Woman attacked and robbed on Via Real

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in its search for a suspect who violently attacked and robbed a woman at a bus stop in the 4000 block of Via Real on Saturday, April 29 around 8:50 p.m.

The 27-year-old victim was sitting on a bench at a bus stop waiting for the bus when she noticed an unknown male wearing dark clothing standing behind her. The man, who appeared to be in his 20s, then grabbed the victim and started striking her. The victim screamed for help and fought back. After a violent struggle, the suspect was able to wrench the victim’s purse away from her and fled the area.

The victim managed to run away and call 911 for help. Sheriff’s deputies including a K9 team responded to the area but could not locate the suspect. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries.

TurboFit Gym closes

After one year of operation, TurbFit Gym on the west end of Carpinteria Avenue was abruptly closed last week. Owner Rob Burke, who has Parkinson’s disease, sent a letter to members this week explaining that false rumors of his illness taking a terrible turn had resulted in a dramatic drop in membership and an inability to meet financing obligations on his fitness equipment. Facing repossession of the gym’s equipment, he closed the doors. “I just want to assure you that I am not dying as had been rumored,” Burke stated. “I do, however continue to battle Parkinson’s disease, which meant that I was looking to take on a less stressful role in TurboFit’s operation. Somehow, this got construed into me wanting to off-load the gym because I was gravely ill. Again, I continue to thrive and am a testament to the fact that we can beat this disease with adherence to a strict diet and exercise.” Burke also told clients that memberships have been terminated and all auto-pay suspended. He asked that clients with longterm memberships be patient as he is “working very hard to accommodate your refunds as quickly and completely as possible.”

Community to honor Hickey Banks

Carpinteria education Foundation will hold a special event this week to honor Terry Hickey Banks for her many contributions to local public education. The cocktail reception, a fundraiser for CeF’s endowment fund, will be held on Friday, May 5 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at a private home. There will be hors d’oeuvres and a hosted bar. Hickey Banks stepped down from the school board last year after 21 years of leadership. When her own children were in school, she served on the PTA and school parent groups and volunteered one day a week in each of their classrooms. She dedicated time to the CHS Boosters Club, Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce and Girls Inc. of Carpinteria. She remains a THRIVe executive board member and strong supporter of the Carpinteria Children’s Project. She is a member of the ProYouth Coalition and South Coast Gang Task Force member and a member of the County Committee on School District Reorganization. Suspect at large after robbing local bank

A 50- to 60-year-old man robbed Montecito Bank and Trust on April 27 at 5:20 p.m. and remains at large. Sheriff’s deputies responded to a silent alarm call at the bank branch off Casitas Pass Road. When deputies arrived, bank employees confirmed that a heavyset man had handed a teller a note demanding money and fled on foot out the front door after being given an undisclosed amount of cash. Witness statements and video surveillance indicate that the man is Caucasian or Hispanic; between 5-foot, 9-inches and 5-foot, 11-inches tall; and 250 pounds. He was wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, sunglasses and a black baseball cap with a green “Zoo York” emblem. Dead birds, sea lions prompt study

Higher than normal mortality rates among seabirds and sea lions have raised concerns in recent weeks. Triggered by many reports of sick or dead animals, u.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducted a survey of beaches between Goleta and Point Dume between April 18 and 24. In Summerland, the carcasses of five birds and one marine mammal were documented. In Carpinteria, just one bird carcass was found, and at Rincon, biologists documented three birds and one mammal. Among all the areas surveyed, loons represented 75 percent of the bird carcasses, with dead cormorants being second-most abundant.

Fish and Wildlife is investigating the cause of the die-off. Many of the sick animals located over the last month have shown signs of demoic acid poisoning, such as lethargy, seizures or foaming at the mouth. Demoic acid is a naturally occurring toxin produced by marine algae. When algal blooms, or red tides, occur, the toxin becomes more prevalent in the marine environment and can cause unusual numbers of marine animals to perish.

Carpinteria among most “underrated beach towns”

Light Therapy Review, an online publication focused on the use of light to treat seasonal affective disorder, included Carpinteria in its list of the 30 most relaxing underrated beach towns on the West Coast in 2017. The website identified small towns with low crowds that offer natural beauty and fun activities. Regarding Carpinteria, the editor noted, “As the crowds make their way to nearby Santa Barbara, we suggest heading to Carpinteria, one of the most underrated beach towns on the West Coast.”

The 21-acre Bluffs III property will soon be turned over to the City of Carpinteria for preservation and maintenance.

Bluffs III lands $350K state grant

On April 27, the State Coastal Conservancy unanimously approved a $350,000 grant towards the acquisition of the 21-acre Carpinteria Bluffs III property. The grant was awarded to the City of Carpinteria, the ultimate owner and long-term steward of the property.

“Approval of these funds by the Coastal Conservancy brings us into the final stretch in our efforts to preserve this significant coastal open space in Carpinteria,” stated Fred Shaw, Mayor of Carpinteria.

The California Transportation Commission approved a $450,000 grant last month, and the County of Santa Barbara is considering an application for Coastal Resource enhancement Funds toward the project. These public funds, combined with private donations and a year-long community fundraising campaign, brings the project very close to its $7.9 million goal for the purchase, restoration and ongoing maintenance of the property. Measure U update—Aliso School

The Pacific breeze cools the air with a salty tinge in the open walkways of Aliso School, the red-tiled roofs and small courtyard a slice of old California. Built in the 1930s, Aliso is indeed an architectural time capsule and, fortunately, the plans to upgrade the campus with Measure U funds preserve the original structure and highlight it by bringing the administrative offices and the main school entrance back to its original center.

Aliso School, like each campus in the Carpinteria Unified School District, will undergo major infrastructure improvements and modernizations in coming years. Beginning with an automated fire alarm and voice evacuation system scheduled for installation this summer, and continuing with classroom renovations to adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the installation of six Gen7 modular classrooms, a re-model of the kitchen and existing multi-purpose room/administration offices, the work at Aliso will continue into the year 2020.

While upgraded classroom technology in the form of new alarms, wireless connectivity and “smart boards” for teaching will make the campus safer and bring it in line with 21st-century standards, the new infrastructure will ultimately raise school operating costs across the district. “Technology costs more to maintain,” said David Weniger, CUSD Director of facilities and Operations. “Dust and spider webs trigger the new alarm systems,” Weniger added as an example, but he also noted, “the upside is that the system triggers automatically in a real fire.”

Like many of the other campuses across CUSD, Aliso School relies on aged portable buildings for a significant number of classrooms. Currently, transitional kindergarten and kindergarten classes, as well as a preschool program run by the Carpinteria Children’s Project, operate out of portable buildings on the east side of the campus. Aliso School’s re-configuration will bring TK and kindergarten classrooms in close proximity to the new administration offices near the school’s entrance.

Fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms will occupy the high tech Gen7 buildings that will be installed on the current asphalt basketball/volleyball courts, and the portable buildings will serve as interim classroom space as renovation work com-

mences in throughout the main school buildings towards the front of the campus along Carpinteria Avenue.

Each school site in the district has its unique issues, like the steep grade at Summerland School and the soil stability at Canalino, which will require costly soil amendments to remediate. At Aliso School, the challenge is the overall elevation of the campus in relation to the floodplain it sits on and governmental regulations for school structures in such places. “You have to make sure you do your due diligence engineering founda-

tions,” Weniger said.

Yet for all the upgrades and reconfigurations coming to Aliso School, Weniger pointed out that with the exception of the Gen7 modulars, most of the improvements will not be readily noticeable.

“We’ll take out the floors and walls, replace the aging plumbing and add the infrastructure, but in the end it will look like we just painted the walls and added new lighting,” Weniger said. But with a school as unique in size and design as Aliso is, that end result should be just fine.

Aliso legacy of segregation

Institutionalized racism made Aliso a segregated school from about 1920 to 1947. In his 2011 book “Aliso School—‘For the Mexican Children’” John McCafferty states that the school was “‘for the Mexican children’ as school board minutes called them, whether their parents approved or not.” Echoes of segregation persist today, as Acting Superintendent Jamie Persoon noted at the CUSD Board of Education meeting April 11: “We’re granting 24 white students out of Canalino and Aliso to go to Summerland School. What are we saying about our schools if we’re allowing this to happen?”

School board clarifies intra-district stance

The Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education called in its legal mind on April 25 to decipher and clearly state policies that have been retooled to compensate for mounting racial and socioeconomic inequality at district elementary schools. Craig Price, CUSD legal counsel, ironed-out kinks in the understanding of exactly what school policies mean and helped to guide the board in directing administrators, who will process intra-district transfer requests at the elementary level.

In short, the school district will process intra-district transfer requests for students entering kindergarten on a caseby-case basis, and a driving factor will be whether permitting a transfer could influence staffing decisions at schools.

Transfers will likely be denied if they affect staffing needs to the detriment of the school.

Concerns over the school district’s effort to confront racial and socioeconomic disparity at Carpinteria Family School and Summerland School, two schools identified as being whiter and wealthier than the district’s overall population, prompted the legal clarification. CFS had its lottery in the week before the board meeting, and questions remained as to whether the selection process for the school of choice was properly outlined in board policy and administrative regulations. Summerland School, which has many of its seats filled through the process of intra-district transfer requests, has drawn mostly white students away from neighborhood schools Aliso and Canalino in what had become a sanctioned version of white flight within the school district.

Acting Superintendent Jamie Persoon had highlighted some of the demographic

numbers for Summerland School at the prior school board meeting, emphasizing the school district’s desire to steer children into neighborhood schools rather than to permit shuffling of students in a way that creates an environment of competition among elementary schools.

While language used at the prior meeting suggested that district would be issuing a blanket denial of kindergarten intra-district transfers, the school board on April 25 directed Persoon to draft a letter with Price’s help to inform parents of the district’s process to evaluate each intra-district transfer request on the basis of how it will impact staffing needs at each school site.

Walking back what appeared to be a hard-lined stance against intra-district transfers, board president Andy Sheaffer said, “It’s parents’ responsibility to determine and find the best opportunity for their child, and we should afford them every opportunity to choose what they feel is the best option for their child. We shouldn’t be in the business of determining who goes where unless it affects the district fiscally.”

The letter stating the school district intra-district transfer process was sent May 2 released to clarify how pending transfer requests would be granted or denied. Largely, the conversation focuses on Summerland School, which does not have an area population of students sufficient to fill its classrooms. In discussing what should be contained in the letter, the school board and administrators suggested that the process for evaluating requests, beyond consideration of staffing impacts, shall parallel board policy regarding the CFS lottery, which changed last year following a Santa Barbara County Office of Education report that identified the school as a white and wealthy

school of choice within the district.

In order to remedy the imbalance at CFS, the board rewrote the lottery procedure last fall to give priority to socioeconomically disadvantaged students seeking entry into the school. Historically, the CFS lottery had given preference to siblings of current students, slotting those students into classrooms automatically and drawing names of remaining applicants at random. The lottery on April 17 gave first priority to students identified as qualifying for free and reduced lunch, followed by siblings. In all, the number of students qualifying as either socioeconomically disadvantaged or as siblings filled the 12 available kindergarten seats.

A lottery was then held for a waiting list of remaining students to enter the school.

At Summerland School, if intra-district transfer requests will not impact staffing, students will be permitted to leave home districts first if they are identified as socioeconomically disadvantaged and second if they are siblings of students currently enrolled at Summerland School.

In staffing-impact discussions, Aliso School has been singled out as the school losing its population in a way that has been detrimental to its numbers and staffing needs. The creation of the Dual Lan-

guage Immersion program at Canalino School will further draw from the Aliso population, and likely exacerbate the staffing impacts there.

The issue of engineering a school district to have demographically balanced schools is not unique to Carpinteria, Price stated. He cited court cases and school board decisions from around the country that have attempted to deal with the issue.

“Obviously, these kinds of issues occur nearly everywhere, where there are certain schools that are made up mostly of certain students of certain ethnic backgrounds and other schools in the same district that are the opposite,” Price said.

“There are substantial limitations in what a school district is supposed to do or is able to do in order to, quote, ‘racially balance.’”

He said school districts cannot use race as a basis for deciding who attends what school; rather, socioeconomic balance must be the guiding principle. He cited a school district in Berkeley that had successfully reworked neighborhood boundaries to compel equality.

In all likelihood, the issue of creating equality among CUSD schools will continue to be a hot topic.

One big reason not to let kids watch “13 Reasons Why”

Last Friday, Jamie Persoon, principal of Canalino School and acting superintendent of CUSD, issued a warning to all parents regarding the Netflix series “13 Reasons Why” and its potentially tragic impact on our children.

“13 Reasons Why” revolves around a student who dies by suicide after suffering a series of demoralizing circumstances brought on by select individuals at her school that erode her sense of wellbeing.

The tapes she leaves behind explain her reasons—and whom she holds responsible—for why she chose to die.

Principal Persoon’s caution cited the show’s “graphic content related to suicide and the glamorization of suicidal behavior.” After researching online, other schools have issued similar warnings. The fear of “13 Reasons Why” include the impact on vulnerable and sensitive students as well as copy-cat suicides.

As the parent of a third grader at Summerland School, my husband and I strongly commend Principal Persoon’s swift action and hope parents heed the warning. Although the subject matter may be emotional and uncomfortable to discuss, it is too important of a conversation not to have.

As a follow up to Kirk Connally’s letter published in CVN on April 27, not only is paradise being paved over, Caltrans is cutting down the trees that make the air we breathe and filter the automobile pollution. Is it irony or coincidence that this carnage is occurring in the days before and after Earth Day, and during a time of unprecedented climate change? In the past few weeks, Caltrans has cut down more trees, including state protected oaks, than the sum total of all Carpinteria trees cut down in the past decade.

It’s as horrible as a herd of slaughtered elephants. At Linden off-ramp, those oaks could have been boxed, dug up and replanted elsewhere. The city did that several years ago. Shame on Caltrans and our city council. Be leaders for a change, even if that means standing up to the state. That’s why you are there—for now.

Pull the trigger on a gas blower ban

In my opinion, there is a simple improvement that would be beneficial to Carpinteria. Adopt an ordinance eliminating the use of gas powered leaf blowers as other California cities have already done. Gas powered leaf blowers are loud and disturbing to many residents. Gas powered leaf blowers also emit high levels of carbon emissions that are harmful to people and to the environment.

Electric and cordless battery operated leaf blowers are much quieter and far less polluting.

America’s Asian “Armada,” hasn’t gotten any of what he’s identified as meaningful legislation passed, left innumerable government posts unfilled, seemingly deserted the hardworking folks who got him elected and filled many of his cabinet posts with shameless ideologues whose sole purpose seems to be blowing up their respective bailiwicks. In short, even without tongue firmly planted in cheek, Trump’s first three months in office have clearly been mired in a swamp of unequaled presidential ineptitude.

While, on a certain level, his first hundred days have been mindlessly “Keystone Copish,” the potential for a “John Wayneish” tough guy disaster feels unsettlingly imminent. And it’s not as if his supporters don’t have some experience with the negative repercussions of a “this is America’s world and any deviation from this party line will be met with America’s full military might” mindset.

One need look no further than the conservatives’ last presidential poster boy, George Bush light, and his underhanded mishandling of Iraq and the resultant bill that America will never stop repaying in terms of lives lost and maimed, energy invested and resources squandered as irrefutable evidence that thoughtful diplomacy, with rare exceptions, trumps the costs of bullish braying and warmongering as strategies for maintaining peace.

The stakes in America’s current political drama are high, and this, contrary to what some of Trump’s most ardent and vocal supporters would have us believe, isn’t a soap opera or a cage match. Our new “sheriff” needs to read the manual on riding a horse and begin behaving like a thoughtful, compassionate, responsible leader instead of a bullying, mindless, reckless, narcissistic dolt.

Other than that, I don’t have an opinion.

With the abrupt removal of EPA protections opening the way for uncontrolled DDT use and other chemicals that affect the balance of nature, it places responsibility for safety on local elected officials.

The temptation of government subsidies and tax advantages could blind some to the long-range devastation that future generations will inherit. There are more immediate concerns than objectionable smell.

Perhaps if it is a requirement that dispensaries be located in wheelchairaccessible locations it would lessen the number of them competing to open and Carpinteria will attract more civic-minded businesses that do not exclude people in pain because they cannot climb stairs.

Misinterpretation corrected

I don’t mind criticism for what I actually say, but I do mind being mischaracterized. So I must respond. Leland Walmsley (“ICE, not so nice,” April 27) misunderstood my letter of April 20, in which I wrote about my concern that if our city council declared Carpinteria a sanctuary city, it might mislead some to think, as private citizens, it would be okay to interfere with the duties of a law enforcement agency. ICE can come in whether the city declares sanctuary or not. Leland’s interpretation, “Carolyn would have us believe that law enforcement does not pursue criminals in Sanctuary Cities” is the exact opposite of what I said. In Leland’s reference to Daniela Vargas, he made a very good point that non-criminals can and do get caught up in legal problems with ICE.

The future’s so bright

Monday was such a wonderful day.

I had the privilege of interviewing Carpinteria High School seniors for the Carpinteria Education Foundation Scholarships. I was extremely impressed with the students my panel interviewed.

They were confident, well spoken, excited about college and exceptionally prepared with outstanding grade point averages.

The students shared that they had been accepted to universities such as U.C. Berkeley, U.C. Santa Barbara, University of Arizona and U.C. Davis. It is wonderful to know that our schools provide the first solid footsteps into their future.

On May 14th we will celebrate Mothers Day, honoring the women who bring us into the world and nourish and love us. We must also celebrate and protect a mother who has recently come under vicious attack by President Trump and his administration. This is our Mother Earth, our one and only great provider and home. Trump and his administration’s abandonment of the Clean Power Plan, denial of climate change, proposal to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement, threats to drill more of our oceans and overturn essential environmental regulations and attacks on the Antiques Act seek to harm the earth and only benefit special interests and profiteers.

In Carpinteria we are blessed with clean air and water and a beautiful oceanfront that could be easily fouled by oil spills or flooded by rising sea levels unless we act and resist quickly and tirelessly to repel these attacks. Protect our Mother Earth, we don’t get a second chance!

We’re families, not stats

This letter is in regard to the April 20 article on the school district quietly passing new intra-district transfer policies for 2017-2018 school year. As a parent of a child who attends Summerland School as an intra-district transfer from Canalino, I can’t help but feel misrepresented. Our family is multi-cultural, so when being asked to identify as hispanic or white on a questionnaire it is difficult to accurately represent our children. Our children identify as Mexican, Scottish, Irish, German, Welsh and the list goes on. We are not a wealthier or whiter family than any of our friends, family or community. We struggle to make ends meet and to make the best choices for our children’s future.

As native Carpinterians, we raise our children proud to live in our community and we choose to live paycheck-to-paycheck to remain here. We applied for intradistrict transfer to Summerland School, the highest rated school in our district, not based on our “whiter” or “wealthier” status—of which we are neither—but based on our family’s personal need as well as our family’s hope to allow our children to be raised in the communities we grew up in while receiving a top-quality education. This afternoon we received a letter as all CUSD families did regarding the school district’s mistake in intra-district transfer policy. Great news! I would hope that any future articles and conversations will accurately represent all intra-district families’ true socioeconomic status.

Disturbances

A local woman, recognized by a watcher, came along the beach and scared the seals in the early morning before a volunteer arrived. Sealwatchers have noted there seem to be a number of early morning disturbances, resulting in few seals on the beach when watchers arrive. Early watchers are now assigned. The seals were also scared by a dog that came into the overlook area, and by a helicopter.

Whales were observed almost every day—often several. Both gray whales and humpback whales are seen.

Family School takes in some culture

The second- and third-grade class at Carpinteria Family School made a field trip to the Santa Barbara museum of Art on April 25. Viewing the current “Story Book Collection,” students saw the stages that illustrations go through before publication, and they also saw the museum’s permanent collection. mcdonald’s on Casitas Pass Road in Carpinteria supplied lunch, which the students enjoyed in the Sunken Garden area of the courthouse near the museum in downtown Santa Barbara. The roundtrip journey, undertaken on the mTd bus, was a fun adventure in and of itself according to teacher Jan Silk and parent chaperones.

Future Farmers of America advisor Ms. Oliva and five FFA students attended a two-day conference in march entitled “26 Hours, Learn by doing” at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The conference was put on by the Cal Poly Agriculture department, and students learned about apple grafting, solar energy, poultry production, engineering, coding and converting manpower to horsepower. Wullbrandt Way—the spur street between Robitaille’s Candy Shop and Señor Frogs on Linden Avenue—holds a place in history as the site of California’s first branch library, opened on Nov. 8, 1910. Appropriately, the site will now be home to a Little Free Library, which is a hutch where passersby can leave or take a book they find interesting. The Friends of the Carpinteria Library, the City of Carpinteria and the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce will be on hand to dedicate the Little Free Library on Friday, May 5, at 5 p.m. Additionally, Carpinteria’s Little Free Library will be registered on the LittleFreeLibrary.com site, complete with a world map that shows the locations of every LFL on the planet.

Setting out from Carpinteria State Beach, a moderately strenuous, 6.5mile, round-trip hike to Rincon will take in the sights from the Bluffs Trail, the Seal Rookery and the long, open beach west of Bates Road. Led

by State Park Interpretive Specialist Leanne Roth, the hike commences on Saturday, May 6, at 1 p.m. at the park entrance on Palm Avenue.

World Dance for Humanity at the Woman’s Club

World Dance for Humanity is a Santa Barbara-based nonprofit helping 25 Rwandan communities lift themselves out of poverty.

Aerial survey reveals leaks Cvn

the summerland shore f r a n d av i s an aerial survey by Heal the Ocean has spotted dramatic and alarming oil plumes in the water off summerland’s shore. the high-tech drone survey yielded several photos that were stitched together to form a broad, visual grid, called an orthomosaic image. Grids from current and subsequent flights can be compared and layered to accurately pinpoint oil trouble spots.

Working through Heal the Ocean (HtO), the aerial drone survey was paid for by the manitou Fund of minnesota. manitou is summerland resident nora mcneely Hurley’s family foundation. alarmed at the quantities of oil washing up on summerland beach, she and her husband, michael Hurley, decided to take positive steps toward finding a solution. the aerial survey is expected to be completed in June or July, after which the final drone map will be used to direct a dive survey of the affected areas. HtO contracted with aqueos subsea for both the aerial and dive surveys, and aqueos brought in Planck aerosystems for the drone work. after the obvious hotspots have been revealed by the orthomosaic images, aqueos divers will use hightech underwater equipment that detects hydrocarbons. information gathered will determine which of the oil leaks are wells that require capping and which are seeps. a century on, summerland is still paying the price for its early oil boom in the form of dozens of improperly abandoned oil wells. When boom turned to bust, those early oil companies and wildcatters stuffed the well casings with rocks or wood (or sometimes nothing at all) and walked away, leaving behind “legacy” wells for future generations to deal with. the leaking wells have bedeviled summerland’s beaches for years. the state has been slow to respond to summerland’s oil-fouled shores. money

On march 30, the california senate budget subcommittee approved the $700,000 requested by state lands to cap the improperly abandoned well. the assembly budget subcommittee considered it on april 26.

Leaking wells cost a fortune to fix, especially those on the ocean floor, as many, if not most, of summerland’s are. (summerland was the site of the first offshore drilling in the Western hemisphere.) the town, the county, and all those who value a clean beach experience, are fortunate that good samaritans like the Hurleys have stepped up to move the process forward.

SB 44 to address abandoned wells

state senator Hannah-beth Jackson’s legislation to designate $2 million per year of state lands funds for cleaning up abandoned, leaking oil wells and their infrastructure is moving forward. in march, the bill was unanimously passed by the senate committee on natural resources and Water. On april 19 sb44 went before the senate environmental Quality committee—so many committees, so much time, and so many hurdles to obtain clean beaches!

The movers and shakers behind efforts to remediate Summerland’s relic oil well stand beneath the drone used to map problem spots.

Stacky’s closes

regulars who’d patronized the beloved snack shack for their sandwiches, burritos, fish and chips and dozens of other menu items were saddened by stacky’s sudden closure last month. the popular eatery had been bought by rusty’s Pizza a couple of years ago, and the local chain’s management had kept it open while they prepared for the transformation. tyler duncan, president of rusty’s, says they could no longer keep the place going and hated having to close it. He reports his company will retain stacky’s same outdoorsy maritime theme, and will be extending the decks. Permits for the changes are moving along and should be available by summer’s end, with construction scheduled to start then, he says. recently i ran into stacky himself, founder richard stackhouse, who was

visiting his last remaining property in town. He told me he’d opened stacky’s in 1985 and had held on to it for 30 years. no wonder we all got so used to its dependable presence in the heart of downtown summerland! at one point during those years stacky owned and operated the café, a hardware store and an antiques store. Guess this makes him kind of a town pillar, but even pillars move, and so is he as soon as his last piece of property sells.

One good thing: the realization that an uneventful life can be a very good thing, indeed.

Every year the Carpinteria Woman’s Club supplies dozens of young artists with motivation to put paint on canvases, clay on pottery wheels and photographs in frames. If you see a couple riding a tandem on the bike path from Carpinteria to Ventura, there’s a good chance the cyclists are Ken and Liz Brown. About twice a week, the pair covers about 30 miles in various directions—both for training and for the SUEY fun of it.

CHS aquatic programs perform swimmingly Freshmen athletes foreshadow a strong future

BY ALONZO OROZCO PHOTOS BY BILL & ROSANA SWING Undefeated in Frontier League meets, the 5-0 Carpinteria High School swim team is on the fast track for a title. Playing host to the League Prelims earlier in the week and Finals today, the Warriors are attempting to write their own history. “This is very exciting … even when I swam in high school—all four years I swam and played water polo—we never won a league championship,” said Carpinteria coach Matt Organista, a Warrior alumnus.

This year ’s squad is led by some young talent, particularly on the girls side, where freshmen Lexi Persoon and Sydney Endow have made quite a splash.

In next week’s CIF Prelims (May 10) and Finals (May 12), Persoon has already qualified for two events: the 500-yard freestyle and the 100 breast stroke. “She’s hovering over the 50 freestyle … and is on the line for the 200 IM (individual medley), I think she’s going to get the 200 IM at League this week,” said Organista, who is also an assistant coach for the girls water polo team.

Meanwhile, Endow is part of the group that recently swam the 200 medley relay that includes Persoon, sophomore Jessica Cruz and yet another freshman,

Sadie Mead, in 2:12.40, a CIF consideration time.

Another coaching gig for Organista is the boys water polo team, which competes in the fall. “It’s always a challenge to get my seniors to do swimming, because they’re water polo players and the only reason they’re swimming is to get good at water polo,” explained Organista. Nonetheless, seniors Sal Briceno and Josh Kitt have stuck around for the final swim season and turned in surprise performances. Younger athletes Nathan Endow and Caleb Classen have also enjoyed a strong season.

The good marks inside the lanes have also translated into success on the water polo front, where Malibu is the school to beat year in and year out. “They (Malibu) haven’t lost a league game in like 20 years, and we were almost the first team to beat them twice (last season),” said Organista, whose team fell to the Sharks 14-10 and 11-7. Carpinteria advanced to the second round of the CIF playoffs where they lost a close one to the secondranked team in Division V, La Canada, by a score of 11-8. Standout Forrest Van Stein also earned the Tri-Valley League’s (TVL) MVP award for the Warriors.

and Connor Van Wingerden make up this group. Sharp-shooter Brian Kliever also returns, as well as dependable and talented sophomore Ali Hamadi, who has been referred to around the pool as “The Future” of Carpinteria water polo.

The girls also had a banner year under coach Lance Hoffman on the water polo

Kalen Sabean should be back, and freshman talent Sadie Mead is another returner with a huge upside. It could be difficult to match the success of this year’s aquatics teams, but the program appears to be in some capable hands.

April 27 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team competed against Santa Clara at River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard, dropping the match with a 511 to the Saints’ 490. “Despite some wind, conditions were favorable,” said Warrior coach Kyle Marme. Santa Clara was led by Aidan Brown, who scored a 94, while freshman Jojo Gonzalez led the Warriors with a 98. Jacob Mata shot a 101, and Caleb Nangle and Alex Cisneros each tallied a 102 to round out the top scores for Carpinteria. The Warriors go into the last league match with a record of 0-6, while the Saints hold a record of 1-5.

May 1 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team competed against the Bishop Diego Cardinals in a nine-hole match, losing by two strokes 253 to 255. Freshmen Jojo Gonzalez and Jacob Mata led the way for the Warriors, shooting 47 and 49 respectively. Leading the field for the Cardinals were Adam Luckhurst with a oneunder par 35 and Matthew Pate with a 37. Carpinteria’s other scores were as follows: Jacob Durtche with a 52, Caleb Nangle a 53, James Irabon a 54 and Gage Dinning rounded out the marks with a 55. The Warriors will head to Santa Paula Thursday, May 4 for their last league match of the season.

Carpinteria United finishes strong in backto-back tourneys

The Carpinteria U14 girls soccer team took home first-place from the April 29-30 Oxnard Sports Festival a week after a third-place finish in the Santa Clarita Showdown. In Oxnard the team played five games and notched five wins over the weekend. They started with a 2-0 shutout against Canyon Country, continued with a 3-1 win against North Oxnard, a 6-0 shutout against Camarillo, a 4-0 shutout against Santa Ynez and wrapped up the weekend with a 4-3 win in an exciting game against Bakersfield. “The bond that these young ladies have developed is amazing. Despite having to play shorthanded due to injuries and illnesses, they continue to pick each other up and work harder to fill those voids,” said coaches, Jorge Reynoso, Kathy Mayer and Pedro Casas.

The Santa Clarita tournament on April 22 and 23 kicked off with temperatures in the mid-90s. Carpinteria United started Saturday with a 1-0 win against Beverly Hills, followed by a 1-0 loss to South Los Angeles. In Sunday morning’s game, the girls bounced back with a 7-0 shutout win against Valencia to earn a second seed in their pool of six. They advanced to the consolation round facing Canyon Country, who Carpinteria United defeated 4-0. A 3-1 record earned the girls a third place finish overall out of twelve teams.

Boys & Girls Club initiates volleyball program

The Boys and Girls Club of Carpinteria is launching Carpinteria’s first youth volleyball league for boys and girls in grades two through eight with tryouts on Saturday, May 6 and Wednesday, May 10. Kids will tryout in age groups as follows: grades two to three, four to six, and six to eight. “We encourage everyone to come and participate, as this is promising to be an exciting new activity for all to enjoy,” says Boys and Girls Club Athletic Director Mike Hayes.

Hayes hopes that volleyball will become another successful athletic program and round out the variety of sports opportunities available for local youth. Boys and Girls Club sports are meant to be fun and enriching for children. Parents or mentors are encouraged to help in coaching, refereeing or other involvement. How life goes right before it goes terribly wrong: part one CVn

a tRaineR’s jouRnal Rob buRke We are all creatures of free will. We were born to create and pursue a life rich in ambition and hope. One of the first things children dream about is their adult profession. Ralphie will tell you that he wants to be a fireman, and Suzy wants to be a nurse. (Yes, I know, gender stereotypes. But for the sake of simplification, let Ralphie and Suzy have their dreams.)

You don’t even have to ask them why, but they’ll tell you that their choices are made based on wanting to help people.

But when we grow up, what happens to those aspirations? Some of us still have them, but they stop becoming our primary focus in life. Where in our lives do we divert our focus to making a paycheck to pay rent or put gas in the car?

As we mature, we lose our childlike curiosity and begin to live in fear—the fear of not having. We know that it is highly unlikely that we’ll find our worldly possessions in a shopping cart but we still fear the homeless. How do we go back to what we embraced as fearless children?

Fear is learned. It’s time to unlearn a fear by doing something you avoid because it scares you. Talk to a homeless person. Go into a convalescent hospital and spend 20 minutes with an elder. Without truly understanding the transformation, you’ll begin to notice how much energy you are wasting by avoiding the things in life that result in increased confidence. You’ll become less risk-averse as you realize that fear doesn’t have to control you as a person.

You’ll also find yourself less anxious in making the right decisions at critical moments in your life.

What does a “right decision” look like? Well, I can’t tell you how it looks, but I can tell you how it feels. The best way to say it is that it feels like peace. It feels strong. It feels like anything else would be a compromise of will.

When I came to Carpinteria, I had not planned to move here. Many of you have heard me tell this story before, but it’s worth telling again to make my point.

It was a beautiful spring day. I had just landed at Santa Barbara International Airport, after flying from Seattle to spend

a long weekend with my friends Shawn and Sheila. As we drove down the 101 the windows and my mind were open. I asked if we could get off of the freeway so that I could see Santa Barbara, so we exited at Upper State Street and proceeded through Downtown into Montecito, Summerland and then Carpinteria.

I was taken by the charming simplicity of “Carp” and asked if we could drive up Linden, so we did. Somehow we ended up turning onto 6th Street to Palm Avenue. We turned toward the beach and on the left, we saw what looked like an industrial complex, but it was actually loft homes built on the site of an old lima bean packing warehouse.

My friend Shawn has always been a real estate broker at heart so he pulled into the lot and ordered us out of the car to take a look. I said that I would stay in the car since I really have no interest in looking at properties, and I wanted to check my email.

About 30 minutes later, Shawn and Sheila appeared out of nowhere running like children. Shawn ordered me out of the car to look at a unit that was for rent.

I resisted since I had no plans to move from Seattle, but seeing how animated they were, I complied.

Angela, the property manager, greeted me and immediately extinguished my reticence. I was struck by how my mind opened and I went into my child mode.

I immediately felt that what-I-want-tobe-when-I-grow-up feeling. My inner child, still fully engaged, led me into the unit. I was in awe with the openness and potential as a training facility. Everything I look at property-wise is based on its potential for supporting a training business.

This had it big time potential. Angela led us upstairs and I couldn’t believe what I was about to do next—I signed a lease.

How did I feel? Holy cow, I’m moving and it never felt so right.

That was seven years ago and today, I still look at my Palm Avenue loft as one of the best decisions I’ve ever made thanks to my fearless child—with a bit of permissive adult supervision.

What happens when things feel right but don’t go as you had imagined? You’ll have to read about the day when everything in my life exploded and fear took over—in next month’s column.

Bus benches get beautified

Carpinteria Girl Scouts teamed up with Carpinteria Beautiful on April 29 to transform bus benches throughout town into art pieces. The annual bus bench painting party has taken place for 20 years, with Bill Crowley at the helm for the last 10. Each spring, Crowley assesses the MTD benches and determines which ones need a new coat of paint. MTD then transports the cumbersome canvases to the Carpinteria Art Center where Crowley repaints them sky blue to serve as a background for volunteers’ detail work. After the benches receive their new lease on life, MTD replaces them.

Hundreds of ticket holders meandered through the homes and gardens of five Carpinteria families whose living spaces sparked inspiration and motivation. Abdel Kader Haidara, a Timbuktu native, became an expert on his city’s ancient manuscripts after reluctantly accepting the mantle of preserver of his own family’s library in Mali in the 1980s. Hammer presents the centuries-old history of a golden age of African scholarship and culture, centered in Timbuktu, facts of which too few westerners are aware. The author then presents the rise of a brutal group of militants in the region after 2008, their conquest of Timbuktu and threat to the records that embody centuries of vibrant Islamic history. He lastly describes the ingenious rescue of the records and transporting them more than 400 miles across the Sahara and on the Niger River to safekeeping in Bamako, Mali’s capital.

Adventure and cultural heritage encompassing religion, history, literature and science over eight centuries clashing with cruelty and intolerance of Jihadi groups arising in the region makes for an unexpected edge-of-your-seat ride to the end of the book.

Paris 1919: American Sylvia Beach opened her iconic bookshop Shakespeare & Co. Joyce, Hemingway, Pound and Fitzgerald wrote, read and sometimes were published there.

Paris 1944: The German occupation closed the shop; Ms. Beach retired.

Paris 1950s: American philanthropist George Whitman opened a bookstore; in 1964 he renamed it Shakespeare and Co. to celebrate the bard’s 400th birthday. It became all that the original store was, plus a free refuge for aspiring writers.

No heat, one loo, one communal kitchen, with 13 cots and lots of floor space for sleeping. Shabby but free in Paris, it housed writers for years. By January 2000, 40,000 had slept there.

Paris 2000: Journalist Jeremy Mercer stepped out of a storm and into this literary wonderland. Thus begins a fascinating memoir of genius, poverty, love, fights and reconciliation—a great tale of books and Paris.

Before Tony Hillerman’s death in 2008, he penned over a dozen crime novels depicting the escapades of Joe Leaphorn, Navajo Tribal Police lieutenant. “The Shape Shifter” was Hillerman’s last novel in the series. Carpinteria Library Book Club will meet on Tuesday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the library’s multipurpose room, 5141 Carpinteria Ave., to discuss the novel. The club, which is open to the public and has been meeting for nearly a decade, recently changed its meeting schedule to the fourth Tuesday of the month. Anyone interested in reading and discussing the book is welcome to attend the club meeting. The book is available for borrow at the library.

Why do animals need dental care?

After all, they don’t brush their teeth in the wild! (At least, no one has observed it.) It is an alarming, perhaps little-known fact, however, that by age 3, almost 75 percent of dogs and cats have some sign of dental disease.

“But, the groomer scrapes my pet’s teeth without anesthesia!” says Mrs. Smith. A common misconception is that anesthesia is the same in all procedures and always a great risk to your pet. A far greater risk is the unlicensed, unmonitored people who do not address the actual cause of dental disease — all the material under the gum line.

What is actually happening in these cases is worse than no care at all. When the tooth is scraped in an alert pet, the trauma to the edge of the gum and the inability to get under it, “packs” the bacteria and plaque further up under the gum line, making it far more likely the pet will develop gingivitis, oral pain and infection.

Please remember, your veterinarian took an oath to do no harm. I hope you trust your DVM enough to know you are not being misled when told these “cleanings” are not doing your pet a service.

The term “periodontal disease” describes advanced disease of the structures that support the teeth. It is an established bacterial infection typically buried well beneath the gum line and is impossible to resolve without deep cleaning under anesthesia. Periodontal disease causes severe pain, and often a pet will suffer for years without uttering a complaint, at least not one we recognize.

The signs of oral pain in dogs are subtle: there may be a slight change in appetite, a quieter attitude or a pattern of “picky” eating. In cats it is even more subtle. Sometimes the only sign you will see in a kitty with a painful mouth is a grumpy attitude and a “do not touch me” sign on his side. This cat may hide, growl, sit hunched, etc. They will almost never chew in a noticeably uncomfortable way or even refuse food.

Periodontal disease always begins with plaque. In order to control plaque,

your pet’s teeth must be mechanically brushed at least every other day, preferably daily. If allowed to accumulate, bacteria make a home in this substance and create gum infections.

Recently I saw a sweet little Cavalier King Charles’ spaniel in the office. His owner was concerned about a slight limp.

As the examination progressed, I noticed a foul odor emanating from his mouth.

Completing my exam, I diagnosed severe gingivitis even though the dog had very white teeth. I scheduled Charlie for a dental cleaning and complete oral evaluation. During his cleaning, we found three abscessed teeth. They all required extraction, and there was bone loss around each. This lesson highlights and reinforces that tooth disease is just the “tip of the iceberg.” Until an animal is gently anesthetized and the mouth examined closely, one simply cannot judge the extent of disease. Charlie became a much happier dog, and his owners are brushing doggy teeth faithfully every day!

The best thing you can do for your pets’ teeth is to have them seen by a veterinary technician or veterinarian every six months. You will be given a program tailored to your individual pet’s needs, and can feel comfortable that he is getting an appropriate quality of care. The good news is that once plaque is removed, a simple daily brushing will keep your pet’s chompers gleaming for years.
