Girls Inc. of Carpinteria will host An Evening in Bloom, its largest annual fundraiser––an elegant evening of dinner, dancing and beautiful orchids, on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at Westerlay Orchids. Shaw to kick off council campaign

Carpinteria Vice Mayor Fred Shaw will launch his campaign for re-election to the Carpinteria City Council with a kick-off party on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. at 5529 Calle Arena. Old is new for 2016 Avofest design

Most California Avocado Festival posters go from imagination, to computer, to poster. This year’s poster winner, Nancy Bingham, however, took her design from imagination, to pencil, to nine rounds of hand-cut wood blocks, to paper, to computer, to poster. The exhaustive process took a month to complete, but the end product is an art piece well worth the effort.

Bingham launched her young art career after retiring from NASA two years ago. She’d work in the aerospace industry as a design engineer then a senior executive for 24 years. When she, her husband and their two golden retrievers moved from Mountain View, Calif. to Santa Barbara, she enrolled in printmaking courses at Santa Barbara City College. Under the tutelage of Stephanie Dotson, Bingham learned the reduction woodcut technique that she used to make her poster entry.

Bingham described the age-old process as puzzle-like, which appeals to her engineer’s mind. Most reduction woodcuts utilize four or five colors, but Bingham raised the complexity bar by integrating

nine colors. The same block is used for all nine prints; between each print more of the wood is carved away. “If you make a mistake cutting the board, you’re done,” said the patient printmaker.

The process requires starting with the lightest colors—white and yellow, in this case—and ending with the darkest. Each hue is printed on top of the last, which means the design must be perfectly aligned in each round. “It’s a really fun technique,” said Bingham, who started the process with 10 sheets of paper and ended with four that were free of major errors.

The 30th Annual California Avocado Festival will be remembered by Bingham’s unique design, which was chosen from 32 contest entries. First prize was $500 and a stay at the Cliff House Inn. Bingham’s work will be reproduced on thousands of commemorative posters, Tshirts and other memorabilia. The design contest is the first Bingham ever entered, much less won, and she called the recognition “exciting,” adding, “I hope people will like the image as much as I do.”

SB man caught stealing from med disposal box Christian Kulbe was arrested in the midst of robbing a safe medicine disposal kiosk at the Carpinteria Sheriff’s substation.

A 46-year-old Santa Barbara man was arrested just after midnight on Sept. 4 with a makeshift device he was allegedly using to steal medications from the Operation Medicine Cabinet Kiosk at the Carpinteria substation of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department.

A Sheriff’s Sergeant observed Christian Kulbe with a homemade device utilizing a cord and fishing hook to remove syringes, medications and other controlled substances from inside the box located outside the office for safe, anonymous disposal of drugs and medications.

The suspect was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on the following charges: possession of stolen property, petty theft, possession of burglary tools, prowling and possession of controlled substances. His bail was set at $2,500.

In a press release, the Sheriff’s Office noted that members of the public should not place sharps of any sort into the Operation Medicine Cabinet drop-boxes.

Medicine should be in its original packaging if possible. Loose powders and pills must be sealed in a Ziploc bag.

Pretty great weather, huh? Chilly mornings and sunny afternoons, with big night skies full of stars and dreamy moons. Of course, there’s another version of this summer. Loving those long lines at the Arco station at Casitas Pass and the 101.

Waiting for the big pickups towing the condo-size trailers to fill up and then figure out how to get back on the road through all the other big trucks impatient to get to the pumps.

Speaking of the 101, we have two Chihuahua-mix dogs that need to run off their morning energy much as 3-year-old kids do, and, because of the dog leash law, we get up early and go to the park to let them run off-leash. We cross the 101 most mornings around 7:30, and man, oh man, the traffic going north on the freeway is fierce––giant truck after giant utility truck after giant SUV, inching ahead 3 feet at a time. Burning that fuel. Cooking our atmosphere. Did I miss the memo that said once gas prices drop below $2.50 a gallon there’s no more ozone depletion? That carbon and methane no longer count?

Then there were/are the fires. Across the west, the fire season no longer starts in October with the arrival of the Santa Ana winds. The fire season is pretty much from Easter until Christmas. In May, at the start of summer, the Forest Service said there were at least 40 million dead trees in California’s forests. Most of these trees, conifers, have fallen prey to a beetle the size of a grain of rice. But the drought has left our forests fatally weak and susceptible to any and every attack.

As I write this, the Rey fire in Santa Ynez Valley is reaching deeper into the Los Padres National Forest, the Chimney Fire north of Paso Robles has burned some 300 structures, and the Blue Cut fire down south has torched over 100 homes and more than 200 other structures. I doubt that’s the end of the fire story in Southern California this year.

Like I say, we haven’t even reached the Santa Ana wind time of the year. We’ve fallen asleep at the wheel in this luxurious summer; the cool vibe of So Cal life has lulled us to sleep with music that sounds like an Hawaiian ballad on a soft trade wind, but really it’s the sound of Nero fiddling while Rome starts to burn. Are we really this clueless?

Take a look at our political leaders, because this summer has been remarkable for another thing—a whopper of a presidential election. Both nominees spent campaign time in California during the primaries. Neither spoke a word about global warming, neither ventured into our tinder-dry forests or the parched-earth at the southern end of our

A new dawn breaks: Help is available for people with mental illness

The United States likes to go to war. In my lifetime there have been the Vietnam War, the War on Poverty, the War on Cancer, the War on Drugs, the War on Terrorism. None of these can be claimed as victories; all of them should be considered giant wastes of time, lives and public treasure. And you know why? None of them threatened our lives. None of them threatened our existence. In the 1940s, when fascism finally revealed itself as a threat to our very existence, we went to war in a second, with brutal efficiency.

Factories were retooled from building Chrysler Imperials to B-52 bombers in six weeks. Americans showed their strength of will and their moral outrage.

Germany, Italy and Japan were defeated in four years. (Hell, in four years Halliburton barely had time to steal $100 million in Iraq!) We got ‘er done. This hasn’t happened since World War II. The stakes have never been that high. War profiteering is too tempting. War is good business. I take that back. War is great business. Especially if you steal lots of money and nobody in your family ever so much as breaks a fingernail.

But things have changed. Our globe, Mother Earth, is under a severe and tricky fatal attack. Even Mr. Trump, who has called global warming a “total hoax,” admitted this in his filing to build a giant sea wall of 200,000 tons of rock to protect one of his golf courses in Ireland “from global warming and its effects.” (Why can’t he say “rising seas”?) Him speak with forked-tongue, I think. Next month we’ll continue this conversation. We need to refocus on what the real enemy is.

But this first: My friends at Sweetwater Collaborative are leading a rainwater harvesting demonstration by creating an urban garden at the Carpinteria Valley Water District this Saturday, Sept. 10. It runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and it’s really an important thing to experience. If and when it rains again, we need to be ready to put the rainwater in the ground, not the flood channels. As mental illness becomes increasingly de-stigmatized, many people are sharing their stories online. For Louise, depression was “a constant, poisonous gloom.

Somehow it casts a mist over the eyes that makes one see nothing as it is, and everything is clothed in gray, dull tones.

Life loses all brightness. The dread that this condition can and might continue causes a longing for death.”

In any given year, one in five adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., is more common than homicide and the third leading cause of death for people 15 to 24 years.

Recovery from mental illness is possible, and treatment works. The National Institutes of Health, for example, reports that up to 80 percent of those treated for depression show an improvement in their symptoms generally within four to six weeks of beginning medication, psychotherapy, attending support groups or a combination of these treatments.

National Suicide Prevention Week, Sept. 5 to 11, is a good time to reach out to a family member or friend with mental illness. Help is available.

For adults, free mental health assistance is available at the Carpinteria Veteran’s Memorial Building, 941 Walnut Ave., between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. For children, screenings and assessments occur between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at the Carpinteria Children’s Project, 5201 8th Street.

Clinical services are available by appointment every Tuesday between 3 and 7 p.m., also at the Carpinteria Children’s Project, 556-1600.

Fortunately, Louise’s story, like those of so many others who have sought help, has a happy ending. “As depression lifts, another emotion is felt,” she recalls. “Sheer joy and gladness. Joy that the depression did not last. Joy that it was gradually leaving. Joy that one did not give up on life in the darkest days. Joy that life was waiting, beckoning, offering its gifts. The departure of depression is like a new dawn breaking. One can live again.”

Obituaries

Raymond Lopez Goena 5/7/1930 – 9/6/2016 Raymond Lopez Goena was born on May 7, 1930 in Carpinteria California. He passed away peacefully Sept. 6, 2016 surrounded by family at his ranch in Carpinteria.

“Rinkys” was a Korean War Veteran and lifelong resident of Carpinteria.

Raymond, a Carpinteria High School Hall of Famer, still holds the record with three kick returns for touchdowns in his career. Ray is survived by his wife Vera of 59 years, three children, Mina (Sam), Lisa (Ed), and Steven and former daughterin-law Christine; eight grandchildren, Michael (Kim), Raymond, Wyley, Oliver, Jake, Robby, Mathew and Alex; and one great-granddaughter, Riley. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia Goena Tryon. He is predeceased by his parents, Ascencion and Jose Goena, brothers Joe, Arnold and Luis, sisters Charlotte Goena, Emma Echeverria, Madeline Goena and Aurora Kountz.

Special thanks Adriana Martinez, his caregiver, and Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care.

Services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 11:30 a.m. at the Carpinteria Cemetery.

Patricia “Patti” McKay Grewe 2/19/1926 - 8/22/2016

Patricia “Patti” McKay Grewe passed away peacefully the evening of Aug. 22 with her devoted husband, Bernard, by her side.

Patti was born Patricia Ann McKay in Detroit, Mich. on Feb. 19, 1926, to Ellen Erin and William McKay. She graduated from Visitation High School in Detroit and attended Mercy College.

Patti met Bernie on a hayride. They married in 1949 and enjoyed 67 love-filled years together. In 1950 they moved to California eventually settling in Canoga Park where they raised their six children: Pandora (Gino), Nell (Eddy), Bill (Tammie), March Ann (Larry), Mary Jo (Wayne) and Tom (Lisa). In 1977 they made Carpinteria their home and more recently relocated to Arroyo Grande and Morro Bay. In addition to her six children, Patti is survived by her sister, Peggy; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Cathy and Gene.

Patti had a very strong faith in God. She loved the Lord Jesus and shared that love with others through testimony and song. Patti had a beautiful voice. She took joy in helping others, and everyone loved her. In Bernie’s words, “She was the best.”

Her children, family, and friends agree.

In order to honor her wishes, interment was private and a memorial will be held at a later date. If you would like to honor Patti, Bernie requests that you consider making a donation to your local food bank. Remember to add a little chocolate, it was her favorite.

Donald William Rosebro 8/22/1939 - 8/30/2016

Donald William Rosebro, that sweet, gentle, bear of a man, left us unexpectedly Tuesday, Aug. 30. Born Aug. 22, 1939, he lived all his life on Holly Avenue and attended Carpinteria schools as well as Mt. Carmel and Bishop Diego. He broke his neck playing football for Bishop and could be seen for the next six months looking like a ghost with a cast that came over his head and reached down to his waist. He switched to Carpinteria High School after that incident.

After serving in the U.S. Army, he worked many years as an automotive mechanic on Holly Avenue and came out of retirement to help with Ryder/ Budget Truck Rentals for another twenty years. He could always be seen around the old neighborhood, sweeping the sidewalks, watering plants, keeping everything in order. From childhood on he was an avid reader and researcher on numerous scientific subjects.

There are probably grooves in the sidewalk and pavement where he walked daily to Coastal Liquors for snacks and Pepsis, followed by his nephew David’s dog Mutt, who would wait patiently outside for his Hershey bar. All cats, dogs and raccoons counted Donald as a close friend. He also visited Reyes Market, across the street, daily for over 60 years.

He was always there for his many nieces and nephews and was more a father than an uncle. In turn, he was dearly loved and appreciated by them and their children. He was predeceased by his parents Wallace (Slim) Rosebro and Christina Schlautmann Rosebro, his sister Dorothy Rosebro, his older brother John Rosebro, niece Julie Ann Rosebro and nephew Roger Egan. He is survived by his nephews Jack Rosebro (Anna), Steven Rosebro (Naomi), David Rosebro (Dallas), Roland Egan (Merry), Eric (Rusty), and his nieces Jeannie Rosebro (Pedro) and Susan Rosebro. Also surviving are grand-nieces and nephews Josie Rosebro, Gauge RosebroAguirre, Manny Rodriguez-Rosebro, Pierce Rodriguez-Rosebro, Adam Cordova, Michael and David Egan, Shawna, Heather, and Christopher Egan, and Crystal Egan, his sister-in-law Jimmie Rosebro, as well as numerous cousins in Wyoming. Holly Avenue is so empty without Donald’s presence.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016 at 11 a.m. there will be a celebration of Don’s life at the corner of Holly and Carpinteria avenues.

Rolland John “Joe” Wullbrandt 11/22/1919 – 9/5/2016

Joe Wullbrandt, 96, of Carpinteria, Calif. passed away peacefully with his wife of 73 years, Emily, at his side on Sept. 5, 2016 at Alexander Court Memory Care Center.

Joe’s journey began Nov. 22, 1919 in Genoa, Neb. where he was born to Herbert and Edith Wullbrandt. The family moved to Carpinteria in 1925. Joe attended Carpinteria schools and Cal Poly prior to enlisting in the Navy where he served in the South Pacific. He proudly served the country he loved from 1943 to 1945.

After serving in World War II, Joe returned to Carpinteria and married Emily Sheppard. In 1947, he welcomed into the world, the biggest joy of his life—his daughter Jill. Through his daughter, his legacy and memories transcends four generations.

Joe’s legacy is his family he loved. He is survived and forever remembered by his wife Emily, daughter Jill (Wullbrandt) Englert and her husband Kent, his loving granddaughters Kim and Mandy and their husbands Jim and Lane, and especially his three great grandchildren Ben, Blake and Will.

His journey was made without desire for recognition or awards, of which he has had his share. His heart was dedicated to God, country, family and Carpinteria. Joe was a 32nd Degree Mason, a Life Member of Lions Club, a U.S. Navy veteran, a strong Carpinteria supporter and one of the initial surfers at Rincon.

Joe was blessed in that he loved his work at the blacksmith and welding shop, which he purchased in 1947. Every day was like being on vacation he would say.

Please join the family as we celebrate Joe’s incredible life on Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. at the Carpinteria Cemetery. A reception will be held shortly after at the Lions Park.

The family of Robert Donnelly express much gratitude to our neighbors, long-time friends and extended families for your support and kindness during the difficult loss of our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa and great-great grandpa.

Choosing life, no more suicide

As a local mental health professional, I am aware of the tragedies suicide plays in the lives of surviving family members.

Suicide does not just touch one person––the family and society as a whole are affected. The thing is, suicide can be prevented. There are often warning signs that a professional or a lay person can pick up on by simply listening. A little time with a depressed or otherwise mentally ill person can save a life. Just by taking some time to listen to your children, your parent, your neighbor or co-worker, you might save a life.

Being mentally healthy in our society with bullying, cyberbullying and a host of other problems can be tough. If you are lucky enough to be counted as a “healthy” one, take the time to learn how to stop this preventable tragedy that we call suicide. You can start by attending a candlelight vigil, put on by Hopenet of Carpinteria, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m., on Linden Avenue at the beach. Hopenet is Carpinteria’s own group of concerned citizens who provide education and resources to prevent suicide. Contact hopenetofcarp. org for information.

A leader for Carpinteria

When I first met Fred Shaw he was standing knee deep in a ditch, covered with the muddy entrails of a burst water pipe and trying desperately to find and stop a pesky leak. We are both residents at Silver Sands Village mobile home park, and he was the acting manager at the time of the leak.

I realized later that this is Fred at his finest. We must re-elect him to the Carpinteria City Council.

Helping, solving, pitching in, organizing and volunteering himself to serve others is his nature. He brokers consensus building solutions for small and large problems.

We have been friends over the years and even work out with the same trainer (notice I did not say we had the same routine). He is relentless in his pursuit of fitness, be it basketball with the younger set, swimming laps at the community pool or wrestling with his two grandkids.

A good human being is obviously

going to make a good leader. Fred has consistently proven by his actions on the City Council he is a leader we can trust.

You will hear a lot about his goals to preserve and improve open space, workforce housing, the bluffs, agricultural land and the small town community life we have in Carpinteria. To know him is to respect and admire him. This is a winning combination.

Mostly he is a great person, willing to take action and not shy away from hard decisions. And, if you didn’t notice, he never misses a meeting, and answers emails and telephone calls promptly.

The first step was a big step

On Sept. 26, 1996, on behalf of myself and 11 artist colleagues, I signed a lease, renting a small commercial space on Linden Avenue. Step one: A Gallery opened at this location (now Matt Moore’s Rincon Designs) one week later during that year’s Avofest. Shortly after the door opened onto confettied streets, our first and very generous donor, the late Marilyn Fendrick, took a break in campaigning for city council candidate Dick Weinberg, stopped at our door and wrote a check on the spot!

Now, on the 20th anniversary of that signing, I want to honor and remember those courageous visionaries who pledged their time, money and efforts to establish and sustain the gallery and its partner, The Carpinteria Valley Arts Council. Together, by 2001, these two nonprofit organizations raised awareness and funding for the ongoing operation of the gallery as well as for the purchase of 855 Linden Ave., where today’s Art Center is located.

Gratitude is extended to Step One’s first Board Members: Patricia Doyle, Sheila Ehrman, Joan Gunther, Eddi Hastings; and additional Charter Members of the organization: Peggy Burnham, Joan Decile, Margit Hagberg, Margaret Herr, Millie Jackson, Ted Leonard, and Claudia Weitlanner.

Fire district hires new chief Ray Navarro was appointed Fire Chief of Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District on Sept. 1 by a unanimous vote of the board. Chief Navarro worked locally as a Division Chief between 2009 and 2011 before being hired by Santa Barbara County Fire.

Navarro comes on board after a several tumultuous years for the district. Former Chief Mike Mingee stepped down in 2015 to resolve a legal dispute and end years of discord with firefighters. Also that year, the district’s $12 million bond measure to build new stations crashed and burned at the ballot. Battalion Chief Jim Rampton stepped in as interim chief, overseeing an extensive indepedent study to help the district plot its next course. Rampton made it clear from the outset that he would help temporarily before resuming his role as a battalion chief.

By hiring Navarro as chief, the district appears poised to float another bond measure to voters. Consolidation with another agency had been discussed, but the recently completed Standards of Coverage study advised board members against hiring a chief if they were serious about dissolving CSFPD. Chief Navarro is a fourth generation Santa Barbarian, where he currently resides with his wife of 37 years, Paula. Prior to beginning his fire service, Navarro served as an active duty Helicopter Flight Medic in the U.S. Army. He returned to college after earning an honorable discharge and completed an Associate Arts Degree at Mt. San Antonio College, and a Bachelor’s Degree from California State University at Long Beach.

Navarro’s fire service career began in April 1981 as a firefighter and paramedic for the City of Beverly Hills, and he rose through the ranks to Battalion Chief. In 1985, Chief Navarro was appointed as the California State Firefighter’s Association Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Committee Chair, assisting in drafting legislation to improve the safety and scope of practice for paramedics. He was then

appointed to the State Commission on Emergency Medical Services by Governor George Deukmejian in 1990.

In 2009, Chief Navarro was hired as Division Chief for CSFD and spent the next two years building relationships among the members of the district and community. He accepted a position with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department as Division Chief from 2011 to 2016.

As Duty Chief for Santa Barbara County Fire, he commanded numerous incidents including the Isla Vista Rampage in May of 2013. Since that incident, he has made an impact by participating on the FIRESCOPE Operations Team to develop a response to Active Shooter Incidents, and was a co-author of a county-wide policy for law enforcement, fire and EMS to use a unified command structure in response to active shooters.

The Santa Barbara County Trails Council is holding two sun. races, a 4-mile and a 10-mile, on Sunday, Sept. 11, as a fundraiser for Phase III of the Franklin Trail. The start time for both is 7:30 a.m. at the Carpinteria High School Parking Lot, 4810 Foothill Road. Participants are advised to arrive early. The event will fund the work necessary to complete the final phase of the trail that leads through the foothills to the crest of the Santa Ynez Mountains and into the backcountry. 9/11 Memorial

Kubo is right. Get your blinking done during the previews. Because “Kubo and the Two Strings” is a feast for the heart, mind, and indeed, for the eyes. And you don’t want to miss a morsel.

Kubo is also right to imply that you are in for something unusual. The usual part of the story is that Kubo is a young Japanese boy who lives with his mom in a small village.

The un- part is, well, everything else.

First of all, Kubo has magic. When he strums his magical shamisen (which is a lute-like musical i n s t ru m e n t ) , p a per figures—people, cranes, dragons, chickens, and whatever else Kubo wants—come to life to do Kubo’s bidding.

This is mostly a parlor trick. That is, until, and here we continue with the un- side of usual, he learns that he is being chased by his Aunt (Rooney Mara) and Grandfather (aka Moon King, Ralph Fiennes) who killed his samurai father, took one of Kubo’s eyes (yes, he only has one) and are looking to snatch his other one so that Kubo, like them, becomes blind to the cares of others. After learning all of that, Kubo needs to repurpose his magic.

Kubo’s mission is to find his father’s magical armor—a sword, breastplate and helmet—with the help of Monkey (Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Matthew McConaughey). Monkey was once a little wooden figurine that Kubo carried around. Now she is a flesh-and-blood monkey. Beetle, a sort of quixotic doofus (though in a thoroughly disarming way), was a samurai but is now a half-man, half-insect, sporting six appendages.

Together they journey across land and sea in search of their treasure, while fending off the stuff of nightmares: a towering skeleton monster, giant glowing eyeballs that can “see into you,” an enormous, dragonesque bug, and, perhaps creepiest of all, two magical sisters hovering above the ground wearing lifeless, colorless porcelain masks,

mocking their victims with their raspy, ethereal voices. (This is a kid’s movie?)

Unfortunately, “Kubo and the Two Strings” does end up indulging in some clichés but these foibles are easy to overlook, given its other virtues.

Charm smooths flaws, and this movie is so charming. Each of the characters is striking. From the sprightly Kubo, to the stern yet witty Monkey, to the sincerely goofy Beetle and even to an old village woman with a bright smile and warm laugh—each character is unique and authentic. I would say they are well developed, and they are, but the fact is they exude their personalities so effectively that no lengthy development is needed; you understand the characters, and their humor, as soon as you meet them.

The indispensible conduit for all of this—for the charm, the humor, the captivating story and lilting dialogue—is the animation. It is 3D stop motion animation. Each character is painstakingly crafted, and then, frame by frame, moved or adjusted so as to give the appearance of motion. A team of animators put one week of work into the creation of each 4.3 seconds of the film.

The result is breathtaking. The colors are crisp and arresting, the faces are alive with subtle expressions, and the overall aesthetic transports us to another world. This is crucial. For while this movie feels fanciful, exotic, and indeed, unusual, it also feels warmly familiar and very real.

“Kubo and the Two Strings” is rated PG for thematic elements, scary images, action and peril.

On Aug. 1 at about 10 p.m., a deputy responded to a vehicle vandalism call from an apartment complex on Via Real.

A resident of the apartment complex had witnessed a Hispanic male repeatedly slamming a bicycle against the windshield of a parked sedan. The owner of the vehicle lived in the complex and when the deputy arrived, the neighbor who had witnessed the vandalism came out of her apartment and began translating between English and Spanish for the deputy and the owner of the vehicle. As the witness described the man with the bicycle, the owner of the car said that it sounded like her boyfriend.

A bicycle that matched the description of the one used to break the windshield of the sedan was parked in front of the sedan owner’s apartment. Bits of broken glass lay on the sidewalk near the bike.

The owner of the vehicle said that the man was her boyfriend, and that he was angry because she would not let him use her car to pick up his children because the car would not start. She said she did not want to press charges and just wanted her boyfriend to pay for the damage he’d done to her windshield. The boyfriend came out of the apartment and admitted to breaking the windshield and also agreed to pay for the damage. No arrests were made, and an incident report was filed.

Rocks, crack, cars

On Aug. 25 at approximately 7:20 a.m. deputies were dispatched to the corner of Via Real and Toro Canyon on a report of a man throwing rocks at vehicles. The deputy who first responded reported that a man matching the description of the rock thrower ran down into the creek that runs under the bridge west of Toro Canyon. The man had thrown rocks at several passing vehicles, including a MTD bus, cracking the windshields.

Deputies searched the area but were unable to find the suspect.

Later in the morning, at approximately 9:15 a.m., a deputy contacted a man who fit the description drivers had given of the rock thrower. (One driver had pulled over to confront the man after he’d broken his windshield, but the man ran off.)

The man admitted to throwing rocks at vehicles and gave consent for deputies to search his backpack. Detained in handcuffs because he had displayed violent

behavior toward others, the man admitted to smoking marijuana and methamphetamine about a week earlier, but no contraband was found on his person.

Placed under arrest, the man agreed to speak with deputies and said that he was frustrated that the cars passing on the road were talking to him and being rude. The man said he moves his head from side to side to avoid hearing the cars talk to him. He admitted to throwing the rocks at the cars so they would stop bothering him. The man continued to make incoherent comments about other cars that passed, also admitting that he’d thrown rocks at five to 10 vehicles that morning. The search of the man’s backpack revealed a broken glass pipe with a piece of Brillo pad stuck in one end, which, the deputy reported, is commonly used to smoke crack cocaine. The man was taken to Santa Barbara County Jail and booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Down by the river

On Aug. 26 at 9:30 a.m., a uniformed deputy was walking the footpath along the creek bed in the 5400 block of Carpinteria Avenue when he heard noise coming from an encampment. The deputy saw a homeless man, who he was familiar with from past contacts, sitting in a wheelchair holding what appeared to be a bottle of wine that was about two-thirds empty.

A syringe was in plain view on a blanket nearby, but the man said the items in the camp were not his. The man was on parole with unrestricted search terms, and when a second deputy arrived, the man’s belongings were searched. No contraband was found.

The reporting deputy contacted the man’s parole officer, who said she wanted him to report to her early the next week.

The man was scheduled to appear in court that day, and the deputy noted that he will likely have a warrant issued for missing the date. The deputy issued a citation for three violations: possession of a controlled substance, camping in a non-designated area and open container.

The man had been arrested previously for being under the influence and for possession of drugs and paraphernalia.

One more time

On Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m. a man was sprawled on the ground on the corner of Dorrance Way and Elm Avenue. An

off-duty parole officer had arrived on the scene before Sheriff’s deputies did, and placed the man in handcuffs once two passersby had brought him upright and were holding him in a sitting position.

A deputy reported that the man appeared heavily intoxicated and his speech was “very lethargic, thick and slurred.” Placed in the deputy’s handcuffs, arrested and searched, the man was found to have two mini bottles of vodka in his pockets. His demeanor fluctuated between calm and cooperative, and agitated and cursing. A records check revealed that the man had two outstanding warrants for his arrest, also for public intoxication.

En route to county jail the man began yelling, cursing and making statements of “killing you (expletive)” when he got out of jail. During booking at the jail, the man said he was suicidal and began hitting his chin and face on a table, but “it did not appear that he hit the table very hard,” the deputy reported. The man was placed in a safety cell and booked for public intoxication and his warrants.

Bar fight

On Aug. 27 at approximately 10 p.m. patrons of a pub near Linden and Carpinteria avenues fought with a man who slashed at them with a knife after becoming angry when his beer was moved. Deputies interviewed numerous witnesses at the pub, who said that the man became angry and brought out a knife, but no one had been aggressive towards him.

When the man began slashing at people, several patrons fought with him using bar stools and pool cues. Witnesses said the man fled west on Carpinteria Avenue before running north on Elm Lane. A man matching the description given by bar patrons was detained on Sawyer Avenue, and one of the men involved in the fight identified him as the man with the knife.

A K9 (Aco) located a knife near the area where the suspect was detained. The man was booked into county jail and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. One man’s shirt was cut, and another man suffered a slight cut and bruises to his wrist, but there were no major injuries.

At least they didn’t get any surfboards

Sometime on the night of Aug. 28/29, unknown suspects broke the driver’s door window of a Channel Islands Surfboards delivery vehicle and stole a gas card from the center consol.

Cate starts school year with teen peace advocate

For many speakers, a standing ovation is a reward for an inspiring and well-delivered speech, but when Malala Yousafzai spoke to the Cate community on Aug. 29, students, faculty and guests rose to their feet and clapped vigorously before she even uttered a word. Her talk came on their first full day of the 2016-17 school year—one student thanking her for making it “the best first day of school ever!”

The 19-year-old native of Pakistan began speaking out publicly in support of girls’ education when she was just 11.

She then survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban aboard a bus as she headed home from school in October of 2012. After a long and difficult recovery, Yousafzai has become an internationally recognized advocate for equality in girls’ education. She received a Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 at the age of 17, the youngest person ever to do so. Her autobiography “I am Malala” has been translated into more than 40 languages and sold millions of copies. She has met with President Obama and spoken before the United Nations General Assembly.

But on this day, Yousafzai appealed to the Cate community as a fellow student, talking about her life in school back in England, where she shared, “I too, worry about homework and exams” and “am stressed about applying to university, so we have a lot in common as well.”

Of the Taliban’s attempt to silence her she said simply, “They made a big mistake. They wanted to take a voice which was (being used) on a very local level. In return, I got a voice on a global level.” She urged students to use their own voices for their causes, “for as you know, if it is quiet, one voice is louder than anything.”

Timing is critical too, she acknowledged.

“We are here in this world once – if we want to do it, this is the only time – this time, this moment will never come again.

Her foundation, the Malala Fund, has used its moment and voice to open schools for Syrian refugee girls, as well as schools in Nigeria, Kenya and Jordan.

Some of her inspiration comes from understanding that education “is more than books and pens in my school pack.

It (is) something that is empowering

women ... fuel for women’s voice, fuel for women’s status and women’s recognition in society.”

The young woman spoke lovingly of her parents, whom she said have inspired her deeply. Her own quest for educational equality has its roots in the school her father started in Pakistan. And she expressed admiration for her mother’s transition to Western life after the family moved to England following her attack.

Yousafzai seemed to acknowledge that her fame and renown has brought her many great gifts, but that her high profile life may have denied her some of the simple things her audience might be accustomed to like riding a bike, swimming, playing games, and being with friends.

LIVING THE GREEN LIFE ERIN MAKER It sometimes seems like summer is never-ending. September and October are often the nicest months in our area, with endless days of sunshine and heat. And although endless summer isn’t something that I wish for in our drought stricken climate, all this sunshine is great for some things, such as producing solar energy.

I’ve written about energy efficiency before, but solar falls in a different category.

Rather than using less energy, homes and businesses that install solar panels actually offset their energy consumption by producing their own energy, and in some cases give back to the grid. Solar has come a long way since its inception, but how do you know if it is the right fit for your home or business?

Solar panels convert sunshine into energy, but even on cloudy days a solar panel is often still producing energy. It has been around for a long time—the first solar cell was produced in the late 1800’s—but only gained popularity as an energy source in the 1990’s.

There are two types of solar energy systems: photovoltaic and concentrated solar power systems. Photovoltaic systems are used on homes and businesses. They work by converting sunshine directly into an electric current using solar cells.

Concentrated solar power systems, like the large complex systems found in the California desert, use lenses and mirrors to indirectly convert light to energy by concentrating a large area of light into a single beam.

Without getting into the technical details of converting light to energy, there are some simple elements to consider for installing photovoltaic (PV) cells. The average home in the U.S. uses 1 kilowatt (kW) of energy per hour. With about 730 hours in a month, and the price of a kilowatt hour (kWh) ranging from 10 to 23 cents in Carpinteria, depending on the season, the average home’s energy usage ranges from about $73 to $168 per month. Of course, this is a very general estimate—if you have a hot tub, air conditioning or even multiple electronics in constant use, your bill could be much higher.

Solar panels have become much more efficient over the years, but they only produce energy during daylight hours, so let’s conservatively say that one panel will generate 10 watts per square foot.

Conversion efficiency varies depending of time of year and weather, but let’s say

The payback period on installing solar panels has become shorter as the efficiency of those systems increases... that in Carpinteria you can count on five hours of sunshine producing energy per day, year round. Five hundred square feet of solar panels would give you 5 kW each day, which would offset your use and translate to savings of $15 to $35 a month.

These are very conservative estimates, and most people I know who have installed solar power systems find even greater financial benefits than the numbers above suggest. The payback period on installing solar panels has become shorter as the efficiency of those systems increases, and if you include the incentives available, installing a photovoltaic solar system becomes a viable source of energy for your home.

Most people who have home solar power systems are still tied into the electrical grid, which means that when they are producing more energy than they use some of it will go back to the grid, unless they have battery storage (a topic for another article). There are many sources of alternative energy including solar, wind, and water—each has its positives and negatives. As the population grows, moving and away from coal and nuclear based power plants and towards alternative energy sources makes sense from both an environmental and health standpoint.

With long periods of sunshine across Santa Barbara County, solar energy makes financial and environmental sense in many cases for homeowners here.

There are a lot of resources for people considering solar power, and a great place to start is by looking at local programs like Solarize Santa Barbara. As infrastructure gets older, looking towards alternative sources for energy becomes more and more important.

Rodolfo Rivademar, a member of several art organizations including Oil Painters of America, Laguna Plein-Air Painters Association, the California Art Club and S.C.A.P.E., is leading a plein air painting workshop on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carpinteria Bluffs. Class projects include creating a dish, pendant and earrings. All supplies are included. Local man becomes hawk hero

Editor’s note: Carpinterian Richard Villegas witnessed a rare battle between two wild predators near his home in the foothills. In the end, the hawk flew away, the snake slithered off, and Villegas sent Coastal View News the following account of the incident.

Tuesday, May 24 was no ordinary Tuesday for me. I thought that it was going to be, but it ended with a duel of two predators here in the mountains. As I was ending my day, I heard a neighbor in the distance shouting about a snake in Spanish. At first I wasn’t sure what to think; the woman clearly sounded distressed.

Before I could think twice, I was already hearing another alarm, my phone ringing.

I answered it and to my surprise I was now hearing the same distressed voice through the speaker of my phone—it was my neighbor across the canyon panicked about a terrible duel between two predators, one with scales and one with feathers, and the latter was quickly succumbing to NEW ADDITIONSofFOR NOODLE LOVERS the constrictions its scaly opponent.

This gopher snake was one of the biggest I’ve seen, at about PASS RD 4.5 1025 to 5 feet CASITAS long and as thick as my wrist.

The snake had wrapped itself around the 1025 hawk, taking it out of the sky to do battle to the death on the hot black pavement.

I immediately sought a stick from a nearby bush to help push off this giant

gopher snake now strategically wrapping itself around the bird’s neck while keeping its head down by the feet. I would strike at the snake and it would strike back—it clearly didn’t appreciate a tag team battle. But trying to keep its dinner partner subdued and stop me at the same time proved to be too much. I convinced the snake to release its death grip on the dying hawk and to my surprise it decided to take me on. It quickly slithered and contorted its scaly body in an aggressive manner, showing its strength as it slung bites at me in defiance.

Nope, I didn’t care for that much, so I guided the snake off the road and back to where it belongs—seeking and eating gophers. My attention immediately shifted to reviving this majestic bird and checking if there were any broken bones, whether in its legs or wings. I carefully picked up the hawk and held it. It was dazed and confused, tongue hanging from its beak and yet with a look of gratitude in its eye.

It seemed to know intuitively that I was a helping hand.

I turned my red-tailed friend over and laid him stomach down on the ground to check the wingspan for damage—none.

Overall it looked good, still catching its breath and waiting for the blood to rush back to its head. I felt blessed with the CASITAS PASS RD presence of this beautiful bird. Watching it come back from the brink of death I felt chills dance up my spine and goosebumps race across my skin.

BY ALONZO OROZCO Between 2012 and 2014, the Carpinteria High School Football team strung together three consecutive victories against rival Santa Ynez, but after last Friday night’s 42-0 road loss, it looks as though the Pirates now have the upper hand.

After beating the Warriors at Memorial Stadium last year by the same huge score, Santa Ynez now has a two-game winning streak, though Carpinteria still leads overall with a total of 33 wins and 29 losses , including three ties.

In a game of big plays for the Pirates, one of their biggest came right at the start when quarterback Michael McCoy connected with wide receiver Gabe Pendergast for a 48-yard pass play deep into Warrior territory. But Carpinteria was able to keep Santa Ynez off the scoreboard momentarily at least, as McCoy’s toss was intercepted by Warrior Terrell Richardson.

A three and out gave the ball back to the Pirates on the Warrior 48. This time McCoy did some legwork, scrambling for a 48-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0 just a little more than three minutes into the game. Following another Warrior punt, McCoy would go back to the air, finding a wide open Jasper Kadlec for a 61-yard touchdown pass and a 14-0 lead at the 6:34 mark.

The middle of the field was open for Santa Ynez for the entire first half. “We had a substitution situation where we ended up with some guys playing in positions that they don’t normally play,” explained Carpinteria coach Ben Hallock. Hallock inserted young sophomore quarterback Vance Keiser into the game to replace experienced junior starter Mike Garibay on the next possession, but the ball stayed put. Santa Ynez, with good field position this time, would score again on running back Greg Farris’ fouryard touchdown run, making it 21-0 with still 2:56 to play.

The Warriors then caught a break, recovering a fumble on a punt return, putting the ball at the Pirate 26. But when Keiser’s pass was picked off by Pendergast the scoring threat was quickly neutralized.

Santa Ynez scored another three times before the end of the half, two of those scores on McCoy runs of 52 and 95 yards, with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Pendergast to build a 42-0 lead. A Carpinteria interception by Russell Estrada in the end zone would prevent the Warriors from falling any further behind before the half.

The second half was played with a continuous running clock as the Carpinteria defense responded by shutting out Santa Ynez in the second half. Although Keiser didn’t get the Warriors on the scoreboard, he showed a lot of grit in moving his team downfield. “This (performance) will go a long way to continue to strengthen his confidence into what he can do,” said Hallock of his backup, who completed six of 16 pass attempts for 55 yards with two interceptions. Cate loses to nail-biter to Mojave

The Cate football team kicked off the 2016-2017 season with a tough 34-32 home loss to the Mojave Mustangs on Sept. 3. After being down 14-0 at half time, the Rams called for 18 third-quarter points. Going into the final frame, Cate was down 28-18. in the fourth quarter, the Rams took a brief lead, only to surrender it with six minutes to go. with Cate down two, the Rams rallied but were unable to get into the end zone.

Sophomore Jack Deardorff was a spark plug for the Rams, taking over at quarterback in the second half. He threw for three touchdowns during Cate’s second half scoring rampage. Another sophomore, Drew Anastasio, ran the ball well and found his way into the end zone for his first Cate touchdown. Seniors Pierce lundt, Chase McCaw and junior will Bowlin all played well on the offensive side.

The Cate defense showed some serious promise, keeping the game close despite some poor field position. Junior Luke Beckman was stout at middle linebacker, while lundt was able to recover a fumble.

Senior Henry Dawson did a great job helping to anchor the defensive line. i thought we did a lot of good things on the field. For a fairly young squad to battle tough against a very good Mojave team shows how much potential we have. we will continue to clean up the little mistakes and hope this game can be a building block for us moving forward.

Cate is off for Outings week and will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 16 at Coast Union. Kick off is 7 p.m.

Cate girls volleyball takes on Tri-Valley

The Cate School girls volleyball team has seen its share of success the past two years, reaching the semifinals in the CIF playoffs last year before falling to Summit of Fontana in a close match, and capturing the CIF championship the season before by beating Duarte. This year, coach greg novak and his talented team are preparing to face more challenging competition.

The Rams move from the Frontier league into the Tri-Valley, where they will now compete against some traditionally strong squads such as la Reina and nordhoff. “i think that’ll be good (the league change) because every match is going to be a little tougher, instead of cruising through (league) like we did the last couple of years,” said novak. “winning too much causes you to get complacent,” he explained. Familiar Frontier foe, Foothill Tech, also looks to be a force to be reckoned with this year.

Cate will no longer have the services of First Team All-CIF player Peyton Shelburne, who graduated last year, but stalwarts Delaney Mayfield and Hailey Panzer will return to the court. novak recently held tryouts and seems to have a promising freshman class. “i’m anxious to start and see what these new freshmen can do,” said novak who saw an increase of 15 players try out this year, compared to the seven who came out last season.

One member of that incoming class, grace Blankenhorn, will start at the libero spot. Julia McCaw has a good chance of moving up from the JV squad to step in at the defensive end. it will all unfold when the Rams take on TriValley league opponent Villanova Prep on Sept. 13 to begin the season.

Aug. 30 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team opened their season with a non-league win over Pacifica (Oxnard), 13-5. Collecting sweeps for the Warriors were doubles team number-two Athena Cuellar/Maria Zamora and number-three Hali Schwasnick/Jessica Lord. The last point in doubles came from Vicky Delk/ Alejandra Alvarez. In singles, Jeanette Fantone went 2-0, while Kathryn Blair and Josie Gordon each went 2-1. “One-third of our team has never played high school tennis, but they are all eager and willing, which is great sign,” said Warrior coach Charles Bryant, whose team starts the season 1-0 overall.

Sept. 1 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team beat Nordhoff in a nonleague match, 18-0. In singles, number-one Kathryn Blair and number-two Josie Gordon both swept. Athena Cuellar won her only set, but the matches of the day went to Jessica Lord, who went 2-0. In doubles, there were sweeps by Alejandra Alvarez/Vicky Delk and Alejandra Garcia/Sydney Endow. Anna Artiaga also went 3-0, pairing up with Maria Zamora for two wins and Hali Schwasnick for the final win. “It was a combination of us playing well and them being a bit tired from their previous day’s match in Ojai in the heat,” said Warrior coach Charles Bryant.

Sept. 2 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team had a rough outing, losing a non-league match to San Marcos, 16-2. The Warriors’ two points came in singles with Kathryn Blair winning two of her three sets. Alejandra Alvarez/Alejandra Garcia subbed in the last round and went down 0-5, but came storming back to take a 6-5 lead only to lose in a tiebreak. “We just came out so flat in the first round, and I think the hitting pace, consistency and the athleticism of San Marcos really shocked us,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant.

Sept. 6 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team weathered a broken down van and a very short warm-up in beating Oxnard in a non-league match, 16-2. “Sydney Endow found a little more confidence in her game,” said Warrior coach Charles Bryant. Kathryn Blair went 3-0, Josie Gordon went 2-0 and Hali Schwasnick went 1-0 to round out the singles action. In doubles, Maria Zamora/Alejandra Garcia went 3-0. Carpinteria is now 3-1 overall.

Aug. 30 - The Carpinteria High School girls golf team started their Tri-Valley League season strong with a commanding 282 to 318 win over the Flashes of Fillmore at the par-37 Santa Barbara Golf Club. The Warriors had a balanced lineup with all five players scoring in the 50s, led by Mikayla Blair and Iliana Esquivel each shooting a 55. The Flashes were led by Connie Quintana with a 54.

Sept. 1 - The Carpinteria High School girls golf team made a valiant effort to take down league champ La Reina at the Santa Barbara Golf Course, but fell short by the final score of 239 to 262. The Warriors were led by senior Juliet Parsons with a career best 45. Mikayla Blair shot a 50, while Iliana Esquivel and Samantha Saenz both tallied 54. La Reina was led by defending Tri-Valley League Player of the Year Haylee McGovern with a sterling one under par 36 to set the tone for the day. Next up for the linksters is Santa Paula today (Sept. 8). With the loss, Carpinteria falls to 1-1 on the season.

The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team came out strong in the first quarter scoring eight goals and keeping Pacifica at zero, en route to a 14-4 victory. Seniors Forrest Van Stein and Sal Briceno scored a total of seven goals, and junior Wyatt “the cannon” Stevenson lit up the cage with four goals. Junior Michael Leonard made his debut in his first varsity game ever, and scored his first goal within the first 30 seconds of the game.

REQUIREMENTS: A bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration or related field with major course work in city and/or regional planning, architecture, geography, public administration, business management, landscape architecture, environmental studies or other related field.

Minimum four years of work experience in planning or related field. A Master’s Degree in urban planning, public administration or related field may be substituted for two years of planning or public policy experience.

Applicants must possess a valid California driver’s license.

Boys & Girls Club opens remodeled Resource Room

on Aug. 24, the united boys and Girls Clubs of Santa barbara held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its newly remodeled Resource Room at the Carpinteria unit. the Resource Room will feature a dedicated homework center, a Science technology engineering Arts and math (SteAm) educational space and 20 new computers.

Along with new computers, the Resource Room now has new floors, all new furniture, new supplies for SteAm activities and dedicated staff for homework help. the Resource Room, and other technology upgrades installed throughout the club as part of this project, will serve approximately 100 kids daily. Funding for the remodeling and computers was provided by the 2016 Carpinteria Kids Benefit Auction & Dinner, the Walter and brenda barrows Family trust, and Venoco, inc. “the new space is very exciting in terms of broadening the scope of educational programs that we can offer to our members,” stated Club director debra herrick. “the room was designed to nourish a spirit of collaboration, creativity, discovery, and learning, and it has been a joy to see the Carpinteria community come together in support of creating this space.”

Rotary district Governor Nick Frankle congratulated morning Rotarians on their service to Carpinteria and around the world during his recent visit. he emphasized that service is Rotary’s core value. According to Frankle, “if we serve others by improving their lives, the life that is changed most is our own.”

Gym Next Door owner visits Sunset Rotary

Cyndi macias, owner of the Gym Next door, dispensed stretching, balance and memory advice to members of the newly formed Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset. macias’ gym offers medicare’s Silver Sneakers program for individuals 65 and older.

The Sunset Rotary now meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at island brewing Company, 5049 6th Street. Anyone interested in joining the casual social and community service club is welcome to attend the meetings, which feature a community speaker, light meal and beverages. the next meeting on Sept. 7 will feature ibC owner paul Wright and include a tour of the brewery.

Cuban travel opportunities presented to Rotary

Carpinteria travel agent Rob Godfrey spoke to the Rotary Club of Carpinteria on Sept. 1 about the recently expanded travel opportunities between the united States and Cuba. Godfrey, who owns travel 1090, informed the group that although tourist travel is not yet permitted, travel certifications are flexible enough to allow motivated travelers to visit via commercial airline or cruise ship.

Takes two Nuñezes to tango

Manuel Nuñez started listening to tango music in the 1950s when he was growing up in Mexico.

The sounds of Carlos Gardel came to Nuñez’ small town via one of two radios that existed there at the time. Fifty-plus years later, Nuñez made a trip to Argentina with his wife, Linda, to visit the haunts of the famed singer Carlos Gardel and others who gathered in Buenos Aires’ La Boca neighborhood on Caminito, also known as “Tango Alley.” The Nuñezes brought the Coastal View News along to tango, too.
