Since its inception in 1981, Penn Heritage Celebration has grown from a single day of events and food to
three days of festival songs, meals, performers, displays, and other events. In 1983 the Heritage Parade from St. Helena Elementary School to Penn Historical District was established. Schools and other groups are invited each year in the effort to expand Penn’s family of friends and supporters. We want everyone to feel like a member of the Penn family.
Because so many individuals and institutions of the Sea islands have been touched by the activities of Penn School, and later Penn Center, and because Penn has been instrumental in preserving and strengthening the Sea Island Culture, the idea of Penn Heritage Celebration was born in August of 1981.
So,exists.enjoy
our Heritage with us. sing along, enjoy our traditional meals ,and share with us our program and displays. Your participation helps us to preserve and strengthen our Heritage. Whether you are a new visitors or lifelong resident, enjoy this day, and please make plans to return next year during the second weekend in November.
Questions such as “what was Penn School? “What is the Gullah Culture?” ” Where is Penn Center?” These questions are asked by so many people locally and statewide further substantiated the need for Penn School Heritage Celebration.
Penn Heritage Celebration thus is an effort to expose the public to Penn School, the Sea Islands’ history and culture, and the various Africanisms that still exists. But most importantly, it is a gesture to prevail to each person that Penn school is a place of people are always welcome and a place that people can learn about important people, the African American or the sea islands.
Penn Center
Actually, activities for Penn Heritage Celebration are not at all new ideas. These activities were conducted yearly from the early 1900 until Penn closed in 1948. During that period, the day was called “Harvest Day.” Of course, when the idea of Heritage Day was conceived, the dreamers thought it was a was brand new . This only reinforced why Penn Heritage Celebration is so appropriate, for at Penn Center a meaningful legacy

Or at least some people think so. There’s no denying that ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and (sometimes) allspice are a wonderful combination of spices.
Pumpkin bread, muffins and cookies are also popular on the market. Coffee creamer and pumpkin beer are also huge food trends in the fall. Pumpkin spiced recipes abound on the internet and Pinterest alike. There’s a lot of theories about why pumpkin spice is so popular including the following:
Pumpkin and those warming spices remind us of coziness, holiday baking and Thanksgiv ing time. It’s the ultimate comfort-food. Buying a “PSL” or other product when you’re out is an affordable luxury. It’s a treat that won’t break the bank and feels like an indul gence. That could be why pumpkin spiced products were especially popular in 2008 dur ing the recession and perhaps one reason be hind an early release in 2020 during COVID.
Pumpkins are also a great source of dietary fiber which is extremely beneficial for a healthy digestive system and can also support heart health and make you feel fuller for lon ger. The type of fiber in pumpkin grabs onto cholesterol molecules and escorts them out of the body via the digestive tract. It’s always re ally fun to me to consider how many incred ible health benefits are sitting right there in normal foods that we eat every day. You just have to make sure to actually eat them on a daily basis!
Pumpkin spiced flavors embody American
nostalgia. As we seek that external feeling of happiness.It’sdelicious.

Parents and schools institutions play a vital role in reducing the prevalence of childhood obesity. Schools must ensure physical activity during recess, physical education, and other daily outdoor/indoor tasks. Dietary intake is another imperative factor that can influence a child’s obesity status.Healthy eating habits are important to reduce obesity in children of all ages (Simmons, Alexander, Ewing, & Whetzel, 2012). It may also prevent tooth decay and gum disease as the strong anti-bacterial and disinfecting properties of Cinnamon keeps your mouth healthy and promotes oral hygiene
Benefit #5: Controls infections. Did you know that ancient Egyptians used cinnamon as an embalming agent so that they could store their food for more days without letting it spoil? That’s because cinnamon is known to have antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antiseptic properties.

Benefit #1: Great for Type II Diabetes patients. If you are a victim of Type II Diabetes or if you know someone who is suffering from it, you must recommend cinnamon to them. Consuming cinnamon in any form, whether it is quills, powder or extracts, will produce insulin in your body and reduce the LDL, which is bad cholesterol in your body.
Benefit #3: Acts as an aphrodisiac. Have you ever smelt the cinnamon on the top of your coffee and observed its fragrance that goes straight into the head? Cinnamon helps to release the ‘happy hormones’ in your body and hence elevates your mood. You can use cinnamon as an aphrodisiac by sprinkling it on mashed apples, coffee, other milk based shakes and select soup servings.

KEEP TREATS AWAY FROM PETS
CONSIDER SKIPPING THE COSTUME.
Resist the temptation to share Halloween candy with your pet. In fact, keep all candy safely out of reach. Chocolate, candy or gum artificially sweetened with xylitol can be dangerous for dogs.

BE CAUTIOUS WHEN TAKING YOUR PET TRICK-OR-TREATING.
CREATE A SAFE SPACE FOR YOUR PET AT HOME.
If your neighborhood is particularly busy on Halloween and the sidewalks are overflowing with exuberant trick-or-treaters, it may be best to leave your pet at home.
Tips to Keep Your PetsSafe This Halloween5
and candy make Halloween a highly anticipated event for children and adults alike, but the holiday can be particularly spooky for pets. Some of the same things that bring humans joy on All Hallows Eve can lead to poisoning, stress or anxiety, which may cause four-legged family members to run away or react aggressively.
If you do decide to venture out with your pet, make sure he or she is always close to you on a secure leash (avoid retractable leashes). Observe your surroundings and people - especially friendly, excited children - approaching you and your pet, because physical contact from strangers in costumes may instigate a fearful or aggressive reaction.
It’s best not to dress up your pets for Halloween, but if you choose to, it’s important for pets to wear safe, comfortable costumes. They should be loose enough to provide freedom of movement but not loose enough to be a tripping hazard. On the other hand, costumes that are too tight can restrict breathing and make movement difficult. Make sure your pet’s costume does not interfere with vision or hearing.
DECORATE WITH SAFETY IN MIND.
Festive decorations help set the mood, but they can also create health risks for your pet. While non-toxic, pumpkin and pumpkin seeds can upset stomachs, especially when consumed in large quantities. Lit candles in Jack-O-Lanterns may pose fire hazards if toppled by a curious four-legged friend. Decorative lights can brighten your porch but should be kept out of your pet’s reach as nibbling on electrical cords can cause electrocution.
