School board circles runway on DLI

For the second straight Carpinteria Unified School District board meeting, school board members, on March 22, stalled on installing a voluntary program to instruct early elementary students in both Spanish and English. Board members, who had at the last meeting held off due to lingering questions on teacher training costs to implement the Dual Language Immersion program, asked this time around for a clearer picture about staffing and enrollment issues that could be unintended consequences of shifting teachers and students away from mainstream classrooms and into a new program.

“I know it’s personal. I know your hearts sink when we start asking questions, but we need to cross our T’s and dot our I’s. We need to have a great program,” boardmember Jaclyn Fabre told parents when the board opted to again table a decision on DLI. Questions posed by the school board regarding how many students and teachers would be needed and how that would play out through the fifth grade have proved difficult to answer without a green-lighted program, but Canalino School Principal Jamie Persoon and CUSD Superintendent Micheline Miglis pledged to find more answers to logistical questions very soon as deadlines loom to get the program off the ground for 2016.

All four school board members present at the meeting were amenable and outwardly interested in the program, provided the desires of DLI supporters could be backed up by thorough planning.

As proposed, the district would implement DLI classes in kindergarten and

The moving parts in question are whether the classrooms are split between Aliso and Canalino schools and how many kindergarten and first grade classrooms should launch. The longterm plan is for the program to run through the fifth grade once the initial crop of students progresses.

Impassioned parents in support of the project paint DLI as an attractive program that will enhance CUSD and spur enthusiasm about local public schools. “We already are bicultural. We just don’t have the educational tools to support our students,” said Maureen Claffey, who has a preschool-aged daughter. She cited recent studies that found vast benefits of multilingualism including increased empathy and broadened perspective of students who can speak multiple languages. “This program has generated genuine excitement in the community for an academic program,” she said.

Superintendent Miglis, who is trilingual, presented for the program in an attempt to persuade the school board.

Her simplest argument in favor of DLI struck a personal chord. “If I didn’t first

learn my world language before English as a second language, I think my world view and my relationships would be different,” she said. Additionally, she has directly benefited in the job market from her language abilities. “You sought bilingualism when looking for a superintendent,” she added.

Boardmember Alicia Johnson said she was concerned that teacher feedback had not been included in presentations. Persoon assured the board that 11 teachers were qualified to instruct in the program and that the teachers would volunteer to shift into the classrooms. Jacobson said she needed more precise information on teacher grade levels and the collateral effects from a larger staffing shuffle to inform her decision. Of teaching positions, Miglis said, “There may be a bumping effect.”

Teachers are protected through the union contract from being fired due to shuffling to accommodate the new program, but they could be displaced and put in new positions in the district.

Persoon said, “I have a very good sense of the interest level from teachers.”

To the question of whether the classes would be split between Aliso and Canalino or housed exclusively at Canalino, where they had been originally proposed, Miglis said she prefers a split. “When it comes to kids, it would be great and best to stay at their home school,” Miglis said. The intention would be to group the students with their core group of friends.

She said on the other hand, keeping DLI on one campus would facilitate better teacher collaboration.

As proposed, DLI classes would have 24 students ideally constituted of eight English speaking students, eight Spanish speaking and eight bilingual students. Instruction at the kindergarten level would be 90 percent in Spanish and that percentage would decrease with each grade level. English speakers would benefit from learning a second language, and Spanish speakers would benefit from learning academic concepts in their native tongue while slowly acquiring English, according to proponents. If more people apply than space allows, a lottery system would determine who is accepted.

Last summer the water was so warm, the ladies were out every weekend. one day, a wave knocked makela down, and her two friends who tried to help got knocked down also. “So there we were, three old broads with boogie boards on leashes, flailing around in the surf and laughing like kindergartners,” said Carolyn edwards.

At that time makela declared that she wanted a button she could push—like the Life Alert buttons on t.V.—so when she fell down she could push it and a really cute young lifeguard would come just for her and rescue her. BRIEFLY Venoco files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Venoco, Inc. announced on March 18 that it has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in a Delaware court in a move the company describes as financial restructuring and reorganization. Additionally, according to a press release, Venoco has worked with senior lenders in a transaction that will eliminate approximately $1 billion from its balance sheet. Last month, Venoco elected to not make an interest payment and representatives had stated it was part of a debt-restructuring maneuver. The company has been hampered by the closure of the Plains All American pipeline and low oil prices, but it maintains it is positioned to continue normal oil and gas activities and meet its ongoing financial obligations during the restructuring process.

Identity theft suspects arrested

Deputies rounded up four suspects associated with a cache of fraudulent California identification cards and credit cards on March 15 at a Carpinteria Avenue motel. The officers first made contact with two subjects, 24-year-old Renee Ash and 37-year-old Christopher Hernandez, at 10:30 p.m. for smoking cigarettes in public and found one of them was on active probation for theft in Fresno County. A search of Hernandez’s vehicle yielded drug paraphernalia and the fraudulent cards. Both Ash and Hernandez were arrested.

Two subjects associated with Hernandez and Ash were contacted inside nearby motel rooms and also arrested. They were identified as Ash’s mother, 47-year-old Wanda Elliott-Ash and 31-year-old Chad Petros, both of Madera. The motel rooms were also searched and more stolen credit cards, checkbooks and manufactured fraudulent credit cards were located. Elliott-Ash also provided a false identity to conceal a felony narcotics/theft warrant out of Madera County.

Ash and Hernandez were booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail for violations of identity theft, conspiracy, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia, with bail set at $50,000. Wanda Elliott-Ash was booked into jail for possession of stolen property, identity theft, conspiracy, providing false identity, possession of drug paraphernalia and the felony warrant. Petros was later released with charges pending due to a medical issue.

Chamber announces France trip

Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District, the operator of local bus routes, will hold a series of public meetings in Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Goleta and Isla Vista to present proposed bus service changes to be implemented in August 2016. Multiple service routes are scheduled for modification including Line 20 between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. The public is invited to attend any of the meetings and provide feedback on the proposals or suggest other service improvements for consideration as funding becomes available. The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce has announced it will lead a trip to the French Riviera from Nov. 1 to 9 this year. Chamber members and the community at large can take part in the seven-night stay in Nice. The tour includes an excursion to Monte Carlo and a visit to the city’s famed casino and beautiful cathedral and Princess Grace’s tomb. Travelers will enjoy day trips to the seaside towns of Cannes, St. Tropez and Ventamiglia on the Italian Riviera. A visit to the Fragonard Perfume Factory is also included. The tour price is $2,950 per person (double occupancy) and includes roundtrip airfare from Los Angeles, first class hotel accommodations, 10 meals, professional tour escort, baggage handling and sightseeing with admission to all attractions per itinerary.

Obituaries

Madelyn “Marny” R. Middleton 5/28/1923 – 3/6/2016

Madelyn Middleton passed away peacefully at her home in Carpinteria on March 6, 2016 after a long battle with cancer. In her last days, she was encircled by loving family, life-long friends and compassionate caregivers. Marny was born in Orfordville, N.H. on May 28, 1923 to Reginald and Luriene Munn. Her family later moved to Carpinteria in 1939.

Marny met her future husband, George, in Pasadena, Calif. When the war started, George was sent to Corsicana, Texas for pilot training. Marny decided she didn’t want to wait any longer to join him. She arrived at the train station, but the only trains that were operating at that point were troop carriers. One kind soldier advised her to pose as his wife by turning around her engagement ring, so it looked like a wedding band. She was then able to board the train. George and Marny were married in a modest ceremony on June 26, 1943. After the war they were stationed in Japan. While there, Marny worked with the Red Cross helping the wounded soldiers write letters home to their loved ones. They continued their married life living in different military bases across the country. As the wife of an Air Force officer, she always made a welcoming and warm home, relishing being a mom to their three children: Michael, Cathy and Margie. After 20 years of service, George retired from the Air Force and they settled into their current home in Carpinteria in 1964.

Marny was an avid reader. She was a gourmet cook, never hesitating to try a new recipe, and was always a welcoming hostess for family parties. She enjoyed gardening, flower arranging and bird watching (finally seeing a pileated woodpecker in Virginia to add to her life list)

and traveling. She loved to knit, crochet, cross stitch and needlepoint and made quite a collection of each craft. Marny was one of the first volunteers at the Rape Crisis Center in Santa Barbara, acting as an advocate for survivors of sexual assault. She served on the Altar Guild at All Saints-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church and was a proud member of Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of Union Veterans. She worked as a clerk in the Justice Court in Carpinteria for many years and later at the Sheriff’s Department in Santa Barbara.

Marny was predeceased by her son Michael in 2012. She is survived by her devoted husband of 73 years, George, and her loving children Cathy (Ed) and Margie. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Bryan (Carin), Tanya (Alec) and Chris (Jennifer), and her great-grandchildren, Michael, Mathew, Rebecca, Ripley, Liam, Isla, Landon and Fiona. She was an adoring grandmother and great-grandmother and thought they were the most beautiful and intelligent children ever born! There is a void in our lives now and she will be forever loved and missed by her family, neighbors and friends.

Marny had many devoted caregivers and nurses also in the last year of her life. We give special thanks and love to Dusty, Rosaleen, Camilla and Elizabeth.

We would also like to thank her hospice nurses, Susana, Marie, Janet and Sean, and her doctors, Dr. Reyna Talanian and Dr. Eric Trautwein, for their kindness and support. We thank all the other hospice staff who did so much to help ease her transition to heaven.

Marny will be buried in a simple graveside service at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Friends of the Carpinteria Library, The National Audubon Society or Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care.

Nicholas West Tobey 2/21/1939 -2/25/2016

Nicholas West Tobey, born Feb. 21, 1939 in Santa Barbara, Calif., passed away peacefully just after 8 p.m. on Feb. 25, 2016, surrounded by his family. Growing up in the small beach town of Carpinteria, Calif., Nick spent a wily childhood fishing, surfing, hiking and hunting. He also engaged in some less common pastimes like jumping trains, sharing campfires with hobos, and late-night rooftop shenanigans. While not originally from Carson City, he quickly made it his own after moving there with his wife, Dianne, and baby Micheline in 1971.

A longtime educator, “Mr. Tobey” was very important to those who needed the most: those students who had lost a parent, whose home lives were in disorder, the diamonds in the rough, the ones who just needed a little push or a firm hand. Mr. Tobey was there for them. He even went so far as to master Spanish to enhance the success of his Hispanic students. His incredible passion for books and oral storytelling also created an inspiring and original classroom. He had the same expectations for his students that he had for himself: to achieve excellence in whatever task was being done and to do your best at all times. That is what he did for nearly 30 years.

An avid sportsman, Nick ran track in high school, played scratch golf and was even the point guard on his college basketball team. His love for sport continued into parenthood, as he shared his passion not only with his own children but their

Eudora Church 9/13/1914 – 3/5/2016

Eudora Church was born on a farm near Collyer, Kansas on Sept. 13, 1914. She was the daughter of James and Caroline Zeman. She passed away on March 5, 2016 in Thousand Oaks at the age of 101.

She attended a local school in Collyer and received a teacher’s certificate from Fort Hays State College in Hays, Kansas. She taught school in a one room schoolhouse in Collyer. In 1941, she married Bernard Church and they lived in Carpinteria until Bernard’s death in 2005. During their 63-year marriage, they enjoyed travel, rock collecting and their avocado grove.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Bernard, sisters Lora Huber, Della Huber, twin sister, Eleanora Nedbalek, and brother James Zeman.

Surviving family members are daughter Bernie Honey and granddaughter Linda Honey.

Private services were held at the Carpinteria Cemetery on March 11, 2016.

Donations may be made in Eudora’s memory to The Carpinteria Valley Historical Society at 956 Maple Ave., Carpinteria, CA 93013. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapel in Santa Barbara.

friends as well. He had an incredible ability to be any age, and get even the awkward kids on the fringes to join in the summer night baseball games out in the cul-de-sac. He was also a great lover of dogs, who were often at the center of the many family outdoor misadventures.

He lived by the same high standards as a husband. Nick loved Dianne with his entire being: still finding ways to melt her heart after 50 years. They say that behind every great man is a great woman, but the greatest men have their woman right beside them. That was Nick and Dianne.

They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last July 4th.

Nick and Dianne travelled extensively.

It began with whirlwind camping trips throughout the Sierras, the wilds of Wyoming, Colorado and Idaho, and tropical adventures in Hawaii. In 1970, they travelled Europe for three months, sleeping with the gypsies in France, fishing with Greeks on remote islands, picnicking in the Alps, and having their own Roman holiday in Italy. One year even found them in St. Andrews for the British Open.

They loved their later tours of America and Canada the best. In particular they enjoyed the three trips they made from Carson City to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska on the Arctic Ocean and the incredible range of animals and vistas they encountered along the way.

As a father, there is too much to say; he was the greatest mentor, teacher, role model and friend his kids could have ever known. This legacy naturally continued with his grandchildren. Nick is predeceased by his parents Charles West and Billy Tobey and his sister Mary Catherine “Buttons” Breunig. He is survived by his wife, Dianne, daughter Micheline (Turi) Becker, her children Julien and Sofia, son Nathan (Sarah), his children Ramona, Luther and Gus, brother Randall (Kari) Tobey, and his trusted black lab, Jack.

A celebration of life will be held at Thunder Canyon in Washoe Valley, April 9 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Park Foundation, but Nick would probably just encourage us to play a round of golf and “get over ourselves.”

Howard celebrates reading

The Howard School opened National Reading Month with a “green eggs and ham” breakfast and a Dr. Seuss Read-a-Thon for the lower grades. The upper grades celebrated by stepping back in time for Mark Twain Day. Students in grades five and six have read “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and the seventh and eighth graders are currently in the process of finishing “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.”

Students came to school in costumes of the period, and the girls used their ingenuity to create baskets with authentic picnic lunches featuring items that Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn might have eaten. No modern conveniences such as plastic or tinfoil were allowed, and the kids played old-fashioned games like sack racing after lunch followed by a fence white washing contest in an ode to Tom Sawyer.

Aliso students built bridges out of common materials to enhance their engineering skills.

Aliso students get engineering education

Last week’s third through fifth grade Aliso School activity day featured the engineering of a suspension bridge. The challenge asked students to build a bridge that would take their cars the farthest given common materials such as cups, masking tape, paper, straws and popsicle sticks. The team with the longest track earned the cars. According to Principal Holly Minear, “This activity emphasized the iterative process involved in engineering and reinforced our monthly character trait of taking personal responsibility by learning from our mistakes.” Science support teacher Mrs. Morvai and fourth/fifth grade teacher Ms. Perez led this challenge.

SB Dance Institute preps for Event of the Year

The culmination of yearlong educational dance programs in Santa Barbara County schools will take shape in the Santa Barbara Dance Institute’s Dance of the Year on May 15. Over 420 energetic young dancers, including many from Carpinteria, will participate in the Rhythms from Around the World performance at Marjorie Luke Theater in Santa Barbara. SB County Superintendent Bill Cirone said, “This is one show you won’t want to miss!” This year’s show is a dance/theater piece written and directed by Rosalina Macisco. Dances include samples from around the world from a wedding in Italy to a street carnival in Brazil among many other cultural dances.

Reserved seating tickets for the cultural appreciation trip around the world are $16 at the Lobero box office or for a $15 suggested donation at the Marjorie Luke Theater on the day of the show.

Children all over Carpinteria should start eating their carrots to sharpen their vision for the morning of Friday, March 25 when the Easter Bunny pays a visit to Albertsons and hides prize-filled eggs all over the store. The free event, which has quickly become a well-loved local tradition, will include an egg hunt for ages 2 and under at 9 a.m., ages 3 to 5 at 10:30 a.m., ages 6 to 8 at noon and ages 9 and 10 at 1:30 a.m.

Halos Pitchforks Chasing the dragon

An officer reportedly alarmed two suspicious young men with his presence in the Rincon Beach parking lot on the morning of March 7. According to the deputy’s report, the men, who were seated in a vehicle, jerked their heads and panicked upon seeing the squad car. The officer pulled a U-turn and circled back to the vehicle, and the men exited. One of the men, 19, reportedly leaned on the passenger side of the vehicle, while the other man, 20, began walking toward the beach. The officer asked the walking man what he was up to, and he reportedly giggled, stretched and twirled his hair before answering that he was going to the beach. The officer noted the suspicious body language and commented to the man that he could have parked much closer if his primary reason for parking was going to the beach. The other man soon followed.

The officer walked past the vehicle and glanced in to find burnt pieces of tinfoil plainly visible. Heroin users burn their drugs on tinfoil in a method called “chasing the dragon,” according to the deputy report.

When the men returned, the officer asked to whom the vehicle belonged. One of the men was standoffish and asked why the officer was asking questions.

Eventually, one of the men said it was his car, although it wasn’t registered to him.

The deputy searched the men, and one begged for lenience. He admitted to possessing some heroin, but implored the deputy to toss it and turn a blind eye.

A man reported that his girlfriend of seven years had stolen his vehicle from his Carpinteria Avenue worksite on March 11, but she sang a different tune.

He had abducted her, and she used the vehicle to get away, she said.

Officers first took a stolen vehicle report from the man. He had driven from Santa Paula to work in Carpinteria, he said. On the way down he stopped off at a liquor store to pick up some beer for the woman to drink in the car while he worked. She asked that he leave the keys so she could listen to the radio. However, 30 minutes after he began working, he noticed the vehicle was gone. He suspected she had driven to Los Angeles.

Three hours following the man’s report, the woman showed up at the Carpinteria sheriff’s station. She claimed the man was not her boyfriend but rather her stalker. They had eaten dinner together in Los Angeles the night before and he transported her against her will to his Santa Paula residence. He held her under the threat that he’d phone police with a false accusation if she attempted to get away. She said that when she saw an opening, she fled and drove to the sheriff’s station. However, there was the issue of three missing hours. She said that she had sat in the car contemplating whether to report the man.

Tortoises. Hares. All speeds and styles of runners cruised through this year’s Orchard to Ocean route and helped to raise funds for local classrooms. The annual event put on by Carpinteria Education Foundation included a trio of runs, the competitive 10k, the less competitive 5k and the 1-mile fun run for children.

Hundreds turned out to turn their legs over the scenic course and donate dollars that will be divvied up among Carpinteria Unified School District classrooms.

The second annual Slow Bike Race at Island Brewing Company had competitors crawling photo finishes over the 50-foot course.

2 pounds raab, any woody stems trimmed off 3 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, stems removed, cut into quarters 1 small red onion, peeled and chopped 4 cloves garlic, peeled and minced ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes 1 cup roasted red peppers, chopped 3 Tablespoons The Wizard’s Organic Hot Stuff 1 fresh baguette, cut into four pieces and halved Vegenaise 3 thick deli slices provolone cheese, cut in half

Bring 2 inches of water to a boil in a large saucepan. Add raab, cover, and cook for 3 minutes. Uncover, turn raab with tongs, and cook 3 minutes more.

Drain and rinse under cold water to stop the cooking process. Chop coarsely and set aside.

partially green but somewhat wilted looking over the winter. When the weather turns slightly warm in early spring, raab begins to actively grow again and is ready to harvest in April and May. This baguette sandwich features Wizard’s Organic Hot Stuff sauce from Carpinteria-based Edward and Sons Trading Company, Inc. It is the perfect complement to the sautéed raab, mushrooms and red peppers.

To soften the baguette a little (although this step is not necessary) I like to spread a little Vegenaise on the baguette slices and grill them just before making the sandwich. You may choose to do this or not. The cheese is a wonderful addition to the fresh grilled veggies but if you want this sandwich to be vegan, just leave it off. No worries!

Using a large skillet, sauté mushrooms in half of the olive oil over medium high heat for 5 – 6 minutes. Remove to a large bowl and set aside.

Heat remaining 1½ Tablespoons oil in the skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions and garlic for 8 minutes. Add red pepper flakes, raab, and mushrooms and sauté for 5 minutes more. Cook until all liquid has evaporated. Transfer to the large bowl, cover and set aside.

Cut the baguette in half lengthwise and then, keeping the halves together, slice it into thirds (six total halves).

Spread Vegenaise on each half and grill over medium high heat for a couple of minutes.

Divide raab mixture among the three bread bottoms, pour a tablespoon or more of the Wizard’s Organic Hot Stuff and top each with 2 of the cheese halves.

Place sandwich bottoms in the oven and broil for 2 minutes or until cheese melts.

Remove from oven and place tops over sandwiches. Serve while still warm.

Warrior golf works on long game

It’s basically a brand new start for this season’s Carpinteria High School boys golf team. So far in the first two Frontier League matches, Carpinteria’s young team has finished in sixth in the six-school division.

Three players returning from last year’s squad are juniors Elder Santillan and Juan Salcedo, along with sophomore Sebastian Beltran. “They’re making strides pretty quickly,” explained the coach, but there is ground to make up.

Newcomer Alex Cisneros surprised the field, shooting a team best 112 in the March 17 match against Fillmore at Elkins Ranch Golf Club. James Irrabon and Gerardo Ruvalcaba round out the rest of the Warrior team. “They work hard; they listen well,” said Benzin of his young group that’s made up of only six members.

Malibu, which has finished on top of the pack in both matches thus far, should be the favorite to win league. “They’ve got two kids that are capable of shooting in the 70’s at any golf course,” said Benzin. The two being medalist Quincey Allen, who shot a 78, and Daniel Haines, who scored an 81 in the match at Elkins Ranch. Fillmore, which has nearly every golfer back from last season and finished runner-up in the two outings, should end up in the same spot in the final league standings.

As far as Carpinteria is concerned, competing for a league title might be a lofty goal for this season. “I’m looking to build a program again,” assured Benzin.

The Frontier League uses the double par rule which requires that if a player’s score doubles the par score of the hole and/or course, the ball must be picked up and that player will mark that (twice the par) score on his card.

Benzin’s main goal for the team this year is for his top three (Santillan, Salcedo and Beltran) players to break the 110 mark without having to pick up the ball.

And, for the other three, Benzin hopes to reduce their double par scores to under eight per match. “Those kids are getting better, a lot better, quickly,” said Benzin.

“Kids improve that rapidly at that age,” he added.

The next Frontier League match for the Warriors takes place on April 7 with a local tee time of 1 p.m.

March 16 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team made it competitive toward the end, but fell to Oak Park in a non-league match, 11-7. In singles, Warrior number-three Jeremy Saito continued to impress, going 2-1 on the day. number-two Franky Hall picked up a hard fought tiebreak win, and number-one Jacques Jougla also won a set. in doubles, Bryan Taira/Myles Morgan, Sam Truax/Jacob Ascencio and Kirby Zapata/Luke Nahooikaika each picked up a point for Carpinteria. “Both teams battled the 90-degree weather and used their fair share of subs. I was not overly thrilled with how we started, but i was happy with how we ended,” said warrior coach Charles Bryant.

March 17 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team defeated St. Bonaventure in a Tri-Valley league match, 13-5. in doubles, warriors’ number-three, Sam Truax/ Jacob Ascencio continued their winning ways, sweeping their three sets. numberone, Kirby Zapata/Luke Nahooikaika played really well together and won two out of three sets, as did Bryan Taira/Myles Morgan. in singles, warriors’ number-two Jeremy Saito swept his three sets and only dropped three games. number-one Bernard Cardona won two of his three sets, and also picking up a win was Solomon Nahooikaika.

March 17 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team played in the Frontier league’s second match of the year hosted by Fillmore at Elkins Ranch golf Course but fell to the bottom of the standings, unable to pick up a team point. Alex Cisneros shot a 112 with teammates Elder Santillan and Sebastian Beltran tying for second in Carpinteria’s individual scores, each registering a 124. Malibu dominated in team play, winning by 23 strokes over host Fillmore, led by medalist Quincey Allen with a 78 and Daniel Haines with an 81.

March 15 – The Carpinteria High School softball team beat Bishop Diego 15-3 in a home, non-league game. The warriors were led at the plate by Sierra Diaz who went 3-for-4 with two RBi and a run scored. Raquel Cordero batted 2-for-4 with four RBi and a run scored, including a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning. Amanda Blair had nine strikeouts and pitched a solid game. After trailing 2-0, Carpinteria responded by scoring two runs in the third, two in the fourth, four in the fifth and seven in the sixth.

March 16 – The Carpinteria High School girls softball team beat Channel islands, 10-0, by mercy rule in the fifth inning. Warrior hurler Amanda Blair had another strong pitching and hitting performance, tallying nine strikeouts with no walks, and giving up only two hits. The sophomore struck out the side in the first and third innings, and also collected two hits with two RBi. Teammate Jayme DeNault also had two hits, two RBi and two runs scored. “The lady warriors played with a lot of focus and enthusiasm, resulting in excellent defensive play and good hitting,” said Carpinteria coach Henry gonzales.

March 17 – The Carpinteria High School girls softball team notched a 4-3 home win against Santa Clara. After spotting the visitors two runs in the first inning, the warriors scored one run in the third on a single by Raquel Cordero. Carpinteria added another run in the fourth on another single by McKenzie Kephart to tie the score 2-2. After giving up another run in the seventh, the warriors, with two out in the final inning, got consecutive singles from Raquel Cordero and Amanda Blair. then Samantha Saenz, after an overthrow put the runners at second and third, banged a single to right center field scoring two for the win.

March 19 – The Carpinteria softball team swept a doubleheader at Santa Ynez, winning the first game, 9-3, then, capturing the second, 12-9. Sierra Diaz batted 5-for8 and Amanda Blair went 6-for-8 to lead the two-game warrior hitting attack. Blair pitched a one-hitter in the first game and McKenzie Kephart delivered a complete game victory in the second. “We ended the five-game week, 5-0,” said Carpinteria coach Henry gonzales. warriors had 26 hits and 21 runs on the day.

Baseball

March 17 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team (1-2) picked up its first win of the 2016 campaign by defeating Dunn School (2-3) 9-2 at Los Olivos. Sal Delgado limited the Earwig offense to just four hits and three walks while striking out eight in the complete game. Carpinteria was led on offense by Jonah Spach who knocked a solo homer in the fourth and a bases loaded double in the sixth to tally four RBi. Ricky Medina collected three hits and two RBi, including a pair of doubles. Delgado reached base all four times at bat and scored three to help his own cause.

March 19 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team (1-3) dropped a non-league game at home to Santa Ynez by a score of 8-0. David Martinez started on the mound for the Warriors and surrendered one earned run over five innings. The Pirates scored five by the time he gave way to freshman left-hander Chase Mayer. Carpinteria fell victim to five errors, two balks, three walks, three hit batsmen and nine Pirate hits. “The Pirates played a really good game in all aspects; they bring a formidable, positive, team approach to each pitch,” said Warrior coach Pat Cooney.

March 21 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team traveled to Ojai for the first of a two-game set with Villanova and came away with a 10-4 non-league win. Junior right hander Sal Delgado tossed five innings and struck out five while surrendering only one run on one hit to capture the win. Senior lefty Robert Warren pitched the

March 17 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team traveled to Santa Barbara to take on Bishop Diego, falling to their South Coast rivals, 3-0. The warriors were without coach Dino garcia, who was unable to make the trip, still recovering from food poisoning that he suffered earlier in the week. Carpinteria fell behind early, dropping the first game of the match by a score of 25-13. The Warriors hung tough in the second game, but were edged by a score of 25-21. “They are some big kids (Bishop Diego), but we got them defensive wise,” said assistant coach Delaney Forsythe, taking over for Garcia for the St. Patrick’s Day showdown.

Track and Field

March 19 – The Carpinteria High School track team participated over the weekend at the San Marcos Royal Classic in Santa Barbara. On a cool and overcast day, Chance Wright set a new personal record in the 300-meter hurdles to move to 19th on the warriors all-time list and earned a third-place medal. Annalisa DeAlba set a personal record in the discus to move to number nine on the school’s all-time list.

Jeanette Fantone finished fourth in the 300 hurdles and moved to number 18 on the all-time list for the warriors. nico garcia also set a personal record in the shot put.

About two years ago, I was leaving the old Vons supermarket on Linden when I received a text message from a friend of mine. He was a production assistant on a reality show that happened to be filming a scene in front of the seal fountain.

“Where are you?” he wrote.

“I’m in the Vons parking lot,” I responded.

“So am I. We’re filming a scene. Come over” he wrote.

I began walking toward a crowd gathered at the fountain to find a euphemistic circus of narcissism. My friend Joe was holding court in the center of four other production assistants. I maintained a neutral zone between me and Joe, not wanting to interrupt his meeting.

Joe gave me a nod of acknowledgement and held up one finger to signify that he’ll be with me in a minute.

In front of me, headset-wearing Hollywood types were scurrying about.

Makeup artists were tending to unrecognizable actors. Just then my attention was diverted to a tall, beautiful woman in a white evening dress. Her face screamed annoyance as she marched directly toward Joe. She towered over his little five-foot-four body. Aside from her Amazonian stature, her attire communicated her intent to be recognized as someone important to the show. My God, how does she keep herself contained in that dress? Her body was spilling out like melons forced into an outlawed plastic shopping bag.

The woman took her 24-carat finger, poked it at Joe’s flat chest and barked, “I’m sick and tired of being his chauffeur.

I’m not going to do it one more (expletive) time. He can drive his (expletive) (expletive) around himself.”

I maintained my safety zone frozen and incredulous. The live display before me was very entertaining.

“Go sit in the golf cart,” Joe gently commanded while staying focused on his production crew meeting. Joe looked past his cohort to make visual contact with me… With a major eye roll, he mouthed, “I’m sorry.”

The woman didn’t take a breath. “I’m not going to sit in no [explitive] golf cart,” she said.

In his best attempt at masking his impatience, Joe took a deep breath and said, “Please go sit in the cart, and I’ll be right over to talk to you about your scenes for today.”

Just when I thought that it couldn’t get any more out of control, a man dressed in a rubber avocado suit stumbled out of nowhere and appeared to be on the

verge of collapse. “I can’t breathe,” he muttered through the thick suit. “I’m going to pass out.”

The poor human avocado was apparently suffering from dead batteries needed battery power to keep an internal airflow.

“Hey Avocado, your batteries are in the truck,” Joe yelled.

Almost on cue, the avocado fell to his knees and landed face down on the pavement as he continued his slow deflation.

I thought, holy guacamole, that avocado just rotted and died right before my eyes. This is the real reality show. They should have been filming all of this.

So that you don’t think that I’m insensitive to the plight of the avocado, you’ll be relieved to know that the avocado got new batteries and he reinflated quickly.

I should add to my avocado attributes above that avocados can be hilarious when their batteries fail.

All avocado anecdotes aside, the green fruit has a serious side too.

In case you haven’t heard, avocados are a healthy fat that supports cell function and metabolism. But they’re more than that, and we’ve been throwing the most nutritious parts away. We should be grinding up the pits and skin into a granular powder and eating it. The resulting bright orange granulated waste product is ripe for incorporation into foods like your protein drinks and morning oatmeal.

Aside from being crammed with antioxidants, the pit and the skin are known cancer-killers. But that’s not all. They also provide fiber that supports hunger satiation while leading to weight loss. And if you act now, the avocado’s skin will improve the look and feel of your own skin. The skin and pit, when consumed, increase the production of collagen which promotes a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

If you’re not a fan of the avocado after this tribute, then I have work to do to help us all realize how lucky we are to live where we do with unprecedented access to the bumpy green health grenades.

Call me an avovangelist: Hail, all mighty avocado; our lives are enriched because of you, battery-charged or not.

Girl Scouts from six Carpinteria troops came together for songs and games culminating with an egg hunt last Sunday to celebrate the start of spring. Invitations were sent to all local schools for any interested girls to come join the fun and learn about Girl Scouts. Arlene Samen, founder of One Heart World-Wide, will serve as this year’s featured speaker. A nurse practitioner in maternal fetal medicine for 30-plus years, Samen’s whole life changed when His Holiness the Dalai Lama asked her to take her expertise to help pregnant women in Tibet, where one out of 10 newborns died due to preventable causes.

Salvation Army presents to Morning Rotary

Carpinteria Morning Rotary Club hosted Mark Gisler, the Executive Director of Salvation Army Hospitality House, at a recent breakfast meeting. Gisler started as a volunteer over 10 years ago at the Carpinteria location and has served in various positions since. Currently, there are two Salvation Army locations in Santa Barbara, the Core and the Hospitality House. The Core houses a licensed after school and summer camp program serving approximately 75 youth. The Hospitality House’s main purpose is to transition homeless individuals into housing or respective abuse prevention programs. The house has a 70 percent success rate of transitioning individuals.

Wade Nomura recently traveled to Tegucigalpa, Honduras to evaluate two large water and sanitation projects for Rotary. The projects included the drilling of 23 wells to bring clean drinking water to 23 small villages in the San Mateo region of Honduras.

Many of these communities relied on seasonal polluted streams as their main water supply. The projects will pipe in fresh, clean water from a community well directly to each household. The benefits include less disease and sicknesses, better health, more time in school or work, and time to be more productive within the community.

“I was taken by the local Rotarians to these sites, and it really became evident to me of all the people that are doing good in this world. Here in Carpinteria, we often take clean water for granted, but it hit me hard when I was told at one of the communities that a number of infants had died of dehydration due to water borne diseases only a year ago. Being thanked by that community, and knowing that the children will be safe from water borne diseases, makes it all worth it” said Nomura, who will be traveling to Mexico in April to do more projects on behalf of Rotary.

Westmont update provided to Noon Rotary

Nancy Phinney, Communications Director for Westmont College, presented the Carpinteria Noon Rotary Club with information on the college’s past, present and future.

More than 20 club members attended the luncheon to hear about the history of Westmont College and plans for a new global institute on campus, which will be up and running next fall.

The swiftest recovery

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham My two-person tent is a mere speed bump for tiny island foxes. Their muddy, detailed prints track up and down it as if they were bounding on volcanic rock across Santa Cruz Island. They walk up the side walls tent as easily as you or I walk up a flight of stairs.

They know when it’s time for lunch down by the kayaks. They probe all the pockets behind each seat on the kayaks.

Some are even brave enough to dumpster dive into an open gear box. They’re catlike where they need to be, and that includes the fig trees located behind the guide site up Scorpion Canyon. I knew they were nimble, but I didn’t realize quite how nimble until the explosion of figs this past summer. Cats have retractable claws but island foxes don’t, so it’s even more impressive watching them contort their tiny frames in the congested fig trees.

The island fox inhabits every nook and cranny on mountainous Santa Cruz and the other Northern Channel Islands. Of course that wasn’t the case 12 years ago.

There was a time not long ago when only 60 island foxes survived on Santa Cruz Island, and there were as few as 15 foxes each on neighboring Santa Rosa and San Miguel islands, the archipelago’s largest land predator free-falling toward extinction on the Channel Islands National Park.

That was at the turn of the century, when it was actually rare to see one of the cinnamon-colored foxes bounding through a campground or scampering up a fig tree. It was a time when opportunistic, non-native golden eagles ruled the skies and nearly wiped out all three subspecies of island foxes.

By 2004, all three subspecies of island foxes had been added to the Endangered Species List. However, with an aggressive cooperative effort led by the National Park Service, The Nature Conservancy, Institute for Wildlife Studies and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife, the island fox rebounded like no other endangered species has since the Endangered Species Act

Agile climbers, island foxes need not settle for low hanging fruit. was established by Congress 40 years ago.

“The cooperative conservation efforts that occurred was a real role model,” said Tim Coonan, who for 23 years was the lead terrestrial biologist at the Channel Islands National Park, and spearheaded island fox recovery from 1999 until he retired in 2015. “There were actions on the ground immediately, even before the island fox was listed,” he said.

Beginning in 1999 and into the early part of the 21st century, a four-pronged effort ensued that changed the ecological landscape on the windswept, volcanic chain. Aggressive captive breeding took place for each subspecies of island fox on the three Northern Channel Islands, because if one subspecies was lost then it was gone forever.

The restoration of bald eagles—extinct from the islands for 50 years due to DDT poisoning—occurred from 2002 to 2006, allowing the iconic raptors to reestablish historic island territories. They also helped keep golden eagles at bay, which were lured from the mainland by the feral pig population on Santa Cruz Island that had grown to roughly 5,000 running roughshod across the mountainous islet.

Eventually all 43 golden eagles were trapped and relocated to the California mainland. Bald eagles eat fish, not island foxes.

By 2008 the last of the feral pigs were eradicated from Santa Cruz opening the

door for island foxes to flourish, which they have. Initially it was thought that Santa Cruz Island had a carrying capacity of approximately 1,200 to 1,500 island foxes, but current estimates shows a population infusion of around 2,500 animals on the largest, most biodiverse island off the Ventura coastline.

“They’re taking all of us a little by surprise,” said Robert McMorran, wildlife biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “They will be the fastest mammal to be delisted under the Endangered Species Act.” What’s even more astounding is how well the island fox has done during a time

of extreme drought.

“I’m surprised,” continued Coonan, who now heads the nonprofit Friends of the Island Fox. “We really don’t know what the carrying capacity is on the larger islands.”

There’s plenty of room to roam on the Northern Channel Islands, where the tiny island foxes have kept everyone guessing.

Natural History Notes

In the Atlantic, the Western Atlantic subspecies of harbor seal is found in the east Canadian Arctic and southern Greenland, south to New Jersey. The Eastern Atlantic Harbor Seal is found on the west coast of Europe north to Scandinavia, the British Isles and Iceland.

Teachers visit Vietnam

Three retired Carpinteria teachers, Anna Carrillo, Martha McIntyre and Ceil Schnepple spent a day motoring on Vietnam’s Halong Bay, home to 1,969 limestone islands, and snapped a photo from the boat that weaved between the dense cluster of monoliths. Their trip began in Saigon, renamed Ho Chi Minh City, and extended north to two World Heritage Sites. They surveyed Hoi An, a 16th to 19 th century historic trading center, now known for its colorful paper lanterns, which were lit up during the monthly full moon celebration. They then toured the old imperial city of Hue. The trip ended with a stop in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi.
