Rainfall didn’t dent drought

Any rainstorm is newsworthy in these days of extreme drought. The storm that moved through California on Nov. 20 deposited .53 inches of rain on Carpinteria, bringing the city’s seasonal total to 1.4 inches, or 62 percent of what is typical for late November. The same storm brought over an inch to Lompoc and Los Alamos. Higher than average rainfall in the North County of Santa Barbara has helped to bring the county’s total to 90 percent of normal, but Lake Cachuma remains at just 7.5 percent of its capacity.

Council to hear law enforcement report

At its next meeting on Monday, Nov. 28, the Carpinteria City Council will hear a report from Chief of Police Services Lieutenant Mike Perkins on local crime and an investigation into rumors that parolees from out of town are being dropped off in Carpinteria. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at city hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. Other highlights of the meeting agenda are tree replacement recommendations by the Tree Advisory Board and reports on the city’s economic vitality and emergency services management. Construction permitted for Carpinteria Ave. bakery

A bakery will soon rise from the empty lot on carpinteria Avenue where boy scouts now sell christmas trees. On Nov. 17 the city of carpinteria Architectural Review Board approved a final review of the 8,080-square-foot mixed-use building at 4819 carpinteria Ave., on the corner of

holly Avenue. the two-story structure will house renaud’s Patisserie and Bistro on the first floor and an office space and two one-bedroom apartments above. the developer, M3 Multifamily, LLc, a Santa Barbara-based firm, will move its office to the building. First proposed in 2013, the project was touted by city officials as an attractive entryway at the west end of the

downtown corridor. since initial approval, the architect requested to raise the height four inches from the originally proposed 29 feet, 6 inches to 29 feet, 10 inches to raise ceiling levels of the residential units and accommodate rooftop equipment. the adjustment was viewed as minor and required no further hearings. the ArB also gave its final nod of

approval to color schemes—a cinnamon accent was added—and details like awnings and overhangs for upstairs balconies and a final landscaping plan.

Architects commented that the French Press building in downtown santa Barbara served as a model for the overall design. twelve new parking spaces will be included on site: two one-car garages for residents, and 10 additional spots.

Green Heron Springs plan reincarnated

Long ago approved plans for residential development Green heron springs at 1300 cravens Lane again entered the planning pipeline on Nov. 17 for a brand new conceptual review by the city’s Architectural review Board. While components of the project first approved in 2007 remain consistent, architect Scott Dinovitz proposed updating the look of 30 condos and one single family home to make the new homes more attractive to buyers a decade after the 2007 plan. Still integral to the plan are ample open space elements, including a community garden and pond as well as solar panels to make it a zero energy development.

ArB member Jim reginato commented, “Basically, you’ve got the same project just different architecture. We approved it before.” two ArB members, chair richard e.

Johnson and Vice chair scott ellinwood, recused themselves from the discussion as board members––ellinwood owns the property, and Johnson is a neighbor. Both men participated in the conversation from their altered perspectives and not as board members, ellinwood for background on the project as the property owner and Johnson as an interested neighbor.

The general flow of the development remains the same, but the proposal delineates more unattached units. “We didn’t want to blow up the old project,” commented Dinovitz. “We want to take it and put our own spin on it.”

Dinovitz described the architectural spins he proposed as either a contemporary modern look or contemporary farmhouse. ArB members generally commented that the drawings were appealing but needed elements to minimize the prominence of the garage doors and simplify overall appearances.

No additional action was scheduled on the conceptual review. “it’s just kind of an initial introduction to get some reaction and see where you want to go,” Dinovitz said to the board.

Bob hill, a cravens Lane resident, took issue with the updated Green heron springs project because it eliminates one-bedroom units and replaces them with two-bedroom units. “You’re adding 11 new bedrooms to the project. When there’re bedrooms, there’re cars,” he said. the previously approved plan in-

cluded adding sidewalks and widening cravens Lane, elements that remain in the updated plan.

Proposed residential units include 10 two-bedroom flats built in townhome clusters; nine three-bedroom townhomes, six single family dwellings, four duplexes, one four-bedroom single family dwelling and a remodeled residence. the project’s complex planning history included a mandatory Local coastal Plan

Amendment by the california coastal commission, which delayed final approval until 2009. Additionally, the Local Agency Formation Commission had to approve annexation of the property to the city of carpinteria, which it did in October 2009. Since then, the developer asked for extensions on construction which were granted until they expired in 2015. this time around, the project requires approval through the city only.

Local couple launches Phoevermore

About five years ago, local couple Ron Thai and Pauline Tran started cooking up plans for a restaurant of their own. Those plans are now the bright and aromatic eatery called Phoevermore at 1017 Casitas Pass Road, in Shepard Place Shops.

Thai, who works by day as a computer software engineer and by night as a restaurant proprietor, called Phoevermore a “passion project” for his family. The Carpinteria transplant grew up in Vietnam, eating the tasty concoctions that emerged from his mother’s kitchen and picking up recipes and cooking techniques along the way.

Thanks to Thai’s early years, and a lot of experience in his own kitchen as an adult, the menu at Phoevermore is authentic Vietnamese, with a spotlight on the highly popular pho. Pho has a rich beef broth made with beef bones, cinnamon, daikon radishes, star anise and roasted amomum tsaoko seeds. It’s

served with noodles, meat and an array of extras that allow patrons to customize their soup—fresh basil, cilantro, jalapeno, sriracha and hoisin sauce.

The Phoevermore menu also includes vermicelli salads and rice dishes that come with the choice of various proteins.

Thai said that while some exotic foods are acquired tastes, Vietnamese dishes are easy to enjoy from the first bite. As a result, the scratch-made meals at Phoevermore have been pleasing customers since the doors opened just over a month ago. “We’ve gotten a lot of support from the community,” said Thai.

Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The lunch and dinner menus are the same, and meals are $10 to $15.

Thai and Tran decided to close on Sundays so that their employees could spend time with their families, and so that they could enjoy a day off with their 10-year-old daughter.

Dear Donald Trump, I hate to inform you, but half the American populace failed you. Rather than getting you into therapy where you belong, they put you in charge of our country.

Don’t be offended, as I’m not a mean person. I just tell it like it is, Donald. We know you love to threaten to sue, including the 11 women who complained you sexually harassed them, but I’m also vocal, and as long as you’re president, I’m going to be watching your every move.

And speaking out.

My name is Mike Rupert, and I’m an American citizen. You see, the problem, Mr. Trump, is that demagogues have a history of upending common decency and of destroying democracies. I won’t allow a con man to do that to this country.

My friends, Mr. Trump, are black, brown, female, Muslim, gay, immigrants, progressive and conservative. They’re not empty, bottomless pits of misery and ugliness. They’re kind, thoughtful, openminded and compassionate.

My friends are the American majority.

And even when we’ve disagreed, we’ve never stooped to the unending, unfettered bile that naturally flows from your mouth.

A brave man is decent, patient, informed. You are none of these. You are the antithesis of what America is, and what we fight for.

A coward destroys, threatens and degrades, usually because he feels completely powerless. Your success derives from intimidating and frightening others.

That’s not a man.

The saddest swan song

I mourn the loss of Steve Nicolaides’ “Talking About Water” column from this newspaper. His observations about our drought-ridden terrain and the troubled state of our planet were always smart, articulate and thoughtful. We need more wise voices like his, especially now when the day’s calamity is served up with our morning coffee. I am deeply sorry for the personal loss that led to his “retirement” and wish for him more hopeful dreams like the “widows from under the trees.”

school notes ‪World famous cellist plays at CHS ‬

Carpinteria High School students were treated to an exclusive performance by a world famous cellist on Nov. 17.

Sol Gabetta visited the school as part of UCSB’s Arts and Lectures program. over 100 students spent third period in the library to hear Gabetta talk about her life as a classical musician and to hear her perform a few stirring compositions.

Born in Argentina, Gabetta learned violin at age 3, and cello at age 4. She has performed at the finest music halls in the world, from the Theatre des ChampElysees in Paris to the disney Music Hall in Los Angeles. Several contemporary composers have written pieces for her, and she has won numerous prestigious awards. She plays on a cello by G.B. Guadagnini made in 1759.

“Every time I play a piece, I think, this is the one I love the most,” she told her CHS audience. “Then tomorrow it’s something else.”

The 35-year-old cellist said that the life of a touring classical musician can be challenging due to the intense travel schedule. She spends a couple weeks, or even just a couple days, in each city.

“We’re almost never in one place for more than five days,” she said.

Nonetheless, she said she loves her career. “For me, it’s not a job. It’s not a job at all.”

Students give new life to old tractor

The Future Farmers of America tractor team at Carpinteria High School, led by instructor Bradley Miles, has finished another tractor and “kicked it out the door,” Miles said. FFA students refurbish tractors and learn all aspects of mechanical repair and maintenance along the way.

The just completed Case tractor belongs to Fred Malzacker, owner of Ventura Hydraulics, whose business has been supportive with parts and repairs for the tractor program.

LED lights inspire festive contemplation

Fred Olivas will show a series of light sculptures during the First Friday event on Dec. 2 at the 910 Maple Gallery, 910 Maple Ave. Describing his sculptures as being “kinetic, incorporating movement, or the illusion of movement with LED lights,” Olivas also noted that he strives for his pieces to be festive.

“They’re mesmerizing and calming,” Olivas said, “this is a kind of high without the drug.”

The sculptures are not intended to tell a story, Olivas explained, but he develops a complete concept before he begins. Tracing a transformation in Santa Barbara

When multi-media contemporary artist Stuart Carey invited photographer Patricia Houghton Clarke to document his transformation from his male persona to Amber the chanteuse, a multi-year set of projects ensued. First came Erasing Lines, a photographic series, and then Metamorphographs, a photography/painting collaboration, and now Erasing Lines: Chrysalis, which will include live documentation of Carey’s Flex by Patricia Houghton Clarke, 2008 transformational process as he “becomes” Amber.

A major feature of the current project is Carey’s willingness to publicly share the very private process of shaving his body, applying make-up and dressing. Viewers are invited to step into a space where lines of gender fade and compassion and understanding reside. Clarke and Carey share their intimate process as photographer and subject during this day-long transformation. Amber the chanteuse will then step into view and perform live with her band X-Tet as part of the exhibition to benefit the Pacific Pride Foundation. In the winter of 1948, Marilyn MacNiven (later Fendrick) and several months old Jane (MacNiven) Benefield contemplate what Christmas is all about. Marilyn’s quilted robe, Benefield remembered, was required to fend off the cold of the Saint Paul, Minn. winters. “We lived in a brick five story building in this picture where, two days later, the whole thing caught on fire and all the children were rescued via ladders by firemen,” she said.

American mash takes a Japanese detour cVn

Wasabi roots are difficult to grow and a pound of roots can cost up to $100. As a result, some people make a wasabi substitute by combining mustard, horseradish and food coloring for a cheap-o alternative. When you buy wasabi paste at your local market, be sure it lists wasabi or wasabi root as its main ingredient.

If you’ve never experienced wasabi, or are trying it for the first time, use a scant 2 teaspoons of wasabi paste in the recipe below. If you like wasabi, I recommend a full 3 teaspoons.

You’ve probably made garlic mashed potatoes or mashed potatoes with cream cheese. But have you tried mashed potatoes with wasabi?

According to the website RealWasabi, wasabi was discovered hundreds of years ago in a remote mountain village of Japan by a farmer who decided cultivate it and, “reportedly showed it to Tokugawa IeyaNEW ADDITIONS FOR NOODLE LOVERS su, a Japanese warlord of the era. Wasabi, in its pure form, is a root that is known for its heat. It’s in the same 1025 CASITAS PASS RD family as horseradish and mustard—two other plants known for their heat. Unlike 1025 chile peppers, which get their heat from capsaicin, wasabi releases a series of hot vapors when grated. I like to use the raw wasabi paste in mashed potatoes, not for its heat, but for its overall flavor.

Green Team crowned AYSO champs

Carpinteria AYSO has new soccer champions. The U14 boys Green Team won first place this past weekend in the Camarillo Area League Playoff Tournament. The boys defeated Santa Barbara 1-0 in the finals, a match that coach Santos Artiaga described as “very intense.” The coach said he was proud of his athletes who “stood together solid as a rock.”

After placing first and second in their interregional league season, both Carp United U14 girls teams competed their way to the championship game at the Area League Playoff Tournament where the blue team eked out a 1-0 win over team red.

In the Nov. 19 and 20 tournament, which took place in Camarillo, Carpinteria’s red team blew through to the semi-finals with a 2-0 shutout against North Oxnard-B, a 6-0 shutout against Ojai-A and a 6-0 shutout against Santa Paula. In their semi-final round, the girls’ hard work paid off with 2-0 shutout against the undefeated South Oxnard.

Carpinteria’s blue team also advanced to the semi-finals with a 3-2 win against North Oxnard-A, a 1-0 shutout against Camarillo and a 5-1 win against Ojai-B. Their perseverance paid off in the semi-final round with a 1-0 shutout against the undefeated Santa Barbara-B. “Each and every player worked hard this season and very much deserved to play in the finals. We are so proud of all of them,” said coaches Jorge Reynoso, Kristen Weis and Kathy Mayer.

U14B soccer takes fourth in playoffs

The Carpinteria United AYSO U14B soccer team finished the regular season with seven wins, two loses and a tie. The boys then played in the Area 10W Playoffs over the weekend of Nov. 18 to 20. Playing five games in two days, the squad gave up only four goals. The U14Bs won their pool and also took fourth overall in the tournament to cap off a successful season.

2016 Boys Soccer Preview

Entering his fifth season as the boys soccer coach at Carpinteria High School, Leo Quintero will be starting a new cycle. “Last year was a bittersweet moment for me personally because the class that I came in with as a freshmen coach, graduated,” said Quintero.

From that batch of seniors, goalkeeper Eduardo “Lalo” Delgado, who went on to play for Westmont College, left a void the Warriors will need to fill. “That’s a very tough spot to replace, that type of caliber, that type of player,” explained Quintero.

But the young coach will benefit from the experience that a few of his underclassmen received during last season. Returning to shore up the defense from the back line are sophomores Edgar Martinez and Alberto Arroyo. Also back is junior Abel Gutierrez who could mainly see time at right back, and senior Jonathon Flores may be another possible starter.

Offensively, Carpinteria returns junior Luis Garcia, who started playing on the varsity squad as a freshman, to the center-mid position. “(Garcia’s) IQ for the game is big; he’s very smart with the ball,” said Quintero. “The plays will go through him; that’s what I’m shooting for, for now.”

As with most years, the Warriors will play a challenging non-league schedule with higher division schools such as Oxnard, Pacifica, Rio Mesa, Dos Pueblos and Bellflower. The team got off to 0-10 start last season but rebounded in Tri-Valley League play, finishing second to Santa Paula before falling to the Cardinals in the final game of the season when both teams came in tied for first at 8-0-1.

Carpinteria travels to take on Pacifica of Oxnard on Wednesday, Nov. 30, beginning at 3:15 p.m.

After a year sabbatical, Cate School boys soccer coach Pete Mack is back in Carpinteria and back on the soccer sidelines this season. “It feels good to be back. The hardest part was not having our dog with us and not being here for soccer season,” said Mack, who took the year off with his family. Although the Rams made it to the first round of the playoffs last year, falling to Temescal Canyon of Lake Elsinore, this year they will have their work cut out for them, having lost 11 seniors to graduation.

Two of those seniors include 6-foot, 3-inch, 190-pound goalkeeper Keller Mochel and fullback Joel Serugo. But Mack will have some talent returning to the mesa with midfielder Ryan Borchardt and 6-foot, 3-inch, 172-pound forward Christian Herman back for their fourth season. Also back is senior Juan Magalhaes, junior mid-fielder Ben Jessup and sophomore Bailor Jalloh, who bring with them a combination of technicality, talent and creativity.

Quick freshman Buba Fofanah should also be a factor. “We’ve got some talent; it’s a matter of trying to get it to fit all together,” explained Mack in what figures to be a competitive Tri-Valley League.

Mack sees Santa Paula as being the favorite to win league. “They (Santa Paula) always have a ton of talent. They’re well-coached; they’re relentless,” said Mack.

Cate opens at home against St. Bonaventure on Thursday, Dec. 1, at 3 p.m.

Cate cross country wraps successful season

The Cate School boys cross country team started its Thanksgiving break competing at the CIF Southern Section Division V Finals at Riverside on Nov. 19. The harriers finished 19th in a 24-team field, bettering its team time from the prelims by two minutes. Junior Kyril Van Schendel led the Rams with a fifth-place finish of 15:24. The performance qualified him for the State Meet in Clovis next weekend, where he finished in 13th place in 2015. Senior Henry Walsh finished his Cate career with one of his best races, completing the flat three-mile layout in 17:31 for 101st place. Junior Ian MacFarlane finished in 109th place with a time of 17:46, a faster time than the week before.

The power of community CVn

a tRaineR’s jouRnal Rob buRke Being a part of a community gives us a sense of belonging, a sense of something real. As humans, we thrive in a communal environment. We relate to each other better when we deepen and refine our sense of place. Communities bring out the best in us, and help us recognize, unquestionably, that we belong together.

So you’re probably asking yourself what’s the relevance of this statement to a wellness column?

Well, within each community exist micro-communities with their own organizational hierarchies. The TurboFit gym is one of those micro-communities and gyms in general are notoriously seen as centers of egomaniacal behaviors where mutual respect gets lost somewhere between the squat rack and the juice bar.

But we’ve worked very hard to make our facility a meathead-free zone. The other day, one of my TurboFit members thanked me for bringing a much-needed infusion of good energy to Carpinteria.

Not only does she love the energy, but she loves the cleanliness of the facility.

Both contribute to her newfound addiction to the gym.

Similarly, one of our revered Carpinteria High School teachers thanked me in a similar way. He has students who have started working out, and together they have bonded over their stories of lifting weights and learning about their bodies. He sees a newfound focus and camaraderie.

But what happens when a community is threatened by outsiders, or when someone within the community feels that they are being excluded? The community either becomes stronger through a member’s established bond, or the character of individual members is tested and loyalty questioned as we are forced to evaluate our solidarity. The community risks faltering until a sense of order is re-established and security is once again restored. In other words, there must be law and order for a community to exist and thrive.

While the following example might seem trivial, there was risk to the order of the gym when a predator appeared.

Chalk!

Chalk is a gym owner’s nemesis. Although it is used to absorb moisture on sweaty palms, it is absolutely unnecessary. Chalk accumulates on the floor, on the weights and in places that are difficult to clean. Out of concern for cleanliness

and presenting a pristine environment for the enjoyment of everyone in our gym community, my policy is that chalk has no place at TurboFit. One night, during a regular cleaning, I notice chalk scattered everywhere. It wasn’t just a little bit of chalk. It was like someone dumped it out of defiance. I called out to the room in my most booming parental voice, “Who has the chalk?”

Twenty-four eyes found the floor and never looked up. Each and everyone in the room shoved their earphones deeper into their head. My question was ignored.

I bellowed the question one more time.

“Who has the chalk?”

Crickets.

And then it happened—one rogue member chose the community over the anarchist as he sheepishly nodded his head in the direction of two guys standing in the corner.

I looked toward Fred, who could best be described as a gym bully.

“Fred, is that your chalk?”

“Yes,” he responded, “and I was going to clean it up.”

The room was frozen. Weights remained on the floor as everyone watched to see the outcome.

In a playful tone, I asked, “Do you know what happens to chalk offenders, Fred?”

I didn’t want to embarrass him too much in front of his friends, but when he responded with a flippant, “nope” and then turned his back on me, I lost my playfulness.

I asked Fred to stay put, as I was about to demonstrate the consequences of breaking the rules: I walked away and returned with our super-powered microparticle-sucking hand-held vacuum. I handed it to Fred.

“Now, let’s make sure this floor looks as good as you found it,” I said.

The nervousness of the room was broken with hysterical laughter from his buddies.

Fred cancelled his membership after he cleaned up the chalk, but community order was re-established.

Now, before you’re left with the feeling that we have a Gestapo-run business here, let me note that gyms in particular are breeding grounds for those who want to test and establish their place in the pecking order. Fact is, big biceps do not elevate anyone’s importance. We’re all equal and to be respected for what we can offer each other as members of this community, and let chalk be the test.

The mouth of Tomales Bay and extending across to Bodega Bay was engulfed in frothy whitewater, closing out our entire exit point. Myself, Ryland Grivetti, Matt May and Brad Greenbaum were looking to paddle out of Tomales Bay, part of the Point Reyes National Seashore 90 minutes north of San Francisco. The plan was to head south to the Point Reyes Lighthouse.

After rounding the second foggiest place on the planet, we would sneak into Drake’s Bay and enter Drake’s Estero, but we had to wait for the swell to ease up.

We camped at Jack’s Beach the first night, on the west side of Tomales Bay. I could tell the incessant roar of the surf left everyone feeling anxious, and they were right to feel that way. The next morning we paddled toward Ducks Beach, the last beach before leaving Tomales Bay. We knew we weren’t going any farther as we watched consistent, 6- to 8-foot surf breaking in deeper water. Instead, we beached our kayaks and scrambled along the coast to get a look at how big it was outside. It turned out it was at least twice as big.

We all agreed to a lay day and to find the closest beach for a possible quick exit the following morning. We pitched our tents in the shade at North Blue Gum Beach, and then hiked up to the terrace atop the narrow peninsula.

After a little bushwacking through coyote bush and poison oak, the four of us eventually connected with a trail in the Tomales Point Tule Elk Reserve, which led out to the tip of Tomales Bluff with a fine vantage point to see what we were in for. But in the time we pitched our tents and hiked along the top of the peninsula, the surf had dropped significantly. It was half as big as it was that morning, and we could see plenty of opportunities to kayak through the surf utilizing a lot of different channels. It eased our anxiety on the peninsula and we were able to enjoy the rest of the afternoon.

When we first emerged from the coyote bush and poison oak, we saw a small herd of Tule elk bedding down in a sloping meadow below a pond surrounded in coastal sage scrub. There were 11 bulls and one cow, the bulls all possessing

There are well over 300 Tule elk in the preserve and over 22 other sites where this California native is found, although there was a time when an estimated 500,000 roamed the state. Due to the usual stressors—over hunting and habitat degradation—Tule elk almost became extinct. By 1874 there were only 30 of the herbivores left, which were found near Bakersfield. They were discovered by a rancher named Henry Miller. All of the estimated 3,900 Tule elk in California today were derived from that last small herd of elk. In 1978, 10 Tule elk (eight females and two males) were trans-located from the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge near Los Banos to Tomales Point.

We ended up seeing 17 bulls grazing and sunning on the point that day. At one point I sat by myself in some coyote bush and waited. Not a lot was happening. Some grazing was going on, a lot of sunning and occasional grooming, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned around wildlife, it’s that patience goes a long ways.

Animal senses are much keener than ours are, so when all the elk stood up facing in the same direction, I was wondering what was happening. Then I heard a lot of thrashing real close to where I was sitting. A coyote was maneuvering through its namesake coastal flora only a few feet on my left. It emerged between me and the elk, meandering across the meadow. The scruffy herbivores just stood at attention and didn’t budge. One coyote wasn’t going to make 11 bulls too nervous, but it was fun watching their reaction.

We stayed with them for a couple of hours, passing time during a calm fall day, which became a rest day. At the time we didn’t know how much down time we needed that day to paddle around one of the most volatile regions of the California coast. It proved to be everything.

The Chamber adjourns to France

The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce hosted a trip to the French Riviera Nov. 1 to 9 with 19 chamber and community members along with their families and friends. The travelers enjoyed an action-packed journey to Nice, France, where they celebrated their time on the Riviera with a group photo (including the CVN) en route to the Chagall Museum and the Mediterranean gardens. They also visited Ventimiglia, Italy, and Monte Carlo, Monaco. Highlights of the tour of France included the Fragonard Perfume Factory, Notre Dame, Grasse, Antibes, Cannes and St. Tropez.

Kathy West brought the CVN along on her trip to Switzerland and Austria with her childhood friend, Susanne Jennings, who now lives in England. The two started their trip in Basel, Switzerland, where they met up before travelling to Salzburg, Austria.

While there, they took a tour of the filming locations for “The Sound of Music,” which West and Jennings first saw together when it came out in 1965. “Salzburg is a beautiful city,” West said, “and seeing the areas where the movie had been filmed was really exciting.” They had their picture taken in front of the church where the wedding scene was filmed with Maria walking down the aisle to marry Captain Von Trapp.
