Construction closes bike path and ramps temporarily

As the Linden-Casitas Interchange Project moves forward, Caltrans has announced a handful of closures that will affect traffic circulation through Carpinteria temporarily. Carpinteria Creek Bike Path will close between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. through Friday, Oct. 21 as Caltrans workers clear vegetation along the creek where the extension of Via Real will take place. Also, continuing on Oct. 20, starting at 10 p.m. alternating northbound and southbound lanes and ramps will be closed between Casitas Pass Road to north of Linden Avenue. Northbound lanes and ramps will reopen by 5 a.m. Southbound lanes and ramps will reopen at 7 a.m. Crews will also continue to install storm water pollution prevention measures and begin widening work in the median and shoulder areas of Highway 101. Buckles ‘n’ Brews offers rare and specialty beers

Body Image workshop offered for range of issues

Overeaters Anonymous will hold a Body Image workshop next month for anyone recovering from a food addiction, be it compulsive overeating, anorexia, bulimia or body image issues. The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 1335 Vallecito Place. Attendees will work on steps in the 12-step Overeaters Anonymous program. ARB signs off on art center remodel

By ChristiAn BeAmish And LeA Boyd The Architectural Review Board threw its support behind the Carpinteria Arts Center remodel at its Oct. 13 meeting, green lighting the proposed front and side awnings, a large new “ART” sign and installation of a double door linking the newly acquired building at 865 Linden Avenue with the neighboring courtyard of the longtime arts center.

The new sign, with a red background and beige lettering, surpasses the size dictated by city regulations. Arts Council representative Ted Rhodes said, “We’re asking for sign modification that would be appropriate for a library, arts center, etc. This is not a commercial enterprise.”

Arts Council Co-chair David Powdrell added, “Art is bold,” and new center’s sign should be too.

“I like it a lot, and it’s important for (the Arts Center) to stand out,” said ARB Vice-Chair Scott Ellinwood.

External components of the project also include removal of some windows and the tile roof “eyebrow,” as well as new surfacing and paint on the face of the building. Inside, the remodel will convert a space formerly used as a restaurant into galleries, offices and a storage room. A second bathroom is proposed, as well as a revised kitchen layout.

An issue that continues to haunt the Arts Center is the proposed awning, which aims to wrap around the front of the building and the west side, extending into the courtyard at 855 Linden. As a rule, an awning from one property cannot extend into another, said City Planner Nick Bobroff. ARB members encouraged Arts Center representatives to merge the two properties, but the new property at 865 Linden Avenue isn’t owned outright by the nonprofit and won’t be until a loan is paid in full over the next year. The organization will plead its case to the Planning Commission in an effort to have the awning approved despite the dual-property issue.

The ARB also approved by a 2-1 vote alterations to a warehouse building at 500 Maple Avenue. Architect Dylan Chappell, who was in the interesting position of representing the warehouse project and its owner, Thom Vernon, while serving on the ARB he was seeking approval from, recused himself from the vote. Proposed changes included new windows, replacement of eight rollup doors, new exterior paint and architectural detailing. The new design calls for metal frame doors with glass panels that will allow more light into the building than the existing rollup

doors of the same size.

At a prior hearing of the ARB, Chappell and Vernon had been asked to redesign the rollup doors with the building’s history in mind. Vernon explained, “There was a recommendation to look at alternate materials (for the eight rollup doors), but those are three times as expensive, and maintenance will be considerable.

The building next door has the same door I’m wanting to put on our building.”

Boardmember Jim Reginato cast the dissenting vote and said he preferred a wooden door and trim, but the other two voting boardmembers accepted the more industrial chic look of the proposed metal doors.

Wading into the election

I was born in Garfield, N.J., and my wife and I moved to Carpinteria over 32 years ago. Carpinteria is home to me and my family. My daughter MaryBeth married Martin Carty; my daughter Geri married Gregg Carty; my son Mike moved here, and my daughter Angela also followed my wife and I to Carpinteria. So Carpinteria has been home to my entire family for some time now.

It was only a short time after getting settled into life in Carpinteria that I met Wade Nomura and came to know him better in our community service through the Carpinteria Morning Rotary Club, where I was founding President. One thing in particular that I appreciate about Wade in his service to the City of Carpinteria as a City Councilman is that he cares deeply about our way of life here. He is protective of Carpinteria citizens and is smart in the way he conducts business.

I am writing this letter to tell people that I will be voting to re-elect Wade Nomura to City Council in the election on Nov. 8. I am confident that Wade will continue to serve our community with unselfish interests, and we need his continued leadership for our city. Looks like there is no stopping the cultivation of cannabis once Prop 64 passes.

Carpinteria has accepted responsibility for regulating an industry that currently has few protections for the land and sea and the life they sustain. The Coastal Commission is vigilant in its endeavor to protect our coastline from overdevelopment and the potential of polluting the waters we share with other countries and nations. Just over the Illinois/Wisconsin boarder is a World War II hemp factory once used for making rope. After years of attempting abatement the town now just lets it go to seed and nabs anyone they find looking to glean the fields. Fines to avoid prosecution have become part of the economy. Kids and others lured by stories that it is there for the picking are still drawn to the area, and violence and crime follow the Farmers Almanac as each crop matures. Carpinteria Arts Center to kick off campaign The quiet phase of fundraising has come to an end, and the Carpinteria Arts Center is shouting out the launch of its Building a Home for the Arts capital campaign. The public is invited to the kickoff party, which will take place Sunday, Oct. 23 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. with a special presentation and “unveiling” at 4 p.m.

The free afternoon event will feature fun, hands-on art activities for all ages, music, food and beverages including special art-themed cocktails. Attendees will be the first to learn about the plans for the future home of the Arts in Carpinteria, which aims to benefit the entire community.

David Powdrell, co-chair of the Carpinteria Arts Center board and chair of the Capital Campaign, stated, “The Arts Center leadership has been working behind the scenes to get a $3.1 million campaign off the ground. Much work has been done and we’ve seen a great outpouring of support since we began last November.”

The Arts Center purchased the 2,600-square-foot former Cajun Kitchen

building at 865 Linden Avenue last fall.

The $3.1 million will pay back the loan, create an operating endowment fund and pay for renovations to transform the former restaurant into a community arts center with classrooms, gallery spaces and offices. Powdrell hopes the community will step up to help reach the $3.1 million goal by the end of 2017 to avoid additional financing costs and get the project underway.

With the purchase of the Cajun building, the Arts Center dropped its plans to build a new, costlier building on the original site. Expanding into the Cajun building will cost less and preserve the large trees and well-loved outside courtyard.

“The chance to purchase the Cajun Kitchen building was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity we simply could not ignore,” said Powdrell. “We are well on our way to raising the funds needed, but to reach our goal we still need the support of everyone in the Carpinteria and South Coast communities to make Carpinteria one of the best small town arts communities in the country.”

Kent Thomas Weinberg

Kent Thomas Weinberg, with his parents and brother at his bedside surrounding him with love and comfort, was taken from his too short life in this world on Oct. 11, 2016, one day before his 32nd birthday.

Kent was born in Chico, Calif. and was raised in Carpinteria, part of the large, close-knit Weinberg family. After graduating from Carpinteria High School in 2003, he continued his education at Santa Barbara City College where he earned his AA degree in Liberal Arts.

Remembered by all as a sensitive, kind and generous soul, Kent was also known for his wickedly funny sense of humor, quirky outlook, open smile and contagious laugh. Being an avid reader of anything from Steven King to books on Feng Shui, he was a great conversationalist and a careful listener too. Kent’s true passion was music, but he also enjoyed movies and T.V., and was an early and longtime fan of “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy.” Always appreciative of good food, in particular his mother’s cooking, he spent many Sunday evenings at the weekly family dinner in his grandparents’ beachside Carpinteria home, often catching up with relatives or family friends from out of town. “Pama,” as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren and two more generations of children, will be greatly missed. Born and raised in New Zealand, her good old resiliency helped us through many ups and downs in life.

Dr. Warren F. Sears passed away on Oct. 10, 2016. His funeral service will take place on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1501 Linden Ave. in Carpinteria.

their love for him with excited greetings and sloppy kisses whenever he came home. Kent’s enthusiasm for projects and new experiences included travel and especially the family trip across Europe in 2001, and his trips to Boston in later years to visit his brother, Matt, and his wife, Molly. Never afraid of hard work, Kent gained real satisfaction from a job well done, always striving to complete it properly as his dad, Tom, had taught him.

Kent is survived by and forever held in the hearts of his parents, Tom and Bonnie Weinberg of Carpinteria, his brother Matt (Molly) Weinberg, niece and nephew Clara and Will Weinberg of Swampscott, Mass., and his grandparents Dick and Libby Weinberg of Carpinteria.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Cecelia and Harry Winters, formerly of San Rafael, Calif. His unique spirit, the “essence” of Kent, will be loved and remembered always by his many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A funeral Mass celebrating Kent’s life was held at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Carpinteria on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016.

It is the family’s great hope that our tragic loss will help shed light on the growing epidemic of drug addiction, which ultimately contributed significantly to Kent’s death. We pray that honest and open discussion of the issue will help lessen the shame often associated with it, promote a better understanding of its complexities and perhaps lead families to seek and find the resources needed to counsel and aid their loved ones in finding recovery. Our belief is that addiction is a disease and not a moral failure of those who have fallen victim to it.

And her special thoughtfulness, kindness and mischievousness taught us to enjoy life as well. She was always there for her daughters and grandkids, from teaching us how to make delicious homemade Christmas goodies, to sewing our own clothes, gardening, volunteering as a PTA member and homeroom mom, Brownie Scout leader, and making tutus for her youngest daughter’s dance class.

After retirement, she also volunteered as a docent at the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History for some years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen, and daughter, Stephanie. Remaining family are daughters Earlene Tracee deMoulpied, Shireen Janet Villa, Catherine Julia Esch and many wonderful grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren—twins just arrived last week and another to come in January! Thanks, Mom (Pama).

Flattery will get you everywhere. You like my outfit? I’ll wear it again soon! You appreciate my article? I’ll keep writing!

But of course, flattery and its close cousin praise don’t always work. If it doesn’t ring true, we lose a little faith in the person praising us. If we hear the same compliment over and over, it starts to fall flat, to feel insincere. We might even stop really hearing it. Using praise to teach or motivate is even more complicated when we are taking about raising kids.

It can get so bad that little ones only do the thing that adults are praising when they are praised. If you say “great job” every time baby takes a bite of green vegetables, baby may learn that green things are only to be eaten when mom or dad is paying close attention. Or let’s say you heap on the positive encouragement when your youngster is trying new tasks.

If that’s what you are paying attention to, a child may learn to try lots of things so she can get that praise, but she may end up with lots of things she’s tried but not finished.

Like pretty much all things having to do with parenting, there’s a little art and a little science here. We aim as parents to encourage children to be self-directed, responsible citizens of the world and ultimately to be successfully independent. We want our kids to grow up to have the persistence and fortitude that comes with being internally motivated. Praise, although we all use it, is more about external motivation, by definition coming from outside the child. We will (and should) give high fives to celebrate kids’ accomplishments and good decisions. With a little practice

and finesse we can also talk about kids’ qualities, actions and talk we want to see more of in ways that encourage them to do more of it just because they want to.

Kids get clues about what you care about by listening to what you say and what you react to. “I like the way you are walking slowly” communicates that you like slow walking and that you like when your child conforms to your wishes. An alternate approach is to notice the positive thing the child is doing: “You are walking slowly so you don’t fall.” This emphasizes the wisdom of the child’s thinking process (even if it is articulated in adult-speak) and gives him ownership of his actions.

It’s not about the adult giving the praise; the child is responsible for the good idea and wise action.

“The reward of a thing well done is having done it,” said Ralph Waldo Emerson. That pride we feel inside when we’ve accomplished something is it’s own reward. That’s the feeling what we want to cultivate in children. We are proud of them—and they should be proud of themselves!

Sixth-graders become citizen scientists

Have you ever wondered how to tell if a sand crab is male or female? Local sixthgraders from Carpinteria Middle School can tell you how. They went to the beach on Oct. 11 to collect data on the sand crab population. Sand and sand crabs were collected along a transect in 1 meter intervals. Students recorded the abundance, size (in millimeters, and those that are too small to measure, “recruits”) and sex (male, female or female with eggs). “The morning was very productive with all students finding sand crabs,” reported teacher Kim Castagna.

Students at Canalino School threw their bodies into the physical side of last month’s Jog-a-thon and put their hearts and minds into the fiscal side of the fundraiser. As staff and students learned at an Oct. 14 assembly, the event raised over $47,000 toward programs like P.E., swim lessons for third-graders and field trips. Top fundraisers were fifth-grader Carter Cox, who raised $4,630; third-grader Izzy Scott, $1,631; and her little brother, Trasitional Kindergartner Walker Scott, $1,550.

Ask the Candidates

Question: Many miles of Carpinteria’s roadways were constructed 50-plus years ago and now need millions of dollars to repair. The dedicated funds for such projects fall far short, and as a result, over the last couple years, the city’s general fund has subsidized roadway repairs to the tune of $500,000 annually. How should the city bridge the gap between street fix funding and cost?

If the City of Carpinteria were a body, its hardworking departments would be the hands while the City Council would be the decision-making brain. In this year’s election, Carpinterians will vote in two councilmembers from among the three candidates competing for the seats. Wade Nomura and Fred Shaw have served for four years and hope to serve another four. Bob Franco has thrown his hat in the ring in pursuit of a seat as well.

The City Council recently approved another step toward the development of a small inn and restaurant on Linden Avenue at the Amtrak Station parking lot. The city stands to raise significant revenues through the lease and bed tax collected from an inn, but some concerns have been raised about new development during a drought and the role of city government in commercial enterprise. How do you feel about developing an inn in that location?

Fixing our local and our country’s transportation infras t ru c t u re i s a problem that has perplexed the best transportation minds of our nation for years.

Many of our roads, bridges, tunnels, airports and freeways are in desperate need of repair throughout our nation, and Carpinteria is no exception.

It is a national disgrace and much of the problem lies with a dysfunctional and recalcitrant congress that refuses to act.

Congress can easily pass bills to begin repairing our nation’s infrastructure and provide thousands of well paying jobs.

Because alternate fuel and higher mileage vehicles are reducing gasoline use, we need to find a more equitable way to fund road repairs rather than just by an outdated gasoline tax.

Critical to our community is our support for a robust public transportation system and to find state and federal transportation funding sources that provide a permanent source of income to repair and preserve our roads. Everyone benefits from good roads, and it is vital to keep them maintained. However, our local roadways were not made to handle the ever increasing amount of local traffic and the larger weight of semi-trucks that are so ubiquitous in our community.

Previous City Councils have repeatedly kicked road maintenance down the road.

This is a failure of leadership and must be corrected. Because of this failure we have a critically underfunded liability to that is ours alone to deal with. We should prioritize and publish the repairs that must be done so that the community can grasp the scale of the problem.

Before my City Council experience, I hoped we could readily solve the issue of our deteriorating streets and infrastructure. I have realized the challenge lies not with lack of creative thinking or budget management but a lack of options for the City.

While Carpinteria streets are currently rated “good” on average, they need nearly $1 million yearly to maintain that level.

For this, Carpinteria depends on state and federal funding. The million dollars spent over the last two years are not regularly part of the budget. Our transportation tax funds are currently tied up with the 101 project or allocated to specific mandated programs.

State legislation will be reintroduced next session, freeing up to $7 billion in transportation funding for California cities. Much of this will be available through grants and projects for which Carpinteria will apply. Leveraged funds from County transportation taxes have allowed the city to revitalize some streets deemed “at risk.” A typical example of leveraged grant funding is the bridge replacement over Carpinteria Creek. The City will pay 11 percent and receive the other 89 percent from matching federal funds.

While we could charge for parking in the downtown and beach areas, the revenues would be insufficient to defray significant infrastructure costs and this might make spending time in the downtown less attractive for residents and visitors. As your Councilmember and Vice-President of the Channel Counties Division, California League of Cities, I will continue to pressure our state and federal government to fund local infrastructure repair.

The City has faced this problem for some time now. It’s true that the City has spent $500,000 annually for street repairs, however these repairs were done to the most needed and used streets, such as the latest project of Carpinteria Avenue and Casitas Pass Road in the downtown area, where the majority of the citizens benefit.

As we look to the future, other factors need to be included in this planning sequence. The City is faced with a water shortage, and one possible solution (and the most probable) is to use reclaimed water for the agricultural areas and for recharging the water table. This system will run new piping from the water treatment plant to the foothills of Carpinteria, where funds will probably be available for the project that could possibly include using roadways as the routes. There are also areas that still have overhead power lines that could qualify for the same possible undergrounding in the street right-of-way.

Trees, house hook-ups, heavy vehicle traffic add to the deterioration of streets, and we must be more proactive in preventing these from accelerating the problem. I have mentioned at a number of City Council meetings that we need to rate our street trees for root control before they start breaking roadways and sidewalks. Less tax money coming in for street repairs due to the more fuel efficient cars, needs to be restudied.

I have requested the City Council develop a strategic plan to address street repairs.

Question: A recent study found that CVWD and the Carpinteria Sanitary District could feasibly implement a recycled water project for the valley.

The plan under consideration involves injecting highly treated water into aquifers to replenish the groundwater supply that now provides a large portion of the district’s water. Do you think a recycled water project is the right choice for the district?

Water is always a hot topic in Carpinteria, and it has grown even hotter as drought years pile up and each predicted El Niño disappoints. This year voters will choose two directors for the Carpinteria Valley Water District. Three candidates, including incumbent Polly Holcombe, vie for two seats—Holcombe’s and that of retiring longtime director June Van Wingerden.

Reusing Sanitation District water can be a complementary alt ernat ive t o rainfall. Strategically located recharge basins, or injection wells, would be able to absorb all Sanitary District water.

Additionally, catching rainwater runoff for recharge can act as a supplement for our water needs. The Freeman diversion project at the Santa Clara River, in Ventura County, is an excellent example that proves rainwater runoff recharge is a viable option to help meet our water needs.

Lastly, desalinization can also be a complementary alternative water source.

I believe that scientific data needs to be the guide for the safest and best solution.

Question: Last year the school board considered implementing a Dual Language Immersion program to teach children in both English and Spanish from kindergarten to fifth-grade. The board decided against launching the program in the fall of 2016 and said it would be reconsidered for the fall of 2017. Would you support implementing a DLI program in CUSD? Why or why not?

Decisions that affect kids provoke high passion and strong opinions. As a result, school board members can be lauded as champions or criticized as villains. This year’s three candidates for school board are fresh faces to the challenges now facing the CUSD. Incumbents Terry Hickey Banks, a boardmember since 1995, and Alicia Jacobsen, who was appointed to replace Boardmember Alison Livett last September, are not seeking re-election.

Ask the Candidates launched on Oct. 6 with introductions to the trio of Carpinterians—Gary Blair, Maureen Foley Claffey and Rogelio Delgado—competing for two school board seats. Through Oct. 27, CVN will publish a series of Q&As to help voters make informed decisions.

Contract negotiations have been locked in impasse for months, and only through mediation is a resolution now close. Recycled water and saltwater conversion are the only “new” water options I see on the horizon. This is a complicated issue that is being thoughtfully studied, and there is a comprehensive report available called the Carpinteria Valley Recycled Water Facilities Plan, dated April 2016.

The report makes a strong case for recycling our treated water. There are legal, engineering and scientific issues to resolve.

I am in favor of bringing more water into the district but not with higher rates.

A Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program in Spanish would provide extensive academic and cultural enrichment to the students of Carpinteria.

I have already expressed deep support for this program, both at previous board meetings last spring and in a letter to the editor. Implementing a DLI Pilot Program at all elementary schools in Carpinteria would be a top priority. Many Carpinteria parents support this program and our teachers and principals have described the need for socially just curriculum that engages students academically. Now, the job of the board is to find creative ways to finance the DLI program effectively and to make it sustainable and successful in the future.

DLI programs provide all daily instruction in a single foreign language, providing “immersion” for students. In Carpinteria’s case, the language would be Spanish. Fluency in a foreign language, provided through DLI, promotes academic success and cross-cultural understanding.

Dual Language programs have many benefits. Last spring, I paraphrased Acting Education Secretary John B. King: “dual enrollment programs…can be ‘a vehicle to increase socioeconomic and racial diversity in schools.’” This is a win-win for a district where 70 percent of students identify as Latino and 38 percent are English Language Learners.

DLI works across the student body to heal cultural divides, challenge students academically and provide the tools to communicate bilingually for the future. A DLI program in Spanish will provide our students with invaluable language skills for the 21st Century workplace.

As a board member, I would be interested in further examining the details surrounding the concept of Dual Language Immersion (DLI).

As a bilingual and bi-cultural candidate, I value the concept of CUSD students becoming proficient in a second language. Second language acquisition also has the potential to open doors and increase opportunities for our students.

If there is sufficient interest in the community to support a DLI program, I would support the formation of an exploratory committee to plan such a program.

The outcome of Proposition 58 would be an important part of this planning process, as any bilingual education program needs to comply with State Law. Implementation would also depend on staffing needs, budget constraints and district philosophy. Parental input would be an important part of this planning process.

Bilingualism is a powerful advantage in the world of today. The power of bilingualism is reflected in the current job market, the expansion of cognitive skills and connections to other fields of learning. Students can look forward to a bright future with their enhanced skills in hand.

Carpinteria schools maintain high standards of achievement throughout the grades. Students are prepared to enter college and the workforce. CUSD can offer a wide range of options depending on interests and goals.

Dual Lang u a g e I m m e rsion (DLI) is a program that allows students to learn a second language commencing in Kindergarten and n o r m a l l y p ro ceeding through the fifth grade.

I am open minded about any program which provides an opportunity to enhance education and potentially reduce the academic achievement gap. DLI in our district would benefit English learner students whose native language is Spanish as well as students whose native language is English and who conversely desire to learn Spanish. Conceptually, I would consider supporting DLI, but there are several considerations.

My approach regarding potential implementation of any new program is to carefully scrutinize three essential areas. First, what is the evidence that the program has been successful in other districts in our region or within California? Second, is it cost neutral in terms of its fiscal impact? For example, will it be necessary to hire more teachers and if so, how will we fund that cost? Third, how strong is the community’s interest and do the parents or legal guardians have a choice in whether or not their children participate? In short, is the program optional or mandatory for pupils?

We must also consider that Proposition 58 is on the Nov. 8 ballot. If passed, it will restore bilingual education in California Schools and change certain statutory provisions. If a specified number of parents request a language acquisition program such as DLI, a school district would be required to provide it, “to the extent possible.”

We need to see if Proposition 58 passes.

We are close to major universities that study the issues and we have the luxury of wonderful geography to help us protect our groundwater. Being out front will bring grant money to the district that will be spent by others if we don’t act.

On the other hand, a mistake here can be catastrophic, so it is probably not enough take one study as the final word. Something as dramatic as injecting treated wastewater into our aquifer will need a very high level of confidence to be considered. As a retired aviator, let me add that an airline safety record of 99 percent would guarantee that no one would buy plane tickets. The decision to inject wastewater will need to be thought out with the same kind of thinking that makes modern aviation the safest way to travel.

Now, notwithstanding the recycled water project, we also need to keep the door open to possibly participate with the City of Santa Barbara for future desalination expansion phases. I said possibly.

Until our local groundwater basin and Lake Cachuma refill, all options should be under consideration. Other than substantial rainfall, there is no one silver bullet to address the drought. At least at this stage, the recycled water project appears to be promising and we simply don’t know enough yet to discard what could be a fundamental water resource for us.

Lou Grant preps extra special auction

The 39th Annual Lou Grant Parent-Child Workshop Auction and Lawn Party returns to its roots this year with a bash on Padaro Lane at the original home of the well-loved yearly fundraiser. The event, themed “Swing on a Star,” will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 3 to 7 p.m.

Plans include live music by Chasing Rainbows, a host of hors d’oeuvres, Island Brewing Company beer, wine and the auction’s ever-popular homemade desserts. The silent auction will include a tram tour of a local organic farm, staycation packages, creations by local artists, as well as many gift baskets and gift cards to local restaurants and businesses. Habitat for Humanity will throw a gala event on Saturday, Oct. 22 starting at 4 p.m. on the lawn of the Procore campus overlooking the Carpinteria bluffs and Pacific Ocean. The event benefits the Sawyer Avenue Affordable Homes project, which includes three 3-bedroom townhomes in downtown Carpinteria. Attendees will kick off the evening with a cocktail hour followed by dinner and live music. A live auction will offer opportunities to collectively the Sawyer Avenue project by bidding on individual elements of the homes— front door, the foundation and windows. His wife had to stay home and work. He monopolizes the family room watching loud action movies. I consider it totally inappropriate, but my husband thinks his son works hard and needs a break. I like his son and adore his children. What troubles me most is that he watches these with his 2-year-old on his lap. I have read that rapid fire images on TV harm brain development in young children and also may result in attention deficit disorder. I have offered to take the children to the beach or the zoo to give the young father a break, but he says he wants to take them by himself. Then he never does. I’m worried and frustrated.

How can I convince my husband to back me up?

SIGNED, NEEDING BACKUP DEAR NEEDING BACKUP, What kind of relationship does your husband have with his son? Your concerns are legitimate, and his failure to support you is a problem. He should respect your opinion and care enough about his grandchildren to intervene. Is your husband able to talk to his son in any helpful way? How old was the son when his parents got divorced? Is there guilt that he wasn’t around when the son needed him? This is a time for him to pay attention to his son and show affection and interest in his life. Maybe the two of them could take a long walk together and try to clear up old wounds, if there are any. Show your husband proof of your worries about the children and plead with him to take you seriously. Do this in the most calm and loving way you can.

DEAR DONNIE, I have been dating a wonderful man for the last couple of months. He is new to this area and we’re having so much fun discovering all there is to do here. We have not delved much into our pasts, but the better I know him the more I think he is the ex of one of my co-workers. Should I tell her we are dating?

SIGNED, IGNORANCE IS BLISS DEAR BLISS, Before you say anything to her, talk to your new boyfriend. Once couples are divorced they don’t control the social life of one another. He probably knows where his ex lives and works and where you work. Maybe he planned to discuss it with you when he knew you better. If you’re getting serious with this man, it’s time to be more open with each other.

DEAR DONNIE, My brothers and I just hosted a 50th anniversary party for my parents at a nice hotel. I was shocked that those who never RSVPed showed up anyway and others felt free to bring extra guests. The

worst was when guests arrived right in the middle of the meal and expected to be seated and served anyway. The invitations clearly stated the time and place and included reply cards. Admittedly some relatives are young and may not be aware of the meaning of RSVP, but nothing in the invitation would lead them to believe it was an open house. I’m miffed. What should I do?

SIGNED, RSVP R-E-S-P-E-C-T DEAR RSVP, Too late now, but for the future don’t use RSVP. All of your problems have become way too common, and a more creative approach is needed. Hotels and caterers charge by the number you give them and can usually accommodate a few more. Reply cards with entree choices are a good way to get a response. Be sure to include a “reply by” date and stick to it.

It seems the number of guests with poor manners is growing.

DEAR DONNIE, I just turned 45 and I’m starting to get some gray hairs. My husband is blond and his gray hairs don’t show. He has asked me to dye my hair. I hate that dyed look. What shall I do?

SIGNED, TO DYE OR NOT TO DYE? DEAR TO DYE, Go to a good hairdresser and tell him or her how you feel. There are ways of frosting, highlighting and bleaching. You could even get a wig. Do your gray hairs make your husband insecure? A good haircut and style along with good makeup and attractive clothes can make any woman look good even with a little gray.

As we get older we have to try harder because aging is inevitable. I was happy when my dark hair finally turned white.

DEAR DONNIE, My 77-year-old mother has dementia and her care is becoming way too much for my 75-year-old father. I think they should both move into a retirement community that would accommodate their separate needs. This would entail selling their home and getting rid of a lifetime of possessions. It is daunting to all of us in the family. What is your advice?

Carpinteria prepares for Open Streets

Next spring, Linden Avenue may be temporarily taken over by cyclists, walkers, joggers, dancers, skaters, soccer players—anything but automobiles.

This is part of an Open Streets initiative, which encourages cities to close streets to automobile traffic for a day and, instead, encourage foot and bicycle traffic. If the event is approved for its proposed date of April 1, 2017, it will join a list of over 200 cities worldwide to participate in the initiative. “Each community does it differently. It all depends on the local community and how they decide to participate,” said Robin Elander, one of the event coordinators.

Elander explained, “These are generally very active events.” Open Streets events in other cities have included activities such as group yoga, cycling courses, exercise classes, street hockey, live music and dances. “We want it to be fun and accessible for people of all ages and backgrounds. The sky is the limit for how people can engage.”

Kent Epperson of Santa Barbara Traffic Solutions said that the event will be great for teaching bicycle safety. “We’re planning to work with the community to organize bike rodeos, obstacle courses and safety events.” Epperson also believes that the event will promote long-term community health. “In Carpinteria, we really want to encourage regular walking and biking as a lifestyle. People can exercise as they walk or bike to the event and continue exercising as they enjoy the fun physical activities taking place along the Open Streets route.”

The proposed route runs 1.25 miles and includes lengthy sections of Linden Avenue, 8th Street and 9th Street. Because large portions of the route run through residential areas, Epperson hopes that the event will encourage people to come out and meet their neighbors.

“We want this to feel like a block party.

We’re inviting 8th and 9th street residents to partner with each other to organize

activities for the event.”

The decision to hold an Open Streets event in Carpinteria follows the success of three Open Streets events in Santa Barbara. Epperson explained, “These past events really paved the way for learning what does and doesn’t work. The biggest factor is taking the time to do it right and working with the community to make sure that it’s all a good experience.

In particular, we want to work with 8th and 9th Street residents to make sure that everyone is informed and not burdened by the event.”

Epperson believes that Carpinteria is a great location for Open Streets. “The size is really what makes it unique. I think the neighborhood, small-town feel will be great for the event.” Epperson also emphasized that the event route connects with bus, train and bike routes, which will make it very accessible to locals and outof-towners alike. “The nature of the event will really encourage local connectivity.”

Planning for the Carpinteria Open Streets event has been a collaboration between several local organizations, including the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition, SB Traffic Solutions, Global Good Impact, the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Carpinteria Arts Center.

Epperson said that they are collectively working to ensure that the event is a very safe and positive experience for everyone.

“We want to do a really good job thinking through the impact on the community before submitting for a formal permit.”

Elander is very excited to work with fellow organizers to continue the outreach process and grow community partnership for hosting activities during the event. “We want to get the streets animated! With enough community engagement, there’s always the potential for repeats.”

Carpinteria was well represented at last weekend’s Festivus Games held at Crossfit Oxnard with six teams in four divisions entering the competiton from Foxwing Fitness/Crossfit Carpinteria.

Over 100 athletes from throughout Southern California competed in the day-long event on Saturday, Oct. 15. Athletes competed in four different pre-announced workouts (WODs), ranging from six to 11 minutes in time, designed to test strength and endurance. Following the results, the top five teams in each division competed for spots on the podium. Carpinterians Johnny Ward and Tanner Wing brought home second-place medals in the Men’s Intermediate Division; brothers Richard and Christopher Worley earned first-place medals in the Men’s Masters (45+) Division; and Lalo Vital and Mike VanStry walked away with third-place medals in the Men’s Masters (45+) Division.

In its third year, the Festivus Games is a world-wide functional fitness competition for beginner and intermediate athletes. The rules say, “No fire breathers!”

The next competition is slated for April 2017 and will be hosted by Crossfit Oxnard.

Doc Carty Classic crowns 2016 volleyball royalty

The volleyball courts at Linden Beach are always good for some competition and exercise, but once a year the competitive spirit spikes when the Doc Carty Classic invites some of the finest beach volleyball players to the sand for a full day of play that benefits youth sports. This year’s classic, organized by Dan Terry, raised money for Carpinteria High School volleyball teams. The annual fall volleyball tournament is named after the late, Dr. William “Doc” Carty, who was a volleyball devotee, longtime superintendent of Carpinteria schools and an active community servant.

After a discouraging string of losses, the Warriors locked in an early lead against Trinity Classical Academy last Friday night and held it tight to secure a 40-24 victory. “We took a big step up, especially on the offensive line,” reported Coach Ben Hallock. “It was great to have some drives for touchdowns. Defensively we made some stops in key situations to help secure positive field position for our offense.”

Warriors start their Frontier League season this Friday, Oct. 21 against Fillmore. The homecoming game kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium.

Cate defense leads victory over Orcutt

The Cate football team knocked off the second top-10 ranked, eight-man foe in as many weeks on Oct. 15 when the Rams held off the Spartans of Orcutt Academy in a 17-14 defensive battle.

All of the Cate offensive fireworks came in the first half, and it started early.

On the first possession of the game, senior Pierce Lundt took a handoff from sophomore Jack Deardorff and muscled his way three yards into the end zone. The Rams then got a field goal from senior Juan Magalhaes to make it 10-0. The final Cate score came on a deep, 40-yard toss from Deardorff to senior Chase McCaw. The defense was the story of the day, as the front line combination of juniors Eric Yi and Chris Bennett, and senior Mateo Luca-Lion stuffed the would be Spartan runners all afternoon. Senior Henry Dawson and sophomores Drew Anastasio and Carson Williams did a great job setting the edge. Meanwhile, juniors Luke Beckman and Will Bowlin, along with senior Ryder Dinning, made sure tackles all game long. Dinning also recorded an interception on the day.

When you play good teams, wins aren’t always pretty. As a team I think we worked very well against Orcutt. Our offense needed a pick-me-up, and our defense was there to help. Cate returns home, hosting their final regular season game on Saturday, Oct. 22 against the Laguna Blanca Owls. Kickoff for the Condor League contest is at 2 p.m.

Junior Warriors close impressive first season

Two of Carpinteria’s Junior Warriors teams advance to the youth football playoffs this week.

Carpinteria’s newest youth athletic program, Junior Warriors football just closed its first season with two teams qualifying for the playoffs. The Mighty Might Team finished its regular season second in its division with six wins and one loss. The Sophomore Team also finished in second with a 6-1 record. The Seniors finished their regular season in ninth with 1 win and 7 losses. The Mighty Mights take on Santa Paula on Saturday, Oct. 22. at 10 a.m. at Carpinteria High School, 4810 Foothill Road, and the Sophomores face newbury Park gold at noon. If the teams advance again, on Oct. 29, they will play for a spot in the Super Bowl.

october 12 - The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team fell to Villanova Prep of Ojai 16-15 in sudden death overtime. Senior Sal briceno scored four goals, junior Connor Van wingerden scored two goals and fellow junior wyatt Stevenson scored three. Seniors malek mehai and Forrest Van Stein scored two and one, respectively, while junior Jordan Perez registered three. The Warriors were ahead 10-7 going into the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats outscored the Warriors 6-3 to tie the game at the buzzer, 1313. After two three-minute periods of overtime with the score still tied, Villanova ultimately scored the final goal in sudden death to take the win.

october 11 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team hosted Santa Clara and prevailed over the Saints, 3-1. Starting outside hitter Corina Porter ended up with a personal record-high 23 kills, which was also a Warrior season record.

october 13 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team hosted the Cardinals of Bishop Diego, falling to their rivals 3-0. Starting outside hitter Corina Porter recorded seven kills. Middle hitter gabriela rigonati had five kills. Junior and starting middle blocker Shaya alexander ended the night with five blocks and three kills.

“Bishop’s defense was excellent; it was too much to handle for Carpinteria,” said Warrior coach Dino Garcia. Carpinteria fell to 8-5 overall and 8-2 in Frontier league play.

The Warriors will host Santa Paula tonight, Oct. 20, for a “senior night” home game.

Cate School

october 13 - The Cate School cross country team participated in the second TCAA league meet at Elkins Ranch in Fillmore with the boys finishing fifth and the girls finishing eighth. Junior Kyril Van Schendel was second in the race with a time of 16:08.

Sophomore Josh Shields continued his season with a 31st place finish in 18:37, followed by co-captain Henry walsh in 34th with a time of 18:45. On the girls side, junior isabela montes de oca led the team with a 12th place finish in 20:42. bella Hillyer was 20th in 21:43, followed by freshman lina infante in 55th at 25:05. Senior co-captain Serena Soh was 59th in 25:43 and sophomore biba Duffy-boscagli, 61st in 25:47.

october 13 - The Cate School girls tennis team beat La Reina 12-6 again to ensure a repeat of the Tri-Valley league title. “Jackie Cai played some of her best tennis of the season today, and grace Fuss was tough as nails against La Reina’s number-two (Tiara Nourishad),” said Rams coach Trevor Thorpe. Cate is now 8-1 on the season, 6-0 in league play. “i also felt our singles players competed much better against la Reina’s top two players today,” added Thorpe. The Rams end the regular season with a home match on Friday, Oct. 21 against Carpinteria High School that coincides with Parents Weekend at Cate.

october 13 - The Carpinteria High School girls golf team finished its Tri-Valley league season at the Santa Barbara Golf Club with senior Juliet Parsons leading the way, shooting a 47. The Warriors prevailed 255 to 302 over Nordhoff to finish at 8-4 in league and 9-4 overall. mikayla blair and amanda blair each shot a 49 in the win.

Now what?

a monthly muse melinda wittwer After the mammogram that brought me face to face with breast cancer and the talk with the radiologist and the meeting with the surgeon and the biopsy that left a metal chip in my body, I am still waiting for the results from my genetic testing.

Will there be a mutation on my BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes? If yes, would it be worth it to have a double mastectomy?

I call my doctor when I become tired of waiting for the results but have to leave a message. Long after 5 p.m., an unknown number flashes on my phone. I pick up and a voice identifies herself as my surgeon’s nurse. She just wants to make sure I know my test results are finally in. I wait for what seems years until her voice says, “All is good. Your results are negative.”

On my end of the phone I’m tap dancing, smiling and so very relieved. A simple lumpectomy sounds quite doable when compared with the more drastic surgery.

And I’m so very grateful this nurse stayed late to make all her calls.

In the next few days my lumpectomy is scheduled and I’m headed in to get an EKG to make sure my heart is OK when my phone rings again. This time it is a nurse navigator from the Santa Barbara Cancer Center. Since I’m nearby we agree to meet in her office after my EKG. She is informative and supportive and assures me I can contact her anytime. It seems I now have an official hand-holder that will guide me through this maze of medical jargon, diagnostic tests, treatments and panic attacks. On to surgery.

No water or food after midnight. Up early, my husband and I drive to the hospital’s center for advanced imaging to have a needle and a wire inserted in my breast to pinpoint the area the surgeon will remove. Once that is done and an access port for an IV is put in my arm, I’m ready to be driven to the outpatient surgery location. But first I have to have my husband close the car door and put on my seatbelt—both hard to do with wires and ports poking out of my body.

Needless to say this whole process seems awkward and slightly disjointed. I just want this over with.

Once I’m prepped for surgery, complete with a snuggly warming blanket, I’m visited by my anesthesiologist, my surgical nurse and my surgeon. I’m comforted, informed and warned about what to do, what not to do, what to expect and what all the possible outcomes are. Time to go—surgical centers are no-nonsense places. Within minutes I’m moved to the operating table, nurses and techs bustle around me, and without notice I’m completely out, aware of nothing until I try to open my eyes and realize I’m back in my little curtained corner with my husband watching me.

My upper torso is bound tightly in an elastic wrap, and my wires are removed.

It takes me a while to become totally awake. I’m warned about bleeding, lifting items over 10 pounds and told not to drive for 24 hours. Time to go home. I need food, water and more rest. At least I’m not nauseous and in very little pain, just light-headed. My surgeon stops by to see me off. He tells me all looks good, but (why is there always a but these days?) he would call when he had the test results back to see if all the margins were clear.

So here I am with another waiting game. Will the news come back that the margins are clear or will I have to go in for another surgery? Life goes on. I try not be anxious, but the worry is always there— sometimes front and center, sometimes waiting just around my next thought.

I start counting, one day after another anticipating one more call. Finally, late one afternoon my surgeon calls to explain that one side of the area he removed does not have a clear enough margin so we need to schedule another surgery. I backpedal and put him off telling him I’ll call tomorrow to discuss a date. Maybe I can avoid this second surgery if I just procrastinate.

My family does not agree. Do it tomorrow is their recommendation. With a little pushing (OK a lot of pushing), I schedule the second lumpectomy for as soon as possible. At least this time I won’t have to have a wire inserted. If only I could forget about operations and surgeons and test results and treatments – at least for a few weeks. Cancer killed my father and my cousin, two of my aunts and two of my uncles. Cancer maimed my mother and her sister. It’s hard for me to forget. It’s hard for me not to be afraid.

Triton swimmers speed to finish

At last weekend’s swim meet held at the Carpinteria Community Pool, four local competitors from the Tritons Swim Team gave impressive performances.

Taylor Classen dropped time in her 50 back stroke with a new record of 38.68. Eli Sheaffer logged a new time of 52.84 in the 50 back, and his older brother Augie Sheaffer finished the 100 free with a new time of 1:12.25. Asher Smith swam the 50 back in 43.69. “Overall the meet was a success. The Triton swimmers had a chance to swim at their home pool and show all the other teams what the Carp Tritons were all about,” stated coaches Armando Ramos and Morgan Youngs.

Local artists join the “Herd”

Carpinteria artists Julie Montgomery, Pamela Enticknap, Patricia Clarke and Stuart Carey in collaboration with Steven Sorensen are contributors to Herd Around the World, the upcoming exhibition at Santa Barbara Center for Arts, Sciences and Technology (SBCAST), 513 Garden Street. The show, a photographic opus by conceptual artist RT Livingston, includes over 200 photographs taken by both artists and nonartists of plastic farm animals in various places around the globe. The photographers, dubbed “herders,” will have their works displayed in four gallery spaces that serve as holding stalls for photographs, installations and video. Dia de los Muertos prep turns up

Many months of preparation have gone into the weekend-long celebration of dia de los Muertos set to take place on oct. 29 and 30. organizers Lisa Thomas and Carlos Cuellar have been working with Carpinteria Middle and High School students to create art pieces for exhibit on Saturday, oct. 29 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club. The exhibit will include live music, authentic food, art workshops for the whole family and unique vendors. Leading into the art show at the Woman’s Club, a parade with dancers, floats and giant puppets will begin at 4 p.m. at the Carpinteria Library, 5141 Carpinteria Ave. The celebration continues on Sunday, oct. 30 with an afternoon of art workshops that kick off with a ceremonial dance and presentation on the history of dia de Los Muertos at 1 p.m. at the Carpinteria Arts Center, 855 Linden Ave. Three different art workshops will follow between 1 and 4 p.m.

What butcher knife?

On Oct. 3 at approximately 9:25 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the Mormon Church at 1501 Linden Ave. on a report of a transient male with a large butcher knife threatening people. A Sheriff’s deputy made contact with the man at Tomol Drive and Malibu Drive, but did not see a knife or other weapon in the man’s hands or on his person. The deputy asked the man to sit on the curb while he waited for another deputy. When a sergeant arrived, they placed the man in handcuffs and advised him that he was not under arrest but being detained while the deputies figured out what was going on. The transient gave the deputies permission to search his person as well as his backpack.

Upon finding a metal pipe in the man’s backpack, deputies were told that it was a bicycle seat post and that that man did not want or need it. The deputy “booked it into property” for safekeeping. Asked where he was going, the man said he was trying to get out of Carpinteria and was released without further incident.

On Oct. 8 at approximately 11:22 p.m., a deputy responded to a citizen reporting possible domestic violence. The caller described a female pushing a stroller with two children in it and a male walking with her. According to the caller, the two were involved in some sort of altercation and the male had pushed the female over.

Upon arriving at Elm and Carpinteria avenues, a deputy observed a man he knew sitting on the sidewalk. The man stood up as the deputy approached, and the deputy noticed a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from the man’s person. The deputy noted that the man was expressing anger through his facial expression and body language.

When the deputy advised the man that he was responding to a call about a dispute the man replied, “I don’t know.

I couldn’t care less. I’ve had it with that b-----.” The deputy stated that he made several attempts to gather information about what had happened between the man and his wife, but the only response the man gave was, “If you’re going to

arrest me then arrest me.”

Additional deputies arrived to check the area for the parties involved, and one of those deputies then asked the man for his ID, which he refused to provide.

When the deputy asked the man about his children, the man became “extremely angry” according to the reporting deputy. “(Name withheld) puffed out his chest and appeared to be about ready to fight with the deputy,” stated the report.

Determining at that point that the man was too intoxicated to care for his own or other’s safety, and that he would like injure someone or himself, the deputy placed him under arrest and transported the man to Santa Barbara County Jail.

On Oct. 10 at about 6:45 a.m., two deputies were dispatched to a mobile home park on Via Real on a report of a man having broken into a car. The man who had called the Sheriff’s department was detaining the individual he accused of breaking into his vehicle until they arrived. The reporting deputy wrote that he observed a Toyota sedan with its front passenger side window shattered and the contents of the car scattered about both inside and outside. A man was sitting on the curb next to the vehicle. The man said he’d been riding past on his bicycle when he noticed the car had been broken into. He said he went to look through the items inside to try to determine who the owner of the car was. The deputy then read the man the admonition of rights because he had admitted to going inside the vehicle and taking belongings that were not his. The

man acknowledged that he understood his rights. The man said that the owner of the car had arrived and told him he was going to call the police, and the man accused of breaking into the car then told the deputy that he had not run, but waited until they showed up.

The deputy then spoke with the man whose car had been broken into, and the man told the deputy that he had seen the man inside his car, going through his things. The car owner reported that the man he was accusing had had a black and red tool in his hand, and that the owner of the vehicle believed that was what he’d used to break the window. The car owner also said that the other man had his knife in his waistband, and that the owner of the car had taken it back from him. A second deputy stated that he’d seen the accused man throw something over a nearby wall as he pulled up. The reporting deputy looked over the wall and found a black and red cordless drill, which he retrieved and then photographed with the damage to the vehicle and its scattered contents. The car owner confirmed that the cordless drill was the tool the man was holding when he first spoke to him at his car.

The suspect was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail. En route, the man made threats to the effect that he was going to “f--- that guy up,” and, “That guy was going to get knocked… he is going to get checked.” The deputy sought to clarify who the man meant and he said, “That pisa (sic) whose window got busted.” Based on those statements, and the deputy’s judgment that the man “has the means and the intention to inflict harm upon (name withheld)” and the fact that the man “lives locally, not far from (name withheld), and (the man’s) history of arrests for theft and drug related crimes means that (the man) has a history of making poor/bad choices and has access to (name withheld) to carry out the threats,” the deputy charged him with burglary and making criminal threats.
