Sheriff’s office warns of credit card skimmers

Thieves have used devices at gas stations recently to steal credit card information from unsuspecting customers. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a recent trend with several instances in Carpinteria. Identity theft is a national problem that is significantly affecting citizens in Santa Barbara County.

The skimming devices are illegally placed at fuel pumps and capture credit/debit card information when unsuspecting customers swipe their cards to pay for gas. The thieves then use the stolen information to commit identity theft and other financial crimes. Losses from an undetected single illegal skimming device on a fuel pump can be between $50,000 and $100,000. The sheriff’s department recommends paying inside the gas station whenever possible and looking for broken seals around the fuel pump’s payment interface to detect whether it has been tampered with.

Council restricts vacation rentals to beach neighborhood

A vocal crowd peppering the April 25 meeting with shouts of “no caps” failed to dissuade the Carpinteria City Council from approving vacation rental regulations eight months in the making.

The approved zoning ordinance will restrict vacation rentals to the beach neighborhood and create 35 non-conforming rentals in the downtown area.

Vacation rentals will be permitted in the highest concentration closest to the beach, where there is a historic precedent among the higher density apartment and condominium complexes. More restrictive caps will be placed closer to the railroad tracks where more of the properties are single family homes.

Home stays, in which the owner must be present during the rental period, will be allowed throughout Carpinteria, except in mobile home parks. The new ordinance will cap the number of guests in a home stay at four and restrict the number of guest vehicles to one.

Non-conforming vacation rentals that have been permitted and paying city taxes since October 2013 will be allowed a five-year amortization. City staff anticipates that 20 units will qualify.

Passage of the ordinance required a unanimous vote by the bare bones council. Councilmembers Brad Stein and Wade Nomura had recused themselves from the issue due to potential conflicts of interest. Stein’s wife manages an apartment complex in the beach neighborhood, and Nomura’s wife is a local real estate agent.

Mayor Gregg Carty argued against the restrictive caps, but Councilman Al Clark, the staunchest council advocate for restrictions since the discussion came to the dais last August, held his ground.

“I look at it as a nightmare to enforce,” Carty said, of proposed restrictions.

“I look at it as a nightmare to lose one more unit of long-term housing,” Clark responded.

Despite a seemingly comfortable 18-month window before the moratorium would be lifted, review by the California Coastal Commission, which is required for a zone code amendment, can take many months or over a year. “even with a one-year extension (on the moratorium), we could be pressed for time,” City Manager Dave Durflinger said. finding the appropriate balance between visitor and long-term housing has not come easily for the City of Carpinteria. The council failed to reach a consensus in February when the first proposed vacation rental ordinance, which allowed for short-term rentals in pockets throughout downtown Carpinteria, was considered.

It’s an issue that other municipalities around the world also have faced recently with the increasing popularity of web platforms that facilitate short-term rentals.

Proponents of more restrictive regulations have pointed out that Carpinteria’s long-term rental vacancy is nearly zero, and conversions of long-term rentals to short-term rentals are reducing the availability of workforce housing. Neighbors of vacation rentals have bemoaned their deleterious effects on once-peaceful single family neighborhoods. “Vacation rentals are really a commercial use plunked in the middle of a residential neighborhood,” said Gail Marshall.

As public meetings on the matter have continued, however, the opposite side has raised its voice. Local business

owners, short-term rental owners and beach neighborhood property owners have said that tightened restrictions will bring down property values and reduce the number of tourists spending money in local shops. rachel Nunez, owner Blue Orchid Boutique, said that her business has been down and she has to work a second job.

“If you feel that tourism isn’t important,” she said to the council and crowd, “… then I need every one of you to come in and shop in my business.”

Local real estate agent Lynn Gates said that more and more people are purchasing Carpinteria properties as second homes and renting them to visitors on occasion. She said that rather than add to the long-term housing stock, a restrictive ordinance would likely result in more second homes sitting vacant and fewer visitors to downtown businesses.

“We are always going to have tourists,” said Councilmember Clark. The city now has 607 hotel rooms, 210 campsites and 182 licensed vacation rentals. A development application for a new 110-room hotel on the west end of Via real was submitted last week.

Clark has long argued that because existing city zoning code only allows for short-term rentals in planned urban development, commercial and resort zones, any vacation rental operations in residential areas have been illegal, even though the city itself has permitted it. “The action we are taking now is to legally permit short-term rentals, with restrictions,” he said.

State of Community covers all bases

snippets of what’s happening in Carpinteria at various levels of government and within local public agencies are annually stitched together at the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s state of the Community to create a big picture visual in under two hours. This year’s event, held on april 22 at Rincon beach Club, had a sold-out crowd feasting on lunch while getting informed. Coastal View News delivers the highlights.

City of Carpinteria

Mayor Gregg Carty reported on several recent accomplishments and upcoming projects.

• The city will study the feasibility of an inn and restaurant development on the east end of the amtrak station parking lot. other plans for that area include a community garden in the vacant lot on the west side of the parking lot, additional parking across the tracks, as well as a pedestrian path connecting Holly and linden avenues.

• A development application was submitted to the city last week for a 110-room hotel where the former nazarene Church now stands on Via Real.

•Along with the sanitary and water districts, the city is considering a recycled water project to inject highly treated wastewater back into the groundwater table.

• The Linden-Casitas Interchange ProjRobin KaRlsson ect is expected to be completed in 2020 and Mayor Gregg Carty presented on the highway widening through Carpinte- his perspective of Carpinteria ria in 2022. (Though the city council’s santa today and tomorrow. barbara County associated Governments representative al Clark later reported that the widening project will be postponed by a year due to lack of funds.)

• A world-class skatepark is in the works for the city hall property, and a new grant-funded play area is scheduled to be built at Memorial Park.

• Recently, the city has seen applications for developments on resort-zoned properties on the Carpinteria bluffs that have “missed the mark,” according to Carty.

• City finances are in good shape, but the big challenge now and into the future will be funding street maintenance with stagnant revenue streams.

• Carpinteria real estate is still down about 15 to 18 percent from the previous peak in 2008.

• The rental vacancy rate is .55 percent “There are really not many rental properties out there.”

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department

Lt. Mike Perkins, chief of police services in Carpinteria, gave a brief update on law enforcement locally.

• Despite “misconceptions” about police, local law enforcement is “as progressive as it can possibly be.”

• To establish a closer connection to the community, a Carpinteria citizens academy will soon be offered, and the department will continue its Coffee with a Cop program.

Perkins hopes to get more deputies out of their cars and interacting with the public. “building those local lines of communication, that’s our vision.”

Carpinteria Unified School District

superintendent Micheline Miglis reported on the state of the school district.

• A new program Miglis touted is the Get Focused, Stay Focused program that helps students craft 10-year plans for college and career pathways.

• Still in her first year on the job, Miglis said she is “going to great lengths to repair fragmented relationships.” she reported that administrators are working collaboratively with the teachers union now for the good of students.

• School improvements funded by Measure U, a $90 million bond initiative that voters approved in 2014, are underway and will continue for decades to come.

Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District

Interim Fire Chief Jim Rampton talked about what’s to come in the fire district.

• A Standards of Coverage Study contracted by the district should be completed soon. Rampton said that the study will provide extensive information about the district, so that “when we come to you again” with a bond measure, the public will have all its questions answered.

• Businesses have reported that they have been charged for fire inspections, which Rampton said is a free service that should only be completed by the fire district.

• This year’s wildland fire risk is high given the prolonged drought. The district has a fuel reduction program for the wildland interface. To find out more, call the district at 684-4591. “Fires are going to happen, but we need to be able to control them.”

First District supervisor salud Carbajal kept his quips to a minimum and gave the audience an overview of county achievements and challenges.

• On the list of five-year capital projects are the santa Claus lane beach improvements. The project aims to add 112 additional parking spaces, restrooms, trash cans, landscaping and bike racks in the beach and commercial areas. a controversial element of the plan is the construction of fencing and a single railroad crossing point to access the beach. “Right now there is no legal access and it’s quite dangerous,” Carbajal said. a community meeting to discuss the project is scheduled for Thursday, May 19 at 6 p.m. at Rincon Catering.

• A long term water supply study is underway, along with a Community Choice Energy Feasibility study, which the City of Carpinteria is also a part of.

• The last two phases of Highway 101 Robin KaRlsson widening will heavily involve the county.

First District Supervisor Salud • Remediation of Summerland’s Becker Carbajal told the crowd that the Well, an orphan well found to be leaking county is working hard to maintain oil along the shore, is on the county’s a balanced budget while providing priority list.

• Property taxes are up but gas taxes myriad services. are down, both of which factor strongly into the county budget.

• Ongoing challenges are pension costs, reduced state funding for roads, securing funds for the 101 widening, north County Jail construction and mental health inpatient costs.

• A Summer Youth Employment project housed in Carpinteria is being piloted this year.

Economic news

Peter Rupert of the UCSB Economic Forecast Project provided notes on Carpinteria’s economic position.

• Production of goods, the largest Carpinteria employment category, grew by 10 percent last year. other major sectors, farms, and leisure and hospitality jobs, dropped a bit.

• “Carpinteria basically has the lowest unemployment rate around.” Unemployment locally is at 4.3 percent (seasonally adjusted) compared to santa barbara’s 4.92 percent.

• Housing prices have continued to grow at about 5 percent. “The real estate market is very, very tight. it’s basically the tightest in santa barbara County.”

Dix Alan Dolge died peacefully on April 8, 2016 at his home in Carpinteria, Calif. with his family by his side.

Dix was born on Oct. 29, 1930 to Georgia McDougall and Henry Dolge in Ventura, Calif. He was the younger brother to June Lauters, who predeceased him. Dix grew up in Ventura, but spent most of his summers in Dayton, Ore. working on his aunt and uncle’s farm, water skiing and fishing with his best friend and cousin.

Dix moved to Oregon for high school and graduated from Dayton High School in 1948. After graduation he served four years with the Navy Seabees, stationed in Guam for two years. He then came home to Ventura and soon met his future wife. Dix and Janice Banks were married on Nov. 28, 1954 at El Montecito Church.

Dix was employed by General Telephone as an installer in 1956 and later became a switchboard operator, switch repairman and ended his career as a line troubleshooter. He retired after 32 years of perfect attendance.

Dix always enjoyed being a part of his community. He was a member of the Santa Barbara Moose Lodge and played drums in their drum and bugle core. Dix was a ham radio operator and had the call name CVT, Carpinteria Valley Thumper.

As an operator he communicated with people all over the USA. Dix was an avid fisherman fishing in both the ocean and many fresh water lakes and rivers. He loved traveling with his family, especially when they went camping.

Family and friends were very important to Dix, and he remembered the details of all his acquaintances.

Dix is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janice Dolge, his four children Creig Dolge, Jim Dolge, LuAnn Ames and Holley Galer, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on May 7 at 2 p.m. at the Carpinteria Community Church, where Dix was a longtime member. All gifts in memory of Dix can be made to the Carpinteria Community Church Memorial Hand Bell Choir.

Nimmer is human, too CVN barks and bites

My “Man on the Street” column about barking dogs in the pickup was criticized in a letter to the editor (CVN, April 21). I’m happy when my column makes people think, informs them or gives people a chuckle. I try to avoid the bland questions and answers, but it’s not easy coming up with a new question every week for over 10 years.

I love our small town because things like barking dogs in a pickup can be one of the town’s “big” controversies. The letter criticized me for having an agenda against the dogs, but I was happy to report more people in favor of the dogs than against them. BTW, I’m sorry if the dogs’ owner’s feelings were hurt. Basically, I tried to give him some feedback on his noteworthy town cruises.

Please email me if you want to suggest a future “Man on the Street” question. It needs to be something that won’t result in a “yes” or “no” answer and that most people in town would be able to answer with an interesting comment.

Louis leaves the City

By Maureen FoLey since 1986, louis Mendoza has helped keep the City of Carpinteria running smoothly, from the inside out. That’s because he started working for the Public Works Department 30 years ago. since then, mayors, tourists and baby seals have come and gone, but Mendoza has remained the rock of the maintenance teams that care for all aspects of the city’s infrastructure. He was not quite 30 when he got the job, and he leaves it now, older and wiser but still happy to have put in the years. “i really enjoyed my time there. i really enjoyed what i did and i love the people of Carpinteria,” said Mendoza to explain his long tenure with the City.

Mendoza’s arrival on the staff roster at City Hall was simple. He saw the job listed in the newspaper and applied for it. “i saw the ad … (i was) fortunate enough to get it,” he said.

Mendoza, who grew up in santa barbara, was living here when he applied for the job and had been working previously as a delivery driver. but did he know then that he’d be at the job for 16 years into the next century? short answer: no. “i thought i’d be there for a short duration … but it turned out real well,” he said. so, how has the job changed over the years? Mendoza claims that the work got “a lot easier” and that there is more time spent on training now, to make the job safer. He said the staff really takes care of the health and wellbeing of the workers.

When asked what advice he would give someone applying for a new job at the Public Works Department, Mendoza said, “Hang in there! it gets better.”

Mendoza credited the “nice” working environment and the dependable people as the thing that kept him on the job for so long.

What will the longtime City employee miss most? Mendoza said that he currently relished his quiet ritual of walking to work every day, from his home 10 minutes away, before the hustle and bustle of the day.

Louis Mendoza, who retired last week after 30 years as a city employee, may know Carpinteria better than anyone else in the world.

“With the ocean on my left and the mountains on my right it’s really relaxing,” he said. as for memorable days at work, Mendoza refused to isolate a particularly bad or good episode from years of repair, cleaning and more. instead, he remained upbeat about his entire career, from top to bottom.

“Every day is a good day. Every day’s been a good day for me,” he said.

While Mendoza remained mum about any great work-related anecdotes of lost keys, he knows, without a doubt, how he plans to spend his new free time.

He will continue introducing his greatgranddaughter to the great outdoors.

He said, “Hiking, the ocean, you name it. she really loves the outdoors and so do we.”

He knows that if he had to do it all over again, he would. He said, “it’s been a pretty nice life, a pretty blessed life.”

Canalino Fourth graders visit Cal Poly.

a victim of a stolen iPad tracked the tablet to a Carpinteria avenue coffee shop on april 12. Deputies entered the shop and found a 38-year-old man using the iPad, which had been stolen from a business in Montecito. The officer found it linked to the victim’s iCloud account and email, and asked the man in possession of it where he had gotten it. He said from a friend but wouldn’t provide further details. When the officer informed the man it was stolen, he said he never would have accepted it if he’d known that. since he wasn’t caught stealing, the man was arrested for possessing stolen property.

Pudintane

An officer sequestered a man for smoking a cigarette in public on april 15 on a Via Real sidewalk and after some cajoling found the man’s real name and that his smoking habit involved more than tobacco. The man, 22, first told officers he owned no iD, was born in Reno and moved to lompoc when he was 13. officers found the story curious given the man had a big “s” tattooed on one calf and a “b” on the other, probably signifying Santa Barbara. They also couldn’t find the name he had issued in their system.

The man admitted to fibbing and issued a second name that came back clean in the system.

However, the man possessed a debit card with a third name on it. He explained that his friend had let him borrow it to rent a motel room. The man admitted that he had an entirely different name than the two he had already issued and the one on the debit card. His real identity was on probation, so officers searched his motel room. in it, they found a meth pipe, meth and a ledger book with nicknames and prices generally recognizable as drug dealer bookkeeping. The man was arrested for providing fake names, one of which belonged to a childhood friend and for possession of drugs. The owner of the debit card was tracked down. He

said he’d voluntarily given the card to the man but wished it destroyed.

Bubbly burglary

Two men found the high-end champagne case unlocked at a Casitas Pass Road grocery store and allegedly took advantage of it to the tune of $1,600 in fine bubbly wine. One of the three bottles they helped themselves to was valued at $686, one at $629 and one at $285. surveillance video showed the pair entering the store at separate times before rendezvousing in the liquor aisle. an employee had unlocked the champagne case and forgotten to relock it, so the men pounced and selected the highest of the high end bottles before making their way out of the store with the bottles stowed in a brown bag within their cart.

Double down

a deputy spotted a man riding a bike and towing another alongside him on april 17 at 1:13 a.m. on linden avenue.

When the man hung a left onto Malibu Drive, he allegedly crossed the double yellow line, so the officer pursued him and asked him to pull over. The man, however, said he’d pull over as soon as he got home. The officer persisted and turned on his lights in the low-speed pursuit. With the man still refusing to yield, the officer pulled alongside the cyclist, at which point he looked at the officer, lost control of the bike and spilled onto the pavement. The second bike reportedly almost collided with the squad car. since the man had suffered abrasions, the officer brought him to the hospital before jail for eluding an officer.

Canalino fourth graders go to college

Kim D’Entremont’s fourth-grade class at Canalino school is college bound! all year the students have been learning about the importance of college, what major they want to study, where they want to attend and how they will get there. They raised over $1,300 in their first annual College Night fundraiser. Additionally, they have been communicating all year with a Cal Poly athlete pen pal. on april 21, they got to make the long voyage to san luis obispo to see Cal Poly and meet their pen pal. Their day included a tour, a lunch at the buffet and hours of talking and playing with their pen pal. “This special trip will hopefully encourage all students in room 24 to attend college as the college graduating class of 2028,” stated D’Entremont.

“The Lion King Jr.” Carpinteria Family School students have been taking their cues and rehearsing lines and songs all spring for their upcoming production of Disney’s “The Lion King Jr.” on April 29 and 30 at Carpinteria Middle School. The all-school production involves every student and many parents making costumes, props and sets for the show. “(Students) have been through tons of practices singing and dancing. They have had lots and lots of fun,” according to student reporter Jeremy Wayne Haines. New and old harmonize on Home Tour Photos by deana McMillion

Collecting ideas to improve our homes can be more interesting and entertaining than actually executing those ideas. For that reason, and many others, Carpinteria Beautiful’s annual Home and Garden Tour on the last Saturday of April is consistently one of the most popular events of the year in Carpinteria Valley. The event throws open the doors to five local homes for a self-guided tour highlighted by unique architecture, décor and landscaping. This year’s tour takes place on Saturday, April 30 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We never run out of interesting homes; we have a lot of history and we have some intriguing newer remodels that are full of fresh ideas,” said Donnie Nair, who has been the event chairperson for every one of its 19 years. “For the first time ever our featured ‘Little Gem’ is a modular home that faces the Carpinteria Salt Marsh, which makes for an ever-changing landscape and wildlife observation area right on the front porch.”

Glenna Luschei poetry award winners announced

Alison M. Bailey’s poem “The Fog Minute” earned top prize in the adult category of the Carpinteria Arts Center’s Glenna Luschei Poetry Award contest. Judges James Claffey, Maureen Foley and Mark Welborn announced the winners on April 26, and a reading for the poems and award ceremony will be held on Friday, April 29 at 6 p.m. at the Arts Center, 855 Linden Ave. Savanna Slaymaker’s untitled poem was winner in the ages 5 to 12 category, and Alexa Sisney’s poem “Carpinteria” was selected in the teen category. SB County Championship comes to Carpinteria

The Carpinteria High School track team hosted the Santa Barbara County Championships with the varsity boys finishing sixth with 39 points and the varsity girls finishing seventh with 26 points in the team competition. San Marcos and Dos Pueblos ended up one and two, respectively, for both the boys and girls squads. Warrior Chance Wright won the boys 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.20, and took fourth

in the 300 at 42.26. The Warrior girls finished third in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 55.38, and Annalisa DeAlba took second in the discus with a toss of 107-04.

Meanwhile, the Cate School track team finished fifth in the boys team scores with 45 points and the girls ended up in 15th overall with one point.

The Carpinteria United U10 girls’ soccer team recently claimed first place at the competitive Founders Cup Tournament in Torrance. Carp United overcame a first round tie against a physical Covina team and then got hot, winning their next three games by a combined score of 15-1. In order to advance to the finals, Carpinteria had to lock horns with a talented West Torrance team and managed to notch a 2-1 victory in a thrilling contest. In the championship game, the local girls blitzed San Pedro 5-0 to claim first place.

Head coach Richard Pakes said, “I was proud of our girls. They played hard and overcame some adversity during the tournament. We had a number of girls step up when we needed them, so it really was a total team effort.” Carpinteria got great goalie play from Augustine Wooten and Izzy Gragg. The defensive unit, comprised of Isela Zamora, Emma Miller, Maia Pakes and Regina Lujan, made life difficult on its opponents. “They have really bonded as a unit and they are tough to score against,” noted Pakes.

Triton U12 wins championship The Carpinteria Aquatics Club Tritons 12 and under mixed water polo team found its way to another Ventura Youth water Polo league championship, beating gold Coast Purple for the third straight time this season by a score of 10-8.

After getting off to a slow start, Carpinteria bounced back in the second quarter scoring three unanswered goals to tie the game at the end of the quarter 4-4. The Tritons continued scoring in the third quarter moving ahead by two goals before gold Coast fought its way back to take the lead 7-6 at the end of the quarter.

Carpinteria Aquatics Club would again take the lead and keep the lead to cap off its Division 2 championship victory. This season was a total team effort in that everyone improved in counterattacking, passing and swimming and shooting. The improvements made by the players really showed during Sunday’s championship game, coach Clifton Jones reported.

The team was led by main contributors Brandon Rogers, Donovan Hart, Mateo Handall, Scott Bowling, Reyn Clayton and Coby gonzalez. Also playing big were Briana Rodriguez, Alondra Badillo, Asher Smith, natalia Perez, Serena Smith and Piper Clayton.

Carpinteria Aquatics Club will relax now and think about a move up to Division 1 for the summer season in late May.

Chance Wright won both hurdle races, while Daniel Burquez won the long and triple jump. Jimmy Graves won the pole vault and set a new personal record of 13 feet, 6 inches. Yvette Zamora won both the 100 and 200, while Gaby Fantone won both hurdle races with sophomore Chloe Singer coming away with her first career varsity wins in both the triple jump and high jump.

April 20 - The Carpinteria High School baseball team won a pitcher’s duel with Bishop Diego, 3-1. The warriors rode the arm of Sal Delgado who threw 103 pitches in the complete game effort to limit the Cardinals to a single earned run. Delgado struck out 10, walked just two and allowed three hits. Bishop’s will goodwin took the loss as he struck out four in six innings and gave up seven hits, while Carpinteria scored three earned runs. Robert Warren was the leader on offense as he had two hits for the warriors and scored twice batting in the ninth position in the lineup.

April 20 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team fell to Malibu, as did the other Frontier League members, in the fifth tournament of the year at River Ridge Vineyards hosted by Santa Clara. The team was led by Alex Cisneros who shot a 108, followed by Juan Salcedo with a 114, Sebastian Beltran at 121 and James Irrabon at 135. Carpinteria finishes the season on Thursday, April 28 at Santa Paula.

April 21 - The Carpinteria High School softball team lost a Tri-Valley League game to St. Bonaventure by a score of 9-2. The Warriors scored two runs in the fifth inning on a leadoff double by Mikayla Blair who then scored on Amanda Blair’s single.

Samantha Saenz then hit a double to left centerfield to drive in another run. Amanda had two hits on the day. “The focus and execution was better than our previous game,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales whose team fell short to the two-time defending CIF Champion Seraphs.

April 21 - The Cate School boys tennis team (6-4) defeated Carpinteria on the Cate Mesa 15-3. Cate won 8-of-9 singles sets and dropped two doubles sets. Rams senior captain Michael Nettesheim and junior Kevin Ha scored a pair of sweeps in singles play. The team continues league play against Thacher on Saturday, April 30.

April 21 - The Cate School boys lacrosse team snapped its two game losing streak with a win over visiting Dos Pueblos, 15-2. Senior Jack Pruitt led the team with five goals and an assist. Senior Cole Brennan notched three goals and two assists, while seniors Christian Burke and Peter Marcus each had four points. Sophomore Will Bowlin scored twice and junior Chris Figueroa made three saves. “Junior Henry Dawson and senior Isaiah Washington had outstanding games defensively, and in transition,” said Cate coach Philip Keebler.

Girls U12 finishes third at Founders Cup After getting off to a slow start, the Carp United GU12 soccer team took third place at last weekend’s Founders Cup tournament in Torrance. Carp United came up on the wrong end of the scorecard in its first match against pacific palisades by a score of 3-0 but bounced back in the second match against a very fast and disciplined palos Verdes team that ended in a draw at 0-0.

The next morning they put on their scoring shoes and won their match against San pedro by a score of 6-0 to advance to the consolation game where they faced a very physical North Valley team. Carp united led at halftime by a score of 2-1, and after enduring injuries and illnesses, the remaining squad continued to work collectively on both ends of the field and was able to cruise to a 5-1 win and secure a third-place finish.

“We could not buy a goal if we wanted to on Saturday, but it was great to see our girls bounce back and open the scoring floodgates on Sunday. We have picked up a little momentum going into our next competition in a couple of weeks,” commented coaches Jorge Reynoso, Marc Medina and pedro Casas.

a tRaineR’s jouRnal Rob buRke Fall in the Central Valley is like being incarcerated in the Serengeti without an umbrella; you’re confined to an unbearable and severely dry heat that could only be worse if you were on garbage detail along the 58 freeway through Bakersfield.

As a kid of a mere 13 years growing up in the Central Valley, I didn’t realize that the entire world wasn’t trapped in a perpetual Easy-bake Oven. Nobody could do anything about the heat, so I took survival into my own hands.

Climbing over the neighbor’s fence and sneaking into their pool was the defacto cooling solution. If it was exceptionally warm, I would beg my mom to drive me to the 72-degree climactically controlled cooling center, otherwise known as our local shopping mecca. I used to love feeling the wall of cold air hitting my face in the mini Arctic Circle, known as the ice arena. Learning how to ice skate while the Earth was turning crispy seemed like a logical way to tolerate the end of humanity.

However, my teen years brought about a total lifestyle oxymoron. To this day, I still can’t explain my decision to try out for the junior high football team, in the middle of August. Let’s just throw it together with other consequentially naive decisions made at that age.

The reality of shrinkage Knocked on my back under a 260-pound pre-teen monster, I realized that my flattened body was the least of my problems since my thumb was bent backwards toward my forearm.

from helmet to Hanes. Vision was futile thanks to the sweat cascading down my forehead into my eyes. The experience was only enhanced by the sight of Coach Robinson having a self-inflicted aneurysm as he screamed plays through his rolled up play sheet. There was something alarming in the sight of “Coach Hell Raiser” barking indiscernible commands from the contorting hole in his purple face. All 11 of us wandering heat-zombies saw his lips flailing and flopping while the veins on his forehead were getting ready to explode. But we endured as his voice evolved into a muffled ringing.

“Burke! Get your bones in front of that guy and stop him!” Coach Robinson screamed while spewing saliva with every syllable. “God d*****, Burke, don’t make me light a fire under your ass; it’s hot enough. Look alive!”

I was not enjoying myself. The ice arena was like a distant mirage in my mind. And thoughts of water only made me thirstier. I ached. I was dizzy. At that moment, dehydration was probably the most humane way to die.

On cue with the quarterback’s call, “23-42-56, hut, hut, hike!” I was steamrolled by a guy twice my size. Knocked on my back under a 260-pound pre-teen monster, I realized that my flattened body was the least of my problems since my thumb was bent backwards toward my forearm. I didn’t realize how much it

hurt until extreme swelling set in during fifth-period Spanish.

Mrs. Gonzales recognized that I was in pain. “Señor Burke, como estas?”

“No bueno,” I replied. (It was first year Spanish.)

Mrs. Gonzales wrote me a pass to the school nurse who referred me to the local emergency room.

The following day, I was super cool as I arrived to first period with my arm in a blindingly white cast. Short of a tickertape parade, my classmates welcomed me like I just came home from the war.

I wouldn’t dare tell anyone that it was just a bad sprain to ensure that the hero worship would continue until at least sixth period.

Seven weeks later, the cast was removed. Even though my popularity device was no longer an influencing factor supporting my heightened social stature, it felt so good to get out of that smelly, sweat-saturated plaster splint.

But wait a minute! Why can’t I open the car door? Why can’t I hold a toothbrush? Why can’t I tie my shoes?

I became keenly aware that with the highs of popularity, the pendulum swings. Oh crap, will I be permanently disabled? Will I need to have my arm amputated and replaced with a prosthetic limb so that I could feed myself and comb my hair?

Wild thoughts ran through my under-developed cognitive wheels. For days until my check up with my doctor, I was certain that I had some kind of neurological damage from getting run over during the scrimmage in hell.

The doctor kindly put my fears to rest when he explained that this total loss of strength and the reduction in arm size was a direct result of what happens when we don’t use our muscles, and it will only persist if I don’t exercise the muscles and bring them back to their original and functional state.

Left turn: Did you know that we all

experience exponential muscle loss with each decade beyond our 20s? This progressive condition is called Sarcopenia.

Unlike when we’re at our physical peak during our 20s, if we don’t perform consistent resistance exercises beyond our 30s, we can be assured that we will experience muscle loss each and every year.

Simply put, according to U.S. Pharmacist Journal, if we do not live a lifestyle inclusive of resistance training and proper nutrition, we can be assured that if we weighed 150 pounds in our 20s, by time we reached age 75, we could potentially lose a whopping 50 pounds of muscle mass and associated strength.

And along with the loss of muscle mass and strength, we could also experience an increase in adipose or fat tissue. Average fat gain could amount to about 40 percent of your body composition.

With this reduction in lean muscle mass and an increase in fat, we can see why monitoring our body composition with a scale is a futile endeavor since we’re not seeing what’s really going on within our bodies.

Therefore, ignore the scale and instead, have your body composition checked on a regular basis.

As I refer to my days as a junior high linebacker, I’m astonished by what I could do to my body and still come out alive. Compare that to how my body responds today to far fewer degrees of hell, enduring the heat pales in comparison to the effect of losing muscle mass and the loss of balance, mobility and longevity.

Studies have shown that especially in our senior years, the more muscle mass we can conserve the better our general health and quality of life will be.

The good news is that we can slow if not turn around the demise of our muscle mass.

The moral of this story: we don’t need sunblock or a sprained hand to justify why we must stay active and safeguard our bodies from the carbon decomposition we call aging. The key is daily resistance training into our senior years.

Since the Morning Rotary Club of Carpinteria printed its first Carpinteria Calendar in 2005, the service club has raised and distributed over $106,000 through the annual fundraiser benefiting local programs and organizations. This year, the club sold over 3,500 calendars and raised funds to benefit 10 local nonprofits. Our great escapes

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham August 25, 2016 marks the centennial of the National Park Service. I haven’t been to that many national parks. I think my number is around a very modest 10.

I tend to return to the ones close to home because I want to get the most I can out of them. I realize if I attempted to visit every national park in America, I would be one frustrated dude. There’s just too much to do, to see, to photograph.

No big surprise here. The Channel Islands National Park is my favorite.

Around 80 percent of visitors who take the Island Packers ferry to the volcanic isles beach it at Scorpion Anchorage on the southeast of Santa Cruz Island. It’s the easiest access, the easiest walk to the campground in Scorpion Canyon.

What I enjoy about it more than anything is the ability to vanish out there.

Self-contained in my kayak I can access all the nooks and crannies you can’t reach on foot or by boat. It’s “Old California” at its utmost. Days can go by without speaking to anyone. Fortunately there are lots of places like that. A lot of national parks possess that solitude.

There’s something about getting to those “secret places.” Putting in the effort to enjoy the solitude of a nameless cove is a constant reward. Northwest winds in my face, waves washing over the bow, cold, wet, hungry and plenty of stiffness, but I don’t dwell on it while I’m pulling for that deserted cobbled beach.

I can literally leave my house, run down to the beach, gear up my kayak for another channel crossing and circumnavigate an island of my choice. Fortunately we live very close to a national park. We don’t have to travel at all to get to one; it’s just the Santa Barbara Channel separating the madness of the mainland and a chain of islands still mysterious after all these years.

Things have mostly gone swimmingly out there even when I’ve been swamped by windblown waves in the Potato Patch off the west end of Santa Cruz. I really can’t recall how many times I’ve come unglued from my kayak and had to swim after my kayak and gear. I do remember being catapulted out of my kayak close to 10 times during one crossing, leaving Arlington Canyon on Santa Rosa Island,

Santa Rosa’s Becher’s Bay offers remoteness remarkable for its proximity to Southern California’s hustle and bustle. surfing whitecaps off Carrington and Coati points and then picking my way off the west end of Santa Cruz, but never truly relaxing until I reached Cueva Valdez Anchorage.

That was a long haul, and I’ll never forget that trip. You don’t forget kayaking solo in 45 mile-per-hour winds with gusts to 60. It’s amazing being in those conditions and figuring it out as you go, especially when there’s no place to land.

There’s no easy out with towering cliffs and the Santa Cruz Channel offering no mercy.

There was another harrowing moment between Santa Rosa and San Miguel islands. The year was 1999, my first attempt at kayaking the islands. I’d paddled from Santa Cruz to San Miguel solo. The conditions for the most part had been stellar to that point. The weather got even better over the next three days as I ran around San Miguel. It was relaxing. It was an island fantasy.

When it came time to leave and paddle back to Santa Rosa, the northwesterly winds had picked up steam. Those winds always show up at some point on a paddling trip at the islands. There’s just no getting around it. It was wailing, but it didn’t get difficult until I was out of Cuyler Harbor and crossing the San Miguel Passage. There was a lot of current, wind waves and my paddling was uneven. I never got into a rhythm.

morning. Well, I soon realized the plan must change. The swell was up and so was the wind and I got tossed from my kayak out between the islands. It was the only time I came out of my boat on that trip.

After that I was kind of spooked and ended up paddling all the way to Bechers Bay on the southeast end of Santa Rosa.

The shoals off Santa Rosa were filled with froth as far as I could see. There was no getting to the beach.

Since then, there have been some big

days paddling one of the least visited and remote national parks. The Channel Islands National Park doesn’t get the attention like a Yosemite or Yellowstone, but that’s alright by me. No lines, no selfie freaks, just water and rock.

Carpinteria High School student Malek Mehai acclimated CVN to arid elements during a three-month sojourn to Mauritania, a country in Northwestern Africa. Mehai took a sandbath in the Sahara with CVN at the school where he was studying Arabic. He also dressed the part in traditional Mauritanian clothes.

The following counts taken from April 17-23 were compiled from Carpinteria Seal Watch volunteer reports. Carpinteria harbor seal beach closure runs from Dec. 1 to June 1 each year. Seal Watch volunteers are still welcome to sign up by calling 684-2247.

Disturbances

Pier loading noise, two jet skis, a paddle boarder and a beachwalker scared the seals.

Natural History Notes

Harbor seal pups grow rapidly on their mother’s rich milk, and after several weeks it becomes difficult to tell this year’s pups from smaller adults. No recent births have been observed, although pups are sometimes born in Carpinteria as late as May and even June. Pupping begins progressively later to the north; in British Columbia, pupping typically begins in late June or July.

The Carpinteria harbor seal rookery is located immediately east of Casitas Pier, between the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and Carpinteria State Beach. Please remember not to bring dogs, bicycles or loud voices to view the seals. Harbor seals, when disturbed, may flee and become separated from their pups.
