Along with ghoulies and ghosties, long-legged beasties, and things that go bump in the night, trick-or-treaters and their parents need to avoid exposure to Covid-19 this Halloween, too.
With a few changes, some creative planning, and sensible precautions, everyone can enjoy a safe and exciting holiday – and some of your new Halloween “traditions” could become annual favorites!
Safety in (Small) Numbers
Avoiding crowds – especially indoors – is a top priority this Halloween. Plan on a series of small Halloween activities stretched out over several days instead of one big event on October 31. Limit invitations to indoor activities to your immediate family, school-age friends/ carpool pods who share your health practices regarding Covid-19 – maskwearing, vaccinations, hand hygiene, and social distancing. If possible, include “virtual Halloween” activities and contests to include children not in your immediate group. In case the weather doesn’t cooperate with your planned outdoor activities, have backup plans for either invitationonly indoor or virtual events. Work with neighbors, adult friends, teachers, and relatives to plan out several days’ worth of age-appropriate Halloween activities – cookie-making, scavenger hunts, costume parades, spooky movies, or backyard fire-pit scary stories with cider and donuts.
6
If possible, include “virtual Halloween” activities and contests to include children not in your immediate group. Who’s behind that mask
If you’re going to take your children door-to-door for trick-or-treating, they’ll still need to wear an appropriate mask to protect them from the virus, even though they’ll be outdoors. Avoid children’s costumes that come with a full-face mask or a mask which covers the child’s entire head. Do not let children wear a cloth or surgical mask beneath a costume mask – it will not only interfere with their vision, but it will also make it more difficult for them to breathe. Better to decorate a cloth or paper surgical mask and incorporate it into the costume’s design – a mustache, a scary monster mouth, a clown’s smile, or an animal’s snout.
Get Crafty!
Build up the excitement by getting kids of all ages involved in making holiday decorations! Pumpkin-carving (or

painting) can be a great activity both indoors or outdoors. Keep knives away from the little ones, and give each child a separate carving set or box of non-toxic colored markers, rather than let them share utensils. Give everyone their own beverage and bag of chips (sharing food and drinks could pass on the virus). Lay down plenty of newspapers on the table and floors, and have several grown-ups on hand to help and supervise. Decorate Halloween cookies! You can minimize the mess by buying packages of round sugar and gingersnap cookies and giving each child several tubes of colored frosting/gel. Refrigerate to let the frosting/gel harden. Spend an afternoon making Halloween decorations with colored construction paper, crepe paper streamers, styrofoam balls, paper plates and colored markers to display on windows, walls or in the children’s bedrooms. Draw scary monster hand-puppets on brown paper lunch bags with colored markers.
Virtual Halloween
If the weather’s bad or if your little ones aren’t feeling well, plan some stayat-home holiday activities. Go virtual trick-or-treating using Zoom, FaceTime,

Activities around town
Even if you don’t want your children to mingle with others beyond your neighborhood this Halloween, there may be some fun, no-contact activities and events you can find – check out local pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and hayrides. If you’re the grown-up designated to hand out candy from your front porch or driveway, protect yourself as well as others. In addition to wearing a face mask, wear a face shield and gloves if you’re going to come into direct contact with trick-or-treaters. Consider putting out a table on your well-lit front porch or driveway with pre-packed goodie bags and a pumpbottle of hand-sanitizer, and gently remind the kids to keep their six-foot distance.

Organize a “Trunk or Treat Parade.” Coordinate with relatives and neighbors to drive by your house at a pre-arranged time, and toss Halloween treats out the car windows while your costumed kids sit on the front steps or lawn. Or coordinate with people in your neighborhood to put a basket filled with individually bagged treats on top of their car’s trunk so that parents can walk by with their children and put one in their swag-bag. (Don’t let kids rummage through the baskets!)

THINGS TO DO

Anyone taking a self-guided tour of the Whaling City's largest murals and colorful examples of public art should start with the oldest "Dignity," which has graced a wall near the corner of Spring and South Sixth streets since 2001, is centered by a portrait of famed abolitionist (and one-time New Bedford resident) Frederick Douglass. The images around him depict the history of the labor movement and activism in New Bedford from the whaling and textile spinning mills days to the 20th century.
Each face on the mural depicts an actual laborer or a person involved in the labor movement. That's Arnold Dubin himself and the late Massachusetts Teachers Association activist and BCC teacher Margaret Rykebusch pictured in the top left corner. Gloria Clark of New Bedford is proud to note she was one of the volunteers who helped paint in some of the colors

by Michael J. DeCicco in the mural, assisting the main artist, Dan Deveney, a noted Northern Irish mural painter, Conor McGrady, and other volunteers. She noted the mural has been restored professionally twice under the auspices of the UMass Dartmouth Labor Education Center directed by Kim Wilson. "The mural was conceived by a group of union and community activists and leaders to give a beautiful piece of art to the community," Wilson elaborated. "We wanted to stress the many other movements Douglass was connected to. Part of the commitment to our major funder, Mass Humanities, was to ensure that it is preserved. Twice in the past 20 years we have brought a mural restoration specialist here to replace cracking paint, etc. "Murals like this one don't last forever unless you do restoration work," Clark added. "Paint peels on a solid wall like this. Weather cracks it."

But since the debut of “Dignity” in 2001, public art has only proliferated. The mural honoring the Civil War's famed 54th Regiment, the AfricanAmerican regiment that recruited its soldiers in New Bedford, has covered a wall off of Williams Street on the Freestone's Restaurant building since 2017. The National Park Service commissioned Philadelphia artist Jared Badeer to create an illustration of the regiment's recruiting days in the Whaling City, which took place in a small

office across the street from the mural's location. Those pictured prominently within it include a young Frederick Douglass, whose son Lewis H. Douglass enlisted and fought in the regiment, and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. William H. Carney who received the honor for his valor at the Battle of Fort Wagner. The mural across from it on the side of Carter's Clothing store on William Street is a postmodernist nod to New Bedford's nationally known 19th century painters, including Albert Bierstadt, Albert Pinkham Ryder, and William Bradford. It was created by the Artworks Teen Mural Project, whose sponsors included the National Endowment for the Arts. Down the street, "The Jazz Wall," a three-story collage of the city's late local Jazz music greats, covers the east wall of the Fiber Optics Center, at 23 Centre Street. Completed in 2020, it was designed by local artist Kat Knusten and was funded by a New Bedford's Wicked Cool Places grant with additional support from the Fiber Optics Center, Whaling City Sound, and the New Bedford Historical Society. It is managed/maintained by the local arts organization Superflat New Bedford. Just up the street from here you’ll find the bright murals on the walls surrounding Wing's Court off of Purchase Street that Superflat also maintains. Facing Purchase Street on a wall near the corner of Elm and Pleasant streets sits the equally large "Postcards from New Bedford:” seven distinct portraits and scenes that portray New Bedford culture and history. Greg Pennisten, a noted sign and mural painter, directed the artistic work of Kailey Barrows, Alex Jardin, Lena McCarthy, and Eden Soares. There is also the street-level mural "Black Lives Matter" on a wall stretching along Union Street from near the corner of Pleasant Street to Purchase Street. Each letter of the words contains a colorful collage of images and quotes related to those sentiments. Local artist and community activist Tanisha Ferrer organized this project and designed

some of the letters. A large group of artists and volunteers organized the rest of it, including Hayden-McFadden Elementary School students. The materials were funded with donations from New Bedford Creative and Superflat. Then there's the "Whaling Walls" mural on Maritime Terminal 393 facing Route 18 heading into downtown, commissioned by Mayor Frederick Kalisz Jr. in 2005. Moving south from downtown, "Create os Futuro", a large mural on the wall of the New Bedford Public Housing Authority development Ben Rose Gardens on South First Street, flashes to motorists along Route 18 images of successful residents and

It was commissioned by the New Bedford Housing Authority and created by Dorchester-based artist Cedric “Visel” Douglas. Not far from there, a wall of the Cape Verdean "Bisca Tournament Club" (a Cape Verdean card game) on Acushnet Avenue in the south end features a mural by David Guadalupe. The young girl pictured in the center is meant to represent the potential and the promise of a young Cape Verdean's future. The lot it faces is where New Bedford's traditional Cape Verdean parade ends its route.
Spontaneous art
None of these pieces of public art, nor others too numerous to mention around New Bedford, have the same origin story, Gloria Clark said. Some are closer to colorful, artistic graffiti. Many are "Pop-Up Murals.”

RIDES INTO THE FUTURE
It’s no secret that public transportation across the region, nation, and world took it on the chin during the pandemic.
by Steven Froias First came the lockdown, then the slow reopening, and then continuing restrictions over the course of a year and more. Even the vaunted 24-hour New York City subway sharply curtailed its service for months before gradually resuming a semblance of normalcy during the Covid-19 crisis. So you would think that the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SRTA), operating fixed-route and on-demand service throughout the South Coast area, spent the pandemic stuck in neutral. But you’d be wrong. In fact, SRTA spent the year adapting to the moment at hand and planning for the road ahead. SRTA implemented or announced new initiatives for a post-pandemic future during 2020 and into 2021, all while offering ridership free fares at first and then reduced fares, which remain in effect. In fact, despite the economic
14
challenges of navigating the pandemic, when full fares resume in October, they will do so at pre-pandemic rates. No fare increases are on the horizon at SRTA despite over a year of lost revenue. Partially, that’s due to federal Covid relief funds. However, some of SRTA’s other recent achievements are due to a dedicated team determined to move forward – despite any roadblocks.
SRTA in Real Time
The first sign that SRTA was still in gear was, literally, a sign. Back in April, SRTA unveiled electronic signs at both its New Bedford and Fall River SRTA bus terminals that display real-time schedule information for all routes
operating in its system. It was a project planned before the pandemic, and one that reached its destination despite it. “This technology will help our riders better move through their day as well as our network,” explains SRTA Administrator Erik B. Rousseau. “It takes the guesswork out of waiting for the bus. Especially when our drivers have to deal with inclement weather or a detour due to road work.” The outside sign displays consist of three lines which display time and date, and cycle through the arrivals at each terminal. The inside boards are much larger and have several lines of display – much like departure boards in

a train station or airport. They count down the minutes until each bus arrives at the station. In addition to being of benefit to riders, the real-time data will help SRTA better direct its resources and improve its quality of service. Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan commented after the signs were installed, “These upgrades will make it easier for our residents to take advantage of SRTA’s services, which are fundamental to the wellbeing of the Fall River community. This step represents SRTA’s commitment to connecting the Southeastern Massachusetts community through efficiency, accessibility and innovation.”
Intercity life
After that, SRTA made another announcement which reflected Mayor Coogan’s sentiment. In May, SRTA shared the news
"We want to make sure SRTA fares remain affordable in order to enable more riders to take advantage of our service." that the Intercity Express, traveling between New Bedford and Fall River, will continue through June 2022. The Intercity Express began in 2020 as a pilot program and proved not only useful but popular with SRTA patrons. The Intercity Express was funded through a MassDOT Service Pilot Grant initially intended for another project. However, responding to Covid19 necessitated a change in priority regarding service needs. This included shifting the focus towards reducing the number of passengers on-board vehicles in the interest of social distancing. SRTA successfully negotiated new terms for the funding with MassDOT – which allowed the authority to pilot the Intercity Express. The Route 9 bus between New Bedford and Fall River had historically enjoyed SRTA’s highest single route level of ridership. It is heavily used by the area’s workforce, as well as Bristol Community College and UMass Dartmouth students. During the height of the pandemic, this very need became a challenge. In order to responsibly practice social distancing on the popular line, SRTA administrators realized that enhanced service between the two cities would be necessary. They successfully appealed to MassDOT to redirect funds toward the Intercity Express. Not only did that decision
increase capacity, but it also allowed for more frequent buses to travel between the SRTA terminals in both cities. That created a new space for an express service – one that would slash travel time between the Whaling City and the Spindle City by a significant 30 minutes. As the pandemic eased, SRTA administrators sought to continue the Intercity Express for a full further year. The case was made that as the region’s workforce returned to their job sites, this would provide a faster travel time between New Bedford and Fall River and expand job opportunities accessible via public transit. MassDOT agreed, and the Intercity Express will now roll on into June 2022.
Faring well
Finally, as noted above, despite the challenges of operating during a pandemic, SRTA announced in July that when regular fare collection would resume in October, there would be no fare increases behind the wheel. “We’re committed to serving our riders in the best way possible with intelligent and nimble use of our resources,” comments Erik Rousseau, SRTA. “If anything, the pandemic proved how essential our service is to riders throughout the Southeastern Massachusetts region to get to work, do their errands, and remain connected with family and friends. “We want to make sure SRTA fares remain affordable in order to enable more riders to take advantage of our service. That means returning our fares to a pre-pandemic, rather than post-pandemic, level.” You could say that, despite traveling a rough road for a time, SRTA has its wheels on fire into the future.

Cranberries have been enjoyed for centuries as a holiday tradition, emblematic of New England and its history. But thanks to the vigorous efforts of Cape Cod Select, this tasty product is now consumed year-round for its flavor and health benefits, building the company a growing global clientele. “As more people have become aware of the availability of our frozen product we’ve experienced much greater distribution and double-digit growth every year,” says Cindy Rhodes, Owner and CEO of Cape Cod Select. “As people have become aware of the health benefits they have started using our frozen cranberries for smoothies and juices, as well as cooking, baking, sauces, and jarring.” Thanks to Rhodes’ determination, Cape Cod Select’s cranberry products are more popular than ever and show no signs of slowing. Based in Carver, in the heart of “Cranberry country,” Cape Cod Select earned a respected reputation in the 1940s when the Rhodes family began farming at the Edgewood Bogs. But in 2009 Cindy Rhodes saw a marketing niche – she wanted people to recognize that cranberries weren’t only a “holiday fruit” enjoyed during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Within two years, Cape Cod Select began seeing its products on the shelves of Whole Foods Markets and Shaw’s markets.

Boasting the slogan, “Cranberries for All Seasons,” this brand of fresh frozen fruit has made Cape Cod Select one of the top producers of cranberries in Massachusetts. But Rhodes’ success story had only begun – today Cape Cod Select has a nationwide base, and is also being exported to the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia. Cindy Rhodes says that people appreciate the “versatility” of the cranberry, in addition to its health benefits. Boasting the slogan, “Cranberries for All Seasons,” this brand of fresh frozen fruit has made Cape Cod Select one of the top producers of cranberries in Massachusetts. The company has expanded its market reach with its seasonal gift boxes and other items, including a line of five specialty packages that make for unique seasonal gifts. Available from late October through December, the line of gift boxes and items sells out each year. Included on the company’s website, they feature a

The gifts are ideal for the person on your holiday list who “has everything.” “These gifts are probably something they’ve never received before,” Rhodes says. “They’re carefully curated and will be valued for years to come.” Although Cape Cod Select has strong year-round sales numbers, their peak season for market sales is January, February, and March. “It took some convincing to get the ball rolling with our first couple of retail markets. They thought cranberries are only sold from October to December,” says Patrick Rhodes, Brand Manager for Cape Cod Select. “We were able to make them realize that people are

THINGS TO DO
Sweetest THE
SEASON by Brian Lowney
Autumn is Rachel Hutson’s favorite time of the year. The talented Dartmouth wife and mother of five is known in the picturesque seaside community for her beautiful cakes and delicious desserts, as well her ability to create mouthwatering meals from cuts of meats and simple ingredients. Hutson is also known by her family and lucky friends for whipping up a variety of delicious fall desserts. With a bounty of fruits and vegetables available at her doorstep throughout most of the year, it’s no wonder why the Canton native has taken advantage of the Baking and Pastry Arts program at Bristol Community College and earned an associate’s degree last year. “I started making birthday cakes for my son 14 years ago, and I’ve been making

them ever since,” she says, adding that her discovery led her to study with Chef Gloria Cabral and others at the college. Hutson is now studying Culinary Arts at BCC and hopes to earn a second degree next year. “Pumpkin is a great fruit or vegetable, depending on who you are talking to,” Hutson begins, adding that she enjoys sitting by the fire with her family on cool nights and talking about apple and pumpkin picking and hayrides that her family enjoys on trips throughout the South Coast. “We love to make Jack-oLanterns,” she shares. “It’s fun and it brings out the children’s creativity.” Hutson laughs when questioned about the country’s recent obsession with the colorful gourd.

“You either love pumpkin or you don’t,” she says. “People who love it are happy when everything that’s pumpkin flavored starts appearing in supermarkets and coffee shops. “Pumpkin has evolved over the years,” Hutson continues, explaining that many decades ago pumpkin was used for pies and fall desserts around the holidays or prepared for side dishes. Now pumpkinflavored treats are sold though much of the year, and especially when the leaves start to fall or when children and families return to school. “I used to live on a pumpkin farm and grew them but now we shop at local markets and travel throughout the area to purchase vegetables and buy apples, squash, and pumpkins,” she says. “I enjoy making pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, and pumpkin cookies, but my all-time favorite is making pumpkin whoopie-pies that are filled with a cream cheese
“Pumpkin is a great fruit or vegetable, depending on who you are talking to” frosting. My children and their friends just love them.” Hutson shares that one treat that she likes to prepare as a fall entree is pumpkin ravioli. “This is so good,” she emphasizes, adding that while she makes her own pasta, many local vendors and pasta emporiums sell pumpkin ravioli during this time of year as a delicious alternative to storebought macaroni or spaghetti. “My husband Chris also enjoys pumpkin beer or pumpkin whiskey,” she quips. The busy mother, who is the president of the DeMello School Parent Teacher Organization, emphasizes the importance of educating children about the importance of supporting local farmers. “Our area farmers are keeping our crops alive and

n addition to recording numerous albums and touring the world with the punk rock band A Wilhelm Scream, this New Bedford native has taken his passion for percussion to a new level – designing, crafting, and marketing his own line of custom drums, a pursuit that is gaining him a growing clientele of respected drummers throughout the music industry. From his workshop in the north end of New Bedford, Angelini’s Wail City drum company is prospering thanks to a unique quality product and customer service that separates him from many of the more high-profile competitors. But to those around him, Angelini’s success is not a total surprise. “Nick’s a grinder – he’s devoted to whatever he does,” says guitarist Trevor Reilly, a bandmate of Angelini’s for 22 years in A Wilhelm Scream. “He doesn’t quit. He’s got his family’s work ethic and it shows in everything he does.” And what he does is earning him an international reputation. Music fans around the world buy his albums and

What began with a group of adolescent friends struggling to learn their instruments in a New Bedford garage is today on the cusp of what he refers to as “the dream” – a life devoted to making and playing drums. By holding true to his ambitions, Angelini has found himself respected, rewarded, and admired by friends and peers. When he’s not driving a beer delivery truck around the South Coast he can be found on stage, in the recording studio, or in his workshop, content but inspired. “Every drum Nick makes is different, because every drummer who orders one wants something different,” says New Bedford drummer Tom O’Leary.

Angelini’s creations are evidence that all drums are not created equal. Many drummers will admit that the first time they played a Wail City drum was the last time they played anything else, and that the sounds that Angelini’s drums provide are comparable or better than any top-of-the-line brands that have greater notoriety. “As a professional drummer I want the

"Every successful company, whether it’s Marshall amps or Fender guitars, started with a devoted artist crafting something they love. Wail City is no different." enough, he recently produced a line of drums particularly special to players from the South Coast: three snare drums built of wood from the legendary Lincoln Park roller coaster in Dartmouth, adorned with painted designs by Brian Chainay of New Bedford. “I discovered Nick and A Wilhelm Scream when I was 13,” O’Leary says. “They were just starting to go national. My friends and I were excited that a band from New Bedford was touring and playing with all of these other punk bands that we loved. There was a sense of pride in what they were doing. When I got wind that he was making his own drums at Wail City I thought it was so cool that I could own drums made by one of my favorite drummers. I’ve heard him play his own full drum kit at concerts – it sounds incredible and looks cool.” In 2019 O’Leary wrote a story about Angelini and Wail City for the nationally distributed magazine, Drum Head. Ron Poitras became a Wail City client after the first time he heard Angelini perform – a 2015 concert with the punk cover band Really Bad Religion at Wings Court in downtown New Bedford. The owner and engineer at Feedback Studio in Freetown, Poitras currently owns two Wail City snare drums and uses them with every drummer he records. “The first time I heard a Wail City drum I was in love with the sound of it,” Poitras says. “When drummers come into my studio they usually bring their own brand-name snare, but I’ll say to them ‘I’ve got this drum I want you to give a try’ and they’ll want to use it without any debate. I’ve used it on every project I’ve done for the last six years.”

Finding the rhythm
Angelini first took to the drums at the age of 16, playing “dirty punk rock songs” in the garage of a friend’s home with the band Billy Ruffian. “I always wanted to be in a band, travelling and playing in front of people,” Angelini says. “When I started playing with my friends I didn’t feel like I was very good, but I enjoyed doing it and stuck with it. My first band kinda fell apart, but when Trevor and Jon [Teves] said they were interested in having me join their band I was super excited – I always looked up to those guys, they were way more pro than we were.” And Angelini would soon realize his globe-trotting goal. Originally known as Smackin’ Isaiah, A Wilhelm Scream has released five albums and done multiple tours of the United States, Europe, Australia, and Japan. “Playing with A Wilhelm Scream has been a positive for Wail City,” Angelini says. “All my first customers were fans of the band, guys I met on tour, friends I’ve met along the way from around the world.” The first drum Angelini ever sold was to a drummer from Italy he met during a tour of Europe. ON MY MIND
Connecting flights of fancy by Paul Kandarian I’m writing about flying today, as I have in the past, because I have been very lucky of late to combine my passions of acting (and getting paid for it) and travel (and having someone else pay for it). This year alone I’ve been to Salt Lake City a couple of times, Nevada, Florida, California twice (San Fran area once, yay! LA once, not so yay), Indiana (they don’t want me, lord, I can go back there), and so on. I do it a lot, and tend to write about it a lot because travel fascinates me. And that includes the scanning process. Not the humiliating ritual of making you take your clothes off and then x-raying you after the pain of paying too much for the plane ticket, baggage fees, etc. I mean the scanning we all do intuitively as travelers trying to minimize our exposure to idiots. Scan #1: Security. Look left, then right, back and forth, and ascertain the shortest and least-family-filled line. At all costs, avoid that mind-numbing scene: getting behind a family of are-youkidding-me size, people who have those annoyingly cute family decals in the back window of their SUV that includes parents, kids, pets, dead grandparents, imaginary childhood friends, you name it, and who spend forever not just taking clothes off and running every single toy and transportation device their kids have through the x-ray machine, but also ignoring the screams of said children because they’ve just given up that fight while the rest of us look on and wish the floor would open up and swallow them whole, toys, strollers and all. Hint: follow business people – they’re seasoned vets at this. Scan #2: Any restaurant with a line. Never, but never get behind indecisive people. How can you tell they’re indecisive? They’ve got 17 bags of various sizes draped over their shoulders and/or in their hands because they couldn’t decide what to bring – so they

brought everything. You get behind these clowns at the counter where they stand, stroke their chins and go “I… don’t… know…” looking up at the menu board and taking longer to say “I don’t know” than it did for them to get all their crap through security, and you know you’re screwed and will likely die from hunger if you stay. Hint: bring your own food, which is also cheaper than paying 10 bucks for a tiny bag of salted tiny food bits at the gift shop.

Scan #3: The concourse. This is a challenge because no matter how wide the concourse is, the slowest and fattest will always be found in sluggish clumps taking up most of where you want to walk. If these people were impalas on the African savanna, they’d be the first ones the lions picked off at dinnertime. Hint: walk fast and agilely and dart around them like angry motorists on the Southeast Expressway, calling on your Boston-traffic roots to get you through.
