The Rincon Classic surf competition came to town over the weekend of Feb. 4 and 5 with moments of perfection on Saturday, and lesser but still very contestable waves on Sunday.

Sanitary District collects industry honors

the Carpinteria Sanitary district received both the plant of the Year and the Collection System of the Year Awards for 2016 from the tri-Counties Section of the California Water environment Association at its Annual Awards banquet held on Jan. 20 in Goleta. the plant of the Year Award is given annually to the best overall wastewater treatment facility in Ventura, Santa barbara and San Luis obispo counties. the district was recognized for successful completion of a major plant upgrade in 2016 and for its perfect compliance record throughout that project. the Collection System of the Year Award recognized the district for exceptional performance, management and maintenance of its network of 45 miles of sewer pipelines and eight pumping stations that convey wastewater from the community to the wastewater treatment facility. “thanks to a tremendous team effort and with credit to the District’s focus on providing critical system resources, we finished 2016 without a single sewer backup or overflow,” said Matt Oliver, the district’s Collection System Supervisor. the district will now go on to compete with other award winning agencies from across California. the winner of the statewide plant of the Year and Collection System of the Year awards will be announced in April 2017 at the CWeA Annual Conference.

Red hen Cannery’s heirloom tomato and Spice Jam travelled north to the 7th Annual Good Food Awards in San Francisco where it won top honors in the preserves Category. this year, the judges tasted hundreds of preserve entries to identify Red Hen’s winning tomato flavor, and the jam was one of less than a dozen winners from across the country.

Combining the sweetness of Santa barbara County grown heirloom tomatoes with organic cane sugar, lemon juice and organic spices, the flavor won Red hen Cannery owner maureen Foley Claffey the Good Food Award on Feb. 19 at the War memorial building, after a speech by food activists Winona La duke and Alice Waters.

Love letters

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY One hundred years ago a courtship kindled between John and Agnes, teenagers from the farmlands of North Dakota.

When John enlisted in the army during World War I, though, their personal contact was reduced to long letters, filled with descriptions of his days and the yearnings of his heart.

From Fort Sam Houston, Texas, on March 22, 1918, he writes, “Dear Loving Agnes, Your letter was received couple minutes ago, was glad to hear from you.

Suppose you have got the picture by this time for I have sent it about week ago. So you are lonesome, well dear that is too bad. Hope the picture makes you feel better. I get lonesome once in a while myself but I can stand hell of a lot of stuff like that. There will come a day that we be happy again… Soon we will be going across the pond. Oh my would that be sad for me being so far away from mine Dear. Hope every thing turns out good so we could see each other again.”

His next letter is dated June 3, 1918 from Camp Doniphan, Okla.: “My Dearest Agnes, Your most loving letter was received today was very glad to hear from my Dear. I am back now from the hospital and am pretty kind of weak yet and have a pain in my side yet. Wish you could be here with me for I am alone in a tent so I could have a little chat with you…

Wonder where I’ll be year on. Suppose in France dreaming of you.”

John did “cross the pond” and served one year in France before returning home to wed Agnes in November of 1919, and together they had four daughters.

Nearly 20 years after John’s letters to

Agnes, their oldest daughter Mildred was 16 and enjoying a courtship of her own. She was living with her family in Whitman, N.D. and had met Lloyd, a farmer 10 years her senior from Fordville, 20 miles away. His letters aimed for the funny bone as well as the heart. On Jan. 27, 1937 he wrote, “Dear Mildred, Well old man winter is a tough egg when he gets started isn’t he? Or is he ‘aint? If it stays cold much longer I’ll have to start growing a new nose as the one I had is just about all pulled off. Otherwise I’m in good health and feeling fine… They are talking about sending the snow plow up the county road here some of these days.

If they do I’ll be seeing you shortly… I’ll close with all the love and kisses in this neck of the woods.”

A few weeks later on Feb. 18, he began, “Dear Mildred, Well I suppose you thought that I had forgotten you, being that I am so slow in answering your letters, but that isn’t so. I think of you every day honey… By the way did you notice the big cloud of smoke over this way the last few days? Thanks a lot it sure was sweet of you to remember my birthday.

The cigarettes hit the spot here… Well I hope we get a good thaw so I can come out and see you pretty soon, but in the meantime be a good girl and answer your letters quicker than I do. Love and kisses, Lloyd.”

These keepsakes are in my possession because I am the granddaughter of Mildred and Lloyd. After the time came for their love story to continue in a realm beyond this earth, my mother found a heart-shaped red box on a closet shelf, with the inscription on the bottom: “From Lloyd, February 1937.” Gramma would have received the gift between these two letters, and I say well played, Grampa. A carton of cigarettes and a heart-shaped box of chocolates: the foundation of what was to become a 63-year, happily ever after.

Let’s not allow letters like these to be relics of past generations. Cupid is pulling his bow right now; take a few quiet moments and pen a love letter of your own.

Book Swap comes to town

Carpinteria Middle School Librarian Pat Guarnero personally loves books and works professionally to get others to love them as well. With books on her brain around the clock, Guarnero developed the idea of the All Carpinteria Book Swap, an all day, citywide event where lit lovers give away books in the hopes that perfect strangers will likewise love them. The concept caught on among the local reading set, and with Carpinteria Library, Friends of the Library and other school librarians on board, the date for the first ever Carpinteria Book Swap was inked for Thursday, Feb. 23.

“I envision people at the Farmer ’s market, getting groceries or something to eat, or at the coffee shop exchanging books and comments about books. Essentially it will be a day about books,” Guarnero said.

terson inspired the book swap. According to Guarnero, Patterson once commented on how cool it would be if someone took a book they loved and randomly gave it to a stranger. “I don’t remember where or when I read it, but it has stuck with me,” she said.

Patterson is a strong supporter of libraries, donating millions in the last couple years to libraries and reading programs. Guarnero recently applied for and received a $4,750 grant from Patterson’s foundation to fund new materials for the CMS library. She hopes the Carpinteria Book Swap will inspire camaraderie around reading while also honoring Patterson.

Book Swap participants can enjoy one another’s company, share stories and give away any last books at a reception on Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. at Friends of the Library, 5301 Carpinteria Ave. Appetizers and refreshments will be served.

Guarnero explained that the event should cultivate a spirit of giving. “There is no expectation of receiving a book in return—the joy comes from sharing a book you love,” she said.

Obituary

Katherine “Kitty” Jordan 9/9/1924 - 1/21/2017

Our mother, Katherine “Kitty” Jordan, passed quietly at home in her sleep on the eve and early morning hours of Saturday, Jan. 21 in her bed. Her daughter, Carol Gillis, was by her side, and her sons Rocky and Randy Jordan came to witness her sweet passing. Katherine is the grandmother to five beautiful grandchildren and doted on all of her 21 nieces and nephews. Our family is large and loving, although spread out, we are a closely knit group of now over 115 directly related family members.

Kitty was loved by all in her large family and by friends everywhere. She is survived by Carol, Rocky and Randy, and their families and was the last sibling to remain among her brothers and sisters—total of five children of Faris and Virginia Murdy of Van Nuys, Calif. Her sister Doris Clarke lived in Carpinteria and they were soul mates who will be buried next to each other at Carpinteria Cemetery.

Kitty was also busy working as a Warranty Administrator for the automobile industry for over 50 years, working as a reader in her Christian Science Church, and taking the boys to Little League practice. Kitty was married to Edward C. Jordan for over 30 years. He predeceased her two years ago.

Kitty and her sister loved their gardens and were always planting beautiful flowers around their homes—something their father taught them with his love of agriculture.

There is not a soul that Kitty’s great smile, laughter and heart did not touch.

She made life fun, and her mantra to all she greeted was “God is love.” She was friendly and helpful to all—her generosity never waned.

A memorial service for friends and family will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 11 a.m. at Carpinteria Community Church, and a Fiesta Feast will be served after the memorial. Members of the church are invited. Kitty lived at Shepard Place Apartments for over eight years.

She was a resident of Carpinteria for over 25 years, having been born in Long Beach, Calif., and spending most of her life in the North Hollywood/Van Nuys sector of the San Fernando Valley. She graduated from North Hollywood High and attended Jr. College. Kitty was born Sept. 9, 1924. Of note, Kitty was known for her beautiful handwritten script, among her many talents, and sports expertise as a golfer, swimmer and archer in her early years with her husband. Kitty was a great jitterbug dancer. She was an artist and was well traveled.

God bless you on behalf of our mother.

Dissent is patriotic

When I was younger I defined patriotism by my willingness to defend my country. I had great examples: my father and four uncles served in the military.

And even though Vietnam gave me serious reservations I still joined in 1970 and served one of five years in Vietnam. In the years since I’ve tried to live up to the values I learned there—prime among them defending my country and the Constitution. The recent election forced me to re-think my definition of patriotism. Trump gave us an ugly display of mean-spirited antics, nauseating personal habits and outright lies. And who was surprised? He perpetuated the racist birther movement for years and never apologized to the American public for it. Any hope he might normalize disappeared with Steve Bannon’s appointment.

Any critical reporting is “fake news.” He disparages judges who disagree with him and insults their ethnicity. His surrogates whirl themselves dizzy spewing “alternative facts.”

Now I need to defend my country and the Constitution in a different manner. I need to change my definition of patriotism. We can’t change the election results, but we can work to limit the damage he can do, work to elect reasonable, sane people in the mid-terms who will hold Trump’s enormous ego in check before America is irreparably harmed. Despite Trump’s protestations to the contrary, the Constitution still guarantees our freedom of speech and freedom to assemble. Exercise your freedom to speak. Exercise your freedom to assemble. Dissent is patriotic.

Dual Language Immersion lacks teacher consensus

On Feb. 14, the School Board will be receiving a recommendation to adopt Dual Language Immersion (DLI).

Although a small number of proponents and an administrator recommend this program, their efforts to explore the topic of DLI did not include an examination of the wide variety of options available under Proposition 58.

Before moving forward on this expensive and potentially disruptive program, CUSD has not answered these questions: 1. Should this decision be held off until CUSD has a new superintendent and a clear vision of the future?

2. Should CUSD comprehensively explore the wide variety of options that Proposition 58 provides, before committing public monies to this singular program?

3. DLI is a drastic change to the educational model. Has CUSD thoroughly considered the related expenses and unintended consequences?

From my perspective as a bilingual education teacher, DLI would bring significant challenges to CUSD: Prop 58 does not say you must implement DLI. It says you must—“to the extent possible”—implement some form of second language instruction. DLI is an extreme form of second language instruction.

As per DLI supporters, DLI requires total commitment (i.e. “True Believers”) from the faculty who provide instruction.

Currently, CUSD has only a limited number of teachers capable of providing high-quality instruction in a second language. Of those, just three or four are “True Believers.”

Teachers have already expressed, to seemingly deaf ears, that they do not support this DLI recommendation. However, these same teachers would embrace a less drastic option that is designed to support all language learners across K-12.

It’s true, CUSD has the right to force teachers to provide instruction well out of their professional comfort-zones and capacity by either threatening “lay-offs” or involuntary transfers. Does this sound like a productive path forward?

The majority of CUSD teachers know this can be done in a less disruptive and less expensive manner.

As a bilingual teacher, I strongly support learning a second language.

Just not this way.

The cost of implementation remains uncertain, but for this fact—DLI will be an increasingly significant expenditure as the programs grows each year out. In kindergarten, DLI requires 90 percent of the school day be taught in Spanish.

The students in a DLI program must commit to staying the course through fifth grade. But what about those who change their minds, want to return to mainstream classes, are unsuccessful or become discouraged by the low test scores on state tests, which are still required in to be taken English?

There will be attrition, which in turn brings dysfunction. This will impact the composition of regular classes and has the potential of creating highly homogenized classes—socially, ethnically, economically and academically.

Essentially, implementing this program before developing a comprehensive K-12 language-acquisition program in the District creates another specialty school within CUSD. Such scenarios are often the hallmark of inefficiency and unproductive internal competition for resources and talent.

Thirsty Carpinteria has received 146 percent of normal rainfall to date, and the gauges have collected 14.23 inches since the water year started on Sept. 1. The last storm dropped 1.88 inches, and forecasts call for more rain on Friday. despite all the wet weather this winter, Lake Cachuma, one of Carpinteria’s major water sources, remains dangerously low at just 15 percent capacity.

League discusses respectful discussion

Respectful public dialogue will be the topic of conversation at the upcoming League of Women Voters’ Forum scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 15 at noon in The Faulkner Gallery at the Santa Barbara Public Library, 40 E. Anapamu Street. Addressing the question “Can We Talk…and Listen to one Another?” will be speakers Janet Wolf of the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, and Lanny Ebenstein, political scientist, author and educator. The two represent opposite sides of the political spectrum. The event will also include a presentation by representatives of the League of Women Voters of San Luis obispo about its nationally acclaimed study and report on best practices in promoting civil discourse on public policy issues. The event is free, and attendees are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch.

A crowd of more than 75 people packed the Carpinteria Library Multipurpose room on the night of Feb. 6 to launch Indivisible Carpinteria, a local chapter a nationwide political movement that has been gaining prominence across the nation and California.

Local group founders Leslie Westbrook, Gaby Edwards and Catherine overman recently met over tacos and planned the meeting —less than a week before the gathering.

“I created an Indivisible Carpinteria Facebook page right after I learned about the movement,” said Westbrook, “I was in communication with a few people over email who discovered us online. I attended the first event put on by the Santa Barbara Indivisible group to learn more. I listened in on national calls to action and met with other group leaders in our region. It wasn’t until I heard from and met with Gaby and Catherine, who had all kinds of energy and knowledge, that the effort sprang to life—like magic!”

A brief review of the organization’s

founding and its basic tenants to resist President donald Trump, contact local representatives and promote progressive values in a polite way were presented. The group discussed different areas of concern with the new administration’s agenda – ranging from senate confirmations to healthcare— then took a vote and agreed to begin their own action agenda with helping make Carpinteria a safe haven for our immigrant community.

“It’s a grassroots, self-directed movement that follows a working model.

We have a lot of work to do – and it’s an uphill battle, but with like minded folks, we can shine a light hopefully and be a beacon to our community,” said Westbrook.

Sarah Maiani, a daughter of former Vice President Al Gore, attended the meeting and will be speaking at a future gathering on how to best communicate with the opposition. Mid-year budget review comes to Council

A midyear review of the 2016-2017 City of Carpinteria budget will take place at the next regular meeting of the City Council on Monday, Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at city hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. Also on the agenda are the following: Service Cost Update Report by Revenue & Costs Specialist and Adoption of Master Fee Schedule, and Appointments to Boards Commissions and Committees. SBCC President to speak at Rotary meeting

“Silence”

Twenty-six years. That’s how long Martin Scorsese was working on “Silence” before it came out this year.

Who knows what took him so long, or why, exactly, he felt compelled to make it. After all, Scorsese is known for mafia movies, not religious dramas set in 17th-century Japan (which is what “Silence” is).

Maybe Scorsese was looking for the right angle—a certain perspective on this gripping story of two Jesuit missionaries to Japan. Or maybe he was conflicted about which themes to draw out, which emotions to evoke, or which message to communicate. There is something deeply personal in this movie, and something deeply pious—it’s hard to compare it (or anything) to Dostoevsky’s “The Brother Karamazov” or Donne’s “Sonnet 14,” but it clearly tries to do something along those lines, as in the tradition of Bergman’s “Winter Light” or Tarkovsky’s “Andrei Rublev.”

The story is, after all, ripe for it. Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Garupe (Adam Driver) are Jesuit missionaries to Japan. Their long-term goal is to bring Christianity to Japan. Or, rather, it is to bring it back to Japan. Not long before they arrived in 1639, there were hundreds of thousands of Christians. But a Japanese inquisition brought a brutal crackdown.

Thousands and thousands of priests and laity were tortured and killed—beheaded, scalded with boiling water, hung upside down, drowned, burned alive, etc.

But that didn’t stop the Christians. They went underground. They worshiped in secret. Jesuit missionaries continued to sneak in.

That’s not exactly why Rodrigues and Garupe come to Japan, however.

Their mission is rather to find a priest, Ferreira (Liam Neeson), who was the most devout among them, but who was reported to have renounced his faith under pressure. In a way, this is the first of many tests of their faith.

Could it really be that Ferreira buckled?

Is even the strongest among them too weak to withstand temptation? They had to know.

And yet when Rodrigues and Garupe arrive in Japan, they are immediately met with an overwhelming thirst for leadership among the Christian faithful. These people need their guidance. So they stick around.

And then their second test. The inquisitor, Inoue (Issei Ogata), comes to town and, suspecting that there are Christians among them, brutally tortures and kills three men, just to make a point. Rodrigues and Garupe watch from afar, asking themselves if they can bear it—or whether it’s worth it—to watch innocent lives destroyed for the sake of proclaiming their faith.

Inoue sees Christianity as a nuisance, and Christians as troublemakers. He compares Christianity to a barren woman who relentlessly loves someone, but who is unfit to be a wife. Thus he tries every awful trick in the book to

get Christians to recant, and to stamp out Christianity. Rodrigues and Garupe are tested again and again, right to their breaking points.

Rodrigues, in particular, is at a loss for what to do. He cannot hear God. He does not know what God would have him do. Rodrigues is willing to sacrifice himself. But others? What’s the point of causing all this grief just to refuse to comply with the inquisitor’s wishes?

I’m not quite sure Scorsese ever found it—that angle, that perspective, that theme, that emotion, that message he was looking for. It’s not that this movie lacks vision, or fails to pack an emotional punch. Not at all. It is compelling, heart wrenching, challenging, tragic, thought provoking—all of that.

I just can’t shake the feeling that something’s missing.

In Andrei Tarkovsky’s masterpiece, “Andrei Rublev,” one scene of profound religiosity, in which the iconographer Rublev cradles a young man whose darkest hour has just come, Rublev is himself the image of God. Without any special effects or explicit nods to the camera, we see that Rublev is like those he paints—icons through

whom God has broken his silence, revealed himself and given comfort to those who seek it. It’s a sublime “aha” moment.

There’s nothing quite like that in “Silence.” There is plenty to struggle with in the movie, and in many ways it’s an admirable meditation on the demands of faith. But there is no epiphany. The main characters are generally sympathetic, and there is a vague sense that their steadfastness is somehow worthwhile, but there is no “This Is It” moment where we really get the point—the point of what Rodrigues and Garupe are up to, the point of retelling their story, and indeed, the point of the movie. The “why” of it remains unanswered and unaddressed, as if, even after three decades, the movie wasn’t yet ready to be made.

“Silence” is, in many ways, a very fine movie. It is well written, directed, acted, shot, composed, and so on. But, like me, you may leave feeling cold, and in the dark.

“Silence” is rated R for some disturbing violent content.

At least he remembered his reusable bag

On Jan. 27 at approximately 3:45 p.m. two deputies were dispatched to a supermarket on Casitas Pass Road on a report of a 19-year-old man accused of attempting to steal liquor. The man was reportedly wearing a green jacket, black running shorts, black socks and shoes and last seen running northbound on Casitas Pass Road past a pancake restaurant. A deputy then saw a man matching the given description walking on Via Real, west of Casitas Pass Road. The man attempted to walk away from the deputy approaching, then told him to let him go when the deputy took him by the arm into an “escort hold.” After struggling briefly, the man sat on the curb as directed.

An employee at the supermarket told another responding deputy that the man was a former employee who had quit his job the previous year before he could be fired for stealing liquor. The employee signed a citizen’s arrest form as she had seen the man attempt to leave the store with two 750-mililiter bottles of tequila in a reusable shopping bag. She had stopped the man at the door and asked him if he was going to steal from the store again as she took the bag he was holding with the tequila. The employee told the man that he was not allow back in the store after quitting his job, and that he should wait at the door as the police were en route. He then said he was leaving and ran through the doors.

In addition to the theft of liquor the year before that ended his employment at the store, the man was seen last November on video surveillance stealing four bottles of liquor. The employee told deputies that the store did not report the crime but called the man’s mother and asked her to tell him not to return. When the woman signed the citizen’s arrest form, the deputy who had detained the man on Via Real arrested him for attempted shoplifting and transported him to Santa Barbara County Jail.

On Jan. 28 at approximately 7:50 p.m. a deputy responded to a crash near the intersection of Via Real and Rincon Road.

A silver van was missing a wheel after

colliding with a guardrail. A passenger in the van was injured, and after medical personnel released the driver, the deputy approached him. Upon smelling a strong odor of alcohol coming from the man, the deputy administered a field sobriety test.

Having difficulty walking a straight line and balancing on one foot, the man reportedly said “this is not happening,” and declined to continue the test. The deputy asked the man to provide a breath sample and a CHP officer administered the test with a “Alco Sensor IV” Breathalyzer unit. The man was found to have a blood alcohol level above the legal limit and was arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Under the bridge

On Jan. 29 at approximately 9:30 p.m. a deputy was conducting “an area check” on the bike path that connects Carpinteria Avenue and Via Real. While looking under the Carpinteria Avenue overpass, the deputy saw a man laying on a blanket. The man sat up and spoke with the deputy as the deputy reported “scanning the area for weapons and drugs.” The deputy asked the man if he had any drugs or weapons on his person, and the man said no. The man then allowed the deputy to search him and his belongings. When the man stood up, the deputy found small baggies of suspected methamphetamine in the man’s front pocket and sock. The deputy also found a glass pipe with burnt residue and arrested the man for possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. After transporting the man to Santa Barbara County Jail, the deputy tested the substances he’d found and they came back “presumptive positive” for methamphetamine.

Carpinteria Unified School District could qualify for a federal program that would make lunches free for all students in the district. The district’s Child Nutrition and Wellness Coordinator Laurel Schwartz and other district staff are researching a fee waiver eligible to school districts where approximately 70 percent of students qualify for free or reduced-cost lunches. “We want to make sure that (applying for free school lunches) is the right thing for our district,� Schwartz said, expressing a mix of interest and uncertainty due to the complexity of determining the district’s eligibility. “There are a lot of factors,� she explained, “and we have to make sure it’s the best fit.�

November 8, 2016 was an eventful night across the country.

This is true for both our State and the city of Carpinteria.

Of significance, Proposition 58 was strongly supported by the voters and becomes effective on July 1, 2017. It focuses upon increasing the development of

Dual Language Instructionâ&#x20AC;Śversusâ&#x20AC;Ś Dual Language Immersion (DLI) language acquisition programs in K-12 public school districts; CUSD included.

More specifically, Proposition 58 increases the obligation of Californiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s school districts to include a broader range of stakeholder groups (i.e. employees, parents, community members, etc.) in the development of language acquisition programs. It requires that parent-preferences be considered, â&#x20AC;&#x153;to the extent possibleâ&#x20AC;? [as per Section 5:310.a] , when determining the most appropriate language instruction programs offered.

Since November, 2016, CUSDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s employees and their elected colleague leaders had expected a robust conversation about the wide-variety of language acquisition options and pathways available to the CUSD as it works to meet both the legal provisions and the spirit the of the proposition. Unfortunately, the CUSD School Board has neither prompted this conversation, nor has it developed a master list of the variety of program options and their risks, benefits, and costs.

Instead, the School Board has sought to explore a single program option, Dual Language Immersion (DLI).

Although Dual Language Immersion (DLI) is just one of many language acquisition methods available to the CUSD, it also has the potential of being one of the most disruptive versions of language instruction available; especially when examining the impact upon District finances, student composition in each class and at each school-site, human-resources/personnel, and CUSDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to meet the broader obligations as established in Proposition 58.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s with this in mind that union leadership once again strongly encourages the CUSD School Board to begin a more inclusive and comprehensive dialogue associated with the obligations and opportunities related to Proposition 58. In the meantime, it is important to share the following details with the community of Carpinteria: w Proposition 58 mandates that districts consider and develop opportunities for â&#x20AC;&#x153;Non-English Language Instructionâ&#x20AC;? (i.e. Dual Language Instruction). w When determining the most appropriate language instruction programs to offer, Proposition 58 requires that parent-preferences be considered in

combination with the greater communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs, â&#x20AC;&#x153;to the extent possibleâ&#x20AC;? [as per Section 5:310.a].

has there been any comprehensive consideration given to what is and / or is not the best combination of program options to utilize in our small district.

On behalf of the employees, CUSD families, and the educational model we represent, we express our excitement and expectation to collaborate with the School Board during this uniquely transitional period. While we hope this advisory serves to notify the community of the options and opportunities that exist, we encourage District parents to both demand and take part in transparent and comprehensive discussions about the implementation of Proposition 58. I grew up in Carpinteria. My parents are Chuck Kelsey and Suzy Kelsey. They met at Carpinteria High School. I attended Canalino Elementary, Carpinteria Middle School and Carpinteria High School. I am married to Wally Burquez, who just retired from the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire District after 38 years. We have two children, Alec, 19, and Daniel, 17. I am a tax accountant and work very hard during tax season, which is mostly the first three months of the year.

When did you start hiking the Franklin Trail?

I started as soon as the trail opened.

I have always been physically active. I ran track in high school and just never stopped exercising. I usually hike with MaryAnn Colson, Jeanne Kelsey and Cathy Wells. I call them my posse. It’s our girl friend time and after the hike we pretty much always go to Jack’s Bagels—calories off, calories on, yet it is always fun to be with good friends. The

Candi Burquez hopes to be back on the Franklin Trail regulars list soon. trail has been my primary workout for the past four years. Mostly we go to the gate, sometimes to the three-mile marker or the second bench and occasionally to the end of the second phase. If I’m by myself, I only go to the gate. I’m afraid of bears. I have never seen one, but I did see fresh bear tracks once between the first bench and the gate. I’m even afraid of dogs. When I do hike alone, I always sing the song from “The Jungle Book,” “The Bare Necessities.”

Do you still hike the trail?

Well, last Aug. 4, I was coming down the trail rather fast, I tripped and dislocated my kneecap. It really hurt. Since my husband was a fireman, I just didn’t want to have the whole fire department come rescue me, so I limped slowly down the trail. I knew I was in trouble when I got home, rested for a while then found I couldn’t stand up at all. For three months I went to physical therapy, yet in November I had patella realignment surgery since it clearly wasn’t healing.

I have worked very hard to gain back the full use of my knee. I’m the patient they are trying to keep down. My doctor tells me to listen to my body. It took a while, yet now I walk 6 miles every day.

Exercise is my sanity, my stress reliever, so I really need to do something every day. Last Monday I hiked up the trail for the first time since I injured my knee. I went slowly, used hiking poles to take strain off my knee. It was not hard at all on the way up, yet I experienced pain on the way down on the steep parts. Now I know I need to keep walking to continue to strengthen the muscles around my knee. For now I will just hike the trail once a week. However, I really look forward to the time when I can hike to the end of the third phase with my posse.

Has the trail changed you?

The trail has changed the way I exercise. When I can hike, I can eat whatever I want. It is the best workout you can find, and it is free. I’m really missing it right now. It will kick your butt every time you go up the mountain. You might get faster,

but I don’t think it ever gets easier. I love that it is in our own backyard. It is well maintained, easy to follow and the mile markers tell you where you are. I love the landmarks on the trail that help to give me a sense of where I am: the tree arch on the trail as you near the top, the first bench, the gate, the sycamore tree with the bear claw marks, the big swing that was built by the trail stewards, the three mile marker and the second bench. They are all familiar signs to me.

The trail has changed my body. I just naturally slim down when I hike. My pants fit better, yet I never feel like I’m dieting. My friends all look amazing. It is the best workout in Carpinteria.

Do you have a favorite place on the trail?

Anytime I can go beyond the gate to the second bench and beyond with my friends, I am very happy. It is very different beyond the benches. I never get bored on the trail as it is different every time I hike. I love how it is always well maintained. There are always people to look out for you and talk to while you hike. Everyone supports each other as they hike. Everyone asks how you are.

In town, no one says hi to me like they do on the trail. Everyone is always so encouraging. I see the same people all the time. It is so nice to see the diversity of people hiking the trail, small children to people much older than me.

What do you carry with you on the trail?

I have a small waist pack with my phone and a small first aid kit, and I carry a big bottle of water. On the way down from the gate, I always leave water in the dog bowl. Even though I’m a bit afraid of dogs, I put the bowl at the gate so that the dogs have plenty of water on the trail.

Anything else you would like to say?

Just again how much I miss hiking on the Franklin Trail every day and I can’t wait to be with my friends up on the mountain.

These homemade truffles are easy to make, and operate just like Love Potion #9. They are rich and delicious and known to unleash powerful emotions. Use at your own risk.

INGREDIENTS

1 8-ounce package cream cheese 3 cups semisweet chocolate chips, melted 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract

In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating after each addition. Stir in melted chocolate and vanilla until no streaks remain. Refrigerate for about an hour. Roll into balls and dredge them in any coating you like: coconut, cocoa, ground nuts, powdered sugar, sprinkles, etc. You can also flavor your truffles by omitting the vanilla and adding flavored liqueurs instead. (cut out petals at right to make your flower)

Scissors, glue and paper (use petals at right) are necessary. Floral tape and stem wire are optional, and substitutes can be found around the house or made by rolling up paper.

Cut out a petal and crumple. This makes the paper more pliable. Now roll it to be the center of your flower.

Add a small dab of glue to the rolled base to keep it in place.

Add more petals. They can be tightly rolled or open wide—however you’d like your flower to look.

Glue the paper bloom to wire or whatever else you’re using for a stem.

2017 Rincon Classic runs with good surf under gray skies

In a winter characterized by back-to-back rainstorms, picking the right weekend to run the venerable Rincon Classic surf contest was even more challenging than usual for event director Chris Keet of Surf Happens.

“With only four more weeks in the waiting period and a long-range forecast for more rain and not much surf,” Keet explained last Friday on the eve of the competition, “we had to call it ‘on’ for the swell this weekend (Feb. 4 and 5).”

Running 19 years in its present configuration, the Classic has enjoyed superb conditions for the past four years with big, clean surf, dolphins in the line up and sparkling days of sun. This year, however, a slow-clearing front kept skies moody and dark for most of the day Saturday, the waves coming in like slate-gray walls of water as the contest kicked off at 6:45 a.m. The surf was forecast to drop somewhat on Sunday, so Saturday’s competition was given over to running the Mens, Masters, Legends, Grand Masters and Pro divisions. Kilian Garland took first place for his sixth Rincon Classic win, and Catherine Clark won the Women’s division on Sunday.

A number of remarkable rides, hundreds of yards in length, with multiple, high-speed turns put Garland in a class of his own during the final.

But one of Dane Reynolds’ waves in an earlier heat provided spectators yet another example of his otherworldly ability: driving straight down the face of a smooth six-footer, Reynolds swooped back up in a continuously arcing turn until the fins of his surfboard broke free, causing him to slide backwards as he re-gathered his balance and let his board come around in avalanching foam. And that’s what keeps the fans coming down to watch the Classic year after year.

Wall of Honor to celebrate Boys & Girls Club 50th

The Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and in commemoration of its rich history the club is curating a prominently exhibited Wall of Honor and History. Director Debra Herrick hopes that the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club Wall of Honor and History, “will spotlight former director Rich Medel’s 40-year legacy and beyond of ‘today’s boys [and girls], tomorrow’s leaders’” by “displaying 50 years of the club through cherished portraits of our community members engaged in athletics, games, art, service, and play.”

The club is making significant upgrades to its facility, many of which are related to the wear and tear of the original construction. Broken and or structurally unstable fixtures have been repaired, such as the outdoor trellises and water fountains, and some pieces, such as the built-in glass trophy case, were considered beyond repair.

The trophy case was evaluated by a general contractor and recommended for removal.

Trophies and plaques with the engraved names of athletic league champions have been preserved and will soon be presented on the new Wall of Honor and History at the central back wall of the club (where the trophy case stood) that leads into the gym. other recent upgrades to the club include the remodel of the learning Center in August, the remodel of the Teen Tech Center in october, the repainting of the gym in November, the current repainting of the games room and the upcoming remodel of the Arts & Crafts room funded by the Carpinteria lions Club.

living the green life erin maker This winter has been excellent for drought-stricken California. Heavy storms in most of the state have contributed to full reservoirs and higherthan-average snowpack for much of the state. Some of that rain has made its way to Santa Barbara County, but without enough accumulation to bring us out of the drought. Because of the dry winters the last few years, people have become a lot more aware of water supply and conservation, which is incredibly important and something we should continue even during wet years.

For myself and other water quality specialists, rain means work. We monitor construction activities before and during storm events to make sure that project managers are addressing potential runoff from construction sites, especially along creek corridors. We also do urban runoff sampling during certain storm events to identify what exactly is in the water flowing into our local water bodies in order to improve water quality.

Water quality monitoring can take many forms. Here in Carpinteria, we do a lot of visual monitoring, which means walking around before and during storms to see if we spot trash that needs to be cleaned up, any runoff that looks suspect, or if things like stockpiles of sand are properly covered. Visual monitoring also takes place during dry weather when it is easy to spot things like broken sprinklers, over-irrigation or washing activities that may be a violation of water quality regulations. We also conduct creek and beach cleanups, which are a form of water quality monitoring and improvement, where we collect data on the types of trash collected and note any runoff that looks suspicious so that we can track the source and determine follow-up actions.

The urban runoff sampling that I do in partnership with other local agencies

is also called 303(d) monitoring, which refers to state waterbody designations for different types of impairments that are tested with an indicator bacteria for fecal coliform or nutrients typically associated with agricultural operations. Not all impairments are human caused—a creek listed for impairment due to fecal coliform, for example, could be listed because of birds’ droppings or those of other wildlife. Further sampling and DNA marker tests can reveal various contaminates.

The 303(d) monitoring that I do in partnership with the cities of Goleta, Buellton and Solvang, as well as the County of Santa Barbara, is to look for specific things, or “constituents” during storm events from specific land use types.

We need at least a two- hour storm with enough rainfall to generate sufficient runoff to make a sample. In some locations we are collecting water before it enters the storm drain, and in others we are taking the sample at the outfall before it enters the local water body. We take “grab samples” and follow scientific protocol to create an accurate representation of urban water quality. This information can then be used to better inform education and water quality projects, as well as to track sources of polluted water.

Although program sampling is done by agency staff, volunteers are the most important element of successful water quality programs. Without the interest of the community and willing volunteers, many potentially polluting discharges often go unnoticed and trash from our creeks ends up in the ocean, where it is much harder to clean up. I feel very fortunate to run a program here in Carpinteria where people are conscious of water quality and involved in helping improve the local environment. It is what keeps Carpinteria looking beautiful.

BY ALONZO OROZCO The Santa Barbara Track Club (SBTC) and its youth program are doing what they can to make sure kids in Carpinteria discover the full variety of events in track and field. “It’s fun to show (the kids) that track was more than just running around,” said Sarah Organista, the former SBTC Professional Athlete who coaches the Youth Club.

The SBTC was formed in the winter/ spring season of 2012-13 to assist elite post-collegiate athletes who are pursuing professional careers in track and field. The female athletes compete in the five-event heptathlon, and the men in 10-event decathlon events. The competitions include high jump, shot put and javelin, along with various running challenges which include sprints and long distances.

Although less than five years old, the club has already experienced its share of success, with one of its members, Barbara Nwaba, recently participating in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.

“Another mission of the club is to inspire the youth of the community to take an interest in track and field, and have a program to help kids develop athletically,” said Organista, who also coaches the high jump for Carpinteria High School and recently married Matt Organista, CHS boys water polo coach.

The youth club started with 17 kids, and has experienced phenomenal growth.

Fifty-eight kids participated in the Westmont-based club last season, and another eight joined the Carpinteria club. A total of 350 families have been part of the youth program since its inception.

The program is for kids ages 7 to 14, and takes place at CHS on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 5 to 6:20 p.m. Youths can join anytime during the season, which begins this Monday, Feb. 13 and runs through May 4.

February 1 – The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team beat Grace Brethren by a score of 3-1. Four minutes into the game, Vincent gonzalez powered a shot into goal off a pass from edgar mendoza for a quick 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Grace Brethren evened the score, 1-1. In the 14th minute, Diego Perez booted a corner kick into the area, and alex ramirez put it into the back of the net on a header. Off a corner taken by Perez in minute 37, maclain Clayton flicked the ball to Jovanny avila on the second post, who also put a header on the ball for his first goal of the season, which preserved the lead for the Warriors. “brian garcia had six saves with another clutch performance at the keeper position,” said Carpinteria coach Leo Quintero.

“Kendra also finished with an assist and was very unselfish today as she really tried setting up certain players even when she had strong chances herself,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant. Carpinteria is now 12-4 overall and 10-0 in the Frontier League.

February 1 – The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team lost 46-40 in a Tri-Valley League game at Santa Clara. The first period ended with the Saints taking a 9-8 lead. By the end of the first half, Santa Clara had built its lead to seven, largely due to free throws. The Warriors scored the first six points in the half to cut the deficit to one. The Saints made six free throws toward the end of the game to preserve the victory. “We had several scoring opportunities, but weren’t able to put the ball in the hoop,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales.

February 7 – The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team beat Thacher in a Frontier League game played at St. Bonaventure High School, 7-0. “We lost one of our center midfielders, Dayne wagner, very early in the game due to a shoulder injury,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. As of press time, the extent of the injury is not known. “… We are keeping positive thoughts and hopes, although it does not look too good,” added Bryant. Two Carpinteria players, ava gropper and elizabeth estrada, collected hat tricks (three goals). The Senior Day match was scheduled to take place at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium, but the game was moved to the Ventura venue. alejandra alvarez scored the second goal of the game with a left-footed shot from about 25 yards to account for the other Warriors goal. The team improved to 13-4 overall and 11-0 in league.

Carpinteria outscored in the third quarter 188, headed into the fourth with the score at 43-28. “That’s where our defense stepped up and made things happen, we went on a 17-2 run led by senior (Reed) to tie the game at 45-45 with under two minutes to play,” said Warriors coach Amy Bryant. A three-pointer by Santa Clara put them up 52-49, Carpinteria was unable to get a shot off toward the end, and the visitors tacked on three more points for the 55-49 final.

“To quote John Wooden: ‘You can lose when you outscore somebody in a game, and you can win when you’re outscored’,” concluded Bryant of the team’s performance.

February 3 – The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team fell to Tri-Valley League-leading Malibu by a score of 12-5 in the final home contest of the year. “A series of successful Malibu fast breaks put the game out of reach in the third,” said Carpinteria coach Lance Hoffman. “Co-captain goalie nicole Poulos had a remarkable game, recording a staggering 22 blocks against the Division V power house Sharks.” Fellow co-captain alisa lemere made five steals to lead the Warriors, as well as scoring twice. Marko Pliso led all scorers with 27 points and 12 rebounds, and Mason Mackall finished with a game high 20 rebounds and nine points. Andy McHarg scored a season high 12 points. “got a great boost off the bench from senior Bryce Huerta knocking down three threes in the fourth quarter to help secure the win against a fierce Villanova team that battled the entire game,” said Rams coach Andy Gil. “I credit Villanova, they fight hard and compete and are well-coached,” he added.

February 1 - The Cate School boys soccer team lost 3-1 to Fillmore High School, the Tri-Valley league’s top team. Fillmore opened the scoring in the 13th minute and padded their lead to 2-0 in the 38th minute. Cate scored in the 47th minute when Harry Corman sent a cross on a corner kick that captain Christian Herman headed into the far-right corner of the net to make it a 2-1 game. “From there, the Rams continued to press, and narrowly missed several superb scoring opportunities, controlling the bulk of the play and winning the midfield,” said Cate coach Pete Mack. Fillmore scored in the final minutes of play to put the game out of reach. The loss drops the Rams to 3-7-1 on the season and 1-6 in league play.

February 3 - The Cate School boys soccer team lost Friday afternoon at home to Santa Paula by a score of 4-3. The Rams got out to the lead when, in the sixth minute, Captain Christian Herman took a pass from Buba Fofanah and finished it to the far post. Following a foul in the box, Santa Paula evened the score in the 21st minute on a penalty kick. Six minutes later, Cate’s Charlie Morris booted a free kick onto Fofanah’s head, who nodded it just inside the post to give the Rams a 2-1 lead into the half. After yielding another penalty kick just four minutes into the second frame, Cate’s Harry Corman got fouled in the Santa Paula box, and Herman converted the penalty kick to put the Rams back on top. Santa Paula responded again two minutes later on a free kick outside the box, and then again two minutes after that for the eventual winner.

February 6 – The Cate School boys soccer team played a Monday afternoon match at grace Brethren and walked away with a 2-1 Tri-Valley league victory. grace Brethren scored in the 16th minute of play but the rest of the team’s shots on goal were turned away by Ram keeper Cullen Barber, who had 13 saves in the game. Down 1-0, Captain Christian Herman scored just three minutes into the second half with a shot inside the near post from about 25 yards. Four minutes later, Herman went 50 yards with the ball on the left wing and placed a shot over the grace Brethren keeper who came off his line. “Of special note, besides Barber and Herman, brilliant performances were turned in by Caden Cutter at right back and Chris Figueroa at left back,” said Cate coach Pete Mack of the game, which puts his squad at 2-8-1 overall and 2-7 in league.

Elle Smith scored 18 points, playing primarily only the first half. Sarah Polowczak finished the game with 10 points, and Amber Thiery followed with seven and distributed double digit assists. Maya Blattberg also had seven points, and Kaliyah Dorsey scored six. Piper Brooks scored four, while Georgia Douglas pulled down multiple rebounds and scored three. “Morgan Prinz had a great take to the basket for two,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta of one of many highlights in the Rams win.

February 4 - The Cate School girls basketball team fell 37-25 to rival Thacher. Amber Thiery scored 12 points (10 of which were in the second half). Elle Smith scored six and Morgan Prinz finished with five. Sarah Polowczak and Maya Blattberg each hit a free throw. “Though the Rams may have been the more athletic team, the Toads were the more aggressive team,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta. “The Rams did pull it together a bit more in the second half,” added Venditta.

February 6 – The Cate School girls basketball team suffered a 55-51 loss to nordhoff on Monday evening. Elle Smith with rebounds and put-backs, scored 12 points. Maya Blattberg scored 10; Piper Brooks had eight; Morgan Prinz and Georgia Douglas each had six; Sarah Polowczak knocked in five; and Amber Thiery contributed four.

The Rams had over 10 turnovers in the first half, and two points in the first quarter to the Rangers’ 11. “The Rams came back in the second half with a renewed sense of purpose,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta. “In the end, Cate played hard and was very close to pulling out the win.”

February 7 – The Cate School girls basketball team came away with a 57-30 victory against Malibu on Tuesday evening in the Cate School gym. Amber Thiery scored a season high 19 points. Georgia Douglas scored 12, and pulled down over a half dozen rebounds. Morgan Prinz and Sarah Polowczak pitched in two each. with one minute to go, senior co-captains Amber Thiery and Morgan Prinz jogged off their home court for the last time, as this was the Rams’ last home game of the season. “Elle Smith and Piper Brooks both had great games as well,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta as the Rams travel to nordhoff for their last in-season game tonight.

The Carpinteria harbor seal rookery is located immediately east of Casitas Pier, between the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and Carpinteria State Beach. Please remember not to bring dogs, bicycles or loud voices to view the seals. Harbor seals, when disturbed, may flee and become separated from their pups. Big-hearted bands took the Plaza Playhouse Theater stage last weekend to raise funds for 3-year-old Forrest Holt’s fight to survive a life-threatening blood disorder. South on Linden, the Youngsters, the Traveling Hurtados and Rick Reeves all rocked the house while little Holt watched on. The boy’s battle began at birth, and earlier fundraisers helped his family stay afloat during a recent stay at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Holt’s vascular malformation has now led to kidney failure, and the family needs additional support for his battles to come. Work continues on Linden Casitas Overpass Project The nuts and bolts of pile testing

Two giant cranes and other massive construction equipment at the Linden Avenue onramp were put to work pile driving over the last couple weeks in an operation that will continue through midFebruary. As of Feb. 2, Caltrans reported that four of the five test piles had been driven. Testing will commence after the piles are driven, and results will dictate the dimensions of the support system for the replacement bridge.

Four of the piles being tested are 48-inches in diameter, three of which are 71 feet long, and one is 78 feet long. The fifth test pile has a 78-inch diameter and is 104 feet long. Piles are driven down with a diesel-powered impact hammer that weighs about 22,000 pounds. A vibratory hammer is used in the initial stage of each pile installation, and the impact hammer then drives the full length of the pile into the ground. After the last of the test piles have been driven in, hydraulic testing equipment will be setup. Dynamic tests will verify that the piles are sufficient for the strength of the soil at the site of the future Linden Avenue overcrossing.

One of the tests will involve removing all the soil within the 78-inch pile’s steel shell to about 10 feet from the bottom. Full-length rebar cages will then be placed inside and cast in concrete. About 100 cubic yards of concrete will be used— enough to fill around 10 concrete trucks.

The northbound Highway 101 onramp at Linden Avenue will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. weekdays as needed for equipment delivery and setup.

Linden Avenue and Ogan Road will be re-striped with lanes shifted to prepare for new bridge construction over the

freeway. Re-striping will occur at night with one-way traffic control and flagmen on Feb. 7 through 9, between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Casitas Pass Road work

One of the four 71-foot-long test piles is driven into the ground with a dieselpowered impact hammer.

The southbound Highway 101 onramp at Casitas Pass Road will close as needed weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. to work on the freeway shoulder to prepare for upcoming lane shifts.

Casitas Pass Road will be re-striped with lanes shifted to prepare for new bridge construction over the freeway. Restriping will occur at night with one-way traffic control and flagmen from Feb. 7 to 9, between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Crews will pave the old median area on Casitas Pass Road near the ARCO station during the week as weather allows.

Flagmen will direct traffic during work, and one lane will remain open in each direction on Casitas Pass Road.

Later this month, crews will begin demolition of the overcrossing barrier to prepare for new bridge construction.

Highway 101 preparation

Crews will re-stripe lanes and shift the concrete safety barrier on Highway 101 at night throughout the week. There will be alternating north and southbound Highway 101 lane and ramp closures as needed from south of Carpinteria Creek to north of Linden Avenue, beginning at 8 p.m. Northbound Highway 101 lanes and ramps will reopen by 5 a.m., and southbound Highway 101 lanes and ramps will reopen by 7 a.m.
