Freeway closes for Rincon surfer rescue

Southbound Highway 101 closed briefly on the afternoon of Sunday, Dec. 4 when a Ventura County helicopter airlifted a 55-year-old man found floating facedown in the water at Rincon Point.

According to Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District, an off duty lifeguard pulled the man from the water and started CPR around 2:30 p.m. VenPITbull INDuSTRIeS tura County Fire was first on the scene.

After 40-plus years of celebrating Carpinterians from the position of parade announcer, this year Nilo Fanucchi himself will be celebrated at the Holiday Spirit Parade. The longtime community servant will serve as grand marshal of the 2016 parade.

Fanucchi moved to Carpinteria from Chicago 55 years ago. His commentating tenure began in the mid-1970s when he filled in as a sports announcer for an under-the-weather John biachin. That gig parlayed into four decades of entertaining locals with fun and informative facts at local events. His community involvement goes back even further, starting with a volunteer position as a Sunday As grand marshal of the 2016 school teacher. He served on the city’s Holiday Spirit Parade, Nilo Fanucchi incorporation committee, and on myriad will be honored for his many boards and committees for the lions years as a parade announcer and Club, Rotary (serving as District Gover- community servant. nor as well), Parks and Recreation board, Architectural Review board, Salvation Army board, Carpinteria Community Theater, Fire board, Museum board, coaching both girls softball and boys baseball, teaching woodworking to Carpinteria High School students and providing AIDS education to thousands.

The 2016 Holiday Spirit Parade will take place on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 3 p.m.

Pool to close for maintenance

The Carpinteria Community Pool will be closed Dec. 11 to Jan. 3 for winter maintenance. Local man arrested for rare plant theft

A Carpinteria man was arrested on Dec. 2 for stealing two rare plants from a nursery in Oakview last month. During an investigation, detectives from the Ojai Police Station connected Cassidy King, 28, of Carpinteria with the theft of two small succulents, a Haworthia trungata and a Haworthia maughani, valued at $750 and $500 respectively.

The plants were stolen from Desert Images Nursery, located in the 500 block of Prospect Street in the unincorporated area of Oakview, on Nov. 18 and reported to police on Nov. 23. When the crime occurred, the manager recalled only one customer entering the greenhouse that held the plants. The manager also noted the personalized license plate on the vehicle the suspect was driving and provided that information to detectives, who followed up and later showed the manager a photographic lineup. The manager positively identified King of Carpinteria as the suspect.

Over the course of the following week, detectives searched for King and ultimately located him at his home on Dec. 2. He was interviewed and confessed to the theft.

Detectives recovered the stolen plants and later returned to them to Desert Images.

King was arrested for the plant theft and is currently out of custody awaiting his court appearance.

Firefighters enter an Olive Street home to fight a fire that broke out around 8 a.m. on Dec. 5.

House fire destroys family’s belongings

Sisters Deborah and Heather Macneil watched from outside while firefighters extinguished a blaze that broke out in their Olive Avenue home on the morning of Dec. 5. The fire, which seemed to have started in a back bedroom, destroyed the family’s belongings but left residents, the Macneils and Heather’s 18-year-old son Jax Montgomery, uninjured.

According to the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire District, when crews arrived at the small rental house on the corner of Olive Avenue and 8th Street, flames were coming out of the rear entrance and black smoke was billowing from the windows and doors. Residents had already left the building and evacuated their pets—three cats and a dog. Crews put out the fire within 10 minutes.

Deborah, who is studying to be an addictive disorders counselor, said that she was working on a final exam in the front room of the home when she smelled something burning. Investigating, she said, “I went to the backdoor, and I saw the flames in my room.” She said that the origin seemed to be under her bed, but she had no idea what would have caused the fire. Her attempt to hose down the flames failed, and fire crews arrived shortly after.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the Macneils have not been back to the home, which suffered extensive water, smoke and fire damage throughout.

“Everything I have went up,” said Deborah, who did not have renters insurance.

Red Cross assisted in placing the family at a local Motel 6. Deborah said they are “still in shock and don’t know the next step.” She expressed gratitude for friends and neighbors who have reached out to support the family. Readers who would like to help can contact Fawnray Kubae at 708-4138.

Locals deliver supplies to Standing Rock Two thousand pounds of potatoes, 1,000 pounds of butternut squash, cases of beans and rice, bags of carrots and apples, coats and other clothing items were all jammed into The Farm Cart van on the morning of Nov. 30 and driven 1,600 miles to the Standing Rock oil pipeline protest.

Coordinated by Farm Cart owners Jason and Katie Lesh, the delivery of supplies to protestors was inspired by overstocks of potatoes after Thanksgiving. Donnie Watts and Chris Everett volunteered to join Jason in the drive to Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota where they arrived on Dec. 2 to join thousands gathered to protest construction of a pipeline to transport oil from the Bakken oil fields in western North Dakota to southern Illinois. Slated to cross beneath Lake Oahe near Standing Rock, the pipeline jeopardizes Standing Rock tribe’s crucial water supply, protestors argue.

The Farm Cart delivery, which includes donations from many area individuals

and business such as Taco Grande, Albertsons and Roots Farm of Los Olivos, is intended to replenish food and clothing supplies to the protest camp, where temperatures have dropped to 15 degrees.

According to Katie Lesh, Jason and the others planned to drop off the supplies, stay in the camp for about 36 hours before driving back to Carpinteria.

Friday, Dec. 2 update from Jason Lesh: “We are at Rosebud, which is on reservation land directly across the river from Oceti Sakowin Camp, which is the camp on eviction notice. Curli, the Lakota elder running this camp, was very stoked to see our food as it filled up his cellar storage.

They are preparing to stay here for the entire winter, so we spent the day building a kitchen that Food Not Bombs is building to feed the Grandmothers council and volunteer workers during the brutal months to come. It is expected to reach negative 30 degrees in the next month.

On Sunday, Dec. 4, the Army Corps of Engineers denied a permit for construction on part of the disputed Dakota Access Pipeline, essentially halting construction on the 1,172-mile pipeline just north of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.

Helen Margaret Clark Jackson passed away peacefully at 98 years of age at Serenity House in Santa Barbara. Helen was born June 30, 1918 in San Francisco, Calif., the daughter of Charles V. Clark and Henrietta P. Hagen. The Clark family moved to San Diego, Calif. in the early 1930s where Helen met and married Thomas C. Jackson in 1942. The Jackson family relocated to Carpinteria in 1952.

Helen spent many years working at the Carpinteria Herald; she also worked at All Saints by the Sea Episcopal Church where she was an active member. In her retirement she loved traveling many times to Europe where she made lasting friendships. Helen was predeceased by her husband Thomas in 1974, her son Peter Jackson and her sister Elisabeth Cunkle. She is survived by her remaining children, Curtis Jackson (Kathleen) of Bass Lake, Calif., Mary Main (Paul) of Carpinteria, Calif. and Barrett Jackson (Cary) of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren Breeanne Koubek (Paul) and Thomas Main (Lise), and great-grandsons Justin and K.C. Main.

As far as our water supply is concerned, California has seen better days.

Our current drought marks the driest period since record keeping began in 1895, and though we’ve seen rain and snow in some regions of the state, we are gearing up for yet another critically dry year. The recent brief showers have not made a dent in the shortage.

The situation is especially dire here in Santa Barbara County. This past summer, Lake Cachuma—which most of the South County and Santa Ynez Valley rely on for water—hit an all-time low. It’s down to 7 percent.

Take a moment to let that sink in.

With an eye on longterm solutions, the Central Coast Water Authority, a public water agency that delivers drinking water to local cities and water agencies, has negotiated with the California Department of Water Resources to secure up to 12,000 acre-feet of State Water per year as a buffer against future droughts. This sensible, cost-effective, long-term option is awaiting approval by the Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors. Many communities, including Carpinteria, are urging the Supervisors to approve the proposal.

As we face a potential sixth year of drought, the stakes are high: A dry Lake Cachuma threatens to deliver a serious blow to our local economy. Our region’s wine, agriculture and tourism industries provide the greatest percentage of jobs in Santa Barbara County. No water means fallowed crops, fewer agricultural jobs, less locally-sourced harvests, higher prices for food and water, fewer tourists and ultimately an economic slump.

And this might be just the tip of the iceberg.

As grim as it sounds, this is the reality Santa Barbara County could be facing in 2017. Water districts all over the County have been working tirelessly on solutions to mitigate both the risks and the costs associated with limited water supplies.

The Carpinteria Valley Water District’s portfolio of water resources includes not only the Cachuma project, but also local groundwater basins and State Water supplies. But these sources are all strained during drought, and we need relief.

Bottom line: Our District is doing everything it can to protect residents, farmers and businesses from severe drought impacts, and we need the County to join us in taking every opportunity to maintain a reliable water supply.

The best, most affordable solution for additional water supply—purchasing the state water—is before the County Board of Supervisors now. Had the District had this water during the last three drought years, we would have had a full year’s water supply in the bank despite desperate drought conditions.

This purchase won’t solve all of our water woes, but it will help keep our region’s economy afloat as we continue to work towards additional long-lasting, sustainable solutions. We cannot pass up an opportunity to proactively shore up our water supplies at a reasonable price.

Please let your County Supervisors know that you support the reacquisition of suspended State Water.

There has been a lot of talk regarding the removal of a significantly large number of healthy trees in Carpinteria this year, and I’d like to continue the conversation. Many are feeling the loss, particularly for the many beautiful tipuana trees that used to canopy Linden Avenue.

These trees have almost all been destroyed due to roots uplifting pavement, and are being replaced with very small gingko trees, which will take a generation to show significant growth. We now have a very bare looking main street.

Since the beginning of this historical drought in California, the state has lost roughly 12 million trees. This is a time when the community of Carpinteria should be going to great lengths to preserve and protect our healthy trees.

Councilman Brad Stein called the Tree Advisory Board (TAB) a difficult board to serve on due to the emotional attachment people have to trees, according to last week’s CVN article “Parking lot trees spared the ax.” People feel emotionally attached to our local trees because they provide a beautiful and aesthetically rich environment. They provide our local birds with shelter, help clean our air, increase property values, and provide temperature control on warm summer days.

I highly commend Kathleen Reddington, and the other community members who just last week spoke out against the destruction of 11 additional tipuana trees in downtown, saying that they should treasured, not removed.

Most of us enjoy living in Carpinteria because of its natural beauty and charm.

I’m writing this commentary in hopes that we, as a community, will become more involved to preserve our existing trees by attending TAB meetings and giving the trees a voice. Shaking our heads every time a healthy tree gets destroyed isn’t a solution. There are other avenues of correcting the problem of roots uplifting pavement, and it is troubling that this is not being discussed.

Tough times ahead

In his optimistic assessment of a Trump presidency Langdon D. Nevens (“Time for Trump,” CVN, Dec. 1) hoped “maybe he (Trump) will really drain the swamp.”

On Jan. 20, Donald J. Trump will take over as President. On that day America will begin its descent to becoming an outlier, a recluse nation with few friends.

Those who voted for Trump have given frightening power to people who have no mercy or conscience—Dominionists,

The election of Donald Trump to President has spine-chilling parallels with the rise of Adolph Hitler. His appointees bear a startling resemblance to Hitler’s genocidal hierarchy: Herman Goring, Martin Bormann, Adolph Eichmann, Rudolph Hess and Joseph Goebbels. Can you match them up with his presidential appointees?

If I may predict what Martin Niemoller, the German Protestant pastor who became one of Adolph Hitler’s most outspoken critics, would say: “First they came for the Mexicans, and I did not speak out because I was not Mexican. Then they came for the Muslims, and I did not speak out because I was not Muslim. Then they came for the African-Americans, and I did not speak out because I was not African-American.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

I found this in the L.A. Times following Trump’s election: “Let me mourn before I organize. I want to mourn the loss of decency and integrity, compassion and empathy, intellect and class. A president who won’t be trusted

In Allan Roscoe’s letter there seemed a real disgust for anyone he disagrees with—Black Lives Matter, the President, “left wing nuts,” community organizers and the like. And he has the nerve to call everyone else haters! Mike Rupert is right too. Donald Trump is a demagogue and anyone familiar with the term demagogue sees it.

Donald Trump is a coward too. How else to explain his lifelong treatment of women? By his own admission, he’s a sexual predator. I was fortunate enough to have been married to an honest and successful man for over 20 years who knew how to treat women and backed up what he said always! Women can see guys like Donald Trump a mile away and then some. With his history I think the only reason he hasn’t gotten into more trouble with the law is because he’s rich and he can probably buy his way out of almost anything.

Eggnog and pastries

On Nov. 22 at approximately 7:30 a.m. two Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call from a supermarket on Casitas Pass Road and spoke with the store manager, who said that a 69-year-old man who had been told on separate occasions that he was not to return, had come into the store at 6:45 a.m., collected several items in an electric shopping cart and went into the restroom with the merchandise. After the man was in the restroom for several minuets, store staff entered the restroom and found the man eating a pastry and drinking from a carton of egg nog. When deputies asked the man if he’d been told previously not to come back to the market, he replied that he had been told. And when asked why he chose to come back to the store, the man reportedly said, “Where else am I supposed to go?”

The man was placed in handcuffs and taken to a patrol car, and then transported to the Carpinteria sub-station. While processing the man for booking before transporting him to Santa Barbara County Jail, a deputy inventoried the man’s belongings, which included a banner from a business in Ojai. When a deputy called the number on the banner, the business owner said that the sign had been stolen three weeks before and that is was worth $300. The man was charged with receiving stolen property, shoplifting and unlawful entry.

Train wreck

On Nov. 23 at approximately 3:45 p.m. a Sheriff’s deputy responded to a call about a fight on an Amtrak train.

When the train arrived from Ventura, a 27-year-old conductor reported that a female passenger had become rude and physically combative when he informed her that the small dog she was carrying in her sweatshirt was not allowed on the train unless it was a service animal. The conductor had “a visible injury on his face,” the reporting deputy noted. The deputy took a digital photograph of the conductor’s face to submit as evidence, and the conductor then led three deputies to a bathroom on board the train, where he and another conductor had isolated the 45-year-old woman after she pulled on the conductor’s tie and punched him in the face.

Deputies took the woman into custody without incident when they contacted her at the bathroom, as she seemed to have calmed down in the time since the altercation. “She had a brown puppy tucked into her sweatshirt,” the reporting deputy noted, “with the puppy’s face hanging outside the neck collar.”

The deputy also stated that “We left the dog in (name witheld)’s sweater because the dog was secured and it would have been difficult to separate the dog from (name withheld).” The deputy added, “I immediately detained (name withheld) in handcuffs,” though he did not explain in his report what happened to the puppy when he placed the woman in handcuffs.

While leading the woman to the patrol car, the deputy also noted a strong smell of alcohol on her. The woman was arrested for battery and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail, and her dog taken by a local veterinary clinic to be cared for until she was released from custody.

Going the hard way

On Nov. 26 at approximately 10:15 p.m. a deputy saw a man who he knew to be a transient in the laundry room of an apartment complex on Concha Loma Drive. The man was walking out of the laundry room as the deputy approached, then went back into the laundry room where, the deputy reported, it looked as though he was trying to hide something.

When the man came back out of the laundry room and the deputy asked if he could speak to him, the man became confrontational. The deputy reported that the man “was speaking extremely fast and at times his speech became incomprehensible,” which led the deputy to believe that the man was under the

influence of a controlled substance. The deputy also noted past contacts with the man for drugs. The man began pacing back and forth, shouting that he was not going to jail.

The man was told to sit on the curb but refused, and the deputy radioed for additional deputies. The man said that “he was going the hard way,” the deputy reported. Taking off his shirt and assuming a fighting stance, the man said he was going to fight the deputies if they tried to arrest him. When three additional deputies arrived, the reporting deputy stated that the man put his shirt back on and sat on the ground. The reporting deputy then placed the man in handcuffs and notified him that he was being arrested.

Four arrested in warrant operation

A Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department warrant operation on Stanley Park Road led to the arrest of four people on Nov. 30. During their investigation at the home located near the intersection of Highway 150 and Gobernador Canyon Road, deputies arrested Sean Gendron, 29, and Sara Infante, 22, for warrants and resisting arrest, Robert King, 26, for a warrant and for being an accessory, and Lillian Murphy, 26, for being an accessory and resisting a public officer.

Gendron and Infante were wanted for several warrants including two felony vandalism incidents from Jan. 29, 2016. In that case, Sheriff’s deputies responded to evict Gendron and Infante from a Carpinteria hotel room. Gendron was arrested for causing substantial damage to the hotel room, and Infante was arrested for vandalizing two patrol cars at the scene while officers investigated in the room.

King had a misdemeanor warrant for

being under the influence of a controlled substance.

When Sheriff’s deputies arrived to serve the arrest warrants at 7 a.m. on Nov. 30, they encountered Murphy at the front door. Murphy delayed deputies by refusing to open the door. King was called out from the rear of the residence. Murphy claimed that Gendron and Infante were not there, but the deputies swept the rest of the home and located a loaded shotgun, several airsoft type imitation firearms as well as numerous bags of marijuana. King and Murphy, officers learned, were in possession of a medical recommendation for marijuana and were also running/ operating a marijuana collective out of the residence. While Murphy was showing deputies the documentation inside the makeshift office, deputies located Infante hiding under a desk concealed partially by furniture. Gendron was located hiding in the attic area of the master bedroom.

Hothouse pot coming of age in Carpinteria Growers and agencies plod toward legitimacy

By Peter Dugré Follow your nose. Carpinteria Valley greenhouses have converted significant agricultural space to medical cannabis cultivation. In response to the new crop and the unmistakably skunky scent of cannabis wafting down from Highway 192 just outside city limits, anonymous complaints of odors have piled up at the city and county. Yet despite the broad acceptance of cannabis, as evidenced by the passage of Prop. 64 allowing for adult recreational use, the status quo for cannabis growers and regulatory agencies is in a holding pattern as regulation takes shape amid community concerns.

Carpinteria’s boom in cannabis production came well before Prop. 64 and was spurred by California’s Medical Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act (MCRSA) of 2015, which set in motion a state licensing system for the medical cannabis business. All cannabis currently cultivated in Carpinteria is for medicinal use, but commercial growing for recreational use is set to be state sanctioned in 2018.

However, too little is currently known to predict how Carpinteria greenhouses may play into commercial cultivation under Prop. 64.

MCRSA is a collection of three laws enacted to create a state regulatory framework for all components of the medical marijuana industry, including cultivation, and will eventually allow the industry to convert from its current nonprofit system to for-profit, taxable operations.

Under MCRSA, local jurisdictions can create their own ordinances before state licenses begin being issued in 2018. State medical cannabis licenses will only be issued to operations that are in compliance with local regulation beginning in 2018. In the meantime, cannabis growers can continue to operate in compliance with the state’s original Compassionate Care Act. Ariel Clark, a corporate attorney who focuses on cannabis law and provides counsel for medical cannabis caregivers, called MCRSA, “a really wonderful moment for industry, law enforcement and for state and local agencies.” Clark represents the newly formed Cannabis Business Council of Santa Barbara County, and she sees the current environment as one in which the cannabis industry is being birthed into legitimacy.

“The grid needs to be established.

There need to be clear rules to follow and

permits to hold,” Clark said. “We need to have conversations about smell, security, how it affects children. This is healthful discourse.”

The Cannabis Business Council, formed in November as an association of around 30 businesses across the county, operates as an advocacy group with an interest in being at the table as local representatives draw up regulations. The Council is also a buffer between the media and growers who aren’t yet comfortable being publically known. Cannabis growers in the Carpinteria Valley have been mum about their controversial businesses, and defer to the Council as their voice in a time when cannabis cultivation is in the crosshairs of regulations that are clear as mud.

Vague new world

Current regulation and licensing requirements are so vague that no SB County agency keeps records of the amount of greenhouse space that is dedicated to cannabis cultivation, nor measurements of volume of production. Debbie Trupe of the Santa Barbara County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office said, “Whether a farmer plants a field in cannabis, onions or strawberries, they never ask our permission prior to doing that.” She said if new pesticides are used, growers register with the County, and some cannabis growers have done so, but unless there’s a change in chemicals, cannabis growers haven’t historically been compelled to ask permission.

County Deputy Director Dennis Bozanich has been the point person between the Planning Department and Sheriff’s Department and other departments performing inspections prompted by complaints. Planners check for code compliance; the Sheriff’s Department looks at the books to ensure compliance with the Compassionate Care Act by verifying the paper trail that connects patients with their medicine.

Simple violations, such as improperly permitted electrical or irrigation systems, can result in shutting down cannabis growing operations. Steve Mason of the Planning Department has inspected growing sites and has also fielded complaints. “We look at it from a compliance standpoint and treat everyone equally,” he said. Of seven sites inspected in Carpinteria Valley, one so far was ruled legitimate and three voluntarily quit growing cannabis. Three cases remain open at the county level—under inspection by either the Planning or Sheriff’s departments.

Article X has teeth

The date Jan. 19, 2016, is particularly meaningful to cannabis cultivators in the county. Growers in operation before that date are grandfathered in as “legal non-conforming”: they can continue cultivation as long as they meet county codes and state regulations under the Compassionate Care Act. ––Liz Rogen, founding member of the Cannabis Business Council begun after Jan. 19 are illegal as specified in Article X early this year, inacted by county supervisors to put new county medical cannabis growing on hold until local ordinances are developed.

Yet even the legal nonconforming operations face stiff challenges if greenhouses were not historically permitted properly, or if alterations to accommodate cannabis cultivation were not approved by the county. Any violation can revoke the legal nonconforming status under Article X, and there’s no way to re-apply.

Public complaints against greenhouses have been all related to odor, but there are no regulations against odor: “There’s no (odor) threshold. It’s not like CO2 or smog,” Bozanich said.

Carpinteria City Councilman Brad Stein said the city “does its due diligence on a complaint basis.” He said the administration at Carpinteria High School filed complaints about cannabis odor from a neighboring greenhouse. “The sheriff’s department investigated, and it was legit,” he said. State law stipulates a 600-foot buffer between schools and cannabis business activity.

Stepping into the light of day

Nobody wants to talk about it. Growers realize the subject of cannabis remains taboo to some, and the secretive nature of the business in the currently nonexistent regulatory framework only adds to suspicion. The federal government still considers marijuana a Schedule 1 controlled substance—the same category as heroin and LSD. While 60 percent of Santa Barbara County residents approved legalization of marijuana for recreational use, the other 40 percent thought it was a bad idea.

The passage of Prop. 64 in November signaled that, starting in 2018, the state will open a new market for cannabis sales, and entrepreneurs will undoubtedly seek to cultivate the supply to meet the demand for recreational marijuana.

Carpinteria Valley has the infrastructure in place and already an unknown number of cultivators of

medical marijuana.

Grower Liz Rogen, a founding member of the Cannabis Business Council, explained the reluctance of growers to talk.

“It’s less about having something to hide,” she said, “but government hasn’t created clarity, which is what industries like.”

Rogen, who has been locally involved with medical cannabis collectives for 15 years, said she and her fellow growers see the opportunity to now streamline regulation. “We’re working to create smart, fair regulations that contribute to the well being of our community,” she said.

In the meantime, counties and cities across the state face a ticking clock toward January 2018, when local ordinances will be used as the first line of regulations when the state begins issuing licenses both for medical and commercial growing. The grow operations that existed before MCRSA was signed into law in 2015 will be given precedence in state licensing, provided they meet local regulations.

At the California State Association of County Governments meeting last week in Palm Springs, there were daily presentations on different aspects of local cannabis regulation. “It’s evidence of the level of interest, and the fact we’re all trying to understand this going forward,” commented Bozanich.

“There are easy solutions, but since it’s been taboo so long, people have a lot of mixed feelings,” Rogen said. “Cannabis means business, and when it’s viewed like that, we’ll be able to move forward.”

Personal growing is A-OK

Though commercial marijuana growing remains a complicated matter, individual cultivation and recreational use became legal immediately when Prop. 64 passed in November.

Anyone 21 or over can now grow or smoke marijuana, and the law allows for six plants to be grown per residence. Smoking is illegal in public places and anywhere that tobacco smoking is prohibited.

The City of Carpinteria passed legislation in October that tightened the laws put in place upon passage of Prop. 64. Most of the city’s additional regulation is aimed at restricting marijuana access to youth. Outdoor cultivation must be hidden from public view in a backyard and is prohibited in apartments and condominiums.

Carpinteria State Beach Tide Pool Walk

“Arrival”

The first arrival portrayed in this movie is a baby girl. Her momma, Louise Banks (Amy Adams), welcomes her daughter into the world with open arms. She clutches her tight and won’t let go.

Of course, kids have various ways of letting themselves go. But no parent can prepare for the kind of departure Banks must endure, as, in the opening montage we see her pre-teen daughter sick and dying in a hospital bed, her mother still refusing to let go.

Jump a decade or two in time, and we learn of another arrival—this one a little more out of the ordinary. A bunch of very large, egg-shaped spaceships suddenly appear at various, seemingly random locations around earth. They don’t come in and blow anything up; their inhabitants don’t start abducting people. The ships just kind of sit there, hovering silently a few feet above the ground.

Banks is called in. As it happens, she is a world-renowned linguist who specializes in translating foreign languages. Various governments around the world have made contact with the aliens, who are still just hanging out in their spaceships. But the earthlings have no idea what the aliens are saying.

So they turn to Banks, as well as physicist, Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner), for help.

The aliens, who look kind of look like squid, or Krakens, or something like that, speak/write with a very different language—their words/phrases/sentences look like splotchy, inky circles.

So the translation is slow going at first.

The breakthroughs are small and intermittent. But eventually, Banks starts to pick up the language.

The key thing everyone wants to know is why the aliens are here on Earth. Do they want to destroy us? Or make new friends? Or help us?

Although Banks is able to communicate with the aliens on a regular basis, the answers remain murky.

One thing she does learn, though, is that competence with the alien language changes the way you think. It’s kind of like when you learn Spanish, for example, and someone asks you whether you’ve started dreaming in Spanish. Only this is a lot more comprehensive.

Banks begins having visions (or something) of her daughter. At first Banks doesn’t know what to make of these visions.

It is not until she learns just how fun-

damentally her grasp of this language has changed her thinking, and her perception of reality, that she begins to understand what she is seeing, thinking and feeling.

But she has no time to mull it over, as she also has to use her newfound linguistic gifts to convince Earth’s various numbskull heads-of-state to not blow up everything out of fear and frustration. Banks discovers that as this whole thing plays out, they’ll have to work together.

“Arrival” is a terrific movie. It is tense, gripping and thought provoking. I kept waiting for the movie to revert to sci-fi cliché. But it never did. Though it’s got what you want out of a sci-fi movie—aliens, spaceships, mind-bending plot twists, trippy philosophical questions, etc.— the filmmakers clearly understand what’s tired and what’s not.

This movie is a slow burn. The tension is in the trickle of evidence we get about what is going on with the aliens and main characters. It’s as if, like Banks, we are gradually decoding the language of the movie.

It is totally absorbing.

And the absorption pays dividends. By the end of the movie the filmmakers have done a really nice job portraying, and making compelling, something (I won’t say what) that is probably really difficult to portray without coming off as either painfully trite, on the one hand, or totally unconvincing on the other.

Mood-wise, this movie is hardly a ray of sunshine. But, somehow, amidst all the fog and fear and foreboding, “Arrival” manages to communicate, or rather make vivid, the overwhelming, surpassing value of human life.

It gazes into the darkness, and says, “Yes.” “Arrival” is rated PG-13 for brief strong language.

Gregorio Perez conquers mountains CVN

ORDINARY PEOPLE CLIMBING TO NEW HEIGHTS

DEBBIE MURPHY Gregorio Perez was born in the state of Guerrero in Mexico and later moved to Mexico City. He was able to move to the United States in 1983. Once here, he worked hard to learn English, went to college to learn U.S. history and happily became a U.S. citizen 12 years ago. Gregorio is self-employed as a gardener. He lives here in Carpinteria with his wife Leticia and sons Jordan and Bryant. If you run into Gregorio on the trail, he will always take the time to stop and share with you what he has seen on the trail and his joy of being on the Franklin Trail.

When did you first go up the Franklin Trail?

I had friends who worked on putting up the fencing on the first part of the trail and they told me about the Franklin Trail.

I would run on the trail before it was really even open to people.

You run the trail; have you always been a runner?

Well, when I lived in Mexico I was a runner, yet when I came to Santa Barbara I didn’t know where to run or anyone to run with so I stopped for a long time.

One day I told my wife how I missed running and she was surprised since she had never seen me run. She encouraged me to run again and so I have been doing so ever since then.

How far have you gone on the trail?

When the trail finally opened, I was so happy as I already knew it. I have run

to the top to Camino Cielo three times. It is almost 16 miles round trip and it takes me four and a half hours. I stop and enjoy the view at the top for about 20 minutes. I drink water from my Camelback and eat peanuts and Kind Bars for energy. I’m really hungry and tired when I get home.

Last time, Leticia had two big hamburgers waiting for me and I ate every bite.

I run the trail three times a week. I go on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. I usually run to the second bench or to the end of the second phase. It is dark by the time I come back down, so I wear my headlamp.

Has the Franklin Trail been good for your life?

I’m 59 years old and have been in great health. When I went to the clinic in Santa Barbara for a checkup the doctor told me to keep doing what I’m doing now.

I really love seeing so many people from Mexico on the trail. People are getting healthier.

You usually run after work; have you seen animals on the trail in the evening?

I’ve seen lots of deer and recently a big stag with antlers. I’ve seen bobcats, coyotes and snakes. One evening I saw a bear. I had on my headlamp. I think the light frightened the bear and it ran away. I was surprised to see a bear; it was the first time I had seen a bear in my life. I felt safe.

You have run lots of trails in the Santa Barbara area, how does the Franklin Trail compare?

The Franklin Trail is one of the most fantastic trails. On the Santa Barbara trails you walk under trees or in creek bed areas for a long time before you see a view. On the Franklin Trail there is an open view almost right away. It is up and down and you can see almost anything.

Are you participating in the Turkey Trot?

Yes, I am. The celebration will be at Island Brewing Company on Friday, Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m. The money that is raised will go to finalizing the final phase of the Franklin Trail. I’m honored to be interviewed about the trail since it has become such a big part of my life.

CVN goes backstage with “A Christmas Carol”

By ToBy Theule (aka SpiriT of ChriSTmaS paST) After an 18-year hiatus to raise a family, it’s so grand to be performing in live theater again. It’s been a whirlwind and a joy to be part of “A Christmas Carol” at the Plaza Playhouse Theater. The material is as classic and heart-tugging as ever; Dickens was a social reformer who was deeply concerned about the lower/ working classes, especially the plight of poor children. The transforming power of the three spirits upon Scrooge’s life, the awful, angry curmudgeon Scrooge is, and the redeemed, loving and free man that he becomes, is a lesson for the ages.

and molded by Jordana Lawrence, newcomer to directing this particular show here, but with vast theater experience under her belt. After seven years of performing in this play in other roles, Carter Hampton has taken on the formidable role of Ebenezer Scrooge. Though a younger man than is often seen in this role, he handles it with professionalism,

aplomb and all the exuberance that one would want to see in this classic character.

by Asa Olsson, and we are kept in line by our stage managers Samantha Dei Rossi and Jessica Haro.

Our cast is a mix of experienced actors and absolute newbies to the world of theater. The children in the cast bring

the levity and free-spiritedness of youth.

Luckily, that isn’t the case here, but it does point to the bigger issue of unintended environmental consequences. A traffic jam in a park-like setting is still a traffic jam.

Traffic jams aside, there are things that each of us can do to try to reduce our impact while still enjoying the open spaces we are so fortunate to have easy access to.

Not leaving the trail is a big one. I know that as a kid I would leave the trail only to have my mother scold me and remind me that I had to stick to the path. At the time, I thought it was just because she was worried I would get lost but as I got older I realized that every time I ventured off a path I was trampling habitat. Staying on the trail when hiking or walking is important not just for safety reasons but also because if everyone ventured off the trail, we would have bare dirt instead of local flora along the trail.

Another thing to think of is always packing out trash. A lot of our food comes wrapped up in something, particularly the energy and protein bars that are so convenient to carry on longer walks.

Making sure you take all your trash when you leave an open space is an important part of leaving it the way it is. And if you find other trash, packing that out as well ensures that our beautiful parklands and national and state forests don’t start to look like garbage dumps.

Being safe when heading outside is just as important as considering the surrounding environment. If you visit the seal rookery, staying away from the edge of the cliff keeps you safe from accidentally injuring yourself, and it also helps prevent erosion of the cliff face. With increasing population, it is inevitable that there will be more people in outdoor spaces than there once were, but if we are considerate of those spaces I think we can work together to conserve the natural environment around us.

If you have been reading this column for the last couple of years, you know that I enjoy spending time outdoors. I don’t think I could live in a large city where having access to open spaces meant planning an adventure, not just walking outdoors. I take it for granted at times that I have the beach and mountains right outside my home, but most of the time I look around and think, “Wow, I live here in paradise.”

In recent years, the Opt Outside campaign for the Friday following Thanksgiving has been gaining traction, and as someone who tries to live by the rule of careful consumption and encourages spending time in nature, it is a campaign that I can get behind. However, like all things, there are positives and negatives to encouraging everyone to get outside.

Even here in our beautiful seaside community, we hear of people being unprepared for the terrain and climate our mountains offer.

Let me preface this by saying that I think everyone should have an appreciation for nature. If you haven’t walked on a beach and checked under or around rocks for sea anemones and wavy turban snails, or taken a stroll on one of the beautiful mountain trails we are lucky enough to have access to, I strongly encourage you to do so. But before you do, consider how your footprint may affect the life that you find there.

Often we get wrapped up in our own worlds and distracted from what is happening around us. This holds true when we are exploring open spaces just as it does walking down a city street. I read an article a few days ago about how the millions of visitors to our national parks are changing the national park experience—instead of encountering nature at its finest, now visitors can expect to find cars and long lines of people while they

Thrift “Reincarnated Treasures” Judy Pearce’s mother annually posed her children for the family Christmas cards, and 70 years later, Judy still has two of these treasures. The first is from 1943 and depicts Judy and her brother, Owen Guitteau.

The second, from 1953, includes Dorothy Guitteau (later Dorothy Coe) and was shot when Owen was home on leave from the army before being sent to Germany.

Local artist gives prayers in paint

New paintings by Carpinteria-based artist Arturo Tello will be on display at The Easton Gallery, 557 Hot Springs Road, Santa Barbara, in the show “Prayers of Gratitude” from Dec. 9 to Feb. 12. The gallery will host a reception on Friday, Dec. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m., and the artist will give a talk on his work the following Sunday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. “A landscape painting is a celebration of beauty,” Tello stated, “a prayer of gratitude for open spaces and the path to intimacy with Nature.”

Art Center invites entries to “Contained”

The Arts Center will hold an ingathering for the upcoming exhibit titled “Contained” on Friday, Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Artwork not accepted must be picked up from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. that day. Artists may call the gallery after 4 p.m. to find out if their works have made the show. Submissions may include two and threedimensional art, bin art and jewelry. The fee to enter one piece is $15, or $20 for up to three pieces. Cate boys bounce into basketball season

Entering his second season as the boys basketball coach at Cate School, Andy Gill has good reason to be optimistic.

“This year, we’re returning eight varsity players, we’re looking to hopefully take first or second in the Frontier (League),” he said. The Rams return sharp-shooting junior Marko Pliso, a First Team AllLeague player last year and recently elected team captain this year.

Six-foot, five-inch senior center Mason Mackall should be a force in the paint.

Junior Andy McHarg and senior Chase McCaw are expected to provide Cate with some good guard play.

Gil also looks to freshmen Reid McCaw (Chase’s younger brother), Thomas Nettesheim and Khadim Pouye to pay

dividends. “We’re really excited for their young energy and what they can bring to us,” explained Gil. The young crew may not tally as much game time as the veterans, but Gil expects that in the long run the three will contribute significantly.

Grace Brethren, with whom Cate split its games last year, should be the favorite to win league. Gil expects Thacher to bring good competition. “We’re just very evenly matched, especially with the rivalry game, there’s always more at stake,” he said.

Cate passed its first test with a 51-45 victory over Garden Street Academy last week, Nov. 30, at home. They’ll compete in the Ojai Valley Classic, beginning today, Dec. 8, with the opponent and tipoff time still to be announced.

Rams fall to Warriors

In a non-league matchup against Carpinteria on Dec. 6, Cate School fell to the Warriors by a score of 58-50. Marko Pliso led the way for the Rams with 25 points, which made him the leading scorer of the game, and Mason Mackall provided a strong effort down low with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Cate was able to secure a 25-23 lead at the half after trailing the first quarter, 10-6. “We were able to give CHS a hard time with our zone, but their big players Eli Correa and Noah Nuño were able to hit big threes at crucial points to help carry Carp momentum in each half,” said Rams coach Andy Gil. Cate plays Rio Hondo, defending champions of the Ojai Invitational Tournament, on Dec. 8 at 3 p.m. at Thacher in the first round. The Rams are now 1-1.

Junior Warrior Football seeks boardmembers

Anyone interested in learning more about the Junior Warrior Football program should mark the calendar for a Wednesday, Dec. 14 meeting at 6 p.m. in the Carpinteria High School Cafeteria, 4810 Foothill Road.

The nonprofit organization just completed a successful season of tackle football for youngsters age 6 to 14.

Leadership is searching for new boardmembers and will elect new positions at its next meeting on Jan. 11.

Junior Warriors is looking to add a cheer coach, an assistant cheer coordinator, a fund development lead, members at large, a volunteer coordinator and a snack bar coordinator. The board meets once a month to set and review goals. All board members are volunteers and put in a tremendous amount of their personal time.

november 30 - The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team began their season with a 6-5 win over the Villanova wildcats. going into the fourth quarter, the warriors trailed 4-3, but a pair of goals from senior co-captain Alisa Lemere carried the warriors to the win. “Freshman Sadie Mead scored two goals from the perimeter, while sophomore Jessica Cruz, and senior Morgan whitney added one goal each,” said Carpinteria coach lance Hoffman. “However, the decisive factor in the warrior win was outstanding play from senior goalie Nicole Poulos, who recorded 14 saves, as well as repeatedly shutting down aggressive Villanova counterattacks,” added Hoffman.

December 5 - The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team started its 201617 campaign opening at home against Providence, coming away with a 35-33 win.

“The game was close throughout but the difference down the stretch was Eli Correa’s three-pointer with just over a minute to go to break a 31-31 tie,” said warriors coach Henry gonzales. Carpinteria played 10 players with eight of them scoring at least two points each. “it was a total team effort,” explained gonzales.

December 6 – The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team overcame an early 6-0 deficit en route to a 58-50 win over Cate. The Warriors scored 10 unanswered points to take the lead after the first period, led by Dom Sturdivan’s five points. However, the Rams came out in the second period and outscored Carpinteria 19-12 to take a 25-22 lead into halftime. Eli Correa led the warriors with 21 points and Terrell Richardson added 10, as Carpinteria was able to hold off Cate. “Cate is a very well-coached team with good athletes and we are happy with a win against a quality team,” said warriors coach Henry gonzales. The warriors play in the Fillmore Tournament starting today, Dec. 8, and will go up against Foothill Tech.

Boys soccer

November 30 – The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team lost by a final score of 5-3 to Pacifica. “Pacifica struck fast and with precision, breaking down our defense and scoring four goals in the first 40 minutes,” said Warrior coach Leo Quintero.

Carpinteria then scored three unanswered goals of its own, as Jonathon Flores was able to score in the eighth minute of the second half to get the ball rolling. in minute 23, MacLaine Clayton scored his second goal in as many games, and Luis Garcia buried a left-footed shot in the 36th minute to make it 4-3.

Pacifica scored on a penalty kick to seal the 5-3 victory. “Our second out of 10 tough preseason matches scheduled was a great learning experience with value that will prove essential in moving forward with a group of warriors, who are on a day to day process of understanding how to create success by playing hard 80 minutes from start to finish,” concluded Quintero.

Local karate students shine in tourney

Karate students and instructors from United Studios of Self Defense brought home individual trophies and medals and a seventh-place overall finish from a Dec. 3 tournament. The local school’s 19 competitors were up against athletes from 27 schools, and instructors said students performed exceptionally well in a tough field of opponents.

December 2 – The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team now stands with an overall record at 0-2-1 after falling to Rio Mesa by a final score of 2-0. Warrior coach Leo Quintero highlighted the defensive play by Pablo Ortega, Abel Gutierrez, Edward Delgado, Alberto Arroyo, Diego Perez, Gabriel Barajas and Luis Garcia.

Rio Mesa scored in the 40th minute and in the 78th minute. The Warriors’ toughest opponent is their inability to absorb the necessary information and transfer it onto the playing field, said Quintero.

December 1 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team beat laguna Blanca in a non-league game, 3-0. The warriors opened the scoring off a corner kick from Yaneli Silva. CHS and Cate reap TCAA All-League Honors

The Tri-County Athletic Association (TCAA) recently announced its CIF All-League honor roll for the 2016 Fall Season. It turned out to be a banner fall for both Carpinteria and Cate. The prestigious Player of the Year Award went to Warrior Forrest Van Stein who led Carpinteria’s boys water polo team to the second round of the CIF playoffs.

Three Warrior coaches were also named Coach of the Year: Matt Organista for boys water polo, Dino Garcia in girls volleyball and Charles Bryant for girls tennis. The Cate girls tennis team captured the Tri-Valley League title, while Isabela Montes de Oca won the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s prestigious Phil Womble Award.

The Lancers have two-time CIF MVP Sammi Fisher. “Alejandra Alvarez did an outstanding defending job on their other major scoring threat, shutting her down but also getting in the attack when she had the opportunity,” explained Bryant. “Alejandra Garcia was solid in the back as well, and did a much better job of organizing her fellow defenders,” added Bryant. Carpinteria is now 1-2 overall.

November 30 – The Cate School boys basketball team won 51-45 at home in the season opener for both teams. Marko Pliso started the game with 11 first quarter points. “Very proud of the effort by big man Mason Mackall, a second team all-league player last year who we are hoping has a huge year for us as he is one of the bigger guys in the Frontier League at 6-feet 6-inches,” said Rams coach Andy Gil. Mackall scored 12 points in the victory, while Pliso led all scorers with 18 points. “Good opportunity to start the season with a win and continue to build,” said Gil.

December 1 - The Cate School girls basketball team played their season opener against Bishop Diego in the Cate gym, falling to the Cardinals by a score of 33-19.

“Amber Thiery played a great game attacking the basket and running the offense,” said Rams coach Amy Venditta of her playmaker who finished with six points. Sarah Polowczak also chipped in six points. Morgan Prinz tallied three and Maya Blattberg contributed two. “Laura Vences and Mariam Soliman worked hard to make plays and drive to the basket,” explained Venditta. Cate plays next in the Bird Cage Classic Tournament with games Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 8 to 10.

December 1 - The Cate School boys soccer team opened their season with a 5-0 win over visiting St. Bonaventure. In the ninth minute, senior Juan Magalhaes played a ball across the box that senior captain Ryan Borchardt touched to freshman Harry Corman who deposited it into the net for the first score of the season. Twelve minutes later, sophomore Jack Deardorff placed a ball across the top of the box that junior Charlie Morris drilled into the far post corner. The Rams capped off the first half scoring when senior captain Christian Herman finished a Magalhaes cross from the top of the box in the 36th minute. Cate didn’t get on the board again until the 62nd minute when freshman Buba Fofanah zigzagged his way from about forty yards out, passing by Seraphs en route to burying a shot in the lower right corner, and placed another shot in the same place 14 minutes later to close out the scoring.

Right down Santa Claus Lane CVN

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY I was ten years old in the summer of 1972 when I first saw him. My family was whizzing north in our mid-60’s turquoise Chevy Impala station wagon towards the Miramar for our first Santa Barbara vacation, and the flash of a red and white, saluting merry old soul stole my breath away.

What? How? Santa?! At the beach? In August? And the question that remained though the decades—what genius was behind such a thing?

The genius was Eugene T. Auger who bought five acres along the highway with a house, a cafe and two motels from Phil Mills in 1945. The area became known as Augertown or Augerville, but Eugene had bigger ideas. He envisioned a “Santa Claus Land,” which would bring further attention to the area if mail could be routed through the town for stamp cancellation at Christmas time.

Optimistic and anticipating visitors, Auger built a fruit stand, a fresh-squeezed orange juice bar and a vegetable market, and began working on a post office. Approval was granted before it was built and in November of 1947, Santa Claus, Calif. became a postal center! Mail poured in immediately, and Eugene began stamping the letters with his special stamp bearing the name of the village. Within another year Eugene was ready to have someone else take over the helm for further development, and he found the perfect family in the McKeons.

Once upon a time, Santa Claus Lane offered Christmas year round. The iconic rooftop Santa that beckoned to highway travelers was relocated to another 101-side location in Oxnard over a decade ago.

Pat and Dick McKeon were brothers from a family of five children, all born in Utah. By 1930 the entire family had migrated to Southern California, but in 1940 Dick was heading a household in Santa Barbara, which included two of his siblings, while attending Santa Barbara State College (now UCSB) and working part-time as a bookkeeper for an electrical company.

Pat, the youngest, remained with his parents in Los Angeles until 1942 when he moved north to follow in his older brothers’ footsteps by attending SB State College. He was also newly married to his wife, June, only a year after they both graduated from Belmont High in Los Angeles. Together they worked at

the Harbor Restaurant for several years, she as a waitress and he as a parking lot attendant, saving until they had enough to invest in a new enterprise with Dick and their other siblings.

When Dick was asked in a 1948 newspaper article what made them go into the business, he replied, “It was a natural.

Pat and I both enjoy people and we both love this Carpinteria Valley. It’s not easy to make a living up here and we wanted a place that would meet a real need for the traveler as well as something for the local people. Our most wonderful customers are the little people, the kids. We have a big picture of Santa Claus on a rubber stamp, and I guess we have ‘tattooed’ over 5,000 children in our 14 months in business.”

But that wasn’t the only Santa already making a stamp on the operation. The big guy on the roof was built by a traveling sign maker who approached the McKeons with the proposition to help fund his travels—they agreed and paid him about $500 for the month it took him to construct it out of wood, chicken wire and plaster. A speaker was installed next to him, enabling Santa to talk to his visitors.

“We have Santa Claus talk to them over the loudspeaker and call them by name,” Dick said. “It warms the heart to see the smiles of delight that come to their faces—the smile of a child is the closest

most of us will ever get to heaven.”

By 1950, Pat and June presided over the entire enterprise and together managed the village until 1966. During that time they constructed attractions including a child-sized train, a wishing well, a zoo, and a snowman to keep Santa company.

Other proprietors, including Pat’s sister Mereon, operated The Date Shop, Toyland, Santa’s Kitchen, the Reindeer Room and Santa’s Trading Post, which all became very popular with the locals and travelers.

My family didn’t stop that day back in ’72, and I’m not sure Santa’s loudspeaker was still working. But I wish now that we had, and it was. I would have loved to have seen the look on my brother’s face when Santa boomed down from above, “Hey Jimmy, have you been a good boy this year?” My smile at that would not get me into heaven.

CARPINTERIA VALLEy MUSEUM Of HISTORy

A long, long time ago

Taken around 1880 near today’s Carpinteria Avenue and Santa Monica Creek, this photo shows the heart of Carpinteria in its very early days. In the mid-1800s, the little town center grew to include a post office, a Chinese laundry, a blacksmith shop, a saloon and a town hall. The hub of little Carpinteria changed in the late 1880s, however, when Southern Pacific Railroad extended its line from Santa Barbara. The train station was located on Linden Avenue, which shifted commerce east and steered Carpinteria toward its current configuration.

Cookie decorating magic CVN

TURN UP THE HEAT NIKKI DAILEY Have you ever seen a Christmas cookie so beautifully decorated that it was just too pretty to eat? Yeah, me neither! But knowing the time and detail that goes into making a beautiful cookie, I have ended up feeling a little guilty. Since I was just invited to my first “cookie exchange,” I thought I’d practice a bit to up my holiday game. I sat at my desk and clickity clack, I typed in “Pinterest.com.” Behold, the holy grail of all things crafty and thereby time consuming. Scrolling, scrolling, scrolling—Aha! Gingerbread stars with crystallized sugar bling—perfect.

Into the kitchen I marched to locate the ingredients, and after my dough was made I rolled it out between two parchment sheets, then placed it in the fridge to chill. A few hours later with star cookie

cutters in hand, I cut to my heart’s content and arranged the cookies neatly on a silpat-lined baking sheet.

My first two trays came out exactly as I hoped, with neat edges and looking 100 percent like the star shape I was going for.

This all changed by the time I pulled out my third set of cookies, which had oozed into a sort of spiky circle. I finally figured out that this was because my buttery gingerbread dough was no longer chilled upon entering the oven. That’s all right though, I’d act like the funky ones were meant to be Christmas tree ornaments and entirely part of my cookie plan.

As the hot cookies cooled on a nearby rack, I whipped up some royal icing to line, fill and flood to decorated perfection. With the precision of a surgeon (at least that’s what I told myself) I slowly outlined each of my cookie edges and once set, proceeded to flood in the filling.

Finally finished and proud of my work, I decided to do a taste test to confirm that they were as delicious as they looked.

Yep, they definitely tasted amazing, and suddenly half the tray was gone. Here’s to happy cooking making and eating during the holiday season, big hugs.

Ingredients

6 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon allspice 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3/4 cups softened butter 1 1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar 1 cup molasses 2 whole eggs 1 Tablespoon maple extract Process In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, allspice, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon. Set aside.

Coastal View News accompanied Aeromedicos volunteer pilot Jeff Moorhouse on the weekend of Nov. 18 to 20 as he flew medical personnel to Mulege in Baja Sur, Mexico on the coast of the Sea of Cortez. Staff then flew to Lopez Mateos for a free medical clinic for the residents of the small seaside fishing village located on the Pacific side of Baja Sur. Aeromedicos of Santa Barbara is a nonprofit healthcare organization of volunteer medical personnel, pilots, mechanics, translators and other friends that fly monthly missions to remote regions of Mexico, offering free medical and dental care to people with limited or no other access to care. “We give in Mexico because the need is great and we enjoy the adventure,” Moorhouse said.

“If you have time or talents you’d like to share with Aeromedicos, join us—it’s easy to participate in our monthly ‘adventures in caring!’”

In a mixer, beat the butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Drizzle in the molasses, mixing well and scraping the sides of the bowl a couple of times to make sure it’s evenly combined. Add the eggs and maple extract and mix. Add the flour mixture in three batches, beating until just combined after each addition. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or more if you have time.

When you’re ready to bake the cookies, remove the dough from the fridge and preheat the oven to 350 F. When the dough is soft enough to roll but still firm, divide it in half and roll out each half between two sheets of plastic wrap. Cut out shapes of your choosing and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment or a baking mat. Bake for 12-15 minutes, depending on the size of cutters used, until the cookies are baked through but still soft. Remove with a spatula and allow to cool completely. Enjoy!
