Festival of Trees breaks fundraising record

This year’s Festival of Trees raised a record-breaking $23,500 for the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club. Over 26,000 raffle tickets were sold to people hoping to win a tree and all the gifts that accompanied it, and happy to contribute to an organization that serves hundreds of local children. Unit Director Debra Herrick said, “With this generous gift, we are excited to build on the Club’s capacity to foster creativity, collaboration, and kindness through revitalizing the Club’s arts and crafts program.”

Matthew and Sara Macias welcomed their son, Matteo Edward Macias, on Oct. 5, 2016 at 1:58 a.m. at Capital Medical Center in Olympia, Wash. Matteo arrived less than two hours after his daddy’s birthday, which made for the most marvelous present ever. He weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces and measured 19 1/2 inches in length.

Maternal grandparents are Robert and Iliana Schultz of Washington State. Paternal grandparents are Edward and Debbie Macias of Arizona. Great-grandparents include Shirley Savio who resides in Goleta and the late, longtime residents of Carpinteria, Edward and Sara Macias.

Procore staff sought to mentor

dozens of young Procore employees who could have been eating their lunch in the sunshine opted to stay inside on dec.

6 to hear a presentation on the benefits of becoming a mentor in Santa Barbara County. Ann Cowell, program coordinator for the Fighting Back Mentor Program, told the group that just an hour a week can change a life.

“I can guarantee it’ll be one of the most rewarding things you ever do,” said mentor Bob Kingston.

The program pairs mentors with kids in grades third through eighth who have been identified by their schools as needing support. The students referred, Cowell said, are vulnerable to future risks, not into drugs or gangs yet. The program only refers mentees who want to have a mentor.

Mentors should focus on three areas: be a friend, encourage education and have fun. They are expected to spend an hour a week with their mentee and commit to one year as a mentor. Initially, the time spent together is at lunch or after school on campus, but once a relationship is established and parents have given permission, mentors can take their mentees out to movies, trips to museums, the beach, etc. “A lot of kids who live in Carp, have never done normal Carp things,” said Cowell, who used visiting the Carpinteria Bluffs as an example.

Cowell noted that though Carpinteria is an expensive place to live, many lowincome families live locally. “We really do have a big poverty concern,” said Cowell.

“The need is very real for mentors.”

A national study found that mentored kids are more likely to go to college, participate in sports and extracurricular activities, and hold leadership positions in schools. Among students who participate in the Santa Barbara Fighting Back Mentor Program, 76 percent have improved their GPA, 92 percent are more resilient to drugs and alcohol, 60 percent have improved their social skills and 67 percent have improved family relationships.

Shaw appointed mayor, Nomura vice-mayor

After two years as Carpinteria’s vice mayor, Fred Shaw stepped into the mayor’s seat during the City Council meeting on Dec. 12. The council also voted to make Wade Nomura vice mayor.

Shaw and Nomura, both four-year veterans of the council, reclaimed their council seats in last month’s general election. They were sworn in for their next four-year term before being appointed to their new roles as mayor and vice mayor.

Councilman Al Clark nominated Shaw to serve as mayor for the next two-year term—a graduation from vice mayor that is typical on the council, though not mandated.

“To me this is paradise that we live in,” said Shaw. “I’ll do my best to keep Carpinteria the special place that it is.”

Carpinteria’s mayor chairs the council meetings, but holds little additional power on the five-person council. He or she can place items on the agenda, while additions otherwise require the request of two councilmembers.

Outgoing Mayor Gregg Carty thanked his family, friends and city staff for their support during his term. He said it had been a privilege to serve as mayor, and he promised to continue dedicating himself to the city and community. “I love our unique town and feel so lucky to call Carpinteria my home,” he said.

Sea glass festival seeks support

The City Council was introduced Monday night to a newly formed, local nonprofit working to host a sea glass

festival in Carpinteria on June 3-4, 2017.

Kiona Gross of Island View Sea Glass Festival asked the council to consider the group’s plans to close the block of 9th Street between Linden and Elm avenues for the weekend festival.

Gross, who chaired the committee for the 2015 Carpinteria Sea Glass Festival, said the proposed festival would stimulate business in downtown Carpinteria and contribute at least 50 percent of its proceeds back to local nonprofits. The popular Carpinteria Sea Glass Festival outgrew its venue, the former Austin’s Hardware, in its first year. As a result, some of its committee members splintered off to create the Santa Barbara Sea Glass Festival, which was held this year at Earl Warren Showgrounds. Gross, who is not involved in the Santa Barbara festival, has worked to bring a sea glass festival back to Carpinteria.

Council hears economic outlook

The Carpinteria City Council looked five years into the future this week in order to get a long-range view of Carpinteria’s finances in the wake of the Great Recession. Consultant William Statler presented a report on Dec. 12 indicating that the city had weathered the major downturn far better than many California municipalities and that it is in good fiscal shape moving forward.

Revenues from property tax, bed tax and sales tax account for 80 percent of the general fund, and each source has risen significantly in the last few years.

Property tax, the city’s biggest income source, plateaued between 2010 and 2013, but has risen sharply since. Sales tax took the hardest hit of the tax trio, dropping by 17 percent from 2008-2009 to 2010-2011, but it has rebounded and increased at a rate of 4.5 percent over the last couple years.

Costs that could rise in the next several years include law enforcement, employee pensions, retiree health care, and parks and street maintenance. Parks and streets are funded by assessment districts and other sources that are flat; as such, they’ve required major subsidies from the general fund in recent years. The five-year Sheriff’s Department contract will be renegotiated soon and could increase what is already the largest cost to the city.

Forecasting Carpinteria’s economic future requires considering bigger picture economics. “I won’t pretend to have a better crystal ball or secret sauce than anyone

else when it comes to predicting the direction of the national or state economy,” Statler’s report states. “That said, while there is uncertainty about the impact of ‘Brexit,’ the new Administration’s fiscal policies and the drought in California, most economists do not see significant economic storm clouds on the horizon for the nation or state.”

• Lucy Graham, the city’s new associate planner, was introduced to the City Council Monday night. Graham came from the County of Santa Barbara where she worked in housing and planning.

She has lived in Carpinteria for six years.

• Catherine Lee, a representative of GranVida, reported to the council that the soon-to-open senior living community has 30 of its suites reserved and, of those, 24 have been reserved by Carpinterians.

A mid-January opening is planned, and Lee announced a ribbon cutting and Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce mixer scheduled for Feb. 22 at GranVida.

Heroin trafficking suspect arrested

Kristopher Davis of Carpinteria was arrested for possessing heroin for sale and firearms on Dec. 9 at his home in the 1000 block of Elm Avenue. Prior to that, detectives from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department identified the 46-year-old man as being a heroin trafficker operating in Carpinteria.

When officers served a search warrant on Davis’ residence, they found 2.5 ounces of black tar heroin with a small amount of cocaine and methamphetamine packaged for narcotics sales. In addition, two stolen handguns, one unregistered handgun and two rifles were located and seized.

Davis was arrested and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail for Possession of Narcotics for Sale, being a Kristopher Davis Felon in Possession of a Firearm, being a Narcotics Addict in Possession of a Firearm, Possession of Stolen Firearms and Possession of High Capacity Magazines.

“Secret Ocean” plays at IMAX

For the next several months, Carpinterians have an opportunity to see one of their own in 3-D on the big, big screen at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Local marine educator Holly Lohuis, who works with Jean-Michel Cousteau at the Ocean Futures Society, co-stars in Cousteau’s newest documentary, “Secret Ocean,” which will be screened through next June at the center. Filmed over three years in vibrant marine environments from the Bahamas to Fiji, the first giant screen film directed by Cousteau points the lens at the smallest life in the sea. The film introduces viewers to over 30 species—some no bigger than an inch—and captures behaviors for the very first time thanks to the development of new filming technologies in ultra-HD 5K, slow motion, macro, and with motion control.

School District needs subs

Carpinteria unified School District, one of the city’s largest employers, has announced a shortage of substitute teachers. “When our teachers, aides, bus drivers, custodians, or food service professionals are sick or need to attend professional development, sites are scrambling to find substitutes,” reported Canalino Principal Jamie Persoon. requirements to become a substitute are as follows: bachelor’s degree, fingerprint clearance and passing the CBEST test. Substituting for a classified employee, such as instructional assistants and special education assistants, requires an application on file, a high school diploma or equivalent, and fingerprint clearance through the Department of Justice. Anyone interested should contact Darlene Avalos at the District Office for an application or more information at 684-4511. The district also welcomes and encourages volunteers from the community in the local schools.

Pacific Health helps homeless

Pacific Health Food owners Nathan and Whitney Noll recently decided to focus their giving on the local homeless population. They met with Luke Barrett from C3H (Central Coast Collaborative on Homelessness) in September to discuss how to help struggling community members as well as ensure the community’s safety. At Barrett’s suggestion, the Nolls sponsored a post office box that is now being used by six locals—a mailing address is necessary to receive several services.

Then, through the rotary Club, the Nolls were introduced to Deborah and Magda Barnes from Worth Street reach and Laundry Love, who provide free laundry services for those living below the poverty line in the local Santa Barbara area. “Their stories of local families struggling to get by inspired us to get involved and give back,” said Whitney. “So I spent a couple hours reaching out to companies such as Seventh Generation, Ecover and Dr. Bronners asking if they could donate some laundry essentials.

To my surprise they all responded with very generous donations, which included cases of product. It made us happy to know that not only will local families be able to utilize the Laundry Love services, and they will be able to utilize them while using products free of chemicals. All it took was a few hours and we were able to make a difference—such a great feeling.”

Foster families sought for furry holiday houseguests

As the holidays approach, there are over 200 dogs in the Santa Barbara County animal shelters that are looking for homes. Traditionally, not every dog has the opportunity to spend Christmas with a family, and the staff at the county’s three shelters want to change that this year—even if just for a few days. Santa Barbara County shelters are seeking three-day foster homes for all adoptable dogs at each county shelter for their second annual “Santa’s Slumber Party.” Foster homes will be given all necessary supplies to make their temporary houseguests comfortable. The dogs will be picked up from the shelter on Dec. 24 and returned to the shelter on Dec. 27.

Obituaries

Joan Isabel Burfitt 4/19/1938 – 12/8/2016

Joan Isabel Burfitt passed away on Dec. 8 after a long battle with cancer. She was born in San Francisco and grew up in Portland, Ore., where she attended Lewis and Clark College. She was employed by Merrill Lynch for 43 years in Portland, Ore.; Denver, Colo.; San Francisco, Calif.; Santa Barbara, Calif. and Oxnard, Calif.

Joan excelled at playing classical piano and spoke French. She belonged to the Soroptimist Club of Santa Barbara and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carpinteria. She contributed to many national animal charities and took in and cared for 93 orphaned animals over the last 30 years.

She is predeceased by her mother and father, Marguerite Isabel Burfitt and Frank Frederick Burfitt II, and her brother Frank Frederick Burfitt III. She is survived by her sister Marguerite Louise Lewis, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan requested that no services be held in her honor. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Cold Noses, Warm Hearts of Goleta or Visiting Nurses and Hospice Care of Santa Barbara.

Ruth Ardean Calvin 6/18/1928 – 11/24/2016

Ruth Ardean Calvin, 88, of Carpinteria, Calif., passed away on Nov. 24, 2016. She was born on June 18, 1928 in Grandfield, Okla. to John Berry Robertson and Maude (Logan) Robertson, and was the youngest of their seven children. As a teenager, Ruth moved to Glendale, Calif. where she attended college and later married Malcolm Lee Hoffert. Ruth had a variety of careers throughout her life. She was a mother extraordinaire, and also an administrative assistant both at Lockheed and UCSB. In the 1970s, following her divorce, Ruth became a successful real estate agent for Sunset Realty. Soon after, she met and married the love her life, John Henry Calvin. Together they pursued and enjoyed their shared passions for worldwide travel and the fine arts.

Ruth Ardean Calvin is survived by her children: Jen Ray (Rita Ralston), Rebecca McCloud, Barry Hoffert (Kim Hoffert, Robert and Ashley Boileau,); grandchildren Justin Ray, Devin Ray, Lincoln Nordby (Kristina Nordby) and Shiloh Nordby (Sara Roth); great-grandson Garrett Nordby; two of her sisters, Kate Palmer and Ruby Ellis, and numerous nephews and nieces. A celebration of Ruth Ardean Calvin’s life will be held on Dec. 27, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. at Stella Mares, 50 Los Patos Way, Santa Barbara, Calif. Patricia Noel Neller Deardorff 7/31/1939 – 12/7/2016

Patricia Noel Neller Deardorff died Wednesday, Dec. 7 with her family at her side after a year-long battle with cancer, and a brief stay at Serenity House in Santa Barbara. Born in Madison, Wisc., on July 31, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Dr. James Locke Neller and Patricia Christine Atcherson Neller. Patti came with her parents to California after her father’s return from the Pacific Theater during World War II, where he was a surgeon for the U.S. Navy. Patti and her two sisters, Shari and Leigh, grew up in the Los Angeles area. After graduating Dorsey High School in Los Angeles, Patti attended UCLA where she pledged Kappa Alpha Theta, was a “Bruin Belle” and in 1956 was selected the “Sigma Nu White Rose Queen.”

Patti met her late husband William Winston (Bill) Deardorff, Jr. while at UCLA. They married in 1960 and lived in Newport Beach until transferring to Oxnard in 1966 with Bill’s family farm then known as Deardorff-Jackson Company, now Deardorff Family Farms. In 1974 Patti and her family moved to Carpinteria where her three sons attended Carpinteria High School. Patti’s home on Rincon Point was also a second home to many local surfers in the late 70’s and early 80’s. In 1986, after her divorce from Bill, Patti moved to Santa Barbara, residing in a little cottage on Valerio Street.

Patti was a gifted artist, practicing in many mediums. Her award winning art was exhibited in fine galleries in Ventura, Malibu, Montecito, Santa Barbara and Los Olivos from 1969 to 1990. After earning a degree in “Confluent Education” from UCSB in 1985, Patti worked as an art instructor for schools in Oxnard, Santa Barbara, Carpinteria and Santa Ynez.

She also used her art as therapy while counseling Vietnam Veterans and working with the elderly. She will be remembered for her creative jewelry, pen and ink drawings, paintings, collage and most recently computer art, where her designs graced everything from wine bottle labels to magazines.

Patti is survived by her three sons Scott Thomas and wife Leslie Holmes, James Durston and wife Susan Kieding, and William Winston, III; her two sisters Shari Beata Starrett and Leigh Locke and husband Wes Weesner; her sister and brotherin-law Tom and Connie Deardorff; and four grandchildren Robert Briggs, Emma Victoria, William Dustin and Ella Lee. Memorial services will be held on Jan. 15 at 2864 East Valley Road in Santa Barbara.

Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara or Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care.

Michael M. Moses

Michael M. Moses passed away last Tuesday, Dec. 6 at his home overlooking the Carpinteria Valley. Michael leaves his wife, Patricia, and their two daughters, Katie and Shauna, as well as three granddaughters.

Born in Inglewood, Calif., Michael grew up with a deep passion for the ocean. He swam competitively throughout grade school as well as later on in high school and college. After graduating from Venice High School, he was hired as a lifeguard for Los Angeles County, while still continuing his education at Santa Monica College. Michael earned numerous accolades for his excellent work as a lifeguard, including a Lifeguard of the Year title in 1994. In 1984 Michael began work at the Santa Barbara City Fire Department. While continuing to lifeguard during the summer, Michael made a name for himself at the SBFD. His outstanding leadership skills earned him the rank of Ladder Truck Captain in 1997.

He even started a water rescue program later on in his career.

No matter how hard Mike worked, he always found time to enjoy the ocean, whether it was surfing, fishing, paddling or just sitting in the sun listening to the sound of the surf. Those who knew Mike knew him as an exceptional human being. He was always friendly, calm and encouraging. Above all, he was a devoted father and husband.

In 2010 Michael was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells. He underwent dozens of chemotherapies, radiation treatments, as well as two stem-cell transplants. His fighting spirit finally resigned just a few short weeks ago. In addition to his devoted wife Patricia, Michael is survived by his two daughters, Katie and Shauna, and granddaughters, Isabella, Madeline and Samantha.

In the last CVN, Bob McDonald wrote, “Bottom line: Our District is doing everything it can to protect residents, farmers and businesses from severe drought impacts…” Can you really say you are doing everything you can if the obvious, wasteful use of water for lawns is tolerated? In terms of optics alone, how seriously can the urgent need for conservation be taken when so many homeowners flaunt their water-guzzling choice of landscaping?

Urban residential landscape water consumption in California is greater than consumption for residential indoor purposes. Yes, a dead lawn is certainly not pleasing to the eye, but landscape irrigation can be cut in half or more by replacing lawns with alternative plantings. The Carpinteria Valley Water District should show solidarity with Santa Barbara, and ban the use of our tenuous water supplies for the irrigation of residential lawns.

Dig deep for the arts

I’m a past board member and current volunteer at the Carpinteria Arts Center.

The center is currently in the middle of a campaign to raise money to pay for the purchase of the former Cajun Kitchen restaurant, complete a remodel and provide an endowment for the future. Give the guy a chance

Donald Trump is our president-elect.

In this era of almost-instant media exposure I fear that all of us have witnessed far too much biased nonsense emanating from both major political parties. At this time I strongly suggest a reading of Trump’s easy-to-read book, “Crippled America: How to Make America Great Again,” in which his ideas and thoughts are clearly articulated. You may disagree with some of them. That’s fine. But be willing to read what he has to say on the variety of issues. He will be our 45th President.

And let’s realize that the United States is a federal republic. Article 2, Section 1 of our Constitution makes it clear that our president is chosen by the states, not by popular vote in the country. If you are not familiar with why our Founding Fathers established this process, I encourage you to research the topic. I believe that the recent election illustrates the wisdom of their actions. While I would like to see the electoral college process “tweaked”

just a bit, I like the concept even though my vote for Trump was, other than being symbolic, lost in Clinton’s 55-0 sweep of California’s electoral votes.

I claim no special political expertise.

However, I do feel many good and wellintentioned people rely too heavily on instant media exposure and don’t have an understanding of the Electoral College process. Again, I do encourage reading Trump’s book and, if necessary, personal research on the Electoral College.

Agree to disagree

I do not wish to embarrass Bob Franco, the author of last week’s letter “Frightening Power,” but what I have to say is that (his arguments are) utter, complete nonsense.

As a nation we are in debt. No one in Washington has been able to fix this. We just go deeper in debt every year. I have a family budget, and I believe the nation should have one too. Over 1 million Americans (feel how many people that is) have directly lost their livelihoods since Jan. 1, 1994 when NAFTA was signed.

In this agreement, our government incentivized our companies to leave the U.S. These were jobs with security and benefits, and most were union jobs. I want them back. I want America to be the best place for businesses to grow and innovate.

I want inner city kids to have real opportunities. Why should all of those beautiful creative minds be trapped in the despair created by a dysfunctional system? I am for school choice. And I am for bringing educational monies back home, to the parents and community. I want a reduction in bureaucratic intrusion in our lives. My husband works for a small family-owned business that employs about 50 people. His company is regulated by 23 different agencies. I want the government to serve, not to be served.

So (supporting the Trump presidency) is not about racism, sexism, Islamophobia, homophobia, xenophobia or ignorance as last week’s author believes—it is about using common sense to solve big problems.

On Dec. 4 Water Protectors at Standing Rock, N.D. celebrated news that the Army Corps of Engineers denied the permit to drill the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) beneath the Missouri River. Soon after, Energy Transfer Partners, the corporation behind construction of DAPL, officially announced that construction would proceed without permission.

I bake to ease an incessant shaking in my boots that commenced at the rancorous finish of this year’s election. And I do it to honor my mother and a family tradition of making and sharing goodies during the season of giving.

My mom was a great baker. Her pies won first prizes at the county fair, and every winter relatives looked forward to the mincemeat and apple pies that issued from her oven, each golden crust embellished with a Christmas tree cutout in the center.

She tried to show me how to make those winning crusts, but I was a hopeless failure. She was a crust whisperer, sprinkling liquid into the dough with a pastry brush until it reached some magic equilibrium. Mom set the bar, and when you’ve grown up eating pies like hers, you’re spoiled for all others.

Candy was her other Christmas specialty—penuche fudge and colored fondants with nuts pressed into the center.

Aunts and uncles all got a plate of these colorful goodies, covered with plastic wrap and tied up with curling ribbon.

Forget the expensive sweaters, electric tools and kitchen gadgets. Home-baked offerings were the gifts. During the holidays my family drove through long, cold Central Valley nights to deliver the riches from my mother’s kitchen.

I don’t even try for pies. My baking is more mundane—pumpkin and ginger bread, cherry scones, shortbread cookies, nutted popcorn, candied pecans. Those aunts and uncles from my past are long past, so now I bake for friends, because nothing seems more appropriate for the season than homemade sweets. And nothing is more satisfying these short days of winter than sitting down with a cup of tea and a shortbread cookie or a slice of pumpkin bread.

And I bake for the comfort of the oven’s warmth and the sweet smells wafting through the house. Cinnamon, ginger and cloves brighten the senses and lift the spirits. I’m hoping that the process—mixing flour and eggs, sugar and butter, adding spices, stirring, pouring, waiting while the kitchen warms and

have occurred on U.S. pipelines, polluting soil, waterways and air, leaving 80 people dead and 389 injured between 2010 and 2015.

DAPL remains a threat; so does the recently approved Trans Mountain Pipeline project in British Columbia, which would transfer 890,000 barrels/day equal to 37,380,000 gallons per day to be shipped by tanker to China. To give some perspective, this amount would fill the entire Empire State Building in one week. Also the Trans Peco and Sabal Trail Pipeline projects, and the battle to stop development of Arctic oil raise controversy.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. explained “the battle over the transition from an old energy economy to a new energy economy,” pointing out that “today wind and solar are much cheaper than traditional, old

delectable smells fill the air—will provide a temporary respite from the boot quaking at what I fear the new year will bring.

I’m shaking in my boots because I listened to what our president elect said, and I took him at his word. I believed he meant it when he described women as pigs and said he felt free to grope them.

I believed him when he said he would build a border wall and deport millions of undocumented residents, including children. I believed him when he said he would institute torture and there should be a religious test for entry into the U.S. I believed him when he said judges couldn’t be trusted to be impartial if they were from an ethnic minority. I believed him when he called journalists scum (that would include me, I guess).

I took Trump’s words as promises, understanding that they constituted a threat to what I held dear about democracy, its fair-minded openness, freedom and egalitarianism. I believed him because isn’t that what you’re expected to do? Accept that someone running for president of our country will speak with honesty, maybe even integrity?

What I didn’t believe was the president elect’s statement about “draining the swamp.” Not when every day there is more evidence that the swamp is being richly refilled, fortified with advisers and appointees who are bankers, Wall Street insiders, lobbyists and power brokers.

Every new fat cat or poorly qualified appointment causes my boot shaking to increase.

So I retreat to the kitchen this cold season, hoping to bake away some of the fear and trembling. I understand it’s a temporary thing, returning to the traditions of childhood, seeking the old comfort of holidays past. Offering the warmth of bread and spices to my nearest and dearest in hopes of asserting in these small rituals a sense of continuity, reminders that we are a family, committed as always to supporting and loving one another.

One good thing: Remarks made during a recent speech by our newly elected First District Supervisor Das Williams— “Despair is not the appropriate response to the election. First, no matter what the Trump Administration does, California will continue to lead. Second, people who are under siege do not have the luxury to mourn, we must act. Last, the best news is that most of the solutions are not dependent on decisions by a president or any other part of government—they are dependent on what we as consumers buy or don’t buy—such as how much gas we buy.”

Performance pressure is about to reach a maximum for Savannah Larsen, the our Lady of Mount Carmel eighth-grader who takes the stage this weekend as leading lady in the Curtis Studio of dance production of “The Nutcracker.” Although Larsen said she feels nervous, the precocious young woman said she believes that challenges are what define us.

“The pressure is on me to make the show great,” she said, “but I like challenges.”

Larsen started dancing at age 8. Many of her peers started earlier, but Larsen’s passion, dedication and practice time have caught her up, and then some. The 13-yearold takes eight different classes at the studio—ballet, pointe, Broadway, Jazz, tap, acrobatics, hip hop and lyrical.

She found out last summer that the sought-after role of Clara would be hers for the 2016 “Nutcracker” production. “I was so happy because I’ve always wanted to be Clara. It’s my dream role,” she said.

Larsen will play a character dreamed up 200 years ago. Though Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote the music in 1892 for what would become the most famous ballet of all time, Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann wrote the original story in 1816. The character Clara is given a Nutcracker doll that comes to life and, after defeating the evil Mouse King in battle, whisks her away to a magical kingdom populated by dolls.

“The Nutcracker” will be performed on Friday, dec. 16 at 7 p.m., and Saturday dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at Carpinteria Middle School, 5351 Carpinteria Ave. Local dancers of all ages are cast in the production, as well as a few professionals. On Nov. 26 at about midnight a Sheriff’s deputy was driving westbound in the 4900 block of Carpinteria Avenue when he saw a black BMW exit a parking lot. Illuminating the bottom of the driver’s side door with his vehicle’s searchlight, the deputy identified the driver of the BMW in the ambient light, and recognized him as a known addict with multiple recent arrests. The deputy made a U-turn and followed the vehicle to Linden Avenue.

A records check revealed that the registration had expired and the deputy then initiated a traffic stop.

Upon contact with the deputy, the man confirmed that he had been arrested six days prior on drug charges and that he recognized the deputy now pulling him over from that incident. The man had told the deputy, “I know I got a f---ken problem,” and that he planned to go to a treatment program this month. The 53-year-old man said he had been using heroin for a couple of years after his son had died of a heroin overdose. He said that he wanted to see what the “fancy” of heroin was since he could not help his son to stop using it. He tried it and has been using ever since.

As the man was in violation of a law against a drug addict driving a vehicle, the deputy searched him and found a small torch in his pants pocket. The man told the deputy that he had still not been able to “kick it,” referring to his drug addiction. When the man stepped out of his car, the deputy saw a piece of foil in the driver’s door pocket and another on the floorboards. A second deputy picked up the foil and noted that there was a streak of blackened material in it, which is consistent with heroin use (smoking). When deputies asked to search the man’s car, he said he did not want them to search it, but they told him that they had probable cause. “Then why you asking then?” the

man said. “Go for it, I don’t care…”

The deputy found a small baggie “commonly used to package narcotics,” he noted, in the bottom of the door pocket. The baggy had a brownish residue that a field test later revealed to be heroin. Additionally, deputies found crystal methamphetamine, multiple used syringes and a syringe loaded with a brownish liquid that they suspected was heroin, along with three “good sized brownish tarry balls,” also suspected to be heroin. A burnt spoon with a cotton ball was also found—paraphernalia used to inject heroin.

“It should be noted,” the deputy reported, “… while transporting him to Santa Barbara County Jail (name withheld)’s cellphone kept getting text and phone calls from two subjects. One of the subjects indicated that he had arrived and was waiting for him by a truck.”

Based on the amount of drugs found and the pre-packaged heroin (the three balls were found in cellophane packets), the deputy believed the drugs were being transported for sale, and recommended that the District Attorney charge the man for that crime as well.

Girl trouble

On Nov. 28 at approximately 2:30 a.m. a Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to a residence on Willow Place on a call of vandalism. A plant had been uprooted from the front porch of the residence and the mailbox smashed. A 53-year-old man who lives at the residence called 911 when

the vandalism occurred, and stated that he had seen a man running away after he’d come out of his house because of the noise of the mailbox being smashed.

The man was unable to make a positive identification but said he suspected a local man had committed the vandalism.

Earlier that night, he said, he had received a call from a 22-year-old woman he knew who was arguing with her boyfriend at a brewery. He’d given her a ride to his house and let her stay there because she didn’t feel comfortable staying at her home. The woman gave the name of her boyfriend along with his address to the deputy. The man said that when he went to the brewery he had observed the woman arguing with her boyfriend, and then given her a ride to his house. The deputy went to the boyfriend’s house and left a card with a note to call him.

On Dec. 4 the deputy called the man suspected of the vandalism, and the man was apologetic. He said that he had already spoken to the man whose mailbox he had smashed and offered to pay him $1,000 for the trouble he’d caused.

The man with the smashed mailbox was away in Florida according to the admitted vandal, but he said that he’d told him he would drop charges if he paid for the damages. Deputies will follow up with the man whose mailbox got smashed to confirm that an agreement has been made to replace/repair the damage.

Two major moments in Franklin Trail history took place on Dec. 9. First, U.S. Forest Service Ranger John F. Smith announced his decision to reopen and allow restoration work to begin on the 2.69-mile portion of the trail from the Los Padres National Forest boundary to the crest of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Then, that evening, Turkey Trot and Tread coordinators announced that over $13,000 had been raised toward the final segment of the local trail.

Both pieces of news were celebrated at the Turkey Trot awards ceremony held that night at Island Brewing Company, where participants collected prizes for everything from highest amount raised for the trail, to most creative and fun contributions to the challenge.

Top fundraisers were Kim Fly, Beth Cox, Marla Van Stein and Gregorio Perez.

Cox, who helped to coordinate the event, said that the fundraising grand total is expected to rise to $15,000 by the time all the funds are collected. Turkey Trotters who completed the most trail trips were David Allen, Madeleine Leonard and Gregorio Perez. Gogi Medel Burquez won the prize

for most creative participant.

Significant work has been completed leading up to the approval of trail construction. Ray Ford led volunteer work crews in cutting a preliminary line and uncovering the historic Franklin Trail.

The trail underwent environmental review, trail planning and construction in conformance to national and U.S Forest Service standards. Leidos, an international environmental sciences firm with a local office, donated time to the project for the biological report and the Franklin Trail map, which reduced the project cost by more than $10,000.

Work on the trail will begin in January with tentative plans to complete the work by the middle of March. The Santa Barbara County Trails Council and Los Padres Forest Association will partner to construct the trail for use by hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers. Carpinterians interested in being notified about volunteer opportunities are encouraged to register with the Trails Council at sbtrails.org/volunteer/ ––Lea Boyd

How could 12 months slip by, and I only counted three? Didn’t I just take down all the decorations and clean up wrapping paper and bows? Didn’t I just put stamps on about a million Christmas cards? And I’m sure I still have leftover cookies in the pantry and a tin containing a petrifying fruit cake. Do I really have to do this all again?

The list of chores is endless: 1. Be nice.

2. Shop for presents.

3. Buy a tree.

4. Be nice and donate to charity.

5. Unpack all the Christmas decorations and make your house look like a winter wonderland even though we live in Southern California.

6. Write a family letter to include in 150 Christmas cards informing everyone about your perfect children, your per-

11. Be nice, donate, volunteer and have your neighbor over for a cup of eggnog.

12. Sing Christmas carols.

13. Go to the local school’s Christmas pageant.

14. Be nice, donate, volunteer, act neighborly and think of the needs of others.

15. Cook a huge meal.

16. Invite all your local family members over for Christmas dinner, even the ones you don’t especially like.

17. Collapse, find a relaxing spa and read a good book.

Please note, I did not include the activity of parties, either giving one or attending one. For some, the idea of giving or going to a party can be either a positive or a negative depending on time, place, menu and/or participants.

As a child, I looked forward to Christmas from New Year’s Eve on. I loved helping to decorate the tree with my dad, baking iced sugar cookies and trying to hide them from my brother, playing carols on the piano (no one asked me to sing), and having relatives over for a big meal in our dining room and using the “good” china. School vacation meant free time, and Christmas meant we could imagine all sorts of surprise acquisitions. Santa was certainly on my radar, but I didn’t really count on him to come through with the big stuff.

I was taught all the usual religious beliefs surrounding this holiday, and I did come around to understand that the happiness I could give or create for the people I loved was much more rewarding than any present I actually received myself. (Of course, I never did get the electric train I really wanted so that might have changed my worldview a bit.)

Christmas reminds me of making popcorn balls with my mom, playing wicked games of Scrabble with various relatives, having enchiladas cooked by my dad for Christmas Eve dinner, and waiting for the magic to arrive. Because when Christmas is near, there is always magic around. It could be a special moment, a tender memory, the sound of a grandchild’s laughter, or an endearing smile that simply brings us joy. And just like the Grinch, our hearts expand, and we become better selves—at least for a bit.

Melinda Wittwer first moved to Carpinteria in 1972 and taught mostly junior high students in Oxnard during her 25-year career.

Now retired, she enjoys pottery, writing, books and travel.

Cal-SOAP honors Bob Keatinge

Bob Keatinge, longtime educator and administrator for the local school district, was honored recently for his 32 years as a boardmember for the Santa Barbara California Student Opportunities and Access Program (Cal-SOAP). Keatinge played an integral role in bringing the program—which helps underserved and underrepresented students with accessing post-secondary education—to the Santa Barbara area in 1984 and has since served on its governing board.

Reflecting on his retirement from the board, Keatinge expressed that he is proud of the work Cal-SOAP has done to help students who would not have otherwise thought to attend college.

Prior to Cal-SOAP’s arrival, UCSB had been providing Financial Aid Assistance and presentations to the schools, but

their programs were very scattered. “Bill Cordero thought it would be a good idea to bring Cal-SOAP in to help manage all the services pertaining to college access,” recalled Keatinge. “He approached me because at the time I was the State and Federal Projects Coordinator and could provide the data that was needed to ask for funding.”

The Santa Barbara Cal-SOAP consortium began reaching out to an increasing number of students, and provided information and academic support to underachieving students. Keatinge announced at end of the 2015-2016 school year that he would be retiring and stepping down from the Cal-SOAP Governing Board. His many years of dedication were celebrated on Dec. 2 at the Twelv35 Teen Center in downtown Santa Barbara.

Tears tend to accompany the annual Light Up a Life and Hospice tree lighting ceremony, and plenty of them were flowing at this year’s event.

The moving ceremony held at the seal fountain on Linden Avenue benefits Hospice of Santa Barbara and serves as a memorial for friends, family and neighbors who have passed. The 2016 event, held on Dec. 10, included songs performed by John Vale, a spiritual perspective by Reverend Laura Mancuso, and poetry readings by Perie Longo and Patrice Handley.

Crosstown rivals hit the hardwood last Saturday, as the girls basketball teams from both Carpinteria High School and Cate School clashed at the Bird Cage Classic Tournament on Bishop Diego’s home court in Santa Barbara. In the end, the Rams proved to be no match for the Warriors, as Carpinteria came away with a 53-19 win.

The Warriors were led by a balanced attack with senior Tori Kelly leading the way with 13 points. Junior Kayana Diaz added 11, while senior Monique Sanchez registered 9. “Tonight our team played well, nine of our 12 players scored, with our bench contributing 15 points,” said Carpinteria coach Amy Bryant. Seniors Harmony Reed and Juliet Parsons rounded out the scoring with five each.

It was the play of the guards, however, that may have made the difference. “Our guards once again did a great job, contributing 33 of our 53 points,” explained Bryant.

“The way they shared the ball really impressed me, they did an excellent job moving the ball around,” added Bryant.

Cate didn’t down without a fight. Co-captain Ram guards Amber Thiery and Morgan Prinz put up 12 and five points respectively. Prinz also pulled down five rebounds, while Maya Blattberg and Sarah Polowczak each pitched in two points apiece. Playing in their third game of the tournament, the Rams were unable to keep up the pace. “The Rams struggled to find consistency in their defense and had a hard time adjusting,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta.

“We played unselfish basketball, which is what every coach wants to see,” said Bryant. With the Warriors in the Tri-Valley League and the Rams in the Frontier, the two are not scheduled to meet again this season.

Cate girls have high hopes for season

Although the Cate girls basketball team will miss the playmaking and scoring of last year’s standout senior Elan Halpern, and the strong support of other grads, Mikaela Li and Charlotte Pecot, coach Amy Venditta still returns a strong Ram squad.

“The Rams are led by co-captain Amber Thiery, a tall pointshooting guard who is fully healed from a previous seasonending ACL injury,” said Venditta, who has been at the school since 2013. “(Thiery) is tough on the defensive end, and will be looking to penetrate and score this year on the offensive end,” explained Venditta.

Co-Captain Morgan Prinz will be a force under the basket.

“The team will lean on (Prinz) for leadership, defensive toughness…,” said Venditta.

Cate will also have returning sophomore Sarah Polowczak, who used her speed and agility on the offensive and defensive ends of the court last year. “The team will lean on (Polowczak) to break presses, penetrate defenses, and score easy baskets on layups,” confirmed Venditta.

Returning to the Frontier League for another season, Cate will compete against Bishop Diego, Fillmore, Grace Brethren, Malibu, Nordhoff, Thacher and Villanova Prep this time around. Playing their opener on Dec. 1 at home against league foe Bishop Diego, the Rams fell to the Cardinals by a score of 33-19.

December 6 - The Cate School boys soccer team played to a 3-3 draw at San Marcos.

The Royals scored first in the 20th minute after splitting the Rams’ defense right up the middle and controlling a loose ball in front of the goal, and tapping it in. However, in the 39th minute, Cate equalized on only their second shot of the game when senior captain Christian Herman shaped a free kick around the Royals’ wall from 22 yards out that found the lower left corner of the net. Following a San Marcos converted penalty kick, in the 62nd minute, senior Juan Magalhaes broke free on goal and slid the ball across to freshman Buba Fofanah who finished from six yards out to even the score. Eleven minutes later, Magalhaes found room on the right flank again and kicked a low cross in front of the San Marcos goal that sophomore Bailor Jalloh one-timed into the back of the net. Unfortunately, in the final minute of the game, a San Marcos attacker ended up on a breakaway after a deflection to knot the game at three each.

December 8 - The Cate School boys soccer team picked up its second win of the season, defeating rival Thacher 1-0 on the Mesa. The Rams forced play, as the Thacher keeper made three saves in the opening 15 minutes, and then produced their lone goal of the game in the 35th minute when freshman Buba Fofanah got fouled in the Toad box as senior captain Christian Herman converted the penalty kick into the upper left corner. Play see-sawed back and forth for much of the second half, with Thacher hitting the Cate post once and the Rams being thwarted by the Toads keeper, as well as hitting the post on yet another penalty kick. “Sophomore keeper Cullen Barber was fantastic on the day, recording seven saves,” said Cate coach Pete Mack of his team’s defensive standout. The Rams outshot the Toads 21-13. The win moves Cate to 2-0-1 on the season.

Amber Thiery sealed the win with another made free throw, giving her a total of nine points for the game. “Piper Brooks also played incredibly well in the guard position, with very little turnovers and extremely consistent play,” said Rams coach Amy Venditta. Maya Blattberg finished with one point, while Elle Smith scored eight. Georgia Douglas pitched in two points.

December 6 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team dropped a non-league game to defending CIF Champs Oxnard, 5-1. Down 3-0, the Warriors responded when Aisha Duarte hit a free kick from the edge of the 18 to the far post where Elizabeth Estrada headed it home. “I was very happy with all of our players, but Aisha Duarte, Alejandra Alvarez and Alejandra Garcia really stood out,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant. The game was played mostly in the Warrior half after the Yellow Jackets’ third goal. “We had quite a few early opportunities that we let slip away and I think the game might have been a bit different if we put away those chances,” explained Bryant. The Warriors are now 1-3 overall.

December 7 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team dropped a non-league match to Foothill Tech by a score of 5-2. “As was the case yesterday, (in the Warriors loss to Oxnard) Alejandra Alvarez was outstanding,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant of Alvarez of his player who scored both goals for the squad. “Our keeper, Laura Valdez, was also solid,” added Bryant. The Warriors are now 1-4 overall and still 0-0 in the Frontier League.

December 10 - The Cate School boys soccer team suffered its first loss of the season at Laguna Blanca, losing 2-1 in a non-league contest. In the 35th minute, freshman Buba Fofanah collected a deflection and slotted it inside the far post to give the Rams a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime. Laguna evened the score in the 64th minute on a breakaway, and took the lead nine minutes later when an Owl forward came free on the far post and redirected a pass into the Cate net. “Sophomore Bailor Jalloh was superb on both sides of the ball, as was senior captain Ryan Borchardt,” said Rams coach Pete Mack. “Defensively, junior Ben Jessup and sophomore Jack Deardorff held the back line together with some strong play,” added Mack. The loss drops the Rams to 2-1-1 on the season.

December 8 - The Cate School boys basketball team prevailed in a matchup with Ojai Valley Invitational defending tournament champion Rio Hondo by a score of 57-49. Marko Pliso opened up the Ram lead by knocking down four 3-pointers in the third quarter to help the team to hold on for the victory. Pliso finished with 22 points, leading all scorers. Rio Hondo’s Mikey Tsogt came in averaging 25-plus, and finished with 20. “I credit a great defensive effort by Chase McCaw who was able to slow down Tsogt in the second quarter, not allowing him a bucket and making him earn every point in the fourth quarter,” said Cate coach Andy Gil. Andy McHarg knocked down seven points, Bryce Huerta chipped in five points, Noah Meyer also had seven; while, Mason Mackall finished with nine points and nine rebounds.

December 9 - The Cate School boys basketball team in the second round of the Ojai Invitational fell to Coast Union by a score of 44-35. Marko Pliso finished with a game high 17 points while Coast Union had a much more balanced attack with five players scoring four or more points. Auggie Johnson for Coast Union finished with 14 points. “We dug ourselves a hole; we never were able to get out of by giving the other team almost twice as many possessions due to our 19 team turnovers,” said Rams coach Andy Gil. December 10 - The Cate School boys basketball team took third place at the Ojai Invitational as a result of a 50-48 victory over McAuliffe. Ram Pierce Lundt made a couple of free throws with six seconds left on the clock to seal the win. Marko Pliso finished with 24 points, and Cate forward Noah Meyer contributed nine points and seven rebounds. McAuliffe took their first lead in the game with four minutes to go as Cate’s leading scorer, Pliso, fouled out of the game. “We regained composure and were able to put consecutive stops together in a row,“ said Rams coach Andy Gil. Cate is 3-2 after the weekend.

December 8 - The Cate School girls basketball team played its first game of the Bird Classic Tournament at Bishop Diego against Santa Maria, falling to the Saints by a score of 41-27. “Captain Amber (Thiery) played well as a leader, she led the offense, took care of the ball, and created opportunities for herself scoring six points total,” said Rams coach Amy Venditta. Elle Smith was back for her first game of the season, scoring six points and pulling down six rebounds. Sarah Polowczak finished with two points, Morgan Prinz scored four points and Piper Brooks chipped in three. Georgia Douglas was able to put up four points, and Daphne McKeefry and Maya Blattberg each registered two. “Laura Vences started the game, and played with great effort,” said Venditta.

Dayne Wagner opened the scoring with a shot from 25 yards out. “But, after that it was the Alejandra Alvarez show,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant who finished the game with three goals. Aisha Duarte and Yaneli Silva each got an assist on Alvarez’s second and third goals. “Xochitl Moreno and Aly Springer were very solid on defense as well,” added Bryant. Carpinteria is now 2-4 overall.

December 6 - The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team in a match versus Oxnard, came away with a 1-1 tie. In the 24th minute, Vincent gonzalez became the fifth Warrior to score a goal this year. After taking a 1-0 lead into the half, Carpinteria allowed the tying goal in the 57th minute. “We will carry the momentum and play with confidence,” said Warriors coach Leo Quintero about the upcoming game. Carpinteria moves to 0-2-2 overall, and have yet to play a league game.

December 8 - The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team in their first preseason game at home, fell to Channel Islands by a score of 4-1. After the Raider team scored four minutes into the game, the Warriors responded, scoring seven minutes later in the 12th minute off of a set play on a corner in which luis garcia took and alex ramirez made a run, and finished with a header shot past the Channel Islands keeper. “The Raiders are a great team and we accepted the challenge, and unfortunately we weren’t able to match their style of play as they went on to score in the 16th, 39th and 58th minute to finish with a win …,” said Carpinteria coach Leo Quintero. “The coaching staff, athletic administrators and our fan base which include parents, friends, family and the Carpinteria community believe in this group and support our program day in, day out,” added Quintero.

December 10 - The Carpinteria High School soccer team entered Dos Pueblos territory in search of the first win of the season, but came away with a 2-1 loss. In the 13th minute, alex ramirez was fouled inside the 18, creating an opportunity in the form of a penalty kick. Seconds later, junior and team captain luis garcia rolled in a shot into the left-hand corner as the Charger keeper leaned toward the opposite side.

With a 1-0 lead, the Warriors were unable to play out of the back after giving up a ball on their third of the field, and the game was tied with two minutes left in the first half. “The Chargers took the lead 2-1 in the 62nd minute in a somewhat controversial offside play, considering there was a line-judge close to the play,” explained Warriors coach Leo Quintero. “Nonetheless our boys played a great match.” Carpinteria goes into finals week, as the Warriors prepare to close out the first scholastic semester with an overall record of 0-4-2 with league play still ahead.

Carpinteria gym empower Fitness brought a four-person team to the Nov. 12 battle of the boxes and finished the day in ninth place out of 41 teams. emlynn Iannelli, Sandra Garcia, mitchell bragg and Shawn Godkin competed in three events throughout the day that included a variety of exercises, fitness skill sets, cardiovascular demands and strategy. Via Real Physical Therapy sponsored the team, and its new owner, Dr. omar Flores, set up a table and did body work and myofascial release in-between the workouts. “I was really proud of our team because empower Fitness was competitive against some of the best Affiliates in the Santa barbara and Ventura area,” reported Iannelli, owner of empower.

December 8 - The Carpinteria High School basketball team in the first day of the Fillmore Tournament lost to Foothill Tech by a score of 66-60. noah nuño led the Warriors with 26, including five three-pointers, and Dom Sturdivan knocked down 20 points with three treys. “The Warriors had a tale of two halves,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales whose team led 41-29 at halftime. The 12-point lead at the half was down to five at the end of the third. The Dragons would make 12 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. The Warriors are 2-1 overall, 0-0 in League.

December 9 - The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team in day two of the Fillmore Tournament beat Santa Paula, 56 to 46. terrell richardson led with 21 points and took five charging calls at the defensive end. “They (the Warriors) were led by Richardson and Dom Sturdivan with good defense and rebounding, and scoring,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales. The Warriors trailed Santa Paula at halftime, 27-14. Carpinteria scored 28 points in the final period compared to 10 by the Cardinals to close out the game. “I was happy with the way we responded in the second half, but we have to learn to play a full 32 minutes to have the success we want,” said Gonzales.

December 10 - The Carpinteria High School basketball in day three of the Fillmore Tournament beat host Fillmore, 73-57 to win the Consolation Championship. noah nuño who averaged 21 points in the three games was named to the All-Tournament Team. “I felt we had three young men very worthy of making the All-Tournament Team terrell richardson, Dom Sturdivan and noah nuño,” said Warriors coach Henry Gonzales. Carpinteria led 41-30 at the half, as Nuño scored 17 points and Sturvian had 10 by the break. “The Warriors also did a good job of defensive rebounding that started their transition game, outrunning the Flashes down the floor for easy scoring opportunities,” explained Gonzales. Carpinteria is 4-1 overall and 0-0 in League.

December 9 and 10 - The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team traveled to the Los Altos Tournament over the weekend, returning home after winning three of five games. The Warriors were led in scoring by freshman Sadie mead with seven goals, complemented by seniors leilanie Silva and morgan whitney’s six goals each. “In what is emerging as the signature of this year’s squad, strong defense was the story of Warrior success,” said Carpinteria coach Lance Hoffman. nicole Poulos made 59 saves in five games, including a shutout of West Covina in the 11-0 final match. Senior co-captain alisa lemere collected 24 steals in the tournament, including a single-game school record of 13 steals in the West Covina contest. The tournament marked the last matches before Winter break, with games resuming on Jan. 10 against crosstown rival Cate School.

Cate earns three spots on All-CIF Football Team

The Cate School football team had three of its student-athletes named to the 2016 eight-man All-CIF Football Team. Senior Henry Dawson, and sophomores Drew Anastasio and Carson William all landed a place on the squad, earning Honorable mention status. “It was very satisfying to hear from other coaches, how they looked at our team this year,” said Rams coach ben Soto. Although Cate finished 4-4, one of the losses came against mojave. mojave eventually went on to win the CIF championship with their closest margin of victory being the two-point win over the Rams earlier in the season. “I was very proud of the young men who were recognized at the (coaches) meeting for their play this year,” added Soto.

Dear BaD CreDit People who need co-signers are not usually good risks. Why does she need one? Two people with bad credit are headed for trouble. Stay out of it and let them sort it out. If he wants to sign and the creditor allows it, tell him to make sure his name is on the title.

Dear Donnie, My daughter’s boyfriend just traded his truck for a motorcycle. He lives in Goleta and they used to go to Ojai, Oxnard, Santa Barbara, even Hollywood, back to Goleta and all over. I‘m assuming they will still want to. I worry, especially at night. She is 25, still in school and lives at home. How can I stop worrying?

SigneD, WorrieD mom Dear WorrieD mom, I’d worry too, so I don’t know how much help I’ll be. Check out the young man’s driving record. Ask your daughter to wait until he is more proficient on the motorcycle before they go on long rides.

Also she can offer to use her car. When they are on the bike, be sure they wear good helmets, heavy clothing and reflective safety trim. The freeway lane splitting, which is legal, looks dangerous to me. Have a heart-to-heart talk with both of them about your concerns.

Dear Donnie, My neighbor wants to rent her house to someone who will operate a senior care home. None of us in the neighborhood like the idea. This is a single-family neighborhood and we don’t want a commercial business here. How can we stop it?

Dear not in my BaCkyarD, You can’t stop it. It is licensed by the state and regulated by social services. The homes are limited to six residents. Assisted living is legal in all neighborhoods.

There is one in my neighborhood, and it does not bother anyone. The residents are very nice, quiet and seem well cared for.

Guests or staff parking is not a problem either. Welcome your new neighbors.

Laws may change soon so make him promise to check out affordable coverage.

I would never stand in the way of her chosen path to God, but I would like to be able to include her in family get-togethers. I just don’t know how. Any suggestions?

A few churches regard all holidays as pagan and not supported by the bible. Others are non-Christian and don’t celebrate Christ’s birth, but enjoy other aspects of the holidays. Talk to her and tell her how much it means to you to have the family around and then ask how to include her without violating any of her new beliefs. Depending on how big the rest of the family is and how far they come for the holidays, I’m sure she will want to spend time with her family. Do gift exchanges and other customs when she is not around. Enjoy each other.

Amateur winemaker shares knowledge

Joe Weiland of the Santa Barbara Sunrise Rotary Club recently visited the Carpinteria Morning Club to talk about the joys of making wine. Weiland’s day job is financial planning, but his after work passions run to the reds and whites. Several years ago, at the suggestion of a friend, he started buying grapes from Lafond and other producers and making wine in small batches. In a nutshell, he said, pick a price point that you are comfortable with because there are great wines at virtually every price. Then, buy a few at your price point, and note what you like. Buy a few more at that point, again noting what you like, and then go back and buy all they have of your favorites.

Beth and Matt Thomas recently traveled to the Big Apple to see “The Cave: A Folk Opera,” an award-winning original musical written by their daughter Melanie (center). The show appeared for a successful two-week run at the Access Theatre on Broadway Avenue. Melanie, who now lives in Brooklyn, began performing in shows at the age of 5 while involved in Girl’s Inc. of Carpinteria’s Drama Program under the direction of Asa Olsson. Melanie is looking forward to coming home to Carpinteria for a holiday vacation.

Diana Andonian (right) recently took a trip to Spain and Southern France with her good friend and former Santa Barbara resident Pamela Lewis (Santrizos). The two posed with the CVN before Carcassonne, a medieval fortress that was restored in 1853 and added to the list of Unesco World Heritage Sites in 1997. The Romans fortified the hilltop around 100 B.C., and Carcassonne has a rich history as a border fortress between France and Aragon for many centuries. It has two outer walls and 53 towers. Andonian spent three weeks visiting Andorra, Mirepoix, Girone, Colliere, Barcelona, Madrid and Lewis’ home in Vinaros, Spain.

Spirit parade heralds holidays Photos by Robin KaRlsson

New entries upped the excitement level at the Dec. 10 Holiday Spirit Parade, but many parade goers couldn’t help but feel the loss of Grand Marshal Nilo Fanucchi.

The longtime parade announcer, who was to be honored for his many years of community service, passed away that morning after an extended illness. David Powdrell drove a red convertible BMW along the parade route with an empty passenger seat to serve as a reminder of Fanucchi’s absence.
