Lured out by a negative tide

Big surf booms through Jelly Bowl on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 13 during the Carpinteria State Beach tide pool walk led by Park Interpretive Specialist Leanne Roth. With a negative tide exposing the rock reef, tide poolers had a rare opportunity not only to explore the inter-tidal zone, but also to bask in the warm November sunshine and glassy ocean conditions. About 20 people set out from the State Beach at 12:30 p.m. as a group, but as the afternoon wore on, more and more beach goers followed the falling tide farther out, keeping a wary eye on the surf while searching for natural wonders among the crags and fissures of the reef.

Sarah Ringler A head-turning arrest of three burglary suspects took place at the 76 gas station on Carpinteria Avenue on Nov. 9 at 1:30 p.m.

One minute after dispatch announced a “be on the lookout” for a red Ford Fiesta connected with a residential burglary that had just occurred in the 1300 block of Linhere Street in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies located the car driving southbound on Carpinteria Avenue between Cactus Lane and Maple Avenue. Ventura residents Sarah Ringler, 27; Shannon Salas, 43, and Joseph Grizzaffi, 37, were located in the vehicle and arrested. Sheriff’s deputies searched the vehicle and located stolen property from the burglary, burglary tools, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

All three suspects were arrested and booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of residential burglary, possession of burglary tools, conspiracy, possession of a controlled substance and possession of narcotic paraphernalia.

Ringler is being held on $50,000 bail, and Grizzaffi is being held without bail due to an outstanding warrant. Salas posted $50,000 bail the next day and was released from custody.

Surfers haul a drowned man to the shore at Rincon. He was resuscitated and breathing again when transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Drowning surfer rescued at Rincon

Witnesses reported that a 33-year-old man hit his head on his surfboard at Rincon Point just after noon on Nov. 9, and was submerged underwater for up to four minutes before being pulled to the sand. Ventura County Fire and CarpinteriaSummerland Fire District arrived on the scene to treat the man and transport him off the beach. According to CSFD, the patient was breathing when he was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Several local surfers who were on hand reported that they didn’t recognize the man.

Bluffs fundraiser encourages preservation as holiday gifts

Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs is selling symbolic portions of the 21-acre Bluffs III property as a means of raising funds to complete the purchase of the new preserve.

The “Save the Rest of the Bluffs” campaign offers preservation deeds to anyone who donates at various levels between $107 and $21,500. A total campaign goal of $7.9 million will allow for the purchase, initial restoration and ongoing stewardship of the property. Faith Lutheran holds fish fry

For more than 30 years, Faith Lutheran Church has held fish fries to raise funds for charity, sometimes giving to specific people in need and sometimes supporting a worthy organization in good works for the community. This year’s fish fry is an outreach event, with the aim of maintaining the church’s ability to pursue its work. Serving deep-fried wild red snapper from Alaska at $9.50 a plate, Faith Lutheran Church continues the tradition on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. at 1335 Vallecito Place. “We do this the week before Thanksgiving because households are getting really busy and the gals need a night out,” explained church member John F. Welty. With between 100 and 150 people usually showing up, Welty said, “We’ve never run out. I always say a prayer—it’s not my fish fry, it’s the Lord’s.”

A fond farewell

To the community of Carpinteria and my colleagues at CUSD, I wish to bid you a fond farewell. Throughout my 8-plus years managing the CUSD transportation department, I have come to know and love many children and families of our district and have made what I hope will be lifelong friends of my staff and fellow coworkers and administrators.

It has been my pleasure to serve this wonderful seaside community and to see some students get to high school and some graduate. I will miss seeing their smiling faces as they get on the bus with a sleepy “good morning” so early. I will miss seeing the awards they show us that they get for reading, math and citizenship. And the gap when they lose a tooth and they get that cute little tooth-shaped box to take it home in! Someone asked if I was going on to greener pastures. I would have to say no, just a bigger one.

And a bigger pasture usually means more manure (if it’s okay for me to say that)!

I had a wonderful staff, Rick, Jack and Jose, who supported me and helped to make my job easier. I could not have asked for more wonderful people to have alongside me. I also enjoyed the friendship and support of Cindy Abbott, Darlene, Beverly and Maureen. Carpinteria and this school district will always hold a special place in my heart.

The 2016 election was about average Americans versus the political class. For more than two years, Americans have been in revolt against the arrogant political class and the financial elites. It was a peaceful revolt, an uprising. Americans saw their country in decline and the failure and corruption of their leaders.

Why the Electoral College? Vermont has a population of 626,560 and the state has 3 electoral votes—1 electoral vote for every 208,853 persons. California has a population of 38,800,000 with 55 electoral

votes—1 electoral vote for every 705,454 persons. Why does one vote in Vermont count four times more than a vote in California? How is this democracy?

What just happened?

On Nov. 8, 50 million working class Americans of all backgrounds and colors voted, even though the media told them not to bother. They took their stand even though they were mocked, taunted and ridiculed. They held up their hands and stood in front of the great machine that was grinding them down, and it stopped. The impossible states fell one by one. Ohio. Wisconsin. Pennsylvania.

Iowa. They fought back against their jobs being shipped overseas and against regulations that were crushing them. They fought back against being told what to say and how to say it. And they fought back against being held in contempt because they wanted to work with their hands and take care of their families.

These ordinary men and women chipped away at the machine, one vote at a time. They watched it halt and they marveled at how weak and fragile it actually was. And they were amazed at how strong they were together. Who are these people? They are the working class. They didn’t talk right or think right. They had the wrong ideas, the wrong clothes and the ridiculous idea that they still mattered.

They didn’t realize the future belonged to the urban elite and his dot com, not the guy who had a good job before it was sent to China or Mexico. They are the lost Democrats searching for someone to represent them in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

They are union members who nodded along when their leaders told them how to vote, but who refused to acquiesce.

Fifty million Americans ignored the celebrities, the pundits, the polsters and the media. They were told they couldn’t change anything and they ended up changing everything! No one will ever interview them. We will never know their names. Who are these people? They are the ones who did the impossible.

Trump deserves a chance

It’s over. I voted for Donald Trump. I’m not writing to gloat. I have intelligent and caring liberal friends who voted for Hillary Clinton. I respect their choice. Some disagree with my sincere belief that Barack Obama has been a feckless president of our great country. I never voted for him. I genuinely believed that his far-left liberal views would be harmful to the nation’s welfare. His election was a historical event. He had the opportunity to successfully promote the advantages of the diversity that exists in our society and nowhere else in the world. In my opinion, he failed miserably.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton carried heavy negatives and character flaws. I believe Hillary doomed herself by promising to carry on what she considered to be the successes of the Obama administration. Additionally, putting the nation’s security at risk with her emails represents either a display of total stupidity or an “I couldn’t care less” attitude.

Doris Arlene Soyster 2/1/1927 – 11/4/2016

Doris Arlene Soyster, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 4, 2016. Her daughter, Cathy, and her friend, Jamaica, were at her side. Arlene was born Feb. 1, 1927 in Hollywood, Calif. to Herman and Gladys Chavers. Arlene had an interesting childhood growing up during the golden years of Hollywood.

She and her friends enjoyed searching for movie stars (often finding them) as well as peeking at them from afar as the stars attended glamorous premieres at beautiful theaters. Arlene loved singing and playing the piano and violin, going to the beach and riding the old red streetcars.

She married her first husband, Howard Dahlquist, in 1946. The couple eventually moved to the then-beautiful San Fernando Valley and raised two children. During those years Arlene slowly but surely put herself through college and graduated in the late 1970s. She and Howard divorced in 1978 and Arlene married her second husband, Gene Soyster, soon after. Gene and Arlene spent many happy years in the the Bay Area. Arlene ran a thriving

piano studio with much help from her assistant, Gene (retired college professor).

Arlene loved teaching, giving recitals and helping her students prepare for various competitions. She was a proud member of the Music Teacher’s Association of California.

Arlene moved to Carpinteria in 2011 after the death of her beloved Gene. Arlene was a friendly, sociable person who loved people. Her declining health after moving to Carpinteria made it difficult to attend family affairs and other activities.

She greatly appreciated having gatherings at her apartment and many visits from family and friends. She was much loved and will be missed by many.

She is survived by her daughter, Cathryn Dahlquist; son, David Dahlquist (Tina); grandson Christian Dahlquist and his daughter, Alea; grandson Jesper Dahlquist (Cyndi) and their sons, Jayce and Jaxxon; her sister and favorite brother-in-law Jan and Michael Zimmerman, as well as her amazing caregiver and best friend, Jamaica Jones.

Services will be held on Friday, Nov. 18 at 1:30 p.m. at the Carpinteria Community Church, 1111 Vallecito Road.

I wish to express a sincere thank you to everyone who voted and supported me in my quest for a Carpinteria City Council seat. It was an extraordinary opportunity & honor to participate in our country’s election system.

I may have lost, but it pales to what was lost in the national election. Our country may be heading in a diverse direction, but our community will remain in good hands. My opponents Fred Shaw and Wade Nomura are good men and have represented us well in the past and I am sure they will continue to do so. I wish them and the others on the city council all the best and trust in them to do what is right for our community.

She failed to carry rust belt states and other swing states where working class voters said “enough” and expressed dissatisfaction with both Democrat and Republican politicians. I was impressed and encouraged with the response from middle-class Americans.

Trump defeated two powerful political establishments and a heavily-biased liberal media. I view this as a tremendous accomplishment. Obama had his turn. Americans are saying give Trump a chance. A tough road lies ahead, but he has some ideas that can make America

great again. And it’s time to bid the Clintons adieu.

How do we talk with our children about the election? cvn

This presidential campaign and election season has been ugly. Mean. Hateful.

It has revealed divides in our country that will not be easily or quickly repaired. Our children know it’s upsetting us adults, and we should talk with them about it honestly and appropriately. Parents should talk with their children in ways that clearly spell out your family values and keep the lines of communication and comfort open.

Children are talking on the play-

ground. My son found classmates in tears, afraid for family members who are not legally working in this country.

No matter your stance, these are real people, friends. Children in Carpinteria have come home from school asking their parents (legal citizens who speak Spanish) if they have to leave the country. One child asked if war would start. People have died in Seattle in what we expected to be peaceful demonstrations.

Emotions are contagious; fear is contagious. Children look to the adults closest to them for security. We may not be able to offer certainty—maybe we never really can, but we have to reassure our children.

The adults will manage the changes in the government. The protests, indeed the seat of the federal government, are very far away from us. What matters most is close, and Carpinteria is safe.

amazing young people, with so much energy, enthusiasm, and goodness. We will be in good hands for our future, as you emerge as our leaders.” Yes we will.

And each of us can do our part to nurture and intentionally educate our future leaders and voters.

We each, no matter our age or political persuasion, can work to uphold and promote American ideals in our daily lives.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” reads the Declaration of Independence. In a nutshell, that’s about being fair and tolerating differences. We strive in homes, schools and houses of worship to live those ideals. It’s heartbreaking and confusing that Americans’ conceptions of fairness and tolerance are so obviously in dispute. Self-reflection and difficult conversations are the most likely path to more clear understandings of our differences.

The condition of Carpinteria roadways fell from good to fair over the last eight years and will continue to drop unless significant funds are dedicated to their upkeep. At its Nov. 14 meeting, the Carpinteria City Council heard a report on the state of city streets, all 28 miles of them.

Over the last 21 years, the city has relied on Measure A (formerly Measure D) and the gas tax to fund road repairs, but those sources are flat. Public Works Director Charlie Ebeling told the council, “Construction costs have skyrocketed, they’ve gone up many fold, and at the same time our revenue, except for grants, has really stayed static or actually gone down.”

Over the last five years, the city has budgeted an average of $400,000 annually to roadwork, though that level of funding has required major subsidies from the general fund. This year’s pavement report found that in order to improve roads to a “good” rating, $1.5 million an-

One thing the EIR does is evaluate a range of alternatives, including a “no project” alternative. Yikes! Although enough money was allocated to fund the EIR, another $700,000 is needed to get the project underway. This would have to be approved by Governor Brown—he of the tight purse strings. We have to hope that the gov wants this project to move forward enough to release the funds.

Of course the “no” alternative route would have been inevitable from the beginning without the intervention and help of State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and then Assemblyman Das Williams–your elected representatives doing their best to represent and push for solutions in the public interest! Unfortunately, I don’t think we can look for a real fix before 2018.

Summerlanders have long been eying the fenced-in area at the east end of Looking Park ever since the ranger’s mobile home was moved out of that area. Now occupied by park hosts, the large space offers the best views in the park. Perfect for a group picnic area or events like reunions or weddings.

After a lot of pressure from the Summerland Citizens Association, quite a few meetings, email exchanges and help from Supervisor Carbajal’s office, County Parks is now moving toward making the area a public space. The plan is to move the camp host spot to the west end of the park, which is narrower and less used.

Parks recently made available an updated plan for improvement work at Lookout. Already finished are tree pruning and installation of some permeable pavers (Parks loves them because they allow rainwater to soak in). The department was hoping to finalize the “vacated TRAVELTEN90.COM host site plan” by the end of this month and had planned a meeting with residents on this issue on the 15th of this month.

I haven’t heard anything about it and wonder if it came off.

At a summer meeting with Parks, Suzy Cawthon, SCA spokesperson, was adamant that the new group area be completed and ready to use in time for the SCA’s annual potluck picnic in July.

Suzy is a hard person to say no to, and Paddy Langlands, then Deputy Parks Director, pretty much guaranteed that the site would be ready. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.

One good thing: As President Obama so gracefully reminded us, we are all Americans together.

Cleanup of oil-polluted Summerland beach has been a long, slow go. After much shouting and complaints about oil coating the sand and bathers’ bodies and creating slicks on the water and sludgy foam, the California State Lands Commission finally took up the issue.

State Lands determined, as most Summerlanders already knew, that the oil was due to the century-old abandoned oil Becker oil well on the beach below Lookout Park. A few months ago State Lands technicians dug out the improperly capped well head, placed temporary booms and marked the location of the leak—visible as a black pool of oil.

Verifying and marking was step one.

Next came getting an allocation in the state budget for a fix. Ordinarily, oil companies pay for their own clean-up, but since Summerland’s wild cat oil drillers were long gone, State Lands assumed responsibility. Which means we, the tax payers, must pay for careless mistakes of the past. The request made it through the budget process, which paid for the Lands commission to prepare a draft Environmental Impact Report.

In October the State Lands Commission held a Public Scoping Meeting for the draft EIR report in Carpinteria’s City Hall. I missed the meeting, but sent in a comment. The 12-page document included colored photographs, historic oil field maps, and a history of State Lands’ efforts beginning in the 1960s to combat persistent leak problems.

As outlined in the draft EIR, capping the single Becker well would involve installation of a jack-up barge (which resembles a smaller off-shore drilling platform) that would hover over the site, facilitating installation of a coffer dam and abandonment equipment. The barge and equipment would involve three-round trips from the shore base at Long Beach.

Quite a project, especially for viewers on shore. Each of the three trips made by the barge would require repositioning by tugboats during high tide. Then there’s the placement of an emergency oil response trailer in Lookout Park, plus approval by approximately 14 other agencies.

Council ups support for library, HELP

Carpinteria City Council boosted funding by $20,000 to the Carpinteria Library and HELP transportation service at its Nov. 14 meeting after staff provided an overall rosy city budget update. The move increased the library’s total 20162017 funding from the city to $50,500 and HELP’s to $10,000. Councilmembers spoke of both services being crucial to the community.

During its June adoption of the current budget, the council kept its contributions to the two organizations at the same level as the prior year, but asked to have the additional requests revisited during the fall budgetary review. When the budget was adopted, the contract with the Sheriff’s Department, a $3.5 million cost to the city, was possibly in flux due to ongoing labor negotiations within the department. Ultimately the contract amount remained as anticipated. Also, major revenue sources to the city’s general fund—sales tax, transient occupancy tax and property tax—are all on track to meet or exceed projections.

Friends of the Library Board President Gaby Edwards thanked the council for reconsidering its funding. Over the last decade, the gap has widened between

state and county funding for the branch library and its operating expenses. Both the City of Carpinteria and the Friends of the Library have increased their annual contributions to meet demands. This year the library faced a new $30,000 shortfall, which Friends offered to cover in a 50/50 split with the city.

Edwards outlined various ways that the nonprofit raises funds to support the library, including revenues from its used bookstore neighboring the library and a recent fundraising raffle. “I don’t want you to think we’re going to sit back on our heels because you’re giving more,” she said.

HELP requested additional funds this year due to a major donor reducing its contribution by $7,000. The local program provides donation-based rides mainly for elderly Carpinterians, but rider donations only amount to 25 percent of operating costs. HELP Board President Art Wilner told the council that he has been a driver for HELP for years. “Most of the people when they get in the car say, “We couldn’t get along without you,’” he said. “(HELP) goes a long way to help make Carp, Carp.”

Local jam maker Maureen Claffey recently received word that her Heirloom Tomato Spice Jam was chosen among competitors nationwide as a Good Food Awards finalist. Representing 14 categories and 38 states, all finalists rose to the top in a blind tasting of the 2,059 entries from nearly every state and passed a rigorous vetting to confirm they met specific Good Food Awards standards around environmentally sound agriculture practices, good animal husbandry, sourcing transparency and responsible relationships throughout the supply chain. Claffey owns Red Hen Cannery, a Carpinteria-based jam company that relies on locally sourced produce, much of which is grown on Claffey’s family farms.

Karate studio announces self-defense class

United Studios of Self Defense will hold a class in self-defense basics on Jan. 14 from 2 to 3 p.m. at 933 Linden Ave. This one-hour class will provide participants with some basic techniques that can be crucial if the need to defend oneself arises. a monthly muse melinda wittwer We’re driving to my second lumpectomy in less than two weeks. At least I know what to expect now. Again, no food or liquids after midnight. Again my husband drives me to outpatient surgery.

Again I fill out forms and assure at least 15 people of my name and birthday. I meet a new surgical nurse, consult with my surgeon and anesthesiologist, and sign several documents swearing I won’t sue but I will pay. Very efficiently I am prepped and wheeled off to the operating room where I drift to sleep in short order.

After this surgery it’s a little harder to wake up, a little harder to concentrate on directions and information. Thankfully my husband will fill me in later. My surgeon says everything went well, but that’s what he said last time so I’m not overly assured. I do know my surgeon is highly thought of by his colleagues so I still have confidence in him—I think. Anyway, I’m done for today and can go home and sleep off all this medication. Again, not much pain, just more worry and waiting to see if this time the margins are clear of DCIS (ductile carcinoma in situ) a beginning stage of breast cancer.

I keep myself busy and within a week, a very long week, my surgeon calls with the news that all is good. In fact, as he thought, he removed all the DCIS during the first surgery but now they know for sure that all the margins are clear. Next he wants me to meet with the radiology oncologist, the medical oncologist and perhaps the genetic counselor. Again I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. Wasn’t having the DCIS removed enough?

The radiology oncologist is a very sweet man who throws percentages out in the conversation so often they tend to lose their meaning. It is clear he prefers to follow my surgery with radiation, and it is clear this is not what I prefer. He explains there is a test that can be done on the tissue already removed to see if the DCIS cells are the type that are more likely to develop into invasive cancer or

the cells are more likely to remain just as calcifications. I agree this test would provide good information. Of course the results will take up to two weeks so again I am faced with more waiting, more worry, more obsessing, more avoiding.

A week later I meet with the medical oncologist. He reassures me that the only reason I am being faced with so many choices about my treatment is that I have such a low stage of cancer. He is recommending I try an estrogen-blocking drug.

If I tolerate the drug well with few side effects, it can lower the risks of the cancer returning as I get even older. But he also agrees that if the side effects make me miserable, I should stop taking the drug.

This sounds doable.

Days pass, and I’m trying not to speculate on the outcome of the test on my DCIS cells. While having coffee with friends, I get a call showing an unknown number. Luckily I answer. My radiologist cheerily informs me that my test came back the lowest he’s ever seen, so now both he and the surgeon are recommending no radiation. Sounds good to me. I stop holding my breath.

I still have to see my medical oncologist again regarding the estrogen-blocking drug, and I still have to do my yearly mammograms. Other than that, I’m free and clear of cancer—at this time.

My breast cancer journey only covered less than four months of my life in real time but seemed to last forever. I met more doctors, specialists, nurses and medical technicians during these weeks than I had in the previous five years of my life. I also heard numerous breast cancer stories as women shared their experiences with me and gave me support.

Breast cancer is a disease that is usually only one step from all of us as we have mothers, sisters, girlfriends, or cousins that have had their own cancer journey. I was lucky because my cancer was found early. It was found early because I go in for yearly check-ups and mammograms due to my family history. So give yourself or your wife or your mother a life-saving present and insist upon—no, better yet, drive her to—her mammogram.

Fifth-generation Carpinterian Michelle Durtche initially worked through tears when she began hiking the Franklin Trail earlier this year. Now she leaves her teenaged sons in the dust.

Editor’s note: When Franklin Trail first reopened a few years ago no one predicted the kind of transformative power it would have on Carpinterians. Between dawn and dusk, the trail is a superhighway of hikers, bikers and runners, many of whom tackle the task almost daily. This new column aims to bring some of those stories to light—honoring those who make the trek and inspiring new trail users. Columnist Debbie Murphy also hopes to inspire new participants in the Franklin Trail Turkey Trot and Tread Challenge. Challengers are attempting to hike or bike the trail 20 times and raise $100 or more by Dec. 9.

Funds raised will benefit the final phase of the trail, which leads into the backcountry and completes the three-phase project started years ago. Sign-up forms are available at the Carpinteria High School trailhead for Franklin Trail.

Michelle Durtche is a fifth generation Carpinterian with literally hundreds of Medel relatives living here in town.

Her husband Rob is a local firefighter, and they have three children ages 15, 17 and 22.

When did you first go up the trail? Why? Right before last Christmas I got on the scales and was horrified that I weighed 203 pounds. I’m only 5-foot 1-inch. I wasn’t just overweight, I was totally out of shape.

I had watched my friend Brenda hike the trail and lose a lot of weight, so I decided to do it myself. I realized there would be time to hike after getting my kids to school.

What was your experience the first time?

The first time was so hard that I cried.

I was so angry at my husband, too. Even

Why did you go back again?

It was the soreness that was so good. I felt alive and energetic for the first time in a long time. My kids were so proud of me that I had made it up the mountain.

They even started hiking with me from time to time, yet now they won’t because they say they can’t keep up with me.

What’s the farthest you have gone on the trail?

Twice I have hiked all the way to the start of the third phase, that’s 5.9 miles up the mountain. It is still hard. I’ve seen four snakes, a coyote and a fox. I’m really looking forward to getting all the way to the top when the final 2.9 miles are complete.

Has the trail changed you or your life?

Yes it has changed my life. I just feel so good about myself now. I’m confident.

I’ve lost 43 pounds. Using my Fitbit, I track my calories consumed and burned with a goal of burning 1000 calories more than I eat. I love shopping now. I’m happy that I’m a good role model for my children—now they see me eating well and getting stronger.

Has your hiking influenced others?

There are now a few of us hiking the trail together. We are participating in the second Annual Turkey Trot. Today we called it “Meditation Monday.” We hiked up the trail then relaxed. One of my friends made me cry when she said, “You motivated me.”

Anything else you would like to say?

I’m so thankful for the people responsible for the opening of the trail and the upkeep of the trail. Their work has truly changed my life.

Sometimes I climb to one of the benches by myself, sit for about 20 minutes and look down on Carpinteria. I think about my grandfather, my “Papa,” who farmed here and loved to hike the hills of Carpinteria. I know that what I’m seeing is what my Papa saw.

We are fortunate to be part of a supportive community that fosters a strong commitment to the schools and Carpinteria children. To protect and enhance the quality of life in our community and to insure the value of our homes and property we must continue to provide supplemental support for the educational and cultural enrichment opportunities for all students of the Carpinteria Unified School District. For the past 23 years Carpinteria Education Foundation has been doing just that. The Foundation continues to collaborate with the Carpinteria Unified School District, to fund many programs and initiatives that serve CUSD students from Kindergarten to grade 12.

Each fall The Carpinteria Education Foundation is honored to facilitate scholarships to the graduating seniors of Carpinteria High School. In 2016, the foundation facilitated over $56,500 worth of scholarships. Seattle University, Azuza Pacific University, UC Berkeley, UCSD, California Lutheran University, Westmont UC David, UCLA …and many, many more impressive educational institutions.This is just a sample of where our Carpinteria graduating seniors are studying this coming fall. This year we will be unveiling The Carpinteria Triple Crown for Education. Three of the best courses in Carpinteria, these races support the Carpinteria Unified School District students. A Unique challenge in Santa Barbara County, sign up for one, or all three races and support our students. To be a part of the series, simply register and finish each of the events in one year. Finishers of all three runs will receive a commemorative medal and honor of completing all three runs for the CUSD students. All three runs are Santa Barbara Athletic Association Grand Prix Races.

1) Carpinteria Winter Warm Up 5K Run/walk in honor of Richard Partida - February 19th, 2017. A trail run on the Carpinteria Bluffs, this event is the perfect training run for both the elite and beginning runner.

2) The 25th Annual Orchard 2 Ocean (O2O) 5k, 10K and 1 Mile Fun Run - March 18th, 2017. It is an event for both elite and casual runners. With over 200 runners each year, the event provides well-needed funds to the CUSD Parent Groups.

The Orchard 2 Ocean has become a favorite among Santa Barbara County and Ventura County runners, with its delicious after-race food and beautiful course. The coastal view course runs along the Carpinteria State Park Campground, along the Carpinteria Bluffs, returning through the beautiful Concha Loma Community. A fast course, usually providing many PRs for the competitive runner!

3) The Big Avocado 5K Run/Walk – October 8th, 2017 This annual race is always held around Carpinteria Avocado week and is a great opportunity to enjoy a unique cross-country/trail race along the beautiful Carpinteria Bluffs.

Carp-a-Cabana

Each year the Carpinteria Education Foundation hosts an annual fundraiser titled the Carp-a-Cabana. The highest grossing Carpinteria Unified School District fundraising event, Carp-a-Cabana generates essential financial support for the Carpinteria and Summerland public schools. Proceeds from the event are donated to CUSD Site Grants distributed amongst the schools. Allocations are made to principals based on the submission of funding proposals for technology and equipment, site based needs, and critical program enhancements.

Carpinteria Education Foundation Committee members work to keep costs to a minimum so that that each year the proceeds given to the schools increase. In the past 5 years, $206,539 has been provided to CUSD from Carp-a- Cabana proceeds.

Courage, strength and stamina were all basic requirements to complete this year’s Volksmarch—an event that challenged the heartiest souls, the most devout of craft beer drinkers to march among four local watering holes where microbrews, ciders and meads are made. Several marchers heeded the call of duty on Nov. 13 and made their way from Island Brewing Company to Rincon Brewery, Apiary and brewLAB. Medals were awarded to those who fulfilled the task.

Local librarian Jena Jenkins recently met with the Morning Rotary Club to talk about community needs and how the library can help facilitate community development. Jenkins recently was trained in the American Library Association’s Transforming Communities Initiative, which gave her the tools to reach out to her local community and ask, “What do you want for Carpinteria?” Jenkins goal is to be a conduit for community discussion, Jena Jenkins of the Carpinteria collecting information on what the pubLibrary, right, is given a Carpinteria lic wants and needs as far as community calendar by Morning Rotary services and facilities are concerned.

As part of her first round of outreach, Jenkins discussed numerous areas of public concern with the Morning Rotarians and collected ideas for future community goals. Among the many ideas suggested were more opportunities for higher education, citywide free Wi-Fi, increased facilities and services for homeless, greater transportation and support for local seniors, safe recreational activities and night life for local youth, and crossing guards for the intersections near the middle school. Jenkins plans to hold more forums like this and eventually bring various groups together to work on the ideas suggested.

Awana Club brightens lives internationally

The children in the Awana Club at Carpinteria Valley Baptist Church spent the last month collecting school supplies, toiletries, and toys and filling shoeboxes with the supplies to send to children around the world. The boxes will be collected and sent by Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian humanitarian aid organization.

Warrior playoff run halted

BY AL OROZCO AND PHOTOS BY BILL SWING The Carpinteria High School football team got off to a slow start this season but finished the regular season strong with a CIF playoff bid. Unfortunately, the season came to halt last Friday in a first-round, 42-7 defeat to formidable foe St. Genevieve. Playing at Crespi High School in Encino, the Warriors found themselves down by just 14-7 at the half, but the Valiants brought insurmountable power and speed into the second half.

St. Genevieve got on the board first, as Anthony Smets tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Imani Washington to put the Valiants up 7-0 in the opening quarter. With the score the same heading

into the second, Carpinteria mounted a drive of its own. Mike Garibay capped it off with a one-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7.

“Our plan going in was that we wanted to try to hang onto the football as long as we can, keep the football away from them; that’s the best way we could defend them,” explained Warrior coach Ben Hallock. But Carpinteria would end up giving the ball back to St. Genevieve, as Braxton Taylor’s 60-yard touchdown return off an interception put the Valiants back on top at the half, 14-7.

St. Genevieve established the ground game in the third quarter, running down-

hill at the Warriors. It resulted in a 16yard touchdown run by Darrious Gaines to expand the lead to 21-7. A fumble led to another Valiant score, and it suddenly became a 28-7 advantage. Gaines broke away for a 71-yard run, and St. Genevieve opened up a 35-7 lead in the final quarter. Smets adds a 41-yard run for a touchdown to wrap up the scoring.

Carpinteria quarterback Vance Keiser threw for 17 yards on the night, com-

pleting one of six. The sophomore led all Warrior runners with 68 yards on 17 carries, and Jacob Garside caught the lone reception for 17 yards.

“It was a good finish to our season,” said Hallock. “It was great to be able to make the playoffs, and having the experience of traveling and playing a good team.” The Warriors finish 4-7 on the year.

Warrior water polo playoff run squashed by La Canada

The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team hosted a second round CIF Southern Section playoff match against La Canada on Nov. 10. In front of a big, boisterous crowd at the Community Pool, the Warriors gave the second-ranked Division V Spartans all they could handle for three quarters. In the end, however, the visitors proved to be a bit too strong, outscoring Carpinteria three to one in the final quarter to advance with an 11-8 tournament win.

The Warriors’ Wyatt Stevenson opened the game with a goal just 16 seconds in, to put the home team up, 1-0. However, La Canada countered with a goal on the next possession when Luke Stefan found the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1. The match remained tied until a sweeping, backhand toss by the Spartans’ George Avakian made it a 2-1 game with under three minutes left in the first.

A smothering defense kept Carpinteria in check early on, as the Spartans would take a 3-1 lead on two-meter player Wyatt Lowe’s goal with 1:56 to play in the quarter. Stevenson converted a pass from Connor Van Wingerden for his second goal of the game to cut the lead to 3-2, but Alec Abrahamian’s goal closed out the quarter with La Canada leading 4-2.

Buoyed by some huge blocks from goalie Mac Clayton, the Warriors kept the game close in the second. Carpinteria coach Matt Organista complimented goalie Mac Clayton’s ability to ramp up play over the last several matches. “He just flipped the switch, and he was on,” said Organista.

Organista also got some outside help with his defensive alignment. “My friend lives in Pasadena, and he filmed the (La Canada) game on Tuesday (Nov. 8), so we watched the footage all last night and today … we knew who their top players were.” CHS was eliminated in the first round of last year’s playoffs.

The Warriors came out strong in the second quarter, cutting the lead to 4-3 on a Stevenson penalty shot. Stevenson would add his fourth goal of the game on a feed from Malek Mehai, and the score would be tied at 4-4 with 5:30 until halftime. In a physical contest, the Warriors continued to hold their own, and the score remained the same as the teams entered the third.

Another early goal to start the second period, this time by Jordan Perez, put the Warriors up 5-4. But the Spartans would counter with two, to take a 6-5 edge with 2:19 left. A blast from the middle by Forrest Van Stein and another goal from Perez put Carpinteria back in the lead at 7-6. However, La Canada blasted in two to take an 8-7 lead into the final stanza.

This time it would be the Spartans getting off to a quick start, as Stefan scored three goals to build the lead to 11-7. “They had a couple of mismatches, that was the problem,” explained Organista. Perez scored his third goal of the game, but time ran out on the season for the Warriors.

“The boys have been so good, I’m so proud of them,” concluded Organista of his team’s performance.

The Cate School cross country team competed in the CIF Southern Section Prelims in Riverside on Nov. 12, finishing sixth in their heat and qualifying for the finals Nov. 19. Carpinteria High School hadn’t qualified for prelims as a team, but individual runner Mikela Keefer did. She ran her heart out on Nov. 11 to beat her time last year by 38 seconds and come in 19th. The top 15 runners qualified for the finals. “She truly went after it at prelims and gave it her best shot to try and qualify for finals. We are very proud of her!” said coach Angel Silva.

The Rams were led by junior co-captain Kyril Van Schendel, who won the heat in 15:55, the fastest Division V time overall on the day. Junior Ian MacFarlane also ran in the race, placing 31st in 18:01, followed by senior co-captain Henry Walsh, 40th in 18:14. Sophomore Josh Shields was 48th in 18:34, and freshman Sean Busse finished 59th in 19:09. The Division V finals will be on the same course this Saturday at 8:05 a.m.

Aquatics Club logs standout performances

Several members of the Carpinteria Aquatics Club set personal records at the Pleasant Valley Swim Team meet over the weekend of Nov. 12 and 13, and Alexis Persoon qualified for the Winter Age Group Championships by finishing her 200 Breaststroke in 2:46.92.

The Endow kids had excellent performances, reported Coach Morgan Youngs. Matthew Endow’s 35.11 finish in the 50 free was good for a personal best and just over a Junior Olympic time. Nathan Endow PRed in the 50 free with a time of 26.17—another near JO qualifier. Twin sister Sydney Endow dropped over 4 seconds on her 100 fly with a new time of 1:17.98.

The Sheaffer brothers also shaved off time on their swims. Eli Sheaffer set a PR in the 100IM with a time of 1:45.34, and Augie finished the 200 free with a new time of 2:31.81.

Guilia Piccoletti swam in her second ever USA Swimming event and took two first-place finishes in her heat in the 100 back and 50 breast strokes. The Fed WanTs To Raise RaTes! How did that get there?

On Nov. 3 at approximately 12:50 p.m. a deputy noticed a white sedan parked behind a motel on Carpinteria Avenue with a man and a woman sitting inside.

When the deputy conducted a records check of the vehicle’s license plate, he discovered that it had been expired since June of 2015 although the tag on the plate was valid until 2017. Approaching the driver’s side window, the deputy reported that he saw the male subject rushing to place an object in his pants pocket.

“When (name withheld) finally opened the driver’s door,” the deputy noted, “I asked him about the false registration tab.” The man replied that he knew the tab was false, the deputy stated, but was unsure of who had put it on his vehicle.

The deputy then asked if the man or the woman he was with were on probation or parole. The woman told the deputy that she was on “active Santa Barbara County probation,” and records revealed that her probation included unrestricted search terms. The deputy then informed the man that he was going to search his vehicle, based on the woman’s probation status.

When the man exited the vehicle, the deputy explained that he was going to pat him down for weapons. The deputy found less than one ounce of marijuana in a baggie in the man’s pocket, and a cigarette box with 1.2 grams of methamphetamine and a broken meth pipe in the man’s other pocket. The man requested that his keys and vehicle be left with the woman he was with, which the deputy allowed, before placing the man under arrest for the drugs, paraphernalia and false registration tabs.

From a carjacking in Ventura

On Nov. 4 at approximately 12:15 a.m., clerks at a gas station on Casitas Pass Road waved a deputy over as he drove through the parking lot. The clerks told the deputy that a red sedan had been parked behind the convenience store since the previous night, and that a white SUV had parked next to the sedan and that a man with a flashlight entered the sedan, took something from it then drove away in the SUV. A records check revealed that the red sedan had been stolen by carjacking in Ventura. Due to the activity associated with the red sedan, the deputy parked in the fast food restaurant lot across the street to observe the vehicle. After an hour there was no additional activity. A Sheriff’s sergeant contacted Ventura PD and they came to tow the sedan, and notified the SB Sheriffs that a white Ford Explorer had been involved in the carjacking. Ventura PD also provided the license plate number of the Explorer, which the deputies forwarded to SBPD and other law enforcement units throughout SB County.

A felony warrant

On Nov. 4 at approximately 5:30 a.m., during a debriefing from the night shift, a deputy learned that a man who was a person of interest in a vehicle theft was staying at a motel on Via Real. The man also had a felony warrant for his arrest and was on SB County probation with unrestricted search terms for drug possession. The reporting deputy went to

the motel and contacted the manager, who provided the guest list for the man’s room number. Three additional deputies arrived to help serve the warrant.

After knocking on the motel room door and announcing “Sheriff’s Office,” the deputy used the manager’s key to enter the room, but the door was secured by an interior chain. Seeing the legs of two people lying in bed, one of the deputies kicked in the door and arrested the man for the felony warrant. A meth pipe was on the bedside table. Deputies searched the room and found four additional meth pipes and 3.7g of methamphetamine in the pocket of a pair of jeans on the floor that the man said belonged to him. The woman who was with the man “collected her items from the room and left,” the deputy reported. The man was transported to SB County Jail and booked on drug charges and his felony warrant.

Starts with the taillight

On Nov. 5 at approximately 3 a.m. a deputy observed a vehicle with an inoperable taillight at a stop sign on Bailard Avenue and initiated a traffic stop. The man driving the car had a California ID but not a driver’s license and admitted to being on probation, then consented to having his vehicle searched. A female was riding in the passenger seat, and when the deputy spoke to her he noticed that she was clutching a purse and holding it closed between her feet. The deputy asked the woman if she would open her purse, and when she did he observed a bottle of vodka about one-third-full.

When asked if the deputy could search her purse, the woman said she did not want him to search it. Due to his observation of the open container of alcohol, the deputy advised the woman that he was going to search her purse anyway. Another deputy had observed track marks on the woman’s arms “(common scarring by drug users who inject their narcotics)” and the deputy asked her if she had needles or “dope” in her purse. The woman denied having “dope,” but stated that she had one syringe in her purse.

Based on the woman’s statements, the deputy put her and the man who had been driving, in handcuffs “pending further investigation.” The deputy opened the woman’s purse and found methamphetamine in a cigarette pack, a syringe with methamphetamine in a makeup case, three meth pipes, a marijuana pipe and a small amount of marijuana.

The vodka was disposed of on scene and the drugs and paraphernalia booked as evidence. En route to SB County Jail, the deputy dropped the man off in the Milpas neighborhood where the man said he had relatives whose house he could walk to.

Always on the job

On Nov. 5 at approximately 1:30 a.m., an off-duty CHP officer observed a white pickup truck driving recklessly southbound on Highway 101 and called 911. The officer followed the truck, which he reported going as fast as 95-100 mph at some points, weaving in and out of traffic and braking abruptly for no apparent reason. The man driving the truck exited the highway at Reynolds Avenue, did not stop at the stop sign, then drove eastbound on Carpinteria Avenue at approximately 90 mph.

Car • PET • teria Lester takes the south by storm

Former Marin County resident Lester the cat is now purrrrfectly settled into his Carpinteria digs. His original humans moved to New York, so he said goodbye to his friends the deer, who always hung out with him in the park behind his house, and came to Carpinteria to live with his humans’ parents. “It is pretty nice here,” Lester said, “My parent owners buy me delicious treats at the Ark and we have lots of cool visitors because they are teachers and kids come to see them. Still, I do miss the deer.”

A Sheriff’s deputy located the truck at a gas station on Carpinteria Avenue and initiated a traffic stop. The driver’s speech was slurred, and he could not find his insurance or registration paperwork.

A second deputy on the passenger side of the vehicle said that the man became uncooperative with him and stated that he was “Drunk as a motherf----er.” The man refused to take a “preliminary alcohol screening” test, and was arrested and taken to SB County Jail where he was booked for DUI. The reporting deputy noted that he had found a glass marijuana pipe in the man’s truck, which the deputy placed on his patrol vehicle while taking

the man into custody. The pipe had fallen to the ground and broken in the course of the arrest.

Chapter 8.14, Cultivation of Nonmedical Marijuana, is hereby added to Title 8 of the Carpinteria Municipal Code to read as follows: CHAPTER 8.14 – Cultivation of Nonmedical Marijuana 18.14.010 Purpose and Intent 18.14.020 Definitions 18.14.030 Cultivation of Nonmedical Marijuana 18.14.040 Public Nuisance 18.14.050 Enforcement Section 8.14.010 Purpose and Intent The purpose and intent of this chapter is to provide reasonable regulations on the cultivation of nonmedical marijuana, in accordance with Health and Safety Code section 11362.2. The intent is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public by requiring that nonmedical marijuana be cultivated only in areas that meet all applicable building standards; by ensuring that evidence of cultivation is not visible to the general public; by preventing odor created by nonmedical marijuana plants and cultivation activities from impacting adjacent properties; and by ensuring that nonmedical marijuana grown in the City remains secured. This chapter is not intended to give any person independent legal authority to use or grow nonmedical marijuana.

No part of this Chapter shall be deemed to conflict with federal law as contained in the Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. § 800 et seq., nor to otherwise permit any activity that is prohibited under that Act or any other local, state or federal law, statute, rule or regulation.

Section 8.14.020 Definitions “Accessory building or structure” means a building containing no kitchen and located upon the same building site as the building or use to which it is accessory the use of which is customarily incidental, appropriate and subordinate to the use of the main building, or to the main use of the land “Apartment” means a separate room or suite of rooms of a part of a building with kitchen or cooking facilities occupied or suitable for occupation as a residence by one full family for eating, living and sleeping purposes.

“City” means the City of Carpinteria.

“Common area” includes, but is not limited to, recreational areas and facilities for the use of the residents of a project, such as playgrounds, community gardens, landscaped areas for common use, hallways, indoor and outdoor courtyards, or other open areas of the site.

“Condominium” means an estate in real property consisting of a separately owned interest in a portion of a parcel of real property or building, including residences, apartments, offices or stores.

A condominium may include, in addition, a separate legally protected interest in other portions of real property.

“Cultivation” means any activity involving the planting, growing, harvesting, drying, curing, grading, trimming, or otherwise processing of marijuana plants or any part thereof.

“Indoors” means inside a fully enclosed and secure structure or within a residential structure.

“Marijuana” means marijuana, as defined in Health and Safety Code section 11018.

“Marijuana products” means marijuana products, as defined in Health and Safety Code section 11018.1.

“Nonmedical marijuana” means marijuana that is intended to be used for nonmedical purposes pursuant to Health and Safety Code section 11362.1 et seq.

“Outdoor” means any location within the city that is not within a fully enclosed and secure structure.

“Parcel” means parcel, as defined in Title 14 of this Code.

“Person” means any individual, partnership, co-partnership, firm, association, joint stock company, corporation, limited liability corporation, collective, cooperative, or combination thereof in whatever form or character.

“Premises” means the area of land in one ownership surrounding a house or building and including any house or building thereon.

“Public place” means any public or private place open to the general public, including, for example, streets, sidewalks, parking lots, parking garages, plazas, parks, playgrounds and schools.

“Rear yard” means rear yard, as defined in Title 14 of this code.

“School” means any school providing

1. All areas used for cultivation must comply with applicable building standards and regulations, including regulations pertaining to ventilation and fire protection.

2. Outdoor cultivation is permitted only within the rear yard of any premises.

3. Marijuana plants shall not be maintained within building setback areas established in Title 14 of this code.

4. Outdoor cultivation is prohibited in all apartments and condominiums.

Cultivation is prohibited in all common areas of apartment and condominium projects.

5. As viewed from a public place, there shall be no exterior evidence of cultivation occurring on the premises, including but not limited to, any marijuana plants, equipment used in the growing and cultivation operation, and any light emanating from cultivation lighting.

6. Outdoor cultivation may not take place on any parcel with a boundary line that is located within 600 feet of the boundary line of any parcel owned or occupied by a school, day care center or youth center.

Section 8.14.040 Public Nuisance A. Any activity or condition caused or permitted to exist in violation of this chapter shall constitute a public nuisance.

B. Cultivation that adversely affects public health or safety, or adjacent or nearby residents, by creating odor, dust, glare, heat, noise, noxious gasses, smoke, vibration or other impacts, or is hazardous due to use or storage of materials, processes, products or waste materials, constitutes a public nuisance.

Section 8.14.050 Enforcement Violation of this chapter may be enforced pursuant to the provisions of this code.

Nothing in this chapter in any way limits any other remedies that may be available to the city, or any penalty that may be imposed by the city, for violations of this chapter.

SECTION 2. Effective Date This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect 30 days following its enactment in accordance with California law; and before the expiration of 15 days following passage, this Ordinance shall be published once with the names of the members of the City Council voting for and against the same in the Coastal View News, a newspaper of general circulation, published in the City of Carpinteria.

SECTION 3. Severability If any section, subsection, sentence, clause, phrase, or word of this Ordinance is for any reason held to be invalid by a court of competent jurisdiction, such decisions shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this Ordinance. The City Council hereby declares that it would have passed and adopted this ordinance, and each provisions hereof, irrespective of the fact that one or more provisions may be declared invalid.

SECTION 4. CEQA Exemption The City Council finds that this ordinance is not subject to the California Environmental Quality Act (“CEQA”) pursuant to CEQA Guidelines Sections 15060(c)(2) (the activity will not result in a direct or reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment), 15060(c)(3) (the activity is not a project as defined in Section 15378 of the CEQA Guidelines, California Code of Regulations, Title 14, Chapter 3, because it has no potential for resulting in physical change to the environment, directly or indirectly) and 15061(b)(3) (it can be seen with certainty that there is no possibility that the activity in question may have a significant effect on the environment).

“Miss Hokusai”

“Miss Hokusai” is a parable. Or it feels like a parable. It feels like David Lynch made an anime parable. It is strange, moody and atmospheric. It is also jarring and, at times, totally baffling.

But I’m not complaining. It’s true, sometimes—a lot of times—obscurity and confusion are no good. When one of my students who didn’t do the reading tries to B.S. his way through an answer with an oral treatise on black holes and jelly beans (I think?), or when my cable company tries to explain that extra $80 on my bill, I’m confused—and I don’t like it. But sometimes I’m confused, and it’s all right, because I just have to think about it a little more. Maybe the thing is especially intricate, enigmatic or deep.

A little intellectual exercise never hurt anyone.

I am going to tentatively put “Miss Hokusai” in the latter camp. The parable is about two Japanese painters: O-Ei (aka Miss Hokusai, Erica Lindbeck) and her father, the famous Katsushika Hokusai (Richard Epcar). All Hokusai does is paint, paint, paint. He will sit for a while, walk around, maybe eat something, then—paint, paint, paint.

It’s like his paintings—including their dragons, ghosts and demons—are Hokusai’s reality. He is completely single-minded. He lives in his studio with O-Ei, and they don’t even take the time to clean the place. As soon as it becomes too messy, they move.

Hokusai does have a wife, and another daughter—who is sick, and desperate for her father’s love—but he totally ignores them.

O-Ei shares something of her father’s other-worldliness. She is aloof and detached. At first she seems like she may be bored, or restless. But it becomes clear that she doesn’t yearn for another life. Several men pursue her with promises to sweep her away, for example, but she casts them aside.

Unlike her father, who is unbreakably placid, O-Ei does occasionally get animated when she is irritated or trying to protect her younger sister. Still, if I had to describe her demeanor in one word, it would be depressed.

The plot of the movie is a loose amalgam of fantastical episodes and mundane anecdotes.

This is probably because “Miss Hokusai” was originally a series of independent short stories about its characters who are based on real-life painters. One set of scenes focuses on Hokusai’s dopey student, Zenjiro (Ezra Weisz). Then we move on to a mystical, dreamturned-reality story about ghostly body parts wandering in the night. Then we take a

look at O-Ei’s relationship with her sister. And so on. The lack of smooth narrative is striking—it draws attention, not to the details of the story, but rather, to narrative itself, and the way in which life stories hang (or don’t hang) together.

“Miss Hokusai” is chock full of these incongruences that abstract away from the particulars of the story and serve to remind us of, or alert us to, various elements of the cinematic (or, by analogy, real-life) medium. For example, most of the film is animated in what I would describe as the traditional anime style. But then there are a couple of scenes—or even just portions of scenes—that are animated with odd, low-tech computer graphics. It’s like we’re back in the 1990s playing Doom or something. It’s unappealing at first.

But, again, these occasional aberrations are striking enough that they have the cumulative effect of drawing my attention to the animation itself—to the way the story was composed.

The same goes for the soundtrack. It includes a few jarring rock guitar riffs that interrupt mostly serene music.

And there are several plot elements that do this sort of thing as well. O-Ei’s sister is blind, and that reminds us of how we get to absorb Hokusai’s and OEi’s visual art. The dreamlike, mystical elements sprinkled throughout stand in stark contrast to the mundane reality of life. The eroticism of O-Ei’s art draws attention to her innocence and inexperience. And Hokusai’s concern with death highlights the fleetingness of life.

These sharp jabs are not introduced so as to disturb or rattle. Hokusai and O-Ei typically observe, as if on a movie screen, the changes and surprises that enter their lives, and they do so with the same calm reserve as they would if a fly moved through their visual field.

Their implacable visages show us how to take in this movie’s incongruities.

We ought not be upset by the oddness, even the absurdity, that life interrupts us with; rather, we should notice it for what it is, and remember that, well, that’s life.

“Miss Hokusai” is rated PG-13 for mature thematic material including sexual situations and images.

Heaven sent

A group of paragliders descended upon Linden Field midday on Nov. 13 after riding the thermals from a launch point near La Cumbre Peak, at nearly 4,000-feet of elevation. About 30 members of the Santa Barbara Soaring Association departed that morning and headed in various directions—some landing on Santa Claus Beach and some at Linden Field. Two of the pilots rode air currents all the way to Fillmore before touching down.

Emily Mistick, who landed at Linden Field with a handful of other gliders, explained that a destination can be difficult to pre-determine in paragliding. “It sort of depends on what conditions we find,” she said. Sunday offered optimal conditions.

The heat created the necessary updrafts for motorless flight, and the light west wind helped as well, Mistick said.

The trip from La Cumbre Peak to Carpinteria took about an hour and a half. How to get back home is just part of the adventure, Mistick said. Sometimes paragliders call friends for a pickup, and sometimes they Uber home.

Major pruning to a formerly 100-foot tall blue gum eucalyptus tree at Heath Ranch Park began on Nov. 16.

To protect people and property from falling limbs, the historic blue gum eucalyptus trees at Heath ranch Park are undergoing major pruning this week. Work crews closed the park for three days starting on the morning of Nov. 15. The blue gums were planted in the 1800s by russell Heath, who owned hundreds of surrounding acres and had his home on the property where the park exists today. The trees that remain today have been spared the ax twice now, once in 2005 when community members decried plans for removal and again last spring when the city again reversed its plans for selective removal. Instead, the specimen found by arborists to be highest risk is being reduced from 100-feet-tall to 50-feet-tall, and pruning will be done on the other trees. The city is in the process of developing a five-year plan for the trees, which could include moving the children’s play structure beneath them.

My son’s job has taken him to Italy where he is a regional manager for a software company. He has fallen in love and plans to marry a lovely young woman he met through his work. They plan a wedding over there next summer. Very few in my family can afford to attend and her family can’t afford to come here. How can we make everybody happy?

Remember the most important people at a wedding are the bride and groom.

Next are the parents of each one. If her family is in Italy then that’s a good place for their wedding. Consider hosting a reception close to home for friends and family to meet them here later. Perhaps the young couple could plan a trip to America for their honeymoon. Family harmony is important so depending on how big a wedding they plan, it would be nice to extend the invitation to close family members with the understanding that there is no obligation to attend the wedding because there will be a reception here for everybody.

Dear Donnie,

I am very upset with my neighbors.

They have a new dog that barks all the time. That’s bad enough, but it gets all the other neighborhood dogs barking. I think the new dog is lonesome because the family is gone all day and leaves the dog in the back yard alone. I hesitate to make enemies of my neighbors, but the barking is driving me crazy. How can I restore peace and quiet?

People are very defensive about their pets so it is not easy to complain face to face. Dogs are pack animals and hate being isolated for long periods. Personally I don’t think people working full time should have a dog that is alone so much.

Does the dog have plenty of water and toys to play with? Is the dog neglected?

You have a legal right to peaceful enjoyment of your home. If the barking is a real nuisance then you should call Animal control at the city. Doggy Day Care is available and you might call them and ask them to mail literature. Another option is for the neighbors to hire a dog walker.

With a little fun and companionship the dog may not bark so much. As a last resort you could record the dog’s barking and play it back to them in the evening or at dinner time. Good luck.

My only son was married a couple of years ago to a very nice girl out of the

area. She is very sweet and shy. When they got married I not only gave them a generous amount of money, I also gave them my mother’s valuable Havilland china plus her sterling silver for 12. She seemed very appreciative and impressed, not only with the sentimental value, but with how much it was worth. When visiting our local antique shop the other day I was shocked to see it all displayed for sale. My goal was to keep it in the family.

Am I entitled to ask for it back? I have a niece who would treasure it.

Of course you have a right to ask for it back, but be prepared to pay the consignment price. Perhaps you neglected to share with your son and his wife your intention to keep these heirlooms in the family. Under those conditions they may have refused to accept the gift. Young people today have more practical tastes than past generations. Be open, honest and sensitive with them. Ask them how to resolve this and express willingness to come up with money. Knowing that another family member wants the dishes and silver may make it easier for them to admit that they never wanted it and pass it on.

I recently attended a women’s retreat through my church. I roomed with a woman I had known socially for a long time. We got along great and became very close. Some of the workshops were very

personal, and I assumed they were confidential. At least the workshop leaders assured us of that. Shortly after I got home my husband confronted me and accused me of gossiping about our marital problems. It seems my roommate had shared with her husband things I had revealed in the workshops. My husband is furious and rightfully so. What do I do now?

I am so sorry. Couples having problems need a lot of help. What better place than a church sponsored workshop? Your roommate broke the rules of confidentiality and should be admonished for that.

You and your husband need counseling to work through your problems together in private. Marriage can be tough at times, but most problems can be solved.

If you love your husband and want your marriage to get better, then do whatever it takes.

Kelsey Amanda Drain of Carpinteria is engaged to be married to Matthew Steven Bender of Shafter, Calif. Kelsey is the daughter of Kim Drain and Matt Drain of Carpinteria. Matthew is the son of Deborah and John Bender, who own and operate a thriving almond farm. Kelsey, a 2012 graduate of Carpinteria High School, received her B.S. in Animal Science from U.C. Davis and is currently a student teacher at Rio Linda High School while pursuing her Master’s Degree in Education. Matthew is a Mechanical Engineering major at U.C. Davis and is currently working as a ski instructor near Lake Tahoe. The college sweethearts, both track and field athletes, were drawn together by their mutual love of sports, agriculture, outdoor adventure

Alicia Sorkin recently spent 10 days visiting friends in London. Sorkin brought her CVN to Greenwich, the site of the Old Royal Naval College where Lord Horatio Nelson, the hero of the sea battle of Trafalgar, was laid to rest. Named a World Heritage Site

by UNESCO, the college was built on the site of Greenwich Palace where Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Mary I were all born. Shakes p e a re p e r f o r m e d there as an actor to Elizabeth I. Sorkin also visited Cambridge, Blenheim Palace, several towns in the Cotswold, Windsor Castle and the botanical gardens at Kew, which she reports were “all amazing … no way to pick a favorite!”

Chris Hecox and her English cousin, Amanda Beart, show off the Coastal View News at Bryce Canyon in Utah, one of the stops on their three-week driving trip through the American Southwest. Their itinerary included Palm Springs, Sedona, the south rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Las Vegas and Catalina Island. Plus they flew to Portland, Ore., for a weekend visit with one of Hecox’s sons and his family. Before they hit the road, Beart spent a week in Carpinteria, meeting Hecox’s friends and other family members. The cousins, whose grandfathers were brothers, first met as children in 1951, and then lost touch for 50 years. Since their reunion, Hecox has several times visited Beart at her home near Cambridge in the UK, and the two have traveled together to Istanbul, Norway and Wales.
