Maybe the intense emotions of the Vietnam War brought Carpinteria High School’s Class of 1966 together. Maybe the era’s groundbreaking music was the common thread that bonded the 120-person class. Maybe it was simply growing up in a small town—much smaller then than now. Whatever the reason, or reasons, members of the Class of 1966 felt uniquely connected and now, 50 years later, they feel uniquely excited to come together again for their reunion weekend, Friday, Sept. 30 through Sunday, Oct. 2.

Jim Campos, one of the reunion organizers, said that he has surprised himself by becoming so involved. He wasn’t active in student government in high school but dove into planning the reunion and is thrilled by the opportunity to catch up with people he hasn’t seen since at least the class’s last reunion, 35 years ago.

Campos pointed to the music as the group’s main unifier. He noted that several important albums, like Pet Sounds and Revolver, debuted in 1966 and changed the course of music. Radio hits, he said, had strong messages all over the political and social spectrum.

back there,” agreed classmate Cathy Middleton Kulakowski.

Naturally then, music is central to reunion plans. Organizers booked Plaza Playhouse Theater for Saturday night’s main event, a musical tribute to the 1960s performed by local band The Rincons.

Rincons bassist Roger Gilbert is a member of the Class of 1966, and lead singer Curtis Lopez graduated with the Class of 1969.

Over 50 members of the class are expected at the reunion, and they are flying in from as far away as Alaska, Michigan and all over the West Coast. Campos said that 25 classmates have passed away, which means that over half of the remaining members will come together a half century after high school to swap old stories and fill in the gaps from the last several decades.

Elaine Chisolm Long helped to coordinate the event from her home in Idaho, and Linda Parker Spaulding, who now lives in Washington, tracked down many of her old school mates in the planning process. “Linda became a detective,” said classmate Ron Hurd. The Carpinteria side of the planning effort relied heavily on Hurd and Campos, both of whom live locally and are well connected to the community through their careers and volunteer work.

The stroll down memory lane will make all the organizers’ prep work worthwhile.

Conversations about their shared experience trigger lots of laughter and nostalgia for a bygone era. Kulakowski said she remembers walking along Casitas Pass Road to the high school—the campus that is now Carpinteria Middle School—with lemon orchards to one side and avocados on the other. Casitas Plaza and Shepard Place Shops didn’t exist until years later.

There wasn’t much for teenagers to do in town, Kulakowski said, echoing a cry from Carpinteria High Schoolers from just about any era.

Hurd recalled that most days fell into a standard routine. “You went to school, then you found someone with a car to go out and cruise with, then it was dinner time, and after you’d go cruise some more.” Cruises led up and down Linden and Carpinteria avenues, past the A&W, The Spot and Fosters Freeze.

Linden Beach served as summer headquarters for most of the local teens.

Campos remembers day after day on the volleyball courts and in the ocean.

The surfers, he said, often hung out at Rincon instead.

One school morning in 1966, a solemn voice came over the classroom intercom announcing that Jim McDonald, Class of 1965, had been killed in Vietnam. Campos said it was reminiscent of the day JFK was assassinated in 1963 during his sophomore year.

The reunion weekend kicks off with the Carpinteria/Bishop football game on Friday, Sept. 30, which organizers knew would be a draw, as the rivalry between the Warriors and Cardinals was fierce in the Class of 66’s senior year. Predictions put the CHS football team at the bottom of the pack for league, but the Warriors surprised everyone with a stellar season and earned a spot in CIF. Led by senior quarterback Mike Donnelly, the Warriors took down the Cardinals 6-0 that fall.

Saturday night will find the group gathered at the theater for The Rincons concert. A reception will be held beforehand for the class, but the concert is open to the public. Reunion organizers hope the 7:30 p.m. show will attract members of other 1960s classes. Continuing a tradition that spans more than 40 years, on Sept. 9, over 700 Carpinteria Unified School District students had dental screenings by local dentists. Doctors Berkenmeier, John Marsh, Jeremy Patelzick, Janice Sugiyama and orthodontist Page Hudson were at Canalino School, while doctor Loren Churchman and periodontist Dan Noble screened children at Aliso School. Dr. Harrington, who organized all the screenings, was at Summerland School. The annual screenings help identify children with dental problems who need treatment.

No room at this inn

Thank you, Al Clark, for saying no to the proposed huge water guzzling, 30- to 40-room railroad hotel and restaurant.

If you want more beach area rentals, lift the ban on beach vacation rental licenses.

The city would be setting a horrible example for all of us with buckets in our showers, yellow toilet water, sink bowls for hand washing dishes, who water once a week and on and on.

We need a moratorium on new construction and water hook-ups—now!

Otherwise, I will shower every day and flush, flush, flush!

Gimme a break

In regards to the article about the city council considering building a new hotel by the railroad: really? How about putting off growth and/or development until the drought has abated? And why spend $17,500 to work with a consultant on a proposal request for developers, and then turn around and decide against it (as an option, of course). Where’s the fiscal frugality in that?

I’m with Al Clark. It’s a big no for me.

The city council members need to read the Coastal View News dated Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016 and refer to the ad in the bottom left corner of page 13: Drought Still On - Conserve Water. If they want to go forward with a hotel and restaurant, then they should also consider the drip system for the toilets, showers and maintenance at that project. Doesn’t make sense to bark about residents not watering their plants or yards or washing cars or flushing toilets and cutting back on overall water usage only to rally around adding more hotel rooms.

Saving the bluffs from development only to squeeze in more downtown?

And here I thought the city council was meant to protect the interest of Carpinteria residents.

There are many difficult and complicated decisions when it comes to your child’s education. Even in a town as small as Carpinteria, where there are relatively few options, I lie awake at night wondering whether I have considered all things and weighed them appropriately so I can make the right choices for my children.

What kind of training will their teachers have? Will my children be high- or lowperformers in their class? What kinds of resources will be found on their school campuses? I have an infinite number of

unanswered questions, and my children haven’t even entered kindergarten yet.

This year, the CUSD School Board will experience dramatic changes in makeup in addition to the already rocky start of this school year. Two of the five seats will be filled by vote in the November election. In my search for answers in education, I am beginning to question whether the next school board members will be putting the education of Carpinteria’s children first. This will mean supporting our students and our teachers. Our students need to have access to programs that have been shown to promote academic success, such as TK and dual-immersion. Furthermore, we need to recruit and keep our best educators by paying them fair wages and providing yearly cost of living adjustments, at least.

As the November elections approach, it is becoming clear to me that my vote for school board will be for Maureen Foley Claffey, whose campaign “Carpinteria Kids Matter” has resonated with me, as a parent and as an educator. She has reached out to the community to understand the diversity of issues and concerns unique to our city. I respect her dedication to the community and know that she is the right choice for our children’s education.

There is no longer a “season” in town.

It is, even without weekday commuter traffic, crowded and becoming more so with every passing year. How soon will the ever-increasing impact on surface streets require more and more timely repair?

We are still in the worst drought in California’s recorded history. Councilman Al Clark brings up a critical point: what increase in water use will a commercial enterprise of this magnitude put on our already strained water supply?

This proposed enterprise would most certainly burden all city services even further.

The intangible that can only be measured individually is the thing we all prize most. How many times have we all gone down into the valley, or anywhere close to Los Angeles, and at the end of the trek been so thankful to come home?

I can only praise Clark and condemn the other council members! Are any of those four members of the Chamber of Commerce? If so, I fully understand their voting. I mean, their interests are not the preservation of the very last of California’s small beach towns.

To put it all more succinctly, “Here we go again!”

Let’s take the high road

In rebuttal to the latest inflammatory claims that our school board has been less than transparent, operating “under the cloak of darkness” as Jay Hotchner, president of CAUSE (the teachers union) said to Noozhawk: I am curious to know what he would have the board do? The fact is, the school board is not ethically or legally able to disclose information related to hiring and firing school employees. My guess is that the board, known for being financially judicious, had to make a difficult decision in dismissing the superintendent. I also can’t help but wonder if the recent resignation of two outstanding principals had anything to do with Ms. Miglis.

Speaking of transparency, perhaps, Mr. Hotchner, you can answer a couple of questions: In the last eight years of your tenure as teachers’ union president, how many times have you sued the school district, and how many hundreds of thousands of dollars did it cost the school district in legal fees? That’s money that could have gone to teachers’ salaries.

What have you accomplished, and how has it benefited the teachers? Where there was once merely a divide, I now see a chasm.

I’m also rather curious about the Facebook page, “CUSD Parents and Students.” Clearly, looking through all the dialogue, it is teacher advocate based. Parent opinions are few and far between—is this just another vehicle to manipulate public opinion, knowing that the board cannot verbally counter your claims? As someone once told me, there are always two sides to every story.

Personally, I am ready to see the board and teachers come together. However, in

stated—an enormous disappointment. I might list the failures of the company to manage, stock, provide decent products, train employees or provide any kind of expected customer service—all a terrible disgrace. As a professional, I attempt to use the store, yet I often leave a cart abandoned in line as one checker fumbles through a back-up of eight customers.

The atmosphere is drab at best.

Today I traveled to Costco in Goleta, bearing the drive out of frustration with Smart and Final. I stopped at the Sprouts Store on Fairview. Now that is what this community deserves. It’s an amazing store with great prices, enormous selection, great service—on and on.

Smart & Final is a total failure here and we all know it.

Cynthia “Cindy” Gene Nesheim

Cynthia “Cindy” Gene Nesheim passed away peacefully on the afternoon

of Sept. 16, 2016 in Madison, Wisc. Cindy was born on Nov. 18, 1949 in Mineral Point, Wisc. to Eugene and Nona Bell Chappell. In 1978 she moved to Carpinteria where she spent the next three decades raising her family and working throughout the region as a bookkeeper.

Cindy loved being a mother and always took great pride in her children. In 2007 she returned to Wisconsin to be closer to her mom who was beginning to suffer from early stages of dementia. Anyone who ever knew Cindy loved her. She was a warm and fun person who always cared deeply for her friends and family. She is survived by her mother, sister Marcia (Robert) Lancaster, brother Terry (Roberta) Chappell, children Jessica (Yonatan) Rosner and Jacob (Monica) Nesheim, and grandchildren Avriella, Ness, Shiloh, Edward and Lee.

Nomura’s your man

When I moved to Carpinteria after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, I knew from reading the Coastal View News that the one person I most wanted to meet in town was Wade Nomura. I introduced myself to Wade at the dedication of the Fallen Veterans Memorial at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Park and have since learned the true depth of him as a person.

Wade has lived in Carpinteria since 1977 and has dedicated himself to serving others—his wife, family, city and points beyond. The bulletin board at Hugo’s includes faded news clippings of Wade’s tireless efforts to make the lives of others better around him. What a testament these news items are, as they highlight Wade’s 21 years of service to the City of Carpinteria, his deep involvement with the Boys & Girls Club of Carpinteria and the Carpinteria Morning Rotary Club civic organizations, his being recognized as Carpinterian of the Year in 2011 and the list goes on. Wade even coordinated the creation of the Tomol Interpretive Play Area at Linden Field, a cornerstone for our community’s children, families and visitors, which I am proud of every time I walk by In our world of technology, entertainment, and people calling attention to themselves as what I consider to be illdefined heroes, Wade embodies my own definition of a hero—one who gives up a portion of himself to serve others. Wade is one of the most accomplished, yet unselfish, people that I have ever met in my life.

So I will be voting to re-elect Wade Nomura to City Council in the upcoming election. I feel we are honored to have people like Wade serve in our community and I cannot imagine we would not want his continued leadership in this capacity. I call on other Carpinterians to do the same.

This week’s “Man on the Street” column mentions the bumper sticker “Hillary for Prison in 2016.” While I’m no political scientist, I’d like to say that I think Hillary Clinton has been maligned and that I think she would make a better president than Donald Trump, who seems to me to be reckless and naïve about the complexities of public policy. (Though his presentation is often entertaining.)

Running the country is a complicated job that requires knowledge, intelligence and a desire to help Americans. I believe Hillary fits this profile, while I feel that Donald is mainly out to gratify his own ego and when asked to explain how he will make “America Great Again,” he says that he will “hire the best people.” Hillary has some shortcomings, and who doesn’t, especially when they are under the kind of scrutiny that exists today. But she doesn’t decide policy based on increasing the value of her brand or by bullying.

I believe there is a good side to change and that change can bring new beginnings and opportunity. However, with Trump, I believe there is more a risk of his change leading us to wars, economic, social and environmental calamities and who knows what other “changes.”

Hillary may not be exciting and always transparent but as Obama says, she is the most qualified person to hold the office.

Trump is an excellent salesman but of the huckster variety, who will say anything to make a sale. Let’s not be fooled by his pat solutions and braggadocio.

Know the facts regarding your school district

Watching the Warriors beat Nordhoff Friday night, I was reminded of what makes Carpinteria so great. It’s the community. Watching the teachers, parents, and community members volunteering to coach, lead the band, work the snack bar, and maintain the boosters table, you can’t help but realize they are all doing it in order to make the schools and community a better place. It is the reason I ran for the school board 6 years ago.

While there are challenges to being an elected official in a small town where so many things revolve around our schools, I am so proud to be able to give back to the community that gave me such a great start in life.

One of the biggest challenges as a board is maintaining effective communication with the community while preserving confidential information that could be damaging to employees or students.

As of late, I have been approached by a large number of people with inaccurate information. We are all blessed in this country to be able to have our own opinions. I feel strongly about that, but I also feel people’s opinions should be based on accurate information.

To enable the public to make judgment on facts, I would like to take this opportunity to share some facts in order to clarify some of the speculation swirling around town.

There is a teacher shortage in California, but CUSD is still able to attract many applicants for its teaching positions. (e.g. We had over 90 applicants for one elementary position recently). CUSD has had a fairly normal turnover in its staff over the past years with both retirees and staff leaving the district for various reasons. The middle school band program has NOT been cut. In fact, two years ago we added two mornings of strings instruments. The Ag program at the high school has NOT been cut. In fact, a new teacher has been hired.

The school board has made it a priority for at least 5 years to maintain class size reduction in grades K-3. Our goal is 20:1. While this hasn’t always been achievable, it is our goal. In listening to the community we heard that there was great desire to have more class offerings at the high school. With a school as small as CHS this is challenging, but we have been able to offer many AP, honors and dual enrollment classes. Many of these classes have fewer than 20 students. In order to maintain these classes some other classes have higher counts.

One of the most important roles the board has is to make sure the community’s money is spent sensibly and fairly while maintaining adequate reserves. The district has been accused of withholding pay increases and having excessive budget reserves. The facts are, teachers and staff have had salary increases of 7.25% over the past 2 years

as well as fully paid family health insurance benefits, including premium increases. The current cost is $18,238 per employee. The district is contractually obliged to cover any increases in health insurance costs until a new agreement can be reached. These increases have been close to a 1% annual salary increase dollar to dollar. All of this is in addition to automatic salary increases based on years worked. But it’s not simply an issue of whether that’s enough —there’s also the critical question of what we can afford.

As it stands, while Carpinteria has an approximate 9% budget reserve for the current fiscal year, it is projected to dwindle to nearly 3% two years from now—an amount far below what basic aid districts like ours are advised to have because of the uncertainty of their funding.

Carpinteria needs to be very careful that any salary increases we grant this year can still be afforded in the years to come.

Because our property tax revenues are in excess of the state guarantee minimum, we are considered a basic aid district.

This is normally a good thing. However, with new funding formulas and the common perception that basic aid districts only serve affluent families, the state withholds from basic aid districts certain additional grant dollars that are targeted for english learners and students living in poverty. Carpinteria has high populations of both. While state funded or LCFF schools have had large increases to their budgets over the past few years, CUSD has had revenue increases only as a result of increased property values, generally 4-5%. This is after the state withheld approx $5 Million for “fair share cuts” for which we will never be reimbursed.

No one thinks a district like ours will actually get into financial trouble, but on the news this week we have seen a vivid example of what can happen when schools overspend. One of the nearby districts that we are regularly compared to has indicated it has a large budget shortfall and is scrambling to find solutions.

CUSD passed resolutions supporting both Prop 30 and Prop 55. While neither guarantees CUSD regular revenue, both propositions will help ensure surrounding districts that are state funded to remain fiscally stable.

Emergency Preparedness Educational Forum

Tagged truck

On Sept. 2, a deputy was dispatched to the back of the Carpinteria Substation on a report of a vandalized vehicle. A resident of Carpinteria had brought his pickup truck to the substation because unknown persons had spray painted the front and back passenger side doors some time between sunset on Sept. 1 and sunrise of Sept. 2, when the owner left his vehicle parked overnight near the corner of 8th Street and Olive Avenue. The deputy made a report and photographed the spray paint damage. The owner of the truck said that he didn’t know of anyone who could be responsible for the damage to his truck.

A mother’s love

A deputy was dispatched to a house on Nipomo Drive on Sept. 6 at about 3 p.m. on a reported burglary in progress.

Upon arriving, the deputy saw a man run into the backyard of the house next door and believing the man to be involved in a possible burglary, the deputy detained him. A records check revealed that the man had three outstanding warrants for his arrest, and although the backyard that the man ran into belonged to the man’s mother, who said that he was allowed to be there, the deputy arrested him and transported the man to Santa Barbara County Jail. The warrants were for Burglary, Possession of a controlled substance, Trespassing and Failure to appear.

Sitting in a car

A deputy working uniformed patrol in a marked vehicle was driving north on Cravens Lane on Sept. 8 at approximately 10:40 p.m. when he observed a man sitting in a parked vehicle. The deputy reported the he “contacted (the man) and conducted a Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office records check.” The man had an outstanding warrant from Solano County, and the deputy took him into custody and transported the man to Santa Barbara County Jail. The man’s vehicle was towed.

The camera doesn’t lie

The owner of a glass company on Rose Lane called Sheriff’s deputies on the morning of Sept. 7 to report that one of his company vehicles had been broken into and property was stolen from it. A video surveillance system captured the incident, showing a white male in his 20s, approximately 6-feet tall and 190 pounds with brown hair, wearing a grey sweatshirt and grey shorts, carrying a writing tablet and a cell phone. The man lay on the ground in front of a storage container and appeared to be looking into the metal shield covering the padlock on the door.

He then moved to the driver’s side door of the company truck, opened the door and began going through items. A black Ford F150 pick up then appeared in the video driving through the alley behind the business. The black F150 stopped behind the business and another male, approximately 5’10”, wearing a black baseball cap, black sweatshirt, grey shorts, and black socks, got out of the truck to assist the other man in placing items taken from the company truck into the black F150. No license plate was visible on the video, and due to the distance from the camera, the deputy reported that he was unable to see the second man’s face. The business owner provided the deputy with a copy of the video, and the deputy filed a report on the incident.

Same F150?

A business owner on Cindy Lane brought a security video to Sheriff’s deputies from June 4, taken between the hours of 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. The video shows two men in a gray Ford F150 towing a white trailer, driving up to a storage shed on the business premises. One man got out of the truck and forced the storage shed door open, then both men loaded several items into the trailer behind the F150 before driving away. The video is not of high quality, a deputy reported, making it difficult to see the suspects.

One man appears to be wearing an orange reflective vest and the other wears a light colored work shirt with a name tag on it, but the deputy was unable to make out the age or race of the suspects.

A Honda generator worth $5,000, two pressure washers worth $400 each and two weed sprayers worth $100 each, were taken from the shed. The suspects also stole three 5-gallon gas cans. A deputy reported that the vehicle used in the shed burglary appeared to be the same one used in the burglary of the glass company truck on Rose Lane.

Bluffs after dark, redux

the parking area is closed after dark, the deputy reported that he observed a used glass methamphetamine pipe in plain view on the front passenger seat.

The deputy asked the man to step out of his vehicle and placed him in handcuffs.

A backup K9 unit arrived and Aco the dog searched the vehicle and found two plastic bindles with small amounts of methamphetamine. Finding no other contraband, the deputy issued a citation for possession of a controlled substance and possession of narcotic paraphernalia and then released the man at the scene.

No … well, yes

On Sept. 11 at approximately 9:30 p.m., a uniformed deputy in a marked patrol car was driving through a motel parking lot on Via Real—“a known location for narcotics activity,” the deputy noted.

Observing two men and a woman walk away from him when he drove by, the deputy reported that the three people then turned away from him again when they saw him on the opposite side of the building. “Due to their suspicious behavior,” the deputy reported, he parked at the neighboring property and watched the subjects enter the motel lobby and sit down. When the deputy approached the trio, the female asked, “You again?” reminding the deputy that she had been cited the previous week for possession of a methamphetamine pipe.

The deputy asked the men for their ID’s, and recognized one of them as having been involved in a battery investigation the previous week that had included drug use. The man admitted to using methamphetamine three or four days previously, but when asked if he had a pipe on him the man immediately said no, the deputy reported. Asked if he had any methamphetamine on him, the man paused for a few moments before shaking his head and saying no in a low voice. The deputy then asked the man how much methamphetamine he had on him, and reported that the man stared at him as if he was stunned by the question. The deputy again asked the man if he had meth on him and he “shook his head up and down, in an affirmative,” the deputy noted.

Based on the man’s statement, the deputy had him turn around and then placed him in handcuffs. But as the deputy went to secure the right side handcuff, he reported that the man “tensed up” and that the deputy “felt he was going to resist or attempt to escape.” The deputy pushed the man against the wall and finished handcuffing him with assistance in controlling the man from another deputy. The deputy then searched the man’s pockets and found methamphetamine folded in a bill of foreign currency. The man was transported and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail for possession of a controlled substance.

Photographers bond over beach town beauty

By Jay Bushey The Carpinteria Photography Club held its first meeting last month at the Carpinteria Arts Center. “The CPC is a group of amateurs as well as professionals who have two things in common: a love for photography and a love of Carpinteria,” explained Shelli Kenlein, a founding member.

The CPC began when Kenlein was contacted by her friend and fellow photographer David Powdrell to discuss his vision for the club. Kenlein shared Powdrell’s excitement and readily agreed to help get things started. Together, they outlined a plan for the club, secured a meeting location and began reaching out to local photographers to spread the word. “This was never intended to be something big,” explained Powdrell, “but there’s already an amazing array of talented photographers in Carpinteria. I wanted to bring them together.”

Although photography is generally regarded as more of a solo activity than a social one, Powdrell believes that there’s great value in creating a community for photographers. “In some senses, all photographers are lone wolves. But this is our way of coming together to form a pack.”

He hopes that the CPC will allow local photographers to share advice, exchange equipment and celebrate their love of the art with one another.

Powdrell believes that the CPC will help members to cultivate a deeper appreciation for Carpinteria and the unique experiences it offers. “Every person will shoot the same subject and come out with a different image. There’s room for everyone to be themselves.”

Glenn Dubock, a renowned surf photographer and a member of the photography club, shared a similar sentiment. “My favorite quote about photography sums it up this way: ‘Every photo is both a window and a mirror.’ The photographer is trying to share what they see, but, at the same time, it is a reflection of what they were feeling at the instant they captured the light.”

Dubock looks forward to the unique opportunities that the CPC will afford its members. “What excites me about the club is the opportunity to share creative knowledge. In the world of photography—especially with the new digital era—there is so much to learn, so much to experiment with, and so many avenues to pursue.” Dubock hopes to eventually participate in and lead informal workshops for club members.

While several of the CPC’s members are professional photographers, the club welcomes people of all experience levels.

“Regardless of experience and talent, this group embraces what’s important: a love of photography. How you capture your photograph, either by using your phone or an expensive camera, isn’t what’s important. What’s important is the story of that photo,” said Kenlein.

Club meetings are designed to encourage open, casual discussion between club members. To facilitate these discussions, members are emailed a list of “Hot Topics” prior to each meeting, which serve as starting points for conversation. At this month’s meeting, for example, members will share their favorite pieces of camera equipment, discuss various printing techniques and suggest ideas for future field trips.

Powdrell is particularly excited to organize field trips for the CPC. “There’s incredible wildlife in Carpinteria. The bluffs, the salt marsh, the Franklin Trail… They all have flora and fauna galore.” He also praised the local beaches for their natural beauty and the opportunities they provide for world-class surf photography. “It’s hard to miss a good photo at the beach,” he laughed. “We’re really lucky to live here.”

Morning Rotary expands vocabularies district-wide

The Carpinteria Morning Rotary members recently distributed more than 200 dictionaries to all the third-graders in the Carpinteria Unified School District in a total of eight classrooms at Aliso, Canalino and Summerland schools. This annual undertaking is a part of the National Dictionary Project, and was chaired this year by Rotarian June Van Wingerden. According to the club, assistance from the CUSD—especially Canalino Principal Jamie Persoon—helped make the day a success. Morning Rotary raised money for the project through Carpinteria Calendar sales and the annual Casino Night. Morning Rotarians Kerry Mann, Art Fisher, Karen Glancy, Jamie Collins, Langdon Nevens, Stephanie Salinas, Beth Cox and Wade Nomura pitched in for the distribution.

Cubism comes to Canalino

Kimberly Marme’s fourth- and fifth-graders at Canalino School recently learned art from a pro.

Guest art teacher Lana MarmePhillips, Kimberly’s mother in law, brought Pablo Picasso and his art to life in the local classroom. The kids learned about cubism by tracing one another’s profiles, using vibrant pastels and getting creative in the process of making their own Picasso self portraits. Lana has years of experience teaching in local schools, including Laguna Blanca and Villa Nova. “She will be bringing SUBMITTED PHOTO her love of art to Room 24 many times this school year,” reported Yaqueline Ceja draws herself with a cubist flare founded in Picasso’s art.

Carpinteria pitches in for Coastal Clean Up Day

Like a string of jewels, Rincon/Bates Beach, Jelly Bowl, Tar Pits, State Beach, Carpinteria City beaches and Santa Claus Lane form the sparkling oceanfront of Carpinteria. On Sept. 17, locals and visitors alike met at various beach locales to participate in three hours of beach clean up under the direction of volunteer “captains.” Countywide in Santa Barbara 3,125 pounds of trash were removed during the morning cleanup.

Cigarette butts, food wrappers, plastic bottles, fishing line, rope, old clothes and beach toys were hauled away and kept from entering the thriving ecosystem of the Santa Barbara Channel, and volunteers had a great time working together to keep the beaches clean.

California Coastal Cleanup Day is also the first day of Santa Barbara County’s Creek Week, which features additional opportunities to volunteer and learn about the connection between local watersheds and the open ocean. Crust process

Stir together flour, wheat germ and salt.

Cut butter into these dry ingredients (a pastry cutter makes this easy). When the dough is the consistency of rolled oats, sprinkle with enough of the water to hold the dough together. Form into two equal balls, cover and refrigerate for about an hour before rolling out into a circle approximately ¼ inch thick.

Cremini mushrooms are younger portobello mushrooms and are sometimes sold as “Baby Portobello” or “Baby Bella” mushrooms. They have a firm texture and a wonderful earthy flavor. I use them frequently in soups because they hold up better in liquid than most mushrooms.

1 cup fresh ricotta Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 3 Tablespoons olive oil, divided 4 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced thin 1 garlic clove, minced 1 bunch large Swiss chard, ribs and stems removed and leaves chopped 1 cup mixed spring greens 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest, grated fine

over medium heat. Cook garlic for until about 30 seconds. Add half of chard, season with salt and pepper, and cook, tossing until slightly wilted. Add remaining chard and cook, tossing occasionally until completely wilted, about 4 minutes.

Remove from heat, season with salt and pepper, and set aside.

Roll each ball of dough on a lightly floured sheet of parchment paper to about ¼-inch thickness (approx. 12-inches in diameter). Transfer parchment and dough to a baking sheet. Spread three-fourths of ricotta over dough, leaving a 1½-inch border. Top with chard and then mushrooms.

Dollop remaining ricotta over this. Bring edges of dough up and over filling, overlapping as needed, to create the border.

Warriors turn tides, record first win of the season

It turns out that maybe all the Carpinteria High School football team needed was a little “home cooking” to change its fortune. The Warriors upended visiting Nordhoff by a score of 10-7 over the weekend to notch their first victory on the season, improving their record to 1-2.

Carpinteria got on the scoreboard for the first time this year when Jacob Garside’s 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter put the Warriors up 7-0.

Garside ran for 93 yards on 25 carries as the top rusher in the game. It was the second game in a row in which Carpinteria was able to establish the running game.

But the Rangers answered back in the third quarter on Jake Perry’s 4-yard touchdown run to tie the score at 7-7. The game remained tied going into the fourth quarter, until Warrior kicker Brian Garcia connected on a 30-yard field goal to put the Warriors up 10-7. The kick would allow Carpinteria to hold on for the win.

Warrior quarterback Mike Garibay completed three of four passes for 18 yards, and also ran for a big 50 yards on the night. Garside was also the team’s leading receiver with one reception for 10 yards. “We were more focused, we tackled better, we played with better energy,” explained Carpinteria coach Ben Hallock. “We played a better defensive game, we held them four times in the red zone,” added Hallock.

The Warriors stay home to play Oak Park this Friday, Sept. 24 with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

Rams defeated by Monterey

A shift in schedule for the Cate School football team landed the Rams on the field with an unexpected opponent and resulted in a 40-21 loss to Trinity Christian of Monterey. Coast Union had forfeited its Sept. 16 game against the Rams, which sent Director of Athletics\ Assistant Coach Wade Ransom scrambling to schedule another opponent.

Trinity Christian agreed to fill the void but proved to be more than the Rams could handle.

Cate got on the board first on Pierce Lunt’s 15-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and the two-point conversion made it 8-0 with four minutes to play. With the Rams knocking at the door again at the Trinity Christian 10yard line, the Warriors’ Wyatt Hankard made an errant shovel pass that was intercepted to thwart the drive.

The visitors wasted little time taking advantage of the turnover as Jamez Booker burst up the middle for a 72-yard touchdown run to tie the score at eight with 31 seconds left in the opening quarter. Beginning at their own 16, the Rams

drove inside Trinity Christian territory when Lundt bounced off a tackle, running for a first down at the 36.

Continuing the drive into the second quarter, a quarterback sweep by Jack Deardorff put the ball on the Warrior six.

A Dearforff shovel pass to Drew Anastasio, topped off the drive and the Rams kicked the extra point, this time to take a 15-8 lead with 9:26 left until halftime.

Trinity Christian, however, once again responded quickly.

A few plays later, Booker, breaking tackles and reversing his field along the way, completed the 42-yard jaunt for the score, and his team’s two-point conversion put the Warriors ahead 16-15 with a little under seven minutes to play. The senior running back would give Cate problems all afternoon. “Missed tackles, we’re a young team. I just finished telling the team that the only way this game means anything is if we learn from our mistakes,” explained Rams coach Ben Soto of the non-league matchup.

However, things would go further downhill for Cate when the snap from center on a punt attempt deep in their own end, sailed through the end zone for

September 20 – The Cate School girls volleyball team experienced a late night, pulling out a victory with an 18-16 fifth set win against St. Bonaventure. “Senior Halie Straathof was moved to the outside hitter position and did a great job to serve, receive and play defense,” said Rams coach greg novak. in the middle, sophomore Katie Browne and senior Ciana Smiley had a combined kill total of 16 with only two errors off 33 attempts, giving them a .424 hitting percentage. Senior Delaney Mayfield led the team in kills. Junior Emily Burns and freshman Maya Blattberg teamed up to run a 6-2 offense, and share hitting duties in the front row. Burns managed to chase down 21 digs.

Girls volleyball

September 13 – The Cate School girls volleyball team won its first match of the season and first in the Tri-Valley League with a 3-0 sweep of Villanova. Junior Hailey Panzer started the match with four quick points off tough serves in the first match for the Rams after returning from outings week. Despite building a 20-11 lead, Cate experienced trouble with its side-out game, allowing the opponent to narrow the margin to 22-17, but the girls regrouped and were able to close out the set with a nice kill in the middle by sophomore Georgia Douglas. The second set mirrored the first with senior Delaney Mayfield coming alive, tallying six of her 11 kills on the match. in the third set, the Rams trailed 18-11 before senior Ciana Smiley took charge and catapulted 10 aces during a wild serving spree that brought Cate to a 2419 lead, and the eventual match victory. “For the first match of the season, the young and talented Cate team shows a lot of promise with great depth and versatility,” said Ram coach greg novak.

Running behind the surge of the offensive line, Lundt picked up a first down at the 15. On third down, he rumbled through the Warrior defense for a 15-yard TD, and the score was suddenly 24-21.

But Cate could get no closer, and when Booker added his fourth touchdown of the game with a little over four minutes left in the third, the lead had climbed to 32-21.

“The Ram defense made some solid second half adjustments, but they were unable to come up with the big play when they needed it,” said Cate assistant Dave Soto.

A touchdown pass in the final quarter rounded out the scoring. Cate is now 0-2 for the season. The Rams will once again be at home on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they take on Frazier Mountain. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m.

September 14 - The Cate School cross country teams opened their seasons on the Carpinteria Bluffs by finishing third behind a couple of solid schools, Carpinteria and Santa Paula. in the boys’ race, Cate’s Kyril Van Schendel won easily with a new meet record of 17:10. Senior co-captain Henry Walsh had a good start to the season, finishing fourth in 18:50. In the girls’ race, Carpinteria’s Mikela Keefer won the race for the second year in a row with a 20:19. Cate junior Isabela Montes de Oca finished third in 20:52, followed by sophomore Bella Hillyer in sixth in 22:31. Final results for the girls were Carpinteria, 36; Santa Paula, 40; and Cate 50. The boys closed it out with Carpinteria, 41; Santa Paula, 46; Cate, 57; and Santa Clara, 91.

September 16 – The Cate School girls tennis team opened preseason play at Rio Mesa in Oxnard and came away with a 13-5 victory. The Rams made a clean sweep of the doubles matches and also gained four wins in singles play. Freshman Grace Fuss started at number-one winning two out of three sets, and junior Jackie Cai won her match at the number-two position. “i was very pleased to start off our season with a match like this,” said Cate coach Trevor Thorpe. “it’s clear this group wants to defend our current position as the number-one team in CiF D2.”

September 15 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team dropped its non-league match to Division i sixth-ranked Oaks Christian, 14-4. “We won all of our points in singles, and the woman of the match goes to Jeanette Fantone as she swept her three singles sets,” said Warrior coach Charles Bryant. Josie Gordon won the last point beating the lions’ number-three player. “But i was really happy with Sydney Endow in singles, she just keeps getting stronger,” explained Bryant. Carpinteria is now 4-2 overall.

September 19 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team defeated St. Bonaventure in a non-league match, 16-2. The Warriors number-one team of Sydney Endow/ Jessica Lord went 2-1, while Vicky Delk went 2-0 with Josie Gordon, and 1-0 with Alejandra Alvarez. Rounding out Carpinteria doubles were Hali Schwasnick/Anna Artiaga, who went 3-0. In singles, Athena Cuellar was 3-0, and Jeanette Fantone and Kathryn Blair each went 2-0, while Alejandra Garcia went 1-0, filling in for Fantone.

September 20 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team opened Tri-Valley League play with a 15-3 loss to Foothill Tech. athena Cuellar/maria Zamora won two sets and anna artiaga/Jeanette Fantone won one of their sets. “I give Foothill a lot of credit, they were much more consistent than us by far,” said Warrior coach Charles Bryant. “We seemed to always make the first mistake, which more often than not turned into a lost point,” added Bryant. Carpinteria is now 5-3 overall and 0-1 in the Tri-Valley League.

September 15 - The Carpinteria High School girls golf team got back on the winning track with a 276-327 win over St. Bonaventure to improve their record to 3-2 in the Tri-Valley League. The Warriors were led by mikayla blair with a 50 and iliana esquivel with a career best 52. Juliet Parsons shot a 55 for the third best score on the day.

September 20 - The Carpinteria High School girls golf team finished the first half of their season, shooting their lowest competitive score of the year with a 236-276 win over Nordhoff at Soule Park Golf Course. With all the girls at or better than their career best on the par 35 course, the Warriors finished the first half of their season at 4-2 while Nordhoff falls to 2-4 in league and 2-5 overall. mikayla blair shot a 42 to lead all scorers with Juliet Parsons next at 45, and amanda blair finished third with a 47. The ladies play today at Fillmore to kick off the second half of the season.

September 15 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team traveled south to Santa Clara for the first league match away from home, sweeping the Saints, three games to one. Setter lupe Saldana ended up with 23 assists. Outside hitter Jenny alanis came away with 11 kills and seven digs. Middle blocker gaby rigonati had three blocks and eight kills. Sable tevault, in the first set, added four kills and four digs in the Warrior victory. “Carpinteria’s aggressive energy and effective communication proved triumphant,” said Warrior coach Dino Garcia.

September 20 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team made its way north to the home of the Cardinals at Bishop Diego, coming home with a 3-1 victory.

Setter lupe Saldana injured her arm and sat out during set two, before stepping back in and helping the Warriors seal the deal in the third and fourth sets, ending up with 21 assists. Middle blocker gaby rigonati added four blocks and three kills. Starting outside hitter Corina Porter and opposite monique Sanchez halted Bishop at the back row defense. Outside hitter Jenny alaniz finished the night with 14 kills. “The Carpinteria Warriors could feel the rivalry spirit as they walked into Bishop’s gym,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia.

a tRaineR’s jouRnal Rob buRke I’ve been a trainer for more than half my life.

Over the past 30 years, I’ve studied, applied and cursed the outcome of almost every variation of nutritional theory pushed onto me and, subsequently, onto my clients. In response, I can speak firsthand about how easy it is to wipe that chocolate chip grin off a cookie or have an internal argument with a supermarket loaf of bread.

“You’re my nemesis, you big loaf. And just because you have raisins, you’re not any better than your sourdough accomplice. Don’t even think that you’re going to find your way into my cart. You tempt me. You taunt me. You laugh in my face as you slide belly down over the scanner.

You’re smug with your declarative beep stating that there’s no returning you to the shelf now. As you ride the conveyor of shame, you proclaim that you have ‘wholesome’ printed on your wrapper, which implies that everything in moderation is acceptable. What does ‘wholesome’ mean? I won’t ask your cupcake cousin who nods to affirm your glutenbased lies. The meaning of cupcake love is only surpassed by the powerbroker of all baked goods—the carrot cake. I’m well aware that the word ‘carrot’ is a ploy for making me think there is some healthful component to the marriage of processed flour, lard and sugar. You make my toes curl, but you’re still nothing more than a pusher of a calculated esteem-busting setup.”

With aisle upon aisle of conspiring plastic wrapped tempters, how the heck are we going to win the battle of the bulge? There’s actually a simple answer, but we falter at implementation.

First, let’s dispel the lies. Most nutritionists and doctors are flat out wrong when they advocate a low-fat diet rich in grains.

The truth is that their recommended diet doesn’t support lower body fat levels.

Instead, the Journal of the American Medical Association published the results of a clinical trial by Dr. David Ludwig of Boston Children’s Hospital and a few of his peers. Even today there are many notable experts who still espouse the idea that a calorie is a calorie, otherwise known as the isodynamic law. But if this is true, why do we still have obesity issues if all we need to do is reduce our intake of calories? What actually causes obesity— too many calories, or something else?

For years there have been two trains of thought leading to disparate beliefs.

The most prevalent belief is that common obesity comes down to calories in minus calories out. The other less popular belief has to do with how the body partitions calories, either for energy or into storage.

If being overweight is an issue of fuel

partitioning, or a fat storage defect, then the trigger becomes not the quantity of food available but the quality—namely how dietary habits contribute to our respective issues with obesity.

Dr. Ludwig and his team found that when test subjects had their caloric consumption reduced until they lost 10 to 15 percent of their weight, the weightreduction made the subject susceptible to gaining the weight back because their energy expenditures dropped and they burned fewer calories than people who naturally weigh less. This means they have to continually fight hunger just to maintain their weight loss. According to the study’s findings, the belief is that weight loss causes ‘metabolic adaptations,’ which make it almost inevitable that the weight will return.

As part of the study, subjects were put on three dietary plans: one diet was low-fat and thus high in carbohydrates.

This was the diet we’re all advised to eat: whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean sources of protein. A second diet had a low glycemic index: fewer carbohydrates in total, and those that were included were slow to be digested—beans, nonstarchy vegetables and other minimally processed sources. The third diet was Atkins, which is very low in carbohydrates and high in fat and protein.

The results were remarkable. Put simply, the fewer carbohydrates consumed, the more energy these weightreduced people expended. On the very low-carbohydrate Atkins diet, there was virtually no metabolic adaptation to the weight loss.

On the very low-carbohydrate diet, Dr. Ludwig’s subjects expended 300 more calories a day than they did on the lowfat diet and 150 calories more than on the low-glycemic-index diet.

So what do these findings mean to us? Absolutely nothing, because we’re willing neither to forgo simple carbohydrates nor embrace extreme eating habits.

Therefore, my suggestion is to start each and every meal with a protein source accompanied by leafy greens or complex carbohydrates, and then thumb your nose at the cheesecake before you apologize and have a piece.

George had his home carted away, and John and Ruth built a small house in which to start their family. According to Joan Rock Bailard, the family home grew alongside the family. “Two wings were added as girls were added on,” she remembered.

In the late 1950s, John and Ruth sold the ranch and moved into a tract house nearby.

John passed away in 1975 at age 79, but Ruth lived to 103.

Cub Scouts meet on monday nights at 5:30 p.m., and Boy Scouts meet on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. meetings are held at the Scout House located behind the Carpinteria Community Church, 1111 Vallecito Road. All boys ages 6- to 18-years-old are welcome. The Rotary Club of Carpinteria morning joined forces with the Carpinteria High School Alumni Band and raised $400 for the CHS band during halftime at last Friday’s football victory over Nordhoff. The Alumni Band reunites annually under the direction of morning Rotarian Langdon Nevens. The Pass the Hat fundraising component, initiated by Rotarian June Van Wingerden 14 years ago, has raised nearly $7,000 toward the band program.

Scouts brave Kern River rapids

The summer found Troop 50 Boy Scouts adventuring by land and by water. After the troop’s annual trip to the Hi Sierra Summer Camp, the scouts who have earned first-class rank went on a five-day white-water rafting trip on the Kern River. United Way of Santa Barbara’s “Day of Caring” event on Sept. 17 benefited from the elbow grease of Playa Del Sur 4-H of Carpinteria. The local group joined the Goleta 4-H team and the employees of Lockheed martin to prune shrubs, plant plants, clean and paint walls and install new lights at the Veterans’ memorial Building in Santa Barbara. The Saturday event started off with a rally at Ben Page Youth Center in Goleta, where 50 groups met up before dispersing to 50 different sites throughout the Santa Barbara area to perform much needed tasks. one of the 4-H members said, It’s nice to be able to do something for people who have done so much for us and this country.”

Astro came to Nancy Foerster via the Santa Barbara Animal Shelter last December, and the two have been enjoying the best of Carpinteria ever since. Astro’s favorite haunts (coincidentally favorites of Nancy Foerster as well) include the footbridge on 8th Street, Tar Pits and Corktree Cellars. Astro loves to socialize with other small dogs including his best friend, Zeus. He knows several tricks and is great on leash, Foerster reports, adding, “I love this furry friend so much!”

Carter sent a video to Ellen Degeneres requesting she use a bit of her star power to help him raise some of the dollars toward his goal, and though he hasn’t heard back from her yet, Beth said Carter is holding out hope that she will pitch in before the Sept. 30 deadline to collect donations. Carter also told the club that he is personally committed to selling 100-plus Carpinteria calendars for the morning Rotary Club this year. The other plain

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham Last spring during one of my five trips out to the Carrizo Plain National Monument, I detoured north out along Simmler Road, behind Soda Lake and along the San Andreas Fault near the base of the desolate Temblor Mountains, destination unknown.

The other “main drag” on the Carrizo Plain is the less-traveled Elkhorn Road, which is a slower paced route, rocky and rutted, especially last spring following what little rain we got. The rain we did receive brought some flooding to the Carrizo Plain, and there were some impressive mud floes that spilled over the dirt track and filled in some of the dry, seasonal arroyos that flow towards the grasslands.

However, it was the mud floes where many of the best wildflower displays were located. Blazing stars, purple phacelia and especially tall stocks of unique desert candles lit up the chocolate brown mud floes. It was the first time I had the opportunity to photograph the somewhat spindly desert candles. I took full advantage of the lime-colored stocks and deep magenta blooms with a fixed 15mm and my 70mm-200mm lenses.

I’ve driven the Elkhorn Road twice in the past and on both occasions I was searching for the endangered blunt-nosed leopard lizard, the Elkhorn Plain being one of its last, best bastions for this stunning reptile. It was also real hot. That was in June and the grasslands were extremely dry, the Carrizo Plain being one of the hottest locales in the state once summer rolls around.

This trip was much different though.

Spring was in full swing and the wildflower season was the best it’s been since the winter/spring of 2010. The surrounding hills were swept in green with huge splashes of yellow and purple on the open book-shaped canyons.

I was headed east toward the remote Elkhorn Plain, and didn’t see another vehicle the rest of the day. As I drove along the straightaway between the Temblor Range and adjacent hills to the west parted ways and the narrow valley broadened into a vast plain, a canvas of green, gold and purple, with some orange added in for good measure.

The Elkhorn Plain is still within the Carrizo Plain National Monument, tucked inside its southeast corner. Not a lot of visitors out that way, so it was a nice bonus during a decent wildflower season.

The Elkhorn Plain wouldn’t appear like this for long, maybe a week before it would turn. I had to stay the night.

A light, cool breeze and the melodic, soothing calls of western meadowlarks were all I needed for the rest of the afternoon. I ditched my filthy truck and walked about a mile out to pitch my crusty tent at the edge of a carpet of goldfields, brilliantly bright and in sharp contrast against the desolate badlands of the rugged Temblors.

Goldfields stretch as far as the eye can see in the national monument last spring. star-filled evening. Real early in the morning I awoke to an unexpected four-legged visitor. A lone pronghorn antelope carefully stepped around my dew-covered tent. A sniff, a light snort and it moved away and to the west, the grasslands no doubt beckoning.

As the sun rose over the Elkhorn Plain, it warmed the frost-covered phacelia surrounding my tent. It’s always tough to leave such fleeting beauty. You never know when the next great wildflower season will arrive. With a seemingly neversay-die drought, it’s these moments of rejuvenation that I tend to hold onto until next time. It could be a long wait.
