City hires new Code Compliance Supervisor

Ron Alonzo recently took the reins of the Code Compliance Division at the City of Carpinteria. The lifelong Carpinterian said he is “really looking forward to serving the city that I was born and raised in.” After graduating from Carpinteria High School, he earned a bachelors degree in social welfare and corrections. He recently retired from the Santa Barbara County Probation Department, where he worked for over 30 years. Alonzo and his wife have two grown daughters. While he is thrilled to be working for the City of Carpinteria, he admitted, “I’ve got a lot to learn.”

School board approves second year of extended TK

Ron Alonzo’s face is already familiar to many Carpinterians, but as Supervisor of the City’s Code Compliance Division, it will become more familiar still.

A second pilot year of the Early Admission Transitional Kindergarten program was approved by the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education on Jan. 24.

The 2017/2018 program will enroll students who turn 5 during the school year into the pre-kindergarten classes.

The decision was to cap the program at three TK classes limited to 24 students—all students in the Sept. 2 to Dec. 2 age range will be automatically admitted, and early admission students with birthdates after Dec 2 will be admitted by age, oldest to youngest, until the classes are full. Students in the early admission age range will be added to a wait list between March 6 and April 14. More information is available through the school district, 684-4511.

John Carpenter, Carpinteria’s first police chief and longtime former Santa Barbara County Sheriff, passed away on Jan. 26 after a lengthy illness. Carpenter, who was 87, had lived with his family in Virginia for the last 20 years. When the City of Carpinteria was incorporated in 1965, Carpenter was hired to be chief of the new Carpinteria Police Department, a position he held for three years. He was elected Sheriff in 1971 when he was 41 years old and he was reelected four times, serving until 1990.

“He ushered the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office into the modern era and was responsible for implementing many of the John Carpenter programs, policies and procedures we embrace and continue to use to this day. We are proud to have his name on our Main Jail, and I am grateful that he knew we had broken ground on a new jail in our north county, something that he was the first to push for several decades ago. He will be deeply missed.”

Nimmer seeks funds for Purple Fishing

Coastal View News’ Man on the Street Larry Nimmer hopes to add a new line to his already diverse resume: Purple Fishing creator. The local filmmaker has dreamed up a web-based platform that allows Trump proponents and Trump opponents find something—anything—they can agree on. “Most people agree we need to make more of an effort to find common ground,” Nimmer said. To that end, the locally prominent filmmaker, whose personal mission is to provide people with a platform for self-expression, developed the concept for Purple Fish. Users register as either blue or red. They start off by writing a comment on a small fish and releasing it into the water. When users see a comment that they agree with on a fish, they try to hook it. If it was cast by a person of the opposite color, the hook will catch the fish, which will become purple and start to grow. If it’s already purple, it will grow larger. The comments, Nimmer explained, can be anything from the mundane to the political, funny or serious. Some examples are “Newt Gingrich has Nice Hair” or “John Lennon was the Most Talented Beatle” or “Fund Infrastructure Spending with Vice Taxes.”

But first Nimmer needs to fund his effort. He launched an $18,000 Kickstarter campaign on Inauguration Day and is looking for support. To contribute, visit kck.st/2kadGer.

Local teachers engage young minds Curtis Johnson

Chamber of Commerce honors Educators of the Year

Standing in the sunshine on the Carpinteria Middle School field about a month ago, his PE whistle in hand, teacher Curtis Johnson noticed Principal Shannon Coletti striding toward him.

“Usually if the principal’s coming out on the field, it’s not a good thing,” he chuckled. This time, however, Coletti came bearing good news. The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce had just informed her that Johnson would be honored as a 2016 Educator of the Year.

Johnson started teaching at CMS about 20 years ago.

Working day in and day out to spark a passion in adolescents for social studies, computers and physical education for two decades might sound grueling to many, but Johnson said, “I love teaching here. I am happy as can be.”

His goal in the classroom is to guide student-driven learning. It’s not worksheets, multiple choice questions and monotone lectures. Instead, it’s “show me you understand the material.” The right answer can come in the form of a rap song, a podcast, a courtroom scene or a movie. Johnson strives for “fresh and engaging” in his classroom, motivating his students to acquire tools to use throughout their academic and professional careers.

Johnson grew up in the Long Beach area, moving to Santa Barbara to earn a bachelors degree in political science from UCSB. He went on to get a teaching credential from Cal Poly and later a masters in education technology from Asuza Pacific University.

Long before he garnered a reputation as an outstanding educator, Johnson witnessed exemplary teaching from his father. The recently retired music teacher is “the best teacher I’ve ever seen,” Johnson said. He commanded classroom respect by giving respect to his students. He cultivated a learning environment around the idea that, “This is my room, but this is also our room.”

Johnson’s father has now, likewise, witnessed his impressive son in action. Every year, Johnson takes a group of about 50 eighth-graders to Washington D.C. over Presidents Day weekend. The whirlwind, four-day trip, which Johnson volunteers to coordinate, is packed with experiential learning. His father has accompanied him as a chaperone and watched his son ignite the minds of 13- and 14-year-olds around U.S. history and government. He was “very happy,” Johnson said, when he found out his son was being honored this year.

Brett Weiberg

The most successful teachers often seem to have the profession in their bloodline and Brett Weiberg is no exception, with both his mother and father having had careers in education in his hometown of Wrightwood in the mountains of Southern California. Now in his 17th year of teaching in Carpinteria (his first seven years at Main School before it closed, and nearly 10 years at Aliso School), Weiberg has seen generations of students come through his classes.

With an undergraduate degree in horticulture from Cal Poly, Weiberg initially thought he might teach agriculture, but he went into sales after college. He quickly realized that sales was not what he wanted to do, however, so he earned both a multi-subject and an ag-focused credential at Chapman University’s Monterey campus.

Although he has taught early-elementary exclusively—third and fourth grade, but mostly second—Weiberg has also earned his master’s degree in educational leadership and administration at Cal Lutheran University, which opens the possibility of his moving to more supervisory positions within the county school system.

Weiberg had long worked as a summer camp counselor and had started substitute teaching, so he knew that he enjoyed teaching smaller kids. “The little guys make so much progress in a year,” he says of his second-graders. “You see them grow so much.” A significant aspect of his job, Weiberg said, is instilling a love of school: “If kids love coming to school, they’re going to learn.”

Of the Educator of the Year Award, Weiberg said he knew he’d been nominated, but was naturally excited and surprised to have been selected. If the appearance of one’s workspace is any indication, his neatly organized classroom suggests a place of order and concentration (regardless of what havoc 27 second-graders bouncing around might create).

The work of second grade involves learning to read and practice with basic arithmetic. A new math program has been implemented in the district to go with statemandated Common Core standards, which involves student-driven work. Pupils lead conversation and talk about how they solve problems—all this involving a lot of small groups and class rotation. “It’s challenging,” Weiberg admits, “because there is a lot going on.” Nevertheless, the students are more personally engaged and benefit from these new instructional methods.

Newly minted county supervisor talks priorities

Das Williams, the youngish politico who has spent over a decade zigzagging between local and state elected office, is a recognizable public figure throughout the region who has never shied away from the spotlight. Now Santa Barbara County’s First District Supervisor, Williams, 42, counts himself lucky to be living in Carpinteria. Until last month, he spent much of his life away from home stationed in Sacramento as the 37th District Assemblyman.

Williams wears environmentalism on his sleeve and states, “You’ve got to live in step with your values.” When Coastal View News caught up with him at his Carpinteria home he was walking the eco-walk, making sure his electric car got a recharge as soon as he pulled up to the house.

Surrounded by children’s toys, “Homeland” Netflix discs and various other trappings of a working-home environment, Williams offered an unprompted observation: “I don’t want to give oil companies my money. It’s always easy to blame other people, it’s easy to blame oil companies, but it’s more real to say I’m part of the problem and to focus your resources according to values.”

A trash barrel serving as a rain catchment is stuffed with wetsuits and overflows near the front door, and Williams opens the back door to show off his grass-free sustainable garden. He and wife Jonnie, a mental health professional, have owned the home for three years and added an 18-month-old daughter along the way.

Santa Claus Lane improvements

The county has had potential improvements to Santa Claus Lane in the works for a decade, but the prospect of putting in bathrooms and better parking on the small beachway will inevitably lead to big changes to beach access. In order to improve the area, the county would install fencing to funnel beach goers to a single access point for railroad crossing.

“The public doesn’t want something to interfere with getting to the beach,” Williams said. “But one way or another, (the county) is going to clamp down, otherwise people are going to die out there. We need safety accompanied by minimal interference. Who wants to pay for a project with that liability?”

Freeway widening

Williams said he’s with the rest of Carpinteria when it comes to the headache of the massive Highway 101, ramp and bridge overhaul. “We’re going to feel the pain just as bad as everyone else.

We’re going to have pile drivers in our backyard,” he said of the proximity of his home to the Linden Avenue bridge and current site of the gargantuan equipment pounding piles into the earth.

Williams said, “I think Carpinteria has gotten a good deal on the 101. At first, Carpinteria wasn’t getting such a good deal but negotiated to get improvements.

Almost everybody out there wants to suck it up temporarily for eventual relief of congestion. Contrast that with Montecito, which only wanted to fight the project. Carpinteria played ball, because of that you’ve gotten some good improvements on parts of the project.”

Top priority on the new job: environment and clean energy

There’s a dearth of electricity on the Central Coast, which will likely necessitate new natural gas power plants in Oxnard and potentially in Goleta. Williams said he sees an opportunity at the county level to begin permitting a greater quantity of solar power, and his eyes are on the Cuyama Valley, part of the First District. “If 100 megawatts of solar plus some battery storage comes on board it will alleviate the need for a natural gas power plant in the area,” Williams said. Mary Jewell

Mary Jewell, age 96, passed away on Jan. 20, 2017 in Santa Barbara, Calif. She was born in Toronto, Canada to a family of 10 siblings. Her mother, Luisa Coates, and father, Alfred Baker, were both immigrants from Burmingham, England.

Struck with a strong sense of wanderlust and a love for warm weather, Mary moved to California shortly after World War II. Her wandering ways were cut short when she met and married Bill Jewell in February of 1946. Bill and Mary moved from Long Beach to the booming suburbs of the San Fernando Valley, where they raised a family of three children: Carol, Wayne and Bill. Mary loved the beaches of California, and she usually donned a dark suntan to prove it! One of Bill and Mary’s favorite vacation spots was the State Park campgrounds at the beach in Carpinteria. Tragically, Mary lost her beloved husband Bill at the early age of 62. In 1996 she moved to Carpinteria, the beautiful beach-town community where her family had so many wonderful memories. She purchased a home just minutes from the soft sands of the City Beach, where she spent many days reading, walking and enjoying the fabulous views of the ocean, jumping dolphins and the Channel Islands.

Unfortunately by the early months of 2013 Mary’s health was on the decline and she moved to a few different assisted living facilities in Santa Barbara. Her family will miss her “Lucille Ball” ambitious ways and funny sense of humor. She was our Vitameatavegamin Gal! Mary is survived by her three children (Carol, Wayne and Bill), eight grandchildren (Nicole, Mathew, Sarah, Carla, Jason, Christy, Stephanie and Jessica) and three great-grandchildren (Colton, Bella and Zoë).

A service with close family was held at the Los Angeles National Cemetery Chapel.

Dan Spiegle 12/10/1920 – 1/28/2017

With great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father and husband, Dan Spiegle, on Jan. 28, 2017.

Dad was born in Cosmopolis, Wash., on Dec. 10, 1920. He spent his younger years living in San Diego, Honolulu, Loleta and Santa Monica before entering the US Navy in 1942. While stationed on Maui, he painted Navy pilots’ insignias on their jackets, parachute bags and airplanes. After the war, he relocated to Santa Monica and started school at Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. In 1947 our parents met on a blind double-date, which was instigated by two dear friends. It was the perfect match and they married on Thanksgiving Eve that same year. This was the beginning to their 69-plus year love affair.

Dad’s first real break in his art career was with the syndicated comic strip of Hopalong Cassidy. He spent five years capturing Hoppy’s adventures in ink for everyone to experience. He was also fortunate enough to travel with William Boyd, doing sketches for Mr. Boyd to autograph for his fans. During this time Dan III and Kip were born and when the Hoppy adventures ended it was time to leave Los Angeles for the beautiful town of Ojai, where Carrie was born. Mom and Dad found that they were spending more time on the cooler beaches of Carpinteria than at home, so in 1960 they made the move to Carp and Gayle was born. Dad spent his long career drawing for numerous publishing companies such as Gold Key, Dell, DC comics, Marvel, Eclipse and more.

He also worked with Walt Disney Studios capturing their movies and putting them to paper in comic book form; such as “Mary Poppins,” “The Love Bug,” and “Bedknobs and Broomsticks,” just to name a few. Dad was highly regarded in the industry, and well known around town for his watercolor paintings, which many friends and businesses have received through the years.

Our father lived and breathed family, tennis, drawing and watercolors. Our fondest memories with him are when he would get out the tractor and take us around the neighborhood, trick or treating for Halloween. And Christmas was always a spectacular event with Dad capturing it all on his super 8 movie camera with the oversized lights blinding us kids.

Dad loved putting around the avocado orchard on his tractor with his grandkids on his lap. Even his great-grandson, Finley, was able to experience one last ride before the tractor was donated to the Carpinteria High School Ag department.

Dad was a sweet and passionate man and he made our lives truly colorful and wonderful. He will be so dearly missed.

Dan leaves behind the love of his life, Marie; sons Dan III and Kip (Sali); daughters Carrie (Eric) and Gayle; grandchildren Brandy, Paula (Matt), Shana (Kyle) and Shelton; great-grandchildren Peyton, Finley, Kai and Cobin. Not my roar

Yes, we have all heard Donald Trump’s roar. And it has been more frightening and bizarre than we ever imagined. We heard his roar when, with the stroke of a pen, he began tearing apart our democracy, placing a gag order on government agencies, a tax upon Americans to build his wall, threatening the validity of our voting system and the introduction of “alternative facts” as a Trump standard.

His roar often sounds more like a child throwing a tantrum. He’s still debating the size of the crowds at the inauguration, arguing the details of his election victory, and Tweeting constant rants that hint more towards mental instability than the leader of the United States. But then, one day after he took office, we heard the collective roar of millions of Americans using their Constitutional right to protest—a fundamental American right that is intrinsic to our history. In response to Trump’s roar, the largest marches in U.S. history were held in all 50 states, and on all seven continents on Earth (including Antartica.) This roar, the roar of majority, has gotten louder. With every gag order comes a rogue Twitter feed and Facebook page. While the American government attempts this walk towards fascism, the roar of the people is louder. Given his unparalleled low approval rating paired with the largest, most peaceful protests in our history, Trump would benefit from listening to our roar. But I suppose there are important Tweets to send.

So far the actions Trump has taken have been callous, mean-spirited and downright hateful.

Of course if that’s the way one sees the world, this is a wonderful. Most of us don’t. It’s amazing how this country turned into a nation of misery and anxiousness overnight. Many loyal Americans got physically sick after the election.

We must be very vigilant. Our standing overseas has moved from support, to dismay to disgust. Maybe we needed this national jolt to make us pay attention?

Fear is the modus operandi and new normal from the White House. Understanding the power can dilute this fear.

People want to know what they can do—emphasis on the do.

Senator Dianne Feinstein has introduced legislation to overturn Trump’s anti-immigration, anti-Muslim executive order. That is an action. Rhetoric isn’t working. Anthony Romero, head of the ACLU, has staid the same executive order by using the courts. The spectacular Woman’s March was a visual show of force of people who will not tolerate the hate emanating from the White House.

Join an organization that pursues democratic goals—ACLU, Amnesty International, Southern Poverty Law Center—write action letters, join the groups that stand up to bigotry and downright meanness. What do you stand for, anyway?

Shout your non-acquiescence from the Franklin Trail and the Bluffs. Scare the seals with your fervor. Ok, don’t scare the seals…

Rain and mud deterred many people, and high surf kept many seals away. Volunteers recorded 1,855 people enjoying the seals, including visitors from the United Kingdom, China, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, Russia, Ireland, Guatamala, Utah, New Mexico, Washington, Ohio, Oregon, Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, New Jersey, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and New Hampshire.

Natural History Notes

Days of high surf scour sand from beaches, and much of Carpinteria’s beach area now shows exposed bedrock. Understandably, harbor seals appear to prefer sandy areas, though they will be seen on rocks as well when there is no sand, or when repeated disturbances force them to rocky areas closer to sea. Seals that perch a few feet above surrounding rock or beach may have reached their resting place during a higher tide, as harbor seals cannot climb like sea lions.

Born prematurely with Vascular Malformation—a life-threatening blood disorder now in End Stage Renal (kidney) Failure—3year-old Forrest Holt needs his community’s support. Past donations were used to keep the family afloat during their recent six-month stay at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and another round of fundraising is required to meet current and future needs. Rincon Classic

A marine forecast for a good west swell with an ideal SAT. interval between waves (Rincon being a slightly finicky surf break when it comes to the conditions that work there) has the organizers of the Rincon Classic surf contest calling the event on for this weekend. Surfers will hit the water early on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 4 and 5, with heats running from 6:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the “Indicator to Rivermouth” sections of Rincon Point. Free parking and a bus shuttle from the Channel Islands surfboard factory in Carpinteria, 1160 Mark Ave., will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on both days of the event. An awards ceremony and party will be held at Lion’s Park in Carpinteria, 6197 Casitas Pass Road, on Sunday evening after the event. The surf contest is free for spectators and the catered awards ceremony costs $10.

This Native American saying is one of Scott Van der Kar’s favorites—and it’s a major reason why the Carpinteria grower volunteers with The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County. “That’s really why I’ve gotten involved—and why I see it as a worthwhile thing to do,” he said.

The Land Trust helps protect and manage open space, wildlife habitat and agricultural land throughout the county. For example, the organization worked with the Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs to purchase the Bluffs I and III so those areas would remain undeveloped.

Here’s how Van der Kar describes one of the roles of the Land Trust, as well as his own role as a volunteer.

Q: How does the Land Trust work?

A: one important way is by negotiating with willing private property owners—often farmers—to acquire land and conservation easements. Most of the land in the county is agricultural, and it has been preserved because of that. When the Land Trust acquires an easement, the land can stay agricultural. (Editor’s note: A conservation easement is an agreement in which land is sold or donated and/or its development rights are restricted in perpetuity.)

Sometimes, the Land Trust is brought into a discussion between other parties— say, a landowner and the Park Service.

Both parties might want an easement, but they may not have the tools to do it.

The Land Trust can provide knowhow and funding. There are different ways, different approaches. The Land Trust has a really strong background and the expertise to find the best ways to proceed.

Q: How did you get involved with the Land Trust?

A: I was approached by the former executive director several years ago.

Because I’m in the agricultural business, he thought my input would be helpful in understanding farmland and ranches.

I kept saying I didn’t have enough time, but one day he caught me in a weak moment and I said I would like to become more involved.

When I met the people there, I saw it was a great organization and they were great people. It was also a good chance to reach beyond the agricultural community and meet people who are dedicated to conserving the land. It just makes sense to bring together non-farm conservationists and like-minded agriculturists.

Q: What kinds of activities do you do with the Trust?

A: I’m a trustee on the board, helping oversee all aspects of the organization.

I also serve as chair of the finance committee and treasurer of the Land Trust.

By being treasurer and serving on the finance committee, I get insight into the fundraising part and ways to use our financial resources wisely.

Q: What other volunteer activities does the Land Trust offer?

A: docents are needed to lead tours at the Arroyo Hondo Preserve between Refugio State Beach and Gaviota State Park. That’s a great program. They have a very active education outreach program for students from Santa Barbara County and beyond.

(A seven-week docent training will be held at Arroyo Hondo in March and April.) docents are needed to lead tours at the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park as well.

Volunteers also have participated in cleanup days on the Bluffs. Usually cleaning up trash isn’t fun, but I found it was fun with the group on the Bluffs Cleanup day. This kind of work brings together the best people and brings out the best in everyone.

Regular weeding and planting days are being planned for the Bluffs, and at the Salt Marsh, volunteers are needed for ongoing weeding days. At Arroyo Hondo, there are regular habitat restoration and trail-keeping volunteer workdays.

Volunteering with the Land Trust creates the enthusiasm and desire to do more and plan for things that will be part of the community forever.

Q: Going back to that Native American saying, can you elaborate on how it influenced you?

A: That idea just jumped out at me when I read it on a friend’s holiday card. you can’t own the land or control the land forever. you’re really just a steward for the time you’re here.

Art Center draws ’em in for Drawn In

The Carpinteria arts Center held a reception for the Drawn in show on the evening of Jan. 28, and artists and lovers of the arts alike gathered for wine and conversation.

The art will hang until Feb. 20 with ribbons festooning the works of both winners and honorary mentions: First place, greg rang; second place, Kate eden; third place, Mora Dworsky. Honorary Mentions were Brian Tepper, lanny Sherwin, Pamela Hill enticknap and elizabeth Flanagan.

Deadlines approach for art workshops

The Carpinteria arts Center’s great run of classes and workshops continues with two courses beginning Feb. 17 and 18 (registration deadlines Feb. 7 and 8). Beginning Friday, Feb. 17 and continuing for the following four Fridays, presenter Carissa luminess will lead “Painting Birds and Blooms with Watercolors and inks,” for ages 12 to adult. Procore expansion drives down vacancy rate

Carpinteria’s office rental market posted another unprecedented year in 2016, according to an end-of-the-year report recently released by Hayes Commercial Group, with Procore fueling the expansion. Just four office vacancies, representing 2.3 percent of the market, now exist in Carpinteria and Summerland. Since August of 2013 Procore, a construction management software company, has signed nine leases and currently holds nearly 180,000 square feet of office and industrial space in Carpinteria. Last year Procore leased 70,000 square feet of office space at 6395 Cindy Lane and 6303 Carpinteria Ave., and 28,800 square feet of industrial space at 6385 Cindy Lane. LinkedIn (formerly Lynda.com) also expanded in 2016. Procore and LinkedIn will reportedly utilize much of their newly acquired space for employee recreation.

The Carpinterians who will inherit a nature preserve instead of a hotel resort at the east end of Carpinteria Avenue rose to a fundraising challenge presented by The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County and the Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs.

Students at Canalino and Carpinteria Family schools were thanked last week for raising $689.85—much of it in coins—toward the Save the Rest of the Carpinteria Bluffs campaign. Farm Cart owners Jason and Kathryn Lesh, who aided the effort by passing out collection envelopes, were also thanked by organizers.

The Land Trust purchased the Bluffs III property last year in part on borrowed funds. An ongoing campaign to pay for the property, its clean up and an endowment fund is still underway.

The Land Trust is in the process of submitting and awaiting decisions on approximately $1 million in grant applications for the land’s purchase. The California Avocado Festival is known for celebrating Carpinteria’s agriculture, but the festival is also California’s largest free music event, and welcomes over 300 performers every year. The Avofest board donated $1,000 to Band Forever for the first time this year to help cultivate the next generation of musicians. The Avocado Festival also donates to an Avofest Scholarship Fund that benefits Carpinteria High School students, the Carpinteria FFA Program, Girls Inc., the Festival of Trees and the Carpinteria Arts Center.

Girls and dads get ready to sock hop

Rolling up the welcome mat

On Jan. 18 at approximately 8:40 a.m. a Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to Casitas Plaza to investigate accusations of a man repeatedly trespassing, urinating and defecating in front of the Albertsons market. The deputy knows the accused man from numerous previous incidents, and the manager of the store stated the man’s behavior was an ongoing problem.

The manager put the deputy in contact with the authorized representative for the plaza, who then wrote a letter to the man advising him to no longer enter/trespass and/or loiter on the private property of Casitas Pass Plaza.

The responding deputy could not locate the man, but later in the day another deputy found him and attempted to deliver the letter. When the man was presented with the letter, he refused to acknowledge or sign it, and the deputy advised him that the order to stay away from the plaza and the stores there would still be in effect, and that the man would

be subject to citation or arrest if he went to the plaza again. The man then asked the deputy where he should go to fill his prescriptions as he used the CVS and Albertsons stores in the plaza, and the deputy advised him to switch his prescriptions to Rite Aid on Linden.

One screwdriver, no vodka

On Jan. 19 at approximately 5:40 p.m. a Sheriff’s deputy responded to a call from a donut shop in Casitas Plaza about two transient men fighting, and one man threatening the other with a screwdriver.

A witness flagged the deputy down as he arrived, and identified a man sitting on a nearby bus bench as the man with the screwdriver. The deputy approached the man on the bench, placed him in handcuffs and advised him that he was being detained. The witness then described the man with the screwdriver standing over the victim, holding the screwdriver in a threatening manner, “white-knuckling the screwdriver.” An employee of the supermarket in the plaza, along with the witness, attempted to break-up the fight.

The deputy then spoke with the victim, who said that the man had approached him and became angry when he told the man not to loiter near him. The man pulled out the screwdriver, the victim said, and told him he was going to kill him. The victim believed the man with the screwdriver was going to stab him.

Another deputy found a screwdriver matching the descriptions the witness and victim had given in the detained man’s pants pocket. He was arrested and taken to Santa Barbara County Jail.

The jail would not accept him because of a medical condition, but after getting cleared by Cottage Hospital the man was booked into jail later in the evening.

That, sir, is a pipe for smoking marijuana

On Jan. 21 at approximately 8:30 p.m. a Sheriff’s deputy noticed a sedan parked in the back lot of a motel on Carpinteria Avenue with two people inside. The deputy had seen the vehicle 30 minutes before with two people sitting inside. As the deputy approached the driver’s side of the vehicle he noticed damage to the rear quarter panel and wheel, as well as the smell of something burning. A blueglass marijuana pipe was visible on the rear seat of the vehicle. A man was sitting in the driver’s seat and a woman in the passenger seat. The people verbally identified themselves and when the deputy asked about the pipe in the back seat, the man explained that it was for smoking marijuana. Due to the pipe being in plain view, the deputy initiated a search of the vehicle. As the deputy was searching, the man asked him to hand him his jacket from the the back. Looking through the jacket pockets before handing it to the man, the deputy discovered a baggie with suspected black tar heroin. The man was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail for possession of narcotics.

Warriors clinch second victory over Rams

In what has proven to be an ultra-competitive TriValley League, Carpinteria High School posted a solid win over Cate School on the soccer field. The battle between crosstown and league rivals on Jan. 27 found both teams tied deep into the second half, but the Warriors rang up two goals—one on a rebounded penalty kick and another on a header in the last minute—to earn their first victory of the season at Valley Memorial Stadium.

The win evened Carpinteria’s league record at 3-3-1 and improves it overall to 2-9-3. The Rams, meanwhile, fell to 1-5 in league play and 3-7-1 overall. “Coming into the season, I didn’t know much about the rest of the teams, especially having Grace Brethren and Fillmore being added to the league,” said Warrior coach Leo Quintero, whose team lost at home a day earlier to Santa Paula, 4-3. “Obviously after the first round (of league games), we realized that it’s extremely competitive, it’s anybody’s game on any day,” It looked as though Cate would get on the board first in the opening minutes when Baker Fox found himself open near the top of the box. But his shot sailed just wide, and the game remained scoreless. Soon after, the play shifted to the other side of the field where the Rams were kept on defense. Near the 11-minute mark Carpinteria’s Jonathon Basave blasted a shot off the left post, and the game still remained scoreless.

Then midway through the first half, a throw-in by Warrior Alex Ramirez and Ram Jack Deardorff compete for control.

Alberto Arroyo of the Warriors somehow found its way through the defense and past the goal line to put the home team up 1-0. “Sometimes the ball rolls your way, and sometimes it doesn’t. Today it seemed to have gone our way,” said Quintero, whose squad is currently behind Fillmore and Santa Paula in the TVL standings.

Carpinteria carried the one-goal lead into the second half, but Cate ratcheted it up in the second half, led by Buba Fofanah’s ball-hawking pressure in the Warrior zone. In the 48th minute, Fofanah was rewarded for his efforts when his laser shot rocketed into the upper right corner of the back of the net to even the game at 1-1. Although Carpinteria controlled the ball for the majority of the contest, both teams had opportunities to take the lead.

Finally, in the 76th minute, Gabriel Barajas earned a penalty kick. His initial strike was blocked brilliantly by Cate goalkeeper, Cullen Barber but Barajas was able to follow it in to put the Warriors up 2-1. “We just keep coming up a tad short, but our leadership from guys like Captain Christian Herman and Ben Jessup has been outstanding and it’s keeping us in the right mindset,” said Rams coach Pete Mack.

In the 79th minute, Warrior Luis Garcia connected with Maclain Clayton whose header put the game away. The win gave the Warriors a sweep of the Rams, as Carpinteria scored a victory at Cate by a score of 3-2 earlier in the season.

“We had a number of players make huge strides yesterday in their confidence and level of play,” said Mack.

“I couldn’t have asked for much more in terms of work ethic.”

The Rams will host Santa Paula on Friday, Feb. 3 at 3:15 p.m. Carpinteria will host Santa Clara on Thursday, Feb. 2, at 5:30 p.m.

Girls soccer

January 26 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team defeated second-place nordhoff in a Frontier League game, 2-0. “We were able to score fairly quickly in the first half as Alejandra Alvarez finished a Dayne Wagner pass at about the nineminute mark,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Ava Gropper’s goal off a Yaneli Silva corner kick proved to be the margin of victory. “We are learning to play many different styles, and i am impressed with how we are adapting and growing,” said Bryant. Carpinteria is now 8-4 overall and 6-0 in the Frontier League.

January 25 – The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team traveled to Malibu’s pool, “The Shark Tank,” for their second Tri-Valley League contest of the year, falling to the Sharks, 12-5. Nicole Poulos made 18 saves, but a high-scoring first half in which Malibu built a seven-goal lead, clinched the Shark victory. The Warriors finished with 18 steals, led with six from freshman Sadie Mead and three from Leilanie Silva. Offensively, the Carpinteria goals came courtesy of senior co-captain Alisa Lemere, who netted two, and Morgan Whitney, Ana Delgado and Sadie Mead, who each had one. “A strong second half effort by the Warriors was unable to close the gap, though heavy defensive pressure from the Warriors began to pay dividends,” said Warriors coach Lance Hoffman.

January 27 – The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team played their final match in the first round of Tri-Valley League play against visiting Nordhoff with the Rangers coming away with a 3-1 win. Trailing 2-0 in the third quarter, Warrior senior Leilanie Silva scored on a seven-meter shot off a foul to pull the Warriors within one.

Carpinteria began a full-court press in the fourth quarter to even the score, but gave up a final goal with one minute left on the clock, which put Nordhoff ahead 3-1 for the final score. “Warrior goalie Nicole Poulos had another strong game, recording 16 blocks,” said Carpinteria coach Lance Hoffman. With the defeat, the Warriors fall to 7-7 on the year (0-3 in the TVL).

January 28 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team defeated Cate in a Frontier League match, 3-0. “Aisha Duarte had another great game, she scored the first two goals but was a continual threat whether she was shooting or taking on their defenders one on one,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Elizabeth Estrada scored the third goal as she knocked in an Alejandra Alvarez cross. “Defensively, i thought Aly Springer had a solid game … Alejandra Garcia did a great job organizing in the back as well, but in the midfield, Yaneli Silva was awesome,” said Bryant. “Offensively, she played very smart and simple, and defensively she was physical and disruptive to the Rams offense,” added Bryant. Carpinteria is now 9-4 overall and 7-0 in the Frontier League.

January 30 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team beat Villanova in a Frontier League game, 11-2. Ava Gropper and Laura Valdez had two goals each, and Josie Gordon, Xochitl Moreno and Emmelly Santillan scored their first goals of the season. Abril Jimenez, Aisha Duarte, Alejandra Alvarez and Kendra Meza finished the scoring. “We had nine players score and I thought we did a great job of moving the ball around, limiting our touches and moving off the ball well,” said Bryant. Carpinteria is now 10-4 overall and 8-0 in the Frontier League.

January 25 – The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team lost 48-41 to Malibu despite the Warriors’ 29-27 halftime lead. “We had good balance scoring through our nine-man rotation,” said Carpinteria coach Henry gonzales. The Warriors were outscored at the free throw line 17-3 by the Sharks, who had 22 attempts to Carpinteria’s four. “i was very happy with our effort,” said gonzales. “in the second, we continued to play hard and aggressively but couldn’t quite make enough baskets down the stretch,” added gonzales. Overall Carpinteria is 10-10, and in the Tri-Valley League, 2-5.

January 27 – The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team played a TVL game at St Bonaventure, and fell to the top team in the league by a score of 58-34. “They shot the ball well, hitting 10 threes on the night,” said Carpinteria coach Henry gonzales. Overall the Warriors are 10-11 and in league, 2-6. “i’m proud of the fact that our guys continue to play very hard, and with an excellent never-say-die attitude,” said gonzales.

January 30 – The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team had a TVL home game versus Santa Paula, coming away with a 58-51 victory. Terrell Richardson had 21 points and Alex Bermudez had 17 to lead the Warriors in scoring. Santa Paula led 34-21 at the half. “We made some adjustments at the half and played with more intensity, focus and execution in the second half,” said Carpinteria coach Henry gonzales. The Warriors outscored Santa Paula 37-18 in the second half to win the game. Overall, Carpinteria improved to 11-11, and in league to 3-6.

January 27 – The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team lost to Foothill Tech, 58 to 32. Monique Sanchez had nine points for the Warriors, while her teammate Tori Kelly netted 15. “We played the league’s first place team tonight and my girls came out strong and played strong for all 32 minutes,” said Carpinteria coach Amy Bryant. “They never backed down on defense, hustled for every loose ball, and gave this game everything they had,” added Bryant.

January 31 – The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team dropped a game against La Reina 61 to 30. Kayana Diaz led the Warriors scoring with 12 points, off four three-pointers, and Harmony Reed pitched in nine points. “They’ve (La Reina) got a lot of height on their team, and Sydelle Callaway really carries the torch for them,” said Carpinteria coach Amy Bryant. The Warriors held La Reina’s leader to 10 points in the second half, but allowed her to score 17 in the first. Carpinteria plays again on Thursday, Feb. 2, taking on Santa Clara with the Warriors’ current record standing at 7-13.

January 31 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team found their way to a 6-1 victory against Bishop Diego in a Frontier League game. The Warriors opened the scoring with Alejandra Alvarez finishing a Dayne Wagner through ball. Bishop tied the game on a run by their number-10 player. Aisha Duarte grabbed the lead again towards the end of the first half as she hammered in a left-footed shot. Duarte scored again at the start of the second half, followed by goals from Elizabeth Estrada, Alejandra Alvarez and Yaneli Silva. “i thought Aly Springer had a solid game on defense along with Yaneli Silva in the midfield,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant.

January 25 - The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team went into Valley Memorial Stadium to face Santa Paula, falling by a score of 4-3. Santa Paula took the lead in the ninth minute of the first half. Maclain Clayton scored for the Warriors in the 12th minute off a Vincent Gonzalez assist to tie the game. After the Cardinals scored two goals to take a 3-1 lead; in the last minute (40th) of the first half, Armando Soriano cut the lead making it 3-2 at the half. Soriano scored his second goal of the night to make it 3-3 just seconds after entering off a substitution onto the field in the 57th minute, but Santa Paula sealed the victory with a goal two minutes later.

January 25 – The Cate School boys basketball team fell to Thacher, 62-43. Mason Mackall had 12 points, and Marko Pliso finished with nine for the Rams. “I credit (Thacher’s) physicality tonight,” said Cate coach Andy Gil. “They made us uncomfortable and forced us to take tough shots,” added Gil. Cate is now 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the Frontier League.

January 25 – The Cate School boys soccer team got their first Tri-Valley League victory at Nordhoff by a score of 2-0. Juan Magalhaes scored in the first 10 seconds of the game off a through ball from Captain Christian Herman; and keeper Teddy Wecker, making his first ever start in net at the varsity level, kept a clean sheet for the next 79:50. In the 78th minute, Buba “Bubba” Fofanah directed a free kick to the far post from 30 yards out that Herman knocked into the far side netting. “Fofanah, Herman and Baker Fox distributed the ball effectively, and helped put our guys in dangerous scoring positions,” said Cate coach Pete Mack. “In the back, the performances of Wecker, Ben Jessup, and Jack Deardorff were critical,” added Mack. The win moves the Rams to 3-6-1 overall and 1-4 in league play.

January 27 - The Cate School boys basketball team lost to Foothill Tech by a score of 70 to 52. “Senior Pierce Lundt gave us a great night on both ends of the court scoring 12 and shutting down number 11 (Vielbig of Foothill Tech) when we assigned him to guard him in the second half,” said Rams coach Andy Gil. Marko Pliso scored 24 for Cate. “The score today was not indicative of how fun tonight’s matchup with Foothill Tech was; it was energetic and loud, and exciting for all in attendance at Cate,” said Gil. Cate made 13 of 26 at the free throw line. The Rams are now 8-5 and 4-3 in league, and Foothill improves to 5-2 in the Frontier League.

January 26 - The Cate School girls basketball team lost to Bishop Diego on Thursday night, 38-37. The Rams’ Amber Thiery shot for 13 points. “Elle Smith also worked hard both offensively and defensively, ending the game with eight rebounds and 11 points,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta. Sarah Polowczak ended the game with six points. Maya Blattberg scored five points, while Morgan Prinz ended up with two.

“Unfortunately, the Rams beat themselves in a lot of ways in that game,” said Venditta.

January 28 - The Cate School girls basketball team played against Fillmore on Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 59-32. Elle Smith scored 15 points for the Rams. “Amber Thiery took some good shots, but couldn’t get them to fall until the last quarter when she scored eight points,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta. Morgan Prinz was able to put in five points, and Sarah Polowczak hit four. “Overall, the Rams continue to fight injury and sickness, while they also continue to work on running plays, taking care of the ball, and working together,” said Venditta.

January 31 – The Cate School girls basketball team had a game against 18-1 Grace Brethren on the road, falling by a score of 69-27. Amber Thiery had eight points from the point guard position. Elle Smith pulled down 10 rebounds and scored six points, some of which were on put-backs. Morgan Prinz and Piper Brooks scored four points each, and Maisie Oswald and Kaliyah Dorsey scored two points each from the post positions. Overall, the Rams were 13 for 18 from the free throw line.

“The Rams played with a lot of heart tonight, and enjoyed playing the game of basketball,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta.

The Carpinteria High School Boosters Club Meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria, 4810 Foothill Road. The club will begin planning for the concession stand for the upcoming spring track meets. All members and Warrior fans are encouraged to attend.

Wykoff ran with a well-trained stride, the same stride that earned him the nickname “the World’s fastest Man” as well as medals in the olympic Games of 1928, 1932 and 1936.

The services requested depend on partial funding from the School and Libraries Division’s E-rate Program and California Public Utility Commission’s California Teleconnect Fund (CTF). All contracts entered into as a result of this advertisement shall be contingent upon the approval of discounts from the Universal Services Administrative Company (USAC) and CTF and the OWNER’s acceptance of the discounts.

The Contractor shall be responsible to invoice and collect payment of the discounted contract amount from USAC and CTF. The undiscounted contract amount will be the maximum amount that the OWNER is liable. On the day of the bid the Contractor shall supply their Service Provider Identification Number (SPIN) and must certify that their SPIN is “current”, to have their proposal considered. It’s Girl Scout cookie season, readers! Sales will start on Saturday, Feb. 4 and take place in front of Albertsons every weekend through the end of February. Girl Scout troop 50006 recently attended Cookie University in Goleta where they learned about the five skills of the cookie program: goal setting, decision making, people skills, money management and business ethics. A highlight of their university experience was, of course, the cookie tasting, where the girls were able to sample the newest cookie called S’mores, which is a graham cracker topped with marshmallow covered in chocolate. This year marks 100 years of Girl Scout cookie sales. The sale is the world’s largest girl-led business.

At a recent meeting of Carpinteria’s Boy Scout Troop 50, members learned how to retire several worn American flags with proper dignity and respect for the national symbol. Flag retirement has been a tradition for Boy Scouts for decades. “We are privileged to be part of this important process and it gives our boys a chance to think about our nation’s independence and the many who have selflessly sacrificed for our freedom,” said troop leader John Thomas. “If anyone has worn cotton American flags they would like to dispose of properly, Troop 50 is located behind Community Church in the Scout House and we meet on Tuesday nights.”

Festival of Trees thanks sponsors

To wrap up the Seventh Annual Festival of Trees, the Lions Club held a dinner on Jan. 26 that honored the event’s 25 tree sponsors and gave $23,500 in proceeds to the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club for its Arts and Crafts Room. Each year, the Lions Club purchases the trees and staffs the 16-day event with volunteers. Tree sponsors decorate the trees and often stock them generously with gifts. The first Festival featured 13 decorated trees and raised $14,000 for the Culinary Arts program at Carpinteria High School.

Carpinteria’s Boy Scout Troop 50 recently braved the rain to collect non-perishable foods from households all over Carpinteria to help stock the Santa Barbara Food Bank. The dedicated Scouts collected over 622 pounds of food to assist those in need.

the write practice joe bunting You might think, no one can write a book in 100 days. And certainly not a good book. It should take longer to write a book. It’s about the artistic experience!

But let me ask you this: when was the last time you spent 100 days completely focused on your writing?

Because this level of focus can be life changing. If you write a book in 100 days, you’ll write more than you ever have (plenty for a book). Best of

all, you’ll feel creatively invigorated and alive.

This is why Stephen King said, “The first draft of a book—even a long one— should take no more than three months, the length of a season.”

Because writing a book in a short period of time like this gives an energy and focus to your writing that is so much harder to capture when you’re writing a first draft over several years.

That’s why I believe that 100 days is the perfect length of time to write the first draft of your book. Yes, your book will need more work afterward, so we’ll walk you through the editing process, too.

However, after 100 days, you will have accomplished the most important part: You will have written a book! And that’s something to be very proud of.

The question is why aren’t you going to spend the next 100 days focused on your writing?

Upon arrival, Leah discovers that she has inherited her friend’s red car—the car in which she died. As she reluctantly takes possession of the vehicle, Leah constantly hears Judy’s voice in her head, advising her on what to do next. The car terrifies her, seeming to have a life of its own, refusing to slow down on highways, and even appearing to repair itself after the accident. In moments of surrealism as well as humor, Leah realizes that she has been sleepwalking into complacency, and an abusive relationship. She finds her old journal hidden in the red car and begins to reexamine the life she had left behind in California.

A group from All Saints by the Sea Church traveled to Kylemore Castle, a private girls school out in the beautiful countryside of County Galway, Ireland. Built as a private home for Dr. Mitchell Henry of London between 1867 and 1871, Kylemore was sold in 1909 to the Duke and Duchess of Manchester who, unfortunately, had to sell the property because of gambling debts. In 1920 the Irish Benedictine Nuns purchased the castle after they were bombed out of their abbey in Ypres, Belgium in the First World War. The nuns opened a boarding and day school for girls, and Sally Green of Carpinteria noted that “no young lady would get in trouble going to this school.” Green joined Vicki Mouradian and Pat Murdy on the trip to Ireland with other travelers from their church.
