About a year after the untimely death of Bill “The Hotdog Man” Connell, 50-plus people gathered at the former site of his Surf Dog cart to unveil a memorial plaque lauding Connell’s contributions to veterans and his beloved customers. Connell, always generous with his opinions and his hotdogs, spent over 20 years holding court at the intersection of Bailard and Carpinteria avenues. During many of those years, he also traveled regularly to Sacramento to, as he put it, “rattle the cages” of lawmakers in a successful effort to exempt military veteran peddlers from sales tax.

Boys & Girls Club launches roof-raising campaign

The storm that pummeled Carpinteria on Feb. 17 exposed the Boys & Girls Club roof for what it is—a 40-year-old structure in need of replacement. Children were sent home that day as water leaked through the ceiling into the facility, resulting in about 4 inches of flooding in the club’s arts and crafts room. Though the youth organization was back up and running a few days later and will perform necessary repairs to keep children safe for the remainder of the rainy season, it is asking the public to donate toward the $150,000 cost of a new roof. Michael Baker, CEO of United Boys & Girls Clubs, said that a roof replacement was already on the club’s to-do list, but “this wind and rain sped up the need quite quickly.”

Baker said that staff members worked tirelessly to mop up as much standing water as possible during the storm. They isolated the arts and crafts room with sandbags in order to keep flooding from affecting the club’s newly outfitted technology room. Damages to the roof will not be covered by the club’s insurance. The club has launched a campaign through gofundme.com, but Baker suggests that anyone interested in contributing write a check directly to the club to avoid website fees of 3 percent. Checks can be made out to United Boys & Girls Clubs with “Carpinteria Roof” on the notes line.

Arts Center receives $25K grant

With just under a $1 million to go in its $3.1 million capital campaign, the Carpinteria Arts Center announced last week that Santa Barbara Foundation had pledged $25,000 toward the purchase and re-purposing of the former Cajun Kitchen property and an endowment. In total, the foundation awarded six Capital Excellence Awards amounting to $750,000 to Santa Barbara area nonprofits. If the Arts Center can raise the full $3.1 million by the end of the year, the nonprofit will save about $225,000 in financing costs from the 2015 loan to purchase the Cajun Kitchen building. “Further, and most importantly, once we’ve concluded the capital campaign we can focus on the exciting operations, workshops, classes, concerts, youth programs, tours, films, dance and so much more,” stated Arts Center Co-chair David Powdrell.

Barricaded suspect arrested with K-9 unit

A local man who allegedly attacked an elderly person in a Franciscan Court home on Feb. 26, was apprehended by a Sheriff’s K-9 team after barricading himself inside the garage. The incident began early that morning when deputies responded to a report of a domestic dispute in the 1200 block of Franciscan Court. Deputies contacted 41-year-old Lionel Torres of Carpinteria. He was compliant and deputies advised him not to return to the residence.

Deputies were called back to the residence around 1 p.m. on reports that Torres was forcing his way inside and battering an elderly resident in the home. When deputies arrived, the suspect fled into a de-attached garage and barricaded himself inside, refusing to cooperate or communicate with deputies. He was also believed to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol and in close proximity to antique swords.

Neighbors were evacuated and a K-9 team arrived to assist. Deputies gained access to the garage, which had been fortified from the interior. Torres violently resisted arrest and the K-9 was deployed. The K-9 apprehended Torres leaving minor injuries. He was later treated and booked on charges of battery, elder abuse, false imprisonment, resisting arrest with injury, trespassing and battery on a peace officer with bail set at $50,000. Two deputies suffered minor injuries in the scuffle.

Dogs sniff out suspects hiding on Padaro

Police canines discovered two wanted suspects hiding underneath a house on Padaro Lane on the night of Feb. 22, following an extensive search and pursuit. The suspects, 23-year-old Erica Rogers of North San Diego County and 30-year-old Jacob San Nicholas of Santa Barbara, were arrested and are in custody at the Santa Barbara County Jail. Both had warrants out for their arrest.

Around 5:30 p.m. the Santa Barbara Police Department issued a “be on the lookout” for a white 2012 Mazda sedan that was recklessly evading law enforcement in the 400 block of Santa Barbara Street. The vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed, running stoplights and failing to yield.

A Sheriff’s deputy spotted the vehicle a short time later heading southbound on Highway 101 near the San Ysidro off-ramp. Due to traffic and public safety concerns, deputies opted against a high-speed pursuit and lost sight of the Mazda when it exited in Summerland. California Highway Patrol officers responded to assist with the search.

At around 6:15 p.m. a resident in the 3200 block of Padaro Lane called 911 to report an abandoned vehicle in her driveway. CHP officers responded to the residence and confirmed it was the suspect’s vehicle, which had also been involved in a collision with another vehicle in Summerland.

Sheriff’s deputies responded and brought two K-9 teams. After several hours of searching, a K-9 team located the suspects hiding underneath a house in the crawlspace in the 3000 block of Padaro Lane. They were pulled out of the crawl space at gunpoint and arrested.

Rogers was booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of possession of narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia as well as several felony warrants. She is being held on $170,000 bail. San Nicholas was booked on charges of felony evading, the sale of methamphetamine, sale and transportation of a controlled substance and possession for sale of a controlled substance as well as a violation of probation. He is being held without bail.

Jacob San Nicholas of Santa Barbara was arrested for evading officers, drug charges and violation of probation.

Erica Rogers of North San Diego County was booked on drug charges and several felony warrants.

County counseling program pulled

Free walk-in counseling at the Veteran’s Hall came to an abrupt halt last week when the County of Santa Barbara announced that recent staffing issues and the underutilization of services had resulted in the immediate end to the twice-monthly program. The Carpinteria Behavioral Health Walk-In Program was initiated in June of 2015. The county emphasized that even without the walk-in program, over a dozen behavioral health programs and services will remain available in Carpinteria, including assertive community treatment, supported housing, wraparound for children, in-home services for children, school-based mental health services and early childhood mental health services. In addition, residents of Carpinteria may be served by more than 30 programs and services based in Santa Barbara. In-person, mobile crisis response will continue to be available to Carpinteria residents by calling the 24/7 Access Line, (888) 868-1649.

Plant experts offer free talks

The public is invited to two free plant talks this month when native plant lovers from all over the state converge on Carpinteria on the weekend of March 10, 11 and 12 to discuss the business of the statewide California Native Plant Society chapters.

Denise Knapp from the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden will present on “Native Plant Hedgerows and Agriculture” on Friday, March 10, at 8 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 941 Walnut Ave. USGS botanist Kathryn McEachern will deliver a talk entitled “Rare Plants of the Northern Channel Islands” on Saturday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m.NEW in the same location.

To infinity and beyond Students from Canalino and Carpinteria Family schools sampled an alphabet soup of professional and academic options during Career Day and College Night on Feb. 23. Professionals ranging from police officers to veterinarians visited classrooms during the day to share their stories and answer questions about their jobs and the steps required to get them. The campus reopened that evening for College Night, where an array of activities introduced students to university pursuits.

The former linebacker, who graduated from Carpinteria High School and played professionally for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cleveland Browns, studied engineering at Cal Poly. Slippin’ away to the city by the bay Cvn

the summerland shore f r a n d av i s Sometimes you just gotta get away.

After days of heavy rain and sour news, you wake in the dark from a nightmare about trying to save a bunch of schoolkids from being deported, sneaking them into your car and trying to figure out where they’ll be safe. After a few days like this you have to take some time out, go to another place.

It’s good to have friends in San Francisco and a train going straight there, or almost—Oakland is close, and the Amtrak bus is waiting to take you into the city.

The train’s a long, slow ride, especially if they’re repairing some water-damaged tracks along the way, as they were when we headed north on a gray day.

An Amtrak ride teaches patience. You look out the high windows and do a slow study of just where you’ve stopped, rain-driven debris piled up in a steep cut beside the railbed, up on the bank some clumps of coreopsis blooming bright and unexpected yellow. You can always stroll down to the café car for a cup of tea and some donut holes. Or read your book.

It’s the beginning of slowing down time.

You eat in the dining car and are seated across from Uriel, a 65-year-old guy who makes his living playing “rinky-dink” piano in Elks halls and old folks’ homes.

He says he was a messed up Hippie in the ’60s, and it took a while and a little prison time to straighten him out, and now he doesn’t drink a drop. He tells you that the daughter he left when she was a little girl used the internet to find him, and that she’s promised to take care of him when he needs it. You talk over dinner while the Salinas Valley spins by in darkness beyond the windows. In the end you buy his CD for $10. He claims he usually eats faster, but says, “I like you guys.”

The train is two hours late, but the big bus is there to whisk you into the city, powering over the new Bay Bridge with its big swag of lights, through the tunnel, and onto the section where you see the city and that old Hills Brothers Coffee sign they’ve managed to preserve by the docks, and the upward thrust of lighted buildings that brighten the night and your mood.

You wake the next day in a room with bright bay windows and the sound of traffic outside, and then you’re off for the day’s adventures because your old college friends know every bus route in the city. You take BART through the underwater tunnel to the Oakland Museum of Art which has the best and biggest California history exhibit ever, starting with Native Americans—room curving to alcove curving to sitting area. You could spend days wandering through, but your time is limited.

There’s also the Black Panther exhibit to see, photos, recordings, music, books and objects like the big golden wicker chair that Panther leader Bobby Seale sat in. Mostly there are African Americans

viewing the exhibit, and the photos must look all too familiar to them, barricades and face-offs, blacks on one side, police on another. You’ve mostly forgotten about the Black Panthers, what gave rise to them and what they wanted, so your memory gets refreshed. You’ve forgotten that in the midst of cries for vengeance and violence they organized soup kitchens to feed children, but the pictures remind you, and you realize again that good can rise up out of bad just as easily as good can turn to bad—history taking another unexpected turn on the rusty wheel of time.

You use the city’s great bus system to ride from one side of town to the other, through the Mission up Bernal Heights and back to Russian Hill where your friends live, and then out to Golden Gate Park and the Richmond District. You listen to the bus’s windshield wipers swipe away drizzle as you trundle through the wet slick streets of downtown, neon lights refracted by rain. And you realize you’re happy to be riding up and down the hills of this very alive city, happy with your journey away.

There are other museums to see, the DeYoung and the Legion of Honor, which you visit on a rainy afternoon near the very last day of the Rodin exhibit, and you get to wander almost alone among the big bronze sculptures, peering at the wrinkles and folds laid in by the master. You learn that Auguste Rodin had a woman assistant who did a lot of the work but got no

credit. Her face in the photo is beautiful and sad, and you wonder if he drove her mad since she ended her life in an asylum.

Your mind fires with possibilities, questions for which there are no answers. But the questions revive your sleepy brain, which is reassuring.

It has begun to rain again when the train leaves Oakland, only an hour late.

You study the puddles and big pools of standing water you pass, the trash strewn along the tracks, piles of sodden mattresses and furniture between the makeshift hovels of the homeless, droopy tents and tarpaulins—dozens of them.

The rain makes them sadder and more miserable. And you wonder why we can’t do better for those forgotten people living like discards along the roadbed, among the trash. You’ve heard all the arguments, the excuses and reasons, words that don’t change anything, and change is what’s needed—a widening of our sensibilities to embrace something closer to grace.

You get home, and the dogs are overjoyed to see you. You settle in, wondering if you really want to read the morning paper after all. Maybe you just want more time to stare out the window at the green miracle taking place on the hillside behind your house.

Princess rescued us on Dec. 6, 2012 when she was already a well-rounded five-year-old. She brought peace and love to her best friend Nicholas at his greatest time of need. She got him through a devastating home fire where he lost everything except her. She got him through a divorce between his parents. She even got him through high school and his first semester of college. She loved short walks, long cuddle sessions and the occasional slice of pizza. She will be remembered for her loyalty and her ability to seemingly velcro herself to her daddy. Princess is survived by Nicholas, Nicole, Zaiden, Rooke, Shayde, Ferryn and Cinnabunn. She touched many lives during her time with us and will be deeply missed. Once her ashes are received from the Santa Barbara Humane Society she will be kept at home where she belongs.

The local high school and other organizations are gearing up for spring football practice and recruiting will be very aggressive.

Boys love football and relish the physical contact. Kids and teens do not have the judgment to recognize the dangers to their brains, necks and limbs. But no one can play any sport without parental permission. Kids put pressure on parents to sign consent forms. Conscientious parents will spend time to see what safety practices are being followed, analyze the risk of injury and study injury records before signing. Parents who value long term safety will guide kids to other sports like baseball, basketball, swimming or track. Those sports teach team spirit, discipline and athletic skills just like football without the same level of risk.

One of the side effects of sports injuries is use of painkillers. Prescription drug use can lead to drug dependence and often addiction to heroin or other street drugs. Law enforcement states a near epidemic of heroin use in Santa Barbara and Carpinteria.

Please, parents, do your homework and read every line of the consent form before you sign it. Brain injury or addiction will affect education, career and lifetime happiness. It is not worth the risk. Your child’s future is in your hands.

The many off-leash dogs at the Bluffs and on the Franklin Trail kept me on edge, and our walks were stressful. I resent the sense of entitlement of outlaws who keep their dog off-leash. Mostly, I resent how clueless they are of the situation they create which requires me, and many others they walk by, to make split-second self-defense decisions. Of course, telling them to follow the law is generally met with outrage.

Quickly, I got tired of off-leash dogs and stressful walks. I really don’t want to have to use the dog spray. So, I stopped going to the Franklin Trail and to the Bluffs. It’s too bad because I donated a lot of money for both and probably won’t anymore. I now take my dog to Shoreline Park because Santa Barbara has the resources and willingness to enforce leash laws—even on weekends and holidays, when it’s most needed.

Carpinteria simply doesn’t have the resources for omnipresent enforcement.

That’s why small town quality of life relies on civic behavior and involvement.

If we try hard enough, Carpinteria could be known for the world’s safest trails.

Without it, it’ll all go to the dogs.

Leashless lawlessness

Months ago, my dog got viciously attacked by an off-leash dog. I kicked, screamed, and thanks to the help of several passersby, managed to save her.

She was wounded but alive. As I told my traumatic story many times, I found out several acquaintances faced similar dog attacks. One told me she could not save her dog and helplessly watched her die.

Aware that dog attacks are common, I became determined never to be helpless again. I purchased a dog-repelling pepper spray and have carried it on every dog walk ever since.

I then took notice of Carpinteria’s many off-leash dogs. Each one running towards us required a judgment call: was it a self-defense situation? A pepperspray has to be used preemptively, when a charging dog is several feet away. That only gives a few seconds to make the right judgment call.

We put our son’s name into the lottery, and he was picked! He has blossomed in the safety of the small school environment, it laid a foundation for him socially and emotionally that allowed him to overcome his anxiety and focus on academics. He is now excelling at the Carpinteria Middle School, and we genuinely believe that had he not had CFS to nurture him in his early years he wouldn’t be as successful as he is now.

Other families might say they chose Family School because they love the teachers, or perhaps because of the attention our teachers give to environmental causes and service learning, and some families just love the idea of the multi-age classrooms. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to parenting—it’s just so great to have choices!

The author of a letter entitled “Don’t blame the Russians” that appeared in the Feb. 23 issue of Coastal View News is unhappy with the “far left,” that he claims is attempting to deceive people of “low intelligence” by saying that the outcome of our presidential election was “determined” by Russia.

Trump for what I’m not

between Russian intelligence and the Trump campaign before the election is currently under investigation by the FBI and intelligence agencies. Many people (even some intelligent ones!) think that Russia’s indisputable efforts to aid Trump had some effect on the election, but they disagree on how much. Trump and his surrogates say, by contrast, that Russia had absolutely no influence on the outcome.

We’ll never know whether Russian efforts truly made the difference, and quibbling over whether they did (as the author wants to do with his “far left” boogeyman), only diverts attention from the real issue.

The real issue is that a hostile, authoritarian foreign power—Russia—actively tried to sway the election in Trump’s favor. In the process, Russian operatives were in direct contact with the Trump campaign. Forget about whether Russian efforts made the difference—isn’t the letter writer shocked by that? If we “flip the script” and assume that Russia had preferred Clinton, wouldn’t he be shocked if Russia had interacted with her campaign, hacked and published hundreds of embarrassing emails about Trump and then she had won?

I cannot imagine any American, regardless of party, failing to recognize the seriousness of this threat to our liberty.

This isn’t about politics. Forget about left and right. This is about preserving the integrity of our elections and protecting our democracy.

Blue skies greeted the crowd at the intersection of Bailard and Carpinteria avenues last Saturday for the dedication ceremony of a memorial plaque honoring Bill “The Hotdog Man” Connell. Connell, who passed away suddenly a year ago, sold his “Surf Dog” at the site for many years. An Army veteran, Connell served in Germany in the 1970s and later became a tenacious advocate for Veterans rights. The Feb. 25 ceremony included members of the Santa Barbara Chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America, Congressman Salud Carbajal, First District Supervisor Das Williams and many of Connell’s longtime friends and customers.

City granny flat ordinance up for discussion

BY PETER DUGRÉ In Carpinteria it’s currently more difficult to build backyard cottages or convert garages to rentals than it is in most of the rest of the state. As of Jan. 1, the State of California enacted new laws designed to ease restrictions and promote what it refers to as Accessory Dwelling Units—colloquially known as granny flats—in order to combat the statewide housing crisis. Carpinteria has so far been exempt from state orders affecting other municipalities because land use in the city is under the purview of the California Coastal Commission and the Coastal Act. Still, city leaders have decided to reopen the discussion on the issue regulating add-ons at single-family residences following the state’s decision to confront the housing shortage by loosening its laws. The state law overrides much of what cities had done to restrict the proliferation of secondary units on single-family lots by reducing setback requirements, parking requirements and by barring utilities from charging hookup fees for some new units.

When the Carpinteria City Council opens the discussion later this month on regulating secondary units locally, it will be doing so voluntarily. Since the state handed down its law, alarms have been rung among residents concerned that the character and density of their neighborhoods are in jeopardy. The new law, they fear, could instigate a stampede of property owners eager to add rentals.

City Manager Dave Durflinger affirmed that the Accessory Dwelling Units law, SB 1069, does not apply here.

Concha Loma resident Jim Taylor was part of an active discussion on social media site nextdoor.com among neighbors earlier this year. He said the arguments both for and against loosening restrictions on secondary units are clear: “Already, around the corner from here, the street looks like a parking lot,” he said of the fear that adding units and people residing in them would add cars and congestion to neighborhoods. The state law prohibits parking restrictions for secondary units within ½ mile of public transportation.

Currently, the city code for secondary units mandates one covered parking spot per bedroom.

Taylor is schooled on local land-use issues as a boardmember for watchdog group Carpinteria Valley Association.

CVA’s mission is avoiding sprawl in Carpinteria by focusing development within the current urban footprint. He said the group has not taken a position when it comes to secondary units and is currently waiting to see if the Coastal Commission could force Carpinteria into updating its local code in accordance to the state laws.

“I’m torn. Say for example retired people rent out a small unit and it covers their property taxes and utilities for a year while providing affordable housing.

That’s a good thing,” Taylor said. “Rent for houses in my neighborhood is now about $4,000. Plumbers, cops, teachers, they can’t afford it. Workforce housing is gone.”

Durflinger said the upcoming staff report to the council will provide options for how the city could change its regulations to be more in line with the state and face the pervasive issue of the housing shortage. He maintains that the city is in no way required to follow the new state laws, and any action taken by local representatives would be voluntary.

Beyond that, if the city decides to update its regulations on secondary units, the Coastal Commission would have final say on whether to approve it in accordance with the Local Coastal Plan.

However, even if the Coastal Commission changes its interpretation of how the state law applies in Carpinteria, there’ll still be a mechanism for local control and curtailing the percentage of residences that can build additional units.

“Clearly developers are not building low-income housing, because it’s not in their best interest,” she said. “(Secondary units) are a way around that.”

(Cooney’s father, Lou Panizzon, was a teacher, coach, athletic director and principal at Carpinteria High School from 1969 to 2002.) I would run results cards, and when computers came, I worked on the sports results electronically. I worked at sporting events to spend time with my dad. It was fun!

Born in the Ukraine and trained at the Moscow University of the Arts, Olga Hotujac currently resides in Carpinteria where she paints in a style that is reminiscent of classical Impressionism. Gaviota photo contest invites shutterbugs

Stage reading of “Golf With Alan Shepard” comes to Plaza

Written by Carter W. Lewis and directed by Magie Mixsell, “Golf With Alan Shepard” will be performed as a stage reading at Plaza Playhouse Theater over the weekend of March 17 to 19. The play tells the story of four golfers who have been playing together weekly for years. Griff is a World War II vet and resident wet blanket; Milt, the most recent member of the group, is substituting for his beloved dead brother; Ned is in deep grief as he is a recent widower; and Larkin is an ex-priest coping with losing the trust and love of his God. These four seniors metaphorically play the back nine of their lives, facing the aches and pains of aging and the losses that accompany the twilight years. Tensions run between the characters as they playfully barb at each other, but by the end of the play it is clear that the men’s lifelong friendships and weekly golf game help them through the final stages of life.

The one-weekend production is presented as a fundraiser for the nonprofit Plaza Playhouse Theater, which will celebrate its 89th Anniversary in April. Two-thousand dollars in prizes are up for the taking in The Santa Barbara County Trails Council’s annual photo competition. Photographs of the Gaviota region— beaches, ocean, meadows and mountains—will be considered in five categories: Landscape, Recreation, Wildlife, Close-up and “Only in Gaviota.” Images must be submitted before midnight on May 1. The goal of the competition is to capture significant moments that evoke the feeling of the Gaviota Coast, and images will be shared with community members via the online gallery and at an awards ceremony and reception in June 2017.

Coast Supply comes to Santa Claus Lane

BY JAY BUSHEY Coast Supply Co. has opened its custom-designed doors to the public to assist with any flooring, window, glass and home needs.

“Our motto is ‘Love Where You Live’,” said Ryan Reed who opened Coast Supply Co. with his wife, Aimee, this past January. Ryan described the store as a “one-stop-shop,” where customers can consult professionals and purchase remodeling products and furniture. “Here, you have access to experts, window estimators, custom couch designers…

We bring it all to the same place,” he explained.

Coast Supply Co. is located on Santa Claus Lane in the former location of Ryan’s former business, Reed Floors.

Ryan operated Reed Floors for several years before selling it in 2010 to help start Redeemer Community Church. There, he served as a senior pastor before purchasing Coast Glass Co. in Goleta. When the owners of Reed Floors announced that they were relocating to Santa Barbara, Ryan saw an opportunity to return to Carpinteria. “Opening a home store with Aimee seemed like a perfect fit for Carp,” Ryan explained. “We’re Carpinteria natives, and we like to take care of folks here.”

Ryan and Aimee believe that Coast Supply Co. fills a unique need in Carpinteria. “There’s nowhere else in Carp to buy flooring or the kinds of windows we offer,” explained Ryan. Aimee added that, “Even in Santa Barbara County, there aren’t many places to buy furniture. It can be hard to find new items.”

When designing the store, Ryan and Aimee worked to create a very tactile experience. Visitors can run their fingers along soft wool carpeting samples, feel the textures of Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring, and compare material options from a regularly expanding flooring catalogue.

In the glass section, they can look through display windows and step through display doors. After exploring the store, visitors are welcome to relax on sample couches and feel the different fabric and cushioning options.

“We want to allow people to make more informed decisions than what you might get when buying online or through a box store,” explained Ryan. “Our desire is to be really inviting and approachable.”

Aimee is particularly excited to work with customers in the home division of the store, which, in addition to a full catalogue of furniture, will offer custom couches and area rugs. “I love the creative part,” said Aimee. “We want to help people make their home a safe place and a place they can use to bless others.”

The Reeds believe that Coast Supply Co. stands out for its focus on customer service, but emphasized that they still regularly beat box store prices. “Through my experience with past businesses and my time as a pastor, I’ve always been in the people business. Honesty, integrity and hardwork have all been at play in what I’ve done,” said Ryan. Aimee added, “We stand behind things here. If there’s something you’re unhappy with, we can

Moving forward, Ryan and Aimee plan to bring in new products and replace the storefront’s windows and doors with products offered in the store. They will also be opening a second location in Goleta, which will offer the same products and services as the Carpinteria location.

A grand opening is in the works for this month, with the date to be announced.

“We want to do a big shindig with barbecue, live music and activities for kids,” said Ryan. “We are so excited to be open, and we want to invite the community to come celebrate with us.”

2017 Baseball Preview

With last year’s Carpinteria High School baseball team finishing third with a 9-3 record in the Tri-Valley League (TVL), the bar has been set high for this year’s squad. “The third-place finish and 16 wins (overall) were good measures of success in 2016; however, the true measure of our team was the progress that we made and the chemistry that was built over the course of the season,” said Warrior coach Pat Cooney. According to Cooney, the 2017 team has already begun its work. “This group can do well. The team can compete with any of the Tri-Valley League teams, and if we earn a spot in the playoffs anything can happen,” said Cooney.

Gone from last year’s team are eight departing seniors, but Carpinteria returns four seniors with a ton of experience: Tony Vega, Coco Carrillo, Sal Delgado and David Martinez. Cooney will also have some other seniors that are multi-sport athletes, such as Jacob Garside, who toted the ball for the football team last fall.

The Warriors also figure to be strong on the mound this year with senior righties Delgado, Martinez and Vega to accompany two sophomore lefties in Chase Mayer and Noah Nuño. To support the pitching staff, Carpinteria should also be strong up the middle defensively. “Strength up the middle starts with the catcher and we have a great one in junior Toby Spach,” said Cooney whose backstop has emerged as one of the team’s leaders. The middle infielders will be Vega, Dominic Sturdivan and Martinez, while Carrillo and Delgado should also share time in centerfield.

As the rest of the lineup gets pieced together, utility players such as Mayer, Nuño and Garside could play key roles. Returning seniors Albert Hugo, Brandon Muralles and Michael Vazquez will also play important roles. “The offense will be built on trying to score once an inning,” explained Cooney. The attack will be based on sacrificing and moving the runners over. Cooney looks for Mayer, Delgado, Martinez, Carrillo, Vega, and Spach to have big years, but Hugo, Vazquez, Muralles, Nuño and Garside can handle the stick some, too.

St. Bonaventure and Grace Brethren who tied for the TVL title last year, should again be the teams to beat. “It remains a dogfight between all of the teams like Carpinteria, Malibu, Nordhoff and new additions Fillmore and Santa Paula,” said Cooney whose goal is for the squad to compete every game in hopes of earning a playoff berth.

The regular season home opener took place after CVN went to print on March 1 at Calderwood Field.

After narrowly missing a spot in last year’s CIF playoffs, the Cate School baseball team opens the season with 11 returning players that include five seniors.

Last year, the Rams were tied for third in the Frontier League with a 6-4 record with Fillmore, but the team failed to get the nod to qualify for the tournament last season.

For Cate Head Baseball Coach Ben Soto, however, it’s not all about winning.

“More than making the playoffs, I’m starting my 24th year here at Cate, and we’re going to have fun,” said the longtime coach who also leads the football team. “And we’re going to learn about the game and learn about ourselves.”

Of the 11 returning players from last year’s team, two were first-teamers on the 2016 All-Frontier League team: sophomore Jack Deardorff and senior captain Joel Revo. “We have five players coming back this year who received some kind of league recognition last year,” said Cate Assistant Coach Dave Soto. The other three are junior Emily Burns, senior captain Dylan Ell and another senior Bryce Huerta. Burns was named as an honorable mention, and Ell and Huerta were placed on the second team.

With the absence of a softball program at the school, for the second year in a row, the Rams will have female athletes on the team. Besides Burns, junior Emma Cordova returns; and freshman Carol Cai will make her debut March 2 when Cate travels to play Bishop Diego. “We’re keeping all three, not because there is no softball,” Ben said. “They held their own as far as drills and everything we do.”

On the mound, the Rams will rely heavily on the arms of Deardorff and Revo.

“They’re going to have to keep us in a lot of games,” said Cate Assistant Coach Matt Drew, who’s in charge of the pitching staff. “I think we (the coaching staff) all agree that we don’t have the power that some of the other teams do, and the power we’ve had in the past.”

Defensively, the Rams will be breaking in a new catcher, sophomore Ethan Cassulo, who’s played both football and basketball at the school. Last year’s

February 22 – The Cate School boys tennis team opened the 2017 season with a win over Santa Barbara High School.

The match ended 9-9, but the Rams came out the victor with a 77-67 total game advantage. Senior Kevin Ha and freshman Ethan Ha led Cate with sweeps in singles. Combined, the brothers lost only four games in six sets. The number-one doubles team of senior Christian Herman and junior Nicholas Hildebrandt won two matches, and then junior Joseph Thomassen pulled out the final set to even the score at 9-9. “After only two days of practice because of all the rain, I knew we were in for a wild ride,” Cate coach Jason Saltoun-Ebin commented. “But with so much talent and experience returning from last season, I thought we still had a good shot today against Santa Barbara.”

February 23 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team opened the season on a winning note after their first match was rained out beating Channel Islands in a non-league match, 12-6. With Jeff Saito filling in for regular coach, Charles Bryant, the Warriors were led in singles by number-two Jacob Ascencio and number-three Jeremy Saito who each swept and only dropped three games total.

In singles, Steve Poulos also went 1-0 and gained his first varsity win. In doubles, Sam Truax/Luke Nahooikaika went 2-0, and Solomon Nahooikaika/Kirby Zapata went 3-0 to finish out the scoring. “The road definitely gets tougher, however, as we have scheduled very daunting non-league matches. Malibu, Cate, Oaks Christian and Arroyo Grande are our next foes,” said Bryant. “Hopefully the experience will make them stronger in about a month when we start league.”

February 27 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team lost a non-league match at Malibu, 14-4. In singles, number-one Jeremy Saito went 2-1, and in doubles, numberthree Sam Truax/Luke Nahooikaika went 2-0 before being subbed out. “Overall, I was happy with the team’s play,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. “They never gave up in any of the sets, and with a little luck could have made this a much closer final score,” added Bryant.

Number-one singles player Jeremy Saito won both his sets before being subbed out due to a minor injury. He did not win, but he looked to be in mid-season form already,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant. “We have a tournament this weekend followed by away matches at Oaks Christian and Arroyo Grande. Both are on par, if not stronger than, the competition we have faced the past few days,” explained Bryant. Carpinteria is now 1-2 overall.

February 28 - The Carpinteria High School girls softball team lost in a non-league away game versus Cabrillo, 10-8. Amanda Blair pitched and gave up five hits to go along with 12 strikeouts. Mikayla Blair went three-for-five with two RBI, while Tori Kelley was two-for-four with two doubles and an RBI. McKenzie Kephart batted three-for-four. The Warriors jumped out in front 5-0 in the second inning, as Isabell Studt started the inning with a single to right field. The next batter Samantha Saenz walked to put runners at first and second. Then Kephart laid down a bunt single to load the bases, and KK Diaz hit a deep fly ball to right center. It went off the glove of the centerfielder, scoring Studt and Saenz and sending Kephart to second. She ended up scoring on a single by Mikayla Blair.

February 28 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team hosted Bishop Diego to start off the season and fell to the Cardinals in straight sets by a score of 3-0. The match scores were 25-11, 25-21 and 25-19. “The Carpinteria Warriors had a slow start,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. “The Warriors began to pick up momentum during the secBILL SWING ond and third sets; however, it was a CHS’s Mayerick Rodriguez squeaks the bit too late,” added Garcia. The Carpinteria Aquatics Club team set out to Ventura last weekend with its firstever all girls water polo team. in its inaugural game, the 14U lady tritons fell to Gold Coast Green water polo team 10-5 in Oxnard on Feb. 25. Despite losing its first game, the lady tritons showed promise buoyed by performances from natalia Perez, Piper Clayton and izabella slosberg. Clayton led the team in scoring with three goals, and both slosberg and Perez logged one goal apiece. the lady tritons will look to bounce back Saturday, March 4 at Oxnard High School against Arroyo Grande.

Tritons swim into finals at three-day meet

eight members of the Carpinteria Aquatics Club swim team traveled up to san Luis Obispo for the uSA Swimming Coastal Championships over the Feb. 25 weekend. Caleb Classen made finals in multiple events, and his sister Taylor dropped 5 seconds in her 100-yard backstroke. Nathan and Sydney endow both made the finals in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard backstroke and 100 free. Asher Smith swam the 50 back and 100 free and took first place in both of his heats. Augie Sheaffer also made finals in a couple of his events and bettered his time in the afternoon finals.

Lexi persoon made it to the finals in all three of her events. “We as coaches were very impressed on their drive to swim hard and compete with big name clubs from up and down the coast,” reported coach Morgan Youngs.

Cate’s first game was canceled last week, so the Rams will open at bishop Diego on March 2 in a non-league game. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Ralph and emlynn iannelli placed 14th out of 28 teams in the Advanced Division. briana Sanchez and Shawn Godkin competed in the intermediate Division, and both set personal records in front squats. emlynn, owner of empower, reported, “The massacre was great because location wise, we were closer to lA which means there was a bigger pool of amazing athletes to compete against. in other words, the competition was stiff. We had a blast, regardless.”

SPARK45 prepares to open second location

SpARK45, the fitness and physical therapy studio on 550 Maple Ave., will soon be expanding to a second location in Lavender Court, 4660 Carpinteria Ave. The Maple location will now host SpARK45’s physical therapy service while the fitness side of the business will move to Lavender Court in the next few weeks. The expansion of the one-year-old business, will allow SpARK45 to offer additional classes that include nine new megaformers and two new instructors, Hillary phillips and Michelle Straub.

Craigslist fraud

On Feb. 17 at approximately 5 p.m. a man and his son came to the Sheriff’s substation in Carpinteria to report a theft by fraud. The men had been shopping for a truck on Craigslist and they sent $3,800 via electronic payment through Bank of America to a person who gave her name as “Kathy Davis Lynn” in Jackson, Miss.

The woman had given the men an Ebay support phone number but after a couple of calls, the number no longer worked.

The reporting deputy advised the men that it was unlikely the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office would do much investigating as both the truck and the receiving bank were outside the state of California.

“All Over but the Shoutin’”

by Rick Bragg

The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist for the New York Times, Rick Bragg’s natural storytelling ability takes the reader through the hard-edged, gritty realism of growing up “dirt poor,” with humor, to find the miraculous in the everyday. This memoir is a document of one man’s effort to unravel the meaning of his family’s past. His mother’s sacrifice and suffering form the core of Bragg’s experience and so of this book. Turning hard-scrabble into a pleasant memory was something she would do for her boy again and again as he grew. Bragg recalls sitting on a gunnysack at the age of 2 or 3 and being dragged through a field by his mother. It is only years later that he realizes she had been working, picking cotton “and now and then she looks back over her shoulder to smile at the 3-year-old boy … who rides the back of the six-foot-long sack like a magic carpet.’’

4 reasons to write short stories CVN

THE WRITE PRACTICE JOE BUNTING For most of my creative writing life, I’ve tried to write novels. Novels are the pinnacle of fiction writing in the same way oil painting is the pinnacle of visual art. I thought that if I was going to be a writer, I didn’t have a choice but to write novels.

However, recently, my thoughts have changed. In fact, for a few years I locked my novel away in my desk drawer to focus all my attention on short stories.

Here are four reasons why I chose to write short stories instead of novels:

1. The best writers started with short stories.

“The Girls” by Emma Cline

Author Emma Cline defies her young age in the debut novel “The Girls.” The 20-something presents a story of a cult led by a Manson-like figure in the 1960s, but as the title suggests, the tale is told from the perspective of the girls held spellbound by their charismatic leader.

Evie, just 14 when she’s drawn into the cult, narrates, holding readers as captive as the girls themselves. “The Girls” will be discussed at the next meeting of the Carpinteria Library Book Club on Wednesday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the library, 5141 Carpinteria Ave. The public is invited to attend the gathering and share reflections on the bestselling novel, which is available for borrow now at the library.

Stephen King, Ernest Hemingway and Mark Twain became famous writing novels, but before they wrote novels, they published short stories. Ernest Hemingway wrote 24 stories about a single character, Nick Adams, and most were written before his breakout novel, “The Sun Also Rises.” Twenty-one years before “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” Mark Twain published his first short stories in a local newspaper.

Stephen King started submitting short stories at such a young age that by the time he was 14 he had a stack of rejection letters so thick he could no longer nail it to the wall.

2. Short stories are practice

You know how I feel about practice.

Short stories give you the chance to write a full-length story from beginning to end. You can practice every part of the writing process, and you can do it in a matter of weeks. If you write a novel, it could take years to practice the whole process. And if it’s your first novel, after all that hard work it probably won’t be published. Short stories are a training ground, the place where you can make all your mistakes before you jump into the much more difficult process of writing a novel.

3. You need to publish something sooner

And by that I mean you need to get your work out of the dark closet of your computer screen and into people’s hands as soon as you can. Feedback is the fastest way to improve.

Why? Because you need people to tell you how bad it is. Or how amazing it is. Or how good that one paragraph is, especially compared to how bad the rest of the manuscript is. When I finished my last short story, I sent it to over 20 people, and the feedback I got from them made me completely change the feel of the whole story. That’s why we practice in the comments section and not on our own. We all need feedback, whether we’re Stephen King or Joe Bunting.

4. Because you have stories to tell

You should write short stories so you can experience the taut tightrope walk of the moment, the inexhaustible richness of the present. You should write short stories so your children can read them when they’re your age and think, “Wow. My father/my mother was a writer.”

You should write short stories because you’re consuming stories every day, from books and television and movies and newspapers, because you want to stop consuming and start creating. You should write short stories to discover what your life is for and why you’re here and what you’re supposed to do.

Don’t wait to write

In short, writing short stories is one of the best ways to practice writing, get feedback, and get your stories into the world. If you want to grow as a writer, this is one of the best ways to do it.

Inez Marigold Miles Churchill

Katherine Dawn Buchmiller and Kenneth Mark Dunn were married on July 15, 2016 in the Los Angeles California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The bride is the daughter of Karl and Patricia Buchmiller. She graduated from Carpinteria High School in 2009, received her Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University in Elementary Education, and teaches first grade in Blythe, Calif. The groom is the son of Mark and Twyla Dunn. He was raised in Covina, CA. He graduated from Aberdeen High School in Idaho, then served an LDS mission in Long Beach, Calif. He received his Bachelors degree from Brigham Young University in Spanish Translation and plans on attending law school in the near future.

Katie sewed many of her bridesmaids’ dresses, her veil and decorations for her receptions. Her mother sewed her wedding dress. Receptions were held in Carpinteria, Covina, and Blythe, Calif. and Blackfoot, Idaho. The newlyweds honeymooned from California to Idaho, visiting Dinosaur National Monument, Craters of the Moon and Yellowstone National Parks.

Inez Marigold Miles Churchill was born in a hurry on Feb. 10, 2017. Parents Rebekah Miles and Mark Churchill didn’t quite make it to the hospital before their baby girl arrived in a Chevy pickup truck on the side of the road. Weighing 7 pounds 7 ounces, Inez was delivered with the help of her father, the Oak View Fire Department (thankfully firefighter Ryan had delivered all three of his own children), and her doulas Grace and Saralynn. Though Inez’s parents were surprised by the swift birth, they reported that everything “worked out perfectly.”

Tykes hop on bikes at Howard School

Pre-kindergarten and preschool children at the Howard School recently enjoyed a scooter/bike day at school. After warming up with stretches and exercises to develop gross motor skills, the students in Mrs. Robarge’s and Miss. Murray’s class donned their helmets and learned about bike safety, signals and how to be smart on the road.

Free breakfast pilot program coming to Aliso

Starting Monday, March 6 students at Aliso School will receive a free “grab-andgo” breakfast at the beginning of their morning nutrition break. “Portable” foods like hard-boiled eggs, yogurt parfaits and apples will be available to children as part of a pilot program to determine participation levels for possible implementation district wide said Laurel Schwartz, Child Nutrition and Wellness Coordinator for the Carpinteria Unified School District. “Kids benefit from increased attention when they are less hungry,” Schwartz noted, “everyone (teachers and students) wins.” Aliso School Principal Dr. Michelle Fox, teachers and Cafeteria Manager Brenda Wolfolk each played a part in setting up the pilot program, which, Schwartz stressed, is not “breakfast in the classroom,” nor is the program meant to replace a healthy breakfast that students should eat at home each day before school—though for some food security is a real concern.

Church hosts TK/Kinder information night

Carpinteria Unified School District staff will present an information night about transitional kindergarten and kindergarten on Thursday, March 2 at 6 p.m. in the Carpinteria Community Church Hall, 1111 Vallecito Road. The meeting will accommodate both English and Spanish speakers and provide professional translation on headsets. Street directories will be available for parents of prospective students to learn which campus—Canalino, Aliso or Summerland—will be their home school.

Interest forms for Carpinteria Family School and registration packets will be available.

Families with interest in CFS will still register at their home school.

His parents are Bill and Jessica Keiper Edwards of Carpinteria. Jefferies works as a dental hygienist in Honolulu. She attended James B. Conant High School, Western Illinois University and the College of DuPage. Her parents are Jon F. and Jacqui Kaday Jefferies.
