Kilburn Mill at Clarks Cove, located at 127 W. Rodney French Boulevard, has undergone an amazing renaissance in the past few years. The building rose to national (and even international) prominence last summer and into the fall when it hosted the New Bedford Whaling Museum’s restored “Grand Panorama of a Whaling Voyage ‘Round the World.” At over 1,200 feet, it was billed as the longest canvas in the world. When the museum undertook the restoration, with plans to exhibit the painting upon completion, they faced a dilemma. What space could accommodate such a huge and magnificent treasure? The museum learned about ongoing renovation efforts at Kilburn Mill and made the connection. The giant historic building had the space and cultural bona fides to host the Grand Panorama. The building’s crew swung into action and carved out an amazing 21-thousandsquare-foot space in the building, overlooking scenic Clarks Cove, which could contain the panorama. The stunning renovation of the space included refinished hardwood floors, sand-blasted ceilings, modern climate control equipment, and specialty lighting. It was also built to accommodate all the featured events associated with the exhibition of the artwork, which included catered affairs and performances. The panorama has gone back into storage, but the space remains. And it’s in that space where Kilburn Mill at Clarks Cove will be hosting weddings, corporate functions, and other special events going forward. Kilburn Mills was built right after the 20th century dawned around 1910. It’s an imposing red-brick structure which in total contains a half-million square feet of floor space. Originally a textile factory, it’s perhaps best known as the longtime home of Madewell Manufacturing, a jeans and clothing company which still exists today, but as a boutique brand-name only. It ceased garment manufacturing operations at Kilburn decades ago – and the building’s second act began. It gradually

became home to a number of small businesses, many artist studios, and destination places like New Bedford Antiques at the Cove and the Judith Klein Art Gallery and Studio. The building’s current owners purchased it several years ago and have kept all of that dynamism going even as they find new uses for the real estate, like the exhibition, convention, and reception space. available even as the building is busy becoming a multipurpose facility for the city. The New Bedford Farmers Market moved their indoor winter market to the building this year. It’s held on Thursday afternoons and every other Saturday morning. A second floor boxing gym just announced monthly “fight nights” featuring professional boxing. The first is scheduled for Saturday, February 9. Also, a new Yoga studio and a vintage clothing shop recently opened at Kilburn.

attracting creative, entrepreneurial tenants at a time when the City of New Bedford has invested in some important municipal projects in the south end neighborhood the mill calls home. The recently-completed Cove Walk runs beside the building. It was constructed atop the hurricane barrier that has long defined the waterfront in this part of New Bedford, called the “peninsula.” Now it’s become the city’s boardwalk. The graceful structure flows down to the street right beyond the Kilburn parking lot to meet the municipal beaches. Those beaches have come alive the past couple of summer seasons thanks to walking and biking paths and popular outdoor music and dancing events every month called “Reggae on West Beach.” The afternoon happenings feature live Reggae DJs at the West Beach Pavilion spinning Roots, Rocksteady, and Early Dancehall sounds. Last year, there were four editions, each held on the last Sunday of the month. In 2019, it is expanding to at least six dates. Further down W. Rodney French Boulevard, you arrive at Fort Rodman and Fort Taber. The destination point has a military museum and fishing pier and hosts special events like a food truck festival that draws thousands of people to the city. This year, the Food Truck and Craft Beer Festival at Fort Taber is expanding to two full days from one. It will take place on Saturday, September 28 and Sunday, September, 29. The crew at Kilburn Mill know that they’re in the right place at the right time – at the gateway to New Bedford’s peninsula. They stand ready to turn any special event in their renovated space a success. It’s part of the heritage of this great industrial space, transformed for a new future. If you’re looking to make a little history for your own journey into the future, Kilburn Mill at Clarks Cove just may be the South Coast destination for you. pen until February 24, “Ansel Adams in Our Time” is the newest exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The exhibit looks back ward and forward in time – his iconic black-and-white photographs juxtaposed with the work of those who inspired him and those who he later inspired. Trace the images through time, first taken by photographers who pioneered capturing nature on film, carrying their bulky cameras and glass-plate negatives into the wilderness on the backs of mules. See the images taken by Adams himself, establishing him as the preeminent photographer of all time. And finally, admire the work of his contemporaries – more than 20 present-day photographers who have not only captured many of the same locations as Adams did, but who have used their art to express messages and opinions about the environment and our impact upon it. Adams’ work was last on display at the MFA in a major exhibition in 2005. This exhibition is even larger, so don’t miss this opportunity to admire the works of an American master!

Good vibrations By Elizabeth Morse Read
Imagine waking up in the mornings feeling refreshed, ready for whatever the day brings, able to focus on your daily tasks and the people around you, without constantly feeling distracted, anxious, or irritable. What would it take to get you to such a relaxed and peaceful state of mind? A two-week vacation in Tahiti? A visit to an all-day spa? A twenty thousand dollar raise? But there are some things that money just can’t buy. Something as simple (and free) as meditating for twenty minutes a day or taking a quiet walk through the woods or immersing yourself in restful sounds can bring you a peace of mind you didn’t think possible. And you don’t have to join an ashram or change your religion to learn these simple, ancient practices of mindfulness. 10
February 2019 | The South Coast Insider
What is mindfulness?
“Be here now.” – Baba Ram Das (Richard Alpert) Mindfulness, a component of all forms of meditation, is the intense and unconditional concentration on the present moment, stripped of outside distractions, random thoughts, or negative emotions. Whether it’s focusing intently on the textures and flavors of a meal, on the feel of wet sand on your toes, or on the birdsongs in your own backyard, being-in-the-moment allows you to slow down and enjoy each daily experience to the fullest. Over time, practitioners of mindfulness become more compassionate towards others and better able to handle the ups and downs of life. No matter how cluttered your life is with details and demands, you can always carve out a few minutes each day to sit comfortably and quietly, cut off from the noise and nonsense. Let your head drop a bit, lower your eyelids, and breathe slowly in and out, in and out. If your mind wanders back to all that noise and nonsense, or you start “thinking” about the rest of your day, calmly bring your mental focus back to being aware of nothing but the moment.

– Mahareshi Mahesh Yogi Mindfulness and meditation are two sides of the same coin. Like yoga, they have their roots in ancient Hindu, Buddhist, and Taoist traditions from the Far East. Starting in the 1960s, these practices were introduced in the western world as a secular means of reducing stress and achieving inner calm. While there are common elements to the different kinds of mindful mediation, it’s good to explore how which type might be better suited to your personality and lifestyle. For instance, spiritual meditation, like prayer, requires silence and is often enhanced with aromas like incense. Focused meditation concentrates on using the senses – staring at a candle flame, listening to your breathing – to keep your mind from wandering. Movement meditation, whether yoga, tai chi, or gentle dance, is beneficial for people who prefer action to sitting still. Chanting meditation, whether using a personal mantra or sound like “om” repetitively, would appeal to someone who

doesn’t enjoy complete silence or trying to focus on their breathing. The best-known and most-studied form of meditation is Transcendental Meditation, which is more structured than other forms, and appeals to serious practitioners.
A breathe of fresh air
The world is too much with us; late and soon, Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers; Little we see in Nature that is ours; – William Wordsworth Spending “quality time” outdoors is good for everyone’s physical and mental health, no matter their age – not just children on school vacation. A 2001 government survey found that Americans spend 87% of their time indoors and 6% enclosed in a vehicle. But our species did not evolve physically and psychologically to spend so much time cut off from the outdoors, a stranger to Nature. A specific type of mindfulness meditation is the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku – “forest bathing.” It is not a brisk “nature walk” or a grueling hike – it is a quiet, slow stroll focusing only on the therapeutic sights, sounds and smells of the oxygen-rich outdoor world. Blood pressure, heart rate, and stress hormones drop, and immune function increases, which brings on feelings of relaxation and well-being. By being mindfully focused on the natural setting and their place in it, whether it’s an empty shoreline or a snowy woods, people who practice shinrin-yoku are less likely to be mentally obsessing over squabbles at home or problems at work for a brief period, thereby reducing depression and anxiety.
Mindfulness here and now
“Each morning we are born again. What we do today matters most.” – Buddha 12

Here on the South Coast, the Buzzards Bay Coalition has teamed up with Anchor Yoga of Mattapoisett to host free “Mindfulness Walks” at our many conservation areas, nature reserves and parks. These walks are conducted in a deliberately slow pace in social silence – without digital devices. To find one near you, go to savebuzzardsbay.org/discover/events. In addition to offering classes in many types of yoga and meditation, Anchor Yoga offers a ten-session course in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), which introduces participants to the art and science of living mindfully, using meditation and mindful movement to cultivate awareness and reduce stress. The MBSR course was first developed at the UMass Medical School and is now used in more than 200 medical centers, hospitals and clinics worldwide. The program teaches participants to develop “present moment awareness,” and to discover each person’s habitual response to stress and how to change those responses, allowing them to react more patiently and compassionately with themselves, loved ones and other people in their lives. MBSR is particularly helpful for anyone suffering from pain/medical issues, job or family stresses, anxiety or depression. To learn more, go to anchoryoga.com.
Music of the spheres
“Paradise is not a place. It’s a state of consciousness.” – Sri Chinmoy Psychoacoustics is the study off the effects of sound on the human nervous system, and how certain sounds can speed up healing, reduce stress and enhance learning. Many of us have dozed off or “zoned out” listening to the repetitive sound of ocean waves. And all of us have been rattled by the sudden shriek of a siren, a blaring car horn, a child screaming or an alarm-clock buzzing loudly. Sounds can soothe us or stress us, sending our hearts hammering and our blood pressure ratcheting. And, increasingly, our lives are being disrupted by the incessant “dinging” of our cell phones 24/7, which keeps our stress hormones elevated. A Gong Bath “sound meditation” is a form of mindfulness meditation that’s growing in popularity, employing sound waves that resonate with our brain waves to bring them into synchronicity. Think of it as a “sound massage” that penetrates every cell in your body. Unlike listening to structured music, immersing yourself in the abstract vibration of gongs allows your brainwaves to shift from normal beta waves (waking consciousness) to beta waves (relaxed consciousness) and then to theta waves (meditative state). The Sandywoods Center for the Arts in Tiverton offers Gong Sound Bath sessions on a monthly basis, incorporating gongs,
crystal and metal bowls, bells , and chimes to restore a sense of peace and relaxation. The Center also offers classes in JourneyDance, an active mindfulness exercise to get out of your thoughts and into your body-awareness. To learn more, go to sandywood.org/classes.

Spread the love
“If we learn to open our hearts, anyone, including the people who drive us crazy, can be our teacher.” – Pema Chodron By uncluttering your mind and focusing on the moment, you are better able to be patient and to react with kindness towards others. It increases self-awareness about your own behaviors and negative reactions. Mindfulness also improves your ability to learn, remember, and pay attention, no matter the task. Most importantly, practicing mindfulness has proven benefits to your health, both physical and mental. Stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline have negative effects on your body – elevated blood pressure, headaches, muscle stiffness and cumulative damage to your body’s cardiovascular and immune systems. They also interfere with your memory and ability to learn. When your mind reaches a more relaxed state, your body releases the “happy hormones,” endorphins like dopamine and serotonin. These natural opiates relieve pain and stress, and trigger feelings of euphoria, self-confidence and invigoration, thereby decreasing depression and anxiety. Over time, practicing mindfulness helps people overcome self-destructive behaviors, like overeating or substance dependency, and negative patterns of thinking that lead to insomnia, relationship conflicts, and psychosomatic disorders. In addition, mindfulness meditation allows you to focus on “loving-kindness,” compassionate thoughts for those who are grieving, struggling or suffering, both near and far, as well as on forgiveness for them – and yourself. Imagine a world where everyone wakes up in the mornings feeling refreshed, ready for whatever the day brings, able to focus on daily tasks and the people around them, without constantly feeling distracted, anxious, or irritable. Start practicing mindfulness.

ON MY MIND
By Sean McCarthy
A child’s children By Paul Kandarian
Anyone who knows me knows this to be true: I am unabashedly a blubbering tower of sentimentality. And if you know me you know what triggers me most, that basically being anything child-related; my grandson, memories of my kids, me being a kid and missing my parents, me watching happy kids with loving parents, me watching sad kids with not-so-loving parents. Not long ago, as I was (uncharacteristically) cleaning up my workspace, I happened across an old disk drive. I plugged it on and found a file about my son. There were my thoughts at the time of his drug addiction, and then his recovery, and then my letters to him when he was at war, in the Army eight years ago. It’s a very long story but the gist of it was that he came home, fell victim to the disease of addiction even harder, got clean and has been for more than four years now, I say rapping my knuckles against my head as one would wood. I could win the lottery every day from now through forever
14
February 2019 | The South Coast Insider
and never be so blessed as to have my boy back. I started to read those letters when I found them on the forgotten hard drive, but could not. It was too much, still, after all these years to put myself back in the position of being a father with a son seemingly hell bent on killing himself with drugs. It was too much, still, after all these years, to put myself back in the position of being a father with a soldier son at war and not knowing if he were dead or alive, or dying and calling out my name. At the time he was in Afghanistan, I couldn’t watch the news, or war movies. There’s a crushing scene in Saving Private Ryan where a dying soldier begs another to give a bloodstained letter to his dad. That scene then and now always always makes me cry. So does the song “Bring Him Home,” in Les Miserables. I’m an actor in a group that does a play, Four Legs to Stand On, with our nonprofit Creating Outreach About Addiction Support Together (coaast.org). I wrote the monologue at the end where the dad begs the son to get help, a parent wracked by fear, anger, desperation, frustration, uncertainty, failure.
And there is no better example of being in the moment than a child. Watch them play, laugh, live, love, thrive. Another recent day, not long after finding those forgotten files, I found a box I needed for something. I emptied it and spilling out were my son’s baby sneakers, a Boston Bruins bib, and essay books he’d written as an 8-year-old. There was also a hand-written misspelled card, gushing “Merry Cristmas Dad!!!” I couldn’t open it. I didn’t have to. I just stood, flooded by memories. And wept like the child I still am at my core. I guess I say all this because every so often I realize we have to respect and remember the preciousness of youth, our own, our children’s, all children’s, all over the world. In the practice of mindfulness, mediation, Buddhism, Zen, what have you, at the core of all of that is being in the moment, for this moment is truly all we have. And there is no better example of being in the moment than a child. Watch them play, laugh, live, love, thrive. That moment is all they know. That moment is all they need. Adulthood and so-called maturity comes soon enough, too soon, merciless and swift, beating that innocence deep inside us only to emerge every so often when reflecting on memories, reading old letters and cards, finding baby shoes. In that moment of sobbing sentimentality comes a flood of remembering the best – and sometimes worst – times of our lives. Children almost always turn me into a blubbering tower of sentimentality. It’s that simple. And that necessary.

The play is fiction, symbolizing families in crisis over the disease of addiction, but all of it, including the words spoken to my character son, is based on the reality of the agony of addiction and its impact on those who ache for the addicted. Those words are the words I spoke or shouted to him, at him, in those turbulent times that are thankfully behind us. My son is also involved with COAAST, and he and I wrote essays about our side of his addiction, called “Resurfacing,” done in conjunction with the Harvard Medical School’s Health Story Collaborative project. I’m in it as myself, and another actor plays my son, and we’ve done it for Harvard and the Boston VA with many more performances to come. I am beyond proud of this project, and my son’s part in it. Turns out he’s a pretty good writer. No idea where he got that from. Every so often, we call each other, after going long stretches without talking, and that’s okay – we’re busy for all the right reasons. He’s very stressed with schoolwork and life and finances, and at times like this, when my son and daughter are stressed about anything, I always wish I could erase all their troubles, make them my own, fight their fights. I cannot, and that always saddens me.

Beats of the heart By Sean McCarthy
The myriad memories of love always seem to have a soundtrack. Passion, struggle, loss, and the return of hope are captured and expressed in the rich universe of love songs. They connect with us, delving into our precarious inventory of experiences from yesterday and today. In our dreams or in our tears, love songs reach us uniquely and invaluably. They tell our story – inspiring and counselling us, consoling and comforting us. Love songs are the tireless companions on the journey of the heart.

W
ith Valentine’s Day being celebrated this February, The South Coast Insider asked local music fans what their favorite and most memorable love songs are. Jason Kelley of Dartmouth is a popular local songwriter and front man for the J Kelley Band. He has written his share of love songs and he points out the ingredients for a successful love song. “A great love song has to have the right balance of sincerity and emotion without falling into clichés or corniness,” Kelley points out. “It should make you turn the volume up at home and turn your kitchen into a dance floor. A great love song gets you caught by other drivers at a red light belting out the chorus. A great love song makes you realize you don’t have to go through this life alone. A great love song conjures magic and transports you through time and space to that specific moment, even if that moment is imagined.” Kelley is not alone in his penchant for love songs. Numerous people from the South Coast were sampled to find out what their experiences have been. For Katherine Schleich-Medeiros of Little Compton, a love song that articulates longevity in a relationship is of importance and relevance – “Grow Old With

Me” by The Postal Service appeals to her for this reason. “I like this song because it brings a lot of emotion with thoughts about longevity in a relationship,” she points out. ”I first heard it on the CD ‘Instant Karma: Amnesty International’s Campaign for Save Darfur.’ My thoughts about love songs are the ones that reflect not the immediacy of love but the longevity and commitment that time can bring as we grow in a relationship seems to affect me more strongly and have a greater impact for me. “Romance is a fleeting experience, however, enduring love is one that you hold onto for an extended period of time and so this song reflects that. When we think about Valentine’s Day and love this song represents love to me.”
I love that song!
“Asking what someone’s favorite love song or any other kind of song is like asking a parent to pick a favorite child,” says Justin St. Pierre of New Bedford. “You may have a favorite for a little while but it’s hard to pick a favorite from all of the music that’s been made. “That said, a love song that I’ve always had a soft spot for was ‘Save Your Love’ by Great White. When I was a kid I was really shy and whenever there was a girl I liked instead of talking to her I remember going home and putting that song on
and just daydreaming – obviously life was always better in my dreams. I’d listen to it over and over again which was a pain because in the day of cassette tapes you had to keep rewinding it trying to get it back to the start of the song again. I’ve always been a dreamer and that song was a big part of my soundtrack when I was young.” Kelley also has a pair of songs that take listeners through different elements of love – “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys and “I’m In Love” by Wilson Pickett. “‘God Only Knows’ might be the greatest pop song ever written and recorded,” he says. “That song is a lament touched and recorded by genius. It has qualities of simplicity but it’s also epic. The sentiment is completely pure and relatable and without any pretentiousness. It’s the perfect blend of melody, arrangement, and lyric. The last 40 seconds could make anyone get married.” ‘“I’m In Love’ has zero fat,” he says. “It’s very simple and doesn’t waste any time or energy getting to the point. It’s powerful but sweet, sensitive but masculine, a passionate yet visceral declaration and completely relatable to anyone. I defy anyone not to sing along when the horns take the song out at the 1:59 mark.” For Joe Reilly of New Bedford, a certain Rolling Stones’ song takes him back many decades to the time of his first love. “Lady Jane,” written by Brian Jones, was a song that he fell in love with while being “emotionally affected” by a girl named Natalie. They were 11 years old. “That song has remained my favorite love song to this day,” Reilly claims. “I bought a 45 of it and I played it over and over again and it has stood the test of time for sure. I still have a copy of the song but I have no idea whatever became of Natalie.” Marie Angeley of Taunton, favors a song that includes more than just one kind of love. “‘In My Life,’ by The Beatles is special to me because it doesn’t just talk about that one special love in your life, it also talks about the different varieties of love as well. In the end it’s written for one special person but not without talking about the other forms of love we have in our lives. “I first heard this song when my husband shared it with me and it kind of brought me to tears. It makes me think about relatives and neighbors and all of the people we love in our lives.”
When Lela Anderson of New Bedford hears the song “All of Me” by John Legend it still puts tears in her eyes. “The reason this is my favorite love song is because my long-term boyfriend called me one day and told me to turn on the radio because he had just heard the most beautiful song and that it reminds him of me. I heard it later in the day and it brought me to tears. It was so like him to think of me with the words to that song. It’s a very deep song about a man expressing his love and connection to his woman. Each time I hear it it puts tears in my eyes – it means so much to me. It touches every emotional connection that we have for one another, past, present and even future. It takes me to a place of warmth, comfort, love, understanding, unconditional love, acceptance, beauty, and soul. The most important lyric to the song is ‘All of me loves all of you.’” For Alycia Roderick of New Bedford, a cure for the unsure comes from the song “Shower Me With Your Love,” by Surface. “When you go through times in life and in relationships it kind of makes you question things – ‘is it real or not?” she says. “I sometimes ask a lot of questions about a lot of stuff. So when you’re in a new relationship you wonder about things sometimes, but when my partner played that song for me and said that it was ‘our song,’ it made me stop questioning. It made me lose all the doubts that I had and it made me feel like it was real and that love was real again. I always said that I wasn’t someone who likes all that mushy stuff but it still puts some tears in my eyes each time I hear it.”
Bells and beyond
One of the most popular locations for love songs are weddings. “I Built This Garden For Us” by Lenny Kravitz was the song that Sean FitzGerald and Christine Maiato of New Bedford danced to at their wedding. “We chose the song because it is all-encompassing,” FitzGerald says. “I feel the verse of ‘In this garden there’ll be no war, no racial prejudice. You’ll be my brother of any color, you’ll just be with us. We’ll live each day in peace I hope that we will one day reach the rest of the world.’ This song stresses that the Garden of Love is not just one man and a woman, a man and man, or a woman and a woman.

The garden grows and is fulfilled by the need to have one another to share one’s life with. It doesn’t matter if it’s romantic or not – no man is an island unto himself.” “The period of 1967 until 1972 was a magical time for pop recordings,” says Tom Poitras of Freetown. “There was a perfect marriage of songs, inspired production, and wonderful artists. From the Beach Boys to the Beatles, Motown to folk rock and everything in between, the studios were producing amazing records. Two examples of those songs are Chicago’s ‘As Time Goes By’ and George Harrison’s ‘What Is Life?’ ‘As Time Goes By’ was heard at every wedding I attended – a simple yet elegant song and production! ‘What Is Life?’ is a fantastic song that also includes uplifting production.
One of my favorite love songs is REO Speedwagon’s ‘I Can’t Fight This Feeling.’ The lyrics, surprisingly, draw the listener back in time to their own story. Whether a successful relationship or unrequited love there is a time in every life when we are confused and uncertain of our decisions. When we are feeling as though we can’t wait a moment more to be with the person we love, often times we are unaware how frequently that person consumes our thoughts and time. That is the push and pull of love. The tide, if you will, that pulls us into this new unknown. The push that says no, not now. Ultimately, we may forget our reasons, but realize we were willing, again, to trust.” The favorite love song for Ethan Weiss of New Bedford comes from the silver screen – “As Time Goes By,” from the
Tom O’Leary of New Bedford has two favorite love songs – one written by a local artist and one by a world-renowned rock band. “’Curtain Call’ by J Kelley is my favorite local love song,” O’Leary says. “It has an incredible melody and the lyrics were written for his soon-to-be wife. ’I would dance with you to no music at all’ is a lyric that really resonates with me.” But speaking of couples, O’Leary also enjoys “Last Day On Earth” by Green Day. He had put it as part of a mix he made for his girlfriend when they had first started dating and years later he proposed with it as they danced in his living room.
Lyrically both songs and artists deliver the powerful emotion of love.” David Lynch of New Bedford recalls a song that had him thinking about love and life at an early age. “’Love Is Alive,’ by Gary Wright is a song from the mid-1970’s that gives me the feeling of youth before the realization of how harsh life is… Innocence, Crushes, Hot Wheels. Summers lasting forever. It was beautiful being young! I remember that song so well from roller skating at Hot Wheels, inside of my father’s car on the way to Pulaski School to play hoops, and on the way to Little League baseball games. I loved this song because I remember being completely happy when I heard it then – it filled me with hope to be in love someday and to enjoy myself while I could because I knew it all could change very quickly. I was living in those great musical times of the 70’s.” Eva Voss of New Bedford understands the ebb and flow of love.
movie “Casablanca.” “The opening notes hit me with such an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia and excitement, the well known and unexplored, all at once. The feelings conjured up are all-encompassing just like love itself,” he says. Richard Paradis of Attleboro and Brian York of New Bedford share the same favorite love song – “Red Light Special” by TLC. “’Red Light Special’ is a song that is important to me because it’s both a sexual song and a love song,” York says. “It’s a good song to make love to whether it’s in an older relationship or a new one. It’s given me some great experiences from one of my favorite bands while I was growing up.” For Paradis, the song was shared by he and his lover of 39 years, before he passed in 2000. “Whenever I feel lonely and I want to feel close to him I play this song and I’ll fall
Alan Korolenko and Helene Korolenko of Westport know immediately what their favorite love songs are. Alan enjoys “Someone To Watch Over Me” by George Gershwin while Helene chooses the ballad “The Constant Lover.” “This was an easy choice,” he says. “I’m a Gershwin fan and this is one of the best love songs ever. I have loved this song from childhood and I often use it in workshop titles at the New Bedford Folk Fest. The sentiment of watching out for the one you love appeals to me. I also like the slightly melancholy feel to the melody – it’s a classic ballad.” “My absolute favorite love song is an old English ballad from Sussex,” she says. “It’s a story of young love – the young fellow died and the young girl, unable to live without him tossed herself into the sea to join him. They could be seen on a clear night rolling over and over in each other’s arms. I love this tale of pure love transformed into a beautiful ballad.”

Classic tunes
Jeff Angeley of New Bedford is amazed by a song he says is “powerful:” “Ana Begins” by Counting Crows. “This is an extraordinary, really really amazing song,” he says. “It’s written from the perspective of someone who’s falling in love. The chords are very celebratory but the lyrics are nebulous and confusing. He doesn’t seem to be sure if he is someone who wants to be falling in love. The chorus comes in wonderfully and the song kind of ends with the last verse with the celebratory chorus feel but the lyrics to it are about how the woman is already starting to fade away. The feeling of love is there but the relationship is not there anymore. There’s a lot of detail to it and complexity of emotion and it’s handled deftly. It’s not a set of clichés as it goes through the complex emotions that come
glove’ and this person has to be led by the hand into love. It’s a love that is so intense that merely being in the presence of his (or her) lover brings tears to his eyes and thousands of violins to play. So vulnerable and ‘so much in love.’” “Sir Paul McCartney once sang “Some people wanna’ fill the world with silly love songs,” says DD Bastos of New Bedford. “People have been singing love songs since the beginning of time. One of my favorite love songs is ‘Love Me Still,’ a beautiful ballad written by Chaka Kahn and Bruce Hornsby. Chaka’s rich, soulful vocals are beautifully accompanied by the piano stylings of Hornsby. It is a song of immortal love, it’s beauty is cleverly written in a way that can be sung to a lover, friend or family member. The song transcends from past to present proclaim-

from falling in and out of love. It’s a powerfully well done song with well coordinated music.” Angeley also notes an affinity for the song “Old Dreams” by Hayden, a song he wrote for his daughter that is simple but greatly impactful. The lyrics read “I don’t need my old dreams… all of my dreams are your dreams, all I want is for you to be happy.” “As a parent,” Angeley says, “it’s the ultimate love song.” With “gorgeous and sophisticated chord changes, “Misty” is the favorite love song for Tom Short of Westport. Written by Eroll Gardner with words by Johnny Burke, the song provides Short with a “sweet melancholy in the verses but a more triumphant and soaring chorus.” He says that the song includes “beautiful and flowing melodic lines with great lyrics!” “The protagonist in the song is self-effacing, a bumbler,” Short says. “’Helpless as a kitten up a tree’ and ‘never knowing my left foot from my right, my hat from my
ing love through the years while asking ‘I loved you then, do you love me still?’ This timeless gem invokes passion and opens the heart to receive the true meaning of love. “As a global community we need love more than ever. In the words of Sir Paul McCartney, ‘What’s wrong with that?’” And for someone who is beginning to fall in love, the song “I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You” by Tom Waits resonates with Sara Shaughnessy of Westport. “This song reminds me of that sparky, excited feeling you get when you see someone you are ‘crushing on,’” she says. “Yet it is scary to act upon those feelings since you’ve been in relationships before and know how much they can hurt. ‘Do you really want to go through that again? ‘Cause falling in love just makes me blue.’ “’But it doesn’t matter what your logic wants sometimes, your heart has a say too, and the closing lyric is ‘I think that I

When the kids come in and they ‘Oh, this is the best place ever!’ that’s what we want.” Emma Jean’s is not just family-oriented; it’s also family-run. As Valentine’s Day approaches, their story is a reminder of the many different kinds of love
we can embrace this season. The name of the shop is a very special one to their family. “Emma Jean’s is named for our little angel Emma Jean Caldas Melanson, who left us much too soon,” says their website. “She was the granddaughter of owner, Cathy Melanson, and the daughter of her youngest, Samantha Melanson. In her short life, Emma Jean left a lasting impression in our hearts and her memory lives on in everything we do here at Emma Jean’s.” Melanson explains that the Christmas after Emma Jean’s passing, as her four daughters were baking together, one suggested that they could do this for a living. As they debated, Samantha, Emma Jean’s mother, suggested the name Emma Jean’s. The rest is history! Today, the business works hard to bring smiles to the faces of their customers, all the while supporting a cause near to their hearts, the March of Dimes.

THINGS TO DO
GET ORGANIZED IN 4 EASY STEPS!
O
kay, so it’s February already. How are those New Year’s resolutions coming? Was one of them to declutter your garage? Or to organize your pantry? Or to finally sort through all those boxes of photos? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you are in luck as we have at least three more winter months to focus on indoor projects. So, where should you start?
STEP 1 PROPER MOTIVATION The first step is mental, not physical. You need to sit down in a quiet place and have an honest discussion with yourself. Try to answer the question: why do I want or need to tackle this organizing/decluttering project? Having goals is important, but unless you connect your goal to a big enough reason, you will quit as soon as you get frustrated. The best formula for
24
By Rona Trachtenberg success is to have a clear and strong motivation or it will be difficult to even begin the process. Here are some examples of good motivating reasons: I need to clean out the guest bedroom (that is now being used as a storage area) because my grandchildren are coming to sleep over. I could use some extra money so I will sell some of my antiques or collectables on Ebay or Craigslist. My future in-laws will be visiting and I don’t want to embarrass my daughter/ son, so I will start to neatly arrange my spice racks and cooking implements in my kitchen. I just got a new car and I want to put it in my garage (which is now overstuffed with storage items) so I will remove all the unnecessary items that don’t relate to my new car. I am expecting another child and I need to reclaim that storage area for the new baby’s crib and bassinet. I am moving out of my home into a much smaller assisted living apartment. I need to take fewer belongings with me.
February 2019 | The South Coast Insider
Write down your specific motivation and post it on the wall in the room where you will be working as a visual reminder. Just imagine what you can do with all that empty space, once you have completed your project! Consider all the fun you will have opening up storage boxes and “visiting the treasures” inside that you haven’t seen for years or decades. Become empowered by finding a new owner for all those items you no longer need or want.
STEP 2 PROPER TIMING You need to carve out just one hour at a time, to tackle one small task in the room that you have chosen to organize. The term “baby steps” applies here. Set realistic goals. Work on just one pantry shelf, one utility drawer, one box of photos, the trunk of your car, or one corner of the garage. If you try to do too much, you will get frustrated, overwhelmed and quit
before you even start. Make sure that you have nothing else on your agenda to do during that one hour. No laundry machines running for you to stop and handle. No cakes baking in the oven to remember to take out. No kids to pick up from school. No pets to walk or feed. No guilt. No multitasking. This is your important hour to just focus on your organizing. Make sure that you are alone. No crying babies to deal with. No parents, siblings, or offspring making you feel guilty about discarding things that they believe are valuable or that they may have given you years ago.
STEP 3 HOW TO DECLUTTER The length of your organizing adventure is tied directly to how long it takes you to make a decision. For example, if you are holding a memento from high school and considering what to do with it, here are your choices: Throw it away because it no longer has any meaning to you. Give it to a thrift store, bazaar, or charity organization for someone else to use. This is good karma. Send it to your high school alumni association for their collection. Sell it to someone else who can appreciate it and you will make some money. Put it in a new box that you will fill with fewer, very special mementos. The famous organizer Marie Kondo, author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, strongly advises against foisting your “stuff” onto your children or grandchildren. You may think your belonging is priceless, precious, and invaluable, but Marie cautions that this isn’t always the case. Many siblings don’t want to wear what they consider “hand-me-downs.” And what had meaning to your generation may definitely not have that same special meaning to the younger generation. The quicker you can make these crucial decisions, the faster your decluttering and organizing will proceed.
STEP 4 ASK FOR HELP Asking for help does not mean you are weak. On the contrary, weakness is knowing you need help and not asking for it. A best friend might be willing to assist you in your decluttering/ organizing task. But this person must be “objective”… meaning that he/she is impartial, unbiased, unprejudiced and uninfluenced by personal feelings relating to your belongings. Research has shown that when you have accountability and support, your chances of success improve greatly. Another option is to hire a professional to either help you get you started or to work with you to finish the job. NAPO is the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (napo. net). Its members are trained to work with clients with all levels of decluttering needs. Their website has a button called “Find A Pro.” After you click it, fill in your city, state, zip code, type of organizer you need, and the directory will supply you with NAPO members within your region. Call and interview each professional to find the one whose skills and personality best fits your situation.
Seconds Count! Quality Resale for the Whole Family
JUST DO IT
So, you have the proper motivation, a time slot set aside, a small area chosen to organize, and confident decision-making capability. Now, just do it! I promise you that the satisfaction you will feel from organizing one small area will give you so much momentum and joy that will dive right into working on the next small area. When you are finished, reward yourself for a job well done. Bask in the glory of your accomplishment. If you took a “before” photo, then take an “after” photo and show it off to all your friends and relatives. Rona Trachtenberg is a member of NAPO. As owner of The Compassionate Organizer she enjoys seeing the great satisfaction her clients get from decluttering their living quarters and office spaces. If yes, then the Lloyd Center for the Environment has an outing for you! February 3: The Mid-Winter Owl Prowl Do you enjoy a good old-fashioned New England winter morning, especially before sunrise? If yes, this outing scheduled during hours of peak owl activity is for you! Screech, great horned, and barred owls are all resident species possibly encountered in the woods of Dartmouth. February 23: Mid-Winter Wildlife Walk What is there to see on the Lloyd Center property? A wandering owl, a flock of winter feeder birds, winter waterfowl in the estuary, or a small herd of White-tailed deer searching for food? Participants will locate what wildlife awaits, and observe the landscape through a “winter lens.” At the outing’s conclusion, the Lloyd Center’s resident screech owl “Koko” will be brought out for presentation. March 2 and 30: Cuttyhunk Seal Cruise Buzzards Bay is an important stopover location for overwintering marine wildlife, most notably seals of the Northeast region. A small sandbar called “Gull Island” is situated along the Elizabeth Island chain between Cuttyhunk and Penikese. Harbor, grey, and harp seals may be present, and Lloyd Center staff will provide commentary about these fascinating creatures. The boat docks at Cuttyhunk for lunchtime providing an opportunity to set foot on the island to venture through town,

March 16: Nature Discoveries Investigate nature through the seasons by reading thematic books and exploring the Lloyd Center. Live animal demonstrations, specimens to observe and touch, hikes, activities and crafts bring nature themes to life for Nature Discovery participants! March 20: Full Moon Owl Prowl Come along on the Spring Equinox which this year occurs under the light of the full moon, when night creatures have an attitude! Better yet, warmer conditions and a friendlier hour if thoughts of the winter prowl gave you shivers. March 26: Early Spring Woodcock Walk The fabled American woodcock (Scolopax minor) courtship flights are a true sign of spring that occurs across open landscapes often before the last snows have melted. Experience the spectacle at Noquochoke Wildlife Management Area in Dartmouth, a known staging area and site where the state manages habitat specifically for woodcocks.
