County report shows avocado industry dip

Avocado prices experienced a drastic reduction in 2015 along with a slight decrease in production from the 2014 numbers, according to a report recently released by Santa Barbara County Agricultural Commissioners Officer. The total value of the county avocado 2015 crop dropped $13 million from 2014, which has led to avocados now slipping from seventh to the ninth most valuable commodity in the Santa Barbara County at $46.9 million. Growers reduced the number of acres in production by “stumping” trees due to the drought. Along with the drop in volume, the price per unit declined in 2015, dropping from $2,274 to $2,000 per ton.

Carpinterian Miguel Checa, local Spanish teacher and passionate environmental activist, passed away unexpectedly last week. His wishes were to be remembered without a public memorial. On the heels of distributing $56,000 in scholarships to 2016 Carpinteria High School grads, Carpinteria Education Foundation has sent a reminder that it handles scholarship donations from corporate sponsors, individual donors, local businesses and organizations without fees. Additionally, students applying for scholarships do so for free. Fifty years ago last month, the Carpinteria High School class of 1966 crossed the stage and tossed their caps in the air. In a couple months, members of the class will gather once more to share memories, catch up on life since high school and enjoy one another’s company again. Events for the reunion will kick off on Friday, Sept. 30, when the group gets together to attend this year’s big Warrior football game against Bishop Diego. On Saturday, Oct. 1, festivities continue with a 2 p.m. barbecue at Toro Canyon Park. That night there will be a photo taken outside Plaza Playhouse Theater at 6:30 p.m. followed by a concert by The Rincons inside the theater at 7 p.m. The class of 1966 encourages members of other classes who graduated in the 1960s to consider attending. Sanitation has come a long way, baby

BY CRAIG MURRAY, GENERAL MANAGER, CARPINTERIA SANITARY DISTRICT The Mesopotamians had urban drainage systems over 6,000 years ago. Way back in 1,700 B.C., the ancient Greeks used latrines with underground pipelines that carried sewage away from homes.

The Romans had an even more advanced sanitation system—the word “plumbing” is derived from the Latin “plumbus” meaning lead, the primary material used in ancient Rome to make sewer pipes.

Sanitation took a dump in the Dark Ages, pardon the pun. Through the Middle Ages and up until the middle of the 19th century, standard practice was to dump sewage out the window. Literally.

As a result, there were major outbreaks of cholera and other diseases in urbanized areas as sewage contaminated water supplies. “Epidemic” was a buzzword, methinks.

Modern sewer systems really began to develop in the late 1800s. Sir Thomas Crapper is widely credited with inventing the flush toilet and being the origin of the word “crap,” but neither is exactly true. Sir Thomas did hold nine patents related to flush toilets and his company most certainly helped improve sanitation around the world.

Even as sewage collection systems improved into the 20th century, wastewater was still simply piped or channeled to the nearest river or stream. Modern day chemical and biological wastewater treatment processes were first developed in England around the turn of the century, when all of London’s waste was flowing directly into the Thames River.

Fast forward to 1928. Although the genesis is somewhat unclear, a group of folks in the Carpinteria Valley came together to form the Carpinteria Sanitary District. On May 29, 1929, voters within the newly created district boundaries approved a $90,000 bond sale that funded construction of a sewer system throughout the downtown area, including two pump stations. The average homeowner

paid an assessment of $25 per year for this new infrastructure.

Throughout the 1930s and ’40s sewage was collected and discharged directly to the Pacific Ocean with very minimal treatment. I’m not sure when we earned the title World’s Safest Beach, but probably not before 1951 when the district’s first wastewater treatment plant was completed and put into operation. That facility, able to treat up to 500,000 gallons of sewage each day, discharged through a dedicated ocean outfall pipeline offshore of what is now the Carpinteria State Beach.

As Carpinteria grew so did our sewer collection system and our treatment plant. Major upgrades to the treatment facility were made in 1961 and again in 1993, both adding capacity (now up to 2.5 million gallons per day) and dramatically improving the treatment process. In 2015 the district finished another substantial upgrade to the plant and on the horizon are plans to add even higher levels of treatment for beneficial reuse of treated wastewater. After over 80 years in service, we are now strategically replacing or rehabilitating many of the sewers that were built in 1931.

Undoubtedly, sanitation will continue to evolve in the 21st century. History will continue to be made as treatment technologies advance further and water reuse becomes a key component of our local water supply portfolio. Although perhaps not yet glamorous, sewage collection and treatment is a critically important function that makes our community a healthy and enjoyable place to live, work and play.

School board displaces preschoolers

Here are some facts about the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education decision last week to eliminate Transitional Kindergarten (a new, early kindergarten program for 4-year-olds in California public schools) for approximately 28 4-year-olds who have spring birthdays.

Last February, Carpinteria elementary principals, preschool directors and the superintendent told these 28 families that their kids could enroll in TK in Fall 2016 due to a change in the rules. These families, on the guidance of school leaders, spent hours attending doctor’s appointments, meeting with teachers and touring schools, all to formally enroll for TK. At no point did the CUSD Board tell parents that this new deadline was “pending.” Now, with just weeks before school starts, 28 families are scrambling to

In last week’s Coastal View News, Sanderson Smith implored us to consider England’s Brexit vote in regard to political calculus in America (“The UK said ‘Enough’”). Since Smith is one of Carpinteria’s biggest Donald Trump supporters, essentially what he’s saying is we should consider voting for Trump.

That’s an exciting proposition, but I’ll have to say, “No.” Smith makes reference to a lack of “overall dumbness” in our country, or what he referred to as “a general dumbness,” which doesn’t exist here, he claims. Which bring us back to Trump.

If there is a dearth of said dumbness in our country, as Smith writes, then Trump is clearly the outlier in this situation. In fact, if you wanted to pinpoint the largest case of complete dumbness, you’d quickly start with Trump himself.

So my question is, if we’re lacking in dumbness, why would Smith wish us to elect absolute dumbness to oversee a country full of millions and millions of smart people?

It’s confusing to me, too. Maybe Trump can clear this up. Asked recently who he consults with on foreign affairs, he replied, “I’m speaking with myself … because I have a very good brain, and I’ve said a lot of things.” If that doesn’t convince you, Trump also proffered, “I know more about ISIS than the generals.”

Now, just how dumb this is is hard to say, but on a scale of one to 10, it’s probably about 17,000. Trump can count this high, so why he doesn’t comprehend this, is an absolute mystery.

Not to make fun of Trump’s stupidity, but he’s clearly pretty dumb.

Mark Twain, in all wisdom, once wrote, “Reality can be beaten with enough imagination.” Or, as Trump so eloquently put it, “I know words, I have the best words.”

That’s beautiful, man.

Parents in some of these 28 families took new jobs or signed up for college based on their children having increased childcare coverage, but they may have to forfeit those plans. The board claims that the decision was financially motivated, but they are not eliminating TK entirely.

It will cost the 28 families affected over $126,000 to pay for the cost of childcare that TK would have covered.

Last, the CUSD Board did not list anything about changing the TK enrollment birthday on last week’s agenda, possibly violating the Brown Act. Instead, the only relevant item lists TK personnel issues. And the 28 families who would be directly affected by this decision were not notified in advance.

The board’s dire decision is outrageous and wrong-headed. I hope that the board reconsiders its actions and allows 28 young children to pursue the promised education that they deserve.

A: I shopped here, and I felt it needed improvement in an area I knew a little about. Mentally, I’m an organizer. I love the work. I look forward to coming.

Q: About how much time do you spend?

A: I’m here from 9 to 2 three days a week.

Q: Can you describe an emotional moment you’ve had at this job?

A: One lady donated an enormous amount of fabric, and she came in to ask how it was going. I said, “You don’t know how many people appreciate it.” We always thank people who donate items to make the store possible. It’s a win-win.

A: Organizational skills help, but you can also work with customers. It takes all kinds of personalities. We want people.

We get 10 times the donations of some shops.

Q: Do you recommend this volunteer position to other people?

A: I beg them! When someone comes into the work area, I say, “We’d love to have you.”

Help Wanted

The Resale Shop currently has about 25 volunteers, but more are needed, according to store manager Yvonne Davisson. “Some can only come once a week for a few hours. Some have full-time jobs and work a bit on their days off,” she says.

“We’re always happy to have new volunteers—especially ones who can stay late and help close up.”

Proceeds from the Resale Shop go toward a variety of programs. “We help with emergency needs—for instance, if someone needs a hotel for the night,” Davisson says. “We also fund scholarships to Carpinteria schools for low-income kids going into college.”

Volunteers don’t have to be affiliated with St. Joseph’s; about half of them go to another church or don’t attend church.

All the volunteers get trained, whether they organize goods or work with people.

“Some volunteers deal directly with shoppers so good people skills are important,” Davisson says. “We get a lot of needy and homeless shoppers, so it’s important to show compassion and treat them with dignity and respect.”

The men and women who volunteer at the shop are dedicated to the cause and also enjoy the camaraderie they find there. “They all feel good about helping. Some have been helping for 20 years,” Davisson says. “It truly is like a big family. The workers become very close.”

A deputy investigated smoke emitting from the Carpinteria Creek area and called the fire department to assist with extinguishing the fire on June 25 at 6:35 p.m. The officer roamed down the bike path connecting Carpinteria Avenue and Via Real toward the smoke and found a smoldering campfire near the creek and next to two tents. He announced himself and peeked into the tents but found no people in what he believed to be a homeless encampment. In the process, the officer mistakenly tore a patch off a weather-worn tent.

Sugar for the neighbor

Holly Avenue residents believe a meddlesome neighbor was responsible for donating some sugar to them, but instead of a polite delivery of a tablespoon or two, he allegedly dumped it straight into their gas tank. The victim said his gas cap and tank opening were clear of any traces of crystalline substance the last time he had filled up on June 24, but he found the sugar-looking powder under the flap on June 27. Officers verified the presence of sugar and noted the accusation of a neighbor. There was no evidence, but the victims reported that the man they wished to point the finger at had driven away while deputies were taking the report.

Cigarettes, the gateway drug

A deputy investigated a man for illegal public cigarette smoking on June 27 and found that the 26-year-old likely was using more than nicotine. The interaction began with the officer informing the man on Carpinteria Avenue at 8 p.m. that he was breaking municipal code by puffing on the cigarette. The man said he knew the rules, and that’s why he had ditched the butt when he saw the officer. The brief encounter led the officer to believe the man was on narcotics, and the man said he had indeed used heroin. Officers found the drug and some marijuana in the man’s backpack and arrested him.

Credit where it’s due

Sterling Avenue residents reported that opportunistic thieves had snatched a bag containing all of the victims’ financial information from their vehicle on June 24.

The vehicle had been left unlocked with the valuable personal documents sitting on the seat, and in the overnight hours nefarious neighborhood thieves accessed the car and found the treasure trove of handy information like Social Security and bank account numbers. The victims contacted a credit monitoring service and found the crooks had wasted no time in attempting to start fraudulent accounts.

There were no suspects.

Seniors get fire prevention tips

Richard Evans, the fire prevention officer and inspector for Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District, paid a visit to Carpinteria Seniors Inc. at the club’s June meeting. Evans told the group how to improve home safety with simple suggestions like checking old lamp cords and replacing fire alarms every 10 years.

Dan Flynn, Director of the Office of Emergency Management for Santa Barbara County, spoke at a recent meeting of the Morning Rotary Club of Carpinteria. He started his presentation by pointing out that the Santa Barbara region and specifically Carpinteria has only one major highway and one railroad corridor and is bordered by the ocean and the mountains. The region has not had a major earthquake since 1925. Flynn said that the best emergency preparation is the preparation done by each citizen in his or her own homes. In a disastrous earthquake, Carpinteria could be isolated for five days without major assistance. His suggestions included storing at least one gallon of water per person per day to cover five days. He also encouraged Rotarian to sign up for a free service that will send alerts and status reports to phones as emergencies occur. To register and receive alerts, visit awareandprepare.org.

Powdrell described the facility and how it is used to serve the community and the many generous individuals who donate to keep the center operating. He also discussed how an early introduction to art during a child’s development can improve quality of life and enhance educational experience. Debra McCarty, Development Director for the Carpinteria Education Foundation, also spoke to the club. McCarty helped the club recognize the students and families awarded club scholarships. The Rotary Club of Carpinteria awarded $8,100 in college scholarships to eight seniors of the graduating class of 2016 from Carpinteria High School.

What would you describe as your proudest/most memorable moment on the job and why?

In 1991, I won Public Education Program of the Year given by the Southern California Fire Chief’s Public Education Division for my program, “Sparky the Fire Dog.” Sparky was my dog that my wife trained and I took to schools to educate children on fire danger in the home. Ultimately, I was told that the visual-image that Spark provided was what won the award.

What do you feel is the most important character trait for being a firefighter?

I feel the most important trait for being a firefighter is the ability to keep calm under pressure in chaotic situations.

What is something most people would be surprised to learn about you?

I am a history buff. I like antiques and finding “treasures.” When I retire, I would like to volunteer on archeological digs.

After sunset on Thursday, July 7, Linden Field will light up with the first installment of the six-week Carpinteria Movies in the Park series of outdoor films. “Pan,” the live-action prequel to the Peter Pan story, will begin at dusk, around 8:20 p.m. The film is free, and attendees are encouraged to bring low beach chairs, blankets and warm clothes for the night chill.

The highlight of the summer for many Carpinteria children spins into town this weekend with St. Joseph Church’s 59th sat.

Annual Festival. The rides, game booths, food offering and stage entertainment roar to life on Friday, July 8 from 5 to 11 p.m., Saturday, July 9 from noon to 11 p.m. and Sunday, July 10 noon to 9 p.m. Admission and parking are free to the annual carnival held on the church grounds at 1530 Linden Ave. This year’s entertainment includes Flamenco and folkloric dancers, live Antony MArchiAndo file photo Adriel Herrera goes for a spin at last year’s carnival. bands in English and Spanish. Four-person beach fun is easy with Spike Ball.

BY ALONZO OROZCO With the kids now out of school and home for the summer, many parents will be challenged in finding ways of getting them out from in front of their flat screens or computers. Coastal View News recently visited the Ohana Fun Company, the local toy/game store in town, for some potential ways to coax them into enjoying the great outdoors, even if it’s just the backyard.

“It’s definitely a goal of the (Ohana) Fun Company to provide that sort of atmosphere for people to be able to play games outside,” said Matthew Morphy, owner of the Ohana Fun Company which opened a little over two years ago.

Spikeball

One of the hottest games for the season is Spikeball, which consists of a bouncy, 36-inch in diameter trampoline-type net raised 8 inches off the ground along with three balls to carom off it. Four players, two per team, alternate turns slamming the ball off the net, while trying to keep it off the ground. The first team to 21 wins.

“It’s basically like playing volleyball, but instead of playing over a net, you play into a net,” explained Morphy of the game that encompasses the skill set for four square also.

The object of the game is simple: tossing a ring on a string over a hook screwed into a wooden board. It’s a game for all ages, and the wooden board comes in various designs: anything from a buck, to a paddle, to a marlin.

Cornhole/Ring Game

There’s the popular Cornhole where players attempt to toss beanbags into a hole bored in a wooden board, propped at an angle. Although, Ohana doesn’t have one in stock, Morphy is working on building a lightweight version of the game, called the Ring Game, which he plans to rent to customers. Based on a Hawaiian-born game called Portuguese Horseshoes, it’s played with a smaller, flat square wooden board with construction washers which are tossed into the opening, much like its Cornhole counterpart.

A group, ages 14 to 17: Jack Gay has a tremendous ability to work with instructors in aiding in water safety for the younger groups and shows leadership and responsibility. Lexi Persoon demonstrates great work ethic every day and finished first in the A’s run-swim-run workout. When it was complete, she asked to continue the workout with others.

B group, ages 12 to 13: Trinity McCullough has a positive attitude and continuously smiles. She pushes herself to the fullest in every workout we do without a single complaint. Varden Olbrish continues to stand out by displaying great resiliency charging through waves when learning paddle relay.

C group, ages 9 to 11: Jak Espinoza is not only an outstanding competitor, but he also cheers on his teammates every step of the way. Without complaints, Jak pushes his own limits on every workout and race he participates in. Ella Pennestri is a great sport, encourages her teammtes and is always willing to try something new, even when it’s tough. This week she swam all the way to the

Junior Warriors/ Giovanni’s Pizza partner for fundraiser

Customers at Giovanni’s Pizza on Wednesday, July 20, will be munching their pizzas in support of the newly established Junior Warriors Football program. A portion of sales at the restaurant for the duration of the day will benefit the youth football program in its inaugural tackle football season. Youth players ages 6 to 14 are signed up to participate, and there will likely be two-to-three teams in the upcoming season.

SB Breakers to hold Basketball Camp in August

The Santa Barbara Breakers Basketball Team and Coach Curt Pickering will be conducting the Breakers Camp Aug. 1 through 5 for boys and girls ages 5 to 14 at Montecito Covenant Church, 671 Cold Spring Road. Each day will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 1:30 p.m. With the Breakers Camp motto “Building Self Esteem Through the Fundamentals of Basketball,” campers will be taught the fundamental skills of dribbling, passing, shooting, moving without the ball, footwork, defense and the Top 20 Offensive Moves by the 20 Top NBA Players. The Carpinteria Tritons youth water polo club hopes to give the Shaver Lake Tournament another go this year and needs the funds to make the trip. The team will host a yard sale on Saturday, July 9, from 8 to 11 a.m., at 1141 Vallecito Road in order to fundraise. Last year, the team managed a third-place finish at the competitive tournament. Cunningham has reimagined Grimm fairytales, and others, with backstories.

Did you ever wonder why that house was built of sweets? What would you do with a third wish when the first two resulted in such tragedy?

Using present-day details and dark humor, what happens before and after the familiar narratives, the stories explore the often disastrous transformations created by love and need. The title character in “Crazy Old Lady” had very different, even romantic expectations before a tattooed pair of siblings arrives on her candy doorstep. In “Little Man,” a gnome spins straw into gold to win the child he desperately longs for, something “readily available to any drunk and barmaid who link up for three minutes…” The stories are grounded in the inevitable disenchantments of human life—”Most of us can be counted on to manage our own undoing.” Cunningham enlarges the haunting mystery of their originals.

Doubtless, there are way too many political affairs books out there. Most people gravitate toward authors who share their own political opinions. It makes them feel good, like “mental comfort food.”

For balance, I try to mix it up a bit by restricting my selection to the smartest authors, regardless of their political leaning. Rather than perseverating on political pop culture fluff, Charles Krauthammer’s “Things that Matter” tackles salient domestic and geopolitical issues in a compilation of his syndicated news articles and speeches from the last two decades. The quality of his research and the elegance of his arguments provide a real benchmark for political writing that engages and educates the reader.

1. Set your deadline(s)

Deadlines are meant to induce stress. I know none of us really wants more stress in our lives (do you?), but most writers I know struggle with two things: discipline and focus. A good deadline helps with both.

For my deadline, I’ve given myself 10 weeks to finish my book, setting the deadline for Sept. 2.

Recently, a friend and fellow writer called me out for procrastinating on a book I’ve been working on for more than two years. You might find it surprising that a guy like me, who’s written six books and writes a column teaching writing, struggles with procrastination and finishing his writing projects.

Well, the truth is I’m the worst.

I struggle as much as any writer. And I believe this is the reason why: The projects you struggle most to finish are the ones that are the most important to you.

I procrastinate because I subconsciously believe that the longer I wait, the more prepared I’ll be, the better of a writer I’ll be, the more I will understand how to make this book great.

But here’s the truth: the only person who can write this book is the person I am right now. If I don’t write it, no one will.

And so, I need some mind tricks to force myself to the blank page and make it all but impossible not to finish.

Warning: these techniques are intense, and should only be used if you actually want to finish your book. Use at your own risk.

“And West is West” by Ron Childress

Cause and effect on a global scale is territory uniquely charted by author Ron Childress in “And West Is West,” a novel that terrifyingly depicts technology’s power to separate actions from consequences. The book connects readers to two characters, Jessica, a young Air Force drone pilot, and Ethan, a young Wall Street analyst, whose actions have global implications that rip apart the lives of others, and ultimately their own.

“And West is West” will be discussed by the Carpinteria Library Book Club at its next meeting on Wednesday, July 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the library, 5141 Carpinteria Ave. Anyone interested in reading and discussing the novel is welcome to attend the gathering. 2. Give yourself consequences (or why I just wrote a $1,000 check to a presidential candidate I despise)

If you want to make your deadlines and avoid procrastination, create unthinkable and painful consequences.

For example, for my book, I’ve created weekly deadlines for myself, and if I miss them, here are my consequences: First deadline missed: Delete my favorite iPhone game, from my phone (and don’t reinstall until the book is finished).

Second deadline missed: Give my iWatch to my wife (permanently) and buy three pints of Jeni’s ice cream ($12 each) for the people who work in my office.

Third deadline missed: Send a $1,000 check to the presidential candidate I despise.

Honestly, this last one has me terrified. The book I write by Sept. 2 may not be very good, but it will be finished.

Note: If you choose to write a check to an organization you despise, it’s best to write the check in advance and give it to a trusted friend with strict orders to send it if you miss your deadline.

3. Set an intention

One big deadline isn’t enough. You also need a series of smaller, consistent deadlines to keep you focused each day, and this is where an intention comes in.

Here’s an example: Each morning before work, I will write 500 words at (insert your favorite writing location).

Note here that it’s very important to imagine where and when you will write. Your chances of following through go up significantly if you picture yourself writing at a specific location at a specific time.

4. Get community and accountability

I believe in the power of community.

It’s good to be around people who are struggling with the same problems you are. I’ve found that when I spend time with writers who are better than me, I become a better writer.

Make friends with other writers. You will probably find that you become a better writer almost through osmosis.

Personally, I’ve asked several writing friends to hold me accountable to finishing my book.

5. Share your writing

For the practicing writer, sharing is great regardless of the outcome. If your audience loves it, you have the pleasure of connection. If they don’t, you have the feedback you need to make it better.

For my book, I plan to share my first draft with my online writing community to get their feedback on how to make it better.

Procrastination can be defeated

We sometimes think procrastination is a moral failing, that we’re irresponsible, bad people for failing to follow through on our plans.

The reality is that procrastination is often just a lack of structure, and what the above techniques do is provide a structure that will all but guarantee that you will finish your book.

Practice

Choose one of these techniques and put it to use to finish your own writing projects, whether it’s a short story or your book (I highly recommend giving yourself a consequence!). Dorrance home launched beach subdivision

One of the first lots to be developed in the Dorrance Subdivision was the Near Beach Hotel on the corner of Linden Avenue and Dorrance Way in 1925. The hotel was constructed by Rev. John Woods Dorrance, who owned the entire beachside tract and sold it lot by lot as Carpinteria’s first subdivision. Salvaged materials from the 1925 earthquake-damaged Arlington Hotel in Santa Barbara were incorporated into the building when it was constructed soon after the quake. According to Betty Stein, who has owned the home since 1971, remodels to the building have uncovered massive redwood hotel doors used for structural support inside the walls.

Honoring the auto

A magnet to car lovers up and down the coast, the Rods & Roses Car Show on July 2 combined form and function in its dozens of jaw-dropping cars and trucks. Big engines and bold colors left an impression on the hundreds of visitors to downtown Carpinteria, and nonprofit participants left with successful fundraising dollars thanks to the auto admirers.
