BRIEFLY Juvenile arrested for bus stop assault

A 17-year-old male was arrested on May 4 for the violent assault and robbery of a Carpinteria woman at a bus stop on April 29 in the 4000 block of Via Real. The 27-year-old victim was attacked at approximately 8:50 p.m. while waiting for a bus and was dragged to a nearby field where she was robbed. Following the crime, an investigation by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division identified a 17-year-old Carpinteria resident as the suspect. Detectives arrested the suspect on charges of robbery and kidnapping in order commit a robbery and searched his residence. He was transported to Santa Maria Juvenile Hall where he remains in custody.

Memorial Day event seeks flowers and wreaths

Organizers of the annual Memorial Day Ceremonies at Carpinteria Cemetery are seeking individuals and civic groups who wish to present flowers or wreaths at the event on Monday, May 29. The ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. and will include the presentation of the colors, the singing of the national anthem, a keynote speaker and the reading of the names of local residents who have fallen in America’s wars. Carpinteria’s Island Brewing Company recently added to its trophy wall by securing wins in both the Los Angeles International Beer Competition and the San Diego International Beer Competition. “The pace of expansion in craft beer continues to be extraordinary. There’s never been a better time to be a craft beer drinker,” says owner and founder Paul Wright. “To be recognized in the ever-crowded craft beer space is a win for our whole team and program.”

Using a certified panel of judges in a blind-tasting method, the Los Angeles International Beer Competition, judged April 22 to 23, awarded Island Brewing Company a Silver Medal for the Big Island Barleywine, and a Silver Medal for the Jubilee Ale in the Scotch Ale category, while the barrel-aged Perpetual Saison went on to earn an Honorable Mention.

The San Diego International Beer Competition, April 21 to 22, was open to all breweries regardless of size. Also judged through a blind tasting and Certified Beer Judge format, six months of bourbon barrel aging paid off for the Rigamorole, a Double Brown ale that went on to claim Bronze in the Wood and Barrel Aged Beer category.

“It was our first win in the San Diego Competition, an area known for outstanding beers,” said head brewer Ryan Morrill. “To pick up this award, as well as recognition in LA is an affirmation of the hard work our team puts in. Every day, in every beer.”

Aliso/Summerland principal asked to resign, refuses

Dr. Michelle Fox, principal of Aliso and Summerland schools, was asked by two school board members to resign last Friday, May 5. The administrator initially signed a resignation letter given to her by Carpinteria Unified School District board President Andy Sheaffer and board member Jaclyn Fabre, but later that day withdrew her resignation after Aliso teachers encouraged her to maintain her position.

“The school climate has greatly improved,” said longtime Aliso teacher Felicity Moore of Fox’s leadership. “Everyone is feeling like we’re finally heading in a positive direction.”

District personnel matters are confidential, and Sheaffer said he could not detail the reasons why Fox was asked to resign. He and Fabre both have children at schools led by Fox. The two boardmembers approached Fox about the matter without the support or knowledge of the other three board members, Sheaffer said.

Fox’s duties are divided between the two schools, with 80 percent of her hours spent as principal of Aliso School, and 20 percent as principal of Summerland School. Though Aliso’s faculty has united behind the principal, Summerland School issues may be driving the resignation request. The mother of a Summerland School student reported to CVN that another student with violent and disruptive tendencies has physically harmed and made violent threats to other children on the small school campus. She said that Fox has failed to resolve the safety issue or treat it with the gravity that it deserves.

Superintendent Micheline Miglis, who was abruptly ousted by the school board the day before the start of the 2016-2017 school year. That action resulted in outrage by staff members and parents left in the dark as to the board’s reasons.

Likewise, the unexplained request for Fox to resign ignited a passionate response in Aliso teachers. According to teacher Felicity Moore, the staff told Fox, “We don’t want to be here if you’re not here.”

Moore said that Sheaffer and Fabre, along with Acting Superintendent Jamie Persoon, sat in on a meeting with the incensed Aliso staff. Teachers were told that complaints against Fox had been made by about a dozen parents. The staff countered that Aliso boasts 800 happy parents, Moore said.

“People are really fired up on this and are determined to help their principal,” said Moore. “There’s quite a lot of talk about a recall (on board members).”

Literature circulated by Aliso teachers stated that Fox initially resigned “under duress” and with the belief that Sheaffer and Fabre were acting on behalf of the full board. Sheaffer said that Fox was not coerced into signing the resignation and that there are no plans to terminate her. He said that the request involved no disciplinary action.

Fox declined to speak with Coastal View News on the matter, aside from noting that she is inspired by the support of her staff and will continue to focus on what’s best for students and teachers at her two schools.

Council votes to choke commercial cannabis

Five-year finances leave city money hungry

A look into the financial crystal ball on May 8 had the Carpinteria City Council predicting it would have to find a means to generate more revenue in the near

In a temporary move to iron out how legalized commercial sales and growth of cannabis will develop in the city, the council on May 8 voted unanimously to enact a 45-day moratorium on all commercial cannabis activity. Medical marijuana dispensaries and delivery services had already been barred in city limits, and the new moratorium puts collectives and cooperatives under the commercial umbrella to put a hold on any cash-forcannabis transactions or operations. The moratorium can be extended for up to 22 months.

Currently, there are no legitimate medical cannabis collectives or cooperatives operating in the city, but the moratorium is a move to preempt them or any commercial activity ahead of when state regulations are issued to legalize commercial sales for recreational marijuana use. A state framework for legalization is expected by Jan. 1, 2018 or possibly earlier.

City Manager Dave Durflinger explained that the time is now for the city to decide on local regulation, which it is free to do under the new law, in much the same way the county is currently evaluating its approach to the newly legal, highinducing plant.

Given the forum to talk pot, many city residents showed up to implore the city to confront the county over the proliferation of greenhouse growing on the city-county border. Residents argued that odors know no borders, and they described the overwhelming skunk smell they’re forced to endure as an issue of public health.

In public comment, John Culbertson called it “a radical change in quality of life.”

Carpinteria Valley Association President Mike Wondolowski minced no words in his criticism of the debilitating stench in comparing it to having your dog, cat and couch permanently sprayed by skunk. He also detailed anecdotes relayed by Carpinteria High School administrators who say they have to assure visitors to campus for sporting events that the unmistakable odor of marijuana is not coming from students; rather it’s the neighboring greenhouses.

Even though the city has no official say in what grows in the county, the council signaled that it’s ready for a fight and will bend ears at the county in hopes that county decision makers, including Carpinteria resident and First District Supervisor Das Williams, will mandate odor controls among other things when drawing up new regulations for greenhouse pot growing. The city has already sent letters to the county, noted Durflinger, but has not heard a response. Durflinger was directed to try again, and council members offered to jump on board on behalf of what they classified as a public health issue.

future. A presentation of the city’s longterm financial plan foretold that over five years the city’s finances would remain steady, but the current revenue stream is insufficient for capital works projects and maintaining infrastructure like roadways.

City Administrative Services Director John Thornberry said, “As expected, the long-term financial plan shows a gap between revenues and expenditures for the long-term capital and critical services needs of the community.”

In a detailed presentation, consultant William Statler said the city was in good shape and projected to be in the black by roughly $650,000 annually if it continued with its general operating budget only; however, if incorporating already identified capital improvement projects and $950,000 annually for road and other infrastructure maintenance the shortfall would be around $1.3 million each year for five years. In total, the city has identified $11 million in capital improvement projects and maintenance over the next five years.

Statler said since the outlook is relatively good for the general fund budget if revenue growth from sales, bed and property taxes remain steady, now is the time to potentially tap into reserves to accomplish some of the capital improvement and maintenance needs. Still, not everything on the city’s wish list, which includes a $2.1 million renovation of City Hall and overhaul of Parking Lot #2, could be covered by projected revenues.

“It’s a question of priorities,” Statler said. “What are the most important things to spend money on?” He said the report does not aim to instruct where dollars should go, rather it “identifies what the key factors will be” when making those decisions.

Also looming in the financial picture are spikes in costs for pensions and retiree healthcare. Statler identified costly increases for employer contributions to Calpers as an expense that will continue

to grow over five years partially due to expected interest returns dropping from 7.5 to 7 percent for Calpers investments.

Government throughout the state is contending with the contributions increase adjusted to reflect lower return rates.

For fiscal year 2016-2017, Calpers contributions accounted for 17 percent of the city’s payroll. It’s projected to rise to 27.5 percent by 2021-2022.

Both Statler and Thornberry outlined three methods or any combination of them the city can use to raise revenue to meet its capital improvement and maintenance needs. The city could spend down its reserves, finance projects with loans or ask voters for a tax increase.

Statler said spending from reserves for one-time projects or to pay down unfunded liabilities related to retiree healthcare and pensions could be wise given the projected surpluses over operating budget for the next five years.

Also, the city is currently debt free, so the option of seeking financing for the City Hall renovation could be viable, he said. He provided some detail on how the city could evaluate the favorability of a proposed sales tax increase, which would require voter approval.

Councilman Brad Stein said, “We’ve been talking about unfunded General Fund subsidies over the last few years and every chance we get we’ll have to bring this before the community. This is where we’re ultimately going, where the rubber meets the road.”

Councilman Al Clark is less convinced that identified capital improvement projects are necessary. “I’m not sure I want to fund (the projects) in the next few years or ever,” he said.

Statler’s overarching recommendation from the long-term financial plan was that now is the time to invest in capital improvements or paying down unfunded liabilities whether through existing means or finding new revenue.

I served on the school board for eight years and understand many of the issues legal, administrative and routine (that the board deals with). Some of the actions that have taken place under this board bewilder me. The first was hiring a superintendent last year who, in my opinion, was not qualified and after one year in office was fired. She had a three-year contract, and received a two-year compensation of over $200,000 to leave. How sad and irresponsible of our board. Now we see board members asking our Aliso School principal to leave without following a legal process.

And the most recent action, hopefully not the worst of all, was hiring a superintendent for next year who, in my opinion, is totally unqualified to serve our district, from what I read in the newspapers. Most of her career has been on the East Coast with a limited or non-Latino population compared to Carpinteria with a 70-percent Latino population. She was also involved in a suit with Special Education in the Santa Barbara School District prior to her departure. She is also older than 60 years, ready for retirement. The board bypassed other candidates who were totally qualified to lead our district.

I am hopeful that we can get some community members to get involved with the political system in the school district and get our present members out and make some positive contributions for our kids.

Dr. Michelle Fox, principal of Aliso and Summerland elementary schools, is a person passionate and committed to the support of each and every student, family and employee of her schools. She employs her superior skills for communicating openly, transparently and frequently with students, families and staff, maintaining an open-door policy at all times. She provides excellent leadership for faculty and support staff with regard to school safety, policy and educational strategies.

She provides opportunities to staff for professional development, is a strong collaborator with community and maintains sensitivity to the needs of each and every student in her schools. She brings much needed professionalism, integrity and compassion to her position as principal of both schools.

Since her appointment as principal of Aliso School she has brought an at-

mosphere of cohesive collaboration and enthusiastic positivity, and maintains a genuine appreciation of the educational community of this school. The morale of faculty and support staff has risen sharply in comparison to the time prior to her appointment. As a longtime CUSD employee, it is my considered opinion that she has had an overwhelmingly positive effect on the educational compass of Aliso School. It is with great enthusiasm that I look forward to many years with Dr. Michelle Fox at the helm of Aliso Elementary School.

Unfinished business

Open letter to Carpinteria City Council: There is some unfinished business regarding Carpinteria becoming a “sanctuary city.” We wanted to remind you of this.

Several weeks ago, you decided to wait and see how things unfolded regarding new government immigration enforcement policies before having to make that decision! We think you’ve had more than enough time to study the issue and make a decision! It is not good to delay this action any longer nor is it going to go away! Our entire community is depending upon you to protect us from unjust and unconstitutional immigration deportation policies approved by the Trump administration.

Unfortunately, this council has a long history of delay, ignore and postpone when it comes to making the important decisions regarding the future and welfare of our community. You are very good on grand openings, awards and parades, but falter greatly when having to make any life-altering decisions regarding our city. You have made very few decisions or plans to address the greatest threats to our community: climate change, global warming, sea level rise and now protection from inhumane deportation policies.

I ran for city council hoping to change all of that, but I lost and I am afraid that things will not change until this council finds the courage to face down these grave threats facing our community and nation. I am truly concerned that you may not fully understand the enormity and the consequences of not comprehending the unprecedented challenges we now face as a community and country. Becoming a sanctuary will at least give the undocumented among us some hope from being unjustly taken from their families.

George William Manges, Jr. 12/11/1938 – 4/22/2017

George William Manges, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Carpinteria at the age of 78 on April 22, 2017. He was the only child born on Dec. 11, 1938 to George and Helen Manges in Troutville, Va. He grew up in the countryside of Botetourt County, Va. and graduated from Fincastle High School. He was active as a Future Farmer of America. As a young adult, he relocated to Santa Monica, Calif. where he met his first wife, Virginia.

They raised their two daughters, Shannon and Carolyn in La Crescenta, Calif.

George was a surveyor for the City of Glendale and enjoyed fishing, camping, water-skiing and hunting. He graduated from the University of Redlands with his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.

With his second wife, Sharon, George lived in Tujunga, Calif. where they enjoyed their time as members of the Kadidle Hoppers Square Dance Club. His adventurous and protective inclinations led him to become a Los Angeles County Sheriff Reserve Deputy on the Montrose Search and Rescue Team. Eventually, they retired to Carpinteria, Calif. where they appreciated living near the beach and traveling. He held occasional jobs as security guard, carpenter, pigeon hauler and especially … Grandpa. Relaxing at home included puzzles and board, card and dice games.

George is survived by his wife, Sharon, her four children Bill, Bobbie, Kathy and Mike, and their families, and his two daughters Shannon and Carolyn and their families. He will also be lovingly missed by 12 grandchildren, four greatgrandchildren, two great-nieces, one great-nephew, many cousins and friends.

His compassionate way with animals, kindness toward people, and practical nature in all things botanical and mechanical will always be affectionately remembered.

Donald Lewis LaFevers

Donald Lewis LaFevers passed peacefully in his sleep early Friday morning, May 5, 2017, at the age of 84. He was an Air Force veteran.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nysa LaFevers, and their children Mark LaFevers (Robin), Kathryn Evans (Charles) and Glenn LaFevers (Jeanene), grandchildren Adam LaFevers (Ashley), Eric LaFevers, Celeste Evans, Austin Evans, Ryan LaFevers (Amber) and Jake LaFevers, and great-granddaughter McKenna LaFevers.

Don loved the ocean and enjoyed boating, fishing and diving with his friends and family. In decades past he enjoyed off road motorcycle riding in areas including the Bluffs, known as the Thunderbowl in that era. Don enjoyed playing tennis, and was an active member of the Carpinteria Lions Club until his illness.

Don was preceded in death by his father, mother and beloved brother David.

He will be remembered and missed for his cheerful smile, generous heart, and loving support towards family and friends.

A private memorial will be held at sea.

Channel Islands researcher to speak at Friends of the Carpinteria Library event Karana, the main character of Scott O’Dell’s “Island of the Blue Dolphins,” has captivated the minds of hundreds of thousands of elementary school students since the book’s publication in 1960. Researcher and writer Susan Morris likewise became infected with a thirst for more information about the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island, the young Nicoleño woman who survived alone on the island for years before being relocated to the mainland in the mid-1800s. Morris has conducted three decades of research on the Channel Islands, participating in field studies in archaeology, paleontology, geology and biology on seven of the eight islands. She was the Principle Investigator of a cave-associated archaeological site survey in Wreck Canyon on Santa Rosa Island.

Morris will present on the Lone Woman’s rich history at the Friends of the Carpinteria Library’s Annual Meeting on the evening of Wednesday, May 17 at the Carpinteria Community Church, 1111 Vallecito Road. The cost to attend is $10 for non-members and free for members.

CVN: What inspired your passion for researching the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island?

Susan Morris: As a fourth-grade student in a California elementary school, I was captivated when I first read about the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island, depicted as the resourceful Karana in “Island of the Blue Dolphins.” As an adult, I was fascinated when I read eyewitness accounts about the historic events that took place on San Nicolas Island during the first half of the 19th century. The Lone Woman’s story, and that of her people, is complex and even more intriguing than the simplified version that Scott O’Dell crafted.

CVN: The Lone Woman has been studied for many years. How do researchers like yourself continue to add to her story?

SM: Historical researchers look for original sources with primary information that can add new details to the story of the Lone Woman and the people who touched her life. Previously overlooked Mexican era documents about life in Alta California are a rich source of first person accounts about the Lone Woman, her people and the people who interacted with them. Documents such as Catholic Church sacramental records—baptismal, marriage and burial entries—have proved to be excellent sources of new information, as have early Mexican, California and American census records for Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Others that have yielded exciting new clues include Russian American Company correspondence, an Alaskan Native deposition, a

Looking for new evidence to answer research questions about the Lone Woman and her people is an evolving process.

Whenever new records are found that are relevant to the research, they almost always point to other sources of information that should be examined.

CVN: In your opinion, what are the most interesting new findings related to the Lone Woman?

SM: I can’t discuss the most interesting finding related to the Lone Woman just yet, because the historical research is ongoing and has not been published.

The new information changes the Lone Woman’s narrative entirely. What I can say is that the recent archaeological discoveries on San Nicolas Island, such as the 75-foot-long Lone Woman’s Cave, and the multicultural objects found in the redwood box cache, have provided an extraordinary opportunity to learn about the Lone Woman, the people of San Nicolas Island, and quite possibly, some of the earliest people to inhabit the Channel Islands.

CVN: How different is San Nicolas Island now from when the Nicolenos lived there?

SM: Today, San Nicolas Island contains U.S. Navy facilities, including a small airport and airstrip. Parts of the island look vastly different when compared to how the landscape appeared to the Lone Woman and her people. But there are sectors of the island where that modern, high tech presence isn’t obvious. You’re able to get a sense in some locales of what it might have been like for the Lone Woman to spend most of her life there.

CVN: Why do you find it so important to examine the Lone Woman’s chapter of the past so closely?

SM: The Lone Woman’s story is emblematic of the treatment of native people in California. Her story, made dramatic and compelling by Scott O’Dell in “Island of the Blue Dolphins,” should encourage us to evaluate how the native people lost their land, their livelihoods and nearly lost their lifeways when foreigners arrived on the west coast of North America.

The treatment of the native people who lived in California for hundreds of years is something that we need to acknowledge and make reparations for, wherever possible.

SM: There are many highlights from my time exploring the Channel Islands. Here are a few: • Surveying dozens of sea caves and terrestrial (dry) caves on San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa, San Nicolas and San Clemente islands • Surveying and mapping the Daisy Cave archaeological site on San Miguel Island • Excavating and illustrating the nearlyintact Pygmy mammoth fossil on Santa Rosa Island • Locating the baptismal record for a 5-year-old Nicoleno boy, given the name Tomas Guadalupe, in Los Angeles Plaza Church records • Locating the burial record for a 22-yearold Nicolena woman, given the name Maria Magdalena, in Los Angeles Plaza Church records CVN: Has your research on native peoples influenced the way you approach your own life?

“The Lost City of Z” cVn

duncan’s reel deal m at t d u n c a n “The Lost City of Z” is an adventure tale, and a true(ish) one at that. The exploits it tells of easily rival those of Magellan, Earhart, Cousteau, Lewis and Clark, and Ahab. It’s the stuff of old, crackly, black-and-white newsreels about men in safari hats finding hidden temples in the jungle, with the exciting voiceover spinning yarns of exotic intrigue, ceaseless peril and the almost unbearable titillation of what’s next—what’s out there.

In this episode, our hero is Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam). You wouldn’t have guessed it, but this magnificent specimen started off as an ordinary British army officer in the early 20th century, with no medals on his lapel and no obvious paths to greatness.

Until, that is, he is commanded to report to the Royal Geographical Society for an assignment. There they tell Fawcett that he is to go on an expedition to South America—Bolivia, to be precise—to help resolve a border dispute and (ahem) maybe even make England a little coin in the rubber trade.

Fawcett doesn’t love the idea at first— especially because he has a wife and young son—but the siren song of adventure soon bends his ear, and the decision is made.

So he sets off for the Amazon. Unfortunately, it’s not a very pleasant place. What was billed as a vigorous romp through the jungle turns out to be malarial hell.

Fawcett seems to regret the change of lifestyle, but like a good Englishman, he keeps calm and carries on. Snakes, piranhas, panthers and poison arrows vie to expel him from the jungle, but Fawcett soldiers on.

Just as he and his team (as well as us viewers) are at their wits’ end, they stumble across some evidence of a mysterious lost civilization—one that looks to be far more advanced than anyone thought possible. This is intriguing, to be sure, but since at this point priority number one is not dying, the lost civilization remains undiscovered.

Quick cut and they’re back home (And, yes, I do mean quick cut—there are a bunch of these abrupt, continentspanning jumps between the jungle and the English countryside in the movie).

Big sigh of relief, right? Well, actually, as much as he likes his wife and (now) two kids, it does not take long before Fawcett is itching to get back out there. He wants to find—nay, he needs to find—that lost civilization, which he calls “Z” (“Zed” if you’re British).

Z thus becomes his white whale. Fawcett says he wants to rewrite the history books; he aims to show that white men are not the sole bearers of dignity; he hopes to upend the dogma and bigotry of Western colonialism. That’s all very noble, of course. But it’s hard not to see all that bluster as cover for his thirst for the unknown—for his magnetic attraction to discovering new things and enduring hardships in naught but the name of adventure.

But, as with all white whales, there are obstacles. Skeptics, governments, wars, economies, bigots and even families all stand between Fawcett and his lost city of Z. As I said, this is the stuff of legend—of yarns spun in old newsreels.

Yet this yarn is spun a bit differently.

Whereas those old newsreels gleam of Classic Hollywood—of romance, hope, optimism and a world full of goodness— “The Lost City of Z” takes on a decidedly more realist tone. The peril isn’t reducible to mere excitement; it isn’t cartoonish and unimposing a la “Indiana Jones.” The aches, pains and conflicts in this movie feel real, and at times, unbearable.

This actually had me worried in terms of the tone of the movie. The question is: Does realism pair well with an adventure tale of this sort? One could make the case that by portraying the horrors of nature, and by complicating the virtue of our hero’s motives with the fact that he abandoned his family, and by showing how nasty people, governments and other organizations can be, this movie yields a more complex, nuanced version of an adventure story. Fine. But these features necessarily dilute so much of what is appealing about Earhart, Cousteau, and yes, even Indiana Jones—which is their pure spiritedness, their simple, totally uncomplicated and completely unencumbered drive to get out there and discover.

So I was worried about “The Lost City of Z”. I thought, “This movie can’t have it both ways—it can’t be both a cracklynewsreel adventure tale and a hyperrealistic drama.” But, by the end, I got on board. Partly because the movie ends up shedding its realist yoke. But also, realistic or not, the last quarter of the movie just does a really nice job of striking that pleasing chord of great adventures. It makes you get it. It makes you see the point of setting sail. It makes you feel like it’s worth getting out there and doing it, whatever “it” may be.

“The Lost City of Z” is rated PG-13 for violence, disturbing images, brief strong language and some nudity.

Ellen Stoddard’s long and illustrious career as director of Lou Grant Parent-Child Workshop is about to come to a close, and her many, many fans refused to let her ride off into the sunset without a proper goodbye.

As such, hundreds of former and current families of the school gathered on May 6 at the 6th Street campus to celebrate Stoddard’s 29 years of kind and loving education for both parents and children. In coming weeks Coastal View News will have more on the legacy Stoddard leaves and what’s to come for the cooperative.

Debbie murphy I interviewed Joaquin Gonzalez in his Gonzo Cycles bike shop on Carpinteria Avenue. He was there with his two sons Joaquin and Francisco who were busy doing homework and helping move the bikes back in the shop at closing time.

Joaquin was born in Argentina, and his first language was Spanish. The family has lived in Carpinteria since 2010.

Joaquin is one of the Rincon Riders, a group of mountain bikers who ride the Franklin Trail.

Do you remember when you first rode a bike?

I remember when my training wheels came off, and that was it. I pushed in hard, the bike folded in and I hit the ground really hard. From that day on I started jumping around on a bike. I’m the third of three brothers, and they would get me to do stuff. I was little and they would make me do crazy things. I remember jumping into a pool with my bike. So I became more of a biker than they did.

Much later when I lived in Tahoe I started biking in the mountains.

Describe the experience of riding up the Franklin Trail That is the challenge, and that is what makes the reward of the downhill. The downhill is the reward of the effort it takes to get to the top. It is hard. You have to push it. Yet it is what gets you out onto the trail and up into the mountains. It is much harder than walking, until you figure out a few things and get good at it. It is also much faster than hiking. I can leave my shop, go up the mountain to the gate and back down in less than an hour.

We do it mostly to go down the hill.

So what is the ride on the way down?

It is super fun, just fun. We try not to get hurt. There is a bit of adrenaline. We share the trail with hikers so we always need to be in control. Because of the Rincon Riders, my buddies and I, we try to spread the idea of being respectful and sharing the trail. We have the skills to ride the trail.

A lot of hikers don’t know that we are in control. We cannot do what we do and be out of control. Some hikers think we are going to run them over, yet we really have control of the bikes. We are all pretty good mountain bikers, so we keep it safe for us and for the hikers. We look ahead to see what is in front of us—people and dogs—and we know the blind corners. We know that sometimes we scare people, yet we can always stop the bikes. It looks fast yet have control and can share the trail.

Do you always have bells on your bikes?

Here, it is the rule to have a warning bell on your bike. That’s the one thing, sometimes the tourists don’t understand, yet we want everyone to use a bell.

That’s why we put the bell box right after the first ramp where the fence ends. My buddies and I bought the bells, and we put them in the box for people to use. We supply the bells and refill the box. We ask people to borrow them and return them to the box. If you want to keep the bell, we ask you to drop off $5 here at the shop to help fund this.

Can you use any bike to ride up the Franklin Trail?

Yes, yet make sure it is tuned up because the bikes take a lot of abuse on a trail. There is a lot of pressure on the bike—it’s grinding. Any bike can do it, even cruisers, yet they have to be in good shape. It’s the going up that’s hard on the bikes. Any bike can come down. If you’ve never done it before, definitely go down gradual. You can get hurt, even I have a concussion right now from a fall about a month ago. Don’t push it the first time— just learn your way up the mountain. It’s the same with any kind of sport.

How are mountain bikes different?

They are made to smooth out the trail, to climb better. They have better suspension. They take a lot of abuse. Any bike that is not built for the abuse won’t last.

Everything on the bike needs to be stronger. We ride these bikes hard and they have to hold up, cause they are not cheap.

You have done work on the trail with the Rincon Riders?

Yes, we have helped on the whole thing. We helped cut through the brush of the third phase. My friends show up more than me cause I’m often stuck here at my shop. My last time doing it, we got rid of lots of stumps and rock to make it smoother.

What’s great about the Franklin Trail?

Many other trails like Tunnel and Romero in Santa Barbara and Montecito are much more technical and consequential. However, the Franklin Trail is right here. I get out of my house or the shop and the trail is right here. Not having to drive is the best.

I have been up to the top of the CRV road from the Franklin Trail twice. The third phase is not that bike-able yet. It is too soft still and needs to get packed down over time. There is a lot of work going on up there now, so it will get better. It is pretty exciting. Just from your home here you can get up into the mountains. My next thing is to go up and over the mountains and stay back there a few nights. Bike packing is fun and I did some in Tahoe. Here it is harder because it is steep.

Any changes you would like to see on the trail?

No. It’s good, and it’s getting better.

Somehow the flow for bikes is better now that the trail has been used a lot.

I go out to other trails in Santa Barbara and Montecito, and then I come back to this one and it is great. It is steep. It is a challenge. It’s right here. I can go up on my lunch break in 45 to 50 minutes. That’s the beauty of being able to get a quick ride and get some exercise. It is always steep and tough. It never gets easier. Now it has really gotten better. Over time some of the loose soil has washed off and rocks are showing, and the trail now gives a better ride.

Anything else you would like to say?

I’m a mountain biker. That’s one of the reasons I opened a bike shop. I ride bikes.

I live on a bike. I try not to drive my car.

In this town, it is pretty easy. The town is just a mile long. I want to encourage people to just use their bikes.

We found this town out of luck. We were driving and needed gas on the way back to Tahoe. We had never heard about this town. It had a nice feeling. We liked it a lot, so we came back, then came back again and started thinking about leaving Tahoe. Carp is laid back and small.

With my shop, I am trying to share what I think about bikes and how it can be living in a beautiful place like this—how enhanced life can be if you stay out of the car. You can walk anywhere here or bike anywhere here. It is more peaceful. It is

When you get a bike at a young age you can just go. In this town, you can go all over the place: to a friend’s house, for ice cream or candy, the beach and the Franklin Trail. You can go from the Franklin Trail to the ocean without getting in the car. That is priceless.

Trail Note: Be sure to stop at the Franklin Trail kiosk to see the new display of castings of animal paw prints from the trail. You can even see how a salamander’s tail drags on the ground. It’s a great display of who shares the trail with us.

Arts Center kicks off Whimsical Wednesday excursions

Beginning June 7 and continuing through summer, art excursions will depart from the Carpinteria Arts Center, 855 Linden Ave., on the first Wednesday of each month.

Venues and dates may change depending on programming, but the emphasis will be on trips to local galleries and museums, as well as destinations in Los Angeles.

Candaele takes the reins of CHS football

Former defensive coordinator Rick Candaele has been anointed as head coach and will lead the Carpinteria High School football team into its future.

Much like his predecessor Ben Hallock, Candaele brings a wealth of experience to the position, having coached at the high school and/or collegiate level for 49 years. He took a turn as head coach at UCSB and oversaw the Claremont McKenna College football program also. He coached the CHS girls basketball team as well, from 1993 to 1995.

Born in Vancouver, Canada, Candaele enjoys a lifelong connection to sports.

His parents were always into sports with father Bob Candaele a hockey goalie and mother Helen O’Callaghan a women’s professional baseball player for the Fort Wayne (Indiana) Daisies. The family moved to California when Rick was a youth, and he and his four brothers attended Lompoc High School. “My mother said I had to keep busy, so I was out there playing football and basketball and baseball and couldn’t have enjoyed it more,” said Rick. He excelled in all three sports, and was named Student Athlete of the Year in 1965 and later became a member of the school’s Hall of Fame in 2000.

With his wife Maren, son Coley and daughter Kirsten, the family moved to Carpinteria where Coley and Kirsten also became outstanding athletes. Kirsten lettered in three sports: basketball, track and volleyball. Coley became the state champion in the mile, and won three straight CIF football titles under Lou Panizzon and Hallock in 1987, 1988 and 1989. “The coaches here, and the teachers, did a great job with my kids,” said Rick.

In fact, the Candaele name is well known in the sports world. Coley coached the last Warrior football championship team in 2002 and more recently for Vista Murrieta along with back-toback State titles in track and field. Kirsten won multiple championships in basketball at Juan Lagunas Soria School in Oxnard. Rick was also an All-American in football and basketball at the College of Idaho during his playing days. in Claremont, he also brought into the program five former Carpinteria alums: Ryan Cuttler, Gary Feramisco, Ryan Gocong, Aaron Gonzales and Ben Scott, who became All-League for the Stags.

With his new post on Foothill Road, Rick spoke of three goals he has for the Warrior football program: to keep “Carp” kids in “Carp,” develop all the kids that he has and win a league championship.

His first two goals seem to be already a work in progress. “I think the youth football guys are doing a great job, the Junior Warriors, I’d like to give them a big shout out, Tony Jimenez and (Jason) Whittenton,” said Rick of the two coaches of the Junior Warrior Football Program, which began last year. And, with Carpinteria qualifying for the CIF playoffs the last two years, his goal of a league championship could become a reality in the near future.

On April 28 at approximately 8:45 a.m. a deputy responded to a call from a motel on Via Real about a man who had gained entry to a room and stayed overnight without paying. Maintenance work was being performed on the second floor, and none of the rooms were being rented. When a worker attempted to enter one of the rooms on the second floor, he found the door was locked from inside with the deadbolt. The maintenance worker confirmed that the room had not been rented, then opened the door with a master key and found a man inside.

The worker attempted to stall him until police could arrive, but the man left after saying that he was staying in the room.

Burnt foil, consistent with drug use, was found in the room, and the worker said that the man he’d spoken with “looked like he was tweaking.” Having taken a picture of the man with his cell phone, the worker showed the image to the responding deputy.

A second deputy made contact with a man on Via Real who matched the description of the man in the photo the maintenance worker had taken. A records check revealed that the man had two warrants for his arrest, and the deputy took him into custody. Advising the maintenance worker to “keep an open mind,” the deputy at the motel told him that the suspect he was going to see (when the other deputy brought him to the motel) may not be the same person he saw in the room, and that “it was just as important to free innocent people as it was to identify guilty parties.” When the maintenance worker saw the man under arrest in the back of the second deputy’s patrol car he said, “That’s him.”

The man spoke with the maintenance worker and admitted to staying at the motel. The deputy who responded to the motel confirmed that the man in the back of the patrol car matched the cell phone picture he’d seen on the maintenance worker’s phone. The man was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Probationers

On May 2 at approximately 3 a.m. a deputy observed a white VW sedan parked in a vacant lot near the Sheffield Drive off-ramp of Highway 101 with its parking lights on. Due to recent criminal activity in the area, the deputy got out of his patrol car and approached the parked vehicle. A woman was asleep in the front passenger seat, and a man sitting in the driver’s seat made “a furtive movement” according to the report. The deputy gave the man a command to show his hands, and he complied.

The couple said that they did not have permission to park on the property, and that both of their wallets had been stolen with their IDs inside. The man and woman wrote their identification information in the deputy’s notebook, and the deputy asked if either of them was on probation or parole. The man said he was on probation for narcotics sales, and the woman said that she was recently in court and believed that she was also on probation. When asked if there was anything in the vehicle that would violate their probation, the woman said there may be some paraphernalia from the last time law enforcement had the car impounded. The couple consented to a search of the car, and the deputy found a syringe loaded with suspected heroin in the driver’s sidedoor pocket.

The man was placed under arrest and he spoke about his recent relapse with opiates after finishing the STP program at county jail. Additional syringes were found in the gear shift area of the vehicle, and the woman was also arrested. The vehicle was towed, and the man and woman were transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Banks lauded for long years of community service

At a reception in her honor, Terry Hickey Banks thanks the crowd for attending and supporting local public schools. the may 4 event held at board of education president Andy Sheaffer’s home raised funds for Carpinteria Education Foundation while recognizing banks’ 21 years of service to the community as a member of the school board. Banks was appointed to the board in 1995 after another longtime member, Jim Gray, stepped down. She followed in the footsteps of her father, Glenn Hickey, whose 20-year tenure on the board had ended in the early 1980s.

Sunset Rotary Club threw a surprise party last weekend for Betty Brown, who turns 90 on may 13. Fifty guests gathered for a party at her home to enjoy live music by the Rincons and Bernie & Friends, friendship, and to revel in Brown’s milestone.

Chef James Sly surprised Brown with a special coconut birthday cake. Party guests were treated to a spectacular aerial display courtesy of Carpinteria’s Green Growers.

A banner plane cruised Padaro beach and downtown Carpinteria to mark the occasion, while an aerobatic plane performed tricks above the ocean. Dutch club members vigorously serenaded Brown with a native birthday song.

Carpinteria’s new Little Library officially opens

Supporters of libraries big and small turned out last Friday for the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s ribbon cutting to mark the opening of a new Little Library on Wullbrandt Way. The new library—an elevated wooden cabinet that houses a small collection of donated books—can be used by anyone interested in grabbing a new read, dropping one off, or both. Friends of the Carpinteria Library sponsored the new lending library.

Fast forward to June of 1964 when my mother, two months shy of having her third child and about to take a short trip with my father, wrote a somewhat irreverent letter to my grandmother about how to care for my brother and me. A seven-page letter, and I finally learned some of what they were saying about “us.”

“Dear Momma, Since the language barrier is so great with James and Lisa, especially Lisa, you might like to know a couple of items about their day so as to make you aware, so to speak, of what the hell they want.

My first lessons on the ties that bind together mothers and daughters came from watching my mother and grandmother.

When they lived miles apart from each other they were on the phone several times a week, and when only one house separated theirs, they were in each other’s kitchen daily talking, sharing, laughing.

Sometimes whispering, to my young chagrin.

What are they saying about us?! Still, they were the center of our lives, and when I was much older I discovered my grandmother was passing along the relationship she had shared with her mother.

When my greatgrandmother Agnes was 19, she married a boy from a neighboring farm. As my grandmother said, “there was some humma-humma going on,” because six months later she was born. Agnes went on to have four more daughters, but by the time she was 31 she was widowed with five young girls to care for on her own. CUSD qualifies for free meals

Starting in the 2017/18 school year, all registered CUSD students will be able to eat both breakfast and lunch for no cost beginning on the first day of school, Aug. 22, 2017. The district has been approved for a government program which helps communities streamline meal counting and funding procedures and ensure that no child goes hungry while at school. Other districts that have implemented this program have seen many benefits including increased attendance, classroom performance and no need for lunch account balances. In order to fund the program, CUSD needs as many students as possible to participate, and will ask all parents/guardians to fill out a lunch application at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year along with enrollment paperwork. Aliso School Lions squared off for five weeks this spring during an ongoing lunchrecess Four Square Tournament. Four Square—a game where four players bounce a ball between four squares until a player misses or hits the ball out-of-bounds and is eliminated—is less about raw power than it is finesse.

Fifth-graders Isaias Campuzano, Dominic Castillo, Anthony Mendoza, Andres Quezada and Danny Velazquez are adept at “Showcase Moves,” instructor Jacquelyn Geary noted. “I have never seen Four Square played like these guys can play,” Geary said. “They fake a hit with one hand and softly hit the ball with the other hand, and they are on their knees returning hits.” The overall champions, Servando Campuzano and Jasmine Avila, showed up to play most consistently. Spirit Awards for superior sportsmanship and fair play went to third-grader Elle McMahon, fourth-grader Kate Ackerman and fifth-grader Grace Thompson.

There were numerous conflicts on the Four-Square courts leading up to the winter break, with students making up their own rules for the game. Aliso School Principal Dr. Michelle Fox asked Geary to hold a tournament, and Geary researched the rules and had students practice the game under the official guidelines after the break.

When the tournament commenced, there were far fewer conflicts as students were all subject to the same rules. “The tournament’s top finishers learned about showing up when you are supposed to,” Geary added, “and then trying your best each time you show up.”

4-H members make their mark in Santa Barbara

Members of the Playa Del Sur 4-H Livestock Team enjoyed their week at the Santa Barbara Fair & Expo.

The group got to show their animals, share their knowledge and educate fair goers about their livestock projects. Through posters and talks team members explained what they have learned and what they enjoy about raising animals. Elizabeth Estrada won Grand Champion with her lamb, Charlie. Jose Lemus and his steer, Enchilado, took Reserve Champion Steer honors. For their educational posters and talks, Jasmyn Arroyo (beef) and Karla Marin (sheep) both earned the Champion of Champions awards in their respective projects.

Estrada explained, “I liked having people come up and look at our animals, read our posters, and learn many things they didn’t know before about livestock animals.” The group is now preparing for 4-H Exhibit Day, May 20, in Santa Maria. For information on 4-H, visit SB4H.org.

Sunset Rotary’s growth spurt continues

Morning Rotary hears romantic war story

At the April 26 meeting of the Carpinteria Morning Rotary Club, club member Morris Franklin and his wife Marcella shared their unique story of love and war. Morris and Marcella were separately inspired to take action after the horrible events of Sept. 11, 2001, each providing invaluable service to their country in different ways. Marcella’s work as an environmental scientist and engineer first provided an opportunity for her to go to Ground Zero and assist with the environmental air monitoring around the pit and the debris removed from the site. Then from 2004 to 2011 she served as a civilian expert project manager for emergency response and construction management in Iraq and Afghanistan. During the same period, Morris, who had been an Army reservist for many years, was deployed to Iraq to work as a soldier in the Green Zone.

For years, the two orbited each other, building and securing bases in foreign lands, while living and working in many of the same places without ever meeting. Finally, in 2009, when Morris traveled back to Iraq, he and Marcella met during the course of their work, and there were fireworks. In 2011, the two were married, and upon completing their work in Afghanistan, they moved to Carpinteria.

Andrea Prado and her sisters visited the florist in tawny Chestnut Hill, Pa., where their father Thomas Dolan worked during their childhood. Prado brought her CVN along on her visit to family in Philadelphia in early spring.
