The Carpinteria Seal Fountain was transformed into a sudsy bubble machine on the afternoon of June 20 after water began running for the first time in a long, dry while. From left to right, Bali Gutierrez, Brook Barnett and Hara Gutierrez were treated to a shower of foam to beat the summer heat. Kids of all ages were running through the thick wall of suds, which doubled in size as the day went on and overflowed onto the sidewalk. Summer fun comes at a price however, and the addition of suds by unknown mischief-makers ultimately required a city cleanup. Check inside this issue for other summer fun opportunities that won’t interfere with city plumbing.

BRIEFLY Albertsons transfers well-loved manager

Ahmed Jahadhmy, longtime director of Carpinteria’s Albertsons store, was abruptly transferred to a Goleta store this week.

An Albertsons employee told Coastal View News that Jahadhmy, who had managed the store for over a decade, was informed of the move on June 19 and began working in Goleta on June 20. Jahadhmy lives in Carpinteria and worked closely with the city and the community to bring about the store’s major expansion in 2012. The employee, who wished to remain anonymous, said that Jahadhmy was a great manager who cared about the community and his staff.

Artesania wins $8K grant

Carpinteria Library’s free monthly arts and crafts program was honored as the recipient of an $8,000 grant by the Fund for Santa Barbara during a reception at the Lobero Theater patio on June 13. The program, Artesania para la Familia, received one of only 18 grants awarded countywide by the Fund and was the only one awarded to a Carpinteria program. Speakers at the ceremony included Suzanne Requejo, who ran the popular arts and crafts program for the last several years, along with recent Carpinteria High School graduate Maria Zamora. Zamora attended the library’s Homework Center and Artesania when she was younger and now works as a page at the library. She will be attending University of San Francisco in the fall with a full scholarship to study international relations.

Community gears up for Relay For Life

With many months of preparation behind them, organizers of Carpinteria’s 10th annual Relay For Life are heading into the final stretch. The free community event that serves as an American Cancer Society fundraiser begins on Saturday, July 15 at 10 a.m. at Aliso School, 4545 Carpinteria Ave. Organizers chose a Disney theme this year and have scheduled performances by local bands, a kids camp with a jolly jumper, food, raffles and games throughout the 24-hour event. Bluffs III awarded $144K CREF grant

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a $144,750 Coastal Resource Enhancement Fund (CREF) grant to the City of Carpinteria towards the acquisition of the Carpinteria Bluffs III property on June 20. The grant brings Bluffs III fundraising very close to its $7.9 million goal to acquire and restore the 21-acre bluff top property at the east end of Carpinteria Ave. A collaboration of the city, the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County and the Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs is behind the effort, which was first announced one year ago this week. Before the Land Trust obtained an option to purchase the property, it was threatened by the development of a resort hotel complex. Since that time, more than 1,300 community members have contributed towards this rare opportunity—to acquire the Carpinteria Bluffs III property for habitat protection and restoration and low impact recreational use.

After 10 years keeping the pool and the Pacific safe for local kids, City of Carpinteria Aquatics Program Coordinator Morgan Youngs is shifting his focus to safety on land. Youngs worked his last day for the city on June 16 in order to launch a career in firefighting. He will join the Santa Barbara County hand crew this summer and plans to enroll in the Oxnard Fire Academy next spring.

Youngs was first hired by the city as a senior at Carpinteria High School. He worked as a pool lifeguard starting in April 2007, then became an instructor for the Junior Lifeguard program. He earned a business degree from Grand Canyon University in Arizona and then became the city’s fulltime aquatics program coordinator. “(Youngs) did a wonderful job. I have admired his efforts. He helped so many youth improve their water skills, I am proud to have worked KARLSSON FILE PHOTO with him,” said Parks and Recreation Director Morgan Youngs left the City of Matt Roberts.

Sick sea lion found up a creek

The Santa Monica Creek channel hosted an unlikely visitor midday on Monday, June 19. A female sea lion was reported to Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute while it lingered near Via Real in the dry concrete channel several hundred yards from its connection with the salt marsh. CIMWI sent out volunteers to address the situation.

The 200-pound animal was believed to be suffering from domoic acid poisoning, a condition that can leave marine mammals disoriented and cause them to stray from the ocean. Though likely sick from eating fish with high concentrations of the neurotoxin that is present in the ocean during algal blooms, the sea lion appeared robust and exhibited a high level of energy while wandering up and down the drainage channel.

At one point, the sea lion turned away from the coast and swiftly approached the small group of people in the channel, vocalizing loudly and aggressively.

CIMWI volunteers Sam Macks and Laura Ingulsrud were compelled to set up shield-like “herding boards” to block the animal from moving farther inland.

The rescue effort was led by Macks, who manages stranding operations for Santa Barbara County, and involved coordination by the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District and the City of Carpinteria’s Public Works Department.

her way toward the salt marsh. Volunteers decided to avoid further stressing the animal by allowing her to return to the marsh without interference. The sea lion’s condition is expected to improve, and volunteers anticipate the animal will return to full health without additional aid.

Carpinteria Beautiful honors Markolf

Foster Markolf, who joined Carpinteria Beautiful in 2004 and has served two terms as its president, was honored recently with the Volunteer of the Year award for being what President Deana Rae McMillion described as “the perfect embodiment of a community volunteer.” He has been involved in almost every aspect of the organization’s projects and programs, and not only inspired a number of projects but also led them from start to finish.

McMillion said that without Markolf’s leadership, skill and determination, Carpinteria Beautiful projects such as the World’s Safest Beach mural on Wullbrandt Way, the Whitney Abbott mural on the Kilovac Building and the porcelain enamel City Seal, gifted to the city on its 50th anniversary, would not have happened.

Markolf organized personnel, dealt with property owners, wrote up legal agreements, oversaw city review and permitting, researched and ordered materials and generally saw to every detail. Markolf also led the effort to have the city implement a Second Hand Smoking Ordinance, which was passed by the City Council in 2011 and resulted in a huge drop in both litter and unhealthy second-hand smoke. For this he was awarded a special commendation from the Board of Supervisors.

School board runs aground

For over 20 years, I have put my heart and soul into my job as the office coordinator for Rincon and Foothill high schools. I was so very proud, just two weeks ago, to be on the cover of the CVN with our graduating seniors.

After two decades of positive performance reviews, I should feel secure in my position and respected by my employer, but I don’t. Last January, our school board incumbents (Sheaffer, Fabre and Robertson) decided to reduce my hours.

They made and announced this decision without even consulting the principal or any other staff who could describe the impact. Along with reducing my hours, the board voted to eliminate one of three teachers at Rincon/Foothill.

Worried about how this would affect our small school, I asked the employee union (CAUSE) to examine the decision.

It did not take long to discover that the board and the acting superintendent neglected their responsibilities by failing to complete the contractual “meet & consult” process. They even claimed they had consulted with staff and union leadership, when they hadn’t. The union has filed a grievance, and now the school board’s hasty and deceptive actions aimed to save money will once again cost the district in legal fees.

Although I’m disappointed for what a reduction of hours means to my finances, healthcare and employment status, I am most concerned about what these decisions mean to the students.

Student safety will be jeopardized due to less supervision on campus and less communication with parents. There will be less one-on-one assistance with one less teacher. Other CUSD employees will have to be identified and trained to complete the duties that are still required but no longer doable with a reduction to my hours.

Why change something that has worked successfully for 20 years? These are the students that need more assistance. These reductions will make our schools suffer and eventually the community too.

A closer look at Venoco’s generosity

In the end, Venoco’s “generosity” amounted to writing checks that could ultimately be covered by the taxpayers of California.

That is a “generosity” we can all do without.

Last week’s letter “Appreciation for Venoco” lauded the company for how they have run their operations in Carpinteria, saying to Venoco, “The moneys you have provided to Carpinteria, Santa Barbara County and the state of California are certainly appreciated and have done nothing but great things for great people.”

The donations to local causes, plus taxes and royalties have indeed been beneficial. But at what cost?

Venoco is now bankrupt. Because of that fact, just few miles up the coast, offshore of Goleta, Platform Holly will now be decommissioned. The platform will be removed and its 30 ocean floor oil wells will be plugged. According to the California State Lands Commission, the oil well plugging will cost between $63 million and $74 million over a two-year work period. Removing the platform is estimated to cost over $44 million.

Fortunately, Venoco was previously required to post a bond to cover the cost of this decommissioning. The value of the bond? $22 million.

That’s right—Venoco’s bond is at least $85 million short of covering the cost of decommissioning Platform Holly.

Where will this additional money come from? The State Lands Commission will try to recover as much as they can from Venoco. But remember Venoco is bankrupt—more debt than assets—so they don’t have enough money to pay everyone they owe, including the cost of decommissioning.

Who is left to pay the cost? All of us.

California taxpayers will ultimately be left paying any balance remaining on Venoco’s bill. Their “generous” contributions to our local community and their tax and royalty payments were not free. Now

Venoco’s costly exit

Since the 1960’s the energy companies and the U.S. government have known that greenhouse gas emissions would lead to “apocalyptic and catastrophic” climate change and government agencies and the fossil fuel industry colluded with each other to suppress such warnings. A Supreme Court case is pending called Kelsey Cascadia Rose Juliana et al. v. U.S. of America et al., which is a lawsuit alleging that the government fails to meaningfully address climate change and thus violates young people’s constitutional rights to due process and “life, liberty and property.”

The lawsuit pits 21 young people against the U.S. Government and Big Oil, claiming that inaction on climate change represents an intergenerational injustice or simply put, that climate change will harm young people more than anyone else. This incredibly significant lawsuit is considered by many to be the most important of this century.

Venoco is well aware of this lawsuit and is also well aware of how much they contributed to “apocalyptic and catastrophic” climate change. Now that they are bankrupt, they are going to leave us to clean up after them and leave us the bill. Venoco simply does not have enough money to dismantle their oil rigs and clean up their property.

Carpinteria Library needs you

Here are a few ideas of how we can support our terrific library in need: 1. Become a Friend of the Library if you are not already. Not only is it a tax write off and a great way to support our town, there is an annual dinner for members that is a lively event featuring a guest speaker and an opportunity to meet neighbors and fellow readers.

2. Get one friend or family member, stranger or even a tourist visiting the bookstore to become a Friend of the Library. (Hello volunteers!)

3. When you shop at the Friends of the Library bookstore, tell them to “keep the change” and add a little to the piggybank.

4. Ask the SB County Sheriff’s Department to share some of the almost $4 million they receive from the Carpinteria City budget. Our library share? A mere $50,000 from the city coffers. The library houses the homeless and held computer and after school homework and art classes that kept kids off the streets and from becoming gang members (before two fantastic, decade-long employees, Suzanne Requejo and Allison Turkish, were rudely fired by Santa Barbara Central branch).

The heartbeat of our town provides services that help the Sheriff’s Department.

How about a fundraiser in conjunction with those who protect and serve us?

Before returning to Children’s Hospital for another surgery due to a kidney condition, Forrest Holt will celebrate his fourth birthday on Sunday, June 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club, 1059 Vallecito Road. Middle school girls to attend summer science and math camp

More than 25 years ago the American Association of University Women established California-wide science and math camps for young women going into eighth grade, with scholarships provided by local association branches. This year 28 girls, with Carpinteria Middle Schoolers among them, will spend a week of summer at UCSB participating in Tech Trek, a science and math camp. To be selected students must be recommended by a science or math teacher, write an essay and participate in an interview with members of AAUW. The camp will include hands-on learning activities such as building robots, exploring sea life and competing to build the strongest structures. The girls will also learn about careers in technology and science.

• Crews will continue forming and pouring concrete, above-ground supports (abutments) and walls for the Via real and Highway 101 bridges over Carpinteria Creek. Piles will also be driven for underground side supports, and footing areas for the bridges will be excavated.

• A temporary stream diversion will be installed in Carpinteria Creek to allow for bridge construction and grading for new bridges.

• Drainage improvements continue.

Carpinteria Creek Bike Path

The Carpinteria Creek bike path will remain closed for up to seven months for bridge work at Via real and Highway 101. There is a free Easylift shuttle during the closure that runs between San roque Mobile Estates and Rancho Granada Mobile Home Park (on Via real) and Carpinteria Avenue (at Eugenia Place, Palm Avenue, Albertsons and City Hall) between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 and 5:30 p.m. every half hour. The shuttle is

wheelchair accessible and accommodates two bikes. The shuttle schedule will add a stop at Rancho Granada Mobile Home Park starting June 26 along with extended hours. There will be on-site shuttle signs with more schedule information.

Highway 101

• Sound wall work will begin along southbound Highway 101 with vegetation clearing and temporary fencing.

• Drainage improvements are ongoing in the median, shoulder areas, and along Casitas Pass road near the construction yard.

Upcoming Work: July Casitas Pass Road

The southbound Highway 101 onramp at Casitas Pass will close for up to 2 weeks for ramp and shoulder improvements.

Linden Avenue

The sidewalk at the corner of linden Avenue and ogan road will be closed for retaining wall work. Pedestrians can use the temporary sidewalk detour on Pacific Village Drive connecting to Linden Avenue.

Highway 101

Crews will repair damaged concrete panels on Highway 101 northbound and southbound lanes and ramps at night.

The existing panels are degraded due to weather. north of linden Avenue, behind nipomo Drive, there will be sewer realignment work to prepare for the new sound wall.

Sharon Mae Mintzer 12/17/1952 - 6/7/2017

Sharon Mae Mintzer, 64, of Carpinteria, Calif., passed away peacefully at Serenity House in Santa Barbara on the morning of Wednesday, June 7, 2017 following a 12-year battle with Huntington’s Chorea.

The days before her passing were filled with love as Sharon was with her close family and friends.

Sharon was born on Dec. 17, 1952 in Howell, Mich. to William and Mildred Schneider. She graduated from Webberville High School and attended Michigan State University briefly. Sharon was an adventurous soul and began a life of travel that led her across the country and abroad. She met many treasured friends through her journeys and eventually settled in Carpinteria, Calif. after marrying a fellow adventurer, Stan Rusk.

Sharon developed a love of cooking that led her to become a cook in the merchant marine. Many friends and family remember Sharon for her famous baked bean recipe, butter dips, homemade barbecue sauce and delicious homemade cakes that she gladly made for anyone who asked.

Sharon ventured into several careers including selling real estate and working as the Emergency Room Unit Clerk at St. Francis Hospital for many years. Sharon’s proudest and greatest joys were her two daughters, Kimberle (Rusk) DeAnda and Katie Mintzer and her two grandchildren, Sophia and Enzo DeAnda. Through her long battle with Huntington’s Chorea, Sharon showed extraordinary grace and optimism that touched all who cared for and knew her.

Sharon is survived by her children Kimberle DeAnda (Anthony DeAnda), Katie Mintzer, life-long companion Stan Rusk, two grandchildren, a brother-inlaw and two nephews. Sharon is preceded in death by her parents William and Mildred Schneider, and her sister Sue Griffes.

A celebration of Sharon’s life will be held on Sunday, June 25, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Carpinteria Lions Club.

Dora Perez 2/19/1962 – 6/17/2017

Dora Perez was taken from us on June 17, 2017, far too soon. She is survived by her son Israel Manual Perez, her siblings Ana Mobley, Gloria Brown, George Jimenez, Raul Jimenez, Javier Jimenez, Jesus “Chuy” Jimenez, Rosa Jimenez, Alicia Garcia and Estella Gomez, and many nieces and nephews—all of whom she adored.

Born Dora Luz Jimenez on Feb. 19, 1962, in Jalostotitlán, Mexico, she lived most of her life in Carpinteria, Calif. Dora was preceded in death by her husband, David Perez, and her parents, Salvador and Nicandra Jimenez.

Dora was known for her big heart, her smile and contagious laughter. In every way, she gave all that she had to bring joy to those around her. She seemed happiest surrounded by her family and extended family and took every opportunity to love, listen to, encourage and affirm each one. At family gatherings she wanted to hear what was going on in the life of each member. At these same gatherings, she loved hearing and recounting stories of family members past and present, as each one seemed as precious to her as gold.

Guided by her compassion, selflessness and love for others, Dora’s life was a unique flame that touched countless others. Although her own flame fades, it continues to burn and spread, as from one candle to countless others, burning brightly in the many lives and hearts she touched. Her family is her legacy, and with dozens of family members who have been changed by her touch, her flame is now part of a much bigger fire that will roar in future generations.

Whether large or small, every memory of Dora as a mother, sister, tia, prima or friend helps lessen the sadness of her passing and tempers each of our hearts to be stronger and more like hers.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 24 at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1532 Linden Ave., Carpinteria, CA 93013.

Bonkers for bicycles

Local bike educator and motivator wins Velo Wings Award

By Peter Dugré There’s no better thinking chair than a bicycle saddle. Carpinteria Family School fourth- and fifth-grade teacher and profuse-idea woman Lorilee Collins saddles up frequently and much of her musing focuses on how to get as many students as possible out riding bikes.

She started a Bike Club at the Canalino School campus this spring, and for over five years she’s been bringing youthcentric bicycle education programs to Carpinteria. For her efforts, Collins was awarded a Velo Wings Award last May by the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition—a special honor bestowed upon “inspirational local women” in the area of bicycle ridership promotion.

“I just think cycling is able to move things socially and politically. It gives women opportunities. It breaks down barriers,” Collins said.

She told Coastal View News about how a particular young student was empowered to learn a new skill on a new bike through the Bike Club at Canalino, which served third- through fifth-grade students with on-campus bicycle skills and safety education last spring. When the student started out, she didn’t know how to ride a bicycle. Collins saw her determination and removed the pedals to create a balance bike. One day, the student had had enough of putting her feet on the ground and requested to have the pedals reinstalled. “She just said, ‘I’m going to ride,’” Collins related. The girl hasn’t stopped since, and Collins arranged for her to get a refurbished pink bicycle. She now rides everywhere. In all, Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition made bike owners of 30 Carpinteria youth.

“Just like every kid learns to swim in third grade, they should learn to bike. It helps them be part of society,” Collins said.

Collins, a warm-hearted communicator by nature, lives for the little moments of educating and empowering one young person at a time, people she affectionately refers to as “kidlets.”

“The educational reason to work with kidlets and bikes is that they become advocates and voters and future leaders. I want them to become vehicles of building communities,” Collins said.

In her perfect world, there’d be a mountain bike club at Carpinteria Middle and high schools. rincon and Foothill high schools could use a bicycle maintenance and mechanics program that teaches students valuable hands-on skills. “As a bike mechanic, you can work anywhere. When (students) go to college, they can take part-time jobs at bike shops,” she said. Santa Barbara high School offers a bike mechanics program.

Overall, she wants to continue to bring the message to the public about the benefits of cycling rather than driving, particularly in the friendly environs of Carpinteria. She helps to organize biannual Bike to School days and encourages her students to form bike trains, whereby one-by-one they stop at each other ’s houses to build a caravan on the commute to school. Evidence of the trains can be seen by the growing bike parking outside her classroom.

Education among cyclists and drivers is the ultimate goal in promoting safe cycling. “It’s not the battle of cars versus bicycles; it’s not about who has the right of way,” she says. “We all have the right to be alive.”

Photos by Robin KaRlsson Fourteen young Carpinterians secured a safe place in the cycling community last week by participating in the Summer Cycle Camp, an SBBike program.

Described by instructor Chris Sobell as “definitely a success!” the camp taught the 9- to 14-year-olds how to choose safe routes, treat bikes as vehicles and ride safely and legally while having fun.

This summer marks the third year of the program, which is led by licensed cycling instructors certified by the League of American Bicyclists. Diana Blanchard was the lead instructor, and her assistants were Barry Remis, Diana O’Connell and Alyssa Ornelas. Also lending a hand were adults Chris Sobell and Adrian Aguilar.

Students learned how to check the condition of their bike prior to each ride, the rules of the road, the use of hand signals and the power start, how to ride in a group safely, how to safely change lanes or turn, how to be visible and predictable, how to change a flat and how to put a bike on the bus.

Jaye Depew’s home at the San Roque Mobile Home Park seems typical from the outside, but once inside visitors are met with an incredible display of over 800 keychains. depew’s quirky collection includes tiny board games, miniature cartoon characters, and even petite working cameras.

Her collection began in 1995 with a tiny keychain Colorform set that she would take to her neurologist’s office. To pass time in the waiting room, she would organize its tiny magnetic pieces into works of art on the keychain’s board. “This was the original that got me addicted,” said Depew. Depew’s Bachelor’s Degree in art and her passion for crafting an ing made the art kits great fun for her to collect. during her travels, she has collected keychains as souvenirs. The key ring depew uses only initialed disk and a tiny flashlight, but her backpack has a sentimental keychain on it: a tiny with a voice box inside. When she traveled with her sister to Paris, an elderly couple appr them and the man reached out and squeezed the tiny dog, making it bark. This led to giggli smiling among the four of them, though they spoke no words to each other. depew uses keychains as a way to treat herself when she feels down by shopping on unique additions to her collection. She uses websites like eBay to find peculiar keychains a little silver toilet, or others from around the world like her cigar keychain from Cuba. Her tion includes a few expensive items, but she typically spends less than $5 each and splurg on special keychains. For game board keychains, she often buys two of each, one to keep pa and the other to play with. She is proud of her collection and finds the tininess of the items t most playful aspect. “It’s the fun. It’s the silliness of it,” she said.

In 2009, the City of Carpinteria launched the Host Program, and prospective volunteer Barbara Smith got a call from its coordinator Kris McGuire.

“Hi, Barbara,” McGuire said in an extra friendly tone. Smith didn’t know McGuire; she’d simply signed an interest form for the new program. “How are you, Barbara?” McGuire continued. The conversation ran its course, leaving Smith befuddled by the strangely familiar manner of a woman she’d never met.

Soon after the call, Smith attended the first meeting of the group and solved the mystery. McGuire was a friend of Barbara Smith, it just happened to be a different Barbara Smith. Both Barbara Smiths had signed up to take part in the fledgling program.

Carpinteria’s two Barbara Smiths have since devised a system for living in a small town with a name twin. They tossed in a middle initial and go by Barbara A. and Barbara M. now.

In the years that followed their 2009 introduction, the Barbara Smiths found that they shared more than just the Host Program. Their mutual volunteer circles include Friends of the Library and Carpinteria Beautiful.

They share a dentist and endodontist too. At one point, the endodontist held up a set of x-rays to discuss plans for Barbara A.’s dental work. She gave them a close look then informed the doctor that he was holding up images of Barbara M.’s teeth.

Fortunately, the two women are both well liked and enjoy positive reputations in Carpinteria. “Everyone loves Barbara M.,” said Barbara A.

Castro reels in $20,000 fishing win

Local fishing hobbyist Juan Castro has very few tales about the “one that got away.” As one of the founding members of the Carpinteria Valley Sport Fishing Club, he has always had a fondness for the ocean and a knack for catching fish—a knack that recently earned him top prize in the CABO Summer Slam.

“My favorite book in the world is Old Man and the Sea (by Ernest Hemmingway) … I read that book to my daughter as a bedtime story when she was young … more than once,” said Castro, who owns the Restoration Division of Castro’s Cleaning and Restoration.

For over 20 years, Castro has been venturing down to Cabo San Lucas in Baja California to cast a line. It was there where he met Jaime “El Chame” (a type of fish) Pino in August of 1994, and the two have been fishing together ever since. “That’s the best place to fish.

I fished Australia … I fished Tahiti, and it’s not the same,” said Castro.

Recently, he returned to the region, teaming up with Pino and former Carpinteria High School agriculture advisor Holly Smith to compete in the Fourth Annual Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing, CABO Summer Slam. With Smith as one captain/angler and Pino (prohibited from fishing because of his professional angler status) as another co-captain, the trio set sail on June 9 in a field of nearly 40 boats. Instead of using the Castro Team’s regular boat, The Killer, they opted to bring in the faster BajaMark, captained

by Cabo San Lucas’ Luis Viera.

The target fish for the tournament were marlin, which had to be released, tuna, wahoo and dorado. “Since we

knew there were larger tunas in the Iman Bank, that was where we were going to fish,” explained Castro of the region his squad focused on during their two outings. The strategy worked out well as Team Castro hauled in two tunas that Friday, and did even better on Saturday, catching a 34-pound wahoo and a tuna, which took first place for day two.

The tunas caught over the weekend, took first place on both days. In addition to the winnings they earned for days one and two, they collected a jackpot for the two days combined. All in all, Castro and his teammates came home with a grand total of $19,722, and Castro was also named the top angler of the tournament.

Although Castro has won many trophies and collected cash prizes in the past, this was his biggest haul. Last November, he flirted with the possibility of another big cash payout in Cabo when he entered Team Castro to try its luck in the Western Outdoors Tuna Tournament, this time in search of wahoo. “We lost by 3.2 pounds and the pay-out was $65,000,” said Castro. The crew ended up finishing in second with no prize money.

But the longtime angler who habitually practices the “catch and release” method is concerned about the diminishing fish population in the area. “Not enough people are catching and releasing their fish … I’ve seen the fisheries going down, which is sad,” he said. He encourages others to remember “CPR”, Catch, Picture (take a photo), Release. That way the Castro Team of “thrill seekers and risk takers” as described by Hemingway himself, can set out for their next course of adventure and big catch.

Junior Warriors hold free summer workouts

Anyone between the ages of 5 and 14 who wants to build a foundation in footwork, speed and basic football drills can participate in the Junior Warriors free summer agility workouts. The workouts are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at El Carro Park. Meanwhile, Jojo Gonzalez shot a 102 and James Irabon a 118 for the Warriors next best scores. U14 girls wrap up season at Huntington tourney

The Carp United U14 Girls concluded their long season with a fourth-place finish at last weekend’s huntington Sun & Surf tournament. on Saturday they faced Redondo beach and earned a 4-1 win. they next faced Rancho Cucamonga and the game ended in a 1-1 draw, earning them a first-place seed and a spot in Sunday’s semifinals, where they faced a physical Claremont team. After a hard fought game, Carp united came up on the short end of the scoresheet and suffered a 3-2 loss, sending them to the consolation game where they faced Bakersfield and took a 2-0 loss.

“We’ve had a long and successful season. We were able to overcome injuries to key players all season long and we faced some very competitive teams. We participated in seven tournaments, played 26 games and finished with a 23-8-5 record. The most impressive statistic is that we scored 101 goals but only allowed 37. This group of young ladies made an early commitment to our program and each other, and it was evident in the way they competed game in and game out. it’s bittersweet to see our run end. i cannot wait to see the core group of players compete at Carpinteria high School over the next four years,” said head coach Jorge Reynoso.

On June 8 at approximately 10:15 p.m. a deputy noticed two men walking northbound on Linden Avenue. Observing the men yelling and pointing at passing vehicles, the deputy noticed one of them trying the doors of several closed businesses. Due to the increased number of break-ins and vandalism recently, the deputy parked his vehicle and asked the men to come speak with him. The deputy noted a strong smell of alcohol coming from the men. One of them did not have an ID on him but told the deputy that he was on county probation. A records check showed an active warrant for the man’s arrest, and the deputy took him into custody and transported him to Santa Barbara County Jail. The man left his backpack with the man he was walking with.

On June 12 at approximately 11:20 p.m. a deputy was driving through the parking lot for a group of businesses and restaurants on Casitas Pass Road when he observed three people walking in the area. The deputy noticed one of them from previous contacts, and knew that the man had an active misdemeanor warrant out for his arrest. Contacting the man inside a fast food restaurant in the area, the deputy conducted a records check to confirm the warrant and then arrested the man and transported him to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Local artist Rick Garcia will jury the next show at the Carpinteria Arts Center entitled “Landscapes and Dreamscapes.” The show’s ingathering will be held on Wednesday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 855 Linden Ave. (On Tuesday, June 27, an ingathering for jewelry will be held from 9 to 10 a.m.) Garcia paints many area landscapes in a plein air style, and his work shows in galleries across the country.

Painting the California Central Coast since the mid 1990s, Garcia’s inspiration harkens back to an earlier time. Born in 1953, he spent his early years soaking up the beauty of the back country near his grandparent’s ranch in Sebastapol, Calif. and the memory of those undeveloped vistas is still a strong influence in his work. A graduate of U.C. Berkeley, Garcia earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1977 and received his formal art training at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland from 1979 to 1982. Garcia was a nationally renowned illustrator and art director for 15 years with his design firm Garcia, Bickmore and Brown. The firm won over 20 Addy awards in that time. Garcia began the transition to a full-time career as a painter in the late 90s.

Little drummers of the Carrizo Plain

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham I had to drive 5 mph so I wouldn’t hit any of the little guys on a really dusty Soda Lake Road inside the Carrizo Plain National Monument, the last great bastion of the federally endangered giant kangaroo rat.

Midnight was approaching and lots of nocturnal giant kangaroo rats were hopping out of the dense, tall grasses and onto the open road. It’s hard to imagine, but these unique little critters are vital to California’s remaining historic grasslands.

That’s right. Although it’s the largest of the 20 species of kangaroo rat, it only weighs 5 ounces. Yet the little buggers are the keystone species of the Carrizo Plain, and most if not all other wildlife species within the monument depend on these 13-inch-long from nose-to-tail busy burrow builders to serve as the foundation for the entire ecosystem.

“Giant kangaroo rats are basically the key species in the entire Carrizo web,” said Bob Stafford, a wildlife biologist for California Fish and Wildlife. “As they go, so do a lot of the other endangered species.”

There are many predators in the Carrizo Plain that not only rely on giant kangaroo rats as a food source but also for their maze of intricate burrow sites.

Everything from kit foxes, coyotes, burrowing owls and badgers, to various snakes and long-tailed weasels. These critters locate, take over and modify giant kangaroo rat burrow sites, making them their own.

“The burrows are also used by bluntnose leopard lizards,” he said, “and California jewel flower is often associated with the burrow systems.”

Drought conditions on the Carrizo Plain have made it a challenge to assess their population health. With their big feet, almond-shaped eyes, large heads and long tails they work like little lawnmowers on the grasslands virtually mowing down huge swaths of grasses surrounding their burrowing sites. By flying over their sites, Stafford and his team look for these mowed areas to locate and count giant kangaroo rat populations.

“They mow down the area around their burrows so we can fly transects over the area to map the areas they mow down,” explained Stafford. “Problem is, if we don’t get any growth they have nothing to mow and we have nothing to survey. Therefore, we haven’t been able to do any surveys since 2011. That will change, though, after last winter’s rains.”

That’s good news for the giant kangaroo rat and all the other wildlife on these historic grasslands, but uncertainty is bound to mount for all things living on the Carrizo Plain if President Trump decides to open up the monument to oil drilling in the future. Five other national monuments in California and another 16 across the west are at risk.

In the meantime, it’s been a banner year for giant kangaroo rats across the Carrizo Plain. I had several good looks at one in the west end of the national monument as I constantly searched in the dark for one to photograph.

The endangered giant kangaroo rat makes the Carrizo Plain livable for a host of other native mammals and reptiles.

I found the burrowing site of one particularly busy giant kangaroo rat in the middle of the night. I watched it stuff its cheeks with blades of grass. After that it would swiftly return to its burrow, diving into it to tend to its young. I’d turn off my headlamp and wait patiently for several minutes for it to return for more shards of grass. There was more than enough of it to pad its burrow.

Soon I was seeing lots of giant kangaroo rats bounding out in the open, their eyes reflecting off my headlamp, their big feet allowing them to cover some ground.

It was a memorable year for wildflowers across the Carrizo Plain National Monument, but also for its tiny, night-dwelling inhabitants that most never see.
