Johnson appointed to water board

An unexpected shuffle and reshuffle of board seats at the Carpinteria Valley Water District started with the recent resignation of Boardmember Richard Forde and concluded with the Aug. 24 appointment of Shirley Johnson.

In late July, Forde stepped down from the board after moving out of the district.

His decision came too late for the newly vacant seat to be on the November election ballot, making it necessary for his successor to be appointed. Three applicants for the position—Johnson, Terry Oltman and Curtis Thornton—were interviewed at a special meeting held on Aug. 22, at which time the board selected Oltman to take Forde’s seat. Oltman, however, withdrew his name shortly thereafter.

Johnson once again made the case for her appointment at the following meeting. She noted that she has followed local water issues closely for the last several

years and was a close runner up for a board seat in the 2012 election. Through her career as vice president of an international trading corporation, she had gained significant experience in contract negotiations, which she said would serve the district well for the upcoming renegotiation of the Lake Cachuma contract.

Now retired, Johnson said she has the time and the interest to dedicate to the water board. “(Johnson) is not only the obvious choice but a better one,” Jane Benefield told the board during public comment.

She said Johnson is fluent with the issues facing the district and understands complex water delivery and management systems.

A unanimous vote by the board put an end to the question of who would fill the fifth board seat for the next few months, but two of the remaining seats will be up for grabs in the general election.

Longtime boardmember June Van

Wingerden is not seeking reelection this fall. Incumbent Polly Holcombe filed election papers early and stood as the only candidate until the 11th hour when Case Van Wingerden and Steve Bunting both threw their hats in the ring.

June said that she had received a threatening email that day about the board appointment. She noted that though people criticize the board, few residents are willing to step up and give the time and energy necessary to be on the board. The vacant seat drew just a short list of applicants, she lamented.

“I think that the last board member who resigned didn’t take us very seriously,” June said. “And I regret that. And now we’ve come to a situation where we’re forced in a very short amount of time to select somebody … It’s a very intricate system how the water works in Carpinteria. And (Johnson) has really studied it and shown interest, and that’s one of the things that’s necessary for this.”

Pursuit of recycled water continues

The water board voted unanimously on Aug. 24 to move forward with a $60,000 consulting agreement to conduct public outreach and investigate funding sources for a major recycled water project.

Last year, a feasibility study found that Carpinteria could boost its reliable water supply by injecting recycled water into the underground aquifer.

While CVWD further investigates the option, the Carpinteria Sanitary District, a potential project partner, has dedicating equivalent funds to water quality testing necessary for the project.

General Manager Bob McDonald said he was hopeful that the public outreach effort would be simple. “So far, anecdotally, I’ll say that I’ve only heard support for this project,” he said.

A decision on the project is anticipated for the summer of 2017. McDonald said that current efforts by CVWD and the Sanitary District are aimed at compiling “enough good information to make an informed decision when the time comes.”

In other news

• CVWD has joined other south coast water agencies in an effort to secure Table A water, which is special hold-over from the State Water Project. The district stands to acquire up to 1,000 acre feet, and the investigation into its availability will likely cost CVWD about $35,000.

• The board voted to rehabilitate the Carpinteria High School well for up to $120,000. Getting that well into production could prove critical for Carpinteria to get through peak use months in the summer, General Manager Bob McDonald said.

Aliso and Summerland schools get new principal

after more than 20 years of teaching, earning a doctorate in Education leadership from UCsb in 2011 and working as a principal in atascadero, Dr. Michelle Fox comes to aliso and summerland schools with a vision: “My job,” she said in an interview in her office at Aliso School, “is to facilitate and support the staff—they are dedicated and want to do what’s best for the students. This is very important.”

Fox noted that both she and her staff have high expectations for the students they serve. “our curriculum is rigorous, intentional and engaging,” she said, noting that the teachers at aliso and summerland “meet students where they are (academically and emotionally).” sometimes this means extra help in math or reading, and sometimes, Fox said, “this means providing breakfast.”

With students from a variety of backgrounds and family circumstances, Fox and her staff use a Multi-Tiered system of support to foster academic, behavioral and social success. The system addresses the needs of students struggling to meet standards as well as those who benefit from advanced enrichment opportunities.

“The teachers and staff at both aliso and summerland are highly educated and knowledgeable,” Fox said, “and i am getting to know the culture of our schools, building relationships.” Her goal is for kids to “want to come and be at school.”

Fox introduced herself to students at Aliso School’s first assembly last week, letting the children know that she is there for them, and that they can come talk to her if they need to. she also raised some school spirit with the cheer, “Go-oooo lions!” and encouraged students to don “spirit wear” in the school colors each Friday throughout the year ahead.

Friendly competition between classes will motivate academic and athletic performance, Fox said, with an atmosphere of “respect, responsibility and safety” at both aliso and summerland schools.

Engaged in professional development as a reading specialist across the state of California, Fox became interested in the leadership aspects of her position, which led her to pursue a doctoral degree in Education leadership.

Senate passes bill to cap Summerland’s orphan wells

Summerland’s leaking orphaned oil wells are one step closer to a fix this week after SB 900, a bill authored by Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, cleared the Senate on a 31-5 vote. The bill, which was a response to the influx of oil plaguing Summerland Beach, would require that the California State Lands Commission plug very old oil wells in California waters when the original oil company that operated the well is out of business and cannot be held responsible. It will also require an in-depth study of similarly abandoned and unused oil wells along the California coast, which are estimated to number more than 200. Most of the so-called “legacy” wells in California are located along the Summerland and Ellwood beaches.

Summerland Beach’s oil issue has prompted health warnings and beach closures over the past year. The oil is believed to be coming from the Becker Onshore Well, which dates to the 1890s, long before the creation of regulatory agencies and requirements for how to properly cap unused wells.

“These old wells, often called ‘legacy’ wells, represent a legacy we’d frankly rather not have,” said Jackson. “Oil is toxic, it is a carcinogen, and it is unsafe for wildlife.

We don’t want it on our beaches, soiling a place of beauty and economic vitality. To the extent we can prevent having our beaches soiled by it, we should. This bill will allow us to get a better understanding of our state’s old oil wells, and ensure that we have a plan in place to cap them.”

Although the State Lands Commission is in the process of inspecting and assessing the Becker Well, it is still working to secure funding to cap it. SB 900, which now goes to Governor Jerry Brown for approval, would ensure the funding for the Becker Well capping.

Polo Club hosts free college workshop

Dr. Gina La Monica will hold a free college admission and career advisement workshop on Sunday, Sept. 11, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, 2375 Foothill Road. La Monica will address the topic “How To Win Over Admission Counselors With Your Application and Essay,” and then answer questions following her presentation. Refreshments will be served. Suicide Prevention Day observation planned

World Suicide Prevention Day will be observed locally with a Candlelight Vigil on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the foot of Linden Avenue near the beach. Guest speakers, resources and therapists will be there to provide information about suicide prevention. Speakers include First District Supervisor Salud Carbajal, Sarah Adams of the SAFTY program and others. The event is in honor and memory of those who have committed suicide, suicide survivors and is intended to increase sensitivity about suicide and its prevention. Candles, refreshments and an information table will be provided. Participants are invited to share a poem or a remembrance of a love one.

Applications accepted now for Sheriff’s Citizen’s Academy

Applications are now being accepted for the next Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Citizen’s Academy, an eight-week program that begins on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Taught by Community Resource Deputies from the department’s service areas, including Carpinteria, classes will include a voluntary patrol ride-along, active shooter training, use of force, search and seizure law, building searches, force option simulators, arrest and control and firearms. There will also be a tour of the jail, a presentation by Sheriff Bill Brown, Chief Olson and the K-9 Unit.

Classes are held every Wednesday night from 6 to 9 p.m. at various locations throughout Santa Barbara County. The academy is free and only has 30 spots available. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and able to attend all of the sessions in order to participate. Applications must be turned in by Sept. 14. Taste of the Vine raises $75K to fight Diabetes

The 14th annual Taste of the Vine gave over 350 attendees an opportunity to taste some of the best wines, beers and food from around the Central Coast on Aug. 27 at QAD, Inc. in Summerland. The annual event raised more than $75,000 for the William Sansum Diabetes Center through ticket sales, sponsorships and auctions. Diabetes Center Executive Director Ellen Goodstein said, “It exceeded our expectations. It was a hugely successful event. Everyone had a good time and more importantly, they supported an important cause, making a difference in the lives of people struggling with diabetes.”

Trail event to raise funds for local hikes/rides

The Montecito Trails Foundation will hold its annual Fall Barbecue fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event begins with the choice of a hike, a bike ride or a horseback ride in the morning. Bud Girard will lead a Franklin Trail hike that starts at the Carpinteria High School kiosk at 9 a.m. From noon to 1:30 p.m., a barbecue lunch will be served at the home of Hal and Mary Coffin, located at Sheffield and Ortega Hill roads. And from 1 to 3 p.m., there will be music and a live auction at the same location. The cost for members paying by Sept. 14 is $50, or $60 at the event. Non-members are $70. Dear thieves

It’s not that you broke into our little mom and pop store that we have had in Carpinteria for 15 years. It’s not that you robbed every penny in the store, or stole every piece of jewelry and other things that took us time and effort to find and put in our little store. It’s not that you so blatantly violated our sweet little town and our hard-working local employees who love our shop and treat it like it is their home. It’s not that you needed anything you stole. It is not how people make honest livings, by robbing a teeny tiny business, struggling so hard to stay in this cute little town.

It is a look at humanity we wish didn’t exist. It is a time to reflect on people who have no morals or hearts. It is yet another hardship that we owners must face while dealing with a pile of medical bills from a cancer diagnosis. It is all this, and it really hurts.

Lee Ann Enlow

Long-time Carpinterian Lee Ann Enlow, 57, passed away on July 1, 2016 after a short illness. She was a beautiful, talented, creative and very thoughtful person with a wonderful sense of humor.

Some of her favorite times were walking her dogs, Osa and Mollie. She had many close friends, family and acquaintances who will miss her very much. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Michael Enlow. She is survived by her mother, Mary Omweg, her sister, Laura Sargent, and her children, Chad Enlow, Tyler Enlow and Rachel Enlow.

At Lee Ann’s request, no services are planned.

Charles Wesley “Wes” Dohle 9/3/1931 – 5/9/2016

Charles Wesley “Wes” Dohle, 84, died May 9, 2016, of cancer. He was in hospice care at The Oak Cottage in Santa Barbara, where he died peacefully in his sleep.

Wes was a lifelong Californian, the youngest of three children born in Los Angeles, Calif. to Decima and Charles Dohle. He was raised in the San Gabriel Valley. He graduated from Mark Keppel High School in Monterey Park and later continued his studies at Cal Poly Pomona.

Wes was a veteran. He first served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was called to active duty during the Korean conflict.

He was stationed first at the Naval Air Station North Island, Coronado and then was deployed to Guam.

In 1953, fresh out of the Navy, Wes went to work as a die repairman at Alcoa Aluminum in Bell, Calif. He was, for many years, a respected and well-liked supervisor in Alcoa’s extrusion division.

In 1987, after more than 33 years with Alcoa, Wes retired and moved from Alhambra to what had been his weekend home in Carpinteria.

For 28 years, Wes’ tall, lanky frame and friendly smile were a familiar sight to many Carpinterians. Wes served on the Board of Directors of Silver Sands Village mobile home park, where he made his home. He would often be seen flying kites on the beach at the end of Ash Avenue, riding his bike through the State Park, or proudly squiring his children and grandchildren around town to festivals and his favorite local restaurants.

Wes was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Colleen and his youngest son, Kevin, in 1988.

Wes is survived by his children Leslie, Laurie, Patricia, David and Dale; his sister Roberta; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and his companion of many years, Donna.

In keeping with his wishes, there was no funeral and interment was private.

Wes’ family enjoyed an informal time of reminiscing on Memorial Day weekend, a private day of remembrance at his sister’s home in Carpinteria.

Marion Frances Fortunato 3/20/1926 – 8/20/2016

Marion Frances Loftus Fortunato was born on March 20, 1926 in Los Angeles, Calif. She was the eldest daughter of Michael J Loftus DC and Anna Martin Loftus, and beloved older sister to her “baby brother” Michael J Loftus. She spent her childhood days in California, from Los Angeles and Pasadena, all the way up to San Francisco. She always had a love for architecture, and in her youth would admire the surrounding buildings during her breaks from her job in Downtown LA at Barker Brothers Furniture.

Ever stylish and graceful, she always loved to dance. It would be while selling tickets to a YLI dance in Ventura, a Catholic Women’s Organization, where she would meet her future husband after he was discharged from the Navy.

Frank James Fortunato swept Marion off her feet, and the couple would clear dance floors with their ballroom dancing, and in particular, the jitterbug.

They married on Oct. 9,1947 at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Ojai. Together they moved to Highland Park, Ill. and started a family.

Family and the California springtime kept calling them back. They moved to Santa Barbara in 1951 and eventually bought their first home in Carpinteria in 1955. They loved to entertain friends and family, and the smell of homemade Italian food wafted through the Fortunato household on any given Sunday

afternoon for the family supper. Marion loved to garden, and their backyard was always lush and blooming, especially with roses, which she tended to lovingly.

Holidays filled the home with sparkling decorations and later with grandchildren who brought Marion immeasurable joy.

Marion also collected first day cover US stamps and shared many hours with her grandchildren reviewing and discussing her collection. Her love of craft and devotion showed in the clothing she sewed for her daughters, and the Raggedy Ann dolls she lovingly made for her granddaughters.

Always thoughtful and generous in her service to others, Marion was an active volunteer at the schools her children attended, St Joseph’s Parish and Los Chiquitos, a Carpinteria auxiliary.

In later years she took up lawn bowling, which became a favorite activity when she wasn’t traveling. The world excited her, in particular, Ireland and Australia, and her adventurous and gracious spirit took her across the globe.

In 2009 Marion moved to Valle Verde Retirement Community in Santa Barbara and joined The San Roque Catholic Parish of Santa Barbara. She met many new friends and reconnected with friends separated over time.

Marion is survived by her brother Michael J Loftus. She is also survived by her children Cathy Fortunato, Teressa Van Wingerden, Frank Fortunato (Debbie), Jeanne Pettit (Dennis) and Leo Fortunato (Marian); her grandchildren Robert Van Wingerden, Christopher Pettit, Jennifer Van Wingerden Murray (Garth), Lisa Pettit Howard (Jacob), Amy Fortunato, Karen Fortunato, Justin Fortunato and Katie Fortunato; and her great-grandchildren Marie Howard, Rylee Howard, Nolan Howard and Éowyn Murray.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank J Fortunato, her father Michael J Loftus DC, her mother Anna Martin Loftus, her son-in-law Hank Van Wingerden, and her grandson Paul Van Wingerden.

A Mass was held on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at San Roque Catholic Parish in Santa Barbara, followed by a graveside service at Carpinteria Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, her family is asking that donations be made in her name to: Monastery of Poor Clares, 215 E. Los Olivos St., Santa Barbara, CA 93105. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Welch-Ryce-Haider of Santa Barbara.

On Aug. 8 at about 5:00 a.m., deputies were dispatched to a pizzeria on Carpinteria Avenue to investigate an alarm.

Upon arrival, deputies noticed the office door on the east side of the building had signs of forced entry. Thieves had been unable to gain entry, but there was significant damage around the door latch and deadbolt. The owner arrived at 5:30 a.m., looked at the damage and said he would have it fixed.

Suspected thieves/ meth found

On Aug. 19 at 2:36 a.m., a deputy on uniformed patrol driving a marked Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s vehicle noticed a man and woman standing at the back of a parked vehicle at the intersection of Palmetto and Jacaranda ways. When the deputy illuminated the people with his vehicle spotlight, they began walking north on Palmetto Way. It appeared that they were tampering with the hatch on the vehicle they were standing by when the deputy first spotted them, he reported.

Based on numerous thefts from vehicles in the area and the fact that the man and woman were wearing dark, heavy clothing that was not suited to the warm weather, the deputy and his partner detained them and had them lean against the hood of the patrol vehicle. When the deputies asked the man if they could search him for anything illegal, he stated that he was on Ventura County probation with “unrestricted search terms.”

With three warrants for the man’s arrest in Ventura County, deputies took him into custody. One of the deputies then explained to the woman that she was being detained, not arrested, but that she should tell deputies if she had anything illegal on her person. The woman “hesitated and eventually stated she did not (have anything illegal),” the deputy reported.

Asked once again if she had anything illegal, the woman stated that she had a pipe and a lighter in her bra. A deputy un-cuffed her left hand, and the woman reached into her bra and pulled out a “used glass methamphetamine smoking pipe wrapped in a white paper towel.” Deputies called a K9 unit after discovering the pipe that the woman had, and a search revealed .8 grams of suspected methamphetamine, a second glass methamphetamine smoking pipe and a syringe loaded with suspected

methamphetamine.

The man and woman were transported to Santa Barbara County Jail and booked.

Five bindles

On Aug. 20 at approximately 12:45 p.m., a uniformed Sheriff’s deputy in a marked patrol vehicle observed a man driving a black SUV exit the parking lot of a fast food restaurant on Casitas Pass Road. The man did not stop his vehicle before crossing the sidewalk, a violation of city code. As the vehicle proceeded north on Casitas Pass Road, the deputy noticed a “load modified exhaust,” a violation of vehicle code. The deputy conducted a traffic enforcement stop at the intersection of Via Real and Vallecito Road. Asked for proof of insurance and registration, the man looked through his vehicle but could not find the documents.

A second deputy arrived, and the deputy who conducted the traffic stop asked the driver of the SUV to step out of the car. When the man got out of the car, the deputy observed him place his wallet in the driver’s door map pocket. The deputy then searched the man’s vehicle for the insurance and registration papers.

While searching, the deputy noticed an open Marlboro cigarette box with a small plastic baggie sticking out. Based on his “training and experience,” the deputy reported, he was “familiar with narcotic users placing small baggies containing narcotics inside cigarette boxes to conceal the narcotics.” The deputy stated that the baggie contained a small amount of suspected methamphetamine. He then noticed a second Marlboro box “which also contained a small bindle of suspected methamphetamine.”

Upon searching the driver’s wallet, the deputy found three tightly folded $1 bills “containing between .9 to 1.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine.” Placing the man in handcuffs the deputy searched the man and found $300 in large denominations in one of the man’s pockets and $40 in smaller denominations in another.

“I know based on my training and experience narcotics traffickers use the technique of placing different denominations in different pockets to aid in quicker narcotics transactions,” the deputy reported.

As the man was being booked at Santa Barbara County Jail, the suspect told the officer that the methamphetamine inside his wallet was for personal use only and the rest belonged to a friend.

On Aug. 20 at 11:19 a.m. a deputy was dispatched to a bank on Carpinteria Avenue because a woman refused to leave the premises. Bank tellers had received multiple complaints from other customers and employees about the woman’s odor. The deputy asked the woman to go outside with him, where he spoke with her and determined that she was in violation of code 602 (trespassing). He issued the woman a citation and photographed her and her property. The deputy noted, “(Name withheld) has a long history in the city of Carpinteria of creating disturbances and committing violations of the law … the city has requested that these incidents be documented and photographed.”

On Aug. 23 at approximately 6:45 a.m., a man knocked on the front door of the Sheriff’s sub-station in Carpinteria “rambling about needing to speak with the chief of police because he needed protection from the FBI,” a deputy reported.

The man also said he and his family were in danger. The deputy recognized the man from “previous narcotics related contacts,” and noted that the man’s “pu-

pils were dilated to approximately 5 mm in bright daylight, his speech was slow and irrational and he had heroin residue and burn marks on all of his fingertips.”

The man was arrested, and a urine sample “tested presumptive positive for Morphine, methamphetamine and THC. (Name withheld) admitted to smoking heroin and methamphetamine within the past 24 hours.”

Another deputy searched the man’s vehicle, parked on Carpinteria Avenue, and “observed a rolled up dollar bill with burn marks lying on the passenger side floor board (often used to inhale smoke from burning heroin and/or prescription pills).” A backpack in the car contained “approximately 2.6 grams of heroin, tin foil with heroin residue and packaging containing heroin residue,” the deputy reported. The man was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail where he was booked on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

“Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”

The 50th Star Trek TV anniversary will be marked this weekend with a screening of “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. at Plaza Playhouse Theater, 4916 Carpinteria Ave. This 1982 film turns up a character first seen in the 1966 debut season of the TV show: Ricardo Montalban as Khan, a genetically engineered human who turns into a maniacal villain bent on destroying Capt. Kirk (William Shatner) and the Enterprise. Rated PG, the film will be shown with widescreen digital projection, and is the re-mastered “director’s cut” edition. A raffle will precede the screening, and audience members will have a chance to win the entire first season of the series on DVD, plus the classic 1968 paperback book, “The Making of Star Trek”—an out of print collector’s item. Community garden promises fresh, healthy bounty

if the best tasting fruits and veggies are the ones we grow ourselves, Carpinterians’ mouths can start watering now in anticipation of the 5th Street community garden opening next spring. the 2/3-acre project will have 100 planters available to locals who want to reap what they sow.

Carpinteria parks and recreation Director Matt roberts expects to break ground by the end of the year on the $350,000 grant-funded garden project.

Highlights of the plans include a renovated historic railroad building that will contain a bathroom, office space and kitchen facilities, 50 fruit trees, outdoor classroom space and shaded picnic areas. the primary focus, of course, will be the garden planters. thirty-two of the 5-foot by 10-foot planters will be raised 27 inches above ground for those who have difficulty stooping. The other 68 will have 12-inch concrete sides. planters will be filled with agricultural quality soil and lined with hardware cloth to prevent gopher intrusions. the fee to rent a planter will be minimal and based on operating costs. roberts said that he is hesitant to provide a number, but guesses that at $6 to $10 a month, the revenue should cover the cost of water and electricity. a steering committee will be formed soon to decide on garden policies, such as rental fees and how to address the issue of demand for planters exceeding supply. if that’s the case, roberts said he guesses there will be a lottery among

applicants. “Hopefully we can do it all in a real Mayberry sort of way,” he said. plans for the garden, which will occupy most of the block between Holly avenue and elm Street on the north side of the railroad tracks, include several unique elements. there will be a pair of outdoor sinks that drain to a bioswale with native plants. the fruit produced by the citrus, apple, persimmon and cherimoya trees will be available to garden members. owl and bat boxes will be installed along one edge of the property to provide some biological pest control. there will also be compost bins, solar panels on the office building and a 1,000-gallon rain barrel to catch rain runoff. a new decomposed granite sidewalk will be constructed along 5th Street, and roberts hopes that the garden ultimately will tie into a few other projects in the city’s long-range plans. the feasibility of a railroad undercrossing at Holly avenue is being researched, as well as a path and pedestrian bridge over franklin Creek to safely connect beach neighborhood children with aliso School. another community garden is planned for construction on the former Whitney property near Casitas pass road and Highway 101. that project is a mitigation measure for the conversation of agricultural land in the Linden/Casitas project that Caltrans is about to begin. a part-time community garden coordinator position will also be paid for with a portion of the $538,000 Caltrans must spend to balance the loss of ag land.

mission possible barbara dunlap Since Beth Schmohr and her husband moved to Carpinteria in 2008, she’s enriched the community in countless ways, especially in the field of art.

“Beth is a powerhouse who has done so much for Rotary, Woman’s Club and the Arts Center,” said Woman’s Club President Marybeth Carty. “She’s an accomplished artist who shows her work, shares it with the community and teaches kids classes as well.”

Here’s how (and why) Schmohr volunteers in Carpinteria: Why do you feel it’s important to volunteer?

To me, (volunteering) is the opportunity to work for a cause, work together with others for that cause and see the cause benefit.

How does it enrich your life?

I get to work with amazing people, and together we help brighten someone’s day. I feel really blessed that I can use my passion for art and be useful in the community.

Why did you choose to volunteer at the Carpinteria Arts Center?

I searched out the Arts Center when we moved to Carpinteria. It immediately felt like a good fit for me. The summer programs for children especially warm my heart. It’s also a good place for local artists to show their work and for everyone to see and experience art.

What are your volunteer duties for the Carpinteria Arts Center?

I’m a member of the Gallery Committee, which runs the ingatherings for the art shows and organizes the receptions. We also help with the annual

Art-niture fundraiser that happens every August. This year marked my sixth year to participate and donate a piece to the event. It helps support programs such as Children’s Art by the Sea, music, film and other community events.

The art center also partners with MTD and Carpinteria Beautiful to paint the local bus benches around town. It’s one of my most fun paint days.

Why do you volunteer at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club?

The Woman’s Club was another first place to go for me. It gave me the chance to meet women I may never have met. I have many a dear friend because of the organization.

What are your duties at the Woman’s Club?

I love volunteering for the annual Student Art Contest in May. Pieces of children’s art are collected from local schools; the pieces are juried and monetary awards are given. This event has grown over the past five years, and we now partner with the Arts Center for a two-week student show in the gallery. When the awards are given, the smiles on the young people’s faces are priceless. It’s very important to me that art is experienced in every child’s life.

Why do you enjoy volunteering at Rotary?

I first liked the fact there was a weekly speaker, and I was learning about events and organizations around the area. I then realized it was more: Rotary is all about serving the community and world needs.

It has become my family of sorts.

What are your volunteer duties at Rotary Club?

I’ve served on the board in different positions from international representative to club social director. however, volunteering with the annual Casino Night is my passion. It mixes art installation with “fun” raising that supports the Tomol Interpretive Play Area, community projects and end Polio now. our entire club is there, working together. I like knowing I’ve been a “pin dot” partner in helping eradicate polio.

UPS Rob hangs up the brown uniform

After 27 years of working as a UPS driver, Rob Johnson has delivered his last package and turned in the keys to his delivery truck.

Johnson started working with UPS in 1989 when he was 30 years old. Although he had earned a degree in business economics and tried his hand at accounting, he quickly found that he hated working inside. Johnson was drawn to the idea of work that involved traveling, interacting with a diverse group of customers, and working with his hands. “I thought it sounded like a pretty good gig!” he reflected.

When Johnson applied at the Ventura UPS center, he was met with a strange scene. “As I was walking up, a guy passed by me shouting, ‘I don’t wanna do this!’

Someone working at the center turned to me and said, ‘He’s leaving. Do you want the job?’” Johnson accepted the position on the spot. “It was that easy! They told me that Santa Barbara needed drivers, so I became one immediately.”

Johnson began as a utility driver.

“When you start out, you go wherever they tell you.” Some days, Johnson was assigned easy routes through pleasant residential areas. Other days, he found himself navigating the busy, narrow roads that wind through Refugio Canyon or San Marcos Pass. Johnson explained that the holiday season was particularly unpredictable, saying, “During Christmas, there are as many as 40 or 50 different routes that utility drivers can be assigned to.”

The first consistent route that Johnson worked was in downtown Santa Barbara.

“It was fun but very difficult. There are too many people and not enough parking spots.” After three years there, he took over a route in Goleta. Five years later, he accepted his final—and favorite—route as one of four drivers in Carpinteria.

“The beauty of Carp is that the roads are wide and flat. My route was golden,” he recalled fondly.

Despite working a great route, Johnson explained that UPS work is physically demanding. “I’d usually be handling 200 or 300 boxes every day. That can really wear on you.” He also explained that the work is more dangerous than people might expect. “If you don’t watch yourself, you’ll be tripping over sprinklers, bumping your head on low arches, busting your knuckles on fence posts…” he paused, “And then there’s dogs. Dogs are scary.”

Longtime UPS driver Rob Johnson says he will miss all the friends he’s made in Carpinteria over the years.

Thankfully, Johnson reported that his only notable injuries on the job were three dog bites and an injured knee.

The physical demands of Johnson’s work factored into his decision to retire from UPS driving. “I’m glad to retire now while I’m still young enough to change gears and preserve my body.”

He now plans to work as a pool cleaner. “I used to work as a scuba instructor, and I’ve always loved the water. Pool cleaning seems like a nice job that will let me keep working outside.” He looks forward to working a lighter schedule so that he can spend more time with his wife and two teenaged sons at their home in Ventura.

While Johnson is excited for the future, he will miss the friends he made along his delivery route. “One of the great things about working in delivery is that you’re allowed into the lives of people you would never meet otherwise,” he explained. “By far, the best part of my job was the people that it allowed me to meet.”

Getting and keeping Carpinteria fit, Part III

BY ALONZO OROZCO Options abound for Carpinterians in search of local fitness venues, and this week Coastal View News presents its final installment of the “Getting and keeping Carpinteria fit” series. On the outskirts of town, one picturesque locale makes the news for hosting weddings of celebrities and royalty. The other is located near downtown in Lavender Court—a small, intimate studio where one can get personalized care.

Although Red Chair Studio Pilates at the Beach is located just a couple blocks away from downtown Carpinteria, it may be one of the city’s best kept secrets.

“What I do mostly is teach my private clients here; I either teach private duets and/ or three people,” said owner Leanna Doyle-Martin, who has leased the small space at Lavender Court since 2011.

While studying dance at Cal State Long Beach in 1982, Doyle-Martin discovered Pilates as a form of conditioning, injury prevention and rehabilitation. But the studio owner, who also leads yoga classes at nearby Turbo Fit, didn’t begin formal training in the field until around 1997. Then, in 2000, she teamed up with Beach Club Athletics Inc. on Padaro Lane, discovering a place where she could develop her craft. Seven years later, she opened Red Chair Studio in Summerland.

Doyle-Martin, who has studied Pilates in New York, as well as in California over the years, has gravitated toward the classical approach to the discipline. In fact, she still owns the red chair apparatus that she obtained many years ago from the line of products developed by founder Joseph Pilates.

Even though Doyle-Martin uses only traditional Gratz Pilates equipment, she has branched out to other fields of personal well-being. Earning her designation as a Certified Health Coach for the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Doyle-Martin has now become more involved in the dietary needs of the community. “I really did (the training) for myself and my class, so I could put that into play with the rest of what being fit meant,” explained Doyle-Martin, who has been instructing some clients for nearly 20 years.

Head tennis professional Lance Kronberg has been teaching the sport for 20 years at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, but since 2011 he has expanded the curriculum at the facility that opened strictly for polo over a century ago. In addition to the eight tennis courts, two swimming pools and tennis clubhouse that were built in the 1970s, the club now includes a full gym complete with stair climbers, free weights and treadmills, which are just some of the amenities enveloped by a huge, airy tent.

“We’re opening a program up to non-members, and I’m looking forward to building this into one of the places where locals can come and get a workout in the fresh air under the sycamore trees,” said Kronberg, who was twice an All-American athlete while playing on a state championship team at SBCC. One of the key programs offered for all ages at the site is circuit training, which involves a course set up in the great outdoors. “We hit all the areas of your body, whether you’re a tennis player or swimmer or someone who likes to go walking three days a week. (The training) makes your body strong in the abs and core,” explained Kronberg. A certified trainer, Kronberg has worked under the tutelage of Dr. Marcus Elliott, M.D., founder of the P-3 Peak Performance project that concentrates on the strengths and weaknesses of pro athletes.

Well into its second century, there’s good reason to believe that the club will help build even a stronger base for the future.

Carpinteria 5-year-old wins Junior Foot Roper Champion buckle

brayden Real, who just turned 5, became the 2016 Junior Foot Roper Champion at the kids day rodeo for ages 7 and under at the Ventura County Fair. tasked with roping a calf out of the shoot by its feet, Real managed the feat in a record 1.4 seconds. because he only caught one foot, Real gained a 5 second penalty for an overall time of 6.4 seconds, still taking the lead by at least 2 seconds. the young cowboy won his first belt buckle. Although this was his first year competing in the rodeo challenge, he competed in the mutton busting event at the Santa barbara Fiesta Rodeo both this year and last. Real has won the best dressed Cowboy award both years, and this year he took fourth place in mutton busting.

CHS girls volleyball aims to ace the competiton

Although the Carpinteria High School Girls Volleyball Team was swept at Nordhoff last week in their season opener, coach Dino Garcia has high expectations for the Warriors this season. “We’re competing for first place in the (Frontier) league. The amount of talent we have on the court here at Carpinteria High School this year is not to be underrated,” said Garcia.

Carpinteria will have a week to get it right this time when the school hosts Hueneme on Sept. 6. “They let the (first) game slip out of their finger tips,” explained Garcia of the non-conference loss against the Rangers. “I mean they were in control all the way through, but it looked like they got a little nervous.” With several experienced players returning to this year’s team, nerves should not be a factor as the season progresses.

Middle blocker and co-captain Gabi Rigonati returns for her senior year. “She has the greatest attitude. She’s just hungry for volleyball, in the morning and in the evening,” said Garcia.

Opposite hitter and co-captain Monique Sanchez also returns for her senior season. “She’s (Sanchez) our opposite, left-handed, lethal player—very aggressive, very intelligent on the court,” Garcia said. Another key player will be yet another senior, outside hitter Corina Porter, whom Garcia describes as one of the team’s “go to” hitters.

With a couple of good club players and an experienced squad, Bishop Diego appears to be one of the teams to beat in this year’s Frontier League. “I’m really excited about this season coming up,” said Garcia, and with an experienced and hungry team on the court, he has good reason to be.

Renaud’s bakery to rise in Carpinteria

Affordable fresh Italian food should be emerging from a new kitchen at 901 Linden Ave. early this fall. Luis “Guicho” Alvarez, owner of the new eatery that is preparing to open in the former Beach Bowls location, said that meals will be gourmet quality but affordably priced. The menu will include salads, sandwiches, pastas and desserts ranging from $6 to $12.

Alvarez lives in San Clemente where he owns two other Guichos locations. The concept and menu there are very similar to what Carpinterians can expect, with fresh ingredients as the foundation of the meals. The meatballs, sausage and dressing will all be handmade onsite, and Alvarez hopes to secure a beer and wine license soon.

Orders will be placed at the counter, and though the emphasis is on to-go meals, there will also be counter space and tables inside and out.

Alvarez’s in-laws have owned a home in Carpinteria for 45 years, which he and his family often visit. He said he was attracted to Carpinteria for a third location of Guichos, because the small town feels like San Clemente 30 years ago. Contractors are installing a full kitchen now, and Alvarez hopes to open the doors in late September or early October. See guichos.com for menu details.

Longtime fine art and antiques dealer Carolina Pierpont has moved Mediterranee, her gallery showroom for antiques, arts and gifts, to the Carpinteria Business Park, aka The Row. To mark the occasion, a grand opening will be held on Saturday, Sept.

17 from 4 to 8 p.m. at 4193 #6 Carpinteria Ave. The opening will include live music, food and fun.

Mediterranee currently is hosting a show featuring several local artists. Works by Larry Powell, Laurie MacMillan, Sally Hamilton, Pamela Hill-Enticknap, Ray Cuevas, Marcia Morehart, Karen McLean-McGaw and Kris Buck are hanging in the showroom.

Pierpont largely does business with interior decorators, architects and private collectors, and also enjoys a burgeoning online business. Formerly located near the railroad tracks on Maple Avenue, the showroom is now in a larger, more accessible space. Pierpont noted that she is thrilled to be located in an up-and-coming commercial district that includes Chocolats du Calibressan, Carpinteria Wine Company, The Juice Ranch, BrewLAB and The Apiary Ciderworks & Meadery. “My customers love it,” said Pierpont. “Plus with reduced overhead I am able to pass on savings to my clients.”

Guichos preps for fall opening

The easy-to-overlook corner of Holly and Carpinteria avenues will soon be much harder to ignore. Popular French bakery Renaud’s Patisserie & Bistro just announced plans to occupy the first floor of a two-story, mixed-use building approved by the city in 2014 for the now-vacant lot. M3 Multifamily, an apartment investment and management firm currently headquartered in downtown Santa Barbara, will occupy the second floor.

Indoor and outdoor seating space are planned for the future eatery, and baked goods will be scratch made on-premises daily. Restaurant owner Renaud Gonthier said, “Renaud’s Patisserie has been my lifelong dream and I am excited to expand our operations to the beautiful city of Carpinteria, where I live.”

Construction plans are in progress now, and M3, the developer, intends to break ground on the project later this year. Renaud’s anticipates opening for business in early 2018. The restaurant will occupy approximately 3,000 square feet of the approximately 7,000-square-foot building.

Gonthier opened his first bakery in the Loreto Plaza Center on upper State Street in January 2008. next he opened a downtown location in Arlington Plaza in October 2009. Since then, Renaud’s has expanded into several Gelson’s Markets throughout Southern California as a bakery and retail outlet.

M3 Partners Jon Martin and John Mosby said they are thrilled to bring Renaud’s to Carpinteria. “Short of flying to Paris, we don’t think you can find higher quality French bakery products,” they stated in a press release. “Having a bakery of this caliber in Carpinteria is a big win for our community.”

M3 Multifamily was founded in 2008, and the partners of M3 have lived in Carpinteria/Santa Barbara for more than 25 years and have been in the real estate development, investment and management business since the mid-1980’s.

Before the earthmovers arrived, the Hales’ house was sawed into two pieces and moved to 648 Maple Ave. In the move, the fireplace and chimney were destroyed, as well as the french doors that opened to the front porch. years later, Carpinteria Girls Club (now Girls inc.) bought the home and remodeled it to provide a safe and positive place for local girls to spend their free time. the local club moved into its current facility in 1994, selling the old Hales house and settling into its more spacious clubhouse on foothill road.

members of the playa del sur 4-h steer team were recognized recently for their topnotch animal husbandry at the santa barbara County Cattlemen’s Annual Carcass Award dinner in Lompoc. the dinner, which honors santa barbara County Fair exhibitors, celebrated Jasmyn Arroyo, Jose Lemus and max brown for raising Choice level beef, and the three were awarded Carcass of merit awards. the Wood-Claeyssens Foundation purchased all of playa del sur’s steers at the County Fair auction and donated them to the santa barbara County Foodbank. Arroyo said, “We are happy that we raise quality beef that is given to help fight hunger in our community.”

Amber and Ashley Watkins are carrying on the family tradition of raising high quality beef. the sisters, who are members of the mira monte 4-h, brought home four belt buckle trophies between them at this year’s Ventura County Fair. twelve-year-old Amber and her 1,352-pound steer won Grand Champion for 4-h market steer, and also competed against all the steers at the fair, winning Grand Champion overall. in addition, Amber took first place in Junior 4-H Showmanship Steer, then took third place in the Round Robin. Ashley and her steer, boots, won Reserve Champion for 4-h market steer and placed second in Junior 4-h showmanship.

Morning Rotary learns about epic drought

bob mcdonald, Carpinteria Valley Water district General manager, stopped by the morning Rotary recently to share his knowledge and outlook on the current drought and Carpinteria’s future water supplies. California is currently experiencing an unprecedented drought, both in terms of dryness and duration. From 2012 to 2016, the state has suffered the driest five-year period in the last 100 years. mcdonald told the club that Carpinteria’s supply for 2016 is secure, but that future years may require purchase of additional water from the state or other resources. According to mcdonald, as a source of water for the Carpinteria Valley, Lake Cachuma is essentially gone, with only about 5,000 acre-feet of water for the entire south coast. however, mcdonald noted that conservation of water is actually a source of supply for CVWd, and that a 20 percent cutback in usage creates, or saves, approximately 500 to 600 AF of water per year. Additionally, CVWd is exploring recycled water projects in order to prevent the waste of valuable water and provide a strong local, drought resistant and reliable supply of water into the future.

After school program comes to the Arts Center

Local artist rebecca Stebbins will lead After School At The Arts Center, a Tuesday afternoon program designed for children ages 8 to 14. Students will develop their art skills and learn new techniques in a variety of media including pencil, crayon, marker, charcoal, pastels, paint, clay, paper maché, collage and fabric. Classes will be held over 11 Tuesdays between Sept. 13 and Nov. 22 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The price is $165 for members and $181.50 for non-members. Tuition assistance is available. Beamish to teach ocean writing

Improv workshops kick off at the Plaza

Improv has been gaining popularity across the country, most recently highlighted in the movie “Don’t Think Twice.” As part of this movement, plaza playhouse Theater is hosting two Improv Workshops, including one specifically for beginners. The workshop for veterans will be held on Tuesdays from Sept. 6 through oct. 25, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.. The Beginners Course will run on Saturdays from Sept. 10 through oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to noon. Andrea Delgado, who may be familiar to CVN readers for her many newsworthy accomplishments, has notched another: an eight-week trip to Santiago, Chile where the Harvard pre-med student shadowed doctors, residents and medical students, observing surgeries, volunteering in the local community and learning about Chile’s health system and culture.

The 2013 Carpinteria High School graduate, who was Salutatorian and Junior Carpinterian of the Year, is a product of Girls Inc., where her involvement started at age 5. She credits Girls Inc. with boosting her self-confidence, goal setting skills, physical fitness and mental strength to help her get where she is today. Delgado was selected as a 2012 Girls Inc. National Scholar in her junior year, and received a $15,000 college scholarship.

Now in her senior year at Harvard University, Delgado is working toward her bachelor’s degree in history and science with a minor in psychology.

During her time in Santiago this summer, Delgado sat in on primary care appointments, examined patients, scrubbed in to observe surgeries, and performed rural home visits. She also did community service with Teletón, an organization that began in Chile to provide physical therapy to children with neuromuscular deficits.

Seven steps to write a book CVN

the write praCtiCe jOe BuNtiNg Seriously though, wouldn’t it be great to write a book? To see your name on that glossy cover, to flip the pages filled with words you’ve written, to be able to tell your friends, “I’m an author.”

How do you write a book?

The hard truth is that while there are certainly many joys of writing, it can also be an incredibly boring, frustrating and even embarrassing process. I regularly think while writing, “How could I be this stupid? How could writing a single paragraph be this hard?”

And yet, if you’re like me, hearing that writing a book will be a long, difficult journey won’t stop you from wanting to write one. Thus, here are eight (tongue-half-in-cheek) steps to writing a book:

“The Bean Trees”

In 2010, the world followed the harrowing tale of 33 Chilean miners trapped underground in a collapsed mine for 69 days. The interminable wait and touching rescue left a mark on millions of hearts and minds around the globe. But the saga of the miners’ experience under thousands of feet of rock remained untold until Hector Tobar’s “Deep Down Dark” was published in 2014. Tobar, a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist, received exclusive access to the miners and their tales for the book that will be discussed by the Carpinteria Library Book Club on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the library, 5141 Carpinteria Ave. Anyone interested in reading and sharing their thoughts on the book with others is welcome to attend. 1. Start!

As Mary Poppins says, “Well begun is half done.” If you want to write a book, write the first chapter. See if you can do it in one day. It may not be perfect, and you may not keep any of it in your final draft, but you will have begun.

2. Read books similar to yours

“If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have time (or the tools) to write,” says Stephen King. Reading titles similar to yours is the best thing to help you write a good book. Go to the library or hit up Amazon.com and get five books similar to the one you’re writing. When you’re not writing, turn off the TV and read. Your future readers will thank you for it.

3. Suffer

At some point in every writing project, I have a breakdown. I no longer want to write the book. I no longer want to write at all. Forever. After having this experience five or six times, I realized “the breakdown” always comes right before a breakthrough. In fact, breakdowns are a sign you’re almost finished. Push through the suffering and keep writing. You’ll have a finished book soon.

4. Get up at 5 a.m. or write till 2 a.m.

My first book took 550 hours to write. Yours might take longer. If you don’t schedule time into your day to write, your book won’t get written.

Many writers find that the best times for them to write are either early in the morning or late at night, but honestly, it matters less when you write and more that you write every day. If you have a day job and are only able to write two hours a day, it will take 275 days to get to 550 hours. When that alarm goes off at 5 a.m., just think of how good it will feel to have your finished book in your hands.

5. Get to know other writers

One of the best ways to motivate yourself through the hard parts of writing a book is to get the support of other writers. If you don’t have any friends who have written a book, reach out to a local writers’ group or join an online writing group (I host one through thewritepractice.com that you can check out).

6. Celebrate your first draft

When you finish your first draft, throw yourself a party. Go out to your favorite restaurant with a group of your closest friends. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done. But you’re not finished! First drafts are almost always terrible. You still have a lot of work to do.

7. Work on drafts two and three

There’s a writer’s proverb that says, “All good writing is rewriting.” It’s completely true.

Most professional writers write three drafts of their books, if not more. Here’s a good resource on how to know when your book is finished.

After you finish your book, start the next one.

The unfortunate truth is most first books aren’t published and even if yours is, it’s unlikely you’ll earn a full-time living from it. If you want a career as a writer, you’ll have to write several more.

Fortunately, writing books is addictive. Don’t stop. The very next day after you finish your first book, start on the second one.

The best writers practice, whether they’re international bestsellers or just getting started. Practice is hard.

It’s stretching. You feel sore after you practice. And yet it’s the only way to get better.

The best writers, the best humans, are never finished practicing. They are always pressing into discomfort. They’re always trying to perform better than the last time.

New parents Gaea and Jason Verneris welcomed Bayzil Rae Verneris to the world on Aug. 25, 2016 at 3:43 a.m. at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. The baby girl weighed in at 8 pounds 1 ounce and measured 19 ¾ inches long.

Delilah Rose Culver

Chris and Stephanie Culver of Ventura welcomed daughter Delilah Rose Culver on July 8. The new baby joins big brother Evan and big sister Serena. Born in Ventura, Delilah weighed 9 pounds 4 ounces and was 19 ½ inches long. Grandparents are Tina Culver and Dennis Culver, both of Carpinteria.

Moores fiesta to celebrate 50 years

Dianne and Terry Moore, along with close family and friends (and a copy of Coastal View News), celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Cabo San Lucas.

Married Aug. 6, 1966, at St. Joseph’s Church in Carpinteria, the Moores met while Terry was stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Very active in their community, both volunteer for HELP of Carpinteria, and Terry serves on the board. The Moores have two children, Lynn and Chris, and four grandchildren: Nicholas, Ryder, Gage and Michael. The Cabo trip was full of adventure as they ziplined across the desert, rode horses along the Pacific Ocean, and snorkeled off Santa Maria Beach. The trip also included lots of shopping, local cuisine, and, of course, nightlife.

Carol Kutzner, former Spanish teacher at Carpinteria Junior High School now living in North Carolina, brought a copy of CVN on her tour of the Great Lakes.

The largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth, containing 21 percent of the world’s surface freshwater by volume, the Great Lakes are often called inland seas. For the Michigan-born Kutzner, the tour of the lakes meant a great deal. She intends to visit Carpinteria in August, when she can get her Coastal View News hot off the press.
