Community responds to Trump’s crackdown on immigrants

“Remember you were aliens once, remember you were immigrants once,” noted Monsignor Richard Martini, of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, to a crowd of approximately 125 people who gathered to listen to a bilingual immigration panel sponsored by indivisible Carpinteria on the night of March 6 at the Veteran’s Memorial hall.

Martini was joined by Carpinteria immigration attorney Marisol Alarcon; Frank Rodriguez of CAUSE (Santa Barbara) and Jesus Rocha of California Rural Legal Assistance, inc. during the 90-minute gathering that included many questions from the audience. About 20 percent of the crowd was Spanish-speaking Latinos, panel coordinator Suzanne Requejo said. the indivisible panel discussion followed a March 5 event held at St. Joseph Catholic Church entitled “Preparing Your Family for immigration Enforcement.”

Congressman Salud Carbajal attended the event, which was conducted in Spanish and informed attendees of their rights and what to do if confronted by an immigration agent.

The crowd that packed into the Vet’s Hall heard panelists speak on immigration Monday night. if officers from Immigration Control Enforcement attempt to make contact. “We did not promote any form of civil disobe-

dience,” said Martini. “We simply wanted to make immigrants, documented or otherwise, aware that they have rights which they should not naively waive.”

At the indivisible event, moderator and indivisible Carpinteria co-founder Leslie Westbrook noted, “We are living in dark times when a parent and child can be separated and families ripped apart.”

Each panelist spoke passionately (and in both languages) on immigration—a subject that was chosen unanimously by the indivisible group to tackle for its second meeting.

Martini stressed the importance of compassion and asked people to look into their own family histories of immigration, noting his family immigrated from Sicily, ireland and Germany, and suggested we share our family stories with more recent immigrants in our community who are frightened right now. “People have the right to migrate to sustain their lives,” said Martini, “and a country has a right to regulate its borders with justice and mercy.” immigration attorney Marisol Alcaron expressed that there are a lot of rumors

surrounding the outcome of President trump’s orders to seek undocumented criminals. “People are afraid to leave home and are very vulnerable and scared at this time,” she said. She also noted that the immigrant population is especially vulnerable to crimes, since many are afraid to seek police assistence.

Rodriquez informed the indivisible crowd that by texting ALERtA to 24587, they will receive information on their cell phones about any iCE action.

Also in response to the new administration’s aggressive approach to immigrants, Carpinteria Unified School District’s Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution at its Feb. 14 meeting that effectively designated its schools as sanctuaries. Boardmember Maureen Claffey said that above and beyond the politics at play these days, “Classrooms have to be safe spaces.”

Jesus Rocha from CRLA thanked the crowd for attending the indivisible meeting. “it’s nice to see all of you here, it shows a desire to help each other,” he said. “We are a community who believes in human rights.”

Canalino school and CFs site plan incorporates all phases of the measure projects outlined for the campus.

Measure U update: Canalino School

Beginning this week, CVN will be publishing bi-weekly profiles on each Carpinteria Unified School District campus and the work being done with Measure U funds.

Canalino School, with its aging portable classrooms augmenting the main campus buildings, and the school-withina-school of Carpinteria Family School, presents a challenge to planners tasked with modernizing, integrating and optimizing the facilities using bond monies from Measure U. However, that challenge is being met as input from on-campus site committees, combined with re-designed campus renderings, will soon go before the Division of State Architects for approval to begin construction.

Perhaps the most significant change on the Canalino campus will be the relocation of Carpinteria Family School from a scattering of classrooms throughout Canalino to a cluster of on the south side of the campus near the district office.

CFS will still operate independently and continue sharing the cafeteria and other facilities at Canalino.

The DSA currently has a backlog of four months, which looks to delay the approval process for construction on the Canalino campus. But work is set to commence this May with the installation of a new fire alarm and “voice evacuation system” at the school, as well as moving portable classrooms to the blacktop area in order to construct foundations for the new, modular Gen7 classrooms that will be brought in next year. Both the fire alarm/voice evac installation and the moving of the portables will happen over the summer months and do not require DSA approval.

Sophisticated Gen7 modular classrooms, built by American Modular Systems, are central to the Measure U campus upgrades across the district. Energy efficient, LEED certified buildings, constructed from recycled and recyclable materials with low VOC interiors and natural light, the

• Approved by voters on Nov. 4, 2014 • Passage rate: 66.3% • $90 million • Tax rate of $46.50 per $100,000 of assessed property value modular buildings save school districts 30 percent in installation costs and energy consumption, according to AMS. “We plan to submit our orders for the Gen7 buildings in the next three months,” Measure U Facilities Coordinator Cindy Abbott said. “We will order the buildings for Carpinteria High School, Canalino and Carpinteria Middle School at the same time,” Abbott continued, adding that the buildings for Aliso School will be ordered about six months later.

While factory construction of the Gen7 buildings only takes 90 days, the popularity of the modular systems has created a backlog, and orders now take one year to complete. The Measure U project timeline has the buildings slated for installation at Canalino in the summer of 2018, so despite backlogs, the project appears to be on schedule.

Canlino School’s library and computer lab will be moved into a new Learning Center of approximately 2,400 square feet in the form of another Gen7 building.

That building will be installed near the kindergarten wing on the El Carro Lane side of the campus.

David Weniger, CUSD’s Director of Facilities and Operations, pointed out that Measure U funds are for facilities and infrastructure only—“anything (that lasts) more than 25 years.”

In the interest of creating 21st century

schools complete with robust IT systems, Cat 6 cables for upgraded wireless technology will also be installed.

Existing school buildings, constructed in the 1950s, will get ceiling and wall treatments and new, safer door handles.

Weniger noted that the existing buildings are standing the test of time quite well, as opposed to the deteriorating portable classrooms. “Someone really thought about what they were doing when they laid out these buildings” he said, referring to the way the east-west orientation of the angled-roof structures allows for natural

light while avoiding direct sun exposure.

New heating and venting systems and upgraded utilities in most of the campus structures are part of the upcoming work at Canalino. Modernizing the restrooms and adding a restroom to one of the Gen-7 buildings is also a part of the master plan.

Work has already been completed on the cafeteria/multi-purpose room at Canalino, with new floors and table systems that fold neatly into the walls. Still, the kitchen needs attention—another item on the Measure U to-do list. “We’re working on 1950s flooring,” said Julie Hathaway, Canalino’s Cafeteria Manager.

While clearly committed to the students she has served at the school since 1999, Hathaway also said that “things (in the kitchen) are crumbling; things are breaking down. We need more storage, a better refrigerator/freezer—it’s time for a remodel.”

Measure U construction projects will take place in three phases that roughly correspond to the priorities detailed in the master plan that guided the ballot initiative. An expansion of Canalino’s parking lot along El Carro Lane is a component of the third phase, implementation of which will depend on funds remaining after the higher priority projects are completed.

Family Bibles can be a genealogy goldmine and will often clear up conflicts in the memories of your relatives. But even with these, take care to heed telltale clues.

The popularity of tracing our roots has soared in the last decade, making Genealogy one of the most popular hobbies in the nation. If you have considered researching and building your family tree, here are a few tips to get you started.

First, begin with what you know.

Who do you know best? Yourself! On a sheet of paper, record your full name at birth, birth date/place, and marriage date/place if applicable. Women are always listed by their maiden name, and middle names and nicknames should also be noted.

Next, list the same information for your parents and grandparents, and if they are no longer living add the date/place of their death.

Talk to your parents and other relatives, too, to gather this information firsthand, keeping in mind that it’s possible that aunts, uncles and cousins have more information on earlier generations than your immediate family. Birth, marriage, and death records are vital, and these are what you will be in search of for every person you add to your tree, along with citing where you got the information.

Another source for this information may be a family Bible. Has your family kept one through the generations listing these events? Family Sample pedigree chart. Obituaries

Patricia Anne Latham 1927-2017

Patricia Latham, a lifelong resident of Carpinteria and Santa Barbara, died surrounded by her family on Feb. 14 after a short illness. Pat was born in Santa Barbara, the eldest child of Ina and Marc Latham, who had relocated to the area from Oregon to work in the lumber business here.

The family moved to Carpinteria in 1930 after Marc opened the Carpinteria Valley Lumber Company, and they welcomed son Robert that same year. Pat attended elementary and high school in Carpinteria and went to Oregon State University; after graduating, she returned to California and earned a teaching credential in primary education. She worked in the San Francisco Bay Area for two years and then accepted a position in the Goleta Union School District, teaching elementary school there for 20 years. Upon retirement she moved back to the family home in Carpinteria, where she resided for the remainder of her life.

A woman of strong social conscience, Pat supported many local and national agencies that educate the young, provide aid to underserved communities, and protect the environment, among them Direct Relief, Habitat for Humanity, Planned Parenthood, the Nature Conservancy and the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara. She also had an intense appreciation for the arts and supported community organizations such as Opera Santa Barbara, KUSC radio, and the Music Academy of the West. A voracious reader of literary and travel journals, she was an eager contributor to outreach and literacy efforts by the Friends of the Carpinteria Library.

As much a student of life as a teacher, Pat enjoyed the experience of international travel and made several trips to Europe and Australia. She also loved the American Southwest and made many road trips there with friends in her 1967 Mustang, collecting artwork along the way. She was a regular visitor to the Bay Area to see her Aunt Elizabeth and cousins. For many years Pat was an avid genealogist, tracing her family history back to their New England origins in the Puritan era of the 17th century. Pat enjoyed sharing her enthusiasm for the past and served occasionally as a docent at the Carpinteria Valley Historical Society.

Pat was predeceased by her parents Ina and Marc Latham, her brother Robert Latham, and her beloved cat Ginkgo. She is survived by her nephew Van Latham, niece Ann Latham (Rossana) and sisterin-law Vera Bensen (Donald). A memorial service will be held on April 1 at 2 p.m. at the Carpinteria Cemetery, to be followed by a reception at the family home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite organization.

Stanley L. Mayer

Stanley L. Mayer passed away peacefully the evening of February 19, 2017 at Valle Verde in Santa Barbara, California at the age of 88. Prior to his move to Valle Verde, Stanley had been a long-time resident of Carpinteria, California.

He was born on May 14, 1928 to Harry and Beulah Mayer in Los Angeles, California, and grew up as an only child.

His father was a medical doctor and his mother was a registered nurse. Stanley, being a devoted son with a strong faith, cared for his parents until their passing.

Stanley attended UCLA, graduating in 1964 with a degree in accounting and was a lifetime member of the UCLA Alumni Association. He had been employed as a mail carrier by the U.S. Postal Service and later dabbled in real estate throughout Southern California.

Although Stanley never married or had children, he had a love and passion for dogs, particularly his dog Grover. He also served as an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Carpinteria and loved to garden. Stanley was a kind man with a calm demeanor and dry wit. He will be missed!

Stanley is preceded in death by his parents Harry and Beulah Mayer and by his long-time friend, Hilda C. Anderson.

Stanley is survived by his many friends, including the extended Schenker family.

He is now at peace in heaven with his parents, Hilda, and of course, his dog Grover.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 11th at Faith Lutheran Church, 1335 Vallecito Place (at Ogan Rd.) in Carpinteria, California.

A reception in the church hall will follow the service.

Road work creates bike hazards

All kinds of pooches love the pack walk

First, I want to let you know how much I enjoy the CVN each week. I appreciate your presence in the community as well as supporting many small businesses, including mine, Spark45 Fitness and Physical Therapy, with great briefs and photos of ribbon cuttings.

I was super excited to see last week’s edition, as I was on the pack walk with K-9 Solutions on the Carpinteria Bluffs. I saw Robin Karlsson taking pictures and was eager to see if the picture made it into the paper.

My excitement turned to disappointment when I saw the caption for the picture. To me, the caption was not accurate.

The caption stated it was “About 35 dogs with aggression issues.”

Personally, I have been training Otis, my 6-month-old black labradoodle, with K-9 Solutions for several months. I choose to train Otis (and mostly me), not because of any issues, but because I want to have a well-trained and socialized dog both for his safety and happiness, as well as mine and other people’s around us. I choose to attend the pack walk to help Otis have more experiences with new dogs and people, so that he is comfortable in all situations. Otis and many other dogs on the pack walk are there for that exact reason, not because of aggression issues.

Yes, some dogs go to training because they are reactive/aggressive, but I feel the caption in the paper might scare people away from the pack walk if they think a big group/pack of aggressive (and scary) dogs.

I know that many people have fears of dogs, and I worry that this caption may scare people even more if they happen to see us walking the Bluffs in the future.

In response to the letter “Leashless lawlessness” in the March 2 edition of Coastal View News: I am truly sorry about your dog attack and can understand your fear. I have had my dogs off leash on hiking trails all over the county for 40 years, and I have never witnessed a dog attack.

I am not sure how common they are, but there are always irresponsible owners.

I have worked hard to keep my dogs well trained. I never have witnessed any dog attack on the Bluffs either, and I am there a lot. I have bear spray, which has a 20-foot spray and I wouldn’t hesitate to use it. I keep it around for the two legged kind more that the four. Dogs need to run free and socialize to be happy. Please don’t take your fear out on the Bluffs or Franklin Trail. They need your support!

Trump for what he is

In response to the letter “Trump for what I’m not” in the March 2 edition of Coastal View News: Congratulations, Stuart Chapman. You got exactly what you wanted and deserve. It’s a pity for the few hundred million (and maybe billion) other people who are looking for social justice. So you prefer social injustice? Tough luck, too, if you’re black, a woman, Muslim, refugee, right? Or the millions of us who are white men, don’t need section 8 housing or free tuition, or food stamps or anything else but we just want to make sure that our fellow Americans have a chance to lead a life that is worthy of this country and for what we stand for. I wish you and your president of self-centeredness all the best.

White blight

Stuart Chapman’s letter last week is a painful lesson on how white privilege manifests itself as cruel situational irony.

Mr. Chapman lists minorities (real and historical), government services, and social justice as unconnected to his life as a white male, yet he bemoans the lack of government attention paid to his issues, issues he admits he doesn’t need government involvement to solve. And while blame cannot be put on any individual white male for a system that does not hinder their ability to seek opportunity, there is blame for all members of our society when we continue to deny opportunity to others because they are not white males.

So if Mr. Chapman voted for Trump because he wanted someone to represent his best interests as a white male, he did the logical thing because Trump is doing and will do everything he can to return to a society where only white men are given a pass to the American Dream.

There are new dangers for bicyclists in Carpinteria. Recently, road stripes and barricades were added to the Linden and Casitas Pass bridges. This reduced the space needed by cyclists to proceed safely. Fortunately, there are ways to counteract this.

Cyclists can ride in the middle of the lane while in the danger zone. Drivers must reduce their speed behind cyclists riding in the lane and speed up only after the cyclist is past the danger zone and moves to the right. I assure you, cyclists will not dawdle in the lane; we want to get out of danger as quickly as possible!

Please be patient and considerate with cyclists while these conditions exist. Our safety is at stake! Thank you for sharing the road.

As someone who has worked in an animal shelter, ridden along with Animal Control, and been involved in dog rescue for many years, I totally understand why many people dislike or are afraid of dogs.

The battle between dog lovers and dog haters goes on eternally, as evidenced in a letter last week. A key issue here is that the only legal off leash areas are on the far side of Santa Barbara, a 26 mile round trip on a crowded road. Allowing a couple of local beaches to have off leash hours before 10 and after 4 could improve things for everyone.

“The LEGO Batman Movie”

“Everything is awesome … Everything is cool when you’re part of a team.” To be sure, everything is awesome, and cool, when you’re part of the LEGO-movie-watchers team. “The LEGO Batman Movie” may not compete with this past weekend’s Oscar picks, but it’s plenty awesome, and, as all the nerds will agree, it’s way cool.

Every moment of the movie is a shotgun blast of fast-paced action, dialogue, plot, and character development. It’s like a normal Batman movie put on fast-forward.

It starts with the Joker (Zack Galifianakis) once again threatening Gotham City. Oh, and he’s joined by Bane, Two Face, the Riddler, Cat Woman, the Penguin, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, and a bunch of other guys I’d never ever heard of before but that I’ve come to learn really have been Batman villains at some point.

(Condiment King? Seriously?) It is intense.

But just as quickly as these baddies come on the scene, Batman (Will Arnett) wipes them out. A few kicks here, a couple punches there, a dazzling array of explosions, jumps, flips, crashes, falls, etc., and it’s done. Batman is the hero once again. Everyone adores him.

But then just as quickly as the celebration erupts—which, really, is just an extension of the over-the-top action sequence—everything stops. Batman goes home, alone. He quietly changes his clothes, moseys on up to the kitchen, microwaves a plate of lobster thermidor that Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) left him in the fridge, and eats his dinner—alone, in silence.

Batman repeatedly insists that his greatest fear is snake clowns. But that’s just a cover. His greatest fear is new relationships—it is opening himself up to new bonds of affection, and thereby risking further loss and pain (remember, his parents died). Even the Joker is miffed at how Batman doesn’t consider their adversarial relationship special.

So when orphan Dick Grayson (Michael Cera), who becomes Robin, gets a very distracted Batman to agree to adopt him, Batman’s frail psychological constitution—a constitution that is masked by his gruff exterior, nine-pack abs, raspy voice, and, yes, a literal mask—is put at risk.

But, hey, Robin turns out to be all right. He does everything Batman tells him to do, and ends up being pretty good at the whole crime-fighting thing.

The only question is whether Batman—who cannot hide his approval

of Robin’s performance—can let Robin in, so to speak.

Indeed, that’s the big question. Batman is a solitary warrior. It’s in his DNA. But complete solitude isn’t good for anyone, even Batman—especially when you are trying to fight roughly 10,000 baddies at once. So Batman can go it alone, as he always has, and risk the complete destruction of Gotham (which, of course, is built on a couple of those flimsy LEGO panels, and so is primed to snap apart). Or Batman can work with his friends and newfound family, and risk losing them.

OK, there’s not a ton to “The LEGO Batman Movie.” What do you expect?

But there is still plenty to love. It is quick, witty and super funny. You knew when you read that Will Arnett is the voice of Batman and Michael Cera is the voice of Robin, you were already cracking up—they are perfect.

Although I say there’s not a ton to the movie, that’s not quite right.

Its relentless sendups of the Batman franchise—and superhero movies in general—are pretty sophisticated. Even the insanely fast pace of the movie scratches the action movie itch while also cleverly making you aware that it is, perhaps to an embarrassing extent, scratching that itch.

And, as I’ve said, the dialogue and

jokes (some of which are quite subtle) come at you with such blistering speed that a lot of this movie is more for adults. It’s hard to imagine kids getting it all. They will still enjoy it, of course—there is enough stimulation to guarantee that. It’s like a fine chocolate truffle. Kids won’t appreciate the complex flavors cascading over their undiscriminating palates, but they’ll still scarf it down.

There is also a nice little moral that is accessible to kids. What ends up being really noble about Batman (I won’t really ruin anything here, I promise), is not that he beats everyone up, or that he learns to let others into his life; it is rather that Batman recognized one of his flaws and made a change. That’s a rather simple message, but a good one.

Anyway, go see the movie. It’s great.

“The LEGO Batman Movie” is rated PG for rude humor and some action.

Family School rebuts report on lack of diversity

Carpinteria Family School representatives at the Feb. 28 Carpinteria Unified School district board of education meeting rebutted points in a report released last fall that affirmed the school has become an enclave of relative whiteness and wealth within the school district.

Fashioned in the school’s trademark tone of compassionate communication, CFS defended its position in the district as a progressive alternative to mainstream public education while detailing many steps it has taken to overcome its inclusivity problem. “the Family School is just one of many important solutions to education in Carpinteria. We (educate) through compassionate communication, creativity, local and global service projects, high level parental involvement, environmental awareness, student leadership and a prosperous, loving community that’s open to all,” said CFS second- and third-grade teacher Jan Silk.

Following complaints levied against the school district last spring, a third party investigation was conducted, and a report concluded that the district needed to correct the social and ethnic divide between CFS and Canalino School, which share the same campus. Some of the friction between the two schools is rooted in shared resources like the library and cafeteria and who pays for them. the discussion on race in schools created ill will on the campus. Silk cited an instance of CFS being referred to as “Caucasian Family School” as being particularly hurtful, and more so to the many ethnically diverse families at CFS. Silk said representatives of the school all wished to put the report behind them and move forward in a way that addresses concerns but also continues to respect the school’s important place within CuSd, much in the same way the new dual Language immersion program is an attractive alternative for many families.

Acting Superintendent Jamie persoon, who is also Canalino School principal and acting CFS principal, described the many steps that have been taken since the report to attempt to make the CFS population reflect the CUSD population. The report did not find any intentional effort to create a less diverse school population at CFS, but the responsibility fell to the school and school district to correct the issue through outreach and greater collaboration between Canalino and CFS in regard to shared resources and a more united campus culture. it is illegal for school districts to simply shuffle students between schools to engineer equally diverse populations. persoon gave the example of shared student assemblies to encourage integration between the schools and a costsharing system of billing CFS 12 percent for shared resources, since CFS comprises 12 percent of the campus population. efforts to increase diversity starting next school year include prioritizing entry to CFS for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. each year CFS enrolls 12 new kindergartners through a lottery, and in the past, siblings of CFS students were given priority entrance before the lottery, which left significantly fewer spots available in the lottery. the school district eliminated the sibling policy and will give spaces to students qualifying for free or reduced lunch priority placement in the school before a lottery would be used to fill any remaining spaces. in 2015-2016, the lottery for CFS in-

Co-president of parents for CFS Caroline haines took issue with the way the investigation was conducted. She said nobody from CFS was interviewed as part of the investigation other than former principal Leslie Gravitz, who had been released by the school district before the investigation. She also contested the part of the report that said CFS has fewer students in its classrooms than other elementary schools in the district, stating that in fact much of the time there are more students in CFS classrooms than the average. “the differences in demographics between school populations should not be seen as intentional or desirable. As a community we wholeheartedly believe that diversity is a value to our community,” haines said.

CFS will join with other district elementary schools on march 2 at a bilingual transitional kindergarten and kindergarten information night in order to present all schools equally. All sides acknowledged through the process of the complaint and report that CFS could be more proactive in informing Spanish speaking and lower income families about the school and the process of enrollment. the school was founded on principles of high parent involvement and had suggested it had policies of $500 annual contributions per student and mandatory classroom time in previous materials, but that language has since been eliminated, a move that could persuade families of lower socioeconomic status to feel more welcomed. “the CFS and Canalino communities are significantly divided, with the racial and socioeconomic disparity between the schools creating an unsustainable ‘us versus them’ mentality that models segregation for the students,” stated the report written by lawyer Felicita torres released last fall.

Supe search on track for April 8, 9 interviews

About six candidates for the vacant superintendent position will be interviewed on April 8 and 9. Recruiters hired by the district to conduct the search said applications have been coming in and the window is open through mid march. At that point, they will take a week to scoop the creme de la creme from the top of the stack and invite those candidates for in person interviews. the recruiters held multiple community meetings to gather public feedback about the school district and what qualities will be most attractive in a superintendent to lead the local public schools.

Local artist to teach European egg decorating

Just in time for Easter, Danuta M. Bennett will present a workshop in Traditional Egg Decorating at the Carpinteria Arts Center on Saturday, April 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Growing up in Poland, Bennett looked forward to the Easter season and the age-old tradition of egg engraving with her family. Under the guidance of her elders, she learned the basic techniques and practiced the craft as a seasonal hobby during her childhood and adolescence. “I can remember sitting at the table with my grandmother, mother and older sister, learning about the traditions and listening to the old stories,” Bennett recalls.

After immigrating to the United States in the 1990s, Bennett shared her Polish roots with new friends by teaching the Eastern European techniques of egg decorating.

Encouraged by their positive responses, she started to teach this intricate egg decorating craft through local programs. “Originally, I used the engraving technique that was traditional to the region where I grew up. Later, I incorporated other techniques, like the wax resistant method of egg decorating and painting, known from other regions of Europe. Now my designs range from traditional patterns and symbols, to the more modern,” explained Bennett. All materials for Bennett’s one-day workshop are included and participants will take home their beautifully decorated eggs. The price is $75 for CAC members and $82.50 for non-members. Victor Centina is a runner who came to the United States from Mexico City in 1989. He has worked for Gigavac for 11 years where he holds the position of Production Line Supervisor. He has three sons: Xavier, Victor and Alex.

What brought you to the United States?

I really came for the American Dream.

I have had 29 years of a wonderful adventure, especially here in Carpinteria. I fell in love with this town on the first day.

With the mountains on one side and the ocean on the other, it is such a prime location and you have to really appreciate it.

How did you connect with the Franklin Trail?

I’ve been a runner for a long time, since I was 16 years old. In Carpinteria, I would run in town, and out on the Bluffs and I always wondered how I could get up in the mountains. I did run other trails in Santa Barbara: Gibralter, Jesusita, Cold Springs, San Ysidro—there are eight of them. When the Phase I of the Franklin Trail opened, it was a total gift from heaven. Now we have our own trail open and we don’t even need to drive to get to it. Whether you hike or run, it is always enjoyable to go up the mountain and look back down on Carpinteria. Now our trail will soon be expanding to almost 8 miles at the end of Phase III, and beyond that the trail system is nearly endless.

In Mexico, we had to drive over two hours to get to a mountain area where we could run in the hills. It was so far away that we could only go once a month. With the Franklin Trail right in our backyard, I go every week.

How else have you been involved with the trail?

Last year I had the opportunity to help the Los Padres Forrest Association team on the backside of the Franklin Trail at Alder Creek. We worked for a day clearing and repairing the trail. It was such an honor to get to do that work for the trail.

I’ve always been respectful of the mountains. It is such a sacred place, always so quiet and beautiful. The opportunity to get away from civilization on your own two feet is an amazing experience. I want to thank all the people who have been involved in making this trail possible. I will help again when there is an opportunity.

One night last summer, when the moon was at its fullest, I took my son Vic and Kelly, the daughter of my girlfriend Rebecca Griffin, up the Franklin Trail for a moonlight hike. It was a great experience for all of us to see the stars and the lights of our city on such a beautiful night. In Spanish we say, “El silencio en las montañas es ensordecedor.” (The silence in the mountains is deafening.) That is the way it was that night.

This year on Sept. 17, I will again run the Island View Trail Race put on by Nancy Kaplan. The funds help support the trail. It is a 4- or 10-mile run, depending on which race you want to do.

Where do you get your motivation to run?

I think it is a gift, just part of being a runner. It is a very inexpensive sport. You just need your running shoes and you’re off. Sometimes I just don’t feel like running so I walk the trail. The main point is to be in nature, and to feel good about yourself. If I am lucky I might see a fox, a bald eagle or at night maybe an owl.

Sometimes I run with Rebecca, who new to running, yet mostly I run by myself. The longest I have run by myself is 6.7 miles up then back down. It took me about 3 hours. I went when the Phase III wasn’t really ready so the last part I had to walk. Yet to get to the top at about 3,000 feet is thrilling and then you have to come back on your own.

Running on the trail is like a mantra for me. I forget the world. When I’m back home, I feel rewarded and accomplished. It just makes me feel good. Whether you run or hike it is a great accomplishment. One day I will run up Romero Canyon, then across the top of the mountains to Carpinteria and down the Franklin Trail. I’m part of the Santa Barbara Trail Runners and some of them have done that run at night.

Do you have any concerns or fears?

There are several signs on the trail advising of the wildlife, so sometimes I wonder what I might see and it gives me a bit of adrenaline. I have seen bear tracks yet no bears or mountain lions. The mileage signs on the trail make it really easy to follow so you will never get lost.

You will always find you way back down the mountain.

What would you say to people who have never tried the Franklin Trail?

I encourage all my friends in the Santa Barbara Trail Runners to experience our trail.

I think the more the trail is used the more the wildlife will retreat into the backcountry so there will be less concern about encountering animals.

I invite everyone to enjoy this trail whether with you kids or by yourself to whatever level you can achieve as it is so rewarding. Please take care of the trail by carrying out anything you bring and be sure to clean up after your dogs. If you are a mountain biker, please use the bells so we can all hear you going up or down the mountain.

Take plenty of water with you and maybe some healthy snacks.

I appreciate the opportunity to express myself about the trail. It is really important that we all remember to enjoy the outdoors.

Post office says goodbye to Nevins

Kate Merrick’s grief over losing her daughter to cancer in 2013 launched her search for light in a time of darkness.

In 2013 Kate Merrick lived through every parent’s worst nightmare; she lost her 8-year-old daughter Daisy to cancer.

Four years and buckets of tears later, she is launching a book that chronicles her journey through utter darkness and back to joy. In “And Still She Laughs,” Merrick weaves the stories of resilient Biblical women with her own experiences to examine how hope can accompany heartache.

The Carpinteria native who founded Reality Church with husband Britt blogged her way through her daughter’s multi-year battle with cancer, keeping thousands of followers informed of the highs and lows of the little girl’s brave struggle. When Daisy died Merrick decided, “I’m not going to grieve publicly.

I just quit blogging and sat with the grief for a full two years.”

“I wrote it to heal myself, but knowing that while I healed myself I could help others,” Kate said.

In the pages of “And Still She Laughs,” Kate draws both tears and laughter. She writes openly and authentically about her devastation, allowing herself to be completely vulnerable in search of an answer to the question, “How could I ever be joyful again?”

Sang Nevins’ smiling face won’t greet Carpinteria Post Office patrons anymore.

sang nevins sold her last stamp on March 3. after over 21 years behind the counter at the Carpinteria post office, Sang is thrilled to retire and immerse herself in her hobbies: making music, dancing, writing poetry and repurposing secondhand clothes.

Getting to know customers has been a highlight of her time with USPS, Nevins said. Another perk is staying fit “on the clock,” by lifting heavy boxes and sorting mail.

Born in Korea, Nevins immigrated to the United States in 1977 and graduated from Hollywood High School a couple years later. Her career with the United Postal Service started in 1985 in San Pedro. She and her husband moved to Palm Desert for several years, but in 1996, they escaped the heat by relocating to Carpinteria.

Nevins’ true retirement begins in May, but thanks to three months of accrued vacation time, her stamp selling days have already come to a close.

Linden-Casitas Project Update: March 5 - 18

Linden Avenue

The Linden and Casitas Pass Project continues to bring major construction throughout Carpinteria this week.

Aimed at improving local circulation and freeway access in Carpinteria, the project includes new, wider overpasses at Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass Road, as well as an extension of Via Real across Carpinteria Creek to a new roundabout at Linden Avenue. The multi-year project is the third of four phases in Caltrans’ Highway 101 Widening project between Santa Barbara and Mussel Shoals. Five test piles have been driven into the ground alongside the Linden Avenue overpass and hydraulic testing equipment has been set up. Dynamic tests will verify that pile lengths suit soil strengths for the future Linden Avenue overcrossing. Equipment delivery and setup will require the occasional closure of the northbound Linden onramp between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., as well as from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays.

Crews will also begin construction of a temporary sidewalk at Linden Avenue and Ogan Road. Linden Avenue will have reversing traffic control as needed during daytime safety barrier placement near the freeway.

Casitas Pass Road

The southbound Highway 101 onramp at Casitas Pass Road will close as needed weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. to prepare the area for new bridge supports. Casitas Pass Road will have reversing traffic control near the freeway as needed for safety barrier placement during the day. Crews will clear vegetation near the overpass and in the area of the new Via Real connection in preparation for construction of the new bridge. The large pine tree near the northbound Highway 101 off-ramp at Casitas Pass Road will be removed.

The test pile equipment has been set up at the Linden Avenue onramp and testing has begun.

Via Real

Crews will close the end of Via Real between the Carpinteria Creek bike path and the Via El Rincon entrance to San Roque Mobile Home Park for vegetation removal in preparation for the Via Real connection. The bike path will remain open during this work, but will be closed later in the spring to enable bridge construction.

Highway 101

Crews will clear the shoulder areas between Franklin Creek and Carpinteria Creek to prepare for upcoming sound wall construction, drainage improvements, and a new bridge over Carpinteria Creek. The median guardrail will be removed in some areas to prepare for Stage 2 bridge construction. Crews will excavate dirt from around the construction site and move it to areas near Carpinteria

LIVING you want to upgrade, THE GREEN or looking to LIFE replace your old air ERIN MAKER It shouldn’t come as a surprise to readers of this column that I am passionate about all aspects of environmental stewardship. My family has always been forward thinking about the environment—their actions born out of necessity.

When you live in a rural area, you have to think about what you are going to do with everything you use: Trash service wasn’t available; all of our water came from springs on our property; and if the power went out it could be days before it was restored.

I know that people in many parts of the planet still live like that. And I feel lucky that my mother instilled a sense of responsibility about those things in me and my brother, and that eventually led me to where I am today. People often ask me what my title at work means, but I don’t have one clear answer. Working for a small agency where each person takes on many roles is something I enjoy.

When I first started taking over the energy efficiency role, all I really knew about energy efficiency was that you turn the light off when you leave a room and don’t keep your heat or air conditioning running all the time. Fast forward several years, and while I am still not an expert, I have learned more than I ever thought there was to know about energy storage and renewables, how to make cost effective upgrades to homes and businesses to help save money, and a host of other things, which brings me to an upcoming direct- install program for small businesses.

As part of my job, I participate in a local government partnership that includes the cities of Carpinteria, Goleta and Santa Barbara, the County of Santa Barbara and Southern California Edison and Southern California Gas utility companies. The South County Energy Efficiency Partnership, or SCEEP, is a venue for agencies to work with the utility companies to best serve municipal, residential and commercial customers. There are a number of incentive programs to help customers retrofit aging infrastructure while reducing their overall costs. One of these programs is known as the Direct Install Program for small commercial customers.

Direct Install is a Southern California Edison program that offers long-term energy savings to qualifying customers.

Edison has contracted with energy efficiency experts, who evaluate businesses free of charge to identify qualifying en-

conditioner with a newer version, or possibly with a more efficient evaporative cooler? There are rebates for those.

ergy savings. Working with the customer, Edison replaces outdated equipment with more efficient products, often at no cost to the customer. All work done is approved by the business prior to install. This program helps small business owners lower electricity costs by using less energy, with the added benefit of reducing their carbon footprint. The Direct Install program is coming to Carpinteria in the next month, so if you are interested in participating, please contact me.

There are additional programs available to both large and small commercial customers, as well as residents. Incentive programs are a great way to maximize your return on upgrades—in both gas and electrical equipment. Have a thermostat you want to upgrade, or looking to replace your old air conditioner with a newer version, or possibly with a more efficient evaporative cooler? There are rebates for those. Have a water heater you are looking to upgrade, or want to replace your aging washer and dryer with new, more efficient models? There are rebates for those as well.

Those are just a few of the programs available to customers, and I know that any help with the bottom line on any project makes a difference. Warriors mercy Lompoc

BY ALONZO OROZCO The Carpinteria High School softball team pummeled Lompoc on March 3 in the Warriors’ second game of the season and second game in the Third-Annual Central Coast Tourney (CCT). Having lost earlier to Cabrillo 10-8 in their tournament opener, the Warriors rebounded with a 13-3 bashing of the Braves that ended in the fifth inning thanks to the 10-run mercy rule.

Despite the lopsided Warrior victory, the Braves got on the scoreboard first with an RBI single by Kendal Martin. But Carpinteria would do some damage of its own in the bottom half of the inning.

Centerfielder Kayana Diaz got things rolling with a base hit to start the game.

A combination of walks and errors by the Braves, as well as some timely hitting by Carpinteria, sealed a 6-1 lead after the Warriors’ first at bat. Pitcher Amanda Blair drove in two runs with a single, and senior McKenzie Kephart knocked in two more with a double, accounting for the two key hits in the inning.

Blair settled down at the plate, striking out the next three Braves and taking the home team into the bottom of the second five runs ahead. Carpinteria’s bats once again came alive in the second, with seven more runs on six hits. Junior Raquel Cordero started the fireworks this time with a leadoff double down the left field line. An infield single by catcher Samantha Saenz drove in two more runs, as the Warriors built a 13-1 lead.

Carpinteria held Lompoc in check once again in the third, keeping the Braves off the scoreboard. “We played a lot more solid on defense than we did (in the loss to Cabrillo), (Blair) pitched better today, she was more in a groove,” said Warrior coach Henry Gonzales. The Braves added one more run in each the fourth and fifth innings, but a fly ball to Carpinteria right fielder Iliana Esquival in the latter inning would end the game.

five for the game. “We had 12 hits against Cabrillo, we had good at-bats, we made good contact. Again today, we did the same thing,” explained Gonzales. Kephart went three-for-four with two RBI, Cordero was three-for-four with two RBI also; and Blair went two-for-four, driving in two on the day.

“We have a lot of good experience, a lot of ability on this team,” said Gonzales. “… Anyone we play on the schedule, we’re going to go out and expect to win,” he added. The Warriors host Orcutt Academy on Thursday, March 9 as they continue their tour through the CCT, first pitch set for 3:30 p.m. in what looks to be a promising season.

February 28 - The Cate School boys volleyball team claimed a league win a 3-0 sweep of the Malibu Sharks. “Senior Chase McCaw and Parker Matthews worked together running a 6-2 offense and did a great job distributing the ball throughout the match,” said Ram coach Greg Novak. Freshman outside hitter Theo Mack led the team with 15 digs and 14 kills, and sophomore outside hitter Cullen Barber followed up with six kills. Middle blockers sophomore Carson Williams and senior Henry Dawson collected four kills. “Seniors Cooper Mayer and Nathan Martin steadied the team with solid serve-receive passing and defense,” explained Novak. Freshman Jackson Weinberger, sophomores Jojo Broussard, Raja Promige and Sebastian Richardson and senior Daniaal Saeed also played.

March 2 – The Cate School boys volleyball team in a league match against Carpinteria fell to the Warriors, 3-2. Freshman Theo Mack led the team with 19 kills, and sophomore Cullen Barber followed with nine kills. “The stellar passing (a 2.30 plus average) by Theo, Cullen and sophomore Cooper Mayer enabled the team to run an

Sophomore Carson Williams tallied four solo blocks and two assists. “Facing being swept, Cate came alive to capture sets three and four (25-23, 25-23), which pushed the match into a deciding fifth set,” said Novak. Carpinteria took the final set. The two teams will meet again during the second round of Tri-Valley League play.

Boys tennis

March 2 - The Cate School boys tennis team took on San Marcos at home, walking away with a 10-8 win. “The Rams jumped out to an early lead, sweeping the first round of doubles behind the strong play of the number-one doubles team of senior Christian Herman and junior Nicholas Hildebrandt, and number-two singles freshman Ethan Ha, pulling out a pair of 7-6 wins,” said Cate coach Jason Saltoun-Ebin.

The Cate number-two doubles team of senior Mason Mackall and junior Joseph Thomassen won its second match of the day to even the score at eight. Ha secured his second win of the day to give the Rams the lead; and his brother, senior Kevin Ha, won the match for the Rams in the final set. Cate is on break this week and starts Tri-Valley League play on March 23.

Baseball

March 2 - The Cate School baseball team opened up the season with a 9-3 loss at Bishop Diego. While the Cardinals are a league opponent, the game was scheduled as a non-league contest. Senior Joel Revo got the start for the Rams, pitching four innings while allowing just one hit and four runs. Sophomore Jack Deardorff came in to pitch in relief and was effective in his first two innings of the season. The Rams tallied five hits on the day with senior Dylan Ell collecting two, and seniors Bryce Huerta and Ed Lee each picking up one. Deardorff had the other hit on the day. “Junior Emily Burns had a standout game for the Rams, squeezing in a run and flashing some great leather on defense,” said Cate assistant Dave Soto.

Carpinteria High School Boys volleyball

March 1 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team beat Ventura High School 3-1 on the road. The Warriors were led by starting captain and outside hitter Mayerik Rodriguez who ended the night with 17 kills and eight digs.

“Captain and starting center Armando Soriano performed well and accumulated 26 assists,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. The Warriors league record is 0-1 and overall 1-1. “The Carpinteria varsity volleyball team, coming off a loss versus Bishop, played strong and aggressive throughout the whole match against the Ventura Cougars,” added Garcia.

March 2- The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team Warriors traveled up the road to face off against Cate, going the distance in a match to five for a 3-2 victory. Again the Warriors were led by starting captain and outside hitter Mayerik Rodriguez, who finished with 14 kills, two blocks and seven digs. Captain and starting setter Armando Soriano helped by adding four kills, three blocks and 22 assists. “Starting middle blocker Jonathan Flores stayed disciplined at the net and gained four blocks, eight kills,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. “Cate School let the Warriors know they weren’t going down without a fight,” he added.

Carpinteria now has a league record of 1-1 and 2-1 overall.

Boys golf

March 2 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team participated in a Frontier League match, hosted by Nordhoff at Soule Park in Ojai with Alex Cisneros finishing 11th to lead the Warriors, shooting a 103. Jojo Gonzalez took the next spot with a 104. James Irabon finished 19th, tallying a 110 with Jacob Durtche next in line at 111. Two fellow Carpinterians, Jacob Mata with a 114 finished in 25th place, while Gage Dinning shot a 119 to finish 29th. The Frontier League field will be back at Soule Park on Thursday, March 9, squaring off again with Villanova this time hosting the match.

March 7 – The Carpinteria High School girls softball team in their Frontier League opener beat Malibu, 17-0. Kayana Diaz, Mikayla Blair, Raquel Cordero, Amanda Blair and Tori Kelley all had three hits apiece to lead a 17-hit offensive attack. Amanda Blair pitched a nine-strikeout no hitter in the five inning mercy rule game. “The hitting highlight was Kayana Diaz’s Grand Slam in the fifth inning,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales. The Warriors overall record improves to 2-3, and 1-0 in league. Carpinteria plays Orcutt Academy in a Thursday, March 9 home game.

March 1- The Carpinteria High School baseball team picked up a 3-1 win over the Villanova Wildcats in its home opener at Calderwood Field. The Warriors entered the bottom of the sixth with the scored tied before Chase Mayer’s two-out single drove in Tony Vega and Juan Gomez with the go-ahead and eventual winning runs.

Noah Nuño earned the win for Carpinteria as he tossed two innings, giving up a run on three hits while striking out three and walking none. David Martinez struck out the side in the seventh to notch the save. Dominic Sturdivan contributed to the Warrior offense by collecting two hits, stealing two bases and scoring a run on Jose Carrillo’s two out single in the third inning. Mayer started the game on the mound, and he surrendered zero runs on zero hits while striking out two and walking one.

March 4 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team split a doubleheader at Santa Ynez, capturing the first game 1-0, and dropping the second 6-3. Sophomore lefty Chase Mayer, senior righty David Martinez and the Warrior defense held the Pirates scoreless in the first contest. Martinez’ solo homer in the sixth inning tallied the lone run and the win for the Warriors. Mayer tossed six innings, and surrendered just one hit while striking out five and walking three. Martinez notched his second save of the young season.

Carpinteria jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring two in the first on a walk to Dom Sturdivan followed by consecutive singles by Martinez, Jose Carrillo, Toby Spach and Tony Vega. The Pirates evened the score in the third, but the Warriors took the lead again in the fifth when Mayer led off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. He then moved to third on a groundout by Sturdivan and plated by Martinez’ sacrifice fly. Santa Ynez matched the Warriors with a run of its own, and jumped ahead for good when Cole Knightly’s two-out bases-loaded drive fell out of the reach of Carpinteria’s Michael Vazquez, resulting in three Pirate runs and a double for Knightly. “The Warriors are simply thankful and excited to be playing,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney. “To show maturity on the mound, discipline at the plate and savvy on defense this early is a good sign.”

Cate rakes in basketball honors

The Cate School boys basketball team came away with a bevy of team and individual honors from the 2016-17 Frontier League Season. The Rams finished third in the league with a 7-3 record, landing one win behind Thacher and Foothill Tech who shared the league title with identical 8-2 records. Cate guard Marko Pliso shared the MVP award with Foothill Tech guard Tyler-Regan Sutter. Coach of the Year honors were once again shared by Dean Prophet of Foothill Tech and Rams coach Andrew Gil. Cate forward Mason Mackall was named to First Team All-League, while another pair of Rams, Pierce Lundt and Patrick Armstrong, were named to the Second Team.

Honorable Mention went to guards Chase McCaw and Andy McHarg.

Tritons take down Oxnard

The U14 boys water polo team from Carpinteria Aquatics swam away with a 11-8 victory against Oxnard on March 4. After missing the first week of the season due to low numbers, the Tritons claimed the win thanks to Isaac Carrillo leading the way with the first seven goals of the game. His teammates Diesel Slade, Donovan Hart and Brandon Rogers pitched in goals to raise the Triton total to 11.

Track and Field

March 4 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team hosted the Rincon Races last weekend with Daniel Burquez breaking the Warrior and meet record with a distance of 43 feet, 7.75 inches in the triple jump. Burquez also won the long jump with a distance of 20 feet, 10 inches. Wyatt Stevenson was also a double winner in the 100 meters with a time of 11.73 seconds, and in the 200 meters with a time of 24.08.

The girls squad finished first in the meet with 106 points with Yvette Zamora winning the 200 at a time of 29.53. Gena Castillo won the 100m hurdles at 18.62, and Chloe Singer won the triple jump with a distance of 30 feet, 3.25 inches. Emily Donahue of Santa Ynez set a meet record in the 2400 meters with a time of 8:23.38.

March 4 – The Carpinteria High School girls softball team dropped two games in the Santa Ynez Tournament, losing the first game to Morro Bay, 6-2, and the second game to host Santa Ynez by a score of 8-0. The Warriors had nine hits and two runs combined throughout the day. “Though we played two quality teams, we did not play with the focus and execution needed to win games,” said Carpinteria coach

On Feb. 12 at approximately 12:05 p.m. two sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a supermarket on Casitas Pass Road on a call about a shoplifter. Employees noticed a man they had previously suspected of stealing cosmetics and alcohol, although they never made any reports to law enforcement about him. Employees said that the man did not go to the cosmetics or alcohol areas of the store on Feb 12, so they didn’t pay much attention to him. But an employee then saw the man leave the store with a full shopping cart through an open check-out aisle.

Employees did not know what the man stole, but thought there were possibly a lot of avocados in the cart. The man was seen walking to the north end of the shopping plaza, and may have entered a drugstore there. Deputies searched the surrounding area but didn’t find anyone matching the man’s description. He was said to have been wearing a beige overcoat, gray sweater and black pants. An employee of the supermarket said that he would review surveillance footage and provide the Sheriff’s Office with an inventory of the stolen items. The store desires full prosecution for the theft.

It ain’t glamping

On Feb. 25 at approximately 1:20 a.m. a sheriff’s deputy reported that he saw

two men standing beside a small sedan on Meadow View Lane near Linden Avenue. He called a second deputy to assist him. Stating that he had seen the vehicle in the same vicinity the previous night, the reporting deputy noted that, “Since the vehicle had all the windows covered from inside,” he “believed (the men) were sleeping in the vehicle overnight and thus illegally camping.”

One of the men told the deputy that he was on probation, which was confirmed with a records check. Both men consented to a search of their persons for narcotics and illegal contraband. Not finding any drugs or contraband on the men, the deputy asked the owner of the vehicle if he could search it. The deputy stated that the man consented to the search and said everything inside the vehicle belonged to him. The deputy found a plastic baggie with a small amount of crystal methamphetamine and a pipe with reside. He arrested the man and took him to Santa Barbara County Jail. The man left his keys and vehicle in the care of the other man who had been with him.

Schools get Seussical

Local schools celebrated the great Dr. Seuss’ birthday last week with crafting, reading and rhyming aplenty. Howard School students enjoyed Seussian hijinks complete with green eggs and ham, lots of reading along and a visit from some passing Loraxes on March 3. At Canalino School, March 2 found numerous visitors to classrooms who nurtured a love of literature by reading aloud from favorite Seuss books. Dr. Seuss was born theodor Seuss Geisel on March 2, 1904. His birthday coincides with National Education Association’s Read Across America Day.

Kindness is contagious at Aliso School

“I helped a dog find its owner,” is the message on one square of the quilt, and another says, “Cleaning up the community”—two examples of the sentiments expressed on the Kindness Quilt that librarian Julie Soto conceived of some time ago, and that Aliso School teachers and students made a reality this fall. Inspired by author Nancy Elizabeth Wallace’s 2006 book “The Kindness Quilt,” Aliso School students followed the instructions of the fictional teacher Mrs. Bloom, who wants her class to do and draw and share an act of kindness. the students’ quilt is on display in the main passageway of Aliso School.

Canalino ideas land on local menus

The menus at Corktree Cellars and Peebee and Jay’s will soon feature special items courtesy of the creative minds at Canalino School. Jessica Clark, owner of the two Carpinteria eateries, presented in Rachel Burrow’s and Gabriela Reyes’ fourth-grade classes during Career Day on Feb. 23, and after telling the students all about restaurant ownership, she asked them to come up with their own recipes in groups of four. the grand prize winners in each class will see their tasty brainstorms translated to the plate over the next month.

During the week of March 9, the “Super Sunday” will be served at Corktree, featuring the usual sundae ingredients as well as a candy spoon made from melted and molded sugar. Starting March 17, Corktree will feature the “Sugar Burrito,” for which the chefs’ instructions are as follows: “Get dough make it into a burrito shape. Cook it. when it’s done put chocolate ice cream in it. The end.”

Also that week, Peebee’s will serve the “4x4” sandwich—which contains nine ingredients held together by an umbrella toothpick. Over the next two weeks, Corktree will offer the “Dessert Pizza” and the “Reyes Pizza.”

Bike Club preps for Open Streets

Members of the Bike Club at Carpinteria Family and Canalino schools are gearing up to spread their love for cycling to the next generation of two-wheelers. During April 1’s Open Streets event, the Bike Club will give away several tyke-sized bikes that club members have cleaned and refurbished during their weekly meetings. CFS teacher LoriLee Collins, a dedicated cyclist, leads the afterschool club. With grant funding from Carpinteria Education Foundation, the club purchased nine bikes from Bicycle Bobs for members to learn cycling basics. Additionally, a Care for the Earth grant from the SBCEO will help purchase safety items and other necessary tools and gear. During Open Streets, the club will give away six bikes donated for refurbishing

During my time living in London, one of the most traditional British customs I had the good fortune to experience was an afternoon high tea at the famed Savoy Hotel London. Sitting below a breathtakingly beautiful glass dome while listening to a pianist play from a grand piano, I felt incredibly bourgeois and couldn’t contain my excitement. Trays of delicate finger tea sandwiches, fresh berry scones with clotted cream as well as seasonal cakes and pastries were laid out before me to enjoy. The elegant Thames Foyer Dome within the Savoy Hotel was decked out with polished silver trays and fresh springtime flowers as waiters dressed in pressed whites served us.

In speaking with the tea time Maître D’hôtel, he instructed me on the styles of tea that were a custom to British life.

The service decorum signified the style of tea. For instance, an afternoon tea was typically served between 4 and 6 p.m. each day and was traditionally served on lower couches and lounging chairs.

The menu of an afternoon tea consisted of a few tiers of tea sandwiches, scones, clotted cream and curd alongside two pots of brewed tea.

The afternoon high tea, which I was experiencing, was meant to be eaten on “high” chairs at the dinner table. High tea is a meal that the working class had at the end of their day with cold meats, pastries and often topped off with a beer. More posh is the Royale tea, which began with a glass of chilled champagne and ended with sherry. Above all the pomp and circumstance surrounding a tea, guest

Afternoon spring tea manners and comportment was of great importance to the tea ritual. Here are a few traditional tips if you’d like to hold a tea for your friends and family to enjoy.

Service Style: Tea is brewed in the kitchen area and then brought out to the table ready to be poured. Tea is then poured into a guest’s teacup by the hostess first, then sugar or thinly sliced lemon is added. (Milk and lemon are never served together as it will curdle quickly in a teacup.)

Tea Serving Method: Following the tea pour and addition of sugar, milk is then added. Always remember to follow the British tea superstition: “To put milk in your tea before sugar is to cross the path of love, perhaps never to marry.”

Stirring Etiquette: The spoon with which you stir your tea is never to be left in a cup, but rather rested upon the saucer behind your teacup to the right of the handle. When stirring your tea, you are not to hit the edges and cause a ringing noise. Rather gently stir in the middle of the teacup clockwise and when finished gently draw your spoon upon the cup edge to eliminate tea drippings.

Drinking: Use both hands to lift the cup and saucer together to drink from and never raise your pinkie.

Eating Etiquette: Dine on savory tea foods first, scones next and sweets last.

Scones with clotted cream and jam must be eaten neatly, split in half with a knife and then eaten with your fingers neatly in small bites. When eating savory selection and then pastries you are to use a fork and knife.

Above all else, never dunk your sweet scones or treats into your tea! Cheers to behaving properly and savoring the tradition of a posh afternoon tea together.

3/4 cups heavy cream 2 whole vanilla beans 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 2/3 cups granulated sugar 5 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 sticks (1/2 pound) unsalted butter, chilled 1 whole large egg

Glaze ingredients

1 whole vanilla bean 1/2 cup whole milk, plus more if needed 5 cups powdered sugar, sifted, plus more if needed Dash of salt

Process

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Split the vanilla beans in half lengthwise and scrape out all the vanilla bean inside.

Add the vanilla bean into the cream. Set aside for 15 minutes.

Sift together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut the cold butter into pats, and then use a pastry cutter or two knives to cut the butter into the flour. Keep going until the mixture resembles crumbs.

Mix the vanilla cream with the egg, and then combine with the flour mixture. Stir gently with a fork just until it comes together.

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and lightly press it together until it forms a rough rectangle. Use a rolling pin to roll into a rectangle about 12-by-7 inches and 1/2-to-3/4-inches thick. Use your hands to help with the forming if necessary. Then cut the rectangle into five symmetrical squares/ rectangles. Next, cut each square/ rectangle in half diagonally, to form two triangles. Transfer to a parchment or baking-mat-lined cookie sheet and bake for 18 minutes, removing from the oven just before they start to turn golden. Allow to cool for 15 minutes on the cookie sheet, and then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.

For the glaze: Split the vanilla bean in half lengthwise and scrape into the milk. Set aside for 15 minutes.

Mix the powdered sugar and salt with the vanilla milk, adding more powdered sugar or milk if necessary to get the right consistency. Stir or whisk until completely smooth.

One at a time, carefully dunk each cooled scone in the glaze, turning it over if necessary. Transfer to parchment paper or the cooling rack. Allow the glaze to set completely, about an hour. Enjoy!!

Kacey and Rose Brown of Carpinteria welcomed their new baby boy, Cannon James Brown, to the world on Dec. 4, 2016. Cannon was born 6 pounds, 7 ounces at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Maternal grandparents are Leigh and Terry Sparks of Carpinteria and Dennis Deacon of Sugar Land, Texas. Paternal grandparents are Robin and Karen Brown of Paso Robles, and paternal great-grandfather is Duane Brown of Paso Robles.

The following counts taken from Feb. 27 - March 5 were compiled from Carpinteria Seal Watch volunteer reports. Carpinteria harbor seal beach closure runs from Dec. 1 to June 1 each year. Seal Watch volunteers are still welcome to sign up by calling 684-2247.

Over 1,478 people were counted watching the harbor seals at the overlook. Visitors came from Canada, Russia, Germany, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Minnesota, Wyoming, Louisiana, Vermont, Alaska, Washington, Ohio, Colorado, Kansas, Nevada, Rhode Island and Idaho. A secondgrade class also visited.

Disturbances

Kite boarders scared the seals one day, and pier noise caused another disturbance.

Natural History Notes

Harbor seals have been observed in Carpinteria for over a century. Testimony before the City Council in 1988 by wildlife biologist Dana Seagars included his observation of counts “well over 200” at the rookery. The seals were not seen as often by residents because of disturbances from beach walkers.

The Carpinteria harbor seal rookery is located immediately east of Casitas Pier, between the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and Carpinteria State Beach. Please remember not to bring dogs, bicycles or loud voices to view the seals. Harbor seals, when disturbed, may flee and become separated from their pups.
