tretching 500 miles across the northern side of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Trench is the deepest in the Atlantic Ocean. This 6-mile-deep feature is part of what makes the Virgin Islands one of the world’s best sportfishing destinations. Here, where the Atlantic Ocean borders the clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Virgin Islands rise as the peaks of an enormous underwater mountain chain. The islands offer some of the best diving, snorkeling and most beautiful beaches anywhere, but it is off these islands that serious anglers come to play. Beneath the surface, the topography is spectacular. About 20 miles north of St. Thomas, the travel hub of the U.S. Virgin Islands, the North Drop falls precipitously to depths of more than 28,000 feet into the Puerto Rico Trench. Cool Atlantic currents are stirred off Virgin Gorda, and sea life abounds. The big pelagic species congregate to feed on an abundance of baitfish drawn by the drop. A similar situation occurs off the South Drop, just 8 miles south of St. Thomas, and the smaller drops around St. Croix. Short boat rides put anglers on abundant baitfish and the bigger fish that feed on them. Marlin can be caught year-round, but spring to fall is peak time for blue marlin, which show up in numbers and feed aggressively around the full moons. The bite is legendary. The IGFA Women’s alltackle world record, a 1,073-pound blue marlin, was caught off the Virgin Islands, along with 24 other world records over the years. The granders—1,000-pound-plus marlin—show up on occasion, but the Virgin Islands also offer numbers. During the USVI Open/Atlantic Blue Marlin Tournament, 207 blue marlin were released over four days of fishing. Marlin average about 350 pounds out of St. Thomas, and 500-pounders are caught regularly. But blues aren’t the only game in town. The location of these islands 6

almost seems strategic. Sailfish, white marlin, tuna, wahoo, dolphin… the most sought after gamefish for sport and the table frequent these drops in good numbers to feed. Working the drop by trolling rigs across the depth contours produces consistently good action year-round. The sailfish bite peaks October through March. Yellowfin tuna are present late summer through winter, and blackfin and skipjack tuna provide
action year-round. Wahoo are also a year-round target, and dolphin fishing peaks in fall. The fishing is world class, and the Virgin Islands are also easy to get to. A short plane ride from the continental U.S. puts anglers in the middle of the action. And with lodging that ranges from quaint to luxurious, there are options for anyone who wants to live out their offshore fantasy. To learn more about the Puerto Rico Trench, go to

he numbers don’t lie. Guatemala’s Pacific coast is the most productive sailfish destination in the world. Days of double-digit releases would be considered spectacular anywhere. Off Guatemala, it’s just an average day. Annual release rates show a dozen sailfish per boat, per day. And that’s just a year-round average. It is not unusual during peak seasons for boats to raise more than 50 or 60 sails a day, sometimes a lot more. In March of 2006, Capt. Ron Hamlin, and the anglers on the Captain Hook, released 124 sailfish in a single day less than 15 miles off Guatemala. The legendary former skipper out of Casa Vieja Lodge in Puerto San Jose still holds the record. For conventional anglers, it’s pretty much a sure thing. For fly anglers, it’s the best odds you’ll find. The concentrations of sailfish in this small slice of the Pacific are astounding. But it’s not just sails. Natural factors such as dramatically shifting currents, temperature barriers and high oxygen levels close to the surface combine to hold baitfish year-round. The eddy formations that swirl off the Guatemalan coast are crowded with life, including the big pelagics and the fish they feed on. There are more Pacific sailfish than can be found anywhere, but there are also marlin, wahoo, slammer Dorado and yellowfin tuna. Casa Vieja Lodge says blue marlin in the 200- to 400-pound range are thickest April through July, with black marlin up to 400 pounds showing up December through March and smaller striped marlin November through January. On average, every Casa Vieja boat encounters marlin every three days while targeting sailfish. During peak billfish seasons of December through March and then again from May through July, grand slams are an everyday possibility. Boats fish anywhere from 2 to 50 miles out in an area renowned for flat seas. The most consistently productive area is a canyon known as “The Pocket.” Only about 40 nautical miles wide, The Pocket drops to depths of 3,500 to 4,000 feet. Those constantly shifting currents deflect off the walls of the pocket stirring up nutrient rich waters that attract bait and big gamefish. Casa Vieja takes the fishing very seriously. Guided by some of the world’s top-tagging and award winning captains, their fleet of classically maintained 35’ Contenders and 40’ Sportfishers consistently produces world-class results. They are inheritors of history. A majority of the

captains and lodge staff were employees of the original Fins ’n Feathers Inn that launched the Guatemalan sportfishing industry. These are the same sportsmen who have cared for the fishery since it exploded onto the sportfishing scene in the 1990s. With total release using circle hooks, the conservation philosophy has been central to Casa Vieja’s operations for more than a decade. With this kind of stewardship, as well as emphasis from the Guatemalan Government on limiting commercial fishing, the fishery continues to thrive. The lodge was also designed by lifelong sportsmen who know it is best to recover from a non-stop day of action on the water in worldclass accommodations. Luxurious rooms and top-notch local cuisine are paired with a staff trained to fill the needs of discerning travelers. It’s the perfect place to relive the day’s catch or dream of the morning’s possibilities. For more information on fishing Guatemala and the Casa Vieja Lodge, go to www.casaviejalodge.com.

our Rip Roller is tearing up the water as you retrieve it in short quick jerks. Suddenly the water explodes from the vicious strike of a peacock bass. In your excitement and shock, you instinctively jerk your rod up before the peacock has had a chance to get the hook firmly in his mouth, and 6 inches of lure and three massive treble hooks come flying past your head. Your first encounter with the huge peacock bass of Brazil’s Amazon will be one you never forget. Fishing for this massive, hard-fighting predator can be best described to anglers as hooking into a 20-pound smallmouth bass that is having a bad day. To top off this fishing adventure, you are fishing over 1,000 miles from the ocean in the heart of the world’s largest rain forest on black water rivers that are home to more than 2,500 species of fish and the world’s greatest diversity of flora and fauna. Anglers will catch four or five different species of peacock bass, ranging from the popoca and butterfly species weighing an average of 3 to 5 pounds to the massive paca or arzu, the current world record of which is a 29-pounder caught by Andrea Zaccherini in 2010. Anglers can also catch aerobatic arowana, several species of catfish weighing upwards of 200 pounds, wolf fish and myriad other species. Peacocks will readily hit topwater baits on waters that aren’t heavily pressured, the most famous being the big propeller driven Woodchopper and its clones, as well as the more subtle Spook type baits. As with most species of fish, subsurface jerkbaits and jigs will produce bigger numbers of fish caught than topwater lures. Fly fishermen have discovered this game

hey call Islamorada the Sportfishing Capital of the World. This slim string of six small islands about halfway down the Florida Keys separates the Atlantic from the Gulf of Mexico, and just offshore in the Atlantic, warm blue currents of the Gulf Stream deliver a steady flow of baitfish and the big migrating pelagic species that feed on them. The Continental Shelf is a highway for swordfish that move through in depths of 1,400 to 1,900 feet with a consistency that may be unmatched anywhere in the world. It is possible to target these deepwater giants any month of the year off Islamorada, and even during the day. But it is sportfishing only for hardcore anglers. Swordfish are elusive anywhere, the most difficult of the billfish to catch, and fights lasting several hours are the reward for tempting a bite from 150- to 400-pound or larger fish deep in the abyss. If catching a swordfish is one of the boxes that remains to be checked off on your bucket list, you’d be hard pressed to find a better place to do it. A little closer in, where the Gulf Stream swings over broken bottom and the offshore humps Islamorada has become famous for, it creates rips where disoriented baitfish become easy prey for dolphin, wahoo, sailfish, kingfish and tuna. In the summer months, flocks of birds are a dead giveaway for dolphinfish pushing frenzied bait to the surface. When that’s not going on, fish can be found trolling feather or jet head lures and plugs. A bite while trolling means it’s time to slow down and cast baits to catch other fish drawn to the same area. Sometimes this is met with spectacular results, especially for mahi, which tend to gather in numbers. Some of the most spectacular action on the humps comes from blackfin tuna. It can show up in spurts any time of year, but fall typically brings a push of 10-pound-plus tuna that can be incited into surface-feeding frenzies. Chumming up blackfins with pilchards is a very visual experience that allows even anglers armed with fly rods to hook up with multiple hard-fighting fish.

As the tuna move toward the reefs with the late fall and winter baitfish migrations, the bigger fish begin to show up, and kite fishing becomes one of the preferred methods for teasing up fish 20 pounds and larger. The other fish that shows up to take advantage of baitfish from November through the winter is sailfish. There’s a reason why Islamorada is home to so many sailfish tournaments during the winter months. It can seem like everyone drops everything they’re doing for a chance to fly release flags. In fall and winter, sails move in to gorge on abundant ballyhoo around the reefs. This can present opportunities to anglers less than 5 miles from the docks off the islands of Islamorada. The 130- to 200-foot depths produce the most consistent bite where strong currents and changes in water color to a deep royal blue give away the edges and rips where sailfish hunt. Trolling or kite fishing the reefs can produce numerous fish in the 60-pound range when the bite is on. But on sunny days when the weather cooperates, it is possible to sight fish for sailfish inside the reefs in water as shallow as 20 or 30 feet. Even smaller boats can get in on this action. From the tower, crewmembers seek out the fish. When the alarm goes out, chum and baits are deployed. There’s really no technique more exciting. Anglers in the know await those bluebird skies on winter days when seeking out sailfish becomes as much hunting as it is fishing. And if all the offshore action isn’t enough to convince any angler to start making plans right now, fall also brings some of the biggest bonefish of the year to the Islamorada flats. Time it right, and you can be fishing the flats in the morning and trolling the bluewater in the afternoon. What more could you ask for?

THE ONLY DURABLE HIGH QUALITY ROD WRAP
Russ Lane: Bassmaster Elite Series™ Pro
“Winn overwraps help me as a tournament angler in so many ways. They’re great in all weather conditions. I don’t have to physically squeeze my rod during a cast as hard as I did with cork or EVA. That gives me a better degree of accuracy with less fatigue. Multiple color options also allow me to organize different rod actions and lengths using different colors. I honestly could never use a rod again without my Winn overwrap!”

I
believe this is the Golden Age of fishing tackle. For my money, the amazing quality and range of rods available to us today is clear evidence of that claim. Improvements in graphite quality, skeletal reel seats and lightweight braid-resistant guides have paved a path to conspicuous performance benefits, and rods conscientiously tailored to nearly every angling task are helping anglers execute specific techniques with a flourish. Yet, until recently, the seat of angler control—the handle—seemed stuck in the Dark Ages. Cork, a survivor from a bygone era, seemed like it would dominate rod handles forever, with EVA foam the only alternative material allowed any territorial claim. But progress has come, finally, to the rod handle. In recent years, alternative rod grip materials have hit the market including carbon fiber, a slick lightweight option; tough Kevlar tubing; composite cork, a denser and more durable cork-based material blend; and Syncork, a light and durable material with a rough-hewn appearance. Some have used shrinkwrap to give EVA foam a different look and feel, too. Color and design options have emerged, with even a “camo cork” available
now to rod builders. One of the biggest breakthroughs may have come two years ago when Winn Grips (www.winngrips.com), the Huntington Beach, California-based maker of grips for sports equipment, introduced its interchangeable grip system and rolled out a full line of handsomely designed rod grips made from its patented WinnDry material, which maintains its tacky feel in wet conditions and weather extremes. Early Winn prototypes were colorful and interesting, and they provided a hint of the performance benefits of ergonomic comfort and angler control that has come to characterize the grips today. Yet some thought early designs too similar to the golf grips that have made Winn a global leader in that field. Winn’s founder, aerospace engineering pioneer Dr. Ben Huang, took angler feedback to heart. Winn’s grip system has evolved into a versatile line of rod handle components. Rod makers, from leading brands to custom builders, have caught on quickly to the advantages of the grips. At ICAST 2016 in Orlando, Lew’s Fishing Tackle captured three Best of Show awards for products featuring Winn’s advanced polymer materials in rod handles and reel knobs. Lew’s, Kistler, Denali and others displayed new rod lines with Winn grips. Winn has introduced an element of “fashion” to fishing rods, too, by offering a broad range of bold colors and multi-colored and sometimes multi-textured designs that can complement tournament jerseys, boat colors and wraps, or represent a signature look or the colors of a favorite sports team. Winn’s quieter contribution to today’s tackle evolution could come in the emerging practice of “retrofitting” favorite old rods with Winn rod grips and in routinely fitting cork and EVA rod handles with a Winn “skin” in the form of Winn Superior Rod Wrap, a tape-like overwrap.

Center s SPEARFISHING TRAVEL
SHERI DAYE
A
s spearfishing continues to grow and capture people’s interest, so has the amount of travel related to spearfishing. The allure of exotic locations, different species, and the possibility of world records has spawned a new breed of traveler, and resorts and charters are happy to cater to this crowd. In Florida, there are live-aboard charters that take scuba divers to fertile grounds out of the lower Keys into the Gulf or the Dry Tortugas – such as Seaclusive Charters. There are also charters that cater to smaller groups of freediving spearfishers such as Killshot, Into the Blue, and more. The Keys are especially attractive to vacationers, as the scenery above the water can be just as interesting as below. In the Bahamas, resorts with marinas are well-equipped to handle divers, some of them weekend warriors coming by boat from Florida. The clear waters and beautiful marine life are a big draw. Bahamian law requires freediving-only and the use of either slings or polespears for spearfishing. Rather than being a deterrent, it’s created a new breed of divers who enjoy this simple and primitive form of hunting. The ability to add cracked conch or a lobster tail to a meal is a big bonus. Both coasts of the United States have a number of spearfishing charters to choose from as well. Divers can enjoy a change of scenery and try their luck at hunting white sea bass in the kelps of California, cobias off the rigs of Louisiana, stripers in the waters off Rhode Island, African Pompanos off the wrecks of Hatteras – all exciting catches. International travel has increased significantly in the past few years. Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica are a big draw with desirable species such as Cubera Snappers, cobias, and tunas – depending on which coast. Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga, and Ascension Island have been yielding world record wahoos and tunas, drawing the more hard-core divers. Here’s some quick tips to make sure your travel is fun, safe, and productive: 1. Go with friends and watch out for each other - in the water and out.
2. Choose a reputable charter that specializes in spearing and ask the captain about fish and conditions. Make sure your skill level is up to par for that location. 3. Make sure you are properly equipped for the fish you are targeting and follow the law. Be aware of the local fishing regulations and limits. 4. Use a Sportube to pack your spearguns and use the wetsuits for padding. Tell TSA you have “fishing equipment” rather than using the word “speargun”. 5. Buy DAN insurance – they are a reputable agency known for covering divers, including evacuation services. For divers in search of adventure, traveling to different hunting grounds can yield the trip (and fish) of a lifetime. Life is short, so get out and enjoy it! hanks for picking up our November issue. Last month brought us great weather and even better fishing. Though the water has been low, the Salmon River Chinook and Coho run has been good, with lots of big Kings being landed. This run should still be going well into this month with trophy Browns and Steelhead stealing the focus as the month matures. We have tons to share with you this month, more articles will replace our popular port reports while our boating season snoozes. If you are still boating, we have several dynamite Muskie articles to put you on these true trophy’s. We have added a new fly-fishing section with field expert Charlie Warfield advising us of our regions dynamite waters. We are very excited about a new writer in Mark Usyk, who is a trout and Adirondack fanatic. Lake Champlain’s landlock salmon and trout run should
also run late due to low waters, so another new writer, Rick Redman, will provide you with a Champlain tribs guide. NYS Winter Classic is something we are also very excited about. It’s a great statewide derby that all waters and any methods that can win you great cash and merchandise for seven different species. This event is a great way to learn more about our winter fishery around the state and a venue to showcase that Upstate NY is the boss of NY fishing. Our initiation into social media has begun, so you can enjoy our daily pictures on Instagram at Instagram. com/anglermagazine, or visit our quickly popular Facebook page for daily fishing reports at Facebook.com/anglermag. Our new website will be up for the December issue, but you can visit Theanglermag.com/upstatenewyork and get our issue digitally by selecting online fishing magazines and scrolling to the bottom for the Upstate NY issue.

October was certainly a fantastic month for the Salmon River, with lots of big Kings and Coho had by virtually all who wet a line. Plenty of sunshine and fair weather has accompanied our plethora of fish. The river has mostly been at a 185 with a short flush of higher water on Oct. 15 to move fish up to the hatchery. NEWS FLASH, it’s not over, when we went to print, there was still plenty of fish hovering around the mouth of the river and in the estuary. IT’S STILL KING TIME! We believe the Salmon run will continue well into November with Browns and Steelhead that are starting to trickle in. This later run will give you an opportunity to fish for Chinooks, Coho, Browns and Steelhead with less angler competition. When we do get some fall rains, expect thick concentration of Browns, since they need to spawn also. This may actually work out well for the anglers that are more interested in trout than salmon, since many trout get harvested by fishermen that are there for the salmon. Those concentrating their efforts have been most successful with eggs and spawn or flies. Estaz flies with brighter colors have certainly been the ticket with plenty of sunshine. As the run matures and the fish matriculate upstream darker and more natural presentations increase in their productivity. As the interest turns more to the trout, decrease the size of your baits and line diameter of your leaders and mainline. Have an inventory of different colors of estaz flies, woolybuggers and stoneflies. As fall continues into winter the more natural stones will increase in productivity. This is a perfect year for someone who has never fished the Salmon River to get up and learn. You won’t be intimidated by high water and walking the river banks has been easier and exploring has been a pleasant dividend of the lower water. As far as the Sandy’s, they were getting some runs, but their flows have been pitifully low. They should also be experiencing a later run and concentrating on the lower ends when we do get some precipitation should produce a mixed bag of salmonoids. A Salmon Trip to Remember By Joe Foley
T
he Salmon River, a mecca for east coast anglers, is steeped in the lore of fishing legends. With an annual migration of over 300,000 salmon, these sacred waters offer anglers the opportunity to catch the trophy salmon of their dreams. My father and I made our annual trip to Pulaski, NY over Columbus Day weekend. After a slow start to the season, thought to be from severe drought conditions, overnight rain several days before our arrival triggered a fresh influx of salmon into the river and promising fishing reports. We met our guide, Richard Thomas of Salmon River Guides, at 0300 in Pulaski Harbor to begin our expedition. Under a perfectly clear sky studded with stars, we set out in our drift boat and dropped anchor behind the break wall of the artificial harbor. Our eyes were glued to the fluorescent tipped rods as we cast pink colored egg sacs into the mouth of the harbor, the bottle neck through which all salmon have to enter as they begin the treacherous journey to their spawning grounds. After an uneventful start to the morning, my father and I looked at each other, both with the same unspoken thought on our mind. As we both reeled in our lines to reset our bait, I suddenly felt the tip of my rod snap down as the rod almost flew out of my hands. I quickly tightened my grip and yelled “fish on!” I heard that sound, that every angler loves, of the line being ripped off the reel as our first fish of the day made a run out of the harbor into open waters. I set my head lamp out into the distance to watch him go airborne three times, shaking its head trying to spit the hook. I kept pressure on and slowly brought him closer to the boat as he began to tire. On two separate occasions, he made last minute runs as we brought him to the side of the boat, exerting every last ounce of energy to escape his fate.

After our guide Richard finally netted him and brought him safely in the boat, I was amazed at the sheer power, energy and aggression of this river monster. Our first salmon of the day was a male King, 26 lbs and a little under 3 ft long. As the sun started to break over the horizon, the harbor came alive with salmon jumping all around us. We started by casting fluorescent green spoons and my father and I each got smaller females to the boat. With the sun rising over the tree tops, we then began trolling with Rapalla lures just outside the mouth of the harbor. With our guide rowing us through the waves at that perfect trolling speed, our rod tips both doubled over again! My father and I each caught another female, heaping with roe, thrashing violently on our lines as they devoured our lures in full-on attack mode. These were my favorite fish of the day, both in the mid-20s for weight, fighting to the last second before we brought them aboard. By the end of the trip, we both limited out. With our biceps burning and lower backs aching, we gave each other a high five and our hardworking, tireless guide a slap on the back. I am incredibly grateful to be able to share this experience with my father, a lifetime angler and outdoorsmen. The only question on my mind as we drove back home recounting the battles of the day was: “When does steelhead season start?” Joe Foley is a avid angler with a passion for trout fishing. "World Class Fishing" OSWEGO REPORT AND FORECAST BY ROBERT MALLORY With unseasonably warm temperatures and very low water levels in the Oswego River, October saw most captains and recreational fisherman targeting the Oswego Harbor for good king salmon action using mostly plugs such as J-PLugs and Silver Horde plugs. Once the salmon started moving into the river the low water levels made fishing fairly easy for those fishing up near the dam using traditional bottom bouncing techniques as a couple bumps in water flow by the power company drew fish out of the harbor and into the river proper. Fisherman targeting the slower waters off the high wall and in the lower river were having great success floating chunks of cured salmon skein under floats towards the beginning of the month and that bite continues to be strong into Mid-October. Even with the low flows, salmon fishing remains good on the Oswego river. Good numbers of brown trout and steelhead started entering the river, with angling success reported as very good. This trend should just continue to get better as we head into November. Remember that portions of the Oswego River require an approved personal floatation device when wading in the water. Good Luck and Good Fishing!

ngler Magazine of Upstate NY predicts BIG things for this coming Muskie Season, especially on the St. Lawrence. Many believe a world record or contenders are possible in coming seasons on our majestic river. Here are 5 Angler Magazine options to help make your Muskie dreams come true. 1000 Island Bait Store – Truly the Mecca of Upstate NY and St. Lawrence Muskie shops. The Berger Rig was developed at the store, which is what many charter captains use who troll the river from depth of 25-100 feet of water. The rig consists of a Believer 10-inch plug, a 36-52-inch leader tied in back with a large Williams spoon. Many captains custom tape the spoon, and both baits take strikes. Todd and his staff will show you the rig and/or sell you it tied up. Trolled with downriggers down 20-25 feet, planer boards, wire-line and flat lined should put you in range. 1000 Island Bait has charts, maps and most importantly guide lists and schedules for 24 River Guides. They highly recommend that a trip with a guide here to provide the gear and or teach you the nuances of the diverse fishery, considered WORLD FAMOUS in our region! They often refer and share technique inquiries with Bob Walters of Water Wolf Charters. 1000 Island bait also has a massive and varied collection of local and national Muskie gear.

Muskie Haven on The St. Lawrence River!! Water Wolf Charters – Capt. Bob Walters fishing out of the Village of Clayton has 3 trips open till Dec.15 (closing day). Bob is truly an innovator, traditionalist, teacher and lover of St. Lawrence Muskies. He has developed a downrigger/camera system that you watch on 2 state of the art screens while fishing inside his heated enclosed 31 foot Muskie craft. His boat is a floating devotion to Muskie knowledge and gear. His 59 lb. specimen he landed in a past recent season is on display at the 1000 Island Museum, home of The Muskie Hall of Fame. Bob anticipates water temperature drops that trigger big fish migrations from Lake Ontario and Water Wolf has the experience and “state of the art” equipment to find them. Bob claims that later in the season, bigger and more fish appear on his electronics. Nice walleyes and Northerns are often dividends of his efforts. Water Wolf Charters Instruction/Clayton 1000 Island Museum Tour – Bob, the gentleman fisherman that he is, volunteered to The Angler readers his free advice and technique knowledge via his phone call, website or simple boat visits in the town of Clayton. You see, Bob is a teacher at heart. He loves to talk Muskies and sincerely wants to help other get in on the excitement. The Water Wolf is docked feet from the 1000 Island Museum, and other guides are regulars at the museum during the season. Jeff Garnsey is on the board of the museum and one of the 24 listed 1000 Island Bait Store guides. Bob, Jeff and other Muskie guides often gather at the Koffee Kove in Clayton, once again a close walk from Bob’s boat. Together they are willing to get you on the right track, whether you plan a charter or fish from your own boat. The museum couples as the Muskie Hall of Fame. Field Expert Jim Sorrento trolls his small fishing boat in the areas of Chippewa Point and Morristown, and has been increasingly learning to hook Muskie’s. He trolls and casts the areas for walleyes, northerns and bass. When he started hooking and attracting Muskie, it motivated him to increase his efforts to concentrate on these monsters in the last several years. Jim lives in Buffalo and weekends at The River to compete in the UFL (Underground Fishing League). This league is directed by Jim’s brother Michael Sorrento (Angler Mag field expert) who commutes from Indianapolis to participate and choreograph their events. Jim has hooked 5 Muskies and has now landed 3. (38,47, and 50 inch). He flat line trolls plugs with 15 lb. braid and a 5-6 in steel leader and trolls in 30 to 100 ft. mostly with reef runners. He likes the clear mirror pink, salamander and fire tiger. St. Lawrence County Fishing Guide is loaded with tons of River and area fishing information and guidance. Refer to the guide for the many
other MUSKIE waters in St. Lawrence County. This county boasts the most diverse Muskie population in the state with its large and medium sized rivers or small streams, many that are populated with Muskies. Request a copy at 877-228-7810 or visit FISHCAP.Net. The St.Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce boasts a sizeable library of fishing and outdoor literature and you are welcome to visit them at 101 Main Street Canton,NY. Anyone Muskie fishing PLEASE call and text me at 518-898-6484 or email me at frankie@theanglermagazine.com. We plan a follow-up story for December and will be following Water Wolf Charters Novembers results along with all of 1000 Island Bait Store guides. I am planning a November 8th trip which will be documented also. Please share your information.

Upstate New York Tiger Muskies
O
ne of the most overlooked fish in New York is the Tiger Muskie. There are not too many bodies of water that offer these fine fish, and they are definitely not easy to catch, but the effort is worth it once you are holding one of these trophies in your hands. In my opinion, they are one of the most beautiful fish that New York has to offer, as well as one of the best fighting- power house runs along with air-born leaps out of the water. You can successfully catch these fish year round. Most waters that hold Tigers are weedy and relatively shallow, so lures like swim baits, spinner baits and buzz baits work well and keep you somewhat weed-less. In deeper water, crank baits, jerk baits and jigs work just as well. In the spring, Tigers act a lot like pike- hanging in the shallows and in weedy bays. As summer comes and the water temperatures increase, they tend to go a little deeper. In the fall they return to the shallow water and feed pretty aggressively. Winter is my

Fishing With My Dad By Frank Geremski
F
or as long as I can recall, my dad (BIG FRANK) was an expert fisherman. My first memories, which began my fishing obsession, were on Oneida Lake drifting homemade spinners for which my father became somewhat renowned around the Syracuse Fire Department and the City. We used to tie them all off-season, along with melting lead for special sinkers we molded that Big Frank said made a big difference on your drift. He used to crush the walleyes on Oneida, and it was commonplace for fisherman to follow our 20 ft. Penn Yan around and line up their drift with us. Often other boats would pull right up to us for fishing reports and/or to buy spinners from him. The generous soul that he was, he often simply gave these fishermen his special spinners. They had certain bead color patterns that had to be specifically sequenced. While or after the transactions were occurring my dad would introduce me or explain to me that they were fellow firefighters or my Uncle Dicks neighbor, etc... You see, men did favors for each other every day. It was the way to get by, and I would later remember these fishermen returning favors to us. My Uncle was usually on the boat with us, and we often would get our limit early. Then, we would go and target perch, which somehow my dad knew were active around 121 or at a certain dropoff that at that time only were available through paper maps and charts. Like it was yesterday, I recall my dear sisters Michele, Cheryl, and my thoughtful Mother getting him a “flasher-depth finder” for Christmas from Fredons when they were a luxury item. We couldn’t wait 12 more hours, so we gave it to him on Christmas eve at my Aunt Carm and Uncle Bob’s house party right after we fried up smelt that my dad netted, cleaned and prepared for a 100 at my Italian mothers extended family Christmas party. With that finder he got even more deadly. Augmenting his techniques of lining up islands and landmarks was now coupled with technology that we could now use to find schools. I recall him targeting suspended fish that others new nothing about, and him adjusting his tactics to fish higher in the water column, landing trophies while others got skunked. He then decided to try a different fishery, completely changing tactics, purchasing and acquiring new gear to target Lake Trout on Seneca Lake. A group of Syracuse friends and fishermen (Bob Carbone, barber Eddie Brown and Steve White and others) went west during one of Oneida Lakes downturns, and he started crushing them there. Fisherman always wanted to know what he was using or doing different. He taught me to know your spot and follow patterns, and to pay particular attention to subtle depth changes, where he would consistently see marks feeding from the bottom up 5-15 feet. He found old antique Victrola boxes and custom designed them to recoil wire, which we used to hand-line Christmas tree rigs and sawbellies (alewives). He spent the first hour on the water scouting with the flasher, and netting wounded baitfish, because he claimed a lot of the bait we could buy was from a different lake and it wasn’t a match. Plus, he said that he would notice patterns 10 UPSTATE NEW YORK
NOVEMBER 2016
in the sizes of wounded bait and only use the popular size, and that was one of the differences he claimed why he was more successful than the other guys. THIS TRICK HE ONLY SHARED WITH ME, because he did not want competition taking his evidence. As time went on, we bought a new boat together, the Alumacraft Trophy 185 that I still fish with now. He helped me, mostly he did it, rig up our new boat with downriggers and planers, and he would dedicate his time and effort in getting our boat ready all week for our next weekly trip. I was the rigger while he steered and guided us over his “honeyholes”. He expertly would explain how to troll in S patterns and just intersect the bottom with our deepest rig prior to moving out deeper where he noticed suspended fish on the drop-off. Until writing this, I claimed responsibility for success by rigging us correctly, but I know now that we were a team and that the knowledge in me was acquired during his lifetime of fishing. He was a great partner, because he was always willing to try new waters with me and we fished as many Upstate waters as possible in pursuit of trophy Salmon, Trout and Walleye. Though we had great success utilizing our techniques on many other Finger Lakes and Ontario, his true love was Seneca Lake. We always entered the annual Memorial Day Lake Trout Derby on Seneca and in his last 20 years we rented a camp on the lake for the whole week and made it our family vacation. He would gloat with pride when we showed up at the weigh station with a heavy cooler, him hearing the events staff telling the crowd, “Here comes a couple of ringers”. We won substantial prizes in 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, two separate placings in 2006, and in 2007, and the plagues still don the “wall of fame” in my parents Liverpool home. I distinctly remember the last big trout that my father fought in his quest to win the derby and the many lessons that it taught me. On this trip his health and strength was failing and he mentioned he wasn’t certain that next year was an option. The derby was over in 2 hours and I wanted to get packed up and head in, since the fishing was slow. He said, he’d prefer to stay and make another pass, because he kept marking suspended fish offshore of Starkey Point while I was tending the rods and his instincts said we were going to connect with a big bow. We did, just minutes later, he hooked and fought a 10lb plus silver beast that would have taken first place, only to see that rainbow jump 4 feet out of the water and shake loose. I was so disappointed, but he wasn’t. He said he was happy the fish was free and pleased that he was right to continue. He taught me through fishing to be creative and persistent. To trust my instincts, not just in fishing but also in life. His examples showed me that attention to details is an important aspect of success. Him taking me fishing made huge impacts on my life. If he didn’t, I certainly wouldn’t be writing this article today, and you wouldn’t be reading this right now. My loving father passed away 2 years ago, and I miss both him and fishing together, but his legacy lives on in the fishing tips he provided me that I share with you. THANKS DAD.

Salmon Don’t Eat By Charlie Warfield
I
t is just before sunrise on a cool clear early October morning and I am standing on the bank of the Salmon River in The Douglaston Salmon Run (DSR) just outside Pulaski NY. The Weather has been awesome a perfect mix of cooler fall weather and the last blasts of summer sunshine. But it has been dry, very dry and the river is running very low. It has made for a slow salmon season so far. But there are fish in the pool every once in a while one will porpoise in a taunting fashion as if to say “Come on let’s see what your made of ” I have had the privilege of doing some fishing related travel for work and I’m always glad to get paid to fish but since the Salmon River is just 2 hrs. from where I live, I was less enthusiastic about this work/fishing trip then I have been about some others. I had previously fished the Salmon River during the Salmon run a total of 2 times with mixed success. The general atmosphere of the place and its combat style of fishing and fighting for runs not to mention multiple times I’ve witnessed people snagging King Salmon by the dorsal fin landing the fish then looking around to see if DEC was watching and proceeding to put the half dead (sometimes half rotten) fish on a stringer… The whole thing just isn’t my style. But work is work, and I always try to make the most of the moment. I was invited to test some exciting new gear by Douglas Outdoors, and I was genuinely excited to fish in the DSR, I
know plenty of true sportsmen that have had great things to say about this section of river. The excitement was palpable, there were a lot of fresh fish pushing up from the Estuary, and these fish weren’t half dead fish almost done fulfilling their genetically programed obligation to their species. No these were fresh fish, bright and colorful, and full of life. Any doubt that I had about the vitality of these fish was quickly put to rest. On my third cast the line came tight with a 30Lbs king Salmon that proceeded to make a good run up stream and put me into my backing, then with two jumps she turned and ran back down straight towards me the battle ended after 10 minutes and I took the fly out of the fishes mouth, then after a quick picture I placed the big girl in the water and held her as she found her baring’s, after a moment with a powerful kick of her
tail she was off to complete her life cycle and replenish her race. I continued to catch fish all day, and out of 9 hook ups I was able to bring seven fish to the net, the best part of all of this to me was that every single fish I landed was hooked perfectly in the mouth. Dispelling the old saying that “Salmon in the river don’t eat” they were defiantly eating and weather it was that they were just tasting everything that looked like it could be food. More likely they were a bit pissed off and decided to take out their frustration on my flies, in any case they were eating the flies. And I was having a great time catching these awesome fish! Sometimes I would just sit on the bank and let my arms rest, I would watch in awe as the fish pushed up the river, there were so many fish that sometimes they would create foot tall wake in the pool. This trip really changed my mind about Salmon fishing, I’m the kind of person that would be almost as happy to just sit and watch these fish move up through the river, let alone catch them on a fly! The DSR is beautiful, they do an excellent job of maintaining their 8000+ acre and the river that flows through the property, it is clean and not nearly as crowded as the rest of the river. I’m not sure the next time I’ll be up on the Salmon River, probably not until November and then I’ll be fishing for Steelhead. The whole river can be good for Steelhead, but if you want the best chance for fresh chrome then the lower river is the way to go. I have a feeling I’ll have to try out the DSR for Silver Bullets this winter. Otherwise I’ll fish Sportsmen’s, and the Lower Fly. I’m the kind of fishermen that needs a balance of comradery and solitude, somedays more of one then the other. So if I see you on the river and give you the stink eye, don’t take it personally I’m probably just lost in my head somewhere. I might be pondering why a salmon on its way to die would eat my fly? It’s a good question. But then again who cares, if the fish will eat then it is good sport. And if you get a Coho salmon to eat then you’ve got yourself a good dinner, and a little good old fashion fun. Fish more, Catch more. 12 UPSTATE NEW YORK

Troutfitters Five Deadly Steelhead Flies I
f you’ve thought about trying one of upstate NY’s many Steelhead or eggs off the bottom can try stripping a bugger or better yet an egg waters with a fly rod but aren’t sure where to start........ Here are five sucking leach. Where intruder fly’s tend to perform better swung time tested flies that will get you results. through current on a tight line, buggers and leeches can be stripped at various speeds and depths and are easier to fish at close range. Estaz Egg’s ....... egg patterns of all types take Steelhead throughout the Mouse......... For those who dream of explosive takes and love surface season in most Lake Ontario tributaries. In the fall, however, they are action! Fishing a mouse pattern, or any surface pattern, for steelhead particularly effective, as many Steelhead follow the Salmon into rivers is a low percentage play on all but a few days of the year, but who can and creeks to gorge themselves on Eggs. The Estaz egg is tough to beat resist. Twitching a mouse across the head of your favorite riffle at first during this period, the length of the estaz may be increased on some light is something everyone should try, at least once. The reward may be flies to give the appearance of multiple eggs. In addition a small amount a hook up you will remember for many years. of milky veil can be added to imitate the natural decay present in many of the real eggs. Black Stone Fly Nymph........ As the season progresses the water cools and the fish tend to become less active. While fish can still be taken on eggs they also tend to adapt to life in the river and begin to focus on the food sources available in their particular stream. For most area waters, Stone fly’s are one of the most common of those sources. The Salmon River enjoys a healthy black stone fly population and the fish learn quickly to eat them. Nymph’s in sizes 8-12 are most common but may vary depending on the water your fishing. Intruder.......... For those who prefer to swing flies there is an endless array of baitfish imitations and other streamer patterns that can be effective. Many steelhead fisherman have moved into two handed rods and these set ups are ideal for this type of fly. The intruder was developed on the west coast but has proven to be very successful for great lakes steelhead as well. Sparsely dressed, many intruder type flies don’t look Perfection!! The profile and motion once in the current however make these flies tough for fish to resist, especially when the water temps are up in the fall and spring. Egg sucking leech....... CHARLIE WARFIELD’S WEST CANADA CREEK STREAM REPORT I’m sitting here at the computer on October 15th. The end of the normal trout season here in NY. And over all it has been a good year for trout. The fall has been beautiful… But dry, other than that this year has been stellar. Now of course there are still options for trout fishing into the winter. All “trophy section waters” are open year round as well as some other creeks and rivers. The WCC has a Trophy section that is a good place to fish during the fall. This is the time to fish streamers, so tie on something meaty and hold on. I like black, Olive, and Natural colors with some orange accents (see Sparkle Bunny Bait on page __) The key to streamer fishing is always cover a lot of water, sometimes that can be hard some sections of the WCC so the fall is the perfect time to try drifting this big creek, no drift boat needed a canoe will work just fine. You can also nymph fish this time of year, things to try would be Stone flies, midges, worm patterns, and caddis. If you’re fishing with a companion try having one person streamer fish and the other nymph fish, until you find what is working best. As always be safe, and check the flows before you go call 1-800-452-1742 for the latest flow rates. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

Season’s End By Mark Usyk
H
Mark Usyk is a self-labeled fly-fishing fanatic and Adirondack explorer
ere it is, the end of trout season only days away, and I couldn’t find a single person to make the near two hour drive up here with me. They all scoffed at the idea. “The salmon are just starting their runs and you want to go ride almost two hours up to some little stream trickling through the woods where you’re gonna catch fish that are only six or seven inches long?” I give a sideways grin. “They can be bigger” I shoot back, “Sometimes ten or eleven inches if you’re lucky.” Then they’d be lost to the thoughts of bigger fish. They’d tell me I was crazy and then start talking about rigging up big rods and getting there early to get a good spot on the river before the crowd really got bad and about how the salmon really don’t hardly ever actually eat. But that you weren’t snagging them either, you were simply hoping to line them across their mouth to set a hook in it that happened to have a fly on it. And that’s about where they’d lose me. Actually they’d lost me when they started questioning my motives of remote streams and little trout. But it didn’t matter, I was simply asking if they wanted to go out of common courtesy. Going alone had always been my hope. On the stream I find myself standing knee deep in the water, half ducking behind a boulder the size of my living room couch, feeling nearly just as comfortable as if I actually was at home on the couch. I’m trying to get a good look at the run I’m about to cast to without spooking the little brookies that I figure
have to be in it. Up here when a spot looks this fishy, I’ve found that it usually is. It’s really something when you think about it all. Twenty years ago the PH levels in these waters were so low that you would’ve been hard pressed to find much life in them at all. Rolling over rocks wouldn’t have shown you much bug life, crayfish would have been nowhere to be found, and in turn, brook trout were probably scarce at best. These waters haven’t been stocked since the ‘60s, but now that the acid rain damage is healing here they are, shooting out from around boulders, darting from pocket waters, and zipping across pools to chase down the streamer on the end of my 3wt. I wonder where they went when the waters got so bad, if most died off and these are the descendants of the hardiest that toughed it out or if they all moved farther upstream, somewhere we never went to look for them, like hermits retreating from a cruel and strange world and only now repopulating the waters after they became healthy again. There’s always the possibility that some water somewhere else was stocked and some of those fish made their way here, but it doesn’t matter. They’re wild now. The four inch brookie I caught first thing proves that. I make a cast from behind the couch sized rock. The little black and gray streamer hits the water with a dull slap above another boulder across from me and I strip line fast as the current carries it past. I never see where the fish comes from, but the line goes

tight and thin graphite bends, the line cuts the water in zig zags and I end up with a brightly colored brook trout maybe seven or eight inches. A burnt orange underside and flanks with parr marks scattered with spots, the blue halos around red are the most impressive. It rests on the bottom next to my boot but regains its strength quickly. It shoots off into the current and disappears. I manage one more from the spot before I move along. Hopping from boulder to boulder in some places, pushing quietly through waist tall ferns beginning to lose their green to fall in others, I can’t help but be distracted from the fishing by the almost complete quiet. Except for the sound of the riffles of tail outs, the wind every now and then that sways the top of a tall pine, or the scratching of leaves as they fall through the branches to the ground or to the current where they’re carried away downstream, there’s no sound. Just me and the woods and the trout. I haven’t seen so much as another boot print since I left the Jeep parked on a dirt road, but I did see tracks left by a bear where it crossed the stream and walked out on a gravel bar, and deer tracks on the game
trail I use to skirt the edges of the water now and then. I haven’t seen any moose tracks this time but I know they’re around. No trash, no fishing line tangled in tree branches hanging over the middle of the water anywhere, no worm containers. No Styrofoam coffee cups left on the bank. I make my way out and around a massive chunk of bed rock that chokes off more than half the width of the stream and on the other side of it I find yet another fishy looking spot, so of course I cast. And I again feel life on the other end, the rod arches, the tip dances, and in the end I quietly release another colored up brook trout, this one probably close to eleven inches long, a trophy on a stream like this. Why would I want to come all the way up here for these little fish when I could be fighting salmon, or other fisherman for three feet of river bank? There’s no doubt I’d catch bigger fish there, and harder fighters. But it’s quite possible that it’s not just the fish I’m after, but where I go to find them being equally important. My one hope being that the salmon circus crowd never catches on to my secret.

ONEIDA LAKE REPORT BY MICKY’S BAIT & TACKLE Fortunate is the individual who has not removed there boat from Oneida Lake yet. If you are an Oneida Lake angler, then by the time you read this your freezer should contain an ample amount of perch and wally fillets. Perch can be had just about anywhere on the lake in depths from five to twenty five feet. Drop shotting with fathead minnows is popular. Don’t overlook using small 1/32 to 1/8 oz jigs tipped with spikes; This makes a nice rig especially with a small bobber during calm water conditions. Try color combinations of chartruse, orange and purple. A nice thing about the Oneida Lake Fall bite for perch, bass
and walleye is that in many cases having a boat is not necessary. Fishing from shore can be quite productive this time of year. Popular shore spots include Chapman Park on the south shore, the pier at Brewerton and the pier at Sylvan Beach. North Shore anglers can fish from shore at Godfrey Point. All these locations offer public access. Walleye fishing off shore during evening hours, utilizing stick baits or twister tail jigs, can go on till the snow starts flying in December. Remember, slow retrieving is always best. During the daylight hours try casting shallow diving crank baits from shore for bass. Or you can take the gloves off and use live shiners under a bobber or drift them.

Even though many boats have been put away for the year, it hasn’t stopped many of our regulars from catching nice, beautifully colored fish. Our regulars, and employees at Fish307 have been nailing some beautiful landlocked salmon from the break walls right in the village of Lake George. The most consistent method has been fly casting using bead head prince nymphs or tandem streamers such as Joe’s smelt orange. For those who still have a boat available, trolling the in-close shoreline with streamers or spoons, such as Mooselock or Speedy Shiners in orange/black or silver blue should put you in position to score. Lake trout should be moving to spawning grounds soon, but 60-100 feet has been the best depth. Bass have been found deeper in 35-40 feet of water with live shiners, Senco or Kitechs being your best choice. Some perch schools have been spotted cruising by the breakwalls, so they could produce a tasty meal on small minnows or worms. On Dec.17, a Saturday morning at 8am, Fish307 will be holding our 7th Annual IceFishing Open Seminar. This is a great forum to learn about new products and tactics for the upcoming ice-fishing season. Factory reps will be on hand to provide you firsthand knowledge to help your trips on the ice more productive this season. We sharpen and repair augers also.

Lake Champlain’s Salmon By Rick Redman
P
Rick Redman is Chapter President of the Champlain Trout Unlimited and a fly fishing guide
ond and lake fishermen have been enjoying the bounty this year due to the drought. When the rivers run low, you must go with the alternatives. If you are a stream guy like me, you are considering buying a boat. Mother Nature has not been good to New York State this year. Rainfall is well below average and stream flows are almost nonexistent in many small tributaries. The larger rivers are running low with its gravel bars and shorelines exposed to the sun. As a result, they are now sprouting vegetation. Hidden gravel bars are now islands. The suns thermal powers have warmed the waters and sent what river life there was, deep into the recesses of the stream. Deep pools and spring fed thermal areas were holding the fish. Now that fall is upon us, the cooler nights have brought the water temps down, but the river flows remain low. The fish are still hunkered down. We need a good shot of rain to get the fish moving once again. Salmon will be coming up Champlain’s main New York rivers, the Boquet, Ausable and Saranac any time now, but the low flows and water temps have delayed there departure times. The Boquet River in Willsboro was damned up until the summer of 2015. A fish ladder was built in 1980 to allow fish passage, but with the leaks in the dam, the salmon were fooled by the water flows and very few actually used the ladder. Now with the dam no longer stopping the migration, the fish may be able to reach the upper areas such as the North Branch. A good flow of water will enhance their ability to climb the rapids and falls where the dam once stood. NYS DEC will be having a creel survey on the Boquet River in Willsboro this fall. The creel survey is being conducted primarily by Zach Eisenhower of the USFWS. Biologists are trying to get an idea of the amount of landlocked salmon fishing effort and the catch and harvest of LLS. The creel survey will be done on virtually all weekend days and two weekdays each week now thru into November. The survey will consist of three separate counts of anglers, with interviews of anglers between the counts according to DEC fisheries biologist, Lance Durfey. The Ausable River allows salmon to spawn as far as the Ausable Chasm, which is the natural barrier. Private property and posted signs limit access. Fishing near the Route 9 Bridge and the mouth of the river by the Ausable Point State campground with a boat, may be your only choices on this lower reach of river. The last of New York’s main Lake Champlain tributaries is the Saranac River in Plattsburgh. The water temperatures on the Saranac, the first week of October were hovering around 62 degrees during midday. The majority of fishermen seem to pod and stack up along the mouth of the river, downstream of the railroad bridge when the run is 20 UPSTATE NEW YORK

on. Here the river is wider and there is room to move. Access along the river farther upstream is limited by Plattsburgh State University. The river is not posted, but parking on campus is for students with parking stickers. If you park on campus, you will get a ticket. Remember, the State is always looking for income money! You need to park off campus and hoof it to the river. Above the college there is access by the old Imperial Mill Dam, the unnatural barrier that prohibits Salmon from advancing their natal migratory pattern. Trout Unlimited’s Lake Champlain Chapter has been working to get the dam removed, but it has been a monumental and timely fight. The dam is no longer used for power and has been deemed unsafe. Like a bad tooth, it should go! We need a united stand of trout and salmon fishermen to stand up and fight for the dam’s removal, so get involved! As the saying goes, “Those who attend the meetings, make the rules that those who do not attend must follow”. Speaking of rules, as a word of caution, check the NYS DEC fishing guide on these rivers. There are special regulations! Snagging, lifting and even added weight on flies are not allowed. Read the guide! Two fellows from the Plattsburgh area found out the hard way last year. They got blown in by a fellow fisherman with a cell phone’s camera. They paid the price! Good sportsman’s conduct and ethics are encouraged and stressed by fellow Lake Champlain rivers fishermen. If you can’t pay the fine, don’t do the snagging crime! The flows of the Boquet, Ausable and Saranac Rivers, along with their tribs are extremely low at the time I write this; early October. Both trout and salmon are affected by higher than average water temps and low flows. The cooler nights have finally lowered the stream temperatures so trout are in deep pools and nearby pockets. Normally I wouldn’t be excited about a hurricane forecast coming up the coast. Lately though, I have been hoping a storm would come in and drop four or five inches of rain on our area over a weeks’ time. We don’t need a gully washer, just a steady week long rain to get the rivers back up to bank full levels. Wells are drying up, tributaries are moist and river flows are reducing the natural migration of Salmon to spawn when they normally would. I have heard of one salmon being caught so far, and there probably are more, but the Salmon Run, is more of a crawl right now. You may need to delay your stream fishing trip just a bit this year. The migratory urge will make the fish come up the river, but they won’t stay long. When the rains come, things will change overnight. We will be back into fishing the streams bounty. But for now, think lakes and ponds. Anybody have a good boat for sale?

LAKE CHAMPLAIN REPORT BY CAPTAIN MICK MAYNARD Open water fishing on Lake Champlain will continue to be prime for two particular target species through November, and even into December if warm trends continue. Jigging for smallmouth bass started slow with warmer than usual water temperatures, but this should make November even better when cooler weather finally sets in. Fishing at this time of year can be very rewarding, especially when light winds prevail. Check our website to see the amazing quality of the bass you can expect to catch in late fall. The bass are big and hard bellied at this time of year and they’re often stacked up like cordwood. The Atlantic salmon bite has also been exceptional and will continue to be until ice blocks open water access. Last winter angler’s trolled for salmon throughout the winter months and fishing was phenomenal. There is a healthy young of the year class of peanut alewives present in many locations and salmon are feeding heavily on them. With little water in the tributaries fewer fish have made their way up spawning runs, but there are still some determined fish present for fly and spin fishermen. Angler’s bringing boats to Lake Champlain should use caution when launching and navigating in the extreme low water conditions we’re currently experiencing. A normal or above average snowfall is desperately needed to bring the lake back to more typical levels.

TAMARACK CAFÉ 4TH LAKE/OLD FORGE FISHING REPORT BY BRANDON It has been a beautiful fall up here in the ADKs, and we thank everyone for coming up to visit our wonderful area. The ample sunshine this fall made all the colors just seem brighter. To me, one the most beautiful objects that nature brings us is our fish, particularly the landlocked salmon and the brook trout. They just are so darn beautiful, and during fall, mother nature does her magic and colors these fish up so majestically. Landlocks are now readily available in any of the tributaries flushing into the Fulton Chain. Unfortunately, we haven’t had much rain, so any added precipitation will certainly increase the amount of fish in the streams. Most of the fish that are present now are in the 15-18 inch range and I anticipate bigger fish will increase with hopefully rising water and lower water temperatures. My favorite presentation for these aerial acrobats are flies. Though egg sacks, worms, or spinners can do the trick, I found nothing to be more successful than flies. I particularly am fond of flies with orange and/or pink in them. There are huge landlocks present in these waters, I’ve seen them and have caught my share in the 28-32 inch range, which is a true trophy. My goal is to take a state record from here. The current record is 24 lbs. and I have seen fish present here in that class. This year was fantastic for our pond brook trout fishing. If you are used to only catching small brookies measured in the inches, we have ponds that regularly produce fish in the 2-3 lb. range. These fish need to be worked for and the more remote ponds usually produce the best results. raveling across the country for the last three years with the Bassmaster Elite Series has led me to some amazing fishing destinations. I’ve been about as far as one can go in every direction in the United States and have gotten to experience some great fishing. Although I don’t have a definitive answer on where my favorite place to fish is, I will say that without a doubt my favorite fish to target are big northern smallmouth bass. Let’s talk about some of the places I’ve been and what makes the places and the
Lakes. My next experience with northern smallies was on the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York. The Thousand Islands area is a beautiful part of the country and should be on every bass fisherman’s bucket list. The river is full of fish, and a lot of people there seem to fish more for other species so the smallmouth are quite catchable. A little ways away on Lake Ontario is the home of more willing smallmouth. Next on the list is Lake St. Clair in Michigan. St. Clair is

fisheries so special. My very first experience with the Great Lakes was at the Elite Series AOY championship in 2014 in Escanaba, Mich. I ended up finishing that tournament in ninth place and qualified for my first Bassmaster Classic. I was super impressed with the place as soon as I rolled into town. Everyone in Escanaba was very nice and hospitable, which is something you don’t find everywhere these days. It is a nice quiet town much like the Tennessee town I was raised in, with great places to eat and nice places to stay. As far as the fishery, just take a look at the weights from that tournament and they will speak for themselves. Little Bay and Big Bay de Noc are chock-full of big smallmouth as well as walleye, pike, perch and everything else you would expect to find in the Great
unique because you can either fish in the lake, which is great, or you can fish one of the rivers that flows into or out of the lake, which is what I chose to do when I was there. In all these places, smallmouth bass will absolutely chew a small soft plastic bait on a Mustad dropshot hook fished on a MHX EPS 81MLXF rod from Mud Hole Custom Tackle. Catching these fish requires good electronics, so I rely heavily on my Raymarine units to locate the big schools. As I was writing this last week, I got thinking I needed to go and pay those smallmouth a visit. My dad and I jumped in the car, drove to Lake Michigan and had a ball. I would encourage you to do the same before it gets too cold!

here’s stocking trout, and then there’s unintentionally releasing 80,000 rainbow trout into the open ocean. In the short-term, recreational anglers will be the beneficiaries of a $1.5 million accident at a Danish fish farm. Reuters reports that a cargo vessel collided with fish farm nets between Danish Islands in the Baltic Sea on Oct. 11. The fish, which were bound for the slaughterhouse within a few days’ time, weighed about 6.6 pounds each. Recreational anglers are being encouraged to get out on the fjord and catch as many of the escapees as possible. Authorities are concerned the jailbreak could have disastrous consequences for the native sea-run rainbow trout populations. According to the Associated Press report, wild populations are preparing to run up the rivers to spawn right now, and their eggs would make tasty morsels for the farmed fish. Other Danish biologists have dismissed the threat as minimal because the farmed trout are unprepared for life in the wild and are conditioned to heavy feedings. There is a good chance the fish will die of starvation or be consumed by larger predators before they are able to do much damage. One thing is for sure, if there are Walmarts in Denmark, the shelves will be emptied of spinners, salmon eggs, Powerbait and canned corn. There isn’t a stocked trout in the world that can resist Green Giant Niblets.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT PIRANA FISHING LURES With its patented Jet Trail System, Pirana Fishing Lures has given the fishing world one of those “why didn’t someone think of this before” moments. Pirana has taken proven elements of highly successful crankbaits and jerkbaits and given them a new feature that is the most innovative and effective to hit the market in years. These lures leave a bubble trail, an enticement that draws in predatory fish and triggers them to strike. The effectiveness of bubble trails is well documented. Bluewater anglers troll jet head lures. Bass anglers fish gurglers and buzzbaits. Pirana’s Jet Trail System brings the same concept to crankbaits and jerkbaits. With an open mouth and gill slots along the lure’s sides, water is forced through the lure on retrieve to create the jet trail. Pirana has also put a lot into the details. These lures have a finely tuned wobble and dive as well as a rattle chamber for additional noise. Bright red gills, holographic silver eyes, a hex-scale pattern and a high-gloss finish complete the package. The lasting trail of bubbles, however, is what sets them apart. Pirana’s latest, which should hit the market soon, is the new and improved P200, which has a lip above the mouth opening. Whether the target species are redfish, seatrout and snook inshore or largemouth and smallmouth bass or trout in freshwater, anything that will eat a plug will be more likely to eat one with a jet trail. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT UNDERWATER FISH LIGHT If you live on the water or have ever cruised any local canals or shorelines at night, you’ve probably seen how effective and widespread Underwater Fish Light’s products are. They seem to be just about everywhere, and are almost always loaded with fish. Their classic Natural Green lights look amazing in any waterway, but they recently released a new line of Vibrant Green underwater lights that illuminate the water with a richer green color that really stands out from the crowd. In addition to the unique look, these lights are also 50 percent brighter than the classic systems and are perfect for those looking to “out glow” their neighbors. Of course these new lights come backed by the same guarantees that Underwater Fish Light is famous for, including their well known “Fish Guaranteed or Your Money Back” promise. You can try the new Vibrant Green systems or any of their other models for sixty nights in your own waterway, and if you’re not thrilled with the performance of the light, you can return it for a full refund. Obviously they don’t get too many returns. There is also a new line of Caribbean Blue underwater lights that look incredible in clear waterways, but customers outside of the Florida Keys should opt for either the Natural Green or Vibrant Green, as these will look the best in murkier waters. With a 3-year warranty and money back guarantee, you can’t go wrong with Underwater Fish Light. Visit them online at www.FishLight.com or call 1-855-FISH-LIGHT for more information.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT INHIBITOR VCI PRO CHIPS FOR CORROSION PROTECTION Protecting your fishing gear from rust and corrosion has never been easier, or more effective. The Inhibitor VCI offers unrivaled corrosion and rust prevention to protect lures, hooks, reels and more. Fishing tackle is a magnet for rust and corrosion. Many people do not fully appreciate the money and time avid anglers put into building their collection of lures. Rust will damage hooks, split rings and the body of the lure. With VCI Pro Chips you can make sure you never lose any of your fishing equipment to rust. Saltwater speeds up rust and corrosion; protect your fishing tackle from saltwater. Inhibitor VCI Pro Chips are a safe, easy and economical way to ensure your fishing tackle, tool boxes, small part bins and any other small metal items stay rust free. Each chip is treated on both sides with Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors that release a non-toxic vapor to blend with moisture and oxygen and stop rust and corrosion. The special vapors penetrate into the smallest cracks or crevices, providing total protection in marine environments. There is no scent residue. Fish will never know you are rust free! With Inhibitor rust prevention products, even saltwater cannot cause your fishing tackle to rust or corrode. They are great for parts bins and tool boxes at home, too. It works on all ferrous and non-ferrous metals: brass, bronze, copper, aluminum, steel, and stainless steel. Visit www.theinhibitor.com to get your 20-pack of VCI Pro Chips for only $5.99.
