ORCHESTRATING A LEGACY ESTATE
SOPHISTICATION AT SEAGROVE BEACH MAGNIFICENCE ON THE MAGOTHY RIVER
MAY/JUNE 2024
Settled on an elevated bluff overlooking the Wicomico River’s bend and surrounded by non-tidal ponds is a bucolic horse farm with several hundreds of acres of pastures, pristine coastal forested space — a delightfully recluse yet conveniently relevant island location. And on that Maryland escape is a majestic reproduction of an 18th century Williamsburg Manor house that stands like a seminal figure after a five-year, full-on historic preservation by Bryan LeCompte of Yard Designs, Inc. in Salisbury.
“I love history and creating timeless pieces, and this was a true opportunity to be a key instrument in bringing this home back to its glory, while making it a reflection of its owners,” Bryan says, who initially found the property in distress. It had been neglected and taken under the wing of equestrian lovers who appreciate its past and were inherently drawn to the land.
The landmark project was a labor of love for LeCompte, who brought his interior-exterior design experience to a rollcall of painstakingly detailed materials selections, installations and furnishings.
“The project’s biggest challenge was working on the interiors and exteriors at the same time,” Bryan says. “We began in 2018 and worked through the global pandemic, dealing with the industry’s challenges of supply and demand.”
“I was honored to be a part of this project and help the homeowners realize their vision,” he says, humbly proud of the outcome for its owners who breathe life into this legacy property.

THE POPULARITY OF FLIGHT CONTINUES TO REACH NEW HEIGHTS ACROSS THE SHORE WITH A HOST OF BENEFITS ON THE HORIZON
Written by Alex Csedrik | Photography by Svetlana Leahy
Across the Eastern Shore, it’s pretty common to hear people blow off steam by fishing, surfing, kayaking or other waterrelated activities. There’s one hobby though, that may not necessarily be thought of as a beach activity, but it’s fun in the sun nonetheless—flying. Throughout the region, a number of private pilots see the hobby as their oasis—a way to get a clear mind among the clear skies.
32 CoastalStyleMag.com • May/June 2024
Doug Motley
AT THE CONTROLS
Doug Motley enjoys the freedoms that flying provides him and uses his time in the sky to decompress from the pressures of his corporate role in asset management.
Doug Motley is one. As one of the managing principals of JLAM—a real estate investment and development firm that targets the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions—he helps people build wealth through private real estate investments. Making sure your business is growing while protecting people’s money can be very rewarding, but it comes with a lot of responsibility. While getting your private pilot’s license isn’t exactly easy either, the effort for both is worth it, according to Motley. “It’s challenging to balance leading a business and finding the necessary time to practice flying, but it has been so rewarding!”
At times, Motley’s aviation journey hasn’t been smooth sailing— or rather, flying. Besides needing good time management skills to accumulate the requisite number of hours you need to get your license–at least 40–the best laid plans can quickly go awry if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate by providing nice weather. Routine maintenance on a plane can also keep you grounded.
“Flying requires a lot of preparation and planning, but also recognizing new information. It’s all about risk management, which is very similar to my role with JLAM... I’ll weigh the risk/reward profile of an investment and make choices that help us prevent losses for our investors. Neither investments or flying will ever be risk-free, but I can process information and use my skills to minimize turbulence.”
— Doug Motley
None of this surprises him, though. He anticipates unexpected challenges to arise, something that his two-decades-plus career in real estate has taught him. “Flying requires a lot of preparation and planning, but also recognizing new information,” he says. “It’s all about risk management, which is very similar to my role with JLAM. At work, I’m thinking about future market conditions and when is the right time to make a certain endeavor. As new information comes up, I need to process and incorporate it into decision-making. Just like I’d rather not take a flight that I think could end up being bad (even if the weather turns out to be OK), I’ll weigh the risk/reward profile of an investment and make choices that help us prevent losses for our investors. Neither investments or flying will ever be risk-free, but I can process information and use my skills to minimize turbulence.”
Still, this hobby is a great reminder about the need for patience— both personally and professionally—because all the hard work can lead to an unbelievable payoff. “My first solo flight was exhilarating,” Motley describes. “Once I got in the air and was at altitude, I looked over and realized it was the first time I had ever been in an airplane by myself. It was very peaceful and beautiful.”

Motley isn’t alone as someone who finds solace in the skies.
John Chirtea, perhaps one of the most famous private pilots in the country right now, also finds flying as the ultimate stressreliever. Coincidentally, Chirtea also had a career in real estate development—he bought land and built commercial, multifamily and residential projects, before retiring. “No better way to relieve stress than to hop into one of my planes and just go punch holes in the sky for an hour or so,” he claims.
It may have been this innocent intention that led to Chirtea’s new-found notoriety when he flew over President Biden’s airspace in November 2023. “President Biden has his Rehoboth Beach home, and he often visits there to unwind from his job. Whenever he visits, a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) will be placed in a 10-30 mile circle surrounding his home. I inadvertently missed the notice, and chose to fly on that day.”
Chirtea, who took his first flying lesson in 1955, had no clue he was in store for the most eventful trip of his life. He simply was heading north with a guest to show the basics of flying. One turn diverted him south, which meant he was accidentally on a direct course over the President’s beach house.
“I looked out to my left, and close to my wing was a large orange Coast Guard helicopter,” Chirtea describes. “He was flashing a sign ‘Tune to 121.5’, which is the emergency radio frequency. The transmission was garbled, so I told him to meet me down at the nearby runway. He followed me down, and after we got out of our planes, we introduced ourselves.”
If this sounds like this would create aggravation rather than cure it, things only got more intense from there. Chirtea happened to have left his pilot license in his wallet at his house, which was five minutes away from the runway. He told the Coast Guard pilot who was surveying the situation that he’d run home quickly to get his wallet. By the time he returned with his license, the Coast Guard was gone. Instead, it escalated—and quite seriously.
“Two Secret Service agents and a Delaware State Police officer arrived for 45 minutes of questions,” Chirtea admitted. Ultimately, the massive misunderstanding was cleared up. The FAA issued Chirtea a case-closed report, and he sent a letter of apology to President Biden, which actually led to a response.
Regardless, none of the infamy has discouraged Chirtea from flying or turned his passion into a source of stress. “I will be more careful that I am aware of TFRs,” he assures.
If aviation sounds like your kind of hobby, where to get started may seem daunting. Fortunately, Michael Freed, owner of Ocean Aviation Flight Academy, can help. His flight school has two locations—Ocean City Municipal Airport and the Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown.
Freed, who’s celebrating 50 years since taking his first flight training in 1974, quickly fell in love with flying and the art of instructing aspiring aviators. He became an active flight instructor shortly after receiving his license. “I never wanted to be anything other than a pilot,” says Freed.
When it came to opening his aviation school, he knew Coastal Delmarva was a great choice because of some unique flying advantages. “We are geographically removed from the major metropolitan areas of the Mid-Atlantic, so air traffic around here is light. The terrain is mostly farmland, distinctly flat … if we tried, we could not possibly have designed a finer region to provide primary and advanced flight traffic.” It’s why people like Chirtea, Motley, and many more in the area are not uncommon.
This area’s perfect conditions may not be a secret, though. “Ocean Aviation is an international school, so students from all over the world can train here for an aviation career,” Freed explains. Graduates go on to work for commercial airlines like Delta and United, cargo ones like FedEx and UPS, or become private pilots like Chirtea and Motley.
“Flying is a life dream and once you try it, you realize that nothing quite compares,” Freed says. “The time has never been better than today to learn to fly.” Once you do, you’ll experience your moment of Zen—as long as you don’t ignore TFRs. CS

HOW A SHOWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER AND HER STUDENTS COLLABORATED WITH KELLY SLATER TO CREATE A HOMEGROWN BOOK TO KEEP BEACHES CLEAN
Written by Kristen Hampshire
What if everyone tossed just one piece of trash on the beach— allowed a stray wrapper to blow away toward the waves or absently left behind a plastic bottle or can? Mackenzie Keyser and her second-grade class spark this dialogue in a book that was released on April 16 called, Keep Our Beaches Clean! What if Everyone Did That?
The idea swelled from a Zoom call lesson with pro-surfer and World Surf League champion Kelly Slater. “During virtual learning, it was a hard time, and I was battling with how I could still bring learning alive for my class over the computer,” says Keyser, who teaches at Showell Elementary School in Berlin.

Embarking on a biography unit, Keyser went out on a limb—actually, more like a board.
“I thought it would be amazing if I could get someone on Zoom who would be inspiring, relatable to the students, and someone I’ve looked up to my whole life,” she says.
Keyser IM’d Kelly Slater.
In a sea of more than 3 million followers as a surf world GOAT, she wasn’t expecting a reply. But her Ocean City location prompted a ping back. Slater’s mother grew up on the Eastern Shore, and he vacationed there as a kid.
Slater agreed to the Zoom biography lesson and spent two hours answering questions from every student. He even gave them a tour of his backyard surfing spots. He told lots of stories. Keyser says, the ones that

really struck students related to debris, garbage, trash, junk washed ashore and bobbing in the waters.
“He told us when he was in Indonesia surfing, there was so much trash that when he paddled, he was picking up handfuls of garbage,” Keyser relates. “The kids really couldn’t believe it.” There were times Slater wondered if he would choke on trash haphazardly tossed beachside that rushed into the surf.
After the Zoom call, the conversation continued. Keyser reached out to the Ocean City Surf Club to participate in its Adopt Your Beach initiative. She asked for 15th Street in the class’s name.
“Kids took turns on their own with their families cleaning up the beach,” Keyser says.

They logged the types of collected trash in a database. The conversation grew even more passionate. “I reached out to Kelly and said, ‘Thank you for what you did.’ He suggested we write a class book about it.”
Keyser and students collaborated, each contributing a hand-drawn illustration to bring color to a serious issue. “We read it out loud to him on Zoom, and he loved it,” Keyser says.
Slater said he wanted to publish it.
A year passed, then in winter 2023, he reached out to Keyser and told her DiAngelo Publications’ Sequoia Schmidt was on board with a fully funded project. Proceeds go to the Kelly Slater Foundation, which raises awareness and provides support for social and environmental causes. It includes a lesson plan for teachers and the publisher retained all the students’ artwork, along with adding a foreword from Slater.

Heard of Music Row? Meet Music Mile!
HOW THESE ARTISTS ARE TURNING DEWEY BEACH INTO A COASTAL NASHVILLE
Story and Photography by Alex Csedrik
Cecilia Grace is a Rehoboth Beach award-winning, nationally-touring, singer-songwriter, whose raw vocals have been compared to Alanis Morissette, Lainey Wilson, Adele and Stevie Nicks. She plays for Highway One establishments like Jimmy’s and Rusty Rudder in Dewey Beach, as well as Coastal Taproom and Dogfish Head in Rehoboth Beach, among other places. Originally from Baltimore, she immediately fell in love with the coastal vibe.
“Performing at the beach is just so much more laid back, from the sounds of the waves to the chill vibes of the people who live and vacation here. It is so relaxing to be surrounded by nature, and to take in the views while I perform at waterfront venues.”
Even when she’s not performing, she’s drawing inspiration from her surroundings. “On my days off in the summer, I love to go to the drive-on beach at Gordon’s Pond or take the boat along the back canals of Rehoboth. [My boyfriend] Ian drives the boat while I write songs or jam on my guitar, and breath in my gratitude for this little life.”
She’s even connected with other local artists, having recently written a song with Chris Diller. With her drive and talent, expect her collaboration list to grow.
Nashville’s famous Music Row is known for the sheer amount of talent that occupies a stretch of “Music City.” What if you didn’t have to fly South for a center of budding singer/songwriters though? What if you could see live music—often for free—from artists with big talent and even bigger dreams, right here at the beach?
Enter Dewey Beach riding in on its surfboard. The easily walkable town, now known as “Delaware’s Favorite Playground,” though still affectionately remembered by its erstwhile slogan “A Way of Life,” has created quite the music scene in the past several years. Here’s how these several artists are turning this 1.2-mile-long beach community into Music Mile, and why the area is integral to their art.

Chris Diller is originally from rural Maryland, but has settled in Rehoboth Beach. His chill personality coupled with his soulful songwriting make him a staple along the Mid-Atlantic coast, where he’s been a supporting act for Andy Frasco, the Bacon Brothers and Dylan Scott. His second album, Alive & Well, was released in November 2023, and boasts an alohameets-Americana sound.
“Beach bum life is, without a doubt, an influence on the type of music I write,” Chris says. “The connection with nature, the ocean and the laidback vacation vibes have found its way into my melodies and lyrics.”
On top of being a source of inspiration, the sea and its communities provide him with exciting gigs at joints like Jimmy’s in Dewey Beach, not to mention previous stints in Ocean City.
“[Playing in this area is] touring without touring. You get a different crowd every night. Dewey goers know that live music is a big part of what makes this small beach town special.”
His singing and songwriting keep making waves here at the beach.

“Performing
at the beach is just so much more laid back, from the sounds of the waves to the chill vibes of the people who live and vacation here. It is so relaxing to be surrounded by nature, and to take in the views while I perform at waterfront venues.”
Marissa Levy is a Lewes-based singer/songwriter whose deeply personal yet universally relatable music appeals to all music lovers.
She started her career while attending NYU and played with artists such as Matt Nathanson, Gavin DeGraw, Lisa Loeb and Ron Pope. She’s released four albums to date, with her most recent one, Marissa Levy is Fine, being a collaboration with singer/songwriter Cliff Hillis.
She’s driving the coastal music scene as a performer and an owner of the performing venue, The Listening Booth, in Rehoboth Beach. She finds the area has “so much talent to pull from and everyone is so excited to have new opportunities,” which has introduced her to many like-minded individuals, something that truly inspires her. “[The Coastal area] can be an ideal location to easily travel all along the Northeast corridor and play music.”
Although she predominantly focuses on original music, she’s happy to wade into the covers water. She’s one-half of a duo with a fellow musician, and they’ll play their setlist of originals and ones we all know and love all over Sussex County. One of the best parts, she says, about the coastal crowds is the excitement.
“There is a terrifically cultured audience of locals and recent transplants that are dying for something new down here,” Marissa says.
She’s helping to give them just what they want.

Matt Quinton knows the siren song of this area quite well. As a musician for over 30 years, with performances and artist-in-resident stints at iconic venues like The Bitter End in New York, The Elbo Room in Fort Lauderdale and Sloppy Joe’s & Irish Kevin’s in Key West he’s done summers in the area, ventured off, but always makes his way back.
After leaving Delaware last year, he’s back at Nalu Surf Bar in Dewey Beach, where he’s an artist-in-resident, and will play several gigs at Conch Island Key West Bar & Grill in Rehoboth, Paradise Grill & Pub in Long Neck and Seacrets in Ocean City.
“Everyone [at the beach] is in a good mood… except for the guy with the excessive road rage, sitting in traffic. He hates his day already, but even he can pull over, park somewhere, and find somebody who can play something to make him forget about that,” Quinton says.
His album, Another Key West Night , boasts beach vibes from his Key West days, themes he continues to touch on in his new songs.
“I like to write songs with characters. Sometimes, developing those characters is a chore, unless you’re writing about someone you meet in Dewey Beach,” Matt says. “The work is pretty much done for you.”
His songwriting collaborations include artists such as Kenny Chesney, Lewis Brice, Ken Alphin and beach buddy JJ Rupp, and we can’t wait to hear about some of the characters he’s recently met. CS

SPOTLIGHT ON WELL-BEING
Recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month
wellness
LIFE’S CHALLENGES CAN BE RAPID AND RELENTLESS. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ITS IMPACT ON OUR MENTAL HEALTH SHOULDN’T BE IGNORED.
This May, as communities across the Shore observe Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s an appropriate moment to reflect on the strides we’ve made in understanding mental health, address the challenges that remain, and reaffirm our commitment to fostering a society where mental well-being is a priority for all.
The Journey So Far: Breaking Down Barriers
The journey towards greater mental health awareness has been riddled with road blocks. Historically, stigma and misunderstanding have shrouded issues related to mental health, often leaving those affected feeling isolated and without support.
However, the narrative is changing. Thanks to the tireless efforts of advocates, healthcare professionals and individuals sharing their personal stories, the walls of silence are gradually coming down.
This increased visibility has led to significant progress in how we understand and treat mental health conditions. Advances in therapy, medication and holistic approaches affirm the complex nature of mental health. Public campaigns and educational programs continue to emphasize the importance of seeking help, encouraging an open dialogue about mental health that was unimaginable just a few decades ago.

Challenges Ahead: Accessibility and Inclusivity
Despite these advances, significant challenges remain. Access to mental health care continues to be a hurdle for many, particularly in underserved communities. The economic and social barriers to accessing mental health services mean that the most vulnerable often go without the support they need. Moreover, the one-size-fits-all approach is increasingly recognized as inadequate. Mental health is profoundly influenced by a myriad of factors including cultural background, socioeconomic status, and personal identity. As such, there’s a growing call for more inclusive and culturally sensitive mental health resources that acknowledge and respect these differences.

The Path Forward: Community, Connection and Compassion Mental Health Awareness Month is more than just a time to reflect on the challenges and successes in the realm of mental health. It’s a call to action. It’s an invitation for communities, organizations, and individuals to come together to break down the remaining barriers to mental health care and ensure that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, has access to the support they need.

This month, let’s commit to extending compassion to those around us, to listening without judgment and to advocating for policies and practices that prioritize mental health. Let’s celebrate the progress that’s been made, while acknowledging the work that lies ahead. A NON-PROFIT FOUNDED BY OH MY HAIR! HELPS RESTORE A SENSE OF SELF DURING FIGHTS AGAINST ILLNESS, LIKE CANCER, WITH REAL LOOKING AND FEELING WIGS
Locks are character. Hair is often a defining feature, a source of pride, a way to be “you.”
Lack of hair due to illness such as cancer makes a statement, one of vulnerability and fight. Maybe you don’t want everyone asking about your story. Or, you want to look in the mirror and not be reminded.
Kate Jacobs recalls with searing clarity the stress of figuring out how to deal with a formal work function she needed to attend with her husband. “I told myself, ‘I have to deal with it, don’t think about it,’” says the 37-year-old
Delaware mom who is a medical assistant studying to be a nurse.
About a year go, she was diagnosed with extradonal lymphoma, meaning the cancer rooted in a body organ that is not part of the lymphatic system—in Jacobs’ case, a footballsized mass in her chest. The most grueling aspect of her aggressive chemotherapy treatments were being away from her then one-year-old son for a week at a time every month.
When she quickly lost a head of naturally ginger hair that was practically waist long, she
held on to her grit and pushed through with gratitude for life. But losing hair, eyelashes and eyebrows tells a story she didn’t always want to share, even though she appreciated concern and empathy from those with names she’d never know. “It was bittersweet,” she says.
A friend, Michele Harrington, owner of Berlin-based Oh My Hair! The Salon (OMH), founded a nonprofit called Next Level Healing Hair after walking along her older sister’s journey with ovarian cancer. The sisters went wig shopping and discovered Envy Wigs in Indiana where her sister lives.

They met in the showroom, and he generously gave Harrington’s sister a comfortable, natural looking wig that was hand sewn and constructed of material that can be cut, styled and withstand blow-dryer heat. This is unlike itchy, costume type wigs that are certainly more accessible but irritating to the skin and rigid in their ability to be treated like real hair.
Then, a dear client of Harrington’s, a fourth-grade teacher who had donated her thick ponytail four times to Locks of Love, encouraged her whole class to do the same. It was a yearlong project.
Then she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. “I was trying to help her find a wig and the only option was across the bridge— and finding something was really hard,” Harrington describes of an examination room with boxes of tiny color swatches.
Harrington couldn’t believe how difficult it was for a cancer patient to restore dignity through hair.
“It’s very personal to her, and she gave me back a little bit of myself—and that meant a lot.”
This is her passion with the nonprofit she started, Next Level Healing Hair, located in a private studio upstairs from OMH, because the fittings and conversations are rarely without tears and hugs.
Harrington partners with Envy Wigs, which has a patented synthetic-human hair blend that looks and feels like the real deal. Rather than machine-sewn synthetic wigs, these are handtied. “They are light-weight and see-through so you can see the scalp, and it moves like real hair,” she explains.

Jacobs met with Harrington, who sized her head—another defining feature of these real-life hairpieces—and helped her select a color that mimicked her own locks. She first asked Jacobs whether she wanted a new look, a different color. “I decided I wanted to look close to what I had looked like before, but with shorter hair because I work in healthcare,” Jacobs relates. When the wig arrived for a fitting, Jacobs—
Harrington helps select just-right wigs, which involves measurements and custom cuts to accommodate any style. She performs any tweaks or fixes, and the relationships she builds and hope that Next Level Healing Hair offers are rewarding and inspiring.

Prioritizing self-care
Find the key to a happier and healthier you
By Stacey Walker, MSW, LCSW-C
As we enter May, designated as Mental Health Awareness Month, it's essential to recognize the profound impact of mental health on every aspect of our lives. Just as a single drop of colored dye transforms an entire glass of water, our mental well-being permeates every facet of our existence.
Defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, mental health shapes our emotions, thoughts, and relationships. It influences our selfperception, interactions with others, and our perspective on the world. The CDC emphasizes that mental health is integral to our overall well-being, highlighting the link between conditions like depression and increased risks of physical health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
Given the pervasive influence of mental health, prioritizing self-care becomes paramount. While activities like manicures, pedicures, and bubble baths are valuable

forms of self-care, true nurturing of our emotional, psychological, and social well-being requires deeper engagement. It entails investing in practices that promote resilience, balance, and fulfillment in all aspects of life.
During Mental Health Awareness Month and beyond, it's crucial to recognize that resources exist within our community to support mental well-being. From counseling services to support groups and educational workshops, these resources provide invaluable assistance in navigating the complexities of mental health and fostering a healthier, more fulfilling life.
If you find yourself in crisis, please reach out to the TidalHealth Crisis Center, where help can be found in a warm, friendly setting.
By acknowledging the importance of mental health and actively engaging in self-care practices, we can cultivate resilience and enhance our overall well-being.

June marks Men’s Health Month
Make your health a priority year-round
June is Men’s Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the critical importance of proactive healthcare for men of all ages.
Regardless of your age or health status, taking charge of your well-being is important. Why? Because early detection significantly improves outcomes, emphasizing the vital role of your primary care provider.
Establishing a relationship with a primary care provider goes beyond medical check-ups; it’s about forming a partnership aimed at addressing concerns, conducting necessary screenings, and promoting preventative care.
An annual physical appointment ensures patients remain current with essential tests and vaccinations. These routine visits focus on preventive care, offering guidance to foster a healthy and fulfilling life.
For men, screenings for conditions like prostate cancer are crucial at the appropriate age, alongside other recommended tests such as colon cancer screenings.
Similarly, routine lab work plays a pivotal role in identifying underlying medical conditions like high cholesterol, diabetes, or blood disorders, often asymptomatic in their early stages.
During these appointments, vital signs are monitored, offering insights into heart and respiratory health, blood pressure, and body mass index. Such measurements serve as early indicators of potential issues like obesity, hypertension, or cardiac and pulmonary conditions.
Vaccinations also play a pivotal role in reducing the risk of infectious diseases, especially for individuals with compromised immune systems. Collaborating with healthcare providers helps patients assess their susceptibility to these conditions and devise strategies for protection.
TidalHealth has a robust multi-specialty group of providers who are board-certified and highly experienced in family medicine and specialty care. To find a primary care physician near you, visit tidalhealth.org/schedule

Faces of the Shore
A longtime institution in Berlin for appliances from refrigerators to laundry and grills, Palmer’s Appliances opened in 1976. Current owner Chuck Brosch purchased the business in 2001. Palmer’s Appliances is what general manager Leanne Whitaker calls, “a mom-and-pop shop all in one,” as a welcoming environment with knowledgeable staff.
Sales, service and a showroom floor of a wide variety of brands, including GE, Frigidaire, Speed Queen and Whirlpool, offer customers a wide selection and venue where they can compare the options.
Palmer’s Appliances is also a licensed Speed Queen dealer offering commercial grade washing machines and dryers you can’t find in box stores. The brand’s reputation for quality and longevity attracts customers to the showroom to
experience the difference, Whitaker says. “They come with great warranties and are the best on the market when it comes to your laundry needs,” she says.
Palmer’s Appliances warranties nearly every appliance they sell, excluding a few brands. This provides peace of mind for its customers — and Palmer’s experienced, in-house installation team assures a professional and reliable experience throughout the entire process, unlike the experiences at big box stores.
Accurate measurements are a must for a successful purchase, Whitaker reminds. “We will come out and measure your kitchen for you and can tell you exactly what will suit the space and what will fit, guaranteed,” she says, relating that there’s no “standard size” refrigerator and many options from counter depth to varying heights.
Palmer’s team walks customers through the options, asking questions to gain a sense of style preferences, functional needs and space requirements.
Identifying some trending features, Whitaker says customers go for a fourth, convertible refrigerator/freezer door for storing fresh food or frozen items with top French doors and a bottomdrawer main freezer. Stainless steel still reigns supreme. Though alternatives that are gaining traction and add pop to a kitchen include matte black or white finishes in the GE Café line.
Whitaker says Palmer’s often partners with contractors who refer customers to the store to select appliances. She says, “They can equip a full kitchen from the selection in our showroom.”

For more than 114 years, Hebron Savings Bank (HSB) has been a steward of support and commitment to Eastern Shore residents and businesses as their hometown community bank. Its mission is to continue to be the premier, independent, community bank within its market area of Wicomico, Dorchester, Somerset Counties, and soon, Worcester County, thanks to HSB’s expansion into the area later this year.
Each of its 135 employees are committed to being reliable business partners and leaders in the community, supporting its customers’ financial objectives, empowering its employees and increasing shareholder values. HSB proudly
offers the in-person service and local decision making that many larger banks lack, as well as modern banking conveniences, like mobile banking and its new, online mortgage center, which features both business and personal loan products, planning tools, and direct access to its local team of lenders within its new Mortgage Division.
“We are proud to say that as of 12/31/2023, out of the 12 remaining community banks on the Delmarva Peninsula, we are the third largest in total assets and hold the highest amount of customer deposits of any bank*, large or small, in our three-county branch area of Wicomico,
Dorchester, and Somerset Counties,” said Jennifer A. Poulsen, President and Chief Executive Officer “We look forward to expanding that footprint into Worcester County this year.”
Voted Coastal Style’s Best Bank in Wicomico County for the past 8 years, HSB prides itself on its excellent customer service, longevity, remaining independent and making decisions locally. It’s especially proud of its involvement in our community’s local charities and events, both financially and through volunteerism.

Five areas of expertise, a combined 70-plus years of kitchen and bath experience and an expansive 9,600 square-foot showroom with 25 kitchen displays provide an allencompassing selections experience at Delmarva Design Center in Selbyville.
“It’s a must-see,” says manager Bill Gorsuch, relating that the design center is a culmination of cabinetry, appliances, countertops, tile, flooring and consultation under one roof. In addition, the center includes a warehouse stocked with over 300 slabs of quartz and natural stone so guests can choose surfaces on site.
The Delmarva Design Center team knows the range of options can be overwhelming. So, with specialists in each department, clients get expert advice throughout the kitchen and bath selection process, along with learning about traditional and on-trend design features to update existing spaces or for new construction projects.
“Our kitchen displays are designed by professionals and each showcases appliances, backsplashes, unique countertops and cabinets with different finishes and door styles and configurations,” Gorsuch says.
The center was intentionally designed to
guide guests through the process, inspire creativity and show exactly how products function in more than two dozen example kitchen spaces.
“At Delmarva Design Center, we are happy to collaborate with your designer, builder or remodeling contractor. Or, if you need one, we can refer you to one of our reputable partners to assist you on your project,” Gorsuch says.
The center is a destination location and a single stop for all things kitchen and bath where “Great designs begin with great inspiration.”

The Face of Uncompromising Levels of Integrity Coastal Comfort Heating & Air Conditioning
Lacey Coleman is somewhat of an anomaly in the HVAC world. Rarely do you find women-owned businesses in this industry, and often at conferences and national seminars, other attendees think she is attending as a spouse.
But Coleman owns it.
And she is proud of the family-owned business she guided into growth mode during the last decade, after taking over ownership from her father, Kevin Coleman Sr., who founded Coastal Comfort Heating & Air Conditioning in 2005.
Coleman learned the business and HVAC industry alongside her dad, and after earning a business degree, returned to Coastal Comfort. “I love the industry and I learned it from the ground up,” she relates.
Coastal Comfort aligns with vendors that share its values of professionalism, service and support, outperformance and evolution. As the company’s values state: “We are not born to be stagnant.” So, it partners with manufacturers who operate the same way.
Those include Carrier, which has recognized Coastal Comfort with its President’s Award for six consecutive years. The business is one of Carrier’s largest dealers and installers on the Eastern Shore. All jobs are completed by a team of certified, factory-trained technicians and backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Versatile ductless systems are gaining traction and accommodate a wide range of heating and cooling scenarios, Coleman adds. Outbuildings and pool houses benefit from the single-zone setup, as do whole homes and offices, allowing for individual room temperature control. Ductless is also beneficial in bonus spaces like walk-up attics, home additions, garages and in homes that lack crawl space for ductwork.
“We can do a whole home, multiple floors, a single room—it’s flexible, efficient and quiet,” Coleman says, noting that Coastal Comfort is an Elite Mitsubishi Diamond Dealer.
Across the board, Coastal Comfort introduces energysaving innovations such as multi-stage air filtration and userfriendly programming with remote access through an app on your smart device or computer.
Coleman says, “We’ve grown the operation and serve a large area across the Lower Shore with more than 40 employees working every single day to meet the demands of our customers to make sure they are supported during and after installation.”

“When you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life,” says Dave Laubach, owner of Window Savvy in Berlin, sharing an adage that guides the culture and client experience. “We are passionate about what we do and enjoy working with our customers to help them create spaces they love!”
Window Savvy is an independent window covering company specializing in blinds, shades, shutters and soft furnishings. Since 2005, the design-driven provider has been creating custom spaces that reflect the character of clients while delivering functional solutions. Offering a wide selection of colors, styles,
designs and brands allows Window Savvy to tailor designs that suit any budget, Laubach adds. Some lines include Norman Window Fashions, Hunter Douglas, Alta, Graber and Horizons.
Window Savvy’s interior designers provide in-home or in-office consultations—the company serves residences along the Eastern Shore, along with cruise ships, schools and universities, hotels, restaurants, yachts, retailers, healthcare facilities and other commercial sites.
Laubach recommends visiting their showroom to gain inspiration, where designers also meet one-on-one with clients to assist with selections
and review samples of actual treatments.
Designers coordinate product samples that suit clients’ style, budget, room layout and décor, explaining all available options. Window Savvy measures each window to guarantee a perfect fit and arranges for convenient installation.
Laubach says one of the best parts of living and working on the Eastern Shore is the way this region simply makes people happy. “The Shore always cheers people up, whether you live here or come for summer fun,” he relates. “So, when we meet with customers down here, it’s always jovial and fun, as well as productive.”

THE STORY OF A LIFELONG PASSION FOR THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND DREAM
TO CREATE A COMPOUND COMES TO LIFE IN THE DESIGN OF A COUNTRY ESTATE
For the better part of two decades, David Williams would page through a library of architecture books he estimates has grown to roughly 200 titles, punctuating their pages with post-its to mark finishes, floor plans— detail upon detail that would one day culminate into a dream compound, a passion project.
Having grown up visiting his grandfather’s art and frame shop in New York City, Williams has an innate appreciation for curated beauty and most especially the built environment. Form, function and utility
were at the forefront of his vision.
Williams doted over ideas for what seems like a lifetime.
Pencil sketches, clippings, binders of notes and of course, the books, gradually advanced to a 152-acre property nestled along the tributary banks of Maryland’s Chester River. To realize the vision, Williams enlisted in Annapolis-based Cathy Purple Cherry and her eponymous firm Purple Cherry Architecture & Interiors.
She was introduced to Williams by builder Mark Koski of GYC Group in Westminster, MD, who led the construction of a 24,000

square foot main home, guest house and seven outbuildings amounting to 44,000 square feet of purely practical space. Kevin Campion of Campion Hruby Landscape Architects in Annapolis along with Koski, Purple Cherry and the Williams embarked on a fiveyear immersive project.
The Design of a Country Estate by Purple Cherry tells the inspirational story and explains the thought processes behind every decision, from materials selections to the location of each building for
walkability and use.
Purple Cherry describes the volleying of ideas, exchange of plans and continuous dialogue that made for a truly special partnership and, ultimately, friendship. The comprehensive project took into account every nuance for its visual impact and utility, she says.
Williams adds, “The defining feature of the farm is the compound nature of the property itself. I built it to host family, friends and business colleagues and to allow them to enjoy each other.”

A Walkable Estate
Location became a frequent discussion throughout the project, from placing buildings to positioning the main home to capitalize on riverfront views. The vista from every window was considered. Importantly, Purple Cherry says the compound is “a walkable estate.”
“On large-land properties, it’s not unusual for the thought process to be, ‘I’ll put this building here and this one way over there,’” she says. “It’s not likely you’ll jump in your car or Gator, even if it’s a quarter mile, and you’re also not likely to walk. If you’re using a structure every day or so and it’s not walkable, you’ll eventually abandon it.”
The campus is configured with appropriate building adjacencies and Williams’ desired symmetrical design.
Williams says, “Some of the most difficult decisions related to the layout of the compound. How far the barn should be from the garage? How far should the garage be from the house? I also spent a lot of time focusing on the proportions of the structures themselves. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a beautiful home and focused on it at length to understand what truly made it beautiful, and then came to understand that it was because of the correct proportions.”
Regarding symmetry, Purple Cherry, who calls herself a three-dimensional thinker, says there’s a happy balance of offset positioning and congruity. “We used our software to make finer determinations about where certain pieces would be,” she says, likening the layout to an architectural puzzle. Move one space left, shift 40 feet right and so on.
The real shift was vertical. The horseshoeshaped property on the water offers a 195-degree view, a complete capture. Rather than vexing over how to place the home closer to the bank, the challenge to solve was how to literally elevate the home’s views.

“We brought in 4 to 5 feet of dirt to lift the site,” Purple Cherry says of creating a knoll on which the estate would sit to overlook the land and water beyond it. No wonder the grounds ended up with a pond, too. (Less hauling of dirt from off-property.)
She adds, “This was probably the biggest integration with landscape architecture of any project I had worked on at that point. It was a big lift. Landscaping, period, really makes a home.”
Thoughtful Scale, Well-Planned Proportion The main house despite its size—including five kitchens counting the service cooking area in the entertaining barn and 10 ensuite bathrooms—is just 30 percent of the compound. A priority during design was to create a sense of intimacy within individual spaces and the property’s structures.
“I’ve been told by many people who have visited, no space feels too big,” says Purple Cherry, crediting extensive rich millwork and texture, movement and scale, to how its volume is “humanized.”
“And when you bring in artwork and accessories with paneled walls, that’s the final touch,” she adds.

TRANSFORMATION COMPLETE
A house becomes a home once it’s filled with objects beyond furniture, according to Purple Cherry, who along with the Williams, made multiple visits to High Point, NC, to source pieces.
The greatest achievement, Williams says, is the way the home and surrounding structures link family, guests and groups. “The most gratifying aspect of this project is that our children love it,” he relates. “I built it as a multigenerational asset, and to see my children invite their friends to join them at the farm and to host family is incredibly rewarding.”
In fact, Williams had been collecting artifacts and pieces during travels and trips to antique shops and purveyors. Sometimes, the Williams and Purple Cherry would scour venues together, discovering just the right pieces to fill the home. “It was that kind of special client relationship,” she says. “It was also not unusual for him to send a picture or stop in and ask, ‘Where do you think we can use this?’
Trips to High Point Market in High Point, NC, to treasure hunt produced characteristic finds tucked throughout the home. No shelf, surface or space is without thoughtful presentation. “A house is not a home until it is filled with objects beyond furniture,” Purple Cherry says.
Within two weeks of completion, thanks to double-digit years of collecting, the home and buildings were handsomely and most comfortably staged—for real living. Again, utility was paramount. The main residence includes a designated entertaining level, and the barn serves as a multi-use sports court.
The greatest achievement, Williams says, is the way the home and surrounding structures link family, guests and groups.
“The most gratifying aspect of this project is that our children love it,” he relates. “I built it as a multigenerational asset for my family, and to see my children invite their friends to join them at the farm, along with hosting friends, family and colleagues, is incredibly rewarding.” CS

WITH CHRISTOPHER PATTEY I BECKER MORGAN GROUP
NO
NEED
TO
FEEL OVERWHELMED.
EXPERIENCED ARCHITECTS
AND DESIGNERS CAN GUIDE THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS DURING CUSTOM HOME CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION.
Decisions, decisions—so many of them to navigate during home construction or renovation. Making the decision to do the project in the first place and engage in a custom architect and designer is just the beginning.
Type “coastal architecture” into Google “and your head will spin,” relates Christopher L. Pattey, Assoc. AIA, of Becker Morgan Group in Salisbury. But he always encourages this search, noting that offering a professional a plethora of preferences allows an architect to cull down the options by identifying common threads and themes. Showing inspo pictures rather than describing
what you like and what’s a no-thank-you can be a more effective way to launch a discussion. “These jumping off points are one aspect—and then we focus on practical considerations,” Pattey says, explaining that design decisions are lifestyle-driven.
“My approach to the best overall design ethos is to conceive the entire project as a master plan for continuity,” Pattey says.
Specifically, site-specific designs require planning the layout and orientation of a home, including outdoor living spaces and site amenities. Furniture should be curated to align with the flow of a floorplan, he says.
THE RIGHT ARCHITECT: MY THREE “R’s”
When selecting a custom builder and architect, Christopher Pattey, a Worcester County native with more than 35 years of architectural experience, says he relies on the “3 Rs” — referrals, repeats and reputation.
REFERRALS
Talk to homeowners who have enlisted in the builder you’re considering. Tour homes various builders have constructed.
“See their work in person—their craftsmanship,” Pattey advises. “Talk to their customers, and meet custom architects in person because this is a marriage for a period of time. You have to be as happy with the personality as with the quality and price—it’s a tripod.”
REPEATS
When an architect and a custom builder wins repeat business from clients, this loyalty signals a trusting relationship and appreciation of a job well done.
REPUTATION
Years of experience is important for large-scale custom home design projects. So is your architect and builder’s understanding of the community and environment where you are choosing to develop a home. Pattey also emphasizes, “Architecture and interior design are integral and should be cohesive.” The most successful projects involve an aligned team from conception to final walk-through—and beyond.

“Through careful coaching, designers can steer the way through the endless possibilities,” Pattey assures. Here, he offers a practical approach for well-planned, thoughtful selections.
All In or Hands Off?
How involved do you want to be in the process?
Do you have time to devote to making every decision, overseeing every detail? Most do not.
“Some people want a hybrid approach where they want to make some selections on their own and rely on a qualified custom builder who understands their vision to take it from there,” Pattey says.
Flexibility is important. Go with a builder/ architect who will accommodate as much or as little of your involvement as you choose. There are many ways to approach interiors selections, all at the owner’s comfort level, he emphasizes.
“The design process starts with discussing their desires, expectations and the design budget for fees and products,” Pattey says.
Some questions Pattey asks:
• Do you wish to make your own selections?
• Do you want a builder’s selections professional to work with you to perform these tasks as part of the design-build process?
• Do you want the architect to suggest finishes or serve as a sounding board?
• Will you hire an independent interior design consultant as part of a design-build team?
• Will you bring existing furniture that must be incorporated into the new design?
Ins and Outs
Often, selections start with a theme, color or material the client deems as a must-have. “Is the style eclectic? Do they prefer blues or greens? Do they lean toward modern or traditional styles?” Pattey relates.
“Design is so very personal, and the designer must ‘get’ their clients so that their personality is captured,” Pattey adds, explaining that he avoids contrived looks such as a matchy-matchy furniture set that looks as if it were transplanted from a showroom.
“Eclecticism usually has the best feel when done well and not hodge-podge,” he adds. “Timeless with a twist vs. super trendy always gets my vote. But, let’s face it, styles do have popularity based on current and evolving trends, and after all, the homeowner should be happy.”

PERSPECTIVES
78 CoastalStyleMag.com • May/June 2024 PARTNERED CONTENT
Oftentimes, there is a disconnect between the price tag on inspirational photos pulled from Pinterest and the actual budget.
“With the barrage of resources, we help narrow down selections to help identify what will suit the environment, their lifestyle, aesthetic and budget,” Pattey says.
Pattey scrolls through some main decision-making points and offers this insight for guiding the process.
Exterior: Consider aesthetics, the environment—exposure to the elements—the style of surrounding homes and maintenance.
“We educate clients on longevity, new products and performance based on our experience,” Pattey says. For instance, Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) ages and resists rotting, along with being bug resistant. PVC materials also stand up to tough environments, even though I tend to be a purist.
Interior: Environment is important for interior selections, too. For instance, in high-humidity locations, wide plank flooring can “cup” and an engineered floor with a stable substrate will not bow, Pattey explains.
As for surfaces such as countertops, functionality is just as important as aesthetics, Pattey says. “If you want a marble look in a high-traffic kitchen, quartzite is more durable and can mimic the look and quartz, which is man-made, offers consistent veining at varied price points for all budgets.”
For some, the kitchen is a showplace. For others, it’s a mess hall.
“You have to think about who is going to use the space,” Pattey says. This recommendation applies to every room in a home.
Color can be an overwhelming decision. “Start with something you really love in a room—something that speaks to you that will spin off decision-making,” Pattey advises. “A personal inspiration item, a unique piece of tile or artwork.”
Finally, a word on going with your gut.
“Custom unique homes should not fit the mold of a boring beige flip for the next buyer,” Pattey says. Though, if neutral is your preference, “Don’t hesitate,” he adds. “Also, don’t be afraid to explore possibilities.”
Most of all, “Design for yourself, not in anticipation of what someone else would want,” Pattey advises. “Bringing joy to your life is what matters. It’s where your family experiences life!” CS

A GLASS-AND-STONE RETREAT WITH PANORAMIC VIEWS INSPIRES AN INNOVATIVE, ARTISAN OVERHAUL TO SUIT MODERN FAMILY LIVING
It’s a construction marvel,” says Robb Merritt of the Magothy Riverfront contemporary his father built in 1986. The ironclad glass-and-stone industrial residence supersedes gale-wind standards by every measure, with high-integrity cantilevers fully intact after 40 years and not a crack in the stone foundation.
Then there’s the grandfathered setback—a marvel in itself.
Built before ratcheted-up environmental building restrictions requiring about 100 feet of beachfront leeway, the property perches on the water’s edge, sitting on what feels like its own island.
The Merritts listed the home for some time after his father’s passing. “But after years, I thought, ‘What are we doing? You cannot recreate this property.”
Robb grew up on the water boating—helm is home. Meanwhile, amid career and life, he and his wife Sheila had moved to a condo in Baltimore with a wood-iron-copper-linear aesthetic they’d grown to appreciate in a big way. After spending more time in the Pasadena waterfront outpost, they decided to go all in.
They would, after all, recreate the property. This required embracing its mortar shell as a foundation for a completely reimagined Eastern Shore family retreat.
Locust Grove Studios’ Joe Karlik and crew guided the 10,000-square-foot artisan overhaul with a team of craftspeople, including Delbert Adams Construction Group, Blacksmith Sawyer Co. and Vicco von Voss, a talented woodmaster. Initially, Karlik describes the property as “walking back into a time warp” with marble throughout and a hot tub adjacent to the living room. There was a grand piano and retro-wall televisions. There were materials like Formica in a slim kitchen and upholstered walls with cushions in some bedrooms.

coastal HOME
“But the property and structure is amazing, and it’s an icon on the river—a destination point,” Karlik says, immediately drawn to its potential.
So, it began. The Merritts gave the team full creative license, taking a hands-off approach. Their primary goal was to preserve its bones while inviting comfortable living spaces to the plan.
A Cohesive Conversation. With original exterior cantilevers fully intact, a balcony for every room and panoramic views, Karlik describes the home as “very porous—just glass and concrete,” and connected to its surroundings.
The home’s cohesive nature is captured through a dynamic play with interior/exterior materials. Stone, white oak, sycamore, steel, brass—there is “no faux anything”—present a sort of conversation in design, which is intentional. Sitting down with the family, they expressed a want for the “whole house to feel together,” Karlik says. “I created a vocabulary of materials and shuffled them in different ways based on how rooms functioned.”
An exterior transformation took the home from light gray to a darker iron, clad with bluestone and resilient Ipe siding. Texture from careful materials selections adds movement and interest to an otherwise monochromatic backdrop inside.
WARM WELCOME
Creating inviting, comfortable spaces was a priority for the Merritts, accented by textures, colors and an abundance of natural light.

WAYFINDING TREATMENT
A substantial stairwell is adorned with handblown fixtures, each 3-feet in size and suspended at varying lengths that guide the way.
A Collective Welcome. The original firstfloor entrance to a grand staircase that scaled three levels fell flat of purpose other than a way to travel up. Dead space was repurposed to showcase an impressive wine collection with backlit onyx positioned behind glass shelves illuminating the room. “These glowing walls give a warm, amber glow to the space,” Karlik relates, noting a peekaboo effect from the second floor, which captures the view.
Meanwhile, the mammoth stairwell lacked lighting, a void addressed with handblown fixtures, each 3-feet in size and suspended at varying lengths as a stunning wayfinding treatment to guide the way. “The lighting connects the first floor to the top, and as you walk up, you keep running into these beautiful fixtures,” Karlik describes.
Shiny stainless-steel balusters and handrails were chemically blackened. As they could not be removed, the team took on a painstaking process of painting them in place.

Culinary Innovation. An avid home-chef, Robb wanted a true kitchen on the main level, which housed more of a basic galley with no real intent for preparing meals.
The home included an auxiliary pool-level kitchen that he described as “cramped” and was expanded.
Plans called for reassigning the former hot tub living area to a kitchen role, “but the problem with this location is the ceilings are 16-and-20-feet-tall and it’s hard to make that intimate,” Karlik relates.
Cantilevered structures “bring the space more into a human scale” while playing off the exterior’s structural elements.
The other challenge: a complete glass surround. “Well, that doesn’t give you any storage,” Kralik quips.
Problem solved with an innovative pantry that operates like library stacks and folds into the wall. “With one hand, you can grab a section of the wall and slide it open to find glassware and dishes, and we included every bell and whistle,” Karlik says, noting its convenient position next to the dishwasher.
Countertops are 3-inch-thick concrete with a crisp waterfall edge complemented by a bartop fashioned from a 5-foot caliper sycamore tree sourced from Eastern Maryland by Vicco von Vass. He built a dining table from the same specimen, along with a number of furniture pieces throughout the home.
A concrete backsplash rises from counter to ceiling. Brass accents draw from the same materials in light fixtures. Existing, rounded support pillars were cloaked white oak with brass corners and copper banding that mimics the window mullions.
Some marble flooring stayed; much of it was replaced with warmer white oak.
Adjacent is a custom whiskey and wine bar that houses a collection. A wood top slides open and protects whiskeys from harsh sunlight, which can be muted with electronic Lutron shades throughout the home.

Suite Comfort. Again, playing with scale, 16foot ceilings in the third-floor master and guest suites were outfitted with cantilevers that invite a cohesive form and warming function to the spaces. Televisions are concealed and lower from the ceiling with a push of a button, while black-out shades also draw to provide an ideal viewing environment. Another personal touch Sheila appreciates is custom displays throughout for plants, particularly orchids.
Connected, Intentionally. In keeping with the vocabulary of materials Karlik introduced, all bathrooms seamlessly speak the same language.
Black concrete vanities with a leathery texture in the main suites complement large-format tile in slate with white pine throughout. In the master, a black cast-concrete tub with views is a sanctuary. Another inventive solution: Custom brackets holding a wall-mounted TV that opens with a simple touch.
The pool-level bathroom stands out among the rest. “I didn’t want it to look exactly like the others,” Karlik says, enlisting von Vass to create a walnut vanity with a rippling surface that spills over the sides to the floor.
He says, “My dad was so proud of that house, and he was very happy when he was there, so it made my wife and I feel good inside that it is still part of this family.”
“They gave me such a runway and such trust, and our whole team worked to balance every detail,” Karlik says of a veritable design/build symphony with exceedingly talented artisans and vendors on board to complete the three-year project. “This was a bucket list job—an opportunity to reinvent a structure of this scale.” CS
The project is truly one-of-a-kind, delivering on the Merritts’ hope to create a home for generations to come.

Sophistication at Seagrove Beach
DESIGNER LAURA HAMILTON LEVERAGED
ARTISTIC LICENSE AND TRADED OUT TYPICAL
COASTAL TREATMENTS TO CREATE AN ELEGANT YET APPROACHABLE BEACHFRONT RETREAT
Laura Hamilton started staging beachfront properties for Realtors to elevate their presence on the market About seven years ago, the service grew into what she calls personal design, mainly in the Northwest Florida Panhandle, near her home base in Santa Rosa Beach.
While Architectural Digest was on site to feature a home in Seagrove Beach—known for its laid-back luxury and white sugar sand—the home next door was under construction. Ultimately, that in-progress property evolved into a statement of its own. However, inside it was a mashup of materials and finishes, borrowed as extras from the builder’s previous projects. “It was a very random combination, very pieced together,” says Hamilton, president, The L. Hamilton & Co. team.

Upon completion, the home became a rental for some time. Then Hamilton’s client purchased the property and embarked on a full-on renovation.
Vertically Inclined. To say the home is fully equipped is an understatement. The entry opens into an expansive foyer and includes an elevator for access to the upper two floors. Also at ground level is laundry space, a bunk room for guests, bedroom and powder bath. Next up is the main living space with a kitchen, butler’s pantry, dining spaces—including a coastal cozy nook—and primary suite. Up top are three additional bedrooms, plus a dedicated Peloton area and wet bar, because who doesn’t want to kick back after a workout? Including the carriage house, there are eight bedrooms, eight bathrooms plus two powder rooms. The main home’s footprint is 5,724 square feet with stunning waterfront views.
DETAIL ORIENTED
Attention-grabbing textures and thoughtful design choices combine to create a coastal-casual setting.
Room for a View. The main living level felt choppy despite having the necessary spaces: kitchen, butler’s pantry, dining area and access to the outdoors. Hamilton opened up the kitchen, adding windows to reveal water views and creating a true dining nook. Rather than allowing the pantry to open up to the dining room, this space was closed off. The result is a seamless footprint for cooking, entertaining and relaxing with a functional butler’s pantry that hides appliances and supplies.

Picking Prints. “Rentals get hit hard,”
Hamilton says of use and, well, sometimes abuse. But with owners selecting materials, finishes and décor, they could choose fine pieces without concern of how they’d be treated. “Also, they could put their thumbprint on the home without feeling like it had to be a ‘beachy-coastal rental house,’” she relates.
“We didn’t use navy,” Hamilton says, pausing momentarily. “Maybe a touch.”
Instead, Hamilton says the client handed over the helm to “have fun with prints.”
A wallpapered ceiling in narrow bunk spaces adds whimsy. A sitting space with a sophisticated ivory settee won a mural backdrop of whisky dune perennials—a print called Kanji on Sisal by Schumacher.
However, every wall could not be papered, regardless of how painterly the pattern. In the primary, mushroom-colored walls with picture-frame grid detail—like coffered ceilings for walls—adds depth without noise.
UPSCALE YET APPROACHABLE
At the direction of the clients, Hamilton designed spaces that exude purpose and comfortability.
Overboard with Shiplap. Except for white oak floors and simple ceilings, barely a wall escaped shiplap treatment prior to the renovation. Hamilton changed the tune and warmed the look with pecky cypress ceilings in spaces such as the main living space, foyer and dining room.
“The pitted look has a calm feel to it— it’s more organic,” she relates.
Relaxed Living. While selections throughout the home are decidedly upscale, the aesthetic is approachable, casual and purposeful. Hamilton selected outdoor tables by Palecek for the living room to accommodate the client’s request for “a relaxing space, not stuffy.” Hamilton designed a 100-inch floating media piece that was custom fabricated. “The reason we wanted it to be floating is because the space is small, so it gives an illusion that the space is much bigger instead of having a heavy piece of furniture on the floor,” she explains.

Carry On, Carriage House. Ideal for guests or a spot to steal away, the carriage house includes the property’s eighth bedroom and jack-and-jill ensuite that opens on the opposing side to a living area with a convenient serving station. This aspect of the extensive renovation was an add-on request, Hamilton says, relating that the relationship fostered between her client and team was, perhaps, the most rewarding outcome of this project and reason they continued widening the scope. Hamilton says, “We pretty much had free reign.” CS

Arush of warm sunlight and peaceful gurgle of a koi pond fill the Lakeside Pottery ceramic studio when owners Morty Bachar and Patty Storms open the full-length glass doors to let the outdoors in. Their L-shaped home in Lewes, Del., was designed around the water feature and gardens.
Studio space flows into a courtyard and garden rooms connected by meandering paths provide distinct spaces for growing organic vegetables, sketching in the shade, and watching wildlife amid lush container plantings.
“A huge reason for us to have the environment we do outside is it brings the outside in, and that influences us tremendously,” says Storms, a ceramic artist and painter who practices sgraffito, an Italian word for scratch and ancient technique where colored surface on clay is etched away to produce a design. “Most of my work is about animals and nature,” she relates.
Bachar is focused on restoration at this point, namely the Japanese art of Kintsugi: putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold. The practice is based on the idea of embracing imperfection to create stronger, more compelling results.

When the couple shifted gears from teaching and found the Lewes property, it was an opportunity to create an inspirational setting that gives back with plants that attract life. Since, their art-by-nature creation has garnered interest from institutions such as The Smithsonian, which released a podcast about otters visiting the koi pond on site, and receiving an award as a Lewes in Bloom Beauty Spot A, not to mention garden tours.
The couple, both artists with three operating studios at home, prioritized their gardens as inspirational views and hands-on exhibits in their own right.
First, the pond. “When we were working with the architect, we wanted to have a heartbeat to the outside and it’s a magnificent fishpond with waterfalls,” Bachar says.
With 38 inches of water, fish can deep dive to protect against natural predators like herons. Yet there’s a shallow area where birds can bathe.
“It’s very peaceful,” Bachar says. At the same time, it’s also high-tech. A special selfcleaning filter keeps water clear, “and we really have to do nothing,” he says, noting this is the third pond he and Storms have managed. The German-made mechanical filter mimics nature.
Garden rooms. A series of garden rooms bring a sense of wonder to the property. “I always envision what my grandchildren would want to see — ‘Let’s go into this area now, let’s explore over here, and let’s sneak into the woods over there,’ — so there is always an adventure, depending on which room you choose,” Storms relates.

Naturally responsible. Behind the home is wooded area with a canal that cuts through the marsh. “It was important for us to create a bubble in this environment,” Bachar says. “Everyone sprays for mosquitoes and that also kills butterflies, and we didn’t want to do that.”
In fact, the couple selected plants that attract pollinators like bees. Turtles, snakes, otters, bugs of all sorts and even the raccoons are all welcome. Though they did establish pond edges that deter “friends” from entering and bothering the koi.
Ultimately, Bachar and Storms want their property to be a diverse ecosystem. When choosing plants, they ask: Who will it help?
“There is so much development and areas being plowed over,” Storms says. “Part of this garden, too, is to educate that you can plant even a small group of flowers or the right kind of tree and start attracting the wildlife back and providing for them in a way that hasn’t happened in a very long time. And if everyone did just a little bit…”
Functional finishes. The vegetable garden sitting area is constructed from woodwork that provides spaces for sitting and housing container plants. “The woodwork is beautiful,” Bachar says, alluding to the level of detail that the couple bring to their outdoor pursuits.
Growing a bounty. A dedicated raised-bed garden section of the property is gated off and includes drip irrigation. A quaint seating area provides a spot to rest or simply soak in the scents and scenes.
As with the garden, other beds contain at least 12 inches of composted soil. “That way if we move plants around, which we do all the time, it’s easy,” Bachar says of giving plants a healthy start. “People come here and they can’t believe we’ve been here for six years. But plants matured so fast because of the rich soil.”
Perpetual motion. Storms stumbled upon a concept called perpetual journaling, originated by botanical artist Lara Call Gastinger to document the natural world through the seasons and over the course of many years. “You separate a journal into weeks and make an entry of something you found or saw that is growing—I sketch and paint a little bit,” she describes. “Each year, you go back to that same week so on one page, you’ll have all these different entries from previous years.”
“You’ll notice how plants might be blooming earlier than they were three years ago,” Storms relates. “Its’ a way to see how our garden changes over the years.” CS

Easton is no longer being overlooked in the region’s culinary scene because one chef is receiving the highest industry praise for his progressive cuisine with a concentration on sustainable sourcing, especially of seafood. Harley Peet, Executive Chef of the fine dining restaurant Bas Rouge, is the first chef on the Eastern Shore of Maryland to be named a Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic Finalist by the James Beard Awards Foundation. Peet, a CIA graduate, moved from his hometown of Michigan to become a longtime resident of the Eastern Shore due to his love of the seas and as an experienced waterman from a young age.
“It’s an honor to be recognized as a finalist by the esteemed James Beard Foundation for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic amongst the four other chefs in this category who I know to be incredibly talented,” shares Peet. “Our hard work and commitment to the purity of food is validated by this recognition. This is a true testament to our team’s dedication to presenting the purest of ingredients in the most elegant of ways. What we’ve built here at the Bas Rouge restaurant could only be accomplished because of everyone who has supported us along the way and dined with us. We are excited for what’s to come.”
DELECTABLE DINING

“This is a true testament to our team’s dedication to presenting the purest of ingredients in the most elegant of ways.”
At Bas Rouge, Peet takes what is ingrained in him and what he has learned to marry the daily choices—sourcing from the most fertile, local soils and waters—with rare, imported delicacies, reinterpreting classics from European cultures. The cuisine of Peet and his team pushes culinary boundaries, and after eight years, this “jewel box” of a restaurant, is finally getting its due recognition.
Since opening in 2016, Peet has led the culinary industry in sustainable sourcing and utilizing heritage ingredients from around the world. Dishes like Fonio and Date Tabbouleh, showcasing the ancient African grain, Fonio, or the Wild Shrimp with Cucumber & Jalapeño Salad, tell a purposeful story that follows the passionate journey of Peet and the Bas Rouge team. Peet ensures responsible sourcing commitments through his longtime purveyors, relationships that have helped create significant change in how people dine in Easton today. He finds particular satisfaction when one of his long-standing purveyors arrives with a cooler of fresh fish from the Chesapeake Bay, especially the invasive Blue Catfish species, which helps control the threat to the local ecosystem.
An advocate for sustainability, Peet’s passion extends far beyond professional interest—it’s a way of life. Peet and his husband have lived and worked on their own organic farm for several years. In his limited spare time, Peet fits in a race or two with his modest sailboat in local regattas and continues as a serious fisherman, bringing that same dedication to the kitchen. He spent months in Europe, learning about international marine sourcing, while witnessing the impacts of overfishing rocked his conscience, awakening Peet to consider his own role in promoting eco-friendly practices. As the warm weather returns to greet us, so, too, does our palate for bright, light, tasty cocktails. We have much to choose from, but I want to bring us back to the fundamentals. Executing the simple with masterful precision is the hallmark of any craft. In the case of cocktails, it is the difference between good and great. So, with that, let’s explore three delicious, yet simple, recipes that you can easily make at home and enjoy on a sun-kissed afternoon.
What tools will I need? You can find most bar tools at a local kitchen supply store. But, if you want statement pieces, I recommend purchasing professional bar hardware from an online supplier, such as Cocktail Kingdom. The price tag is slightly higher, but the quality is unmatched. Take my advice, you will not be disappointed.
For our recipes here, these are the tools to look for:
• Set of mixing tins
• Double-sided jigger — 1oz/2oz
• Hawthorn strainer
• Barspoon
• Paring knife

Blackberry Margarita
There are a wide variety of fruit liqueurs available to utilize here. My favorites are blackberry, cassis and strawberry. Don’t be afraid to venture into something different; My brand recommendation is Giffard. They source their fruit from a select few of the best farms in Europe, so you’ll end up with a flavor much richer than the berries you are likely to get from your local grocery store produce. You will note that I served this cocktail up, which is the traditional presentation. If you haven’t tried it, try it. Cocktails served up do not dilute, so they retain their initial flavor profile for as long as they stay cold — which isn’t long. More reason to sip gratuitously or enjoy it on the rocks. Your choice!
Daiquiri
This cocktail is a great exercise in preference. Albeit simple, there are virtually limitless variations based on the rum you like most. Don’t be afraid to experiment. My suggestion: If you choose dry rum, use a touch more sugar; if you use aged rum, try sticking with ½ oz of sugar. This will ensure the subtleties of the spirit can still shine through the acid from the lime juice. In this recipe, I am using Diplomatico Reserva, a wonderfully aged rum that punches way above its weight in value and quality. Speaking of which, use fresh limes! You will thank me later. Enjoy!
Ingredients
2 oz dry or aged rum
¾ oz fresh lime juice
½ oz simple syrup
Instructions
No blender needed — this is not Applebee’s. Combine all ingredients in a shaker tin. Shake with vigor for 8-12 seconds. Strain into a chilled Nick & Nora glass or a martini glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.
Ingredients
2 oz tequila
½ oz blackberry liqueur
½ oz Cointreau
¾ oz fresh lime juice
¼ tsp agave nectar
Instructions
It’s time to give that margarita mix the home it deserves — in the drain. RIP. Combine all ingredients in a shaker tin. Shake with vigor for 8 to 12 seconds. Strain into a Nick & Nora glass or martini glass. Garnish with a Kosher salt rim, lime wedge and additional fruit of your liking.

The Americano is a precursor to the gin-based cocktail we all know, the Negroni. In this instance, we cut the gin and “stretch” the cocktail with club soda, making this a low-ABV alternative to other drinks. The result is an ever so slightly bittersweet concoction that will serve you well before that BBQ you’re cooking up for friends. Don’t skimp on the vermouth — buy premium. Brands such as Carpano Antica Formula and Cocchi Vermouth di Torino are lovely expressions that I use religiously.
Ingredients
1 oz sweet vermouth
1 oz Campari
Club soda
Instructions
In a highball glass with ice, combine the vermouth and Campari. Top with club soda and garnish with an orange twist. CS

Three’s A Charm
CLASSIC COCKTAILS INSPIRED BY HORSE RACING’S ICONIC TRIFECTA THE TRIPLE CROWN
History is made in less than three minutes each May and June as horse racing’s fastest Thoroughbreds gallop for glory in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes — collectively known as The Triple Crown of the sport. Since 1875, just 13 horses have claimed the illustrious honor of winning all three races consecutively, including War Admiral, who called Glen Riddle Farm in Berlin its home. These famous races are not only known for their prestige, but its classic cocktails have become synonymous with each event. Blending the historical aspects of each race with their celebratory cocktails is a time-honored tradition. Each drink not only adds to the festive atmosphere of its respective race, but has helped to enrich the cultural dynamic of the iconic sporting events.

Mint Julep
KENTUCKY DERBY I CHURCHILL DOWNS
LOUISVILLE, KY | MAY 4
Created by Louisville’s Tom Bullock, the first African-American author of a cocktail book, The Ideal Bartender in 1917, the Mint Julep skyrocketed in popularity after the end of Prohibition and became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1938. Since then, it’s become as synonymous with the Derby and Churchill Downs.
Ingredients
¼ oz simple syrup
8 fresh mint leaves
2 oz bourbon
1 fresh mint sprig, for garnish
Instructions
In a Julep cup, lightly muddle the syrup and mint. Add the bourbon and pack tightly with crushed ice. Stir until the cup is frosted on the outside. Top with more crushed ice to form an ice dome and garnish with a mint sprig.
Did You Know?
The Kentucky Derby was first run on May 1, 1875. The race was developed by a group called the Louisville Jockey Club, led by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., grandson of the famous explorer William Clark of Lewis and Clark. Of the three Triple Crown races, the Kentucky Derby is the only one to have been held every year since its inception. During its 149 year history, it has been postponed beyond the first Saturday in May just twice — in 1945, due to World War II, and in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
