By CAM Staff A truck load of kayaks from Confluence Outdoors was overnighted to Texas for use in water rescues.
I
t was an historic hurricane season. With Harvey battering the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and Irma strafing the length of Florida, damage from high winds and flooding was catastrophic. It is in such trying times that the American spirit shines. Harvey slammed ashore near Rockport, Texas on Aug. 25 and stalled out over southeast Texas, dropping up to 52 inches of rain over the next five days. The flooding was cataclysmic. Major highways turned to rivers and much of the Houston area was under water. Even as floodwaters rose, lines began forming on the sides of the highway. These were volunteers headed into the deluge to launch boats from freeway off-ramps. It looked like the launch line for the world’s largest fishing tournament. It was a proud moment for the fishing community. Anglers from all over the region rushed to the rescue pulling bass boats, jonboats and skiffs. Dubbed the Cajun Navy, this rag-tag bunch of heroes— along with official emergency response—conducted thousands of water recues. And response from the fishing and boating industries was strong as well. The following are few examples of how the fishing industry stepped in with a helping hand. Confluence Outdoors leaped into action as the magnitude of the flooding became clear. They overnighted a semi-truck load of Wilderness Systems and Perception kayaks to Houston. The boats, as well as paddles and PFDs provided by Confluence, were used in high-water rescue by Houston authorities. Honda went to work moving needed products like generators and water pumps to affected areas. And while Honda dealers went to work in rescue efforts, Honda Marine went to work making sure those dealers were stocked up to serve their communities with vital equipment. Additionally, Honda pledged $100,000 to the American Red Cross. The pledge will consist of a corporate contribution as well as a dollar-for-dollar matching gift program for Honda associate contributions. Evinrude immediately donated a boat and motor to a volunteer fire department in Lockport, Texas. The second phase of their relief effort was to deploy a wave of engines to area boatbuilders as well as food and clothing. Evinrude also agreed to match dollar-for-dollar donations to the American Red Cross made by employees. Suzuki, through its Texas dealers, donated boats, motors, ATVs and time to the rescue efforts. In addition, Suzuki provided two outboards to rescue efforts for Carolina Skiff boats that were on their way to Ron Hoover Marine, which has multiple locations in the affected area. Orvis recognized an immediate need for rain gear and wading gear. As well as supplying as many as they could, Orvis put the call out for individuals to ship waders, boots and rain jackets to the San Antonio Orvis location for distribution to rescue personnel. Platypus Fishing Line pledged to donate 100 percent of its website profits in September to the Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. The storms and damage from this season’s hurricanes were enormous, and so was the outpouring of support. As anglers and boaters, we should be proud of the response from our community.

Fly Fishing GEAR
Simms G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader
Goat Head Spool Clips
Without sacrificing durability, Simms’ has constructed its most comfortable, best fitting and most breathable wader in the new G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader. The G3 Guide was awarded Best Fly Fishing Accessory at ICAST 2017. Constructed with 4-layer GORE-TEX Pro Shell fabric in the legs and three-layer in the upper, this wader concentrates durability where it is needed most while providing added breathability. It takes comfort and mobility to a new level. The wader comes equipped with a chest pocket, removable flip-out Tippet Tender , hand-warmer pockets, integrated utility tabs and also features Simms’ patented front and back leg seams, gravel guards, and suspenders with opposing YKK buckles that allow for a waist-high conversion. It is available in models for men and women.
How many times have your clunky old tippet caddies gotten tangled in the bushes or hung up in slack line? Goat Head Spool Clips are an ingenious new way to carry spools of tippets more securely. Their simple and compact design keeps your spools handy yet out of the way at the same time. A single Spool Clip will hold two standard tippet spools and fits securely to most nylon straps. Spool Clips are made in the U.S.A. from 100 percent recycled plastic. They are simple, rugged, compact, versatile and always ready when you need them.

Douglas Argus Reel There is no denying the beauty and simplicity of a clickcheck reel. Without the advantage of a disc drag, the angler is more in touch with the fish and fights are more fun. The Douglas Argus Fly Reel is a fine looking click-check reel that gets you closer to the fish. It is a shared legacy between longtime anglers and the next demanding generation. On one hand, it is a beautiful reel. On the other, there is no undue advantage given to the angler. Reel includes a twilled pouch. It is made in Upstate New York out of machined bar stock 6061 aircraft aluminum with a standard arbor, and reversible click check with rim-positioned adjustment. The rim is laser textured for palming. The reel seat is constructed of marine brass.

Arc 99+ Fly Line
There is a famous quote by Wyatt Earp, “Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.” In fly fishing, accuracy is everything. The difference between success and failure is often measured in inches. All modern fly rods are powerful, but accuracy is the new frontier in design. Making an 80-foot cast in saltwater is prospecting. Making a forty-foot cast on the nose of a laid-up tarpon is fishing. The H3 brings a fundamental shift from flex profiles to a new frontier in accuracy and purpose-driven design. Helios 3F and 3D each offer uncompromising purpose. 3F is accuracy with finesse, a dry fly angler’s dream. 3D is accuracy with power at distance for pinpoint delivery of larger flies. The difference is taper and stiffness, but the design foundation of accuracy remains constant. The H3 is the pinnacle of purpose, designed to master the moment and meet the demands of accuracy on a spring creek with a 3F or a tarpon flat with a 3D.
www.orvis.com
Designed for today’s faster action fly rods, the ARC 99+ is a half line size heavier and features a more condensed taper than standard true-to-size fly lines. This additional weight and specialized taper design loads fast action rods easier, resulting in longer, more accurate casts. Built around our 6 percent low-stretch Response Core, the ARC 99+ incorporates the latest advancements in fly line design, including transition zones, a super high floating permanent Nano PTFE coating and a low-friction, grooved line profile. We call this ZNG Technology. This makes the ARC 99+ one of the longest casting, highest floating and easiest mending fly lines on the market today. 10

ur grandfathers used old-school bamboo fly rods to create some of the greatest fishing stories of all time. That most of these stories took place on famous trout streams still influences what people think about bamboo’s place in fly fishing. Caleb Turner, of Turner Bamboo Fly Rods, has a different take on bamboo rods in the modern world. “Bamboo has a special place in the very heart of fly fishing, from the great western streams to the small streams of the Appalachians, but they don’t come to mind when people are talking the salt flats,” Caleb said. According to the Turners, there’s a misconception that there are no fast action bamboo fly rods, and that only the fastest action rods can be used in saltwater. Most rod makers and bamboo enthusiasts know this isn’t only untrue… it isn’t even the point.
“The feel found in bamboo rods is often confused with action for people picking up a bamboo rod for the first time,” Caleb said. “When they feel the action in the rod, they often over accelerate their forward cast causing them to lose energy in the line.” Caleb’s recommendation is to let the rod do the work, and to concentrate on technique. “It’s easier to feel when the rod is loaded with bamboo, and this really comes more into play for us on the flats than trout streams,” he said. What the Turners do differently than most other bamboo rod makers is cater to saltwater fly fishing. They are located in Mississippi right next to some of the most technical redfish flats on the Gulf Coast. “We design our saltwater fly rods with a fast action for stiff winds and quick-moving redfish that spook way more easily than their Louisiana counterparts,” Caleb said. With water the same color as the redfish, wind, and the need to have eyes of an Osprey, fly fishing the Mississippi Gulf Coast is more like bonefishing. “Bamboo gives us the action we need, the feel we need, and it’s able to load up at short distances but also extend a long cast to extremely wary redfish found around here.” Caleb said. “Tonkin cane grows in a 30-square-kilometer area in the Orient’s Sui River Valley. It is praised as the strongest species of bamboo with the greatest thickness of power fibers. These power fibers are what give bamboo rods what they have more than other material used in crafting fly rods, their touch. Despite what action you desire, bamboo rods offer a certain touch you just can’t get with anything else. If a rod is designed correctly, you can have all the action you need and still have that great feel. The rod lets you know when it’s loaded instead of having to figure out the timing for that individual rod.” In short, bamboo fly rods definitely have their place in modern performing fly rods. Accuracy, touch and presentation are things bamboo rod makers strive for in crafting their rods. If you get a hold of a quality rod, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by all the things it can do. For more information on bamboo fly rods or Turner Bamboo Fly Rods visit www.turnerflyrods.com or email caleb@turnerflyrods.com.

was a dime-bright fish of only 6 or so iK e pounds that still had the power to get j o s, Ic the reel deep into its backing. There is no better way to begin a fishing journey than when it all comes together early on. We knew we would be experiencing yet another trip of a lifetime. With the sun only slightly hitting the horizon and a brief glimpse of darkness for what seems like only minutes, the days are filled with subtle takes of the fly, followed by sips of Brennivin, cast and repeat. We ended the trip in the same fashion as it started. Another sleek salmon peels line and leaps. At the end of the run, Raven dips the net and we release the fish to bid farewell for what is hopefully only another year until we return. With Raven being the pilot, Brian, Kyle and I explored areas that have been experienced by few. Targeting trophy fish in such a landscape with close friends only solidifies the need for one to explore, be bewildered and experience life events that shape you as a person. Iceland will leave your soul fulfilled but still wanting more.

asting into a pool where fish leap and dragons rise brings emotions that cannot be found in many places. From the etched lava landscape to the clean cold water, Iceland offers anglers a backdrop to a story that will always begin with the statement, “It was the trip of a lifetime.” With three trips in three consecutive years, I can use the all-too cliché fishing phrase, “I am hooked” on Iceland. Page after page can be written about the acrobatic Atlantic salmon, the headstrong pull of a sea-run brown trout, the rocky canyons, waterfalls, and the art of fishing a hitched tube-fly. There is so much that pulls an angler to Icelandic rivers. For the past three years, I have spent the end of July fishing the Laxa i Kjos, a smaller river in southwestern Iceland about an hour from the capital city, Reykjavik. The river allows an angler to experience much of what Icelandic topography has to offer. From the large pools in the coastal beats, where an angler can’t help but stare out toward the Atlantic Ocean, to the meandering turns of the pastoral meadow sections, and deep narrow-cut canyons that carve the hillside until you reach Thorufoss, the impassable falls, home to a famous scene from the popular series “Game of Thrones.” The landscape, at least to me, is secondary to those that accompany you on the journey. On this year’s trip, I was fortunate enough to return to the river with good friends: Brian, who has made the trip with me before; Kyle, a friend who would be experiencing this fabled land for the first time; and our guide Hrafn (Raven), who brings an entire new appreciation to the fly fishing guide world with a persona that is somewhat mythical, just like the waters we were wading in. Arriving in Iceland, most anglers have aspirations of watching a tube fly skate across the surface of crystal waters, witnessing the careful eat of the fly and the line going tight with the initial run of one of the fly world’s most sought after quarry, an Atlantic salmon. We were fortunate enough to be those anglers. The first fish of the trip was caught soon after arrival. It

If I note the fish are not right on the bottom with my Raymarine units, I make my leader up to 20 inches long so it sits right in their face. The rod I build for the drop shot is the MHX EPS-81MLXF. It is a 6’9” medium-light power with an extra-fast tip. I spool it with 10-pound Vicious No-Fade braid and an 8-pound fluorocarbon leader. I prefer a wacky-rigged, 6” MB Fat Finesse Worm from X-Zone, using a 1/4 to 3/8 drop shot weight and a Mustad Titan-X Wacky Neko hook. If the water has at least a couple feet of visibility, you can save yourself some time by utilizing an underwater camera. Knowing the fish down there are bass and not catfish really helps. This year I switched over to an Aqua Vu camera that displays on my Raymarine unit. Seeing is believing, let me tell you!
ome late summer, you just don’t see megaschools on the offshore ledges and dropoffs. The fish have been pounded on all summer, and with a few cooler nights the fish will head to grass, schooling on top and chasing shad. What were once 50-fish schools might now just be eight to 10 fish. These fish can be hard to catch, but as the numbers of deep fishermen dwindle, the more apt the fish will be to bite. The community holes are the places to begin looking. Community holes earn that reputation because fish live there. It is rare for all the fish from a mega-school to up and leave, so chances are you’ll still be able to catch a few. If they’re not right on the main part of the community hole, look for transition areas leading to where the shad will be in fall. A lot of times you just have to get out there with the graph and hunt for them. You can also fish for them. There are random groups of fish scattered up and down ledges. Anglers who spend a lot of time graphing will miss these roaming fish. While covering water by moving down a ledge, you are likely to run into some. If I am able to locate a small school with my electronics, my first choice is a 12-inch worm Texas rigged on a ½-ounce weight. I use 14- to 17-pound Vicious fluorocarbon. I enjoy this technique so much that I helped design the perfect hook for it. The Mustad 2X Big Bite hook in 5/0 or 6/0 is perfect for a 12-inch worm. It has a longer shank, which helps with hook-up percentage. I’ve found it is also the perfect hook for my X-Zone Center Stick. I use the MHX EPS-86MHF baitcast rod from Mud Hole Custom Tackle. It is a 7’ 2”, medium-heavy power. It took me an hour and forty-five minutes to build this rod. It is easy and fun to Get more tips from Lester at knock them out. A ½-ounce War Eagle jigging spoon and a big crankbait like a Strike King 6XD will be the other baits I’ll throw. And you can Airline_CoastalAnglerAd_3-2016_Layout 1 3/18/16 1:07 PM Page 1

Follow The Bait For Fall Bass
By TAM Staff • Photo courtesy of Jake Davis
T
he days are shorter. The nights are cooler. Cold fronts are sweeping in, and bass are in the transition that brings some of the best fishing of the year. For tournament anglers or weekend warriors, the fall feed-up is one of the most exciting times to be on the water. Whether it’s a large reservoir or the backyard bass pond, fish are on the move. They’ve left the deep-water structure where they were schooled up all summer, and they’re tailing baitfish into the creeks and shallows. Catching bass right now is less about patterning structure and more about finding bait than it is at any other time of year. Of course baitfish, even on the move, will often relate to some type of structure or cover. Fall fishing is very similar to what you’ll find in the spring for bass that are in pre- and post-spawn patterns. The bass and baitfish use the same channels and ledges to migrate as they did in spring. On the big lakes, you’ll find them by graphing the mouths of the creeks and then moving in as the fish progress back to the secondary points and finally the backs of the creeks. On a pond, go where you see the bait. It could be on that prominent drop off the flats or just off the creek channel. The key here is finding the shad, or
whatever the dominant bait species is where you fish. Bass have one thing in mind, and that is to pack on as much weight as possible. They’ll require energy for the cold months ahead and to fuel the production of eggs and sperm for the spawn on the other end of winter. It’s a fun time of year to fish. Get on the trolling motor or walk the banks with your favorite fast-moving baits. You can cover a lot of water with crankbaits, spinnerbaits and even buzzbaits to prospect available cover like docks, laydowns, brush and stumps. Or maybe the bait is up in the grass. There’s nothing more fun than working a swim jig or fluke in and along the grass edges. No matter what you do, keep your favorite jerkbait, topwater walking bait or swimbait easily accessible. When fleeing baitfish scatter around a cove and bass are busting on top, you’ll want to have something you can throw a long way to put yourself in the action. There’s no secret to patterning bass this time of year. Find the baitfish, and the predatory fish will be with them. This is generally not a time to slow down and dissect structure. Fan casting an area that is holding baitfish can result in fast action.

Register Named Marine Fisheries Officer of the Year If you ask Bill Register, he’ll tell you he doesn’t like the limelight, so he is a little bashful that his colleagues nominated him for Marine Fisheries Enforcement Officer of the Year. “It makes me feel good that they think a lot of me,” Register said, “But me, myself, I don’t think I’ve done anything more to get it – I see other guys I think do more.” Nevertheless, Register received the award Sept. 9 at the 54th Annual Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards Banquet in Cary. And there were accolades for the many things he has done. A former Navy Seal, Register was instrumental in developing and implementing a water survival course for Marine Patrol, N.C. Wildlife and N.C. Marine Fisheries employees. But he is humble about this contribution. “It was a joint effort for all of us,” Register said. He has taught other courses, too, such as cold weather shooting and firearms training. He has assisted other instructors with training new hires in pepper spray use, and he has taught several annual in-service training sessions. When he is not training, he is patrolling the heavily-fished coastal waters of New Hanover County, enforcing size and creel limits and other fishing regulations, monitoring polluted areas and nursery areas for illegal activity, and performing dealer and license inspections and boating safety inspections. Register said it is one of the best law enforcement jobs you can have because 90 percent of it is proactively educating the public. “We get to talk to people who are happy to see us,” Register said. “Even if we have to issue someone a citation, it’s usually pretty good encounters.” When he is not working, this self-professed family man likes to spend time with his wife, Jeannette, and two sons, Jared and Jason. And there is where his modesty ends. “Both my kids, I’m super proud of,” Register said. Jared, 18, is going into the Air Force. Jason, 12, has done well in tae kwon do. Originally from Wilmington, Register graduated from Hoggard High School in 1991. He was active duty in the Navy from 1991 to 2001, and a Navy Seal for the final eight of those years. He worked with the Wilmington Police Department for three years before joining Marine Patrol in January 2004. He began as a patrol officer in the Surf City area, but his duties moved to New Hanover County in 2008. The North Carolina Wildlife Federation presents its Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards annually to individuals, associations, businesses and others who have exhibited unwavering commitment to conservation in North Carolina.
Make a Difference. Join Plastic Ocean Project.
An estimated 46,000 pieces of plastic trash float in every square mile of the ocean while 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic are estimated to be floating on the surface of the Earth’s oceans. 8 MILLION more TONS of plastic enter the ocean each year, harming and even killing marine life. We are in the middle of an unsustainable expansion of our use of plastic. 300 MILLION TONS of plastic were produced in 2012 and the number has been growing by roughly 8% a year. So much of this waste is single use plastic. 500 MILLION straws are used EVERY day in the USA. These are not recyclable. They are either sitting in a landfill, floating in the ocean or lying on the ground. What’s worse, plastic takes up the most volume in landfills and does not decompose, making it the most harmful type of waste. Due to the magnitude of production and the lack of infrastructure for proper disposal, only a small percentage of plastic is recycled: the world average is under 10%. That leaves millions of tons of plastics heading to landfills across the globe. Not only is this an unsustainable solution, it is causing the leeching of chemicals into our air and soil. Plastic leeching also excretes chemical run-off to waterways and oceans, further damaging our natural resources. Scientists have been aware of this problem since 1973, publicly started publishing concern in 1983 and yet today we produce more plastic at an annual growth rate of 4% each year. Starting at 1.5 million metric tons in the 50s we now produce over 300 million metric tons today. We need your support to change the direction of plastic production. The solution starts with each one of us. We all can make a difference. Here are a few ways I’ve cut down on plastic use and it’s not only good for the environment but it’s saving me money. For starters, I stopped using single use coffee makers with disposable plastic cups. I purchased a product for $3, yes it’s made of plastic, but can be reused over and over. It uses a small coffee filter, set it on top of your coffee cup and pour hot water in it. I no longer start my day throwing away a plastic cup. I also stopped purchasing bottled and canned drinks and instead bought a reusable bottle for water and tea. I started drinking way less soda because of this and actually feel better as a result. Why am I telling you all this you ask? Because one simple change in your daily habits can help preserve our natural environment and save you money. Please consider donating to Plastic Ocean Project. Swansboro/ emerald Isle OCTOBER – FOLLOW THE BAIT! As October settles in, anglers along NC’s Crystal Coast know that fishing this area of the coast is very enjoyable. October is an excellent month to fish along the Crystal Coast because various baitfish (mullet, glass minnows, shrimp, and menhaden) become so prevalent throughout the marsh, creeks, and lower rivers that it draws the attention of all of our inshore and nearshore popular fish species. The inshore waters will produce plenty of redfish, flounder, speckled trout, black drum, sheepshead, bluefish, spots, croaker, and more. Meanwhile, the nearshore waters will be alive with Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, flounder, grey trout and plenty of other bottom fish. Following the mass movement of bait, using the best artificial baits, understanding the tides, conditions, and locations to target each species are all crucial to having a successful day of fishing. TARGETING INSHORE SPECIES Some of the most popular inshore species that anglers look for this month are redfish, flounder, black drum, and speckled trout. Anglers can expect to find these species scattered throughout much of our backwaters this month. When working the shallow marsh bays behind our beaches or the oyster beds in the lower river for reds and flounder, I prefer to cast an 1/8-ounce jighead or a 1/4-ounce spinner bait tipped with a three- or fourinch Berkley Gulp Alive bait. If you suspect there might be some black drum in these same areas, a popping cork rigged with a live shrimp on a small circle hook is an excellent bait and it will catch above: Kellee Cronk from Swansboro the other species as well. If caught this large flounder near Bogue the tide is high, try working a Inlet with a twol-ounce bucktail and topwater bait along the flood- Gulp Shrimp on a recent trip with her ed grass for some incredible husband, Capt. Jeff Cronk. blow ups from redfish. If speckled trout are what’s peaking your interest this October, move out of the shallow bays and target the edges of the secondary channels that meander their way throughout the marsh systems. Some of the best trout baits include: Berkley Gulp Shrimp, Bett’s Halo Shrimp, VooDoo Shrimp, and a variety of MirrOlures. Anglers should look for current breaks pushing off the shores along deep channel walls. Anchor offshore of these locations and toss across the current breaks, working the baits back very slowly with an occasional twitch of the bait. Boat docks along the ICW and the rivers are often overlooked, but to a fish, these structures are a bait haven and provide good current breaks. This type of structure will attract all inshore species, especially on the falling tide. Try fishing the down current side of docks, casting either an artificial bait or a Carolina-rigged live bait under the dock and working out slowly. TARGETING NEARSHORE SPECIES Anglers that want to venture outside one of the Crystal Coast’s many inlets this month will have a multitude of options available, as every species that roams our nearshore waters can be found. Our tidelines, artificial reefs, and nearshore hard/live bottoms will be alive with 2 wilmington/Morehead city october 2017
10_2017 CAM .indd 2
Spanish and king mackerel, amberjack, cobia, barracuda, bull red drum, flounder, and plenty of other bottomfish. There will also be plenty of schools of albacore blitzing clouds of glass minnows in the early morning hours. Without a doubt, slow trolling live menhaden or jigbait will produce the best action on the surface for Spanish, kings, amberjack, and barracuda. If targeting big Spanish, use four- to fiveinch menhaden rigged with No. 4 to No. 6 gold trebles rigged with 20- to 30-pound wire and target tidelines and artificial reefs or hard bottoms within two miles of the beach. When focusing specifically on kings, use larger live baits with No. 2 to No. 4 trebles rigged with 40-pound or heavier wire. Amberjack fishing is in a class of its own. If you want to double down with one of these “reef donkeys” you want to step it up to a heavier rod/reel. I prefer PENN’s Rampage jigging rod paired with a PENN 750 Spinnfisher and loaded down with 60- to 80-pound Spiderwire Ultracast Invisibraid. These fish are rarely shy, but a six- to eight-inch live menhaden pulled on a 5/0 to 6/0 hook using 60- to 80-pound fluorocarbon will draw their attention and keep them hooked up during one of the strongest nearshore battles you’ll ever experience! If flounder and sea bass are what you’re wanting to put onto the dinner plate, nothing will be more productive than Bett’s two-ounce Flounder Fanatic Bucktail rigged with a four-inch Berkley Gulp Alive Shrimp. This bait combo is absolutely amazing! My clients and I jig these baits each summer along our nearshore live bottoms, landing deck loads of flounder and sea bass each trip and we never have to waste time to catch bait before our trip. Regardless of what species you’re targeting this month, chances are you’ll stretch a string and have plenty of action. Have a great time along the Crystal Coast this October and enjoy our beautiful marine resource FORECAST BY: Capt. Wrightsville Beach October is the month when ‘Fall’ fishing really gets in full swing! So many great fishing opportunities during October: big redfish, gator specked trout and jumbo flounder! As the waters cool down from the fall air, the redfish really get active and this is the time to catch some good numbers in shallow water. Mullets will be in full run by early October and redfish take full advantage of this! Casting topwater lures along marsh grass banks and oyster rocks in creeks and along the ICW will sure to put a redfish on your line. Try these topwater lures: MirrOlure’s Top-pup or Top dog Jr. Remember, work these lures with good side-to-side action (walking the dog) for sure strike bite action! Also, you can cast live finger mullets on rattling or popping corks for these shallow water redfish as well. The bigger reds start to show up in the ocean on hard bottoms and around the inlets during September. You never know when you might hook one of these hard-fighting fish. When I fish for bigger reds, I use fresh cut or live menhaden and mullet. I use fish-finder rigs with 7/0 or 8/0 circle hooks and 80-pound Berkley Big Game mono leaders. Don’t forget to keep your drag tight when using circle hooks so they will do their job. One tip I can give you when fishing for bull reds is don’t use above: Dan with two nice fall redfish tackle that’s too light he caught casting six-inch Berkley Gulp for these bigger reds. If Jerkshad while fishing with Capt. Jot Owens you fight them too long, around Wrightsville Beach. there is a chance you can tire them out too much and kill them. Try a medium/heavy rod and a reel with at least 30-pound mono or braid...this will help you get the fish in quicker, with a better chance of a good release. Check to see if the red has a yellow tag in its back; there are a fair amount of tagged big reds out there. Speckled trout are not too hard to catch, but knowing what lures to use and when can really make a difference in how many you catch. I prefer to use grubs and hard baits in deeper waters (six to twenty feet), like MirrOlure 52M, 52MR or 18MR series. The grubs I prefer are three-inch Berkley Gulp Shrimp, the new three-inch Ripple Mullet and four-inch Saltwater Assassin Seashad. When I’m targeting speckled trout in shallower waters (two to six feet) I prefer lures like the MirrOlure 17MR and 22MR (Catch 2000 Jr). On very calm mornings try a MirrOlure She Pup Top or Top Pup. Top water lures will catch ‘em. It’s so exhilarating to see a big fall trout hit a topwater lure! If you would rather use live bait, try live mud minnows or live shrimp; rig the live bait on a light Carolina rig for deeper water or a float rig for shallow waters. During October you can catch very good size and numbers of flounder. I catch most of my October flounder around the inlets, creeks and channels (deeper is better) that lead to the inlets. Casting lures like Berkley Gulp Jerkshad in five- and six-inch sizes should put some keeper flounder in the cooler for you. If you would rather 4 wilmington/Morehead city october 2017
10_2017 CAM .indd 4
use live bait, try a Carolina rig with a three- to six-inch mullet in the same areas. Try an Eagle Claw L42 1/0 size hook for your flounder Carolina rig. Just remember to take your time when you hook that doormat flounder...they are great at getting off the line so have a good landing net close by, like an EGO rubber mash net. Spanish mackerel and false albacore fishing can be great during October. The Spanish and false albacore run is the biggest of all year during the fall. You can cast or troll for them and the fly fishing can be great as well. The Spanish and false albacore will be around the inlets and nearshore artificial reefs. Look for jumping/busting fish and diving birds; that is where you will find the Spanish and false albacore. Casting small spoons or jigs on light spinning tackle will put some fish in the boat for you. If you would rather troll, try a Blue Water Candy Daisy Chain on top and a #1 planner down deep with a Clark spoon. If you would like to give fly fishing a try, use a six- to nine-weight set-up with floating line and a small minnow pattern fly or my favorite, an epoxy minnow pattern! Tackle run down: PENN Battle II and Conflict II spinning reels in 2000,2500, & 3000 sizes for the redfish, speckled trout, Spanish, albacore and flounder. For bull reds, PENN Fathom casting reels or Slammer III spinning reels. Rods: PENN Battalion 6’6” & 7’ medium and medium/heavy for the redfish, Spanish, albacore and flounder; medium/light for the speckled trout. For the bull reds, PENN Rampage Jigging Class rods in 50 to 100 class. Line: Spiderwire Ultra-Cast in 10 and 15 pound for the smaller species, with Berkley Pro Spec fluorocarbon leader material in 20-pound. For the big reds, line should be 30-pound Berkley Pro-Spec Chrome mono. Good October fishing to you and thanks for reading Coastal Angler Magazine! Forecast by: Capt. (Continued from previous page) casting small jigs have been working the best. King mackerel season is getting into full swing. Now’s the time to start fishing the Northwest Places. The fish will be in that area in big numbers this time of the year. It’s crazy how many fish you can catch there in October when the bite is on. Also, the east side of the Cape Lookout area will be producing some good fish; maybe not as many, but year after year you will always catch bigger fish from that area. Some fish havr started to move into the Shipping Channel; when the north winds blow the mullet will stack up and the kings will move in to take advantage of the buffet. Slow trolling live bait or trolling dead cigar minnows on Dead Bait Rigs will be the best choice for fall kings. Albacore fishing has been good and only will get better. Look along the beaches...there are plenty to play with...look for the birds and you’ll find the fish. Remember, the key to this fishery is looking for the fish, when they are on top they aren’t hard to see. There’s nothing like catching these fish on light tackle; pound for pound you can’t beat these drags screamers. Keep in mind, the fall fishing can change daily with the fronts. October can be one of the best months of the year to fish down along the Crystal Coast. New Product Review from ICAST 2017--Part 2
This article is my second part of product reviews from ICAST from July in Orlando, Florida. ICAST is the largest Sportfishing trade show which is the premier showcase for all the latest innovations in the fishing industry. Flying Fisherman Sunglasses – New for 2018 is their Moray Sunglasses. It has a semi-rimless wrap-around frame that will provide great lens coverage to help shield the sun from all angles. The frame has non-slip, co-injected temples and adjustable, rubberized nosepiece which aides in the comfort of wearing this awesome looking a pair of sunglasses! You can bet that I will be wearing the Moray sunglasses this year! Morays are available in matte black frames with copper-red, smoke or smoke blue-mirror lenses, matte gray frames with smoke blue mirror lenses and matte white frames with smoke-blue mirror AcuTint lenses. MSRP is $24.95 - $29.95. Visit www.flyingfisherman.com for more of their product information. MotorMate – This product helps to stabilize your outboard motor while trailering. The bouncing and jostling can damage your motor’s steering system, hydraulic lines, housing and transom. The MotorMate stabilizing system is designed to hold the motor firmly in place to prevent damage and to help protect your motor. I have an older model MotorMate and I can personally tell you that this is one product that I will always have protecting my outboard motor. It is so easy to install and remove. Comes in different colors to match most motors and is made of marine grade stainless steel. This product will fit Evinrude, Honda Marine, Mercury and Yamaha motors. To learn more go to www.motormateusa.com. Pelican – Coolers have come a long way and in a hurry. There are several cooler companies and they all seem to have their own little niche in the market. Pelican came out with their Elite Soft Cooler. This is a great new product for all outdoor enthusiasts. The exterior has a puncture-proof 840-denier double-coated Thermo-Plastic Urethane. The interior is FDA food grade, anti-mildew and anti-odor. The installation is high density closed-cell foam to help keep your drinks and food just right. It has 48 hour ice retention. This cooler comes in three different sizes. Model 10L will hold 12 cans, model 20L will hold 24 cans and the model 40L will hold 48 cans. All come with a press and pull buckle system to help secure and hold tight under pressure. It even has an integrated bottle opener! Go to www.pelican.com to learn more about this and many other products. Rapala – This company has come out with another great lure. The RipStop tail design creates a fast ripping, hard stopping, flashing swimbait action bait. Its forward motion stops instantly, just with a little bit of a movement before coming to a rest, then it will slightly lift its head with a slow-rise toward the surface. This bait has been made to be able to catch all of your favorite species of gamefish. It has a running depth of 3 to 4 feet. The body length is 3-1/2 inches and weighs 1/4 ounce with VMC Black Nichol fine wire hooks in the No. 6 and No. 7 sizes. Rapala has tons of products, so check out the new RipStop Tail Design and much more on www.rapala.com. TH Marine – This company continues to put great products on the market for the fisherman’s needs. We all know that we must have great fish care while handling them in and out of the live wells. Now TH Marine has come out the G-Force Conservation Culling System. This is a cull system that includes six non-penetrating cull buoys along with a quick beam and buoy holder. MSRP: $44.99. at www.thmarine.com. Strike King – Here is another great lure company who continues to raise the bar as a lure designer every year! This year Strike King introduced the Nude Cranks! Yes, I said Nude Crank! The Nude Series includes 16 different bodies for bass and walleye style baits. This will be for the angler that wants that certain color and now they will have a blank crank bait ready to be painted to their specs! MSRP will be the same as their painted counter parts on the shelves. Check them out on their website at www. strikeking.com. Lucky Craft – Lucky Craft has had the Sammy topwater baits in their arsenal for a long time and are very popular among anglers. Now they have introduced the new Lucky Craft Super Sammy 10 lb. This new topwater bait is 5-1/3 inches and weighs one ounce, equipped with #2 treble hooks. It still has the same walk-the-dog-action and sits tail down to keep more of the bait in the water, making it easier for the fish to grab on to. Lucky Craft has turned the hook hangers horizontally to let the bait walks more freely with less drag. Another great feature is that it has a loud one knocker rattle that produces a loud noise and will pull fish from a longer distance. Lucky Craft Pro Takahiro Omori helped design this new bait. He felt that this larger bait would entice the big fish from the deep to the shallows and he did just that, with the first bass weighing 10 pounds! Have your Go Pro ready for some super blowups with the Super Sammy 10 lb. Check out their complete inventory of products at www.luckycraftusa.com. Savage Gear – This is a bait that I would have never thought of, but then again this is why I am not a lure designer! Savage Gear won the “Best in Show” for ICAST 2017 with the 3D Topwater Bat. Yes, I said a bat and does it look wicked! It has flaps on each side to make it look like it is trying to swim in the water. The face and body are so realistic. Last year this same company won “Best in Show” at ICAST 2016 with the Topwater Duck! Two years in a row for Savage Gear...it makes you wonder what their entry will be for next year’s ICAST. Now you see why I call ICAST the Fisherman’s Candy Land. In my last two articles I have given you just a little taste of what is new, and going forward I will try to let you know of what else is new for the year. Hope you see you on the water! good options for hooking up with specks. Z-Man Swimming Trout Tricks, MinnowZ, and Slim SwimZ rigged on 3/16-ounce Trout Eye jigheads are great baits for pecking away at that school. I also have great success using 1/4-ounce Fathom Inshore jigheads with their four-inch Squirrely Tail Plastics. I like to dress all my trout offerings this time of year with Pro Cure bait scents–menhaden and shrimp formulas seem to work the best for me. The fall run of false albacore offer some of the most exciting fishing of the year for both light tackle spin and fly casters. Under the right conditions, acres of these fish can be found right outside of area inlets crashing baits on the surface. Sparsely tied Clouser minnows on 7 and 8 wt. fly tackle offer fly anglers the most exciting fishing of the year. Spin casting 1/2-ounce Hogy Epoxy Minnows and Jigfish will also connect with plenty of these fish. Bottom fishing in the 6- to 18-mile range will offer great opportunities at bringing home some nice fillets. Gag grouper, grunts, porgies, sea bass, and the occasional triggerfish can all be found in this range. Try targeting grouper with live pinfish, “turbo pogies”, and frozen minnows on oversized Carolina rigs. The rest of the mix bag will take more of a liking to squid baits and metal jigs on the bottom. Be sure and support your local tackle shops and charter captains, they are your ticket to a great fall fishing. Give us a call at South End Anglers for advice on inshore and nearshore fishing or to book a charter. Follow South End Anglers on Facebook at www.facebook.com/southendangersnc/ and Instagram at southendanglersnc.
If you asked me what my favorite month to fish Topsail Island is then the clear answer would be; you guessed it October. This month offers great shots at the big three inshore and the nearshore waters are always a good choice. You can just about bet that whatever you choose to fish for during the month of October you will have the greatest opportunity at success. Red drum fishing will be at its peak this month as the fish begin to stage up in areas that have an abundance of baitfish and shrimp movement. I like to focus around “pinch points”, meaning areas where the current flow tapers into a bottleneck the concentrates forage. The fish will position themselves depending on the tide on the leeward side of the “pinch points”. Grass shorelines, oyster beds, creek mouths, and channels that are adjacent to flats are the areas to focus on. I find it advantageous to employ tactics that cover water this time of year; topwater plugs, suspending twitch baits, chatter baits, weedless spoons, and soft plastics can all be effective tools. Rapala Skitterwalks and MirrOlure Poppa Mullets are among my favorites to throw early and late in the day. Don’t hesitate to throw a topwater bait throughout the day during overcast conditions. Casting and retrieving Z-Man Deizel MinnowZ on 1/4-ounce Fathom Inshore jigs is a great way to get strikes and cover water. Once you get a hookup, be sure to continue to cast to the same area, as red drum this time of year are likely to be schooled up. Speckled trout fishing should really kick off this month as the cold fronts begin to get these fish active again. Deeper channels with good current flow are areas that I focus on this time of year. Flying Around With Captain Lee
Even though many of us have been trying to reason with hurricane season, fighting rain and a lot of rain, the speckled trout bite is off to a start, seeing a lot of two-pound plus fish. Next month, it will only get better as the weather continues to cool down. MirrOlures are my first choice and grubs my second. Do not overlook live bait...live shrimp are killer but everything wants to eat them, not to mention that they are costly. A small pinfish in the “DD” battery size works great, is very cheap and easy to get and the trout have to eat them. The key to making one work well is to cut off their top fin with a small pair of scissors, hook them through their nose, put them on a float and let them drift along downcurrent edges. I like light wire Khale hooks in a 2/0 hook for this. For live shrimp. I like a small treble hook and hook it between the two dark spots on the shrimp or in the second joint in the back. If you use a Khale hook, come from the bottom up through the second joint from the tail. As for plastic grubs, there are two colors that work very well for me, Mountain Dew Green on bright sunny days and clear Chartreuse on cloudy days. If the water is stained, white, hot pink or anything in brown like Slurp’s Drunk Monkey or Gulp’s New Penny will work great. Red drum are always around and it is still warm enough to fish for them on spoons, topwaters, sort plastics and hard baits. I look for them on marsh edges...falling tides are my favorite times. You also can find schools on the falling tides out on the flats. Most of the time, if you find one, there will be more than one, so keep fishing that area for a while when you get one. Try different things when you find a fish. Try topwater if you catch the first one on a grub, or try a spoon and so on. Keep working that area, they will not go far. Live bait, like shrimp, mullet, pinfish and mud minnows is always good. Mud minnows are a good choice, as most tackle shops will have them and you do not have to spend your fishing time chasing bait. Float rigs are what I like the best...if oyster rocks are there, I will not use a lead head, I prefer Khale hooks in a 2/0 to 4/0 size. Hook the baits through the nose or the lips. Flounder, although moving back to the ocean, are still around. Look on the marsh edges where the bait runs and on the channel edges where it drops off. Either live bait, Slurp, or Gulp will work great. In shallow water I like using a float rig for them with live bait or artificials. When using soft plastic, if the water is shallow, worm hooks are my choice. Do not overlook popping corks, as we catch a lot of flounder on popping corks in shallow water. In deeper water, use Carolina rigs for live bait and lead heads for soft plastic. Oh yes, flounder love purple. As always be safe on the water and take a dry change with you as the water is cooling down quickly and hypothermia is no laughing matter.

southport-ocean isle Fall fishing in southeastern North Carolina is second to none! As the days get cooler, you can feel the angst that anglers begin to exhibit as they get ready to go target their next catch! October might actually be the most awaited month for fishing out of Southport/ Oak Island; with the fall king mackerel migration to the beaches to feed up for the impending winter months and the awesome flounder and citation red drum fishery abounding on the nearshore reefs! Butch King mackerel Foster of Yeah Right Charters. fishing in the fall is perhaps the most exciting situation to happen along southeastern NC each year and this can be seen nearly every week in the preparation for some of the best fishing tournaments that anglers have been waiting for all year. With the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament in Southport, OIFC Fall Brawl King Classic in Ocean Isle Beach, the Rumble in the Jungle in Little River, SC, and Rumble on the Tee at Ocean Crest Pier on Oak Island; along with several other tournament fishing opportunities up and down the coast, it is obvious this is the main focal point within the fishing community this time of year. King mackerel in the fall are most likely to be found feeding on the large menhaden (Pogies) and the infamous double-hook live bait rig will be the way to go; place a Bluewater Candy Feather Weight above: Trevor Bickhaus and Jordan Overbey of skirt in front of Glen Carbon, IL enjoyed catching trout and slot your baits to give red drum on a recent trip with Capt. Another trick-of-the-trade is to run a ribbonfish down on a downrigger mid-water column and hold on while you listen to the reel “scream” with a monster king mackerel peeling line off! Whether fishing a tournament or fishing to put some king mackerel steaks in the freezer, anglers are sure to find an awesome fishing experience this time of year! Backwater fishing will be producing good catches of red drum, speckled trout, and a few nice flounder as we progress toward the winter months, when the bite in the backwaters becomes much slower. Large, often citation sized, red drum will be migrating into our area as well and can be found on the nearshore reefs and hard-bottom areas. Many times, while fishing for flounder on the reefs, anglers will find themselves surprised to set the hook on something much bigger than they bargained for, a “bull” redfish! Look for schools of gray trout packed tight around the structure you normally flounder fish and put out a live mullet minnow on a Carolina rig to target the lingering flounder, gray trout, or one of these redfish. During the wait for the lifetime fish that will land you a beautiful certificate on the wall with much-anticipated bite, employ a two-ounce Sting Silver or Diamond bragging rights! Jig to get the trout bite going and many times you will end up catching Offshore, the bottom Fishing should be getting better and better as the fall months move forward. Grouper and snapper species will also be feeding up as the waters begin to cool and anglers will want to be sure to get some of these fillets for their freezers before the seasons will begin their yearly closures as the winter months approach. “Knothead” black sea bass will also begin to show up off our coast and daily catch limits are not out of the question if you get on the right rock! Some of our favorite bottom fishing is in the month of October, with large catches of some really nice fish being the norm. A little further offshore, in the Gulf-Stream, the fall wahoo bite will be getting “hot” as October progresses. There are many tactics for harvesting a box of wahoo and this time of year one might find that high-speed trolling tactics will work best for the most hits at the end of the day. Of course, a spread of ballyhoo is always a good bet, especially with the chance of hitting the fall tuna run while targeting your wahoo! Fall fishing in southeastern North Carolina is without a doubt some of the best fishing to be had, and with “cabin fever” soon becoming a reality as the temperatures begin to drop, the time is never been better than now for anglers to get out on the water and make some 2017 memories! We hope to see you on the water! FORECAST BY: Capt. Chris Foster Yeah Right Charters www.yeahrightcharters.com boat: 336-239-5429 • office: 910-845-2004

offshore/Pelagics Wow, the storms have been a huge issue and have made it difficult to get offshore to catch these fish. The air and the water are getting cooler and the fishing is getting better every day. If you can get a break in the weather then October is prime time to get offsdhore and have an awesome day of fishing. This time of year brings cooling water temps and you will finally begin to find some good temp breaks again. The bait will gather and the game fish will be chasing them looking for a meal. You can usually find the fish any-
where from 30-60 fathoms and they will be congregated in normal places where you find a temp break/change, coupled with good bottom structure and bait. Any ledge you find with bait around it is a good place to investigate for a while. Fall fishing offshore out of Beaufort Inlet typically focuses on wahoo with a side order of blackfin tuna and possibly a sailfish. Hey, it’s fishing, so you never know what may show up in the spread, but this is what we fiocus on. We generally run wire leaders on pretty much everything to prevent the cutoffs provided by the sharp teeth of the wahoo. The tuna will take the wire but you can always switch out to a couple of mono mini green machines or something similar if you find a good school of the tuna to work on. I never leave the dock without a properly rigged naked ballyhoo in the event a hungry billfish shows up. I advise the use of heavier tackle for the wahoo, a 50 wide reel is fine, but the wahoo will abuse the drag system of lighter tackle and cause you to lose more fish. A planer rod setup is a huge advantage when targeting wahoo, but if you do not have one just make sure you get at least one bait down deeoer into the water column. If you do not have one or do not know how to properly use one, then feel free to contact me and I will be glad to help you out. Colors usually are not the biggest issue but I often like to use at least one or two darker combinations. That said, I always will have some blue/white out there. Remember, colors catch more fishermen than they do fish! There are things to watch out for this time of year. The weather can be tricky and you can set yourself up for a beating if you are not careful. Even more important is to watch out for the teeth of these fish - they can cut you, and they will cut you BAD!!! They have a mouth full of razors and can cause potentially life changing damage - especially in light of the fact that they took the PEDRO chopper away and our helicopter rescue is now much further away. BE CAREFUL! Fall fishing offers world class wahoo fishing as well as some other tasty targets. Watch the weather, pick your days and get out there to catch some fish! Enjoy! FORECAST BY: Capt. Fishing with the Kid 2
You know we all have a sweet spot we like to fish when the fall weather comes, one that almost always yields some fish. You get the right tide the right cool morning. You load up the kayak. Today it is my Ultimate FX15 Tandem because my 8 year old daughter what’s to catch some Flounder. Could you not have asked for a more perfect day to get her on the water for some fishing? When I take my daughter kayak fishing it is a timing thing for me. If I can get her onto something as fast as possible that buys me more time on the water fishing before she starts to get bored. Even if she catches a croaker or two to start the day I am buying more
time on the water with her. My Native Ulitmate FX 15 Tandem is my favorite kayak to fish with my daughter in. Supper stable roomy and plenty of storage for our gear and her snacks, she can do some eating while we are on the water. Other than finding the right kayak to fish out of with my daughter is having a plan so the day runs smooth. So the plans for this trip have all rigs tied and ready. We decided to fish live bait so I put the live bait rigs on the rods before we left the house. Mom packed all the snacks and water to get us through the morning. Everything was loaded and ready to go. Off we went to the ramp, all I had to do was keep her in the truck drop the Ultimate FX 15 since all the gear was loaded in the bottom of it. Park the truck and we walked down to the kayak. We had fun catching bait. She called out where the schools of bait where. I think she has more than 20/20 vision since most of them were out of reach of the cast net. So we focused on some that where closer not 100 feet away. Made bait and we where off fishing in all it was a great morning on the water with my daughter she was a trooper and did not want to leave at the end of the day. The moral to this article is take your kid kayak fishing it is definitely doable. For me the preplanning was key. I did all the hard work on the front end and when we got to the water it was time to fish. Nice and smooth and she had a great time hanging out with me on a cool fall Sunday morning. My daughter really likes to kayak fish with me she thinks it is fun and easy to do. Well that’s has to do with the preplanning I do, and will continue to do for her for a while. If that’s what it takes to get her out for the day with me for some quality daddy daughter time it is well worth the effort the night before once we get her in bed. .article BY: Chris Tryon Hook Line and Paddle Canoe and Kayak Outfitters, Wilmington, NC Phone 910-330-6999 email: hooklineandpaddle@yahoo.com

Many successful and rewarding years in retail boat sales laid the foundation for Middle Sound Boatworks, a full service boat sales and yacht brokerage company. Middle Sound has grown, been very busy, and even profitable! It all started over 50 years ago when J.D. McCotter Sr. (Daddy Joe) had the dream to open a boatyard in Washington, North Carolina. McCotter’s Marina thrived as a “working yard” on the Pamlico River, later adding several high quality boat lines- including Chris Craft. A busy fuel dock, covered and open boat slips, railway travel lifts, wood shop and huge showroom provided decades of valuable services to all of the eastern North Carolina boating community. When you spend your childhood tinkering around a busy marina, it’s hard not to fall in love with boats. That is exactly what happened to Mac, while most kids were watching cartoons or playing Atari, he spent his afternoons sanding, scraping, painting, and dreaming boats. Let Capt. Mac McCotter and his lifetime of boating experience and knowledge go to work for you.

nowbird Creek, and its main tributary Big Snowbird Creek, are places fly anglers could spend days exploring and still leave water untouched. On its top end, Big Snowbird is one of the largest remaining flows populated with native southern Appalachian brook trout. On its lower end, near its mouth at Lake Santeetlah, Snowbird plays host to an annual migration of lake-run rainbows that reach lengths well in excess of 20 inches. In between these two stretches, the river has sections of hatchery-supported waters, trophy waters, a delayed harvest and steep gorges where wild rainbows and browns thrive. It’s a river that really does have it all. The biggest draw for most trout anglers is Big Snowbird Creek. In 2013 a 2.9-mile delayed harvest section was added to the creek. efty’s Deceiver may be the most effective fly pattern ever. Lefty Kreh developed the fly in the 1950s and since then Deceivers have caught fish all over the world. Lefty describes the Deceiver as a tying method rather than a specific fly pattern. This allows for modifications in color, size and materials. These alterations have made the Deceiver extremely versatile. Here are a few “alternative” Deceivers you should think about tying: Half-and-Half is a hybrid fly that combines the best elements of the Deceiver and the Clouser Minnow. The fly is essentially a Clouser Minnow with hackle feathers instead of bucktail for the tail. The Half-andHalf is very popular in the salt from Maine to the Outer Banks. Striped bass, bluefish, redfish and seatrout are suckers for it. Big-Eye Deceiver is a standard Deceiver with a teal or mallard feath-
to the footbridge at the end of the gravel road that parallels the creek, receives heavier stockings and is catch-and-release, artificial-only from October into June. This provides some much needed protection for a stream where access is almost too easy. Before the regulations were implemented, I remember driving past miles of some of the most gorgeous-looking trout water to get to the walk-in section where there were actually fish. Now, it’s well worth stopping to fish. At the end of the gravel road, a rail junction existed when the area was logged in the 1920s. This point, known as “The Junction,” begins some of the best walk-in water in western North Carolina. Fishing pressure drops off progressively the farther you’re willing to walk, and the water is a seemingly endless series of pocket water stretches broken by deep bend runs and plunge pools. Most of the fish are small wild rainbows, but there are some browns, and some big browns will occasionally reward anglers willing to spend some time dredging out the deeper holes. There are miles of stream suitable for a 3- or 4-weight rod upstream of The Junction. On some days, the fishing can be gangbusters for lots of little wild trout; on other days it can be downright tough. Like any wild stream, the fish can be wary of predators and sometimes selective about what they eat. Lower Falls, marked as Big Falls on many maps, is the lowest of several cascades that serve as barriers to block upstream movement of rainbows and browns. Above Lower Falls, there are seven or more miles of creek where only brook trout live up into the headwaters. It’s big water in terms of native brook trout, or “speck,” fishing. There are some good campsites along the trail that meanders to and away from the creek, and the upper end of Big Snowbird is an outstanding place to pack in and spend a few days fishing. For GPS coordinates to access points and detailed maps of Snowbird and all of North Carolina’s and Georgia’s best trout water, check out “Flyfishers Guide to North Carolina & Georgia.” It is available at fly shops, on Amazon, and signed copies are available from the author by emailing nsc8957@gmail.com. er “cheek” on either side of the collar. The feather is treated with Flexament and then either a big eye is painted on it or a big prismatic tape eye is glued to it. This pattern is usually tied in larger sizes for bigger gamefish. Cockroach Deceiver (tail: grizzly hackle, collar: gray squirrel tail) has been fooling tarpon for decades. Angler, author and former editor of Fly Tyer magazine, Art Schenk calls this pattern his desperation pattern for largemouth bass. Fishair Deceiver (tail: Fishair, collar: Fishair) uses synthetic hair which produces a very durable fly. This variation is good for bluefish, barracuda, mackerel and other toothy critters. Marabou Deceiver (tail: hackle, collar: marabou) is a great fly to use when you want to dead drift a baitfish imitation in current. The marabou breathes and pulses on its own and provides a lot of action. Bucktail Deceiver (tail: bucktail, collar: bucktail) is easier to tie than the original. If tied so the bucktail flares a bit, the pattern can mimic the transparency of many small baitfish. Ostrich Deceiver (tail: ostrich herl, collar: bucktail) is a nice pattern to imitate narrow-bodied baitfish like sand lances or large eels. Northeast striper anglers need to tie some of these up. Hidalgo’s Poltergeist (tail: Sparkleflash, body: Diamond Braid, collar: Sparkleflash) This is a very effective, flashy minnow imitation that I tie in small sizes. Sparkleflash is not very common in the United States. Flashabou Weave (three-strand blend) is similar and can be substituted. Crawfish Deceiver (tail: red squirrel tail, body: non-lead wire covered with brown chenille, collar: red squirrel tail) I tie this fly to imitate swimming crawfish. It is much easier to tie than most crawfish imitations. Fish it with short sharp strips followed by pauses. Tie some of these for largemouth, smallmouth, trout or any other gamefish that likes mud bugs. I hope you add some of these “alternative” Lefty’s Deceivers to your arsenal. They will help you catch more fish. Contact Carlos at cah6620@gmail.com to submit a pattern for consideration in this column, if you would like a high-resolution copy of this photo or if you would like to order my book, “South Florida’s Peacock Bass.”

h, the fall. It brings us colorful foliage, football, fresh apple cider and big ornery brown trout. When the mercury begins to take the plunge and daylight starts to dwindle, big mature brown trout start their yearly routine of procreation. What follows is a feeding binge of mature trout. Fish that have been uncatchable all summer throw caution to the wind. This is not the time for small flies and delicate presentations. Big gaudy nymphs and large streamers are the name of the game in fall. Large stonefly patterns like Girdle Bugs and Pat’s Rubber Legs are good choices as are the usual generic mayfly patterns like Hare’s Ears and Pheasant Tails, just opt for

a size 8 instead of an 18. My personal favorite fall flies are streamers, and something with a little bit of color, too. For some reason big fall browns seem to like streamers with a bit of orange in them. Sculpin patterns can be especially deadly this time of year. Whether it be the giant protein-packed snack a big sculpin delivers or a triggered attack response implanted in trout to protect their roe, it should be used to your advantage. It is also the time for stealth. With overly large trout sometimes holding in ridiculously shallow water, being sneaky pays huge dividends. Wear drab colored shirts at the very least. Even a camouflage jacket is not too far fetched. I normally work a river upstream, but this is not the case when fishing fall streamers. I’ll work it down. I can be much quieter and more stealthy when walking with the current as opposed to against it. If possible, stay on the bank as much as you can. Most fish will hit on the swing, so the area you expect the take to come will be downstream of your location. If you were working upstream, you could have already spooked a fish. Cast across, swing it down, take a few sneaky steps down stream, think about it, cast across, swing it down. Walking the river is crucial. Don’t just haphazardly crash through the water on your way to a good run. Hunt the river this time of year. Take a few steps and watch. This is where a good pair of polarized glasses are worth their weight in gold. Look over the entire stream, not just the typical haunts. You may be pleasantly surprised and amazed by what you’ll see. Trout will still be positioned in good usual runs too, but much more apt to attack your offering. Instead of heading to the deer stand or taking up a spot on the couch to watch the big game, get out on the stream. Just maybe, a kyped-up, big old slab of spotted butter will end up in your net. he dry brisk November morning air is a welcome change to Florida’s Forgotten Coast residents, but not just for the obvious reasons. The summer heat has lifted, and the mighty red drum is hungry and looking to fill her belly with whatever kind of crustacean or finny fish she can get close to. As you move stealthily along the marsh, you search for the signs: a wake along the grass line or a tail piercing the water’s surface. Either one is worthy of a cast and, if presented properly,
can result in the silence of the morning stalk being broken by the crash of a topwater plug being engulfed, the scream of a reel’s drag and some enthusiastic expletives. Stalking the skinnies of the marsh can be a challenging experience. Reds spook easily, so stealth is a must, as are accurate and purposeful casts; all this is what makes the hunt so rewarding. The waters of Franklin County are teeming with reds, making the chance of fooling, fighting and releasing a mighty red an extremely attainable and rewarding experience. If you come to this area to chase reds, any shallow-drafting boat will put you in a position for success, but some are better suited than others. Ideally, the ability to pole, paddle or scull your vessel will give you the advantage of stealth, but a trolling motor and a well-planned use of tides and wind also works well on the flats. Franklin County TDC is giving away a free red fishing excursion this month, so enter for your chance to win and make your redfish dream a reality. The reds and so many other fish are abundant in some of the most beautiful places on earth, right here. Don’t let another fall go by without experiencing this amazing time of year along Florida’s Forgotten Coast. For more details or to sign up, go to: www. floridasforgottencoast.com. EXPERT ADVICE
See the Fish
DAVID MANEY, FOWLER’S SUNGLASSES
W
alking a shallow trout stream, casting to structure in lakes or making sure you’re going after the biggest fish in an offshore school you need functional high performance UV sunglasses to see beneath the water. One pair may not fit the function for each of these varied UV demands. Shallow streams with bright sunlight require amber for most people. Deeper murky waters and overcast conditions need grey or amber. For offshore with bright sun and the need to see deeper into the blue waters, your best bet is blue mirror or grey. As an avid angler and someone who’s been involved in the sunglasses industry for over 20 years, my advice is to always try to match the sunglasses to the condition. This requires keeping several different UV’s with you. Most sunglass cases come with clip-on attachments so keeping a few pair of sunglasses with you has never been easier. As the conditions change during your day, you’ll be prepared to match your UV formula with the change. Once you’ve prepared yourself for these UV changes you’ll be on top of your angling game no matter what.
For the best overall coverage in any condition I recommend one pair of blue mirror/grey and one pair of green mirror/ amber. This simple modification in your sight fishing tactics will make a huge difference in your angling success. Tight Lines, David Maney Fowler’s Pharmacy 888-340-9021 www.FowlersSunglasses.com

FLY FISHING
D
uring the fall and winter, there is not a better saltwater game fish to target with a fly rod than redfish. Plentiful throughout the Gulf States, the redfish provides a great fly fishing opportunity for anglers of all skill levels who want to sight fish in shallow clear water. I’ve always considered the redfish to be the perfect saltwater game fish. It offers the angler a perfect venue to hone his or her sightfishing skills. Why? Because of two important factors: accessibility and plentiful fishing opportunity. From a logistical standpoint, most anglers can book a flight for great redfish destinations from most major cities in the U.S. Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and the panhandle of Florida are prime winter redfish spots. Each of these locations has experienced fly fishing guides who are knowledgeable and professional. Access to the marsh flats, where the redfish live in the winter, is quite easy and the number of redfish you see in a day can be mind blowing! Three factors for successful sight fishing to Redfish: 1) Can you see the fish? Visibility is the most important factor when sight fishing in shallow water. It’s great when you have a bluebird day and you’re seeing the fish from 100 yards away. However, Mother Nature usually has her own ideas on conditions. So, being able to identify fish even in tough lighting is important. Look for odd shapes in the water, V shaped wakes or even a subtle dimple that breaks the water’s surface. These are all signs of redfish feeding in an area. TIP: Use yellow polarized lenses. These will provide better contrast under tough lighting conditions. 2. Can I make a short cast? Many redfish are hooked 20 feet or less from the boat. Believe
me, the short cast is the toughest cast to make when sight fishing to redfish. Why? Because we are so focused on perfecting the 60-foot cast and neglect the importance of dropping a cast less than 20 feet from the boat. The 60foot cast is important, but it rarely comes into play when sight fishing to redfish. Work on your short cast as well. TIP: Work on a flip cast. Only cast the head of your fly line at targets on your left and right sides at 10 to 20 feet max. 3) Where should I place the fly? Redfish can see very well. I’ve seen them chase a fly from 20 feet way. However, I find placing a fly a couple feet in front of their noses works best. Once you’ve made the cast, let the fly settle to the bottom. As the redfish moves toward the fly, begin to move the fly with short strips. Once the redfish sees the fly, it will swim over and inhale it. At this point all you have to do is keep the rod tip on the water and strip strike to set the hook. TIP: On an open lawn, place small Frisbees at 5, 10, 20 and 30 feet from your casting position. Work on placing the fly in the center of each Frisbee without a false cast.

n May, Minnesota angler Jake Robinson tied his own catch-and-release state record with a 49-inch flathead catfish from the Minnesota River. Mark Mosby, of St. Anthony, Minn., had apparently seen enough of that mess. In August, he went out on the St. Croix River and hauled in a massive flathead that measured 52 ½ inches in length and 32 inches in girth. Minnesota DNR recently announced that it is the new state record for the catch-and-release category. Actually, Mosby describes himself as an occasional angler.
