Union Bank robber walks away

A heavyset, white man around 50 years old robbed Union Bank on May 24 at 1:50 p.m. and remains at large. He gave a note demanding money to a teller, who handed over an undisclosed amount of cash. The man, who was about 6-feet tall and 230-250 pounds, fled the Casitas Plaza bank on foot and was last seen walking toward the IHOP. He was wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and a black Dodgers hat. No weapon was reported or observed during the robbery. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department is investigating whether the same man robbed Montecito Bank & Trust’s Carpinteria Branch in a similar fashion on April 27.

Anyone with information about the suspect should contact the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division at 681-4150 or leave an anonymous tip at 681-4171 or sbsheriff.org/anonymoustips.html.

A man robbed Carpinteria’s Union Bank last week, less than a month after a similar-looking suspect robbed the Montecito Bank & Trust branch across the street.

Offering cycling summer camps isn’t new for Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition, but offering one at Carpinteria Children’s Project is. This year, a week-long camp open to all 10- to 14-year-olds will take place from June 12 to 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. The fee to enroll is $50, and scholarships are available. Cate Students win WaterWise video contest

Cate School students Diarra Pouye and Kyril van Schendel’s simple and stylish video encouraging water conservation won the pair $1,000 in the Santa Barbara County 2017 WaterWise high School Video Contest. Judges selected the entry for first place, and online voters chose it for the People’s Choice Award. Cate School also receives $1,500 for the win.

Creek Bike Path to close, free shuttle offered

Over the next several months, the Carpinteria Creek Bike Path will be closed to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe while Caltrans crews work on the Via Real and Carpinteria Creek highway bridges. The path will close on Thursday, June 1 and remain closed for up to seven months. During that time, a free EasyLift shuttle will pick up at San Roque Mobile Estates every 30 minutes between 7:30 and 9 a.m. and drop off in several locations along Carpinteria Avenue, between Bailard Avenue and 7th Street. Between 2 and 5:30 p.m. daily pickups will occur every 30 minutes along Carpinteria Avenue for drop off at San Roque. The schedule is online at SBROADS. com and posted at the pick-up and drop-off sites. Times will likely change for the summer after school gets out.

Measure U Update: Carpinteria Children’s Project

Infant, toddler and preschool programs, adult-level classes to learn English or Spanish, family counseling, help with taxes and accessing state and county social services, as well as an office for the Santa Barbara County District Supervisor––the Carpinteria Children’s Project on what was formerly the Main School campus serves multiple functions with multiple agencies, all with the aim of promoting healthy families, successful children and strong community. Director Maria Chelsey Fisk noted, “It’s all about the team here at the Children’s Project.”

Although the groups that operate at CCP, including the early childhood education programs (these are run as a 5103c nonprofit), are not part of the Carpinteria Unified School District, the buildings and grounds of the 1930s-era school on 8th Street are CUSD property and will be included in the district-wide Measure U school upgrades. But with pre- and after-school programs administered by the Carpinteria Children’s Project on both Aliso and Canalino school campuses, a close relationship exists—particularly in CCP’s mission of having its young students be kindergarten ready.

The structural work planned for CCP includes more renovation than new construction, with the most significant changes coming to the Palm Avenue side of the site in the form of a new parking area and the replacement of aged portable classrooms with new modular classrooms that better fit the architectural style of the original buildings.

“Parking is a bit of an issue here,” Fisk explained of the morning and afternoon parent drop-off. Drivers must currently circle around parked cars in a relatively tight space, which is potentially dangerous for small children coming and going from classes. The new design has parking located on the outer edge of the campus, with improved traffic flow.

“This lot was initially part of the Main School playground, and it is not structurally suited to be a parking lot,” CUSD Facilities Manager David Weniger said of the cracked and buckling blacktop surface. “The new lot will be structurally appropriate,” he added.

As with the rest of the CUSD schools, the CCP is to receive new, state-of-the-art voice evacuation fire alarm systems this

summer. The daycare and pre-school programs of CCP continue year-round, and the alarm system installation will be accomplished with “swing-shift” working hours from 3 to 11 p.m.

In a facility that serves babies and small children, fire-safety and evacuation-route regulations are particularly stringent, and a “fire-envelope corridor” with a high fire-resistant coating, as well as mechanical upgrades to door mechanisms, will be installed to make the structure code compliant.

Once the Measure U work has been completed at the Main School campus— which is scheduled to continue into the year 2020 like the other school projects in the district—the pre- and after-school programs currently operating on the Aliso and Canalino campuses will be consolidated on the CCP site.

Restroom renovations and replacement of the heating system are part of the coming upgrades to the CCP facility, and along with the fire-code work to be done, there will be inevitable impacts to the early childhood education programs—the specifics of which are yet to be determined. However, in choosing how best to proceed with the timing of multiple simultaneous construction projects, Weniger noted, “You have to look at cost effectiveness. How much time do you give a contractor (to finish a job)?”

“We try to encourage local contractors (to bid on Measure U projects),” Weniger said, “although we can’t guarantee (who gets the job) on public works projects.”

Still, Weniger continued, “you can get better pricing” using local companies.

cluding providing a stage and auditorium for Summerland School to present their annual play (“The Jungle Book” this year on Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3). The facility upgrades coming via Measure U funds will help ensure that the vital community services continue to be provided well into the future.

New wet winter numbers have arrived

From mid-November through the end of March, the City of Carpinteria and Carpinteria Community Church partnered with Freedom Warming Centers (FWC) of Santa Barbara to provide our local homeless a warm, dry place to spend the night during inclement weather. The City opened the Veterans Memorial Building 26 times during the season, and the Community Church opened its Parish Hall 13 times. Forty homeless individuals had 268 nights of safe sleep at the Veterans Building, and 177 nights of sleep at the church.

The FWCs of Santa Barbara is a nonprofit that pays its dedicated and caring staff to open the doors at host locations at 6 p.m. After check in “guests” usually share a warm home cooked meal provided by generous Carpinterians before the lights go out. In fact, FWC staff have nicknamed the Community Church the “Biltmore South” because of the beauty of the facility as well as the hospitality, friendship and wonderful meals shared with congregation members. While guests sleep the FWC staff stays awake monitoring the room, providing any help needed and doing regular rounds inside and outside the host building to insure the safety of guests, property and neighbors. By 6 a.m. everyone is gone from the FWC and you would never know they were even there, which is why FWC Director Edgar Wesson, Jr., calls it a “Casper the Friendly Ghost” ministry.

The City and the Community Church are grateful for the support of many in Carpinteria who make it possible to house our local homeless population on nights that could otherwise be life threatening.

And as always there is room for more individuals and churches to participate, and the help would be much appreciated.

Rethinking the school board

Over these past few weeks I have noticed many community members question the decisions made by two of our school board members, Andy Sheaffer and Jaclyn Fabre. What is important for the community of Carpinteria to realize is that this behavior displayed is nothing new. We only have to look as far back to the beginning of the year when the board decided to fire Superintendent Miglis right before the start of school. This decision left the school district without leadership and support for our schools.

When asked about the timing, the school board said it was in the best interest of the district and students. In addition, we also had to pay Miglis for the reminder of the school year per her existing contract.

Despite the lack of leadership and support at the district, Dr. Michelle Fox continuously proved that she was going to do everything she could to make our schools a better place for our students. Dr. Fox accomplished more than any one principal could hope to accomplish within a year.

When the two board members attempted to force Dr. Fox to resign, you can imagine the frustration of the Aliso School staff for the blatant abuse of power displayed. When asked about the timing, the two board members once again claimed that it was what was best for the students, and once again the district would have to pay out another contract until the end of the school year for services not being provided.

Careful what you wish for

In the May 18 issue, Coastal View News columnist Melinda Wittwer muses, “Why not close Summerland School and move those students to larger schools in Carpinteria?”

There is a common misconception that Summerland School is a drain on CUSD resources. Not so. The tax base of Trustee Area 2 represents almost 25 percent of the CUSD’s tax base funding, and it uses about 4 percent. It also has a history of welcoming intra-district transfers.

Parity, not preference. That’s all that has ever been asked, but it’s been denied

by CUSD for almost 60 years. Measure U passed with the support of Trustee Area 2 in part because it specifically promises to deliver the much needed and long awaited upgrades to Summerland School.

If Summerland School is closed, I promise you it will not be as simple as bussing our children to Carpinteria. It is through closure that CUSD will open the fastest and easiest path for Trustee Area 2 to create a charter school. Chances of success are high. By law, CUSD will be forced to provide a charter facility that is on par with the rest of the schools in the district. Furthermore, I believe that the tax base of Trustee Area 2 would remain entirely with the new charter school. That’s a resounding “lose-lose” scenario for the rest of CUSD. Those who are beating the drum of “let’s close Summerland” should be careful what they wish for—for it may come to pass.

I’d like to thank so many, specifically Donnie Nair and Melinda Wittwer, for caring about where my daughter attends school. How kind of you to highlight the virtues of Summerland School, emphasizing the achievement scores of its students (about 40 points above average). Do the math: about 30 of the Summerland Students are from Carpinteria; divide them between the other two elementary schools and among the grades and you get 2.5 students per grade. Do you seriously think that number would make an impact on overall test scores?

While you’re at it, factor in the homeschooled because “…home educated typically score 15 to 30 percentile points above public-school students on standardized academic achievement tests.” (NHERI. org) Just 15 percent of the homeschooled are non-white, which indeed does not

align with the population of Carpinteria.

As for the endless attacks on our school board members, how can any decent person malign those who cannot defend themselves? The school board members cannot discuss matters of the board. So exactly where is Felicity Moore getting information? Why is any Aliso teacher spreading propaganda via flyers to students? You should be ashamed, Ms. Moore; wouldn’t the children be better served by your focus on teaching rather than perpetuating rumor and slander?

By the numbers

The Summerland Citizens Association Board is disheartened and chagrined that there remain concerns regarding the expenses related to the facility improvements so direly needed at Summerland School. CUSD committed to maintain Summerland School when the Carpinteria and Summerland schools merged in 1961.

Before the merger, Summerland owned property donated specifically to build a new school. The project never happened.

The Measure A bond passed in 1995 identified as a priority the need to improve the educational opportunities for children in Summerland and the western portion of the district. That plan never happened.

Measure U passed in November 2014, with strong support from Summerland School Attendance Area (SSAA). In the Measure U Master Plan, CUSD Board approved plans to rebuild Summerland School’s 50-year-old structures. Based on history and the support Summerland has provided the district, it is incredibly frustrating that there remains a suggestion to close Summerland School.

Tax records show approximately $4 million (20 percent) of CUSD’s $20 million unrestricted annual budget is provided

by SSAA taxpayers. The school’s annual budget is $450,000 (2 percent of the CUSD budget), leaving $3.5 million shared among other Carpinteria schools.

Of the $90 million in Measure U funds, SSAA will pay $18.7 million (21 percent) in property taxes. Yet only $5.2 million (6 percent) has been earmarked to improve its campus. We anxiously await CUSD keeping its commitment to invest in Summerland School.

Summerland under fire, then and now

From 1967 to 1976 I had three children attending Summerland School. It was smaller then––two rooms, two teachers and a teacher’s aide. I don’t know the

pupil count the whole time, but remember one year there were 38 students for grades one through six. Like today at Summerland School, the students got an excellent education; there wasn’t manic testing then but I’m sure if there was the scores would have been as high as the ones today. Economically, Summerland was much different. It was a pretty lowkey little burg, housing was very affordable and there were many residents living on Social Security, welfare or disability.

We lived on East Valley Road, east of Ladera Lane where the Montecito boundary ends, hence, Carpinteria Unified School District. Children living on Hidden Valley Lane, Toro Canyon, Lambert Road and much of Ortega Ridge Road also went to Summerland. Several of our neighbors were appalled their children were expected to go to school in funky old Summerland. One family sold their home, another used a grandmother’s address in Montecito to get the kids into Montecito Union. Others went the private school route to avoid Summerland School. There was talk in those years of closing the school.

Summerland parents convinced our wonderful Superintendent Dr. Carty to keep their neighborhood school. One thing was the same as today, “the student body of Summerland School did not reflect the population of Carpinteria,” as last week’s letter writer stated. Well, they didn’t live in Carpinteria. I don’t think a school should be condemned because of high test scores.

Too many old Dems

Think about this. People want to come to our great country. Americans who continually express discontent with existing conditions are free to leave. The many liberal celebrities who vowed to leave the country if Trump was elected president are still here.

I have voted for Democratic candidates in the past. I appreciate a dedicated and sincere candidate whose views differ from mine. Unfortunately the present-day elderly Democratic party leaders with their socialistic themes involving rich supporting poor disappoint me. I dislike constant use of words like bigot to characterize sincere opponents. The Republican theme of promoting opportunities for people to better themselves is much more appealing. I hope some forward-thinking young Democratic leaders will surface to replace the likes of Nancy Pelosi (age 77) and Chuck Schumer (66). They have outlived their usefulness in government positions.

They can’t seem to comprehend why Hillary lost. Intelligent young Democrats need to break away from these two and other whining liberals, including hate-spewing Maxine Waters (78) and socialist Bernie Sanders (75). Young Dems need to appreciate the absolute irony that Sanders was able to seriously challenge Hillary Clinton (69). Those who like Sander’s socialistic ideas should study once-prosperous Venezuela’s recent descent into chaos.

Republicans are far from perfect and have disagreements within the party structure. That’s not a bad sign. But youth is present. Among the 17 presidential candidates: Rubio (45), Jindal (45), Cruz (46), Walker (49). Compare to the only two Democratic final candidates: Clinton (69), Sanders (75).

Young Democrats: Appear, make yourselves known and challenge your present feckless political leaders. Young Republicans: Pull it together. Work to make our country productive and prosperous. Both groups: Realize meaningful change doesn’t come easily. Be willing to listen to views that differ from yours. And remember, Trump outfoxed both political parties. Learn by seeking real answers to this question: Why did this happen?

School board cuts staff to address shortfalls Staffing turnover calls leadership into question

By Peter Dugré As expected, the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education on May 23 voted to eliminate four full-time equivalent positions in a cost-saving measure described by administrators as the best move to avoid insolvency in the coming years.

Boardmember Maureen Claffey voted against the motion to eliminate one administrator, two teachers and a clerical worker from the payroll because she said clear evidence had not been presented that the choice of which positions to eliminate was rooted in what was best for students.

CUSD Chief Business Officer Maureen Fitzgerald said, “These reductions, we feel, are farthest away from the classroom and have the least impact to our current educational programs.”

Public budget discussions had not identified specific employees that would be let go, and the administration stated that positions were already vacant and simply would not be filled. However, Claffey stated that one teacher and the clerical employee reductions were at Rincon High School, which she said she did not support. Boardmember Rogelio Delgado, who was absent from the meeting, had come out strongly at the May 16 budget study session against reduced staffing at Rincon.

“At no point, either in writing or here, have I seen how this specific plan best benefits students of Carpinteria,” Claffey said. “I don’t see evidence that this specific plan is best for Carpinteria’s children.”

CUSD teachers union President Jay Hotchner also spoke out against the process leading to which positions to eliminate. “We’ve heard messaging behind this that it will keep cuts as far away from students as possible, but we’ve seen no articulation to exactly how anybody is going to rationalize how these cuts are as far away from students and the teaching and learning model,” he said.

Board members in support of the decision, which will also deliver savings through employee retirements, put their trust in the administration, which first recommended staffing reductions in January when it became clear that budget cuts would be necessary. A combination of teacher raises and the burden of increased employer contributions to state pensions will put a strain on the district’s budget starting next school year. Fitzgerald had reported that the district would not be able to sustain the required 3 percent contribution to reserve funding without cutting expenditures, and the most likely target for savings is payroll, which consumes 87 percent of the general fund.

In a related matter illustrating growing disarray within the school board and administration, Claffey urged the board to instate a hiring freeze until incoming Superintendent Diana Rigby takes

Administrative seats recently vacated in Human Resources and Cafeteria Services need to be filled, but Claffey suggested those decisions should be delayed until new leadership is in place.

“I think so many issues now are a result of lack of leadership and putting things in place haphazardly is making things worse,” Claffey said. A new superintendent should make hiring choices while implementing a coherent vision and direction for the school district, she said.

It was unclear whether Claffey’s suggestion gained traction with other board members and the body was not set to discuss a hiring freeze at the May 24 meeting. She recommended piggy backing the hiring freeze onto the decision to eliminate the four positions, but it did not happen. The board could revisit a hiring freeze at an upcoming meeting.

Administrator in Charge Jamie Persoon, the acting superintendent, said that a hiring freeze likely wouldn’t be necessary given that final decisions on applicants do not typically occur before July 1, when the new superintendent will take her post.

Also indicative of the scrutiny the school district has come under, several members of the public spoke out against a maneuver by board President Andy Sheaffer and Boardmember Jaclyn Fabre weeks ago to pressure Aliso and Summerland schools’ Principal Michelle Fox to resign. Members of the public including parents and teachers from the schools lined up in support of Fox, calling into question why the two board members thought their actions were prudent at the time. Fox submitted a resignation on May 5 before rescinding it.

Aliso School parent Salina Kelly said, “School board members made an irrational decision that has called into question the stability of our public-school system.”

Susan Frederickson, Aliso School teacher, said, “(Fox) is the most qualified and well-liked principal we’ve had since Lisa Maglioni, and that’s 17 years ago.”

MEETING NOTICE Carpinteria Sanitary District Board of Directors Adoption of Updated Rate and Fee Ordinances At its regular meeting on June 6, 2017 at 5:30 p.m., the Board of Directors of the Carpinteria Sanitary District will consider adoption of Ordinance No. 15 and Ordinance No. 16, pertaining to Sewer Service Charges and Development Impact Fees, respectively. The public is welcome to attend and participate. The meeting will be held in the District Board Room at 5300 Sixth Street in Carpinteria.

Ordinance No. 15, if adopted, will authorize a serial increase in the District’s annual Sewer Service Charge (SSC) for residential and nonresidential customers. Beginning in July 2017 the residential SSC will increase from $614.16 to $625.31 per dwelling unit. The SSC will then increase by 4% per year for the following four years. Non-residential SSC rates will increase similarly.

Ordinance No. 16, if adopted, will increase the District’s Development Impact Fee (DIF) for new or expanded construction from $3,324 to $4,600 per equivalent dwelling unit. The DIF will then adjust annually based on a national construction cost index.

The SSC and DIF increases proposed in these ordinances are based on findings and recommendations in a recently completed, comprehensive Wastewater Rates and Fees Study. The rate and fee increases are necessary to meet operational and capital expenses of the agency. Carpinteria artist Ben Watts’ painting, titled “Kung Fu Panda,” was displayed at the grand opening of Kyle’s Kitchen (formerly Silvergreen’s) on Chapala Street in Santa Barbara on May 27. Watts is a member of the Sling Shot Art Forum and Gallery, which is affiliated with Alpha Center located on Canon Perdido. The Loon Point conundrum

the summerland shore f r a n d av i s Access to the Loon Point parking lot and the beach below has been a bone of contention between the Summerland Citizens Association and the county for the past few months. Beach visitors, especially surfers and fishermen, had grown used to the parking lot’s availability from dawn to dusk.

Dawn to dusk usage was the norm established back in 1986 by the California Coastal Commission when a developer subdivided the nearby property and provided the beach easement. Things got prickly when the county posted new hours from 8 a.m. to sunset in an effort to make Loon Point consistent with other county venues.

The new more “consistent” hours have proved problematic. First, that wasn’t the original agreement reached by the developer, county and Coastal Commission. Second, 8 a.m. to sunset cuts off a lot of beach access time, especially during the summer when dawn comes early and sunsets linger far into dusk.

Led by SCA Vice President Reeve Woolpert, the SCA began a drawn-out wrangle with the county over the changed hours.

The Santa Barbara Independent covered the story. Surfers checked in, observing that while Loon Point offered some fine surfing, they particularly valued the ability to take advantage of the early and late hours, the “dawn patrol,” and “evening glass-off,” when the wind was down and conditions were calm.

The Coastal Commission has now weighed in on the matter, ruling that the locked gate and restricted hours constitute unpermitted development, a violation of the Coastal Act. They’ve advised the county to remove the gate and restore beach access to the previous hours. If the county wishes to keep the gate (and abbreviated hours), they will have to apply for a Coastal Development Permit.

Changes in Lookout Park?

Well, maybe. Eventually. The SCA has been in dialogue with county parks for the last few months (years?) about how best to maximize the space in our little county park. The thing about Lookout is that it pretty much functions as the town’s only green space. Houses on steep hills are close together. Parks or open spaces for recreation don’t exist. Birthday parties or big family gatherings happen in Lookout Park. Plus it’s hugely popular with the beach-loving public on weekends.

Lookout Park’s diminutive size has always been a constraint. It needs to grow, and the only available grow space is at the east end of the park. That prime spot has been occupied by two park hosts ever since the ranger moved out quite a few years ago. It seemed only reasonable to move the park hosts (why two?) to a smaller plot and enlarge the park’s footprint using that big new space. Reasonable, but not obvious to the slow movers at county parks.

There were meetings, discussions, promises, retracted promises, deadlines, missed deadlines, proposals and coun-

terproposals (some of us are still fuming from the battle we had with parks over their proposal to place two rental cabins in that spot). I don’t even want to think of how many times I’ve written about his over the years. Literally.

Now, with Brian Yanez as Deputy Parks Director we seem to be gaining some traction. He did a walk-through of the park with SCA reps last month. It’s been agreed that the park host will be moved to the upper end of the park. Turns out only one host is needed after all. Plans have been floated for a new host space design, and a contractor will be selected.

The big vacated space will finally be

opened up for public use. According to Yanez, removal of dead and dying eucalyptus trees in the area is scheduled for May 31 and will take two to three days. He provided the SCA with a new conceptual design featuring picnic tables, an outdoor kitchen center and a group area grill. The design and placement of these amenities will be subject to further community discussion and approval.

Interestingly, the proposal calls for tables and bench seating to be constructed using reclaimed lumber salvaged from the removed eucalyptus trees. Can’t wait to see how this turns out. Also, we’ll be waiting to see how soon any of this gets

done because, of course, there is always the question of funds. But at least—and finally—we’re headed in the right direction.

Volunteering: It’s a family affair

mission possible barbara dunlap If a book were written about volunteering in Carpinteria, it would have to include a chapter called “Family Ties.”

Sisters Marybeth Carty and Geri Ann Carty and their brother Mike Lazaro have participated in—or launched—countless programs for local nonprofits since they arrived in town decades ago.

The siblings downplay their own roles but praise each other, and they give credit to the community as well. “In Carp, you can think of something that’s valuable and needs to be done, and you can make it happen,” Geri says. “You don’t see that in a lot of places.”

Carpinteria has shown its appreciation in return. Mike was Carpinterian of the Year in 1996, and Marybeth received that honor in 2001. Geri received a Girls Inc. Women of Inspiration award in 2016.

On Earth Day this year, Mike was busy coordinating events, but his sisters sat

down with Mission Possible to share their thoughts about volunteering.

It’s unusual that three members of one family are so active in a community.

Were your parents role models in this respect?

MB: It does seem to be in our DNA. Our mom raised five kids and went back to work as a registered nurse, but she still volunteered at our schools and the church. Geri and Mike are extremely active in the Plaza Playhouse Theater. What does that entail?

GA: We’re on the executive board, and it’s a working board. We run concessions, do the cleaning and manage ticket sales.

We hold lots of special events such as children’s workshops and the Rotary Talent Show. The theater also produces plays—recently, a 96-year-old produced his first show. It’s a community-spirited place.

Mike started CarpStrong events at the theater. We identify someone in need, for instance, a family whose house burned down. We put on a performance to benefit those people and to bring awareness to their situation. People are so interested and willing to help.

Marybeth is a driving force behind today’s Woman’s Club, and Geri participates, too. Please tell more about the club and its activities.

MB: The club is very rich in history, but its grandes dames were tired of keeping

the building up, and they were going to give the charter to the city. We revitalized it in 1995, and Geri has been facilities chair and I’ve been president ever since.

The club’s mission is to promote arts, education, philanthropy and community action. The venue is available for community use, and we present an interesting program every month. Everyone is welcome.

GA: We also hold a student art contest to recognize creative achievement. We collaborate with the Carpinteria Arts Center, and the students’ work is exhibited at the center for two weeks. Kids who’ve never had their ability recognized are so empowered by this recognition.

Geri was on the board of Girls Inc. for four years. Please talk about that experience.

GA: It’s an incredible program for kids.

I helped wherever I could. I did community outreach and worked on fundraisers, auctions and the Women of Inspiration luncheon. We also did a lot of work on facility improvement.

Marybeth is a strong advocate of education in this county. Please tell us where—and why—you volunteer.

MB: Everything our family does helps strengthen the community, and I seem to start with kids. Education is an underpinning of what I choose to do.

I’m proud to be president of Partners in Education, which connects business and education in meaningful ways. I serve on THRIVE Carp’s executive committee, and I’m active in the Fighting Back Mentor Program. I’m also president of the Santa Barbara County Board of Education. That’s an important part of my life.

My father-in-law (Doc Carty) held that office, too.

Geri and Mike work on the Independence Parade, the Holiday Spirit Parade and the Hospice Tree Lighting, and you all are very active in events such as Rods & Roses, the Carpinteria Triathlon and the Avocado Festival. How would you sum up your collaborative work?

MB: We’re good at predicting each other’s needs.

GA: The best part is having family and friends work with you. It makes the work that much easier.

MB: We’re a network in Carp—we’re connected. It’s more fun to do things collectively toward the greater good.

Warrior tennis players shine on court and off

The 2017 Carpinteria High School boys tennis team proved to be a talented and persistent band of racquet wielders, capturing the school’s first league title since 2010. With a 5-1 record, the Warriors ended their season sharing the Foothill League crown with Foothill Tech.

Coach Charles Bryant’s squad isn’t one that will likely be found hanging out at the nearby country club. “I say nine out of 10 of them had never even hit a tennis ball before coming to high school, which is usually the case with CHS. But they are great learners and students and they make a strong effort, day in and day out,” said the coach.

The team also seems to have a wide variety of interests. Four-year player Jacob Ascencio has an ambition that isn’t often shared by many high school seniors these days. “I want to be a wrestler when I grow up,” said Ascencio whose idols include wrestling legends Hulk Hogan and “Macho Man” Randy Savage. Ascencio also cited video games and, of course, tennis, as some of his other hobbies.

Meanwhile, sophomore Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson whose doubles play with senior partner Sam Truax was instrumental in helping the Warriors earn a share of the title, has several interests off the courts. “I like water polo and soccer,” said Nahooikaika-Anderson, who also plays the other two sports at CHS. Truax, the second half of the tennis duo, said, “I go running often whenever I’m not playing tennis and, then in school, I really am a fan of the performing arts, like acting and music.”

Junior Jeremy Saito has an elite lineage when it comes to CHS tennis. Sisters Erin and Natalie collectively won CIF tennis titles in 2013, 2014 and 2015 for the school, and his uncle, Jeff Saito, is currently serving as an assistant for Bryant. Jeff’s daughter, Erin, also played on those winning teams. But Jeremy has interests aside from tennis. “I enjoy tennis; I’m also in the marching band, and all the band stuff with Ms. (Elise) Unruh (CHS Director of Performing Arts), so that’s fun,” said the current singles player who grew up playing baseball before taking up tennis in high school.

Although the Warriors ended up on top this season, it was a season full of ups and downs. “For them to even compete against some of the teams we go up against, really says a lot about their fortitude,” explained Bryant whose team dropped four matches in a row at one point, finishing 8-10 overall. “I really feel they improve

With Nahooikaika-Anderson and his brother Solomon returning, along with Kirby Zapata and Jeremy, it looks as though the Warriors should be competitive again next year.

March 11 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team in a non-league game against Cabrillo lost at Calderwood Field by a score of 5-3. Chase Mayer pitched five innings for the Warriors, giving up a single run on two hits, while striking out five. David Martinez at the plate for the Warriors drove in two runs, singling twice. Carpinteria led 3-1 in the seventh but could not hold on as the Conquistadores scored four and then shut down the Warriors in the home half to secure the 5-3 win. “The group can compete against good clubs like Cabrillo,” said Warriors coach Pat Cooney. “We need to continue to fit the pieces together over the next couple of games so that we can meet our potential.”

In the Boys 4x100 Medley Relay with senior Sal Briceno, freshman Caleb Classen, junior Jordan Perez and freshman Nathan Endow, the Warriors lapped the field and finished first in the event. In the 8x50 Freestyle Relay for the girls, freshman Sadie Mead, sophomore Amy Perez, junior Emily Dutch, senior Foster’s Freeze, Carpinteria Leilanie Silva and freshmen Olivia Sheaffer, Sydney Endow, Lexi Persoon, along El Carro Park, Carpinteria with sophomore Jessica Cruz also finished in first place. Next up was the same even but for the boys with Briceno, Classen, Perez, senior Josh Kitt, juniors Connor Van Wingerden, Ryan Fly, Michael Leonard and Danny Carrera who also finished first as well. Then came the Girls 4x50 Backstroke Relay with Cruz starting off in the lead, while from there the gap grew as Perez and Silva and Mead finished the race in first also. In the 4x100 Relay for the girls, Cruz, Mead, Endow and Persoon clinched the final first place finish on the girls side and swam a CIF consideration time of 4:20.59.

What’s in the bag?

On May 18 at approximately 8:40 p.m. a deputy on bicycle patrol stopped in front of a donut shop on Casitas Pass Road to speak with a man about his sobriety from narcotics use and a woman who was with him, who the deputy knew was on probation from “prior contacts.” The woman had a red backpack, and when the deputy asked he if she had anything illegal inside it, she told him that she had a small amount of meth and a meth pipe.

The deputy located 2 grams of meth in the backpack. The woman said she had to turn away to retrieve her meth pipe from her shirt, which she turned over to the deputy. The deputy then arrested the woman and transported her to Santa Barbara County Jail.

On May 21 at approximately 8 a.m. deputies went to a residence on Dorrance Way to attempt to contact a man with two no-bail warrants whose last known address was the Dorrance Way residence.

The reporting deputy stated that he “had information” that the man was living in a shed on the property, and the two responding deputies approached quietly and stood outside listening. They noticed a lock with a key in it hanging open and then saw a hand reach out to open the door. The deputies then announced their presence, and a woman inside said that she need to get clothes on before she could come out.

When the woman emerged the deputies asked if the man was inside the shed, and she said he was not. They also asked if there was anything illegal inside the shed, and the woman responded that there was not. As the reporting deputy attempted to enter the shed, the woman told him that the man in question was inside. The man was under the covers of a bed inside the shed and came out without incident after the deputy announced that

he knew the man was inside. The deputy arrested the man for the outstanding warrant and found a meth pipe in the shed, which the man had admitted was there. He was taken to Santa Barbara County Jail.

On May 21 at approximately 10:40 p.m. a deputy observed a man in a motel parking lot on Via Real throwing items around inside his BMW and moving in and out of the vehicle quickly. “This behavior appeared odd,” the deputy reported, “so I attempted to consensually encounter him.” The deputy asked the man if he was OK, and the man said he had just taken a room at the motel but had not received a key.

Although the evening was cool, the deputy reported that the man was sweating, throwing his arms around as he spoke, and that he was yelling. The deputy suspected that the man was on meth. The deputy attempted to ask the man about his vehicle, and the man responded to his questions, then began yelling again, rambling and being “fidgety.” When asked if he was on probation the man became irate and told the deputy that he hadn’t done anything wrong and that the deputy was hassling him. The deputy attempted to explain that he believed the man was high on meth, but the man interrupted him and said, “I’m not going to do s---. I’m not f----ing playing with you. I don’t like you mother-----ers.”

The man had a large folding pocket knife clipped to the outside of his front pants pocket, and because he was much larger than the deputy, the deputy called for assistance and requested that his partners come in with their sirens on.

Multiple units responded, and the man “became more compliant.” Upon being placed in handcuffs, the man said he had “drugs” in his pocket, and the deputy found a plastic baggie with suspected methamphetamine. The man had a warrant from the Long Beach Police Department, who said they would extradite.

The man said he had been awake for four days, and continued yelling en route to jail, talking about shooting law enforcement personnel with an AK-47.

Upon being booked in Santa Barbara County Jail, deputies found a straw and a rolled up dollar bill, both with meth residue, and the man was charged for possessing those items as well.

Two lines

On May 22 at approximately 7:50 p.m. a deputy responded to a residence on 9th Street on a report of a man jumping over a wall onto private property. The woman who called the Sheriff’s office said the man was wearing a red shirt with white lettering, and that he had jumped over several walls in the neighborhood, including hers. The deputy then saw a man (later identified as being on Santa Barbara County probation) matching the description walking northbound on

Reynolds Avenue towards the Highway 101 on ramp. Another woman driving a silver SUV flagged the reporting deputy down and said, “That’s him, that’s the guy,” according to the deputy’s report.

Due to the man’s rapid speech, body tremors, body sweats and bruxism (gnashing of teeth), the deputy suspected he was under the influence of methamphetamine. Because the man was on probation and appeared to be under the influence of drugs, the deputy placed him under arrest. The man said he had only jumped over his grandfather’s wall, but could not provide an address for the property. Although the man refused to provide a urine sample for a drug test, he said that he had snorted two lines of meth at around 5 p.m. The county probation department informed deputies that the man had a felony arrest warrant out, although it had not yet appeared in the Sheriff’s system. The man was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

The written report describing the measures to be taken to alleviate the conditions will be available for public review at the Carpinteria City Hall on Thursday, June 8, 2017. Additionally, a copy of Ordinance No. 716 and an accompanying staff report providing additional background information and summarizing the status of ongoing work related to the regulation of commercial marijuana will be available for public review at the Carpinteria City Hall and on the City website at www. carpinteria.ca.us on Thursday, June 8, 2017. All persons are entitled to attend the public hearing and provide the City Council with written and oral comments or to ask questions regarding this matter.

Boys & Girls Club highlights new programs

Director Debra Herrick thanked Morning Rotary members at a recent meeting for their support of the boys & Girls Club this year and shared highlights of its new programs. In addition to sports, physical fitness and recreation, she shared that there is a big emphasis on the arts for all kids. Art is a form of self-expression and builds self-esteem, Herrick noted. In cooperation with the Carpinteria Arts Center, several new programs have been added and the kids love them. Teen Center Director Ana Thorne also shared new programs for the older kids including culinary skills, technological skills, Money Matters, personal skills and family friendly events. one recent event was “Women’s Wednesday” where teens made their own lip gloss. The bond formed between two teens who seem to come from different planets keeps the pages turning on “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. The work of teen lit will be discussed by the Carpinteria Library Book Club at its next meeting on Tuesday, June 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the library, 5141 Carpinteria Ave. The novel focuses on Aristotle, an angry teen with a brother in prison, and Dante, a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. Publishers Weekly calls the Printz Honor Book a “tender, honest exploration of identity.” Anyone interested in attending the meeting is welcome to check out a copy of the book from the library in advance. Cate School holds 104th commencement

On May 28, Cate School held its 104th graduation ceremony. Sixty-seven seniors received their diplomas and class member Francesco Duffy-Boscagli gave the student address, in which he likened the Cate experience to the “longest-running studyoriented sleepover.” the school’s highest honor, the William Shepard biddle Cup, was awarded to henry dawson of Washington d.C. highest academic recognition was awarded to Bryce Huerta of Santa Barbara, who will continue his studies at Stanford university.

CHS wins state competition

Carpinteria high School’s drop Stop team traveled to orange County on may 19 to participate in Get a taste of Success, an entrepreneurial idea pitch competition like the television show “Shark Tank,” where state finalists compete before industry leaders, educators, activists and potential investors. Community college and high school students went head to head, and Carpinteria High School took first place along with a $1,500 prize for their drop Stop water-use monitoring device. ChS was in the competition for the first time, and students Mikayla Blair, Iliana Esquivel, Jeanette Fantone, diana Gonzalez and Samantha Saenz represented the school at the state level of competition. The full team is comprised of members Amanda and Mikayla Blair, Iliana Esquivel, Jeanette Fantone, Diana Gonzalez, Olivia Light, Samantha Saenz, Chloe and Oakley Singer and Montana Wilcox. Howard School students recently harvested delicious green beans and zucchini from their garden and sampled roasted veggies, then prepared loaves of banana zucchini bread to share with their families. Students will create an end of the year salad feast as a part of the howard School gardening and cooking science curriculum.

Sixth-graders at Carpinteria middle School competed in the annual Goofy Greek Games on may 5. over 100 athletes competed in events including the javelin, discus, boxing, wrestling, shot put, arm wrestling, short and long jumps and the marathon.

Sixth-grade teacher Kevin o’hara wrote that, “Victors were crowned with laurel wreaths, a lifetime free of taxes, and the opportunity to lead the community into a scrumptious Greek feast.” As of press time, there was no comment from the IRS regarding the students’ tax-free status.

Sometimes it feels frustrating to find that we, as doctors, don’t always have the tools to really “fix” it for your sweet, furry friend. The positive side of this is that as our world moves through this unprecedented time of transition, some amazing natural, ancient medical breakthroughs have been unearthed, reinstated and are being practiced by your local veterinarian!

About two months ago a sweet, Bambieyed little dachshund named Trixie came to the clinic, barely able to hold up her head. She was on multiple pain medications, had been through a series of X-rays and was out of options short of surgery.

Her person, Lisa, wanted to exhaust all options before considering the recommended disc surgery.

As a graduate of the IVAS veterinary acupuncture course, I was actually excited about Trixie’s possibilities. She was such a brave little soul, but it was obvious she was really in distress and could barely move her neck. I made no promises, but formulated an approach that included acupuncture, gentle chiropractic veterinary orthopedic manipulation (VOM) activator technique and some changes in her medication protocol.

In a matter of two weeks, this little dog was trotting around her house, holding her head up and “smiling.” I didn’t quite believe it, but I saw it for myself. As

the next weeks progressed, I waited for things to reverse, backslide and for the disc to act up again. It never happened!

Not only was there no loss of progress, but Trixie had actually jumped up for the first time in months! I had to smile even while reminding Trixie’s owner to keep her from doing that.

Since then there have been many instances in which a dog or cat has had a complete turnaround in their symptoms of stiffness, back pain or soft tissue injury. The longer a pet has the problem, the more patience may be needed before results come, but in my experience there is visible improvement in the first five sessions of acupuncture.

Some of the most common and useful integrative options to enhance treatment include acupuncture, chiropractic care, NAET (acupressure treatment for allergy), herbal medicine, homeopathy, Reiki, massage and functional nutrition.

Often the question is, “Doctor, should I start with holistic/natural medicine or Western medicine first?” There are various opinions, but as a veterinarian, I feel it is imperative that a proper diagnosis is made. Even when using Chinese medicine, which gives us a lot of information by simply observing and touching the animal, I still like to back up things with X-rays, blood testing, fecal and urine samples and the like. This gives us the true result of an integrated approach and the chance at the most comprehensive approach to helping your pet heal.

When Diana Simpson brought home a barn kitten from the Santa Barbara Humane Society four years ago, she did so with trepidation. How would little Oscar get along with her older cat Reggie? How would he fit into the household? The two-cat family weathered some storms— like Oscar ’s toys-in-the-toilet phase—and came out far happier for the addition.
