Two Sheriff’s deputies were violently attacked repeatedly by a burglary suspect attempting to avoid arrest on Via Real in the early morning hours of Aug. 20. Deputies were dispatched around 7 a.m. to Franciscan Court condominiums for a vehicle burglary in progress. When officers arrived, the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Sage Wyttenberg of Santa Barbara, had fled into the 3900 block of Via Real and was located hiding in a creek bed and apparently under the influence of stimulants.

Wyttenberg was arrested after deputies located stolen property on his person from burglaries in the area. A search of the surrounding areas uncovered a plethora of additional stolen property including jewelry and bicycles. Multiple victims in Carpinteria were identified through the investigation.

Deputies chased Wyttenberg on foot and he again attacked them. Deputies again utilized impact weapons until Wyttenberg was able to grab ahold of one of the deputy’s batons. Additional deputies arrived shortly thereafter, and Wyttenberg was restrained.

Wyttenberg and two of the officers were transported to Cottage Hospital and treated for multiple injuries. The suspect was later medically cleared and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail with bail set at $500,000 for charges including possession of stolen property, escape, residential and vehicle burglary, possession of burglary tools, battery on a peace officer and resisting arrest with injury.

Residents hold meeting to consider Green Party chapter

Santa Barbara area residents interested in launching a local Green Party chapter will hold an organizing and membership meeting on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Faulkner Gallery, located in the Santa Barbara Main Library, 40 E. Anapamu Street. The group will brainstorm ideas and elect a new County Council for our Green Party local. There will also be voter registration forms available.

The Santa Barbara Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America will provide speakers who served during the Vietnam War era for groups, organizations and classrooms in advance of The Moving Wall exhibition, which will be in place Oct. 12 to 17 at Chase Palm Park in Santa Barbara. “Visiting The Moving Wall after a presentation by one of our VVA 218 members is bound to enrich and deepen the experience,” stated a press release. There is no charge for the educational opportunity, although donations to the Chapter are welcome. There are 98 names from Santa Barbara County on The Wall. Carpinterian Peter Bie is one of several VVA members who will be available to speak to groups.

Carpinteria State Beach welcomes campers, tidepoolers, beach goers and locals with over 200 campsites, hosting nearly 2,000 visitors on a full night. A small city of its own, the campground sees nearly 1 million visitors a year, between campers and day users. Park rangers, lifeguards, maintenance staff, park aides and camp hosts all take care to keep the park running smoothly and provide visitors an opportunity to transition from the hustle of everyday life into the bliss of a beach vacation.

Meeting up with family and friends, campers can relax at picnic tables or cool their feet in the ocean. Evening comes with the smell of campfires and outdoor cooking, while some visitors choose the proximity of downtown Carpinteria to eat at one of the many excellent local restaurants.

In addition to tidepooling and other beach activities, visitors can learn about local history and, during summer, participate in junior ranger programs, campfire programs and bike tours. Though the character of Carpinteria State Beach remains timeless, some new features have been added to the park this year, including the recently completed dune boardwalk, a new park office and renovated

visitors center with interpretive exhibits and an expanded living tidepool display.

More work is planned for the park in the near future with new interpretive panels, viewing scopes near the Jelly Bowl and construction starting on the next phase of the dune boardwalk.

What I like about Carpinteria

Rocky and I have only lived in Carpinteria three-plus years, but I bet what we like about Carpinteria is similar to what others, including those who have lived here all of their lives, like about living in this small beach community.

We like the pace—slow.

We like the friendly residents—many.

We like the climate—balmy.

We like the local beach—just me and my dog on early mornings.

We like if you leave your front door open to take the summer breezes, (you might get a visit from a friendly neighbor dog).

We like the street fairs—local with just a smattering of tourists.

We like that Carpinteria is bike and pedestrian friendly.

We like our local citizen representatives.

And we like that Carpinteria has not been discovered yet. Some of us moved here from places that had been low key until lack of attention to good planning and what gives a community its special personality, got lost along the way.

School board severs superintendent contract Teachers, parents decry abrupt decision

By Lea Boyd Despite two hours of impassioned pleas by teachers and parents, the Carpinteria Unified School District’s Board of Education voted 4-0 (absent Alicia Jacobson) to release Superintendent Micheline Miglis after one year of her three-year contract at a special meeting on Aug. 22.

A difference in vision and philosophy motivated the “mutual agreement,” the board announced, adding that it could not comment further on reasons behind the decision that blindsided staff and parents just one day before the start of the school year.

Over 100 staff and community members turned out to show their support for Miglis, who was described by many as caring, smart, compassionate and student-centered. Several teachers were brought to tears during public comment; many said Miglis had gained their trust through her respectful interactions and willingness to listen to staff needs.

The staff’s relationship with past Superintendent Paul Cordeiro had soured early into his decade-long tenure at CUSD, and several teachers said that Miglis had begun undoing the damage done in the Cordeiro era. “Micheline Miglis has been a breath of fresh air,” said longtime CUSD employee Laura Manriquez. “She has been a 180-degree turnaround from what we had.”

The question of what could have driven the school board to such an extreme action was left unanswered. The decision was made in closed session, as are all confidential personnel matters.

Furthermore, the board said there is a confidentiality clause in the agreement reached with Miglis.

“This was a very difficult decision and … in the end, the only people that know the whole story are the five board members and the former Superintendent,” stated board member Michelle Robertson in an email to CVN. “Any speculation or rumors only do more damage than good as we all will need to heal from this.”

Ousting a leader who had won such overwhelming support from teachers was denounced as vindictive. “I feel like you are punishing Micheline for being too close to the union,” said Felicity Moore, union vice-president. Urging the board to reconsider plans to let Miglis go, she said, “The very spirit and morale of your employees is at stake.”

Teachers and the board have been deadlocked in salary negotiations for the 2015/2016 schoolyear since last spring.

Teachers union President Jay Hotchner announced that the union plans to launch a recall campaign for the board members who retain their seats after the November election. Longtime Boardmember Terry Hickey Banks is not seeking re-election this fall, nor is Alicia Jacobson. Jaclyn Fabre, the Summerland board representative, is running uncontested this fall.

Hotchner said a recall of Fabre will be attempted after the election.

The three board candidates for Hickey Banks and Jacobson’s two seats—Maureen Foley Claffey, Gary Blair and Rogelio Delgado—attended the meeting. Claffey spoke out against the secrecy surrounding the issue, including the board’s decision to hold a special Monday morning meeting that wasn’t announced until late Friday afternoon. She noted that unless there was some sort of criminal wrong doing, the board was making a mistake severing ties with Miglis.

Ms. Miglis and the Board have reached a tentative agreement for separation that will be considered in closed session. As a governance team that includes both the Superintendent and Board of Trustees, it has become clear that our vision and philosophies differ, and it is in the best interest of the District that we part at this time. The agreement that we have reached with the outgoing Superintendent contains a confidentiality clause. It should also be clear that the terms of separation were mutually agreed upon by both parties. The parties acknowledge and agree that the terms and provisions of this agreement were made in confidence and shall remain confidential to the greatest extent possible under law.

We would like to also acknowledge and thank Ms. Miglis for the work that she has done over the last year. We as a District would like for students, staff, parents, and the community to keep focus on learning and keep this matter out of the classroom. Carpinteria Unified School District will continue to operate and provide the highest quality of education possible during this transition.

A recent blunder related to the expansion of Transitional Kindergarten, an early childhood education program, elicited the most public display of the board’s displeasure with its new superintendent. Miglis took responsibility for allowing families to enroll their children in an expanded version of TK last spring

Monday morning’s meeting swelled far beyond capacity at the district office. Over 100 Miglis supporters, many carrying signs and wearing nametags that said “Save our Superintendent,” attended the meeting, which was relocated to the Canalino cafeteria.

Board members characterized the move as putting the “cart before the horse,” and initially denied the expansion because of the added teacher’s salary the program would cost.

Parents of 28 children enrolled in expanded TK were outraged when notified of the board’s rejection. Several parents publicly requested that the board reconsider, and accused the board of a Brown Act violation for failing to correctly make a public notice of the meeting in which the initial decision was made. The board reversed the decision on Aug. 9 citing a need to “do what’s right” by the families admitted. (For full disclosure, the author of this article acknowledges that she was among the parents affected by the TK expansion.)

Boardmembers were visibly displeased that Miglis had allowed the expansion, and several stated that they had heard about it for the first time in June when it was folded into their budget approval.

But at the Aug. 22 meeting, teachers and parents questioned whether the TK mistake could have warranted Miglis’ early end with the district. “(Board members) can’t tell you everything they know,” said Alex Pulido, retired board member.

On the heels of the Miglis vote, the board also approved the appointment of retired Santa Barbara School District Superintendent Brian Sarvis as interim superintendent of CUSD, effective immediately.

It is with a heavy heart that I tell our friends of the passing of the most gentle and loving man I have ever known—Kelly Eugene Donovan, born April 27, 1959 at St. Francis Hospital in Santa Barbara.

Kelly died Aug. 7, 2016 with me, his wife Cathy Donovan, by his side. Although he was in tremendous and excruciating daily pain, the fact that Kelly is no longer

suffering helps ease our pain. He had an avid love for the ocean, beach, boating, fishing, swimming, sunrises, sunsets, sailing his friend Sandi’s sailboat, and his mother- and father-in-law’s (Tom and Maisie) pontoon boat, as well as his sister-in-law and her husband’s (Karen and Bill) pontoon boat.

The love of Kelly’s life was a beautiful redheaded chow/shepherd mix named D.O.G. (a.k.a. Fluffy Britches) who lived for 20 years. After Kelly got out of the Marine Corps, he went right to work as an electrician until he couldn’t work anymore. He could and would fix practically anything that came his way on his many “Honey Do” lists, and he always seemed to have parts and tools on hand.

Kelly, you will be greatly missed as you had a lot of love in your life to give and take. May you rest in peace like the peace you had for others. There will be no service, as that was one of Kelly’s wishes that we the family want to respect. He also wants to be laid to rest in a quiet and peaceful location. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

In praise of Miglis

Last Friday, the (now former) Superintendent of Carpinteria Unified School District, Micheline Miglis, had a morning meeting for district teachers and staff. It was an amazing conclave of talent in one room, the first time in many years this kind of “back to school” event had happened. New teachers and staff were introduced, awards for years at CUSD—some for five, 10, 15, 20 and 30 years—were handed out. Ms. Miglis also spoke about her background and the people who have influenced her life.

This presentation put a real “face” to our Superintendent, which we had not seen on others for too many years.

Then came Monday, when the school board met and fired the Superintendent.

Apparently, there had been no performance evaluation. Close to 150 citizens of Carpinteria asked the board not to fire Ms. Miglis in the midst of a three-year contract.

Now the CUSD financial reserves may be used up defending the board in a possible lawsuit to determine whether they violated the Brown Act for proper meeting notifications. The State attorney General will look into that. It will not be surprising if a recall petition is started— all this just before elections for new board members.

One more for Miglis

In a 1961 speech, President John F. Kennedy made a bold statement on the issue of secrecy in government. “The very word ‘secrecy’ is repugnant in a free and open society;” he said, “and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths, and to secret proceedings.”

Why the backwards glance to a distant president? Because on Monday we were presented with a plot as secretive as a bad Hollywood take on the Cold War: CUSD Board members agree to fire and replace new superintendent behind closed doors because of a mysterious and unidentified crisis the day before school starts!

While this may make for a dramatic action in some local version of a anticommunist B-movie, it is hardly the appropriate action for the first week of school in a district that is facing budget woes, a labor impasse and a group of

seriously frazzled parents with anxious students.

Why the rush? Why now?

And what about the financial and legal ramifications? Why waste money paying off a highly qualified administrator? And what about the money thrown at the consultant who helped with the search? And the funds for a new search? What about a wrongful termination lawsuit that could end up in court and cost many tens of thousands? All this, when we were told at just the last board meeting of the extreme budget shortfalls causing the reconsideration of hiring even one extra TK teacher?

Am I missing something?

As with many things, the public will never know exactly why Ms. Miglis was scapegoated. But because of the hurried and cloaked nature of this meeting, something feels suspicious, forced and a bit shady. Good for movies, yes, but bad for small town politics.

Over 30 teachers spoke at the emergency school board meeting in support of Superintendent Micheline Miglis, in addition to some parents voicing their enthusiastic support. In each instance, there was the most amazing sense of community support and passion about the tremendous and positive changes in the quality of education, communication and caring for teachers and students that had taken place under Micheline’s leadership during her short tenure at CUSD. Did the CUSD School Board members even listen and consider the testimonials given during two hours of public comment? Apparently not, since the board had already reached a separation agreement with Miglis that included a confidentiality clause, and had been in communication with Sarvis, who was appointed interim superintendent following the announcement of Miglis’ dismissal.

According to Noozhawk, Miglis’ district email was deactivated immediately.

Are we missing some information?

Where is the transparency? Is the board in violation of the Brown Act? Is the School Board representing the residents, taxpayers, teachers, parents and most of all, the children?

Beatles tribute band Sgt. Pepper

The Beatles performed their last paid live set at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on Aug. 29, 1966—50 years ago this month. To commemorate that final show, the acclaimed Beatles tribute band Sgt. Pepper will perform on Friday, Aug. 26 at 8 p.m. at the Plaza Playhouse Theater, 4916 Carpinteria Ave. The tribute band will recreate the Beatles’ song list (a mere 11 tunes) just as the Fab Four played it that day, despite most of their performance being drowned out by thousands of screaming fans. Following the Candlestick Park set (which lasted just 30 minutes) Sgt. Pepper will launch into several well-known tunes in the Beatles songbook, along with recognizable hits from other British Invasion artists.

National Park Service Centennial

The National Park Service Centennial and Channel Islands National Park will be celebrated at the Ventura Harbor on Thursday, Aug. 25 from 5 to 10 p.m. The event takes place on Founder’s Day, the day that the National Park Service was created by President Woodrow Wilson, and recognizes 100 years of our national parks. Halos Pitchforks

One bottle down

A deputy responded to a shoplifting call from a supermarket on Linden Avenue on Aug. 10 at about 1 p.m. A man matching the description of the shoplifter was walking through the parking lot toward Maple Avenue. When the deputy made contact with the man, the man said he was sorry and started to cry. The deputy asked the man to calm down, but he continued crying, told the deputy he was sorry again and admitted to taking a bottle of bourbon from the store.

With permission from the man, the deputy searched his backpack and found a large, half empty bottle of Jack Daniel’s.

The man had a strong odor of “an unknown alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath and person.” His eyes were red and watery, and he was unsteady on his feet. The deputy asked the man to sit on the curb for his safety.

When asked what his plans were for the day, the man said he wanted to find someone to end his life. The deputy determined that the man was intoxicated to the point where he was unable to care for his own safety or the safety of others.

Arrested for Public Intoxication, the man was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail where staff and the jail nurse were notified of the man’s suicidal statement and a request was made for a mental health evaluation.

Sir, you forgot your bag

On Aug. 13 at about 12:37 p.m., staff from a motel on Via Real called sheriff’s deputies to report that a baggie of an “unknown white powdery substance” was found in a room that a motel patron had checked out of that morning. The property was “booked for destruction.”

Your sunglass case as well?

On Aug. 8 at about 5:50 p.m., a deputy was dispatched to a supermarket on Casitas Pass Road. An employee had found a sunglass case containing drug paraphernalia in a grocery cart in the parking lot.

Only slightly buzzed

A sheriff’s deputy working uniformed patrol in a marked vehicle observed a maroon sedan driving through the intersection of Maple Avenue and 8th Street “fast enough to bottom out … as it passed” on Aug. 13 at about 6:40 p.m. Initiating a traffic enforcement stop, the deputy followed the vehicle to the back lot of a drugstore at 801 Linden Ave. The vehicle “sped through the rear parking lot then came to an abrupt stop.”

Immediately upon stopping, the driver stepped out of the vehicle and started to walk toward the deputy. The deputy ordered the man back to his vehicle, and the man complied. Approaching the passenger side of the vehicle, the deputy immediately smelled a “distinct and heavy odor of an alcoholic beverage.”

Asked if he had been drinking, the man said he was “a little buzzed” from

drinking beer at a festival earlier in the day. His speech was “heavy and slurred,” the deputy reported. After failing a series of field sobriety tests, the deputy arrested the man for driving under the influence.

Asked if he understood his rights, the man “became angry, spoke incoherently about God” and told the deputy he was going to hell because he wasn’t compassionate and forgiving.

Black tar

On Aug. 14 at about 1:05 a.m., a uniformed deputy, driving a marked sheriff’s vehicle, conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle with a missing front license plate that had just left a motel on Carpinteria Avenue. A records check revealed multiple arrest warrants for the man driving the vehicle. As the deputy took the man into custody, the deputy saw “a used, uncapped syringe in plain view in the side map pocket of the driver’s door.” Upon conducting a probable cause search of the man’s vehicle, the deputy discovered three additional “used and uncapped syringes” in the vehicle’s center console.

A used methamphetamine pipe was also located in a cup holder, along with a bindle of less than one gram of black tar heroin. The man stated that he had relapsed while mourning the drug overdose of his brother.

Transient causing a disturbance

On Aug. 16 at about 2:15 p.m., a deputy was dispatched to 389 Linden Ave. on a report of a transient causing a disturbance. The description the deputy was given matched that of a 51-year-old female transient who the deputy was familiar with and had seen earlier in the day.

The woman was standing on the sidewalk, holding a knife in a threatening manner and yelling at a man who stood near by. The deputy pointed his firearm at the woman and “ordered her at gun point to drop the knife.” She closed the folding blade of the knife and dropped it to the ground, then began yelling at the deputy when he ordered her to lay on the ground with her hands behind her back; she continued yelling at him as he repeated the order to lay on the ground.

The deputy approached the woman and attempted to handcuff her from a standing position, but the woman refused to put her hands behind her back and yelled at the deputy that she was not going to jail. Forcing her hands behind her back, the deputy handcuffed the woman who then stopped resisting. As she was moved to the patrol car, the woman screamed, “Go back to Mexico!” at the man she had threatened with the knife.

The man later said he did not know the woman and had never seen her before.

The woman was irate and continued yelling at the deputy and then at the custody deputies as she was booked into county jail, where she was “placed in a temporary cell until she calmed down.”

Lenny Katz’s vibrantly colorful paintings are now hanging on the walls of Island Brewing Company, 5049 6th Street, where they will add to the lively atmosphere through Oct. 3.

In an artist statement, Katz recalls a dream in which a friend asked, “Why do you paint the way you do?” Katz answered, “I hear rainbows; I paint music!” Using a small brush, he weaves thousands of dots and strokes to form a painting, which takes up to four months to complete. African Keyhole Gardens come to Carpinteria CVN

GARDEN GOSSIP CHRIS & LISA CULLEN If you have never heard of an African Keyhole Garden, then join the club—neither had I. That was until I got an email from Carpinteria local Pam Rousseau asking me to come by and take a look at her garden.

I did some searching online for African Keyhole Gardens before our visit and was surprised and a bit embarrassed that I had never heard of this kind of garden.

The other surprise was that Pam’s African Keyhole Garden is constructed on the brick patio at Vista de Santa Barbara Mobile Home Park.

The mastermind behind Pam’s Keyhole Garden is garden designer Lynn Adams, owner of Carpinteria Nursery (933 Elm Ave.). Pam and Lynn were in the process of redoing her patios and gardens, and Lynn suggested Pam look into the African Keyhole Garden. She was sold once she read up on the concept.

Constructed entirely out of free bricks and pavers from Craigslist adverts, Pam’s African Keyhole Garden is a selfsustaining system designed to provide food to families in drought stricken and resource-poor areas of the world, such as southern Africa. It is constructed entirely out of recycled materials, requires very little water and doubles as a compost bin.

The first step is to draw your circle and place chicken wire to keep out gophers and moles. The beds are constructed in layers, with the first layer consisting of broken bottles and rusty iron, broken bricks and other large pieces of debris.

The theory on the rusty iron is that it not only provides drainage, but also adds minerals to the soil as time goes on. Isn’t that crazy? I love it! After the drainage layer comes cardboard, then things like wood ash, manure, shredded paper, more cardboard, etc.

This garden has a big output. Pam’s garden was constructed last summer and she has been harvesting carrots, beets, herbs and greens of all kinds, and now the tomatoes and cucumbers have taken over.

The central basket becomes a repository of all green waste, from coffee grounds to egg shells and everything in between; these organic ingredients become compost that continues to feed the garden, so there is no need for fertilizers of any kind. And unlike conventional compost piles, this one doesn’t need to be turned.

You can also throw in a few worms for extra go power.

As the green waste breaks down, it generates heat that warms the soil and helps the garden grow more vigorously.

A cage can be set over the garden, which could also be covered in shade cloth or plastic for a nifty makeshift greenhouse, heated by the compost.

There are numerous websites and YouTube videos that provide instruction on how to make your own Keyhole Garden.

But, if you don’t want to or can’t build your own, call Lynn Adams at Carpinteria Nursery and I’m sure she’d be thrilled to build one for you.

School started on Aug. 23 at Carpinteria High School and Rincon and Foothill high schools, and CHS freshmen got an early start with an orientation program on Aug. 22. CHS soccer alums make plays in Westmont vs. UCSB match

BY ALONZO OROZCO Two former Carpinteria High School soccer players joined forces the night of Aug. 20 when Westmont College took on UCSB on the Gauchos’ home pitch at Harder Stadium in an exhibition match.

Senior Genaro Hurtado and freshman Eduardo (Lalo) Delgado, both former Warriors, donned different Warrior jerseys this time—the white and maroon colors of Montecito’s Westmont campus.

Hurtado, who started the game as a defender, was tested from the beginning as UCSB’s Josue Espana drilled a shot off a Warrior player to make it 1-0, at the 6:58 mark. The Warriors, however, charged right back, earning a penalty kick after drawing a foul. However, when Westmont’s Augie Andrade banged the attempt off the left post around the 8-minute mark, UCSB still clung to the early lead.

As play developed in the first half, the Gauchos were able to control the ball at midfield, continuing to put pressure on Warrior goalkeeper Spencer Petty. Hurtado’s play on the back line helped keep Westmont in the game, but when Randy Mendoza’s cross landed on the head of Espana at the 30:01 mark, UCSB scored its second goal for a 2-0 lead. The Gauchos would take that lead into the locker room, shutting down the Warriors in the first half.

Delgado landed in goal to begin the second half. The freshman goalkeeper saw a flurry of action right away, as UCSB added to its lead when Nick DePuy headed a pass from Dalton Pando into the back of the net for a 3-0 Gaucho lead at the 30:01 mark. Delgado would make three saves on the evening to help slow the Gauchos attack.

“It’s a big difference (between high school and college soccer), but throughout this summer I played with the PDL (Player Developmental League) Fusion (Ventura County), so I was used to the fast pace,” said Delgado of the league that helps young players transition to play at the next level.

In the end, the small school fell 3-0 to 13th ranked, NCAA Division I UCSB. The Gauchos hold a slight advantage in the local rivalry, standing at 27-23-4 with their victory in the 54th Bryant’s Cup. Despite the defeat, Hurtado and Delgado remain enthusiastic about being teammates again. “It’s great having someone who I know and trust out there,” said Hurtado who followed in the footsteps of yet another player from Carpinteria, Muhammad Mehai, who made the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Team in 2015.

Also in the stands that night was Carpinteria coach Leo Quintero, who posed for photos with his two former players on the field after the game.

Martial arts studios offer mind/body combo

Dunn credits the success of the studio to the fact that she and Chung, who also works as a local auctioneer, both live in the community. “We saw a need here, and were able to pool our resources together,” said Dunn.

When co-owners Matthew Chung and Amy Dunn took over the local martial arts studio at 933 Linden Ave. last October, they knew they had some work ahead of them. “The studio was closed for a week, and then we took it over and had to resign everyone,” said Chung. As a result, enrollment immediately increased from 16 to 22 students, and less than a year later, the dojo (Japanese for martial arts studio) has doubled its student count.

Part of the nationwide United Studios of Self Defense (USSD) organization founded by 10th Degree Black Belt and Professor Charles Mattera in 1968, the dojo offers instruction for all age groups. “Mostly the reason for joining is to help build confidence in children, give them a solid foundation to help them with other sports events, including dance, and to teach them respect, discipline,” said Dunn, whose children, as well as Chung’s, participate in the program. “For the adults that join,

Since 2009, Way of the Orient owner Samuel Villegas has been teaching the disciplines of hapkido and taekwondo at his martial arts studio, located at 5406 Carpinteria Ave. The studio, which first opened in the 1990s, is part of the Way of the Orient Academy, which has offered classes in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties for over 30 years.

“Hapkido is about using the opponent’s or the attacker’s energy against him,” said Villegas of the method of self defense that involves foot movements, grabs, sweeps and ways of protecting yourself against those with weapons. It mixes Japanese jujitsu and judo, causing the aggressor to become off balance.

Taekwando, on the other hand, is known as the art of kicks and punches, and is actually an Olympic sport. “In taekwando, the majority of techniques are kicks,” said Villegas. Some hand strikes are also used, but students often start off learning the effectiveness of traditional blocks used in karate.

The sport also emphasizes the “never say can’t” philosophy, which was introduced

by Camarillo studio owner/master Tom Ball. It emphasizes the proper attitude to have when entering into martial arts. “You’re not coming into martial arts to be a bully,” said Villegas. The goal for students of all ages is to strengthen themselves as individuals and have a positive impact on other people.

In his roughly seven years of running the studio, Villegas has seen a lot of kids go through the program and benefit in myriad ways. “I see it outside the studio,” said Villegas. “(The students) do other sports with confidence.”

A competitive trilogy: everybody gets a trophy CVn

a tRaineR’s jouRnal Rob buRke When I began the journey to open a gym in Carpinteria, I never imaged that I would forgo working out for a day—let alone four months. My activities have been confined to laps through fast food drive-thrus and scaffolding climbs for cardio. Today, five months later, if you cup your ear in the gym’s direction, you’ll hear a faint echo from the training center: “Help! My pants don’t fit.”

Now that the gym is open and the place is bustling with activity, I’m ready to start working out again and stoke my competitive spirit. With timing that couldn’t have been better, I was challenged by one of my bodybuilder members to see which one of us can get in the best shape by February. Initially, I assumed he was joking since competing against him would be like playing seesaw with a 300-pound gorilla. But it didn’t take me long to say, “Let’s do it!” But instead of a bodybuilding or power lifting contest, however we agreed to make it the “Most Aesthetically Pleasing Body” competition with much shared laughter.

In order to have a competition, we must have a prize so I suggested a winner’s T-shirt with the words, “I’m the most aesthetically pleasing guy at TurboFit.” The loser’s T-shirt will have a picture of the winner with the words “I lost to this most aesthetically pleasing guy, but I still get a trophy.” I think we were the only ones who thought this idea was funny. Now that we have the laughter out of our systems, the real work begins.

Not long ago, I had the opportunity to cross an item off my bucket list: kayaking in the open waters of the Pacific.

This experience was direct challenge to the notion that if you have Parkinson’s disease, which I do, there are physical limitations that need to be acknowledged.

Inflatable kayaks in tow, a close friend and I ventured up to north to realize my dream. Five years ago, when I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, I wouldn’t allow myself to go into that deep dark place of despair and depression. I actually threw myself into an opposite mindset, pushing myself into every questionable physical challenge from running half-marathons to 20-mile backpacking trips.

Building the gym was a huge challenge, but its completion only demonstrated that there is absolutely nothing that can hold me back, and I thought kayaking should be an easy check off the bucket list. The conditions at Morro Bay were placid, but getting into the kayak was comedic to say the least. It took two of us and the support of an audience on the pier overhead. I tipped the kayak twice to the gasps of those watching, followed by cheers as I got back up and tried again.

Applause faded as the awesome conditions made it easy to paddle out swiftly with the sea birds and otters. My tremors were confined mostly to my legs, but I was not going to let a little shake get in my way of this life-changing moment. I allowed myself to look 360 degrees at the amazing scene, and then the emotions of my reality poured out of my eyes. “I am doing it!” I thought, “I’m kayaking!” Elation would be an understatement. With a thrust of my paddle into the air, I proclaimed victory with a rebel yell. My friend smiled with tears streaming down his cheeks, too.

“You’re amazing, Robby!” he yelled across the water to me.

I won. Competition over.

Beach day for a cause

On Aug. 21 the Jenny Schatzle Beach Party benefitting the Surf Happens Foundation was held at the picturesque setting of Santa Claus Lane. Perfect weather, soft sand and nice little waves greeted the crew on hand, along with an obstacle course by JSP, surf lessons by Surf Happens, gourmet food by Duo Catering, and beverages by Rincon Brewery. The event raised $4,950 for the Surf Happens Foundation, which will fund an afterschool program for 12 local children from September to January. The Surf Happens Foundation empowers low-income, at-risk youth and children surviving cancer through the sport of surfing, ocean safety and stewardship, and the Jenny Schatzle Program of Santa Barbara aims to change lives through fitness and empowering mantras.

Seniors learn about Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group

donnie Nair, facilitator of the local Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group, recently gave a talk titled “understanding Alzheimer’s disease and tips for Caregivers” to Carpinteria Seniors inc. Nair cautioned that Alzheimer’s—a progressive brain disease with no known cure—can be devastating emotionally, physically and financially.

Caregivers are welcome at the support group meetings, held the first and third Wednesday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church on the corner of Vallecito place and ogan Road.

Morning Rotary dives in with Ocean Futures Society

holly Lohuis, marine biologist and dive partner of Jean-michel Cousteau, visited the morning Rotary recently to talk about the mission of the ocean Futures Society, a Santa Barbara-based nonprofit that seeks to inspire and educate people throughout the world to act responsible for the protection of the world’s oceans. oFS explores and documents the critical connection between humanity and nature, and celebrates the ocean’s vital importance to the survival of all life on our planet.

Lohuis shared with the club video and images from her life of diving and filming all over the world. She says that Carpinteria and the Channel islands are still one of her favorite spots to dive. the Channel islands and the surrounding marine sanctuaries are among the most biodiverse areas in the world, and they present amazing opportunities to explore the abundance the ocean has to offer.

Cub Scouts add Kindergarten program

the Carpinteria Cub Scouts will add a Lion den to the tigers, bears, Wolves and Webelos that currently make up pack 50. While Cub Scout programs have been traditionally offered to boys in the first through fifth grades, kindergartners are now invited to join the fun.

Carpinteria Cub Scout pack 50 has been chosen as a pilot site for a new Scouting program for kindergarten-age boys. the Lion program weaves traditional Scouting concepts of character development, leadership skills, personal fitness and citizenship into activities that are age-appropriate and fun for boys and parents. Rotary Clubs join forces for Fiesta

Nine Rotary Clubs from throughout the area came together with the help of ocean Breeze Nursery to decocrate a float for the Fiesta Parade bursting with flowers. The float was themed after Stearns Wharf and featured a sea of flowers and replica wharf.

After two weeks of construction, Rotarians gathered on Aug. 4 at the Carriage museum to decorate the float with flowers from the Carpinteria Valley. Rotary Clubs from Goleta, Santa barbara, montecito and Carpinteria contributed to the effort.

White House once removed

Tucked under an oak canopy off Foothill Road, Ivy Oaks, the longtime home of the Llewellyn Goodfield Jr. family, once housed Chester Alan Arthur II, son of the 21st President of the United States. The craftsman home and barn at 3929 Foothill Road were built around 1909 by Jerome and Grace Chaffee. Chester Arthur and his wife, Myra Fithian Arthur, lived there from 1916 to 1936. The Arthurs named the property Nirvana, but its next owner, Ruth Melin, changed it to Ivy Oaks.

Llewellyn and Catherine Goodfield moved from Santa Barbara to Ivy Oaks in 1948 with their two sons because they wanted more space for the boys. Llewellyn Jr. and wife Marilyn now own the property. Their son Graham was raised there and now lives in the converted barn with his wife, Hannah, and their two children. The Goodfields delight in sharing the beauty and serenity of the property with family and friends.

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Almost anyone who has ever had to address a group of strangers can attest to the fact that speaking in public can be a nerve-wracking experience. But what if you don’t even speak the same language as the audience you’d like to address?

2016 San Marcos High School graduate Angela Gladkikh knows exactly what that feels like. When she moved from Siberia to Santa Barbara County in the middle of her sixth grade year, she didn’t speak a word of English.

“I felt very alone,” Angela says, recalling that time. “I sat in that classroom, but understood next to nothing. I had no resources, except for an Oxford Russian-English dictionary. It wasn’t until my eighth grade year that I began to feel some confidence.”

In addition to her dictionary, Angela carried a notebook around with her.

“I’d write a word or a phrase down in my notebook,” she says. “Then that night I’d write out the definition. I’d spend the weekend reviewing the definitions I had jotted down.” In time, Angela added a thesaurus to her list of handy references she toted around with her.

“I wasn’t satisfied with learning the simple stuff,” the soft-spoken teenager says today. Angela, who was a member of San Marcos’s Health Academy and who is attending Georgetown University this fall to study international health on a pre-med track, tends to push herself. “By the time I reached the ninth grade, I really wanted to learn more complex words.

I found them to be especially helpful in writing.”

She was serious about improving her communications skills, so much so that just two and a half years after arriving in this country, she joined the school newspaper. The experience was transformative.

“When writing became something I didn’t have to do, I learned to really enjoy it,” she says. “In the process, it really fed my interests in other subjects, and I found that with each day I was becoming more comfortable in both writing and speaking.”

The extent to which she challenged herself to get outside her comfort zone wasn’t limited to a writing desk, however.

She ran for student office as a freshman — and lost. But that did not leave her deterred. Her junior year she was elected as a student representative to the school board, an experience she loved.

“I realized that the more involved you are, the more passionate you become about making a difference,“ she says.

Her classmates recognized that passion, too: just before the start of her senior year, she was elected president of San Marcos High School’s class of 2016.

Angela has every intention of carrying that passion for making a difference into adulthood. She spent her final three years of high school in Model United Nations, an educational simulation and academic competition “in which students learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations.” When asked about her career aspirations, she answers without hesitation: the World Heath Organization.

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham It wasn’t long ago when the Channel Islands National Park was nearly void of the tiny, endemic island fox—the largest land predator on the windswept northern chain. At the turn of the century, as few as 55 foxes barely survived in the wild on mountainous Santa Cruz Island. Even more gripping was that only 15 foxes remained on nearby Santa Rosa and San Miguel islands. One of the rarest foxes in the world was quickly spiraling into extinction.

However, with multiple agencies pulling together—including the Channel Islands National Park, The Nature Conservancy, The Institute for Wildlife Studies, and others—and with hundreds of volunteers, one of the rarest foxes in the world has exceeded all expectations and is being removed from the Endangered Species List. In fact, its removal is the quickest recovery of a land mammal in the history of the Endangered Species Act, which was established by Congress over 40 years ago.

“We were in fear of losing the island fox,” said Russell Galipeau, superintendent of the Channel Islands National Park since 2003. “Tim Coonan brought me an island fox recovery plan and I knew if we didn’t implement it right away that it was going to be a big challenge to save the fox.”

That was 17 years ago, when it was actually rare to see one of the cinnamoncolored foxes bounding through a campground or nimbly scaling up a spindly fig tree. It was a time when opportunistic, non-native golden eagles ruled the skies, preying upon the three unsuspecting subspecies of island foxes. By 2004 all three subspecies of island foxes at the national park had been added to the Endangered Species List.

“The cooperative conservation effort that occurred was a real role model,” said Tim Coonan, who for 23 years was the lead terrestrial biologist at the Channel Islands National Park, and spearheaded the island fox recovery from 1999 until he retired in 2015. He now heads Friends of the Island Fox, a nonprofit for all things island fox.

“There were actions on the ground immediately, even before the island fox was listed.”

Beginning in 1999 and into the early part of the 21st century, a four-pronged effort ensued that returned an ecological balance to the craggy, volcanic isles. Aggressive captive breeding took place for each subspecies of island fox, because if one subspecies was lost it would be gone forever. Those captive breeding facilities are still standing in the event there’s a distemper outbreak or if some other stressor arises on the chain.

The restoration of bald eagles—extinct from the islands for 50 years due to DDT poisoning—occurred from 2002 to 2006, and allowed the iconic raptors to reestablish historic island territories. Bald eagles eat fish, not the catlike island foxes.

By 2008 the last of the feral pigs were eradicated from Santa Cruz Island, which opened the door for island foxes to flourish across the archipelago. Initially it was thought that Santa Cruz had a carrying capacity of approximately 1,200 to 1,500 island foxes, but estimates from 2015 shows a population infusion of 2,100 animals on the largest, most bio-diverse island off the California coast. Impressive to say the least, considering the persistent drought conditions that have gripped the Golden State the last several years.

Mussel Shoals residents Kathryn Carlson and Ian Stokes tested Coastal View News’ durability by taking it along to New York City for a very soggy Fourth of July. Stokes, a writer, was out east for a new Netflix show called “Iron Fist” that’s filming in Brooklyn. Carlson joined her beau for the holiday, bringing along a copy of the CVN to keep Stokes up to date on current events. The pair watched the Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks show over the Hudson River from the roof of Stokes’ hotel in Brooklyn.
