Briefly School board meeting schedule veers off course

due to lack of a quorum (enough board members for a vote), the Carpinteria Unified School District’s Board of Education’s regular meeting of June 13 has been rescheduled to Monday, June 19 at 8 a.m. at the District Office, 1400 Linden Ave. The June 27 regular board meeting will include the presentation and public hearings for both the Local Control and Accountability plan (LCAp) and the proposed adopted budget for 2017-18, along with the other usual items. That meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. Since the board cannot hear and vote on the LCAp and budget on the same day, there will be a special board meeting the following day, June 28, at 7:30 a.m. in the District Office. The draft LCAP and proposed 2017-18 Adopted Budget will be posted at cusd.net on or before June 9.

Cate School students paint two playhouses on their campus for delivery to those in need.

Cate students provide place to play

Volunteers from Cate School and habitat for humanity rolled up their sleeves on may 19 and built two playhouses, one for Carpinteria Children’s project and one for a local low-income family. the project was part of habitat’s playhouse program, which offers youth under the age of 16 a fun and meaningful way to volunteer with Habitat. The nonprofit does not allow youths to volunteer at traditional Habitat construction sites. the students who participated in the playhouse build were part of Cate School’s habitat for humanity club. they fundraised to help cover the costs of materials and tools and worked with Habitat for Humanity to select the beneficiaries of the playhouses. the students assembled the structure, painted the trim, built the roof and painted the full playhouse.

Burglary spree drops off, no arrests yet

the wave of overnight business burglaries that recently hit Carpinteria has tapered off, Lieutenant mike perkins of the Santa barbara County Sheriff’s department said this week. About a dozen Carpinteria businesses reported break-ins and stolen cash between mid-April and mid-May, but no additional reports were filed in the last couple weeks. perkins said that no arrests have been made for the crimes, but that could mean that the perpetrator was arrested for an unrelated crime. Santa barbara and Ventura counties also experienced similar crime sprees at the same time as Carpinteria’s. though fewer incidents have taken places in those surrounding areas recently, perkins said that Santa barbara experienced a couple break-ins in the last week.

Weed woes: Residents file marijuana-growing complaints

When Proposition 64 passed at the ballot box last November and paved the way for recreational sales and use of marijuana, Carpinterians in everincreasing numbers began commenting on the skunky smell lingering in pockets throughout the valley. The county and city are both grappling with how to regulate marijuana commerce on the brink of state legalization, and residents can play a role in crafting regulations by voicing their concerns or support.

As of last month, 12 zoning code violation complaints related to marijuana growing have been filed with Santa Barbara County since September 2016. Complainants are asked to provide evidence of an illegal marijuana-growing operation, which could be direct observation or smells coming from a specific property.

The property suspected of illegal growing must be identified with an address.

School district announces staffing cuts and movement

Following a May 23 vote by the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education to approve budget cuts for staffing, the district’s executive leadership team decided on positions to eliminate and duties to shuffle among remaining staff. Cuts were controversial, but administrators and the board majority determined they were the best path to maintaining district solvency.

Rincon/Foothill high schools will lose one of its three teachers, which Acting Superintendent Jamie Persoon said more closely aligns the student/teacher ratios at the alternative high schools with the other programs in the district.

Barnaby Gloger, principal of Rincon/ Foothill, will no longer also be the principal of the Carpinteria Family School.

Instead, he will take on compliance programs and categorical programs like AVID, Title 1, Title 3, Federal Program Monitoring, textbooks and curriculum management and ordering, reporting to state and federal officials, and data management system for the district. Persoon will continue as Canalino School principal and become principal of CFS, which shares a campus with Canalino.

Carpinteria Middle School Principal Shannon Coletti resigned in March, and the district recently hired her replacement, Ron Briggs, who spent the last three years working as the assistant principal at Foothill Technology High School in Ventura.

Diana Rigby will begin as the district’s new superintendent July 1, on the heels of a school year marked by turmoil. Temporary administrators Jeff Chancer, then Persoon, led the district over the last nine months as a result of the board’s abrupt release of Superintendent Micheline Miglis last August.

A position titled Director of Special Programs was created in December and never filled. It was eliminated in this round of cuts, and its duties will be assigned by the new superintendent.

The Santa Barbara Air Pollution Control District fields odor complaints but refers them to the county. APCD representative Lyz Hoffman said, “We don’t have jurisdiction over odors emanating from growing marijuana.” Agricultural operations, she explained, aren’t subject to odor-nuisance provisions of state law.

Growing operations exist mainly outside of Carpinteria’s city limits on agricultural properties in unincorporated Santa Barbara County. The county enacted a moratorium on new marijuana operations, but growers who can prove they were legally cultivating medicinal marijuana prior to January 2016 were grandfathered in.

Of the dozen complaints filed in Carpinteria Valley, four cases have been closed. One illegal marijuana growing operation was stopped, and three suspected growers were found to not be cultivating

marijuana. Eight cases remain open as the county makes its way through the investigation process. “When you’re dealing with smell, it’s hard,” said Supervising Planner Petra Leyva. “We try to work with the reporting party.”

Once a complaint is filed, the county sends a letter to the property owner requesting a follow-up. Next a site visit is planned and, “We go out to the site and determine if there is a violation,” said Leyva.

The simplest requirements are addressed first, such as the legal proximity to a school. “Are you 600 feet from a school? Yes? Okay, you’re done,” said Leyva as an example. Proving that cultivation began before the moratorium can be more complicated. Leases can be used as evidence, among other documentation.

If the grower fails to respond to the county’s initial letter, county staff does

a “drive-by” site inspection, Leyva said, and determines whether a violation is visible from the road or from the complainant’s property. Growers are given 30 days to correct any violations, and fines in increasingly larger amounts are then levied. Leyva said that the fine itself may not dissuade cultivation of the lucrative crop, but that growers looking to achieve long-term legal status with the county will want clean records.

Dr. Smith celebrates 25 years of vet care

In his 25 years caring for local pets, dr.

Scott Smith has seen it all—goats, ferrets, pigs and even a sugar glider. The owner of Animal Medical Clinic in Shepard Plaza said that whether it’s exotic pets or dogs with fleas, he loves being a vet, and particularly loves being a small-town vet.

The clinic initially opened in 1979 and operated under two different owners before Smith purchased the practice in November 1991. At that point, Smith’s doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from U.C. davis was just two years old. He put long hours into his business, building it slowly over time and transforming it into its current state of “crazy busy.”

Smith calls the work “gratifying.” He originally set out to be a jazz saxophonist, earning a bachelors degree in music before deciding that settling down and having a family would be best accomplished with a career shift. He completed his science requirements at U.C. Santa Barbara and worked at St. Francis Pet Clinic in Santa Barbara before transferring to U.C. Davis. After vet school, he went back to St. Francis, working with his mentor and expecting to take over the practice eventually. But the Carpinteria office became available, and he made the leap.

Smith dedicates a significant portion of time to charity work. He has completed over 1,500 low cost spay/neuters with organizations like Care 4 Paws. He also provides vet care for animals in need

Now that business is bustling, Smith hopes to add a second vet to the office

in the next couple years. He has earned vacation time. Retirement, however, is nowhere in sight. “As long as I’m healthy and able, I plan to keep working,” he said.

Watts Automotive closes doors after 17 years

Mary and Tom Watts spend their last day on the job tying up loose ends before closing up shop.

Tom and Mary Watts have spent the last 17 years helping Carpinteria’s cars pass the smog test. on June 2, however, the local couple closed the garage doors at Tom Watts Automotive and gratefully hung up their hats as business owners.

Rising costs motivated their decision. At Tom’s new job as senior mechanic for the County of Ventura, he and Mary will have health insurance for a small fraction of the cost they shoulder now.

The Wattses decided to open their shop at 5292 Carpinteria Ave. when Tom had 16 years of experience working as a mechanic in Santa Barbara and Go-

leta garages. The couple divided tasks at the shop—Mary worked as the “office queen” while Tom spent his time under the hood. They raised four children over their years in the business.

“It’s bittersweet,” said Mary, of the shop’s closure. She emphasized how grateful she and Tom are for the loyal customers who helped them earn a livelihood in their small town.

Locals looking for a smog check can still find it in Carpinteria. Both Risdon’s Auto Care Center on Palm Avenue and Rosebro Garage on Holly Avenue offer the service.

United we stand

J.K. Rowling writes, “We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.” On Tuesday, May 30, I attended the End of Year Concert at Carpinteria Middle School that featured third-graders on the recorder and fourth-graders playing band instruments. Concert director Tom Pavia noted how great it was to have all four elementary schools in CUSD so well represented. The kids seemed excited, and they were all playing in unison.

With Washington planning to cut funding for public schools, now is the time for us to raise our voices in unison to support public education. We should be lifting each other up, not tearing each other down. Wouldn’t it be great if each grade level across all four CUSD elementary schools participated in the same learning project across the board (e.g., the fifthgrade science project), so we could hold a big project fair for all our elementary school students together, perhaps even at Carpinteria High School? This way the kids could showcase a meaningful project, continue to bond as CUSD students, and envision themselves as CHS class of 2026, for instance.

Thank you, Mr. Pavia, for showing us the way! Together we’re so much stronger than we are apart.

Board secrecy is the law

After reading several letters over the past weeks regarding the Aliso principal and the two CUSD board members, I feel there needs to be a factual response.

Teacher Macias’s letter in last week’s Coastal View News was particularly disturbing because he either knows little of public meeting and labor laws or he is using questionable tactics to garner support.

No, I don’t have any more “inside” info than anyone else. But having been on the board for several years, I do know that there were only two board members involved because any more than that would be a violation of the Brown Act, which is a law that narrowly dictates how/when public officials can gather.

As to a “shroud of secrecy” (Macias’ words), personnel issues are by law absolutely confidential. The employee can say anything they want, but the employer can’t publicly respond. So saying it was in the best interest of the district is the only response they can give. Then to say the board is driven by personal interests is absurd. Being a board member has no financial compensation and requires many hours of meetings and reading material for those meetings. The only compen-

Aliso teacher weighs in

Last week, there were some letters written discussing the role of Summerland School within Carpinteria Unified School District and recent actions conducted by our school board members. As an educator within the district I encourage community members to be involved within the discussion; however, it is important to point out some misinformation being presented within recent letters. It is our responsibility to make sure that only the facts of this situation are presented.

First, we want to make it clear that in no way are the teachers at Aliso talking about shutting down Summerland School, nor do we have a qualm with Summerland School. Similar to Aliso, Summerland School provides necessary services to the students within its school, and we teachers at Aliso want to continue to work alongside Summerland School to provide quality education for the children of our community.

In response to Mrs. Perlin’s letter, there seem to have been some key facts that have been misrepresented. In the letter it was stated that the teachers at Aliso were spreading “propaganda” to students.

There are two required corrections within this statement. First, no student was given a flyer by any teachers at Aliso. The flyers were only handed out to parents and were done so off the school campus. The issue being discussed is meant for the parents of our community, and the flyers were providing the parents information about actions taken against our principal.

The second correction needed is with the word propaganda itself. The information provided on the flyers was all true and correct, bringing some necessary and vital transparency to the community.

Andy Sheaffer himself was quoted in the Coastal View News saying that he and Jaclyn Fabre acted alone and without consent from the other board members in the decision to attempt to dismiss Dr. Fox. Not only did that decision undermine Maureen Foley Claffey, Rogelio Delgado and Michelle Robertson, but also the community members who voted for them.

It is such an honor to work with the incredible educators at Aliso Elementary as we strive to provide our students with a bright future. I look forward to many more years of serving the Carpinteria community.

No more us and them

After reading the articles and letters presented over the course of the last few weeks there are a few arguments I would like to address. It seems totally inappropriate that two school board members would act without the consent or knowledge of the other board members.

According to the NSBA.org, there are eight guidelines for an effectively run school board, four of which have not been followed by their recent actions, including “strong shared beliefs…,” “accountability driven,” “a collaborative relationship with staff and the community,” and “Lead as a united team.”

I appreciate the opinion pieces by Donnie Nair and Melinda Wittwer. It’s so important to address the concerns about the differences in population. What I don’t understand about letter-writer Elizabeth Perlin’s math is that it is not an issue of moving 2.5 students per grade to improve scores—it is not as simple as that. The issue is that the students in Carpinteria have higher language needs and have larger class sizes. One third-grade class was over two-thirds ESL students and had 27 students in total versus the average class size of 17 at Summerland.

One criteria listed by The National School Boards Association is “strong shared beliefs and values…and its ability to teach all children at high levels.” According to the Center for Public Education (CPE. org), “Minority and low-income students show even greater gains when placed in small classes in the primary grades.”

Maybe, instead of closing the Summerland School as inferred by another letter writer, the district should bus some Carpinteria students to Summerland to not only even out the class sizes and provide better education, but also offer the same diversity that enriches Carpinteria schools.

Most importantly, the district needs to be more unified among the schools, beginning with a more collaborative school board. It should be Summerland and Carpinteria. Not Summerland versus Carpinteria versus the school board. Everyone loses in the latter—our children more so than anyone.

Look to the School Board

Amid debates that include racial demographics and household incomes, I would like to bring the focus back to what, in my opinion, is the real issue in the recent CUSD discussions. To me, the issue at hand is the fact that the school board is undoubtedly failing at providing the appropriate resources to our schools, teachers and most importantly, students.

The board members have a history of making decisions without clear reasoning and zero transparency. The same transparency I would expect from any other

elected official. I make no assumptions as to the actual reasons why they dismissed the superintendent before she actually had a chance to fulfill her duties. I only wish to draw attention to the fact that this decision left a power vacuum at top of the administrative infrastructure, not to mention the fact that it left a $100,000 hole in the pockets of CUSD because her contract guaranteed payment whether or not she was allowed to perform her job.

Fast forward to the end of this school year and we have the attempted removal of a principal, who was not in command of one school but two. Again, another decision made by the board without reasoning or transparency. I fear what could have happened if the principal of two schools was removed just weeks before one of the busiest times of the school year.

Yet another missing piece to the education puzzle that could have been removed by the board.

As a lifetime resident of Carpinteria and product of CUSD, I truly care about the future of both Carpinteria and Summerland. This debate isn’t about test scores or demographics, it’s about how we, as a community, can best support our children’s education and whether the school board has the same interests in mind.

Putting trust in Sheaffer

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said it best, “I think the jobs (at the top) are unbelievably difficult, and there is nothing easier than secondguessing people.”

Andy Sheaffer is a graduate of Carpinteria High School and UCSB, where he competed in Track and Field and earned All-American honors. He founded Ais Construction Company, a successful and highly respected business that provides specialized excavation services worldwide.

He supports not only our schools, but also The Boys and Girls Club, Troop 50 of the Boy Scouts, and Little League Baseball. He is active in the Carpinteria Education Foundation, Carpinteria Boosters Club and officiates at the Russell Cup. He has donated his time, money, and equipment to help with the construction of Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium and the track and infield at Aliso School.

Andy is a dedicated school board member who takes the time to learn the many duties of being a responsible public official. He uses the resources of our District Office, the Office of the County Superintendent of Schools, the Santa Barbara Auditor’s Office, School Services of California (advocacy resource for educational agencies), the California School Board Association (strengthens and promotes school board governance) and the Legislative Analyst’s Office (provides nonpartisan analyses of state budget and educational policies) to make informed financial and personnel decisions that have long-term consequences for our District.

Was it the right decision for Andy and his fellow board members to unanimously dismiss Superintendent Miglis at the beginning of the school year? Because of laws pertaining to personnel issues, we (the public) are not to know what those reasons were. We can only trust that it was the right decision. Given the financial consequences, it was a very difficult one.

I trust Andy because of who he is, what he stands for, and his concern for what is best for the district and our students.

Dear children of America, your president is not a role model. Historically, presidents are—but not this one.

You’re going to hear people call Trump a pathological liar, because he is.

You’re going to hear people call him a misogynist. He’s that, too. You’re going to hear he’s a narcissist with authoritarian tendencies.

Trump is an architect of the birther movement, a mostly racist group that tried to delegitimize Barack Obama as president, and as an American. Trump also told America—without evidence— that Obama wiretapped him, calling the former president, “Bad (or sick).” These are examples of a reckless, pathological liar.

Your president has no remorse. He has no sense of guilt, conscience or shame.

These truths are predicated on Trump’s pattern of behavior. He’s not trustworthy, and he’s not interested in the drudgery of facts.

Trump is about Trump. Don’t believe him when he says, “I alone can fix it,” or when he claims, “I am your voice.” These are statements of a delusional individual, not only disconnected from people in general, but from distinguishable truths that you, as younger Americans, already understand.

Trump wants America to normalize his behavior. He doesn’t want to be challenged or exposed. Regardless of the situation or person, he uses the same childish insults on all. “Terrible,” “sad,” “overrated” and “stupid” are examples of his laughably dismal intellectual output.

Don’t think truth doesn’t matter anymore. No matter what you hear, trust your instincts, and challenge those who bully others, and lie.

The hardest thing for some to hear is that Trump is as I’ve described. He’s created his own reality, and he’s paying the price. What’s worse, though, is when he gets people to believe that everything he says and does as president is OK. You’re the ones who determine what’s OK.

Granny flats fit for ADA

The Americans with Disabilities Act protects the civil liberties of people with special needs making exclusion a discrimination enforceable before the courts. In my attempt to understand the diminishing compliance with ADA guidelines, especially the absence of wheelchair accessible rentals that the

Olmsted Act mandates and the Constitution of the United States of America protect, it appears that some are not held to our nation’s laws.

Accessory Dwelling Units were approved by the State of California to increase the number of units in the housing stock not as vacation rentals. Or taxexempt investments by corporations and LLC not held to Federal Law. Why not require that ADU be accessible or adaptable to accessible to provide appropriate housing for some of the 70 million boomers in this country alone who could experience problems with limited mobility as we age. You wouldn’t want to have to shoot your granny if she breaks a hip!

And if they end up as vacation rentals, at least there is a possibility that they would provide ADA-compliant short time vacation rentals.

A new low

When President Trump announced on June 1 that he was withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement the entire world reached an all-time low in the protection of our earth, the environment and its inhabitants. Trump’s misguided, illogical and irresponsible action defies all explanations and serves only as a political statement intended to impress his base and stroke his ego. The justification given for this action is not based on facts or evidence but more of the campaign rhetoric we have heard time and time again.

Scientists, world leaders, corporate executives, government officials and a majority of the U.S. population all weighed in to promote retaining the agreement, yet Trump continued on with his path of global shame and embarrassment. If this weren’t enough to convince him that climate change is real and having global impacts, consider the increase in Arctic and Antarctic sea ice melt, glacial retreat and extreme weather events. Trump turned his back on the world in the fight to mitigate global warming and it is a challenge that all nations must work together on. CHS athletics gender equality falls short

In a self-induced, rigorous assessment of its compliance to Title IX—the monumental gender equity in education act of 1972—Carpinteria High School was found by consulting firm Sports Management Resources to be noncompliant in several areas related to gender equality in athletics. A greater percentage of the school’s male population participates in athletics than its females, and there are fewer opportunities for the girls to join teams. To remedy the situation, the school’s Title IX committee proposes adding a stunt team to close the gap and create more places for girls in competition.

The CHS Title IX Committee presented findings of the 155-page assessment at the May 23 Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education meeting and stated that while there are many measures that need to be taken to nudge the school into compliance, CHS athletics has come out of the assessment with an executable plan.

“Are we not in compliance? As a parent sitting on this committee, yes,” commented committee member Paul Pettine at the school board meeting. “But as a parent coming onto this committee, reading the report, listening to everything, we’re doing a pretty good job.”

In addition to adding a stunt team to create greater opportunities for female student-athletes, greater monitoring is needed to ensure that facilities, coaches, funding and transportation access are delivered to both genders in equal portions.

The report digs so deeply into treatment of each gender that it recommends all team dinners held by parents be accounted for in order for the school to strike a balance for players of the opposite sex—even if the team dinner is outside regular school programs. Also, turf conditions of each gender’s practice fields and their team schedules were closely analyzed to gauge if either gender was getting preferential treatment. The report recommended putting turf at the stadium as a more stable playing surface that would be less susceptible to wear and tear and more conducive to providing equal access to quality turf for teams of all levels and genders.

School board member Maureen Claffey commented in a phone interview that she thought the report was a healthy selfevaluation. “I think it’s a good first step as far as gender equity in Carpinteria schools goes,” she said. “I’d like the report to be the first part in making sure that gender specific needs are addressed.” She also said that athletics should not be the only area where Title IX compliance is explored, for the sake of both boys and girls.

The self-examination process began when CHS Principal Gerardo Cornejo and then CUSD Title IX officer Barnaby Gloger attended a seminar on the topic in Ventura in 2015. A complaint had been levied against Santa Paula High School charging that the school provided gender disparate locker room conditions that favored the boys. Dr. Donna A. Lopiano, the nation’s leading expert on the issue, presented and opened the eyes of many administrators in the region to the scope and sophistication required to achieve Title IX compliance.

Following the meeting, the school district hired Lopiano’s firm, Sports Management Services, to conduct the evaluation of gender equality in CHS sports.

Lopiano spent several days on campus and gathered troves of information to conduct the probe.

“We’re really kind of ahead of the curve,” CHS Athletics Director Pat Cooney said. “Much of the time schools don’t act until there is a complaint filed.”

Cooney, along with Van Latham, Cornejo, Pettine, Vice Principal Ray Vazquez and

parent Kathleen Gordon comprise the Title IX Committee.

Enforcement of Title IX, which applies to all areas of education but is most often focused on leveling the playing field in sports, is complaint driven and the legal costs can be in the millions when schools land in court. Watchdog groups guide student-athletes through the complaint process in order to get schools to comply and cover legal fees of both sides. If a school is out of compliance, the institution risks losing federal funding.

Additional findings in the CHS report describe many differences in athletic facilities that need changes to guarantee equal access and treatment among both male and female student-athletes.

One of the report’s key findings was that the baseball diamond has better amenities than the softball diamond.

To CHS’ credit, it had already been in the process of installing dugouts on the softball diamond before the assessment.

In order to be brought into compliance, the softball diamond needs dugouts, bullpens, batting cages, a permanent PA system, windscreens and fencing around the outfield, all of which the boys’ baseball diamond has, but CHS has already taken measures to address most of those differences.

The weight room was another blight on the school’s assessment. As a muchtrafficked space for strength and conditioning for all students, the weight room was originally created by walling off a portion of the boys’ locker room and has built-in issues that could potentially deter female student-athletes from using it.

Girls only have access to it from an exterior entrance, while boys freely pass from their locker room into the weight room.

Also, the wall separating the weight room from the locker room is not solid above 10 feet so sound travels freely from the boys’ locker room into the weight room. Equipment was described as geared toward powerlifting and male athletes.

Adding a new weight room and softball batting cages have been proposed as campus upgrades through Measure U grant funding. The proposal is to install a separate fitness room behind the gymnasium that’s doubled in size and equitable in accessibility.

In presenting to the school board on May 23, the Title IX committee proposed adding a stunt team to spring sports as a way to comply with the measure of participation. The latest figures, according to Cooney, showed that in order to close the gap without eliminating opportunities for boys, 33 girl sports participation opportunities must be added.

CHS already has 34 girls participating in cheerleading, a physically challenging extracurricular that doesn’t qualify as a sport. Stunt, which includes many cheerleading elements and has competitions sanctioned by CIF, would be the most logical way to turn already robust interest in cheerleading into a way to comply with Title IX, the committee reasoned.

Claffey commented at the school board meeting that through student surveying it should be ascertained whether stunt is the preferred sport to add. She thought rugby and lacrosse could be worthy alternatives and that team-oriented sports might address needs specific to adolescent girls more effectively than stunt.

An additional area where CHS can work to create gender equity is in coaches’ gender, experience and pay, the report found. While nothing in the overall findings was scathing, it appears the school has work to do in the way it tracks each of the areas evaluated to ensure that decisions are made through the filter of Title IX compliance.

“Wonder Woman”

Some dude in Austin, Texas recently sent an email to the mayor of Austin complaining about a women-only screening of “Wonder Woman.” This dude said all this Neanderthal stuff about women not being as good at doing things as men are, or some nonsense like that.

The mayor (thankfully) tore him a new one. It’s all very hilarious.

My Facebook feed hasn’t told me yet what I am supposed to think about the politics in “Wonder Woman”— seemed to me like a mixed bag (empowerment, yah!, objectification, boo!)—so I’ll steer clear of all that. But what I am sure of is that Wonder Woman—or Diana (Gal Gadot), as she’s called—is much better at doing things than I am.

She lives on this island with a bunch of other Amazonian women—all women— who are also better at doing things than any of us. They are faster and stronger than us, know over a hundred languages, and are also just more advanced and civilized than any group of people I’ve ever met.

Zeus gave them this isolated island as a gift, allegedly, and, whether or not that’s gods’ honest truth, they sure are putting the gift to good use.

But then a man comes in a plane.

It’s Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), a spy for British Intelligence. After Diana saves him from his smoldering wreck of a plane, he relates—more like confesses—to her that there is a war going on out there (World War I, to be precise).

This comes as a surprise to everyone on the island, because they all assumed that Zeus killed Ares, the god of war, and that, thus, there was no more war.

So the way Diana see it, she has to go to the Western Front, find Ares—that’s right, find Ares, god of war—and finish what Zeus started. Trevor is a little perplexed, naturally, but he is happy to go along with the story, because that means he gets to go back home— with Wonder Woman no less.

Then there’s Wonder Woman in London, trying to fit in, buying clothes at a fancy boutique, but still tripping over the culture shock left and right.

What a riot.

At any rate, Diana is less than enthusiastic about traipsing around London when she’s supposed to be ending the War to End All Wars. Luckily, she is a persuasive woman. She convinces Trevor to take her to the front. Trevor has independent motivation, anyway, because he has unearthed a plot by one General Ludendorff (Danny Huston) and one Dr. Maru (Elena Anaya) of the German army to release a terrible poison on both military and civilian

targets, a deed which promises to kill millions.

So off to battle they go. Diana’s approach to everything is mythical and otherworldly. She can’t help but see every event as a struggle between Good and Evil, and, in particular, herself and Ares. She thinks humans are mere victims—entranced by Ares for the moment, but otherwise good, peaceful and innocent by nature.

Trevor has a more practical—realistic, you might say—approach to things. Not only does he think war is more complicated than a mano-a-mano brawl, he also realizes that humans are not mere victims—they are, in fact, part of the problem.

For a superhero movie, this is a nice bit of complexity. There is an idea that there are forces of good and evil greater than us, and a contrasting idea that, nope, we just did this to ourselves.

“Wonder Woman” does a nice job of not just raising these competing ideas, but also of weaving them together and resolving their apparent conflict.

But, let’s be real, this movie has one mission: To entertain. And boy does it.

“Wonder Woman” is thoroughly enjoyable at every turn. Two of the main contributors to this enjoyment are Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. They nail it. They are engaging, and compelling, and funny (and good looking, of course).

But this movie also has a lot of other flavors, too. It of course has all the bold flavors of a superhero saga. And yet these spices are less overpowering than in less-subtle fare. This movie also has the gritty-yet-zesty zing of fast-paced, very well-choreographed violence— kind of like “300.” And, sure, it also has some rather cheesy moments, as well as some cornball, “Indiana Jones”-esque notes that aren’t my taste. But overall, these flavors balanced nicely. This movie is sometimes funny (thanks mostly to Chris Pine), sometimes sad, often exhilarating, and always entertaining.

Whether or not this is fine dining, I think you’ll find that “Wonder Woman” goes down plenty easy.

“Wonder Woman” is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, and some suggestive content.

I was born right around the time that water-resistant sunscreens entered the market, which turned out to be fortunate for my fair skin. According to my family, even when I was a baby they couldn’t keep me out of the water, and the older I got the more I wanted to spend every moment of summer in the water. I spent so much time in the water that my swimsuits didn’t last more than a couple of months, which in Vermont is about the length of the summer season. I’m not exactly sure if it was my mother who instilled the diligent habit of reapplying sunscreen constantly to prevent sunburns or not, but I have become a sunscreen aficionado—hours of research and test patches on my sensitive skin, seeing which ones stay on best and how environmentally safe each one is.

I once spent a perfect weekend in June with my mother on the beach in Maine—perfect except for the sunscreen I purchased failing miserably, leaving me with the most painful sunburn I had ever had. The ride home in the car was miserable, and putting on a starchy shirt for work was agony for several days after returning home. That particular brand was discontinued shortly after that, but there is a large market for various types of sunscreen and sunblock that continues to grow.

While protecting your skin is important, research is finding that not all sun-protecting elements are good for the environment. Many sunscreens have tiny particles of metals called nanomaterials (which are really, incredibly small, much smaller that the human eye can detect).

These microscopic bits of metal have been found to alter development of marine life at the cellular level, which can make them more vulnerability to other threats.

Now, like many things, science is still figuring out the true impact of sunscreen on marine life. But sunscreen makers are responding to research and consumer demand by providing safer products, many that actually protect your skin better.

I have written before about greenwashing––the practice of placing unregulated statements about a product on the label that can be misleading. Once of the most common sunscreen claims I see is “reef safe,” a response to some research showing that oxybenzone can alter the DNA in coral. The problem is that there is no regulation for “reef safe” labeling so anyone can place it on their label.

But why does it matter if a little bit of your sunscreen ends up in the ocean?

The Carpinteria State Beach estimates that more than 1 million people visit the park and beach annually. The population of Carpinteria is around 14,000, and even

without estimating the number of people who stay in vacation homes and hotels, or who visit the beach from the surrounding area regularly, you can guess how each little bit can add up to enough to possibly have an impact on the local marine life.

Because my skin is fussy, over the years I have become a loyal consumer of specific brands. They turn me pale white, but they stay on and prevent a repeat of the painful bright red burn I had in my early 20s. As I said, our market is responding to the demand for sun protection that does not harm the environment, and many of the brands you can find everywhere now have options for the environmentally minded consumer. Zinc oxide is still the best option for protecting your skin, and it also happens to be one that is high on the list of those recommended as safe for the environment.

I know that many people are loyal consumers of particular brands, and also love convenience. A couple of things to consider when it comes to sun protection are not only the type of sunscreen you use, but how you use it. A lot of people put on too much or don’t put it on long enough before going out in the sun or in the water, which means it is more likely to rinse off. Both of these are easy steps, and have the added benefit of making your sunscreen last longer and maybe saving you money in the long run.

Arts Center secures $24K grant

The Hutton Parker Foundation has awarded $24,000 to the Carpinteria Arts Center to help sustain program offerings while the nonprofit raises funds to secure the purchase and renovation of the building at 865 Linden Ave. “We are grateful to have the support of the Hutton Parker Foundation, one of the most generous, professional, and engaged grant makers in the county,” said David Powdrell, co-chair of the Arts Center’s board of directors. “We are thrilled that they have evaluated our organization and have chosen to support the work we are doing to bring the arts to people of all ages, all backgrounds, and all segments of our community.”

The Carpinteria Arts Center provides dozens of programs for adults and children, including workshops, tours of museums, galleries, and private collections, live music, films and more. CAC also supports local artists with an annual studio tour, artists’ marketplace, gallery exhibitions, and teaching opportunities.

“Currently in our gallery is a remarkable show of photography from regional artists, and last month we kicked off our series of free summer concerts,” said Carpinteria Art Center Executive Director Rebecca Stebbins. “We look forward to welcoming our summer campers and teen mural artists this month, and we invite everyone to learn more about the many opportunities on offer. Support like this from Hutton Parker enables CAC to provide so much.”

The Hutton Parker Foundation offers sustainability to community-based nonprofit organizations, and assists agencies in achieving their highest level of performance and delivery of services for stronger, more efficient communities for all.

Connecting and reflecting at the Arts Center

Ribbons made of old sails are being inscribed with hopes, wishes and dreams and affixed to sailing rope, used CDs and discarded materials in an outdoor installation in the Carpinteria Arts Center courtyard. “Our summer art installation welcomes visitors to the Arts Center and invites all to add to the installation by creating a ribbon,” said volunteer Janey Cohen.

The concept of the installation is to create a “walkway of inspiration” as ribbons are added throughout the summer. “All visitors to the Carpinteria Arts Center are invited and encouraged to add their hopes, wishes or dreams to the installation,” Cohen said. Regrets may be written on reflective metal pieces “to offer balance,” she suggested.

The installation opened June 4 at the CAC at a special Members Party, and the hopes, wishes and dreams created by children and adults alike are already accumulating. A free Family Craft Event will be held on Saturday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to noon to make Wishing Webs in the Art Center’s courtyard at 855 Linden Ave., and participants will be able to add wish ribbons to the installation as well.

From the littlest kindergartner to the graduating fifthgraders, every student at Summerland School played a role in last weekend’s production of “The Jungle Book.”

Chaired by Marit ter Mate-Martinsen and directed by Laezer Schlomkowitz, the show was based on the classic novel by Rudyard Kipling and the classic animated film by Disney. Performances took place at Carpinteria Children’s Project on June 2 and 3, and featured elaborate costumes, several musical numbers and a set that made audience members feel like they were deep in the jungle.

Morning Rotary learns about “Truth, lies and art”

Carpinteria Arts Center representatives David Powdrell and Rebecca Stebbins stopped by the Carpinteria Morning Rotary Club meeting of May 30 to talk about “Truth, Lies, Alternative Facts, and Art.” Stebbins, the nonprofit’s executive director and an accomplished artist, reminded the Rotarians that participating in art improves children’s math and language arts skills, helps them develop higher cognitive functions and also brings joy. Stebbins quoted famous statesman Winston Churchill as saying, “The arts are essential to any complete national life. Warrior tennis lands All-League honors

The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team received a great deal of recognition from the Tri-Valley League honor roll that was recently announced. Besides tying for the league championship with Foothill Tech, Warriors coach Charles Bryant was also named Coach of the Year. Making First Team All-League was Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson; his brother Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson also earned Second Team honors for his doubles accomplishments.

Another Warrior senior Jacob Ascencio also made the Second Team for his singles play. Junior Jeremy Saito was also named on the First Team, along with senior Sam Truax who was also honored for his prowess in doubles. Sophomore Juan Carlos Zapata also made the Second Team for his doubles play. Sophomore Myles Morgan earned Honorable Mention honors for his singles efforts. Freshmen Cameron Gralewski and Esteban Zapata also collected Honorable status. Honors went to several underclassmen, which bodes well for the team’s success next year.

What’s new at the harbor seal rookery?

The following counts taken from May 22-31 were compiled from Carpinteria Seal Watch volunteer reports. Carpinteria harbor seal beach closure runs from Dec. 1 to June 1 each year. Seal Watch volunteers are still welcome to sign up by calling 684-2247.

Between May 22 and May 31, 1,664 people came to view the seals, including visitors from Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Canada, Hungary, China, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Washington, Oregon, Minnesota, Kansas, New Mexico, Ohio, Texas, New York, Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Connecticut, Colorado, South Dakota, Utah and Washington D.C.

Disturbances

The seals were frightened by pier activity four times, by beach walkers three times, and by a helicopter.

Natural History Notes

Harbor seals do not migrate. Although the city beach closure is for six months, the seals are protected year round by the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act. Carpinterians are fortunate to live in one of only two places on the Southern California coast where the public can view harbor seals resting and caring for pups. Point Mugu and Point Conception are closed to the public, and Ellwood may be abandoned.

The Carpinteria harbor seal rookery is located immediately east of Casitas Pier, between the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and Carpinteria State Beach. Please remember not to bring dogs, bicycles or loud voices to view the seals. Harbor seals, when disturbed, may flee and become separated from their pups. Fathers and sons

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY

As a personal historian i’ve learned that legacies come in all shapes and sizes, but none are more important than the values and traditions passed between fathers and sons.

Shawn Noormand is the proud father of two teenaged sons and a new baby daughter, but most of us know him as the ever-affable owner of Carpinteria’s Giovanni’s Restaurant, where the best pizza in town can be found. he came to the restaurant business through his father, who moved his family from Chatsworth to the Santa barbara area in 1986 to partner with a friend who owned the original Giovanni’s in isla Vista and wanted to expand. “my dad had been in the restaurant business pretty much his whole life and owned a chili restaurant down in Studio City. i remember when i was a kid i’d go with him to work and scoop coleslaw into the bowls for the orders for the day. he also owned a seafood restaurant for a while. my dad is 100-percent persian— my great grandparents changed the family name to Noormand when they went to France before coming to the united States. Noormand is a French name, but Noor means “light” in Farsi. i don’t know why they changed it, but i don’t think i could even pronounce the original name. “i started working in the isla Vista restaurant in the summer of ’87 when i was about 16. my dad and his partner then started the montecito Giovanni’s, and in 1988 they opened the one here in Carpinteria, which they franchised six or eight months later to my grandmother and uncle. they also franchised the isla Vista Giovanni’s to another gentleman, and my dad continues to run the one in montecito.

At that time i was making $3.35 an hour, which was minimum wage, and i learned what it takes to actually earn that money. i started at the bottom and worked as dishwasher and bussing tables, but i also made pizzas. i did everything, and it made me respect all the work my dad put in to build and create that business. “i learned my work ethic from working with my dad. i worked for him from probably ’87 to ’95 while i was in school and in college. At SbCC i took business classes and learned accounting and restaurant management. After that i helped my uncle and my sister with their businesses, then my grandma told me she was going to retire and wanted me to take over the Carpinteria location. i was 25 and just a kid, but i worked hard and every dollar i made was used to pay off the business loan. i paid it off in three years.”

When Shawn became a father himself in 2000, he relied on the great crew he had established to help maintain the business

so he could cut back on his hours and spend time with his sons, coaching t-ball and playing sports. Now, both sons are excelling at Santa barbara high School and help their dad at the restaurant. “they love coming in and helping, and i hope to pass on to them the work ethic i learned from my dad. to comprehend that you have to work to get something out of life, and it won’t happen overnight. i also want them to learn how to talk to people, because in life you have to know that. You have to ask questions, you have to listen, you have to chit-chat and smile. they get to meet all kinds of new people every day, and learn how to take care of them. they see how hard that is, and they see we’re not just sitting around on our ipads all day playing games. We actually have to clean and cook and prepare and make a nice place for people to come. it develops in them a respect for me and for the other people i work with, and when they go to other restaurants, they respect the people working there as well.

Belching Beaver Horchata

on may 19 at approximately 1:40 p.m. a deputy was on vehicle patrol in the parking lot of a coffee shop on Casitas pass Road. he parked his vehicle and noticed two women sitting in another parked car, where one of them was drinking from a beer bottle. upon contacting the women, one of them handed the deputy the bottle of “belching beaver horchata” beer from which she had been drinking. the deputy asked the women for their ids, and a records check revealed two warrants for one of them. the deputy then searched the vehicle and found a glass pipe with burnt residue of suspected methamphetamine. in the back seat of the vehicle he found a small amount of suspected heroin. there was foil with burnt residue as well. the two women were arrested for the drugs and the warrants and transported to Santa barbara County Jail. two dogs in the vehicle were taken by animal control, and the vehicle was left parked where it was.

On the nod

on may 29 at approximately 4:30 p.m. a 30-year-old woman pulled into a gas

station on Carpinteria Avenue, and the owner of the station called the Sheriff’s Office after observing a piece of burnt foil in the car, and the woman seeming to be “on the nod” (under the influence of heroin). According to the owner of the gas station, the woman appeared to be falling asleep and the owner asked her to move her vehicle so that other customers could get by. When she attempted to back into a parking spot she nearly hit another car, and once she got her car into a parking space the owner of the station reached in, put her vehicle in park and took the keys.

He then called the Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy responded and reported that the woman’s pupils were “constricted/ pinpoint” and that she “appeared to be on the nod.” She had a bruised injection site on the inside of her right bicep, and a scabbed-over sore about the size of a

dime on her left check and left side of her neck that she was picking at. A search of the woman’s vehicle revealed heroin in a baggie, two baggies of meth, a pen with heroin residue and burnt foil. the reporting deputy noted that the woman said she was planning to check-in to a rehab facility the next day but she wanted to get high one last time. the woman was arrested, her vehicle towed, and she was transported to Santa barbara County Jail.

A friend of a friend

on may 31 at approximately 7:40 p.m. two deputies responded to a supermarket on Casitas pass Road because a woman had been transported to the hospital for an unknown medical condition and her vehicle was left in the parking lot unsecured. When the deputies arrived on

scene paramedics pointed to a woman walking away from the vehicle, whom they described as “suspicious.” paramedics also said she had been with a man when they responded to the medical call.

A deputy then spoke with the 43-yearold woman, who said her companion may have been hiding in the bathroom of the supermarket. deputies were unable to locate any other people connected to the incident, but based on the nature of the medical call and the woman’s odd behavior (according to the deputy’s report), the deputy requested a records check from the Sheriff’s Office dispatch. There were five outstanding warrants from Ventura County for the woman. the deputy arrested her and transported her to Santa barbara County Jail.

Technically the new school maintained the name Union Grammar and High School, but the community called it the Main School. Dr. Jim Campos, who was the principal at Main when it closed in 2007, wrote about its history in the Carpinteria Valley Historical Society’s newsletter, “The Grapevine,” that year. Campos stated that the name Main School did not become official until the late 1960s.

Lescher Dowling, who attended the tent school and then the new Main School, recounted the transition in his contribution to the “The Grapevine.” “Moving into this new school was quite an adventure, with the smells of fresh paint, the strange odors of floor tile and wonder of wonders, water fountains in the hallway,” he stated.

On the rOad schOOl nOtes CVN arrives in Allentown

Not Billy Joel’s Allentown—this one is in New Jersey. The land that is now Allentown and the surrounding area was originally populated by the Lenape Family of the Deleware Tribe of Native Americans.

The present town was founded in 1706 and continues to this day to be one of the historic towns of New Jersey.

Wes Franken was in town, traveling back to his Alma Mater Delaware Valley University for its annual county fair. Franken visited family in the East, and while most people know of Allentown, Penn., New Jersey’s Allentown is almost 60 years older.

Students crunch numbers at Math Superbowl

Young mathematicians from Canalino, Aliso and Summerland schools participated in the 35th annual Math Superbowl on May 31, competing with participating schools from Southern Santa Barbara County at the Earl Warren Showgrounds. Each school selected the top-four math students from grades four, five and six as representatives and paid a $100 entry fee. Paper and pencils were provided, but each team supplied its own hand-held calculators. in the hands-on project, students built paper towers using three sheets of cardstock paper, a paperclip and masking tape to construct the tallest free-standing structure.

Out of 29 participating schools, Aliso fifth-graders took sixth place with a 5-foot 6-inch structure, and Summerland fourth-graders took third place with a 5-foot 2-inch structure.

“The Math Superbowl is an outstanding program, and i salute all those who work so hard each year to make it happen,” said Santa Barbara County Superintendent of Schools Bill Cirone. “Math is essential to every part of learning and life. Anything that helps children get involved, get excited, and get proficient is worth all our support.”

Brantingham earns doctorate

Steven Thomas Brantingham graduated with a doctorate from MidWestern University on June 2. Graduation took place at MidWestern’s Glendale, Ariz. campus.

Steven is the son of Carpinterians Chuck and Pam Brantingham. he and his wife, Lisa, will be moving to Dixon, Ill. for a residency in ankle and foot surgery.

Soriano makes the team

Cate School alumna Sophia Soriano, now a junior at Connecticut College, has been named to the 2017 NESCAC Spring All-Academic Team by the New England Small College Athletic Conference. A member of Connecticut College’s Women’s Water Polo team, Soriano is one of 57 Connecticut College student athletes selected by the conference. To be honored, an individual must have reached sophomore academic standing and be a varsity letter winner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.40.

Founded in 1911, Connecticut College is a private liberal college overlooking Long island Sound and the Thames River.

I run a school. Growing up is my business. And yet, I am conflicted.

The people that I love and respect most in this world are the ones whose adulthood has not somehow replaced their childhood, whose lives are as rich in personal interest and initiative as they are in professional accomplishment, and perhaps most importantly who find value in life and living things well beyond their own existence.

As we agreed when I began this talk, we acknowledge a milestone today. But maybe we need to see what’s next not as a linear path but a series of concentric circles or parabola, that take us both forward and backward, that remind us of the things that fill us up, and encourage us to take them with us—not just people and memories, but interests, affections, pastimes and hobbies.

My father is my hero because it has always been clear to me what he loves. And in that loving—even in loving moths—he reveals something generous and playful not simply about the man he has always been—at least as long as I’ve been around—but the kid he remains. I hope and trust not only that you have such people in each of your lives but that you become such models for the many who will surely look to you. Already your peers and those you have mentored this year are watching. A great many more will do the same in the coming years. What will they see in you? Will they know what you love or why?

With all due respect to our present ceremony, maybe the milestones that truly matter are the ones that reveal us in the maelstrom as distinct, different and worthy of note and memory. Like a night at the light when my father and I sat down together to enjoy the company of this world and its winged inhabitants. If I wish you anything beyond this Mesa, it is that you know such moments.
