Oil oozing on the Carpinteria Bluffs was investigated by experts and deemed a natural seep.

Experts conclude seep is natural

Oil seeping on the Carpinteria Bluffs has recently attracted attention for flowing far from its source on the nature preserve. Experts analyzed the seep last spring and determined that the leaking oil is natural and unrelated to an abandoned well nearby.

The well, called Kittie Bailard 1, was drilled by the Continental Oil Company in 1929 and abandoned shortly thereafter.

In 2012, the Kittie Bailard wellhead was capped after it was found to be leaking.

Comments sought for cannabis draft EIR

The County of Santa Barbara published the Draft Environmental Impact Report for the Cannabis Land Use Ordinance and Licensing Program and is seeking public comment on the newly released document, which is available at longrange.sbcountyplanning.org.

Firefighters pitch in for Forrest

The Carpinteria Summerland Firefighters Association has waded into the fight for little Forrest Holt’s health. Holt, a Carpinteria tyke battling a kidney condition, will benefit from the firefighters’ fundraising and awareness-raising efforts. The organization will host a booth at the upcoming Avocado Festival on 8th Street, where T-shirt and hat sales will benefit the Holt family. The firefighters have also placed boots for patrons to place donations in several businesses around town including Lucky Llama, Crushcakes and The Garden Market.

Carpinteria residents can now grow their own organic fruits and vegetables in the heart of downtown. The Carpinteria Garden Park, at 4855 5th Street, features 100 raised beds, fruit trees and a classroom and teaching kitchen for garden, nutrition and sustainability-based education. Garden beds are open to Carpinteria residents for a fee of $10 per month.

Gene Wanek, best known as Avo Man three days a year, adds levity to an intense round of guac tasting at the 2014 festival.

Avo Man retires When then Chamber of Commerce President Lynda Lang asked Gene Wanek in 2007 to don the inflatable suit of the Avofest mascot, a decade-long embodiment of Carpinteria’s most famous and beloved fruit began. “I’ve been called all kinds of things,” Wanek said, “Mr. Avocado, Avo Man, Avocado Guy and Gregg Carty calls me ‘Cali.’”

The job entails walking the Avofest in the avo suit, and surprisingly, other than the heat generated by the fan to keep the suit inflated, Wanek said there really was no downside to the volunteer position. But after 10 festivals, he’s “ready to let someone else have the fun.” Wanek spoke fondly of “making people, especially kids, smile and laugh—everyone wants their picture taken and it’s a really fun job.”

Wanek said that the only challenging aspect of being Avo Man was finding someone to help him out of his suit. Yet for all the fun mingling festival wide as a two-legged Hass, Wanek is turning over the suit, having given Avofest officials plenty of notice to find a replacement.

“My daughters are disappointed,” Wanek notes, but at 22- and 26-years-old respectively, the young women have their teenage years to remember as the time when their dad morphed into a thick-skinned, green-fleshed, pit-carrying fruit.

Although Wanek has given up the avo suit, he will still volunteer at Avofest, manning the tri tip booth with his fellow Lions Club members.

2017 bears little fruit

Low volume year for California avo harvest

likely owing to residual effects from the prolonged drought, the 2017 California avocado harvest yielded relatively little fruit. Despite the small harvest, prices paid to growers spiked, making it a record-setting year for the price per pound, according to rick shade, chairperson of the California avocado Commission and owner of Carpinteria’s shade Farm Management. The 2017 harvest was 215 million pounds— about half of the volume projected for 2018.

“It was the lowest production for a non-disaster year in over 30 years,” shade said. High winds and deep freeze are examples of weather that can damage avocado trees.

In typical higher-volume years, the price per pound for avocados averages about 90 cents to $1.05, but this year farmers were getting about $1.60. at each end of the season—the start of spring and the close of summer—fruit fetched over $2 a pound. California avocados get a premium price due to their quality and easier transportation compared to fruit grown in Mexico, Peru and Chile.

“We like to think we have the best crop in the world,” shade said.

The market for avocados in the United states has gone gangbusters over the last decade, so much so that foreign competition is not really competition but a way to sustain the presence of avocados in grocery stores from coast to coast. In all, 2.2 billion pounds of avocados will be consumed in the U.s. this year.

The domestic crop, which is almost wholly grown in California, made up only 10 percent of the volume consumed.

Carpinteria Valley produced just 5 to 6 million pounds this year but will likely hit 12 to 14 million next year, according to shade, who manages 20 local farms. according to Ken stanley, who manages the Calavo office in Carpinteria, avocado consumption is on the steepest rise of any type of produce in the U.s.

Consumption grows 15 to 20 percent a year. Calavo, the largest domestic avocado handler, picks and packs about 40 percent of avocados in California. stanley said production was so low in some areas that it was barely worth sending pickers out to collect the crop.

“We had growers who last year produced 120 bins and only got six this year,” stanley said.

The company had to scramble to find

enough avocados to fill the Carpinteria High school cheerleaders’ needs ahead of opening their World’s largest Vat of Guacamole at the California avocado Festival.

The season closed weeks ago—earlier than usual—so Calavo was essentially left going door-to-door looking for fruit.

By all accounts, last winter’s rainfall was great for the orchards and recharging the water supply. Wells could still use more water, but they received the beneficial one-two punch of being able to rest for a couple months of regular rains and to be recharged at the same time. local grower and California avocado Commissioner Bradley Miles said the fruit that’s already set on the trees is a strong indication that next year’s crop will rebound. The fruit takes nearly two years to fully mature, which explains why the 2017 crop was depleted by drought despite the wet winter.

The other lingering drought issue that appears to have subsided is high soil salinity. Without a good natural wash, salts build up in the soil and harm trees. leaves “burn,” starting with crispy tips. shade said older trees had a particularly tough time with the drought, as opposed to younger, more vigorous, trees. High temperatures also stressed the trees this year. although there’s no sure way to tell what the crop will be next year (projections for this year were much higher than the actual yield), shade said that barring the unpredictable wrath of Mother nature, “California will be back in 2018!”

Keith Julius Puccinelli 1950 –2017

The extraordinary artist and designer, Keith Puccinelli, age 67, of Santa Barbara, Calif., died unexpectedly on the evening of Sept. 18, at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. He had collapsed at home and did not recover. A number of ongoing health issues over the past years had left him fragile. His friends Meg Linton and Dane Goodman were at the hospital when he passed. He was not in pain and his transition happened quickly.

Keith was born May 5, 1950 in San Jose, Calif. to Julius and Irene Puccinelli.

Memories of his early family life with his parents and sister Jessica in the Willow Glen neighborhood and the natural beauty and orchard fields of the surrounding area, pre-Silicon Valley, were significant to him and often played out in his artworks.

After graduating from Willow Glen High School, he attended San José State University in 1973 receiving a B.A. in Art degree, with an emphasis in sculpture.

Later that year he moved to Santa Barbara. For the next decade he worked at various careers including restaurant manager and production textile screen printer.

In 1983 he opened Puccinelli Design and received national and international recog84-4428nition for his work as a graphic designer, illustrator, copywriter and art director.

Many of his designs and branded logos remain in use today. He made all the early posters for the California Avocado Festival. This year’s festival, the 31st, will be dedicated to Keith and his wife Fran who was a driving force behind the festival.

He served as the president of the Santa Barbara Ad Club as well as being on the board of the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum.

I support the innovative, creative and thoroughly modern home project proposed for 5157 8th Street.

Everyone, it seems, is now an architectural critic. Critics want bungalow or arts and crafts-style buildings that mimic those of the early part of the last century.

We are in a new century: ironically, this is a modern-day arts and crafts building that respects natural materials and a hand-built aesthetic.

I am not an architectural critic per se, but a contributing editor and writer to national and regional shelter magazines (California Homes for 15 years, currently Traditional Homes magazine, with 2.5 million readers). In addition to profiling architects, well-designed houses and interior design projects, I have toured many beautiful houses over the decades.

The 8th Street house is one that would not only be publication worthy, but also add to the character and charm of our wonderful, unique town. Additionally, it is a “green” project.

I am opposed to cookie cutter design— how boring would it be if our entire community looked the same? While there certainly are houses I do not care for, this is not one of them. In fact, I often admire a contemporary structure that is similar in feeling—on 7th Street next door to Whimsy Antiques.

If Carpinterians only want bungalows in a certain area of downtown, then why not create a bungalow district as Santa Barbara as done on the Eastside?

I can’t wait to see the finished project, and I bet that Donnie Nair will be the first Carpinterian to knock at the door to see if the owners would open their home to Carpinteria Beautiful’s Home and Garden Tour.

Please respect the decisions made by the Carpinteria Architectural Review Board, and as someone aptly posted online in Nextdoor: “For God’s sake, let these people build their home.” Approve this project, City Council!

many surprising points of innovation in small-town communities. He discovered that local politics in most cities was good and that “things are getting better.” He also concluded that successful small cities have discovered a “return of the downtown” and are investing in its identity—natural, historical and artistic.

If you would like to hear Fallow’s recent talk, Google James Fallow’s “It’s Happening Here: American Renewal, Ingenuity, and Innovation.”

Carpinteria is a great example of small town successes built on its “nature, history and art” with the interest, energy and volunteerism of its citizens.

With this in mind, the City Council should take a second look at the design of the house project proposed for 5157 8th Street.

This site is near old bungalows and “rebuilds” that have design elements supporting an historical Carpinteria feel. The 8th Street project in the rendering considered by City Council lacks these elements in its design and should be reconsidered.

We are against the project as proposed and support the appeal.

Another project—the proposed small boutique hotel at the railroad tracks at 499 Linden Ave.—definitely has historical elements and themes in its design and intended use. It will enhance and add to the train depot and community garden area and become another centerpiece of our downtown. It will be a low-impact destination for train and other travelers, while also providing a “walkable” ocean-view dining and gathering site for locals. In addition, private funding would have to follow community goals in its design, construction and operation. We approve of the proposal as it continues to be considered.

Playground removal was a bad choice

I was shocked and disappointed in the City of Carpinteria to learn that they voted to remove the playground from Heath Adobe Park. The justification I’ve read seems to have two points: First, there is not enough room for safely keeping the historic trees, a ball play area and the playground. Really? All three have existed in the park for over 45 years. I believe that if there was a sincere desire to accommodate all three, the City could find a way. Certainly removing the oak trees from the plan would open more space for ball play. Oak trees are not appropriate trees for a park anyway. Since the object of adding the oak trees seems to be to eliminate grass, the trees would simply block views and take up open space. In my opinion, an oak woodland is not an acceptable use of a city park.

The little park on Sterling has already succumbed. At least they were allowed to keep their playground, but they have no open space for activity. The second reason I’ve read is money. Are the children worth it? Should they play in street or just climb oak trees? If there is money for pet projects and cost studies, there should be money to maintain a small playground that has been here for so long.

New not necessarily a negative

I am writing to support the owners of the property at 5157 8th Street. They are proposing to replace the existing home with a mid-century modern home.

I have read all the documents relating to their proposal and the appeal from the condo neighbor next door.

This block is not all bungalows, it is a mix of two-story condo buildings and homes of other styles. This proposed home is well designed and has the approval of the Planning Commission and the ARB. It meets all zoning laws and other regulations. It is a block away from the modern looking Smart & Final building, the liquor store and the other Hickey buildings.

I urge the City Council to be fair and reasonable and to not be swayed by nostalgia and mean-spirited accusations of “Malibuization.”

I have never met the owners so this plea is not personal.

Dreadlocks northbound on Carp Ave.

No toking on the cell block

On Sept. 26 at approximately 2:30 a.m. a deputy patroling Via Real noticed two men standing by the passenger side of a vehicle in the parking lot of a market. The reporting deputy noted that the business was closed. As the deputy approached the men, he stated that they moved away from the vehicle they had been standing by. When the deputy asked the two men why they were loitering, one of them said that he lived in one of the condominiums next door, and the other man stated that he was waiting for a ride. The deputy asked for the men’s IDs, and one of them provided one and the other gave the deputy his name, saying that he did not have his ID with him. A record’s check revealed that the man with no ID had a warrant for his arrest.

The deputy searched the man’s backpack and found two marijuana pipes, a metal grinder and less than one ounce of marijuana in a glass jar. The deputy advised the man that his marijuana and associated implements would be booked for safekeeping, since the jail would not allow those items in the facility. The man was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail, and the man who had been standing with him was released “and walked 20  the Thursday, August 31, 2017 home,” deputy noted.

Best friends and drunk

On Sept. 24 at approximately 2:14 a.m. a deputy driving northbound on Linden Avenue saw two women yelling at each other in the parking lot of a drugstore. The deputy pulled his patrol car alongside the arguing women who were “waving their hands in the air,” the deputy noted. Upon exiting his vehicle, the deputy stated that he “could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from their persons,” referring to the women. When the deputy asked the women why they were arguing one of them reportedly responded, “Best friends and drunk.” A man who was with them stepped forward and said that he was sober and would escort them home.

The deputy told the women that if they continued to fight he would take legal action for their safety. As the deputy drove away he saw the two women begin screaming at each other once again and noted that it had not been 15 seconds since he told them to stop fighting. He also reported that they appeared to be grabbing each other’s arms to keep from falling to the pavement. The deputy arrested both women and they were transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

A warrant

On Sept. 25 at approximately 1 p.m. deputies were dispatched to a Mexican restaurant on Carpinteria Avenue on a report of a suspicious subject drinking alcohol. When deputies responded, dispatch informed them that the subject was a white man in his 30s with dreadlocks, last seen heading north on Carpinteria Avenue. Deputies found a man matching the description on Carpinteria Avenue, and when they informed the man why they were stopping him he said he was retrieving his bicycle and leaving town.

The man had an unopened can of beer in the back pocket of his pants. The man consented to a search of his person, and deputies found a broken glass bulb pipe and a folded dollar bill with a white crystal-like substance inside. The man reportedly said that the pipe was for smoking tobacco and that he had found the dollar bill at an abandoned transient camp.

The man was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

On Sept. 27 at approximately 8:30 a.m. two deputies went to a residence on Malibu Drive to conduct a misdemeanor warrant arrest for a 20-year-old man. The reporting deputy stated that he had had previous contacts with the man at the same address on earlier occasions. When deputies knocked at the front door and announced “Sheriff’s Office,” no one answered for several minutes until a woman came to the door. She told the deputies that the young man they were looking for was in his room, and she then led them to his door. Deputies could hear movement in the room, but no one inside would answer. One of the deputies went to the back of the residence and discovered the young man with the warrant climbing out of the bedroom window and arrested him without incident.

become so popular, so universally craved and sought after, that it is (I read this) “synonymous with millennials.” Seems a whole generation has a fixation with avocado toast, now regarded as the universal brunch item. Who knew?

In praise of alligator pears

Avocados didn’t have to bear that unpleasant moniker very long. But they were called alligator pears when Aunt Alda first came across them in Regina, Saskatchewan a long time ago. She was so intrigued with the exotic fruit with the novel name that she bought one of the expensive fruits with her hard-earned money.

The story we heard was that she tried to eat it like a regular fruit, biting right in. There was no instruction manual for avocado consumption in the wilds of far-away Canada in those days. Alda was so dismayed she didn’t touch another alligator pear until years later.

Such an ungainly name just wouldn’t serve. But how to translate its Aztec name, ahuacate? Which, by the way, was also the Aztec word for testicle. Similar shapes in the Aztec view of things.

Google gave me these astounding facts, along with a bunch of other stuff about the amazing avocado.

Such as the fact that there are 400 varieties, the Hass, of course, being the alltime favorite due to its creamy deliciousness. I didn’t grow up with this kind of familiarity. Avocados didn’t populate the orchards in northern California, so they were foreign and strange, and we didn’t know what to do with them. It wasn’t until the discovery of guacamole and chips that I began to truly savor avocados.

Google says that farmers came up with the name, simplifying the Aztec ahuacate into something more pronounceable—and saleable. The fruit has

I read about a little twitter scrap between some guy who said that if millennials could give up their fixation with exotic foods like avocado toast, they’d be able to afford to buy a house. Kind of a jump, and some outraged millennials jumped on it. The last entry I read was “Hold my avocado,” a riff on “Hold my beer,” I guess. Isn’t that what the guy in the bar says just before raising his fists?

Who knew that a lowly food item could be such a contentious subject?

Avocados are so good for us! Full of monosaturated fat (the kind that lowers LDL cholesterol), fiber, more potassium than bananas, loaded with folates and vitamin E, plus a lot of other things.

It turns out that avos are beloved for their versatility. In food service terms (which I also read), they act as “covalent bonds” when mixed with other ingredients. It seems avocados “convert disparate tastes into complementary ones.” In other words, they blend in well. Like in ice cream, which the Brazilians have been doing for a while. And Indonesians blend it in their drinks.

California grows 90 percent of all avocados grown in the U.S. But Mexico provides 82 percent of avos consumed in the U.S. Go figure. At least we who live on the South Coast can follow the dictum to eat local by buying locally grown avocados. If you read the labels on those plump and lovely inexpensive avocados in the super market, you’ll see that most come from Mexico. You have to hope that none of those invasive beetles that are killing trees all over the south don’t develop a liking for avocado trees because those big leafy green wonders cover the hills all around us. Avocados are a favorite backyard tree in Summerland, as they are in Carp. Some people let those fantastic fruits just drop, and my dog Gracie hunts them down with terrier fervor. She’d rather lose a tooth then give one up once she’s got it clamped in her jaws.

The time has arrived to pay homage to Carpinteria’s favorite fruit.

The 31 st Annual C a l i f o r n i a Avocado Festival brings its rocking live tunes, tasty foods, hoppy brews, unique merchandise and, of course, avocados galore. The fest kicks off on Friday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. and runs to 10 p.m., Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Among the festival’s many highlights is the guacamole contest, which takes place on Sunday, Oct. 8 at the Grotto Stage at 8th Street and Linden Avenue when judging begins at 11 a.m. to determine the best guacamole entered in the contest. Keith said that the project proved to be an amalgam of various drought-tolerant landscaping ideas that he and his wife noted around town. Coastal Landscape helped the couple with design, and Abe Nursery and Foothill Nursery provided the plants.

After research and labor, it’s “now a relief to sit back and watch the plants take hold,” said Keith. “We are proud and are ready to enjoy how the front of our house has greatly improved, and hopefully added value to our neighborhood.”

Avo merch maven sells for good If you’re looking for action at the California Avocado Festival, head to the official merchandise booth at 8th and Linden. You’ll find Annette Fisher and her team of dedicated volunteers working nonstop, selling festival aprons, caps, magnets, totes and tons of T-shirts.

Below, Fisher describes her role as chair of the festival booth, and also talks about her volunteer work with CarpStrong, an organization founded by Mike Lazaro that gives a Carpinteria a platform to meet community needs.

How did you get involved with the Avocado Festival?

Five years ago, the board needed someone to run the merchandise booth. I had no idea what it would involve—and that it would become something I love so much. I’m honored to give back to this amazing community, both through the festival and through CarpStrong.

Please tell more about your booth.

It’s the only merchandise booth associated with the festival. It’s 100-percent volunteer run, and it’s the only retail booth that gives back 100-percent profit to the Avocado Festival. The funds provide scholarships, so we know our hard work is worthwhile.

What are your duties before the festival takes place?

I start picking merchandise in August,

and I start choosing T-shirt designs and colors in September. I also begin recruiting volunteers for the booth.

How busy does it get during the festival?

The booth has three sides, and sometimes people line up 25 deep at each side.

It’s a real adrenaline feeling. We have a system that works very well. I start out with a certain amount of inventory, and when it runs low, I make a phone call. Soon my husband, Dan, is dollying freshly printed T-shirts down Linden from Serigraph, the print shop where he works. Ben Mascari, who owns Serigraph, runs those boxes of shirts as well.

I have such a great team in the booth, too.

They’re there working hard and loving what they’re doing.

What skills are important for working at the booth?

Multitasking, and a positive attitude.

Whenever I can, I do things to recharge us. If it slows down for a minute, I grab my camera, take a picture and say, “Let’s go team!”

What are some of the most emotional parts of your job?

The Carpinteria High School polo team has worked with us for years as part of their community service hours.

I’ve seen these boys grow up and become part of the booth. That fills my heart. All the people who volunteer in my booth are like family. When I recruit, I always get emails back saying, “Put me down.”

People come back every year.

What’s the best part of volunteering?

Giving back to the community is 100 percent the best part. The beautiful relationships you form are also amazing, but when you work at events, you give back in a way you feel proud of.

You also volunteer for CarpStrong, which puts on benefits for people in difficult circumstances. How would you describe it, and what kinds of activities do you do?

It’s an amazing platform that does something wonderful for people in need.

I’m proud to be associated it. I’ve hosted fundraisers for the family of a little boy who has kidney failure. A girlfriend of mine used CarpStrong for someone else who has colon cancer. It’s a lot of work, but the families who benefit are so happy.

Your husband works with you on your volunteer projects. He describes himself as the silent partner, providing a strong back and strong hands.

Please tell more about your partnership.

Dan puts up with me! He’s the best support system. We think that in every healthy relationship, a couple should volunteer together.

Carpinteria avos: From pollination to plate

They drip off trees throughout the valley. They put food on the table of growers, pickers and all sorts of Carpinterians involved in the avocado industry. And they end up on Carpinteria plates, improving just about any dish. But how much do you really know about the life of the avocado, and its journey from tree to table? Read on, avo lovers.

LeFT, Come spring, California avocados are ready for harvest.

The fruits stop growing in the winter but increase in size and oil content quickly in the warmer weather. Carpinteria’s climate allows for a long fruit-picking window that typically starts in april and runs to early fall. Fruit ripens earlier in growing regions south of Carpinteria. as such, Carpinteria growers traditionally waited to pick until San diego and Riverside areas had finished their harvest. Tim MacMurray said that “in the old days,” by September, the only avocados growing were in Carpinteria and Morro Bay. Now imports come in throughout the season. Mexico is the number one supplier of avocados in the U.S., then California, with Peru and Chile following.

LeFT, The birds and the bees: avocado growers rely heavily on bees for pollination, and many install hives on their ranches to ensure fruiting. after pollination, the avocado flowers fall off and baby avocados that growers call BBs appear. Local grower Tim MacMurray noted that BBs are highly vulnerable and likely to drop in a breeze. “Most of them fall off,” he said.

BeLoW, By the fall, the avocados that survive the BB stage have grown to the size of golf balls. The picking season sometimes extends into the early fall in Carpinteria, but pickers leave the new fruits like those pictured below, and harvest avocados that have been on the tree for nearly 18 months.

a local grower hauls a few bins of avos to CMT Trucking on Casitas Pass Road, where the fruit will be loaded onto a truck and shipped to a packinghouse. each bin holds about 900 pounds of avocados. Some local growers pick their entire crop in a week or two, while others pick a few bins weekly throughout the season. Some have CMT pick up bins at the ranch, while others bring the fruit to CMT to complete the transport to the packinghouse.

Sizing relates to the number of avocados that fit in 25-pound box—with 36s being on the large end and 60s on the small end. Some farmers “size pick,” but most put all sizes in bins to be sorted by machine at the packinghouse.

Though Carpinteria enjoys a mild climate, winter nights can fall below freezing several times a year. Avocados can tolerate about an hour of sub-freezing temps, but more than that threatens the crop. Some growers invest in permanent wind machines, like Tim MacMurray’s pictured at left.

Others rent propane-fueled wind machines for the cold season.

The machines force air movement because, as MacMurray said, “Just a slight breeze keeps the cold air off the fruit.”

CMT also uses semi-trucks that hold 42-48 bins to transport to the packinghouses, many of which are in the San Diego and Riverside areas where the avo industry began. Calavo, however, has a Santa Paula packinghouse, and Mission Produce has one in Oxnard.

Fruit with some scarring falls into the next category down, and the fruits with too much scarring, or blemishes that go through to the flesh, are culled from those bound for market.

A Mission truck hauls fruit to its destination. Large retailers from California send their trucks to the packinghouse, then move the fruit to a warehouse and distribute to stores from there. Grocery chains in other parts of the country often use an independent trucking company to take fruit to plants that will distribute to stores.

By the time Carpinterians purchase avocados at the grocery store to make tasty dishes like this guacamole entry in last year’s California Avocado Festival, the fruit likely has traveled a great distance. If you eat a California avocado from the grocery store late in the season, there’s a good chance it was grown locally, Tim MacMurray said, but went to a Santa Paula or Oxnard packinghouse and then to a Los Angeles grocery warehouse before making its way back to Carpinteria.

“Five people handled that one avocado just to get into the supermarket,” he said.

Put on your dancing shoes! It’s time for Carpinteria’s 2017 California Avocado Festival. The music never stops at the city’s annual three-day fest, Friday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct 8. This year’s musical offerings include bawdy blues, smooth soul, power pop, spicy ska and hot rock.

Not enough? There’s also lively Latin, rousing reggae, fresh folk, sunny surf and carefree country music. The festival’s Youth Stage will spotlight family friendly acts on both Saturday and Sunday.

After 29 years of volunteering as the festival’s food/beverage and entertainment director, Carpinterian Mike Lazaro is still going strong.

I asked what drives him to coordinate California’s biggest free street festival. “It’s all about the community that I’m blessed to live in. The city embraced my family 37 years ago, and I want to support its traditions. In my travels around the country, I don’t see a lot of what we do here in Carpinteria. I want to keep the city’s music and art vibe going.

The festival is really about having fun. I mean, how serious can we be?

We’re throwing big party for an avocado!” Lazaro mused.

Last year over 110,000 people enjoyed Linden Avenue’s avocado ice cream, Lions Club tri-tip sandwiches and guacamole from the Carpinteria High School cheerleaders’ huge avocado vat. This year’s large Ferris Wheel is sure to bring smiles.

The music kicks off on Friday afternoon and rolls through Sunday evening with 75 acts performing on the festival’s four stages. The Americana Cats hit the Main Stage featuring local singer/harmonica player Ted Rhodes. Connor Weinstein’s pop/rock act Next Door to the Moon takes the Main Stage Connor’s group has just released a new EP recording. Bobby Montanes’ tight band Out of the Blue will perform classic rock favorites.

Carpinteria’s DJ Hecktic will spin digital tracks on the Seal Stage.

His DJ set will feature a live drummer. Catch bassist/vocalist Hector Hurtado and his band SuperStoked on Friday and stay to hear Carpinteria City Manager/bassist Dave Durflinger’s polished rock act South On Linden. Sandwiched in between will be the astounding blues guitarist Alastair Greene, who has toured with English rocker Alan Parsons. The Grotto Stage’s Friday offerings include the Laughing Buddha Song-Stars who will close their show with a classic Beatles sing-along. Don’t miss top local act The Dusty Jugz playing their uptempo country hits under the Grotto tent.

The weekend’s Main Stage standouts include popular ska band The Upbeat who often draw the festival’s largest crowd, the positive reggae vibe of band Cornerstone, local Latin sensations The Flashbacks featuring guitarist Fermi Gonzalez, British Invasion act The Tearaways who play each year in Liverpool, England and a helping of blues from legendary guitarist Rick Reeves and his All-Stars.

Seal Stage favs include Beatles tribute band Sgt. Pepper and talented young singers Jamey Geston, Xenia Flores and Sophia Guerra. Rockabilly singer-songwriter Nate Latta will close the Seal Stage on Sunday afternoon. The Grotto’s weekend offerings include Johnny Cash tribute artists Jimmie and Cindi Cantrell who are bringing their standout show from Las Vegas. Don’t miss extraordinary local fiddler Phil Salazar on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

There are several new acts playing at Avofest for the first time, including the sizzling LA band The Disreputable Few. Also check out Wheels On Fire who perform a tribute to The Band, the legendary 1960’s rock act who once backed by Bob Dylan. Both new groups play on the Grotto Stage on Sunday afternoon.

Young Stars

Entertainment Director Lazaro has enhanced this year’s Youth Stage experience. “I wanted our budding stars to see what it’s like to perform on a professional stage with backline gear and be ready to move up in the years to come,” he said. Lazaro has tapped Matt Molloy to run the Guac and Roll Youth Stage. With assistance from Rock and Roll Productions and Kai Tepper of the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation, Molloy has added a professional sound system, amplifiers and drums.

“We’ve brought in good equipment and have a great line-up and variety of talented young performers. There are teen and pre-teen bands from all over the area, dance groups, young singers, karate demonstrations and spiral gymnasts doing flips and twists. It’s going to be a fun weekend and we hope people will come check it out,” Molloy said.

The nominal parking/shuttle fee benefits the high school’s athletic program. Don’t forget to attend the World Championship of Guacamole on Sunday at 11 a.m. in the Grotto Tent. Audience members get to taste the entries after the winner is announced.

Fruits, nuts and flowers grace the wall Carpinterians turn out for mural dedication

A bird’s-eye view of Carpinteria Valley, with the coastline curving away to the west and the islands on the horizon, greeted attendees on Sunday, Oct. 1, at the dedication ceremony for John Wullbrandt’s latest mural, “The Carpinteria Valley: A Growing Heritage.” Depicting the main crops of the city’s agricultural history—the Lima bean, lemon, walnut, avocado and flower varietals—Wullbrandt’s vibrant colors enliven the wall of owner Marta Marquez’s building next door to the bank of America at Carpinteria and Linden Avenues. Jr. Warriors of the Week

Carpinteria Junior Warriors is a recreational tackle football league serving boys and girls in Carpinteria from ages 6 to 14 years.

Bantam: David “Aquaman” Aquistapace, #4, is a two-way starter. Aquaman had an outstanding game, he scored both touchdowns of the day, one a 35-yard breakout from the wedge and a kick-off return of 65 yards. On top of that, Aquman’s skills as quarterback have vastly improved from week one to now. Bantams were defeated last weekend 14-18.

Junior: Game Flores #92, and is a first-year player.

Flores started at center on offense and defensive tackle on defense. He opened up several running lanes and had four huge pancake blocks. Adding to that a sack and three tackles for the loss on defense. Juniors were defeated last weekend 0-36.

Sophomore: Judah Torres, #32, is a first-year player and plays tight end and linebacker. He improves every game and played a big role in Saturday’s game against Santa Barbara with lots of positive yards and made many tackles in the backfield. Sophomores were defeated last weekend 0-32.

Warriors fall to potent Bishop squad

The Bishop Diego High School football team continued its recent dominance over the Warriors with a 56-0 pasting last Friday night at SBCC’s La Playa Stadium. The win makes it seven in a row for the Cardinals over Carpinteria, as the Santa Barbara school captured the victory on homecoming night of the 75th game of the series. The Warriors still hold a huge edge in the overall matchup between the schools with 52 wins, 20 losses and three ties.

Carpinteria got off to a rough start with quarterback Vance Keiser getting chased down for a 21-yard sack on the game’s first offensive series, forcing the Senior: Zach Mata, #50, is a returning player and plays both sides of the ball. Saturday’s performance included several offensive catches. Zach had a defensive presence on solo tackles for losses as well. Seniors were defeated last weekend 6-31.

For the second time in as many weeks, the Cate School football team found itself in a shootout that came down to the wire. Unfortunately for the Rams, they were on the losing end of this one, dropping a 72-68 road contest to Orcutt Academy on Sept. 29.

Cate is now 0-1 in Mt. Pinos League play.

Each side found the end zone 10 times, with the PATs (point after touchdown) being the difference in the outcome. Junior Jack Deardorff had his hand in just about everything Cate did all evening, as the sophomore signal caller was responsible for six

touchdowns, five of which were on the ground. The one through the air went to sophomore Thomas Nettesheim. Junior Drew Anastasio had four touchdowns for the Rams, all of which were on the ground.

“This was a tough one for us to swallow,” said Assistant Coach Dave Soto. “We need to do a better job at finishing games; when you’re playing good teams, you can’t give them second chance after second chance. The good news for us is that there is plenty of football still to be played. We’ll regroup and get ready to go for some more tough opponents.”

Warriors to punt on fourth down from their own 6-yard line. As a result, Bishop Diego started its opening drive on the Carpinteria 45. The Cardinals seized the opportunity with quarterback David Gladish hooking up with wide receiver Dylan Streett on a 24-yard pass play to give Bishop a first down at the Warrior 5-yard line. Running back John Harris carried it home from there with a 5-yard touchdown run to put the Cardinals up 7-0.

Although Carpinteria went three-and-out on the ensuing drive, Alberto Arroyo’s 61-yard punt put Bishop back to its own 20. Nevertheless, the Cardinals would strike back quickly once again, as Gladish found a big hole off the right side and sprinted 80 yards for a 14-0 lead with six minutes left in the first. On the Warriors’ next possession, Streett, from his defensive back position, returned an interception 58 yards for another score, making it 21-0. “You have to give (Bishop) credit; they didn’t come out and mess around much,” said Carpinteria coach Rick Candaele. “Now, we have other goals besides Bishop … our goal is to win a couple more before we get into league, and see what happens,” he added.

Harris added another score on a 20-yard run, and the Cardinals increased their lead to 28-0 with 10:18 to play in the first half. The Warriors picked up a first down on Keiser’s 21-yard completion to Terrell Richardson. But the drive stalled, and Carpinteria once again was forced to punt.

Following a rare Bishop punt, the Warriors were hemmed back on their own 6-yard line. The Cardinals then managed yet another big play, as Isaia Morones hauled in a second interception, returning it 32 yards for a 35-0 lead. “They’ve assembled a really fine team, I think they’re going to challenge for their division,” said Candaele of the CIF-Southern Section’s top-ranked team in Division VI. Harris would explode again for a 59-yard touchdown run to put the home team up 42-0 at the half.

The senior running back with 127 yards on seven carries and three touchdowns earned the G.I. Forum Bishop/Carpinteria Game MVP award and at halftime was crowned homecoming king. Meanwhile, the Cardinals added two more scores in the second half to wrap things up.

Warrior running back Isaac De Alba ran for 45 yards on 12 carries and caught three passes. Richardson hauled in two passes for 25 yards, and Keiser completed seven of 13 passes for 48 yards with two interceptions. The Warriors return home to take on Santa Paula tomorrow night with the kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium.

September 26 –Cate School and Thacher, two undefeated girls tennis teams, battled on the courts last week where Cate pulled off a 13-5 win. Thacher is last year’s CIF Division IV playoff champion, and the Rams have made the last two consecutive Division II quarterfinals. Cate opened the match, held in Ojai at Thacher, by rifling off wins on five of six courts in the first round, with the lone loss coming at the number-three singles position, where Sydney Burton fell. It was all business for the Cai sisters, with Jackie winning her two singles rounds 6-1, 6-0 and Carol partnering with Sarah Polowczak to win 6-1, 6-0. Polowczack continued her regular season unbeaten streak in the third round, partnering with Jennifer Soh for a 6-0 victor and bringing her tally to a remarkable 50-0 over the last two seasons. Grace Fuss went 3-0 on the day, moving her season record to 13-1, and senior/freshman doubles pairing Janice Ng/Fritze Mayer nearly pulled off a sweep as well.

September 28 – The Cate School girls tennis team took another victory today against Tri-Valley League Opponent La Reina by a score of 16-2. Sophomore Grace Fuss executed a sweep, including a 6-1 victory over Tiara Nourishad, who is currently ranked 85th among California juniors. Freshman Fritze Mayer and junior Kate Tunnell also swept their three sets (6-0, 6-1, 6-0). “I was very pleased with our execution today,” said Rams coach Trevor Thorpe. “We came in with a strategy of how we wanted to play, and how we wanted to handle the intangibles, and the girls were great from start to finish.” Cate is now 6-0 on the season.

September 27 – The Cate School cross country hosted the Condor League with the Rams coming out on top in both races with a win over Laguna Blanca by the girls and a defeat of Midland by the boys. “It was a bittersweet run for senior co-captain Isabela Montes de Oca, who won the girls race in her final outing on the Cate course.

Her time of 21:56 wasn’t her fastest on the 3-mile layout, but she showed her grit and determination in leading her team to victory, as she has done so many times in her storied Cate career,” said Rams coach Karl Weis. Junior co-captain Bella Hillyer finished in second with a time of 22:17. Senior Isabel Sorenson made her final race on the Cate course, finishing fifth in 24:27. For the boys, sophomore Tesfa Amara led the Rams with a fourth place finish in 18:28, and freshman John Rokoine was sixth in 18:41. But the Cate boys victory was secured by a pack: senior co-captain Ian MacFarlane taking eighth in 19:06, junior Josh Shields finishing ninth in 19:10, and junior Abnner Olivares in 10th in 19:12.

September 28 – The Carpinteria High School girls golf team beat La Reina, stroking a 260 to 268 victory. Senior Tahis Alcantar shot a season low of 51, along with Amanda and Mikayla Blair who both matched her score. Sophomore Ariana Vega had another personal best of 52. “For the second time in school history the Carpinteria Lady Warriors defeated La Reina to prove the first win was not a fluke,” said Carpinteria coach Reina Rogers.

October 3 – The Carpinteria High School girls golf team beat Bishop Diego by a score of 262 to 294. Senior Mikayla Blair shot a 43, which is her low for the season. Iliana Esquivel was next with a 50, and Amanda Blair tallied a 54. Bishop Diego’s Grace Hay shot a 39 to lead all scorers. The win puts the Warriors at 10-1 on the year.

Water polo

September 29 – The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team battled it out in the pool against Villanova Prep, swimming away with a 12-10 victory. The Warriors were down by three goals going into the fourth quarter, and with five seconds left, senior Jordan Perez scored to tie the game, 9-9. After the first overtime didn’t decide the outcome, with 15 seconds left in the second overtime, the Wildcats were down by one goal and had a chance to tie it up. But Carpinteria came up with a steal and swam the ball down to add one more goal to take the win. The senior Perez netted four goals and junior Jack Gay knocked in three. Meanwhile, junior Ali Hamadi had two goals, as did fellow junior Wyatt Stevenson.

Girls tennis

September 28 – The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team dropped a Tri-Valley League match to Malibu, 13-5, and lost another player to injury. Lexi Persoon/Jeannette Carrillo (who is the latest injured player) won two of their three sets. Karla Marin also won two sets with two different partners, Diana Gonzalez and Amy Perez.

Vicky Delk/Hali Schwasnick won the last point. “In singles, we had a few close sets, but I was happy with how Sydney Endow played at the end,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Carpinteria is now 6-6 overall and 0-4 in the TVL.

Cate sophomore Ethan Ha was one of Cate’s top tennis players last season. The Carpinteria native has stayed busy in the offseason, recently winning the South Bay Fall Open Boys’ 16 Tennis Tournament at the South Bay Tennis Center in Torrence, Calif. on Oct. 1. The tournament brought together 32 talented 16-andunder tennis players from the Los Angeles and Orange county areas.

Ha was the number one overall seed and, after a first round bye, won two matches on Sept. 24. The two wins moved Ha to the semifinals the following weekend, and after his semi-final win, Ha took down the number-two seed in the championship (3-6, 7-6, 13-11).

Palm Loft Gallery hosts “Spirit of the Land”

Howard students prep avocado brownies for sale at this weekend’s festival.

Howard School ups the ante on the bake sale

Howard School students, alongside The Food Liaison bakers, has been baking avocado brownies for the three-day California Avocado Festival. The Food Liaison will donate 100 percent of proceeds directly to the nonprofit private school. The avocado brownie booth will be located at Linden Avenue and Wullbrandt Way for the duration of the festival. Howard School mascot “Howie the Hedgehog” will be available for pictures, and those who post a photo of Howie with #HowardSchool will be entered in a drawing for a gift certificate to The Food Liaison.

The walls of the Palm Loft Gallery are now peppered with landscapes translated through the eyes, minds and brushes of several artists. The “Spirit of the Land” art show runs from Oct. 1 to Nov. 19 and will be celebrated with an artists’ reception and a concert on Oct. 14 at the gallery, 410 Palm Ave. The show features a number of well-known Santa Barbara area landscape painters, and one photographer—all longtime friends of Arturo Tello, Co-Founder of the Oak Group and president of the Citizens for Carpinteria Bluffs, who has run the Palm Loft Gallery for the past 12 years and has just recently become the new owner. The reception will run from 5 to 7 p.m. and a concert with songwriter performer Michael McNevin will be held immediately after the reception from 7:15 to 9:30 p.m. The wine and pizza reception, as well as the concert, are free. CMS digs deep for Clifton Middle School

A new show of recent oil landscapes from emerging local artist Ben O’Hara will grace the walls of the Lucky Llama Coffeehouse, 5100 Carpinteria Ave., through the month of October. A 2013 graduate of Carpinteria High School, O’Hara has worked variously as a fisherman and carpenter’s apprentice between travels around the west painting en plein air, and an epic surfing adventure to the far reaches of Australia’s western desert shores.

Students at Carpinteria Middle School collected over $700 and 120 pounds of school supplies to send to Clifton Middle School in Houston, Texas, which was heavily affected by Hurricane Harvey. The UPS Store on Casitas Pass Road also helped by donating a large portion of the shipping costs for the six boxes of supplies that the Carpinteria students sent.

Carpinteria Children’s Project puts Family Health first

The Carpinteria Children’s Project will put on its 5th annual Family Health Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 10 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the campus, 5201 8th Street. Activities will include free diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol health screenings for children and adults. Also, activities for kids include a kids’ farmers market, library activity table and fun physical activities. Are you thinking about guacamole?

Then you are probably thinking about tacos, too.

Gustavo Arellano is a humor columnist and in his book, “Tacos USA,” he covers the history of Mexican food, from its origins with the Aztecs to its present-day incarnations. But what many of us experience as Mexican food was invented in America, and it has a long history of being made in the USA. Arellano traces the paths of tamales, tacos, burritos, tortilla chips, etc. and shows how they either were born in the United States or changed irreversibly after crossing the border. He unearths forgotten incarnations of Mexican food, like the stews made by San Antonio’s once-famous chili queens in the late 19th century.

He mentions just about every Mexican restaurant, product line and preparation in the country. If you’ve ever wondered about the roots of Taco Bell or why fajitas are

Some stories are best read aloud, much like the word avocado. John Burningham’s picture book “Avocado Baby” is a classic starting point in avocado literature. This tale of a weak, pickyeater-turned-hero takes place far from the avocado groves of Carpinteria, in a land where they are known as avocado pears.

The Hargraves welcome a new baby but are concerned that it will be as weak as the rest of the family. The baby doesn’t like food and won’t eat much. Then one day mysteriously “there was an avocado pear. Nobody knew how it got there . . .”

Inevitably, the baby takes to avocados and becomes amazingly strong and indispensable to the family. The baby starts taking matters into its own hands, rescuing its brother and sister, and confronting a burglar and bullies.

While “Avocado Baby” touches on wide-ranging and serious themes, Burningham’s colorful illustrations set a light tone. After all, as story morals go, eating avocados daily is certainly not tough to swallow.

Carpinteria Book Club Pick “The Wings of Invention”

Popularized by her best-selling first novel, “The Secret Life of Bees,” Sue Monk Kidd puts another poignant tale of female friendship in front of readers with “The Wings of Invention.” This story begins in South Carolina in 1803 when 11-yearold Sarah is given a slave, Handful, as a birthday present. Sarah’s attempt to free Handful is thwarted, and the novel covers 35 years as the two women contend with the restrictions society places on them. Carpinteria Book Club will meet to discuss the book on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m. Traditionally, the public club has met at Carpinteria Library, but this meeting will take place at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, 4991 Carpinteria Ave.

Emily and Bradley Miles helped staff the California Avocado Commission Booth at the Morro Bay Avocado & Margarita Festival in September. Emily’s nifty T-shirt was this year’s California Avocado Commission design, and she said the one-day event in Morro Bay is a scaleddown version of Carpinteria’s three days of “peace, love and avocados,” which kicks off this Friday. Avocado ranchers themselves, the Mileses noted that there are also nice avos grown north of Carpinteria up to about Cayucos. In California, the avocado harvest typically begins in San Diego in February, moving north with the season until growers in Carpinteria harvest, more or less, in the month of May.

Sri Lanka, also known as the “Pearl in the Indian Ocean,” has a rich history and was colonized by the Portuguese, Dutch and British. Joe and Lucy Overgaag explored the beautiful country on bicycle, starting in the capital of Colombo. They traveled along the coast then inland through tea plantations and rice paddies, ending their journey in colonial Galle Fort. While sightseeing at the fort, they came across some Dutch tourists, the Van Dijk family, who happen to live in a town near where the Overgaag’s had grown up and lived in the Netherlands.

This had to be celebrated, and they had a toast in an establishment appropriately named “The Old Dutch Hospital.”
