Sea glass fest moves to SB

The Carpinteria Sea Glass Festival in 2015 could have been the first and only. Festival organizers announced that this year’s Sea Glass and Ocean Arts Festival on Aug. 27 and 28 will be held at Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara. Organizers said Warren Hall at the showgrounds is a larger space, providing for larger exhibits and greater attendance. Early bird admission and shopping is set for Saturday, Aug. 27 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. with a fee of $15. General admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. is $5 per person. Children 12 and under will be free when accompanied by an adult.

The festival will feature dozens of juried vendors selling original sea glass and ocean-themed art. In addition, there will be speakers and a “Best Beach Glass Find” contest. Interested sea glass and ocean arts vendors can find more details online at santabarbaraseaglassandoceanartsfestival.com.

Beware of fire inspection fraud

Santa Barbara County fire fighting agencies have jointly released a warning about fire inspection scams. They are raising awareness of numerous reports of individuals entering businesses offering to perform fire inspection surveys for a fee. Schemes used include using high-pressure sales tactics and/or posing as members, or contracted members, of the fire department to convince business owners to buy their services.

According to a joint agency press release: “It is important to understand that no fire departments within Santa Barbara County, including local jurisdictions, contract with any company or individuals for fire inspection services. Additionally, no fire department will ever ask for money up front.”

Fire appliances must be serviced on a regular basis, but local fire departments do not recommend companies. A service company should not be allowed to perform a service that has not been requested. For further information, contact Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District at 684 4591.

Sheriff’s Office warns of phone scam

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has fielded a high volume of phone scam complaints related to tax season. In this particular scam, the caller claims to be from the Internal Revenue Service or United States Department of the Treasury and informs the victims that they owe an outstanding tax bill. The scammer then tries to con the targeted victim into sending cash through a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. They may also leave urgent callback requests through “robo-calls” or via a “phishing” e-mail. The scammers can use caller ID spoofing to make it look as if the call is coming from the IRS or another agency.

They may also use IRS titles, or fake badge numbers and use the victim’s name, address and other personal information to make the call sound official.

The IRS does not call about outstanding tax bills or require payment by pre-paid debit cards, nor does it ask for credit card numbers over the phone or threaten arrest by local law enforcement.

To report crimes of this nature, contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at (800) 366-4484 or use the IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting web page.

The Aliso School playground was all jump rope and smiles last week as the school participated in the Jump for Heart event benefiting the American Heart Association. This month, during Pe and Monday Morning Movement, students have learned heart-healthy practices such as limiting sodium intake, daily exercise, regular water consumption, nutritious meals including fruits and vegetables and sufficient sleep. Principal Holly Minear said volunteers including Pe teacher Jacque Geary organized the entire event.

Summerland School students enrolled in the STAR Nova Rock Star afterschool program recently brought their musical act to the big stage at the Wiltern Theater in Hollywood. Principal Holly Minear stated that the dedicated students spent hours practicing at home ahead of their performance. Dual immersion teeters on danger

Does anyone remember one of the disastrous failures of public education in the last century? Unless there is a mandated minimum number of English speaking (say 30 percent) students in these Dual Immersion classes that begin and stay with the class we will fail large portions of this generation again.

I hope that the CUSD Board of Education will not move forward with a dual language immersion program. Doing so would be a disservice to our young people. This program is just another attempt to bring back bilingual education, which California voters chose to outlaw in 1998. Even the huge statewide bureaucracy that had grown extremely powerful was unable to explain why, despite the expenditure of millions of dollars, test scores proved that the program did little good. I remember numerous times over the years, when test scores again and again proved the failure of the program, the response was always the same, “We just haven’t figured out the right way to do it yet.” As a retired teacher (38 years) I know firsthand how ridiculous this comment is.

When standing in front of a classroom full of children, teachers are constantly evaluating their effectiveness. When it becomes obvious that the lesson, as planned, is not achieving the desired result, changes are made immediately until it is clear that the children are learning and understanding the subject matter. This happens dozens of times each and every day. You don’t wait for some state report to tell you that you are not doing your job well.

Throughout my career, I saw children from many different countries enter our schools, often speaking no English. In most cases, no staff member spoke their language. The end result was that these kids were all speaking English well within a few months. Rather than assume that some students will not learn unless we teach them in Spanish, how about treating them with the same expectations we have for others?

Constitution empowers people

I spoke with a young lady in her early 20s the other day who thought “Democratic Socialism” had something to do with social media. To live under our constitutional ideas and to take them so completely for granted that you know nothing about them is utterly sad.

What makes our Constitution unique in all the world? Nothing like it has ever been done before in the history of mankind. The power lies in the idea that people’s rights are granted directly by the creator, not the state, and that the people, then, and only then, grant rights to government. The concept is so simple, yet so very profound.

America’s founders embraced a previously unheard-of political philosophy which held that people are “...endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights...” This was the guiding principle for the new nation and was translated

Last week’s news that the Carpinteria school board has postponed its decision to fund a dual enrollment Spanish immersion program is disappointing. For those who don’t know, the program would start at Canalino School in the fall of 2016 and provide intensive Spanish language education to public school students. The board apparently based its decision on the $50,000 price tag of implementing the program.

Is this really about the cost? Okay, $50,000 is not nothing. But that money would be a down payment on our children’s future in California, a place where Spanish language proficiency will be the key that unlocks doors to jobs, education and greater cultural understanding. The value of that? Priceless. After all, who doesn’t wish they’d picked up Spanish fluency when it still felt as natural as learning to ride a bike or do multiplication tables?

As well, an October 2015 New York Times article states that dual language programs can help combat “school segregation.” As Acting Education Secretary John B. King states in the article, dual enrollment programs can be “a vehicle to increase socioeconomic and racial diversity in schools.” This is a win-win for a stratified public school district whose student body no longer reflects the economic and racial diversity of Carpinteria. Dual enrollment is the carrot this town needs to lure a diverse mix of families back into public schools to learn together.

But is it worth $50,000? Carpinteria can’t afford to say no.

NuSil Technology hosts a STEM Fridays collaboration with girls from Girls Inc.

Girls Inc. seeks community partners

Girls inc. of Carpinteria is launching a Stem Fridays program for kindergarten through fifth-grade girls that will introduce them to activities related to science, technology, engineering and math with hopes of sparking their passion for these fields at a young age.

“We’re dedicated to providing girls with experiences that turn on their minds, get their hands messy, and inspire them to experiment and be creative,” said Victoria Juarez, executive director of Girls Inc. Carpinteria. “Our STEM Fridays program not only introduces girls to STEM professions and careers, but also inspires them to take risks and push past their comfort zones. We hope local businesses will join us in our efforts to prepare this next generation of female leaders in STEM.” STEM Fridays involves groups of approximately 15 girls rotating through four different hands-on stations every 30 minutes, working on or building various, unique projects related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Community partners would be asked to plan and implement four different STEM activities for a total of 60 girls. Girl Scouts think global

Over 200 Girl Scouts from 18 troops—including five troops from Carpinteria—came together on Feb. 19 to share information they gathered up about countries and cultures around the world. The annual event, called Thinking Day, started in 1926, and since then, girls all around the world have celebrated it. The Carpinteria troops selected Australia, Denmark, Egypt, Fiji and Japan. Each Girl Scout troop selected a country to represent, researched it, and shared with other Girl Scouts. Each troop also shared a typical food item from their chosen country and one craft or activity that is native to their country. “It was a great opportunity to learn more about different countries and cultures while having fun,” stated a press release.

Scouts help the hungry

On Feb. 28, the Carpinteria Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts scoured the community for imperishable foods to help restock Carpinteria’s food bank. The boys were able to collect over a half ton of food. Food drive organizers said that local residents are to thank for anther year of the highly successful drive.

Thousands of the loveliest plants on the planet will be at Earl Warren Showgrounds this weekend for the 71st Santa Barbara International Orchid Show. Adult guitar workshop Guitarist Greg LeRoy will teach a 10-week adult workshop on his craft.

U.S. Citizenship Orientation Session In an effort to assist Carpinteria residents to gain citizenship, St. Joseph Catholic Church and Catholic Charities is launching a new U.S. Citizenship Orientation program on Sunday, March 6 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The first session will provide information on the program designed to help people determine whether they are eligible to become citizens and prepares them for the citizenship path. A deputy followed a vehicle into a Carpinteria Avenue motel parking lot on Feb. 16 because its windows were too tinted, and the officer discovered why the vehicle occupants had something to hide behind their darkened windows.

The driver, a 29-year-old man, and passenger, a 30-year-old woman, had exited the vehicle by the time the deputy pulled in behind them. The officer asked them for ID. The man said he had none but the woman presented hers. Asked if his was misplaced or suspended, the man, who had been behind the wheel, issued his name and admitted to operating on a suspended license. The officer asked permission to search the vehicle, but the couple said no. He then insisted, saying he had to look in the vehicle in order to locate any identifying documents for the man. The officer instead found meth and a meth pipe. Both the man and woman were arrested.

“Government taxes”

A man selling a motorcycle online was lured by the promise of $8,500 but ended up being swindled for $600. A potential buyer from Florida contacted the seller and asked him to wire $600 to cover shipping costs. The buyer would reimburse the $600 with his total payment for the bike via PayPal. Once that initial transaction cleared, the buyer came asking for more, the second time for $730 to cover “government taxes.” Both the awkward word usage and double dipping tipped off the seller that he was being hoodwinked, so he contacted sheriff’s deputies. There were no suspects in the scam.

Deputies received a call on Feb. 17 that a woman was ransacking vehicles in broad daylight at a Via Real business.

When deputies arrived, the suspect had headed down the road, so deputies combed the area looking for a reportedly

intoxicated 52-year-old woman whose pants kept coming down. Deputies saw a truck in a parking lot with its parking lights on and a woman in the cab. She was rifling through things, so a deputy popped open the door, at which point the woman allegedly began swinging.

An arm grab and yank from the officer had her on the ground and in handcuffs quickly after the encounter began. The deputy discovered a tall can of Pabst Blue Ribbon and small bottle of Taaka vodka in the truck where the woman had been sitting. She informed the officer that she was looking into purchasing the truck.

A search of her person revealed $2 and a gold crucifix, both of which were returned to vehicle owners from the reporting business. She was arrested.

A woman who runs a store that cashes payroll checks on Carpinteria Avenue reported on Feb. 18 that six people with fraudulent checks conspired to cash them over several days at her store. She cashed the first two, but flagged the name of the company listed on both nearly $400 checks as suspicious. Two days later another man showed up with a paycheck from a similarly mysterious company, so she did an internet search that came up blank. She told the man with the check that she couldn’t cash it until the bank cleared it. He left with the check. She then discovered that the original two didn’t clear and weren’t linked to a real bank account. Two days later, a man and woman showed up with two checks from the original fraudulent company, so she called law enforcement. The owner followed them out and down the road but lost them. She gave officers the names of all the people who had come in and provided IDs along with the allegedly fraudulent checks. Deputies did not have matches for any of the alleged frauds.

Local couple launches Epic SUP Adventure

a chance encounter at Jelly bowl sparked a romance that would lead to a quite literal epic adventure. austin Haggerty and Maegan boyce are two locals who have turned an interest in ocean exploration into a lifestyle and business initiative known as Epic sUP adventure. boyce grew up near First beach and learned to swim at age 5 under the tutelage of her brother. Haggerty recalls his first memories as a mere 4-year-old, playing in the waves at second beach. Decades later, the two would meet through Haggerty’s sister on the shores of Carpinteria, fall in love and find their way into the world of small business owning and stand up paddling.

Their approach to sUP gives paddlers—experienced and beginners alike— the opportunity to explore the santa barbara coast in expansive ways. Due to their size, shape and mobility, SUP boards allow travel through shallow waters and other areas unreachable by most water craft. The learning curve is friendly with many beginners grasping the technique in a day.

Epic sUP’s launch sites vary. “our favorite beaches really depend on the day. Wind and waves will greatly affect visibility into the water and also how close you can safely navigate the shallows,” Haggerty and Boyce explain.

Fourth beach in Carpinteria near the reef is a nice paddle with many opportunities to experience sea life, they said. “If the waves are manageable, Tarpits to Rincon is a great paddle. it is one of the most beautiful stretches of our coastline. You’ll see lots of seals.”

Chance encounters with nature are many and happen every trip. For example, the couple recounted a story of a memorable trek with two semi-experienced women paddlers from boston.

“We set out at Refugio state Park and paddled to El Capitan, rounding the point for our lunch break,” Haggerty explained. “When we paddled back to the beach at the tip of El Cap, there was a pod of dolphins that started swimming with us and then back and forth right under our boards and started playing as if displaying their talents in the water,” he continued. “Needless to say, it was a life changing experience for them, and it was really exciting to feed off of that kind of joy.”

Preparation for a sUP expedition is crucial for both safety and a good time, said Haggerty and boyce. in addition to considering the weather, paddlers should become familiar with wind patterns on the channel. They suggest looking for fog banks before committing to an offshore journey. Mariner laws and boating safety applies when you venture past the surf break as the sUP board is then identified as a vessel and is held to the same standards and regulation as others. Haggerty and boyce bring VHF (Very High Frequency) marine two-way radios, wear leashes and personal floatation devices on journeys. sun protection is heavily advised and bringing snacks for longer adventures is also recommended. boyce credits the Women’s Economic Venture (WEV) for helping their business launch. The couple said Greece would be a dream SUP destination, but expanding their business to enhance more extensive adventures is also at the top of the list.

“In five years, we hope to be leading excursions to the Channel Islands, doing overnight camping trips via SUP, and possibly doing remote location traveling expeditions up into northern California and Oregon inlets and waterways.”

Porch shows Wings and the Deep Blue Sea

Porch is opening up its walls to painter Jessika Cardinahl, a fine artist who will show a collection of her works titled “Wings and the Deep Blue Sea.” The home and garden store, 3823 Santa Claus Lane, will host an artist reception on Saturday, March 5, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Cardinahl will be on hand along with small bites and beverages. Following her early educational pursuits in graphic design at the Fachoberschule für Graphik und Gestaltung in Hamburg, Germany, Cardinahl continued her studies at the Parson School of Design and at the UCLA School of Fine Art.

Plaza Theater elects new boardmembers

The Plaza Playhouse Theater has seated its 2016-2018 Board of Directors and also appointed an Emeritus Board. The board consists of Hanne Pedersen, President; Mike Lazaro, Vice President; Jim Campos, Secretary; and Asa Olsson, Treasurer. Plaza Playhouse Theater’s Improv Workshop enters fifth year

Beginning its fifth year, Plaza Playhouse Theater’s Improv Workshop kicks off its next 8-week session on March 15. Under the direction of Tom Mueller, the class meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the theater’s stage in downtown Carpinteria. Kindermusik announces music train

For the fifth year running, Kindermusik with Kathy will host a Musical Train Trip on board Amtrak. The round trip from Santa Barbara to Carpinteria and back will board on Saturday, April 9, at 9 a.m. infants, children and family members of all ages join to sing train traveling songs and will be accompanied by musicians playing guitar, banjo and fiddle. The train leaves Santa Barbara at 9:22 a.m., but guests must arrive no later than 9 a.m., and will drop off in Carpinteria for an hour and a half stop. The group will go to the beach, park, island Brewing Company or The Spot. The return northbound train departs at 11:21 a.m. and arrives back in Santa Barbara at 11:35 a.m.

Tickets must be purchased at any Kindermusik with Kathy & Friends studio in SB, Goleta or Carpinteria. According to Kindermusik, the event fills up fast. Cooney will have a wealth of experience on the mound this year, spearheaded by left-handed senior Diego Contreras, and a pair of junior righties: Sal Delgado and David Martinez. The Warriors will also call on another pair of lefties, Warren and freshman Chase Mayer, along with right-handers Gordon and junior Tony Vega to pitch.

Sophomore Toby Spach will help handle the pitching staff at catcher. Up the middle, Carpinteria defensively will have Spach and Vega, at shortstop and at second, respectively. Contreras, Delgado and Gordon will share time anchoring center field. Cooney figures to fill many of the positions by committee, getting contributions from the entire roster. “Every single player has a significant role as the high school season is an intense grind,” he added in what looks to be a highly competitive TriValley League.

“St. Bonaventure and Grace Brethren are loaded with talent and there were some coaching changes at four schools which will bring in new and exciting energy,” said Cooney, expecting Nordhoff, Malibu, Bishop Diego and Santa Clara to be right in the mix.

Carpinteria will open Saturday, March 5 with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at home at Calderwood Field.

Warrior baseball beats alumni team

The upcoming Cate School baseball season could be characterized as a series of firsts, as the Rams prepare for Frontier League play once again. There are a couple of first year players that figure to make an impact right away. New student Bryce Huerta joins the team as a junior, and will most likely be at first base. Versatile freshman Jack Deardorff is slated to start at second base but could see some time at shortstop. “Even though he did play football and soccer, baseball is his thing,” said Cate coach Ben Soto of the young man who recently played for the Santa Barbara Junior Foresters.

Longtime members of the Condor League, the Rams, playing in their second year in the Frontier League, will for the first time have the luxury of having a couple of all-league players returning to the squad: junior pitcher/outfielder Joel Revo, who made first team All-Frontier, and senior catcher Jake Dexter-Meldrum, who was named to the second team. Revo will be the team’s number one hurler, and DexterMeldrum may see some time on the mound also.

With the suspension of the Cate girls softball program, the Rams for the first time in Soto’s tenure will have a couple of former softball players also join the team.

Sophomores Emma Carrillo-Cordova and Emily Burns will be joined by one of their former softball coaches Matt Drew, who will fill the role of assistant coach, accompanied by the coach’s son, Dave Soto. “They’ve gotten no favors; they’ve more than held their own,” said Soto of the two potential trailblazers.

For the fourth consecutive year, Cate will count on senior Dean Smith to play center field, pitch and most likely catch, with junior Dylan Ell anchoring the middle at shortstop and pitching as well. Narrowly missing a spot in the playoffs last year, the Rams primary focus will be to get to the postseason, which would be a first for the school coming out of the Frontier League.

The 2016 edition of the Carpinteria High School baseball team faced a galaxy of stars from the storied history of Warrior Baseball on Saturday, Feb. 27 and snuck away with a 7-1 win. The stars from the alumni roster featured players from the 1974 CIF Champions, the 2000 CIF runners up, the 2008 league champions and top players from the teams in between. The current Carpinteria squad scored early and held on as the alumni threatened in the late innings and scored in their final at bat.

The best thing about the day is that all the participants and fans connect through a common thread,� said Warrior coach Pat Cooney. The span of time from the 1950’s to the 2000’s is bridged by stories and memories of their days of high school baseball. “The current Warriors were interested in my comments like, ‘He hit a home run over the third fence that hooked inside the right field pole to beat Bishop on a windy day, or that guy looks awkward but he made every play on the way to the CIF finals, or this guy could throw the ball out of the park,’” added Cooney. The game is an important part of the 2016 preparation for regular season action, which begins on Saturday, March 5 at home versus Santa Ynez at Calderwood Field.

Feb. 25 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team got its feet wet in a non-league match losing to Pacifica of Oxnard, 12-6. The Warriors’ number-two singles player Jeremy Saito swept his three sets and dueled with the Tritons number-one player before finally overtaking him at 3-4 to close it out 6-4. In doubles, Carpinteria’s number-two team of Sam Truax and Jacob Ascencio started off a little rough in the first round 0-3, but then reeled off six straight games to win the set. “We have a few athletic freshmen who, if they stay focused enough, could turn out to be very solid players down the road,” said Warrior coach Charles Bryant. “And some of our returners, Franky Hall and Jacques Jougla, really stepped up their game as well,” added Bryant.

March 1 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team suffered its third straight non-league loss, dropping an 11-7 decision to Nordhoff. The Warriors were led by their number-two doubles team of Jacob Ascencio and Sam Truax who swept their three sets. Carpinteria’s number-three doubles team, Myles Morgan and Bryan Taira won two of their three sets with their only loss being a 4-6 setback. Number-one doubles team Luke and Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson also picked up a doubles win. In singles, the Warriors ran into a buzz-saw as their number-one player did not drop a game and our only point came from Jeremy Saito who beat their number-two.

March 1 – The Cate School boys tennis team lost its second match of the season to Dos Pueblos 11-7 at home up on the mesa. Rams number-one singles player, junior Kevin Ha, led the Rams with a sweep at singles losing only three games in his three sets. Rounding out the day for Cate, number-two singles player sophomore Joseph Thomassen, number-three singles player junior Mason Mackall, the number-one doubles team of senior captain Michael Nettesheim and junior Christian Herman and the number-three doubles team of sophomore Charlie Morris and freshman Brad Gordon each won one set. The Rams start league play on Thursday March 3 at St. Bonaventure.

It’s that simple.

Imagine your home without a sofa or TV. What if you stood rather than sat at your desk?

Studies have shown that staying on your feet can provide you with a sustained metabolic boost. Sofas are the new cigarettes. Granted, maintaining your biped status will not prove beneficial with significant weight-loss goals, but instead you will build physical endurance so that you can embark on an exercise program without feeling like you’ve just awakened from a 30-year nap.

Enough of the chatter; let’s get down to brass tacks and get you thinking progressively about your wellness goals. These goals should include learning about your physiology. Be able to explain what happens when you’re active. It’s time to promote curiosity about physicality without evoking a horrific episode from seventh-grade P.E. The first step is to acknowledge that it took you years to look and feel like your current state. Simply put, if you are to endure and grow, you must recognize that there is no magic bullet to transport your body back to that 20-something physique.

Instead, you need to start slowly and set goals. Your goals should include not only short-term milestones but also a long-

term plan with measurable outcomes.

Your second step is to start moving and work progressively. I refer to a progressive approach because even though you might start with a walking regimen, your body will quickly acclimate to that activity and your conditioning program will stall, and you’ll feel defeated, become bored and find yourself ready to throw in the sweat towel. Therefore, make a list of activities you might be interested in and rate them according to relative difficulty and interest, then apply these activities to your plan’s goals. Fun activities are a sure-fire way to keep your road to wellness advancing. Backpacking is an example of an amazing activity that gets you outside while pushing you beyond a level of comfort. Keep in mind this very important rule: In order to revitalize your body and promote physical change, you must work at a level that is slightly beyond comfortable. This means that your heart rate might be a bit elevated, your muscles might be feeling tight and your brain’s inner voice might be screaming “Stop.” Your brain will suggest rest long before you actually need it, so push yourself within reason and again, work progressively. I can’t underscore this concept enough.

Remember, more is not necessarily better. If you are ever feeling queasy or lightheaded, rest. It is also very important to stay hydrated. Maintain an evaluative state to gauge your ability to continue.

The body heals, grows and advances from rest. Therefore, if you feel like you’ve sufficiently taxed your system, it’s time for prolonged rest.

Speaking of hydration, drink water to keep your cells operational. Dehydration will derail your ability to complete your activity. A simple guideline is to work up to half your weight in ounces of water and you’ll be good to go. If math problems

One more thing about water, if you’re trying to lose weight, gain muscle or create happy mitochondria, you must stay hydrated. Dehydration will slow your cellular function resulting in a diminished metabolic rate. If you’re consuming a high-protein diet, it’s a good idea to flush your system to keep your filtering organs functioning and healthy.

With these two steps in play, now you can work toward the one thing that will motivate you to continue your exercise plan: change. As your body changes and you start noticing tighter and more defined muscles and an improvement in strength and energy, your fire will be stoked. Suddenly, you’ll find yourself wanting to exercise. You might even employ the services of a physical trainer to expand your exercise and nutritional knowledge. Body awareness is key to being able to apply many of the concepts you will learn from a trainer. Once you know your body, you’ll recognize your

limits and know how to apply progression techniques.

Now, before I embark on blatant selfpromotion, I will say that a trainer is only as good as your interest in learning how to train. If you expect a trainer to be the driving force to get you into the shape you desire, you’re wasting your time and money (re: there are no quick fixes.) Any trainer worth their weight, will dismiss any client who isn’t willing to become self-sufficient. I tell every client that my purpose is to be a knowledge base and teach the virtues of fitness and the methodologies for engagement. Back to the beginning of this article. You must be willing to learn or you’ll find yourself slipping back into old habits while living in a cycle of progression/regression.

Knowledge is power. Embrace this power and return your body to its intended functional state.

Up to 20 people hurry back and forth unloading palettes of groceries including onions and orange juice, bread and broccoli. Then they go to work unpacking the food, rebagging it and transferring it into cars for delivery.

The whole job is done by 8:30, when a Jazzercise class takes over the space.

For 20 of his 35 years in Carpinteria, Charles Lo Bue has risen early to join in this fast-moving Brown Bag program run by the Santa Barbara County Food Bank. It takes place the second and fourth Tuesday each month (except December), but Lo Bue isn’t idle in between. On other weekday mornings you’ll find him doing similar work for Catholic Charities, a nonprofit that also distributes food at the Veterans Building.

A: We do it because we know we’re performing a vital role in the community. I also do it because I’ve had such a beautiful life, and I want to give back.

Q: What do you do for the Food Bank and Catholic Charities?

A: I help prepare bags with a variety of donated foods such as canned goods, meat, eggs and fruit.

Q: What skills do you need for this work?

A: All you need is flexibility and the desire to work with other volunteers.

Q: Do you recommend this volunteer job to others?

A: Yes—always. It’s very rewarding, especially since you’re assisting people in need.

Help wanted

Catholic Charities and the Santa Barbara County Food Bank Brown Bag program provide nutritious fare to Carpinterians on limited budgets. Both nonprofits rely heavily on volunteers to sort and distribute the food—and to keep everything running smoothly.

Catholic Charities offers food to about 200 qualified families each week at the Veterans Building, and it also conducts food drives in May and December. “We wouldn’t be able to feed as many people without our volunteers,” says Resource Coordinator Cristina Lopez.

The Food Bank distributes bags of groceries in two ways: Qualified recipients can pick up their food at the Veterans Building, while volunteers deliver to those who can’t make it in.

The Brown Bag volunteers enjoy the pace—and they work well as a team, says Site Coordinator Jill Castro. “It’s fun, fast and a feel-good thing. We all care about each other and our recipients.”

“Kid Moses” by Mark R. Thornton

A street orphan in port city Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 9-year-old Moses dreams of his father’s farm, its location a mystery to him. That vague notion inspires him to stow away in the back of a lorry with his friend Kioso. The pair wander through the bush, ignorant of even basic wilderness survival, sleeping in ditches and under trees, escaping abuse, finding shelter with kind strangers. Then, tragically, Moses is alone again.

The stark depiction of endurance: what Moses finds to eat, the nature and horror of death, human bonds. The action is fast, and the search for home/family never stops.

He finds work with the Mama Tisha, and she hugs him. He thinks of his mother and feels again the heartbreak of being abandoned by her. He has never been in school, so there is hope at last when he gets taken in at a boarding school, but he cannot settle in a place so quiet and must break out.

“Just Mercy” by Bryan Stevenson

Carpinteria Library Book Club joins forces with Santa Barbara Reads this month in its selection of “Just Mercy” by Bryan Stevenson. The themes of the book include race and poverty, solitary confinement, wrongful convictions and juveniles in the justice system. The author is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Harvard School of Government, and winner of the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Prize.

He is a public interest lawyer and serves as the executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative. Events surrounding the book will be held through April 18, including a panel discussion that will double as this month’s meeting of the Carpinteria Library Book Club on Wednesday, March 16 at 6 p.m. Also coming to the Carpinteria Library, 5141 Carpinteria Ave., will be a screening of “The Hurricane” on March 22 at 6 p.m. and a presentation by Los Prietos Drama Kings on April 6 at 6 p.m. For more information about the Santa Barbara Reads program, visit santabarbaraca.gov/sbreads.

Engagement Karpenko - Crocker

Gina Georgette Karpenko and Aaron Pritchard Crocker were engaged on March 15, 2015 on a Catalina Island hilltop overlooking the coast. The couple met at a wedding a few years ago where he caught the garter belt and she caught the bouquet. Crocker, who is from Mission Viejo, works as a mortgage broker. He is the son of Karen and Randy Crocker.

Karpenko, a native Carpinterian, is a hairstylist. She is the daughter of Christine and Leonard Karpenko. The couple plans to wed on Sept. 17, 2016.

Cub Scout pack 50 shipped out to Nira, near Figueroa Mountain, for a weekend of roughing it as one of three annual camping trips.
