the region’s coastal charms. Their new property was a former tomato farm, perfect for supporting the couple’s new hobby: raising chickens. Fortunately for them, they had a knack for it. Before too long, the Bishops had more eggs than they knew what to do with. They began selling the surplus, and learning about how to expand the farm in a healthy and sustainable way. To give a sense of how successful this expansion has been, the farm’s chicken population has ballooned from the original 20 to over 3000. While her husband has kept his IT job, Ester has been able to commit herself to the farm full-time. She prides herself on providing her animals with joyful, stressfree lives. “People should know where their food comes from – you can really taste the difference,” said Bishop.

heck out some of our top picks for New Bedford! Anyone interested in classic art will enjoy the exhibition opening of "The Azorean Spirit: The Art of Domingos Rebelo" at the Whaling Museum on April 7 from 6-7 p.m., followed by a roundtable discussion about the artist and his work from 7-8 p.m. The museum website notes that in a career spanning more than 60-years, Domingos Rebelo (1891-1975) belongs to the first generation of Portuguese modernist
10
museums painters. He created thousands of works of art that reflected his Portuguese identity and culture and honored his Azorean roots. Because his dream of exhibiting his works for Portuguese emigrant audiences abroad in the United States never came true during his lifetime, "The Azorean Spirit: The Art of Domingos Rebelo" is the first international exhibition of his work to be presented in America. Organized by his grandson and researcher, Jorge Rebelo, this seminal exhibition brings together over 50 paintings and works on paper from collections in continental Portugal and the Azores. On April 21, the museum will also delight art aficionados with IGNITE 2022: A Youth Showcase of Art Inspired by the Historic Women of South Coast, an art show inspired by the Historic Women of South Coast workshop the museum conducted in January and February.
April 2022 | The South Coast Insider
Museum marketing consultant Jakub Lis said he is proud to note that the 2020 showcase had featured 25 talented young artists, and the 2022 show will feature a similar number of them. “Anyone between the ages 12 and 22 was welcome to submit their work,” he said, “and the results were amazing.” He also noted that from April 18 to April 22, parents and children alike should take advantage of April vacation week activities at the museum each day starting at 6 p.m. Activity details have not been finalized, but the museum promises each family-friendly activity will be both fun and educational. History buffs should attend the Local History Guild’s presentation at the museum on AHA Night, scheduled for April 14. The topic has not yet been set, but it always centers around moderated conversations with experts on local history.

The Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum (RJD) at 396 County Street has offerings for kids and adults alike during April vacation week. Executive Director Dawn E. Salerno explained in a press release that the second floor of the museum invites visitors to sit on the furniture, handle period toys, and even make their own thaumatrope – a Victorian “fool-the-eye” toy. “Children will also have an opportunity to read books from the late 19th and early 20th centuries while sitting in a bean bag chair in this cozy nook,” Salerno said. “As a complement to the hands-on activities, toys from the museum's collection will be on display nearby.” For adults seeking activities for elementary school-aged children, a museum visit is the

Meanwhile, the UMass downtown New Bedford College of Visual and Performing Arts gallery at 715 Purchase Street is gearing up for its MFA art show, under the direction of Gallery Director Viera Levitt. Organizers said the nine students who are graduating from this year’s UMass Dartmouth MFA program have submitted and installed their final project work for an exhibit opening on April 3 from 3-5 p.m. This will be followed by an opening during AHA Night on April 14, when the artists will give talks on their work from 7-9 p.m. They note a variety of art media will be represented, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and mixed-media. perfect hands-on, minds-on activity. A scavenger hunt and prizes for participation will be featured. Children under 18 are admitted for free during museum hours that correspond with April school vacation week (April 16, and April 20 through 23). Only the accompanying adult will be charged admission. For adults seeking their own recreation during school vacation week, Salerno noted, the Rotch-Jones-Duff House museum is also presenting the second in a series of live online talks from makers of local arts and crafts. On April 14 at 5:30 p.m, RJD's own Rick Finneran will weave together the topics of poetry, repurposed wood, and woodworking in his distinct, storytelling manner. Specifically, Finneran has
been building wooden rocking chairs. While this project started as a hobby two years ago, he has now received special orders and made six chairs. Finneran's title at the RJD is Facilities Manager and Lead Gardener, but many also know him as a local poet. This event is free as a part of New Bedford's AHA Night. The highlight of the RJD museum's spring season for adults is all about the music. Salerno noted that two local cultural organizations, RJD and the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, are teaming up for a concert on April 3 at 2 p.m. in the double parlors of the historic mansion, with NBSO Principal Oboist, Laura Shamu, and Principal Bassoonist, Michael Mechanic. The museum notes the parlors of the RJD mansion were used for musical performances by both Jones and Duff families when it was their private home. Beatrice Duff would have regular Thursday “musicales” as she called them, either playing the piano herself, or inviting guest musicians to play. Seating in this intimate setting is limited, so purchasing tickets in advance is recommended. For more information, visit the museum website at rjdmuseum.org.

Palmer River Grille also has a full bar and seats more than 200 guests. It features an upstairs event room that accommodates 50 guests for celebrations ranging from birthdays to baby showers to anniversaries. Each of the three locations offer daily specials in addition to their regular menus. “We have a passion for creating good experiences,” David Gorman says. “It’s in our blood and it’s something we enjoy doing. We love seeing people unwind and have a good time.”
Cooking up connections
Before it was the Palmer River Grill, the new restaurant was the location of the Country Inn for 30 years. Palmer River’s Head Chef is Rolando Reyes, who was the main chef at the Country Inn for 18 of those years. Chef Rolando brought with him many skilled and devoted employees from the previous establishment, and the Palmer River menu includes “Inn Favorites” that Reyes also brought with him. “We felt that our formula worked well at Sakonnet and that we could make it work at another location,” Jim Gorman says. The Gormans purchased the Palmer
River location in August 2019. They completely gutted and reconstructed the building, and they did all of their own interior design and decor. All three restaurants offer something for customers of all age groups. While the Four Corners Grille has a laid back, casual atmosphere, Palmer River and Sakonnet River welcome guests wearing t-shirts and jeans to jackets and ties. Amongst the staff are Jimmy’s children, Alex, James, and Colby. For the Gormans, creating a “family” of employees is vital to their mission. They have more than 100 people on their payroll between the three restaurants, and many of the staff members have been with them for many years. “Our employees don’t work for us, they work with us,” Chris Gorman says. “We treat them with respect and we want them to be successful. We know that they have bills to pay.” “We create a culture of respect among our employees,” Jim Gorman says. “Restaurants can be notoriously rough-and-tumble, and customers can sense when employees are disgruntled. Constant turnover is unsettling and expensive. Our staff is consistent. We want to maintain a certain level of quality through stability. We surround ourselves with good people who are hard-working, friendly, and courteous.”
Many of the Gormans’ customers are like an extended family. “We’ve developed a community of customers who know us,” Chris Gorman says. “We’re on a first-name basis with many of our customers. We know their children and grandchildren. We also like seeing past employees who come back to dine at our restaurants and bring their families with them.” Gorman says, “You can’t just open and successfully operate a restaurant because you know how to cook. It requires hard work, determination, and perseverance.” “You can’t be an absentee owner with a restaurant,” David Gorman says. “You’re like a doctor. You’re always on call, ready all the time. You have to be willing to give yourself to it.” “It’s enjoyable being your own boss – you do things the way you want them done,” Jim says. “You have your own vision and you make your own dream come true.” For more information or to review a menu, visit: 4cornersgrille.com, palmerrivergrille.com, or sakonnetrivergrille.com.

Spring detoxification by Carissa Wills-DeMello
The transition from winter to spring marks the movement from a season of rest and reflection into a season of movement and growth.
T
his outer transition is exemplified by melting snow and the first shoots and buds showing themselves. Our bodies are a microcosm of the earth. So just as the gardener will begin to plan for pruning, fertilizing, and cultivating their plot to prepare for an abundant season, we too must garden our inner landscape! We must clear out the waste, nourish our
14
cells, and awaken our systems for the busy months and long days ahead. A word that comes up often in the context of inner spring cleaning is of course “detoxification.” Big businesses will have you believing that detoxification is a process we need to force our bodies into. On the contrary! Detoxification is a natural process happening at every moment through a concerted effort of several systems and organs in our incredible bodies. That being said, there are times when those systems need a little extra TLC from mother nature. For instance, after being sick when we’ve got a whole lot of waste products to rid ourselves of—or, at this time of year, after we’ve spent the winter months eating heavier foods and moving a bit less. This isn’t a bad thing. It’s quite natural to have taken the winter to nourish ourselves with dense root veggies and meats, to hit the hay early and rise late. But spring is here, and so our bodies are ready to transition! Queue the herbal support. Human beings have always

lived in rhythm with nature. When we relied more on our gardens and foraging we didn’t have to look farther than out our door to know what plants would support spring detoxification. While it may feel like we’ve forgotten, don’t fret, remembering is simple and fun!
Get to know your liver
When you think detoxification, think liver. The liver is the most critical organ when it comes to inner balance. It’s the largest organ in our body, and processes everything that we take in – whether that be through our mouths, skin or lungs! In The Science and Art of Herbalism, Rosemary Gladstar explains that “the liver sorts, stores and processes countless compounds. It has the ability to turn harmful chemicals into harmless byproducts, and flushes them out. It also manufactures over 13,000 chemicals including vital hormones.” Absolutely incredible, right? And as if that wasn’t enough, the liver has the ability to literally
regenerate itself. That most certainly makes the liver a symbol of spring renewal. Suffice it to say, the key to spring detoxification for us all is the liver. And if you happen to be coming out of winter experiencing allergies, blood sugar imbalance, or constipation, then that’s an extra signal to make liver support your priority. That’s your body saying, “Hey you! Our liver has important work to do and we’re too backed up with toxins to do it!” Have no fear, it happens, and your liver responds quickly to herbal support.
proof will be in the pudding! There also happens to be a class of herbs called “hepatics” which contain compounds that specifically aid liver function and even regeneration. Dr. Marisa Marciano, the “Naturopathic Herbalist” explains that hepatic herbs “tone, strengthen, and in some cases increase the flow of bile. In a broad holistic approach to health they are of great importance because of the fundamental role of the liver in the workings of the body.” Milk thistle is the shining star of hepatics. This is an incredible weed worth researching and befriending. Research has shown that milk thistle has the amazing ability to promote the regeneration of liver cells, even in case of disease, and protect cells against some toxins. Five ways to feel the vibration spring renewal for body and soul by Stacie Charbonneau Hess
Spring is a time for renewal

time to put aside our clunky boots and heavy coats, and trade our snow shovels for garden hoes. Spring is also a time for self-care, and letting go of that which no longer serves us. In the longer days of spring, we feel more naturally buoyant and willing to attend to those tasks that we put off all winter long: cleaning closets, starting a fitness or meditation routine, choosing healthier foods. What follows are five ideas for cleaning your mind, body, and spirit (and maybe even your closet). How you interact with your living environment (and that includes your body) does matter. Here are five places that will help you improve the quality of your life. Drink a cold-pressed juice at

homes. Our bodies, too, can use a detox from time to time. People’s Pressed – with a location in Padanaram and another in downtown New Bedford – offers three, four, and five-day juice cleanses you can pre-order online and pick up. Every bottle of cold-pressed juice contains over two pounds of fruits and vegetables. Very cleansing! If you don’t feel you are ready for a full-on cleanse, go to People’s Pressed for a colorful açai bowl, a creative coffee (my favorite is “On Shrooms'' which is a luscious concoction of cacao, mushroom, coffee, and superfoods), or a healthy smoothie such as the Queen Bee (organic pink dragon fruit, banana, pineapple, and coconut water, topped with bee pollen). Owner Amanda attests on their website: “We believe raw foods have the ability to help us live happy, healthy lives. When our customers are flourishing, our community will thrive.” Having access to fresh, whole foods like those at People’s Pressed is a real treasure.

Speaking of good energy, owners Howard Klein and Jeff Costa have brought some sparkle to Downtown New Bedford. Costa, a former personal trainer to celebrities in Los Angeles, teaches at the studio. His partner in real life and business, Klein, runs the business side of things, inspired by his 11-year stint as a retreat and wellness center director in Bali, Indonesia. As a longtime yogi, I found the studio last year when the idea of meeting together and breathing together was still a fraught concept. Today, the studio is booming and the schedule is replete with amazing offerings that are sure to raise your vibration and, in the process, connect you with fitness and spiritual seekers in your community. Choose from a wide range of meditation workshops, chair yoga, mindful vinyasa, pride yoga, and an intriguing class called the Hollywood 30 (described as “a sweaty, low impact, barefoot cardio class”). Longtime salon owner Gloria Perperas calls herself a “community person” for a good reason. She knows how to give back big in small ways. Here is one of a million examples: at the height of Covid, she left a basket of snacks and drinks for the delivery men and women who were working overtime, with a nice note of gratitude. You’ll always find a food collection box located somewhere in the salon, and a chalkboard in the bathroom on which to contemplate the essentials
of life: kindness, patience, self-love. A trip to this no-tipping salon in Fairhaven will raise your vibration in precisely this way: the folks at Gloria and Company make you feel worthy, special, and loved. For a special spring cleaning service, try the “salt stone detox ritual” with detox oils and Himalayan salt. The ritual, they say, “equals the benefits of a three-day detox diet.” Best of all, when you leave their salon, you will have more than relief from a stiff neck, gorgeous red fingernails, or freshly-cut hair – you will have renewed energy with which to interact in your daily life. Innovation is key to the success of Gifts to Give. On their website, President Jim Stevens says, “Completely volunteer driven, we have never applied for or taken a state or federal grant in the pursuit of these goals.” Since 2009, Stevens and his crew of volunteers from ages 3 to 85 learn, experience, share, teach, and reinforce important life lessons every single day. R
hode Island transplant and entrepreneur Matthew Bailey is spreading “the pecan gospel” one delicious nut at a time! Bailey, a North Kingstown resident, is the owner and founder of American Pecan Co., producers and growers of quality Georgia pecans and delicious gourmet snack foods. The nuts are grown on Bailey’s 400-acre family farm and shipped, roasted, flavored, and packaged at Hope and Main, which has evolved to become Rhode Island’s premier culinary incubator. The facility is among the top ten in the country, and has launched nearly 300 businesses since 2014. “We are fifth-generation farmers,” Bailey begins, adding that the family has owned pecan trees for more than 22 years. “I am a second-generation pecan grower,” he notes, adding that his parents and brother currently maintain the sprawling family farm which is located in Moultrie, Georgia.
18
Bailey recalls that after high school, he worked in construction and attended college, but always preferred farming. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary, and later the pair later explored traveling around the country. They stayed in Rhode Island one summer in 2017 and after traveling a bit more, they settled in the Ocean State. “I heard about Hope and Main and decided to work with them to build a brand for our family’s pecans,” he shares. “I went through the various steps in the program. The leaders have been very helpful with networking and helped me to meet other people in the industry. They held my hand and taught me how to produce food safety and helped bring me to where I am today.” According to Bailey, the pecan company produces five flavors of gourmet nuts, including spicy cheddar, Vermont maple, tangy dill, natural, lightly salted, and sour cream and onion. The pecans are sold in four-ounce snack packs.
April 2022 | The South Coast Insider
“They are ideal for snacking,” he says, adding that the company also sells larger bags of natural pecans that are roasted and sold in larger bags for baking or restaurant use. “All of our pecans are sold online or at farmer’s markets and will also be sold in the future at selected stores,” Bailey adds. He shares that the Hope and Main Wednesday markets and similar events held at the facility continue to attract a steady stream of followers who enjoy the pecans as well as other food lovers who appreciate choice and unique foods. “The local community is very supportive,” Bailey observes. “It’s very important to learn what people like or don’t like and how things taste. Hope and Main has been invaluable in getting this feedback for our product development.” For more information about the American Pecan Co., visit their website at american-pecan.com or their Instagram, @americanpecanco.

There are many roads to personal freedom and discovering yourself.
S
ince every person is a diverse individual leading a unique life, The Heron Educational Center for the Human Spirit offers a vast spectrum of opportunities for finding harmony within yourself, with nature, and with your community. Whether it is yoga or meditation, art or nature, The Heron aims to provide the guidance, lessons, and tools necessary for holistic wellness, discovering your innate creativity, and reconnecting with your “authentic self.” When it comes to personal exploration and development, this local non-profit organization knows there is no one-size-fits-all approach – something that is reflected in their wide-ranging catalog of classes, services, and events. “Wellness is different to each person,” says Jessica Howard, Steward of The Heron. “We provide a safe space for people to explore and find fullness within themselves, to meet not just their physical needs but their spiritual, emotional, and mental needs. Both locations offer classes in yoga, meditation, and spiritual guidance, while the Westport location is the site of their wildlife sanctuary and community gardens.

The Heron offers eight seasonal celebrations that coincide with Earth’s natural rhythms of the year that include honoring the solstices, the equinoxes, imbolc, beltane, lammas, and samhain. They also offer “Music In The Gardens,” a series of outdoor concerts by local singer/songwriters on Saturday nights in July and August from 5 to 7 p.m. Their Wildlife Sanctuary features 22 acres that includes forests, shrublands, open fields, ponds, and a wide range of animals such as turtles, deer, coyotes, raccoons, hawks, and songbirds. The Community Gardens allow for people to rent personal spaces to grow their own food. The Heron offers 13 yoga and meditation classes each week, in both Fall River and Westport, in addition to running seminars in meditation and offering a 200-hour yoga teacher training program and individual spiritual guidance. “People are often surprised to learn that yoga and meditation aren’t what they thought they were,” says Molly O’Leary
of New Bedford, a yoga instructor at The Heron. “It’s not a strict fitness program. It’s open and welcoming – you can show up as you are. You don’t need to look a certain way to be good at yoga. We teach health at any size. People come in all different shapes and sizes, and one isn’t better than the other.”
Spiritual flexibility
“Yoga is a good outlet for physical and emotional tension,” says Marianne Robinson, 63, of Fall River, a member of The Heron who has been visiting the center since 2018. “You can start doing yoga at any age. It’s about gentle movement. If you can breathe while moving your arms and legs you can do yoga.” The Heron’s yoga and meditation classes are for people of all levels, including beginners. “The Heron has a kind and welcoming atmosphere,” Robinson says. “It’s inclusive, it has a sense of belonging. It’s been empowering for me.” “The Heron can give you the tools to look within,” O’Leary says. “Yoga will give you stress relief while meditation will help you look inward and ask questions. You’ll learn about yourself and the world at the same time. Don’t be scared of what’s within you.” “We want you to feel free to be who you are,” Howard says, “to move the way you want to move, express your thoughts, and embrace your individual identity while co-existing. We’re all on our individual path but we learn to see our interconnectedness, and cultivate harmony and our relationships.” “There are multiple facets of wellbeing – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual,” O’Leary says. “A lot of people come to The Heron for yoga, but they are often introduced to other programs and opportunities.” “You can only plant seeds with someone,” Howard says. “After that, it’s up to them as to what they want to do with it, how they want to nourish it within themselves. Our aim within our space and programming is to provide opportunities to grow sustainably.” The Heron can be accessed online at theheronstudio.com.

ON MY MIND
A third Childhood by Paul Kandarian
I can’t think of anything more rewarding than being a grandparent.
I
know I do go on about that on social media and here, but when something makes you that happy, you share. And it’s especially gratifying when that sharing is with folks of kindred spirit, be they other grandparents or just folks who know the value of a love so deep and profound you cannot help but share it. I call my times with Mikey my “Best days ever,” and they are – every one. During the winter break in February, we had two extraordinary days, and as always, every moment was improvised, every plan evolving on the fly and every moment cherished. I cannot emphasize enough the joy this little man brings me every moment we’re together as he clambers into my heart and hugs my soul. We had a murky and damp Tuesday that week, and the foulness of the weather mattered little and was meant to be embraced –

danced in by one life force with boundless energy and another much older one trying to siphon some of that energy himself just to keep pace. As is our wont, we got in the car and said, “Okay, what now?” Mikey said

something about seeing a fort we’d happened on a month or two ago: Fort Wetherell in Jamestown. And another time, we explored Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven, a spectacularly located historic landmark ripe for running about and gazing upon.
The boy loves his forts, so I said, “You want a fort? I’ll show you a fort!” and down we went to Fort Adams in Newport, as grand and majestic a fort if ever there was one. He was wowed by the size of the place as we drove up to it in a semi-pouring rain, and when I asked if he wanted to get out and walk around he was out the door and pounding up a hill in a flash, perhaps
pretending to defend the fort from the British. Sadly, the place wasn’t open for tours when we visited and the rain was picking up besides. But undeterred, we walked down by the water and I tried teaching him the fine art of skipping flat stones over the water. His attempts were admirable if not successful, and we walked on, Mikey peering inside the fort, me regaling him with how as a young man when this fort was in serious disrepair, I’d scamper up the bramble-strewn ramparts and into it through ramshackle fencing and just sit on a dangerously wobbly parapet and stare into Narragansett Bay wondering what my future held. After that, we ambled over to another Rhode Island favorite of mine, Colt State Park in Bristol, a magnificent seaside conservation area where we walked over the old stone bridge just before the skies opened up and we ran back to the car, absolutely soaked to the skin and laughing all the while in the blessed spontaneity of shared company and love. Next day, we took the train to Boston, Mikey pointing out everything he found interesting which was virtually everything, and took in the New England Aquarium. We walked, and got so caught up in adventure, marveling at the water and buildings and pigeons and old ads painted on ancient walls in Fort Point, that I didn’t notice we were completely lost until we were pretty far from our destination. So just outside the Westin, I introduced Mikey to his first Uber ride ever. The driver was a Latino gentleman named Luis, and when exiting his car
outside the aquarium, Mikey cheerily said, “Adios, amigo!” much to Luis’s delight. Inside the museum was wallto-wall kids and parents and it was incredibly crowded and noisy and none of it bothered us because, as usual when we’re together, we are the only two in the room, the city, the planet, so devoted is our attention to one and another and all that is new that we share together. I know, I know, I do prattle on about my little man, unapologetically and enthusiastically but this kid… as we walked back to the train (the right way!) we were hurrying to get there but missed it by minutes, so we lounged and laughed on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, where Mikey just launched into this Seinfeldian riff on what it’s like to miss a train, passersby smiling at his show. And then he started picking up wayward bamboo sticks (using one to mimic an old man walking with a cane) and then near the flowerbed, insisting upon putting them back in their rightful spot with the fervent focus of a Boston parks-and-rec worker with OCD. Then we took the train home and I just watched him being captivated by everything flying by in a blur. “It looks like we’re in a time tunnel, Grandpa!” he laughed. When I asked how far back he’d like to go, the first grader said, “All the way back to preschool!” I like to think I had a pretty amazing first childhood. And when my kids were little, I had an even more amazing second childhood. But now, this one with the most amazing sidekick a grandpa could ever have? Best third childhood ever.
