showing up around the upper bay and are great fun to chase down and bend a rod, especially if you have kids onboard. November is a great time to fish our area. If you are doing any fishing in North Tampa Bay, make sure you stop by Tampa Bay Bait & Tackle on Hillsborough Ave. The gang at TBBT will get you set up with the right bait and tackle for a productive day on the water. Lake Alfred, Auburndale, Winter Haven Areas

S

pec fishing is on! The abundant rains in our area have created very high water levels and with it brought excellent spec fishing. We are seeing good size specs (one to one and a half pound range), responding best to live minnows and jigs tipped with minnows. Large shell crackers are also reported to be mixed in with the specs. Currently, our best reports are coming from Lakes Haines and

Rochelle in Lake Alfred and Lakes Howard and Shipp in the South Winter Haven Chain. Both the North and South Winter Haven Chains are showing signs of bass beginning to stage. Bass are moving in and out of the banks, so fish along the shore not towards the shore. We are still recommending Bass Assassin “Boss Shiners” in assorted colors or “Pure Craws” in light colors. Both baits can be flipped with

a jighead or put on a swim bait hook. Regardless, our all time best proven recommendation is still a Booyah lipless crank bait in royalty color. Congratulations! Winners Sebastian Greico and Clay Harvey were victorious in taking both the $500 biggest bass prize and the $2000 grand prize at the 2nd Annual Bass Assassin/Powerpole Tournament. The weather was perfect and many fish were weighed in. Seventy four boats competed on the South Winter Haven Chain hoping to win. Sebastian and Clay were successful in accomplishing their wins by using Bass Assassin “pure craws” in the June bug/blue belly color. Enjoy the photos! There’s still time to participate in Ron’s Tackle Box Weekly Bass Tournaments before our 18th

Season wraps up. Each tournament has an entry fee of $30.00 per boat for a one or two man team. The tournament runs from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. every Thursday until the end of October 2016. Prizes are awarded for biggest bass as well as 1st, 2nd, 3rd place categories. The location each week is not revealed until Thursday mornings and is announced in Del Milligan’s column in “The Ledger” and on our website. Freediving Gear

I

get several questions from people asking me what the most important piece of free diving gear is. Some pieces of gear are more important than others, but I find that the most important piece of gear for me is my free diving computer. It has several features that I love; depth alarms, surface interval alarms and dive time alarms. These tools become very useful to help avoid the deadly shallow water blackout. These alarms can be set to an individual’s skill level, for example once you learn your CO2 level you can set the surface interval alarm to allow yourself to safely dive again. You could also set the bottom time alarm to let you know if you are exceeding your safe zone and need to return to the surface For me, these tools are very helpful for

helping me to stay safe and maintain a good pace. It helps me relax so that I can enjoy the sport and not worry about an avoidable danger. There are several of these computers on the market. My favorite is the Oceanic v3 f-10 I feel it’s the best value. It’s packed with all the features mentioned above and plenty more. You can check out this model at neptonicsystems.com, or stop by their Tampa store. Bimini Enchantment, Bimini, Bahamas

W

hat do Hemingway, Buffet, and Martin Luther King all have in common? Their love for the Island of Bimini in the Bahamas--just a quick 50 mile trip from the East Coast of Florida. What is it about Bimini that enchants icons like Hemingway to make Bimini his summer home; inspires Jimmy Buffet to write his first book “Tales of Margaretville”; and creates a special place of serenity for Martin Luther King to enjoy, write and spend some of his last days? Bimini may be a smaller island, but there is no shortage of “Once in a Lifetime” experiences and adventures to be had. Bimini consists of two main islands-North Bimini and South Bimini Island--and many smaller cays. Bimini boasts a rich, racy past and an exciting and growing future. During prohibition, Bimini was a convenient speakeasy and liquor store and, also, became home to some of the most notorious Rumrunners in the business. The good news is the Bahama Mama’s are flowing freely and the Sands Beer is waiting for you ice cold at Sherry’s Paradise Beach Bar. If you haven’t been to Bimini you might ask “Well, what is there to do?” and “Is Bimini really that exciting?” I can tell you this, just planning to be there a few days is not enough time to do it all. I never thought I would say this, but I am excited that “Hammerhead Season” is here. Yes, you heard me right, and no I am not crazy. Bimini is one of the few places in the World where you can do a few unique things and one of them is swim with 13 foot Hammerhead sharks and come back with all

your fingers and toes. When the winter months approach the Bahamas, the water temperatures start to cool down a few degrees and the Hammerhead sharks start to appear. After you are done swimming with these handsome devils, you should take a trip over to Triangle Rock and check out the Caribbean Reef and Blacknose sharks. If just checking out these creatures from land is more your style, be sure to visit the Sharklab founded by marine biologist Dr. Samuel Gruber, one the of world’s leading shark studying stations. Now if all the shark talk is a bit too racy for you, take a trip cruising around the crystal blue waters looking for pods of spotted dolphins. This is one of the most spiritual experiences you can ever have with one of the most majestic creatures on earth-swimming with wild Dolphins. I am not knocking the theme parks where you can schedule an appointment with a trained Dolphin, but swimming with a pod of wild Dolphins and them choosing to spend time with you is life changing. Take a snorkel trip to the Sapona, a concrete vessel that was built by Henry Ford in 1911, and now rests in just 17 feet of water after being run aground by a Hurricane in 1926. If all this talk is making you feel a bit waterlogged, no worries. There is plenty to do on land; walk along Bimini’s Nature Trail, or take a trip to the Healing Hole (a natural fresh-water spring inside a salt water swamp at Bonefish Creek). Speaking of Bonefish, did I mention that Bimini is known as the Big Game Fishing Capital of

By: Misty Wells

the World? You can target so many species; Wahoo, Mahi, Sailfish, Marlin, the elusive Bonefish and more. Bimini Undersea is my favorite adventure company for all the above, and they have 2 locations. Resort World & newly added Bimini Sands will pick you up by boat right from the Resort. All this talk about adventure is probably making you hungry, not a problem. There are some great places that offer some amazing foodie adventures. Conch is a big deal on Bimini, so getting a fresh Conch Salad is “a must” and my personal favorite is Stuart’s Conch Shack. They crack the conch right there, grab a handful of fresh ingredients and get to work making the freshest conch salad you will ever eat. Charlies Bimini Bread is the best, but you better get there early because they bake it fresh every day and sell out every day. If you are in the mood for some fresh fish, lobster or conch, no problem. You can either go out and harvest it yourself, (I do have a few secret spots for my

lobsters) or, dine at one of the famous places located around the Island. A Taste of Heaven bakery, CJ’s Deli, Edith’s Pizza are some local favorites, but you can take it a bit more upscale at one of the many new restaurants at Resorts World. As I sit here on the beach at Bimini Sands Resort & Marina, my advice to you is “put your toes in the sand, a cold beer in your hand and sit back, relax and get enchanted with Bimini.” Misty Wells is Founder of “A Reel Future” a non-profit organization devoted to sharing knowledge and giving the passion of the fishing and the great outdoors to our future generation and foster kids in need. Negative Low Tides

N

ovember means one thing to me as a fishing guide: negative low tides. Seeing that little minus symbol on the tide charts when the lows happen just after sunrise and just before sunset is like finding presents under the tree on Christmas morning. These are some of the best conditions to chase tailing redfish, for die hard skinny water anglers this is as good as it gets. My favorite times to hit these ultra-shallow flats are about an hour before the bottom of the tide and then the first two hours of the rising water. This is when I usually find the redfish feeding most aggressively because their prey, which is mostly crabs and shrimp, is easily pinned to the bottom. This is also when you’ll find reds sticking their tails straight up into the air and waving them like signal flags. It’s easily one of the coolest things you’ll ever see out on the flats. One other thing to look for out there is cruising stingrays. The bigger rays attract fish like a magnet on certain flats in Pine Island Sound. I’ve seen more than a dozen reds hanging on their backs waiting for a crab to flush from underneath. This is also a common behavior for other species of gamefish so it’s not a bad idea to toss a lure or fly at any passing ray. Some of the biggest trout and jacks I’ve ever seen have been landed this way. The rays are easy creatures to spot on negative tides, just look for the large pushes of water or even

their wingtips poking above the surface. The best way to target low tide reds on fly is basically to bonk them right on the head with light spoon patterns. That tactic won’t work if you’re throwing heavier artificials with spinning gear. One lure I’ve had great success with that doesn’t spook them as easily are Gulp! jerk shads rigged on weedless swimbait hooks. These can be dropped right in a school of feeding reds and usually gets pounded immediately. With 10 pound braid you can throw these light Gulps! very accurately over surprisingly long distances. And Gulps! really are the only artificial that actually does work better than live bait (most of the time). The final thing to know about working schools of fish on a falling tide is to approach them with caution. This isn’t just to avoid spooking them. The water during a negative low can disappear quickly and for a long time, (especially on a windy day after a cold front). It’s very easy to get shoved up onto a flat or pole your way into an area while you’re chasing tailers and suddenly have no way back out, even in a very light skiff. This would be a really miserable experience if it happened at sunset and close to the mangroves where the bugs live. Keep in mind that the numbers you see on a tide chart are predictions and nothing more than that. While usually quite accurate, the depths and times of posted tides can vary significantly, especially when strong weather happens. Keep that in mind when you’re fishing around negative lows and you’ll keep yourself out of trouble.

ovember brings even more cool air, which brings even a hotter bite. This month is by far one of my favorite months. There is so much going on that it is hard to figure out what to fish for. However, your best bet is going to be speckled trout. This time of year our region gets flooded by large numbers of trout some of which are monsters! There are a couple of things that you can do to increase your odds with catching some trophy gator trout. The first area you want to look at is the spoil islands north of Dunedin. You will want to anchor up on the deep sides of the spoil island so that you can drift your baits back towards the island. There are many different baits that you can use, I like to use shrimp or scaled sardines (white bait) on a 2/0 hook with approximate 18 to 24 inches of 20 pound Yo-Zuri Top Knot leader. I use this tackle on a seven and a half foot med- light rod with a 2500 spinning reel. I spool my reels with 10 pound Yo-Zuri braid. Aside from sardines and shrimp, you can also throw artificials around the spoil islands. One deadly combo is an Exude shrimp under a popping cork. You will want to make several casts paying attention to your retrieval so you can dial in what

speed is producing for you. I like to use a steady pop, then pause for a second or two, and a pop again. Another area that will produce gator trout is the shallow flats around Anclote Island and the spoil island just outside of the Anclote River. You will want to fish last of the incoming tide around this area. The biggest gator trout will be up shallow because the water is a lot warmer there. To catch these fish you will want to be as stealthy as possible, remember to make super long casts here. I like to throw topwaters first thing in the morning with a moderate retrieval. Once you get a bite, work that same area hard as these trout tend to be bunched up together. If you are using live bait, once you have located the trout take one or two net fulls of white bait and chum with them. This will get them fired up, don’t be shocked if you hook up into a nice red fish or even a snook! November also brings a killer bite offshore. This time of year you can expect to catch many species of fish. Kingfish, grouper, cobia and Spanish mackerel have all moved because of the cooler water and the large amount of bait. You can pretty much anchor on any local wreck or ledge and expect your share of these fish. Take these methods to the water and they will produce some trophy fish for you. Tight lines and good luck! Getting Ready for the Change

N

ovember brings changes in weather, tides and water temperature; getting ready for those changes will increase your chances of catching fish. The first cold fronts will start soon and will bring clearer waters and lower tides. The smart angler will take this into consideration and change his method of fishing; for example, using lighter tackle for flats fishing around the mangroves and oyster beds. Artificial baits are great for working the edges of channels and dredge holes this time of year, and

quarter to three eighths ounce jigheads tipped with live shrimp are killer for flounder and gator trout. The negative tides will force the fish to find deeper water. Anywhere you can find a depression you will find fish. Use your local chart to help you find the depressions and holes. A good example of this is the 4th street exit off the Howard Frankland. It has plenty of holes from the days when they were dredging to construct the bridge, so the colder the weather the more fish you will find in these holes as the tide drops.

Shore anglers have an advantage being able to walk along the shoreline and casting along the edges of holes working their bait or lures from one side to the other. Snook, redfish and trout will work their way into the rivers in search of warmer water. Look for rocky bottoms or shorelines with structure as they tend to hold heat longer. Work your bait slowly and close to the rocks or seawall for the best action. Sheepshead will start their annual spawning migration into the bay anywhere between late November and early December depending on the cold fronts. These bait stealers are fun to catch and make very tasteful table fare. There are over 20 shipwrecks in Tampa Bay, and if you can find some of them they will be holding some nice grouper, grunts, seabass and big snook. Over the years I have been able to put some of my clients on big grouper and snook fishing the wrecks and ledges inside Tampa Bay. My baits of choice are live

shrimp, fiddler crabs, small blue crabs and fresh cut Spanish sardines. I tend to switch my fluorocarbon leader from 30 to 20 pound and even in some cases drop to a #1 circle hook, except when fishing for trout I will always use a 2/0 circle hook. For sheepshead I even get down to a #2 circle hook to increase my catch.

South Shore Tampa Bay November to Remember By: Capt. Joel Brandenburg

L

ast November we stopped at an oyster bar at the mouth of an estuary out flow canal on the south shore of Tampa Bay. We’d been catching reds at this oyster bar in September and October. We Power Pole’d down 20 yards from the bar with the wind at our back. Big fish started blowing up on our chummers right away. One by one the baits were casted a foot off the bar and one by one the baits were nailed. To my surprise, my clients started reeling in trophy trout (25-30 inches) left and right. For two months we had only caught reds off this bar, this was a wild phenomenon. They were at that bar on that tide almost every day we fished in November. We won the trout division of both grand slam tournaments we entered in November. Strangely, by December they were all gone. We noticed that all the trout over 20 inches were full of eggs. We’ve also found that as the tide rolled out lower and lower we stopped catching the monster females and were catching smaller 15 inch buck trout. We’re not sure why those

big females were at that oyster bar all November, but we think big spawning trout lay their eggs in and around oyster bars with heavy flows in November. The then bucks come in right behind them to fertilize the eggs in the oysters. We think the fat lethargic females are hungry because they have not fed and so will suck down bait if an easy opportunity arises. Where the gator trout go on the other tides in November is still a mystery to me, but I think they scatter on the open grass flats and all meet back up at certain spawning spots during a high outgoing tide. Unlike snook and reds that spawn once a year, marine biologists say that trout spawn several times a year. We can verify that because we have found eggs in trout stomachs during all 12 months of the year, but November is the only month that we consistently catch giant pregnant gator trout. Trout season has been opened all year round for the last couple years. Prior to that trout season was only open a few months of the year. We’re anxious to see if the gator trout will be at the same bar in November this year or if the year round season has them in decline. November offers much more than great trout fishing. Look for Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, shark, snook, redfish, flounder, tarpon, snapper, sheepshead, black drum, cobia, triple tail, bonita, bluefish and monster jacks. Soft Plastic Artificial Lures By: Woody Gore

W

hen temperatures drop too quickly fish often become uncomfortable as they’re adjusting to the new changes. You find this scenario in shallow water places like Tampa Bay, because the waters seem to cool off quickly, which makes the reds, snook and trout lethargic. Sudden drops in water temperatures can also suspend feeding patterns and put fish on the move for more tolerable temperatures. On my last trip, we started out using live shrimp on the bottom and caught a few small redfish, and as the tide turned we began catching a few medium size trout, but nothing to brag about. However, what we did catch was plenty of pinfish, lizard fish and grunts. It was approaching noon and I’d had all the pinfish I could stand, so I suggested we switch over to artificial lures. The guys seemed hesitant at first, but I assured them if they fished them correctly they would catch fish. We still had good moving water, so we fished the points and creek mouths located throughout the bay. We caught fish on live bait, but

we caught more on Gulp! Unlike live shrimp where we could only catch one fish per shrimp, we were able to catch several fish per soft plastic before having to change our lures. The soft plastics also enabled us to cover more ground so we could keep our bait in the strike zone longer. Some anglers don’t believe artificial lures work, especially when the water gets cold. However, it has been my experience they do. I’ve spent many winter days tossing artificials, which confirms that plastics, especially scented plastics do work. Using artificials is not as simple as dropping it over the side of the boat, you must fish them differently. Repeatedly target likely ambush and holding points, which include depressions or sandy pot holes located on shallow broken bottom grass flats. Keep in mind the flow of current and try to work the lure in the same direction. It often takes more than one cast to spark the interest of a fish, remember the water temperature has them lethargic. The most difficult thing for me to do when using an artificial is to slow it down, but when I do, I get more strikes. My old friend Merrill “Canoeman” Chandler used to say, “If you think you’re working it slow enough, slow it down”. I believe that live and natural baits will always be a part of fishing, but on the other hand I also know that the new generation of artificial lures being introduced yearly will catch fish in almost any water temperature. Clearwater & Dunedin By: Capt. Gary Burch

N

ovember’s temperatures will be up and down all month; it’s very typical for this time of year. Cold fronts will come through and cool things down and then the sun will come out and warm everything back up. The key is to fish the warm up when fish are more active. There are plenty of warm days and some great fishing in the Clearwater and Dunedin areas this month. Redfish, 20+ inch trout, mackerel, flounder and a few pompano are just a few of what’s on tap for November. Lots of other species like kingfish, ladyfish and small sharks appear as well. As long as the weather stays relatively stable for the entire month, look for a steady bite throughout the bays and flats. Start your search for gator trout along the numerous grass flats of St. Joseph’s Sound. The fish will be laying in the three to four foot depths mostly around grass and sand type bottoms. Use white bait if you can find it, otherwise use live shrimp. There are lots of artificials that catch big trout as well. One such jig I used last year to catch several gator trout over 24

inches was the “Mr. Twister” in root beer color. Redfish will be found on many of the flats of both Clearwater and Dunedin bays. These fish may be found one day and not the next. When you find fish, use a stealth approach because the less commotion you make, the better chance these fish will hang around longer. White bait, cut bait, shrimp and Gulp artificials all work well when targeting redfish. Another cooperative species this month is mackerel. Set up on the outside of the passes, weather permitting, and start chumming. It won’t be long until the macks show up. These speedy fish add lots of drag screaming action to any fishing trip. I use a long shank 1/0 hook to help prevent cut offs. If there’s a strong cold front that hits the area and drops the water temps 10 to 15 degrees, the fish will disappear for a few days. If this happens, give it a day or two and our Florida sunshine will warm it back up and bring out the fish again. Hope for a nice cool down during November, we all like cool weather for turkey day. Skinny Water Report

O

ctober is gone but not forgotten. The start of the fall season came early with a wonderful snook. Florida has seen a spike in the snook population in the last few years, but this season has been one of the best. Expect the bite to continue through the month with many sizable fish caught. This is a great time to fish the inshore flats and creek mouths. Topwater lures such as the Dawgslider by Unfair Lures will work best on the outgoing tides. For fly fisherman looking for an action-packed bite, try tossing a gurgler along the mangroves and

hold on! Shrimp patterns like the Simple Micro Shrimp can also be used for those lazy, laid-up fish. If it’s live bait you’re into, nothing beats a nice greenback under a cork! The redfish made a showing, disappeared and have now made a return and are eating everything in sight! The trick in catching these guys is finding them; I have been spotting them in and near jack crevalle and ladyfish schools feeding off their scraps. These are super lazy fish looking for an easy meal. Small pods of fish will break away and feed on their own and in

By: Derick Burgos

those cases, a soft and subtle presentation is key. If you are using artificials try to make them land as quietly as possible and work them slowly. This is where finesse comes in to play, nothing can beat a fly. Once again gurglers will get action packed strikes (if you can get them to come up top), but patterns like the Backwater Special or the Kwan Shrimp can’t be beat. To target redfish with live bait, shrimp under a cork or creek chubs reign supreme. Trout are another viable option. The best technique to locating them is to drift a flat while casting either a soft plastic like a four inch DOA shad or an Unfair Lures Shrimp over grass flats and pot holes. Once you get a strike stake out and fan cast those areas, when the bite slows down simply repeat the cycle. One of my favorite fly patterns for this is the “Hi Tie” Clouser. It is a simple yet very effective fly for

sight casting or search casting for speckled trout on the flats. Flounder, cobia, triple tail and black drum still roam the area, even schools of pompano and permit have been seen tailing in the grass. Expect all of this activity and more to continue as the winds subside throughout May and into June. This is the best time to catch multiple species of fish on your bucket list. We still have some trips open, but book now before they fill up. As always, tight lines and clear minds! Derick Burgos is a kayak fishing guide and owner of Phatfish Kayak Charters in Tampa Bay. he mackerel have been biting well around the Coffee Pot flats. We have been using cut threadfins and live shrimp with a cork on a 3/0 hook and a 30 pound fluorocarbon leader. We have also been using live pinfish in the four to five inch range, a heavier rod with a big cork and a 4/0 hook for cobia. A lot of

the cobias have been seen coming onto the flats in the mid-morning hours. The cobia that we have been catching have been anywhere from 30 pounds up to 60 pound slobs. If you’re into catching sharks, there are lots of them biting on cut threadfins. For kids they’re a blast, especially on light tackle. As the water temperatures are

starting to drop a little bit we start fishing some of the docks around Coffee Pot and Snell Isle. They are producing black drum, redfish, sheepshead and snapper. The preferred setup for this is a 2/0 hook with a 15 pound fluorocarbon leader and a small split shot. I have been getting my hand picked shrimp and fiddler crabs

from Mitch’s Bait and Tackle, he seems to have shrimp all the time! Fishing the Skyway area for mangrove snapper in the evening has produced great results. For best results, find yourself a rock pile and drop down a shrimp on a knocker rig. We like to use a 30 pound fluorocarbon leader and 3/0 hook with a two ounce sinker for this method. FISH & FISHING

PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER MARK SOSIN

S

uccessful fishing necks down to two things. The first challenge focuses on finding the species you are planning to catch, and the second phase centers on getting them to eat a bait or strike an artificial. Everybody may know that, but not all anglers achieve their goals on the water. The key lies in planning your day and working your plan. Did you ever wonder why leading guides almost always find and catch fish every time they are on the water. There’s no mystery or deep, dark secret. They know the area they fish, they understand the preferences of the species they seek, and they plan their day in advance. If you fish the same waters repeatedly, you should have a pretty fair idea of where your quarry should be based on the tide, water temperature, bait concentrations and basic experience. Decide before you leave the dock where you plan to start and the next three or four spots if the first one doesn’t pan out. It’s also important to spend sufficient time in each location to make sure you give it a fair chance to produce results. Regardless if you are new to the area or fish there all the time, there are basic approaches you should constantly remember. If you can learn the depth where fish were caught recently, chances are they will still be lingering at that depth even if you don’t know the precise spot. During new and full moons, if you fish the shallows, the tides will be higher and lower. On incoming water, fish will push up shallower and then drop off the flat during the last of the outgoing tide. If you see sharks cruising a flat, that’s a good indication of the depth you should be looking for

fish. For those who prefer trolling, try a zigzag course working at a 45-degree angle deeper and then shallower until you start getting strikes. On the offshore grounds, look for weedlines, debris, currents, birds, baitfish and anything else out of the ordinary. Troll with the current, against the current, from deep to shallow, and shallow to deep until you hit paydirt. Remember the theory of “seats in a restaurant.” Fish tend to hold in very specific places. Even if you catch one, another will replace it shortly. That means you need to keep going back to exact spots where you caught fish in the past. Too many anglers simply fish at random without studying the area they plan to fish. Even if you’ve never fished those waters before, study the currents, the dropoffs and necks of a funnel where water flows in an out in channels. Finally, if you use natural bait, make sure it is fresh and change it frequently so it constantly gives off maximum odor. Live bait should be frisky. Replace it every 15 or 20 minutes. If you prefer artificials, stick with the basics and with lures that have caught fish in the past. You can try new lures when you find the fish and are having a banner day. The price of success is eternal vigilance on the water. Stay alert, follow a game plan, and you should be smiling at the end of the day. BETTER DECISIONS.

By Christina Weber

I

’m going to share some packing tips that’ll help you prepare to kayak fish in remote locations where you’ll rely on what you brought and someone else’s kayak… where you’ll fish on water you know very little about, in an area so remote that once you’re there, you’re there. If you’re like me, you’ll fish from a Hobie Mirage for roosterfish, a fish with an aggressive attitude and a killer Mohawk. When travelling it can be beneficial to share baggage expenses with a friend. We made our own 8’6’’ rod tube that was wide enough to hold eight rods and two gaffs. I use a large dry bag backpack for all my kayak accessories: extra rod tube extenders, gear ties, PFD, headlamp, pliers, cutters, extra dry bags, sunscreen, my TackleWebs, rain gear and other useful tools. Tackle takes up an entire suitcase with lures, hooks, leader and tackle boxes. It doesn’t sound like much until you lay everything out. Terminal tackle has to be checked baggage. I pack my reels in a Pelican case. I use it as a carry on. It also holds my laptop/POV camera. By the time this guy is packed, there isn’t much space, but it gets the job done. You might think your reels can handle the abuse of travel, but all that rattling and banging has the potential to loosen screws and drags. Plus, I’m not comfortable with the thought of losing thousands of dollars in gear. Occasionally I’ve been forced to check my reels. Prepare for the possibility.

roseate spoonbill paid little attention as we crept along the mangroves less than a mile from where the ocean and river converged. The cool incoming tide pushed against my legs, as a definitive line of blue water slowly flowed into the Indian River lagoon. Casting into the current, my buddy Ed and I slowly retrieved lures over a thick bed of seagrass. “Fish on!” he shouted, as a scrappy blue-and-green striped fish wiggled on the end of his line. It wasn’t the snook he was expecting, or a redfish like the one I’d caught earlier. “Little mutton snapper,” he said, tossing it back. “You never know what you might catch around here.” Moments later, my rod also curved into an arc. “What’ve you got?” Ed asked. “Snook!” I happily replied, catching a glimpse of its dark lateral line as it launched out of the water and into the air. “We’ve got a double then,” he said, as his rod bowed for the second time. Only it wasn’t a snook, redfish or snapper at the end of his line; it was a huge spotted seatrout. Referred to as “gators,” for their large size, it was one of the largest seatrout I’d ever seen. Ed and I stared in awe as the giant fish thrashed and churned saltwater just feet from Ed’s rod tip. I quickly landed my snook then released it, while Ed continued to battle the big fish for several minutes before managing to grab it with both hands. “They don’t get much bigger than this,” he beamed proudly, lifting the massive fish up for a photo. We estimated the seatrout to be more than 30 inches long, and after admiring it for a few moments, Ed gently lowered it back into the water where it swam away. Made For Anglers Home to the current International Game Fish Association (IGFA) world record for the largest spotted seatrout caught (it weighed more than 17 pounds), the diverse crystal blue waters of Fort Pierce, in St. Lucie County, always deliver a spectacular fishing experience each time Ed and I visit. Spotted seatrout grow much larger here than in other parts of the country, a benefit of the region’s warm tropical climate and abundance of prey fish commuting through the Fort Pierce inlet from the Atlantic Ocean. There are also redfish, tarpon and all four types of snook, along with a smorgasbord of other varieties such as lookdown, flounder, bluefish, black drum, jack crevalle, sheepshead, pompano, snapper and grouper to catch, as the lagoon is an estuary for many inshore and pelagic species alike. For more than a hundred years, Fort Pierce in St. Lucie County has been 14 FLORIDA

a fishing town, and each year I’m pleasantly surprised to find that all the local hotels, tackle shops and restaurants still eagerly accommodate anglers like us. There are plenty of fishing piers, boat launches and public parks providing easy access to the water. Kayaking around areas like Little Jim Island and Bear Point, we’re always able to find a fish or two to catch. Seventeen miles (give or take a few miles) off the coast, the warm currents from the nearby Gulfstream provide plenty of bluewater action each winter when the “Sailfish Capital of the World,” just south of St. Lucie County, experiences huge migrations of Atlantic sailfish through its world famous “Sailfish Alley.” All Around Alluring Yesterday, Ed and I found several private inshore and offshore fishing charters in the area that cater to anyone’s budget and schedule. We ended up booking an offshore charter—aboard The Last Mango—and had a blast winching up grouper, snapper and amberjack from the patchwork of reefs and wrecks along the ocean floor. That evening, we recounted fish tales over wine and dinner at Cobb’s Landing overlooking the Fort Pierce City Marina. The open-air, tiki-style restaurant cleaned, prepared and served our very own catch in a variety of delectable entrees. After a short stroll to the Sailfish Brewery for craft beers, it was back to our rooms to rest up for the following day. This morning, Ed and I were eager to get to the lagoon to cast our lines. After putting on my waders, I quietly stepped into the calm serene water just after sunrise. As the ocean slowly drank the river, it reaffirmed to me why wade fishing during a falling tide is the real treasure of the area. Even without a boat or kayak, I can still immerse myself within one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, where dolphins, manatees and birds of every color abound. It’s one of few places where the next cast could be another world record, or result in catching a species I’ve never seen before. And best of all, it’s knowing as soon as the sun illuminates the warm blue water, a few of life’s worries will wash away with the tide. Get hooked on Fort Pierce in St. Lucie!

omething we love to do this time of year before all the hard fronts begin to arrive is visit the Charlotte Harbor area for fast small tarpon action. While most of the attention in this tarpon hotspot on the southern Gulf coast of Florida is given to those big Boca Grande bruisers in the spring and summer, the small guys are a lot of fun. Young tarpon come out to play in October, and the bite can last until December especially in the mouths of the Myakka and Peace Rivers. These rivers meet in the headwaters of the harbor around Port Charlotte. Two freshwater rivers that feed the harbor are where tarpon love to winter. Here the water is more stable and often warmer than the harbor itself. Other fish in big numbers move into these rivers this time of year for the same reason. Snook, redfish and largemouth bass live here and share food with the tarpon. The same conditions exist along the east coast where tarpon move back into residential canals, under bridges and in backcountry bays. We simply idle up these bodies of water and look for tarpon rolling or busting bait. Once we see a few tarpon, we go into stealth mode and study where the most activity is shown and concentrate in that area. Most flats tackle will do the job as long as the leader is beefed up to 30- and 40-pound test fluorocarbon. We prefer Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorcarbon as it is virtually invisible under the surface. For our spinning reels, we spool with 10- to 20-pound test Spiderwire Stealth, 30-pound test Stealth on baitcasters. Snook and tarpon, even the smaller ones, are tackle busters, so we rely on a 7-foot medium heavy rod. This has the backbone to control the fish but light enough to enjoy the fight. Tarpon can be suckers for a weightless Berkley Gulp! Jerk Shad, either pearl white or rootbeer gold color, rigged on a 3/0 or 4/0 Superline hook. This is a bit too light of a bait for anything but spinning gear, so 18 FLORIDA

Photo by Sam Howzit as the sun stays low. Once the sun is up, the fish drop down but the bite stays strong. After we spot fish rolling slowly on the surface, we’ll cast about 5 or 6 feet directly in front of the fish. The trick is to work the baits slowly. Usually tarpon do not want a bait that is quickly retrieved. The bite will feel like a tiny thump. These fish have a tough lip, so a hard hook set is required. To release a tarpon, we handle with care. They still have some fight left even after being boat side. A firm hold on the fish prevents damage while we remove the hook. It is important that we return the fish to the water quickly and revive until he can swim away on his own.

raveling across the country for the last three years with the Bassmaster Elite Series has led me to some amazing fishing destinations. I’ve been about as far as one can go in every direction in the United States and have gotten to experience some great fishing. Although I don’t have a definitive answer on where my favorite place to fish is, I will say that without a doubt my favorite fish to target are big northern smallmouth bass. Let’s talk about some of the places I’ve been and what makes the places and the

Lakes. My next experience with northern smallies was on the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York. The Thousand Islands area is a beautiful part of the country and should be on every bass fisherman’s bucket list. The river is full of fish, and a lot of people there seem to fish more for other species so the smallmouth are quite catchable. A little ways away on Lake Ontario is the home of more willing smallmouth. Next on the list is Lake St. Clair in Michigan. St. Clair is

fisheries so special. My very first experience with the Great Lakes was at the Elite Series AOY championship in 2014 in Escanaba, Mich. I ended up finishing that tournament in ninth place and qualified for my first Bassmaster Classic. I was super impressed with the place as soon as I rolled into town. Everyone in Escanaba was very nice and hospitable, which is something you don’t find everywhere these days. It is a nice quiet town much like the Tennessee town I was raised in, with great places to eat and nice places to stay. As far as the fishery, just take a look at the weights from that tournament and they will speak for themselves. Little Bay and Big Bay de Noc are chock-full of big smallmouth as well as walleye, pike, perch and everything else you would expect to find in the Great

unique because you can either fish in the lake, which is great, or you can fish one of the rivers that flows into or out of the lake, which is what I chose to do when I was there. In all these places, smallmouth bass will absolutely chew a small soft plastic bait on a Mustad dropshot hook fished on a MHX EPS 81MLXF rod from Mud Hole Custom Tackle. Catching these fish requires good electronics, so I rely heavily on my Raymarine units to locate the big schools. As I was writing this last week, I got thinking I needed to go and pay those smallmouth a visit. My dad and I jumped in the car, drove to Lake Michigan and had a ball. I would encourage you to do the same before it gets too cold!

here’s stocking trout, and then there’s unintentionally releasing 80,000 rainbow trout into the open ocean. In the short-term, recreational anglers will be the beneficiaries of a $1.5 million accident at a Danish fish farm. Reuters reports that a cargo vessel collided with fish farm nets between Danish Islands in the Baltic Sea on Oct. 11. The fish, which were bound for the slaughterhouse within a few days’ time, weighed about 6.6 pounds each. Recreational anglers are being encouraged to get out on the fjord and catch as many of the escapees as possible. Authorities are concerned the jailbreak could have disastrous consequences for the native sea-run rainbow trout populations. According to the Associated Press report, wild populations are preparing to run up the rivers to spawn right now, and their eggs would make tasty morsels for the farmed fish. Other Danish biologists have dismissed the threat as minimal because the farmed trout are unprepared for life in the wild and are conditioned to heavy feedings. There is a good chance the fish will die of starvation or be consumed by larger predators before they are able to do much damage. One thing is for sure, if there are Walmarts in Denmark, the shelves will be emptied of spinners, salmon eggs, Powerbait and canned corn. There isn’t a stocked trout in the world that can resist Green Giant Niblets.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT PIRANA FISHING LURES With its patented Jet Trail System, Pirana Fishing Lures has given the fishing world one of those “why didn’t someone think of this before” moments. Pirana has taken proven elements of highly successful crankbaits and jerkbaits and given them a new feature that is the most innovative and effective to hit the market in years. These lures leave a bubble trail, an enticement that draws in predatory fish and triggers them to strike. The effectiveness of bubble trails is well documented. Bluewater anglers troll jet head lures. Bass anglers fish gurglers and buzzbaits. Pirana’s Jet Trail System brings the same concept to crankbaits and jerkbaits. With an open mouth and gill slots along the lure’s sides, water is forced through the lure on retrieve to create the jet trail. Pirana has also put a lot into the details. These lures have a finely tuned wobble and dive as well as a rattle chamber for additional noise. Bright red gills, holographic silver eyes, a hex-scale pattern and a high-gloss finish complete the package. The lasting trail of bubbles, however, is what sets them apart. Pirana’s latest, which should hit the market soon, is the new and improved P200, which has a lip above the mouth opening. Whether the target species are redfish, seatrout and snook inshore or largemouth and smallmouth bass or trout in freshwater, anything that will eat a plug will be more likely to eat one with a jet trail. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT UNDERWATER FISH LIGHT If you live on the water or have ever cruised any local canals or shorelines at night, you’ve probably seen how effective and widespread Underwater Fish Light’s products are. They seem to be just about everywhere, and are almost always loaded with fish. Their classic Natural Green lights look amazing in any waterway, but they recently released a new line of Vibrant Green underwater lights that illuminate the water with a richer green color that really stands out from the crowd. In addition to the unique look, these lights are also 50 percent brighter than the classic systems and are perfect for those looking to “out glow” their neighbors. Of course these new lights come backed by the same guarantees that Underwater Fish Light is famous for, including their well known “Fish Guaranteed or Your Money Back” promise. You can try the new Vibrant Green systems or any of their other models for sixty nights in your own waterway, and if you’re not thrilled with the performance of the light, you can return it for a full refund. Obviously they don’t get too many returns. There is also a new line of Caribbean Blue underwater lights that look incredible in clear waterways, but customers outside of the Florida Keys should opt for either the Natural Green or Vibrant Green, as these will look the best in murkier waters. With a 3-year warranty and money back guarantee, you can’t go wrong with Underwater Fish Light. Visit them online at www.FishLight.com or call 1-855-FISH-LIGHT for more information.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT INHIBITOR VCI PRO CHIPS FOR CORROSION PROTECTION Protecting your fishing gear from rust and corrosion has never been easier, or more effective. The Inhibitor VCI offers unrivaled corrosion and rust prevention to protect lures, hooks, reels and more. Fishing tackle is a magnet for rust and corrosion. Many people do not fully appreciate the money and time avid anglers put into building their collection of lures. Rust will damage hooks, split rings and the body of the lure. With VCI Pro Chips you can make sure you never lose any of your fishing equipment to rust. Saltwater speeds up rust and corrosion; protect your fishing tackle from saltwater. Inhibitor VCI Pro Chips are a safe, easy and economical way to ensure your fishing tackle, tool boxes, small part bins and any other small metal items stay rust free. Each chip is treated on both sides with Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors that release a non-toxic vapor to blend with moisture and oxygen and stop rust and corrosion. The special vapors penetrate into the smallest cracks or crevices, providing total protection in marine environments. There is no scent residue. Fish will never know you are rust free! With Inhibitor rust prevention products, even saltwater cannot cause your fishing tackle to rust or corrode. They are great for parts bins and tool boxes at home, too. It works on all ferrous and non-ferrous metals: brass, bronze, copper, aluminum, steel, and stainless steel. Visit www.theinhibitor.com to get your 20-pack of VCI Pro Chips for only $5.99.

Attention Advertising Sales Reps Have you ever wondered what it would be like to own the media company that you were selling advertising for? Ever considered how different your life would be if you didn’t have to hand over the bulk of your sales revenue to your employer? Have you ever thought about how much easier your sales job could be if you didn’t have to beg your sales manager for every little extra thing that you wanted to give your customer? Ever wondered what it would be like to control your own time? You don’t have to wonder anymore. Coastal Angler and its freshwater component The Angler Magazine are offering magazine franchises throughout the continental U.S. and abroad. Now, you can be the publisher and completely control the advertising department of your magazine. After nine years of franchising this magazine and with 42 current locations, we can say with confidence that these home-based magazine locations can be opened in nearly any location with a minimum population base of 500,000 and an active angling community. We have also identified our ideal candidate as being someone with previous media sales experience. Male or female, success in this endeavor is gaged more on advertising sales than fishing prowess. If you are a current or former media advertising sales rep, you owe it to yourself to check out our franchise opportunities.
