On Friday, July 14 the Carpinteria Junior Lifeguards exhibited their endurance, strength and skill at the annual Carpinteria Competition. The Carp Comp brings hundreds of athletes from all along the California coastline to compete in feats like paddles, swims and games. The athletes raced up the city beach and swam through the water on the overcast day, but a little fog is no match for the Carp junior guards. Surfing is the primary activity, but participants also play team building beach and water games, and learn about ocean stewardship. healthy lunches and snacks were served and enjoyed by all. Each participant is offered a scholarship to attend a full-week surfing camp. Jenny Keet of Surf Happens said, “The kids are encouraged to pursue their passions no matter what obstacles life presents them.”

Trail blazed sans permit

The City of Carpinteria issued a stop work order last week for unpermitted construction undertaken by Venoco on the Carpinteria Bluffs near the Seal Watch overlook. The oil and gas company that recently filed chapter 11 bulldozed a new path connecting the terminus of the city’s trail along the edge of the Venoco parking lot with the existing trail along the bluff. The project required a development plan and coastal development permit that had not been obtained.

Girl Scouts go south of the border (way south)

The most harrowing aspect of the trip—apart from the many native insects the scouts encountered—was ziplining across the rainforest canopy. Kristina Calkins, the Scout master, said that many girls overcame their fear during this activity. “You couldn’t always see the other side and there were eight different ziplines, one of which was a football field tall!” Calkins said. Stineman described

The Girl Scouts of America mission is to build courage, confidence and character, all three of which were in high supply as Carpinteria’s own troop returned from their service learning adventure in Costa Rica on July 7.

This trip has been the culmination of several years of fundraising efforts. The task of raising nearly $3,000 for each scout was not an easy one, requiring extensive rummage sales and lemonade stands beginning in 2014, in addition to traditional cookie sales. Jillian Stineman, a 13-yearold troop member, recounts one creative form of fundraising, a pie-throwing booth at the Avocado Festival, joking that only now has she finally gotten the last of the whipped cream washed off.

While the central challenge of their fundraising effort was the amount of time required to accomplish their goal, through persistence and ambition—as well as help from a supportive community—the local troop was ready to set off on June 26 for the 10-day trip to their Central American destination.

The journey included swimming in natural hot springs at the base of the Arenal Volcano, kayaking on Lake Arenal, and observing the native animals in their natural habitat. Experiencing the agriculture of the country was another highlight. “We had a chocolate plantation tour and a coffee plantation tour, and I love both!” said Stineman Along the way, they met and became fast friends with male and female scouts from Costa Rica. Stineman said, “We sang a lot and played a bunch of games, and some of us tried to speak in Spanish and

the practical jokes played on her by some of the male scouts, who led her and other girls to believe that they would not make it across to the other side. “The guys were trying to be funny and would send you off and say, ‘Wait! You have to do it like this!’ or ‘You have to hold it like this!’ and they would give you a heart attack!”

Although they all enjoyed their time in Costa Rica, the experience was not solely for pleasure. As a service learning trip, a major part of the journey involved educating scouts on their roles and responsibilities as members of a global community. Their service work focused on stabilizing the ecosystem of the Costa Rican Central Pacific Coast by planting mangrove trees in order to prevent soil erosion. Stineman explained, “the reason why we were planting mangrove trees

was because as people are putting down hotels and houses near the edge of the river, they chop down mangrove trees (whose) roots are super strong and grow super deep and they cement the soil and keep it nice and hard. but over the years, water will run down and the soil will start to erode and suddenly the houses will slide away.”

This is not the only important work that our local girl scouts are involved in, as those entering high school next year will soon begin their Gold Award projects, involving extensive community service and the development of a sustainable solution to a local problem.

The Carpinteria community should expect to see these young ladies hard at work improving the world a little closer to home.

Go back to the drawing board

An appeal to the Carpinteria City council for reversal of the Planning Commission’s July 3, 2017 approval of a new house of neo-modern design at 5157 8th Street, in regard to its incompatibility with the surrounding neighborhood of bungalows, was filed on July 13, 2017.

The issues surrounding the appeal include such as the precedent-setting nature of the design, the unrelenting industrial look and neighborly disregard of the east and especially west “privacy” building walls, front setback concerns, interpretation overreach of the Genera Plan and Municipal Code, justification for negotiation of bungalow architectural design by over-valuation of such as building materials and green attributes, inattention to citizen opposition, and a narrow twomember Planning Commission vote for approval. These and other issues can be reviewed at City Hall in detail.

Also, as a point of interest, we recall the “Bungalows and Distinctive Houses” of Carpinteria booklet compiled in 2004 by the Carpinteria Valley Association as a tribute to “these wonderful old homes,” and the excerpt from this booklet, “The Core, East of Linden” section, which has been handed out through the HOST program at the Carpinteria Visitors Center for a number of years in encouraging a walking tour of the old homes of the area surrounding the neo-modern house at issue in this appeal.

We hope that Carpinterians concerned with keeping the bungalow nature of downtown Carpinteria will continue to make their views known to the City of Carpinteria and will show support to stop a pivotal change in the historic character of our town by attending the upcoming City Council meeting with this item on the agenda likely, but not yet confirmed, for Aug. 14, 2017.

Re: Proposal for contemporary home on 8th Street. This proposal is an outrage; it will ruin the character and heritage of this beautiful street. If you don’t think that this boxy contemporary design will not set a precedent for future development, I suggest you take a drive up to Pismo Beach. I lived there during the 1940s and 1950s when living in Pismo was akin to living in Carpinteria. All it took was for the city to approve the structures like the one proposed for 5157 8th Street to change the whole aspect of Pismo. Let’s fight to keep the quaint charm of our beach city.

A treasure within a treasure

Perhaps as interesting as the 1940 Carpinteria Valley Directory recently found

by Lou Panizzon and sent to the Coastal View News, is the signature on the upper left corner of the pamphlet: STEWART MEIGS. Stewart Meigs (1908-1974) is the grandson of Peveril Meigs (1847-1921), who arrived in Santa Barbara in 1887.

Peveril Meigs bought 104 acres on the sparsely settled Mesa where he grew beans and pumpkins and raised his family. Meigs Road, a primary road connecting the Mesa to the city of Santa Barbara, bears his name. Peveril’s son, Peveril Meigs, Jr. (1876-1926), married Lorena Stewart in 1901. They had four children, of whom pamphlet owner, Stewart Meigs,

is third (carrying his mother’s maiden name as his first name). In 1924 when Stewart was 16, tragedy struck the Meigs family during a camping trip to Cueva Valdez on Santa Cruz Island with a large group of friends, including Western artist Edward Borein. Stewart Meigs’ uncle, Milton Stewart, 40, and aunt, Mary Stewart Wilkinson, 49, were drowned in a skiff accident offshore from their camp.

Stewart Meigs later married Alice Scott, and they had three sons. He died on May 19, 1974 at age 66. Forty-three years after his death, his pamphlet made its way to the Coastal View News.

District elections would diversify city council

As a resident of Carpinteria, I believe our city should establish district elections for the city council. District elections would lead to more people running for city council who currently cannot afford the cost of a political campaign that encompasses the entire city.

The California Voting Rights Act provides strong protections for protected classes. In the past 20 years, only one Latino has been elected to the Carpinteria City Council, but Carpinteria’s population is more than 40 percent Latino. This lack of representation is not merely unfair, it is illegal. District elections must be implemented when an at-large method of election results in vote dilution of a protected class.

District elections are sweeping the state. According to the Rose Institute in Claremont, more than 30 California cities have implemented district elections in recent years. Carpinteria should join this list.

In addition to greater representation, district elections lead to more neighborhood identity. Carpinteria will be a stronger, better and fairer city with district elections.

The City of Carpinteria General Plan Committee gathered on July 17 at city hall to engage stakeholders on the issue of community health. As a new element of the General Plan—currently in its nascent stage of drafting—the Healthy Community Element will seek to set community goals in the areas of general wellness through social equity, housing and economic opportunities and an emphasis on education in physical and mental health.

Overall, designing a blueprint for outreach and identifying priorities is a way to increase the quality of life across the community, commented consultant Rita Bright, and while committee members praised many representatives of nonprofit groups for their continuing support of those most vulnerable in the community, it remained unclear what greater role the city could play in ensuring public health beyond what it already does.

City Councilman Al Clark, a member of the General Plan Committee, commented that much of what the Healthy Community Element highlighted over-

laps with other areas of the General Plan, which prioritizes environmental conservation and preserving a small community character. Clark supported the idea of finding ways to improve local access to healthcare, given Carpinteria’s relative isolation from population centers and limited medical providers.

City Councilman Brad Stein said, “One thing I have to remind people of is that geographically, we’re very small and can only do so much … We have to be eyeswide-open, and I don’t mean to be a wet blanket, but there’s only so much we can do as a small community.”

The meeting was the very first on the Healthy Community Element, which with the rest of the General Plan will not be complete until 2020, and represented an initial forum for community members to provide input for the city’s guiding document.

On the importance of the entire exercise to update the General Plan, Planning Commissioner John Callender, also a committee member along with Planning Commissioner David Allen, who was absent, commented on the overall signifi-

cance of the process. “As a planning commissioner, by the time (the commission) sees a project, it’s essentially baked; it’s done. There’s a little wiggle room around the edges, but to the extent the community has significant concerns to address, it’s not really the time to address them.”

Callender said the once-in-20-years moment of updating the General Plan is the time to confront underlying issues and set the city on a steady course.

Amec Foster Wheeler, the consulting firm working with the city on the General Plan, invited groups helping with homelessness, youth, mental health and other outreach organizations to present on what work is currently being conducted to improve community health.

The gathering of minds was designed to evaluate where the community currently stands in order to define goals and draft the Healthy Community Element by identify actions that can be taken to bolster ongoing efforts. That draft likely will not be complete until the end of 2018 or beginning of 2019.

The World Health Organization created the idea of assessing community

health beginning in the 1970s by looking at community needs like access to healthy foods and promotion of recreation to improve quality of life and health outcomes to the population at large. Populations without access to food, housing and recreation generally suffer poorer health, which can drain entire communities of vitality.

Dave Moore, a volunteer with Hopenet, which performs community outreach in support of suicide prevention and behavioral health, said during public comment, “We are more than keepers of our brothers and sisters. We are our brothers and sisters,” in encouraging the city and community members to realize that everyone is susceptible to rising and falling together without a proper vision and support system for community health.

As part of the continued outreach to stakeholders, two more workshops on the Healthy Community Element will be held in the fall at a place and time to be determined.

The next General Plan Committee meeting will focus on planning for sea level rise and is scheduled for Aug. 21.

Body of missing man found in Lompoc creek

The body of Eric “Sunny” Buttler, a 57-year-old Ojai man last seen in Carpinteria on June 24, was found in a creek near Lompoc on July 14. According to a press release from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, he stopped overnight in Carpinteria for unknown reasons while traveling from Ojai to Lompoc. A missing persons Facebook post by Buttler’s brother, said that his phone was discovered at the Carpinteria Chevron station. On July 4, his vehicle was located in an unincorporated area of Santa Maria. An investigation into Buttler’s death is underway, and the Sheriff’s Office is releasing no additional details at this time. Clarence Peterson 1920 - 2017

Clarence passed away peacefully in his Carpinteria home of 67 years on July 10.

Clarence was born on a farm in Gresham, Neb., in 1920. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, June Wasson, and his four siblings. He is survived by his four children, Randy, Sandy, Gary, Terri; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In 1937, the Petersons came to California following the Wullbrandts and Barbers who left Nebraska during the Depression.

In 1938, he graduated from Carpinteria High where he was an all round athlete, but baseball was his game and he was honored to be voted MVP. He later worked at the Lemon Packing House before moving to LA for a short time to work at Lockheed on P38s. In 1944 he proudly served in the Navy.

In 1945, in partnership with his family, they opened Peterson’s Café in Carpinteria at the corner of Carpinteria Avenue (then Highway 101) and Linden Avenue.

It was there he met his future wife, June, when she came to work at the café, and they married that same year. After the café, he went to work for Golden State Dairies which later became Foremost (McKesson) and spent most of his 34 years with the company in the Ventura office retiring as the District Manager for Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

Clarence was very proud to be a charter member of both Faith Lutheran Church in Carpinteria, which held its first service in 1959, and of the Ventura Lions Breakfast Club, which began in the 1970s. Throughout the years, he served in many different roles in both organizations including the actual construction of the church and of the Lions Braille Trail in Ojai.

Throughout his long life his family, friends and steadfast faith were most treasured. His memory and ability to remember details was legendary. From the history of his Nebraska farm life to the early history of Carpinteria, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties he was a wealth of knowledge. He was a humble, honorable man full of kindness and faith. Clarence will be sorely missed and forever loved!

A graveside service will be held at the Carpinteria Cemetery on Thursday, Sept.

14, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faith Lutheran Church.

Sandra Lee Dewey 2/27/1942 - 6/12/2017

Sandra Lee Dewey, 75, went home to be with her heavenly father after a long and heartbreaking struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born on Feb. 27, 1942 in San Diego, Calif., Sandra was the oldest of five children born to Milo and Helen Cassel.

After graduating from a private business college in San Diego, Sandra married Robert Dewey and together they moved to Carpinteria, Calif. There she lovingly raised her two children and spent the next 50 years in the city she cherished and affectionately called home.

Sandra began her career working for GE in downtown Santa Barbara. After having her children she returned to work as a staff writer and Women’s Editor for the Carpinteria Herald. She then worked in Marketing and Sales for Bristol-Myers Squibb & Hall Surgical. Trying to retire several times, she always seemed to find her way back into the work force where she ultimately enjoyed being.

Sandra lived and loved her life simple.

She would travel to Vermont to see the leaves and seasons change; she hiked the rainforests of Maui, and spent so many early mornings walking on the beach, taking in the joy. Often with a cup of tea and binoculars, she sat in her dining room admiring the view of what she called “her mountains,” watching and documenting the birds as they migrated through town.

Sandra eventually relocated to Encinitas, Calif. to live with her daughter.

For eight years Sandra was courageous as she traveled through the lonely and heartbreaking stages of Alzheimer’s, her best friend and daughter always devotedly by her side.

Now at peace and whole again, Sandra passed away on the morning of June 12, 2017. She is survived by her son, Robert Alden Dewey Jr. and his wife Anita of Belton, Mo., daughter Karen Lee Boyle of Encinitas, Calif., brothers Daniel and Benjamin Cassel, sister Jeanette Cassel of San Diego, and Cinnamon, her beloved cat of almost 20 years.

A private memorial was held in Encinitas, Calif. to celebrate her life. Donations are welcome at the local chapter of the San Diego Alzheimer’s Association.

Flocks of folks are staking their umbrellas on clean sand to enjoy a fun day at Summerland beach now that the beach is relatively tar and oil free. We can thank Steve Curran of the State Lands Commission for coming up with a temporary solution for plugging the leaky well head that’s been besmirching our beach for the last few years.

While State Lands has been moving through the EIR process for capping the orphan well, Curran suggested jamming a stick down the wellhead as an interim solution. I don’t know who did the actual corking of the big polluting pipe, but the post is visible sticking up from the surf below Lookout Park. Voila, no more oil.

At least not on the sand. Oil is still being released in the water, and a recent aerial survey shows oil plumes darkening the waters offshore.

Those plumes were cited by the Environmental Defense Center’s attorney Linda Krop at a hearing before the State Assembly Natural Resources Committee. The committee approved Senate Bill 44, which provides a funding measure for identifying and cleaning up the improperly abandoned wells that still litter California beaches. Summerland has the dubious distinction of having the most leakers.

More committee reviews of SB 44 will follow, but if all goes well, the bill should hit the governor’s desk by late August or early September. Meanwhile, the Becker well fix has been fully funded to the tune of $1.4 million, and the big noisy repair involving tugboats, jackhammers, barges and temporary platforms should commence this fall.

Lookout Park’s big switch

For years the community, led by the Summerland Citizens Association, has lobbied for a park expansion utilizing the big space currently occupied by park host vehicles. Finally, with the help of

A private citizen has gifted county parks with a spanking new ATV for patrolling Summerland’s lengthy beach. As I understand it, the need for the ATV was sparked by last year’s attack of a horse by an off-leash dog. The vehicle will be employed by rangers for beach patrol and to respond to emergencies such as this more quickly. It seems likely that dog owners who have grown accustomed to letting their dogs roam free on the beach will have to be a lot more careful about heeding the leash law.

Catching a little S.B. history

I signed up for a free historical walking tour of Santa Barbara’s waterfront. A group of us met at the Maritime Museum for the nearly two-hour tour led by John Ummel. John began with an account of Santa Barbara’s founding and a history of the yacht harbor’s bad placement requiring the constant pumping of sand to keep it from clogging up.

We walked along Cabrillo, pausing to hear the story of Syuxtun, the Chumash village located where motels now stand.

John illustrated his account with big glossy photos, including early incarnations of the city’s bathhouses and the famous 500-room Potter Hotel that burned down after only a few years of operation.

The final stretch of the tour took us through the funk zone where murals and wine tasting rooms were pointed out.

A French couple on the tour wanted to know which tasting rooms were the best, but John wouldn’t venture an opinion on the matter.

I learned some new, interesting stuff, such as the fact that sand pumped from the yacht harbor is dumped farther down the coast, where it replenishes beaches like Summerland’s. The tour was a good way to view a very familiar environment in a new way. Check out John’s tour at freewalkingtoursb.com

The park host will be moved to the smaller, upper (west) end of the park.

A contractor has been secured to create a parking pad, and grading should commence soon. SCA board members met with Yanez for a walking tour to give input on design suggestions for the anticipated expansion, including picnic area location, open spacing, fencing and plantings. Movies in the Park

A tale as old as time comes to the big screen under the stars this week. The 2017 live action “Beauty and the Beast” will be shown at Movies in the Park on Thursday, July 20 after sunset at Linden Field. Belle, played Emma Watson, and the ultimately lovable beast, played by Dan Stevens, star in the live action remake complete with the cherished songs that premiered in the Disney animated classic.

“Beauty and the Beast” is the second in a six-part series that screens every Thursday night through Aug. 17. Films are free and attendees are invited to bring a blanket or low beach chair to sit on. Carpinteria Library’s annual Old Town Fiesta arrives this weekend with dancing, eating, and arts and crafts.

The free event will take place on Saturday, July 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Seaside Park, 5103 Carpinteria Ave. This year’s Spirit of Fiesta Norma Escárcega and Junior Spirit of Fiesta Eve Flores will dance, and there will be performances by Mariachi Los Toreros and singer Irma Segura.

“Baby Driver”

Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a very good driver. ‘Baby’ is his name (though, yes, he is quite young—maybe a teenager), and getaway driving is his business.

He drives fast and creatively, getting his criminal cohort out of jam after jam by spinning out, dodging into alleys, riding up on embankments and driving 90 in reverse. His driving is like art—like music.

Which makes sense, because Baby listens to music pretty much 24/7. He has tinnitus from a car accident way back, and so listens to music to drown out the ringing. He also just likes music, makes music and treats us (the audience) to his own personal “bank robbing” Spotify station throughout the movie.

Baby works for Doc (Kevin Spacey), who is a sort of crime boss. Doc sets up heists with various different crews, but Baby is always his driver.

Baby is a nice guy, though, and a kid. So you might wonder how he got mixed up with a character like Doc. Turns out, Baby once stole a car loaded with some of Doc’s especially valuable merchandise, and instead of just killing him or breaking his knees, Doc decides to make Baby his indentured servant.

So Baby whips around town with hardened criminals in his back seat and carefully selected tracks on his iPod. There’s an oddly light touch with this soundtrack, and more generally with the mood of the movie, given how hard some of these criminals are—they are thieves, yes, but also cruel, unrepentant murderers. But I guess you’ve gotta pay the bills somehow.

And Baby is almost square with Doc. So, although Baby’s chosen profession is less than savory, he’s just about out, and he promises to become a new man (or I guess just a man, since it’ll be the first time).

And Baby really wants to be out.

Some of that I suppose has to do with him being a “good” person. But it also has to do with a budding romance with Debora (Lily James), a waitress who gets Baby’s quirks and

who is also eager to start anew.

So Baby is counting down the days.

The problem is, as you might have guessed, Doc isn’t exactly keen on Baby leaving. Baby is Doc’s driver. And he’s good. Doc needs a good driver. And Doc always does what it takes to get what he needs.

Doc makes all the usual threats— knee-breaking, family hurting, girlfriend harassing, etc. and Baby appears to be stuck.

But, when you think about it, getting unstuck is sort of Baby’s specialty.

“Baby Driver” is in many ways— perhaps even at its core—a bad movie.

Its plot is painfully unoriginal. Its characters are (mostly) irritating. Its acting is spotty (Ansel Elgort is an exception on each of the last two counts). And its screenplay is cliché and way too talky/ telly. You know there’s a problem when you wish the deaf/mute character would just wrap it up already.

All signs point to a flop. And yet, somehow, the movie is (I hesitate to say it…) enjoyable. There’s no denying it. This hollowed-out hulk of a movie has some other ingredient—something like style—that sort of saves it. Over its rust-ravaged frame is some magical glittery paint that makes it watchable, even likable. Baby’s driving is a ton of fun to watch. The soundtrack is good.

And Baby himself has charisma. The love story, which is really dumb in a lot of ways, is nonetheless easy to get into.

I suppose it’s sort of like the cool kid in class—he’s got no depth or personality and really is pretty unbearable when you think about it, but he’s handsome and just has some kind of watchable way about him. “Baby Driver” is like that. I don’t condone it. But, ya know, I did kind-a like watching it.

“Baby Driver” is rated R for violence and language throughout.

Deputies called to intervene in a street fight at Sandyland Road and Ash Avenue on July 8 at 5 p.m. caught up with one of the men implicated, but he claimed his involvement was on the receiving end of a pummeling. Officers tracked the victim down after witnesses pointed to him fleeing on his bicycle heading into Carpinteria State Beach.

He said it all started when an SUV cut him off and he yelled at the driver. The passenger got out and “jumped” the surly cyclist, according the man, 49. Also, witnesses had told officers that they heard one of the men involved proclaim, “I have a hatchet!” The witness indicated that the hatchet was likely in the cyclist’s white satchel. It wasn’t.

The cyclist said the menacing driver remained in the vehicle clutching the hatchet in a menacing way. However, the driver never exited the vehicle nor did he lunge at or threaten the cyclist in any threatening manner. Apparently leery of law enforcement, the cyclist, who was scratched on his face and bleeding

from his lip, opted to not pursue charges against his assailants.

He wouldn’t have the option of what charges were pursued later in the evening when officers were called to investigate a prowler and general nuisance at the state beach campground. A man was irritating neighbors, taking items that didn’t belong to him and actively pursuing a buyer for his crystal meth. The cyclist, 49, was the alleged perpetrator, and officers uncovered meth and a pipe in his shoe.

School’s out for summer

Two schools were invaded by burglars on July 5 and 6, but the highest value product swiped by thieves was allegedly $90 worth of sunscreen at a 6th Street preschool. The other Carpinteria Avenue school had a printer knocked over near a window where it’s believed the thieves gained access to the school, but nothing of value was reported missing from the many cafeteria cabinets that were left open and rummaged through.

Burglars found the one window with a broken lock at the Carpinteria Avenue school, but the preschool wasn’t so lucky.

In addition to the sunscreen, school administrators reported that $5 worth of color markers were gone.

In reporting the crimes, deputies noted that the MO fits many crimes in Carpinteria over the past two months where it appears the crooks broke in hoping to score cash but took little else when no cash was to be found. It’s unclear whether other thefts involved massive amounts of sunscreen.

Deputies encountered a man, 52, at 3:45 p.m. on July 12 on Via Real and investigated what they believed was an open container in the man’s possession. For his part, the man said the open container was an empty container that he was depositing in a waste receptacle. Still, deputies sniffed out a potential scofflaw and ran the man’s record, which produced an active warrant for failure to appear in court to face justice on a utility theft charge.

Over 90 students from Goleta to Carpinteria entered artworks for Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District’s third annual Youth Art Poster Contest this spring, and top honors went to several local children. Jaqueline Guadian of Aliso School and Carpinteria Library’s after school program received first place in the youngest division, in which Esmeralda Rodriguez of Canalino School and Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club placed second. Crystal Echeverria of Canalino School and Carpinteria Library tied with Marvin Lujano of Aliso School and Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club for third-place in the middle division. Sophia Thomas of Canalino School and Carpinteria Library placed second in the upper division. Kids used their imaginations to create art around the theme “Buses of the Future,” and winners were voted on by MTD employees. The annual summer camps hosted by Carpinteria Arts Center now include a performance element every Friday. Guest teacher Toni Mackie has shared her assortment of African instruments with the Art by the Sea students for the last few weeks.

This Friday, July 21, at noon will launch a series of four drama performances by the Arts Center’s drama camp. “Lots of fun happening at the arts center this summer,” reported Coordinator Kristina Calkins.

Fair Play St. JoSeph hoStS rip-roaring carnival

They arrived on trucks mid-week, and by last Friday over a dozen massive ride structures had gone up in the fairgrounds at St. Joseph Catholic Church–perfectly timed for the annual, three-day fundraising festival that leaves Carpinteria kids with the sweet taste of cotton candy and memories of bright lights and big thrills. Perennial favorites like lotería, the dime toss, strawberry shortcake and the Ferris wheel reappeared for the weekend. The festival celebrated its 60th year, once again raising funds for the church and its myriad programs.

The home of Kika Hutchings has more strawberries packed into it than a jar of jam, with the berry decorating everything in her house from flyswatters to teapots to knife holders. The fruity décor first began with a coffee grinder that Hutchings adorned with small paintings of strawberries in an art class in 1968. The berry inspired Hutchings to incorporate it into the rest of her kitchen in utensils, mugs and cookware. And like a jam, the strawberries eventually spread to the rest of the house in all of its decoration.

In Hutchings’ kitchen, she proudly displays some of her more unusual items, such as a knife holder shaped like a giant strawberry with the utensils protruding from it. She also has a collection of cookbooks for every strawberry treat, including one compilation of winning recipes from Oxnard’s annual Strawberry Festival. Hutchings said that she is a devout attendee of the event. The house’s bathroom is just as sweet as the rest, with curtains, rugs and soap of this particular berry.

Hutchings’ humble strawberry garden tops off the theme of her house. There, she grows bushes of tiny, white berries that may look unripe, but are ready for eating despite their pale appearance. When ready, these strawberries fall right off their stem, and their taste is sweet and tangy, similar to a tropical fruit.

Hutchings says that most of her decorations are gifts from friends, such as strawberry-shaped ice cube trays or printed gardening gloves. Her most precious decoration is a strawberry teacup, complete with a matching saucer and spoon. Her fondness comes from the fact that her granddaughter, who has her own budding fruit-themed collection, has a matching cherry teacup and saucer that Hutchings bought for her.

Despite the evidence in her home, Hutchings prefers the flavor of raspberries to strawberries. Her love for strawberries comes from her fondness of the color combination of red and green. She is an avid quilter, and she says that, “It makes me really happy to do things with red and green.” She began quilting in the 1970s and was then part of a group where members were challenged to make something that they loved. Hutchings decided to create a strawberry-printed jacket for her challenge. However, her jacket was sent to the “stash”—a term quilters use for their collection of abandoned projects—and she only finished it recently.

Among the red berries of her home, there are several clocks watching over the living room. These were the fancy of Hutchings’ husband Robert, who passed away four years ago. Hutchings celebrates the 57 years that they had together, saying that they were full of fun and wild adventures. The two married when Kika was 18 and Robert was 22. He was a teacher and suggested that Hutchings earn her credential to ensure the same vacation times. The pair taught for decades in Bakersfield before moving to Carpinteria to retire by the beach.

During Hutchings, career teaching elementary school, she received the title “The Strawberry Teacher,” since she wore berry-themed prints and jewelry in her daily wardrobe.

Hutchings spends her time with friends in different quilting clubs, such as the Coastal Quilters Guild of Santa Barbara. Many of her projects are strawberry themed, and fellow members give her berry-printed fabrics as gifts. This craft runs in her family, as her daughter and daughter-in-law are avid quilters and both have used their talent to make Hutchings strawberry-themed gifts.

Lions install District Governor

The new Lions Club 4A3 District Governor Norm McDaniel held his installation dinner at the Carpinteria Lions Club Park on July 13. Over 60 people from as far north as San Miguel and south into Camarillo attended the district-wide dinner. The Carpinteria Club jointly opened its normal meeting with Governor McDaniel and his district cabinet and officers, after which the district members held their dinner meeting in the building. The crowd enjoyed barbecued tri-tip and chicken, along with all the fixings.

Carpinteria Past President Mike Dawson was the leader for the cooking crew, and Carpinteria Past President Curtis Lopez was the master of ceremonies. “It was tough to tell which Governor McDaniel enjoyed more—the fellowship, the food or the park,” said current club President Clyde Freeman.

If the local Junior Lifeguards program is any indication, Carpinteria beach users of the future are in good hands. July 14’s Carpinteria Competition showcased the talents of many young athletes whose bronzed bodies have spent the last month gaining speed in the water and on land. Local youths competed in paddles, swims and beach runs against hundreds of challengers from up and down the coast.

March 9 – The Carpinteria High School softball team beat Orcutt Academy in a non-league game, 9-0. Aiden Neuron shows up each morning with the high energy and intensity that comes with any exceptional Junior Lifeguard. Not only does he push himself to do his best each day, but he encourages others as well. Throughout the Carpinteria Competition, Aiden gave it his all in each event he participated in and could be heard from across the beach while cheering for his paddle relay team. His effort and support makes him a great example for those who surround him.

Taylor Rogers arrives to Junior Guards every day with a positive attitude ready to take on any task. She consistently puts all of her effort into each exercise and is always volunteering to help instructors. Ainslee Alexander sets a higher standard for all JGs. Her performance in competitions and as one of our fastest paddlers sets her apart as an athlete. However, it is her consistently positive attitude and actions during the week that make her extraordinary.

Whether it be helping instructors with games or competing in almost every event at Carp Comp, she never fails to impress.

Diesel Slade can be a very competitive Junior Guard, perfect for our bigger competitions. Last week he finished first place in beach flags with style, ending with an iconic dive/flip for the last flag, inspiring both kids and instructors alike.

One of our top competitors, Shaya Alexander never ceases to impress her instructors. Without fail, Shaya will give 100 percent on every task she is presented with.

We were blown away by her second-place finish in the A’s long run which directly followed her decisive first place A’s distance paddle in Friday’s competition.

Brian Kliewer is the most consistent junior lifeguards enrolled this seasons. He approaches every task in a calm and calculating way while also crushing his competition. He is incredibly modest and gracious in both victory and defeat and serves as a shining example of what we instructors expect from our A group.

Maybe it’s a fad, maybe it’s expected in her circle of friends. How did her parents react? It’s useless to continue to show your disapproval. It’s done. She will get plenty of negative feedback in the years to come. Just be more prudent next time you are asked for money or give it with no strings attached.

Dear aDDict in the Family, Remember addiction is a disease not a character flaw. Be compassionate and don’t judge. Addiction has grown epidemic proportions. It is destroying individuals, families and our whole society.

These drugs are originally prescribed as a short-term way to deal with pain. The problem is that it also makes the person feel good so they keep taking them after the pain is gone.

Do everything you can to help the immediate family face the problem and get help. The family doctor is the first person to contact. The professionals know all the groups and agencies set up to address the problem. Sometimes the addict will seek help, and sometimes the family has to in-

Dear Donnie, My son, my only child, is engaged to be married in a few months. I like his future wife. She comes from a good family and has an excellent job. I am concerned that she seems to be putting on a lot of weight.

I doubt that her wedding dress will fit by the time of the wedding. I asked my son if she might be pregnant. He said, “Absolutely not, she does not want any children.” I was shocked that my son did not seem to care. Am I being selfish for wanting grandchildren? Young families often complain but would never want to go back to being childless. Once you’ve heard them out, then love them and support them. Who knows, babies may come to them anyway. It happens.

Dear Donnie, I have just learned that I have an uncle in prison. I can’t believe my parents never told me about him. I learned about it from my mom’s sister who is visiting us from their hometown in Nebraska. This uncle, my mom’s brother, was involved in an accident while driving drunk. His girlfriend was killed and he was charged with manslaughter and is serving a long sentence.

Everybody back home knows about this and the family has been disgraced. My mother was 18 at the time and moved to California to get away from the scandal.

When I confronted her with the news, she cried and said her brother was dead to her and she had waited years before telling my dad and never wanted me to

know. She is angry at her sister and told her to pack up and go home. How can I forgive my mother for not telling me this important family secret?

It’s unfortunate that she hasn’t had help in dealing with her feelings of anger and betrayal. Ask her to please forgive your aunt for telling you about your uncle. After all, your aunt has continued to live in the same town with the stigma and shame and deserves some compassion. Your uncle is paying the price for his actions and maybe it would help your mother to forgive him too. We can’t take the blame for what others do.

Ask your dad to help your mother get over this burden she has been carrying.

Dear Donnie, I have a friend who is always down on his luck. He’s just been evicted because the house he was renting is being sold, his car got repossessed and his last paycheck bounced. I recently loaned him a few hundred bucks and now he is asking for more. What shall I do?

Can you build it if you buy it?

WHERE THE HEART IS SARAH SMITH Purchasing your own slice of heaven to build your dream home can be far more complicated than purchasing an existing home. Here are some checkpoints to consider before diving in.

1) It is not illegal to sell an unbuildable lot. Before you even consider purchasing land, check with the Realtors involved, as well with the county and city to check on possibility of building.

2) How will you get utilities and what will it cost? This may be one of the single most important questions to answer when purchasing raw land. If purchasing in the Carpinteria area, you will want to know if this property is in the county or the city? Will the Carpinteria Valley Water District agree to service this property? Is there a nearby natural gasline or will you need to rely on propane or electricity to power your home? Where is the nearest powerline, and how much will Southern California Edison charge to drop and pull an electrical line for you? The answers to these questions can determine if the land is affordable and may even deem the land “unbuildable.”

3) Imagine your surroundings in five to 10 years. Is the lot you are considering in a wide open space? Is the gorgeous mountain or ocean view currently unobstructed? Who owns the neighboring lots? A little homework on who owns what and what could possibly be built or added to the land in your surroundings could avoid a lot of disappointment in the future. Whether you are purchasing 10-plus acres or a lot within a subdivision it is important to envision what your surroundings could look like in the future.

4) Will you need a septic system: How you will flush is a major question to be answered. If your land is within the city limits and is also serviced by municipal water, chances are high you will be able to tie into the city sewer system. Most often a call to the sanitation district can answer all your questions on approximate costs and availability based on your lot’s location. If public sewer is not an option, then some more complicated questions need answering.

Before installing a septic system, you must get a permit from the public health department, and that requires a site evaluation of the land. This site evaluation will determine what type of system the land will require (conventional/gravity fed or alternative). Costs for conventional systems can run anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000. The alternative systems, which are necessary when soil permeability is an issue, can cost anywhere from $30,000 to

$50,000. Buyers should really be careful when investigating this as there are lots of recent changes in California laws regarding septic systems. Buyers also need be aware of size and location requirements of the septic systems. These details can affect where the future home may or may not be built and also may hinder the size of the future home and hardscape surrounding the home.

In addition to the above, lots of other questions may still need to be answered.

What’s the zoning, are there development costs, will plans need to go through architectural review board, what’s necessary in the permit process, is my land within the coastal commission, what sort of fees such as school district and city construction fees will be due to city and county, will the home be insurable once built?

Most of the above questions can be answered with trips to city hall and county planning office, but in my opinion it is best for buyers who are considering the purchase of land to hire and use a land use expert to help navigate through the planning and budget process of this major decision. Most land use experts can be hired during the escrow process within the investigation period. The expertise and knowledge of a reliable land use expert can help you determine the possibility and costs associated with building on a particular lot, so before you completely dive in its best to consult with the pros.

The Carpinteria Relay for Life, an event that annually raises tens of thousands for the American Cancer Society, took place over 24 hours between July 15 and 16 at Aliso School. Jammed with activities that run the gamut from somber to buoyant, the Relay gives participants an opportunity to mourn the friends and family that have fallen to cancer, but it also promotes research and treatment advances that offer hope in the ongoing quest for a cure to the devastating disease.
