TE Connect does its part for the watershed

TE Connect employees got their hands dirty in an effort to clean up Franklin Creek on May 18. The local company dedicated its service day to the watershed, from which employees pulled out about 150 pounds of garbage—including shopping carts. According to City of Carpinteria Environmental Coordinator Erin Maker, who conducts several waterway cleanups annually, the group scoured the creek bed from the Salt Marsh to Carpinteria High School, and also along agricultural properties on Foothill Road. Maker noted her appreciation for businesses like TE Connect who are committed to local environmental causes.

State controller and assemblywoman to speak at chamber breakfast

The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce will host guest speakers State Controller Betty T. Yee and State Assemblywoman Monique Limòn at its next Good Morning Carpinteria Valley Legislative Breakfast on Friday, June 9 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at Rincon Beach Club, 3805 Santa Claus Lane. Yee will speak on California’s fiscal health, economic trends and the state’s business landscape amid federal uncertainties. Limòn will provide a recap on her first six months in office, give a legislative update from Sacramento and a look at what’s to come in 2017. State Lands to hold Becker well hearing

Summerland’s persistently leaky Becker well is getting closer to a fix. The California State Lands Commission has prepared a draft Environmental Impact Report for a project to abandon and remediate the 100-plus-year-old menace that pollutes the water and beach with oil. On Wednesday, June 7 at 2 p.m., State Lands will hold a meeting at Carpinteria City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave., to review the proposed project and collect public comment on the draft EIR. The document is available at slc.ca.gov under the “Information” tab and “CEQA Notices” link. Comments can be submitted to State Lands through July 5.

Museum opens new exhibit

A new exhibit, “Signs of the times: iconic Shingles of beloved businesses,” will open memorial day Weekend as part of the Carpinteria Valley museum of History’s annual marketplace and flower and plant sale. Proposed mural pays homage to ag

Muralist John Wullbrandt and Carpinteria Beautiful hope to turn an empty wall in downtown Carpinteria into a vibrant work of art. An 8-foot tall, 40-foot long mural entitled “The Carpinteria Valley: A Growing Heritage” is proposed for 4960 Carpinteria Ave. Plans, which will be considered by the Carpinteria Architectural Review Board on May 25, are to have the behemoth piece painted on wooden panels in Wullbrandt’s studio then attached to the empty wall facing the driveway for the Bank of America parking lot.

Wullbrandt, who painted the World’s Safest Beach mural in the 900 block of Linden Avenue in 2012, drafted a new mural concept highlighting agricultural products key to Carpinteria’s history.

Today’s major products, avocados and flowers, are prominent, as well as the giants of yesteryear, lemons, walnuts and Lima beans. “The proposed mural will celebrate the rich history of agriculture and floriculture that has been the economic engine of the Carpinteria Valley for over a century,” stated Carpinteria Beautiful’s permit application.

The organization anticipates the mural will cost $12,000 to $13,000 and has set August as its ambitious goal for installation. The group hopes to secure sponsorship from local growers to pay a portion of the cost.

Foster Markolf, member of the nonprofit’s mural committee, said that the idea of an agriculturally themed public art piece “has always been in the hopper.”

Carpinteria Beautiful initially set its sights on the wall of Bank of America that faces Linden Avenue for the mural, but corporate signage restrictions quickly put an end to that plan. Martha Marquez,

who owns the building at 4960 Carpinteria Ave., fully supports the mural project.

If the ARB grants its blessing this week, Wullbrandt’s paintbrushes will be quite busy this summer.

Island researcher brings history to life

The 120 people who turned out for the Friends of the Carpinteria Library annual meeting on May 17 heard from the world’s leading expert on the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island. Susan Morris has spend years on the Channel Islands conducting field work, but her recent research followed a 150-year-old paper trail on the mainland to determine what happened to the other indigenous Nicoleños removed from the island.

The Lone Woman, best known as Karana from Scott O’Dell’s young adult work of historical fiction “The Island of the Blue Dolphins,” has captivated the world since she was left behind when the rest of her people were relocated to the Los Angeles area in 1835. She remained isolated on the island for a dozen years before Captain George Nidever brought her to Santa Barbara where she died seven weeks later. Records of her existence are sparse, and the fate of the other Nicoleños is poorly documented.

Morris, however, dove deeply into all the evidence available—hundreds of pages of baptism and death records from churches in the Los Angeles area.

“It’s like trying to solve a murder mystery, but everyone is gone, everyone is dead,” she told the audience.

According to lore, no one else from the Lone Woman’s island had successfully relocated, but Morris’ research indicates that a few Nicoleños survived despite exposure to mainland disease and other challenges of assimilation.

Prior to the evening presentation, Morris gave a talk for children with island artifacts and a slideshow. Kerry Lee Doehr, who attended with her daughter, was wildly impressed with the event. In response to a question, Morris noted that an active imagination is paramount to identifying all the research possibilities.

Doehr stated, “(Morris) said that they are like clues that lead to a treasure, and it is like following a treasure map.”

Carpinteria Library faces tough times

For decades, funds from the county and state kept Carpinteria Library’s doors open, but those days are gone. Gaby Edwards told the crowd at the Friends of the Library’s Annual Meeting on May 17 that dwindling monies from historic sources has forced Friends and the City of Carpinteria to drastically up their contributions. “We want to keep (the library) open six days a week, and that’s increasingly hard to do,” said Edwards.

Despite the library’s half empty glass, Edwards drew attention to the positive. She applauded the city for recognizing the value of the library and dedicating more funding to it. She also thanked the hardworking volunteer force that staffs the Friends’ used bookstore, a key revenue source for the nonprofit that serves as the library’s fundraising arm.

Edwards introduced the two newest members of the Friends’ board of directors, Cindy Carrillo and Nancy Hill.

May 29 is Memorial Day. It is a day when Americans can reflect, honor and remember the sacrifices of our soldiers throughout history. They have sacrificed everything so we can be free.

Today, our brave soldiers face many growing threats. Included: A hostile North Korea, a dangerous Iran that wants to blow us up and Islamic jihadists around the world. For these reasons we must support our warriors.

As Winston Churchill said, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”

Maintaining charm

Carpinteria is unique among California beach towns for its community charm. Our downtown streets are venues for parades, markets, festivals and other activities that attract many visitors from far and wide. The surrounding neighborhoods with their cottages, bungalows and historic buildings represent the heart of our community—visually connecting us to the sense and history of our small beach town.

The charm of our city is threatened when new developments seek to impose modern designs where they don’t fit.

Stark, boxy, flat-roof styles that block sunlight and turn driveways into canyons have no place in the downtown neighborhood. If approved, these designs invite other developments that look like them, quickly destroying the small-town character of these streets. New buildings in the downtown area should be compatible with the iconic, small-town quality of this neighborhood where pedestrian traffic is significant and visual aesthetics are on high display.

Many locals have played important roles in creating Carpinteria’s General Plan that lays out guidelines for new developments. Engaged citizens can ensure that our city preserves its charm and keeps visitors coming back. Let’s make sure our planning commissioners and city council approve projects that maintain Carpinteria’s unique character as a small beach community. We should build projects that complement our neighborhoods and halt plans that don’t.

Time to reexamine Summerland School

Thank you, Melinda Wittwer, for writing such a well-researched, thoughtprovoking column on the issue of Summerland School.

It has been a contentious issue among parents for as long as I can remember. It stands to reason that if you remove special education and English learners from a school, that school will have higher test scores. The student body of Summerland School does not reflect the population of Carpinteria. Isn’t it time that the unified district agreement made so long ago be re-examined?

Summerland principal is troubling. Just as it was troubling when the previous superintendent was fired the day before school started.

It seems we have a few impulsive and autocratic board members running our district. Personnel matters are cloaked in secrecy, which means board members are offered protection from explaining their actions.

Now that Melinda has raised the issue, let’s get a community group of parents, educators and community-minded citizens together to take this on.

School district furrows brows

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding recent events in the Carpinteria Unified School District. I recently retired from full time teaching for the district, and I frequently serve as a substitute teacher in the elementary schools. Aliso and Summerland schools, under the expert guidance of Principal Michelle Fox, provide students with expert instruction, safe and well disciplined beautiful campuses, and a positive community atmosphere. From the amazing music program, the expert P.E. instruction, well managed library and computer labs to the after school program, these schools provide the ideal environment for children’s learning and development.

When I heard that two school board members, Andy Sheaffer and Jaclyn Fabre tried to get Dr. Fox to resign as principal, I was shocked and dismayed. It brought back memories of the firing of Superintendent Micheline Miglis, at tremendous cost to the district, without explanation.

The board serves as representatives of the community at large. The members should be held to high standards of honesty, transparency and personal responsibility as they serve as leaders in our local educational community.

Aliso staff loves Fox

I have taught at Aliso for 22 years. This year a talented new principal, Dr. Michelle Fox, was hired. In a short time, we have seen a tremendous improvement in the morale of our staff, and in the shared vision for Aliso School. Additionally, our school has been made safer, more positive. We have a cohesive plan, with improved student behavior and motivation. Dr. Fox is intimately involved in the lives of the students. She has developed relationships that have made a positive impact on students and our school.

Dr. Fox is approachable, communicative, motivating, positive, respectful, sensitive, encouraging, proactive, patient, professional and knowledgeable. She has the needed talents and qualities of a school leader. We are so grateful she joined the Aliso team.

For these reasons we were shocked,

disheartened and furious to discover that she was pressured to resign by two board members, without consideration of the devastating effect it would have. We have thrived under her leadership as a more cohesive and progressive team. She has done this in a chaotic and dysfunctional environment. We have had a full year without a superintendent, whose role is to guide and evaluate administrators, and inform board members.

Hopefully, our newly hired superintendent will enable our district to be managed in a professional, non-corrosive manner so that we may continue to attract talented teachers and administrators, rather than be perceived as a poorly managed mess to be avoided.

Issues at other schools should not undermine and sabotage a wonderfully functioning school of 400-plus students.

Aliso students with special needs have been well served and supported by our principal.

The board should hold off on making serious, potentially damaging changes to our schools until the new superintendent is on board.

Seniors shouldn’t pay for the wall

Apparently Congress and President Trump are not interested in giving 60 million Social Security beneficiaries any COLA (cost of living adjustment) again in 2017. COLAs have been chained to the consumer price index based on what seniors spend on living expenses and not what the general U.S. population’s living expenses are annually. This should be changed to not separate seniors out for a lower spending rate on living expenses.

We spend money on the same things.

But I digress. President Trump is planning a $210 billion COLA cut as a priority budget cut to fund the border wall! Since 2010 when the retirement and survivors trust fund first started running a cash deficit, budget negotiators have attempted to use Social Security cuts, including COLA cuts, as a means of reducing the federal budget deficit.

Social Security recipients paid into the

system when they were employed, believing their benefits would be available to them upon retirement. They are no longer guaranteed this amount, nor their COLA in any given future year.

Generally, when a man is eligible for Social Security benefits his monthly check is larger than a woman’s because he was paid a higher hourly wage. Women receive a lesser monthly Social Security benefit and desperately need an annual COLA to help with increasing living and medical expenses. Have any seniors over the age of 70—women in particular—been given a job when applying for one once they mention their age?

Trump wants to use seniors’ benefits to fund building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. Does this sound legal or like a good way to balance the federal deficit?

I encourage seniors to email, write or call a member of Congress to let them know seniors will not finance a wall or any other priority President Trump comes up with on our hard-earned money.

Youth football program seeds take root and grow

After forming just a year ago, the Carpinteria Valley Youth Athletic Association (CVYAA) has experienced phenomenal support and participation beyond expectations. We could not be more pleased by Carpinteria’s reception.

With the support of the community, we were able to establish our youth football program, buy some new updated equipment and have our coaches train in the newest techniques in tackling, blocking and drills. It is our goal to have as many children as possible participate in our program. Our programs currently include tackle football in fall and flag football in the spring. We had three tackle teams last year and two flag teams. This year our program has three flag teams and may possibly have four tackle teams. We look forward to adding a cheer program this year and some additional sports as opportunities arise.

We had great success last year with two of our teams going into the semi finals of the playoffs. This year we look for that same continued success. With your continued support we look forward to being able to serve the community of Carpinteria and involve as many kids as possible.

The CVYAA is always looking for additional help in all areas of our program.

On May 22, Public Works Director Charlie Ebeling presented the city council with a proposal to improve public safety by removing two Tipuanas in the city parking lot between the 900 blocks of Linden and Maple avenues.

Ebeling also proposed a long-term plan to reconstruct the parking lot in 2017-2018 at a cost of around $680,000.

School board faces deficit, considers staff cuts

At the May 16 Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education budget study session, board members duked it out over how to approach staffing cuts recommended by district administrators.

In presenting proposed budgets for next school year and the financial outlook for the additional three, CUSD Financial Officer Maureen Fitzgerald described a bleak future in which the district would be unable to contribute to reserves at required levels without reducing payroll by way of shedding staff. A debate ensued over what role board members should have in staffing decisions beyond approving a budget that identifies the number and type of staff to be eliminated.

Consensus was clear that projected revenue shortfalls would require the elimination of several positions. The administrative team recommended removing one administrator, two teachers and one clerical employee in order to craft a budget that would fund reserves at a level above 3 percent annually, which is a requirement for Santa Barbara County Education Office certification. The recommended staff reduction was one of four presented, all of which had some variation of removing administrative, teaching and clerical positions—a necessity, according to Fitzgerald, because 87 percent of the district’s general fund is consumed by salaries and benefits.

Boardmember Maureen Claffey took issue with reducing full-time equivalent positions (FTEs) to a faceless number in the determination that staff cuts were unavoidable. She asserted that in order to vote on a budget that called for firing people, she would require more information on who was being fired and why, or at the very least, more information on the process of determining where cuts could be made.

“Clearly there’s a position somewhere that’s in mind or is being discussed. I’d at least like to know the job title before I vote on eliminating it or not,” said Claffey, who repeatedly stated that the process had been compromised by at least the appearance of “opacity” on the part of the administration.

Fitzgerald countered, “This is not a numbers game. It’s a game of making the best decisions for students based on what we can afford.” Board members Jaclyn Fabre and Michelle Robertson joined Board President Andy Sheaffer in opposition to Claffey and in supporting the staff’s work as transparent and thorough.

Fitzgerald said the budget crunch is a result of the contract with the teachers union that was developed in impasse during the 2015-2016 school year. When the district and the union could not reach an agreement, a third party hashed out the details in a contract that hinged on revenue increases. Ironically, the district expects its primary revenue stream of property taxes to continue to increase, which will then trigger untenable pay raises.

Preliminary county reports indicate

about a 5 percent increase this year over last, but the contract language triggers a pay raise of 1 percent if the increased revenue crosses the $200,000 threshold.

All revenue above a $200,000 gain is paid out to staff at 80 cents on the dollar.

Compounding the issue of the automatic pull on new revenues are skyrocketing employer contributions to pensions, an added expense that districts throughout the state are dealing with as pension funds have dialed-down expectations on returns.

Boardmember Michelle Robertson said, “There’s going to be an increase in salaries at the expense of FTEs (full-time equivalents),” which Fitzgerald affirmed.

Prior to the current contract, staff pay raises had been partially funded by an annual state grant of nearly $400,000, but those grant funds have dried up, which is another contributing factor to the shortfalls, Fitzgerald said.

Acting Superintendent Jamie Persoon attempted to clear the air when Claffey persisted in questioning how the administration had arrived at its staffing recommendations. Persoon explained that the administrative position and second teaching position recommended for elimination were currently vacant, so no individuals would be let go in those cases; rather, the positions would remain vacant and staffing would shift accordingly.

Furthermore, she said that feedback was gathered from all school sites to assess priorities before deciding on cuts.

“We worked very hard to make sure everyone had a voice in this process,” Persoon said.

Boardmember Rogelio Delgado insisted he would not vote for a budget with staffing cuts unless assured that those cuts would not impact Rincon and Foothill high schools, due to its student population being in a position that requires more, not less, attention from staff. Persoon explained that many student populations in the district were in sensitive positions and staff evaluations found that Rincon/Foothill had very high student/teacher ratios.

The rift on the school board remained throughout the study session. Sheaffer asserted that administrators were to be trusted in their ability to make staffing decisions, and the role of the board remained at the fiduciary level of maintaining solvency by relying on the expertise of the administration.

“I think we all realize that cuts need to be made, and the fact you’re able to keep (cuts) as far away from the classroom as possible is honoring the direction we have given, and by making cuts this year, it’ll make future cuts much less severe,” Sheaffer said.

Fitzgerald and Persoon invited recommendations for alternatives that could be submitted in the days following the tumultuous study session. The 2017-2018 budget, including staff reductions, will be on the agenda as an action item at the next regularly scheduled school board meeting on Tuesday, May 23.

At the May 23 Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education meeting the board voted 3-1 (Maureen Claffey dissenting and Rogelio Delgado absent) to eliminate four full time equivalent positions in order to cut costs and meet anticipated budget constraints beginning next school year. One administrator, two teachers and one clerical position will be eliminated. District administrators emphasized that the staffing cuts will mainly be accomplished by not filling already vacated positions. Savings will also be generated through retirements. MEETING NOTICE Carpinteria Sanitary District Board of Directors Adoption of Updated Rate and Fee Ordinances At its regular meeting on June 6, 2017 at 5:30 p.m., the Board of Directors of the Carpinteria Sanitary District will consider adoption of Ordinance No. 15 and Ordinance No. 16, pertaining to Sewer Service Charges and Development Impact Fees, respectively. The public is welcome to attend and participate. The meeting will be held in the District Board Room at 5300 Sixth Street in Carpinteria.

Ordinance No. 15, if adopted, will authorize a serial increase in the District’s annual Sewer Service Charge (SSC) for residential and nonresidential customers. Beginning in July 2017 the residential SSC will increase from $614.16 to $625.31 per dwelling unit. The SSC will then increase by 4% per year for the following four years. Non-residential SSC rates will increase similarly.

Ordinance No. 16, if adopted, will increase the District’s Development Impact Fee (DIF) for new or expanded construction from $3,324 to $4,600 per equivalent dwelling unit. The DIF will then adjust annually based on a national construction cost index.

The SSC and DIF increases proposed in these ordinances are based on findings and recommendations in a recently completed, comprehensive Wastewater Rates and Fees Study. The rate and fee increases are necessary to meet operational and capital expenses of the agency. The second annual Glenna Luschei Poetry Contest hosted by the Carpinteria Arts Center shined its spotlight on Carpinterians whose love of language expresses itself in verse. Winners from each of the three age divisions were awarded cash prizes.

Luschei, the contest’s sponsor, was San Luis Obispo County’s poet laureate in 2000.

She founded and continues to operate a publishing company called Solo Press from her Carpinteria home and dedicates herself to giving new poets a voice and a platform for expression.

Natural History Notes

Please consider staying out of the harbor seal sanctuary area during the summer and fall; harbor seals do not migrate and are here year round. They need to rest about 50 percent of the time on land. The only reason they are not seen more frequently during the day in the summer is because people walk on the beach.

Although the city trespass ordinance only applies Dec. 1 to June 1, the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act still applies, so whoever scares them off the beach is in violation of that law.

HARRISON INDUSTRIES CELEBRATES 85TH, UNVEILS CNG STATION Federal, state and county officials were on hand as Harrison Industries celebrated its 85th anniversary earlier this month. Harrison unveiled its state-of-the art compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station with 26 pumps at the company’s Saticoy yard. Harrison Industries’s Nan Drake (left) joins Lynn Harrison, Myron Harrison, Jim Harrison and George Harrison, who are holding certificates of recognition from local lawmakers for the company’s new CNG fueling station.

According to Mike Harrison, engineering manager for Harrison Industries, the CNG system includes two 250-horsepower compressor units that compress natural gas to over 3,500 pounds per square inch into CNG, as well as a computerized monitoring unit for its fueling stations.

“Harrison continues to promote practices that reduce our greenhouse gas footprint, as well as enhance the environment as a whole,” Mike Harrison said. “This new CNG station will allow us to continue to convert a higher number of our diesel vehicles to clean CNG, reducing our GHG impacts and enhancing our communities’ air quality.

As a step further, we will be using CNG sourced from low carbon programs, such as methane gas that has been captured from landfills, which has a smaller carbon impact that traditional pipeline CNG.”

The partnership between Agilent and the ACS dates back to when Agilent Technologies was Dako North America.

Agilent Technologies acquired Dako in 2012 and made the decision to continue supporting the Relay for Life. With this sponsorship, Agilent is contributing towards the support of cancer researchers, centers and prevention studies. This funding has enabled forty seven cancer researchers to win the Nobel Prize - a record for a private, nonprofit health organization.

This relationship with ACS is of great importance to Agilent Carpinteria as this site manufactures tissue-based cancer diagnostics. Linden-Casitas Overpasses Project Update Photos by Robin KaRlsson

Work continues on the underground supports for the Linden and Casitas Pass overcrossings and the bridges over Carpinteria Creek. Concrete is being poured in the freeway median piles and pile driving continues for side supports, as does grading for the embankments leading up to the bridges.

Night work continues through Thursday, May 25, with alternating Highway 101 northbound and southbound lane closures and the northbound on-ramp at Linden Avenue. At least one freeway lane in each direction will remain open during work.

Pile driving for the underground side supports will occur throughout the week with loud noise between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Grading for dirt embankments leading up to the new bridge area continues. Drainage improvements are being installed near the southeast corner of the overcrossing.

Carpinteria Creek bridges

After the piles are driven for the underground supports, crews will begin placing forms and pouring concrete for above-ground supports for the Via Real bridge over Carpinteria Creek. Dirt from the construction site will be used to create embankment areas for the new Carpinteria Creek bridges, which will be raised to accommodate 100-year flood waters.

Highway 101

Drainage improvements are ongoing in the median and shoulder areas. Crews will cap soil testing wells on the night of Thursday, May 25. The southbound Highway 101 on-ramp at Casitas Pass Road and the southbound Highway 101 off-ramp at Linden Avenue will be closed between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

What to expect in June

Casitas Pass Road overpass

After work at the Linden Avenue overcrossing, crews will work on the new Casitas Pass Road underground bridge supports in the freeway median and fill with concrete. The northbound Casitas Pass on-ramp will be closed overnight as needed between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Grading and excavation work will continue to build up bridge embankments. Shoring piles will also be installed.

The southbound Highway 101 on-ramp at Casitas Pass will close for up to two weeks for ramp and shoulder improvements.

The sidewalk at the corner of Linden Avenue and Ogan Road will be closed for retaining wall work. Pedestrians can use the temporary sidewalk detour on Pacific Village Drive connecting to Linden Avenue.

The Carpinteria Creek bike path will close as early as June 1 for up to seven months for bridge work at Via Real and Highway 101. There will be a free EasyLift shuttle during the closure. Pick-up and dropoff locations as well as schedule times will be posted online at SBROADS.com and available on-site via shuttle information signs.

turn up the heat nikki dailey Things are warming up (not surprisingly) here on the central coast as we head into summer, which means stone fruits are on the way! There’s one elusive little stone fruit I hanker to get my hands on every year for both syrups and pies.

If you love a pucker-up tart flavor, then sour cherries are going to be a taste you’ll fall for. This tiny fruit is hard to find, and with a short growing season, I often feel as though I’ve won the ingredient lottery when I come across them in a local fruit stall.

As a lover of road trips, I thought I’d take a drive up north last year to Brentwood, a tiny Bay Area town with one of the only “U-Pick Em” sour cherry farms I could find. Sour cherries have a brightly colored hue in comparison to the sweeter Bing cherry variety, and they’re typically picked during the months of May and June. I arrived at the farm spot early in the morning and was offered a 5-pound wooden bucket and encouraged to pick cherries to my heart’s content. Priced at $3.50 a pound, these little guys were abundant on the tree when I arrived and spent an hour or two filling as much of my bin as I could.

I packed up the car and started the drive back home to Carpinteria thinking of the recipes I’d use for the two pounds I’d grabbed, knowing I’d have to use them quickly as they have a short life.

Their unique flavor is a cross between a lemon and a sweet juicy Bing cherry. They add a great twist to your favorite baked or

Chef randy randy Graham Also known as goat cheese, chèvre has a distinct, tangy flavor. Made from (you guessed it) goat’s milk, it is available in soft, semi-soft and firm varieties. Check labels when you can. Some brands are made from a mixture of both goat and cow milk.

Some might consider it an acquired taste, but the tangy bite and super-creamy texture of goat cheese lends itself to all kinds of foods including quesadillas. Sure, quesadillas are tortillas and cheese, but they can be so much more!

With colorful red and green sauces, and just enough flavorful goat cheese, this California favorite makes a delicious and healthy meal.

Roasted red pepper sauce ingredients:

1 small onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 Tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 2 red bell peppers, roasted, skins and seeds removed 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped ¼ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

savory recipes. Luckily if you can’t find the time for a road trip you can purchase these delicious little guys frozen at Whole Foods to enjoy. Here’s a pie recipe that will have you longing for the stone fruit season each year.

Sour cherry pie

Cook time: 2 hours, 20 minutes Serving: 8 each

Crust ingredients

2 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1 Tablespoon sugar 3/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup (2 sticks) chilled unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 5 Tablespoons (or more) ice water

Filling ingredients

1 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar 3 Tablespoons cornstarch 1/4 teaspoon salt 5 cups whole pitted sour cherries or dark sweet cherries 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice (or 3 Tablespoons fresh lemon juice for Bing cherries) 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 Tablespoons (1/4 stick) unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 1 Tablespoon milk

Process for crust

Whisk flour, sugar and salt in large bowl to blend. Add butter and rub in with fingertips until small pea-size clumps form.

Add 5 Tablespoons ice water; mix lightly with fork until dough holds together when small pieces are pressed between fingertips, adding more water by the teaspoonful if dough is dry. Gather dough together; divide into two pieces. Form each piece into ball, then flatten into disk and wrap in plastic. Refrigerate at least 30

minutes. Keep chilled. Let dough soften slightly before rolling out.

Place pie on rimmed baking sheet and bake 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 375°F. Cut into wedges to serve. Enjoy!

Position rack in lower third of oven and preheat to 425°F. Whisk 1 cup sugar, cornstarch, and salt in medium bowl to blend. Stir in cherries, lemon juice and vanilla; set aside.

Roll out one dough disk on floured surface to 12-inch round. Transfer to 9-inch glass pie dish. Trim dough overhang to 1/2 inch. Roll out second dough disk on floured surface to 12-inch round. Using large knife or pastry wheel with fluted edge, cut 10 3/4-inch-wide strips from dough round. Transfer filling to doughlined dish, mounding slightly in center.

Dot with butter. Arrange dough strips atop filling, forming lattice; trim dough strip overhang to 1/2 inch. Fold bottom crust up over ends of strips and crimp edges to seal. Brush lattice crust (not

Process

In a medium skillet, combine the onions, garlic, and olive oil. Cook over medium heat for 4 minutes, or until the onions are soft. Transfer to a food processor. Press red peppers between paper towels to remove excess moisture. Add the peppers, cilantro, and black pepper.

Process until smooth. Scrape contents into a bowl, wash out the blender bowl and set contents aside. If the consistency is soupy, reduce it on the stove to make sure it has most of the water removed or the quesadillas will be soggy.

Pesto ingredients:

2 ½ cup packed fresh basil ½ cup packed fresh Italian parsley 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 5 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil 1 clove garlic, chopped 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes Salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste

Process

Place all ingredients into blender or food processor. Blend until smooth, stopping to scrape down sides of bowl as needed. Cover and set aside.

Quesadilla ingredients:

8 small flour tortillas (6 inches in diameter) 5 ounces plain semi-soft goat cheese

Assembly process:

Lay four of the tortillas on a work surface. Divide the goat cheese among them and spread evenly to cover the tortillas.

Divide the red-pepper sauce among them and spread evenly. Spread pesto on the red sauce and top with the remaining four tortillas.

Coat a large skillet with no-stick spray and heat over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer one quesadilla to the skillet and cook for 3 minutes per side, or until lightly browned. Remove to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm.

Coat the skillet with no-stick spray and cook another quesadilla. Repeat to cook all the quesadillas.

Use a pizza wheel to cut each quesadilla into four triangle-shaped pieces. Serve while still warm. No need for salsa or sour cream. These quesadillas are good as is!

Kids win at Boys & Girls Club Auction Photos by Lea boyd

The 50 th Anniversary Kids Auction came off beautifully on the evening of Saturday, May 20, at the Boys & Girls Club of Carpinteria on Foothill Road. Close to 230 revelers raised over $96,000—including $17,820 towards the club’s new roof initiative to replace the gymnasium roof damaged in last winter’s unprecedented rainfall. The new roof will cost $200,000, of which $53,000 has been raised. Carpinteria resident and Lions Club member Mike Dawson was inducted as the first Alumni Hall of Fame member at the event. One of the first members of the Boys & Girls Club when it opened at Aliso School in 1967, Dawson and his friends played football, basketball, pool and ping pong under the guidance of then Club Director Rich Medel. For over 20 years, Dawson has remained active in the Boys & Girls Club, donating time and money to the organization. honorary Chair Mike dawson and wife Kathy take in the glitz and glitter of the gala.

Nature is the best gardener—in nature everything is interdependent. Plants depend on birds, insects and animals to spread their seed, to eliminate unwanted pests and to create food. Nature is a selfrenewing system of life and the only error is to violate nature’s laws. It’s hard to imagine a garden without birds and bees and butterflies. I love talking about birds, bees and even bats—how to attract them and how to keep them coming back.

If you want to create a sanctuary for all life, work with nature, not against her.

That means don’t try to be so darned neat and tidy. Let leaves fall on the ground, let plants grow and let things be a little bit wild at least in a portion of your garden.

Softball loss halts CIF playoff run

The Carpinteria High School softball team fell 9-3 in a second round CIF Division VI playoff game against The Webb Schools of Claremont on May 23.

Spotting the Gauls a 5-1 lead after the first three innings, the Warriors battled back to cut the lead to 5-3 after six. The visitors, however, added four runs in the seventh to run away with the win.

After a scoreless first inning, The Webb Schools, which came into the contest with a 17-4 record, put runners on first and second on a base hit and a walk in the next inning with one out. Carpinteria pitcher Amanda Blair struck out the Gauls’ Emily Chu for the second out, but Elise Morris’ rocket down the left field line drove in both teammates to put The Webb Schools up, 2-0.

In the third, the Warriors ran into more trouble with opposing pitcher Chandler Luebbers drawing a walk. Luebbers was then sacrificed to second, and following an error and two walks, the bases were loaded. Morris stroked a single to drive in two more and make it 4-0. Another Warrior error left the score at 5-0.

“When you give good teams extra outs and extra base runners, they’ll take advantage of that,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales.

Carpinteria got the bats going in the bottom half of the inning with Iliana Esquival leading off with a double to left center. Jauslyn Richardson’s triple down the right field line put the Warriors on the board, making it a 5-1 game.

Carpinteria would threaten again in the fourth with Amanda Blair leading off the inning with an infield single. Samantha Saenz doubled to right to put runners at second and third; however, Tori Kelley’s line drive up the middle was snagged

by Luebbers whose throw to third completed a double play and preserved the four-run lead.

Blair settled in, giving up only one hit through the next three innings to keep the Gauls at bay going into the bottom of the sixth where the Warriors began a rally. Amanda’s twin sister Mikayla Blair drew a one-out walk. A single by Raquel Cordero advanced a sliding Blair ahead of the throw to third, and Cordero took second on the play. Amanda then singled to left to make it 5-2, and took second on the throw home. But the Warriors weren’t quite finished yet. A sacrifice fly to center

May 17 – The Cate School boys tennis team’s perfect season came to an end today by a score of 10-8 against Buckley in the Division-III Boys Tennis Semifinals. Buckley jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first round sweeping all the doubles points and picking up a win at number-three singles. The Rams played even in each of the next two rounds. “Ultimately, Kevin and Ethan Ha’s sweeps at one and two singles for the Rams were not enough, as the Rams could muster just two doubles sets,” explained Cate coach Jason Saltoun-Ebin. “Kevin and Ethan really anchored the team in singles and gave us a shot to win every match; unfortunately, we came up just a tad short today,” said Saltoun-Ebin. What did the trail give you?

Steve: Adrenaline. Definitely adrenaline. My times got so good that we could go up and down in 28 minutes. I loved watching the people come up the trail who at first would be wearing big sweats, sweaters and heavy pack, then pretty soon they would be racing up the hill in their new LuLu Lemon tights—just strutting up the hill.

You are the master trail people, how did that happen?

Janet: I was running a lot and noticed how nice it was one day when I was following another runner through Carpinteria. Then, I thought how great it would be if we had a group running on the Franklin Trail. The first time it was me, Nancy, Gogi and Sam, my brother-in-law who worked for the Forest Service. We brought him for protection I guess. We girls would go, then later we talked Steve into going with us.

Steve: I wasn’t a runner, I wasn’t working out, and Janet told me I needed to start working out. So the first time I went up the trail, I barely made it to the switchbacks. I was huffing and puffing and yelling at Janet because she kept saying it was just around the next corner. “One more turn, one more turn,” and we had done 15 turns and I had just about had it. Where is the bench? I took so much stuff the first time. I was really weighed down. I made it to the first tower the first day, then by the third day, I made it to the bench and all the way to the gate.

Then it was on. When I put my mind to something, I’m on. I lost nearly 30 pounds in three months.

Then all the other girls started joining in with us. I would just challenge everyone and say, “Come on let’s go. Keep up with me.” If they fell back, I would drop back and encourage them, “Come on, you’re going to need to move your ass (MYA).” MYA became the name of our group. “Get going...You’re not tired.”

Pretty soon they were calling me coach, and that’s how it started.

Did something change?

Steve: I hurt my back then my knee.

So now, I have been off the mountain for three or four months. It is amazing just how quickly we can replace a really good habit with something else. Now I’m back doing motorcross. It is definitely easier to stay away from the trail than to do the trail. You miss one day and your fine. You miss three and then it is harder work to get up there.

Janet: I still do the trail two to three times a week. Yet I wonder how I had the time to do it daily when now that time has gone to something else. Just like that, a habit changes and it is hard to go back to it. I’m really kind of an addictive personality. I started at the Spark 45 gym and was suddenly doing that five times a week. Now I go to the gym three times and Franklin Trail two to three times a week.

How has the trail affected your relationship?

Janet: The trail is definitely our happy spot. It’s good for relationship and friendships.

So when do you make the Mama J scones that you sell at your shop?

Janet: I bake them at 4:30 every morning before the trail. I actually worry a bit that the bears will smell scent of the freshly baked scones on me when I’m on the trail. But then again, I have never seen a bear.

Back door man

On May 12 at approximately 8:30 a.m. a deputy was dispatched to a landscape supply company to take a report of a break-in that occurred the previous night.

Surveillance video captured a man forcing entry into the business through a sliding glass door in the back of the building at about 4:20 a.m. The man’s face was covered. He went to the cash register and removed $200. The man left the way he had come in, taking the cash and register key with him.

A blank stare

On May 14 at approximately 12:45 a.m. a deputy was dispatched to an apartment complex on a call of two intoxicated people banging on the reporting party’s window. A deputy responded and spoke with the reporting party and then located a man in the parking lot of the complex who matched the description he’d been given. The man did not respond when the deputy spoke with him, and the deputy reported that he was given a blank stare.

There was a strong smell of alcohol about the man, and the deputy arrested him as “he was unable to care for himself.” The man was taken to Santa Barbara County Jail. Deputies were unable to locate the second person said to have been with the man.

Bottle swipe and meth pipe

On May 16 at approximately 6:20 p.m. a deputy responded to a call from the parking lot of a shopping center on Casitas Pass Road about two men and a woman removing the license plate from a parked vehicle. When the deputy arrived, he found a man sitting in the driver’s seat of a car that matched the description of the vehicle being tampered with. A “routine records check” revealed that the man was on probation for a drug offense, as was the registered owner of the vehicle who was in the supermarket according to the driver.

During a probation search of the vehicle, a deputy found a glass pipe in the glove compartment with “a bulbous end” with methamphetamine in it. The deputy also found four unopened bottles of champagne in the trunk and three bottles of wine—four of the bottles had anti-shoplifting devices on them from a supermarket in Montecito. There were also 15 checks that belonged to another woman in a bag in the trunk. The man said he did not know about the pipe or the bottles.

The manager of the supermarket on Casitas Pass Road then informed another responding deputy that the woman who was with the man in the car had attempt-

ed to enter his office. The manager also provided the deputy with a surveillance picture of the woman placing a bottle of alcohol in her bag as another male companion pushed a shopping cart. A deputy had the man in the car call the woman in the store, and the deputy asked her to come out and speak to him. Deputies could not locate the second man but arrested both the man and the woman present for the stolen items and for the pipe/ meth as they were on drug probation.

The woman said that she had been at the beach for the day and had gone into the store to buy some things. She said she did not know about the pipe or the bottles of alcohol in the car. She also said that she had not put anything into her bag when she was in the store.

Westbound to jail

On May 17 at approximately 12:13 a.m. a deputy was monitoring traffic coming and going from a motel on Carpinteria Avenue when he noticed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed going westbound and narrowly missing a bicyclist. The deputy had to accelerate to more than 60 miles per hour to catch up with the vehicle. Initiating a traffic stop, the deputy illuminated the lights on his patrol car, but the vehicle he was pursuing kept going and made a right turn on Linden Avenue.

The deputy put his siren on and the vehicle made a fast left turn on to Sawyer Avenue, nearly striking a car heading southbound on Linden. The vehicle then turned into an apartment/condominium complex and the deputy followed, illuminating the driver’s side window with his spotlight. The deputy noted that he recognized the driver and knew that his license was suspended. The driver then attempted to pull into a garage parking space, and the deputy called out for him to stop. A second deputy responded to assist, and the initial pursuing deputy took the man into custody. The man appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamine, and reportedly had “dilated pupils non-reactive to light, bruxism, body tremors, sweats, etc.” His mood was swinging between angry/abusive and back to “normal” according to the deputy’s report. Due to his unpredictable behavior, the man was transported directly to Santa Barbara County Jail in lieu of any drug exam at the Carpinteria sub-station.

By the early 1900s Carpinteria’s collection of small schoolhouses were bursting at their seams, and a plan emerged to consolidate. a new school board formed to unite the formerly separate districts, and a modern school was built where the Carpinteria Community pool sits today. Bond sales paid for new two-story school, which amounted to about $33,000 by the time the doors opened to students in the fall of 1913. the building boasted a sewing room, a cafeteria, seven classrooms, a 300-person auditorium, drinking fountains, a library, a woodworking room and principal’s offices.

Aliso School parents hold a yard sale

the parents for Aliso group held a yard sale on may 20 on the blacktop of Aliso School and raised $547 for school programs. donations of clothes, appliances, books, games, toys and baby items from Aliso School families were made during the week prior to the event, and parent volunteers hauled boxes, spread tarps and set up a shade tent to settle in for a day of sales. Sheri hultman brought a cooler full of drinks and bags of snacks to pad the fundraising efforts, and Rosa Navarro coordinated with other moms to ensure a well-organized event.

depicting eastern european Jewish life in imperial Russia in 1905, “Fiddler on the Roof” came to the Carpinteria high School stage last week where it gave young thespians a chance to shine. the well-loved play opened on broadway in 1964 and is based on the story “tevye and his daughters (or tevye the dairyman)” and other tales

Tevye struggles between three of his five daughters’ desires to marry for love (thus moving them away from their traditional faith) and the edict of the tsar, which evicts the Jews from their village. the performances at ChS were on may 16-17 and may 19-20, and starred rotating casts made up of Forrest Van Stein, Samuel truax, Jacob harms, elias mochel, Andrew hipple, Ryan Fly, Ana delgado, Corina porter, harmony Reed, Rosilind hart, Sophia Nakasone, daryanna Lancet, hannah Souza, bali Gutierrez, montana Wilcox and maria Zamora. the ensemble roles that are typically filled by males were performed by female student dancers.

The meeting place

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham I followed a gurgling creek into gaping San Emigdio Canyon and its snowcovered mountains. Along the way blacktailed deer traversed the steep slopes above and a northern harrier swooped overhead, foraging the side canyons for a brush rabbit.

This was my initial step into one of the most uniquely diversified regions in California, a stupendous convergence of topography and habitats supporting a wide range of flora and fauna. At 93,000 acres, Wind Wolves Preserve is the West Coast’s largest nonprofit preserve.

Wind Wolves is part of The Wildlands Conservancy (TWC), and is one of 15 properties throughout California. Wind Wolves is a place where the Transverse Ranges, Coast Ranges, Sierra Nevada, western Mojave Desert and San Joaquin Valley all converge on the Kern and Ventura County borders “It’s an extremely diverse and unique ecosystem,” said Landon Peppel, Central Valley and North Coast Regional Director for TWC and Preserve Manager at Wind Wolves. “It’s a big preserve that’s influenced by a wide range of habitats.”

On my first morning hiking the preserve I took the San Emigdio Canyon Trail along the creek to the Canyon de los Osos Wetlands Trail. In the back of the canyon I was surprised to see a huge herd of sheep grazing the canyon floor. Considering the environmental impacts on such a stunning landscape, I was curious about the purpose of the herbivores.

Peppel explained to me that before Europeans arrived, the canyon and valley floors were carpeted in low-growing plants that benefitted what are now endangered and threatened species like San Joaquin kit foxes, antelope ground squirrels, blunt-nosed leopard lizards and burrowing owls. Today those sheep are enhancing a return to a natural balance.

“The goal of the sheep is trying to keep the thick grasses out and keep the wildlife happy,” continued Peppel. “These Mediterranean grasses are super competitive.”

As the sheep continue to eat the thick grasses, native seeds are planted behind them. Wind Wolves has a whopping 550 plant species, and since 2012 approxi-

Tule elk have also been returned to the preserve. Currently there are 200 elk. With the amount of acreage in Wind Wolves possession, the preserve has the ability to hold 2,000 Tule elk.

The preserve was originally owned back in the 1800s by John C. Fremont, a military officer and explorer. With 52 animal species, close to 200 bird species and 23 reptiles and amphibians on the preserve, there’s a lot to protect at Wind Wolves.

“You have to look at the land,” said Peppel. “You have to pay attention. It’s challenging, but it’s the world we live in.”

This past spring I returned to Wind Wolves three more times. San Emigdio Canyon is the pulse of the preserve.

Wildflowers were beginning to carpet the hill and mountainsides. Hillside daisies, California poppies, popcorn flower, valley phacelia and owl’s clover were all prominent in the preserve. A marauding coyote loped across the canyon floor. A sleepy gopher snake poked its head out of the crunchy leaf litter and a Bewick’s wren filled the canyon with birdsong.

I took the trail leading toward Reflection Pond. It was still a little early, but the potential was there. It was going to be an excellent year for wildflowers. A couple weeks later I returned with my wife, Lori. What a difference a couple weeks more made. I’d never seen wind poppies before or the California jewel flower, an endangered wildflower and one of the Golden State’s rarest. There were sweeping carpets of yellows, oranges, purples and pinks and hardly anyone around.

On the adjacent ridgeline is the Tule

Elk Trail. The ascent up was steep and shrouded in hillside daisies, but once atop the windswept plateau more wildflowers had sprung to life and offered incredible views into the depths of side canyons leading into the Los Padres National Forest.

Elevations in Wind Wolves fluctuate greatly from 600 to over 6,000 feet. It was noticeably cooler on the plateaus and there was no cover from the chilly winds blowing off the western Sierra.

Then a small band of black-tailed deer momentarily took my mind off the frigid conditions, the unique topography creating its own microclimate in a preserve oozing in biodiversity.

Theresa Smith travelled to Dubai and Abu Dhabi for two weeks with her aunt Nancy Storonskyj of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida to meet with friends they hadn’t seen in a long time. Storonskyj’s friends have been working and living in the United Arab Emirates for the past three years, and they hosted the two travelers in Abu Dhabi, which made touring the area easier. Visiting the Grand Mosque and kayaking the mangroves were big highlights of the area. In Dubai, Smith and Storonskyj’s met Smith’s Turkish friend, whom she hadn’t seen in over 17 years.

“We got to meet her new husband,” Smith wrote, “who had a great time taking lots of photos of us with the selfie stick. (Ha ha!)”

The biggest highlight of the trip, “beside time with our lovely friends in an exotic land,” Smith added, “was our overnight desert safari through Platinum Heritage. Our guide Rasheed was very nice and made our time memorable. We could tell that he loved taking care of the camels. It was a trip of a lifetime.” Smith noted that the hand sign she, her aunt and Rasheed are making was initiated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum—the three fingers mean win, victory and love, and symbolize work ethic, success and love of the nation. “Our guide said that it can also stand for peace,” Smith said. “It’s a sign of love of the UAE.”
