Caltrans interchange project approaches late summer start

Just three months from now an $80 million overhaul of Carpinteria traffic flow decades in the making will commence.

Kirsten Ayars, Caltrans public relations consultant, updated the Carpinteria City Council on May 23 on the Linden/Casitas Interchange Project, the third phase of Caltrans’ four-phase Highway 101 widening plans.

“You’re not going to see construction everywhere at first,” said Ayars. Work will begin in late August or early September in the Casitas Pass Road Overpass area. The project will take place in phases and ultimately span much of the city.

Components will open as completed, and the full project should be finished in 2020.

Major elements are the widening of Casitas Pass Road and Linden Avenue overpasses, the extension of Via Real across Carpinteria Creek to Casitas Pass Road and continuing to Linden Avenue, a new roundabout at Ogan Road, new highway bridges over Carpinteria Creek and four new sound walls to reduce freeway noise in neighborhoods. Bike and pedestrian improvements are included in most facets of the project.

Most local roadways will remain open during the daytime throughout the project, but over a three-week period in 2018, Linden overpass will be closed to vehicles. Caltrans hopes to keep it open to pedestrians and bicycles and is working to schedule the closure around key events, such as the California Avocado Festival.

The project will replace several on- and off-ramps, which will require closures.

Ayars assured the council that at no time will consecutive ramps be closed.

A contractor hasn’t been awarded the project yet, but Security Paving came in with the lowest price and is expected to be awarded the contract in coming week. The same company completed the Milpas to Hot Springs phase of highway widening.

Considerable public outreach is planned to keep locals informed of what traffic conditions to expect and where the next phase of construction will take place.

Traffic Solutions will operate a ride share program, and new bus service may be offered between Carpinteria and Goleta.

Carpinteria Creek Bike Path will be closed twice during construction, and prior to those closures, there will be outreach to affected neighborhoods.

Plans to replace the Carpinteria Avenue bridge over Carpinteria Creek are also moving forward, and construction is likely to take place in the midst of the interchange project. The $15 million project to replace the 80-year-old structurally deficient bridge is anticipated for construction in 2018 and 2019. Federal grant monies will cover 88 percent of the new bridge costs, while the City of Carpinteria must shoulder the remaining $1.9 million.

The goal during construction will be to keep one lane open in each direction during the day. Project outcomes include increased safety, improved water flow in the creek, widened sidewalks, added bike lanes and possibly links to the bike path on both side of the bridge.

Linden Avenue Overpass

The Highway 101 overpass at Linden avenue will be widened to include two lanes going toward the mountains and sidewalks and trees on both sides of the road. on the mountain side, Linden avenue will also have a new turn lane to access northbound Highway 101. The new ogan Road roundabout will connect to the new Via Real roadway to access northbound Hwy 101 with an extended on-ramp.

Casitas Pass Overpass

The Highway 101 overpass at Casitas Pass Road will be expanded to include two lanes going toward the mountains, one lane going toward the beach, a left hand turn lane to enter southbound Highway 101 and a median planter.

Via Real Extension

Via Real will be connected on the mountainside of Highway 101 through to Linden avenue. The Highway 101 on and off-ramps at Casitas Pass Road will also be reconfigured for safer access to the freeway.

Dobbins named Honorary Chair of the Boys & Girls Club Auction

Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club named Coastal View News co-publisher Gary Dobbins as honorary chair of the club’s 32nd Annual Kids Benefit Dinner and Auction, scheduled for Saturday, June 4 at the clubhouse, 4849 Foothill Road.

“This organization has been improving the lives of local youth for decades.

The club provides a healthy and safe environment and is staffed with caring individuals who foster confidence and success among children from all backgrounds. There is no worthier cause in Carpinteria. I’m honored to be recognized at an event that provides critical funding for the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club,” said Dobbins.

Dobbins’ own involvement with the club spans nearly three decades. As a recent transplant to Carpinteria in 1989, Dobbins began volunteering as a youth basketball coach. The experience served as an introduction to the community and led to his involvement in other organizations.

Since then, Dobbins has served on the boards of the Carpinteria Sanitary District, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, The Rhythmic Arts Project and the California Avocado Festival, and he co-founded Rods & Roses classic car show in 1998.

He has served as the city representative for the Community Access Channel for 25 years and been an active Rotarian for over 20 years.

Dobbins launched Coastal View News in 1994 with partners Rosemarie Fanucchi and Michael VanStry. The publishing company now includes Carpinteria Magazine, DEEP Surf Magazine and White Ledge Outdoor Journal.

This year’s auction has a Mardi Gras theme and is titled “Unmask a Child’s Potential.” It begins at 5 p.m. and will include a hosted bar, a buffet dinner, over 300 silent auction items and 15 live auction items. Live auction items include trips to Italy, Bali, Mexico or Africa, a barbecue for 100 guests, and a 2003 Jaguar donated by Michael Hammer of the Armand Hammer Foundation. Proceeds from this year’s Bids for Kids portion will be matched up to $30,000 by the Walter and Brenda Barrows Family Trust to support teen programming and scholarships.

Public chimes in on Santa Claus Lane plans

Roundabout and single railroad crossing criticized

Plans for Santa Claus Lane improvements got the third degree by business owners and beach users on the evening of May 19 at Rincon Beach Club, where Santa Barbara County held a public meeting to present preliminary plan details and collect input from stakeholders for a project years in the making and still many months from groundbreaking.

Parking, traffic movement and fencing were discussed, but the major sticking points for attendees were a proposed roundabout leading to the southbound freeway onramp and the single railroad crossing limiting beach access.

Funneling beach users to one central crossing would be inconvenient, traffic promoting and potentially more dangerous, members of the public asserted. The single proposed crossing is 14 feet wide

Conceptual plans for Santa Claus Lane, which are still evolving based on new public input, include a roundabout at the intersection of Santa Claus Lane, Sand Point Road and the Highway 101 southbound onramp. and has arms on each side that would lower with approaching trains. Four to five-foot fencing is proposed along both sides of the tracks.

County staff explained that its hands are tied when it comes to the number of beach access points. The Public Utilities Commission, which must approve projects in the railroad corridor, is reluctant to allow even one at-grade crossing. “The PUC’s policy is to eliminate at-grade crossings, not create new ones,” said county planner Ryan Cooksey.

Safety is one of the county’s main goals for the project. There was a fatality on the tracks near the beach several years ago, and the beach has grown so popular in recent years that hundreds of beach us-

ers cross the tracks en route to the sand on a typical summer day. County staff acknowledged that the project would be a tradeoff: reduced convenience for increased safety.

“It just seems so unfair to the public, at least to me it does,” a woman in the crowd told presenters. She noted she has used the beach for decades and advocated for maintaining its wilder qualities.

“Technically everyone who is crossing those railroad tracks is trespassing,” said County Planner Matt Schneider, adding that the railroad could decide to close access completely at any time. California, he reported, has more injuries and fatalities on train tracks than any other state, and efforts are underway to improve safety throughout rail corridors statewide.

On the east end of Santa Claus Lane, county staff has proposed a roundabout to reduce the speed of cars in front of commercial businesses and at the entrance to Sand Point Road. The feature would help discourage illegal and unsafe U-turns along the lane as well.

Several members of the audience pointed out that a roundabout could make the freeway entrance more dangerous by forcing slow moving vehicles to come out of the curve into oncoming freeway traffic. That issue, staff said,

would need to be addressed with Caltrans, which has jurisdiction over the short onramp.

“We’re pretty squeezed there,” said Chris Doolittle of County Public Works.

The freeway, railroad tracks and nearby businesses restrict options to improve traffic circulation on that end of the street.

“There’s not a lot we can do there, but hopefully we can improve what is there now,” he said.

Plans for Santa Claus Lane also include angled street parking, which would add about 50 spaces along the beach and 50 more in the commercial area. Landscaped bulb-outs and raised crosswalks—“speed tables”—are being considered to slow traffic and improve safety.

A bathroom, showers, trash receptacles and bike racks are planned near the railroad crossing. The county will also work in a drop-off zone near the crossing, but staff is still considering how to most effectively design the dropoff for improved convenience without added traffic congestion—another area of concern for members of the audience.

Design is still in its conceptual phase, and county staff plans to visit businesses along the street to collect more input before finalizing plans to begin the permitting process.

Carpinteria’s segregated school

I have a little secret to tell: not all of our public schools are diverse. At Canalino School’s campus there is a school called Carpinteria Family School; it should be known as the Caucasian Family School.

Although its mission statement states “the richness of the school’s diverse population and a daily commitment to multi-cultural education,” the school actually represents less than 1 percent of English learners in our community. If you look at CFS students’ parents or adoptive parents at least one parent is Caucasian.

I have watched the campus at Canalino grow into a segregated environment.

Measure U has given Carpinteria Unified School District the funds to build our schools into the future. Our board has a responsibility to follow the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and demand equality in our schools.

Let’s get some public comment on what we want the schools to look like; please let the CUSD board members hear your concerns. Let the debate begin.

Stribling’s tale a stroke of positivity

I loved reading Gail Stribling’s “At the stroke of one” (published in the May 19 issue of CVN). I wish I would have known her. Her outlook on life after having had a stroke 22 years ago was refreshing; nay, it was inspirational to all of us.

One thing I know for sure is that life throws curveballs. None of us are exempt.

How you choose to deal with the curveball will define you. Gail Stribling set the bar high. Very high.

My favorite line in her story: “I tried depressed, but it wasn’t much fun.”

Having had a stroke at age 49, I’ve learned that we adapt. Some of the most interesting people I know are those that have or have had near death experiences.

ICU time, I call it. Perspectives change.

Priorities change. In really good ways, if you pay attention.

Gail Stribling was a hero. Some people might have seen her as having disabilities, but I agree with her; “I think of them as differences.”

I wish I would have known her.

CUSD teachers face high costs, low pay

Letter writer Ashley Krause of Ontario, Calif., who is coincidently the daughter of school board member Terry HickeyBanks, left much out of her letter, “Don’t Bargain with Students” (CVN, May 12).

She criticized my statement that teachers would likely stop volunteering for extra-curricular clubs, after-hours phone calls and recommendation letters. Krause assumes the union is using the students as a “bargaining-chip.”

The statement regarding volunteerism was made in the context of the distractions district employees will face due to the school board’s impasse position.

The statement was not a threat; it was an observation and for CUSD teachers an ugly reality resulting from the board’s sustained failure to plan for adequate cost of living adjustments for employees.

Several other important details are absent from Krause’s letter. For those who live in Carpinteria, the cost of living is 57 percent higher than the national average; the average home costs 175 percent more than the national average; and the cost of living is 16 percent higher than the California average.

Over the last 15 years, the school board failed to keep up with increasing cost of living. As a result, district salaries are in the lowest quartile regionally. With the board’s current proposal (a 1 percent salary increase), employees will fall even further behind.

While district reserves increased by more than 300 percent, employees experienced an overall decrease in the value of their earnings. Throughout, district staff provided high levels of volunteerism while the school board continued to push employees closer to the fiscal fringes of our community. After 15 years of hyperconservative fiscal policies, district employees have reached a tipping point.

The school board’s bargaining position destabilizes employees who serve Carpinteria’s children and families. It ensures that their challenges will only become more acute in years-out, compounding fiscal hardships for employee families: paying mortgages (or rents), accessing quality childcare, covering medical expenses and other “bread and butter” issues.

I won’t blame Krause for being misinformed, but I will blame her for misinforming.

Das smears are disingenuous

The letter “Das inaction speaks louder than words” in the May 19 Coastal View News does not accurately reflect the facts.

I am not affiliated with or campaigning for Das Williams, but I am sensitive to misrepresentations and false rumors about candidates.

Assemblymember Williams supported the intent of SB 1530, but found the bill flawed. See Williams’ August 2012 letter to constituents (edhat.com/site/tidbit. cfm?nid=98717&showcomments=T).

Williams signed a revised version of the bill (AB 375), which passed both houses in September 2013. Governor Brown, who also supported the intent of the legislation but not some provisions, vetoed that version. See the October 2013 veto letter (edsource.org/wp-content/ uploads/old/AB_375_2013_Veto_Message1.pdf).

You might fault Williams for not jumping into the hysterical Sacramento dog pile of legislators rushing to approve SB 1530 without careful consideration of the actual content of the bill. You could also fault him for being young, bright and progressive. But the implication that his decision was improperly influenced by the teachers union is unfounded. What’s more, the letter’s insinuation that Williams and the teachers union are soft on teachers’ misconduct, even lewd acts, is a vulgar and shameful slur.

Christensen experience qualifies her for supe seat

I am supporting and endorsing Jen Christensen for the office of First District Supervisor. I worked with Jen when we were both employed by the Office of County Counsel, and in her present position as the County’s Investment Officer. I have known Jen for 15 years and strongly believe that she is by far the most qualified, most experienced and most independent candidate for First District Supervisor.

Jen has a long, successful experience working face-to-face with county department heads, members of the Board of Supervisors and the Count Executive Officer. This is the type of experience most valuable in a candidate. She is a person of intelligence, accomplishment and integrity, and I trust her to guide the county well into the future.

I served 16 years on the Carpinteria City Council and appreciate Jen’s skills and direct involvement in establishing the record-setting financial reserves the county now possesses for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. She has proven that she is both fiscally responsible and committed to protecting Santa Barbara County’s treasured environmental resources.

I do not generally make endorsements for county elected offices, but in this electoral race I am pleased to make an exception. The office of First District Supervisor is important to the residents of Carpinteria. I believe unconditionally that Jen is the best candidate, and the one most committed to the future of Santa Barbara County, and the territory within the First District.

Trump viability called into question

What happened in 2008 and 2012?

Republicans had not one but two opportunities to win the white house and failed. President Obama would even win a third term if he was eligible. The Tea Party, Republicans and Independents must stop whining and win in 2016. Knock on doors, make phone calls to people you know, use the phone book, email people, talk to common people at malls, schools, churches, neighborhoods, use social media.

The odds are four more years of whining having Donald Trump as the Republican presidential candidate. His only achievement is finding the path to four bankruptcies in the past 25 years.

He said, “I used the law four times. I did a very good job.”

Having Trump as president would cause another financial crisis similar to 2008. He would think of America as one of his corporations and would bankrupt the country, not making America great again. A rookie cop is always supervised by a seasoned officer, a doctor has to go through residence years, a real estate agent is supervised by a broker. No experience in the most important job in the world means the coming of a perfect storm. Republicans are in a no-win situation. First, it is almost impossible to win without the support of women, Hispanics and African-Americans. Donald Trump as president is a liability and a perfect storm!

Gail Leigh Hoke Stribling 9/11/1951 – 4/25/2016

Gail Leigh Hoke Stribling was born on Sept. 11, 1951 in Cedar Falls, Iowa and passed away peacefully on April 25, 2016 in Santa Barbara, Calif.

When she was 14, Gail moved with her family to Goleta, Calif. Four years later she met her husband-to-be, Rodney Stribling, and celebrated their wedding day a year later on Feb. 28, 1970.

Gail worked in the family’s Carpinteria-based business, Gallup and Stribling Orchids, for 20 years in sales and as the office manager. Meanwhile she was busy raising their two children, Mark and Joleigh.

Having suffered a stroke, Gail retired from the orchid business at 42 years of age, but continued to volunteer with organizations that were dear to her heart.

She helped out at the local library. She was on the Board of Directors for the California Women of Agriculture (CWA) and also served on the Board of Directors of HELP, a nonprofit organization that provides rides to Carpinteria residents who have no other means of transportation.

Gail is survived by her husband Rodney Stribling of Carpinteria, her mother Virginia Mainhood of Carpinteria, her sister Shelley (Hoke) Brantley of Colorado Springs, Colo., her brother Keith Hoke of Canyon Lake, Texas; her son Mark Stribling and his fiancee Kate Fagan of Santa Barbara, her daughter Joleigh Stribling O’Brien and her husband Brandon O’Brien of Santa Ynez, and four beloved grandchildren: Fiona O’Brien, Conor O’Brien, Benjamin Stribling and Riven Stribling.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gail’s memory to HELP, 1069 Casitas Pass Road, Carpinteria, CA 93013.

A celebration of life for Gail will be held at 1 p.m. on June 18 at the Lions Club, 6187 Casitas Pass Road in Carpinteria.

This is a life tribute to Barbara Helen Franklin Thomas, 62, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Barbara Thomas passed away on Monday, May 16, from cancer, in Hayden, Idaho. Survived by her husband Daniel Thomas and their five children: Lewis Thomas (CarmaLee) of Mountain View, Wyoming; Helen Stanger (Adrian) of Sykesville, Maryland; Carl Thomas (Jessica) of Shelbyville, Kentucky; Ryan Thomas of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Vaughn Thomas of Rexburg, Idaho.

Barbara took a special interest in each of her 13 grandchildren and was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend to all. She defined family broadly and passionately, in her own quiet, deep, steady way.

Barbara was born in Santa Barbara (hence her name) and raised with her favorite twin sister Betty in Carpinteria, California, together with their siblings Cathy Franklin Closson, John Franklin, Michael Franklin and Lea Taylor Ojeda.

Barbara graduated from Carpinteria High School with honors and from Brigham Young University (BYU) with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

She and Dan both taught math at Ricks College (later renamed BYU-Idaho) in Rexburg, Idaho, where they lived for 29 years. Barbara was much more than a teacher, however. She was a mentor, a listening ear, a guide and a mother figure to many of her students. Upon retirement, they relocated to Sandpoint, Idaho, and recently to Hayden, Idaho, where she and Dan created inviting homes and gardens to host their extended family and many friends. Barbara loved music, playing the organ, teaching piano and leading the choir.

Barbara loved unconditionally and is remembered for her compassion, her acceptance of all, her gentle strength, her wisdom and her faith. She bravely fought a myriad of health challenges the last few years and faced them with dignity and grace, never with self pity or complaint.

We can still hear her chuckle and see her smile, as she was always positive and gentle, and also playful and spirited.

Canalino principal honored for strides toward equity

the anti-defamation league annually honors educators making impressive efforts to close the achievement gap and address linguistic and cultural equity in their schools. this year, the league selected canalino Principal Jamie Persoon for the honor, along with santa Barbara area principals liz Barnitz and shawn carey. Persoon and her colleagues were lauded at a coral casino luncheon held on May 10. daniel Meisel, co-chair of adl’s santa Barbara/tri-counties civil rights committee, noted that when committee members began asking educators to recommend good local early intervention programs, multiple sources told them to take a look at what Persoon was doing at canalino. “We were impressed by her and her team’s thoughtful and efficient approach to assessing and addressing students’ academic and social needs,” said

Meisel. “our committee’s educators tell me it is a wonderful combination of best practices, and the early results appear to back that up.”

Persoon said that connecting with each of the school’s 530 students and their families is critical to canalino’s efforts to address the whole child. Everyone, from the teachers to the custodians, works to create a safe, warm, nurturing learning environment for students. “When we, as a system, acknowledge bias, remove barriers, provide access, and demonstrate our commitment to student support by allocating resources accordingly, we have communicated by word and deed to that child that we have every confidence that she can achieve at high levels,” Persoon said. “Given that message, the child will dedicate herself to the task at hand, feeling the safety and support around her.”

Friends of the Library inks five-year lease

the city council voted unanimously on May 23 to grant Friends of the carpinteria Library a five-year lease extension on the city-owned seaside building at 5103 carpinteria ave., where the allvolunteer nonprofit operates its used bookstore. the group raises critical funds to keep the neighboring library open and thriving. due to state and county funding reductions, Friends of the library’s

contributions now account for a quarter of the library operating budget.

Members of the group thanked the council for continuing to support its effort with below market rate rent and with a five-year lease rather than the one-year extensions put in place annually since the bookstore opened there in 2009. “the future of our bookstore looks very bright,” said Fol Board President Gaby Edwards.

Memorial Day ceremonies scheduled for cemetery

Beautification of local homes and gardens will benefit the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History this weekend. I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival The Santa Barbara Mission will take a backseat to the art at its footsteps this weekend when I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival returns for its 30th year. A man reported that his car had been stolen from his Jacaranda Way carport on May 7, but he believed the thieves wouldn’t get far because the vehicle would break down. Due to the fragility of the car, he had left it unlocked with keys in it. Officers located the vehicle at the polo fields on Via Real a couple of hours later. Apparently the coolant leak had made the thieves ditch the vehicle.

The owner arrived with some coolant to add and drove it home.

Nighttime nudist

Deputies investigated a report of a woman running around mostly naked and generally causing a scene at 1 a.m. on May 13 at Carpinteria State Beach.

Deputies caught up with the woman, 28, as she was seated in a truck and slipping on some sweatpants. They noted she’d already apparently found a top. She assured officers that she was OK and not the victim of a crime, so they could be on their way. Generally, officers noted, she was incomprehensible in her communications.

Three men outside the truck were accompanying her. They explained that she had driven them from Oregon and was trying to kick a meth habit. To combat the urge for meth, she had been drinking very heavily that day. Something flipped in her and she began acting bizarrely and running around naked screaming, they said.

Also, they were confident that if left alone she’d revert to her wild behavior. Deputies arrested her for public intoxication.

Unsafe backing

An officer witnessed a vehicle barreling in reverse on Hickory Street on May 13 at around 1 p.m. and pulled it over for the traffic violation of unsafe backing.

Two women occupied the vehicle along with a child. The driver, 31, explained that she was on the way to pick up her oldest child at school. She was found to have a warrant for her arrest for failure to appear in court for operating on a suspended license. She was arrested for the warrant and for operating on a suspended license.

The friend took the child.

Pushy pedestrian

A deputy cruising Yucca Lane became curious when he saw a 23-year-old man push a vehicle a few feet before setting the emergency break in a parking stall behind a bar. The man reportedly staggered to the officer’s location, where they chatted.

The man was cagey when quizzed about why he was pushing a vehicle. He never quite explained himself, which upset the officer. The man could only ramble something about working and hanging out with friends. He said the truck was his but he didn’t know where the keys were. The officer arrested him for public intoxication.

Cate School inducted 16 seniors to its chapter of the National Cum Laude Society on May 16 during a ceremony at the Katherine Thayer Cate Memorial Chapel. The inductees were William Bai, Ryan Cain, Eunbie Coe, Jacob Dexter-Meldrum, Julia Gan, Sam Hill, Jonathan Kim, Emma Liberman, Gabi Limón, Jessica Liou, Michael Nettesheim, Minty Pham, Cecelia Sanborn, Brandon Sugarman, Alondra TorresNavarro and Jaime Yrastorza.

The Cum Laude Society is modeled after Phi Beta Kappa and has grown to nearly 400 chapters nationwide. Students are selected for induction based on the quality of their academic work and for demonstrating good character, honor and integrity in all aspects of school life. Director of Studies Lisa Holmes led the ceremony. She told members of the Cate community, “While each one of these young scholars has a favorite discipline or an area of strength,” she said, “each has also excelled across disciplines and worked to become better readers, writers, creators, and problem solvers. In a community that values a life of the mind, they have shown us how rich that life can be, and in two, three, and four years at Cate they have taken full advantage of their gifts.”

Aliso students set sights on careers

Aliso School students listened to a sampling of career options during the school’s annual Career Day. As part of our Cradle-to-Career district-wide initiative, students were visited by a pilot, scientist, national park guide, court interpreter and paramedic.

The speakers were arranged through the Santa Barbara County Education Officer’s Partners in Education program. “Our students learned about the importance of bilingualism (or trilingualism) from the interpreter, who is fluent in English, Spanish, ASL, and French. They learned the differences between a captain and a pilot, the composition of different metals, and all of the marine animals and activities featured at the national park. A highlight was walking through an ambulance during lunch recess,” commented Principal Holly Minear.

The students swarmed the Santa Barbara Sea Center and the beach in Santa Barbara to get out into the field and enhance their science studies. Gardening, optimism and leaf blowers CVN

GARDEN GOSSIP CHRIS & LISA CULLEN It is my opinion that to be a gardener is to be an optimist, and I think that being an optimist is a good thing. Who would you rather spend time with: someone who complains about how bad it all is or someone who can find the good in any situation? Me, I like optimists, I guess that’s why I like gardeners. To be a gardener is to look forward to the next season and to envision all the wonders that unfold in each.

As I sit here in my office looking out upon my beautiful garden I hear the sounds of a leaf blower in the distance and it is so loud and annoying that it is overshadowing the lovely tinkling of my fountain and the singing of birds in my most delightful oasis. Sorry folks, using a leaf blower is not gardening. It is abuse.

But back to my point, when I refer to gardeners being optimists, I am not referring to the “gardeners” who blow dust around, destroying topsoil, making balls and cubes out of every plant in sight

and raking up all the beautiful mulch and leaves.

I am talking about real gardeners, those who nurture plants and love nothing more than spending time in the garden. In a real gardener’s hands, a garden thrives, looking better and better, year after year.

The soil is nurtured also. With layers of compost and mulch, it is dark, soft and full of life. A real gardener is a lover of life and a creator of beauty. A real gardener is an artist of the earth.

I love that real gardeners are always up to some project or another. There are a number of Carpinteria couples I know who are continually working on improvements to their property; moving plants around, building raised beds, using their tractors to create berms and swales, laying mulch and just having fun. That is what I mean when I say gardeners are optimists. These people are so much fun to be around because of the unbridled enthusiasm, creativity and optimism.

So, what does this have to do with anything? Force yourself out into your garden this summer. Plant some fruit trees, a vegetable garden or even some flowers or succulents. Just do it, and you may discover that your attitude toward life improves. It’s pretty hard to be on a bummer when you’re playing with your plants and flowers. Not to imply that you are on a bummer, but I think you know what I mean. Fill your garden with joy (not leaf blowers).

Llama skate art show raises funds for skatepark

Skateboard decks became canvases for artists participating in the current Lucky Llama art show of 20 painted decks gracing the coffee shop walls. Art documentary set to screen May 31

War on the Shore IV: Carpinteria – Bishop Diego Alumni Football Game

The Carpinteria versus Bishop Diego high school football rivalry will be renewed this spring. This time it will be the gridiron gladiators from yesteryear, as alumni from both schools once again clash on the turf of Santa Barbara City College’s La Playa Stadium. In the game dubbed War on the Shore IV, former players from both squads will put on the pads on May 28 with the kickoff slated for 4 p.m.

The upcoming game, the fourth in the alumni series, has been a way to rejuvenate the fierce, traditional rivalry; and proceeds from the game will be distributed to the athletic programs of both schools. Although the Warriors have historically dominated the high school rivalry with a record of 52-18-3, the Cardinals have won the last five games. Bishop alumni prevailed in the last two games played in 1992 and 2008 after Carpinteria won the inaugural contest.

History books

The football rivalry between the two schools began during the World War II era in 1944 when the Warriors beat then Santa Barbara Catholic High School by a score of 13-0. After over a decade of frustration, Bishop got its first win in the series in 1960 by a score of 20-0, a year after moving to the school’s present day location and changing names to Bishop Diego.

Lou Panizzon, who was head football coach at Carpinteria from 1975 to 1989, remembers his first game coaching against his rivals. “My first year, 1975, we played them (Bishop) at San Marcos, and we blew them out, and we won the CIF championship that year,” recalled Panizzon. “That game was kind of an eye-opener for me, that we had a pretty dog-gone good team, and we were going to be real successful,” he added.

Panizzon, who would go on to win three more championships with CHS in 1987, 1988 and 1989, remembers another big game in 1978, one he referred to as the “gold jersey” game. Present day assistant athletic director Henry Gonzales (Class of 1980) also has a clear recollection of that game. “The idea came from that college football season. Notre Dame came in with the green jerseys against USC,” explained Gonzales whose fellow team captain Charlie Thompson, and a handful of other team leaders, hatched a plan to surprise everyone by unveiling gold jerseys for the big game the following season.

The specially-ordered uniforms that replicated the old Warrior jerseys of years past were purchased primarily from the money raised from teammate Mark Head’s prized pig that was raffled off to stock some lucky winner’s freezer with pork products.

Prior to the player introductions at the big game that year, the Carpinteria squad changed into the new unis, hiding in the closed locker room of the Carpinteria Middle School field. They ran out as a team, donning the throwback apparel to the surprise of the Warrior faithful. “Charlie Thompson and I go out to the middle of the field for the coin toss, and they (the Bishop captains)

Although Carpinteria gave up a big play to the Cardinals to open the 1978 game, the fired-up, underdog Warriors broke a two-game losing streak to Bishop by the convincing score of 30-7.

Kickoff for Saturday’s game is at 4 p.m. at SBCC’s La Playa Stadium, after party to follow at the nearby Stagecoach Museum.

Rivalry notes

The inaugural Carpinteria-Bishop Diego alumni football game took place in 1984 at SBCC’s La Playa Stadium.

Entitled “The Alumni Classic Football Game I,” the game was won by the Warriors, 14-7.

Although Carpinteria has had the upperhand throughout the high school football rivalry, Bishop Diego was very competitive in the 1990s. Under coach Norris Fletcher, the Cardinals went to their first CIF title game in 1992 and ended up tying the Warriors that year 6-6. Bishop also captured its first win in the 1992 Alumni Classic II game by a score of 28-7.

“The biggest part of that rivalry is that Carp kids would go to Bishop, too,” said former coach Lou Panizzon. “We knew each other, then we competed against each other in every sport, too,” added the former principal.

“There’s a great respect between the two schools as far as the rivalry,” said Assistant Athletic Director Henry Gonzales, former Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athlete of the Year. “Yeah, you want to beat Bishop; you want to beat Carpinteria. But I think deep down, there’s a respect. They are two programs you can be proud of.”

CHS hires bball coaches

Carpinteria High School announced that it has filled vacancies atop the boys and girls basketball programs. Jon Wyers will take the helm of the boys program, while Amy Bryant will step up to lead the girls squads.

Wyers, a former head coach and athletic director within the Tri-County Athletic Association at Villanova Prep, will be the successor to the John and Johnny Ward era at CHS. Additionally, Wyers brings community college coaching experience from both Allan Hancock and Ventura City colleges. Wyers played high school at Righetti before moving on to Hancock and ultimately San Diego State University.

“I look forward to continuing with the great tradition that the Ward family has established over the past 11 years at Carpinteria,” said Wyers. “The culture I hope to instill around the boys basketball program is one of hard work, which will enable us to keep improving as a program, individually as players/coaches/ people and prepare us for anything we may face in the future on or off the court.”

Bryant will step up from within the

Warrior girls’ program to fill the shoes of longtime coach Dan Mercer. Bryant served as Carpinteria’s junior varsity coach for the last five seasons and is also a teacher at the school in the social studies department.

Bryant coordinates a flagship college and career readiness program titled, “Get focused, Stay focused.” She played basketball at Scotts Valley High in Santa Cruz and is a product of Westmont College where she was actively involved in athletic programs.

Upon her hiring, Bryant stated, “I am so honored to have been selected as the girls varsity basketball coach. I would like to thank former coach Dan Mercer for all the guidance and leadership that he demonstrated during his time at CHS.” Regarding the naming of the new head coaches, Athletic Director Pat Cooney said, “Carpinteria is very fortunate to have the opportunity to have two quality educator/coaches at the head of the basketball programs.

All Star Boys Are Champions at Camarillo Tourney

Carpinteria’s AYSO U14 All Star boys won all four of their games and emerged as champions at the 23rd Annual Strawberry Cup Soccer Tournament in Camarillo.

In the group stage, Carpinteria United showed impressive offensive firepower with identical 6-2 victories over opposing teams from Encino and Woodland Hills, then finished with a hard-fought 1-0 shutout of Beverly Hills. In the final, Carp United dominated Saugus 4-0 to claim the championship. “Our young men played solid defense, our goalkeeping was stellar, our passing was crisp, and we created great scoring opportunities, enabling seven different players to score. We are all extremely proud of them,” said coach Jim Robbins. The same team recently took second place at Moorpark’s Apricot Jam and third place Oxnard Sports Fest.

Track and Field

The Carpinteria High School track and field team scored 20 points to finish 10th at the CIF Finals at Cerritos College on May 20. It was the most points the Warriors have scored since they notched 20 in 2004. Jimmy Graves and Brian Buchmiller started the day by finishing second and third respectively in the pole vault, both clearing 13 feet.

Chance Wright finished eighth with a time of 15.62 in the 110 high hurdles. Wright also finished fourth in the 300m hurdles with a personal record of 40.67. On the girls side, Annalisa DeAlba finished eighth in the discus with a toss of 104-10.

U10 girls grab second place at Beach Bash

The Carpinteria United U10 girls’ all-star team earned a second-place finish at the Beach Bash Tournament in Huntington Beach. The Carpinteria all-stars earned a spot in the finals by defeating Chino Hills, Hesperia and Culver City in pool play. In the finals, the local girls faced a talented Santa Barbara team but lost despite their best effort. Head coach Richard Pakes was pleased with the play of his team. “I thought we played some of our best soccer of the year in pool play. We would have loved to win the championship, but Santa Barbara played well and executed their game plan against us. I am hopeful we get the chance to play them again in our next tournament, because I think our girls are up for the challenge.” The U10 team will play in

Ben Watts was singled out at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table annual awards ceremony on May 18. The former Carpinteria High School athlete and current basketball and floor hockey player won the Mayor’s Trophy, the award for top area Special Olympic Athlete of the Year. His coaches commended his resolve to get better, commitment to sport and cooperativeness as reasons for nominating him. Watts was also recognized at the May 19 Special Olympics Inspire Greatness Luncheon for the same award.

Following high school, where Watts played both football and track, he has continued to volunteer with Warrior athletic teams. He works at Carl’s Jr. and is a talented artist in the form of sketching superheroes.

The Carpinteria High School baseball team fell to Savanna High School of Anaheim in the opening game of the wild card round of the CIF playoffs by a score of 1-0. A pair of right-handers, Warrior Sal Delgado and Savanna’s Pat Showalter, dueled to a 0-0 tie through six innings. The Warrior offense was led by three players with two hits apiece: Malcolm Gordon, David Martinez and Coco Carrillo. “One of the most successful Warrior baseball seasons in more than a decade came to a close on Tuesday afternoon in Carpinteria,” said coach Pat Cooney. In 2016, the Warriors tallied 16 wins overall, the most since the CIF Finalist season in 2000, and they compiled win streaks of six and seven games over the course of the schedule.

Life’s a beach

As I sip on my hot coffee, trying to warm and prepare for the 42-degree chill in the air, I turn left onto quiet Carpinteria Avenue. As I proceed down the street, the only signs of life are the smell of donuts at Tyler’s, the early opener at Lucky Llama and the 76 Station attendant.

I pull into my regular parking spot at the Boys & Girls Club, where there are just a few regular vehicles, as well as those parked at Carp High—the super early birds! I begin crossing Foothill Road and my path becomes light via “the 4:30 a.m. Bear/Spider Web Clearers.” They let me know all is well and wish me a good morning.

As I continue on my path, it is quiet and dark (#justmeandthewildones).

Dawn begins breaking, and as I look up the mountain, I see the early morning moms with their bright headlights just breaking the crest of the top of the trail.

I soon come to “the” awe-inspiring hiker, who I always have to give a double take, as she is strong and steady in her stride. Is it Mrs. Pulido or a mama bear?

Ultimately, they’re one in the same!

Clearing the top, ready for my cool down, up the fire road, everyone is now on their way down. All wishing support, a good morning and a great day. How could it not be? We live in paradise.

It is now just me, huffing for that fantastic finish at the gate. That epicness of when the sun is just breaking to the east of Rincon Mountain, and I keep waiting, walking and watching for that perfect shot.

The light crests that one window on TV Hill in Santa Barbara, slowly, thereafter lighting up the Bird Sanctuary, then Aliso, and as I climb to the gate, those rays make it all worth it. It lights up the most incredible town.

Franklin Trail has become an every morning and every day passion for its beauty, for its exercise, its nature, and most of all, the community it has created.

The other day when returning from walking the dogs on the beach, a smiling neighbor asked me if I had seen the whales. He was very excited. We have been seeing mother and baby whales every day for a while, and everybody who sees them is very happy. These sightings are also documented in the Sealwatch logs.

I love Carpinteria for its wild places. Anywhere in the city we can reach out to nature: the beach and ocean, mountains, saltmarsh, a native creek and Harbor Seals are all easily accessible.

Not every square inch of Carpinteria has been exploited, and we still have our nature. We are fortunate to live where other people come to vacation.

The beach is one of the best examples of nature’s bounty. The beach is beautiful, exciting and changes every day. A lot of people like to surf and swim. The ocean can be wild and awesome or a place of gentle calm and tranquility. Sunsets often attract many people to the shore and bluff top to watch the sky, water and sand reflect vivid reds and oranges.

And you don’t just see the wild creatures—whales, dolphins, birds and harbor seals—at the beach, but also people. Everybody seems to love the beach. It’s a public meeting place, and we get to see friends as well as tourists from the campground. I love it around Thanksgiving when you can see people for the first time in 20 years…at the beach.

The tide, waves, wind and vultures pretty much keep the beach clean and well maintained. People also clean and take care of the beach, as they do other wild places in Carpinteria. Plastic is a big problem at the beach but we are seeing less Styrofoam and plastic bags, thanks to government action.

Rob buRke I am not a small guy. I am no longer a competitive bodybuilder, but I still carry 230 pounds of the acquired muscle mass.

Therefore, certain venues are not friendly to guys my size—theater seats, sports cars and most notably, airlines.

Airlines are probably the worst. Sitting in those little Canadair regional jets is an extremely uncomfortable experience. In order to keep from spilling into the person next to me, I have to pull my arms in front of me so that I can cross them into a pretzel-like formation and then lean way over to the opposite side. Try that for two hours and you’ll be sending love letters to Amtrak even if it takes three times as long.

One day, I was on a fully booked Canadair flight, making my way up to Seattle from Santa Barbara. My seat was in the last row across from the toilet and against the window. To my right was the chair of doom. Predictably, my right arm will be vying for a physiological easement from my row-mate’s left arm, if not the exclusive rights to the shared armrest obtained by the legal precedence of first-come and the armrest is mine.

I watched as each seat on the plane filled up with smallish people who all would have been perfect row-mates. Maybe the adjacent seat would stay empty? I leaned over to the flight attendant who was already getting the plane ready for departure and I asked her if it was a full flight?

She smiled and said, “Yes, unfortunately, we’re booked.”

“Do you know who is sharing my row,” I asked.

She shook her head and continued to get the flight ready for departure.

A few minutes passed. My empathetic flight attendant walked up and leaned inward toward me to tell me that I was in luck; they were ready to close the door and it looks that I’ll have the row to myself.

No sooner did she put the period at the end of her statement, we both saw a large man walking down the aisle toward the rear of the plane. Mid-cabin, the flight

attendant turned back toward me and mouthed that she was sorry.

I gave her a closed lip smile and shrugged.

As he got closer to me, I was able to get a good look, but it wasn’t until he got right up to my row that I noticed, oh my God, he’s missing his left arm!

Now, I’m probably going to burn in perpetuity for being so happy and my facial expression played like a confession since the man said, “Congratulations, this is your lucky day.”

He continued to appease my guilt with “Hey, I know what you’re thinking and it’s cool. You’re not the first to be so fortunate.”

I felt like crap. At this juncture, I would have happily offered him the window seat and the armrest for his right arm, but something interesting began to happen as we continued the mea culpa acknowledgements. I could see that he had a great attitude and his energy didn’t attract sympathy, but instead allowed me to recognize how useless self-pity can be.

Now, before you go thinking that this is some concocted way to get you to see the benefits of a positive attitude, let me assure it’s not. I didn’t make this up. However, if you’re already pondering how you would adjust to losing a limb or battling an ailment like Parkinson’s disease, take it from me, you would find a way to keep going. We can’t waste a day dwelling on the things that cannot be changed. Look at our experiences as gifts that help us appreciate each and every day we’re fortunate enough to grace this planet and share it with great company such as yourself.

So I guess you can say that the moral of this story is to make limbs into limb-onade.

Sorry, that was bad, but there is power behind using our capacity to be creative and to construct an attitude that supports the life we want, regardless of the misfortunes that are really fortunes to be realized.

Making this story relevant to wellness is easy. When we think from a powerful position of positive thinking and faith in one’s own creativity to succeed, our moms were right, we can do anything.

Club SCene Carpinteria Lions prove kings of District Convention

The Carpinteria Lions Club came home big winners from its District Convention.

In addition to winning Number One Large Club, they also received club awards for 100 percent Club, Short Tail Award and Yearbook Sweepstakes. Individual members receiving Short Tail awards were Lions Barbara Hurd, Martha Hickey and Michael Hickey. Interim Fire Chief shares updates with Morning Rotary

Interim Fire Chief Jim Rampton gave an informative talk to Morning Rotarians at their Wednesday meeting at the Woman’s Club. Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District has about 30 employees with about nine on daily shifts around the clock. Rampton told the club that firefighters are trained to respond to fires and a host of other emergencies including automobile accidents, hazardous waste spills, ocean emergencies and many unexpected events including major earthquakes, storm SuBMITTED PHOTO damage and floods. Rotary Program Director Kevin More personally, Rampton shared that Baird. he, his father and his grandfather in total had dedicated over 90 years in fire service over their careers. Prior to working at CSFPD, Rampton was fire chief at the station where his grandfather had served.

Three Cub Scouts earn highest award

Carpinterians Ryder Green, Conner Gralewski and Justin Main received a Cub Scout’s highest honor, the Arrow of Light badge, at a ceremony held on May 20 at Carpinteria State Beach. The seven rays of light depicted on the badge represent wisdom, courage, self control, justice, faith, hope and love. Regional Order of the Arrow members from Santa Barbara conducted the important ceremony, which also serves as a bridge for the boys to ascend into the Boy Scouts. As each boy crosses the bridge to Boy Scouts, an arrow marked with his name is shot through the fire into a bale of hay. Boy Scouts from Carpinteria’s Troop 50 were on hand to receive the boys into the troop after the bridging ceremony. “No Cub Scouts were injured during this part of the program,” reported troop leader John Thomas.

Morning Rotary sponsors youth leadership training

Each year area Rotary Clubs sponsor leadership training for local teens, and this year Carpinteria Morning Rotary Club sent Ryan Fly and Roderick Hutchinson to the three-day event. Motivational speakers, good food and good companionship inspired participants to strengthen themselves both mentally and physically at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. They were challenged to set new goals and given pathways to achieve them. These young leaders both reported that it was a life changing experience. Scouts pack it in, pack it out

Troop 50 Boy Scouts ventured deep into the Los Padres National Forest for their most recent backpacking trip. They packed carefully, considering every ounce that they would care for the two-night trip. On day one, they hiked three miles of steep, rugged terrain to upper Reyes Creek in the Sespe Wilderness, then covered another two miles to Beartrap Camp. Troop leader John Thomas described the trip as a “character builder for the boys.”

Natural history notes: Harbor seals are very selective in choosing rookery sites.

From Mexico to beyond Point Conception, there are five known mainland rookeries; these are at La Jolla (Children’s Pool), Point Mugu Naval Base, Carpinteria, Ellwood and Point Conception. Numbers of pups at Ellwood are reportedly declining or nonexistent because of human disturbance. The rookery at La Jolla is the subject of much controversy, with community dissension over protection of the seals.

The Carpinteria harbor seal rookery is located immediately east of Casitas Pier, between the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and Carpinteria State Beach. Please remember not to bring dogs, bicycles or loud voices to view the seals. Harbor seals, when disturbed, may flee and become separated from their pups. Bruijns cruise Europe

Martijn, Gail and Sophie De Bruijn traveled in the south of Portugal and Spain and south of the European countries on an excursion to Tangiers, Morocco. They explored the Algarve region in Portugal before launching on the ferry from Tarifa Port in Spain. The “beautiful experience” concluded with an Irish wedding and family reunion in Algarve.
