There is free parking available. “The Huttleston Marketplace is such a friendly social occasion,” says Lisa Elliott, a Fairhaven weaver who has been a part of the event since it began. “People come with their kids and their dogs, and you can meet up with friends they haven’t seen in a while. It’s nice to see what people are making and growing, and there’s always something new and different to be seen.” “The Marketplace is full of creative

It’s like a family of friends and customers,” says Stephanie Sherman, owner of New Bedford Pottery Works, who has been at the event all five years. “Oftentimes you’ll keep in touch with clients. Someone may discover something in the summer and want to buy something for Christmas.”

History hikes and more

History students have opportunities to explore and enjoy Fairhaven with the Henry Huttleston Rogers Walking Tours, and the Pirates & Privateers Presentations. The Rogers Walking Tours take place from June to September on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. Beginning outside of the Town Hall at 40 Center Street, they explore the magnificent buildings in the village area that the powerful businessman donated to his hometown, and tells the tale of his rags-to-riches life. The Pirates & Privateers Presentation takes place Friday mornings at 10 a.m. from June through September. Weather permitting, the events take place at the Fort Phoenix flagpole at the south end of Fort Street. The tour includes detailed stories about the pirate treasure buried by Captain Kidd on Sconticut Neck, true

tales from around Buzzards Bay during the American Revolution, and other pirate lore such as treasure maps and walking the plank. Tours can also be made for groups by appointment. There will be a Fairhaven Farmer’s Market each Sunday from June 19 through October 30, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Located at 151 Alden Road, the privately-operated market features locally-grown edibles such as vegetables, fruits, baked goods, meat, herbs, honey, jams, plants, homemade soups, fresh-squeezed lemonade, and other farm-related products. Parking is available on the premises. A popular summer event in Fairhaven is the Father’s Day Roadrace. The 5-kilometer run starts at 9 a.m. on Sunday, June 19, beginning at Hastings Middle School at 30 School Street. Making its way through the historical streets of Fairhaven, the race includes some of New England’s top runners. Online entry for the race is $20 for adults, $25 after June 1. Adults 70-andover and children 13-and-under can register for $10. T-shirts will be given to the first 1,000 entrants. There are no race-day entries. Fairhaven’s annual Homecoming Day Fair takes place on Saturday, June 25 on Center Street, from William Street to Green Street. The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring 175 booths of handmade crafts and delicious foods, as well as live entertainment, children’s activities, fire engine rides, and an art exhibit on the west lawn of the Unitarian Church. Sponsored by the Fairhaven Improvement Association, more information can be found at Fairhavenimprovement.org. Fairhaven will host a Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30 at 10 a.m. Coordinated by the Veteran’s Services office, the parade steps off at the intersection of Main Street and Center Street and will progress north to the Riverside Cemetery for a ceremony at the Civil War monument. The parade will include participation from military and veterans groups and others. For further information on any summer events in Fairhaven contact the Office of Tourism at (508) 979-4085. by Sebastian Clarkin

“Eight years ago you didn’t see or hear all this art, culture, and tourism talk,” says Sandy Dennis. That’s why, in 2014, Dennis and her husband Dave launched AHA! Fall River, in an effort to showcase the best of what the Spindle City has to offer.

I

t was a good year to hail from the Whaling City – thanks to organizations like AHA! (Arts, History, Architecture), New Bedford’s cultural renaissance was beginning to hit its stride. Fall River? Not so much. Sandy and Dave Dennis set out to change that. Originally a spin-off from AHA! New Bedford, the now-christened Creative Arts Network (CAN) has been an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit since 2017 – an acknowledgement that Fall River has required a bespoke touch for its arts community to flourish. CAN’s community calendar (found at creativerartnetwork.org) has, from the organization’s inception, proven to be an invaluable resource for artists and cultural icons, as well as for anyone looking to engage in the arts. “We have coordinated and run close to 400 events with well over 50,000 attendees,” says Dennis. “We’ve collaborated on major events and projects with leading organizations, and we’ve formed long-lasting relationships with major stakeholders such as MassDOT, Mass Coastal Railroad, and Bristol (BCC), to name a few.”

18

What started a small community project soon became a state-wide resource. In CAN’s words: "a local focus and a regional strategy." And then the pandemic hit.

CAN's Public Art Policy, proposed to the City Council, recognizes the value of public art and provides, "engaging, imaginative spaces that enliven the public experience, foster community, celebrate unique stories and collective history, and inspire us to experience the world with fresh perceptions."

Creative solutions

The disruption posed by the pandemic was significant, but far from fatal. Like others, CAN adapted, and discovered new ways to promote culture in a world of quarantines and social distancing.

June 2022 | The South Coast Insider

First, CAN set out to understand the full impact of the pandemic on the arts and culture of Fall River. According to Dennis, CAN would frequently survey the participants in their events for feedback. “You can never get enough data!” she says. “Data is what can drive the future of art, culture, and tourism.” So it only made sense for CAN to develop and distribute one of the first surveys to address Covid in the arts and culture sector (which you can still participate in on their website). The results from this survey served as a guiding light for how the organization could best serve the community. The past two years have been filled with Zoom meetings and trainings, as well as virtual events with artists through Facebook and YouTube. These not only allowed people to continue to enjoy art and music, but helped provide funding to artists who would otherwise be cut off from their audiences. Meanwhile, CAN has flexed its advocacy muscles to set the foundation for a stronger post-pandemic Fall River through public policy. With CAN’s guidance, Fall River is now home to the Waterfront Cultural District – the

BuyBlackNB by Steven Froias

JUNETEENTH

When the BuyBlackNB Juneteenth pop-up market returns to the Rotch Jones Duff House and Garden in New Bedford on Juneteenth (Sunday, June 19), it will represent something more than an opportunity to discover local Black-owned small businesses, individual entrepreneurs, and craftspeople.

I

t will also reflect the stunning achievement that is BuyBlackNB itself. BuyBlackNB began its journey as an online platform in 2020 highlighting the area’s many Black-owned small business and creative endeavors. It was launched as a website that featured over 75 Black-owned businesses: buyblacknb.com. Since then, BuyBlackNB has expanded into a physical presence by hosting a series of pop-up markets in New Bedford featuring the names on its website. The largest of these were the Juneteenth market last year in 2021, also

20

at the Rotch Jones Duff House. Clearly, something clicked away from the computer mousepad, as BuyBlackNB became a brand in and of itself and a huge success. It was so successful that the concept was even moved to Fall River this past spring for a Spindle City pop-up event. It, too, proved to be a hit.

Taking action

BuyBlackNB was founded by life-long New Bedford resident Justina Perry in 2020. She was, she says, galvanized into action after what she saw happening to Black bodies

around the nation – crystalized by the muder of George Floyd. Upon launching BuyBlackNB, Justina Perry stated, “In supporting local Black-owned businesses, we are working to close the racial wealth gap, strengthen our local economies, foster job creation, and celebrate Black culture.” BuyBlackNB.com offered shoppers an interactive map to help patrons discover the businesses it listed in its directory, and it has continued to add new ones since 2020. There was no fee for these listings, as Justina explained, “The work is a labor of love for people, places, and products that make up the New Bedford community.” With some funding from sources like Wicked Cool Places of New Bedford Creative for the New Bedford Economic Development Council, BuyBlackNB

developed the pop-up markets as well as other online special projects. Those include a Black-owned Holiday Gift Directory and a "Black in Business" virtual series to highlight and support Black entrepreneurs and aspiring business leaders. "HERstory: A Celebration of Black Women,” produced in association with the New Bedford Historical Society, began in February, 2021.

The Juneteenth pop-up market

Now, back by popular demand, BuyBlackNB will once again hold what’s becoming its signature event: the Juneteenth Pop-up Outdoor Market at the Rotch Jones Duff House and Garden Museum. On Sunday, June 19, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at 396 County

Brito combines an eye for fashion with outstanding customer service and has created a dedicated fan base of patrons who know where to go when they want to get fashionable. That’s usually 111 William Street, but on Juneteenth, Celia’s makes a road trip to pop-up market with a selection of styles to get you in the mood for summer.

In addition to the online and outdoor events, BuyBlackNB also boasts a terrific blog on its website, BuyBlackNB.org. Recent entries include a look at Abstrakt music, owned and operated by New Bedford native Michael “Mikey Life” Monterio III. Readers can learn that “Mikey, after having been around the world and being based in Los Angeles for around 20 years, has come back to New Bedford to fulfill his plan to headquarter his business in the city. “For Abstrakt Music, the building which houses the company is a focal piece of his business and embodies his relationship with New Bedford. The Zeitz building which has stood as a respected area icon for almost a century has housed many previous New Bedford businesses.” The writer, Busola Awobode, has many entries up on the site – all informative and a great community communications tool – not just for BuyBlackNB but fo.r everyone in the community Check it out before you check out the Juneteenth BuyBlackNB Pop-up Market on SJune 19; it will be your source for updated info on this event and all future events.

COVER STORY "It's a masterpiece in progress." That's how Lee Blake, President of the New Bedford Historical Society, describes the current status of Abolition Row Park on Seventh Street, across from the historic home of slavery abolitionists Nathan and Mary “Polly” Johnson.

he new park, being built to mark New Bedford's leading role in the pre-Civil-War movement to abolish slavery and the Underground Railroad that helped slaves escape to freedom, will have its soft opening in July or August, Blake said. Meanwhile, she explained, over the spring and summer the park infrastructure is being installed. A water wall will likely be one of the most impressive of those features. A waterfall will cascade over a wall embossed with a quote from Nathan Johnson that is also on his gravestone advocating "the freedom of all men." She noted that Johnson, whose home is across the street, harbored famed abolitionist and lecturer Frederick Douglass and others like him who came to New Bedford to escape slavery. Records show 140 of these freedom seekers, including Douglass, stayed in the city. A total of approximately 700 escaped slaves came to New Bedford at that time on their way to boarding ships to other free territory. To emphasize this and other ways the park's location is significant, educational kiosks on New Bedford's abolitionist

To encourage visitors to the park, a gazebolike bandstand is being developed by the local Carpenters Union to feature live music, speakers, and poetry readings. The park also plans to display works of public art. In September or October, the park's likely main attraction will be installed, the statue of Frederick Douglass that will portray him at the age when he first arrived at the Johnson house in 1838. According to Blake, a lot of extra help and a variety of funding mechanisms are moving the process along smoothly. Boston-based Cultural Outreach Group Design developed the park master

Fundraising has included grants from Preservation Act funds, Bristol County Savings, the Island Foundation, the MA Office of Tourism, and an Open Space grant from the South Coast Community Foundation. In addition to the above assistance, the Historical Society worked with the City of New Bedford's Planning, Housing, and Community Development and Parks and Recreation departments as a public/ private collaboration from the design stage to managing the construction work there, and the project has had the support from a variety of local organizations and state representatives. "It's a wonderful example of how good government can work," Blake said.

The park originated in flames, she said, and rose like a Phoenix. A fire destroyed two long-neglected historic homes at the corner of Spring and Seventh Streets in 2010. he cafe is the brainchild of Amanda Souza-Vieira, a Tiverton resident and Portsmouth High, CCRI, and Kaplan College alumna. “I have always loved cats,” she begins, adding that she grew up on a family farm in the picturesque coastal town where she enjoyed goats, cows, chickens, and “a lot of cats.” Souza-Vieira graciously shares that she suffers from anxiety, and cats – she and her husband Nicholas own six furry felines – have always been a soothing presence in her life. “Cats are so pure and genuine,” she says, noting that while her husband is “more of a dog person,” he does enjoy the family felines. The busy entrepreneur says that she’s enjoyed a busy career, serving in a variety of capacities ranging from working in a fast food restaurant, serving on a cruise ship, preparing taxes, and bookkeeping. “I’ve had some health issues and I’ve wanted to make a change,” she says, adding that she’s always wanted to help

animals, especially felines, so one idea that she had was to create a “cat cafe.” That dream has now become a reality. “It’s so rewarding,” Souza-Vieira emphasizes, noting that since the cafe opened its doors last August, the facility successfully saved more than 120 cats that now enjoy new homes. “The building was up for sale so we purchased it, and with the help of family and friends and a lot of hard work, we created Bajah’s Cat Cafe,” she says, adding that word Bajah means “beautiful.” The owner works with several animal shelters and rescue groups throughout the area. The felines are fostered for up to two months, fed, litter trained, and receive other necessities at no charge to ensure proper care. While visitors to the bakery part of the cafe are always welcome to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and a bakery treat, guests to Bajah's Villa Cat Lounge must make a reservation either with other cat lovers or privately.

ON MY MIND

The tell-tale heart by Paul Kandarian

I think I'm losing my edge. I’m a guy who loves, just loves the dark side of things. I’m not necessarily a dark person, just a bit moody from time to time (depending on whom you ask). But as a consumer, I love dark drama, films, TV shows, plays, books. And as an actor, I love nothing more than playing deeply conflicted, flawed characters and peeling back layer upon layer of darkness to let that darkness just shine bright.

I

adored The Sopranos during its run. That show just reached into my throat, pulled it inside out and left me wanting for more. I remember many Sunday nights after each new episode – and especially the lights-out ending of the last one – staying awake just jazzed by the power of what I’d seen, unable to sleep and then having dreams punctuated by visions of mafioso dancing in my head. Ditto for shows like Deadwood, and that dark vein of black emotional gold that threaded through both seasons about a gold-rush Western town and which was inexplicably canceled. They did cobble together a movie

26

years later that was good, but not nearly as good as the original series. Most recently, I’m caught in the gloomy and doomy webs of shows like Ozark and Yellowstone. The former, I mean wow, this seemingly ideal family, white, toothy, suburban, with everything going for them when WHAM! they’re plunged into the depths of depravity, chaos, and murder. Helen, the sleazy lawyer, at the end of season three… if you’ve seen it, you know. And if you haven’t, let’s just say Helen lost her head when all about her others were keeping theirs. Yellowstone, my God, that show. The sprawl of it all – the location is sensational,

beautiful, and bold. And the characters are, too. Kevin Costner in probably his best role ever and so many others steeped in misery and mystery, living lives tragic and agonizing amid the best and most twisted versions of the cowboy ethic you’ll ever see. But now… now I’ve lost my edge. Now I love, nay, I adore… Anne with an E on Netflix. There, I said it. I feel better already. If you don’t know it, Anne is a remarkable, nerdy, and superbly confident and lovable young girl who grows into the same and even stronger as a young woman in the late 19th century. She’s

had a dark past; she lost her parents as a child and lived most of her youth in a horrific orphanage in Nova Scotia, where the series is set. Anne is a gem of a character, so sweet and superb and curious and smart and supportive and loving. She’s adopted by an elderly brother-and-sister team who run a farm in their rural town of Avonlea, the series based on Anne of Green Gables, and it is just superb. Fantastically acted, scored, and filmed, this is up there with the best of the best series I’ve ever laid my heart on. And there is nary a murder or drug deal or dismemberment or really fatalities of any sort. It is the sort of kumbaya-feeling, puppy-dogs-and-lollipop pap that I would mock violently in the past. But not now. Now I embrace the pure golden feelings this show emits, even when realizing it’s geared toward a younger audience. As one reviewer put it, “It’s like hearing a story

your mother has told you since childhood being retold by your mom’s best friend in college – there’s more to it and it’s more exciting.” The goal of this murderous reign of terror was not to kill the Indian, but kill the Indian in the child. And it is presented in this series as an entry point for young people and anyone to learn more about it, because education is the surest way to understanding. But the show overall is just so beautiful and lovingly presented, that I don’t even mind when the message of each episode tends to smack you over the head and purposely pull at your heartstrings. Okay, granted,

it’s a little (or a lot) like an over-the-top ABC Afternoon Specials of the ‘90s, but sometimes I like my syrupy sweet lessons delivered drowned in sepia tones from the lips of idealistic children and grumpy grownups. But not for long – all that sweetness is contagious. Yup, I gotta say Anne with an E is just for me, and just the antidote for bloody, dark, depressing, and scary shows. I still watch them, mind you, but an escape to the simple and simplistic is just the recharge I love to indulge in. Don’t think that means I’m losing my edge, but softening it a bit may be good for the soul.
