Young theater students thrive in spotlight

BY PETER DUGRÉ Junior versions of “The Lion King” and “The Wizard of Oz” will be brought to life this spring by budding actors. Carpinteria Family and Summerland schools, both small kindergarten through fifth grade school houses, have a role for each and every student from the 5-year-olds to fifth-graders, and the group efforts produce an educational and team building experience unattainable to little bodies and minds seated at desks.

The students will get help perfecting their “Circle of Life” and “Somewhere

Over the Rainbow” pitches from professional directors Laezer Schlomkowitz and Kellyn Johnson, who work for the Children’s Creative Project and somehow turn a gaggle of exuberant kids into impressive theater troupes. “These students are fully invested, so naturally they’re attuned to the material and excited to master it,” said Johnson, who is directing “The Lion King Jr.” for Family School.

magical.” Mate-Martinsen grew up with a father who ran a theater troupe and is all in when describing the power of theater on students. “It gets them thinking bigger than themselves. They play a whole new character.”

Some students find their place to thrive given the opportunity to perform. MateMartinsen gave Summerland’s Ella Bailey as an example of a student who found a place to thrive with theater. “Laezer saw this little star in her. Her parents didn’t know. She didn’t know it herself,” MateMartinsen said. Bailey is Dorothy in this spring’s play.

Sometimes the spark found through theater ignites interests in other scholastic endeavors. Learning lines can spill over to language arts; music to math; and African settings in “The Lion King” to social studies.

Mate-Martinsen said, “Pretty much past Spring Break, Summerland turns into this little liberal arts school.”

The level of responsibility raises the bar for expectations, Johnson said. When the spotlight is on and the curtains rise, the students perform in front of hundreds of onlookers. “It’s a big moment, and everyone is watching you. Students have this

realization and think, ‘I have a voice!’” she said.

For both schools, the all-hands-ondeck performances, which include parent set-designers and costume committees and classroom projects to support the productions, build school community and pride.

Sheriff’s office recognizes dispatchers

In honor of National Telecommunications Week, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office recognized its team of public safety dispatchers. The Sheriff’s Office stated in a press release, “Our dispatchers are the first and most critical contact our citizens have with emergency services.”

In 2015, Santa Barbara County Dispatchers dispatched 162,118 law enforcement calls for service, 21,500 fire incidents and 51,665 AMR medical incidents for an average of 645 calls each day. Dispatchers answered more than 64,000 calls in 2015 for an average of 830 telephone calls per day. Also this past year, five Santa Barbara County Dispatchers received life-saving awards from the Emergency Medical Services Agency for CPR saves.

The Santa Barbara County Public Safety Dispatch Center has 31 dispatchers including supervisors. The process of becoming a dispatcher is a challenging one. Dispatchers undergo a rigorous testing and background process followed by months of intense training and then a period of on-the-job training before they work independently.

Plaza Theater to celebrate anniversary

Plaza Playhouse Theater is holding a special reception and screening of the film “Casablanca” to celebrate its 88th anniversary on Saturday, April 30 starting at 6 p.m.

The Plaza, which is the oldest continuously operating venue between Los Angeles and San Francisco, first opened its doors on April 28, 1928. It was part of the newly constructed Alcazar building and carried that namesake on its marquee.

There to greet theatergoers that first night was manager and Carpinteria resident Oliver Prickett, an actor who later had a small, non-speaking role in “Casablanca.” Patrons were treated to a live band and the premiere showing of the comedy “The Fifty-Fifty Girl.”

Admission was $1.10, quite a sum considering the usual price was around 25 cents.

The 88th anniversary celebration of the Plaza Playhouse Theater will include a reception and entertainment prior to the screening. A special door prize based around the theme of “Casablanca” will also be awarded to a lucky patron. Tickets for the event, which include appetizers and refreshments, are $20 per person and can be purchased online at plazatheatercarpinteria.com and at Seastrand (919 Linden Ave.).

STEVE NICOLAIDES A week from now my wife Caroline and I will be in Napa Valley screening our documentary “Eyes on the Sky,” with a group discussion to follow. The film is about the water situation in the western United States, and the screening makes me nervous. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles; I came to learn about the hostility from Northern California toward Southern California slowly but powerfully.

They hated that we called San Francisco “Frisco,” and we hated that they called L.A. “Smell A.” What I didn’t understand at the time, in my teens, was that it was all about sharing water. The north resented sending its liquid treasure south, and we in the south never acknowledged the “gift.” Through the years, Northern California has threatened to secede from the south over water, but the threat never got enough teeth to go anywhere.

Now we all know what the great El Niño of 2016 has brought. Basically nothing. Lake Cachuma is a pond. Without Northern California water, the reservoir is dead. Two more years like our last two years and even the guppies will have a hard time surviving. And now I have to go up to Northern California and speak about the water crisis in the West. I imagine the audience will sit back and remind me that without Northern California water, all of us down here die.

The Carpinteria Valley Water District has stated Northern California water channeled into Lake Cachuma will cover our community through this coming summer. That sounds comforting.

Or does it? Only this summer? What if we are stuck in a continuation of this historic drought? What if all this rain north of Central California is just a small thirst break to quench our need until we come to terms with the reality that rain has become more precious than gold?

California will have to learn to play nice with the currently water-laden north and the thirsty south. Anyone out there have a good story about a family in crisis?

Where sharing the bounty is life or death?

It’s hard to be generous in times of need.

I’m old fashioned. I worked hard my whole life to establish a future that protects my family. Our community is the same as our family. We need to be smart about protecting what we have and what the future promises us. Water is essential.

California will have to learn to play nice with the currently waterladen north and the thirsty south.

Anyone out there have a good story about a family in crisis?

We know this. Whether we respect it is up to us.

California nearly reached the governor’s mandate for water conservation this past year. Lawns were torn out, rain barrels were purchased, low-flow toilets installed. The billion-dollar desalination plant in Carlsbad is online now, with another in the planning stage for El Segundo.

I feel that we, the little guys, turning off our taps and watering less and less, have pretty much done what we can. In California they say 60 percent of water use goes to agriculture, 30 percent to industry, and 10 percent to residential use. Many people do not like ocean desalination; many do not favor cleaning wastewater and returning it to the aquifers. But if we keep putting our head in the sand and our eyes to the sky, waiting for the rain that surely will come some day, we’re courting disaster.

Recently my iPhone 5 died. Or rather I murdered it because it kept asking me to sign in to iTunes, which I’d never ever done before. I bought an iPhone 6; after enduring the total destruction of my phone list (that’s why I haven’t called you!) I am now living in peace with my phone. If I can do this, a 67-year-old Luddite, all of us can accept a changing climate scenario and start getting smart about preserving water. Carpinteria sends over a million gallons of water each day to the ocean. That is just not right anymore.

Keep a good thought for me and Caroline as we journey into hostile territory.

We are beggars for sure, but we are still in the great family of man. We are in this together. We hang together, or we hang individually. Pass the potatoes, please.

Work has picked up again at Casa del Sol, a Carpinteria Avenue motel and apartment complex that has been under construction for years.

Casa del Sol remodel moves forward

The slow-moving remodel of Casa del Sol motel and apartments at 5585 Carpinteria Ave. was deemed a long time coming a long time ago. City of Carpinteria Development Director Steve Goggia, however, said that progress has ramped up again after a delay, and “We should see some pretty fast improvement over the next four months.”

The renovation of the 19-room motel and 12-unit apartment building was approved three years ago by the city, but work has occurred in fits and starts.

Building owner Dario Pini, who has a reputation for providing substandard housing to low-income residents, also owns the three properties west of Casa del Sol. “We just have to stay on top of what’s going on there,” said Goggia. The city

has long struggled with how to best approach Pini’s properties. Pressure has been applied in the form of code violations and fines, but the city has tried to avoid a full-blown battle that might delay improvements indefinitely.

Pini sold the last apartment building in the row, then called Cypress Tree, last summer. The new owner has invested in a complete overhaul of the complex, and the new Ohm Apartments have proven popular and filled quickly.

The Casa del Sol remodel will include new landscaping and reconfigured parking. A few modifications have been made to the original plans, but Goggia characterized them as minor. The final product should be a southwestern style complex with slightly larger rooms and significant improvements to the formerly derelict facilities.

Church lets it shine

Thank you Mike Wondolowski for your thought-provoking column, “Shining A Little Less Light on the Subject,” in the Coastal View News on April 7. I am heartened to hear that the City of Carpinteria is working on provisions to avoid light pollution in new developments around town.

My neighborhood at the end of Walnut Avenue has been the victim of light pollution for the last few years, ever since prison-like lighting was installed on the warehouse church across the street, shining from dusk to dawn seven days a week, 365 days a year.

The lights shine directly into my bedroom window, because they are directed straight out from the building rather than down towards the parking lot. The illumination is strong enough that I cannot see stars at night even when standing in my backyard in the shadow of the house. (Even the fact that the house casts a shadow at night is crazy.)

The parking lot is used some nights of the week, but not all. Church activities are over by 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. at the latest.

My neighbors and I have tried to contact both the church and the property management firm several times to no avail. Each says that the other is in charge of the lighting. The City has no code to cover this situation.

In his article, Mike states, “Preventing light trespass (such as avoiding floodlights that light up your neighbor’s yard and preventing light from shining into others’ windows) is part of being a good neighbor.” I am sure that neither the church nor the property management firm has intended to commit what Mike calls “light trespass.”

Here is a simple short-term solution.

Put the lights on a timer so that they come on when there are events at the church that need illumination in the parking lot and turn off at 10 p.m. each night. That way, even though the official “International Dark Sky Week 2016” has passed, my neighbors and I can enjoy the beauty of the night sky once again.

Desal and marijuana would grow in harmony

The recent filing for bankruptcy by Venoco is not surprising. In the likely event of Venoco closing down, I’ve always thought that the property would be an ideal location for a desalinization plant. Although a desalinization plant would require massive environmental reports, restructuring and large amounts of energy, I think it can be done and the property could be large enough to provide the power needed by clean energy sources such as solar and wind. What is required to achieve this is a huge investment by the community, Venoco, state and federal agencies to restore the property to receive desalinization certification.

Because of the drought, our groundwater usage is not sustainable; we must have a new plan for the future. But how do we replace the tax revenue loss and jobs from Venoco’s inevitable closing?

Carpinteria is perfectly placed to become a major producer of legal medical and recreational marijuana. We have the marketing, the infrastructure, the (desalinated) water, the weather and the expertise to produce quality legal marijuana.

There are currently growers in the area doing exactly that. Once all marijuana is legalized, this would produce hundreds of permanent and well paying jobs plus tax revenue that would far exceed that lost by Venoco’s closing. Marijuana proponents are currently drafting an initiative to legalize recreational marijuana in California and will be on the ballot this

cognitive and creative challenge, a move towards profound racial reconciliation and real cultural equity and a chance to close the achievement gap between our students. Research speaks this, see for yourselves!

November. The Adult Use of Marijuana Act (A.U.M.A.) is likely to pass, and we will join the many other states that have already legalized recreational marijuana.

There is a national groundswell to this new reality. California has already appointed Lori Ajax as its first marijuana czar. Regardless of how you stand on marijuana and desalinization, we can’t let this opportunity pass without serious consideration. So, hang onto your bongs because here it comes.

Tree deliberation dodges facts

I have a concern with the ineffective nature of the Tree Advisory Board meeting held at City Council Chambers on April 7. The meeting was held to decide whether four large eucalyptus trees at Heath Ranch Park should be removed.

The board seemed unprofessional, ill informed and hostile to neighbors of the park who came to speak. A large report available as a handout was contradictory and hard to understand. The expert arborist who had written part of the report seemed confused regarding its specifics.

And, although the evidence didn’t seem to indicate it, the Parks and Recreation Department position was like a dog on a bone: take down the trees.

Missing from the process was consideration of the trees’ historic nature, habitat value, history of park use or a realistic discussion of risk in public places.

The park is part of our neighborhood.

Children call it Big Tree Park because it is. We see the wind blow in the trees and watch the hawks carry out their lives in flight above us and hear the great horned owl calling at night. It is the people’s park.

Many ideas were posed for consideration by the neighbors in the audience. None seemed to be considered. This is not right.

DLI risk worth rewards

We are greatly disappointed by the school board’s decision to delay the Dual Language Immersion pathway for our students. We hope against hope that this delay is not a tabling of the idea, but rather a motion to bring this to fruition in the close future.

As a parent and former DLI educator, I want to urge the board and the community to have courage and not be bogged down by confusion or fears.

Firstly, innovative ideas always involve risks. There has never been a public school innovation that has not required a leap of faith. We will never be able to answer all the questions or please all stakeholders. We must simply act and respond.

Secondly, this risk has been done all

over the world, including places like Utah and Wyoming, needless to mention down the street from us at Montalvo in Ventura and Adelante in Santa Barbara.

Go and visit these schools; their work is tremendous. They have taken risks and have been successful. We must catch up in Carpinteria and offer this opportunity!

Thirdly, teachers and administrators are experts at pilot programs, constantly being asked to pilot new science or language arts programs. We can do this; the program must start somewhere, and a pilot is a great option!

Lastly, the board must move away from its hang up with the program being considered “elite.” The DLI pathway is what we make of it, opportunity for a

DLI deserves pilot program

I have been very impressed with the CUSD board in its close scrutiny of the proposed Dual Language Immersion program into our school plan. However, at last night’s board meeting, I realized that in considering all potential difficulties in adopting the plan some of the members of the board failed to consider the value of implementing a pilot program at this time in the process to validate the need and to prove the worth of the plan. We have teachers and an administrator in place to implement the pilot program. We already have a kindergarten and first-grade curriculum and instruction in place for advanced language development in English.

We have more than enough students with parental support to fill the pilot classes.

We have a history in the school district of piloting curriculum before adoption. So why delay piloting a potentially valuable program before its adoption?

Four local projects selected for Measure A dollars

Measure A, the half-cent sales tax approved by voters in 2008, will be put to work once again to improve pedestrian and bicycle routes throughout Carpinteria. Santa Barbara County Association of Governments, which decides where the dollars go, approved $450,000 of Measure A funds toward four local projects proposed by the city. Since 2008, the City of Carpinteria has been awarded $1.3 million from the tax measure that extended Measure D funding for another 30 years.

Carpinteria Avenue Pedestrian Safety Improvement Project: Dump Road to Bluffs

New sidewalk will be constructed between Dump Road and the Bluffs Nature Preserve Trail.

Total cost: $300,740 Measure A amount: $180,444 Construction start: September 2016

Carpinteria Avenue/Elm Avenue crosswalk relocation project

In order to improve pedestrian safety at bus stops, two crosswalks will be removed and a new crosswalk installed.

Total cost: $253,000 Measure A amount: $138,00 Construction start: September 2017

Carpinteria Children’s Project at Main Sidewalk Infill Project

Sidewalks will be installed along Walnut Avenue and Sixth Street perimeters of the campus.

Fifth Street Pedestrian Bridge Feasibility Study

The study will examine the feasibility of building a pedestrian bridge across Franklin Creek near Fifth Street at Aliso School in order to provide a safer route to school for kids in the beach neighborhood who now cross the railroad bridge.

School board sends DLI to committee

Dual Language Immersion will not be an option in Carpinteria elementary schools this fall. At its April 12 meeting, the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education voted unanimously to form a district-wide committee to better study the implementation of DLI and potentially launch it in 2017-2018. In voting unanimously to hold off, school board members cited classroom sizes and the exclusivity of forming a separate option for education within the elementary grade structure.

Boardmember Terry Hickey Banks said, “I’m really concerned about establishing an elite track for a very limited few in Carpinteria. I’m struggling with this personally, and it’s really holding me back to saying yes to this.”

The proposal to form classrooms instructed in a blend of Spanish and English at the early elementary levels had yet to specify how many classrooms would be part of the program, but each classroom would be capped at 24 students. That would be fewer than other district classrooms and potentially have the effect of adding more students to other already crowded classrooms.

Board vice president Michelle Robertson had motioned to pilot the program in the 2016-2017 school year, but her motion failed 3-2. Only Jaclyn Fabre sided with Robertson for jumpstarting DLI sooner with at least one K-1 class. “It’s a philosophical shift for this community, and if we don’t try it, it’s going to be a decade,” Robertson said.

“My concern about not taking a step is that we will stall this process and not move it along. I’d like to give staff some sort of basis for keeping it moving,” Fabre said.

Planning for DLI was spearheaded at the Canalino School campus, but as the proposal has been considered by the school board, questions have been raised about whether to also offer it at Aliso School. the program—how many classrooms and where—as well as staffing. At its previous meeting, the school board had asked about the potential for shifting teachers around to different grade levels to accommodate the new program. DLI planners lacked a green light from the school board, so it became difficult to answer staffing questions without knowing how to staff a non-existent program.

Impassioned parents have pressured the district to launch the program for months. Maureen Claffey, who has a preschool aged daughter, used her own experience in CUSD to highlight the need to offer new forms of cutting-edge academic instruction. “I felt embarrassed, frankly, when I went to my first English class and got a D back on my first college paper. I had been a star student at Carpinteria High School,” she said.

Parents have argued that the new program would attract more students to stay in the district rather than attending private schools, and DLI would generate enthusiasm for the schools within the community.

Board President Andy Sheaffer commented that adding students would actually hurt the school district’s budget. CUSD does not receive funding per pupil; it’s based on property taxes. He also commented that if the end goal is to teach students Spanish than maybe the district should offer Spanish in elementary school.

Starting next fall, a committee will be formed throughout the district to work out the kinks. Superintendent Micheline Miglis, who will head the committee, has been a proponent of DLI.

Home prices raise in-lieu fees

A steady uptick in the real estate market drove the City of Carpinteria to readjust its in-lieu affordable housing fee once again. The city council at its April 11 meeting increased the fee to $337,200 for single-family dwellings and $145,000 for condos. In certain circumstances, developers can pay the in-lieu fees as an alternative to constructing below market rate units, an element of the city’s Inclusionary Housing Requirements.

Obituaries

In 2015, 62 single family homes and 97 condominiums were sold in Carpinteria. The median sale price for homes was $803,500, up from $775,000 in 2014.

Last year’s median price for condos was $528,500, up from $495,000 in 2014. This increase, combined with the rise in Santa Barbara County median area income from $75,400 to $77,100 for a family of four, was used to develop the new in-lieu fee.

Bernie Chauvin

Bernie Chauvin has gone to that surf shop in the sky. He passed in the middle of the night April 2, 2016, one month after his 80th birthday and after a long and courageous battle with COPD. He would want to be remembered as “Bernie from the Sunshine Store.” He loved Carpinteria and all the “rug-rats” that hung out at his store. He was a very special man who touched a lot of people. He was once described by the Carpinteria Herald like this: “Bernie has a special way of relating to everyone, especially kids.”

Many people in Carpinteria don’t know that he was a 20-year Veteran of the Air Force, living all over the world.

That was one of the reasons he quickly recognized Carpinteria as paradise and settled here in 1980. Bernie leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Mazie, daughters DeLys Chauvin (Darby Tyndall), Danae Chauvin-Couture (Mark) and grandson Mike Weinberg.

There is no service planned for him as he has donated his body to USC Medical School. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers; please make a donation to the charity of your choice in his name.

Bernardo Hidalgo Jr. 1/20/1935 – 3/29/2016

Bernardo Hidalgo, 81, of Lompoc, Calif. passed away on March 29, 2016.

Bernardo was born in El Paso, Texas on Jan. 20, 1935. He moved with his family to Santa Barbara County as an infant.

Benny, as he was known, worked for the City of Carpinteria as Public Works Supervisor for 30 years. He was a well known and respected person in the community. He dedicated his time to coaching youth sports/CYAA and serving as baseball umpire, one of his deep passions. As a young man he had the opportunity to try out for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Benny was known for his strength, kindness and compassion. His support of family and friends in need was one of his most admirable qualities.

Bernardo is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Norma Roig-Hidalgo.

He is also survived by his daughters Teresa Fajardo (Sal), Sandra Hernandez (Wally), son Martin Hidalgo, and stepson Enrique Roig (Julia); two surviving sisters Romelia Alvarado, Lydia Rodriquez; and four surviving brothers Miguel Hidalgo, Gilberto Hidalgo, Moises Hidalgo and Carlos Hidalgo. Bernardo also leaves behind a legacy of seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Bernardo was preceded in death by his parents Bernardo and Dolores Hidalgo; brother Ignacio Hidalgo and sister Hope Serna.

Services were held in Santa Maria.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”

Halos Pitchforks Wildlife park

Campers at the state beach reported that a wild and wooly woman, 39, was banging on RVs at 3 a.m. on April 2. Deputies tracked her down and learned that she had imbibed several glasses of wine at two local establishments. Somewhere on her walk home to her Carpinteria Avenue motel she was sidetracked and ended up in the campground, where she stumbled about seeking something. She could not tell deputies where she was, so they brought her to jail to keep her safe.

Hamburglar

Deputies received a report of a crazed man demanding food at the takeout window of a Linden Avenue hamburger shack at 2:45 p.m. on April 2. The trouble was he hadn’t ordered any food. When a deputy arrived, the man appeared to be talking to nobody at the window. Since the restaurant was crowded, the officer beckoned the man, 19, to the sidewalk.

The man, whom restaurant employees suspected was on drugs, didn’t listen.

The officer then approached the man and attempted to direct him to the curb by his arm. The man reportedly yelled, “Don’t touch me,” and took on a fighting stance, so the officer was more forceful in taking the man down to the ground on the sidewalk. No injuries were reported, and the man was brought to jail for resisting arrest.

Marijuana registration

A woman officers pulled over for a dead brake light at Ogan and Vallecito roads at 2:30 a.m. on April 4 allegedly made a boneheaded snafu in handing over her vehicle registration. When the deputy unfolded the paperwork, he found that it contained marijuana. He

showed the greenery to the woman, and she reportedly admitted it was marijuana.

She also came clean and said there was more weed in the car.

Deputies then searched the vehicle and found more than additional marijuana.

There was a small amount of meth and a razor blade in the woman’s purse. According to the deputy report, razor blades can be used to crush crystal meth to facilitate users ingesting the drug through the nostril cavity.

When the officer slapped the cuffs on the woman for possession of meth, the man who was her passenger, 23, asked what was going on. Upon being informed of the meth, the man called out, “It’s mine,” and voluntarily placed his hands behind his back to prepare for cuffing.

Additionally, deputies suspected he was under the influence of drugs due to his dilated pupils and rapid cadence. He was arrested for the drugs and being under the influence.

The recycling conundrum Cvn

living the green life erin maker As most of you are aware, part of my job is managing the City of Carpinteria’s Solid Waste Program. Part of that is the day-to-day stuff like making sure that trash service is available to the community, but it also means paying attention to broader things that most of us never have to think about. One of those is recycling as a commodity and what the future of recycling looks like.

Growing up, curbside recycling wasn’t something that was available to us. Recycling centers existed, but you had to bring your waste to them and separate it yourself. But even those were a new thing, born out of necessity as landfills around the country began to reach capacity. Prior to the 1940s, most things that could be reused were salvaged, especially during times of war when there were shortages.

But peacetime and prosperity brought a growing problem to the landscape: trash.

Bottles were the first thing to enter the recycling market in the early 1970’s, and in 1980 a small city in New Jersey by the name of Woodbury implemented the first curbside recycling program, a concept that soon gained traction and spread to other cities and counties around the country. Today, curbside recycling is something we don’t give a lot of thought to outside of placing our recyclables in the blue bin and putting them out for collection on pickup day.

But the future of recycling is something we should think about. A lot of the things that get put in our blue carts might not be recyclable in the future. Recycling is a commodities market, and like all commodities markets, it can change over time.

Things like cardboard and cans are pretty stable markets and much more easily recycled. Some glass is recyclable, but not all. Food contaminated paper waste isn’t recyclable at all, but is compostable if you have a composting program. And plastics are a story of their own.

Plastics haven’t been around for a long time, but we use them for everything.

They play a very important role in the medical world keeping equipment and healthcare environments sterile. They allow us to conveniently buy packaged meats and vegetables, and allow us to make sporting equipment more lightweight and safer. However, because there are so many manufacturers of plastic, and so many types, they are more difficult to recycle. And this is something we should all be thinking about because the more we use plastic, the more likely we are to have problems with it ending up in the environment.

One thing that I have mentioned before is the different labels on plastics and what they mean. Biodegradable, compostable, 100 percent recyclable, green, made with

recycled content—these are buzz words that make us feel great about our purchase. However, there is no regulation on some of this language, which makes us susceptible to something known as ‘greenwashing,’ a form of marketing that deceptively puts an environmental spin on products that may not actually have any environmental benefit.

Because of the multiple types of plastics made with different materials, it can be difficult for them to be recycled. Most of our recyclables are shipped overseas to places like China where they are sorted through and processed. This is creating a growing problem for China, which recently cracked down on what materials it would take, something that created a problem for recycling companies around the world.

The future of recycling for some materials in uncertain, but one thing we can do is pay attention to the products we are purchasing and how they are packaged.

I try to repurpose things as much as possible, and not buy unnecessary items to cut down on my personal waste stream.

While we are lucky to have a robust recycling program here in Carpinteria, it is important to think about the future of our planet as a whole.

roll them inside the main kitchen for five bucks. Much to my family’s dismay, I returned home that Saturday afternoon to announce I was now employed as a prep cook. After hearing a few more of mom’s recognizable screams, I took off my rollerblades and with a giant smile gave her a kiss and said thank you.

For parents of similarly reckless children, there are ways to harness this sort of energy. Here are a few obvious signs I showed early on that I had a desire to be in the kitchen.

• Watching hours of culinary television. Growing up it was either re-runs on PBS of Julia Child showing me how to artfully hack a chicken, the knife wielding skills of Chinese cuisine Chef Martin Yan or watching the culinary art of Chef Jacques Pepin.

• Love of markets. My favorite place to go with my family was by far the grocery store. I took the lead and traveled down

the aisles with ease, grabbing items left and right. Though mom had little knowledge of anything I was buying, she let shopping become a “chore” I happily took over.

• Open palate. Is your 5-year-old excited to try sea urchin when you go out for sushi? Does your 10-year-old reference how much she prefers the taste of pasta with pesto to the flavors of Ragu?

It’s rare for a kid to smell let alone taste “out of the norm” cuisine, encourage that as much as you can!

• Spends a large amount of time in your home kitchen, actually cooking. I learned to use a chef’s knife early on and my tiny hands grew used to sautéing over the high flames of our home range. Don’t get too worried when your child desires to master recipes and kitchen skills 100 percent hands on. Even if your kid decides not to become a chef when they grow up, the passion to cook is one to definitely

I begged, I pleaded, I even offered to do extra chores—all for a pair of rollerblades when I was 12. But no matter how hard I tried, I could never get my mom to give in to my requests. My entire family correctly assumed that if you gifted me wheels of any kind, I’d find a way to get into trouble. I suppose it was justified after the Toys “R” Us episode of 1989.

I may or may not have hijacked a Little Tykes wagon when I was 6 and driven it outside into the store parking lot. After remembering the sound of my mom’s screams, I figured it was a shot in the dark seven years later asking for any sort of mobility.

BY ALONZO OROZCO There was a flurry of athletic activity playing out in Cate School sports venues on April 8. It all started in the late afternoon with Simi Valley making a trip up to the Cate Mesa to take on the Rams in boys lacrosse.

With midfielder Pierce Lundt winning the majority of the face offs at midfield, Cate got out to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. When attackman Cole Brennan scored in the opening seconds of the second quarter, the home team took a 6-2 lead. But the Pioneers showed a little firepower of their own, after Griffin Rodas scored his second goal within two minutes, which sandwiched a goal by teammate Evan Miles, the lead was trimmed to one, at 6-5.

The Rams would then take advantage of a couple of Simi Valley penalties with midfielder Peter Marcus and attackman Keller Mochel scoring goals within seconds of each other to move the lead back to three, 8-5. However, the Pioneers responded as Rodas gave a perfect feed

Meanwhile, up at the gym, Channel Islands was getting the jump on Cate in boys volleyball, building a 22-15 lead in the first game of the match. The Raiders would go on to win game one, 25-17. In the second game, Chase McCaw’s set to Morgan Pierce led to a Pierce kill to tie the game at 4-4; and the Rams would then take a 5-4 lead.

Coming into the match with a 12-1 overall record, Channel Islands would then show why they were at the top of the Pacific View League. With captain Joshua Carin serving, the Raiders quickly turned the game around, and Cate suddenly found itself down 9-5. Using a variety of angle hits, the visitors pulled ahead 16-9 after a Carin spike. They closed out game two by a score of 25-16 to go up 2-0.

of Carlos Cortes, the Raiders went on a five-point run to make it a 13-4 game. The home team twice got to within seven but ended up dropping the final game by a 25-15 score and were swept 3-0.

The Rams ended up sweeping Malibu a few days before to go 1-1 for the week, and even with the loss Cate coach Greg Novak was pleased with the team’s performance. “Even though we beat Malibu, I liked the intensity and play that we had today more,” said Novak. “(The Rams) had drive and motivation, they were going after the ball, they were hustling; so

everything about their game was really good,” he added. Cate falls to 6-3 on the year, but is still very much alive in the Tri-Valley League at 6-1.

Back at the field, the lacrosse team walked off the wet turf with a win.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the two teams were tied 9-9. “Senior Cole Brennan scored two of his seven goals in the final six minutes of the game to give the Rams the lead and to seal the victory over Simi Valley, 11-9,” said Cate coach Philip Keebler. Cate improves to 4-5 on the year, 1-0 in the Condor League.

April 7 - The Cate School girls lacrosse team picked up another win against La Reina in the rain by a score of 15-6. The Rams’ Brie Walker picked up eight draw controls, one interception, five forced turnovers, two assists and two goals. Sam Hill continued to lead the midfield, offense and defense with one draw control, five forced turnovers, two assists and four goals. Katherine Grossman had two draw controls, six forced turnovers, five ground balls, two assists and three goals. Hannah Barr also registered one draw control and three ground balls.

April 5 - The Cate School boys tennis team improved to 3-3 (2-1 in the Tri-Valley League) with a 14-4 victory over rival Carpinteria. The Rams were led in singles by junior Kevin Ha and sophomore Nicolas Hildebrandt with sweeps at numbers one and two singles. The number-one doubles team of senior Michael Nettesheim/ junior Christian Herman and number-two doubles team of freshman Brad Gordon/ sophomore Charlie Morris also swept all three rounds.

April 2 – The Cate School boys lacrosse team beat Stevenson of Pebble Beach in their annual meeting by a score of 14-13. “Senior Christian Burke controlled the face-off X, allowing the Rams to keep the pressure on the Pirates’ defense throughout the game,” said Ram coach Philip Keebler. Seniors Cole Brennan, Keller Mochel and Jack Pruitt each scored goals within the last three minutes of the third quarter to give Cate a 12-8 lead. Brennan led all scorers with six points (three goals and three assists); Mochel had four goals and one assist, while Pruitt had four goals. Senior Peter Marcus had two goals and one assist and junior Chris Figueroa had 13 saves in goal.

April 5 – The Cate School boys lacrosse team hosted Peninsula, the number-eight ranked team in the region, falling by a score of 16-11 on the Mesa. “Credit juniors Christian Burke and Pierce Lundt, seniors Isaiah Washington and Peter Marcus for stepping up and getting our offense the ball,” said Ram coach Philip Keebler. Senior Cole Brennan led the team with three goals and two assists. Marcus and senior Keller Mochel each had four points. Senior Cem Basar scored two goals, and junior goalie Chris Figueroa finished with 11 saves.

April 7 - The Cate School baseball team had its final non-league tune up against College Prep at home, falling to the Cougars from Oakland 3-2. Junior Dylan Ell paced the Rams at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Junior Bryce Huerta also had an RBI and a hit, while freshman Jack Deardorff had a hit. Sophomore Patrick Armstrong had a double on the afternoon. Freshman Ethan Cassulo took over on the mound for the first time in his baseball career, throwing three innings in relief.

Mikela Keefer won the 800, 1600 and 3200. Annalisa DeAlba won the shot put and discus. Monique Sanchez was the only other winner for the Warriors with a seasonal best of nine feet in the pole vault.

Chance Wright was the only double winner in the boys, taking the 110 high hurdles and tied for first with teammate Brian Buchmiller in the pole vault.

April 5 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team traveled south to Santa Clara and was able to stay in control throughout the match, taking the win in the third set. Warrior setter Eduardo Rodriguez started off the game with a 14-point service run. Outside hitter Mayerik Rodriguez had 12 kills and eight digs. Outside hitter Armando Soriano provided 10 kills and eight digs. “Starting libero Giovanni Arciniega helped secure the match with excellent communication and 15 digs,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia.

April 7 - The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team traveled to Fillmore and returned home with a three-game sweep of the Flashes. “Dominating outside hitter Armando Soriano provided grade ‘A’ communication and an unstoppable swing at the net,” said Warrior coach Dino Garcia. Soriano ended the night with 13 kills and 12 digs. Outside hitter Mayerick Rodriguez yielded 11 kills. Starting libero Giovanni Arciniega added 16 digs.

April 7 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team played in its third Frontier League event of the year, which was won again by Malibu. The Sharks’ Quincey Allen led with a 74 at the par-70 Santa Barbara Golf Club. “The Warriors continued to improve, led by sophomore Alex Cisneros with a 106 and breaking 600 as a team for the first time this year,” said Carpinteria coach Steve Benzin. Sebastian Beltran and Juan Salcedo each shot a 115 to tie for second in the Warrior team scoring. Elder Santillan was next with a 122.

April 4 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team lost a non-league match to Ventura, 12-6. In doubles, the Warriors number-two team: Sam Truax/Luke Nahooikaika played together for the first time, and swept all of their sets. Number-three Kirby Zapata/Solomon Nahooikaika also picked up a doubles win and nearly came away with a second falling just short. In singles, Carpinteria’s number-two Bryan Taira, playing solo for the first time this year, went 1-2. Number-three Jeremy Saito also went 1-2 picking up the final point for the Warriors.

April 5 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team ran into a powerful Cate squad, losing 14-4 in a Tri-Valley League (TVL) match. In singles, the Warriors’ number-two Jeremy Saito and number-three Bryan Taira both picked up a win each.

In doubles, number-one Myles Morgan/Luke Nahooikaika and number-two Sam Truax/Jacob Ascencio each picked up a set. “We really showed a lot of character and determination, but it just did not translate over to the win column,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant.

April 7 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team did not beat the rain nor Thacher, falling in a Tri-Valley League match by a score of 16-2. The Warriors number-three Jeremy Saito beat the Toads number-three, and then took out their number-one player, 6-3. “Number-three Sam Truax/Jacob Ascencio played well and were hanging in there in all three of their sets,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant. “As much as our record does not show it, I am happy with how our team is performing,” added Bryant.

April 11 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team lost to Tri-Valley League leader Malibu, 14-4. The Warriors number-three team of Bryan Taira/Sam Truax won two of their sets, but lost one to the Sharks number-one team, giving up a mid-set lead. In singles, number-three Jeremy Saito won the other two points for Carpinteria as he beat the number-one and number-three players for Malibu. “We just lacked an overall consistency, but when we played well we were hanging in there, especially doubles,” said Warrior coach Charles Bryant. “Our boys are growing up quickly, and getting a lot of great experience against many solid teams,” added Bryant.

The Rams’ defense was led by Taylor Bigony with three forced turnovers and five ground balls, Charlotte Pecot who had three forced turnovers and three ground balls, Eva Herman who picked up five ground balls and Morgan Prinz who registered two forced turnovers and three ground balls. Sam Hill led the midfield with six draw controls, six ground balls, three turnovers and three goals. Brie Walker had one goal, five assists, three ground balls and two draw controls. “Katherine Grossman was speedy and aggressive,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta. She had four goals, four ground balls and two assists.

Warriors leadoff batter Malcolm Gordon collected three of the team’s seven hits and reached base in each of his four at bats. Carpinteria High School senior Eduardo “Lalo” Delgado was praised for his soccer and academic accomplishments during an April 6 signing ceremony at the school library. Delgado, a four-year CHS soccer player and former member of national champion Santa Barbara Soccer club team, signed on the dotted line to attend Westmont College next season. He was joined for the photo by Westmont assistant coach and head recruiter Johnny Whallon.

At Playa Del Sur 4-H’s April meeting, guest speaker Rick Shade from Shade Farm Management spoke to the group about crop management, pest control and careers in agriculture. “Members learned a lot about how management skills can be very useful in a wide variety of careers,” reported club member Erika Estrada.

Playa Del Sur 4-H club also had guest Sheila Shank discuss Camp Wahoo and other Santa Barbara County 4-H events. In addition to the guest speakers, member Giselle Estrada gave a presentation on the proper attire for showing our livestock at Santa Barbara Fair & Exposition. “Members had a good time at their meeting and are excited to show their livestock animals at Santa Barbara Fair & Expo at the end of April,” Erika Estrada stated. BUILDING INSPECTOR Under the direction of the Director of Community Development Director, this position implements building inspection functions and participates in complex and technical associated with review and checking plans and specifications to ensure compliance with pertinent codes and accepted construction practices.

The position also administers City’s Building Ordinance related to the conduct of building inspections; reviews and examines plan and specifications; performs technical field inspections and construction checks of building and other structures in enforcing various codes and laws; performs public works inspections; enforces safety regulations and performs a variety of technical and complex tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

This position performs routine to complex inspections of existing buildings and new construction for compliance with approved plans and adopted building codes. The incumbent also communicates corrections, answers questions and investigates complaints.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree with major course in civil engineering, architecture or related field or equivalent. Specialized training in building inspection, code enforcement, plan checking, building permit

Related course work in building code and related subjects and a minimum of five years’ experience as a building inspector. Experience in building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical plan check.

NOTE: A work experience as a building contractor alone is NOT qualifying. ICC Certification is required.

The salary range for this position is $58,248.42 - $80,093.25. Salary is supplemented by an attractive benefits package.

Speakers at Friends of the Library’s annual meetings have ranged from gourmet chefs to nautical history authors, and this year the group dedicated to supporting Carpinteria Library landed a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist to report on climate change. Ken Weiss delivered a riveting talk to a full house at the Carpinteria Community Church on the evening of April 7. Weiss has traveled to Kiribati, a collection of low-lying atolls in the Equatorial Pacific, to see how climate change is affecting the nation’s residents. He also covered the climate talks in Paris last year. His findings impressed upon the audience how very dire the situation is and how critical the need for world leaders to act in the interest of future generations.

Ken Weiss, whose environmental reporting for the Los Angeles Times won him a Pulitzer Prize in 2007, presents an educational and entertaining slideshow centered on climate change.

Sometimes a movie’s story does all the work. “Zero Dark Thirty” is an example: The story of how Bin Laden got taken down, by itself, is enough to draw us in.

Or even “The Big Short”—I’m pretty sure it could have been played by sock puppets and I still would have been interested (and pissed off!).

“Eye in the Sky” feels like one of these movies. It is not based on a true story (though stuff like this surely happens), but it only has like four sets and it is focused on a single incident. So it is the story, plus whatever tangled up complications it engenders, that is center stage.

That story is about a British-led (U.S. assisted) drone operation in East Africa.

A couple of biggish terrorists (though not Bin Laden big) are meeting, and the British military is hoping to capture them.

But things do not go quite as planned, and so the capture mission soon becomes a bomb-them-into-oblivion mission.

The problem is, right before drone pilot Steve Watts (Aaron Paul) drops the bomb, a cute little girl who did nothing to nobody, and who for cuteness’ sakes was just playing with a hula-hoop, walks into the danger zone. Colonel Katherine Powell (Helen Mirren), who is in charge of the mission, and her superior, Lt. General Frank Benson (Alan Rickman), still say go for it. But Watts holds up a sec. Everyone hopes the girl will just go back home. But in the meantime every single person in the British government, it seems, waffles back and forth, calls his or her superior, and argues about whether or not they should do it anyway.

On the one hand, a terrorist attack is imminent—dozens of innocent lives are at stake. On the other hand, there’s the girl, and she is so damn cute.

All this hand wringing over what to do feels a little odd. Don’t I hear about civilian casualties from these drone strikes like every other day? Isn’t it: “12 civilians die in strike in Yemen that kills two terrorists”; “Seven children die in Libya”; “Scores of civilians die in bombed hospital where there were no terrorists at all and they just went for it anyway”?

It’s kind of hard for me to believe that the military higher ups really are stressing that much over an innocent life here or there.

But who knows, maybe I am wrong.

Maybe each hula-hooper gets her own mini day in court before the Hellfire missile comes raining down. (Then I kind of want to know why so many civilians are dying!)

At any rate, “Eye in the Sky” is nothing if not tense. But unfortunately a lot of that tension comes from the excruciating indecisiveness of its characters. That’s not exactly fun to watch. When I witness

two friends bicker for half an hour over where we should eat dinner, it’s tense all right, but it’s not exactly edge-of-my-seat, pins and needles material. Half of “Eye in the Sky” is various British higher ups saying, “Yes, we should do it. O.K. let’s do it,” then, “No, wait, we have a moral obligation … let’s not do it,” then, “But consider the costs!” then, “But think of the children!” and so on. Of course I know all of this is very important stuff, and worthy of careful consideration, but I’m not sure how much of it I can watch. Part of me wanted to reach through the screen and pull the trigger so we could just get on with our lives.

I guess that is the point, though. This stuff is not comfortable. It is easier to just go home, like a drone pilot after a hard day’s work, than it is to stay engaged with the tough issues. In a sense, we are the eyes in the sky, observing what is going on. We can and often do just turn a blind eye—embracing our detachment from bombs going off in East Africa, the Middle East or wherever. But that hardly frees us from guilt.

This is all interesting stuff. And the whole point about our detachment from the carnage we inflict deserves careful attention. But a lot of this does not come through very vividly in “Eye in the Sky.” To me, the movie comes across as either, or sometimes both, of two extremes: Either glorifying military leaders for taking collateral damage super duper seriously, or as pushing a very naïve, hula-hoopersmust-not-die critique of war. And, even setting aside the philosophical flat-footedness here, all this really does detract from how compelling the story is. So, one way or another, “Eye in the Sky” ends up falling short.

“Eye in the Sky” is rated R for some violent images and language.

The seals were frightened into the water three times by beachwalkers, by a father and son climbing down the cliff toward the seals, by a kayaker and by a helicopter.

Natural History Notes

The harbor seal sanctuary area provides a haven to many additional species which would be seen much less frequently if people were on the beach. Sea lions are frequent visitors, an elephant seal came ashore, and one day over 100 pelicans came to rest.

Island girls peruse pagodas

Judy Mulford and her daughter Lei-Ann Salter spent three weeks in January and February traveling through Myanmar (formerly Burma) and Thailand. Myanmar, the most unspoiled corner of Asia, has been isolated from the world for decades.

Here, the girls visited many of over 2,000 mysterious pagodas, temples encrusted with gold, and cruised the Irrawaddy River. In Thailand, they rode elephants, rafted down the River Kwai, visited Hellfire Pass and explored more ancient temples.
