THINGS TO DO
Summer on the South Coast! By Elizabeth Morse Read
While some of the traditional South Coast summer events were cancelled at the last minute, most have returned in a re-invented format, stripped down a bit, but every bit as spectacular as in summers past – and well worth the wait! There’s music in the air!
Nothing says “summer on the South Coast” more than the sounds of music everywhere! Catch the tail end of Newport Jazz Festival July 30 to August 1 (newportjazzfest.org) at Fort Adams State Park or else reserve a picnic table at the Onset Blues Festival on August 8 at the Onset VFW pavilion (onsetbay.org). New Bedford’s Summer Sound Series is back! Check out the free concerts in Custom House Square on August 5, 12, 19, and 26 and the on-site beer garden (ahanewbedford.org/summerseaport). There’s also Summer Sound Saturdays, with Live Art and Jazz in Wings Court August 14 (downtownnb.org) In the Providence area, there’s the Rhode Island Folk Festival on August
29 (providencefolkfestival.com), free concerts at the Blackstone Valley Trolley Station on August 12 and 26 (blackstoneparksconservancy.org), and the Brothers Osbourne on August 1 at Bold Point Park (riwaterfrontevents.com). There’s also the free Summer Concert Series at Plymouth Memorial Park on Wednesdays through September 1 (projectarts.com), the Music at Sunset Summer Concerts Series on Wednesdays through September 29 at Blithewold Mansion and Gardens in Bristol (blithewold.org), and the New England Blues Festival in Middleboro September 9-11 (nebluesfest.com).
Blasts from the past!
If your musical tastes lean toward the
oldies but goodies, head for Memorial Hall in Plymouth to hear Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes August 1, Three Dog Night August 19, Marshall Tucker Band September 3, or Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals September 17 (memorialhall.com). You can also enjoy the free Summer of Love concerts at the Onset Bandshell on Wednesdays through August 25 (onsetbay.org). And you can hear classic rock, blues, and jazz tribute bands, along with popular local and regional performers, at the District Center for the Arts in Taunton (districtartcenter.com), the Narrows Center in Fall River (narrowscenter.org), the Zeiterion in New Bedford (zeiterion. org) or the Spire Center in Plymouth (spirecenter.org). Onwards, Onset! By Sean McCarthy
Situated amidst the oceanside splendor of Buzzards Bay with its quaint Victorian charm, Onset Village is a valued destination for tourists and regional guests alike. In the summer it truly comes to life. August is a particularly festive time for this seaside segment of Wareham, with a wide range of locally-owned restaurants, services, and shopping opportunities. From ice cream and pizza to fresh seafood and waterfront dining, Onset caters to many palates. From beaches and live music to family-friendly outdoor events, it provides uniquely enjoyable experiences. “Onset is simply a magical place,” says Kat Jones, Executive Director of the Onset Bay Association. “It’s a very diverse and welcoming community. We are blessed to have this as a venue where we are able to host events that everyone can enjoy. It’s something very special – it’s a gem.” Live music will be available throughout August at the Onset VFW with the Onset Blues Fest on Sunday, August 8, and every Wednesday evening with the Onset Summer of Love Concert Series. August 4 will feature the Neal McCarthy Band, an electric blues jam band. The following Wednesdays will include the “yacht rock” of Rudderless (August 11), the classic rock of Gunpowder & Lead (August 18), and That Sixties Band (August 25). The Wednesday shows run from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Onset VFW is located at 4 Gibbs Ball Park Road in East Wareham, a mile from the Village center.

The 28th Annual Onset Blues Fest will be headlined by the Gil Correia Blues Band. The trio is fronted by Correia, a guitarist and vocalist who will also be the event’s emcee. The group is responsible for the 2011 album, “Tattoos and Blues” and will soon travel to east Tennessee to record a full-length album for Cool Tone Records.
"Onset is simply a magical place" The Blues Fest show will include three other bands, Bag Full of Blues from the South Shore area, The Born Yesterday Blues Band, and G & Friends from the New Bedford area. It will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will also include vendors, food vendors, raffles and games such as horseshoes. Tables for eight can be reserved for $60 by calling or texting to 508-725-2657 – otherwise bring your own chair and pay a suggested donation of $5. Traditionally, the Wednesday night concerts and the Blues Fest are hosted at the Onset bandshell, but the shows have been moved to the VFW this year due to renovations being made to the bandshell.

Art abound
Onset offers other social activities this summer. On Saturday, August 21, a streetart festival will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Chalk Full O Fun” will be open to artists of all ages and abilities to create chalk art outside the Wareham Town Hall at 54 Marion Road. For $6, artists will be provided a box of multi-colored pastel chalk and their own personal space on the sidewalk to create a design of their own making. This will be the seventh year for the event, which annually attracts about 200 artists. The rain date for “Chalk Full O Fun” is the following day, Sunday, August, 22. “People are so creative,” Jones says. “It’s amazing what you can do with chalk.” The Onset Beach Kite Festival will take place on Labor Day weekend, September 4. For $5, guests of all ages can build and decorate their own kites with markers, to be flown at Onset Beach at 186 Onset Ave. Now in its sixth year, the event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and attracts upwards of 100 participants. On Monday evenings, Shell Point Beach in Onset is the site of a Drum Circle. From 6 to 7 p.m., percussionists of all skill levels are invited to participate. For a suggested donation of $10, and weather permitting, the event is hosted by Sam Holmstock, a
former member of the popular regional band Entrain. “It’s a kind of meditative and relaxed experience,” Holmstock says. “You can get into a groove and stay there, it’s an opportunity for self-expression and it can have therapeutic value.” The Drum Circle draws from two-tothree dozen participants every Monday, playing percussion instruments that they bring to the event. Shell Point Beach will also be the setting for Beach Yoga classes every Wednesday and Saturday mornings, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and lasting for approximately 75 minutes per session. For a $10 donation, guests of all levels are invited to partake in the classes, weather permitting. Children can attend for free.

COVER STORY
Saving Westport By Brian J. Lowney
The pristine and picturesque town of Westport continues to remain forefront in the call to preserve open space and create prime wildlife habitats for residents to appreciate today and in the future. Since 1972, more than 4,700 acres of open space, farmland, and wildlife habitat have been permanently protected by the Westport Land Conservation Trust (WLCT) in partnership with the Town of Westport, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and many community partners and fellow residents who are eager to share the beauty of this important treasure. According to Brendan Buckless, Outreach and Stewardship Coordinator at the WLCT, the non-profit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to land conservation has recently undergone several new changes and developed new programs.
16
“Last November, we opened our new office at 573 Adamsville Road,” he began. “The property was purchased from the Diocese of Fall River and was turned into a beautiful park.” Buckless says that the property, which was purchased in 2018, was once home

to the St. Vincent de Paul Camp. The community rallied to save the 82-acre parcel, identified as a significant natural and cultural resource, in an effort to create Westport’s first community park. Now known as Westport Woods Conservation Park, the property contains 21 acres of open space, almost three miles of open trails through 61 acres of forest, and various natural play elements for children and families. “The park is a great place for picnicking and connecting with nature,” Buckless adds, noting that the protection of this property was made possible with funding from the Westport Community Preservation Fund, the Town of Westport’s Agricultural Open Space Preservation Trust Fund, Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, BayCoast Bank, and more than 175 private donors, many of whom who reside in the town. “The park is open throughout the year from dawn to dusk,” he continues. “This is
a non-traditional take on the concept of a traditional American park.” Buckless emphasizes that park visitors are responsible for managing trash pickup and collecting waste for canine visitors. The park is also handicap accessible. “The Children’s Garden harkens back to a different time,” the outreach coordinator reflects. “The garden encourages young people to develop a positive attitude for agriculture and horticulture.”

The longtime Westporter, who spends the majority of his working days outside in the great outdoors, describes his vital role in land conservation as “for the enjoyment of the public.” Buckless says that he also has developed a deep appreciation for native warm season grasses and other plants indigenous to the region and is busy planting and cultivating these grasses. In other developments, the WLCT has sold the former Santos Farm on Main Road. The large property was recently sold to a local family farm, now owned by Andrew and Shauna Ferry, who will own the property with Andrew's parents Mike and Deborah Ferry. The protected family farm will continue to operate as a working dairy farm. In conjunction with the Westport Cultural Council, the third summer Artist-inResidence program features sculptor and artist Andy Moerlein at the Westport Woods. The workshop will be conducted August 14-15, with a closing talk August 19, 6 p.m., at the DeDee Shattuck Gallery, 1 Partners Lane, Westport. Call (508) 636-4177 for more information. Written on the wind By Steven Froias
The New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal
2021 is proving to be a game changer for the looming offshore wind energy in our region. The combination of an administration in Washington, D.C. which shares the values and goals of the renewable energy industry, the substantial groundwork which has been laid to achieve lift-off from the coast of Massachusetts, and the maritime infrastructure the region is blessed by is coming into alignment. The significant milestones of 2021 must start with the momentous decision by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to greenlight the long-delayed Vineyard Wind 1 project off Martha’s Vineyard.
Vineyard Wind gets a green light
Vineyard Wind 1 is the nation’s first commercial-scale wind energy project. The small wind farm off of Block Island was something off a pilot project. But Vineyard Wind 1, which will stage from the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal, represents a first. When BOEM’s decision to permit the project was announced, Vineyard Wind CEO Lars T. Pedersen summed it up: it

was not about the start of a single project, but the launch of a new industry. “Receiving this final major federal approval means the jobs, economic benefits, and clean energy revolution associated with the Vineyard Wind 1 project can finally come to fruition.” The project design includes the world’s most powerful wind turbine, the GE Haliade-X, with a capacity of 13 megawatts (MW). It’s over 800 feet tall. The larger turbine capacity has allowed the project to reduce the total number of turbines from 108 to 62 – while still delivering a total capacity of 800 MW to Massachusetts ratepayers. The turbine layout, which features consistent spacing of one nautical mile between turbines, was endorsed by the

BCC’s Offshore Wind Institute
Meanwhile, the effort to grow the workforce necessary for an offshore wind energy industry now has the wind at its back, thanks to Bristol Community College (BCC). BCC has entered a global partnership with one of the world’s largest providers of offshore wind training, Maersk Training. The collaboration is designed to cement Bristol’s National Offshore Wind Institute role as the region’s leader in basic safety training and basic technical training programs certified by the Global Wind Organisation (GWO). BCC President Laura L. Douglas comments that, “This partnership will connect the college’s faculty and staff with the expertise of industry experts throughout Maersk Training’s expansive global network and will strengthen the development of employment opportunities for Bristol students in the offshore wind supply chain.” The curriculum envisions students learning aspects of engineering technol-
ogy such as electrical machinery, fluid systems, materials science, and strength of materials, and also receiving hands-on experience with assembly, installation, operation, and maintenance of wind power systems. Still in the planning stages, it is expected that BCC will open a dedicated offshore wind training facility near the New Bedford waterfront as soon as this year to accommodate the program.

A new Port Director
Finally, to help pilot both the offshore wind energy industry from the Port of New Bedford as well as its commercial fishing industry and more, the New Bedford Port Authority in July announced its new Executive Director, Justin Poulsen. (Former Port Director Ed AnthesWashburn resigned in February to accept a position in the private sector.) Poulsen’s resume includes nearly two decades of experience in the maritime industry, and at the time of his selection he served as Vice President and Execu-

The New Bedford Ocean Cluster is now an independent non-profit working with a range of private sector, public sector, and academic partners to establish New Bedford as the leading ocean economy on the East Coast Internet of Things (IoT) technology firm. Thereafter, the NBOC formally became a member of the Iceland Ocean Cluster Network, which includes clusters in Portland, ME; Seattle, WA; Connecticut, Alaska, Norway, and Iceland. Its mission was to work with a range of private sector, public sector, and academic partners to establish New Bedford as the leading ocean economy on the East Coast. That mission remains the same today. However, in order to be more nimble in the new offshore wind seascape it is now an independent non-profit agency. It’s managed by Xodus Group, a worldwide renewable energy consultancy, but has a local board of directors. Indeed, when helping to build and properly align the wind energy supply chain in our region, their motto is “Look Local First.” Recently the group announced its Board of Directors. Among its members are the current Mayor of New Bedford, Jon Mitchell, and a former mayor, John Bullard, serving as Board president. The focus of the New Bedford Ocean Cluster will remain the offshore wind energy industry as it is just in its infancy.

tive Director of PortNYC for the New York City Economic Development Corporation. There he oversaw PortNYC’s portfolio of assets, including cruise terminals in Manhattan and Brooklyn, rail, aviation, freight, offshore wind assets, and the DockNYC program. City of New Bedford Jon Mitchell commented on the appointment, “I’m pleased to welcome Justin Poulsen to the Port of New Bedford. He will bring broad and deep experience in maritime transportation, planning, and economic Federally insured development that by willNCUA enable him to hit the ground running as Port Director.” He will certainly have his work cut out for him. Since the start of 2021, the Port of New Bedford has been on the receiving end of nothing but good news regarding its future both as a offshore wind energy hub and as a commercial fishery. In May, 2021 it was announced that the Port remained the nation’s highest value fishing port for yet another year, bringing its consecutive run at the top to a total of 20 years. Going forward, it will now boast a new title: the birthplace of the offshore wind energy industry in the United States.

The WhoaZone inflatable obstacle course at East Beach, New Bedford
By the beach By Michael J. DeCicco
The wisest beachgoers in town will tell you to head south for the best summertime experience this year. By that, they mean the south side of New Bedford and East Beach, where a new floating water recreation center, The Whoa Zone, and waterfront dining at the new Cisco Brewers New Bedford complex are both already attracting a crowd. The WhoaZone off of East Beach is an inflatable on-water Wibit obstacle “ninja” course that is one of six successful WhoaZone locations in five states as far west as Texas. This is its first year in the city; it replaces the floating aquatic recreation course set up at East Beach in 2019 by a different company. This location is here in partnership with the City of New Bedford, explained operations manager Leigh-Anne Hall. The New Bedford native who now lives in Florida when not working for the WhoaZone company said this and every WhoaZone emphasizes variety and safety. "I call it 'American Ninja Warriors' meets 'Wipeout,’" she said. "There's always a soft landing. I tell everyone the
20
number one rule is to have a safe, fun time here." Each “obstacle” can be detached and deflated to make room for a variety of others. The whole idea, Hall said, is to frequently offer swimmers something different. There are more challenging obstacles such as the swings, the roller slide, the hurdle, the monkey bars, the roundabout, and the springboard. But less adventurous swimmers will still have fun on the flatter connectors in between obstacles, such as the balance beams, the roundabout, and the half-pipe. Safety rules include having to be at least seven years old, at least 45 inches tall, able to swim, and to wear one of the WhoaZone safety jackets to be allowed on the course. In fact, there is no other way to get to the course but swim to it. Its fifteen lifeguards on-staff are all Red Cross waterfrontcertified, assisted when needed by the city lifeguards on East Beach. communication between each other and a bullhorn for quick contact with swimmers. Plus, boaters are required to keep a safe distance from the course's perimeter. Hours are from noon to 5:30 p.m., and visitors must book a time slot through the website, whoa.zone/New-Bedford.
BEACH BITES
Just down the road, at the site of the former famed East Beach dining spot, Davy's Locker, now offers an expansive entertainment center of its own, Cisco Brewers New Bedford. The 1482 Rodney French Boulevard venue is a 3.5-acre entertainment complex complete with a stage for daily live music in the summer months, five outdoors bars, and Cisco Brewers Kitchen and Bar, a restaurant with two patios and a rooftop bar. Do the math: that's seven bars in total available onsite. The complex features lots of sand, outdoor seating, a beach, and, though still only in the planning stages, a dock for those coming by water.
Alongside the band stage, patrons will find four separate booths: one each for retail items, a brewery, a distillery, and a winery. They face an auditorium-sized outdoor seating area. The water's edge includes a boardwalk and even seating around a fire pit. It's no surprise to hear manager Jennifer McHugh say the new complex "has been extremely successful. There's been a waiting list every day ever since we opened on June 23." No reservations are being taken for dinner seating yet. she said. It's all walk-ins. That will change eventually, but she doesn't know when it will happen. Meanwhile, customers don't seem to mind waiting. After all, while they wait they get to sit at benches with a view of Clarks Cove. "People say they love seeing this property utilized," McHugh said. "People like having a place to sit and outside and enjoy the waterfront. We have had great online reviews on the friendliness and hospitality of

Cisco New Bedford replaces Davy's Locker, which closed in 2014 after approximately 50 years in business. The new complex is an offshoot of the famed Cisco Brewers Nantucket, a brewery known for its live music. It's a collaboration between Cisco Brewers and local restaurateur Steve Silverstein, who also owns the Average Joe's restaurant chain and downtown New Bedford's The Black Whale. History by the sands
At this time of year, also look for more of a crowd at the Fort Taber-Fort Rodman Military Museum nearby at Fort Taber Park. Bill Neiedzwiedz, president of the historical association that operates it, said the facility's attendance increases to up to 20 people in one day during the summer, accounting for much of the average visitor rate of over 8,500 people per year. He said summer attendance is usually walk-ins who say they didn't even it know it was here. Then they are pleasantly surprised. What do they come in to ask about? "It depends," Neiedzwiedz said. "A relative or survivor of a veteran will ask all different kinds of questions. When they see what we have, it changes the looks on their faces. It changes what they think this museum is about. It's more than they expected."
Each room of photos, uniforms, weapons, and other military memorabilia are mainly donations from the personal collections of local veterans or their families. Every war in the country's history is memorialized – from the Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War, to the Korean, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf wars – each in separate sections of the museum. There are even sections memorializing peacetime service. Neiedzwiedz said the museum is most proud of its display of the Medal of Honor local Civil War hero William Downey earned on May 24, 1864 at Ashepoo River, South Carolina. He volunteered as a member of a boat crew which went to the rescue of a large number of Union soldiers on board the stranded steamer Boston, and with great gallantry assisted in conveying them to shore, being exposed the entire time to a heavy fire from a Confederate battery. "He saved 300 troops of color," Neiedzwiedz elaborated. He calls it one of the museum's prized possessions, even though it is partly the reason they do not charge an admission. Federal law says a museum can't charge for admission if it displays a Medal of Honor. Not that this restriction bothers him. Nor does it harm the museum's mission. "This museum is not about war," Neiedzwiedz said. "It's about the veterans of our area who served. Honoring them. From the Revolutionary War to the present day."

ON MY MIND
On the road again By Paul Kandarian

he greatness of this country is its people, of course. But so is the greatness of the land itself, in particular out west, an area of America that this easterner in particular finds absolutely awe-inspiring. I was in Salt Lake City in early June to be part of a nationwide film release for “Witnesses,” which I’m a pretty big part of, showing the history of the formation of the Church of Latter Day Saints and Mormonism. The premier out there was mind-blowing enough in that the movie
quickly became the top faith-based film in the country (a genre that I frankly didn’t know existed until recently) and also shot up to the number four movie in the country overall. And while there, the travel bug bit hard as always, so on my free day from press appearances and such, I took off with no known destination in mind to poke about one of the most beautiful necks of the woods (or rather desert and mountains) of the Great American West. I-80 looked promising, so I bombed
all things open road, always have been, loving the uncertainty of what's around the next corner, even when there aren't any corners to be uncertain towards. Here are miles and miles and miles of blessed nothingness giving a soul time to imagine and ponder and look out upon nature, all of it beautifully desolate and unlike anything back East. I saw railroad tracks just filled with train cars slowly chugging toward California, I suspect, seeming hundreds of them far as I could see, making me wonder about the power
The Bonneville Salt Flats are bland, bold, and beautiful, sprawling white and blindingly bright, stretching from highway to the towering, bleak Silver Island Mountains down that highway with its identical route number and speed limit, topping 90 at times and getting passed nonetheless. But hell, these roads are straight as the top of the T in the state’s name and way longer than your eye can take you, so anything happening up ahead, well, you got time to dodge. I am absolutely in love with

I may be an old man but in new adventures like this I’m a kid in Mother Nature’s candy store, stopping, gawking, tasting figurative beauty and sometimes literal; at both the Great Salt Lake and the Bonneville Salt Flats, I tasted water and salt and found them – salty, of course, wicked salty as we say in Boston, the lake so salty it is devoid of fish and most living things save for the most prolific brine
