Was it really just a year ago when they shuttered the doors and rolled up the sidewalks? When we all retreated to the relative safety of our homes, cut off from friends, family and life as we knew it? We had been pretty spoiled here in the summertime, with our non-stop music festivals, seafood fests, outdoor performances and sunset concerts, Portuguese festas, and those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer on the South Coast.

Who said no news is good news? If this year’s summer events remain as pandemic-dampened as last year’s warm weather season it’ll be nothing but bad news. That’s why it’s good news that some things are still happening this summer season.

Summer in Onset

In Onset, some events are on schedule while others are still a question mark. “We’re hoping to do some summer events. Maybe the concerts,” said Onset Bay Association representative Kat Jones. She already knows there will be Sand Castle Day, July 17, with a rain date of July 18, and the Kayak Poker Run on June 26., from 9 a.m to noon, with a rain date of June 27. This longtime popular event has changed only its start-off point, to Dummy Bridge Beach, located off of Main Avenue in Onset. It will cost $25 to participate. Kayakers will collect a playing card at each stop along the route. The kayaker with the best poker hand at the end of the route will win a prize. Then there’ll be a pizza party and prizes awarded to finish the day. There are usually 25-50 kayakers participating in this annual event. As of this writing, the association is still working on the usually annual Summer Concert series and other event possibilities. It depends on how guidelines evolve on the next month or so, she said. “I’m sure everyone is in the same holding pattern.” The first of Onset Bay’s Summer Concert

series was to start on June 23. The complication this year is that the crowd limit under current regulations is 250 people, while Onset’s concerts usually attract around 1,000 visitors. “We are working on a plan,” Jones said. “Please stay tuned.” But, she said, it is looking good that Onset’s August festivals will go on as scheduled, albeit under pandemic restrictions and regulations. The 28th Annual Onset Blues Festival will be held on August 7, rain date August 8, and will feature free admission this year. The 7th Annual Chalk Full O’ Fun Onset Street Painting Festival will (hopefully) be held as scheduled on August 21, rain date August 22. In Fall River, your best source for a list of summer events or activities any time of year or even start your own event is the Creative Arts Network (CAN). CAN is an organization that creates and hosts arts and cultural events around the South Coast. Creativeartsnetwork.org,

serves as an online billboard for those attractions. “As the lead art and culture organization for the past seven years, we’ve supported arts, culture, and tourism in Greater Fall River,” said network president Sandy Dennis. “We’ve run over 100 events and programs in collaboration with organizations around the region.” CAN has built and continues to build strong collaborative relationships with key stakeholders throughout the Commonwealth, she said, including Mass Dot District 5 and Mass Coastal Railroad, which has led to noteworthy initiatives such as “Hortensia” The Hydrangea Project, which is enhancing property values and making the community more attractive with flowering plantings around the city. “We realize art and culture is not simply supporting a performance, concert, or visual art experience,” she explained, “it is an investment in change and positive economic and tourism growth within our communities.” The network is run by a group of dedicated volunteers through its Board of Directors and Steering Committee, she said. “We welcome participation and collaboration to increase and amplify awareness in an effort to continue building a stronger art and culture community.” In service to this goal, the website allows anyone to post their event online. The main advantage to allowing local organizations to do this, Dennis said, is “people won’t walk all over each other in scheduling their events. It helps prevent scheduling conflicts in the region’s monthly event calendar.”

Created by Portuguese-based lettering designers Mariana Branco and Emanuel Barreira of Halfstudio, and executed by local artist Gregory Pennisten, a new 40’ by 60’ mural called “Viva Fall River” was unveiled at Fall River’s Kay Building, owned by Anthony F. Cordeiro and family, a short walk from the Quequechan River Rail Trail. The mural celebrates Fall Riverites of Portuguese descent. The network started as AHA! Fall River through the Community Foundation of Southeastern MA in 2014 with a focus on highlighting the multitude of art, music, theater, charity, historical, and cultural events throughout greater Fall River. Since April 2017, it has been a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization with a target audience that includes not only residents but also visitors from towns on both sides of the Taunton River and Mount Hope Bay, and from Boston to Providence. “After three years working under the AHA label,” Dave Dennis said, “we realized this model wasn’t compatible with the needs of Fall River, not to mention the difficulty connecting with the AHA name. Our financial stability since then has allowed us to make the decision to move in a new direction to position ourselves to better meet the needs and demands of a gateway city. In 2017, through research, focus groups, and marketing specialists, we formed Creative Arts Network Inc. (CAN), along with a branding logo, then formed a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.” With Covid restrictions this past year, Dennis said, CAN has pivoted from live events to virtual events through its Facebook page and website. Some of the creative events started with ArtWeek at Home in May where it offered a week-long virtual event from art lessons, cooking

lessons, dance lessons, concerts, and crafts for kids. For Valentine’s Day it offered dance lessons, art lessons, instructions on how to set a perfect table, how to make that special drink, and how to make chocolate-covered strawberries. It has also sponsored two groups of local students from a local Community College for their class projects. The most recent class put together tours for National Tourism Week, May 2-8. CAN’s other most recent event was a collaboration with the Fall River Public Library for an Earth Day event. CAN has also taken on a role in working to have more public policy implemented around art and culture. Over the past year we have seen the newly formed Fall River Waterfront Cultural District, June 25 has been proclaimed Hydrangea Day, the City Council voted the hydrangea the official ornamental flower of the city, and CAN’s current proposal is for a formal Public Art Policy with the formation of a Public Art Commission. This summer, Dennis said, CAN hopes to return to small-scale live events such as an open-air art exhibit, a mural wayfinding project, the continuation of the group’s hydrangea beautification program, and a festival to highlight a variety of art and culture activities with a focus on the city’s restaurants and shops. Sometimes great things happen on their own. When this happens, you could say that the time was right since success is all about the timing. About ten years ago, Henry Harper and Harold Braggs got together in Detroit to have breakfast and discuss art. Just two friends enjoying each other’s company over coffee and eggs. Another friend joined them. Over the next decade it evolved into a weekly, standing-room-only event: the Detroit Fine Arts Breakfast Club. Simplicity continues to be its secret to success, adding more participants all the while. I joined myself nine years ago. There are no dues, no governing body, and nothing is for the financial benefit of its founders, Harper and Braggs. Before the pandemic, the group gathered once a week at the host eatery. Announcements of interest were made, artists showed their work, fielded questions, and considered on-thespot purchase requests from other attending artists, collectors, and buyers. Despite the name, the growing group was asked to gather during the restaurant’s more convenient dinnertime. They shared news, information, educated others, learned about the business of art, and continue to meet virtually on Zoom, which has increased its membership beyond Detroit. Normally, artists are isolated because of the time required to devote to their practice and to continually increase their creativity. Covid-19 compounded the isolation and has had an impact on both the individual and the collective mental health of the creative community.

When I related my weekly Zoom experiences with the group to my local friend and fellow artist, Kat Knutsen, she thought the Detroit Fine Arts Breakfast Club “is exactly what the South Coast creative community needs.” Covid restrictions made the need even greater. “Artists want to reclaim their social space,” says Kat. Making art in isolation is challenging. Isolation can totally consume the artist. But remaining positive, maintaining healthy work habits, and knowing the barriers to sales sometimes needs a good airing out in conversation with other artists.

Cafes were the default boardrooms where movements were launched As an art student, I remember being fascinated by the French cafe culture that the artists we were studying were so much a part of. At these cafes, they discussed the aesthetics of their individual and collective craft. The cafes were the default boardrooms where movements were launched. It was here that artists kept up with the news and formed friendships in a safe haven where they could openly express their opinion on art, life, and so much more. Coffee houses originated in 17th and 18th century England. They later evolved into continental Europe’s classic cafes. Artists began to display their work on the cafe walls. “Here, now, this is a ready-made culture just waiting to happen,” says Knutsen, who worked collaboratively as one of many production artists on the groundbreaking Oscar-nominated film Loving Vincent. Oddly, in our current American grab-and-go coffee culture, whether of the pedestrian variety or New Age artisanal coffee, this concept offers an excellent opportunity for artists to gather in a cafe-like environment. Finding a venue to provide an excellent, impromptu, or permanent rotating backdrop to display artwork while offering an opportunity to sit, eat, drink, and discuss art and local art news is a key component. “Henry [Harper] always called it ‘Breakfast Club,’” says Braggs, even when the gatherings shifted to the dinner portion of the host restaurant’s day attracting nearly a hundred artists, collectors, and anyone interested in or supportive of the arts per meeting. Harper said getting artists and collectors in the same room is a win-win situation especially since “a lot of artists are talented, but they don’t know anything about the business of art.” Knutsen agrees. “We need this concept for the South Coast creative community. A weekly place to gather, commiserate, catch up on the news about calls for submissions, upcoming exhibit openings, and getting to know the other artists practicing in the community... and that’s just for starters.” Attendees would buy food and drink off-menu, bring in work they have to show, be prepared to sell their work on the spot, and share their accomplishments. Every June, travelers from all over Southern New England visit picturesque Dighton to pick and purchase farm-fresh native strawberries, rhubarb, and other fruits, and enjoy the Dighton Historical Society’s annual Strawberry Festival, held this year on June 19, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Christine Pacheco, president of the organization that operates the WinslowDavis Museum, shares that “Dighton was once called the The Strawberry Capital of the World.” Pacheco says that Daniel Chase, his son Hon. Charles F. Chase, and Dexter Pierce introduced the culture of the strawberry to Dighton in the early 1860s. The berries provided a financial boon to local farmers. Boston was the largest market for the luscious berries and the “Strawberry Express” left the local train depot nightly with the day’s berries. According to local historians, signs in the famed S.S. Pierce Store and at Faneuil Hall proclaimed “Dighton Berries,” which local shoppers in the state capital proclaimed to be a high recommendation for the berries. For the next 50 years and longer, strawberries were the main crop grown in Dighton, but as the decades passed, the “Dighton Strawberry” faded. Its memory is perpetuated in the town seal.

“The Strawberry Festival is meant to be a community event,” Pacheco emphasizes. “The focus is on the history of the strawberry growing in Dighton. Every year

we receive a grant from the Dighton Arts Council to support this event.” She adds that the organization currently has about 30 members who will be selling

Strawberry spinach salad Dighton Historical Society member Joan Fournier shares the following recipe in honor of the upcoming strawberry festival: “You can play with the amounts of fresh spinach and strawberries,” she says, “but about 16 ounces of spinach and a pint of strawberries is a good beginning.” Remove the entire stem from the spinach leaves. Tear the spinach and slice the strawberries. Do not add dressing until just before serving, and keep in mind that the spinach will sink in the bowl once it’s added. Always use more spinach than you think you’ll need. Poppy Seed Dressing: 1/4 C. White Vinegar 1/4 C. Sugar

the Sun Farm with her husband Milton, notes that the festival attracts families from throughout the area who can also sit outside to enjoy sandwiches, coffee, and beverages, and purchase plants and flowers. “Our goal and our focus is on local,” she emphasizes. “The strawberries will be ready around the beginning of June and the season is short and lasts only for about three weeks. It’s short but very sweet.”

Spring rhubarb cake My cousin’s wife, Stephanie Lewis, writes: “This is one of several recipes I remember my grandmother making (including a rhubarb custard pie and strawberry rhubarb pie). The rhubarb keeps the coffee cake moist and adds just the right amount of tartness. It’s great for breakfast! Cream together 1/2 cup unsalted butter, 1 1/2 cups sugar, and 1 egg. Add alternately with liquid: 2 cups flour 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda 1 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tsp vinegar)

Everything ready for takeout. Lots of outside seating!

Add 2 cups diced (or minced) rhubarb stalks and 1 tsp vanilla

Springtime rhubarb pie Caitlin Teixeira, co-owner of Under the Sun Farm in North Dighton, offers this delightful rhubarb pie that she generously serves with a scoop of vanilla ice cream: Ingredients: 5 cups sliced rhubarb 1 cups sugar 5 tablespoons flour 1 1/2 tablespoons butter Optional: 1 teaspoon orange zest or 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon Pie crust of your choice Directions: Preheat oven to 425 degrees Prepare the filling: In a large bowl, blend the rhubarb, sugar, flour, and cinnamon or orange zest. Sprinkle an

additional tablespoon of flour on the bottom of the crust to keep it from becoming soggy. Pour the filling into the crust-lined pie pan. Dot with butter. Roll out the top crust. Dab the rim of the bottom crust with water to create a glue. Then place the top crust over the rhubarb filling; trim, seal and cut several vents. Bake for 15 minutes; reduce the temperature to 350 degrees and bake for an additional 25 or 30 minutes, or until a bit of pink juice bubbles from the vents in the crust.

returns Molly O’Leary and John Fernandes

Musicians love to play their new songs – especially after being away from live audiences for more than a year.

or many local artists the return to public venues will feature music written and recorded during the Covid-19 shutdown, to be shared with friends and fans excited to enjoy the new material in familiar social settings. The pandemic was a time of reflection and inspiration for New Bedford songwriter Molly O’Leary. A School Adjustment Counsellor for the Rodman Elementary School in New Bedford and a Yoga teacher at The Heron in Westport, O’Leary has recorded a 14-song album, “Holding Space,” at Bongo Beach Productions in Westport. A singer and acoustic guitarist, she is backed by her brother Tom O’Leary on drums, John Fernandes on lead guitar, Rob Massoud on bass, and Brianne Vieira on violin. The album’s lyrics are devoted to O’Leary’s personal experiences, including her struggles and recovery from anorexia, and the battles that loved ones have had with addiction. “It was definitely a challenge to go through those experiences but I’m super grateful to have music as an outlet,” she

says. “It felt very empowering and healing to write about my recovery process and personal experiences. I’m exploring mental health awareness in general, and dealing with the anxiety and how to cope with it.” O’Leary’s record includes the song, “Our Little School,” written about some of the students where she works who are experiencing issues such as social injustice and systemic racism. “I want them to know that we are there for them and that we care about them very much,” she says. “They should know that our school can be a pocket of change, love, and growth.” O’Leary will be playing songs from “Holding Space” during a number of upcoming local performances. On Thursday, June 10 she will be at the Drawing Room for AHA! Night in downtown New Bedford from 5 to 7 p.m. On Saturday, July 10 she will do an outdoor show at The Heron from 5 to 7 p.m. On the following Saturday, July 17 she will be at the SOAM Farmer’s Market in Swansea from 12 to 2 p.m., and on Saturday, July 31 she will be at Running

Brook Vineyard in Dartmouth with special guest Catalina Mazo from 1 to 5 p.m. The record release party will be celebrated at The Heron on Saturday, August 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. “Music has let me channel the different emotions I was experiencing and has helped me get through the quarantine,” O’Leary says. “It helped me to face all the difficult emotions rather than pushing them away. I’ve learned to be non-judgmental and accepting from yoga and meditation.”

SINGLE-TRACK MIND

Long-time local performer J Kelley had an epiphany as Covid began to take hold. Since he and his three bandmates were unable to perform live for fans, they began recording and releasing single songs. Beginning in May of 2020 with “Maureen,” an unreleased track from their 2019 album “Burning Season,” the group would release five more tunes in the next year. “It was important for us to stay in touch with our fanbase, and we were doing it in a new way,” Kelley says. “We have a lot of great fans and friends and we want them CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

to know we’re not done. We’re keeping the lines of communication open and we still want to put out new material – out of sight, out of mind.” Kelley says that economically the approach makes sense. “Rather than spending thousands of dollars to record a whole album every two years, it makes more sense to spend $300 on one song every couple of months. I always thought in terms of albums, now I’m thinking in terms of singles. It’s affected my approach to songwriting because I’m not writing for the theme or concept of an album. For the next year or two we’ll probably be releasing singles or four-song EP’s.” For Kelley it’s also a matter of keeping with the times.

“The more we learned, we had to change our thinking” “I’m finding that most younger people don’t have the attention span that I did at that time. When I was growing up people bought a CD, brought it home, read the lyrics, and listened to the whole album. They don’t do that anymore. Now they press a button and listen to one song.” Ironically, before the onset of Covid the band was thinking about releasing a double album. Now Kelley is entertaining the idea of releasing weekly acoustic mini-concerts. “The more we learned, we had to change our thinking,” Kelley says. But it was also important for Kelley to maintain the chemistry and interaction with his bandmates. “As a band, before Covid, we were gigging all the time and we were used to the communal experience of being with your best friends and hanging out together. It was a big chunk of our lives that wasn’t there anymore, but we rectified that because instead of playing live we were working on songs and going into the studio.”

The band’s most recent single, “Brutal Youth,” was released this May.

FINDING TALENT

The Covid shutdown allowed Fairhaven songwriter James Gagne to turn a setback into a comeback. After 22 years of playing guitar, Gagne broke his left wrist last June. Unable to form chords on his six-string, he began focusing on his lifelong desire of playing piano, an endeavor that changed his approach to songwriting. “My greatest musical heroes are Billy Joel, Elton John, and Bruce Hornsby, piano-based songwriters,” he says. “I’ve always wanted to be a good piano player so I was able to start working on that.” Gagne says that piano opens up a “whole new world of songwriting.” “It’s exciting,” he says. “When I write songs on guitar I create the melodies by singing. With piano I find myself writing melodies on the keyboard.”

COVID INSPIRATION

For 27 years, Eric Baylies has been at the helm of Baylies Band, an ever-evolving amalgamation of regional musicians that has performed locally and throughout the world. A New Bedford native and a para in the New Bedford School System, Baylies’ current lineup includes seven other members. After a two-month layoff last year, the group began rehearsing and recording new songs while socially distanced in the basement studio of keyboard player Chris Devona in Cranston. The fruit of those sessions is the album “Photosynthesis,” to be released on House of Watts Records in the fall. “My new material is a little darker and not as hopeful as I’d like to be,” Baylies says. “We’ve been able to take advantage of not being on the road which has allowed us to work on new songs.” Baylies and his sonic entourage are also in the process of recording another full-length album, “Madonna Lives In My Basement,” a collection of songs that includes guest performers such as drummer Brendan Canty (Fugazi, Eddie Vedder), sax player Dana Colley of Morphine, guitarist Makoto Kawabata of Acid Mothers Temple, and drummer/ guitarist John Drumbo French of Captain

Beginning in March of this year, Chris Guaraldi of New Bedford began making music with two former collaborators, bassist Troy Morin and drummer Dan Jagoda. After being laid off from his job as a production artist, Guaraldi boosted his creative output, recording demos of more than 60 songs and sharing them with his bandmates. “You can only watch so much tv and play so many video games, so I was writing a lot of music. I was much more prolific,” Guaraldi says. “Covid hasn’t really changed my songwriting perspective. My themes are going to be dark and dreary regardless of what’s happening. I didn’t write any songs about the pandemic because by the time we get back to playing live music nobody will want to be reminded about Covid.”

Sarah Donner is a New Bedford songwriter with a national fanbase. Playing guitar, ukulele, and piano, she has 11 full-length albums and multiple other releases in 20 years of performing. Donner has been resourceful during the last year. Although she says she has been less inspired to create new music, she has taken much effort to entertain friends and fans while keeping her performance chops up. ne thing I love about New England is the geographic and geologic diversity it provides for walking; you can literally hike from shining sea to purple mountaintop here (actually, they’re more green here) if you’ve a mind to. I ramble on about walking locally the way I ramble through the woods, but there are so many opportunities to get out and about, even in urban centers like New Bedford (Fort Taber Park, the hurricane barrier, the working waterfront) and Fall River (killer hills but great for the calves, and the newly opened Quequechan River Rail Trail is just spectacular). I like the farther-flung places as well, including a recent walk I took at Nickerson State Park down the Cape in Brewster, a marvelously hilly sprawl of 1,900 acres on land once part of the estate of Samuel Mayo Nickerson, a native of the area and a Chicago liquor distiller who made a bundle as a founding officer of the First National Bank of Chicago. I love learning the history of places I walk, and this one has a great past. A mansion Nickerson built nearby subsequently became a seminary and is now a major feature of the posh Ocean Edge resort. His family left this land to the state in 1934 to use as a park and it became the Commonwealth’s first state park and

in 1962 was made part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Many paths crisscross the property, but a most popular one winds around Cliff Pond for about 3 miles, a lake some 200plus acres big and hotspot for kayakers, paddleboarders, swimmers, and people

fishing. It’s not a hard walk but it can be a hardy one; there are steeper pitches in places, with roots and rocks to scramble over and downed limbs to duck under. Eight ponds dot the landscape, all formed by receding glaciers 10,000 years ago and none of them spring fed, relying on groundwater and rainfall to keep full. It’s a lovely, lush mix of vegetation here, with oaks and pitch pine in the canopy, wetlands dominated by maple and cedar, dunes populated by beach grass and shrubs. We just kept to the trail around the pond but another time I’ll have to take a deeper dive into the forest. The bad thing about the Cape, many think, are the crowds, and indeed in high season, it’s brutal down there. At least in non-pandemic times, traffic is thick and unmoving, people jam restaurants, bars, and beaches, and the only two bridges on and off Cape are clogged with annoyed parents and annoying kids. But that season is mercifully short – the rest of the year belongs to us, including winter but especially the shoulder seasons which are just spectacular and uncrowded
