Luncheon grows girl power

For children to succeed they must break free of the boxes society puts them in. This was the message presented by Erica Ford, keynote speaker at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria’s annual Women of Inspiration luncheon on April 3.

Ford has spent 35 years working to curb violence in crime-stricken areas of New York City, and she encouraged the 300-person Carpinteria audience to support organizations like Girls Inc. that teach young people that stereotypes and prejudices do not define them.

National Scholarship; and Alitza Gonzalez, Carpinteria High School freshman and member of the Eureka Program, told the audience what Girls Inc. has meant in their lives.

Hussey joins Channelkeeper board

Carpinteria real estate agent Nancy Hussey recently added to her long resume by joining the Santa Barbara Channelkeeper Board of Directors. Hussey, a Santa Barbara native and an agent with Coldwell Banker, also currently sits on the Ethics Committee of the Santa Barbara Board of Realtors. Many of her hobbies, such as sailing and hiking, contribute to her passion for conservation and her interest in joining the board of Channelkeeper, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring the Santa Nancy Hussey Barbara Channel and its watersheds.

Council to consider marijuana and Styrofoam sales bans

At its Monday, April 10 meeting, the Carpinteria City Council will consider a moratorium on commercial marijuana activities as well as a ban on sale of Styrofoam products. City staff recommends that the council implement a temporary prohibition on commercial marijuana activities so that the city can study the potential effects of the new state law and enact appropriate local regulations in response. A Carpinteria ban on sales of polystyrene (Styrofoam) has been promoted by various area organizations, and the council will consider joining the other 19 municipalities in the state with such a ban. Carpinteria currently does not allow to-go foods to be packaged in polystyrene. Monday night’s meeting will also include a discussion of new fire codes, short-term vacation rental regulations, and a City Hall remodel project. County to hold Mental Health Services Act forums

The County of Santa Barbara, Department of Behavioral Wellness will host a series of Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) community stakeholder planning forums. The two South County meeting are scheduled for Monday, April 10, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and Tuesday, April 18 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Public Health Department Auditorium at 300 N. San Antonio Road in Santa Barbara. The community is invited to learn about the three year MHSA Plan Update, ask questions and share views. Antony MArchiAndo Summerland’s mural no longer looks like it was painted in the era that it depicts. The 120-foot long scene of old-time Summerland got some much needed TLC last weekend when a dozen volunteer artists—including First District Supervisor Das Williams—lent a hand in a refurbishing project overseen by decorative artist Stuart Brandt, his friend Bruce Daniels and the Summerland Citizens Association. Rehab on the post office parking lot mural, which was originally painted in 1983, started over the holidays, and reached a crescendo on April 1 when the community came out to the aid of the neglected art piece. “I think it’s a wonderful way to keep history alive by restoring the mural. I just want to thank the volunteers for coming out and painting,” said First District Supervisor Das Williams.

Measure U update: Carpinteria Middle School

BY CHRISTIAN BEAMISH Carpinteria Middle School, built in 1930 as the town’s high school and remodeled with bond money in 2000, has facilities that run the gamut from the gleaming halls and beautifully preserved classrooms of its main entrance building to the musty and damp portable classrooms placed on the campus’s east side in 1965.

The new gym, also built in 2000, with its soaring roof supported by steel tresses, would not be out of place on a major university campus, so impressive is the structure. Additionally, new (circa 2000) science classrooms are spacious and well lit, which, along with the sound-dampening panels in the library and the library’s computer wing, provide academic spaces that are worthy of the important work being done by both students and teachers at the middle school.

Yet the generally good condition of the front half of Carpinteria Middle School belies the aged facilities across much of the remaining campus. Of course, aging facilities are the reason the $90 million Measure U bond was passed in 2014. And as with the rest of the campus projects across the Carpinteria Unified School District, the significant remodels and upgrades at CMS have been prioritized and listed in phases of construction over the coming five years, in a roughly descending order of importance.

Thus far, the process of modernizing CUSD facilities has entailed meetings among school principals, staff and district planners, as well as architects and engineers, not only to determine what needs to happen at each school site, but also to determine construction priorities. For example, state-of-the-art voice evacuation and fire alarm systems are being installed district-wide over the summer, ahead of

modular building construction. At CMS, the existing portable classrooms are scheduled to be moved to the west side of the field this summer and used as interim classrooms while the new Gen7 modular buildings are installed early next year.

The multipurpose room, which was the original gym at CMS, has a warren of cramped rooms behind and below the gym floor with cracked skylights and peeling paint that currently serve as a band room and storage area. No part of the stage area in the original gym-turnedmultipurpose-room meets the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The plan for the building includes a complete interior overhaul with new bleachers and utilities that will meet ADA requirements.

But the labyrinthine system of school project funding has the work slated for the multipurpose room marked as an “alternate” project in the bidding process.

“Alternates,” give district planners flexibility in prioritizing facilities projects—if contractors’ bids come in low enough, the district can get to the “alternates” on the list of projects to be done. David Weniger, CUSD Director of Facilities and Operations, explained it this way: “Build me a school, and put in a tennis courts as an ‘alternate.’” Still, the renovation of the multipurpose room is scheduled for early 2019 as a “Phase 1” project.

For summer 2017, the existing art and shop building will get a new roof and be brought in line with ADA standards.

Original sewer lines near the existing portable buildings on the east side of the

campus run between Carpinteria Avenue and 8th Street, and must be replaced to clear the way for foundation work for the new modular buildings. A new school kitchen is also scheduled for Phase 1 construction, replacing the existing facility that was itself an add-on in the 1970s.

The total budget for the CMS projects is $9.9 million.

A number of additional projects are planned for CMS including free standing shade panels on two classroom wings in the main building, and an expansion of the outdoor eating area. The new kitchen facility may encroach upon the existing sewing room that is part of the life skills/home economics wing of the school. While the broad strokes of campus construction and upgrades have been determined, factors of budget and unforeseeable circumstances will affect the final outcome of Measure U work—not only at the middle school, but also at each campus in the district.

The complexity of the district-wide Measure U projects—each one a significant undertaking and planned across the next five years—naturally requires a team approach. CUSD is eligible for additional state funding for some of the scheduled projects, and a consultant has been hired to ensure that the district retains its eligibility. “It’s really important to get a team of consultants to work with the district,” Weniger said, as the specialized nature of school construction requires input from experts in each aspect of construction, including architects and engineers, planners, contractors and documentation specialists.

Open Streets raises beach neighborhood concerns

I am glad children had good times and that charity money was earned at Open Streets on April 1. However, I have a big concern over having my neighborhood almost blocked because of Linden being cut off from Carpinteria Avenue clear to the beach.

I live in the Silver Sands Mobile Home Village off of Ash Avenue and was forced to take Holly (west of Linden three blocks) to the railroad tracks and down to Linden. Then two narrow lanes were laid out for my neighborhood traffic to come or go between the City Market and the Spot Burger. The cone lanes would have had to be removed for a fire truck to be able to maneuver at that corner, had it become necessary. With the whole area south of the railroad tracks and west of Linden Avenue accessed solely on Linden Avenue, my neighbors and I are concerned about our safety if an emergency were to arise.

I object to our neighborhood being isolated in this manner so that an event can go clear to the beach. All streets on the east side of Linden were blocked off.

Trying to go home, I finally ended up at the State Beach and was then told I had to go to Holly as Linden was blocked at the beach. Why could not some of those blocks on the east side of Linden have been utilized for a few of the events?

I sincerely hope the City of Carpinteria will prevent this from happening in the future. Perhaps it is finally time to get an overpass or underpass of the railroad at Ash Avenue.

Biting the bullet and cutting the cable

the summerland shore f r a n d av i s I wanted out of the clutches of Cox, which pretty much has a monopoly in this area. Our bill for basic cable (no HBO, Showtime or anything at all extra) plus phone and internet had risen to more than $220 a month. I’d signed up for one of those bundle deals several years ago where you got all three services for a little over $100 a month. After a year, the price went up. Then up again. And again.

My son-in-law Albert, a tech-sector entrepreneur, pointed out that Cox was taking advantage of seniors, their inertia, their unwillingness to go to all the trouble of finding a new provider. They/we just groan and pay the mounting bills. All true. I’d been through it with Cox before with the last set-up, talking to numerous agents, arguing about the advertised price and what I would end up paying, which was more. It was an exercise in mounting fury and frustration.

For a couple of years I managed to contain my resentment, only occasionally bursting out with a Cox (expletive deleted). Goaded by Albert, I bit the bullet and did it. Called Cox, told a nice lady in Oklahoma that I’d seen an ad offering everything I had for only $89.99. Why couldn’t I, as an old and valued customer, get a deal like that? It was available only to new customers, she said. New suckers, I wanted to say. It’s like a graduated bait and switch con. Give you a little sugar for a year or two, then sock you with the big charges. By which time you’re hooked and helpless.

Or almost. I told the nice lady in Oklahoma that I would have to cut the cable.

(No loss for me; my husband likes his sports, but I hardly watch any TV at all, especially not the news which is pretty much all bad these days. Then there’s all you can get streaming.) The nice lady tried to talk me out of such a radical decision, offering a lower rate, though not nearly as low as the internet deal.

By then I was determined. Only phone and internet, I insisted, telling her I’d seen an online ad from Cox for a bundle of those two for just $29.99. She had to look through a bunch of stuff. There were a lot of pauses in all these interchanges while people had to look through stuff. She said she couldn’t find any such thing. Hey! It was on the internet!

I was told the charge for just phone and internet would be $106 a month, which I pointed out was even more than the $97.23 we were currently paying. It told her I was very disappointed in Cox. I told her it felt punitive, certainly not the thanks I should get for staying with them for a dozen years or more. She said we had to return the equipment, the receiver, remote, cord and cable the next day or

we’d get a rental charge of $11.42. So my husband schlepped those items into the Cox S.B. store the next day.

This all took an outrageous amount of time. The next step was to sign up with Direct TV, more time on the phone, more information, explanations, credit checks.

I turned down an offer for free HBO and Starz for three months on grounds that it would involve more phone interactions to get it cancelled after the free period.

And, as I said, I don’t watch those things anyway. Now we have a little dish on our roof—$26.99 a month for basic TV, rising to $53.99 after a year, at which time I plan to renegotiate.

Which left the question of Cox’s exorbitant charge of $106 for phone and internet. So I went with Frontier, $66.49 a month for the two. Our old phone number will be ported to the new “freedom phone,” which I’m suspicious of, but it hasn’t happened yet, so we’ll see. This, too, took much more of my time than I wanted to spend and conversations with several people in the states of Utah and Missouri.

I had several text interchanges with my esteemed son-in-law while I was going through this. My messages to him ran along the lines of “I hate this.” To which Albert replied, “Cox knows you hate this, and they are charging you $125 extra a month for hating it. That’s $1,500 this year. In two years it’s $3,000, and in three, it’s $4,500. Don’t you hate that??” He’s so sensible, my son-in-law. And supportive.

His last message reminded me that I was being preyed upon by companies like Cox. They know most people won’t go to the effort of changing, he said. And I’d be helping to change their behavior if they started seeing older people switching.

Making the switch was hard. I hated it, but who wants to be preyed upon?

Especially by big behemoths who count on your docility and ignorance to object.

One good thing: OMG, spring! Mustard yellow hills, wind blowing the smell of jasmine through windows, mockingbirds singing their little hearts out.

Over two weeks 3,254 people came to see the harbor seals, including visitors from Norway, Japan, Ukraine, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Mexico, Michigan, Alaska, Massachusetts, Missouri, Arizona, Oregon, Minnesota, Kentucky, Ohio, Washington, Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Maine, Hawaii, New York, Idaho, New Mexico, Colorado, Wisconsin, Alabama, Nebraska, Mississippi, Texas and Nevada.

Disturbances

The seals were frightened into the ocean by beachwalkers twice, by bluff-top viewers twice and once by a helicopter.

Natural History Notes

Unlike other local pinnipeds, like sea lions and elephant seals, harbor seals are easily frightened into the ocean, which is particularly threatening to the health of the population during pupping season. Harbor seal rookeries have been lost as a result of human disturbance; the rookery at Goleta Beach was lost when Ward Memorial highway was built, and the rookery at Elwood is reportedly lost or being lost as a result of the fact it is not protected from increasing human use of the beach near the Bacara Hotel. PS: Seal Watch volunteers are still needed!

Albertsons market on Casitas Pass Road will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 8 beginning at 9 a.m.

Tractors, Trucks and Trolleys, Oh My!

Parent groups from The Early Learning Center at Cate School and Canalino School are hosting a family event on Saturday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Canalino, 1480 Linden Ave, for children to explore trucks, construction vehicles and public safety equipment.

Relay for Life fundraiser

Relay For Life of Carpinteria is having a passport-style fundraiser: participants pick up a “passport” at one of the five participating shops on “The Row” at the west end of Carpinteria Avenue, and receive a stamp for each item purchased on Friday, April 7 from 5 to 7 p.m.

39th annual Kinderkirk Auction

Skate park benefit show

The Carpinteria Skate Foundation is hosting a punk rock show (appropriately enough as punk rock and skateboarding go together like peanut butter and jelly) with the legendary band Agent Orange, along with Skamikazie and The Grownups. “A Table for Sixty-Thousand” is a documentary by Teresa Singh and her husband, Professor Jasprit Singh, about the massive and successful community-building efforts of Langar in the Punjab region of India that breaks the barriers of “us versus them” in a centuries-old Sikh practice. Based on August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winning play of the same title, “Fences” tells the story of Troy Maxson (Denzell Washington) who makes his living as a sanitation worker in 1950s Pittsburgh. Bitter over his missed opportunity, Troy creates tension in his family when he squashes his son’s chance to meet a college football recruiter. ARB gives preliminary nod to Via Real hotel project

After several trips back to the drawing board, architects for a proposed 102-room hotel at 4110 Via real got the green light from the carpinteria Architectural review Board at its March 30 meeting. Planning Commission approval and final ARB approval are still required before the defunct church at the 2.6-acre site can be demolished and a Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriot constructed in its place.

The hotel design includes an L-shaped, two-story building with a 24,709 square foot footprint. Amenities would include an outdoor pool, fitness center, breakfast area and meeting room. As proposed, the design has a 109-space parking lot and 6-foot walls along the sides and rear perimeter of the property.

Project applicant RAM Hotels began the lengthy process for ARB approval in 2013, when the company proposed a pair of hotels on the single property. In the years since, the applicant has slimmed down the proposal to one hotel and gone through a series of redesigns to deliver on the ARB’s requests for a hotel that best reflects Carpinteria’s unique, small-town feel.

Board Chair Richard Johnson said that the ARB granted preliminary approval and recommended a review by the Planning Commission with a few design comments related to minor “odds and ends.”

barbara dunlap Even as she taught science to middle schoolers, Janey Cohen was actively involved in the volunteer world. At Crane School in Montecito, she helped students discover the volunteer work they wanted to do and took them into the community to achieve their goals.

When Cohen retired, she pursued her own dream. “I began pursuing my passion, which is art,” she said. She continued her interest in volunteering and now lends her time and talent to several nonprofit groups in Carpinteria. Here’s a closer look at Cohen’s busy life.

Q: You volunteer at the Carpinteria Arts Center. What are some of your activities?

A: At first, I got involved with the teen mural project. Then a parent asked me whether I would get involved at the middle school, too, so I go there on activity days to provide art as an option.

The school currently doesn’t have an art teacher, but it has a beautiful art room and art supplies. I create lessons using those supplies, and volunteers from the Arts Center help as well. The students are wonderful—they stay so focused for almost two hours at a time. I want to give them a shout out!

I’m on the programs committee at the Arts Center, too. We’ve added many new educational workshops for adults; we offer afterschool art programs for children; and we’re offering a full-day children’s program for summer. It’s so exciting how much it’s grown. We could really use more volunteers to help on the committee as our programs increase.

I’m also a trained host at the gallery, and I help with special events and ingatherings before art shows.

Q: What are some of your most memorable experiences vis-à-vis the Arts Center?

A: I have noticed several students who are really passionate about art. I encourage them to continue doing art at home and to take workshops. The Arts Center offers tuition assistance to make it possible for these incredible kids to pursue their talent.

Janey Cohen Q: You’re also an active member of the Friends of the Library events committee.

What does that entail?

A: A lot of people don’t know much about Friends of the Library activities—they only know about the bookstore. FOL membership dues help keep the library open six days a week. Everyone is welcome to join; membership starts at $35 a year.

FOL puts on events and fundraisers as well. I’ve helped with grocery raffle fundraisers to help buy computers for the library.

This year, FOL celebrates its 50th year, and they asked me to organize a juried art show in the bookstore with “The Book” as its theme. The show runs through May 19, and people can come buy the artwork.

Q: You donate time to other local organizations as well. What activities do you do?

A: Once a year, I volunteer to do an art lesson for members of the Woman’s Club. It’s really fun—the artist in them just comes out! Also, I’m active in the annual student art contest and the adopta-family program.

I help other Carpinteria groups in smaller ways, including the Festival of Trees, Relay for Life and Avocado Festival.

Q: What motivates you to volunteer?

A: I suspect you start volunteering because another volunteer asks you to join. Then you continue because of what you get out of it. You get new friendships and camaraderie, and you have fun. You also look around and see the benefits to the community.

Then you start asking other people to join you. It keeps building. I believe Carpinteria has a culture of volunteering. It’s what makes our small town click.

A full mile of local streets were made car-free in Carpinteria on April 1 when the first Open Streets came to town. The event coordinated by Traffic Solutions, Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition and Global Good Impact promoted public health, active transportation and community by transforming streets into a public park for a day. Portions of 8th Street, 9th Street and Linden Avenue were closed to cars and open to all sorts of people-powered activities between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Many of the offerings were free, and participants were treated to everything from a climbing wall, roller blading, a firefighter bootcamp, dance lessons and yoga to myriad other forms of movement. Some locals complained that the closure of streets to cars crippled traffic flow through Carpinteria. The event served as a trial, and the response of the community will play a role in whether a second Carpinteria Open Streets is planned.

Island Brewing Company’s third-annual Slow Bike Race saw a field of super-slow contenders captivate a crowd enthusiastically cheering for cyclists to downshift to the slowest crawl possible. Newcomer Jamie Reichlen took home the trophy this year, beating other impressively slow finalists Bruce O’Donnell and Justin Shrode.

Last year’s champ Anthony Vega was knocked out in the preliminary rounds with a time that qualified him for fourth place, when he needed to be in the top three to make the finals.

A dent in the supply?

On March 27 at approximately 9:15 p.m. deputies arrested a 24-year-old man in a church parking lot on Vallecito Road for possession of controlled substances with the intent to sell. Responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle, deputies saw a parked car in the lot and spoke to the two people inside. A deputy noticed that the woman in the passenger seat had dilated pupils and suspecting that she was under the influence of a controlled substance, he asked her to step out of the vehicle. The 25-year-old woman told the deputy that she was nervous, and when he asked her why she said that there were drugs in the car.

One of the deputies asked the man to step out of the vehicle and then asked if he could search him. “Yeah, I mean I don’t have anything,” the man reportedly told the deputy, but a search of his pockets revealed a glass pipe with “honey oil” residue. Upon further inspection, the deputy found crystal methamphetamine powder 1025 CASITAS PASS residue in the pipe. A folded pieceRD of foil with a useable amount of black tar heroin was found in the coin pocket of the man’s pants. Searching the man’s wallet, the deputy also found “multiple Suboxone film packets.”

As the deputy escorted the man to his patrol car, he informed him that bringing controlled substances into jail was a “felonious act.” As the man was sitting down into the back of the patrol vehicle he attempted to discard a large baggie with multiple containers on the ground, which the deputy did not initially see. Inside the

man’s car deputies found: a small glass container with meth residue, a glass meth pipe, a large meth smoking bong/pipe, a THC “wax kit,” two digital scales (one with suspected meth and heroin residue) and multiple baggies in various sizes. A deputy also found a baseball bat, and as there was no other sporting equipment in the man’s car, he was charged with possession of a billy club. “I know that often narcotics dealers arm themselves with weapons of various sorts to protect themselves during transactions, or to attack others,” the deputy noted.

“I have a job to do just like you,” the man said. The man also said he had a 5-year-

old child to support. “These statements acknowledged that he sold narcotics as a source of income,” the reporting deputy noted in his recommendation of charges to the district attorney.

The deputy told the woman that he couldn’t allow her to do that, and as he buckled her seatbelt in the back of the patrol car, she attempted to spit on him. At the county jail the woman screamed at the deputies to shut the door of the patrol car so she could urinate in it again. After refusing to submit to a breath test at the jail, deputies brought the woman to the Goleta substation to write a warrant to draw her blood. While waiting in an interview room, the woman slipped her handcuffs to the front of her body and removed one of her socks to wipe herself as she had defecated in the patrol car.

The Carpinteria High School track and field team ran away with first-place finishes for both the girls and boys teams when the school hosted its annual Spring Break Track Meet on March 29 against Cate, Bishop and Fillmore. CHS double winners include Wyatt Stevenson, who won the 100 and 200 meters; Terrell Richardson, who won the 300m hurdle and high jump; and Daniel Burquez, who was victorious in both the long jump and triple jump. Mikela Keefer won the 1600 and 3200 meter races, and Annalisa DeAlba topped the shotput and discus events.

CHS’s new inflatable softball batting cage will keep the girls swinging in all kinds of weather.

Softball team gets custom batting cage

The Carpinteria High School softball team received a new inflatable batting cage just before spring break. Craig Bilderback from the Warrior Class of 1986, owner of InMotionAir, built the cage. The new equipment addition allows the girls to work on batting when the weather is bad. “It will be an excellent opportunity to have more repetitions for hitting practices,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales. The cage will be set up between the varsity and JV fields, enabling both squads to use it. “We are thankful and appreciative to have received a valuable tool for our girls,” added Gonzales.

The Cate School baseball team took on the third ranked team in Division VII, Faith Baptist from the Heritage League, on March 28 in a non-league matchup at home. After rallying for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead, the Rams gave up four runs in the top of sixth, enabling the Contenders to walk away with a 9-6 victory. The loss drops Cate to 2-2 on the year, while the visitors from Canoga Park improved to 8-1.

Rams senior captain Joel Revo got the start on the mound, striking out the other side in the first inning. After holding Cate scoreless in the bottom half of the first, the Contenders got on the board in the second inning when Chris Larson’s single drove home Andrew Rasmussen for a 1-0 lead. Faith Baptist tacked on another run in the third when starting pitcher Mark Stupak showed his hitting prowess, knocking home Alfredo Cervantes for a 2-0 lead.

The Rams responded in the bottom half of the inning, beginning with a leadoff walk from Ethan Cassulo. Bryce Huerta then doubled to right, moving Burns to third. When Cate’s other senior captain Zach Ell’s high hopper was misplayed and leaked through the right side for an error, both Cate runners scored to tie the game at two. Following Ell’s steal of second, Pat Armstrong doubled to right center to give the Rams a 3-2 lead at the end of three.

But the Contenders got the bats going once more in the top half of the fourth, scoring three runs on four hits to recapture the lead, 5-3. The Rams battled back in the bottom of the fifth, as Jack Deardorff doubled home Revo and Huerta to tie the game at five. Ell then singled home Deardorff, knocking Stupak out of the game and putting the Rams back ahead 6-5 going into the sixth. “The one through four guys (in the batting order) are hitting the ball well …,” said Cate coach Ben Soto.

Unfortunately, for the Rams it all unraveled in the sixth. After striking out the first batter, Revo walked the next two; and was replaced by Edward Lee. An

“After a long, dedicated, storied and proud career of developing student-athletes, Carpinteria High School is officially announcing the retirement of Ben Hallock from the Warrior football program,” said Pat Cooney, Director of Athletics. Hallock coached at the school for two different tenures, taking over for John Hazelton in his most recent stint. In 1991, during Hallock’s first stint at the school, the Warriors captured their fifth CIF football title. In 1995, he also took Carpinteria to the CIF Finals.

Cate School Athletes of Girls Soccer Receives TCAA Honors the Week The Carpinteria High School and Cate School girls soccer teams received a mul-

titude of honors for the 2016-17 Tri-County Athletic Association (TCAA) season.

The Warriors won the Frontier League Title, while the Rams finished in sixth. Two Carpinteria players also received Most Valuable Player Awards: junior goalie Laura Valdez and junior defender Alejandra Garcia. Warriors coach Charles Bryant also was named Coach of the Year.

Named to First Team All-League were: junior forward Alejandra Alvarez and freshman midfielder Dayne Wagner of Carpinteria, along with Rams junior midfielder Isabela Montes de Oca and freshman Neema Mugofwa. March 24 - The Cate School boys tennis team continued its undefeated season today with a 10-8 victory over San luis Obispo in a non-league match. The Rams number-one singles player, senior Kevin Ha, defeated the Tigers number-one player, junior Zach Hilty, 7-5. Cate’s number-one doubles team (senior Christian Herman/ junior Nicholas Hildebrandt), number-two doubles (senior Mason Mackall/junior Joseph Thomassen), and number-two singles (freshman Ethan Ha), each also took two sets. “It was another huge team effort today with singles and doubles each winning five sets,” said Cate coach Jason Saltoun-Ebin.

March 30 – The Cate School boys tennis team continued its undefeated season with a 15-3 win at league rival Malibu. The Rams doubles teams, senior Christian Herman/ junior Nicholas Hildebrandt, senior Mason Mackall/junior Joseph Thomassen and junior Charlie Morris/sophomore Brad Gordon, won all nine doubles sets for the second consecutive match. “We are really lucky to have three strong doubles teams this season,” said Cate coach Jason Saltoun-Ebin. In singles, brothers senior Kevin Ha and freshman Ethan Ha also swept all three of their singles sets. The younger Ha, trailing in games, won three set points for a 7-5 win against Malibu’s number-one singles player, junior Bennet Cohen. The Rams are now 7-0 overall and 3-0 in league.

April 4 – The Cate School boys tennis team continued its unblemished record by going 8-0, 4-0 in league with a 14-4 road win against rival Thacher. The Rams swept all nine singles sets behind the play of brothers senior Kevin Ha and freshman Ethan Ha, and junior Nicholas Hildebrandt. In doubles, senior Christian Herman teamed up with sophomore Charles Xie for the first time this season picking up two wins.

Cate Number-three doubles, junior Charles Morris and sophomore Brad Gordon picked up two sets for the Rams. “I’m so proud of this team,” said Cate coach Jason Saltoun-Ebin. “The boys again showed that we are just a really deep team winning five of six sets in the number-three positions,” added Saltoun-Ebin.

March 28 – The Cate School boys volleyball team lost to Bishop Diego 3-0 on a Tuesday evening at home. Sophomore Sebastian Richardson made his debut as a setter. Senior Chase McCaw ran a 6-2 offense, while freshman Theo Mack led the team by passing a 2.53 percentage and captured 13 kills, which resulted in a 2.53 hitting percentage.

“Starting middles sophomore Carson Williams and senior Henry Dawson continue to improve and make their presence known with solid blocking,” said Rams coach Greg Novak. Cate’s league and overall record is 1-3. “It was in the third set that the Rams displayed their best game with strong defense and offense,” explained Novak.

March 25 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team opened its league season by beating Thacher 20-8 in Ojai. “Midfielders Brie Walker, Daphne McKeefry, Maddie Erikson and captain Katherine Grossman controlled the draw, 24 to five, which gave the team a huge offensive advantage and possession,” said Rams coach Renee Mack. The game balls went to both the freshmen Piper Brooks and Liza Borghesani. Borghesani had eight saves, while Grossman scored six goals. Brooks and Walker each scored four goals, and Erickson notched three.

March 27 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team hosted Aspen of Colorado, picking up a 9-4 win. Captain Katherine Grossman scored one goal near the end of the first half. “On the transition, sophomore Maddie Erickson made several key mid-field catches and runs,” said Rams coach Renee Mack. Erickson finished the day with five goals and several assists. Seniors Morgan Prinz, Summer Christenson and Eva Herman led the communication, slides, double teams and crashes on net,” said Mack. The team went to 4-0.

March 29 - The Cate School girls lacrosse team finished with a 19-4 win against Dunn School. “Captain Katherine Grossman continually boxed-out and ran through each draw to give us the possession,” said Rams coach Renee Mack. Eva Herman scored her first goal, and Margaux Vitols scored her first varsity goal. “Isabel Sorenson, Brynkly Meyer and Phoebe Hurwitz all played solid attack and helped on the defensive double teams,” said Mack. The game balls went to Hailey Panzer, who

Aparna Iyer, Lila Dressler, Marissa Strauss and Halie Straathof opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Straathof continued the momentum with her second win in the 50 freestyle, going one-two with teammate Flora Hamilton, while being the only individual of the meet to qualify with a CIF consideration time for division III. Ella Hendricks rounded out Cate’s success in the sprints by winning the 100 freestyle. Tilly Bates won the 500 freestyle, and Hendricks, Bates, Dressler, Hamilton and Straathof wrapped up their final wins of the meet in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. On the boys side, Julien Maes won both the 200 and 500 freestyles, while freshman Marcos Brasil won the 50 freestyle in his first ever race for the Rams. Maes, Brasil, Victor Vasquez and Kaiser Ke teamed up to win the 200 freestyle relay and qualify with a CIF consideration time.

March 29 – The Cate School swim team competed against Villanova on the Mesa with the girls losing the meet by 28 points and the boys by five. Halie Straathof took the first win of the girl’s side in her 50 freestyle, and second win in the 100 freestyle with a CIF qualifying time. The ladies also won the 200 freestyle relay with CIF consideration time, while Tilly Bates won a close race in the 500 freestyle.

The boys started off their meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay comprised of Charlie Corman, Kaiser Ke, Marcos Brasil and Teddy Wecker. Andre Pincott won the 100 butterfly, and shortly after Pincott, Marcos, Ke and Julien Maes won the 200 freestyle relay with a CIF consideration time. Victor Vasquez won the 100 backstroke, followed by Ke who won the 100 breaststroke. The boys finished off the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay.

March 31 – The Carpinteria High School softball team played a non-league game versus Pahranagat Valley from Nevada, winning by a score of 11-0. Amanda Blair of the Warriors pitched a five-inning mercy rule no-hitter, tallying six strikeouts.

Blair also collected three doubles at the plate. Mikayla Blair also had three hits with Iliana Esquival and Tori Kelley each getting two hits. The Warriors totaled 14 hits on the day.

April 4 – The Carpinteria High School softball team beat Santa Clara in a nonleague game, 4-2. After falling behind 2-0 to the Saints, Isabell Studt led off the third inning, reaching base on an error. Mikayla Blair then hit into a fielder’s choice and remained on first base. Next batter Tori Kelley’s sacrifice bunt moved Blair to second bringing up Raquel Cordero, who walked. Amanda Blair tripled, knocking in two runs. The Warriors scored runs in both the fourth and seventh to seal the victory, putting them at 10-5 overall and 1-1 in league.

April 4 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team defeated Santa Clara in a Frontier League match, 13-5. Numberone singles Jeremy Saito won all three of his sets without dropping a game. “Myles Morgan suffered a rolled ankle in the first game of his first set but toughed that set out and the following set to go 2-0 on the day,” said Warrior coach Charles Bryant. In doubles, Kirby Zapata/Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson went 3-0 and only dropped one game on the day. Cameron Gralewski/Esteban Zapata went 2-0, and their replacements, Steve Poulos/Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson, won their only set as well. “But I was really happy with JR Hajducko/Tony Ochoa who started slow, but quickly caught fire, winning their last two sets in comfortable fashion,” said Bryant.

Thinking inside the box

In the 1940s, dozens of young women spent their working days sorting and packing lemons at the local packinghouse. At that time lemon orchards covered Carpinteria Valley, and the avocado was just a glimmer in the valley’s eye. The business of lemons employed a significant portion of Carpinteria’s workforce.

Grace Moreno sorted and packed lemons at the Carpinteria Lemon Association when she was about 16 years old and lemons were the main crop in the valley. Years ago, she told Coastal View News about her days in the packinghouse, which was located adjacent to the railroad tracks between Walnut and Palm avenues. She worked alongside about two-dozen ladies who plucked like-sized lemons off a conveyor belt for boxing. While Moreno picked out the “60s,” other girls on the line were responsible for the “30s.”

Each piece of fruit was wrapped in tissue then placed in a box. According to Moreno, a single box held hundreds of lemons, and a single girl packed around eight or 10 boxes in an eight-hour shift. Though Moreno worked a full day on her feet, she said the job was not tiring. “I was young,” she explained.

Girl Scouts spring into spring with a day of fun activities.

There was plenty of serious outdoor education during the Cub Scout camp out, but also time for some silliness.

Five local Girl Scout troops held their annual egg hunt to kick off the next season of scouting on April 2 at Monte Vista Park. Older Girl Scouts led the younger ones in songs and games, including bunny hop, red light/green light and hot potato with a candy filled egg. Non Girl Scouts were invited to come and learn about all the fun of scouting.

members of Cub Scout pack 50 headed for the hills to spend their last few days of spring break camping at Nira in the San Rafael Wilderness. Scout mom Jessica Gray reported, “the weather was perfect, there was a ton of water in the creek and we were fed like kings by Webelos den leader thom main.” the boys enjoyed catching frogs, exploring the creek, and hanging out around the campfire. A few of the boys backpacked with their dads, leaving from Nira to spend a night at Lost Valley along the Manzana River. But in 1950s East London, “home” was often a euphemism for tiny flats and hovels. 1. Write a skeleton outline of your chapter, story or article

Chinese expat Feng Danlin is assigned to report on and expose the unlikely rise of a new Chinese novelist’s yet to be published, self-proclaimed blockbuster, which appears to be nothing more than the romanticized and fanciful story of a 9/11 widow. Danlin is widely admired by Chinese around the world for his exposés of corruption in China and by communist officials. Just another story for Danlin, except for the fact that the novelist is his ex-wife Haili, who dumped him for a rich American a few years prior. Danlin cannot begin to imagine the political alliances that Haili has made in order to ensure her dream. Nor can he believe that he might suffer any great harm by speaking the truth in his new home, the land of the free.

“Operation Mincemeat” by Ben Macintyre

Penned by Ben Macintyre, “Operation Mincemeat” is the true tale of a sardine fisherman who changed the course of World War II. In April 1943, the fisherman spotted the corpse of a British soldier floating in the sea off the coast of Spain, which was part of Operation Mincemeat, the most successful wartime deception ever attempted, and certainly the strangest. It hoodwinked the Nazi espionage chiefs, sent German troops hurtling in the wrong direction and saved thousands of lives by deploying a secret agent who was different from any spy before or since—he was dead. The Carpinteria Library Book Club will discuss “Operation Mincemeat” at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the Carpinteria Library, 5141 Carpinteria Ave. The club is open to anyone interested in reading the book and sharing ideas about its content.

Outlining isn’t for everyone, but for me, a bare bones outline of the chapter’s inciting incident, progressive complication, crisis, climax, and resolution acts as a kind of map for my writing process (or for nonfiction, the chapter’s problem, solution story, solution, and conclusion). I find that if I have a map of my chapter, I don’t get stuck as often.

Also, when I’m writing a book, I never try to write it all at once. I just take it one small chapter at a time.

Writing one chapter is hard enough.

Don’t overwhelm yourself by taking on a whole book at once.

2. Write your best bad version of your chapter

This is the hard part because I usually want to write a perfect chapter, not a bad one. Who wouldn’t, right?

But writing is iterative. You don’t

write a great book all at once. You write a bad draft, then rewrite until it’s a mediocre draft, then rewrite until it’s good, and finally polish until it’s great.

Take the pressure off yourself to write a perfect chapter. Instead, just get writing.

3. Play with it until it gets better

After I write my best bad version (reminding myself often to not worry that it’s not perfect and just write it), I read through it again.

Usually I’ll refer back to my outline, seeing if I’ve hit all the important points.

Sometimes, I’ll rewrite my outline to match how the writing has unfolded and other times I will rewrite the chapter to better match my outline.

Then I play with it. I read through and make changes as I go. I read through again making more changes. I give it to friends and family to see how they read it. I make more changes.

I keep messing with it either until it’s perfect or until I’m sick of it (but usually the latter).

I’m still amazed I’ve written seven books sometimes. I think back to those moments when I could have given up and am surprised I didn’t, that I kept struggling. It was luck—and stubbornness—that I ever figured out how to write a book.

But to finish a book, I also had to develop this: a willingness to be wrong, to write badly, to be humbled by my own lack of perfection.

Today, practice working through the struggle of your writing. Go back to something you’ve quit writing, whether an old book or a short story or a blog post or an article.
