the region’s coastal charms. Their new property was a former tomato farm, perfect for supporting the couple’s new hobby: raising chickens. Fortunately for them, they had a knack for it. Before too long, the Bishops had more eggs than they knew what to do with. They began selling the surplus, and learning about how to expand the farm in a healthy and sustainable way. To give a sense of how successful this expansion has been, the farm’s chicken population has ballooned from the original 20 to over 3000. While her husband has kept his IT job, Ester has been able to commit herself to the farm full-time. She prides herself on providing her animals with joyful, stressfree lives. “People should know where their food comes from – you can really taste the difference,” said Bishop.

Bishop’s commitment to “beyond organic” farming extends beyond cuddles and words of affirmation to her livestock. She ensures all the animals are provided with healthy, organic meals, and that their waste is repurposed as manure. “You can see how green the grass is where the turkeys have been,” Bishop says. “That’s because they fertilize the soil with their manure. Manure is the basis of organic fertilizers. There are no chemicals added, or needed, when the animals do their job.” Speaking of animals doing their jobs, Bishop has conscripted her goats and pigs into clearing away swaths of underbrush on the property – the “gnarly vines” that give the farm its name. Gnarly Vines coordinates with neighboring farms to provide its customers with a variety of sustainable and organic products. Angus beef, for instance, will sell out almost as soon as it comes into stock. But the farm is not bound by terrestrial limitations: the Bishops have partnered with Captain’s Finest and Sakonnet Lobster to bring fresh seafood to market. Bishop is particularly proud of a new initiative at the farm: food security community supported agriculture (CSA) plans. Hurting but hopeful, the South Coast music community has not been exempt from the COVID-19 roller coaster
S
triving to return to a world they once knew, local artists and venues are enduring the pandemic challenge economically as well as emotionally, beset but determined. “Musicians were the first to get locked out and the last to be allowed back in,” says Sean FitzGerald, lead vocalist for the local ska rock act NB Rude Boys. “People turn to musicians for escapism and now we’re the ones who are in need of it the most. “Going into this two years ago we were thinking that there would soon be some sense of relief but things are looking even more uncertain right now,” FitzGerald says. “There’s a malaise, a lot of people are dealing with depression, trying to make ends meet while being creative. It can be difficult just getting people together to practice. Some people went to college for performing and now there’s nothing for them. They’re in their 30s and 40s,
8
With more time on their hands, many musicians have been able to devote more time and effort to their creativity scratching their heads about how to make money.” But according to FitzGerald there has been an upside for some musicians in the COVID age. With more time on their hands, many musicians have been able to devote more time and effort to their creativity. At the beginning of the pandemic the NB Rude Boys were in the process of recording a four-song EP. But with the onset of COVID and the resulting down time, the nine-piece band made the decision to amp up the album to include nine original songs. They are targeting a spring release for “Welcome To Rude Bedford.” “I’m optimistic about the amount of new music being produced in this area,”

FitzGerald says. “Music has seen a significant explosion. With the advances of technology, the average person was able to pursue either a dream or a hobby and actually start recording with the convenience of apps and software right on their phone.” And COVID has been the mother of creative ingenuity. The New Bedfordbased band A Wilhelm Scream was working on their sixth full-length album as the pandemic ensued, but the project got delayed and numerous worldwide tour dates were scrapped. The band adapted to the circumstances by creating their

The Zeiterion Theatre in downtown New Bedford has made a successful comeback from a situation that was described as “wretched and devastating” by Executive Director Rosemary Gill. breed of melodic hardcore by sharing digital files of their songs, rather than meeting in person to rehearse the new material. The band’s chief songwriter, Trevor Reilly, was sending digital demos of his song ideas to his band members, who wrote their parts in turn. “For the first time I wrote most of my drum parts on my laptop,” says A Wilhelm Scream’s Nick Angelini. “I would listen to the songs while sitting at my drum kit, and after I played them on my drums I went to my computer and punched in the parts on my keyboard. The computer drums sound great.” A Wilhelm Scream will release “Lose Your Delusion” this month. The 11-song album was recorded at Reilly’s downtown New Bedford recording studio, Anchor End. The band has multiple tours scheduled that will take them throughout the globe. While being away from local stages, The J Kelley Band adapted to the COVID situation by releasing a string of singles to keep the interest of their fans. They can be listened to on all major streaming services. As the drummer for the bands All Sinners, Drained, and The Nightcrawlers, Roger Chouinard says that there has been a lot of online creativity by local musicians. “Bands are still putting out songs, but a lot of them have started streaming live performances from their rehearsal spaces,” he says. “If you play a local show you could get 30 people to attend, but by going online you can reach people around the world.” For singer/guitarist Chris Guaraldi, booking and playing acoustic shows at the Pour Farm Tavern in downtown New

Bedford has been precarious. Taking place on the second Saturday of each month, the shows have included only vaccinated performers using separate microphones so as not to spread any germs between each other. “You want to be safe but at some point you’ve got to live your life,” Guaraldi says. “I’ll get as many shots as I have to if it allows me to play music.”
The shows must go on
Area music venues have also experienced the pandemic pendulum. In May of 2020, after a two-month hiatus, the Narrows Center for the Arts began doing live streaming performances from their stage, beginning with the Neal McCarthy Trio. They would not welcome live audiences for another year, returning with a performance by pianist George Winston. It made sense to book an instrumentalist because at that time the state had banned singing in live music venues. When that mandate was lifted the Narrows brought in folk star Tom Rush. But the road would wind again. “In August, September, and October of last year we were at full capacity, crowds were really coming back,” says Narrows Executive Director Patrick Norton. “But things dipped in November and December when the media started delivering a lot of bad news, it was horrendous. They were having football games with 80,000 people in indoor stadiums, but to have 200 people at a folk concert they wanted to shut us down.” The Zeiterion Theatre in downtown New Bedford has made a successful comeback from a situation that was described as “wretched and devastating” by Executive Director Rosemary Gill. After canceling performances on March 12 of 2020, the Zeiterion would furlough or layoff a majority of its staff, losing almost 95 percent of their earned income for that period of time. They were able to reopen their doors on October 1st of 2021, and this January a concert by the Portuguese fado singer Mariza attracted more than 1,000 people. By spring of last year, the Zeiterion had returned all of its employees to their previous positions. Last spring, the Zeiterion launched a
March 2022 | The South Coast Insider
series of outdoor drive-in shows as well as some virtual programming. “Audiences were happy to experience the joy and fun of live performances again,” Gill says. “So many people came up to me, both audiences and artists, thanking us for bringing back our performances.” The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra has also seen fluctuations. They started their season successfully in September and November of last year, followed by their Holiday Pops Concert in December. But eventually they had to postpone their January 8 concert at the Zeiterion, in addition to postponing January performances in their Chamber Music Concert Series. The NBSO is hopeful about their April and May concerts at the Zeiterion. When Hewn opened its doors in downtown New Bedford in August of 2020, owner Myles Goulart had the intention of putting on performances by local artists in his boutique, but with the tumultuous COVID circumstances he wouldn’t put on his first show until a year later. He would have to cancel numerous Open Mics throughout the year, but he would eventually host shows by singer/songwriters Molly O’Leary and Hooly J Chan in December 2021 and January 2022. Goulart also performed at the shows on piano and electric guitar. The Pour Farm Tavern has bounced back fairly well. In addition to Guaraldi’s acoustic shows, they are hosting Open Mics on Tuesday nights, as well as Thursday night shows with Neal McCarthy and Matt Antunes. DJ Anj is playing Hip-Hop on Friday nights, there are occasional Sunday performances by the Pearly Baker Band, and an assortment of local bands playing covers and original songs. But ultimately, there is some optimism amidst the challenges. “In 2019 and early 2020 live music was doing great everywhere, now we’re at less than half of our pre-COVID audiences,” Norton says. “Live music is something that Amazon can’t deliver, and there are people who live for live music. I’ve seen it come back once and I’m sure that it’ll come back again. It might take a couple of years to fully return to our 2019 levels but we’ll get there.”

palettes are more adventurous and wide-ranging. A viewing of the Cove Surf & Turf online menu will prove enticing for those interested in a rich and diverse dining experience – something that can only come from a team of knowledgeable and devoted employees, and a chef and owner who takes pride in his contributions to the community. “I’m not surprised by Jesse’s success,”
says Jessica Rebello of Fairhaven, who formerly worked with DeSouza in a Dartmouth restaurant while he was a line cook and she was a manager. “He’s like an athlete who can play any position – he knows everything about how to run a restaurant and make it a success. His versatility is a strength.” This is the first restaurant that DeSouza has owned. Beginning as a dishwasher at a chain restaurant while attending New Bedford High School, DeSouza has worked at multiple local food establishments in a variety of roles. In addition to being the owner and chef of Cove Surf & Turf, he is also the general manager, marketer, and e-commerce manager. He may be found in any role the restaurant
offers. In March 2020, during a weeklong COVID-19 shutdown, he built the restaurant’s website, and updates it regularly. He created all of the photography and food descriptions. “I like the different responsibilities,” DeSouza says. “I’ve been able to use a lot of what I’ve learned at places where I’ve worked. I have a good idea of what people enjoy.” Located at 1500 Cove Road in New Bedford’s South End, Cove Surf & Turf is situated just off of Route 18, in close proximity to the beaches of the Rodney French peninsula, across from Clark’s Cove, and just outside of the hurricane barrier and the city’s brand new, scenic Cove Walk. According to DeSouza, half of Cove Surf & Turf’s business is delivery and pickup orders, mostly made online. The restaurant delivers food to any location within 20 minutes of their door. The restaurant’s menu can be accessed at CoveNB.com. “I eat food from Cove at least once a week and I’ve never had an issue,” Rebello says. “I’ve had a lot of takeout there and it’s always delicious, cooked to the right temperature with the right seasoning and good texture. It’s also affordable.” This time of year is the start of a prosperous season for Cove Surf & Turf. With Lent beginning on March 2, the Catholic community is consuming fish more regularly, and with St. Patrick’s Day on March 17, the restaurant will meet the surge in demand for corned beef and cabbage. The restaurant also sees an increase in employees during the summer season – interested applicants can contact DeSouza via the website.
I’m not surprised by Jesse’s success. He’s like an athlete who can play any position – he knows everything about how to run a restaurant and make it a success. His versatility is a strength. And if you come for the food, you may come back for the atmosphere. DeSouza has continually reinvested his profits into the restaurant with upgrades and expansions, including an outdoor dining area, a full liquor license, and a larger kitchen. He is currently in the planning stages for a massive additional expansion. “Jesse is concerned about the customer’s experience,” says Molly Bobola, a Cove Surf & Turf employee and DeSouza’s fiancée. “He wants people to have a comfortable and positive experience.” “There’s a reason why we have so many long-time regular customers,” says Jen Goodwin, who has been a Cove Surf & Turf employee since it opened. “Once you find a good restaurant you’ll stick with it.” Learn more by visiting covesurfandturf. com. THINGS TO DO
Step Afrika! is coming to the Zeiterion
STEPS in MARCH by Steven Froias
As Rosemary Gill, Executive Director of the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in New Bedford notes, among cultural organizations in the city, “We were the first to close and the last to reopen.”
P
erhaps that’s why now that we’re emerging from the pandemic, the Z is embracing performances that demand your attention in the present moment. Maybe it’s why, during the month of March, it is embracing the often neglected discipline of dance. There’s arguably no performance that requires your devotion in the moment like dance on stage. It’s an art form that’s meant to be experienced as a viewer and even as a participant. And the Z’s March lineup offers both to audiences. The Z is branding March as “Dance Discovery Month” at the venue. They write that, “whether an expert or simply

a spectator, engage with fellow dance fans as you experience the art form through a variety of fun and inspiring events.” In fact, each of two highlighted special live dance events offer secondary opportunities to learn more, and even get into your own groove. On Sunday, March 20, the acclaimed dance company Pilobolus brings their tour of “The Big Five-Oh!” to New Bedford. It distills 50 years of the dance company into this one special performance featuring five “fantasy-like” sequences. Each illustrates the values of the company, or as they put it, “a half century of radical creativity and

boundary-pushing… as we question our own givens and turn traditions sideways.” Pilobolus began at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire in 1971. Moses Pendleton, an English literature major and cross-country skier; Jonathan Wolken, a philosophy science major and fencer; and Steve Johnson, a pre-med student and pole vaulter were enrolled in a dance composition class taught by Alison Becker Chase. In that class, they created their first dance, which they titled “Pilobolus” – and a legacy of movement and magic was born. Current Artistic Co-directors Renee Jaworski and Matt Kent say to this day, Pilobolus retains the revolutionary spirit of the Vietnam War-era social protest movement. Since 1971, Pilobolus has tested the limits of human physicality to explore the beauty and the power of connected bodies. Patrons can ask them their own questions when they and the dancers participate in a pre-show talk. Also, as part of Dance Discovery, and marking the special appearance of Pilobolus at the Z to celebrate their 50th anniversary, South Coast photographer Denn Santoro

BUSINESS BUZZ
Sweet history by Michael J. DeCicco
For Dorothy Cox Candies, the premier candy maker in the South Coast, holiday seasons never end.
V
alentine production season starts the day after New Year’s. Easter season opens on February 15, right after Valentine's Day. Owner Francis Cox, Jr., 59, says that around Valentine’s Day the factory produces approximately 2500 chocolate-covered strawberries and 150-300 pounds of butter crunch candies and 400-500 pounds of chocolate per day. When Easter season starts up, the factory produces 65,000 pounds worth of chocolate Easter eggs and chocolate bunnies, weighing from one ounce to 35 pounds. At Easter time, the bunnies, Cox said, are his biggest seller. Cox says he uses up to approximately 250,000 pounds of chocolate a year. The chocolate comes to him in the form of 50-pound cases loaded with 10 large rectangular chocolate bars each. The bars are melted in large mixing bowls

DIY Gallery by Ron Fortier
As an artist, I’ve tried to seek out potential buyers and collectors, as I’m sure my fellow artists have. But the thing I soon realized was that you don't find them.
N
o, the collectors find you. An art collector is, as you may have thought, a person who collects works of art. But there’s so much more to it! According to a January 2018 article by Evan Beard (artsy.net/article/evanbeard-four-tribes-art-collectors), there are four kinds of art collectors. There’s the Connoisseur, the Enterprising Collector, the Aesthete, and the Trophy Hunter. The Connoisseur is motivated by the possibility of an intellectual discovery. Imagine finding a painting or a drawing that may be a missing link to a treasure trove of knowledge or a piece that wasn’t even known to exist? It’s the thrill of a lifetime! The Enterprising Collector is mostly interested in art as an asset. Their goal is to buy low when the artist is just emerging onto the scene and grab a lot of early work at bargain prices.

There are four kinds of art collectors. There’s the Connoisseur, the Enterprising Collector, the Aesthete, and the Trophy Hunter. The Aesthete is motivated by the visual experience and how the art “speaks to them” or, as Beard describes as, “an emotional extension of their being, separate from status or financial gain.” The Trophy Hunter, on the other hand, is all about possession. Specifically, possessing something no one else has, or the one thing everyone else wants. Evan Beard wrote, “I recently toured one of the great private art collections

with its owner and was struck by how he described each painting. Forget composition or color. Each picture was an anthropology lesson in the hunt.”
Starting your own collection
Have you ever had an interest in collecting or just buying art? Was it the furthest thing from your mind until you were presented with an opportunity? Most individuals who buy art casually, do so when they can’t walk away from a piece because it reminds them of someone, a time, or a place. There’s an obvious emotional component to their attraction and purchase. Some buy art occasionally. Their purchases are a random or impulsive diversion. Many are just naturally curious about art, artists, and process, and regularly visit galleries. Buyers also frequent open studios and festivals because it’s readily available and free entertainment. Of course,
there are those who buy art specifically to make a statement or to match their drapes or the couch. It’s much easier to buy art without ever leaving the house. It’s an armchair expedition that includes scrolling through social media pages and then visiting the artist’s website. Interacting with the artist is far more pleasurable. Yes, buyers of art can evolve into collectors. It starts with a fascination or fixation of one or several artists’ works. These buyers in transition sometimes assume the status of a patron. In short, the reason for collecting or just buying art is endless. But if you’ve ever wondered about buying art as an investment, it’s far too risky! There is an old, often-told joke in the wine business. It goes, how do you make a small fortune in the wine business? Simple: you start off with a large one! So how do you start buying art? First, please remember, it is an investment driven by practicality, emotion, investment, or intellectual satisfaction. How do you start? What kind of art should you buy? To borrow once again from the world of wine: drink what you like. How do you know what you like? Taste a lot of different wines! So get out there and attend art openings, visit art fairs, open studios, and art festivals.

because they invest in the artist’s career because it is mutually beneficial. A good gallery is in a partnership with the artists they represent. They invest time and money to show and market their artists and allow the artist the luxury of having to only focus on creating new art. Galleries offer a solid selection of curated works that are reflective of their clientele’s needs and wants. An online acquaintance, Michelle Gaugy, art consultant, former gallerist, says that collectors “do not travel in packs. They do not buy randomly.” For artists, Beard says, “Placement with the right collector can bestow legitimacy on a young artist quicker than the blessing of any curator or critic.” Thinking of starting to buy art or collect art? Spring is in the air, and it’s time to start planning your garden and thinking about what flowers or vegetables you’ll want to enjoy this year!

tart perusing seed and bulb catalogs and exploring recipes that will utilize the bounty of fruits and veggies from the summer harvest. Swansea resident Norma McNally, who taught chemistry at Apponequet High School in Lakeville for many years before retiring, shares her passion for gardening and love of the great outdoors at Redwood Nursery in North Swansea (redwoodnursery.com). “It gets me out in the fresh air and I get plenty of exercise,” she begins, adding that she’s been working at the garden center since 2011. “It’s good for the psyche and gardening puts you in a good mood.” According to McNally, Redwood Nursery is a

The facility was named after the redwood tree planted in the front of the property whose origin was a sapling from Blythewood Mansion and Gardens in Bristol. McNally says that because the center is a full service garden nursery and landscape company, it “offers a multitude of trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals that will fit in any landscape.” For folks who aren’t knowledgeable about plants and horticulture, McNally

notes that there are several staff members at the nursery who are eager to share their expertise in planning a beautiful and colorful garden. Clients can also use the design service that sends a designer, supervised by head designer Jarred Lynch, to their property for consultation. “Redwood employs four designers,” McNally continues. “Once the client is satisfied with their choices, Redwood also offers a planting service and a landscape division that offers lawn maintenance,

fertilizer application, and lawn renovation.” She adds for the gardener who enjoys putting on a pair of work gloves and digging into the soil, the staff is always available to offer advice and make suggestions.
Tilling soil
While Redwood officially opens on March 15, McNally uses March 1 as the unofficial start of spring cleanup. She tells gardeners to remove all sticks, leaves, and other debris. “Do some pruning,” she says. “You’ll need a good pair of clean garden shears that are in good condition. “Scratch the bark on a branch with your fingernail,” she continues. “If it’s green,
don’t prune it unless you want to prune it for shape.” When pruning, McNally tells customers to use March 1 as a target date so it is easy for people to remember. “Roses should be cut back to one third of their previous growth,” she says. “This feels heartbreaking, but the shrub will be better for it! This should be done on that target day or soon thereafter.” McNally emphasizes that hydrangeas always confuse people as to when the flowers should be pruned. “Basically, there are two time frames depending on the type of hydrangea,” she shares. “Those that bloom early in the spring and only bloom once should have been pruned by August 1 of the previous year so that new buds can set during late summer and fall. Examples are oakleaf hydrangeas, climbing hydrangeas, and lace caps. “Those that bloom later in the summer, or everblooming types, can be pruned in the spring (March 1) as they set bud in late spring,” McNally adds. “In either case, all dead wood should be cut out to the crown every spring.” The gardening expert says that fertilizing can also be done with a slow release fertilizer such as organic Espoma products, or a chemical one with an NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) 5-10-5. “Fertilizer should be
placed around the shrub or perennial at the drip line and then lightly scratched into the soil,” McNally continues. “Our nursery and other garden centers provide a number of organic fertilizer choices, as well as chemical options. Compost is also a good choice and garden centers have both bulk and bagged compost. Mulching can be done later in the season.” McNally emphasizes that as the season progresses, gardeners should watch for insect infestation and fungus, particularly if the region has a wet season. “Neem oil is a great organic insect and fungus control,” she shares. “Fruit trees require a special regimen of spraying, so I advise customers to visit an experienced nurseryman to obtain specific directions and knowledge about products.” According to McNally, one of the most enjoyable aspects of her job and the end of winter is helping customers to plan what to incorporate into the garden for the coming season. “Perennials? Evergreen shrubs? A tree? What should I plant in my vegetable garden?,” she asks. “Redwood has it all – and the experts to help you make informed decisions as well as the products to help you succeed.” To learn more visit redwoodnursery.com.

ON MY MIND
Red-blooded man by Paul Kandarian
I’m such a bloody rare type. No, really.
L
ast year, I was on my way home from a film shoot in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and at the airport, there was a Red Cross setup there where you could donate blood. For the life of me, I can’t ever recall having given blood before. Maybe I have, but it would’ve been a long time ago. Actually, I do remember in 1971 stopping someplace in Bristol where they took blood (not sure if it was the Red Cross or not), but I did so looking for money. I’d heard that alcoholics and other down-on-their-luck types could sell blood for money, and as a college freshman I figured that was me. They turned me down. I told my dad what I’d tried and he raised holy hell about it. He was a liquor salesman, so maybe he knew what that scene was about, I don’t know, but he was some kind of mad. But this time, at the airport, I did it out of largesse; just a need to help others. I signed up, went into the bloodmobile outside the terminal (it really should be run by TSA given their vampiric personalities that drain souls) and rather quickly, that was that. I also signed up at the Red Cross to get reminders to give blood. And on one such notice, I found out my blood type, which really meant nothing to me until I looked into it. And this is where it gets interesting, and puts pressure on me to keep doing it: my blood type is B-negative, the second rarest there is, representing less than 2% of the population. By contrast, the most common, 0-positive, is running through the veins of 38% of the population. That kinda makes me feel special, and I guess I should.

B-negative red blood cells can be given to both B and AB patients, while we can only get blood from other B-negative donors or from 0-negative donors (universal donors). And since my type is rare, the Red Cross is really in need of it. Which explains why when I walked into my most recent donation station in Marion, the nurse doing the draining was positively excited to see me, saying she sees B-negative types maybe once a month if that. Also cool while giving blood this time: they check your vitals, and apparently the thought of being stabbed by a needle and bleeding into a plastic sack didn’t faze me. My resting pulse rate was 56. Which is much, much lower than Hannibal Lecter’s 85 when he was eating a nurse’s tongue. Sorry, I just think of life’s moments in great movie lines, and if you love “Silence of the Lambs” like I do, you’ll get the reference. This whole spirit of giving is not my normal MO, to be honest. I mean, I’ll hold doors open for people, I always say “please” and “thank you,” I’m deferential when needed, I just go by the golden rule, basically, or my version of it: I’m not a jerk to you if you’re not a jerk to me. But if you are a jerk to me, or more importantly, to someone I love, buddy, you ain’t never seen a bigger jerk than me. Small point of personal pride, that. But the volunteer thing? Not so much. The closest I came was doing shows for a nonprofit I used to be with, Creating Outreach About Addiction Support Together in Rhode Island, where we’d do original productions about the disease of addiction and the impact it has on families. Those shows were jarringly truthful, raw, and necessary, and I loved doing them, playing the father of an addict, which mirrored my real life: my son is in long-term recovery for addiction, doing well now. So doing that work – getting people to think, to act, to heal – was essential and so, so rewarding to
me. We’d have talkbacks after each show, and people opened up their hearts to us and each other, sharing tales of grief and anger but also the occasional triumph, and it was by far the most satisfying part of the show and my life as an actor. It feels good being helpful to people. Granted, we’re all helpful in some way, as a parent, a child, a wife, a husband, a doctor, a store clerk… you get the idea, we are all helpful either out of innate responsibility or part of the job. But when that help involves something as elemental and crucial as blood? Being helpful takes on a whole new, really urgent, and essential meaning. I have something inside me that very few people have and that many people need. And giving it to help is a no-brainer. I mean, it grows back! Can’t do that with a kidney or a liver, or that tongue that Lecter snacked on. Helping others helps you feel good. And if I may, in this case, pretty bloody good at that.
