Police chief says parolees not dropped in Carpinteria

Rumors that out-of-town parolees are regularly dropped off at Carpinteria’s Motel 6 on Via Real were laid to rest this week. Lieutenant Mike Perkins, the senior-most Sheriff’s Department representative in Carpinteria, said in an interview on Nov. 4 that parolees are not dropped off in Carpinteria upon their release from state prison or from county jail in Ventura. Perkins reported that he had called the probation department in Ventura and “asked pointedly” if that agency had a program of releasing parolees in Carpinteria. Ventura probation responded that they do not have such a program.

Speaking to the possibility of a cover-up, Perkins said, “Why would I condone other agencies bringing problem people to my community? It’s just not happening.”

Santa Barbara City College Center for Lifelong Learning has opened registration for its spring semester, which includes 95 new classes. Rancho Monte Alegre primed for auction

BY LEA BOYD A 3,000-acre portion of the Carpinteria foothills will be auctioned by a luxury real estate firm on Dec. 7. Rancho Monte Alegre, which includes 17 buildable lots ranging in size from 40 to 150 acres each, is listed for $32 million and being sold to the highest bidder. The historic property begins near Foothill Road at Santa Monica Road and stretches all the way to the Los Padres National Forest.

The effort to develop the ranch began in the late 1990s and has been a long, drawn-out and costly process. Current owner Garrison Investment Group of New York acquired the project in 2010, at the height of the recession, from Rancho Monte Alegre Partners.

Extensive infrastructure construction has occurred in phases over the years, first by RMA Partners, then Garrison.

Carpinteria Valley Water District annexed the property and built a groundwater storage tank on the ranch. Roads and a bridge over Santa Monica Creek have been built to access a handful of the developable lots. Progress on the development, however, has stalled in recent years.

Purchased in the late 1800s by Joel Fithian and known for most of Carpinteria’s history as the Fithian Ranch, the property was sold to RMA Partners in the 1990s.

The developers promptly met public resistance to extensive construction in the foothills. As a result, the Land Trust of Santa Barbara County worked with RMA Partners to create a 2,700-acre conservation easement, with specific areas set aside for agriculture and to preserve existing wilderness.

The ranch is just outside city limits at 1820 Santa Monica Road. The land is private, and trespassing is illegal.

Parcels are already designated with residential and agricultural envelopes, which would simplify the process of securing a residential building permit through Santa Barbara County. The Dec. 7 auction will be conducted by Concierge Auctions. The property will be auctioned without reserve, meaning there is no minimum bid.

Historic buildings in the lower reaches of the ranch, near Foothill Road, are now individually owned. The remainder of the development for sale includes 17 buildable lots.

Rancho Monte Alegre, located at Foothill and Santa Monica roads, was long known as the Fithian Ranch by Carpinterians.

The saddest swan song CVN

TALKING ABOUT WATER STEVE NICOLAIDES It’s almost Thanksgiving, and for the last couple of months I’ve felt like I turned into a preacher. As a punk teenager who never really took to preachers, I want to say to all my readers, thanks for the encouragement and putting up with the sermons, but I’m done. We are all adults and we all know the consequences of our actions. Waste not, want not. Simple. War blankets our culture, fear is the currency of our dialogue, but the only war worth paying attention to is the war to save our planet. So this column is my farewell.

My wife Caroline and I finally got a vacation after about three years, and we went to Berlin, Germany. And man, was that a bad move. First, our magnificent dog Reno died on our porch in his sleep, and then our beautiful son Aaron was hospitalized and diagnosed with cancer.

He was 39 years old, the happy father of two little girls, one two-and-a-half, one just six-weeks-old. In one month, we lost them both. No parent should ever have to say goodbye to their kid. Yet in the middle of all this crap, I had this dream. Happy holidays and peace and love to you all.

The widows from under the trees

In the beautiful river valley there is a weekly market. Traders from the north and the south come because the market is always stocked with wonderful food, all grown or raised by widows, women who survived their husbands. They live under the tall trees that line the shore, and their gardens are deep and rich and produce an incredible bounty.

These widows insist on one rule for the market: all profit must be spent on the welfare of the children in the village. Feed them and educate them. Nurture them.

If your kids are smart and healthy, your community has a chance to be strong.

Everyone agrees with this rule. Up and down the river.

The widows are a strong group of friends. Their husbands protected the village, fought invaders and conceived of a way of life that could be sustained. Like most men, they checked out too early.

Their women didn’t miss a beat. Grow the herd. Protect what really matters.

Then one day, a warlord sailed down the river and stopped at the market.

He saw the bounty; he saw the money;

he saw what should be his. So he brought out the weapons; he brought out the thugs; he brought out the threats. And the widows listened to him, and when he said screw the kids, this was now his bounty, they smiled and promised to provide a huge celebration for him in one week’s time.

But no one believed this. Not the widows, not the warlord. The women conceived of a large baked pie, part vegetable and part fruit, so big it could feed the whole village. And in each individual section made by each fierce widow, there would be poison that wouldn’t kill a man for a single bite, but would kill him dead if he ate the whole pie. After all, gluttony is the curse of the rich.

So the next market day came, and the widows from under the trees came down the mountain with their bounteous creation, and the warlord sailed into the harbor. We all know evil is not stupid, so the warlord thanked the widows but insisted that one of them take the first bite.

The leader of the group, Judy, stepped forward. She showed no hesitation, no fear. But she was scared to death. Bravely she picked up a fork and took a bite. All the widows were staring at her. She swallowed the bite, smiled. She took another bite, handed the fork to the warlord. He took a bite.

Judy turned to the widows. One by one they dropped their eyes, ashamed. Judy realized no one had actually poisoned the pie. At this moment the warlord realized it too. They were not trying to kill him. He smiled. And he told them he was sailing away never to return, and the way they lived in this village was just fine with him. Support your kids. You don’t need hatred and killing. Compassion is the stronger choice.

I really had this dream. Happy holidays to all! Love you, Aaron and Reno!

I’ll never understand what just happened.

Our community lost an amazing woman last week. Barbara Riggs passed on, leaving a legacy of love, generosity and goodwill. She fulfilled many vital roles in her life: daughter, wife, mother, friend.

Additionally, she will be remembered by the hundreds of children and families whose lives she shaped as a teacher and a Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters.

It’s people like Barbara who make our community great. Barbara joined our program six years ago because, as a teacher, she saw how important it is for young people to have a stable mentor. She was paired with Little Sister Donna, a quiet, yet bright child. Barbara dedicated herself to Donna, spending time with her each week, engaging Donna in her community and her education. The impacts Barbara had on Donna and her family were tremendous. Even while battling her illness, Barbara continued to plan for the well being of her Little Sister, contacting me to ensure Donna has the resources to live a happy, fruitful life, well into adulthood.

While Barbara’s passing is heartbreaking, her life serves as a reminder that each of us has, within ourselves, the capacity to positively change the world by connecting with others. All of us at Family Service Agency and Big Brothers Big Sisters are incredibly thankful for Barbara’s compassion and dedication to the well being of our community’s children. Barbara’s spirit will live on—in each life she touched and in each family she helped.

guage Immersion program that, in my opinion, is nothing more than another attempt to revive bilingual education.

This program was nothing more than education in Spanish and was proven over many years to be a complete failure. Bilingual teachers received an extra pay stipend and schools received extra funding for every student enrolled in the program. They rarely transitioned any student out because that would result in a loss of funding.

I taught music for many years in the district and had many students that the system labeled “non-English speakers.”

These students did just as well as native English speakers. They actually understood English far better than the flawed bilingual system would ever admit.

Years ago, with mounting criticism, an interesting “last ditch effort” was proposed in Santa Barbara. Franklin School, with almost 100 percent Hispanic students, was divided into two schools, each with a separate principal and separate staffs. One half was the typical bilingual program. The other half was total English immersion. Parents were allowed to choose which one their child attended. In the end, test scores proved that the English immersion students improved greatly. The bilingual students continued to fail.

Even though voters eliminated bilingual education, we now have Proposition 58, which seeks to bring it back. The bureaucrats want their cash cow back.

They refuse to admit that the primary function of schools should be to best meet the needs of students. English immersion works every place that it is tried.

“Dual Language” advocates will try to convince you that English speakers will learn Spanish. Nothing could be further from the truth. We must always do what is best for kids.

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY First and foremost, a confession. I am a perpetual Pollyanna. Realities such as chaos, clamor and near catastrophe are no match to the everlasting optimism that all will be OK, that dessert is always on the horizon.

Which leads me, and all of us, to this.

Like it, love it or bah-humbug it, the holidays are here, and with them, the gatherings of family from near and far.

How about a new tradition to accompany the old? Why not take this opportunity to sit with family elders in a quiet room, ask a few questions and collect precious stories?

Am I crazy, you may interject. Was I not just talking about the chaos, the clamor and the near catastrophe? Who has time to sit in a quiet room to talk about the past when there is a pageant of food to put on the table and televised football games to shout at?

Witness a glimpse of my own family during Thanksgiving, 1973. You might think I found the worst photo we have, but this is actually one of just two that I found in all the family albums. Never having time for proper pictures, my mother must have picked up the flashcube camera and snapped this on her way back to the kitchen. How charming am I? How charming is my little sister, as she once again succeeds in getting into every photo, even if it’s just an arm?

Looking at that photo, I remember who had time. My siblings and I had time. So, got kids? This would be a great project for them! (Kids, hate me now, but you’ll be grateful one day. You won’t even have to put down your phones because the recording app is just waiting for such an important assignment!) Instead of the kids being asked all the questions they

don’t want to answer, have them lead the grandparents and aunts and uncles into a back room to conduct short, one-on-one interviews.

Some relatives may be reluctant to talk about themselves, but they can be enticed.

Ask first about their grandparents—what they did, where they came from, and what values they passed on—and watch them light up. Ask what they liked to do with their parents and grandparents. You might hear stories about feather-bees, oranges in the Christmas stockings, or balls of lightening coming through the kitchen window. It won’t be long before they become comfortable and will be more willing to talk about themselves.

Ask about favorite childhood memories of the holidays, and they may tell about pre-dinner exploding garbage disposals, fun at the kids’ table, intact bags of giblets inside cooked and beautifully presented birds or impromptu blizzards that turned the meal into an overflowing, two-day slumber party.

If conducting single interviews is not in the cards, all is not lost. Simply plant any recording device in the centerpiece on the table and allow it to be a silent witness to the festivities. Along with the “what are you most thankful for this year?” question, ask about the first pet everyone had, what food was hated as a child or a most embarrassing moment in school.

The answers will lead to much laughter and more questions, everyone will be surprised by something, and there is sure to be found a firmer connection with that crazy bunch we call family.

Give it a try. Pollyanna says it’s possible and promises it will be fun and rewarding. Now, I ate the peas—where’s the pie?

Barbara Anne Riggs, 62, loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and beloved teacher passed away Oct. 31, 2016 at Serenity House surrounded by loved ones. She fought a hard battle with breast cancer with quiet bravery. Barbara is predeceased by her parents, Virginia and Robert Riggs. She is survived by her husband Tom Kelley, sons Devon and Logan Kelley, sister Cynthia Riggs-French (Keith), brother Donald Riggs (Rita) and brother–in- law Brian (Kathy) Kelley. She also leaves behind nieces and nephew, Sarah and Christopher French, and Briana and Chelsea Kelley.

Barbara attended high school in Scotia, N.Y. then graduated and received her degree and teaching credential from Russell Sage College. She maintained a close relationship with many of her high school

and college classmates. In 1984 Tom and Barbara moved to California. She began her teaching career at Rainbow School in Goleta and then taught for Carpinteria Unified School District. In her years at Aliso School she made an indelible impact on the lives of her beloved kindergarten students and their families and earned the respect of her colleagues. She worked tirelessly in the classroom taking on the added responsibilities of master teacher as well as leadership roles within the district. She touched the lives of hundreds of students, many of whom remember her as their favorite teacher. Barbara found time in her busy schedule to earn her Masters Degree, with emphasis on social justice, from Antioch University.

Barbara was playful and adventurous.

After an amazing cruise that took her through the Mediterranean, she arrived home wanting to visit more of the world.

She was an enthusiastic participant in The World Dance for Humanity, and one year, after a liberal application of spooky makeup in preparation for the Thriller dance at the Santa Barbara Courthouse, her costume was so convincing that her own dog didn’t recognize her and growled at the creepy stranger who suddenly appeared in the living room! She joined Big Brothers and Big Sisters and shared a loving relationship with her little sister Danna.

Persoon appointed to fill superintendent gap

By Lea Boyd The Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education voted 3-2 at its Nov. 8 meeting to appoint Canalino School Principal Jamie Persoon as the district’s top administrator during the search for a permanent superintendent. Interim Superintendent Brian Sarvis is approaching an earning limit, which, if exceeded, would force him to forfeit his retirement pay. Persoon will begin picking up some of the superintendent duties now in order for Sarvis to stretch his employment with the district to January.

Boardmembers Michelle Robertson and Alicia Jacobson cast nay votes in the decision, citing concerns about public perception and arguing for postponing the appointment until new boardmembers have been seated. Because incumbents Terry Hickey Banks and Jacobson didn’t seek reelection, two-fifths of the governing body will be brand new as of mid-December. Preliminary results indicate that Rogelio Delgado and Maureen Claffey won the school board election that wrapped up as the board made its decisions Tuesday night.

During public comment, school board candidate Gary Blair requested that the board delay its decision. It appears to some people that the current board is handpicking the next superintendent, Blair said. “It hurts public trust and confidence,” he concluded.

“There’s no conspiracy here,” said Sarvis. “I’m not trying to get the board to pre-designate a candidate for the superintendent position.”

Sarvis, who had worked previously as the Santa Barbara Schools Superintendent, was hired by CUSD in August when Micheline Miglis was released after just one year of her three-year contract as CUSD superintendent. “We were in a bit of a crisis at the beginning of the year,” said School Board President Andy Sheaffer in defense of Persoon’s appointment. “(Persoon) and Gerardo (Cornejo, Carpinteria High School principal) are the ones who stepped up.”

Sheaffer and Terry Hickey Banks both argued that Persoon understands the big picture of the district and has already been working in a leadership capacity

without any additional pay. The appointment, they said, with the support of boardmember Jaclyn Fabre, will keep district operations moving forward and will allow for Sarvis to work just a few days a week to extend his hours into January.

Persoon will receive a stipend of $150 for each day she serves in the new role of Administrator in Charge. Her appointment is expected to continue through March, but may be necessary through the end of June.

It’s been a tumultuous year for CUSD. In addition to Miglis’ abrupt removal by the board, Aliso School Principal Holly Minear and Carpinteria Middle School Principal John Merritt resigned and Assistant Superintendent Cindy Abbott retired. Bitter contract negotiations between the teachers union and the district dragged out for nearly a year, and the election among three candidates for two board seats proved to be the most attention-grabbing local race.

Persoon, who has a long tenure as a teacher then principal in the district, has worked closely with Sarvis this school year. Early in 2017, the district will face a handful of major decisions, and Sarvis said the best scenario would be to have Persoon as top administrator when he steps away. Prior to opening kindergarten enrollment, the board aims to make a decision on whether the extended transitional kindergarten program should continue. Also, a Dual Language Immersion program considered and postponed last year, must be reconsidered soon if implementation is to begin in 2017.

In a separate action, the board unanimously approved a $10,000 contract for the Santa Barbara County Education Office to help the district conduct its superintendent search. Sheaffer said that though the existing board decided to contract with SBCEO, the hiring process would be overseen by the new board and would include stakeholders from the teachers union and community.

Canalino School’s teacher in charge will assume some of Persoon’s principal responsibilities when she acts as Administrator in Charge. Robertson and Jacobson also voted against the shift of some principal duties on a half-day basis at a rate of $75 per day.

Third annual Carpinteria Volksmarch

A quartet of local craft beverage makers are teaming up for the third annual Carpinteria Volksmarch in support of community efforts to raise funds to build a skate park in town. Embracing the German tradition of the Volksmarch, or people walk, the event will follow a 2.3-mile walking route, beginning at Island Brewing Company and proceeding to Rincon Brewery, before heading to BrewLab and The Apiary Ciderworks on the west end of the city. The Volksmarch kicks off on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. at Island Brewing Company, 5049 6th Street. Wasn’t me

On Oct. 25 at approximately 12:40 p.m. a deputy was dispatched to 7th Street to investigate a possible burglary. A woman had seen a man she did not know standing in her neighbor’s yard, talking on a cell phone. She thought he was acting suspiciously and overheard the man say that he did not have a key and would have to climb through the window. She then saw the man climb through a window and enter her neighbor’s apartment. The man left the apartment through the front door and began walking away, eastbound toward Linden Avenue.

The woman followed the man a short distance and observed him turning northbound on Linden Avenue. She then called her neighbor who told her that no one should be in his apartment. The neighbor came home but didn’t find anything missing, and said he did not recognize the man who entered his apartment based on the description his neighbor provided.

The woman who called the Sheriffs described the person who entered the apartment as a white male adult in his 20s, with a short “buzz type” haircut, a thin build, khaki pants, a black sweater and black backpack. Deputies checked the area but did not find the man. The following day, however, a deputy stopped a man at El Carro Park who matched the description the woman had given. The man lives one house over from the apartment that had been entered illegally, but he said he had been in Ventura at the time of the incident.

On Oct. 25 at approximately 6 a.m., deputies responded to multiple reports of car tires having been slashed in the area around Dahlia Court. Eighteen victims reported slashed tires on their vehicles that had been parked overnight on the street near their residences. Deputies report more than $10,000 of damage was done. Based on victims’ statements, the vandalism seems to have occurred between 2 and 5 a.m., but deputies have no other leads.

On Oct. 30 at approximately 1:20 a.m. employees at a gas station/convenience store on Casitas Pass Road called Sheriff’s deputies to report a possible DUI after a woman hit the steel posts that protect the gas pumps before driving away. En route, deputies observed the vehicle that had been reported and began a pursuit.

Deputies noted that the driver was unable to maintain lane position, veering into the bike lane on Carpinteria Avenue, then making a “wide left turn” on Bailard Avenue. Deputies then turned on their emergency lights, and the woman pulled over on the shoulder of the southbound Highway 101 on-ramp.

The reporting deputy stated that the woman driving the vehicle had “droopy and bloodshot” eyes, and that her “speech was slow and slurred.” When asked where she was coming from, the woman admitted to hitting one of the posts at the gas station, then explained that her caretaker had run out of gas in La Conchita, so she had taken her son’s car to fill up a gas can to bring back to the caretaker. An overturned gas can behind the driver’s seat appeared to be leaking, and the woman was instructed to turn the gas can upright. As she did, more gas leaked out. Because of the fumes, deputies asked the woman to “voluntarily” step out of the vehicle, and upon speaking with her

On Oct. 30 at approximately 11:45 p.m. deputies were dispatched to the area of Bailard Avenue on a report of a suspicious vehicle moving from spot-to-spot around the neighborhood multiple times within the hour. The caller last saw the vehicle near a park at approximately 11:40 p.m.

A deputy found a vehicle that matched the caller’s description, with a man sitting inside who “was leaning back into his seat trying to hide himself,” according to the deputy’s report. The deputy parked his vehicle next to the man’s car and shined the spotlight on the driver’s side window. The man rolled down his window and said he was waiting for a friend. On Nov. 2 at approximately 1:50 p.m. deputies were dispatched to a market on Carpinteria Avenue where 150 California Lotto tickets had been stolen. The clerk had reviewed the in-store surveillance video and observed a white male adult taking the tickets. Video footage shows a man entering the store at approximately 1:18 p.m., looking around, then leaving.

At approximately 1:23 p.m. the man is again seen entering the store and going to the cashier’sTRAVELTEN90.COM counter. The clerk was not looking at the man at that time, and the man can be seen grabbing the book of lotto tickets and placing them in his jacket. The clerk said that the man left in a grey Jeep SUV, but he did not get the

The woman consented to a blood test at Santa Barbara County Jail, and the sample was placed in an evidence envelope and left in the “DOJ drop box” at the jail. At the woman’s request, deputies had moved her vehicle from the onramp and left it in the area legally parked.

Upon opening the wallet, the deputy observed a small piece of torn plastic in front of the man’s ID. “Based on my training and experience,” the deputy noted, “I suspected the plastic contained narcotics and I removed it from the card slot.”

The plastic contained a small amount of methamphetamine, and the deputy took the man into custody for possession of a controlled substance.

The man’s cell phone had buzzed with several incoming messages in the time the deputy had been arresting him, and the deputy asked if he could review these. Artist Jennifer Love grew up in Carpinteria, “More down at the tidepools than in class!” she admits with a laugh. Now living in Ventura, though an active Carpinteria Arts Center member, Love has created a duo of coloring books that focus on two adventurous avocados named Ace and Abi, who meet, naturally, at the beach. The rhyming tale has an environmental message, which parallels the volunteer work that Love has done with marine mammal and bird rescue organizations. In one of her stories, Ace the avo-hero paddles his surfboard out to rescue a dolphin ensnared by a plastic bag. TURN UP THE HEAT NIKKI DAILEY Once upon a November, a frozen Thanksgiving turkey exploded from a home deep fryer and blew a hole through the roof. Now this wasn’t my deep-fried turkey and this wasn’t my roof, but it happened. Every year it inevitably happens.

Unfortunately, if you drop a frozen bird into a vat of 500 degree oil incorrectly, you get yourself a turkey bomb. When a frozen turkey encounters boiling oil, it immediately produces a considerable amount of steam. The steam, or water, expands to almost 1500 times the water’s original volume. This steam displaces the molten hot cooking oil, which causes the oil to overflow and spill into the lit flame below. Kaboom!

To put it into holiday perspective, imagine your excited family all standing around outside on the deck to watch the turkey go into the frying pot. Cameras in hand and smiles on everyone’s faces, Uncle Louie slowly lowers the 20-pound bird into the oil over a flame lit on high.

The oil immediately boils over the pot rim and lightly kisses the beautifully refinished wooden deck. Which then ignites and touches an overhanging tree limb, which ignites and then touches a second tree eventually starting a small forest fire and burning the house as well. Suddenly your new Thanksgiving dinner guests are the local fire department and you’re headed to Denny’s.

So, if you’re still planning a fried turkey extravaganza, here’s how you do it the right way.

Step 1: Thaw turkey completely before frying. 100 percent thaw, 100 percent! For every 5 pounds of turkey, plan on defrost-

ing 24 hours. A 20-pound turkey will need four days minimum to defrost.

don’t use your hands directly and wear protective gear.

Step 2: Underfill the fryer pot with oil, remember that your 20-pound turkey will cause displacement in your oil even when fully thawed.

Step 5: Plan on frying your turkey outside (not on a wooden deck) and away from your house or anything else that may ignite.

Step 3: Do not heat oil above 400 degrees.

If you follow the steps above you are on the right track to having a delicious deep fried turkey with your family and celebrate the right way, sans explosion.

Step 4: Turn fryer flame off before lowering your turkey into the pot. Use a turkey fryer mechanism to lower it into the pot,

Deep fried turkey Ingredients

6 quarts hot water 1 pound kosher salt 1 pound dark brown sugar 5 pounds ice 1 (13- to 14-pound) turkey, with giblets removed Approximately 4 to 4 1/2-gallon peanut oil (may use vegetable oil or canola)

Process

Pour the hot water, kosher salt and brown sugar into a 5-gallon upright drink cooler and stir until the salt and sugar dissolve completely. Add the ice and stir until the mixture is cool. Gently lower the defrosted turkey into the container. If necessary, weigh down the bird to ensure that it is fully immersed in the brine.

Cover and set in a cool dry place for 8- to 16-hours.

Remove the turkey from the brine, rinse and pat dry. Allow to sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes prior to cooking.

Place the oil into a 28- to 30-quart pot and set over high heat on an outside propane burner with a sturdy structure. Bring the temperature of the oil to 250 degrees.

Once the temperature has reached 250, turn the flame off and slowly lower the bird into the oil.

When the turkey is in the oil, relight the flame and bring the temperature to 350 degrees F. Once it has reached 350, lower the heat in order to maintain 350 degrees.

After 35 minutes, check the temperature of the turkey using a probe thermometer.

Once the breast reaches 151 degrees, gently remove from the oil and allow to rest for a minimum of 30 minutes prior to carving. The bird will reach an internal temperature of 161 degrees due to carryover cooking. Serve, enjoy!

The cook time is 9 hours, 45 minutes. Recipe serves six.

Victory over Malibu lands Warriors in playoffs

The Carpinteria High School football team won for the second week in a row with a 32-13 victory at Malibu High School on Nov. 4. The win earned the Warriors an at large bid into the CIF Southern Section XII Playoffs where they will travel to play St. Genevieve of Panorama City on Friday, Nov. 11 in a first round matchup.

The Warriors jumped out to a 25-0 lead over the Sharks en route to their second Frontier League win, finishing second in their inaugural season in the league at 2-1 and 4-6 overall. Jacob Garside opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run to put the Warriors up 6-0 in the first quarter. The Warriors would quickly find the end zone again on quarterback Vance Keiser’s 5-yard run to take a 12-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Competing in its first football contest against Malibu, Carpinteria would add two more scores in the second quarter, an 8-yard run by Mike Garibay and an 8-yard touchdown pass from Keiser to Garside to open up the game at 25-0.

“Our guys played well from the get go, took the opening kickoff, went down and had a nice drive for a score,” said Warrior coach Ben Hallock, whose team has won three of the last four games, averaging over 36 points a game during that span. “Then we got a turnover, Tyler Bray made a nice break on the ball and intercepted, then we scored after that,” added Hallock.

The Sharks got on the board before the half ended to make the score 25-7 at the break. At the end of the third quarter, Garibay’s 2-yard run built the lead to 32-7 going into the final quarter. Garibay led all Carpinteria rushers with 107

November 2 – The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team took on Foothill Tech in the last Tri-Valley league game of the year, swimming away with a 13-4 win. it was also senior day with the possibility of it being the last time seniors Josh Kitt, Forrest Van Stein, Sal Briceno, Malek Mehai and Eric Thornburgh would play together at the community pool. With all five seniors playing the entire match, Van Stein netted seven goals and picked up three steals. Mehai won three of three sprints, collecting seven steals and two goals along the way. Wyatt Stevenson had one goal, and Thornburgh had a goal and three steals, while shutting down Foothill’s two-meter player. Briceno had two goals, and goalie Mac Clayton had nine blocks and three steals.

November 1 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team ended the season with a first round playoff loss to Faith Baptist, three games to one with scores of 2025, 20-23, 27-25 and 21-25. “Faith Baptist had excellent defense and their consistency allowed them to win the game,” said warrior coach Dino garcia. “The match was very close, it could have gone either was.” Garcia was named Frontier League Coach of the Year. Carpinteria finished the season second in league with a record of 10-2 and 14-12 overall. “I’m really proud of my team this year and I am happy with their high level of play,” said Garcia.

Isabela Montes de Oca wins Phil Womble Award

Cate School studentathlete Isabela Montes de Oca was honored on Nov. 7 with the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Phil womble Award. The award honors local high school student-athletes who also demonstrate the highest standards of ethics and sportsmanship. it’s named after the UCSB intercollegiate Athletic Hall of Famer who despite having cerebral palsy has lived his life to the fullest as a local author and UCSB sports historian.

November 3 - The Carpinteria High School cross country team competed last week in the Tri-County Athletic Association League Finals with the girls finishing in seventh place and the boys in eighth. Mikela Keefer finished in sixth place with a time of 19:41, qualifying her to compete in the CiF Cross Country Prelims to be held in Riverside on Nov. 11. Other top female finishers for the Warriors were Alondra Compuzano in 33rd place in 23:00 and Emmelly Santillan taking 49th place in 24:45.

The boys top runners were Caleb Classen in 23rd place in 18:26, Sam Truax in 26th place in 18:38 and Bernardo Cardona in 28th place with a time of 18:40.

November 3 - The Cate School cross country teams closed out their regular seasons at the Tri-Valley league (TVl) Finals at the lake Casitas course in Ojai with the girls side finishing eighth, and the boys finishing sixth for a CIF playoff spot for the second season in a row. The girls were led by sophomore Zoe Hale, who finished 14th with a time of 20:47, capturing second team allleague honors. Junior Isabela Montes de Oca made honorable mention, finishing two places behind Hale in 21:11. Junior Kyril Van Schendel was second overall in 16:05, earning first team all-league honors. Junior Ian MacFarlane ran a time of 18:58, and sophomore Joshua Shields finished in 19:03, placing 31 and 32, both being named as honorable mentions in the TVl. Senior Henry Walsh finished 38th in 19:13, followed by Bill Swing fellow senior Francesco DuffyCate junior Kyril Van Schendel runs toward rd Boscagli in 53 , in 20:08.

Heartbreak loss ends Cate season

The Cate football season came to an abrupt end late last Friday afternoon.

After spotting visiting Rolling Hills Prep a 15-point lead at the half, the Rams came charging back to overtake the Huskies for a 53-52 lead in the fourth quarter. But with seven seconds left, RHP quarterback Ethan Gretzinger found wide receiver Sangmin Whang for a 33-yard scoring play to capture a 60-53 victory in the first round of the eight-man CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.

Cate, who faced a rugged schedule this season including an opener against 2014 CIF Champion Mojave and Trinity Christian of Monterey, finishes the season at 4-5 and 2-2 in the ultra-competitive Condor League.

Shaking off a 54-34 loss to rival Thacher the week before, the Rams came out strong on Nov. 4. Ryder Dinning’s 2-yard plunge put the home team on top, 7-0 with 6:49 to play in the opening quarter. However, the Huskies would respond like they would all afternoon. Gretzinger hooked up with another one of his receivers, Reid Fong, for a 26-yard touchdown to make it, 7-6.

At the beginning of the second quarter, Cate quarterback Jack Deardorff hit Will Bowlin for a 25-yard score and a 14-6 lead.

But Gretzinger would again connect with Fong, this time on a 59-yard bomb to even the score at 14.

On the next offensive series for the Rams, Drew Anastasio broke through the RHP line and ran 70 yards for another score to put Cate back up 21-14 with 10:04 still left in the half. Gretzinger would throw two more touchdowns, both to Fong, and run for another to give the Huskies a 36-21 lead at halftime. “He (Gretzinger) threw the ball, third-andlong, fourth-and-long, where it had to be,” said Rams coach Ben Soto of the strong-armed sophomore who ended up with 460 passing yards and seven touchdowns for the game. His favorite target, Fong, ended up with nine receptions for 342 yards and five touchdowns in the high scoring affair.

However, Cate’s defense clamped down on RHP in the second half. After forcing a punt, the Rams methodically worked their way downfield, culminating the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run

Gretzinger and company came away with another score in the third when the quarterback, with Cate defenders hanging onto him, flicked the ball to his fullback Sam Wilson for a 5-yard score and a 42-34 lead. The Rams bounced back on Anastasio’s 41-yard touchdown to make it 42-40 going into the final quarter.

by Lundt that put the score at 46-42. But the deadly combination of Gretzinger-toFong would strike again, this time on 47yard pass play to make it 50-46. The Rams were not through yet, though, as Lundt would run off tackle for a 30-yard score to retake the lead, 53-50 with 3:05 left.

Attempting to preserve the lead with 29 seconds to play, Cate ended up taking a safety from their own 12-yard line to make room for their punter on fourth down, putting the score at 53-52 with 18 seconds left. The kick ended up on the Ram 33, whereupon Gretzinger spotted Whang for the game winner, a painful conclusion to the Rams season.

Cate rides CIF victories into quarterfinal

A long string of wins for Cate School’s tennis team came to a screeching halt this week when the girls fell 7-11 to Riverside Poly. The match-up pitted Cate, a school of 280, against a school of 2,800, and the size-difference showed in team depth.

“We finally ran up against a team with no weak points,” said coach Trevor Thorpe.

“Throughout the year, we’ve always been able to shift our lineup around and use our versatility to overcome strong opponents, but this team was just too deep. They’re the three-time consecutive CIF D4 Runner-Up team, so they also have a wealth of experience.”

The Rams had squeaked out a 69-68 victory on games against Desert Valley League Champions Xavier Prep on Nov. 4 to qualify for the quarterfinals.

In the first round of play against Riverside Poly, a few matches were close, but ultimately all six sets went to Cate’s opponent. Round two looked up for the Rams.

Clutch wins came from freshman Grace Fuss over senior Dani Baum, 6-4, and junior Jackie Cai against junior Jalyn Kornblum, 6-2. Summer Christensen and Sarah Polowczak tried to regroup after suffering their first loss in team play in the first round, but after coming back from 3-5 down in the second set, ended with a tie-break defeat.

Despite being the third-round underdogs, Cate rebounded to win five of its last six sets. “We played our hearts out every single match of the year, so it was nice to go down fighting in our last match of the season,” said Thorpe.

CHS alum qualifies for Ironman 70.3 World Championship

John Romais, a 1999 Carpinteria High School graduate and member of the Warrior Cross Country Team, recently competed in a 70.3 Ironman Triathlon in Tempe, Ariz. and qualified for the 2017 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga, Tenn., next September. A 70.3 Ironman consists of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1-mile run. Romais crossed the finish line in the Arizona race in 4:46:47. After high school, Romais pursued running at Santa Barbara City College and then took up swimming and biking when he joined the Triathlon Team at the University of California, San Diego. John and his family, wife Molly and baby daughter Makena, as well as John and Molly’s parents, Theresa and Jay Romais and Laurie and Bruce Rosser, will be travelling to Chattanooga next September to watch him compete.

school notes Aliso students vote on literature

While Carpinteria grown-ups were traipsing to polling places throughout town to take part in the Nov. 8 General Election, Aliso School students were also polishing their voting skills.

Students at the local elementary school cast their ballots for the California Young Reader Medal Award, selecting their favorite book among the five nominees.

The picture books are nominated annually by California teachers and students and staff read or listen to all five before voting.

Decisions will be announced for class winner, school winner, city winner, and eventually, the state winner. Typically voting takes place in January, but this year Librarian Julie Soto scheduled the election for Nov. 8 and turned the patio outside her library into a polling place.

Each student earned an “I voted today” sticker upon casting a ballot.

Holiday Trolley returns

The holiday Lights Trolley, a beloved local event, returns on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 3. Trolleys will depart from Canalino School starting at 5 p.m., and the tours of Carpinteria’s best holiday lights displays last 30 minutes. Individual tickets are $12 each for adults and kids. Babies 2 and under are free. Public ticket sales will take place on Monday, Nov. 14; Wednesday, Nov. 16; and Friday, Nov. 18 from noon to 1 p.m. in front of the Canalino School office, 1480 Linden Ave. To find out more, email nikkiy@verizon.net or call 689-2276.

Family School teacher honored among county educators

In her second year as Carpinteria Family School’s kindergarten/firstgrade teacher, Amy Porter received a clear signal that she had chosen the right profession. The young teacher was honored with the Distinguished New Educator award at the fourth annual A Salute to Teachers on Nov. 5. The event, hosted by Cox Communications and the Santa Barbara County Education Office, honored two other new teachers and three mentor teachers from schools throughout the county.

“This award has been one of the most humbling, wonderful experiences,” stated Porter. “As a teacher I happily pour a lot of time, energy and dedication into my students. It was truly an honor to be recognized and something that I will never forget.”

Downtown Summerland was filled with a lively parade of Summerland School students dressed as their favorite book characters on halloween morning. Now a longstanding tradition, the students visit downtown businesses where merchants wish them a happy halloween and offer special treats. Parent organization Co-President ursula Almeida said, “It was so touching to see how the community embraces our little school.” The students returned to their campus to share oral book reports about their favorite literary characters and celebrate with a festive fall carnival.

The couple had an overnight stay in the medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber (where their photo was taken) on the Romantic Road. They traveled north by car and rail to the wonderful city of Lubeck, where they visited the Buddenbrookhaus of Thomas Mann and cruised the Trave River and city canals.

Fall on the Central Coast is one of my favorite times of year. The weather is usually my version of perfect, the sunrises are stunning, and apples come into season. For me, tart, crisp apples taste of childhood, reminding me of running through orchards with leaves crunching underfoot and the promise of warm apple cider donuts. While my Vermont childhood was probably a lot different than that of anyone who grew up here, apples and fall still go hand in hand. What does that have to do with living the green life?

Quite a bit.

Eating food that is in season is great for you and the environment, because if you are eating something local (by definition, came from less than 400 miles away) the overall footprint of that food is lower than that of something that was shipped thousands of miles. Your produce is allowed to ripen in the field, on the vine or tree or stalk, which gives it a richer flavor. It reduces the waste stream, since many of the local operations are organic or don’t use pesticides, which benefits the soil and waterways.

And we live in one of the richest agricultural areas in the United States. Yearround farmers markets are a luxury, and one many of us take for granted. Climate change and drought may be changing our perception of readily available local produce. Recently I’ve heard reports about large scale farming operations just south of Carpinteria stopping production of things like raspberries and celery, which means the loss of hundreds of seasonal jobs. Food, like all things in a consumer society, follows the laws of supply and demand. If less produce is available lo-

cally, the price is driven up, which can make it too expensive for some to buy local organic foods. Produce that is shipped long distances has multiple impacts on the environment, which I have written about before (November 2013 “Living the Green Life”).

Impacts aren’t limited to carbon emissions from vehicle miles traveled. Generally, there is more waste associated with moving food long distances; some goes bad before it arrives, some gets crushed or falls off the shipping container, and some is tossed because it doesn’t look perfect enough for the grocery store shelves. And much of it is landfilled even after all of that because it passed a sell by date. A lot of water is used throughout this entire process, first at the farm, and then at a packing plant, then again at the store where the produce ends up. Packaging creates another type of waste: plastic, which has myriad impacts.

If you do shop locally, many of the above mentioned impacts are limited in various ways. At least one of the local grocery stores participates in a commercial organics program that sends food waste to a commercial composting facility, where it is turned into nutrient rich soil. Many California farms have seen the benefits of mulching and composting on site, which can help save money and conserve water. Organic farming has become more popular, which can have multiple benefits both environmentally and economically for farmers. While we are still in a drought cycle, the future of farming in our region could be uncertain. But the benefits of buying local and seasonal produce still outweigh large scale shipping of food from one place to another.
