The young ladies tolerated the aquatic lesson—and even humored swim coach Morgan Youngs by posing for a photo—before returning to terrestrial life. Firefighters douse a Volkswagon camper van that ignited while having its propane tank filled.

Van fire erupts at gas station

When firefighters arrived at the Carpinteria Avenue 76 Station on the night of March 16, they discovered a Volkswagon camper van fully engulfed in flames. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but witnesses said that the van owner was attempting to fill her propane tank when it caught on fire. According to CarpinteriaSummerland Fire Protection District, crews protected the tank, attacked the fire and knocked it down quickly. A gas station employee was injured trying to fight the fire and was treated and transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Firefighters determined that the remaining contents of the van’s propane tank should be drained due to a leak in the tubing.

Fire department brings new trio aboard

The fire engines that wail through town contain three new firefighters at the ready for whatever emergency they might encounter. Connor Borum, Brian Lombardi and Taylor Barnett just completed nine weeks of training at Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District after several years on their individual career paths in the emergency response field. Borum, a firefighter/paramedic, spent the last three years working on ambulances for AMR. He also has five seasons of wildland firefighting under his belt with the U.S. Forest Service. Barnett worked fighting fires for Cal Fire, as a lifeguard for Santa Barbara County and as a hot shot at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Lombardi fought wildland fires for nine years with the U.S. Forest Service out of the Los Padres National Forest. All three new firefighters noted that working for the CSFPD is something of a dream come true.

Chamber announces Tuscany trip

Anyone interested in joining the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce on a guided tour of Tuscany, Italy from Nov. 7 to 15 should attend a preview meeting on Monday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m. in the Chamber Office Conference Room, 1056 Eugenia Place, Suite B. History, cuisine and culture of the Tuscan region will be sampled on the seven-night trip. Travelers will stay all seven nights in a hotel located in the charming town of Montecatini Terme. Included in the tour is an excursion to Florence with a visit to the city’s famed cathedral and a tour of the Academy Gallery to see Michelangelo’s statue of David. Travelers will enjoy day trips to the Tuscan cities of Siena, Pisa, Lucca and San Gimignano. A visit to a local winery for a tasting as well as a Tuscan cooking class is also included. An optional tour to Portofino and the Italian Riviera is also available.

Sunburst Winery owners plan to refurbish the existing sign and add outdoor seating to the building on the corner of Carpinteria Avenue and Eugenia Way. Remodel plans will be refined by the architect before being reviewed again by the ARB late this month.

A glass and metal roll-up door would replace the large front window. city Planner nick Bobroff reported that ArB members were generally supportive of the project but requested a few minor changes and additional information before sending the plans down the permitting pipeline to the Planning commission. Bobroff said that ArB will likely reconsider the project on March 30, and the Planning commission should review it in May. if all proceeds smoothly, Bobroff predicted that construction could begin by late summer.

Counting their losses

Deportation fears hit Latino businesses hard

By Melinda Burns On Thursday afternoons in Carpinteria, elena Hernández has watched the arts-and-crafts stalls next to the Farmers Market vanish one by one as business has dwindled. normally, Hernández said, her stall with piles of hand-embroidered, smocked and crocheted dresses is a mecca for mothers and daughters of all ages. some still come by to admire her handiwork, she said, but sales have plummeted from as much as $300 in a single afternoon to $40 now.

“Hispanic families are not buying,” said Hernández, who used to have a store in santa Barbara, and before that, cleaned houses. “it happened like magic after the election. it’s affecting them, and it’s affecting me.”

Business is sharply down at latino-owned mom-andpops on the south Coast—hair salons, auto shops, restaurants, clothing stores with Mexican imports, jewelry stores, herbal pharmacies, travel agencies and income tax services. Their owners place the blame squarely on President donald Trump and his efforts to speed up and expand the deportation of undocumented immigrants living in the u.s.

“This man scares everybody,” said María Pérez, a Bernie sanders supporter who owns a clothing store on Milpas street in santa Barbara. “He’s not my President.

He’s a devil and a crazy man. i love this country because it gave me the opportunity to study, to learn, to work and to be free. This man is destroying everything.”

Pérez, 85, stands behind the counter daily as she has for 35 years, but the customers do not come. “see how quiet it is?” she said on a recent weekday. “lots of working people came before to get a pair of boots or a pair of socks, but not anymore. They’re very afraid.” in heavily latino neighborhoods on santa Barbara’s eastside and Westside, a number of business owners are in shock, having lost half their clientele or more in the space of a few months. some of their customers are afraid to leave their homes, whether walking or driving, the owners say.

Others venture out to shop after dark. Many are saving their money in case they are deported. and it’s not only the undocumented who are fearful. “some people don’t want to go out on the street because they’re afraid they’ll be questioned, whether they’re legal or not,” said raúl Gil, owner of the el Zarape restaurant on san andres street and a director of the santa Barbara Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. about one in 10 residents of santa Barbara County is undocumented—the same ratio as in los angeles County, according to an analysis of u.s. Census data by Cause, an immigrant rights group on the Central Coast.

(iCe) has said it doesn’t conduct sweeps, checkpoints or raids that “target aliens indiscriminately.” The santa Barbara Police department and county sheriff’s department have repeatedly said they will not turn over undocumented residents to immigration agents unless they pose a serious threat to public safety.

To help quell rumors, Cause is urging immigrants to text alerT to 24587 for reliable information on iCe actions in santa Barbara and Ventura counties. immigration Hope and iMPOrTa, legal advocacy groups, are offering free weekly workshops in santa Barbara to educate residents about their rights and help them prepare a family plan in case of deportation.

Meanwhile, latino business owners say they are regularly fielding calls from customers, asking if they have seen a white iCe van in the vicinity.

“Just thinking about all this makes me nervous, and i was born here,” said Marisol Jacinto, the owner of Jami’s Hair studio on santa Barbara’s Westside. Only a couple of months ago, Jacinto said, she had 10 clients per day, and now she’s lucky if four show up.

On Milpas, the downtown of santa Barbara’s eastside, lucy Zamudio, owner of lucy’s Boutique, said sales had

dropped by more than half since the election, along with party rentals. no one is throwing parties anymore, she said. Zamudio said she had laid off an employee and was not sure how much longer she could keep her store open.

“People are afraid to spend the little they have because they don’t know what awaits them,” Zamudio said. “it’s so sad. i never imagined there would be so much racism in this country.” armando Vargas, an income tax preparer and insurance broker on Milpas, doesn’t know how long he can keep paying his $1,500 monthly rent or his assistant’s wages with so few customers. This is the time of year when he usually helps 100 clients per week with their tax forms, Vargas said, yet only 40 are coming in. Most of his clients are undocumented, he said, but they are required to pay taxes under an identification number issued to them by the internal revenue service. “look, there’s nobody, when generally there are a lot of people,” he said, gesturing at the rows of empty chairs. “We have seen incredible losses that we haven’t seen in other years, and we’re just at the beginning of all this. it’s affecting legal and non-legal residents and even citizens. nobody wins. We all lose.”

Julio lópez, the owner of Julio’s Business services on Milpas, said he had recently notarized power of attorney forms for 10 customers—undocumented parents who wanted to name a friend or family member to take care of their children, who are american citizens, should they be deported. in Carpinteria on a recent Thursday, a pregnant woman and her mother approached Hernández’ stall and exclaimed over the tiny dresses, each fancifully embroidered with ducks or bees or whales, and each with bloomers and a headband. The young woman lovingly fingered a $25 salmon-colored dress and said, “I think I would like this one.” But her mother intervened. “no, my daughter,” she said. “not with all that’s happening right now.”

Tune in to threat of sea level rise

Local resident, naturalist and Planning Commissioner John Callender recently posted the first of four videos concerning sea level rise and how it will affect our community in the future to his website CarpWithoutCars.org. Part one entitled “Vulnerability” deals with those neighborhoods in our community that will be the most at risk for expected sea level rise. This is a must see for the people that reside on the ocean side of the railroad tracks as you will be among the first to suffer from the effects of ever-rising sea levels. By suffer, I mean not only by increasing tidal surges, but also increased flood, home insurance, mortgage rates and many other financial hardships.

Financial and insurance actuaries are very well aware of the dangers of climate change and sea level rise and will not hesitate to increase or terminate your policies to protect themselves.

Although this is not an imminent danger, it is important for those living along the beachfront to start some longterm planning for the inevitable rising sea levels. So what can you do? The most important thing right now is to be informed and aware, which is why viewing these videos is so important. In part one, John

explains that he is not a scientist, but has been self-educating himself for over 20 years on the effects of climate change and sea level rise along the central coast.

I have seen some of these videos and I feel that he is immensely qualified to share this vital information, as you will see for yourself. Part two will deal with predictions, part three with responses and part four the next steps. All Carpinterians should view these videos as they will help all of us to prepare for an uncertain future.

Virginia Grace Butterfield, 94, passed away from causes related to pneumonia on March 4, 2017. Virginia was a longtime Santa Barbara resident who moved to Carpinteria, the Santa Barbara in 2003 from San Diego, where she was associate editor of San Diego magazine for 17 years.

Virginia was born in Brookline, Mass. in 1922 to Jeanne Dohen and Joseph J. Grace, a colonel in the army. The family was stationed in many cities including San Francisco and Chicago but her favorite posting was at Manila, the Phillipines, where she lived for three years as a teenager. She attended Mills College, received her B.A. from Bryn Mawr University and attended both Yale University, where she was one of the first female students to have a play produced, and Columbia University where she received her MFA. As a young writer in New York she worked for the Margaret Arlen Show on CBS radio. It was there that she met the love of her life, Richard Butterfield, a soon to be television executive whom she married in 1950. Ever creative, Virginia balanced motherhood with a part-time modeling career and became a proficient potter, selling much of her work in the Portland, Ore. area. After Richard’s untimely death in 1978, Virginia recreated herself as a magazine editor, working for Oregon, San Francisco, and finally San Diego magazines.

In San Diego she first took up painting, and upon moving to Santa Barbara, she became a successful local artist, creating many works of watercolor, oil, acrylics and mixed media. She was a member of the Santa Barbara Art Association, Goleta Art Association, Printmakers of Santa Barbara and Padres Watercolor Society.

Virginia is survived by her daughters, Catherine, Elizabeth, Darcy and Virginia, her son Richard, Jr., seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was the grandmother of Filiberto Hernandez, the Carpinteria teen who fell to his death on March 12. The family will be having a private ceremony to memorialize her death. Summerland teacher honored by GATE Council

Summerland Elementary School teacher Nichole Hughes was honored by the Tri-County GATE (Gifted And Talented Education) Council at the annual We Honor Our Own awards luncheon on March 9. Joining 20 honored educators and parents from the tri-Counties, Hughes was recognized for providing outstanding service to students in the GATE program.

Having instructed at Summerland School for only three years, Hughes has established herself as both an outstanding educator and an enthusiastic scholar.

She runs an engaging 4/5 combination class where she implements new ideas with her students, said Teresa Koontz, CUSD GATE Coordinator. “Whenever training opportunities such as confer-

ences for the California Association for the Gifted (CAG) or Tri-County GATE Council (TCGC) are offered, Ms. Hughes is the first to submit a request to attend.”

Koontz said.

Additionally, she received a $400 TCGC grant to implement the NGSS science projects in her classroom this year, and she was selected to give a presentation on the Santa Barbara Channel at the CAG Conference. Hughes also received a $500 TCGC scholarship to attend the annual conference in San Diego. Summerland Principal Michelle Fox stated, “Nichole’s enthusiasm is infectious and she certainly deserves recognition for her willingness to improve her skills as an educator, thereby impacting her students in a positive way.”

Community gets 4-1-1 on CUSD schools

About 100 residents gathered for the Carpinteria Unified School District Community meeting at Carpinteria High School on March 16. District Administrator in Charge Jamie persoon shared information on state standards, achievement data from the state testing from 2015-2016, and discussed the Local Control Accountability Plan.

Chief Business Officer Maureen Fitzgerald reviewed the district’s budget, noting that 83 percent of the budget is spent on people, including certificated salaries, classified staff salaries and management salaries. Benefit packages for employees amount to 27 percent of the district’s general fund budget. Fitzgerald showed the projected fund balances, which serve as reserves, over the next several years based on the current levels of spending. She explained that the district is in a structural deficit, spending down its reserves to less than 1 percent four years out. The state law requires districts to have 3 percent reserve in multi-year projections, and Carpinteria’s board policy as a Basic Aid funded district is to maintain 10 percent reserves to ensure it can make its payroll obligations. The board, Fitzgerald said, must make spending cuts in order to address the structural deficit and avoid fiscal insolvency.

Community members discussed the budget, district goals, achievement results, and standards in small groups after each section of the presentation. The achievement gap between white students, English Learners and socio-economically

disadvantaged students (those who qualify for free and reduced lunch) was addressed, and a community member asked what interventions were being provided to assist students achieving below grade level. Persoon described counseling services, reading intervention teachers at the elementary and middle schools, and Carpinteria High School Principal Gerardo Cornejo spoke about Extended Learning at CHS and a robust after school program with tutoring available.

Cornejo spoke about Santa Barbara City College’s College Promise Program, which ensures two years of free tuition, books and fees for area high school graduates. He also said that CHS continues to focus on assisting students to graduate high school with their A-G requirements in order to be eligible for a four-year college or university.

Cindy Abbott, Project Coordinator, and David Weniger, Director of Facilities, told the crowd about plans for each of the district’s school sites. They also reviewed the work planned for the coming summer, and what to expect in the next year of construction. The top priority of the Measure U initiative is to replace the district’s portable classrooms with Gen 7 modular classrooms, which will begin in a few months.

Clear the cars, make way for Open Streets

Over a mile of downtown Carpinteria roads will be completely car-less on Saturday, April 1—populated instead by bodies dancing, making street art, tai chi, bicycling, jazzercising and just standing around enjoying the company of friends and neighbors. Open Streets, a brand new concept for Carpinteria, will close portions of 8th Street, 9th Street and Linden Avenue to promote public health, active transportation and community by transforming streets into a public park for a day.

“Just about anything goes in the street—except cars,” said Kent Epperson of Traffic Solutions, which is organizing the event along with the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition and Global Good Impact.

Many months of planning have gone into the 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. event, and over 80 diverse free activities for people of all ages and abilities will take place along the 1-mile route. On Feb. 27, the Carpinteria City Council approved the Open Streets permit, which includes closure of three connected streets—Linden Avenue (from 9th Street to Carpinteria State Beach), 8th Street (eastbound from Linden Avenue to Palm Avenue), and 9th Street (westbound from Linden Avenue to Reynolds Avenue).

Outreach for the event has involved contacting residents along the closed streets to inform them that their cars cannot be parked on the roadside nor driven on the street during the eight-hour event.

Parking lots at Aliso School, Carpinteria Middle School and Carpinteria Children’s Project at Main will be open to the public starting at 7 p.m. on Friday for off-site parking.

Open Streets events are held in cities around the nation. The organizers of Carpinteria’s event have orchestrated Open Streets in Santa barbara for the past three years. Having gained much experience with the events along Cabrillo Boulevard, Epperson said, “We felt like it was time to share the magic.”

Invited by the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce to consider a local event, the Open Streets crew did its research and came to recognize that Carpinteria’s small beach town atmosphere would be a good fit for an event that emphasizes outdoor activities and community togetherness. “The event is really about the people themselves,” said Epperson.

The price tag for the event looks to be $25,000 to $30,000, most of which will be funded by Measure A monies dedicated to bike and pedestrian projects. Santa Barbara County and Yardi are also major

contributors. The logistics of closing 1 mile of streets account for much of the cost; advertising and a part-time event coordinator salary are other components.

Epperson said that for people in their middle age and older, the event can feel like turning back the hands of the clock to a time when childhood came with more freedom to bike and walk all over town. It’s uniquely uplifting, he said, to use roadways that are typically reserved for cars as recreational spaces. “People rediscover their city in a new way without all the cars,” he said.

The biggest challenge with an Open Streets event, Epperson said, is getting the word out about the event to reduce the shock and inconvenience of the road closures. The people who tend to complain on the day of the event are the ones who are not participating and are trying to navigate the road closures. Epperson said, “They get the downside without the upside.”

Jerry Estrada, General Manager of the Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD), updated the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning on the agency’s current activities. Estrada shared information regarding the recent installation of onboard cameras on all of MTD’s diesel buses as well as other equipment that will lead to the introduction of real-time passenger information applications. Turkey vultures are very commonly seen on the bluffs, and particularly during pupping season because inevitably there is some pup mortality. Many turkey vultures are sometimes seen roosting on the eucalyptus trees to the east in the Carpinteria Nature Preserve Park.

Measure U update: Carpinteria High School

Ninety million dollars is a lot of of money, no matter how one looks at it.

But the sizable Measure U budget for much-needed facilities upgrades across the seven campuses of Carpinteria Unified School District may not be sufficient to complete every project on the district’s Master Facilities Plan.

“Who’s to say that’s (the $90 million Measure U bond money) enough?” Cindy Abbott, Measure U Facilities Coordinator, said during a recent tour of the Carpinteria High School campus.

“Things come up that no one can anticipate,” David Weniger the district’s Director of Facilities and Operations added, citing an example in last year’s sidewalk replacement project at the Carpinteria High School that unexpectedly entailed additional costs in replacing aged waterlines.

With an annual inflation rate of 8 percent on construction costs and a fiveyear project timeline, the added specter of unanticipated complications makes completing every item on the district’s Master Facilities Plan a bit of a stretch.

For Carpinteria High School, significant cost overruns could come at the expense of a planned 300-seat auditorium slated to be built on the existing front lawn area of the school, behind the site of the future administration building.

“We expect to have enough money to complete the admin building—it is still a priority,” Abbott said. “What is yet to be determined is whether there will be funding to build the auditorium.” Both the admin and auditorium buildings were budgeted for in the initial $90 million Measure U bond. Additional state funds may be available, Abbott said, and she has begun the application process.

Rincon and Foothill high schools are set to move into the existing administration building on the CHS campus once the new admin building is completed, which is scheduled for summer 2019.

Carpinteria High School Principal Gerardo Cornejo looks forward to the improvements the Measure U projects will bring to his campus, particularly the new science wing and new auditorium.

Students at the high school currently perform plays and music recitals in the cafeteria without a stage or a curtain, and while Cornejo points out that the Theater Arts students and staff are very creative with set design and do great work with the resources they have, “When the curtain goes up (in the new auditorium) and the students are getting a standing ovation and the curtain goes down again, it will encourage more of them to continue in the arts.” Additionally, Cornejo said, “A ‘normal’ auditorium adds validity to what students are doing. The auditorium itself will be a resource that is available to the community.”

Cornejo, a 1988 CHS graduate, noted that he used the same lab equipment students are using today in the chemistry room. Three new Gen7 modular buildings, custom ordered for CHS, will form the new science wing with specific classrooms for study in biology, physics and chemistry, complete with two prep rooms on either end of the block. The buildings are scheduled for installation in summer 2018.

“I’m looking forward to the challenges” over the coming years of Measure U construction on campus, Cornejo said with enthusiasm. “It’s going to be a great opportunity for students to see different trades, and the process of implementing a big project.”

Existing classroom wings are budgeted to receive thorough upgrades in wireless infrastructure, lighting, wall treatments, flooring, heating and cooling systems, new paint and new teaching boards.

Portable buildings on the west side of the campus will be moved to the front of the school for interim classrooms while the new modular buildings are installed.

Students will also utilize the portable classroom buildings as renovations com-

mence on the existing classroom wings.

An additional four Gen7 modular buildings, each 30-feet by 32-feet, will serve as a computer lab. Another significant upgrade to the high school campus will be the renovation of the gym locker room facilities, which, like most of the school, date back to the mid 1960s. “It’s really going to be a complete ‘gut,’” Weniger said of the boys and girls locker rooms, “floors, walls, lockers.”

Although the final cost for the upgrades on each CUSD campus is impossible to precisely predict, careful study has nevertheless gone into formulating the Measure U Master Facilities Plan. With the possibility of additional state funding, Weniger and Abbott, along with students, teachers and administrators, hope to see the construction of all the projects—including the auditorium—on the Master Facilities Plan for Carpinteria High School.

Kris Buck paints plein air scenes in pastel with watercolor underpainting—a technique she will share in her one-day workshop.

Award-winning artist leads pastel workshop

Local artist Kris Buck will present a one-day Pastel Landscape Painting workshop at the Carpinteria Arts Center on Saturday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The awardwinning artist has had paintings juried into the International Association of Pastel Societies and the Pastel of America shows in New York City, and currently has work in Pastel 100 Magazine. “I really fell in love with pastels after learning about watercolor under-painting, which I will be demonstrating at the workshop,” Buck explained of the technique she uses. Participants will also learn about painting from photos and what to watch out for, as well as the movement of values throughout a painting. There will be time for a critique at the end of the day. Master teacher leads local workshop

Master improviser Dan O’Connor led a workshop for the Plaza Improv Players on March 18 at the Scout House, located at the Community Church. During the four-hour session, O’Connor, who is co-founder and Producing Artistic Director of the nationally recognized improvisational theater company Impro in Los Angeles, reviewed the basic tenets of improv while teaching skill-sharpening exercises and facilitating short scene work. Members of the Plaza Improv Players found O’Connor’s class particularly helpful as they are preparing for their next show at the Plaza Playhouse Theater on April 1. In anticipation of the annual Carpinteria Woman’s Club 2017 Student Art Contest, the Carpinteria Library will host three free watercolor classes for students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade. Led by artist Anne Fraser, students will work on one watercolor painting over three, two-hour classes in preparation for the Woman’s Club Art Contest. The run that Carpinteria kids, grown-ups and educators look forward to all year sprinted through town and across the bluffs on March 18. Orchard to Ocean saw everyone from wee ones to grannies moving their bodies for the good of local schools.

Orchestrated by Carpinteria Education Foundation, the annual event raises funds for Carpinteria Unified School District. Hundreds of athletes compete in the 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer races, and kiddos work their muscles in the 1-mile fun run.

Carpinteria boys volleyball sweeps Providence

The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team walked off the floor of Warrior Gym on March 16 with a three-game sweep of Providence from Santa Barbara.

The Warrior disposed of the Patriots in quick fashion 25-17, 25-16 and 25-15 in preparation for Tri-Valley League play, which begins this week.

Carpinteria fell behind early in game one, as a spike by Providence’s Samy Abbas put the visitors up 4-2. But with Jack Gay and Ben Medel blocking up front and Mayerick Rodriguez knocking down kills, the Warriors quickly turned the score around to take a 7-4 lead. “Our defense was on point; they were very aggressive with the communication,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. With Jonathan Flores crushing a huge spike

down the center of the floor, the home team went up 13-6. Providence got as close as 20-16, but when Pablo Ortega pushed the ball over the net through the Patriot front line, the Warriors captured the first game for a 1-0 lead.

In the second game, Carpinteria once again jumped out to a 13-6 lead with Garcia making a switch in the lineup.

“We brought in our second-string setter, Travis (Mead) … and, Armando (Soriano) our starting setter became a hitter,” explained the coach. “And for a second there was a little bit of confusion, but they regained control and it worked really well.” Garcia initially saw his team’s lead evaporate into a 15-15, but Carpinteria reclaimed the lead in short order. A spike by Ortega brought the Warriors to 24-16, where they sealed another victory.

With a 2-0 lead going into game three

of five potential games, Carpinteria emptied the bench, giving the coach an opportunity to get a good look at his roster. “We got everyone some play time, actually,” said Garcia. “It’s always fun when you can do that; it helps develop the players,” he added. In a back-andforth game with neither team able to put together a scoring run, the Warriors were able to pull out to a 17-11 lead with Gay serving. Angel Orozco catapulted a series of serves that closed out the match for the victory.

The win puts the Warriors at 5-2 overall and 3-2 in league. “It’s looking good.

It looks like Bishop (Diego) and Foothill Tech will be the teams to reckon with this year,” explained Garcia. “I think we have a good chance (to compete); we just have to focus and fire on all cylinders come game time, and pressure.”

The Warriors will be put to the test when they travel to play Malibu in league play Thursday, March 23. The first serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.

The Carpinteria Tritons Water Polo Club split their matches last week against Gold Coast Green with the boys scoring a 15-1 victory, and the girls absorbing a 5-0 loss, having to forfeit because of a lack of players. Isaac Carrillo led the boys with four goals, followed by Donovan Hart’s three and Mateo Handall’s two. “Over half of the water polo players on the team notched goals to their belt,” said Tritons coach Clifton Jons. March 16 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team in its Tri-Valley League opener at Valley Memorial Stadium competed in a three-team meet against St. Bonaventure and La Reina with the boys coming up short to St. Bonaventure by a score of 69-66. Meanwhile, the girls split against their foes, falling to La Reina 70-65, and besting St. Bonaventure, 72-63. Daniel Burquez won the long and triple jumps with jumps of 20 feet 11 inches and 42 feet, 11 inches, respectively for the boys. His triple jump mark broke a 23-year-old meet record set by Jim Lyon of Santa Barbara.

Wyatt Stevenson won the 100 and 200 in 11.54 and 23.69 seconds respectively.

Mikela Keefer won the 800, 1600 and 3200 with times of 2:42.00, 5:49.90 and 12:45.21 respectively; and Annalisa DeAlba won the shot put and discus with distances of 31 feet, 3 inches and 92 feet, 6 inches respectively for the girls.

March 16 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team dropped a 547-496 away match against Fillmore in its third Tri-Valley League contest of the year. Led by Colton Farrar’s 85, Fillmore had two players shoot under 100, the other being Jacob Saviers with a 91. Carpinteria was led by Jojo Gonzalez with a 97 and Gage Dinning with a 105. James Irabon finished third for the Warriors with a 109. Fillmore moves to 1-2 in league, while the Warriors fall to a 0-3 record.

March 15 – Carpinteria High School’s boys and girls teams swam away with wins, 99-41 and 89-51 respectively, over Grace Brethren. Coach Matt Organista reported that Junior Michael Leonard improved his breast stroke by 10 seconds, and the 200 medley Relay team of senior Sal Briceno, freshman Caleb Classen, junior Jordan Perez and senior Malek Mehai had a great performance. In the girls 50 yard freestyle, the top three spots went to Warriors: Jessica Cruz in first, Sadie Mead in second and Leilanie Silva in third. “The performance of the day came from freshman Alexis Persoon who beat her predicted 500 time by 40 seconds to almost make an automatic time for her 500 yard girls freestyle in a time of 5:56 in her 500 debut,” said Organista. Also impressive were both the Warriors’ Girls 200 freestyle relay teams, which edged out Grace Brethren for first and second places.

a tRaineR’s jouRnal Rob buRke It’s time for your 2017 resolution check: How’re you doing with meeting your goals?

Before you answer that question, let me tell you a bit about the psychology behind resolutions and then we can decide if a salvage squad needs to be called.

I remember when I was about 4- or 5-years-old listening to my mother on the phone. She was lamenting how another year had passed right along with her ability to step on the scale and see how much she weighed. For the past two months, she knew that she was somewhere over 220 pounds. However, the overage was a mystery because the scale, with one of those old fashioned dials maxed out at 220.

“My turn, my turn,” I said as I used my tiny little body to push my mom off the scale. I jumped up and down on that scale, with the force of a 5-year-old featherweight, trying to hit that 220 mark. With consternation, and a goal, I struggled to wrangle up the cat and i tried again. Ten Betadine swabs later, I learned that cats don’t like to be wrangled and especially while jumping vertically on a scale.

Now, of course, my mom was about as amused as Fluffy the cat. It was bad enough that she had no idea how much she really weighed, but my antics only reinforced the trauma of recognizing that with the passing of the New Year, so went that resolution to lose 20 pounds

by February.

Fast forward to today. We have better scales but the same issues with our ritualistic yearly proclamations. according to Psychology Today and researcher John Norcross and his colleagues who published their findings in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, approximately 50 percent of the population makes resolutions each New Year. The top ones are pretty familiar because they tend to be recurring on a yearly basis, and they include weight loss, exercise, stopping smoking, better money management and debt reduction.

Included in the same article, Timothy Pychyl, a professor of psychology at Carleton University in Canada, says that resolutions are a form of “cultural procrastination,” an effort to reinvent oneself. People make resolutions as a way of motivating themselves, he says. Pychyl argues that people aren’t ready to change their habits, particularly bad habits, and that accounts for the high failure rate.

Another reason, says Dr. Avya Sharma of the Canadian Obesity Network, is that

people set unrealistic goals and expectations in their resolutions.

This could explain why we give up so easily and eat that piece of chocolate cake or my favorite, as a friend told me: “I missed going to the gym tonight. Damn, that makes five years in a row.”

We want a quick fix, and when it doesn’t happen, we’re discouraged and motivation wanes or disappears altogether. Suddenly, in defiance, we damn the results of our efforts or lack thereof with chocolate cake and merlot. Your gym membership becomes a symbolic representation of your failure, but you’re not quite ready to give up yet because you got such a great deal on that membership.

If you can relate at all, it’s time to hit the re-set button. You think that you made a perfectly good resolution, so the problem must be with you, right? What if the problem was with your resolution?

Bottom line: if you’re going to make any commitment to a change in your life, you’re going to have to start by changing the behaviors that created the problem you’re trying to resolve.

But to do that is way beyond the scope of this little column, so instead I’m offering you some tips to rework your goals and make those commitments stick: 1. One resolution; one goal. Don’t try to overhaul your entire life in one fell swoop.

2. Set realistic, specific goals. Losing weight is not a specific goal. Losing 10 pounds in 90 days would add the specificity to keep you focused.

3. Don’t wait till New Year ’s Eve to make resolutions. Make it a yearlong process every day.

4. Take small steps. Many people quit because the goal is too big.

5. Have an accountability buddy, someone close to you that you have to report to.

6. Celebrate your success between milestones. Don›t wait for the goal to be finally completed.

7. Focus your thinking on new behaviors and thought patterns. You have to create new neural pathways in your brain to change habits. (This is a topic for another column.)

8. Focus on the present. What’s the one thing you can do today, right now, toward your goal?

9. Be mindful. Become physically, emotionally and mentally aware of your inner state as each external event happens moment-by-moment, rather than living in the past or future.

Now that we have our solid resolutions in check, let’s power on until we run out of resolutions to proclaim.

On March 7 at approximately 7 p.m. deputies responded to Star Pine Road on a report of a residential burglary. A woman had left her home that morning, and because her front door needed repair she’d left it unlocked. When she returned home that evening she discovered that both her and her son’s laptops had been stolen. The woman told the deputy that a neighbor of hers had seen a suspiciouslooking man on the street the week prior and that he often sees that man at a local car wash. It appears the suspect left a “short” skateboard at the scene with a phone number written on it, as the woman found the skateboard inside after the burglary. The deputy advised her that he would investigate to try and determine the owner of the skateboard and follow up with her.

When the deputy asked him where the beer was, the man said he chose to buy vodka instead and produced a half-empty bottle from his pocket. The woman signed a Citizen’s Arrest Form and the man was taken to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Plaza Theater approaches 89th anniversary Carpinteria history is rife with superlatives. The town boasted the world’s largest grapevine and still produces the world’s largest vat of guacamole every year. But a lesser known fact is that Carpinteria has the oldest, continuously operating movie theater between L.A. and San Francisco. Now Plaza Playhouse Theater, the movie house first opened as the Alcazar on April 28, 1928 barely a year after “talkies” had stunned the country and launched the movie business onto a whole new trajectory.

Henry J. Muller owned the newly constructed Alcazar building, investing $500,000 in the project. Builder Alex D’Alfonso claimed the Alcazar was “... as strong and sturdy as the Rock of Gibraltar.” The building had gone up just three years after a massive earthquake rocked the south coast of California in 1925, causing widespread destruction in Santa Barbara. D’Alfonso’s words were reassuring to many.

Carpinteria resident and theater manager Oliver Prickett was on hand to greet theatergoers on opening night. Prickett was an actor with an ongoing association with the Pasadena Playhouse, and had encouraged the establishment of the theater. Local growers had sent so many flowers they overflowed from the lobby onto the sidewalk. Telegrams of congratulations from executives of MG-M, Paramount and Christie Films had been sent to Prickett, some of which are displayed in the lobby today.

Patrons were treated to a live band and the premiere showing of the comedy “The Fifty-Fifty Girl.” Admission was a dollar and ten cents, quite a sum considering the usual price was around 25 cents.

On Saturday, April 29, at 6 p.m., the Plaza Playhouse Theater will mark its 89th anniversary with a celebration that includes a special reception and the screening of one of the all-time classic films, “Casablanca.” The nonprofit theater’s board chose “Casablanca” because Prickett has a small, non-speaking role in the film as a waiter at the Blue Parrot—a watering hole run by Sydney Greenstreet. “What better way for us to honor Ollie’s legacy than with his appearance in the film that critics and moviegoers alike have voted the most romantic movie of all time?” said Hanne Pitcock, Plaza Board President. “When Ollie comes on the screen, we want everyone to applaud and holler out!”

Peter Bie, curator of film and television programming for the theater, noted that the film will be seen in its original format,

The one-hour reception will include gin martinis, champagne and appetizers

by HEAT Culinary. Attendees are encouraged to dress the part for the evening as well.

Tickets for the event are $20 per person and may be purchased online at plazatheatercarpinteria.com and, if available, at the theater box office starting at 6 p.m. the night of the show.

Advertisements for Carpinteria’s new theater emphasized the building’s rock solid construction.

Breathing life into ground zero

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham The last time I crossed the Santa Ynez River in the Santa Barbara backcountry of the Los Padres National Forest was the spring of 2015. I rock-hopped my way over the dry, boulder-strewn river bottom, which was suffocating in dry chaparral. I was backpacking over to the wild and scenic Sisquoc River, which runs year-round.

There hadn’t been any flow of the seasonal Santa Ynez since 2010, and despite steady, consistent rainfall in late 2016 and early 2017 the Santa Ynez River remained relatively parched. The Santa Ynez feeds manmade Cachuma Lake, which feeds a huge swath of Santa Barbara County.

The lake has been on life support for some time, reaching an all-time low of 8 percent capacity this past fall and had only budged upward to 11 percent by mid-February 2017, while the rest of California enjoyed the soaking rains.

In some circles, Santa Barbara County, and especially the Santa Ynez Valley, has been dubbed “Ground Zero” for that persistent California drought. But come Feb. 17, the river sprang back to life.

“Some of us are going to kayak the Santa Ynez this weekend after the rain swells the river,” said Adam Sachs, an ocean kayak guide at the Channel Islands National Park for the Channel Islands Adventure Company. “You coming with us? We did it twice last week when the river was much lower, but with all the rain it should come way up.”

I was definitely up for it. After all, who knew when California would receive another wet winter like this one? I remember reading an article last fall in the Los Angeles Times stating California would experience a La Niña episode with little rainfall and dry conditions—so much for that. But in heavy rains such as these, it’s about seizing the moment and making the most of the deluge.

The chaparral-choked forest endured a drenching not seen since 2005 or maybe as far back as the last significant El Nino episode in 1997-‘98.

I’d always heard the Santa Ynez River needs a minimum of 3,000 cubic feet of water per second (cfs) for the seasonal runnel to be passable in a kayak. On Friday morning, Feb. 17, I received a text from Garrett Kababik, co-owner of the Paddle Sports Center in the Santa Barbara Harbor. He’d been keeping really close tabs on the river’s flow on the American Whitewater Gauge.

“It’s looking good right now,” said Kababik. “It’s at 3,400 cfs!”

Little did we know that was just the beginning for the Santa Ynez, which serpentines from the backside of the Santa Ynez Mountains within the Los Padres National Forest. That evening and heading into the early hours of Saturday, the river swelled to over 20,000 cfs, breaching its banks. I also heard back from Kababik late Friday night.

“Hey, early start tomorrow,” he said enthusiastically. “Let’s get this when it’s fresh.”

The plan was to meet Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the first gate closure within the forest. I was the first to arrive at the river and was blown away by the sound and rush of water and the flotsam of storm debris ripping downriver and piling up in the strainers. The flow had slowed to 10,000 cfs, but still the might of the river was foreign to me.

Guides from the Channel Islands National Park converged soon after, trading wave-battered sea caves for some fun Class 3 and 4 rapids on the muddy torrent. Geared up, we put in at the first road crossing beyond the White Rock Day Use

Area. Aside from a few collisions with river-strewn boulders and encounters with plenty of strainers, it was a backcountry run that won’t soon be forgotten. Better yet, following the deluge, Cachuma Lake rose 24 feet. It is still at only 44 percent capacity, but things are looking up.

Lyla Shae Kump was born on Jan. 25, 2017 to Karson Kump of Carpinteria and his wife Jenessa Tondevold Kump. The newborn weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 20 inches in length. She was born at the University of Michigan Hospital where Karson, a 2008 graduate of Carpinteria High School, is a doctoral candidate doing cancer research. Lyla’s paternal grandparents, Kary and Terri Kump, are residents of La Conchita. Her maternal grandparents, Barrie and Elaine Tondevold, reside in Utah.

WHERE THE HEART IS SARAH SMITH Getting prepared to qualify for a mortgage is the first step a buyer should take in the home purchasing process. Most often buyers come to me ready to start shopping for a home before they’re preapproved for a mortgage, but this necessary step can be completed long before you talk to an agent.

Typically, the amount a buyer is approved for will determine how much they have to spend on the purchase of their home. Their interest rate will dictate how much they will pay over the course of the mortgage (usually 15-30 years). For this reason preparing for a home mortgage can be the most important step in the home purchasing process.

Before you walk into a bank or contact a mortgage broker to get a pre-approval letter there are some important steps you can take to make sure your financial books are in order. The steps below can be crucial to secure a home loan and may even procure you a better interest rate.

Check your credit report and correct any mistakes you can. Raising your credit score just a few points can potentially save you a large amount of money! This step really needs to be done several months in advance to applying for a mortgage. If there are delinquent payments or mistakes on your credit report it can take significant time and energy to correct them. Even if you think you have “great” credit, don’t wait for a surprise.

Consider your income flow and assets. Before a bank lends to anyone they want to make sure that the borrowers can pay them back. Most lenders do not want your mortgage payment to exceed approximately 28 percent gross monthly income. Gross monthly income is the amount of your pay before taxes, savings plans and child support are taken out.

Lenders also want to see a steady stream of income and the same source of income for at least several months before applying for a loan.

Something many of my buyers have learned the hard way is the way a lender determines asset ownership or the down payment. Banks want to see those “seasoned funds” in your bank account for at least two months prior to applying for a loan. Lenders will often look at the last 60 days of statements to ensure the funds have been in your account. While it is possible to use other funds, such as gifts, additional paperwork will be required.

Eliminate any debts you can. If you have a student loan, car payment or reoccurring credit card debt, do your best to pay it off or minimize balances prior to applying for a mortgage. The total amount of debt payments per month are used in determining how much a bank will consider lending. The debts are used in a formula known as a debt to equity ratio, which refers to the percentage of

your gross monthly income that is taken up by debts. Many lenders say that the total of all your monthly debt payments shouldn’t exceed about 36 percent of your monthly gross income.

Prepare your paperwork. One of the most daunting tasks will be the paperwork. I like to remind my clients that the quicker they are able to get the information to a lender, the quicker they will get a response. Usually a hold up in the lending process can be avoided by having buyer’s paperwork readily available.

Below is a list of things most lenders will require: Copies of pay stubs for each applicant, reflecting a minimum of 30 days of income; copies of pension income payments or proof of other income sources; names/addresses of employers for two years; W-2s for two years; one to two years of tax returns; bank statements for two to three months including checking, savings and investment accounts; if selfemployed, year-to-date profit and loss statement, plus signed returns for last two years; and information on debts such as car loans, student loans and credit cards It is important to understand the difference between a pre-qualification letter and being pre-approved by a lender.

Once you have filled out a mortgage application the response from a lender with a pre-qualification letter can be fairly quick. This letter usually states the maximum amount a bank will lend.

Getting pre-approved is a more lengthy process in which the lender will verify income, verify employment, and verify all paperwork turned in.

A seller wants to see that a buyer has the capability to purchase the home they are offering to buy. In this competitive home buying market it is important to make your offer appear to be the best offer, which won’t happen without a preapproval letter.

Carpinterians Herb and Suzanne DeFriez, pictured at right, were surprised to discover that another couple on the tour they took to Japan last fall, Chuck and Lesly Champlin, pictured at left, had lived on Holly Avenue from 2005 to 2007 before moving to Santa Barbara and then Yuba City, Calif. The tour, offered through the University of California Alumni Association, gave an “insider’s view” of Japan, which included so many temple visits that they were hard to keep track of, Herb said. The extreme cleanliness of the country made a big impression on Herb, as did the friendliness of the Japanese people. “We make things big here (in the U.S.),” he commented, “Over there everything is small, but so well designed it doesn’t matter. Every square foot of land that isn’t built on has something growing—even a 10 by 30-foot ‘field’ has rice growing on it.”
