Armed robber flees Mi Fiesta with thousands

An armed man stole thousands of dollars from Mi Fiesta Market at 4502 Carpinteria Ave. at 7:15 a.m. on June 30, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff ’s Department. Deputies responding to the call learned that a male suspect dressed in a blue hooded sweatshirt and dark blue pants had robbed the store while displaying a firearm minutes earlier. Despite an BOYD extensive search of the surrounding area, which included a K9 Unit, the suspect was not located. The Sheriff’s Forensics Unit also responded to process the crime scene and collect additional evidence. Initial reports indicate the suspect fled the store with approximately $11,000 in cash, however the exact amount of money stolen during the robbery is currently under investigation.

Local lady turns 100

When Rachel Harris Corbett turned 100 on July 1, friends and family hosted celebrations befitting the significant milestone. Born in Idaho, Corbett grew up on a farm where she developed an appreciation for fresh vegetables and healthy living that followed her throughout her long life. After completing business college, she met and married U.S. Army Sergeant John Harris in 1946 and moved to California. Corbett’s first daughter, Margaret, was born in Pomona. She had her second daughter, Lisa, just before moving to Carpinteria. Corbett worked for Carpinteria Motor Transport as a bookkeeper for nearly 30 years.

She volunteered at ABWA and Carpinteria Valley Republican Women. At age 91, she married Joe Corbett. Now Rachel resides at Carpinteria Senior Lodge in Carpinteria and attends First Baptist Church every Sunday. She has five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Summer students put out special edition CVN

Carpinteria Summer Academy students visited Coastal View News and Rockwell Printing on June 29 and made the news. The third-graders walked from Aliso School to the Carpinteria Avenue offices where they learned how the newspaper is published by helping to write and appear in a cover story about a sea monster attack at Linden Beach. Then the kids walked next door to Rockwell where owner Bill Dayka led a tour of his shop and gave them each a copy of their special edition CVN cover. Despite the headline, no one was actually injured by a green, scaly monster that came out of the ocean to throw sand at everyone on the beach.

Patriotism was alive and well in downtown Carpinteria last Saturday when the Independence Day Parade brought thousands out in their finest reds, whites and blues. Thirty-seven parade entries cruised downtown Linden Avenue to the delight of the packed sidewalks. Horses, classic cars, the Seaside Shuttle and even a garbage truck were decked out to move elected officials, past Carpinterians of the Year, service groups and youth organizations from the starting point on 9th Street to the ending point at 6th Street.

At its July 3 meeting, the Planning Commission gave final approval for a new ultra-modern, nearly flat-roofed house in the beach neighborhood, and by so doing erased several established Carpinteria community development standards such as “the form of buildings … should be compatible with adjacent and nearby properties” and “designs based on historic types should be encouraged to preserve … the unique character of the city” and “strong contrasting … roof forms should generally be avoided.”

The commission acknowledged that there is nothing like this project anywhere in the beach neighborhood, and an unusually large number of citizens voiced their strong opposition to such an extreme deviation from city standards. Nevertheless the commission swept away decades of their tradition of preserving our “small beach town” and approved the unique design.

This is not the way a democracy is supposed to work. There is supposed to be one set of rules that apply to everyone, not a governmental body saying, “the rules are what we say they are tonight.” Ad hoc, zigzag policy swings allowing one applicant a significant deviation from standards doesn’t pass the fairness test. The City Council needs to examine what happened in this case to see if the established planning standards need to be strengthened or review processes modified since standards now can be so easily ignored. If standards can be ignored, they should be eliminated because there is no point in having standards if they aren’t followed.

This approval will come back to haunt the Planning Commission. Every proposer of a radical new house will refer to this case and say, “You approved that extreme design, why not mine?” The new precedent is “anything goes.”

At the meeting there will be an update from the Ad Hoc Committee for the Future of Cannabis Operations in the County and a report of the results from the voluntary sign-ups for the Registry of Medical and Future Non-Medical Cannabis Cultivation. The agenda item and staff report for this meeting will be on the county’s website on July 6.

This meeting will be held on the fourth floor in the County Administration Building board room (105 E. Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara). The meeting is the last item on the agenda and will probably begin at 1 p.m. If you’d like more information about the possible timing of this agenda item, call the clerk of the board 568-2240 and/or watch the televised proceeding of the meeting on Channel 20.

White sharks make a summer appearance off local beaches

Multiple recent white shark sightings at Santa Claus Lane give a hint of irony to Carpinteria’s slogan, “World’s safest beach.” While there have been no reported attacks (or even particularly aggressive shark behavior), the increase in sightings of 6- to 8-foot apex predators just outside the surf line along one of Santa Barbara County’s most popular beaches, where multiple surf camps conduct programs for children, has raised alarm.

In 18 years of leading kids’ surf camps, Surf Happens owner Chris Keet never saw a shark at Santa Claus Lane before the El Niño summer of 2015 and its unprecedentedly warm water. Keet said he already has seen numerous sharks this summer. “I never try to keep information away from people,” Keet said, “I just tell them what’s going on.”

Paul Walker, the father of an 8-yearold girl in the Surf Happens camp, said, “Once you put your feet in the ocean, you become part of the food chain.” But, he countered, “living in fear is not living your life.” His daughter Vivienne’s enthusiasm far outweighed her fear, “Daddy, I caught so many waves!” she said. “We’re going to have to keep doing this.”

The Southern California Bight—the coastline that curves south-east from Point Conception to San Diego, including the Channel Islands—has many shallow, sandy beaches with relatively warm water that make ideal “nurseries” for juvenile white sharks, whose preferred prey are rays and fish.

While the fact that an 8-foot white shark is “just a juvenile” might be little comfort to a swimmer who encounters one, a 2010 study from the University of New South Wales found that the jaws of sub-adult White sharks can’t “handle the stress associated with big bites on big prey,” said study co-author Dr. Stephen Wroe.

“It is hard to believe, but at this size

great whites are basically just awkward teenagers that can’t hunt large prey very effectively,” said UNSW doctoral student Toni Ferrara, the lead author of the article.

“It seems paradoxical that the iconic jaws of great white sharks—made infamous by the classic Steven Spielberg movie Jaws— are actually rather vulnerable when these sharks are young. Great white sharks are not born super-predators, they take years to become formidable hunters.”

Another study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found that growth rates in white sharks in the North Atlantic are much slower than previously thought. Males are now thought to reach sexual maturity at around 26 years and females at 33 years, with a lifespan of over 70 years. How this research correlates to the uptick in juvenile white shark sightings in Southern California is unclear, but biologists see the banning of white shark fishing in 1994 as having a positive effect on their numbers in California. Additionally, seal populations—adult white sharks’ primary food source—are thriving.

“At about 10 feet, they start trying to catch marine mammals—off Channel Islands and Isla Guadalupe in Baja,” Marine Biologist Chris Lowe told the website Surfline.com, “although they’re still pretty bad at it.” Still, a frisky juvenile can make for a memorable experience, as Marie Radis shared in a recent email to CVN. She and her husband surfed at Santa Claus Lane on the evening of June 13, “and had quite an event with a seal using us for cover from a white, which we were able to see and identify.”

Anyone surfing or swimming in California shares the water with Carcharodon carcharias—the white shark—but the thousands of daily ocean goers relative to the number of attacks in Southern California suggests that summertime sightings notwithstanding, the odds of an encounter remain low. Keet, the owner of Surf Happens, pointed out, “I keep my own kids in surf camp each week.”

School board passes trimmed budget, 3-2

By PEtER DuGRE Facing a future with fiscal shortfalls, the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education adopted a budget for next year that slims down staffing levels to combat teacher raises and spiking pension and healthcare costs. Boardmembers Maureen Claffey and Rogelio Delgado dissented in the 3-2 vote on June 28 and had been vocal in previous meetings about wanting to know more about how administrators arrived at decisions for which positions to eliminate.

On May 23, the similarly split board had voted to eliminate four full-time equivalent positions from the payroll to bring down the budget deficit, which remains at $884,000. The budget vote was conducted at a special School Board meeting on June 28, but the presentation was on June 27.

Although property tax revenue, which accounts for 87 percent of the district’s funding, is projected to rise by over 5 percent, the growth in expenditures is set to outpace that. The increased revenue was enough to trigger a clause in teacher contracts to increase salaries, and thusly a portion of new funds were already earmarked for raises. Employee compensation consumes 86 percent of the $27.7 million budget. The district’s total revenues are $26.8 million.

“The biggest red flag for me is that we’ve been deficit spending for four, five, six years in a row now. And we haven’t gotten control of our budget,” said Board President Andy Sheaffer. “If we don’t make incremental cuts like we have been doing, then that out year becomes incredibly painful and incredibly dramatic for everyone.”

CUSD Chief Business Officer Maureen Fitzgerald explained that even with the cuts CUSD would be insolvent within three years as healthcare costs and employer pension contributions are projected to continue to climb. Public agencies throughout the state are grappling with the same issues.

“We really, really have to work closely on knowing where our money is going,” Fitzgerald said. “This budget was built to be able to track very carefully where our money is going, very specifically.

Working together we can maximize our resources and we can still not jeopardize our programs for the kids.”

The budget generates savings by eliminating the administrative position of Director of Special Programs, two teaching positions and a clerical worker. At a prior board meeting, Claffey said one of the teaching positions and the clerical position were at Rincon High School.

The CUSD LCAP identifies four goals: High quality standards of curriculum and instruction for every student, having students actively engaged in learning and participating in positive school culture in partnership with parents, achieving college or career readiness for all graduates and providing safe and well-maintained facilities.

The district wrote in the LCAP summary: “The District will focus intentionally on equity, and evaluation of our practices around the District to ensure that we are ensuring equity and access for all students and all families. These three goals—science, coherent math instruction and equity—will be the highlights of this year’s LCAP and related actions and services.”

The state uses the LCAP to track whether socioeconomically challenged and English learners, among other vulnerable student groups, are provided adequate programming to meet unique needs. In many districts, the state uses LCAP to provide specific funding to serve what it calls “unduplicated pupils,” but since CUSD is a Basic Aid district funded mainly by property tax, the state does not use the LCAP to determine supplemental funding and identify how the money is used. Because CUSD is a district with an over 50 percent population of unduplicated pupils and on the Basic Aid funding model, it must calculate what the state would have kicked in and demonstrate how that amount from within Basic Aid funding is allotted to programming serving the unduplicated pupils.

“As a district, we serve all of our kids as if they are those unduplicated pupils, but this process requires us to pull them out and separate them,” Fitzgerald said.

Joan J. Shook 6/21/1933 – 12/31/2016

Joan J. Shook passed away Dec. 31, 2016 in Payson, Ariz. Joan was born to Archie and Myrtle Doss on June 21, 1933 in Independence, Kan. Joan eloped with Leon Shook on Dec. 28, 1950 in Bentonville, Ark. Joan and Leon had three sons, James, Steven and Ron, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

After coming to Payson in 1987, Joan, along with Leon and Ron, operated and owned The Track Shack, Sugar Shack and Simply Joan.

For the love of libraries, books and good behavior CVN

THE SUMMERLAND SHORE F R A N D AV I S I’ve been paging through a newly released volume called “Library Book: Writers on Libraries.” It came out last month as a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Santa Barbara Central Library. Steven Gilbar edited the impressive collection, which has an introduction

by T.C. Boyle.

Close to 100 local writers contributed to the book, which was produced by the Friends of the Santa Barbara Public Library. A glance at the contributors’ page opens your eyes to just how many terrific writers live in our community. We live in a literary hot spot!

I’d just received my copy of the book (as a contributor, I got a free one) the same week as two long-time employees of the Carpinteria Library got an unceremonious heave-ho. Better change that to ceremonious—or even ritualistic, if you’re following the corporate playbook on how to axe employees. Which is to arrive without warning, announce to the person that she’s fired then and there, walk her to her desk to gather her things and escort her out the door.

This administrative style, callously inconsiderate as it is, from the public library system? Oh yeah, and with shocked children witnessing the event. It was as if execs from Uber or Oracle had taken over the library system and were now making policy decisions.

I swear I had that beautiful “Library Book” in hand when I learned about the Carp Library debacle. The irony sank deep. In the book were stories, essays and poems written by people in love with libraries, every one describing a favorite library or librarian, the experience of the place and the person having left an indelible mark on their hearts, dreams and even their futures.

book’s back cover: “I have found sanctuary in libraries my whole life, and there is sanctuary there now, from the war, from the storms of our families and our own minds. Libraries are like mountains or meadows or creeks; sacred space.”

Sanctuary? Sacred space? Tell that to the mistreated library employees.

I got to hear one of my favorite authors, Ray Bradbury, a few times when he came to speak at the Santa Barbara Writers Conference, as he did for more than 20 years. Bradbury’s love story about libraries, “Exchange,” is included in “Library Book.” In a preface, he says, “I didn’t go to college, but when I graduated from high school I went down to the local library and I spent 10 years there, two or three days a week, and I got a better education than most people get from universities. So I graduated from the library when I was 28 years old.”

It’s a gift we don’t give much thought to—access to a complete education provided free by our local library. You can get an overview of things from Wiki, but you learn in depth from books.

Recently the L.A. Times ran a couple of stories about new university libraries— beauteous structures, all glass and light and computer stations, and not a book in sight. A student was quoted as saying he never had or used “an actual book.”

Lordy! Must be a new term for those outof-date, squarish things populating my book shelves. Actual books!

Actual books continue to make the world go round, as they have since the earliest cuneiform collections of clay tablets. They are the great equalizer, spreading knowledge in fields of ignorance, bringing light into the dark, empowering the weak. Public libraries are, in the words of T.C. Boyle, “the essence of democracy.”

If you fear that cyberspace will overwhelm actual books and libraries, just check out the impassioned outpourings by the writers and authors in “Library Book.” The book is available from Amazon or at your local bookstore. A portion of the proceeds go, of course, to the Santa Barbara Public Library.

Q: What activities do you do when you visit a hospice patient?

A: It depends on the patient and the caregiver. Sometimes I mostly provide a break for the caregiver. Other times, it’s just for the patient. With one couple, the husband had dementia. While I was there, his wife would go to Bible study, and I would read the Bible to him.

Another wife used to enjoy going out with friends once a week. Her husband couldn’t be left alone, so I visited him. He had been a sailor. I would take him out for a walk, and I would use sailing terms with him. I just try to help make the people’s lives richer and more interesting.

“The Nature of the Mind,” a new body of work by Santa Barbara artist Rebecca Clark, will be on exhibit at Porch, 3823 Santa Claus Lane, through Aug. 31. The home and garden store will host an artist reception on Saturday, July 8, from 3 to 5 p.m. with refreshments and beverages. Rooted in her Buddhist practices and studies, Clark’s colorful cut paper collages explore themes of order and chaos, conditioned experience and the pursuit of enlightenment. The artist spends many hours painstakingly handcutting and arranging images that are then placed and glued onto Arches watercolor paper in a two-dimensional fashion. Library Bookstore celebrates plein air painting

A show featuring work from artist Leigh Alexandra Sparks’ recent trip to Italy with other local plein air painters will hang in the Friends of the Carpinteria Library Bookstore through September, with a portion of sales to benefit the library. Sparks is the owner of En Plein Air Gallery on Linden Avenue, as well as the Exhibit Chair for SCAPE—Southern California Artists painting for the Environment. A descendant of one of California’s earliest ranching families, Sparks paints daily to record and preserve the rural landscape of the state’s coastline and foothills. A reception in her honor will be held on Friday, July 28 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the bookstore, 5103 Carpinteria Avenue.

If you climbed the staircase in the home of Rosa and Foster Markolf, paused to appreciate the fascinating art on the walls, then took a right after admiring all the exotic keepsakes from the couple’s world travels, you would find a loft dedicated to Raggedy Ann and Andy. Rosa began amassing these dolls about 35 years ago when a friend gave her a pair as a joke. Rosa found the gift endearing, and her affinity led to other friends presenting her with more Raggedy dolls. The accumulation of Anns and Andys grew into a full-blown collection of several hundreds items including dolls, books and a wind-up toy box. Some of the dolls are nearly 50 years old, but Rosa says she likes them despite their truly “raggedy” appearance.

America is no stranger to Raggedy Ann collections, with one woman in Tampa, Florida owning nearly 3,000 Raggedy Anns and Andys. The two characters were created by author Johnny Gruelle in the early 20th century, and once production of the toys began, they took the country by storm. Though Rosa never owned a Raggedy Ann as a child, she feels a connection between her childhood and the dolls. Growing up in Missouri, Rosa’s mother made ragdolls for her and her nine siblings.

One might think these dolls would have been a hit with the children in Rosa’s life, but this collection gar-

Can’t look away for a minute

On June 20 at approximately 5:20 p.m. a deputy responded to a reported theft of personal belongings on Dump Road. A 68-year-old woman accused a transient man (described as a harmonica player who is tall and thin with a shaved head) of stealing $95, a checkbook, a brown corduroy jacket, a phone and a pipe with red and blue stripes. The woman said the cart was two-feet behind her as she stood on the bluffs. When she turned to leave she said all her belongings had been taken from the cart, and that people nearby told her that the transient man had taken her things and rode off on a bicycle eastbound on the bluffs trail. The deputy did not see or find the man, nor were the witnesses on the scene when he arrived. The deputy advised the woman to cancel her checks.

Still missing

On June 21 at approximately 2:30 p.m. a 69-year-old man came to the Sheriff’s sub-station to report the theft of his mobility scooter last April 29. The man said he regularly leaves for work at 11:30 p.m., taking his mobility scooter across the mobile home park where he lives, to get to his car parked on the street. He locks the scooter to some water pipes with a padlock and chain. The man reported that when he came back from work at approximately 7 a.m. on April 29, his mobility scooter was gone and the padlock was smashed. The deputy took a report and assigned the man a case number.

What does the roomie say?

On June 23 at approximately 3:20 p.m. a deputy responded to call from a man at his residence on Via Real regarding stolen personal items. The man had locked his bedroom door and was away for the work week. When he returned to his residence, the man found that someone had pried open his bedroom door and taken two cell phones, an Xbox video game unit and some cashed checks. The man’s roommate was home during the week.

Vigilante law

On June 25 at approximately 3:20 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the corner of Linden Avenue and 5th Street on a 911 call about a 56-year-old man brandishing a knife and threatening a woman at the bathrooms. When deputies arrived, they saw two men sitting on a concrete wall near the bathrooms and told the men that they were searching for a man with a knife. The men provided IDs and stated that they did not own knives. They allowed deputies to search them and no knives were found.

A deputy then spoke with the woman who called 911, who was farther down Linden at 3rd Street, and she said that one of the men the deputies had identified had been waiting for her when she came out of the bathroom and accused her of stealing his cousin’s cell phone. The woman said that she told the man that she did not steal the phone, and that she had already spoken with deputies about the incident. She said the man then pulled a knife out of his pants pockets and threatened her by saying, “I’m gonna kill you with this knife.” The deputy then read the woman a “Simmons Advisement,” (that although she would be taken to identify the man, the fact that he would be detained by deputies should not be used as evidence of his guilt). She said she understood the advisement and said she would definitely recognize the man who threatened her.

The deputy then drove the woman by the two men the other deputies had detained, and she positively identified the man she accused of threatening her.

Deputies released the other man, the woman signed a citizen’s arrest form and the accused man was arrested. The man admitted that he knew the victim, but denied threatening her or brandishing a knife. A deputy then transported the man to Santa Barbara County Jail.

The two parked themselves outside of Paseo Nuevo mall to watch the annual parade that honors color, creativity and nonconformity. After 27 years together, the couple can walk memory lane back to their first Solstice Parade together in the 1980s.

Local kids flock to VBS

Carpinteria Community Church hosted 80 children at its annual Vacation Bible School from June 12 to 16. This year’s theme “Paul and the underground Church” prompted the church to transform the parish hall, patio and numerous classrooms to 1st Century Rome. Not only was the church decorated to reflect the theme, all the volunteers and staff dressed the part of Romans as well. Fifty-three youth and adult volunteers staffed the VBS, along with Children’s Ministry Director Susan Solano and Pastor Jarrett Johnson. in addition to the daily songs, lessons, drama and games children visited the church patio, transformed into a Roman marketplace, where they could make crafts and spend their Roman denarii (coins). Children visited Paul, who was in chains under house arrest and guarded by Brutus Maximus, and visited the underground Church in their secret meeting place.

The week was capped off on Sunday with a retirement party for Solano, who has led 22 years of Vacation Bible Schools. The role will be passed on to an as-yet-to-be identified person. Anyone with interest in becomming the next CCC VBS Leader is welcome to contact the church.

Troop 50 Boys Scouts prepare to depart for a week at Shaver Lake.

Scouts go to summer camp

Carpinteria’s Boy Scouts packed their bags for a full week of skills-development at Camp Chawanakee Summer Camp last summer. Assistant Scoutmaster John Thomas described the camp on Shaver Lake as a perfect place for scouts to work on their scouting skills and achieve the merit badges needed for advancement in scouting.

After walking 6 to 10 miles per day in 90 degree heat, the lake also provided some much-needed refreshment. The merit badges earned included Citizenship, Fishing, Welding, Shotguns, Rifle, Canoe, to Small Boat Sailing Horsemanship and Woodcraft.

Thomas reported that by the end of the week, the boys were ready to come home to their beautiful beach city.

“Born a Crime”

Born during Apartheid to a SwissGerman father and black Xhosa mother, comedian Trevor Noah shares stories from his childhood and young adult life.

His “mixed” parentage was, quite literally, a crime. His stories give insight into not only his personal history but also to the cultures, black, white and colored of South Africa. The subject matter is difficult, with violence, racism and poverty all being part of his story. Quick-witted and fortunately fleet of foot, Noah is able to find humor and love even in the worst of times, mostly owing to his strongwilled and independent-minded mother.

I highly recommend the audio version of this book. Noah is a talented performer, and language (he speaks several, including Zulu, Tswana, Afrikaans and Tsonga) is such an important part of his story that it should be listened to in his own voice in order to be truly appreciated.

Anyone who attended the July 1 Rods and Roses car show early Saturday morning on Linden Avenue probably noticed several “yellow jackets”—Lions Club members who volunteered to help by assisting with the parking of some 200 vehicles. Led by Lion Bill Crowley, the volunteers helped drivers find their assigned position and guided them as they backed up into their spots. Club President Clyde Freeman reported that with 200 cars parked diagonally on Linden Avenue, the spaces are not very wide. He added, “The other challenge they have is that of not spending too much time admiring each vehicle as they roll down Linden.”

“State of Wonder”

“State of Wonder,” the next novel up for discussion by the Library Book Club, opens with Dr. Marina Singh reading a letter from Dr. Annick Swenson to Mr. Fox, Singh’s boss and secret lover. Singh’s co-worker at a pharmaceutical company has reportedly died at Swenson’s research site in the Amazonian rainforest, and his widow begs Singh to find out what happened. Fox agrees to send her, in part because Swenson has been given a blank check to conduct research into a new miracle drug and refuses to inform Fox of her progress. Susan Storer Clark of the Chicago Tribute writes that “Patchett’s gift for combining the mythic with the practical, her ability to create memorable characters and truly ingenious plot twists make ‘State of Wonder’ a rich and rewarding read.” The book club has returned to its former schedule of meeting on the third Wednesday of the month. Anyone interested in reading and discussing the novel can attend the next meeting on July 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carpinteria Library, 5141 Carpinteria Ave. Copies of the novel are now available for borrow at the library.

Foresters fall to Neptune Beach

Playing on their new home turf of Pershing Park in downtown Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Foresters Baseball team battled Neptune Beach on July 2 but ultimately lost 5-4. Despite the loss, the Foresters, who play in the California Collegiate League and are fresh off their sixth National Baseball Congress championship, have gotten off to a fast start with a 14-6 league record, a 16-7 record overall, and an 11-3 record at their new park.

“We like the energy here (Pershing Park); the city has been wonderful to us,” said Pintard, said Foresters Head Coach and Executive Director Bill Pintard.

With a home office in Carpinteria, the team’s change of playing field inched it closer to home. Prior to this year’s move, the team played at UCSB’s Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. “We almost moved to Carpinteria,” said Pintard, whose organization looked at Carpinteria High School as one of the potential venues for this year’s move.

Forester team culture cultivates giving back. The Foresters annually sponsors Hugs for Cubs, a program that helps kids with cancer by giving them the opportunity to attend Major League Baseball games.

When Neptune Beach Pearl from Alameda took on the ’Sters last weekend, the game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Santa Barbara centerfielder Evan Lee belted a one-out single to right. Lee would then steal second and reach third following a wild pitch. A second wild pitch by Pearl starting pitcher Johnny Breidenthal put the Foresters up 1-0.

Neptune Beach would get on the board in the sixth following a single and stolen base by second baseman Jordan Williams. Then right fielder Lucas Halstead’s single knocked Williams home to tie the score at one. Santa Barbara responded in the bottom of the sixth after a leadoff single by Hank LoForte. LoForte then stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly by Lee put the Foresters back on top by a score of 2-1.

Meanwhile, Foresters’ starter Blair Henley was mowing down the opposition, giving up only five hits and striking out seven. In the bottom of the eighth, the home team tacked on another run to take a 3-1 lead. After holding the Pearl scoreless in the eighth, Corey Herndon took the mound again in the ninth for Santa Barbara. But Neptune Beach designated hitter James Free drew a leadoff walk, and the next batter, Halstead, launched a two-run homer to left to even the game at three.

The Pearl shut down the ’Sters in the ninth to force the game into extra innings.

Colton Follett then took the mound for Santa Barbara. A leadoff walk to shortstop Jake Chappell set the stage for a Neptune Beach comeback, as a sacrifice and an error by the pitcher put runners on second and third with nobody out. A fly ball to center would be the first out.

After an intentional walk to Williams loaded the bases, Chappell reached home when the ball got away from Forester catcher Steven Coe to put the visitors up 4-3.

The Pearl added another run to take a 5-3 lead. The Foresters would not go down without a fight, though, scoring one in the bottom half of the 10th, and

Stephen Joyce brought his Coastal View News along on his visit to the Dhanmanyangi temple in Bagan, Myanmar. He feels fortunate to have visited what he describes as an up-and-coming tourist destination in Southeast Asia. “A land of many contrasts,” Joyce writes of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma and renamed by a military junta in 1989), “with farmers still using oxen to plough the fields whilst talking on their cell phones.” He also notes that the people are very friendly and the food is safe and fantastic.

Several 4-H students from the Santa Barbara region met Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) in her office on June 19. The students were in Sacramento for an annual 4-H conference where they elect new state officers and meet with lawmakers to learn about their role at the State Capitol. Senator Jackson met with the 4-H students to discuss their involvement with 4-H, the difference it has made in their lives, what is has taught them, the skills they have gained, how they have used those skills in school and where they plan to attend college.

Perhaps one of the most common misconceptions about holistic veterinarians is that they do not address Western approaches, that they are “woo woo,” and that they put down all Western medication or surgery protocols.

Below are some of the methods I use that have and can help hundreds of pets, young and old, athlete and couch potato, in various degrees of body discomfort:

Numerous studies have demonstrated increased blood flow, oxygenation, enhanced healing and reduction of pain with this natural method.

Low-level laser therapy

The physiological repair effects of low level laser therapy are achieved by the light’s re-energizing (repolarizing) injured and malfunctioning cell membranes. LLLT also increases the energy output within the cell by more than 150 percent. The extra energy becomes a repair and restoration mechanism so that the damaged cell begins to thrive once again.
