Linden Ave. projects to close sidewalks

The City of Carpinteria Department of Public Works has hired a contractor to repair portions of Linden Avenue between Monday, May 23 and Friday, June 10. Maintenance activities will include the replacement of two trees and 48 feet of sidewalk, curb, gutter and asphalt. During construction there will be sidewalk closures at 507 and 973 Linden Ave. Businesses in the area will remain open.

Little lake looks at large office

(Editor’s note: The writer is a resident of Lagunitas) The “live-work” development of Lagunitas on eastern Via Real saw the “live” portion completed three years ago, but the city approved work portion, an 84,000-square-foot office building, remains a barren field bordering the neighborhood of 73 homes. The Carpinteria Architectural Review Board on May 12 viewed a new pitch for what might be built on the empty office lot, the first time a design has been proposed since construction of the residential side. As such, the ARB encountered considerable resistance from neighbors who characterize the plan as more obtrusive than earlier versions.

To put the proposal into context, project architect Robin Donaldson of Shubin and Donaldson Architects Inc. said, “Tonight we want to put ideas forward and get feedback on the basic premise. We’re not ramming this down anybody’s throat.”

The most recent rendition of the Lagunitas Office Project calls for four buildings at the 8.63-acre site. Previous projects approved at the site had one office building totaling 84,000 square feet, but new developer Brad Vernon hopes to disperse the square-footage over the four-building campus to provide patios and courtyards, amenities more appealing to the current office market, he said.

“This concept seems to be a trend and to be successful for office projects that promote a healthy lifestyle and allow outdoor use,” Vernon said. In 2008 and 2013, single building concepts had been approved, and parking for the project was

In addition to creating a four-building cluster, the new concept includes a greater parking footprint distributed on all sides of the campus totaling 386 spaces, up from 340 in previous blueprints.

Rebutting the developer ’s wish to add outdoor space for office occupants, Lagunitas resident Cindy Lyon said, “We live there, so creating a comfort zone for the workers is less important to me than creating a comfort zone for the residents who are there all the time.”

Also of concern to residents was expanded parking and driveways. Lagunitas Creek serves as the dividing line between the residential and office portions of the property, and the new plans

place a driveway looping the buildings and bordering the creek.

“A lot of effort was put into restoring that creek and it’s beautiful. The impact of cars driving so close to the creek will affect (wildlife),” commented resident Verna Gindoff.

Longtime community activist and member of Carpinteria Valley Association Vera Bensen resides on Lomita Lane, which also borders the project. She recommended underground parking and lamented that trees drawn into projects to camouflage buildings are often immature when planted and don’t shield structures and parking lots for years after they’re planted. “Plant large enough plants and trees so we wouldn’t have to wait five

ARB member Scott Ellinwood said, “We’re getting kind of the impression that we’re getting a bait and switch,” concerning residents’ statements that home purchases had been made with the understanding that a prior concept had been approved for the mixed-use development.

ARB member Jim Reginato said, “I like the campus idea, but when you look at it from a distance it looks like an even bigger project than you had before.”

The conceptual hearing was an information gathering session for the applicant and garnered no official recommendation from the ARB. There’s no timetable for when an updated project could be presented to city planners.

Water issues worry farmers too

I always read with interest the column “Talking About Water” by Steve Nicolaides. I find it informative, often enlightening and thought-provoking. I was surprised that in last week’s CVN he wrote that the agriculture community says, “I own my land, and if I can afford it, I can drill a well.”

He was trying to explain why agriculture was not represented at the April 18 water meeting. I attend many meetings and this one slipped by me, and I apologize. However, I sense an anti-agriculture bias with this anonymous quote. I believe that most farmers in the valley support the idea of reclaiming and recycling water, and any other similar plan if it is shown to be safe, affordable and environmentally sound. This is not the first time that we have had such proposals presented, yet never implemented, usually because the rains came or the economics were not acceptable.

In response to the jab at agriculture in Carpinteria, I would argue that it is agriculture in the valley and its conservation of the ground water basin that have staved off the city sprawl that so many come here to escape. I believe that the ground water basin still provides a supply of water because farmers have helped preserve it. Drilling a well is an expensive and risky endeavor, and I assure you that farmers do not do it with the flippant approach indicated by the preceding quote.

Water districts and similar agencies are in the business of providing water, not conserving it. That job falls on the shoulders of the customer. In the 1990 drought, water became scarce, but once the rains returned, it was back to business as usual. If we look at our district’s history, it would indicate that if normal rainfall does not return, the ground water resource will be over-pumped by the district until it literally “dries up,” just as the other district supplies have. Is there any reason to think that these shortageinducing policies will change? Until they do, private property and water rights may be the best way to protect this resource.

Alumni football game supports future

Many of you have already heard about the upcoming War on the Shore IV. For those who haven’t, that’s the title of the May 28 Bishop Diego versus Carpinteria High School Alumni Tackle Football Game to be played at 4 p.m. at La Playa Stadium.

The reason for having this game is to use the fierce traditional rivalry between the schools to generate funds for the athletic programs of both schools. What better way to do it than to have past players get together and play in what many call one of the “best small-school rivalries in the state!”

For the record, CHS has dominated the history of the rivalry. However, Bishop Diego has gained momentum in recent years, and the Cardinals alumni football team prevailed in the last two alumni games in 1992 and 2008.

Bishop is taking this game seriously.

Cardinal alumni are anxious to mix it up and prove that the recent success of their program is no fluke. For this reason, past Warrior football players can’t be apathetic about the upcoming War on The Shore IV! The 2008 alumni game drew more than 6,000 fans in what was the biggest sporting event ever between the schools.

This fundraiser is an opportunity to have Warrior football players from different eras don their school’s colors, defend their alma mater, and help raise needed funds for the CHS Athletic Department, which will benefit all student athletes

Das will protect the 1st District

With all the Christensen lawn signs in town, I have been reluctant to publicly chime in. I have decided that this election is so important I will go ahead and stick my neck out. My daughter is a ninth generation resident of the 1st District. I worked closely with Supervisor Schwartz on some of our most important local issues, and I considered her a friend as well as an effective leader for our local environment. Her protégé Supervisor Carbajal has made her proud, following in her legacy. I am not a Democrat. I am a fiscal conservative, and I’m fine with Christensen keeping her current job. I understand she is good at it.

In my view the most important role of our 1st District Supervisor is to protect our local environment. I know I can trust Das Williams to do that. Look at the campaign contribution reports. Significant contributions to Christensen from the North County. Why? They expect her to vote with them to rape the Gaviota Coast and anywhere else they can exploit our environment for money.

At the beginning of her campaign, Christensen touted her support from Brooks Firestone, who as 3rd District Supervisor tried to sabotage at the last moment, the successful Rincon Sewer Project. Even though it had nothing to do with the 3rd District, Firestone on behalf of one very wealthy Rincon holdout, tried a last minute sabotage of the Project at LAFCO. This is what we can expect from Christensen on environmental issues.

Christensen’s TV ads show her at the beach and as pro-environment, but do you believe it? I have surfed Rincon with Das Williams and I have met his new daughter, a fellow Carpinteria resident. I know I can trust Das Williams to protect our local environment and that is how I am going to vote.

Das inaction speaks louder than words

Mark Berndt, 63 and a known pedophile for a long time, worked at Miramonte Elementary in South Los Angeles from 1979 to 2011. In 2011, Berndt blindfolded the young students in his classroom and ran 3-inch cockroaches over their faces

and spoon-fed his semen to them. This was so disgusting the families of 82 victims won over $139 million from the LA Unified School District.

Berndt pleaded no contest in 2013 to 23 counts of lewd conduct upon children and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Because the California Teachers Union is so powerful and donates so much money to legislators, it sometimes takes years to fire even horrible teachers. To get rid of Berndt, the District paid him $40,000 to go on leave, and he collects over $40,000 each year in pension benefits and lifetime health benefits while in prison.

In response, State Senator Padilla introduced SB 1530 which passed the Senate 98-0. The bill then went to the Education Committee in the House. Four members of that committee abstained from voting on the bill which amounted to a no vote killing the bill. One of those four Assembly members was Das Williams. If he’d voted “No” on the bill, it would have outraged parents. If he’d voted “Yes” on the bill, it would have outraged one of his largest contributors, the teachers union.

Knowing an abstention would kill it without having to take an actual position, he abstained. Williams received $30,000 that year from the teachers union. When interviewed by CNN on the national news, Williams said he thought it was an overreach.

I encourage you to watch Anderson Cooper on CNN to see Williams interviewed for yourself. I’ll be voting for Jennifer Christensen.

Painting Trump’s character

In last week’s Coastal View News, a letter writer claimed that Donald Trump has character (“Trump will navigate America to success,” CVN, May 12). Just to follow what character we’re talking about, I thought I’d give a quick description so we’re clear about what’s going on.

Donald Trump is a hothead, a loose cannon with no impulse control or respect for himself. A narcissist with no guilt, conscience or remorse, his comments directed at women, Muslims and Hispanics denote a vicious temperament void of compassion and understanding.

A transparent, spoiled brat, he’s the eternal victim, never responsible for anything he says, never at fault for what he doesn’t know. Woefully uninformed, he rarely answers questions directly. Instead, he attacks interviewers, changes the subject, while using infantile and baseless rants to throw off and confuse listeners.

Bereft of specifics except for his own delusions, he’s trapped in a world only he understands, where honesty and consistency are meaningless, and integrity is nonexistent.

The ultimate manipulator, this meandering, monosyllabic meatball has convinced some through repeated, simplistic claims that he is all knowing and all great.

Press him for something real, and he morphs into a silly, political bog monster where anything goes, not only confusing others, but himself as well.

What are they trying to hide?

Adelanto Detention Center houses several thousand male –and now female— people who have been picked up by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) for being in this country without proper papers. Adelanto is in the middle of the desert between Palmdale and Victorville and is owned and run by the Geo Group, a for-profit company that owns prisons all over the world.

Yesterday I went to the Adelanto Detention Center. A number of us ladies go every month or so to visit the detainees.

It’s a concrete block, rising in the midst of the desert. The waiting room is huge, bare and clean, in fact everything that the public might see is clean and orderly, but what hides behind this facade?

I waited most of the day without being able to visit anyone. The staff said the men were “in the yard” or “taking a shower,” etc. Finally around 4 p.m., we left for the long drive home. In the car on the way home, my friends who had been able to visit, told the stories they had heard from the detainees, and they were hard to listen to: cloudy, bad-tasting water to drink, almost inedible food and fights among detainees while guards gathered to watch.

These detainees are not criminals, yet they are treated worse than imprisoned felons. Many of them are fleeing oppressive and murderous threats in their home countries. They believe, as one told me, “The American people are good and merciful. They will help me.” And so, full of hope, they cross the border, and are immediately arrested and taken to Adelanto. Unless they are wealthy, they have no access to legal help. Medical help is hard to come by.

The Geo Group and other companies are making mighty profits for imprisoning these detainees, and that money comes from our tax dollars. In spite of what they say, visitors are discouraged.

They don’t want the public to hear or see what is really going on. What are they trying to hide?

Working at play it takes a village MARIA FISK, PhD Director of the Carpinteria Children’s Project The foundation of a child’s development of healthy social and emotional skills is healthy relationships with his or her caregivers. A very important way to strengthen your relationship with the child in your life is through play. Below, reprinted with slight modifications, is an excerpt from “Make the Most of Playtime,” an article for parents written by folks from the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations of Early Learning. Playing with your child in the first three years of life helps the two of you build a warm and loving relationship.

Playing together also supports the development of essential social skills (like sharing and turn taking), language skills (like labeling objects, making requests, commenting) and thinking skills (like problem-solving). For babies and young children, play is their “work.” It is through play and repetition that they try out and master new skills, explore their imagination and creativity, learn to communicate and learn about relationships with other people.

Any activity can be playful to young children, whether it’s a game of peek-aboo or helping you wipe the table with a sponge. As a parent, you are your child’s very first and favorite playmate. From the very beginning of his/her life, he/she is playing with you, whether watching your face at mealtime or listening to your voice as you sing during a diaper change.

Making time to play with your child each day is not always easy. However, setting aside even 15 minutes every day to play together goes a long way in building a loving relationship between you and your child. Making time for play, especially active play, can also help in reducing your child’s challenging behavior. So what can you do to make the most of your child’s playtime? Check out the tips below.

Follow Your Child’s Lead. Provide an object, toy or activity for your baby or toddler and then see what he/she does with it. When your child plays, it’s okay if it’s not the “right” way—let him/her show you a “new way.” For example, when you hand your child a plastic cup, instead of pretending to drink from it, he/she might put it on his/her head as a party hat. Support your child’s creativity and join in the birthday play.

Go Slowly. It’s great to show your child how a toy works, but hold off on “doing it for him/her” every time. You

can begin something, such as stacking one block on another, and then encourage your child to give it a try. Providing just enough help to keep frustration at bay motivates your child to learn new skills.

Read Your Child’s Signals. Your little one might not be able to tell you with words when he/she’s had enough or when he/she’s frustrated. But your child has other ways— like using sounds, facial expressions and gestures. Reading these signals can also tell you what activities your child prefers. Reading the signals that come before a tantrum help you know when to jump in or change to a new activity.

Look at Your Play Space. Is the area where you will play child-friendly? Is there too much noise or other distraction?

Is this a good place for the activity you’ve chosen, such as running, throwing balls, or painting? Checking out your space beforehand can prevent a tantrum, an accident or a broken lamp.

Play It Again. While doing things over and over again is not necessarily thrilling for Mom and Dad, it is for young children. They are practicing in order to master a challenge. And when your child can do it “all by myself!” he/she is rewarded with a powerful sense of her own skills and abilities—the confidence that he/she is a smart and successful being. The more children have a chance to practice and master new skills, the more likely they are to take on new challenges and learn new things.

Jean Ann Loveridge 3/18/1926 - 4/13/2016

On April 13, 2016, Jean Ann Loveridge (also known as “Granny” in her later years) passed away at her home in Carpinteria, Calif., after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Jean was born in Grand Forks, N.D., on March 18, 1926, to Stanley R. Dunlop and Gladys E. Dunlop (neé Britton).

Jean met her future husband, Robert R. Loveridge (Bob) at an early age in Grand Forks, and upon Bob’s return from service in World War II, they were married at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Bob remained in the Air Force, and for the next 22 years, Jean was to become very adept at moving from base to base as is required in the service life.

A son, Larry L. Loveridge, was born on Feb. 1, 1947 at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., and on Feb. 5, 1950, a daughter, Susan G. Loveridge, was born at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss.

In 1957, the family traveled by ship to Japan where they were met at Yokohama Harbor by Bob and the family dog, Yuki (English translation “snow”). A year followed of traveling and becoming enmeshed in the Japanese culture and lifestyle. The entire family loved the experience of living in Japan, and Jean, in

Nancy Cravens Rubio passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, where she had worked for more than 42 years. Nancy was born Feb. 17, 1937 in Santa Barbara, Calif. the daughter of Carpinteria’s very own Marcus and Rowena Cravens. She was united in marriage to Edward Rubio on Oct. 12, 1956 in Fort Lee, Va. They were married for 59 amazing years.

Nancy worked for Cottage Hospital as a Registered Nurse, before moving into administration and ultimately becoming the VP of Nursing. She dedicated more than 40 years to improving health care for the people in our community and is credited for helping to establish the nursing program at Santa Barbara City College.

Nancy was a 1954 graduate of Carpinteria High School and a loyal parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

A retirement home was built for Jean and the family in the countryside of Loomis. Many happy hours were spent with friends and family at this location, although this was not to be the last place Jean would live. Eventually, the couple moved to Carpinteria where they both spent their final years.

Jean is predeceased by her husband, Bob; her brother, Robert Dunlop; her sister-in-law, Betty Dunlop; and her nephew, Kalib Babcock. Survivors include her son, Larry Loveridge (Noelani) of Seaside, Ore.; daughter Susan Loveridge, of Carpinteria, Calif.; sister Dorothy Babcock of Boulder, Colo.; nephew Kevin Babcock (Holly) of Boulder, Colo.; nephew Keenan Babcock of Boulder, Colo.; nephew Michael Babcock (Traci) of Bozeman, Montana.; nephew Benjamin Babcock and niece Clair Babcock of Bozeman, Mont.; niece Cathy Lemonnier (Gerald) of Agoura, Calif.; and nephew Nicolas Lemonnier and niece Natalie Lemonnier of Agoura, Calif.

Surviving grandchildren include: Jada McBride Pitones (Jorge) of Oxnard, Calif.; Tyler McBride (Rebecca) of Carpinteria, Calif.; Shawn McBride of Ventura, Calif., Zachary Loveridge (Jolyn) of Temecula, Calif.; Darby Loveridge (Amber) of Seaside, Ore.; and several great-grandchildren including Angelina, Monique, Angel, Aliana, Kelden, Brennen, Liam, Delaney, Robbie and “the boss” Sebellin.

We wish to give special thanks to Jean’s caregivers, Alma Araiza-Patino, Sue Gloris, and Visiting Nurses and Hospice of Santa Barbara, particularly Christine, Ava and Brenda, who provided consistent, loving and gentle care. Please send any donations in Jean’s memory to a charity of your choice.

She enjoyed hosting hundreds of events at the “Ranch” (Rancho Rubio/Cravens Ranch), where “Gran” always made sure there was plenty of food and fun.

Nothing made her happier than watching her kids and grandkids participate, whether it be football, basketball, soccer, dance or cheerleading. She may have been sitting in a chair and reading her book, but you always knew she was there to support the kids. She was a diehard Warrior fan who could be found alongside her husband Eddie at every CHS football game regardless of location or weather. But it didn’t end on Friday nights, as she spent almost 40 years attending both home and away games for her beloved USC Trojans. We can take comfort knowing that Gran is still watching us through her binoculars, keeping a close eye on all we do—like she did all her life.

Nancy … Mom … Gran … we thank you for all the love you gave to us and ask that you sit back, relax and enjoy all the books that Heaven’s Library has to offer.

Your love for family and all that Carpinteria has to offer will be greatly missed, but you will forever remain in our hearts.

But since there are so few numeric standards and so many unknown but potentially damaging pollutants/contaminants, what goes in is mainly an unknown. If a mistake is made, the basin may be irreversibly contaminated, then what?

The warning of a USEPA toxicologist discussing the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) is important: “Bottom line on almost all of the ‘emerging’ contaminants that have attracted attention: It will be a long time, if ever, before they are regulated under the SDWA.” The overall topic under discussion was “non-action” by governmental regulatory and legislative bodies and potential consequent impacts on public health. We cannot afford this because we are running out of viable options and we don’t want to be another Flint.

The idea that an underground aquifer does not have ownership boundaries and that, “One thirsty well can drain the water table of many other properties,” as CVN columnist Steve Nicolaides stated last week, is not a hard and fast rule. There are answers. The new state law, the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, empowers locals to build groundwater management plans tailored directly to community needs. Community management is available, especially if the community understands what is at stake. An open forum is needed. One way is via this paper.

Suggesting using treated wastewater to recharge the aquifer sounds simple.

What does it offer us? That source water (wastewater) is now discharged through a short shallow outfall into the community’s near shore waters. Redirecting that water onto the land or into the aquifer has appeal for two reasons. First, we stop the potential contamination of our precious beaches with the contained multi-antibiotic resistant pathogens, and secondly, we save a million gallons a day. But, and this is a big but, we do not want those same pollutants going into our drinking water aquifer. So, the presumably simple answer—just clean it up first. The Mississippi River was mentioned. Good, idea?

Well, depends. Is the water really clean and safe or is it just “legal”?

What’s this clean versus legal stuff?

Ask the citizens of Flint. An idea of legal versus safe is found in the California Supreme Court decision on Hartwell, the brief of which should be a required read.

An encapsulation is found at thefederation.org.

Hartwell holds pollutants found in water but without underlying numeric standards, even if they made you ill, are not the responsibility of the water agency.

This is a serious flaw in the law. There is a general reluctance on the part of the water industry to do adequate testing and there is a reluctance to come up with adequate standards. Thus, the citizen, in reality, has few, if any, rights or standing in court (see Hartwell).

Then to really clean up the water, not just make it “legal,” requires considerable effort and that effort drives up the cost

Butterflies Alive!

It’s butterfly time again at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. The Butterflies Alive! exhibit opens Saturday, May 21 when visitors can surround themselves with live butterflies in the museum’s creek-side garden of flowers and greenery. “Butterflies Alive! is an ideal venue for introducing the public to the strange, often hidden, and virtually endless world of insect diversity.

At the stroke of one a collection of stroke stories

Editor’s note: Gail Stribling, a longtime Carpinterian and local volunteer, passed away April 25, 2016. She suffered her first stroke over 22 years ago when she was in her early 40s, but through her strong will and positive attitude, she regained her ability to live life fully. In her words, “I tried depressed, but it wasn’t much fun.”

Gail didn’t focus on what she couldn’t do, choosing instead to “make lemonade.” Her view of life after a stroke is at the heart of the following article.

“The new garage door moves slower than the old one,” I complained to my husband.

“No, it’s not slower,” he said. “It just moves differently so it takes longer.”

Sounds just like me.

I had my stroke in July and spent two weeks in the hospital followed by a four-week stay at rehab. I returned to work at our orchid nursery, part time, in September and attended a trade show in San Diego with my husband in October, to show my colleagues I was back to normal. By January I worked full time.

Somehow I managed to live through the first year, but by fall I knew it was time to slow down and retire.

I tried being depressed, but it wasn’t much fun. Instead, I focused on what I could do and found new activities.

Reading was first, followed by volunteer library duty, writing class, another volunteer job as dispatcher for Help, Newsletter Editor for California Women for Agriculture, and last, but not least, my duties as Cookie Princess.

In the past, I white-water rafted on the Snake River twice, hiked and climbed mountain trails. I now struggle to stay upright as I scuffle along sidewalks, and stairs are a challenge I try to avoid. Preconceptions of my limitations were altered while on vacation in Costa Rica.

My first challenge was La Mariposa in Quepos, a beautiful hotel with panoramic views built on the side of a hill with a series of stairs, many without handrails. It was a workout every time I wanted to eat, drink or swim. One day I chose the two-hour tour in the butterfly preserve while the others opted for the canopy trip, which involved soaring down cables in the rainforest.

The soaring part I can handle, but the climb, up trees, between platforms, seemed beyond me.

In Manuel Antonio National Park, I managed to complete a hike through the rainforest, walked along the beach and crossed a river. I especially enjoyed the part where the monkeys threw green gourd-like things at other hikers. Fresh from my conquest of the rainforest, I decided to try a full-day tour to the mountains. At breakfast, one of the guides asked if I were up to a 45-minute walk to the waterfalls. I assured him all

What he neglected to mention was the walk was all up and down steep stairways. By the time we reached a waterfall I’d look briefly, mumble, “Beautiful,” and attack the next section of stairs.

My next adventure was a two-hour, class 3, river raft trip. Our raft guide questioned my capability and warned she couldn’t guarantee I’d stay in the raft. I assured her I had no intention of leaving the raft, but also informed her I could swim and wasn’t afraid of water.

Only after we donned helmets and life jackets, climbed over a big pile of rocks, positioned ourselves in the raft and listened to the safety instructions, did I start to question my decision. It was decided I would not paddle; my sole job was to stay in the raft.

The water level was low and although the rapids were scary, the biggest danger came from getting stuck on the rocks. I had no problem with the “get down” command, I really liked the bottom of the raft, but the “up” was more difficult. At the end of the trip, I thanked everyone for the nice ride. Taking my job seriously, I never left the raft, even to swim. The only damages were multiple bruises and two broken nails.

I think maybe next time I’ll try the canopy trip, but in the meantime I’ll study Spanish. I want to learn the word for stroke so I can better explain why I walk too far to the right, why I forget things, why I don’t drive, why stairs sometimes are just “too much.” Some people might look at these as disabilities; I just think of them as differences.

Carpinteria’s water glass remains half full SubmiTTEd by CVWd STaff

As feared by many water managers along the Central Coast, El Niño did not deliver an end to the current drought. Lake Cachuma remains at a historic low volume of storage, less than 15 percent of total capacity with the Cachuma Project issuing a zero allocation for the first time ever.

With 45 percent of the normal rainfall for the last five years at Lake Cachuma there is virtually no water remaining in the lake for water supply. Deliveries from the lake to the South Coast after this summer are expected to be primarily water delivered into the lake by the State Water Project.

The good news is that along with great water conservation from district customers, infrastructure investments made by the district over the last several years are paying off. They include improvements to the pump and electrical equipment at Headquarters Well, a newly drilled El Carro Well, a new central zone mainline connecting the wells to the new Foothill Storage Tank, and a rehabilitated Smillie well. They are, along with increased State Water deliveries coming into the lake from Northern California and participation in a groundwater banking program, preventing the district from having to declare a water shortage and require allocations or rationing.

To address the possibility of continued drought through next winter, the district is making additional use of its State Water Project facilities investment to acquire 1,000 AF of supplemental water in an uneven exchange with the Antelope Valley East Kern Water Agency. Continued use of groundwater and exceptional conservation by district customers, along with this imported State Water, is projected to prevent district shortages or rationing through 2017.

Looking beyond the drought, the district in a cooperative venture with the City of Carpinteria, the Carpinteria Sanitary District and the State Water Board

recently completed a Recycled Water Facilities Plan. The plan identified the reuse of up to 1,100 AF of highly treated water.

This water would be treated to advanced levels and injected into the groundwater basin for use by the district as a new water supply. The water from a project like this is considered a drought-proof water supply because it does not depend on rainfall.

Of course much of what the district is doing to address this epic drought is costly and must be reflected in the proposed 2016-17 fiscal year budget and water rates. Along with exceptional conservation, the rate increases are ensuring uninterrupted water service.

There will be a new manager at the district soon! The Board of Directors has appointed Bob McDonald the district engineer of 17 years to succeed General Manager Charles Hamilton who is retiring on July 1 of this year.

Trekking around CVN

THE SUMMERLAND SHORE F R A N D AV I S I’ve been AWOL lately. But maybe there’s no such thing as being absent without leave when you’re essentially retired. Maybe retirement means a kind of permanent leave, although it doesn’t feel that way. The daily obligations of home, yard, dog and self maintenance don’t feel anything like “leave.” They feel like work shifted elsewhere.

Leaving home is true leave. We’ve been doing that—for the sake of variety and also to remind the Road Trek to stay alert and remember its purpose. Which is to take us to camping spots and then shelter us. We drove the vehicle we call Trekkie, or sometimes Big Burt, on a jaunt up to Pinnacles, which is now a national park.

The thing about the Road Trek is that it drives like the truck that it is, of a certain age, with its own twitches and rattles.

In the high seat behind the wheel, I feel like a semi driver, on an even keel with the long haulers. Plus I can see a lot of stuff along the road that’s invisible from a standard car.

We take the dogs on our camping adventures. Gracie the Jack Russell, who has braved the multiple dangers of skunk traps and compost bin imprisonment, is a calm and seasoned traveler. But Finney, the 1-year-old chiweenie, comes unglued.

He climbs my torso and tries to wedge himself between my back and the seat— while I’m driving. He ends up draped around the back of my neck like a scarf.

under my feet, which makes braking a challenge and creates unexpected weaving as Roger attempts to haul him out.

Pinnacles is pretty far off the beaten path in the Gabilan Mountains east of the Salinas Valley. We took the longer route from San Ardo, winding through valleys between low hills, cattle in the fading green grass, poppies, isolated farm houses. Old California. No traffic.

You could count other cars on one hand.

Mainly due to isolation (and heat), Pinnacles feels like a lost-in-time kind of place. Quiet, no cell phone service. A tiny general store, no one at the visitor center to check us in, just a spot under a big valley oak in the campground with your name posted on it. Lots of rabbits and ground squirrels—Disneyland for terrier Gracie. We tied her to a table leg with a long tether that she stretched to the edge of a ground squirrel minefield, which she monitored endlessly. For an excitable dog, she has remarkable focus. At one point, out walking, she discovered a really big hole and climbed all the way in. I had to reel her out, like landing a fish.

The outstanding feature of Pinnacles, of course, are the pinnacles. Huge rock monoliths, spires and crags thrust up from narrow canyons, making for great mountain climbing. I encountered more than one adventurer carrying loops of orange climbing line and wished him luck. Most were headed to the high peaks, where condors swing in the evening updrafts. I was disappointed to miss those big birds, but the trail was long and steep and hot, and we had the dogs, a big damper on such occasions. Or, as my husband maintains, a good excuse.

We did visit a talus cave, one watching the hounds while the other climbed through the cave, made when boulders fell into a narrow creek bed. It’s lit by occasional light beams shining through cracks. You still need a flashlight to see your way up steps carved into rock and balance on stones in the shallow streambed. Heat was building outside, even in April, and the cave was lovely and cool.

As an antidote to the Pinnacles adventure we spent a civilized week in San Francisco. They aren’t allowing dogs in museums yet, so we left the mutts at home with our friend Susan. While we were enjoying a Bonnard exhibition in the city, Gracie the terrier continued to find and consume anything she could get her jaws around. She ate an entire bottle of Spirulina left on a table by Susan. (The dog has a stomach of steel). Later we found Gracie prying at the cap of a bottle of Vitamin B-12, which she must have had squirreled away somewhere. A truly omnivorous pooch.

Summerland School’s annual allschool production this year is “The Wiz-

ard of Oz.” Every kid in school from the tiny to the tall takes part in this over-thetop joyful production. Parent Marit ter Mate-Martinsen reports you can hear kids at work rehearsing songs and lines from anywhere in the vicinity of the school.

Laezer Schlomkovitz of the Children’s Creative Project is again directing this year’s musical.

The Wizard will be staged Friday, June 3 at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, the 4th at 1 p.m. at Carpinteria’s Children’s Project at Main. Tickets, $15 per adult, $5 for kids, can be purchased at the door or by calling the school. Seeing these kids in action is always a sure fire cure for foggy doldrums!

One good thing: Spring trio—moist marine layer, mockingbirds singing at night, purple jacarandas.

Carpinteria High School teacher Erin Hanson introduces a student panel at a CHS-hosted seminar on Get Focused, Stay Focused, a high school program designed to steer students into college, careers and beyond.

CHS focuses on future

Carpinteria High School has a reputation for its ability to prepare students for the future. The school’s eight-year-old get Focused, Stay Focused program serves as a model for other programs around the state during regular conferences hosted at CHS, much like one on May 20. Teachers from Bakersfield, San Francisco and Sacramento, among other places, convened at CHS to learn from the successes of the local program that teaches students to think a decade into the future.

Offered as a freshman seminar at CHS, get Focused, Stay Focused jolts the new high schoolers into planning career paths, preparing for college and budgeting finances, all while devising an evolving 10-year plan to guide them through the giant transition into adulthood. A bonus for students is that Santa Barbara City College treats the seminar as a dual enrollment course, meaning CHS freshmen get college credit. After freshmen year, the get Focused, Stay Focused content is updated and refreshed in grade-specific modules.

“It’s comprehensive college and career guidance. Students learn about who they

are and who they want to be,” commented CHS teacher Erin Hansen, who along with teacher Amy Bryant, runs the seminars and local get Focused, Stay Focused program. CHS piloted the program that is now taught in 152 schools nation wide.

Bryant said that the freshmen get a wake-up call when having a serious conversation about what the future holds. “They all want to be professional athletes, You Tubers, celebrities. I crush their dreams,” Bryant said, adding that if one of the students makes it in one of the pipe dream careers, “I tell them, ‘You are welcome to wear a T-shirt on TV that says ‘I told you so.’’”

A student panel presented at the seminar and couldn’t have been more enthusiastic about get Focused, Stay Focused.

They commented on the eye-opening nature of the curriculum. “You get to see how life will be in years to come. How much money you’ll need and the reality,” said a student. unanimously, the students were self-aware, confident and practical about the future.

Students were asked to give hypothetical advice to the teachers visiting for the seminar. One said, “(get Focused, Stay Focused) is not just a requirement to graduate. It’s (students’) lives. Scare them!”

Over 100 athletes competed in the events including the javelin, discus, boxing, wrestling, shot put, arm wrestling, short and long jumps and the marathon. Victors were crowned with laurel wreaths, granted a lifetime free of taxes and the opportunity to lead the community into a scrumptious greek feast.

Carpinteria artist Jimmy Bell is having an art reception at Underground Hair Salon, 1021 Chapala Street, on Monday, May 23 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. At the reception, Bell will release prints of his work entitled “Tigersnake,” of which he will sign and number 25 for sale at the event. The show will be on display through the end of May.

Plaza Theater to host drama camp

Over summer vacation, students can take reprieve from creating drama at home by attending Drama Camp at Plaza Playhouse Theater. The camp for grade levels 3 to 12 will be held Monday through Friday, July 5 to 15, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the theater, 4916 Carpinteria Ave. The course will culminate in a performance of “Pirates of the Mary Anne,” a musical melodrama involving, ghosts, pirates and a villain all on the deck of the Mary Anne. Students not interested in acting can participate in other roles like sound and light or costume designer. The cost per person is $230 for the two-week session. The Carpinteria High School track and field team qualified four individuals from the CIF Division IV Prelims, held at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium last week, to the CIF Finals to be held at Cerritos College this Saturday, May 21. Chance Wright was the fifth place qualifier in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.60. Brian Buchmiller and Jimmy Graves were among the nine qualifiers in the pole vault with 12-foot clearances. Annalisa DeAlba was the fifth qualifier in the discus with a toss of 111 feet, eight inches. Gaby Fantone will be the first alternate in the 300-meter hurdles after finishing 10th with a time of 48.77.

Gocong inducted in SBART Hall of Fame

Chris Gocong was inducted in the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame for his rise from Carpinteria High School football to the NFL.

Carpinteria High School alumnus and former NFL player Chris Gocong was inducted into the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame in a ceremony held April 16 at the La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara. San Marcos tennis star Kelly Schmandt, UCSB volleyball standout Gary Pearce, Dos Pueblos pitching ace Scott Randall, Santa Barbara soccer star Meghan Moore Reardon and longtime Santa Barbara baseball coach Fred Warrecker were a part of the class honored during the organization’s 49th induction.

Gocong was a force as a defensive player at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he was named All-American and received the Buck Buchanan award as the nation’s best Division I-AA defensive player. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the Chris Gocong lined up at linebacker for the third round in 2006 to play Philadelphia Eagles. linebacker, and spent seven years in the league, which included a stint at Cleveland. The high school track and football star retired in 2012 after suffering a torn Achilles tendon.

When called upon to the podium to accept the honor, Gocong opted not to use a prepared speech, but entertained the packed room with a story about his first year playing in the NFL. “It was the most scary thing I’ve ever done in my whole life,” said Gocong describing his first NFL play. “Imagine, I’m at Lambeau Field and its mid day, and Brett Favre is six-feet away from me,” described the former CIF AllState football player. “And I’m looking at him trying to look mean, and he’s looking at me because he knows that I’m a rookie, and he kind of gives me a little wink; and I’m thinking what am I doing here.”

Gocong also credited his coaches, his wife, family and supporters and hard work for getting him to the NFL. “It’s work ethic that builds confidence, and confidence combined with that work ethic can take you places.”

Warriors win finale, prep for baseball playoffs CHS 8, Malibu 5

BY ALONZO OROZCO The Carpinteria High School baseball team ended the regular season in fine fashion with an 8-5 come-from-behind victory on Senior Day, defeating Malibu at home in front of a spirited crowd at John Calderwood Field on May 12. The Warriors (16-5 overall, 9-3 in the Tri-Valley League) qualified for playoffs and will have played after press time.

Carpinteria got off to a rough start, giving up five runs to the Sharks in the top of the first inning. “The first inning, luckily, was sort of an aberration; it’s nothing we’ve seen from our pitchers or our fielders,” said Warrior coach Pat Cooney, whose team surrendered the five runs on three hits, three walks and an error in the top half.

Carpinteria wasted little time in the bottom half of the inning to begin its comeback.

Aided by four walks issued by Malibu pitcher William Tamkin, the home team scored four times to pull within one. The big blast came off the bat of David Martinez whose towering three-run homer to right field put his team within striking distance.

“It could have been disastrous after that first inning having to peck away at it one at a time, to get three in one swing, that was humongous,” explained the coach, analyzing one of the key moments in the game.

Carpinteria caught the Sharks in the second when Sal Delgado doubled home Malcolm Gordon from first. The Warriors delivered another big inning in the fourth, scoring three runs, to overtake Malibu. With two outs, Delgado tripled down the right field line.

Delgado ended up four-for-four on the day with a single, two doubles, a triple, two RBI and two runs in the game.

The Warriors used four pitchers for the game: Diego Contreras, Robert Warren, Chase Mayer and David Martinez, shutting down the Sharks the rest of the way after a turbulent first inning. Senior lefty Robert Warren picked up the win, pitching three innings, improving his record to 2-1 on the year. Coming into the game with a spot in the CIF playoffs secured, Cooney opened up the roster, using a variety of players for the game.

“We came in with the idea to recognize some seniors. They’ve done a lot of work, some for four years,” said Cooney.

After a successful regular season, Carpinteria seems to be ready for the post season.

“We’ve played well. We’ve had all different kinds of games, games where we scored a lot or scored few, and used all different ways to win,” explained Cooney.

May 10 - The Carpinteria High School baseball team shut out Malibu 4-0 in eight innings at Malibu. Warrior pitcher Sal Delgado and Malibu hurler Dylan Ross each held their opponents scoreless through seven innings. Carpinteria scored on Ross in the eighth as Jonah Spach knocked in two with a bases loaded, one out double which was followed by a two-run double off the bat of Delgado. The Tri-Valley League (TVL) win was the eighth against just three losses and it secured at least a third-place finish for the Warriors whose overall record improved to 15-6. “Eight TVL wins marks a modern day high for us, and each one of the wins was hard earned,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney.

May 12 - The Carpinteria High School boys swimming team competed in CIF with Ryan Fly dropping a second in his 500 from 5:22 to 5:21. Fly finished the boys 200 freestyle relay with Jordan Perez, Sal Briceno and Ryan Fly; and Forrest Van Stein finished 30th in the 200 free and 22nd in the 500 free, almost making it to the finals.

The boys 200 freestyle relay finished 28th, and the 400 freestyle relay finished 25th with Briceno finishing 36th.

May 10 – The Cate School boys volleyball team’s season came to an end, as they were swept by Warren of Downey in the first round of the Division III CIF playoffs.

With the Rams serving the first ball, senior Morgan Pierce shut down the Bears’ southpaw hitter with a block on the left side. Cate’s junior libero Nathan Martin dug and passed up the Bears attack throughout the contest, commented coach Greg Novak. The Rams finished the season with a 12-2 Frontier League record and 13-5 overall mark.

May 10 - The Cate School baseball team dropped a Frontier League contest to Foothill Tech 6-2. The Rams got the scoring started when senior Dean Smith tripled to lead the game off. He was brought home by junior Dylan Ell later that inning.

The Rams got a big performance on the mound from freshman Ethan Cassulo. “The freshman got his first career start and did well. The righty went five, scattered six hits, and struck out four,” said Cate assistant Dave Soto.

May 12 - The Cate School baseball team closed out the regular season, beating Foothill Tech 7-2 in a Frontier League contest on campus. Senior Joel Revo had two doubles and an RBI for the Rams. Freshman Jack Deardorff and senior Duffy Montgomery also had two hits for Cate, with Deardorff tallying a double and two RBI. “Freshman McCarthy Willett was solid at second base when called upon,” said Cate assistant Dave Soto. The Rams finished tied for third in the Frontier League.

May 12 – The Cate School boys tennis team season ended in a 10-8 loss to West Torrance, winner of the Pioneer league. The Rams’ Kevin Ha (junior) and Nicholas Hildebrandt (sophomore) led the team with two wins each in singles. The rest of the team contributed with one set each. Individual play continues for Ha and the doubles team of Hildebrandt/Herman, winners of the Tri-Valley League Tournament.

My main problem with this rendition of “The Jungle Book” is that it is not sufficiently reimagined. There is no new angle or spin—not even a fresh thematic or narrative emphasis. Look, I like “The Jungle Book” story. Who doesn’t? But this movie just feels like a CG version of the old one. Or, even worse, it feels like a somewhat clumsy CG copycat of the old one (with a lamer, lazier ending). I guess I had hoped that someone with a fresh take on the story would breathe new life into it.

You might respond, “So what if it is nothing new. A good story is a good story.” Maybe, but it’s kind of like when there is this really great story that your grandpa used to tell, but that your Uncle Bill starts telling because he thinks he can, and he tells it in this weird booming voice as if he is adding his own little twist. It may still be a great story, but no one wants to hear good ol’ Bill tell it.

“But the CG is amazing! And the cinematography is great!” you might say. Yeah, all right, but it is still CG. And maybe it’s just me, but I have an upper bound on how awe-stricken I can get

by CG. You might retort, “But, c’mon, Bill Murray as Baloo and Christopher Walken as King Louie—you can’t beat that!”

Well, fine, you got me there. Murray and Walken can’t be beat. They do a great job. They add serious warmth and personability to this movie.

But is that enough? Not this time.

“The Jungle Book” is rated PG for some sequences of scary action and peril.

Stories like “The Jungle Book” are precious—they are treasures. For so many of us, they are iconic, nostalgic, formative and not to be messed with.

One thing that is kind of cool about “The Jungle Book” in particular—the story, that is (I assume we are all familiar)—is this series of tests or temptations that the little man cub, Mowgli (Neel Sethi), faces.

Each peril is a little bit different, packs its own punch and has its own moral.

There is of course the peril of Shere Khan (Idris Elba) throughout. This awful tiger wants to kill Mowgli just because Mowgli is a man cub. It’s a rush to judgment, sure, but he is after all a tiger. Plus, someone has to be the big baddie.

But then, as Mowgli flees his home to get away from Shere Khan, he faces a series of less obvious, less straightforward trials. The snake, Kaa (Scarlett Johansson), attempts to woo Mowgli into a false sense of security—she tempts him with comfort.

Baloo (Bill Murray) also offers comfort to Mowgli, but in a different way. Whereas Kaa tests Mowgli’s ability to sense danger or discern who can be trusted, Baloo (who can be trusted) presents Mowgli with the allure of laziness—a complacent sort of comfort. It’s the pleasure of just staying put and taking it easy through life.

King Louie (Christopher Walken) offers Mowgli power. Louie—a mix between Donald Trump and a mob boss in this one (well, maybe that’s all the same)—wants fire, and promises to share his dominion with Mowgli if he helps.

(But, of course, we all know the power hungry aren’t good at sharing.)

In each of these cases, there is something good (or seemingly good): Comfort, ease, power. It’s nice to be reassured when we are scared (though not squeezed to death a la Kaa). It’s great to lay back and take it easy with friends. And who doesn’t like a little say-so here and there? Still, these are temptations. If Mowgli holds them too close, or becomes too wrapped up in them, he will perish.

Perhaps his biggest temptation is to stay put—to not move on when he ought to. He faces this temptation when Bagheera (Ben Kingsley) urges him to leave his wolf pack and go to the man village. And, according to the standard version of the story, he faces it at the end, too. Mowgli has to move on. Staying put is not an option in life.

A motel manager on Carpinteria Avenue reported that a guest had flown over the cuckoo’s nest and needed to be evicted on May 5 at 4:25 p.m. The guest was reportedly screaming and disturbing others and had been warned. When deputies arrived, they joined the manager who was walking to the room carrying bolt cutters. The manager unlocked the door using a key card and cut the chain lock with the bolt cutters.

Once the manager and officers entered the room, the guest, a 30-year-old man, stood up from his bed, began swinging his arms and yelling about the impending apocalypse. A deputy ordered the man to be seated, and he complied but claimed to have no identification. A visual sweep of the room revealed the man kept his ID next to his meth. There was also meth crushed into lines on the table near the ID. The man continued to rant about the end of the world and managed to slip in some personalized messages to a deputy.

He said he recalled when he was in high school and had been acquainted with the deputy. The officer had taught the man to be a master sword fighter, he reminisced.

Officers arrested the man for possession of drugs.

Deputies investigated a report of a transient female, 52, helping herself to grocery store products on Casitas Pass Road. The store manager said the woman had been grazing before opting to shampoo her hair in the store. Officers ap-

proached her in the frozen foods section and saw that a mesh pocket on her pink backpack contained a meth pipe. She was arrested for the pipe and an outstanding warrant.

Golf cart hijinx

A man who’d driven his electric golf cart to a Linden Avenue church thrift store reported that his cell phone was swiped from the cup holder during his shopping experience. He left the phone unattended for about 10 minutes at around 1:30 p.m. on May 7 and it wandered off. Using the “Find my Phone” app, the man was able to track the phone to an apartment complex, but the app wasn’t precise enough for officers to start knocking at doors. The man was advised to cancel his account on the $200 phone to avoid accruing further charges.

What are public school teachers worth?

A MONTHLY MUSE MELINDA WITTWER If you ask someone in public education why she became a teacher, one person might say, “I want to change lives,” or, “I enjoy working with children,” or “I want to have vacations off with my family.” I can guarantee the answer would not be, “I want to get into education to get rich.”

Having been a teacher myself, I’ve heard all the misconceptions over the years. “You are so lucky to get all those paid vacations.” Teachers get paid only for the days they work. Each school year has so many working days—approximately 175 to 180. Each teacher’s yearly salary is divided by the number of work days and that is the teacher’s daily rate. Teachers do not get paid for summer nor can they collect unemployment. Usually teachers have their salaries divided into 10 equal payments (September through June) so receive only 10 checks. This means two months with no income. And if teachers are hired to teach summer school, this extra pay is not included when it comes time to figure out retirement.

I’ve also been told, “Teachers have such a short work day. Class starts at 8 and ends at 3. How hard can that be?” Personally I was at school in Oxnard by about 7:15 five days a week. I rarely took more than 20 minutes to eat lunch, made calls to parents during breaks, and made sure to use the bathroom whenever I was near the office because it’s not wise to leave 32 seventhgraders alone even for a few minutes. I did try to depart from school between 3:30 and 4 each afternoon but usually spent an additional hour each night doing paperwork and grading. The weekends were no exception. I have a friend who is still teaching first grade in Ventura, and she spends two to four hours each weekend at her school prepping for the following week. You see, teaching is one of those jobs that is never totally finished. Teachers can always find more to do.

And, of course, there’s the teacher pension, which is “making retired teachers rich at the expense of the taxpayer.”

First, a large part of that retirement was withheld from each teacher’s paycheck.

Second, the payout once a teacher retires is determined by the number of years taught, the age of the teacher, and the amount of the teacher’s salary. Unlike public officials in city, county, or state positions, public school teachers rarely make over $80,000 or $90,000 at the very top of the pay scale so pension amount limits are pretty much built in.

Unfortunately, California is one of the states that penalizes teacher pensions if social security is also on the table. A retired public school teacher who is a widow will not be allowed to collect

If we want good teachers in Carpinteria, we need competitive pay rates. If we want dedicated teachers in Carpinteria, we need a good benefit package. If we want the best teachers to stay teaching in Carpinteria, we need to give our teachers the best offer we can possibly afford. most if not all of her deceased husband’s social security benefits (or her own if she earned them). This seems not only unfair but should be illegal. There has been pressure on Congress over the years to correct this issue, but as we all know, Congress has been way too busy solving so many other problems.

Consider this, a person must have a four-year college degree plus one more year of graduate school to become a credentialed teacher in California. The average starting salary is $35,000 to $40,000.

If teachers took their college degrees to the business world, they would have the potential to make a lot more money.

But people generally become teachers because they want to teach, period. And, yes, along the way it would be nice to support a family, buy a house, pay for groceries and maybe even save for college and/or retirement.

We ask teachers to educate our children, counsel them, inspire them, protect them, keep them out of trouble, and on and on. We expect coaching and extracurricular events and field trips and phone calls and notes and personal attention. After all, we the taxpayers are the ones paying the bills.

Now I am generally conservative where money is concerned. I believe our school district should have a budget that provides enough to pay bills even if something unexpected happens. In its questionable wisdom, the state of California demands school districts come up with a budget before this same state tells each district how much funding it will get. Not a very bright or constructive way to do business. Thus each district has a general reserve fund, in part, to balance the unpredictable flow of money from Sacramento. How much is really needed in this fund is open to debate.

So I ask again, how much is a good teacher worth? As much as we can afford to pay and a little more. If we want good teachers in Carpinteria, we need competitive pay rates. If we want the best teachers to stay teaching in Carpinteria, we need to give our teachers the best offer we can possibly afford. We can’t afford not to.

CVN joins LA women

Gail Pejeau, Sharon Kaklamanos, Debbie Stevens Kuhn, Barbara Kuhn, Afrula Manos and Susan Frank jumped on the early train from Carpinteria to Union Station in Los Angeles and walked across the street to Olvera Street to soak in some Cinco De Mayo traditions. They had lunch at Golodrinas and shopped and listened to mariachis. The group’s choice to accessorize with matching flower headbands turned heads and even led to tourists and a newspaper photographing them. “People asked if we were the original hippies,” commented Stevens Kuhn.

The following counts taken from May 8-15 were compiled from Carpinteria Seal Watch volunteer reports. Carpinteria harbor seal beach closure runs from Dec. 1 to June 1 each year. Seal Watch volunteers are still welcome to sign up by calling 684-2247.

Visitors

Volunteers counted 1,135 people viewing the seals including two school groups. Visitors came from Oregon. Massachusetts, Louisiana, Missouri, California, Florida, Montana, Kentucky, Texas, Colorado, Maryland, Connecticut, Nevada, Washington D.C., Utah and Hawaii. Foreign visitors came from Korea, Mexico (one family brought a chair for grandma and stayed quite awhile), India, Australia, Scotland, Switzerland, Germany and a gentleman from the Netherlands who was about to hike the Pacific Crest Trail.

Disturbances

Helicopters and jet skis disturbed the seals, as well as beach walkers with a dog and an oil company employee yelling from the pier. There were several unknown disturbances.

Natural History Notes

Volunteers noted many whales and dolphins along with osprey, vultures, pelicans, egrets and herons. They also noted a seal with a bloody marks on its neck and a lot of mating activity, which is typical for this time of year.

The Carpinteria harbor seal rookery is located immediately east of Casitas Pier, between the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and Carpinteria State Beach. Please remember not to bring dogs, bicycles or loud voices to view the seals. Harbor seals, when disturbed, may flee and become separated from their pups.
