These common resolutions all got checked off for the 80 folks who participated in the First Day Hike from Carpinteria State Beach to Rincon and back on Jan. 1. Led by State Beach Interpretive Specialist Leanne Roth, the annual walk has gained popularity since its inception four years ago. 8 ways to make resolutions stick SUBMITTED BY MONTECITO FAMILY YMCA

Making resolutions is a tradition for millions of Americans.

But while choosing a resolution is easy, sticking to it can be impossible. A 2014 YMCA survey found that less than a quarter of respondents kept their resolutions.

Many (71 percent) tried, but stated that they fell short of their goals, while 40 percent confessed they gave up within the first few months, even weeks, of the New Year.

This year, the Montecito Family YMCA is encouraging community members to give their New Year’s resolutions a boost by creating smaller, more manageable goals that can lead to success with a larger one.

Below are eight tips the Montecito Family YMCA recommends to help 2017 New Year’s resolutions stick.

Start small and be realistic. “Getting healthy” is not a goal—it’s too broad.

Break big resolutions into small, achievable goals. Instead of cutting chocolate out of your diet for good, vow to only have it a few times a week. Or trade your two sodas a day for one soda and a glass of water. Making resolutions that you can keep and are practical will be more manageable and rewarding.

Be positive. Reframing your goals in a positive light can help you stick to them.

For example, if you want to limit screen time, replace it with something positive like volunteering or setting special time aside for family. Don’t think about what you are missing, but rather what you are gaining.

Take it one step at a time. Trying to change too many habits at once can easily lead to frustration. Instead of a New Year’s resolution, make a new month resolution. Focus on that one change for the month, and add another (small) change when the new month rolls around.

Choose a facility that focuses on a holistic approach to health. When it comes to adding healthy behaviors, like increasing physical activity, it’s important to find a facility that keeps you motivated. Before committing to a membership, take a tour

of local gyms to find the best fit for you.

Your facility should not be just a gym, but a community that offers more health, more hope and more opportunity.

Ask for support. Let your family and friends know about your resolution and ask them to support you in keeping your goals. Real friends won’t try to tempt you to give up and they can help keep you accountable. If you feel overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to accept help from those who care about you.

Buddy up. It’s easier to stick to your resolutions if you have a partner or friend working toward similar goals. Team up with someone to set your 2017 goals and help each other establish a game plan dedicated to achieving them. Set specific check-ins to help each other out of slumps and to cheer each other during the high points.

Track progress and reward yourself.

Keeping track of small accomplishments will help keep you motivated. Celebrate those successes by treating yourself to something that doesn’t contradict your resolution. For example, reward yourself with new work out attire or by going on a day trip with a friend.

Learn from the process. There are no quick fixes in making major lifestyle changes. Correcting long-ingrained bad habits takes time. Don’t get discouraged by setbacks. If you slip up on a resolution, accept it as part of the learning process and start fresh each day. Missteps do not mean you have to give up.

The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed new board members Doug Madey of Procore, and Leo Fortunato of Rabobank, N.A. to the 2017 Chamber Leadership Team. Fortunato is a Carpinteria native with 29 years of banking experience. He is a member of the Car- Leo Fortunato Doug Madey of pinteria Lions Club and a past president of Rabobank is Procore enjoys of the California Avocado Festival where a Carpinteria riding his bike he served as a board member for seven and surfing.

Gloger girls recognized for bravery

In front of dozens of friends, family members and neighbors on Jan. 2, Ruby Gloger received a medal of bravery from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department for remaining calm and collected after her mother suffered a stroke during a walk on the Carpinteria Bluffs last month. Her two sisters, Iris and Kai, were awarded bravery hearts to help them remain strong and courageous while their mother, Rachel Gloger, recovers from her stroke and the surgery that followed on Jan. 3.

The Glogers’ neighbor, Carol Tokar, also helped Rachel get home after the incident on the bluffs. During the award ceremony, Tokar described Ruby’s impressive composure during the frightening event. “She was calm, and I know her calmness helped her mother,” Tokar said. “Ruby was way braver than any 11-year-old I’ve ever met.”

Rachel’s husband, Barnaby Gloger, reported that her surgery this week was a success and she is recovering well. He expects a hospital discharge early next week. The healing process is slow, he said, and Rachel “will continue to need to rest for a month or two and slowly integrate back into her full life.”

Council to study capital improvement needs

The Carpinteria City Council will pick up a discussion started last month about capital improvement projects at a special study session scheduled to lead into the regular meeting on Monday, Jan. 9. The study session begins at 3 p.m., and the regular meeting will take place at the regular time, 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. The regular meeting agenda includes recognition of the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce Merit Award winners, selection of council representatives to committees, a comment letter to the California Coastal Commission in response to Venoco Pier repairs and an engineering services contract for Rincon Trail. GranVida welcomes first residents this month

GranVida, Carpinteria’s first and only senior living and memory care community, will welcome its first residents later this month.

“The name is Spanish for ‘great life,’” explained GranVida’s executive director, Catherine Lee. “Carp is a small town that provides a great life, and we’re excited to be part of the community.” As per the mission statement: GranVida seeks to enhance the independence, well-being and security of older people through the provision of housing, health care and supportive services.

While the staff is thoroughly trained to provide health care and supportive services, they are also dedicated to respecting residents’ independence. “We see our residents as adults and choose to treat them as such,” explained Lee. “We’ll work closely with residents to meet their personal needs, but we aren’t here to tell them when to go to bed or how many servings of ice cream they can eat.”

The GranVida team is trained in “Seniority Spirit,” the code of standards that governs interactions between residents, their families, and the GranVida staff.

“Our motto is: We are exceptional people providing exceptional care and services,” said Lee. “We’re here because we genuinely love older folks.”

Located at 5464 Carpinteria Ave., GranVida makes use of a longstanding building previously occupied by bigname companies like QAD, Venoco and Microsoft. “We like to say that we carved out the inside of the building and put in something so much sweeter,” said Lee. The refurbished building now features 77 housing units and can accommodate up to 85 residents. While units vary in size and layout, all come fully furnished and include a kitchenette and full bathroom.

Beyond housing, GranVida’s interior also features several community and recreation rooms. Residents can enjoy a good book in the library, get pampered at the Bathtique and Beauty Salon, exercise in the fitness room, play board and card games in the activity room, and take classes in the arts and crafts room. In the secure outdoor courtyard, residents can barbecue, play bocce ball or relax by the fireplace. For off-site activities, a private bus will provide safe, easy transportation.

To accommodate residents with memory care needs, one wing of the building is set aside to offer 24-hour support from team members who specialize in meeting Alzheimer’s and dementia-specific needs.

Team members will also work to create close relationships with residents’ family members to show that their loved ones are happy and well cared for. “People with memory problems tend to be pretty happy in their own world—often, it’s the family that’s upset,” explained Lee. “These seniors have the same basic needs as anyone else—life, love and attention.

We help them find that in good food, smiles and hugs.”

Lee believes that Carpinteria is an exceptional location for GranVida. “Of our current 30 applicants, 20 are long-time Carpinteria residents, and five are excited at the prospect of moving back to town.

That really says something about the kind of place Carp is.” The GranVida team looks forward to moving-in their first residents and wishes to thank Carpinteria for welcoming them into the community.

Patricia Elizabeth Brady 10/24/1932 – 12/30/2016

Patricia Elizabeth Brady, age 84, died peacefully on Dec. 30, 2016 surrounded by family. She was born Oct. 24, 1932 in Johannesburg, South Africa, the daughter of Gertrude and Duncan Phyfe. After growing up in New York, she and her husband Malcolm “Mal” Brady, moved to California to start a family. They lived in Carpinteria for 46 years. She is survived by her husband, Mal Brady; her four children, Mary, Nancy, Bill, Emily and seven grandchildren. She was greatly loved.

Patrica “Pat” loved to travel and camp with her friends. She worked as a nurse at Casa Dorinda retirement community in Montecito for 33 years. Not a day went by that she didn’t speak of her gratitude for her life, her friends, her work and her family.

He is survived by his daughter, Ashleigh Cavey of Frazier Park; father and mother, John and Anna Cavey of Frazier Park; paternal grandmother, Rowena Cavey of Middletown, Ohio; sisters, Elizabeth Abshire and husband Aaron of Wasco; Angela Kokkinakis and husband Tommy of Castaic; two nephews, Luke Abshire and Nicholas Kokkinakis and two nieces, Abigail and Kayanna Hope Abshire.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John Evan Cavey, and his maternal grandfather and mother, Lawrence and Elizabeth Kathe.

We will celebrate John’s life on his birthday, Jan. 17, 2017 at 2 p.m. The celebration of his life will be held at Frazier Park Community Center, located at 3800 Park Drive, Frazier Park, CA 93225.

Marc Sullivan 4/4/1966 – 12/21/2016

John Lawrence “Speed Demon” Cavey

On the night of Dec. 19, 2016, John L. Cavey passed away at San Joaquin Hospital in Bakersfield, Calif. John was 46 years old.

John Lawrence “Speed Demon” Cavey was born Jan. 17, 1970, in Dayton Ohio.

He moved to Oklahoma in 1980 where he lived in both Norman and Oklahoma City for the next eight years. Oklahoma wasn’t John’s favorite place because in 1988 he moved to the beach town of Carpinteria, Calif. This town would leave an everlasting imprint on his heart forever. He was a “Warrior” through and through. John attended Carpinteria High School where he was part of a powerful defensive line.

These were the years when Johnny picked up his nickname “Speed Demon.” After high school John went to work in the industry that he would spend the rest of his life pursuing excellence in: pizza. At Rusty’s Pizza Parlor in Carpinteria John started in the position of roll out preparation and after several years, positions and moves he became a partner in his family pizza business in Frazier Park, known as Caveman Cavey’s Pizza, in 1992. John loved creating new pizzas for all to try.

He was a good cook and enjoyed being

Marc Sullivan of Ventura, Calif. was born April 4, 1966 and passed away at the age of 50 on Dec. 21 of 2016. He was the Director of Food Services at Santa Barbara City College, where he worked for nearly 20 years. His parents, Thomas and Brenda Sullivan, who reside in Carpinteria, Calif., are extremely proud of the hardworking and charismatic man Marc became. His brothers, Scott and Todd Sullivan, cherish the childhood memories they have of Marc and his distinctive personality. His children, Tristan, Ben, McKenna, Kierin and Shea, do not have the words to describe how thankful they are for their father and all that he provided. From memories like quadding the silverback dunes in Idaho or boating on Lake Nacimiento in the middle of a rainstorm, to the wisdom he imparted about following their heart rather than trying to change it to please others. He feared many things, but he began to understand in the last years of his life that he was capable of overcoming those fears and accomplishing much more than he thought possible. In his humbleness, Marc was able to reach out and influence people in whatever stage of life they were in—whether that be the pinnacle of their existence or rock bottom. His openness and willingness to share and listen led to healing in not only himself, but in many of those with which he communicated.

He had a gift for people, a passion for his work, and a deep love for his family.

A memorial for Marc will be held on Jan. 14 at the First Baptist Church located at 5026 Foothill Road in Carpinteria.

The service begins at 1 p.m. and will be followed by a reception in the Fireside Room located at the same address. All are welcome to attend the service.

William R.W. Coleman 7/15/1941 – 12/29/2016

Bill Coleman passed away on Dec. 29, 2016 at 6 a.m. at home with his wife, Delia, sons, Abraham and Romeo, his daughter in-law Joy and daughter Ligaya by his side. Bill had been diagnosed with lung cancer in October of this year.

Bill was born William Robert Wood Coleman in Santa Barbara, Calif. on July 15, 1941, to Shirley and Warren Coleman.

He grew up in Mission Canyon with his brother Cole and sister Fredericka, and graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1959.

Soon after graduation he worked at the family business, Coleman Building Materials, and lived in a small adobe in the Mountain Drive Community started

by Bobby and Floppy Hyde, which later became known as “Santa Barbara’s Pioneer Bohemian Community.” Those he met among the group of families on Mountain Drive, and the values he learned there, would be a lasting influence throughout his life. The Mountain Drivers’ sense of community, of living without overly processed food, electronic stimulation and mass consumerism were ideals that he would embody throughout the rest of his life.

His first relationship provided two sons, Basilio and Abraham, and a bridge to the Filipino community, whose culture and values Bill took on wholeheartedly.

It was among the Filipino elders that he learned the value of family and the discipline of farming—two factors that would later shape his life. He discovered the meaning of Sakop (family circle) through the Filipinos and though he was already an avid horticulturalist, it was the Filipino oldtimers, including Lolo Pastor, Claudio Recorba and Federico Talaugan, who taught him their traditional farming methods.

In 1963 Bill bought a piece of land on Gobernador Canyon, in Carpinteria, which would become the home base of the Coleman Family and later Coleman Farms. After two years of letter writing, in 1969 he married the love of his life, Fidela “Delia” Calip. She was the yin to his yang, and her patience and strength helped him realize his dreams. They danced in the moonlight, created fantastic meals, farmed the land and raised their family together. Soon after they married, Romeo was born, followed by Rizal, Santiago and Ligaya. With six children, they had laid the foundation for their ‘Sakop.’

After working at Carpinteria Valley Lumber and farming part time, Bill and Delia decided to become fulltime farmers.

In March of 1979, together with a handful of other farmers, including John Tapia and Randy Wade, he established Santa Barbara’s first certified farmers’ market.

The first markets took place monthly, first at the Mission, then the Santa Barbara County Bowl, and later at the Santa Barbara High School. Then the farmers’ market moved downtown and took place on a weekly basis.

As the years went on, the farmers’ markets increased, as did his involvement in them. He was truly a pioneer in his field, his passion for farming and curiosity always leading him to new discoveries. He

was nominated into Slow Food’s ‘Noah’s Ark’ for his cultivation of amaranth, and was the first farmer in the area to introduce arugula, endive, radicchio, mizuna, broccoli spigarello and many other vegetables and herbs to the local markets. He was not shy to expand beyond the “one variety” norm. He cultivated numerous varieties of everyday herbs such as mint and basil, and had 14 different varieties of lettuce. He pushed the boundaries to grow things that at first many would pass by. He re-introduced native edible greens such as lambsquarters and purslane, and rarities such as Jerusalem artichokes and fenugreek, to the local farmers markets.

As his farm grew, so did his family. He is survived by his wife, Fidela, and his six children and their families: Basilio, his son Alani and wife Sheila; Abraham, his wife Joy, and their children Tesandra and Grant; Romeo, his wife Gillian and their children Lukasz and Isabella; Rizal, his son Codi, his wife Mahana, and their children Owen and Leila; Santiago, his wife Lisa and their children Maria and Amani; and Ligaya, her husband Wolfgang, and their children Sebastian, Camilo and Severin.

Bill was one of a kind. He was a true legend and leaves behind a legacy that will endure for generations to come.

He taught us to open our eyes and introduced us to the world and all it has to offer. He taught us the meaning of family and the importance of our roots.

He left an impact on everyone he met.

His big heart and generosity touched so many—he was able to speak with anyone, and recognized that underneath it all, we are all the same. And it was on that level that he reached out, connected and opened his heart and his home. His door was always open and there was always a place at the table.

Bill had a deftly intelligent sense of humor, lived a fulfilled life, and did not stop short to dance in the moonlight, sing out loud and enjoy every moment of this sacred life. He did not let fear stand in the way of his playful heart nor convention stand in the way of his dreams.

Farewell, Dad, you will be in our hearts forever. We love you and thank you for creating this wonderful Sakop.

A Rosary will be held on Friday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. at Welch-Ryce Haider on 15 East Sola in Santa Barbara, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church,1532 Linden Ave., in Carpinteria.

Lewis Abe

Lewis Abe was born in Los Angeles on March 16, 1922. He attended UCLA and UC Berkeley until the war broke out. While interned at Heart Mountain, Wyo., he was drafted and served in the U.S. Army. Post-war he helped his dad establish Abe Nursery in Gardena. In 1964 he relocated the business to Carpinteria.

He pursued many interests over the years but, most of all, enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Predeceased by his parents and siblings, Lew will be greatly missed by his wife of 65 years, Deana, children, Lisa (Bill) Yee, Nora (Wayne) Shen, Robert and Richard, and grandsons Derek, Philip, Jeff and Colin. We will celebrate Lew’s life on Jan. 21, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Camarillo United Methodist Church, 291 Anacapa Drive, Camarillo. First female water board member retires

When June Van Wingerden reflects on her nearly 20 years as a Carpinteria Valley Water District boardmember, she does it the same way she conducted herself at every board meeting: with a no-nonsense, smart and thoughtful approach, and a slight twinkle in her eyes.

In 1997, Van Wingerden interviewed along with several other candidates and was appointed to fill a vacancy on the board left open by Dick Van Antwerp. “I said, ‘This is my experience, I was raised on a farm with a well, and I guess that was enough experience,” she remembered.

The boys club she joined in the boardroom contained Bob Lieberknecht, Fred Lemere, Matt Roberts and Glen Hickey.

At that point, a woman had never served on the board of the 55-year-old district.

Not one to be intimidated, Van Wingerden said that her gender never mattered to her nor did it seem to matter to anyone else on the board. “I never thought about it, and I don’t think that they ever thought about it,” she said.

She quickly learned just how much there was to learn. A single four-year term is just enough to begin to understand the complicated water works of Carpinteria, she reflected. The district feeds about half its water to agriculture customers and half to municipal customers—an uncommon scenario. Most agricultural communities have separate water districts due to the expense of meeting drinking water standards. Carpinteria serves two types of customers and relies on several sources. The district dips its straw into a rich underground aquifer, pipes in water from Lake Cachuma and pays for a controversially large allotment of State Water.

Understanding water sources, water standards, special district budgets and board bylaws makes the water board a bigger commitment than many realize.

And the Carpinteria Valley Water District’s decision makers have come under fire over the years. Before the drought struck and drove up water prices around the state, CVWD was known as having some of the highest, if not the highest, rates in the state.

The district’s $3 million annual contract for State Water is at least partly to blame. When the community voted for State Water in 1990, Van Wingerden cast a nay vote in the election. “Now in this drought, I’m really glad we have it. I was proven wrong.” The State Water itself hasn’t been crucial, Van Wingerden said, but the pipeline paid for by the State Water Project has been.

To meet drinking water standards, the district completed several capital improvements during Van Wingerden’s tenure—built the Foothill reservoir, covered the Ortega and Carpinteria reservoirs, developed the El Carro well and rehabbed other wells. These kept the water safe to drink but cost millions. Customers grew outraged as year after year the rates rose.

Van Wingerden maintained her cool even when residents lambasted the board over rate hikes. Asked how she weathered those tough times, Van Wingerden

“I will miss June’s active participation. She was always prepared and well versed on all District business. I always found June to be fair and was willing to make the tough decisions in the best interest of the community.”

The only board decision made in 20 years that still rankles Van Wingerden was a debt-financing plan approved a few years ago. Spreading the debt over several decades allowed water rates to remain flat and saddled future customers with responsibility for projects still serving them. But interest rates were higher, and over the life of the loans customers will pay much more. “We would’ve had to raise the rates, but it would have been paid off in six years,” she said. “That was the worst thing we did over my tenure on the board.”

Van Wingerden and her husband, Rene, own Ocean Breeze International, a flower nursery based in Carpinteria.

She provided grower insight throughout her two decades of service, but pension reform was the area she considered her specialty. She holds a math degree from UCSB and spent nine years teaching math at Carpinteria High School. June worked tirelessly to get CVWD to shift away from a pension plan based on the employee’s final year’s salary to one that averaged the last three years of earnings. Savings began immediately and will continue to benefit the district’s budget. After CVWD

changed its approach, the state followed suit with new requirements. “We were just ahead of the game,” June said.

When June decided not to run again for her seat on the board this fall, she did so with the board’s recent history in mind.

Several longtime board members whom June admires lost their seats over the last couple elections as voters sought change.

“Maybe they’re right, and there should be new blood,” she said.

Even without her water board commitment, June is bound to stay busy. She has two granddaughters in Nipomo, and she plans to see them as much as possible.

She also serves as vice president of the California Cut Flower Commission and is an active supporter of Future Farmers of America.

“June was an excellent Water Board Member. She is smart and has a business mind. She has a wonderfully pleasant demeanor that she brought to every meeting. Her contribution to the water board has saved ratepayers money now and for years to come. I wish to extend great thanks.”

The aging mural splashed across the wall by Summerland’s post office is getting a fresh new look thanks to a couple of artistic good Samaritans. The faded sky pops a vivid, eye-catching blue. The mountains have been restored to purple majesty. Now donations and some sweat work are needed to complete the job.

Summerland’s historic mural has long been in need of restoration. The paint is cracked and peeling. Ice plant growing on top of the wall draped the painted sky. In the past, changes of ownership complicated previous attempts to attain a fix-up. So the depiction of life in early Summerland was left to fade slowly away.

Passing the spot regularly, decorative artist Stuart Brandt was disturbed by the giant portrait of neglect in Summerland’s downtown center. He and his friend Bruce Daniels, who is active with Carpinteria Beautiful, contacted Mary Jo Yaeger, chair of the Summerland Citizens Association to see what could be done. With the SCA signed on, they worked with the realtor representing the property owner to secure permission to start the project.

Cleaning, cutting and clipping came first. Bruce Daniels chopped back the ice plant from the wall’s top. The property owner removed a palm tree threatening the wall’s stability. After cleaning, the men sealed the wall with a couple layers of clear coat to stop the peeling. In

the spirit of keeping things local, Stuart is using exterior house paint purchased from Carpinteria Lumber.

The goal is to match paint color with the original as much as possible, a bit of a challenge given the mural’s faded condition. Stuart is asking for early color photographs of the mural to help with the match. Anyone with a color photograph to lend should give him a call at 570-5591.

All work is volunteer, and Stuart hopes to recruit some young people from his church to pitch in. As the project gains more support, the SCA will prepare a work schedule so community volunteers can sign up to help with the painting. In the meantime, anyone anxious to grab a brush, can call Stuart to fix a time to show up.

You don’t have to be an artist to volunteer. When the mural was first created in 1983, the entire community of Summerland took part, and resident Harold Okino even painted the depiction of his own house—the iconic Victorian still standing in the center of town.

Stuart and Bruce started the mural restoration project in the middle of the holidays—a welcome Christmas gift for the community. Stuart is semi-retired from his business in decorative arts—he worked on the restoration of the Mt. Carmel Church and the Marjorie Luke Theater and is still doing touch ups in the Granada Theater, so Summerland is lucky, indeed, to have him take on our mural.

Stuart says he hopes the mural restoration will serve as a catalyst for more local murals, with a goal of involving kids in the painting. Having kids paint big, he says, opens up their peripheral vision, expanding their world beyond electronic gadgets.

Donations have paid for some of the paint so far, but more cash is needed. At 120 feet long, the wall will take a lot of paint. Stuart estimates they will have to raise another $2,000 to cover the cost of paint, brushes and other materials. Big Yellow House gets a new tenant

Belden Fine Art and Antiques has moved into the roomy ground floor of the building we all know as the Big Yel-

low House. The new business completed renovations of the space and moved in last month, staging a soft opening. A grand opening is planned for February.

The latest commercial venture to join Summerland’s antiques row, Belden Fine Art and Antiques specializes in 19th and 20th century European and American art with a focus on impressionist, postimpressionist and modern art. Their 18th and 19th century antiques are also sourced from Europe and America.

I visited Summerland’s newest business last month, and owner Kevin Bagley treated me to a tour of the showroom. The woodwork of the fireplace, with it craftsman tile, has been carefully preserved, along with the other original decorative elements and woodwork of the old home.

The large space exudes an atmosphere of warmth and calm, the antique furniture artfully arranged to give the impression of being in a comfortable home. Off to the side, a long gallery space features the paintings they specialize in.

Belden Fine Arts and Antiques comes to Summerland from Connecticut, where they still maintain an office. The business is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment Sunday and Monday.

Just Folk closes

Dec. 30 marked an end to Just Folk’s nearly 10-year presence in Summerland.

With its impressive collection of American folk and outsider art, the business offered a unique and special experience to visitors. Walking the galleries with their handmade quilts, tools and primitive art was a museum experience.

Just Folk will now be concentrating their sales online, according to Susan Baerwald, co-owner of the business along with Marcy Carsey. The stunning craftsman style building has already been sold, but the next occupant is as yet unknown.

One good thing: Learning from a Stanford study that repeated complaining rewires your brain for negativity, making future complaining more likely. A good reason to aim at constructive thinking, even on dark days.

Echeverria has enforced her final code Longtime city employee witnessed Carpinteria come of age

BY PETER DUGRÉ Silvia Echeverria spins the yarn about her career at the helm of the City of Carpinteria code compliance division like a coming-of-age, feel-good narrative for both employee and city. Initially, she was rejected but fought for the job she came to love. As the city’s first supervisor of its code compliance division, she helped to usher in an era that values uniformity in building, parking and animal codes for the betterment of the city. Now, having put in nearly 30 years with both the city and police department, she’s riding off into the sunset at 65 years old and leaving her division at full maturity.

City Community Development Director Steve Goggia said the experience and personality Echeverria brought to the job will be irreplaceable. Usually if she knocked at a resident’s door, she was the bearer of bad news and issued a citation or warning. Still, she avoided making a lot of enemies. “She had a way of bringing out the best in people even if not under the best circumstance,” said Goggia, whose department oversees the Code Compliance Division.

It all started when she responded to a want ad for the City of Carpinteria Police Department in 1988. The now-defunct PD needed a community service officer to issue parking tickets, track down stray animals and tow vehicles, and the applicant most importantly “must like people,” according to the ad. Echeverria applied but did not get the job.

“I cried and cried,” she said.

Upon the advice of her sister, Echeverria applied with the PD again. Her sister had said, “Take any job and work your way up,” recalled Echeverria. She sought a secretarial position, but this time was seen as overqualified. I said, “So what? I’ll take it.”

Echeverria’s team attitude landed her the job of community service officer, and she kept it until the PD was dissolved in 1992. The City of Carpinteria then contracted law enforcement with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office but needed an in-house code enforcement of-

At that time the workload was enormous because litters of cats or dogs were being transported almost daily to the county. “There were so many, they’d be euthanized by Friday,” Echeverria said.

She commented that the advent of nonprofits like Catalyst for Cats have greatly improved capacity for animal care and availability of spay and neuter education.

Echeverria was fastidious and professional, but she couldn’t do it all. She had 250 open code violation cases, parking tickets to hand out and 25 tows a month.

She needed help and her division of the city eventually grew to its current status of having two officers under the division supervisor, Echeverria.

She attended conferences and sat on the boards of regional and state professional organizations. Echeverria gleaned from other

cities what was best practice for municipal code compliance and brought her knowledge back to Carpinteria. In 1992, building code violations were commonplace, and the city’s mechanism for enforcement was to take individuals to court. Echeverria urged the city council to create its own administrative system for enforcing violations with its

own set of fines.

“I had 250 active cases: building code violations, garage conversions—t hat nature,” she said. When the city began issuing administrative citations, the process was streamlined. It became clear that violations would result in fines without the necessity of going to court.

Echeverria recalls the time of City Manager Paul Marangella as one of professional growth and municipal maturation. Under his watch, the hardscaping downtown on Linden Avenue and the plan to preserve Carpinteria Salt Marsh got under way. “He came in and introduced himself and said, ‘I just got appointed city manager of this tacky little town, and I’m going to turn it around.’”

Marangella’s goal of managing Carpinteria with an eye toward cultivating a cohesive appearance and character for the seaside town merged well with Echeverria’s drive to become an expert in code compliance.

One of Echeverria’s final acts in her career was as a board member for California Association of Code Enforcement Officials.

Along with her colleagues, she helped to create a state standard of certification for city code enforcement officials that became effect Jan. 1, 2017. “I really feel like I came into code enforcement at really exciting time for the profession,” she said.

In retirement, Echeverria said she’ll add to her list of 30 countries she’s already visited and will play piano, hang around with friends and undoubtedly will find a productive hobby behind which she’ll place her deep well of passion.

Artist helps beautify and enrich Carpinteria CVn

mission possible barbara dunlap art and community. History and volunteering. These are threads that intertwine in John Wullbrandt’s busy, fulfilling life.

First, about history: Wullbrandt’s roots run deep in this part of the world. He traces his family to the Chumash and to his first European ancestor, who came to santa Barbara in the late 18th century.

Wullbrandt’s grandmother Claudia Graham was born in Carpinteria, and so was his father, the late Ernest Wullbrandt. His mother, Mary livingston, was born in santa Barbara.

Here’s how Wullbrandt describes the three other elements that mean so much to him: volunteering, art and community.

Q: How did you get involved in volunteer work in Carpinteria? a: I come from a family of volunteers.

My father served on every city council from Carpinteria’s incorporation in 1965 until he died in 1993. He volunteered on the Coastal Commission and many other organizations.

My Grandma Claudia helped established the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History. When I was very young, my parents both volunteered at the fire station four doors from our home on Walnut avenue. I participated in many activities alongside my family members.

Q: After growing up in Carpinteria, you lived several other places before coming back here. Did you volunteer in those communities as well? a: over the years, I found myself becoming part of communities far from home by volunteering. I helped establish art programs in Hawaii, and I worked in community theaters and championed historic preservation in san Francisco.

Q: Since you returned to Carpinteria, you’ve been volunteering at full tilt with organizations such as the Carpinteria Arts Center. What do you do for the center? a: They let me join them in lots of different ways. They always have some fun project going where I can fit in. For instance, one day every summer the Carpinteria arts Center (along with Carpinteria Beautiful and other groups) hosts about six hours of painting for our local teens. I join a good number of dedicated local artists and art enthusiasts who spend the day helping the teens produce a 40-foot-long mural. Working with these fellow artists alongside our younger artists is beyond rewarding.

Q: You’re also active with Carpinteria Beautiful. What kinds of activities do you do?

The film was shown in 2015 in honor of the City of Carpinteria’s 50th anniversary. a: ah, yes, Carpinteria Beautiful. They let me play in their sandbox and try to help keep it clean. They buy me paints and let me paint on walls. They sponsored me in painting our World’s safest Beach mural.

They helped me bring a movie to the Plaza Theater featuring my dad’s historical footage—and so much more. It’s funny to have spent a lifetime in the art world only to be best known by many locals as the Carpinteria Beautiful guy who volunteers to scoop horse droppings in local parades.

Q: You also started the Celebrate Carpinteria Facebook page (found by searching for Celebrate Carpinteria Public Group / Facebook). Please explain what that is. a: This grew out of my effort in 2015

to pull the community together and celebrate the City of Carpinteria’s Golden Jubilee. I try to keep it up to date by posting events that benefit Carpinteria’s many not-for-profit organizations.

Q: Speaking of the World’s Safest Beach mural, you donated your labor for that project. Do you also donate paintings to other causes? a: I give paintings to many local organizations such as the library, Girls Inc., Boys and Girls Club, the Chamber and Howard school. These groups use the paintings as part of their fundraisers.

Q: You volunteer with other organizations as well—for instance, the historical museum. What kinds of activities have you done there? a: When I was a teenager, I helped create the first version of the Chumash display, and I made some of the interior signage that’s still in place. Currently, I play a small role by filling in whenever needed, but I don’t have a specific task.

The museum now runs like a welloiled machine thanks to the irreplaceable Director/Curator David Griggs and his band of dedicated docents and volunteers. If you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and help, I suggest joining the Projects Committee. There are plenty of jobs available from cleaning artifacts to helping facilitate the Museum Marketplace.

Spread across the beach east of the harbor seal rookery, the group enjoys the low tide offerings at one of Carpinteria’s lesser-used beaches.

The annual First Day Hike tradition that started with a small group in 2013 had, by the afternoon of Jan. 1, 2017, officially grown into Carpinteria’s hottest New Year’s Day event. That’s when 80 walkers gathered at Carpinteria State Beach under a bluebird sky and set out for Rincon along the picturesque bluffs. The walkers, 70 of whom call Carpinteria home, descended to the sand at Rincon Beach and trekked back along the shore. The six-mile journey helped to set the tone for a healthy and happy new year.

Warriors take fourth in Mercer Invitational

December 28 - The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team beat Nordhoff, 54-28 on the second day of hosting the Dan Mercer Holiday Invitational Tournament. Senior Monique Sanchez led the Warriors in scoring with 16, her season high. Sanchez’s senior counterparts Juliet Parsons and Harmony Reed pitched in 13 and nine respectively. “We moved the ball well and capitalized on opportunities,” said Carpinteria coach Amy Bryant. Seven of the 11 Warriors scored on the evening with Parson’s 13 points also a season high.

With the win, Carpinteria moved to 2-0 in the tournament and 5-2 overall.

December 29 - With victories over Orcutt and Nordhoff during the first two days of the Dan Mercer Holiday Invitational Tournament, the CHS Warriors took on Westlake in the final game of day three. Although Carpinteria hung around for three quarters, in the end it was the versatile Warriors from Westlake who came away with a 48-37 victory to advance to the championship game against Royal.

The home team pressed the visitors from the start, but Westlake was able to beat Carpinteria down the floor for some easy scores to build a 14-9 lead by the end of the opening quarter. Carpinteria coach Amy Bryant said her team’s defense was “probably what got us tonight ... We needed to be better on defense, faster on defense.”

However, offensively, Carpinteria picked it up in the second quarter, matching the 12 points scored by

the Westlake squad to stay close at halftime, trailing 26 to 21. Senior Harmony Reed scored 10 points in the first half and was strong on the boards, while her senior counterpart Monique Sanchez pitched in six for the Warriors. The duo ended up with 12 and 10 points respectively for the game.

In the third quarter, Carpinteria was able to get some easy baskets off the fast break with yet another senior, Tori Kelley, pulling ahead of the pack on a couple of lay-ins to bring the Warriors within four at 34-30 to start the fourth quarter. Kelley put up six points in the third, totaling nine points for the game.

A pair of Westlake three-pointers early in the fourth quarter by juniors Alexis Tran and Jenna Schramm widened the margin to 41-31 with a little over seven minutes to play. Tran finished with 10 and Schramm tallied nine on the night. “Westlake had a lot of weapons with seven/eight players scoring,” said Bryant.

Carpinteria scored only seven points in the final quarter, on just one field goal. “We struggled to find ‘our game’ tonight on both ends of the floor,” concluded Bryant.

December 30 - In the third-place game, Carpinteria fell to Channel Islands on the final day of the tournament. The Raiders got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 7-0 lead at the 5:35 mark of the opening quarter en route to a 54-29 victory. The Warriors wound up taking fourth place in the tournament.

Jan. 3—The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team beat Bishop Diego by a score of 46-38. Senior Monique Sanchez led the way with 16 points, while her senior counterpart Tori Kelley added 15. “I think the girls did well tonight considering the nerves and pressure that comes with a rivalry game,” said Warriors coach Amy Bryant.

Carpinteria’s current record stands at 6-4, and the team plays at home against Santa Paula tonight, Jan. 5.

Boys basketball

Dec. 28—The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team on day two of the Santa Barbara Tournament lost to Buena, 73-39. “The Warriors came up against a very talented and hot shooting Buena team and weren’t able to match their intensity and execution,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales. “Though the Warriors played hard, they couldn’t get anything consistent going offensively,” added Gonzales. Carpinteria is 8-3 overall and 0-0 in league play.

Boys soccer

Jan. 2—The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team fell to Royal by a score of 4-3. After Royal jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second minute, Alberto Arroyo scored off a corner kick in the 17th minute to even the score. Down 2-1 at the half, the Warriors surrendered two more goals in the 59th and 65th minutes to fall behind 4-1. In the 75th minute Gabriel Barajas scored from outside the 18 with a ball that sailed over the Royal keeper’s reach. Two minutes later, senior Brian Garcia was fouled just outside the 18; as a result, Alberto Arroyo found the back of the net for the second time in the match on a ball that deflected off of a Royal defender to round out the scoring. “Our young men showed great determination and played with guts as they left it all on the line for one another,” said Carpinteria coach Leo Quintero.

Channel Islands junior Sieanna Corral was on fire, scoring six of the game’s first seven points, ending up with 12 in the first quarter to put the Pirates up 25-12. “We had too many turnovers and gave the other team twice as many possessions,” said Bryant of her team’s performance.

Although Carpinteria was able to slow down Corral and Channel Islands in the second quarter, the Warriors had difficulty putting the ball in the basket themselves.

CHS scored five to the Raiders six, and trailed at the half 31-17. “It was hard to get a rhythm going when we couldn’t seem to convert in transition,” said Bryant.

The third quarter was once again a low scoring affair, Channel Islands put 10 on the scoreboard, but Carpinteria could only muster four, three of those on a trey from Reed. The Raiders would take a 41-21 lead into the fourth.

A three from Corral would put the game out of reach at 49-21. The five-foot, seven-inch shooting guard/forward finished the game with 20 points. The Warriors would get eight from Sanchez, who also picked up a few steals on the afternoon.

Reed finished with seven and junior Kayana Diaz knocked down six for Carpinteria.

Royal beat Westlake, 54-39 for the championship of the tourney. The Warriors dropped to 5-4 on the season, and start league play tonight, Jan. 5, hosting Santa Paula with the tipoff at 7 p.m.

Jan. 3—The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team opened Frontier League play with a home win over Nordhoff, 3-1. Down 1-0, Yaneli Silva equaled the score with a goal from about 25 yards out, lofting the ball over their keeper’s head. Elizabeth Estrada followed with a goal from the corner of the 18. The Warriors finished out the scoring with Alejandra Alvarez converting a shot just out of the reach of the Ranger goalkeeper to put Carpinteria up, 3-1. “Ava Gropper was great in the goal for us,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. “Aly Springer also had a very good game as an outside back for us,” he added.

Carpinteria resident Larry Nimmer has made an annual Dance for Peace from Carpinteria to Santa Barbara every New Year’s day for the last eight years, and this year’s undertaking included an eye-catching Alexander Hamilton costume. The Hamilton costume fit nicely into Nimmer’s chosen theme, The Founding Fathers. During the 12-mile dance, Nimmer played the music of the popular musical, “Hamilton,” which Nimmer recently saw performed in New York City. As Nimmer described it, the dance is part concept art, part exercise and part fun. He endeavors to spread goodwill. This year’s dance was dedicated to Nimmer’s new Kickstarter project “Purple Fishing,” which is an online game he’s developing to help Trump supporters and Trump haters to have fun finding common ground. this 1939 auto accident in downtown Carpinteria appears to have involved a handful of young men. the late great Carpinterian John romero told CVN years ago about his relationship with cars as a teen. He lived off of foothill road on a ranch managed by his father. He had permission to drive his parents’ 1937 Chevy to school, and he would often make stops along the way to pick up any gals who needed a ride. romero remembered that guys would meet up with their cars at the gas station on the corner of linden and Carpinteria avenues, where Giovanni’s pizza stands today. it was a hang out spot, romero explained, where you could shoot the breeze or check out what another guy had under the hood of his car.

What’s that in your pocket?

On Dec. 15 at approximately 2:30 a.m. a Sheriff’s deputy observed a black pick-up truck parked in the rear lot of a motel on Via Real with two people sitting inside. When the deputy illuminated the parked truck with his vehicle’s spotlight, a man began exiting the vehicle on the passenger side. The deputy told the man to remain seated inside, and then spoke to the woman in the truck. Asked why they were sitting in the dark at the back of the motel parking lot, the woman told the deputy that they had just arrived and were planning to get a room. But as she spoke, the deputy stated that he rested his hand on the hood of the truck, which was “cold to the touch indicating the truck had not been running for some time.”

The deputy noted that the man and woman were acting “very nervous and talking out of turn while telling (him) conflicting stories.” The deputy asked the woman to step out of the vehicle so he could speak to her without the man listening and/or interrupting. The woman gave consent to the deputy to search her and the truck for weapons or illegal drugs. Upon asking the man to exit the vehicle then patting him down to check for weapons “for officer safety,” the deputy stated that he saw what appeared to be a ripped plastic baggie hanging out of the the front right breast pocket of the man’s jacket.

When asked what was inside the baggie, the man told the deputy that he did not know. The deputy told the man that he found it hard to believe that the man didn’t know what was in his pocket, and then asked the man if he could remove the ripped plastic baggie. The man consented and as the deputy removed the baggie a “large crystalline rock of suspected crystal methamphetamine” fell to the ground. The man then stepped on the rock and made a grinding movement with his foot “in an effort of destroying it,” the deputy reported.

The deputy placed the man in handcuffs and arrested him for possession of a controlled substance and destruction of evidence. Subsequently, the deputy searched the parked truck and found a purse with prescription medicine with the woman’s name on it, as well as a glasses case with a small amount of suspected crystal methamphetamine. The woman was also arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Why yes, I do have a meth pipe

On Dec. 17 at approximately 1 a.m. a deputy entered the parking lot of a motel on Carpinteria Avenue and was nearly hit head on by a blue truck exiting the lot at a high rate of speed. Although the deputy was heading to back up a fellow officer, he turned his vehicle around to follow the blue truck, as another deputy had already responded for back up.

Conducting a traffic stop at Casitas Pass Road and Via Real, the deputy spoke with the driver, a 50-year-old woman from Santa Barbara, and noticed that her pupils “were constricted to 3.5 mm and did not move when (he) shined (his) flashlight into them.” The deputy then asked the woman the last time she used a central nervous system stimulant such as cocaine or methamphetamine. She denied using illegal street drugs, then recanted and stated that she had smoked methamphetamine about two days before.

The deputy asked the woman if she had any narcotics or paraphernalia inside the vehicle, and she told him that she had a meth pipe “secreted in a fast food bag on the floorboard of the vehicle,” the deputy noted. Citing the woman for possession of drug paraphernalia, the deputy released her “from the scene without incident.”

Hard to leave the life

On Dec. 17 at approximately 8:45 a.m., deputies were dispatched to a parked car on Camellia Circle on a report of a man “passed out” inside. The first deputy to arrive found a man asleep in the driver’s seat with the vehicle running. The man had difficulty explaining why he was in the area. When he provided a deputy with his ID, a records check revealed an outstanding warrant for his arrest on drug charges from Ventura County. Ventura County notified the SB Sheriff’s deputies that they would extradite the man.

“Incident” to the arrest, a deputy searched the man and found suspected heroin, heroin paraphernalia and a scale on the man. A search of the vehicle revealed a meth pipe with residue in the driver’s side door, and two Clonazepam pills in the center console. The registered owner of the vehicle lived in Ventura, and said that the man had permission to use her car. The owner stated that she did not know that where were narcotics in her car.

The man being arrested admitted to being the owner of the pills, heroin and paraphernalia, but stated that he did not know whom the meth pipe belonged to. Sheriff’s deputies left the car parked where it was and booked the keys along with the drugs and paraphernalia for evidence, and the owner of the vehicle said she would come get her car with a spare key at a later time.

Just cruising

On Dec. 19 at approximately 11:30 a.m. a deputy was driving westbound on Via Real, and ran a DMV records check on a silver vehicle driving in front of his patrol vehicle. The records check reveled a registration transaction in progress although the vehicle displayed current 2017 tags.

The deputy conducted a traffic stop to investigate a possibly fraudulent display of registration, and the man driving stated that the vehicle belonged to his friend who lives in Isla Vista. As the men handed the deputy their IDs, one of them, a 24-yearold man in the passenger seat, “admitted to being on active probation” the deputy noted. The 39-year-old driver of the vehicle, which the deputy confirmed is owned by the friend named earlier, stated that the owner was asleep in a motel room on Via Real and that he and the passenger had borrowed the car to go cruising.

The deputy stated that the men “appeared very nervous,” and he asked them if there was anything illegal in vehicle.

The men told him that the vehicle did not belong to them so they didn’t know if there was anything illegal in it. The driver offered his consent for the deputy to search the vehicle, the deputy noted, before he had asked for consent. The dispatch office notified the deputy that the driver had an active warrant for his arrest on a possession charge. When another deputy arrived, the men “appeared to become more nervous.” The driver “was chewing his gum with exaggerated movements, and (the passenger) was visibly shaking when I would talk to him,” the deputy wrote. The 24-year-old man told the deputy that he had been warned to stay

out of Carpinteria because a lot of people “go to jail there.” “In addition,” the deputy continued, “(the passenger’s) face began to turn red/flushed.” The deputy noted that he observed “redness start at (the passenger’s) neck and move up his cheeks.”

The deputy called a third, senior deputy for back up and when he arrived, he stood by the passenger side of the vehicle while the reporting deputy approached the driver’s side with another deputy. He asked the driver to exit the vehicle and took him into custody for the misdemeanor warrant. After placing the man in the back of a Sheriff’s vehicle, the reporting deputy returned to the car and opened the passenger-side door to have the passenger exit so he could conduct a search. The deputy reported that he “immediately observed a used glass methamphetamine pipe on the floorboard between the seat and the door. The pipe was in plain view,” the deputy added, “and (the passenger) would have seen it when entering the vehicle.” The deputy took the passenger into custody for possession of drug paraphernalia.

After “securing the man” in the back seat of his patrol car with the driver who had already been arrested, the deputy looked at the meth pipe and observed that the “bowl of the pipe contained a useable amount of

methamphetamine.” The deputy noted that “it is common for narcotic users to place a larger amount of drugs in the bowl than they intend to immediately use. Once the drug has cooled down in the pipe,” the deputy continued, “it solidifies and sticks to the glass in the bowl. The user will then at a later time be able to heat the bowl and smoke more of the drug.”

The senior deputy responded to the motel room to confirm that the men had been allowed to have the vehicle, and then gave the man a ride to the location where his car had been pulled over so that he could retrieve it rather than having it towed away. The two men who borrowed the vehicle were transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

THE WRITE PRACTICE JOE BUNTING Whether you’re writing a book or a blog post, it’s tempting to just dive into your writing project. However, you will likely save yourself time and create a better end product if you settle on a solid premise before you start writing.

What is a premise?

“Norwegian by Night” by Derek Miller

Sheldon Horowitz is an unlikely hero, an 82-year-old widower suffering from dementia (or is he?). Haunted by his Korean War experiences and his son’s death in Vietnam, which he blames himself for, Sheldon has moved to Norway to live with his granddaughter and her Norwegian husband. On hearing a violent argument outside his family’s Oslo apartment, Sheldon opens his door to a Slavic-looking woman and her small son to offer them refuge from an assailant.

The assailant kills the mother, and now Sheldon is on the run with the boy, who doesn’t speak English. The old man talks his way into a pricey hotel, gives the boy a makeover to disguise him, steals a boat and then a tractor and heads to his granddaughter’s summer home. In close pursuit are the killer, an Albanian war criminal, and tough-minded Chief Inspector Sigrid Ødegård. In case this sounds like another dark, Scandinavian, political/crime thriller, it isn’t. The author has managed to imbue the story with the absurd comedy of growing old.

“The Language of Flowers”

The Carpinteria Library Book Club will dedicate its Jan. 18 meeting to discussing Vanessa Diffenbaugh’s New York Times bestseller “The Language of Flowers.”

Protagonist Victoria Jones spent her childhood in the foster care system and bears the emotional scars of an upbringing lacking love and consistency. At 18, her connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings. The language of the flowers and the arrival of a mysterious stranger spark questions about how to steer adulthood away from the pain of childhood—until a secret from her past returns to haunt her. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of a premise is: “A proposition supporting or helping to support a conclusion,” while Wikipedia defines a premise as, “The fundamental concept that drives the plot.”

As you can see, there are different definitions for premise, and with that in mind, let’s take a look at how fiction and nonfiction writers should write their premises.

Premise for fiction writers

If you’re writing fiction, your premise needs to contain three things: The protagonist The setting The problem the protagonist faces One effective trick for defining a premise is to write a one-sentence lo-

gline that will become the foundation of your story. The logline is a tool used primarily by screenwriters, but it can be very helpful if you’re writing a novel or a short story.

Premise for nonfiction writers

For nonfiction writers, your premise is a two- to three-sentence summary of the main argument or narrative of the book. Here’s what Michael Hyatt says in his guide “Writing a Winning NonFiction Book Proposal”: “The premise is a two- or threesentence statement of the book’s basic concept or thesis. Usually, it identifies the need and then proposes a solution.”

Since this is the first part of every book proposal, it’s important to get it right. For example, for the last month I’ve been working and re-working a proposal for a book that I’m ghostwriting, trying to cast the right vision for our future book.

What is your premise?

Do you want to write a book, but aren’t sure where to start? Are you working on a book now and need some help refocusing?

Regardless of where you are in the process, it’s a good idea to spend some time writing a solid premise. You wouldn’t build a house without laying a strong foundation. In the same way, don’t start writing without writing a strong premise.

It might feel like an unnecessary step, but it will save you a lot of time in the long run. Give it a try!

Sheila Tenold visited Port Lockroy, Antarctica and brought a copy of Coastal View News to share in the adventure. Maintained by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust, Port Lockroy is the site of more than 100 years of British maritime history with original buildings still in use today during the summer months. Gentoo penguins provide Antarctic charm, and Tenold reports that mail sent from the station there is postmarked from Antarctica. The handy crew aboard the Hurtigruten MS Fram maneuvered a small boat through ice-jammed waters to open a path for their passengers to land, but they arrived after 10 p.m.— twilight in the Antarctic summer—which made shopping in the small gift store a challenging experience.
