Assateague Island, MD While snow days often mean staying cozy indoors, I find myself drawn outside, camera in hand, chasing the beauty of winter’s touch. At Assateague Seashore, the frozen marshy landscape stretched endlessly, offering a stark contrast to its vibrant summer persona. The icy stillness and muted tones felt calming yet powerful, as if nature had pressed pause on its usual rhythm. For me, exploring these summer destinations in winter is a chance to see their hidden beauty—a quieter, more contemplative version of themselves. The vastness of the frozen marsh was both humbling and inspiring, a reminder of how snow can transform even the most familiar places. Photo and description by Svetlana Leahy

Cambridge, MD On an unseasonably warm winter’s late afternoon, I headed to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in hopes of seeing the thousands of snow geese and tundra swans that hang out there. They did not disappoint. I shot a few hundred photos of the birds soaring and swirling. My day was complete–or so I thought. I watched the sunset, then packed up my camera gear, ready to head home. But as I made my way down Wildlife Drive, twilight set in, and this view stopped me in my tracks. There’s nothing like the deep, vibrant blue of the sky at twilight. Add a touch of post-sunset orange, a dramatic moon, and the planet Venus–and I was spellbound. I was the only human on Wildlife Drive, surrounded by the distant honks of geese, getting ready to settle in for the night. Serenity indeed. Photo and description by Jill Jasuta

A History of Resilience OXFORD’S WATER’S EDGE MUSEUM UNVEILS POWERFUL STORIES OF THE FOUNDING BLACK FAMILIES OF AMERICA

n the small port town of Oxford, MD, a beautifully crafted museum houses a collection of visual arts, music and written words that dynamically convey the role of the Black community on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the early 20th century. community. Although it opened in February of 2021, the Water’s Edge Museum is rooted in stories that began before the founding of the Nation. The museum space is limited, but the works displayed explode with visual interest, almost jumping from the walls. Instead of separating the artwork with blank lengths of wall, the Water’s Edge Museum hangs the art

in a close-knit group—spirited and moving like the community it represents. The artworks serve as a visual record of their historical subject. Museum Assistant Director Kay L. Brown, a passionate proponent of the museum’s stories, says that Water’s Edge “is about letting people know of a phenomenal, resilient people.”

“The museum is about letting people know of a phenomenal, resilient people. There is so much more to everyone’s story if you just take the time to listen and learn.” — Kay L. Brown While the visual works profoundly connect viewers with the power of this community’s history, the museum’s depth extends to musical history as well. Spirituals, one of the earliest and most globally influential art forms to emerge from America, was born within the Black community. Created and sung in fields, homes and churches, spirituals developed as a fusion of Bible verses, African rhythms and codes that told unique stories or shared important messages. This museum is far from a fleeting glimpse of a small group destined to be forgotten. Its thoughtful design, rich history and ongoing initiatives resonate long after your visit. The Water’s Edge Museum invites you to explore the richness of history and those who shaped it. In the enthusiastic words of Kay Brown: “There is so much more to everyone’s story if you just take the time to listen and learn.” CS

Unwavering Sophistication

2024

There are no stereotypes or caricatures, only the recorded and appreciated self-respect inherent in the subjects. Represented are the founding Black families of America. These men and women, brought from Africa and enslaved, cultivated millions of acres and, despite the desperate situation, passed their pride on to their descendants. The memorable works of Ruth Starr Rose make up the majority of the art presented at the Water’s Edge. The artist, born in Eau Claire, WI, was from an affluent family who moved to the Eastern Shore. Despite the social norms of the time, she and her mother attended DeShields United Methodist Church, a church in the African American community. There she developed a love for the spirituals, the music and the deep faith that anchored the people around her. Her work focuses on the lives of the vibrant society she respected.

Land of the Brave AUTHOR AND LOCAL RESIDENT JIM DUFFY TAKES READERS ON 32 UNDERGROUND RAILROAD JOURNEYS LESS TRAVELED The inspiring, true-life stories of the Underground Railroad come back to life in Tubman Travels: 32 Underground Railroad Journeys on Delmarva. Author and award-winning writer Jim Duffy wandered the backroads and small towns of Maryland’s Eastern Shore and Delaware to put modern-day travelers in touch with stories from the lives of men and women who set out against all odds in search of freedom from slavery. The 19th-century heroes of these stories include not just the most famous of the region’s escaped slaves, Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, but also an array of lesser-known figures whose journeys out of bondage speak volumes about the timeless themes of courage, love, family and faith. Our interview with Jim details his journey in writing this book and the harrowing experiences that await its readers.

Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway

What inspired you to write this book? When I arrived on the Eastern Shore 20 years ago, I knew only the broad outline of Harriet Tubman’s story. But I decided to try and learn more since I had landed on her native turf. I started attending meetings of a grassroots “Harriet Tubman Discussion Group.” Each month, talented local historians John Creighton and Pat Lewis led us on deep dives into the details of this, that, or another episode in Tubman’s life. They showed me that digging a little deeper, past the stuff you find on roadside markers and museum panels, can lead not to footnote hell, but to levels that are richer, more moving, and more inspirational. My book is an attempt to share that revelation in a reader-friendly way. The mission statement is “storytelling that goes a little deeper.” How did you come up with its concept of 32 Underground Railroad journeys? I didn’t delve into the Underground Railroad as fodder for a book. It was just personal interest. I’m a little mystified to this day about the genesis of Tubman Travels. After my first book came out, Eastern Shore Road Trips:

40

CoastalStyleMag.com • January/February 2025

27 One-Day Adventures on Delmarva, I couldn’t decide on a followup topic. There were several possibilities. Then a crazy thing happened. I woke up one morning. I was coming down the steps, still half asleep, and I knew I was going to write about the Underground Railroad. The topic wasn’t on my list of possibilities. Chalk it up to one of those go-figure moments in life. The book is organized around “journeys,” but that word has a double meaning. There is the journey of a freedom seeker in the past, of course, but there is also the journey readers can take in the present—to a modern-day place where they can walk in the footsteps of Underground Railroad heroes. Each “journey” chapter is self-contained—you could read the book from start to finish, but you don’t have to. You could instead read the chapter that matches your upcoming travel plans Say, which of these stories unfolded around Easton? Or Chestertown? Or Dover? In that way, the book tries to promote the core mission of my Secrets of the Eastern Shore brand: to inspire people to get out and explore the Peninsula and learn its stories.

Did you learn anything unexpected during this process? So many things! I will choose just a couple. My original vision for the book was to focus on Delmarva’s most famous champions of freedom in slavery times—Tubman and Frederick Douglass. But I met so many other, lesser-known heroes along the way. Black men like Samuel Burris and Isaac Mason. Black women like Harriet Shephard and Lear Green. White folks like John Hunn and Thomas Garrett. I thought readers might love meeting new-to-them characters in addition to the more famous names, so the book is about one-third Tubman, one-third Douglass, and one-third those lesser-known heroes. The other thing I’ll mention might sound counterintuitive. I came away from my work on Tubman Travels with a deep and abiding respect for people who decided not to run for freedom, to never set foot along the Underground Railroad. Such folks were not necessarily weak or afraid or trapped. Many had opportunities, but they turned them down—and for compelling reasons. Aging parents needed them, for instance, or they couldn’t bring themselves to leave a child or

or nephew or niece behind. Those folks who decided to stay and endure slavery were in some ways every bit as brave and inspiring as the people who fled. What was the most dangerous or daunting of the journeys and why? Every journey in the book has harrowing aspects. One that stands out is the last of Harriet Tubman’s journeys back into the danger zone—one I describe in a chapter titled, “The Lord Giveth, and the Lord Taketh Away.” She made this journey in the most hazardous days of the Underground Railroad, at a point when the slave powers were devoting everything they had to catching runaways and shutting the Railroad down. Tubman’s friends begged her not to go, but she went anyway. She wanted to bring a sister out of slavery. Then, upon arriving, she learned that her sister had died. Incredibly, in the midst of her grief, Tubman decided to lead a few stray strangers to freedom. That journey was harrowing in the extreme— and its near-miraculous resolution is a powerful demonstration of the role faith and prayer played in Tubman’s work. Which journeys are most impactful? Ones that you would encourage readers to take if they cannot experience all 32? A good choice here would be the one-two punch of chapters titled “The Fight of His Life” and “A Long and Desperate Walk in Chains.” They are set along a hugely popular travel destination, Route 33, as it runs from Easton through St. Michaels and out towards Tilghman Island. This is where Frederick Douglass endured the worst that slavery had to deliver. This is where he hit his lowest point in life— broken, he confessed, in body, mind and spirit. The fact that he went on to rise from those depths and become an American hero of the first order—it’s incredible to think about, and a testament to the power of the human spirit. What should we embrace most when remembering Harriet Tubman? The driving forces in Tubman’s life were things that resonate in our American lives today—unshakeable devotion to family and community, a deep and abiding religious faith, and a commitment to the freedom and worth of all individuals. Her story may have unfolded in the past, but it’s full of inspiration for our present and future times—that’s what I hope folks find in the book. CS

Textures of Humanity THE “EVERY DAY MAN” EXHIBIT AT REHOBOTH ART LEAGUE PRESENTS DANE TILGHMAN’S VIBRANT DEPICTIONS OF RESILIENCE AND FAITH

D

ane Tilghman is a celebrated artist whose work pays tribute to the rich tapestry of African American culture and history. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Dane found early inspiration in the stories of his ancestors and the vibrant communities around him. Though not an Eastern Shore native, his connection to the Peninsula runs deep. His work often reflects the traditions and heritage of the region, weaving narratives of resilience, faith and celebration. Art enthusiasts can experience Dane’s works at the Rehoboth Art League during Every Day Man—an exhibit running from February 7-March 9 in its Cockran Gallery. Dane’s artistic journey began in childhood, when he would sketch scenes from everyday life and explore the work of great masters. As he matured, he developed a unique style blending realism with elements of folk art. His use of vivid colors, dynamic compositions, and textured surfaces has become his hallmark, making his pieces instantly recognizable. Focusing on themes of family, spirituality, music and sports, Dane’s work captures the essence of African American life, particularly during the early-to-mid 20th century. His paintings of jazz musicians in smoky clubs, church choirs raising their voices in harmony, and children playing in sunlit fields evoke a profound sense of nostalgia and cultural pride. His work has been exhibited at the African American Museum in Philadelphia, and also in one-man shows at Howard University, University of Pennsylvania, Penn State and the Butler Institute of Fine Art in Youngstown, OH, among others. He was recently commissioned to create artwork for the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, displayed throughout the arena. One of his most iconic series, Homage to the Game, celebrates the unsung heroes of the Negro Leagues, portraying baseball players with dignity and grace while highlighting their contributions to the sport and society. Collectors of Dane’s artwork include notables such as Dave Winfield, Nelson Mandela, the estate of Ossie Davis, Nabisco Corporation and Astra-Zeneca. In 2004, Kutztown University commissioned him for a commemorative poster for the 50th Anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education.

Clifton’s artistic journey began as a hobby, sketching waterfowl and other wildlife he observed during hunting trips with his father. Over time, his talent for capturing intricate details and lifelike depictions of animals grew, transforming his passion into a professional career. Today, he is best known for his vibrant and realistic portrayals of birds, particularly waterfowl, which have earned him international acclaim. His work has graced the covers of numerous state and federal duck stamps, a distinction that highlights both his artistic skill and his dedication to conservation. Winning the prestigious 20072008 Federal Duck Stamp Contest, Clifton’s depiction of a pair of northern pintails not only cemented his reputation but also contributed significantly to wetland preservation efforts, as funds from stamp sales support wildlife habitat restoration. He won the contest for a second time in 2021-2022. Working from his home studio overlooking the marshes, Richard uses a combination of photographs, sketches, and direct observation to inform his art. His paintings often showcase the interplay of light, water, and feathers, with each piece reflecting his intimate knowledge of his subjects. Whether it's a flock of geese taking flight against a golden sunrise or a solitary heron standing in a quiet estuary, Richard’s art captures the soul of the wild. Beyond painting, Richard is a passionate advocate for conservation, regularly donating his artwork to wildlife organizations and participating in events that promote environmental awareness. Through his art, he not only celebrates the beauty of Delaware’s ecosystems, but also inspires others to cherish and protect it. Richard’s legacy is one of artistry, stewardship and a profound connection to the land and wildlife that he holds dear. To view more of Richard’s works, visit his website at RichardClifton.com. CS

Inspiring Surroundings CAPTIVATED BY THE PEACEFUL AND PICTURESQUE SETTINGS OF THE SHORE, PATTI LUCAS HOPKINS PAINTS TO HER HEART’S CONTENT

P

atti Lucas Hopkins is a Dorchester County-based artist whose work captures the raw, natural beauty of the world around her. Often inspired by the Chesapeake Bay region, her works reflect a deep connection to the water, lands and wildlife that define her surroundings. Born and raised in Annapolis, Patti grew up exploring the marshlands, collecting shells and sketching scenes of osprey nesting along the bay. These early experiences shaped her creative voice, rooted in an appreciation for the delicate balance between light, texture and form. Patti finds inspiration and purpose all around her. She lives with her husband, dogs and chickens on a farm located along the Little Choptank River, surrounded by wild geese, deer, fox and wild turkeys. Her studio, a converted barn with weathered beams and wide windows, provides an idyllic setting for expression. At the ready are jars of pigments, stacks of of canvases and tables holding dried flowers, feathers and driftwood she uses as references. Patti continuously challenges herself, experimenting with layering techniques and media—like blending encaustic wax with oils —to create her compositions.

Her signature series, Tides and Textures, explores the fluidity of the shoreline, with each piece echoing the motion of waves meeting sand. These works have been praised for their tactile quality—viewers feel compelled to reach out and touch the shimmering, layered surfaces. Patti sees this response as a triumph. Art, she says, should invite people to feel, not just look. “After nearly 25 years of oil painting rural landscapes, bay views, figures in the landscape and still life, I continue to study and work on capturing mood with light and shadow in my paintings,” Patti says. “I love painting with oil and continue to explore new ways to build my paintings to another level.” Patti also engages with the community, teaching workshops and donating her art to conservation efforts. Her commitment to sustainability extends to her materials, which include eco-friendly paints and repurposed wood for frames. Through her art, she continues to celebrate the natural beauty of the Eastern Shore, preserving its essence for future generations to cherish. PROMOTIONAL SECTION

It’s a new year, get motivated to exercise With colder temperatures and more hours of darkness, it can be hard to find motivation to work out in the winter. Here are some ideas to stay motivated.

• Find an accountability buddy or group. It’s a lot easier to cancel on yourself than a friend. Arrange to meet up with on a friend or group to exercise in the morning or go for a walk with coworkers at lunch. If you have an accountability buddy who isn’t local, pick a time to check in with each other about that day’s workout. • Set goals. Find a goal that will keep you encouraged. Adults should complete a minimum of 150 minutes per week of moderateintensity exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Goal ideas could include working out a certain number of days per week, hitting a certain mileage in a month for running or walking, improving your 5K time or reaching a new distance on the spin bike. 56

CoastalStyleMag.com • January/February 2025

• Sign up for an event. It can help to have an event to work toward. For example, if you know you must complete a 5K (3.1 miles) on a certain date, you’ll either need to work up to this goal or you’ll get to the event and not be ready. • Don’t overexert yourself too quickly. Faster isn’t always better, and overwhelming yourself could make exercise less fun. Don’t push yourself into going too fast too quickly, whether you’re running, walking or exercising on the elliptical or spin bike. Slow efforts are great for building endurance. If you’re getting into running — or if you’ve been doing it for years — run-walk intervals (aka the Galloway Method) are great for maintaining energy throughout your run and having small moments to look forward to.

• Stick to a routine. Things come up, and you don’t have to be a stickler for the schedule but forming a routine can keep you on track. Examples could include going to a workout or yoga class at the same time every week or going for a walk as soon as you get home from work every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. • Join a gym. Paying to become a gym member may encourage you to go there, or maybe it’s the support you receive while at the gym or the engaging classes you take. Belonging to a gym also provides opportunities to work out inside in a heated environment when it’s cold, snowy or icy outside. For those who can benefit from a gym staffed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, clinical exercise physiologists and exercise specialists, ask your primary care physician about getting a referral for TidalHealth Adult Fitness. TidalHealth Adult Fitness has locations in Salisbury and Ocean Pines. Always check with your primary care provider before starting an exercise routine. Don’t get sidelined by sports injuries As winter sports season kicks into high gear, student-athletes face unique challenges that can lead to injuries. From the basketball court to the wrestling mat, preparation is key to minimizing risks and staying in the game. Under the guidance of coaches and trainers, engaging in a pre-season conditioning program and focusing on proper warm-up techniques can go a long way in reducing injuries. However, even with the best preparation, injuries can still occur. Understanding acute vs. Chronic sports injuries Sports injuries are generally classified as either acute or chronic, depending on how they develop. Acute injuries occur suddenly, often during a specific incident that the athlete remembers clearly. For instance, a basketball player might feel a sharp “pop” in their ankle while landing awkwardly, with immediate swelling and pain following. Chronic injuries, on the other hand, develop gradually over time. A hockey player, for example, may notice worsening pain in their shoulder after weeks of repetitive shooting motions, without recalling a single triggering moment.

guidelines to follow. An acute injury, such as a twisted knee that swells up shortly after, may indicate a more serious issue, like a ligament tear, and warrants prompt evaluation. If an injury causes enough pain or discomfort to prevent an athlete from participating in their sport, or if a chronic injury shows no improvement over time, it’s wise to consult a healthcare professional. The role of athletic trainers and physical therapists in injury management Certified athletic trainers and physical therapists play a crucial role in managing sports injuries. These professionals can not only provide initial treatment but also help determine whether an athlete needs further evaluation from a doctor. Although injuries are an inevitable part of sports, seeking timely care and using available resources can help athletes recover safely and get back to doing what they love this winter season.

Give yourself the gift of a primary care provider By Jordan Braniff, DNP, CRNP, FNP-C As we usher in the new year, many of us embark on a journey of selfimprovement and personal growth. One crucial aspect of this journey is making self-care a top priority. While self-care encompasses a wide range of practices, from mindfulness and exercise to hobbies and relaxation, one essential step in this process is finding a primary care provider. Having a primary care provider is the foundation of proactive healthcare. Regular check-ups and preventative care can catch potential health issues early, allowing for timely intervention and better outcomes. This approach is not just about treating illnesses, but also about promoting overall well-being and preventing diseases before they start. A primary care provider also provides a continuous and comprehensive approach to your healthcare. They get to know your medical history, lifestyle, and preferences, enabling them to offer personalized guidance and recommendations. This familiarity fosters a trusting and collaborative relationship, empowering you to take charge of your health effectively. During our busy lives, it’s easy to overlook healthcare until a problem arises. However, investing in a primary care provider ensures you have a reliable healthcare partner throughout the year, guiding you on

nutrition, exercise, immunizations, and screenings. In a world filled with constant distractions and stressors, prioritizing self-care is an act of self-compassion. Finding a primary care provider is a crucial step in this journey, offering you not just healthcare but also peace of mind. So, as you set your intentions for the new year, make self-care and your health a top priority, and consider finding a primary care provider to support your quest for a healthier and happier you.

Jordan Braniff DNP, CRNP, FNP-C is a native of Worcester County and a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School. He is board-certified in family medicine by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. A former emergency department nurse and longtime volunteer firefighter/ EMT, Braniff earned his Bachelor of Science degree and became a registered nurse at Salisbury University. AN OCEANFRONT, MEMORYMAKING RESIDENCE IS CUSTOMBUILT FOR A LARGE FAMILY IN BETHANY BEACH Written by Kristen Hampshire Photography by Dana Hoff Photography

HOME

L

iterally a tall order that also spans far and wide, this nearly 9,500 squarefoot Bethany Beach retreat was designed and built by Marnie Custom Homes for a Washington D.C. family. A compound in its own right, every space has a purpose, from two outdoor cedar showers for rinsing off salt and sand to a library with an authentic rolling ladder and a generous bunk room. All told, there are nine bedrooms, an equal number of bathrooms, walls of windows overlooking the Atlantic, and oceanfront decks for days. The beach breathes into the four-story home, which offers living space for a large family and guests without sacrificing airy headroom, thanks to skillful engineering for ductwork that minimizes ceiling volume. The completed home by custom builder Marnie Oursler takes the place of a tear-down. With a vision of beachfront memory-making, the family found the property and enlisted her company to carry it out. Host of DIY Network’s “Big Beach Builds” and CEO of her eponymous firm, Marnie specializes in sustainable, LEED-certified beach homes using locally sourced materials. Marnie shares the backstory and build story of Wavehaven during a walkthrough of a different work-in-progress. Describing the process with an energy and command over the construction environment, it’s easy to see why homeowners trust her with the creation of a family milestone. The most rewarding part, Marnie says, was delivering on the client’s dream. “They were so excited about the build and completing it for their family,” she relates.

CREATIVE CRAFTSMANSHIP

island surfaces with slightly sunken quartz inlay for prep. Despite its elegance, this kitchen is designed for real cooking; a truly functional space for a family that cooks, dines and entertains together. “Seating and island space is always a priority,” Marnie says. “We always talk through the traffic pattern—when do you grill out or cook in? How many people in the family participate? What are their roles?” As a result of these pre-design discussions, there are three sinks: a main five-foot galley sink and auxiliary sink in the prep island, along with a sink against the wall.

for minimalist design and dramatic artwork. “We’re not all about building a showpiece,” Mark says. “It’s about form, fit, function and livability, and that’s what we were going for. And, being in a beach community, there can be a lot of conformity. That was not even part of our thought process. We had a vision in mind.” The couple enlisted Dion Lamb of CRx

Construction and architect Jeffrey P. Manley at Martin Manley Architects to breathe life into their concept. Dion says, “Mark and Jeff are such a great example of the type of collaborative work we do with clients. We are very much in the realm of being our clients’ partners, and we spent a lot of time on the front end identifying materials and vendors.”

EFFORTLESSLY MERGING FORM AND FUNCTION Clean lines and minimalistic design reflect the calm of the tributary outside.

In the Clear But before the design and specifying process, the team first had to determine whether the property was even buildable. Initially, the couple had been undergoing a feasibility study on a property two streets away from the current site. Then, nearing the close date, an acquaintance from Sussex County suggested, “Go take a look at this one.” The lot had been on the market for two years. Mark and Jeff quickly discovered why. “It was basically a jungle,” quips Jeff of the wildly overgrown, untouched land. A neighbor wandered over to say hello and delivered a “30-minute tutorial” on why the couple should not buy the lot. “No one should live here,” he told them. “There are bugs, flies, and your home will flood.” They understood his point. “We were concerned we would not have water views,” Jeff adds. The realtor assured Mark and Jeff, “This guy just doesn’t want a neighbor.” (Now, they are all great friends.)

CRx Construction launched some drones to capture footage of the vista beyond the weedy, woody mess. Sure enough, it revealed a stunning viewshed of Love Creek, which flows into Rehoboth Bay from the northwest. The 14½-acre lot is primarily wetlands with only 1½ acres of property that could be developed. “It was really difficult to visualize what was possible there,” Dion says. “It looked like overgrown marshland and scrag forest.” But after research, including aerial photography, Dion established the necessary 9-foot height to raise the home to achieve desired views. Significant site prep was required before breaking ground, with attention to maintaining the marshland as nature intended. Mark says, “There are now unobstructed views of the water, and that was the over-arching design goal, above everything else.”

Minimalist and Monochromatic “We don’t like a lot of color or clutter in the home,” says Jeff, emphasizing the couple’s preference for clean lines, seamless surfaces and a simple, unified color concept for the inside and out. The exterior features heat-treated spruce with custom stain from Vintage Woods in Gypsum, Colorado. Mark says they were “dead set on getting gray siding that did not look painted.” An exposed aggregate driveway in gray continues the theme. “Those tend to be tan or off-white, but we wanted gray—which was a major undertaking,” Mark says. The solution was sourcing Delaware River rock to achieve the desired color. “The beautiful gray exposed river rock draws you into the home and aligns with the gray siding,” Mark says.

“We’re not all about building a showpiece. It’s about form, fit, function and livability, and that’s what we were going for.” — Mark Single, homeowner

One exception to the monochromatic facade are the rich mahogany eaves that tie in with the woodland surroundings. Otherwise, shades of gray continue through the five-bedroom, five-bathroom home, eliminating any cavernous feeling from its nearly 4,000 sq. ft. dimensions. The couple prefers to let their vibrant art collection do the talking. “We love modern images and color fields,” Mark says, “and we have several pieces from Colorado and a couple from Porte Vallarta.” They also selected innovative alternative materials which offered needed practicality. For example, the fireplace cladding, Dekton by Cosentino, is a fabricated porcelain that mimics concrete, but without the weight— allowing for expansive 10-by-5-feet panels that reach floor to ceiling. “Typical stone is 1-inch or 1¼-inch, while Dekton is much thinner at 3/8-inch thick,” Dion explains. “It gives the fireplace a unique look without being overly heavy, but it is fragile to work with in larger formats, so it takes additional labor and expertise.” All told, the material required five specialists to properly install it. The crisp linear features extend to the floating staircase by Viewrail, which offers a library of tread types, handrails, wood species and more.

Views by Purpose Upon entering the front door, a clear sight line to the back of the home’s wall of windows reveals a serene, waterfront backdrop. “It’s as if you are walking out onto the water and into nature,” Jeff says. Only three rooms are without windows: the master suite closet, laundry room and mud room, which shows views when the door is open. Expansive, 10-foot glass panels by Pella stretch from floor to ceiling. Even the front door is flanked by glass. The Pella pivot door swings from the middle for a sleek, wide entrance. Space planning also centered on capturing the best views, Dion says, explaining how the layout positions the lower level master suite and main living area at the back of the home. Upstairs is a secondary entertainment getaway with a billiard table. “That is an evening space where we unwind from the day,” Jeff says, noting they decided on the pool table after renting vacation homes. “Our nieces and nephews would congregate around the table.” Every space has a purpose, going back to the couple’s desire for a home that functions for the way they live. The kitchen is Mark’s spot, with Cabico custom cabinetry that push to open—resulting in a clean-lined alternative to cabinetry with hardware. The same is true for the wood-paneled refrigerator and freezer. A quartzite backsplash and countertop with a waterfall treatment add movement to the kitchen’s primarily charcoal color palette, which is offset by light European oak engineered hardwood floors in Tableau Monet by Monarch Plank.

Nature On Deck Ever mindful of maintaining unobstructed views, the couple passed on typical railings around the pool, opting instead for a planting shelf that handles the necessary zoning requirements beautifully. “The plants are sitting on a shelf that is 30 feet below the deck,” Mark says. Jeff notes, “The planting shelf accomplishes two things. One, there’s no railing. Two, it was important to me to bring nature right up to the pool deck while allowing us to look out to a plain of wetlands.” Ipe decking withstands the elements along with a screened-in porch, advised by CRx Construction as protection from the insectprone tidal marsh environment. The porch spans the entire length of the living room. Finally, overhangs finished in mahogany double as an architectural feature while providing cover from the sun and creating an outdoor room feel. The house stands out, admit Mark and Jeff. And of all the houses the couple has built, bought, and sold, “This one really feels like home,” Mark says. CS

he ask was simple yet layered— create a living space to embody a family’s lifestyles, inspire memorable moments and accentuate the stunning seafront surroundings. The clients enlisted Andre Kikoski, AIA, LEED AP, principal of Andre Kikoski Architect (AKA), based in New York City, who was also a longtime college friend. The project kicked off during the pandemic, so the couple, their adult children and Andre would convene Sundays on Zoom. This weekly ritual became a sort of family dinner, conversing and passing ideas around like plates of food. But the dishes served in these discussions were inspiration, intention and

ideals for the way they’d live in Miami. Andre had designed the renovations for the family’s primary residence in New York City, as well as their place in the Hamptons. This Miami undertaking was a breezy departure—a totally different challenge. “There is an undeniable lifestyle feeling you get in Miami that is decidedly not New York,” says Andre, describing the cultural aesthetic as stylish yet relaxed, filled with ambiance and infused with Latin flavor. The question then became, “How do we choreograph this project so the family can take on a whole new level of engagement?” Social choreography is a focus for Andre, whose work spans both residential

and commercial environments, all with a special attention on engaging the memory, activating the senses and creating emotional connection points. His design process traverses aesthetics and creates experiences. “From the point of view of social absorption, it’s this idea of communitybuilding through the design of spaces,” he says. “What if we not only respect the place and this ethereal view, but because of our fondness of family, we also consider movement and produce spaces where everyone is very happy and very comfortable?” This, in fact, was the hypothetical question that ultimately steered the multi-phase architectural process.

Recreational Refinement The 5,000 sq.-ft. oceanfront high rise boasts walls of glass, outdoor living spaces and endless views of the Atlantic and pristinely white sand. “The whole house dissolves seamlessly into indoor-outdoor spaces,” Andre expresses. When conceptualizing, he says he leaned into the ocean’s calm to establish a theme of simplicity, refinement, connection with natural beauty—and pure joy. “We always begin with an investigation about what the project could be like,” he continues. After all, “we are creating a portrait of the client in space and materials,” he says. “They had never owned an apartment in Miami or spent a day there before acquiring this one,” he adds. “So, this is how they wanted to imagine their lives there.” Essentially, that lifestyle—and the design that would achieve it—centered on living with delicacy and lightness. Andre also borrowed Latin and Brazilian cues from a “sliver of a view” of the historic Miami Brickell Point from the apartment’s office. The design direction evolved as a fusion of mid-century modern with ocean wave-aligned curves, accented with a few Brazilian notes in homage to Miami’s distinctive culture. Organic, free-form furnishings and artwork complement the natural environment where sky meets sea, and sea meets sand. Overall, Andre says, “The elegant, spare space lets the power of the views and climate speak.”

Luminous Interactions Designed as a communal space to enjoy the surroundings, the main living area is thoughtfully appointed with pieces that function for the family while offering purity of design. A Vladamir Kagan sofa with curving silhouettes flanks a set of Jorge Zalszupin’s Brasilia lounge chairs with rich wood bases. A 1950s “dolphin” armchair in light-blue velvet echos the shape of the revered mammal. A trio of coffee tables fashioned from irregular slabs of naturally fallen Brazilian hardwood trees were “harvested” specifically for this space. The dining area opens up completely to the outdoors, giving the feeling of looking out over a luxury yacht’s prow above the waterline. Ceilings and walls in hand-troweled ancient Moroccan Tadelakt plaster introduce movement and artisanal texture with a luminous feel. Curated artwork from Ryan Lee Gallery is displayed throughout the home, spotlighting pieces by Giorgetti, Helen Frankenthaler, Vivian Springford, Donal Sultan and Charlotte Bergstrom. The Soltzman piece—a culmination of aluminum leaves, concrete discs and canvas—is centered over the sofa. “The aluminum interacts with the light outside and has this primal quality,” Andre relates.

For Each, a Personalized Place The bedrooms are designed to “transport each to a favorite place,” Andre says of the varying aesthetics in the primary suite and adult children’s spaces. Given the purpose of the home as a place to visit, convene and share with guests, Andre made a point of ensuring that each bedroom was unique—each to his or her own. Incorporated into the master suite are materials including Pau Ferro wood, Brazilian leather and fabrics with mid-century patterns. Though all the bedrooms have ocean views, this is the one bedroom where a bed can be positioned so the owners awaken to the ocean. The clients’ son’s bedroom speaks to his love of Japan, with subdued colors and shapes such as the fan-style angle of a custom bed reminiscent of ancient Zen monuments there. Their daughter chose a minimalist design with pure forms and occasional pops of color. Andre says the one word guests assign to the home upon visiting is “ethereal.” And the most rewarding aspect of the project was creating spaces that allow families to live more cohesively. “At the end of the day, that is what architecture and design are supposed to do,” he says. Bravo. CS

PARTING SHOT

Silent Snowfall Photo and description by Svetlana Leahy

S

now on the Ocean City Boardwalk is like a dream—a fleeting, magical moment that feels like a holiday all on its own. When I was growing up, snow was a common sight, but seeing it here brought a wave of nostalgia and pure excitement. When the forecast promised snow, I couldn’t wait. As soon as the flakes began to fall, I grabbed my camera and headed out. The untouched snow on the boardwalk was pristine, and with no footprints ahead of me, I made my own path through the quiet beauty. The snowfall didn’t last long— just enough to cover the ground. But I’ll never forget the peaceful magic of that night. CS
