Barrows named auction co-honorary chair

Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club supporter Walter Barrows will join Gary Dobbins as co-honorary chair of the club’s 32nd Annual Kids Auction & Dinner. “I’m truly honored to be a part of the mission and support the youth in Carpinteria,” said Barrows.

Barrows was born in Long Beach and attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo where he received his PhD in Horticulture.

In 1957, Barrows opened a landscape company called Landscape by Barrows. At that time, he was also the president of the California Landscape Association. To further pursue his passion, he hosted a radio show on KTMS called “Dig It, Plant and Garden Advice.” His co-host, Martha Bull, coined his nickname, “Dr. Dirt,” which Barrows eventually copyrighted.

After his retirement in 2000, Barrows spent SUBMITTED PHOTO a significant amount of time volunteering on Walter Barrows will be one the board for of two honorary chairs at the Mission this weekend’s Boys & Girls County Boy Club Auction.

Barrows has been highly supportive of UBGC and contributed to the new gym floor in the Carpinteria Club, which was unveiled on April 18. “We look forward to honoring him alongside Dobbins at the Carpinteria Auction & Dinner,” stated a press release from the club.

Driving desire to help others CVN

MISSION POSSIBLE BARBARA DUNLAP For years Terry Moore noticed a HELP car driving by his home, and it piqued his interest. After he retired he decided to look further into the organization, and he liked what he saw.

In 2008, he became a volunteer driver for HELP, which provides rides to Carpinteria residents who can’t drive or don’t have their own cars.

“Terry constantly talked about HELP,” says his wife, Dianne Moore. “According to him, it was the most wonderful thing in the world!”

Terry was so enthusiastic that Dianne joined the group as a dispatcher in 2010, and she found it equally rewarding. She has since become a dispatch coordinator.

Here’s what this dedicated couple say about volunteering for HELP: Who uses HELP services?

TM: Our clients are mostly seniors who no longer drive. But we also serve disabled people and middle-aged clients who don’t have access to a car.

What services does HELP provide?

TM: One service offers people rides to Santa Barbara and back. It’s mostly limited to social service and medical appointments,

but we also offer rides for compassionate visits—for example, to see someone in the hospital or to visit a cemetery.

DM: The second service provides rides within Carpinteria. Our drivers take people many places, including the grocery store, beauty shop and doctors’ offices. Some clients use HELP regularly.

We drive one senior to the gym and some developmentally disabled clients to work.

We’ve also started a third service to the Friendship Center, an adult day care center in Santa Barbara.

What are your duties, and how much time do they take each week?

TM: I drive one full day a week, and I serve as the board treasurer, which takes about another four hours a week. I also do some other jobs, including working to automate our client file.

DM: Pat Arellanes and I share the position of dispatch coordinator. We work at that about two hours a week. I also work as a dispatcher two hours a week, and sometimes I fill in for other people.

What’s the most memorable part of your jobs?

TM: I enjoy the close relationships I’ve developed with some clients. I learn their special needs, and they try to schedule their appointments when I’m driving.

They have become like family.

DM: I enjoy the clients, too. When I work as a dispatcher, a lot of people who have gotten to know me call to say, “Hi. How are you doing?”

HELP of Carpinteria provides rides to more than 600 clients a year and relies exclusively on volunteers to serve as drivers and dispatchers.

Dispatchers work two-hour shifts. They answer the office phone, schedule rides and provide support for driver volunteers.

Drivers who transport riders to and from Santa Barbara work from about 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. once a week. Carpinteria has two shifts: 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

According to HELP Executive Director Judy Goodbody, these hard workers play a huge role in helping non-driving Carpinteria residents remain independent in their homes. She said, “Our volunteers are community heroes who are making Carpinteria a better place to live.”

Carpinteria’s new 77-suite retirement home is just months away from opening. on May 25, ground was ceremonially re-broken during construction at GranVida senior and Memory Care, which is expected to open its doors this December at 5464 Carpinteria Ave. The existing office building at the site is now being remodeled into a new facility that will provide 55 assisted living apartments and 22 secure suites for alzheimer’s and dementia sufferers. additionally, GranVida will have common areas, activity and fitness rooms, private and common dining services, a bistro and outside patio space. steadfast Management and seniority, inc. will manage the new facility; seniority serves 6,200 residents in 50 retirement communities.

Volunteers sought for Franklin Trail maintenance campout

Work continues on the third and final phase of Carpinteria’s Franklin Trail, and this weekend, in honor of national Trails Day on June 4, the public is invited to pitch in. A three-day trail maintenance campout coordinated by the Los Padres Forest Association will have volunteers working the North Franklin Trail along Alder Creek in the Carpinteria backcountry. Friday through Sunday, June 3 through 5, volunteers will base camp at Middle santa Ynez Campground and drive to the trail head near Jameson Lake to work the trail. Food will be provided and organizers promise enough fun around the trail work to make it a good time for everyone. Participants can bring the family, enjoy the nearby hot springs, help clear the historic trail and sing songs around the campfire. To sign up, email to INFO@LPForest.org.

Family School doesn’t discriminate

In response to Jessica Isaac’s letter “Carpinteria’s segregated school” regarding Carpinteria Family School: I say, ha!

You have no idea what your “little secret” is really about! You sound as if you’re insinuating that CFS is a hand-picked group of elite children all of the same race. Far from the truth! These kids are in CFS because their parents signed them up years in advance and volunteered to help assist teachers in the classrooms their children attend; spending hours each week when they otherwise could be working and making money. It’s the same concept Lou Grant Parent-Child Workshop is built upon (another fine Carpinteria school). These kids are in this school because their parents chose to be a very active part of their education—some almost on a daily basis. If the writer wants to do this, regardless of her race, go ahead and sign your kids up and get on the waiting list—there’s no restriction of race or ethnicity. As long as you’re willing to actively participate, it’s open to everyone.

Where do we go now?

I first want to thank Jessica Isaac for her letter last week. It was brave, Jessica, to begin this debate, and I think it is important that we have it.

I’ve imagined outrage, disbelief, agreement and indifference to the letter. I hope to clarify with some statistics (source greatschools.com). Canalino and Aliso schools are both roughly 80 percent Hispanic and 17 percent white. Carpinteria Family School is split 64/24—in the opposite direction. CFS is 64 percent white and 24 percent Hispanic. Summerland School, also operated by Carpinteria Unified School District, is 58 percent white, 29 percent Hispanic. Those are the statistics, and they are clearly skewed.

I’m not accusing these schools of being racist, and I know everyone only has their student or children’s best interests at heart. But the issue is bigger, and it’s socio-economic.

CFS is essentially a charter school that requires parental participation. This is not a possibility to working families and only available to those who have the ability to schedule time during the work week to do so. Summerland School has a similar issue. Composed of many Carpinteria transfers, Summerland is out of reach for the average working family. The commute and lack of access to after school care puts this school far out of reach for the average family.

I don’t know the answer, but I want to keep this debate going. Let’s keep it going, Carpinteria! These are good, healthy debates for communities to have, and we will only become a better community if we learn and grow from it. This is not about hate and division—this is about learning, growing and coming together.

Lottery precludes racism

I am responding to Jessica Isaac’s CVN letter, “Carpinteria’s segregated school,” which unfairly mischaracterized Carpinteria Family School.

CFS is a small, public K-5 school of choice, and is open to everybody, regardless of ethnicity. However, being a small and highly desirable school, many more people sign up than can fit into its three classrooms. The solution is to conduct a random lottery to choose the entrants—a fair system where each student has equal chance.

Does this guarantee the ethnic percentages will match those of the community?

Of course not, since they depend on the ethnicity of those who choose to sign up, and the random selection of the lottery. All kinds of statistical outcomes are possible. The misleading statistic used to illustrate the “segregation” of CFS is that it contains less than 1 percent of the English-learners in our community. If true, then it’s no fault of the school—it’s simply the result of how many Englishlearners signed up and how many got chosen in the fair lottery. If Ms. Isaac really cared about diversity, she would not have slandered CFS using language that would likely result in even fewer Englishlearners choosing to sign up.

Currently CFS has students with roots from Mexico, Nicaragua, China, India and more. Ms. Isaac’s comments, using false and inflammatory terms such as “Caucasian Family School,” are deeply insulting to these families, as well as any decent person who reads them. Furthermore, her insinuation that parents or adoptions with mixed ethnicity somehow make the school less diverse than would families with pure ethnicity is illogical at best.

Ironically, CFS is a California Distinguished School, based on values such as diversity, scholarship, sustainability, honesty and respect for others. Ms. Isaac would have benefited from attending such a school.

Adieu to outgoing board member

Volunteering is a tiring, often thankless job. Jessica Isaac has served on our Parents for Canalino board for eight years (six years as president), year round. She has worked long hours, faced immense deadlines and often invested her own salary back into Canalino School. To say that her work has consistently exceeded anyone’s expectations is an understatement.

Jessica’s efforts and dedication to all the children of Canalino have not gone unnoticed. As she graduates on from Canalino, we want to honor her for all that she has done, both in the classrooms and on her own time, to ensure the success of all children. She has always been one to press on far beyond the school bell that signals the end of the day. She has served as a leader, mentor, tutor, coach and dear friend to many.

In honor of her service the last eight years, we will dedicate the first full week of June to Jessica every year. Signifying her passion for enrichment and art, Canalino will proudly carry on art at lunch, dance lessons, enrichment assemblies and of course Canalino I Madonnari throughout our halls and playground.

Jessica’s contributions will continue to impact Canalino students for years to come. Words cannot express our most sincere gratitude for her service. It has

been an honor serving with her.

Good intentions, bad results

Two of Carpinteria’s public elementary schools consist of primarily white students while the other two public elementary schools are mainly non-white students. This is an ugly fact. Just take a tour through the schools themselves and take a look. The differences are striking, especially because last month was the 62nd anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to outlaw school segregation in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling. In 2016, isn’t it illegal to separate children at public schools according to race?

How did this happen? I believe that Carpinteria Unified School District has engaged in policies and practices that have resulted, indirectly, in institutional racism. I don’t believe that the CUSD School Board, school administrators, teachers or parents deliberately acted to exclude non-white children from specific schools. However, the stratified results remain clear and striking, as if it were planned.

Children are acutely aware of rules, with a compass that guides them towards justice. They recognize immediately when someone receives more or less of their fair share. This was illustrated recently in a story from a friend who works at one of the primarily non-white schools. A student asked her about the other nearby elementary school, saying, “Are only white children allowed there?”

As a community, how can we answer that child? While accidental inequality may have snuck into our schools, there is a chance now to correct this wrong. We must first acknowledge the segregation exists and then work to dismantle it. Of course it’s easier to deny a problem exists and do nothing, or to get defensive and blame the messenger. But what does that teach our children?

Trump stands out

I had to laugh when I read the letter from Rogelio Delgado, who stated that Donald Trump has no experience, therefore is not qualified to be president.

He has a lot more experience than the community organizer we elected in 2008. Prior to that election, I stated, in these very pages, that electing Obama president, would make about as much sense as General Eisenhower choosing a brand new second lieutenant to plan the invasion of Normandy in World War II. What did we get? The finest health care system in the world was largely destroyed. People ended up losing their health care plan, losing their doctor, and paying a whole lot more for it. Our once proud nation is not feared by our enemies, and our allies can no longer trust us. Rather than have pride in our great country, our president apologizes for it.

So what would Mr. Delgado have us do? Nearly three-quarters of Americans do not trust Hillary Clinton, and with good reason. Any other person would be in jail for a fraction of her security violations. In the military, I held a Top Secret clearance, so I know the requirements. If I had merely taken a classified document home in my briefcase I would have been in violation of the law. She transmitted and received numerous Top Secret documents through her private, unapproved, unsecured email server. The recent Inspector General report documents that she was warned numerous times by staff members, but told them, “Do not bring this up again.”

The success of Donald Trump is a sign that people are fed up with politics as usual.

The far left has done great damage. Do you really want a Supreme Court that makes political correctness the law of the land?

Follow the money

We all know that politicians who take money from unions and special interests are beholden to those interests when they vote. On June 7, voters in the 1st District of Santa Barbara County will choose between Das Williams and Jennifer Christensen.

Williams, who also filed his campaign committee “Das Williams For Senate 2020” on July 31, 2015, has raised $578,845 as of April 23 including his Supervisor’s campaign. The majority of this was from unions plus $39,000 from gaming tribes.

Christensen has accepted a total of $10,000 from one union, the Deputy Sheriff’s Union (her husband is a 34 year retired deputy sheriff) The balance of her donations have been private donors.

Again, why is this important? The county budget is $1 billion dollars annually.

One example of its spending and potential conflicts of interest involves paying its 4,000 employees, most of which are represented by the SEIU Union. That union has contributed over $30,000 to Williams. Generous pay raises, health benefits and pension contributions have been commonly given by past boards of supervisors. Past boards have kicked the proverbial can, so now “the County has an unfunded liability of $873 million and a stack of deferred maintenance and capital building projects”(Santa Barbara News-Press article April 12 by Emily Leslie, staff writer).

Christensen is committed to cutting wasteful spending and “truly” balancing the budget. She is in charge of investing the county’s $1 billion so it’s safe and liquid to meet its annual expenditures. She is also Chair of the Pension Committee for the County and serves on the City Police and Fire Commission. She has worked with almost every department head in her 15 years with the county. She has her law degree and her MBA from USC. She is a professional, not a career Politician.

Obituaries Barbara Mount Hoffman 10/13/1923 – 4/29/2016

Barbara Mount Hoffman, 92, made her peaceful transition into Heaven on April 29 from a hospital close to her beloved Santa Ynez Valley, with family by her side.

Born Barbara Josephine Novara on Oct. 13, 1923 to parents Amilcar Eugene Novara and Jeanne Delsin, in New York, NY. “Sis,” as she was known to her family, followed her parents to the West Coast as a young girl to begin her life adventures in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Soon after World War II, in 1948, she married Tommy Mount and started a family in 1949. In the late 1970s, by the grace of God, she met and married Edward (Grandpa Eddie) Hoffman and lived the remainder of her life with him in Santa Ynez. They were both involved in the Lions Club and volunteered at the Santa Ynez thrift shop for many years.

Barb, aka Babs and Babbers, was preceded in death by her daughter Debi, her ex-husband and good friend Tommy, her beloved husband Edward, her son Jimmy, nephew Eugene and brothers Joe and Dutch. Though touched by more than her share of tragedy and pain, “Nana” survived with lots of smiles and laughter.

She is survived by her surrogate daughters Elysia “Lolli” (Michael) Hernandez, Ann (Bob) Brown, youngest son David (Cristina) Mount and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

We will all miss hearing her say, “I love you.” There are so many more stories that could be told about the best Mom, Nana and friend that we ever had.

Disposition was by burial in Carpinteria with no memorial service and a “Celebration of Life” will be held sometime in July of 2016 in California, with announcement forthcoming.

“Totus tuus” (all yours) Nana, forever.

Donna May Nunes 6/14/1938 - 5/27/2016

Donna May Nunes found eternal peace on May 27, 2016 while at home in Carpinteria where she has lived since 1977. She was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1938, and enjoyed her early childhood in Ventura with her mother and father, Rosa and John Taylor, her sister, Martha, and brother, Leroy. Her family soon moved to Santa Barbara, where Donna attended Harding School and La Cumbre Junior High and graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1956. During the summer of 1955 in the celebration of La Fiesta, Donna ventured on a blind date with a Hot Shot fire fighter named John T. Nunes, Jr., the man who would become the love of her life and her dedicated husband for over 59 years. On Dec. 1, 1956, Reverend Gammons joined them in marriage at El Montecito Presbyterian Church.

Though she worked primarily as a homemaker for her husband and three energetic children—John (Jay), Lisa, and Jennifer—Donna found time to work various jobs and do volunteer work, including at M. Fredric’s, The Pregill Agency, the office of John L. Warren, Robinson’s, and eventually as an antique dealer at The Cottage in Carpinteria and The Antique Mall on State Street. She served as a Girl Scout Den Mother, worked in the Little League Baseball snack bar, and edited the school newspapers for Cathedral Oaks Elementary School and Yucca Loma Elementary School.

Donna enjoyed beach and ocean activities in Santa Barbara. She often took her young children to play in the waves at Goleta Beach, and she loved to fish. Not only did she sometimes fish for surf perch from the beach with her husband, but she also had a commercial fishing license. She relished the trips to San Miguel Island in quest of her favorite catch, the “barber pole” fish. Donna’s hobbies included painting, knitting, cross stitch and antique collecting, and much of her cross stitch artwork adorns the walls of family members’ homes. She loved the simple beauty of the world around her, and she particularly liked pink. She took great joy

in seeing the colors of flowers and birds and in hearing the bright laughter of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She especially enjoyed visiting English gardens when she and her husband, John, journeyed to England to visit their youngest daughter, Jennifer, and two lovely granddaughters, Lily and India.

After her passing, Donna continues to live in the hearts and memories of the many family members who survive her: her loving and devoted husband, John; her sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Carl Schaffer, Phd. of Upland, Calif.; her brother Leroy of Buellton; her son, John T. Nunes, III, and his wife, Laura, of Apple Valley, Calif., and their two sons, John T. Nunes, IV (Apple Valley) and Samuel Taylor Nunes (Carpinteria); her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Ann Bryan and Joseph A. Bryan (Apple Valley), their sons Christopher Ian Bryan of Apple Valley and Trevor Benjamin Bryan of Sacramento, Christopher’s wife Tessa, and their children, Klayton, Kyler, and Coralyn; her daughter, Jennifer Rose Rodrigues of Poynings, England; Phillip Oakley of England; and Jennifer and Phillip’s daughters and son-in-law, Lily Anneva King and James Nicholas King, and India Rosa Oakley of Brighton, England; and her beloved dog Sparky.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 7 at 10 a.m. at the McDermott Crockett Chapel at 2020 Chapala St. in Santa Barbara, and a graveside service will follow at noon at the Carpinteria Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donna’s name to the Santa Barbara Humane Society.

Robert “Bob” Dan Morrison 4/16/1947 – 4/24/2016

Robert “Bob” Dan Morrison passed away on April 24, 2016 peacefully and surrounded by his family. He is survived by his children: Karen, Robert Jr., Rebecca and Daniel; grandchildren Daniel, Sarah and Vivian; sisters Evelyn, Al Josie and Author Marie; brothers Jay and Thomas.

Bob was born in Morgan City, La. on April 16, 1947. He moved to California in 1974 where he started his business Bob’s Body Shop in Carpinteria. He served Carpinteria for 35 years as a proud business owner. His other passion was music. No matter where he was his guitar was with him. His favorite music was gospel, jazz and blues. Of his many favorite songs, the two he enjoyed the most were “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong and the gospel song “May the Work I’ve Done Speak for me.” We will all miss Bob, our father our friend. He was well loved and liked by all.

Bob was laid to rest privately by his family in Carpinteria and his memorial service was held in his hometown Morgan City, La. The Morrison family would like to thank everyone who dedicated their time and help with our father this past year, and everyone who was a part of his life. Dad we will always miss you.

Until we see you again, guitar in hand.

John W. Soden 10/26/1918 – 5/22/2016

John Whitney Soden was born Oct. 26, 1918 on a farm in Shellsburg, Iowa. He passed away on May 22, 2016 in Santa Barbara. He was the youngest child of Fred and Iva Soden. His mother died when he was 16, and shortly thereafter his father lost the family farm during the depths of the Great Depression. John was sent to live with a sister, Marge, in Orange County, Calif. Working part time and attending high school part time, he graduated from Santa Ana High School in 1939 at the age of 20.

John married Lola Long in 1940; they had one son, David. They later divorced.

John served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He met Elsie (Beth) Edgar while enjoying their mutual love of ballroom dancing. They married on Oct. 2, 1942. They had three sons, John, Steve and Rick.

After the war, they settled in Inglewood where John began a long career in sales. In 1949, the family moved to Santa Ana and lived there until they moved to Carpinteria in 1961 and settled in their house at 1108 Linden Ave. During his working years in Carpinteria, John sold insurance, real estate and furniture at Kincaid’s in Santa Barbara. John and Beth were licensed massage therapists and worked at San Ysidro Ranch in the 1970’s.

He and Beth were active in the effort that led to the incorporation of the City of Carpinteria. John was also a moving force in the founding of the Carpinteria Toastmasters Club.

Sadly, Beth passed away in 1986 just as they were retiring and about to embark on long planned travel.

During his latter years John enjoyed the companionship of Berta Jones, her daughter Olga and granddaughters, Bianca and Francesca. He had a special relationship with Charlie, his chihuahua.

John is survived by his sons David of Crystal Lake, Ill., John of Waltham, Mass. and Rick of Lahaina, Hawaii; grandsons Stan and Andy of Crystal Lake, Ill., Cameron of Los Alamitos, Calif. and granddaughter Amanda of Portland, Ore., great-granddaughters Emma and Isabel of Crystal Lake, Ill.; and numerous nieces and a nephew. His son Steve predeceased him in 2015.

Anyone wishing to honor John’s memory is encouraged to make a donation to the Humane Society.

Skate park fundraiser focuses on art Carpinteria’s future contains a skate park. In the present, the Carpinteria Skate Foundation is working to raise funds to construct it.

To this end, a Skate Art Show, mixing pro skaters, pro artists, music and nosh, will be held on Friday, June 3 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Lucky Llama, 5100 Carpinteria Ave. The free event will host 50 local and international artists from the skate and surf industries including pro surfer Dane Reynolds, skaters JJ Wessels and Brian Bent. There will also be a silent auction, live music by AFishNSea, Beer from Island Brewing Co. and wine by Sarloos and Sons. All proceeds benefit the Carpinteria Skate Foundation, an all-volunteer non-profit organization whose mission is to bring a public skate park to Carpinteria.

Carpinteria Artist’s Marketplace The popular Carpinteria Artist’s Marketplace returns this weekend with the promise of unique art pieces handmade by locals. The event will be held on Saturday, June 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the courtyard of the Carpinteria Arts Center, 855 Linden Ave. The celebration of arts will feature music, free art activities for the family and many local artisans with their products. This month’s featured artist is tree sculptor Joe Sacks, whose Bonsai creations are unique pieces of living art. The band, Americana Cats, will provide music in the morning, and the ukulele band Harbor Ramblers will be performing in the afternoon.

Grown-up Show & Tell Remember when we hauled a treasured possession to school and told our classmates why we loved it so much? Well, now readers have the chance to share on a whole different level with Show & Tell for grown-ups on Saturday, June 4 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Carpinteria Library, 5141 Carpinteria Ave. The program will be hosted by Manon-the-Street Larry Nimmer and personal historian Marcia Orland.

June Gloom Fest Instead of letting the June gloom bring them down, Santa Claus Lane merchants choose to celebrate its annual arrival. This year’s June Gloom Fest takes place on Saturday, June 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Party hosts are Porch, Hummingbird, Rowan, Garden Market, ZeBird, A Frame Surf, Borellos’s Pizza and Padaro Grill. June Gloom sales will happen up and down the lane, while Hummingbird holds a trunk show and Porch hosts a full day of activities. The home and garden store will have live music by The Americana Cats and Soul, a calligraphy class taught by Joya Rose and a book signing with “Patina Home” authors Brooke and Steve Giametti. Additionally, Bon Fortune has teamed up with Porch to create a free Kinder-Garden Party, a magical garden where children ages 3 to 12 are invited to create nature-inspired arts and crafts. Santa Barbara artist Jeremy Harper will outline a mural for children to fill in and sun-baked stones embellished with natural items will be made, along with dream catchers and mobiles.

Cancer Survivors and Caregivers Luncheon Cancer survivors and their caregivers will be honored at a Relay for Life Carpinteria luncheon on Saturday, June 4 at 11 a.m. at Carpinteria High School, 4810 Foothill Road. The event commemorates the lives of Carpinteria residents who have survived cancer, while offering the hope of finding a cure. Luncheon guests will be treated to a cooking demonstration by a local nutritionist before sitting down together to dine. “The Cancer Survivors’ Luncheon is a fun opportunity to come together and celebrate life and hope while honoring the personal journey of cancer survivors,” said Sue Harrison, event organizer. “Every survivor is invited whether they were diagnosed today, yesterday, or 20 years ago.”

Relay For Life is an overnight community event bringing together teams of families, friends, churches, neighborhoods, and businesses— all with the same goal of curing cancer. This year the event will be held July 16 to 17 at Aliso School. Space at the Survivors’ Celebration Reception is limited to cancer survivors and their guests. Kids Benefit Dinner & Auction

The 32 nd Annual Kids Benefit Dinner and Auction will deliver its yearly dose of big fun on Saturday, June 4 beginning at 5 p.m. at the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club, 4849 Foothill Road. This year’s auction has a Mardi Gras theme and is titled “Unmask a Child’s Potential.”

New programs are blooming left and right at the Carpinteria Arts Center this spring. The nonprofit dedicated to promoting the arts locally has long paired gallery shows with lively art receptions and offered children’s classes during the SuuBMITTeD PHOTO summer, but this year, it Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This week, the center held a tour of Just Folk in Summerland. Gallery Director Deirdre Gerry was scheduled to tour the group through the Lillie Avenue gallery specializing in folk and outsider art. In July, there will be a special, in-depth tour at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, then a private tour of the LOFT in Santa Barbara in August, and one at the Los Angeles Weisman Art Collection in September.

Santa Barbara artist Kathi Scarminach is leading this charge to get local art enthusiasts further enthused by offering unique opportunities for art exposure. She brings years of experience as an art educator, a professional artist and now a student earning a masters in art history. Contemporary and modern arts are Scarminach’s area of expertise. “I’m excited about sharing that with people,” she said.

Scarminach hopes that the tours will catch on and demand may grow for long distance travel. She envisions future events such as overnights in San Francisco to take in the newly expanded SF Museum of Modern Art. Art center members have already joined other groups, such as the Carpinteria Valley Historical Society, in art tours to the Los Angeles area. Comfortable tour buses make the experience pleasant and possible for people who would not make the trek themselves. Groups have visited the Broad Museum and MOCA in LA and the Pacific Asian Museum in Pasadena. “Having people stand in front of that art and contemplate the value. That’s really fun for me,” said Scarminach.

the summerland shore f r a n d av i s I like to walk the loop trail around Summerland’s Ortega Hill. From the highest point, you can stand directly above the gash in the hillside that holds Highway 101. The view down at the fast moving stream of cars is dizzying. The roar bounces up, spills over, a metallic waterfall. Standing there not long ago, I could look straight across that fast running river of cars at the nests in the tall eucalyptus on the ocean side of the freeway.

In springtime those trees are a Brant’s cormorant rookery. Every spring the birds rebuild and repair their thatchy nests. They look like black andirons as they stand guard over their nests. I can’t help wondering why they chose those trees near the freeway exit to Summerland. Right beside the stream and its roar, the nestlings would be fanned by passing semis. Even after the young have flown, the cormorants roost among the empty nests. They’re communal birds and flock together.

Watching the birds not long ago, I saw spouts in the water beyond the trees. A pod of whales was hanging out in Shark’s Cove. They seemed to be circling, large and small spouts breaking from the ocean surface in steamy geysers. Mothers and babies, I assumed, on their leisurely way up from Baja to Alaska. I stood mesmerized until they finally headed out into the open waters of the channel, flashing blue and empty that day.

I thought of the debris mounds on the channel floor the whales would be swimming over. They were left by Chevron after they took down four oil platforms in the 1990s. The mounds are made of contaminated drill cutting and muds covered by shells—mussels, clams, barnacles. They’re 30 feet high and were never cleaned up and made “trawlable” to meet State Lands requirements, because moving them would release the contaminants. So they lie, hills in the underwater landscape, growing taller with new shell deposits. Ships and whales sail over them; reef fish poke through the shells.

I stood on the hilltop considering the interconnectedness in front of me—nature’s handiwork and man’s. The cars zooming by owed their acceleration to those mounds, our continuing thirst for oil. The birds went on being birds, selecting favorite trees, raising babies in the fumes of passing cars. The whales went on being whales, making their pilgrimage north, nursing their babies over toxic mounds.

We exist in close proximity to the wild, and we expect the wild to adapt to our ways and our pollution. We tend

to see nature as running alongside us, trying to keep up, like that stream of cars. Remarkably, nature does its best. In some ways we’re fortunate that the consequences of animals’ adaptation (or failure to adapt) are far enough down the line that we may not witness the outcomes.

Sometimes it’s uncomfortable to know too much—like the presence of those debris mounds out there growing taller, more impossible to clean up. Better to gaze out at the channel’s blue expanse and believe it’s as unblemished as it appears. Enjoy the lovely sparkle and ripple flowing clear out to the islands. But everything is connected—us in our cars, the birds and whales, water and land, nature and man. It’s probably a good thing to consider those connections from time to time. It might make us better humans and better stewards of this amazing planet.

Hearts and souls were transferred to paper and pottery over the course of the school year, and last week, students from throughout Carpinteria were recognized for their courageous creations at the awards ceremony for the annual Carpinteria Woman’s Club Art Contest. From artists just learning to hold a paintbrush to those with several years of training in their strokes, the contest honored kindergarten to 12th-grade students. The Carpinteria Arts Center hosted the event, collaborating with the Woman’s Club to promote budding artists in the community.

Averi Alexander of Carpinteria Family School won first place for her oil pastel and paper collage entitled “Lion King.”

Chloe Papke won this year’s top prize, the Senior Merit Award, for her outstanding work in ceramics.

Cate School completed its 103rd graduation ceremony on May 29 on the Cate Mesa.

Headmaster Ben Williams conferred diplomas upon the 72 members of the school’s Class of 2016, recognizing every student with a personally crafted description of each student’s contributions and talents. English teacher and author Brooks Hansen, who was chosen by the senior class to give the faculty address, spoke to the students about defining one’s self with a particular identity, noting “that these newly burnished and robust senses of identity becomes almost like suits of armor: they help protect us, sure, and they empower us, and they embolden us in a lot of important ways. But if we’re not careful, they might trap us, too.”

Senior Joel Serugo of North Hills, Calif., was selected by his classmates to give the student address. Alondra Torres-Navarro received the William Shepard Biddle Cup, which recognizes a senior who best demonstrates the qualities of humanism, idealism and the desire to achieve. Cate’s highest academic recognition, the Scholarship Cup, was awarded to Ryan Cain of Huntington Beach.

Longtime faculty member and Assistant Headmaster for External Affairs Meg Bradley received the Servons Award. Bradley was lauded for her deep optimism and energetic fundraising for the school during her 18-year tenure. She departs to head Santa Catalina School in Monterey.

Mavericks bball hits SD

All three Carpinteria Mavericks basketball teams traveled to San Diego over Memorial Day Weekend for the ARC Memorial Day Invitational Basketball tournament. The teams faired well at the 100-plus team tournament. The High School team tied for first in ITS pool, while the Middle School team battled hard over four games, and the newest team, the Mini-Mavericks, second and third grade, took home third place and a trophy. One weekend highlight was 75 players and family gathering together for a Sunday night dinner at the Old Town Mexican Café in Old Town San Diego.

CHS Boosters to hold last meeting of year

The Carpinteria High School Boosters Club will hold its final meeting of the school year on Monday, June 6 at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria. It’s the annual meeting of the members, where the election of the Vice President and Treasurer will take place. The next meeting will take place in August.

Warrior alumni fall in War on the Shore IV

Good fortune once again shined upon Carpinteria High School’s biggest rival Bishop Diego, as the Cardinals took advantage of a short punt with 5:36 remaining in the game to score the only touchdown to be had in the May 28 Carpinteria-Bishop Diego High School Alumni Football Game. The 7-0 Cardinal win made it three in a row in the War on the Shore series, which began in 1984.

With Gordy Hernandez (Class of 2001) starting at quarterback, Carpinteria picked up the game’s first first down on the Warriors’ own 42, courtesy of a pass interference call. The drive was shortlived, however, and three plays later John Bustillos (2010) was called in for his punting prowess, as he would be throughout the afternoon.

The Cardinals started their initial drive at their own 20 and immediately found some success through the air when quarterback Rich Donati (1992) connected with Vincent Figueroa (2011) for a gain of 32 yards and a first down inside Warrior territory. But a fumble helped stop the drive, and an Elijah Orosco (2008) punt gave the Warriors the ball at their own 22.

The Warriors rotated a variety of quarterbacks throughout the day, including Paul “Munchie” Aguilar (2011), Son Ngo (1993) and Ray Gonzales (1982) whose son Cameron was also on the squad from the class of 2010.

However, the game was all about the defense, and both teams laid on some heavy hits with yardage difficult to come by, particularly on the ground. “It’s tough not playing for a couple of years, coming out here, breaking the rust off,” said Warrior Justin Alvarado (2009) who ended up with two interceptions for the game.

Alvino Jacinto (2004) also came up with a third Warrior interception, while Gary Feramisco (1993) did a good job of clogging up the middle and Nick Razo (2010) shot the gaps, punishing Cardinal ball carriers from his linebacker position.

Late in the second quarter, Ray Gonzales found Santiago Coleman (1992) on a quick opener. Coleman broke tackles and eluded defenders, making his way deep into Cardinal territory. But a penalty turned the long gainer into just a fiveyard advance, and the Warriors were once again forced to punt.

Carpinteria’s best chance to get on the scoreboard came in the third quarter after a short punt put the Warriors on the Bishop 37-yard line. However, a Warrior fumble recovered by Figueroa ended the threat, and the game remained scoreless after three quarters.

With 10:49 left to play, Cardinal Larry Urzua (1993) sacked Aguilar back at the Carpinteria 10. An illegal forward pass put the ball even farther back at the six, and Bishop ended up with the ball on the Warrior 23 following a punt.

Donati’s pass over the middle to Orosco earned Bishop a first and goal at the 10.

On third and goal from the six, Orosco, taking a lateral from Donati, hooked up with Aaron Skinner (2008) at the back of the end zone to put the Cardinals up 7-0.

On the ensuing possession, Hernandez scrambled 11 yards for a first down and positioned the Warriors at the 42. But a deflected pass wound up in the hands of Cardinal defensive back Craig Kohler (2007) for an interception to help preserve the win.

For Warrior coach Rick Candaele it was more about the experience than who came out on top. “(The final score) didn’t diminish the game. I had two weeks with the guys; some of them I’ve never coached before,” said Candale. “I thought it was a great privilege for me to do that, I enjoyed every day.”

New faces join Girls Inc. board

Stefanie herrington was appointed recently as president of the Girls inc. of Carpinteria board of directors, which also grew by two members, micheline G. miglis and diane Wondolowski Herrington is a partner in the law firm of Bartlett & Herrington, P.C., in Carpinteria.

She assists clients with estate planning, trust administration and probate matters.

She joined the board of directors at Girls inc. in 2012 and has served as the event co-chair of the organization’s largest annual fundraiser, An evening in bloom, for three consecutive years. “i am committed to Girls inc. and its mission — inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold,” said herrington. “i believe in the power of altering a child’s future by showing her that the world is full of diverse opportunities and providing the support necessary to achieve success.”

Miglis was hired last summer as superintendent of the Carpinteria Unified School district. prior to that, she held various positions throughout California, including that of superintendent of the Plumas Unified School District and assistant superintendent of educational services at Silver Valley Unified School District. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish language and literature and a master’s degree in counseling psychology.

Wondolowski, a u.C. berkeley graduate, is Coo and CFo of the Santa barbara museum of Natural history. She became a CpA in San Francisco, and has since dedicated her skills to the volunteer boards of several organizations, including California Association of museums, CalCpA, California Association of Student Councils, the environmental defense Center, Friends of the Carpinteria Library and Save ellwood Shores.

members of Carpinteria Girl Scout Junior troop 50014 recently earned their bronze Award in Girl Scouts, the highest award girls can earn at the Junior level. the girls decided to honor Carpinterian Carmen medel, a tireless volunteer at St. Joseph Catholic Church who passed away at the end of 2015. in medel’s memory, the girls fixed up the garden attached to the church’s thrift shop, where Medel donated many hours, and made a restful spot for all the employees and customers who visit. the garden was dedicated to medel on may 22.

Chief of police updates Morning Rotary

mike perkins, chief of police services at the Carpinteria Substation of the Santa barbara County Sheriff’s department, updated the Rotary Club of Carpinteria morning on crime in Carpinteria at a recent meeting. perkins told the club that it is a pleasure to work in a small town like Carpinteria where crime rates are much lower than other parts of the county. he took questions about local concerns. one club member suggested that a bike rodeo be held so that cyclists and Carpinteria residents could learn more about biking protocol. Perkins described an intervention that officers called aggressive hospitality. To head off possible incidents, officers approach people who might need help or be potential problems and let their presence be known. he also told the club that using a landline when calling 9-1-1 will reach the dispatcher more quickly. Animal behavior expert meets 4-H students

playa del Sur 4-h members made a trip to the Granada theatre in Santa barbara on may 10 to see world renowned autism and animal behavior spokesperson temple Grandin share her insight about the way different people think and the humane treatment of livestock animals. Grandin, who is autistic, is a professor of Animal Science at Colorado State university. According to 4-h member Karla marin, Grandin taught the audience that, “there need to be more hands on activities taught in school.” She concluded her presentation by saying that programs such as 4-h are highly important, and she was a 4-h member as a young woman.

Carpinteria Unified School District By way of this Request for Qualifications/Request for Proposal (“RFQ/RFP”), the Carpinteria Unified School District (“District”) seeks to obtain proposals from a limited number of qualified firms (each, a “Consultant”) to provide CEQA Consulting services for the District Bond Projects and for other projects that from time to time may be requested.

The purpose of this RFQ/RFP is to obtain information that will enable the District to select a consultant that is well acquainted with all applicable CEQA laws and regulations and knowledgeable as to relevant issues and solutions, especially as they apply to the District facilities projects, and be capable of providing work product that will enable the District to strictly comply with all applicable requirements. Consultants responding to this RFQ/ RFP should be prepared and equipped to provide service to the District in an expeditious and timely manner so as to enable the District to meet critical time deadlines and schedules.

If your firm is interested in responding, please submit a detailed summary of your firm’s qualifications and other requested information in accordance with this RFQ/RFP. The deadline for receipt of all materials responsive to this RFQ/RFP is June 21, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. (the “Response Deadline”). Responses delivered after the Response Deadline may not be considered. The proposals may be mailed or delivered in person during normal business hours, which are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Delivery of proposals is the sole responsibility of the Consultant. All proposals must be signed and become the property of the District.

“On the Beach”

What would you do if you knew the end of the world, or human existence, were a matter of weeks away? Reading this novel after having just finished the new book “Station Eleven” (see Book Club pick) made for a very interesting juxtaposition. Published in 1957 during the height of the Cold War, “On the Beach” details the experiences of several people in Melbourne, Australia as they await the arrival of deadly radiation spreading towards them from the Northern Hemisphere following a nuclear World War III that raged briefly a year previously. Although at times culturally dated (silly housewives and old men wiling their days way at the country club), much of it still resonates.

As the radiation approaches, daily life is altered inexorably and each person deals with impending death differently. Though apocalyptic in nature, at its core, this is anti-war or, at least anti-nuclear war.

What makes the story still relevant and compelling today is how little the global political climate has changed during the ensuing 60 years.

the write practice joe bunting Good books, good stories, are about problems not solutions.

This is something I tell my students, my writing clients, my contributors on The Write Practice. I say this again and again because people rarely realize it.

You think stories are about solutions, about things going right for your character, but the reality is great stories are filled with things going wrong: a parent dies, a crush delivers a rejection, a friend picks a fight, an enemy returns.

If you really look at the stories you love most, you’ll probably find that 80 to 90 out of each 100 pages are filled with problems. Only 10 or 20 of every 100 pages is filled with solutions.

You think nonfiction is supposed to be about solutions to life’s problems.

But great nonfiction writers—and especially great copywriters—know the best way to get people to pay attention to the solution is by describing the problem in excruciating detail.

So writers, stop being so easy on your characters. Instead, follow the century old advice: In the first act, get your principal character up a tree; in the second act, throw stones at him; in the third, get him down gracefully.

Problems are your job

This is your discipline as a writer.

Be a collector of stones. Learn how to aim them well.

When you’re feeling like you want to rescue your character, to keep him or her comfortable, instead, do the opposite. Make your character’s discomfort feel like a blessing compared to the pain he or she is about to experience.

Now, go get throwing.

Birding goes to the beach

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham It appeared as if the tiny, quarter-sized chick would need many weeks before it would grow into its long, spindly legs and huge feet. The fuzzy western snowy plover fledgling was just days removed from its cracked open speckled egg, and already it was busy running down squadrons of kelp flies, vibrant beach hoppers and other tasty delights along the ragged wrackline of rotting, tattered kelp and bleached driftwood before it high-tailed it back to the waiting wings of its protective parent hunkered down in a gritty depression on windswept Ormond Beach in Oxnard.

If you’re looking to pad your birding life list don’t forget your bird book, camera, binoculars and/or spotting scope and head to Ormond Beach and adjacent wetlands located between the Point Mugu Naval Base and the coastal town of Port Hueneme. The two-milelong stretch of windswept beach is one of the few remaining beaches in southern California with an intact system of neatly groomed coastal dunes, transition zones and adjoining marshlands. Its large size and array of habitats make it ideal for more than 240 bird species documented across the Ormond Beach region.

More shorebirds use Ormond Beach than any other stretch of beach in Ventura County. Besides the western snowy plover, common beachcombers include American avocet, black-necked stilt, whimbrel, marbled godwit, willet and long-billed curlew. A few of the other notable birds sighted throughout the region include the predatory loggerhead shrike, semipalmated plover, California least tern, the migratory surf scoter, the majestic great-horned owl, Allen’s hummingbird, the striking common yellowthroat, least Bell’s vireo and the opportunistic belted kingfisher.

Following decades of degradation, the adjacent Ormond Wetlands is currently being restored, a massive project that the California State Coastal Conservancy has said is “at a scale unprecedented” within the state. Once the project is finished,

The only thing separating the two is the rusty, weather-beaten fence that extends into the pounding surf on a big high tide telling beach-walkers to stay out of the U.S. Navy site.

Trails leading through the wetlands are open year-round, offering excellent views of songbirds, shorebirds, raptors and the vast wetland and Pacific beyond. The Nature Conservancy is currently offering free guided hikes at Ormond Beach and its adjacent wetlands.

Longtime birder, naturalist, educator and guide Amy Davis leads visitors through the wetlands and out to the beach. A keen birder, Davis has over an impressive 600 species on her birding life list.

Directions From Highway 1, exit onto E. Hueneme Road, go west 2.4 miles to Arnold Road, and turn left. Drive 1.9 miles and park at the end of the road. Or remain on E. Hueneme Road, and turn left, then right on E. McWane Blvd and park near the gate.

Tips Bring a hat, sunglasses, water, a spotting scope, camera, binoculars and a birding book. The terrain is mostly flat and the walking moderate. Wear a good

pair of hiking shoes. Parts of Ormond Beach are currently roped off to protect nesting western snowy plovers and California least terns, both federally protected species.

Davis grad goes to Europe

On May 11, Candi Burquez and Jeanne Kelsey flew to Dublin, Ireland to meet up with Jeanne’s daughter, Zoe Kelsey, and friend Alex Reardon for a week-long adventure. Zoe had just graduated from U.C. Davis in March, so she and Reardon went on a seven-week European adventure, visiting 18 different countries. They decided on an eighth week in Ireland, so Candi and Jeanne met them there. They snapped the photo at amazing Dromoland Castle in Ennis where they stayed for a night. They also stayed in Galway, Cork and Kilkenny. “It was an amazing trip with the best weather Ireland had seen in over a year,” commented the travelers.
