Council approves new vehicle chargers, parking and raises

Dynamic duo needs online votes to win dream wedding

Matt Organista and Sarah Skipper have speed, agility, stamina and athleticism in spades, but they don’t have much money for a big wedding and the start of a married life together. That’s where they’re hoping Fiverr.com will come in.

The Carpinteria couple recently entered an online video contest through Fiverr.com where they told their story in 1 minute for a chance at winning $25,000.

And now what they need is everyone reading this article and seeing their social media posts to vote for their video so their happily-ever-after can begin with a wonderful wedding and a 200-squarefoot tiny house on wheels.

Organista, a native Carpinterian and professional triathlete, met Skipper, a North Dakotan who transplanted herself to Santa Barbara to pursue dreams of becoming national heptathlon competitor, during a workout on the Westmont College track a few years ago. A friendship born of common goals and lifestyles blossomed into a romance and an engagement. The couple plans to wed on Oct. 2.

Both Organist and Skipper juggle several jobs—him coaching Carpinteria youth aquatics programs and training fitness-seeking adults, her nannying and coaching track and field—that allow them enough time to train six days a week multiple times a day.

The athletic couple is preparing for a minimalist future. They don’t need much space, and they’re willing to compromise on luxuries in order to keep doing what they love. To that end, they purchased blueprints for a “tiny house,” a 200-square-foot abode on wheels that they’ll construct themselves after the wedding. Plans for the off-grid home include power generated by stationary bike and solar panels, and an atmospheric water generator. Organista and Skipper’s Home Depot wedding registry includes the tools and materials they need to build their tiny home, and they’re looking for a spot to park it.

A dream wedding and a tiny house aren’t both within reach, so the couple hopes a $25,000 fiverr.com win will pave the way for steps one and two. Organista, who counts videography among his talents, made the simple and sweet clip that has thus far garnered over 1,000 votes toward the prize purse. The video can be viewed and voted on through his own website mattheworganista.com.

By the end of the month, Carpinteria will become a more welcoming place for electric vehicles. The City Council voted on June 27 to approve the installation of three new free, dual-port charging stations in local parking lots as a component of the Central Coast Charge Ahead Program. The city’s existing five connections will double when the new units are put in place at city hall, the city parking lot on Cactus Lane and the Amtrak lot.

Electric vehicles can only travel 80 to 200 miles on a single charge. The grantfunded Charge Ahead program aims to increase the number of charging stations in destinations that attract people traveling far enough from home to require a charge. Customers plug in for a cost of 30 cents per kilowatt hour.

Because downtown parking is limited and adding more EV charging stations means taking away regular parking spots, members of the council inquired as to the amount of use existing EV stations receive. Public Works Director Charlie Ebeling said, “They are very frequently used,” and noted that the units collect data on usage for analysis.

Cravens Lane parking

A 2013 council decision to remove red curbs and allow 18 additional street parking spaces along the west side of Cravens Lane was superseded by the council this week. Residents of nearby condominium complex The Villas of Carpinteria had implored the council to reconsider, citing the potential for reduced traffic safety and other negative impacts.

Councilman Brad Stein motioned to overturn the council’s three-year-old parking decision, noting that very seldom does the governing body go against rec-

ommendations of public works and the traffic safety committee, but in this case the residents there “are the experts.”

DIF update

Willdan Financial Services got the council’s green light to consult with the city on an update of Development Impact Fees for $52,600. DIFs are collected from developers to fund public improvement projects such as roads and parks needed to serve new development. The city’s existing DIFs were established in 2003.

Councilman Fred Shaw said he was pleased to see that Willdan’s proposal included significant public involvement in the fee development process.

City pay raises, Local Coastal Plan and sidewalks

The city’s non-union fulltime employees will receive a pay raise of 1.3 percent as of July 1. The council approved the salary adjustment based on an inflationary index from March 2015 to March 2016.

Union members received the same salary increase per negotiations.

First approved in 2014, the city’s Local Coastal Program amendments were granted final approval by the council this week after being modified and approved by the California Coastal Commission.

Councilmembers commented on the added consistency of the amended program and its improved, easy-to-read maps.

The council also approved Berry General Engineering’s $142,600 bid for the Main School Sidewalk Improvements project. Sidewalks and curb ramps will be constructed on the 6th Street and Walnut Avenue sides of the campus.

Relay for Life needs you

Relay for Life of Carpinteria is only 16 days away, and the all-night gathering in support of the fight against cancer can still use helpers. The Friday and Saturday, July 16 and 17, event at Aliso School, 4545 Carpinteria Ave., kicks off at 10 a.m. and serves to honor those affected by cancer and fundraise for the American Cancer Society.

Filled with remembrance ceremonies, fun activities and live music, the event draws hundreds of participants. Lions to host blood drive

Movies in the Park announces films

Summer’s here, and that means Carpinteria Movies in the Park is gearing up to screen six weekly films under the stars at Linden Field. This year’s event kicks off on Thursday, July 7 with a screening of “Pan,” the 2015 live action prequel to “Peter Pan.” Through Aug. 11, movies will be shown every Thursday beginning just after sundown, which takes place at 8:15 p.m. on July 7. Following “Pan” will be “Labyrinth,” “Zootopia,” “The Good Dinosaur,” “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and “Aladdin.” Films are free, but organizers pass a hat for donations prior to the screening and are still seeking sponsors to finish funding the summer run. Bowing out

Upon my retirement on July 1, I wish to thank all of the customers of the Carpinteria Valley Water District for the privilege and honor of serving as your General Manager for 21 years. We’ve been through a lot together. The current drought continues to weigh heavily on the district and all of us. Thank you to all of you who have so effectively embraced new ways of using water more efficiently to help the district manage its weather constricted water supplies without having to declare a shortage that would require rationing or other drastic measures.

Brought up with Boy Scout ethics, I strive to the best of my ability to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent in all that I do. I hope it showed. Looking forward to keeping in touch!

City should go greener

The City of Carpinteria has made great strides toward reducing the amount of plastic bags that are distributed in stores and should feel proud to have taken this first step. Perhaps other cities have used us as a model. But we cannot stop there.

To push the idea further, how about a ban on plastic straws? Or at least serve plastic straws upon request only. Next, what about the little plastic condiment containers, such as those used for salsa?

Perhaps the most difficult will be to reduce plastic lids on coffee cups. But it may only seem difficult because we have become so used to having them. This is the inertia that prevents change.

Finally, while some restaurants have moved away from plastic to-go containers, many still use plastic and Styrofoam.

Getting food to go is perhaps the most wasteful way that we consume plastic and other materials. This may be a cultural and health department taboo, but taboos should be challenged: bring your own to-go containers!

Let us push things just a bit further and not settle for only a “plastic bag ban,” but let us lead the charge toward reducing the wide consumption of plastic in Carpinteria.

Gun control not the answer

I appreciated the letter about gun control by Samuel Truax (“Mass shootings demand mass gun control,” CVN June 23) as it reminded me of over 25,000 gun control laws in America. death row/administrative segregation and then to the women’s facility, also a maximum security prison, I disagree with Truax. I was also a licensed gun dealer for 20 years.

I have spoken to criminals on the street and in prison, some serving multiple life sentences for murder, some on death row. I learned they don’t care about gun laws. Criminals do not obey laws. How about banning firearms? How did prohibition turn out?

Truax points out the shooter was allowed to buy an assault rifle and other weapons without a background check. This is a lie. The Orlando shooter was on the terror watch list and was investigated by the FBI twice, then taken off the list. He bought the rifle and a handgun after passing a background check.

What law would Truax recommend to have stopped the Orlando, Riverside or Newtown shootings? The Senate voted on four laws to stop killings in America. Yet none would have stopped any of the massacres above. Ban weapons you say. Suppose firearms in America were turned in for destruction. Safe now? Does anyone believe we would be safer? From my experience, criminals won’t turn in their firearms.

We don’t need more gun control. We need more criminal control. “We have a President who just released 1,000 convicted felons, one of whom immediately murdered a woman and her two children. Is that what we want, more criminals roaming the streets?

Furthermore, both weapons used in the attack were purchased legally in the state of Florida, including required background checks.

Claim: 2015 gun reform Senate legislation would have prevented the Orlando shooting because “the legislation included not selling weapons to persons on terror watch lists.” Actuality: Orlando shooter was on a terror watch list in years prior but was removed after being investigated. Therefore, even had said legislation passed, it wouldn’t have prevented the acquisition of the firearms that were used.

Samuel also calls for “banning the AR15 assault rifle.” This is illogical because an AR-15 was not used in the Orlando shooting (nor is it over-represented in mass shootings) and inaccurate because, like the MCX, the AR-15 is semi-automatic and incapable of automatic fire and therefore not an assault rifle. “AR” stands for “ArmaLite rifle” not “assault rifle.”

More importantly, mass gun control proposals as the means to the desired ends are an effort in futile symptomatic treatment. I propose, instead, identifying and treating the underlying cause(s) of this societal disease.

In response to Samuel Truax’s letter titled “Mass shootings demand mass gun control” (CVN, June 23), I cannot agree more with the desired goal of reducing senseless loss of innocent human life such as transpired in the recent Orlando shooting. However, Truax’s letter contains numerous illogicalities and inaccuracies that do disservice to these ends.

Claim: Orlando shooter “was allowed to buy an assault rifle ... without a background check.” Actuality: weapons used were an MCX semi-automatic Sig Sauer rifle and a Glock 17 semi-automat-

run? There are arguments to support both a “yes” and “no” response to the question. One thing is clear: The British voters have clearly said, “Enough!”

I have conservative views, but I have voted for liberal candidates in the past. I try to grasp the sincerity and genuineness of individual candidates, fully realizing that any candidate will not be the perfect one for me. Regardless of your political views, I encourage voters to think about what happened in the United King-

dom. Then give serious thought to the question, “Have we had enough of the existing political scene here in the U.S.?”

In his typical arrogant style, President Obama told the British people that it would be a terrible idea to exit the European Union. Wisely or not, the Brits ignored his “back of the queue” quasithreat. Personally, I’ve had enough of Obama and his liberal views and policies that assume a general dumbness among Americans. I don’t think this overall dumbness exists, and I hope all serious American voters, if they haven’t already done so, will examine the last eight years and decide if they want another term of Obama’s policies, as promised by Hillary Clinton. We live in the U.S. and I certainly respect decisions that differ from mine, but I say, “Enough!”

And yes, I have said enough to conservative legislators who simply haven’t done the job they were elected to do. While I do believe liberal policies are damaging to our country, conservative representatives are not exempt from blame. All politicians need to appreciate differing views and work to create an atmosphere of respect and cooperation.

To my British friends, I admire your grit! I hope we follow your gutsy example and tell our present leaders, “Enough!”

CVN scores with power soccer story

Congratulations to Coastal View News for doing the great article on wheelchair soccer (“Wheelchair soccer empowers,” June 23). Many people are not aware of this important sport. I have been aware and have gone to several games the past several years since my granddaughter, Genevieve Werner, is a key player on the team.

Her sisters and aunts have played soccer since they were 5 years old and some are still playing, but Genevieve could only watch. Because of this program, she is now very active and empowered to achieve her goal of playing soccer.

Genevieve, 16, has never walked but has mastered her power wheelchair and enjoys the challenge of the active sport.

Pass the word on so other wheelchairbound people can surpass their handicap and excel.

William Nels Lindwall 2/25/1946 - 6/25/2016

William Nels Lindwall passed away on June 25, 2016 with his family by his side after a courageous, one-year battle with cancer.

Born Feb. 25, 1946 in Santa Barbara, Ca-

lif., Bill graduated from Carpinteria High School in 1965 and enlisted in the Army in September 1965. Bill was a Vietnam Veteran proudly serving in The Big Red One, with an honorable discharge in 1968.

Bill spent his working career on the water; from there he found his home with Foss Maritime which he retired from in 2010.

Bill is survived by his wife Frances Lynn Lindwall, his brother Peter (Bobbi) of Napa, nephews Charley Lindwall of Napa, Troy Lindwall of San Luis Obispo, stepdaughter Lisa Lloyd of Ventura, grandsons Neal Hunter of Spokane, Wash., Trevon Hunter of Ventura, Calif. and great-grandson Ayden Barber of Spokane, Wash.

December morning walk

One of my favorite places: lions Club Park

It was a stunning morning along the ocean bluffs, the night’s fog lingering in the crevices between the eucalyptus trees. A light breeze pulled at wisps of my ponytail as the clouds from the previous day’s rainstorm were pushed back towards the mountains. The kind of winter day that causes our friends in colder climes Facebook envy with every beautiful beach pic posted, while they shovel snow from their driveways and scrape ice from their windshields.

Walking toward the seal rookery, I paused for a moment and turned around to take in the view. Right in front of me was a spectacular rainbow, diving straight and deep into the ocean. I watched it for a moment, as the clouds shifted, and then just as quickly as it appeared I watched the brilliant colors fade into nothing more than shadows.

Headed back toward Linden, I saw a large black bird sitting at the top of the long-dead tree on the edge of the ocean bluff; dark silhouettes against early morning light. At first I thought it was just a turkey vulture, common, though unusual so close to the ocean. Suddenly, the bird flew up in front of me and I saw under its wild wings was a spread of white, it was a California condor.

Breathless with the treasures this magical place I call home had offered up to me within the space of a single half hour, I headed into my day with a renewed understanding of the meaning of true wealth.

In 1997, Zoe Iverson and I became happily engaged. The planning for our wedding began immediately. Foremost on our checklist was where we would hold it. At the time, Zoe lived on Toro Canyon Road and I lived on Casitas Pass.

A location anywhere from Carpinteria to Santa Barbara was a possibility. Although I already had my ideal site in mind, I held my breath and asked Zoe what was hers. Her choice? The Lions Club Park on Highway 192. Same as mine.

Not only is the two-acre parcel with its many sycamore trees gorgeous in itself, but it’s had that handsome cedar lodge on site since the mid 1990s thanks to forward-thinking Lions Club members.

The lodge and woodsy setting puts me in mind of visiting Sequoia or Yosemite national parks. It’s transporting. A kind of instant Camp Curry.

At our wedding, late afternoon on Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, we had 100 family members and friends at the park as Zoe and I were married outdoors in front of the twin sycamores near the lodge.

Besides sharing the ceremony with the guests, it was our real joy to share the beauty of Lions Club Park with those from out of town. I hope they, too, marveled at its charm and serenity.

After the ceremony, all of us went inside the cedar lodge for a buffet dinner.

Toasts were begun. Jokes made. Memories recalled. Although our fathers had passed away, Zoe and I were still able to share the occasion with our mothers.

All our family and dear friends with us in Lions Club Park. Every time I drive by it, I think of that happy day in one of my favorite Carpinteria locations.

Island Brew turns 15

Island Brewing Company will celebrate its 15th Anniversary with a weekend of scheduled frivolity and a new Anniversary Beer release between Friday, July 8 and Sunday, July 10. Over the 15 years since owner and founder Paul Wright made the leap from homebrewer to brewmaster, IBC has become a fixture in the fabric of Carpinteria.

“It takes a village to raise a brewery,” said Wright of the journey. “We love being part IBC 15-year celebration of this community and brewing beer for this community.”

IBC opened its expanded tasting room and patio in 2015, and work is underway to finish the additional restrooms. “It’s been a long haul, but the future is looking good,” Wright said. “It’s been great to be able to work with my daughter Laurie Matthews and her husband, Mark, on a daily basis. Ryan Morrill is heading up our brewing team with some great beer. We’ve got a solid sales and delivery team, and the beertenders in the tasting room are doing a top notch job.”

School Board opts out of new TK program

Over 20 families of 4-year-olds had a Carpinteria Unified School District rug yanked out from under them following a school board decision on June 28. The school district had begun accepting enrollment applications for an expanded Transitional Kindergarten program that would have included 4-year-olds turning 5 in the upcoming school year, but the decision stopped the program before it started.

TK, as created in 2010 by state law, had been for students turning 5 between Sept. 2 and dec. 2 of a school year. A 2016 update to the education code gave local districts authority to begin accepting any student turning 5 within a school year with parent consent and assessment.

CUSd had made families aware of the new public school option through community outreach, and 22 newly eligible families had applied for the Canalino School based TK program, along with a handful of families at Aliso. The high demand for the program would have necessitated hiring a new teacher, which triggered the school board vote against allowing the younger students in due to budget constraints, according to Superintendent Micheline Miglis. TK will still be available for students turning 5 between Sept. 2 and dec. 2.

How to Live with Compassion and Courage

A free immersive online retreat entitled The Heart of the Matter, How to Live with Compassion and Courage will be held on Wednesdays through October at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club, 1059 Vallecito Road. A reader sends a halo to the quick action of those putting out the Bates Road fire just off the 101 on June 22—two local residents with shovels throwing dirt, a mailman and a UPS driver.

business and residence made thieves a total of $14,000 cash. The crimes were unrelated other than the large amounts of cash in each heist.

Deputies responded to an alarm at a Carpinteria Avenue restaurant at around 2 a.m. on June 17. They found the backdoor pried open but nobody in the business. When the owner arrived to take inventory, he told officers the thief knew exactly what he/she was doing.

The backdoor accessed an office and nothing appeared disturbed. Whoever done it zeroed in on the cash drawer and removed $5,000 dollars before slipping away into the night. There were no suspects mentioned in the report.

A Carpinteria Avenue resident similarly reported that her cash drawer had been looted. She had been traveling and had contract crews working on a damaged balcony at her residence, but sometime between March and June somebody allegedly swiped $9,000 cash. A construction crew had had open access to the home and a hidden spare key over the monthslong period in which the cash could have been taken. The woman hadn’t looked in her bedside cash drawer often so formulating a theory of when the money was stolen and who did it how was difficult.

Uber forgetful

An Uber driver reported on June 18 that Carpinteria passengers headed for a Casitas Pass Road drop-off forgot a backpack when they exited the vehicle.

Officers accepted the lost property and unzipped the bag to check its contents.

Mostly it contained dirty clothes and trash but inside a shaving kit officers discovered a bindle of a powdery substance suspected to be illegal drugs. Officers decided to destroy the illegal and lost possessions rather than to track and bait their owners.

Deputies attempting to track down a man causing a disturbance on Azalea Drive were led on a fence-hopping chase, but the nimble and quick 23-year-old reportedly came up lame after a bad landing. Officer received a call about stuff being thrown around at a residence and the address was familiar and a possible home of a man wanted on a felony warrant. When officers pulled up, he was walking toward the sidewalk. The lawmen instructed him to stop, but the man, who had been known to run away, bolted into the home and out the backdoor.

Officers then circled the neighborhood hoping to cut off points at which the man could escape from the back-to-back houses. Officer were able to track the man’s bobbing head over fences to Manzanita Street and observed that he’d slowed to a limp. Eventually, a neighborhood resident reported that the man had settled into his yard. Officers caught the man on Manzanita Street and had him medically cleared before transporting him to jail for resisting arrests and warrant for drugs and weapons violations.

Arts Center preps for Yarn Blast installation

Over 150 people have so far been involved in preparation for the Carpinteria Arts Center’s upcoming Yarn Blast, an installation of hundreds of yarn pompoms and flowers to add an unconventional splash of color to the center. The yarn art will get strung up from structures around the Arts Center, 855 Linden Ave., during installation on Sunday, July 10, and volunteers are needed to bring the community project to completion. Organizers are asking that ladders be delivered to the Arts Center on Saturday, July 9. Then 20 volunteers are needed between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on installation day. Shift 1 needs four people from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.; Shift 2 needs six from 10 a.m. to noon; Shift 3 needs six from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and Shift 4 needs four people from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. At the installation, large knitted panels will be attached to the poles and pompom streamers and more will be strung on the sails. There will then be a grand opening for the exhibit on Saturday, July 16 from 1 to 3 p.m.

GARDEN GOSSIP CHRIS & LISA CULLEN Summer’s here, kids are out of school and there’s so much to do. Who has time for gardening? And yet, when the graduation parties are over and the kids are home, gardening projects are a great way to get the kids (or grandkids) involved and interested in the subject of gardening.

When I was little, I loved conducting my own experiments, for example there was the one with tomatoes and tomato worms (don’t ask, it was a gruesome awakening to the laws of nature). I have noticed that when my young nieces and nephews come to visit, they love being in the garden, exploring, picking flowers and discovering the tiny inhabitants living there. If you get children out in the garden when they are young, they will likely carry the love of gardening with them their entire lives.

Gardening projects for kids

There are loads of fun gardening projects for kids. I remember a property we redesigned a number of years ago that had raised beds for the kids so they could plant their own choice of plants. This place was a wonderland of flowers and kid-friendly produce. Kids love to watch things grow. So plant from seed, there is nothing more exciting than seeing seeds germinate and grow into something you can eat. And it’s a great way to get kids to eat their veggies.

My little niece and nephew can’t get enough flowers—perhaps all kids are that way. If you have a flower-lover in your family, encourage them to plant their own cutting-flower garden. Sunflowers, marigolds, calendula, hollyhocks, zinnias and alyssum are great choices for a

kids cutting garden, they grow quickly and reseed themselves for many years of enjoyment in the future. At the end of the season show them how to collect the seeds and plant them next season. What could be more fun than that?

Here’s another project for the young ones. They can build their own summer “club house” by creating a tepee out of tree stakes or bamboo. Then plant the perimeter with beans, morning glory or perhaps thunbergia alata (black-eyed susan vine). Plant from seed or starts and watch it come to life, literally. They might even let you join them for a cup of tea if you are lucky.

Everyone loves to pick fresh berries, right? The easiest berries to plant and grow are strawberries. They are available this time of year in bare-root form or, of course, in pony packs and kids love them. You can allocate a raised bed to strawberries or put them in pots. Be sure to give them full sun. One thing extra gratifying about planting strawberries is that they start pumping out those sweet juicy morsels of goodness in a week or so.

I imagine the smaller members of your family running out to the strawberry patch each morning to see what they can pick for their morning cereal.

Last week I had a visit from a 5-monthold boy named Eli who happened by (with his grandmother) when I was out in the garden. We introduced Eli to the chickens and toured him through the veggie garden showing him flowers, beans, cucumbers, squash and all the rest that was growing there. He seemed to enjoy himself. I’m hoping he’ll come back when he’s old enough to hold a trowel so we can have real garden adventures.

What to do in your garden in July After a very cool spring, we’ve gotten into some hot weather. Ensure your garden is well-mulched. Pile it on 6 inches thick between the plants (not on them of course) to preserve moisture and bring life.

Continuous plantings of your favorite vegetables will ensure harvest well into the fall. This is the best time to plant the warm season veggies like tomatoes and peppers.

Continue to dead-head roses and other flowering perennials. Give them a layer of compost and compost tea for a mid-summer boost.

If the fog continues this summer, watch for mildew and wash off plants with soapy water to combat mildew and bugs. When the sun comes out, the mildew will go away. Don’t worry about it now and don’t use fungicides, they will not make the fog go away!

Pots of ivy geranium in your favorite shades will give your garden that festive pop of color and is an easy way to liven up your patio for summer parties.

CHS witnesses top athletes at Decathlon/Heptathlon

BY ALONZO OROZCO The Santa Barbara Track Club/Carpinteria High School heptathlon and decathlon on June 24 and 25 grouped together possibly the best athletes ever to lap the rubber track surface at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium. The event was an Olympic Trials qualifier, decathlon for men and heptathlon for women, but none of the athletes involved earned entry to the Olympic Trial set for July 2 and 3 in Eugene, Ore. Participating athletes Barbara Nwaba and Lindsey Lettow had already qualified for the trials and used the Carpinteria meet as a tune up.

For others, it was a chance to compete in their first heptathlon and decathlon, as the schedule included a novice competition in which boys and girls from both Carpinteria and Oxnard entered. Both fields included some of the finest young athletes in the world.

Carpinteria High School Track Assistant Coach Sarah Skipper, a member of Santa Barbara Track Club, participated in the heptathlon but was hampered with a hamstring injury so she competed in only the first day.

SBTC’s Chari Hawkins won the heptathlon with 5,872 points, and Annie Kunz of Texas A&M came in second with 4,848 points.

SBTC’s Tom Hopkins, the Princeton University record holder in the 400 meters, wowed the audience with a series

of successful attempts in the high jump competition. His scissor-styled approach put him over the bar on five different occasions, clearing over 1.82 meters, just short of six-feet. Hopkins, this time using the more popular Fosbury Flop technique, was unable to clear 1.85 meters in his three tries. Hopkins finished in first place overall with 7,485 points, winning the 100 meters with a time of 10.89 seconds and the long jump at 24 feet, 4 inches.

Japheth Cato, the Big 10 record holder in the indoor heptathlon from the University of Wisconsin, tied for first in the high jump with Ventura College’s Ben Kirkwood, both clearing 2.06 meters (a little more than six-feet, seven inches).

Cato finished second overall with 7,448 points.

The Warrior duo of Chance Wright and Daniel Burquez finished one and two in the novice decathlon 400M with Pacifica’s Andres Juarez taking third in the field of three. Wright set the CHS record for decathlon with 4,336 points, 10th overall in the competition of 15 athletes.

Fellow Warrior Daniel Burquez finished 11th with 3,851 points.

The Decathlon Pole Vault also proved competitive, as Cato dueled against AllBig 12 entrant from Baylor, Henry Vildosola. Cato out jumped Vildosola with a

“It’s quite something to see someone vault 17 feet,” commented Warrior track coach Van Latham.

The Novice Heptathlon and Decathlon Javelin had entrants from both high schools with Sandra Harness and Karen Reyes representing the Pacific Coast Training Club out of Pacifica High School in the latter event. “Many of them (the high school participants) probably didn’t know about a heptathlon/decathlon event three months ago. It opens up a whole new world for them in terms of something they can do,” said Priester.

Harness topped the girls division with 3,076 points.

All-Comers meet

In between the heptathlon/decathlon events, the first All-Comers Meet of the summer began the morning on Saturday with former Oklahoma University star, Irish-born Colin Quirke putting on quite a show in the discus throw, hurling the weighted ring past the brink of the roped-off venue. “He wanted three more tries in the decathlon, trying to hit a standard for Ireland to represent Ireland in the (Olympics),” said Josh Priester, Executive Director and Head Coach of the SBTC. “He didn’t quite do it, but he threw well,” explained Priester whose Westmont College Youth Track Club recently expanded to Carpinteria with Burquez and Wright representing the organization over the weekend.

Museum hosts summer sale

Kevin McLernon’s vintage wind chimes add a silvery song to the marketplace atmosphere.

Carpinteria Valley Museum of History was the place to be last Saturday morning when dozens of sellers and droves of buyers connected on the museum grounds. Everything from wind chimes to whacky hats changed hands at the all-day marketplace that benefits the museum and its history-preserving mission.
