Placed to prevent damage and erosion from big winter surf and storm surges each fall after Thanksgiving, the sand berm goes up and is taken down by bulldozer (operated this year by Justin Wright of Mac Brown Excavating). The berm program began in the early 1980s and has served as a model for other cities, City of Carpinteria Director of Parks and Recreation Matt Roberts said. In its 30-plus years, only two incidents have caused major damage to structures along Sandyland Road, though numerous storms have flooded other coastal communities in that timeframe. The work takes approximately 40 hours and costs roughly $36,000. Unless late season storms threaten the beachfront, the berm is flattened out each March before the first grunion run, making room for blankets and umbrellas on “the world’s safest beach.”
